A TRIO OF AMERICANS A Night of Culture at the New York Philharmonic B Y CHRI S TO PHE R A. PAPE

T
he New York Philharmonic is a cultural institution of which New Yorkers should take pride. With its storied past – I think of Aruturo Toscanini – monumental performances have happened under their auspices. To give some context, Toscanini made his Philharmonic debut in January 1926. He guest-conducted and shared the music director post with W illem Mengelberg before taking the helm single-handedly. In 1930, Toscanini led the Philharmonic on a highly successful tour of Europe. Toscanini’s Beethoven cycle with the New York Philharmonic continued through the 1932-33 season, and listeners experienced a musical repudiation of tyranny that matched his public opposition to Hitler. During his tenure, the Philharmonic performed more than 30 world premieres and over 40 American premieres (including Ravel’s Bolero in 1929). B a c k t o p re s e n t d a y, i t w a s j u s t over a year ago when the New York Philharmonic appointed Joshua Gersen as

the orchestra’s assistant conductor. This past February, he was finally able to use his considerable skills to good use. I am, of course, referring to a trio of American composers he conducted recently. Those c o m p o s e r s — B a r b e r, B e r n s t e i n a n d Copland—were in good hands under his steady baton. Starting with Barber’s Adagio for Strings, followed by Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story and ending with Copland’s Third Symphony, it was an American powerhouse lineup, and Gersen gave us a wonderfully adept and perfectly honest interpretation to each piece. Barber’s enigmatic Adagio has long been associated with sadness and grief, but to others, it seems somehow sexual in nature. The piece responds to both hot and cool interpretations; Gersen was on the latter side, using long lines and a steady tread, which was entirely fresh and thought-provoking in its deliverance. I’m sure this orchestra could play Bernstein’s West Side Story in their sleep. Gersen was almost ornamental in nature;
however, he prodded the performers to their maximum, especially in explosive numbers like “Mambo” and “Rumble.” The suites more quieter moments were also played with aplomb. While I wouldn’t say I am the biggest admirer of Copland’s Third Symphony, Gersen did well to play it tightly. There are long stretches of the piece, where the composer seems not to have any goal but to sound as if he wrote it; he also doesn’t know what an ending should sound like (at least in the tradition of Italian opera, because you always know a piece is coming to a close when there’s a loud bang!). Now that New York has seen what Gersen can do with his baton, we are sure to clamor for more. Although his tenure is presumably coming to a near end, we think he has a long and bright future ahead. As for the philharmonic itself, there is no doubt it is still as monumental as when Toscanini was conducting. nyphil.org

The bank was designed to entice patrons, and make them feel their money was safe. The magnificently built structure is now remodeled into luxurious style condos. The bank still remains, but the upper floors is transformed into lofts with a townhouse feel. The space resembles modern loft style living. Under Barry Rice Architects, the designs are respectfully enhanced for living, featuring beauty and practicality. Original details remain preserved throughout the building. The boutique-condos feature amenities that

hen Danielle Savre enters the room, all heads turn. She is a beacon of brightness in this grey world. Her energy, enthusiasm and vivaciousness shine through. The hottest actress today is humble enough to think her recent string of successes is merely good luck. I, however, think her talent and hard work have made her what she is today. This humility also shone through as she gave us an abundance of time to speak on a wide range of issues. What follows is an enthralling interview, which showcases this actress at her fullest. I hope you love the interview as much as I loved meeting Danielle! Christopher Pape (CP): Tell us a little bit about yourself? From the beginning, please. Danielle Savre (DS): I was bor n and raised in Simi Valley, California. It’s on the outskirts of Los Angeles. I got, or I should say fell, into acting at 7 years old. Even though it sounds hard to believe, the mom of my best friend in second grade was an agent at one of the leading child acting/modeling agencies in California. She knew I would be perfect, because she thought I was a little adult. She said I was 7 going on 30. My mother was very apprehensive at the time, but she finally relented after I kept bugging her. I met with my friend’s mother and her boss, without my mother in the room, and they brought me on as a client. My first audition was with Mattel, and I ended up signing a two-year deal with them. I was on the boxes of Barbie, Cabbage Patch and Plooy Pocket. I modeled for Mattel and American Girl in Florida and Wisconsin. I did K-Mart and JCPenney. At 12, I started auditioning for acting parts and was hired on my third try. Gavin O’Connor, the director of the project (who has gone on to do wonderful things), hired me on the spot. I couldn’t believe it. I kept asking him if he was serious. I was so happy! I really got into acting and hired an
50 | MetMagNy.com | 25AMagazine.com
acting coach, whom I’m still with today, and I dedicated myself to the craft. My parents insisted I maintain a 3.5 GPA, and having done so, I was able to accelerate my classes and graduate high school at the age of 15. Almost immediately after that, I landed my first television series part on a show called Summerland on the WB. The rest is history! CP: The main reason we are featuring you is for the new spinoff of Grey’s Anatomy, Station 19, you are starring in. Can you give us some background on it? DS: Our first episode airs on March 22. There is only one character who is a crossover from Grey’s Anatomy: Jaina Lee Ortiz. Otherwise, we are all new characters with a new environment from the mind of the wonderful Shonda Rhimes. CP: What is the premise of the story? DS: The premise of the story revolves around a group of seven firefighters and three women, which is badass, and four men. It is narrated from the perspective of Jaina Lee Ortiz. It portrays the everyday occurrences and lives of these men and women who risk their lives for the greater good. On top of all that, it delves into the relationships of the characters and the dynamics between one another. My character, Maya Bishop, can best be related to Cristina of Grey’s Anatomy, played by Sandra Oh, because I am Andy Herrera’s (Jaina Lee Ortiz) best friend. They would do anything for each other. Maya is Andy’s number one support and there to cheer her on. My character is there to give the best advice as possible and keep Andy levelheaded. Of course, there is a love triangle, and Andy’s father is the captain of the station, so much drama ensues. You get to hear and see from each character every episode, which is super exciting. The show also delves into the backstory of each character, and as the plot develops, we learn more and more about each of them. CP: Tell us more about Maya Bishop.

DS: Maya is an ex-Olympian. She won Olympic gold for running the 10k at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. She has an amazing background. She decided to retire from running and become a firefighter. As the story unfolds, we learn why she decided to switch careers. Obviously, to be an Olympian, she has an unbridled drive and passion for what she did and currently does. She loves fighting fires, she loves saving people’s lives, but she also loves life. She is a girl of her times, as I like to say, because she is open to everything and anything that is thrown at her. CP: The first season is 10 episodes? DS: Yes. We air after Grey’s Anatomy and before How to Get Away with Murder, so we fill the spot of the recently-ended Scandal. What’s great about our premiere night is that it is a two-hour episode. We will continue to air past the finale of Grey’s Anatomy. And hopefully, if all goes well, we start filming again in the fall! CP: Is there a lot of diversity in the cast? I would assume so since this is a Shonda production. DS: Yes! We have a Latina lead, which

I think is amazing. We have a biracial member of the cast, Barrett Doss, who plays Victoria Hughes and a biracial Asian/ white character and of course, Okieriete “Oak” Onaodowan (of Hamilton fame), a Nigerian-American.
for this role, the production company took us out to San Pedro, so we could learn about being a firefighter. It was the actual drill tower where my sister trained. The same captain was there too. Talk about full circle!
CP: A little bird told me that your sister is a real-life firefighter? DS: Yes, she is!
CP: On a personal note, what do you do for fun? DS: I’m very happy to say that a lot of times, the cast gets together on the weekends, and we really love getting to know each other. Otherwise, my time off these days is either getting a massage or going to the movies.
CP: Have you drawn inspiration from her? DS: Absolutely. I feel like I’ve been preparing for this role for the last four years. For me, this role was meant to be because of who my sister is. I look up to her so much. And the most exciting thing is, she gets to come to set to double for me while driving the firetruck, because obviously, I have no idea how to do that. She’ll come to set and put the hat on; that way they don’t have to hide my character when there’s a driving scene. CP: Your family must have been super excited when you got this role. DS: It was surreal how this happened. In fact, my sister and I were just talking about all this. When we did the training
CP: Last question, tell me about the charities you’re involved with. DS: I just finished a race (5 miles in length) for My Friend’s Place, a great organization that provides housing and services for homeless youth. The homeless rate in LA is horribly high, and I’m proud to be involved with that. In addition, the entire cast was on Celebrity Family Feud, and we donated all the money to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. I’m very proud to be involved with both. be involved with both.

TONCHIN Ramen (And More!) the Right Way B Y CHRI S T OPHE R A. PAPE | PHO TO S B Y LI Z CLAYMAN

t almost seems that daily, a new ramen shop opens in Manhattan. New Yorkers’ insatiable desire to eat this Japanese noodle knows no bounds. From long lines at established hotspots to exciting and innovative offerings, the ramen craze has set in, and thankfully, we are here for this long and delicious ride. Late last year, the Midtown outpost of a family-run, Tokyo-based ramen chain opened to wide acclaim. Tonchin focuses on tonkotsu ramen with housemade noodles, along with nambutekkiyakki (griddled dishes), dumplings and fried chicken. The setting is sleek with dark, candlelit booths, deeply-grained wooden tables and an open kitchen. Dark blue walls and furniture form dining areas, while geometric-patterned wall surfaces match the menus and tableware. There is even a riff of the rising sun, half in the lighter portion of the wall, half in the darker, as if the paint itself is rising.
56 | MetMagNy.com | 25AMagazine.com
Tonchin opened in Tokyo in 1992 and now has 16 locations across Asia. The Sugeno family, which still owns them all, also operates 70 other restaurants in Asia. As this is the brothers Anan and Toi Sugeno’s first venture on their own, they asked Brooklyn-based creative studio Carpenter & Mason to guide the aesthetic for the restaurant, located just north of the Empire State Building, to “design a Japanese restaurant that didn’t feel traditionally Japanese.” As for the food, Tonchin has four kinds of ramen on the menu. Common to New York is the classic tonkotsu or spicy tantan (which I could not resist ordering and loved the nutty undertones); less so is the smoked dashi ramen with a pork broth, smoky fish oil and clams. Of note is that the noodles here are made in-house daily, rather than trucked in from the prolific Sun Noodle. Small plates include pork ginger gyoza and tuna tartare with yuzu pepper, and the octopus and avocado salad with
wasabi shoyu dressing, which was not only a standout, but transported me to the shores of Japan (even my Japanese guest, not necessarily the most generous of spirit, remarked on how much he loved this dish). Rice bowls, like boiled shirasu don and unagi with tototo don, fill out the rest of the menu (and made for a very filling meal). Drinks are Japanese-accented, like the wasabi vodka tonic or shiso Moscow mule, and a definite must-have. Friendly and attentive service, paired with innovative and high-quality food offerings, make for a winning combination. It was no wonder the place was packed the night we dined there. Take my advice and make your way over to this temple of ramen! 13 W 36th Street New York, NY 10018 646.692.9912 tonchinnewyork.com

pulence is back! And we are more than thrilled that it has taken the form of Ophelia Lounge on the rooftop of Midtown East’s Beekman To w e r. T h i s re f u r b i s h e d lounge (originally built in the 1920s) is stuffed to the gills with luxurious velvet banquettes backed by expansive windows looking out to the skyline and East River. Just last month, this new rooftop cocktail lounge opened to much anticipation. On the 26th floor of this Art Deco landmarked building, blocks from the United Nations Plaza, Ophelia pairs sophisticated interiors and panoramic views with characteristics more common to New York’s speakeasies: a long and storied history, elegance, deliciously-designed cocktails and mouthwatering dishes. While restoring the space, the team behind Ophelia, principally Merchants Hospitality, had no shortage of historical material to work with. Built in 1928 and designed by American architect John Mead Howells, the building, formerly named the Panhellenic Tower, served as a women’sonly hotel and lounge for college graduates who had belonged to sororities. After the rooftop space opened to the public in the 1930s, it entered a new era as the Top of the Tower restaurant, a neighborhood favorite. The opening view, as a patron enters the space, is a 24-foot bar, lined with stools upholstered in deep red velvet. A stuffed albino pheasant, wings spread in flight, hangs over beautifully-displayed liquor bottles, lit from below. Three paneled windows are behind the bar. A wall of windows gives the diner 360-degree views, while two fully open-air terraces, on the north and south sides, offer the full rooftop experience. As for the food, Chef Stephen Putnam offers a delectable mixture of classics, like caviar service and oysters Rockefeller, and updated New American offerings, such

as a Maine lobster spring roll with mango and Thai dipping sauce. But the singular cocktails, designed by Amir Babayoff, make this place a standout. The Purple Tuxedo cocktail was one of our favorites, made with Empress 1908 gin, aquavit, vermouth, Velvet Falernum liqueur, absinthe and plum bitters; as a finishing touch, Babayoff sprinkles real gold flakes across the cocktail’s surface. The first drink I had, the Far East Side, made with shiso-infused mizu shochu, Tanqueray gin and yuzu, was a bright spot on an otherwise cold evening. Overall, Hamachi
Babayoff’s drinks are carefully considered, beautifully poured and delicious to drink. In the final analysis, the big views, the thoughtful and inspired design, and the professional mixology (resulting in excellent cocktails) makes this a magical visit for a perfect first date or a place to rekindle love. 3 Mitchell Place, 26th floor New York, NY 10017 212.980.4796 opheliany.com Ophelia’s Ascension

MANI IN PASTA V iva Italiana! B Y CHR I STO PHE R A. PAPE
A
s an American of Italian extraction, I have much to be proud. From art, music, fashion, literature, architecture and most importantly, food, there are few places in the world that rival the glorious contributions of Italians. Therefore, it is no surprise that New York, capital of the world, has so embraced Italian cuisine, as to make one (almost) think that Italian cuisine was invented on our fair shores, rather than back in the motherland. Recently, I had the pleasure to eat at a fantastic new Italian restaurant and was impressed by its quality, attention to cooking detail and taste. Every so often, a restaurant appears that seems entirely innocuous; the storefront and interior suggest lack of quality, while the price
point seems so low that it must just be a nondescript “cheap eat.” However, as the saying goes, “don’t judge a book by its cover,” so the same is true of Mani in Pasta, a small Roman-style pizzeria and Italian eatery. Having eaten there twice, I can say with confidence, that it is some of the best, most delicious bites I’ve had in a long time. And in it’s short tenure, I have recommended it to as many people as I possibly could. The restaurant is owned and operated by three young Italians, Pietro Toscano (who runs front of house for both locations), Eleonora Calvacci (who runs front of house at the 37th street location) and Giuseppe Manco (the executive chef for both locations). All were born less than hour from my grandmother’s hometown. Mani in Pasta is their second location, Chef Giuseppe Manco
having opened a fast-casual café in midtown (with the same name) in order to service the lunch crowd. Their new place, as previously mentioned on 14th, is more like a sit-down pizzeria. However, don’t be fooled by its beggar appearance, this food will “knock your socks off.” From first bite to last, my guest and I were enthralled by the boldness of the flavors and quality of the cooking. In no particular order of either timeline or deliciousness, dishes we loved included pizza carbonara, spaghetti cacio e pepe and a frito misto, which included suppli (rice and mozzarella), potato croquette (which tasted remarkably similar to my grandmother’s version), zucchini flower stuffed with buffalo mozzarella (what else one earth can taste this good?) and a fittatina made with fried spaghetti, ham and mozzarella (this was probably the most interesting bite of all and I’ve begged, with no avail for the recipe – maybe after reading this Pietro will spill the beans!). But back to that pizza carbonara. As a food writer and home cook, I’d like to think I make an excellent spaghetti carbonara (making it as authentic as possible). But one taste of this slice (served in slices or as a whole pie) will make you reconsider the existence of God. The luxuriousness and creaminess of the consistency, the umami (a Japanese word closely associated with savoriness) made me cry in my plate, as I wept with joy. I was instantaneously transported to Rome. Mamma Mia, as the Italians would say, I have I fallen in love with this restaurant. I urge you to make your way over and while this isn’t an Alto Italiano (haute in French) experience, it beats many fine dining establishments in taste, quality and caring service. 245 East 14th Street New York, NY 10003 646.870.5851 maniinpastanyc.com

onsidered by many to be one of the top food Meccas in the world, New York City can lay claim to a bevy of fabulous and famous restaurants covering a wide variety of different styles. New restaurants are always coming and going in the city, hoping to make a lasting impression. And Charlie Palmer Steak New York, located at the Archer Hotel in Midtown, is certainly one that is garnering much attention. Charlie Palmer Steak New York is one of the many temples to food created by the Charlie Palmer Group, which owns several different restaurants all over the country. The owner, the titular Charlie Palmer, is not just a skilled entrepreneur, but is also a master chef in his own right. Palmer’s signature style is Progressive American, which blends together intense flavors in surprising ways to create an unforgettable dining experience. He has achieved great fame through his cooking and as executive chef brings all of his culinary technique and flair to Charlie Palmer Steak New York.
62 | MetMagNy.com | 25AMagazine.com
Charlie Palmer Steak New York has menus for all three major meals, and each menu features several delicious options. Start your day off with a bread and pastry basket, a steak and eggs special, or a bagel with house-made lox and optional caviar. For lunch, help yourself to one of their raw bar options, or simply have it all with their Prime Platter, which features all of their raw bar foods. Continue your meal with their specialty 50-50 Burger, with a patty consisting of half ground beef and half ground bacon. But it is at dinner where their steaks truly take center stage. From Japanese Kobe Beef to a filet mignon, you can hardly go wrong with any of these options. Also of special interest is their 30-day dry aged New York strip, Ribeye, and Porterhouse for two. Mention should also be made of their non-beef options, such as a starter of Charred Spanish Octopus served with salsa verde, chorizo and fingerling potatoes that will convert you to or reconfirm your love of octopus. And for dessert, try Ryan’s Sticky Bun with vanilla ice cream and cream cheese frosting, a delicious ending to your
meal. When it comes to drinks, Charlie Palmer Steak New York is at the top of their game there as well. Amanda Streibel, their lead sommelier, has worked with Charlie Palmer for many years having been sommelier and bartender at Aureole, his very first restaurant. The wines offered range from crowd favorites like California Cabernet and Italian Montepulciano to niche wines from as far off as New Zealand and Tasmania. Charlie Palmer Steak New York is a truly wonderful example of what makes the New York City food scene so spectacular. With Palmer’s experienced hand at the reigns, the food is utterly superlative and there are more than enough options to cater to whatever mood you are in. It is without exaggeration to say that in the firmament of New York City dining, Charlie Palmer Steak New York is one its brightest stars. And therefore, I implore you to go there soon and experience everything that the restaurant has to offer. 47 W 38th St, New York, NY 10018 (212) 302-3838 charliepalmersteak.com/locations/new-york

Daniel Boulud’s restaurant, Boulud Sud. Located at 20th West 64th Street between Broadway and Central Park West, Boulud Sud is a truly incredible Mediterranean experience, featuring flavors from all over the region. The tastes offered range from the south of France to the coast of North Africa, and emphasize fresh seafood and a variety of spices for a savory and flavorful meal. The décor matches the food perfectly,
creating an elegant and comfortable setting. Colored in sunflower yellow and slate gray, the space features a bar and lounge and is lit by floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the vaulted ceilings, terrazzo floors, and the many Vik Muniz paintings lining the walls. It is truly an exquisite location, creating the proper ambiance for enjoying Boulud Sud’s culinary offerings. Under the purview of Executive Chef
Travis Swikard, who became fascinated with the craft of cooking at four years old, Boulud Sud’s menu has become a thing of beauty. As Chef Travis says, “Boulud Sud is about elegant and inspired Mediterranean cuisine. It’s about taste, texture, and aroma first and foremost, but it is also about fun.” Boulud Sud serves both lunch and dinner, and provides a Happy Pasta Hour at their bar and lounge, which starts at 9 p. m. every night and allows guests to order any of their house-made pastas at half price. With wonderful dishes like Rye Flour Spaghetti and Squid Ink Bucatini “Fra Diavolo,” it is an opportunity that is not to be missed. Of course, their other offerings are equally delightful. For lunch, start off with
a Za’atar Grilled Salmon and Quinoa Salad or a Ratatouille and Oeuf Mollet, based off a recipe by Chef Boulud’s grandmother. Next, try a Fire-Roasted Turkish Pizza with soujouk, feta, and spinach or a Harissa Lamb Burger with polenta fries. For dinner, begin with an Octopus “à la Plancha,” then move on to a Dover Sole “Méditeranée” or a Moroccan Chicken Tagine. Finally, finish up your meal with a Bittersweet Torta Caprese or the HouseMade Crèmes Glacées. Last, but certainly not least, enjoy some of Boulud Sud’s drinks, which are utterly spectacular. Curated by sommelier Joe Robitaille, their wines cover the full length and breadth of the Mediterranean region,
and their cocktail program is expressly designed to mirror many of the ingredients used in the kitchen. Boulud Sud is a marvel of Mediterranean cuisine and a must-visit for any gourmet. With outstanding food, amazing drinks and gorgeous décor, the restaurant is a vibrant and unique expression of the region’s diverse culinary culture, and it is guided by practiced and caring hands. Start with a great meal at Little Tong Noodle Shop and wash it all down with Japaneseinfluenced libations at Bar Moga. I may have been late to the party, but at least I made it! That was my feeling when I first entered Little Tong Noodle Shop. This humble in size, but not so in flavor, Chinese eatery has been a hit with the food illuminati since opening its doors a year ago. Since then, it’s received glowing reviews from every major food outlet, culminating with a two-star review from the New York Times. Little Tong had a lot to live up to, as it is a few doors away from David Chang’s famous spot, Momofuku Noodle Bar. But starchy-food aficionados need not worry because the pleasures of southwest

Chinese cuisine (principally from Yunan, the province closest to southeast Asia) are on full display here. Little Tong’s summit, the mixian noodle (a rice-based noodle) is the star attraction. Starters of Chinese broccoli salad with citrus soy, cured yolk and garlic chips and pork chao shou, and handmade wonts served in a chili soy sauce were the standouts of the smaller dishes. The wonton dough was nearly translucent and extremely tender to eat, while the meat was moist, flavorful and perfectly accompanied by the sauce. As for the noodle dishes, my guest had the Mala Dan Dan Mixian, which is a play on the famed Sichuan dish, Dan Dan noodles. Here, it was served with ground pork, ya cai, pickled celery and mustard seeds, green peppercorn oil, chili oil, and peanuts. I, however, had the famed Grandma Chicken Mixian, a dark and oily dish full of garlic and black sesame flavors and smells. These serve to deepen the chicken broth and give it a complexity few
noodle dishes possess. It was the hit of the night! After our wonderful meal, we headed over to west Houston for a liquid treat. Bar Moga is a cocktail bar inspired by the figure of the moga, or “modern girl,” that emerged in early 20th-century Japan. The bar’s focus is on cocktails, many of which feature shochu as an ingredient and incorporate traditional Japanese spirits into recipes inspired by those of the American prohibition era. The wine list features predominantly female winemakers, and many of the spirits come from female distillers, or companies in which women play a key role. It was a perfect ending to our terrific evening. We loved the setting and the refreshing drinks.

This combination of inspired, elegant food made with care and great technique and a beautiful, comfortable room makes for a winning formula. The team at 2 spring is excited by these wonderful possibilities and aims to provide an unforgettable dining experience for residents of the Gold Coast. The restaurant I set to open in December and is sure to be an instant success.

HISTORICAL NUN ASSISI RELAIS BY JESSICA PIPER
T
ucked away in the small town of Assisi lies the elegant boutique hotel known as Nun Assisi Relais & Spa Museum. This boutique hotel boasts only 18 rooms, each elegantly executed with historically-themed furniture, inspired by the restoration of the St. Catherine monastery, built in 1275 to house Benedictine nuns. There are a variety of sleeping accommodations to choose from— basic bedrooms to suites to large scaled suites perfect for entertaining. One such example is the Privilege Suite—with stone walls that date back to the 1200s—that exemplifies the medieval essence of the town and hotel. Each suite is also designed with the most modern of technical innovations as well as amenities such as guests being able to choose from

several custom wellness treatments and the utilization of two hydro massage swimming pools. When guests arrive at the hotel, they have the ability to custom order their furniture to suit their every aesthetic need. The pieces are designed by local artisans to make sure not only does the guest have a very traditional experience, but that the design is also infused with a modern touch. Additionally, run in conjunction with the hotel, is the Nun Spa Museum that takes the spa expereince to an entire new level. The building itself is crafted to resemble an ancient museum that offers a most unusual treatment experience known as the Nun Path (Tepidarium, Caldarium, Sudatorium, Frigidarium). Beyond all the typical spa amenities, the property includes a Jacuzzi, a multi-massage pool and a tea room. One of
its most intriguing features is the 1st century BC limestone pillars that are the base of the spa’s structure that surrounds the pool— the spa’s tranquil center. Treatments can be tailored for the guest’s individual needs and they offer a variety of packages such as the “Breath of Wellness” that includes a night in a double room, breakfast, access to the Nun Path as well as a pro-energy body massage. The hotel’s food and beverage program also coincides perfectly with the traditional atmosphere of the property. Guests of the hotel can dine at Osteria Gourmet featuring the local Umbrian cuisine. The kitchen’s philosophy is to source only the freshest ingredients from small, local farmers and each dish, whether it be a pasta dish, a baked goods or an ice cream for dessert, is made in-house daily.

ROYALTON ST. LUCIA RESORT Luxury Within Reach BY CATHERINE AND ERSEN
I
feel like a million dollars.” I’ve said it probably a million times. Usually, after something like a great night’s sleep or a big win at work to express to someone how vibrant I feel at the moment and to get a laugh out of them at the same time. “I feel like a million dollars” is almost always said in jest because, let’s face it, what does a million dollars really feel like? Now, I know, because as soon as I stepped into my room at the Royalton St. Lucia Resort and Spa, it truly felt like a million dollars. My corner suite was chic, spacious and wrapped in sunshine. Instead of walls, there
86 | MetMagNy.com | 25AMagazine.com
were sliding glass doors—floor to ceiling— providing multiple entrances that led out to the wraparound terrace from both the living room and the bedroom; their curtains breezily hypnotized me over breakfast throughout my stay whether I was curled up in the suite’s delicious Dreambed™ or savoring my omelet and coffee at the dining table. The living room felt like a white canvas accented with brushed steel art, mirrors and a bar full of all the details: a set of glasses to suit whatever cocktail you desired, a mini wine cellar and, oh yes, wine taps. Then, I saw the bathroom complete with a gorgeous, long vanity, a shower with dual rain-drop showerheads, and the
centerpiece: a Jacuzzi already drawn for a bubble bath waiting for me. I felt like Marilyn Monroe, kicking bubbles in the air. It was divine. Just in case I’d rather enjoy my bubbles outdoors, there was a second Jacuzzi on the terrace overlooking the beach. I wholeheartedly took advantage of both. I learned this place has a pillow menu (yes, that’s a real thing) and standard operating procedure for putting in your order is done via the designated butler cell phone. It’s mobile so you can bring it with you wherever you go (I called it the “bat phone” because I could ask for anything and a lovely friendly staff member would appear wherever I was
in the resort to help me). Let me just pause for a second while we’re on this subject. This is important. I’ve traveled around the world and have been to many beautiful places, but it’s the people who are there who always seem to make or break a trip for me. Each place, whether it’s a city, or a region or an island, has its own personality. If their vibe is closed-off or cold, you don’t absorb the same rich flavors of a place as you do when you visit a spot where the locals are genuinely warm and friendly. The locals in St. Lucia make you crave your next trip back. Because of how welcomed I felt by everyone I met, I could fully absorb the island’s beauty: the knock-out beaches, the gorgeous waterfalls, the volcanoes and Morne Coubaril Estate (tasting chocolate in its rawest form—a must!), the landscape, everything. Then there was the food. When I travel, I usually like to do most of my eating “off-
campus,” so-to-speak, to explore an area and get an authentic taste for the local cuisine. But after my first meal at Calypso, a restaurant within the Royalton St. Lucia, I realized this was one of the few resorts where I could have a culinary adventure every day without ever leaving the grounds. Each plate felt like a new experience on its own. Offering West Indies cuisine with exquisite style and creativity, Calypso served the perfect marriage of local flavor and high-end dining. After that, I found myself counting the hours between each meal because I couldn’t wait to try another restaurant at the Royalton St. Lucia—whether it was Hunter Steakhouse, the Zen Japanese restaurant or the darling Beachfront Seafood and Grill Restaurant, Dorado, to name a few The beauty of this was not only the food itself, but the fact that I could soak in every minute of the pristine beach, the infinity pools, the cabanas and entertainment at the resort instead of wasting that precious time
in taxis searching for a memorable meal. But, therein lies the conflict of any trip, right? You want to explore this place that you’ve never been to, but spending all day on a bus with a tour guide or wandering around on your own sounds less than desirable when you consider the beach and luxurious loveliness waiting for you back at the resort. That’s when they mentioned the excursions available. What better way to explore an island than on a boat? I couldn’t agree more. It’s like they knew me. But what was it that closed that milliondollar feeling? The spa. Anything that starts with a hydrotherapy circuit is going to be amazing. Then it continued with aromatherapy, exfoliation treatments, body wraps, and the most intuitive deep-tissue massage I’ve ever experienced. I caught myself tearing up a little when it was time for me to go. Yeah, it was that kind of heaven. royaltonresorts.com/St_Lucia

Seeking respite from their usual destinations which have now become less a novelty, Montenegro offers a change of scenery and unspoiled beauty. Positioned to become the next Monaco, the Porto Montenegro, which was once headquarters for the Austro-Hungarian Imperial Navy, has been transformed into a luxury yacht marina complex and waterfront development including posh private membership clubs, nightclub and lounges, fine restaurants, a museum, and five-star hotels catering to the elite. The first hotel

to venture onto the scene was the Regent Porto Montenegro, which has been dazzling its guests since its opening in August 2014. Located on the palm-lined shores of Boka Bay, in the picturesque town of Tivat, the Regent Porto Montenegro boasts expansive views of the sea that contrast with the towering mountains framing it. Charming nearby city streets, palaces and squares, all built in grey limestone from the adjacent mountains set the stage for this five-story, terracotta roof hotel. MONTREAL T h e P a ri s of Nort h A me ri c a BY CATHERINE AND ERSEN
Y
ou know that feeling when someone lets you in on a secret? All of a sudden you feel a little sneaky and a little giddy. You’ve just been trusted with some very special information. You now have access to something that few people do and you are now one of the few keepers of this treasured knowledge that was given to you in a whisper, because it was that precious. I live for those moments, especially when I travel: The secret dish that’s not on the menu and has to be ordered in a very specific way; the password that gets you into an underground watering hole to hear the best live, local music; the undisclosed hot spring that’s off the map and way off the tourist trail. I live for those moments-when a local trusts you so much that they’re willing to let you in on one of their city’s secrets. My trip to Montreal felt like one whispered secret after another. It started before I even got there. So I’m waiting in the Delta Sky Lounge for my flight and a Delta representative asks me to follow him. He takes me through a door I’d never noticed before, down a set of stairs and before I can ask why, he opens another door and there we are on the tarmac—as in, where the planes are. He explains that my plane is now departing from a different terminal and walks me over to a Porsche. Yep, it’s right there on the tarmac too. He opens the passenger door for me and explains, “We do this for VIP’s—Celebrities, Government Officials, and Delta Diamond Club Members who have tight connections. It’s called our Porsche Service.” The last part was uttered just above a whisper. The Delta representative then drives me past a dozen or so planes until we arrive at mine. A private stairway is set up and at

the top, is a covert door. “This is how I get on?” I ask, walking up the stairs in disbelief. When we get to the top, he nods and opens the door to the plane. No need to go back into the airport and wait for boarding instructions. Just up the steps and there I was, in my seat sipping champagne before the jet bridge for all the other passengers was even set up. How did I not know about this Porsche Service before? It was a secret. The next one was disclosed about 20 minutes later. This time, not in a whisper. Our pilot announced that our flight from NYC to Montreal would be 45 minutes. Yes, as in less than an hour. I’ve had commutes from one side of Manhattan to the other that were longer than that. Instead, today, I’m commuting to--what I’ve been told is--a miniature version of Paris which is a little bit different, isn’t it? Next, we arrive at our hotel, Sofitel
Montreal Golden Mile, where every staff member we encounter is genuinely smiling and happy to greet us. It became quite clear over the course of our stay that their staff is carefully hand-picked. They truly enjoy hospitality. Again, I found myself questioning how seasoned I actually was as a traveler: How am I not more familiar with this hotel group? I’d obviously come across the brand before, but I had no idea it was such a step above. It’s almost as if it’s been kept a secret. Part of a French multinational hotel group, Sofitel sums up its philosophy in one word: Magnifique--the French word for magnificent--a word that’s synonymous with gorgeous, splendid, lovely, and royal. Nothing could be more true of this hotel and its staff. The Le Renoir restaurant and Le Bar within the hotel were refined down to the detail from the dashing décor and clever cocktails to the creative menu and
elegant dishes. Dessert was no exception. (Psssst, don’t tell anyone, but their Head Pastry Chef, Roland del Monte, renowned for his ice cream, was made a knight of the Order of Agricultural Merit by the French Agricultural Minister and has indulged the sweet teeth of French presidents and other state officials. He wants people to enjoy his creations, not his titles, so that stays between you and me.) That air of charm and French refinement shines throughout the city of Montreal, however I wouldn’t confine it to being “a miniature Paris.” Its flavor is slightly different. There’s a modern flair added to the Old European feel in Montreal that’s magnetic. You get the sense that the city doesn’t want you to just wander in and out of its historic sites and museums. It wants to make sure you’re engaged while you’re there. For example, I was caught by surprise at the Notre Dame Basilica of Montreal by the spectacular multi-media light and music show called Aura. It was, not only stunning by way of its production value, but also by the way it left me with a much deeper appreciation for the architecture and sanctity of the Cathedral itself. Montreal’s Museum of Fine Arts Museum
was another perfect example of the city’s desire to keep you captivated. One minute y o u ’ re l e a r n i n g a b o u t c l a s s i c R e n o i r paintings and the next, you’re diving into “Love is Love,” a daring and exquisite exhibit by French designer, Jean Paul Gaultier. It’s remarkable. Here’s what’s not a secret: My fascination with food. It’s amazing to me how much eating through a city will tell you almost everything about it. In Montreal, that happens right in the streets—open-air farmers markets taken to a whole other level. Not just once a week, but every day, they set-up these elaborate indoor/outdoor markets with colorful, fresh, seasonal produce, artisanal breads, pates, foie gras, soups from scratch, pastries, and the types meats and cheeses that, in New York, you would have to seek out a specialty store to find. Within 15 minutes of being at the market, we put together a charcuterie board that would rival most fine dining restaurants. In Montreal, they simply call it “grocery shopping.” I know. It makes me jealous too. These markets are everywhere but the most prominent ones are the Jean Talon Market and the Atwater Market. And now, one of the best-kept secrets
I’ve ever come across: The Sugar Shack of Chef Martin Picard’s restaurant, La Pied de Conchon. Quick background: The term “Sugar Shack” comes from the Canadian tradition of boiling sap down to maple syrup in a shack out in the countryside. In short, it describes a rustic atmosphere. Get Picard involved and what you have is a renowned chef’s gourmet reinvention of local, traditional, harvest season recipes. Imagine, being out in the peacefulness and fragrance of a gorgeous farm, knowing everything from this land you’re on is being cooked for you elegantly course after course, and you’re being served in a cozy log-cabin like setting—picnic-table style with a front porch outside where the barbeque smoker is within arm’s reach. I was in foodie bliss. The atmosphere, the flavors, everything was so grounded and sophisticated at the same time. One of the best culinary experiences of my life. Apparently, I’m not the only one who feels that way. It can take months to get a reservation. But I assure you, if you plan ahead, it will be a night you will never forget. Sometimes a secret is just too good to keep.

MARIGOT BAY RESORT & MARINA St. Lucia’s Best Caribbean Hideaway BY JANIS T U RK
O
f all the Caribbean islands, none seems as extraordinary and as sublimely tucked away as St. Lucia. There guests can hide away on a private sparkling bay flanked by rainforest-covered jungle mountains and a pristine little beach, making it a sublime vacation or honeymoon spot. And with direct/nonstop JetBlue flights from JFK, getting to St. Lucia is a breeze. All the best island fun—like street parties and water sports—await, or simply unplug from city life and enjoy a peaceful Caribbean retreat. St. Lucia is home many spectacular hotels and resorts, but my favorite is one far from where the cruise ships dock. For the best

and most luxurious St. Lucia experience, I prefer to stay at the secluded elegant Marigot Bay Resort & Marina by Capella. Romantic, playful, scenic, and sexy, this tony little resort offers the best island adventure in the Caribbean. Centered by two freshwater infinity pools on the upper and lower levels of the resort, Marigot Bay Resort also offers a luxury spa, an active marina, attractive shops, boats and beaches, fine-dining restaurants, Sushi bars and a swim-up watering hole, along with a newly renovated Rum Cave restaurant, featuring fun and informative rum tasting events. The lavish resort has sprawling indoor/outdoor lounge spaces, garden pavilions, patios, cabanas, water features, and a private boardwalk. With
stunning views of Marigot Bay (featured in movies), and with shimmering waters, and mountain flora and fauna, Marigot Bay Resort offers a blissful escape. The resort’s 124 extravagantly handsome rooms and suites offer hot tubs, balconies, and West Indian-inspired décor. You’ll feel as though you’re in your own private island residence, complete with five-star amenities and your own personal assistant. Whether guests book the most expensive suite or simply a standard room, all are assigned their own Capella Personal Assistant who calls in advance of their trip to make their every desire is ready once they arrive. Once there, the personal assistant will book romantic dinner reservations, arrange a cruise from the resort’s own Capella Marina, or set up
special island adventure excursions. During my stay, the staff pampered me as I enjoyed an enormous one-bedroom suite, complete with a living room, ultra-contemporary kitchen, laundry room, spacious master bedroom, and grand master bath. With my own deck overlooking the pool and Capella Marina, and with a private hot tub and fast dependable Wi-Fi, I couldn’t imagine nicer island accommodations. Two- and threebedroom suites are also available, and families with children will appreciate the resort’s “Zando’s” Kid’s Activity Program. One of the highlights of my stay was a visit with Billy Boyle, Marigot Bay Resort & Marina’s executive chef, who carefully and skillfully cultivates the resort’s farm-to-fork dining experiences. Chef Billy’s meticulously curated menus feature delicious, locallysourced dishes inspired by fresh ingredients available seasonally from Saint Lucian farmers. Local fisherman Captain Warren
docks at the Rum Cave to deliver his catch of the day for the evening’s dinner. Another blissful part of my stay was an afternoon at the Auriga Spa & Fitness at Marigot Bay Resort & Marina. With views of the bay and mountains, the private indoor/ outdoor spa village and fitness facilities are hidden among trees and verdant foliage, creating an exclusive oasis. Before my treatment, I enjoyed the steam inhalation room, Jacuzzi, and sauna cabana, and a welcoming, grounding ceremony, employing carefully selected herbs designed to prepare the body for the spa experience. The large state-of-the-art fitness center was also handy day and night. The Spa village is even home to a treehouse gazebo, perfect for a romantic dinner for two or a special spa treatment setting. W i t h t h e re s o r t ’s m a r i n a ’s s h o p s , restaurant and sundries store, and with a ferry to take guests across the bay to
LaBas Beach at Marigot, to swim, kayak, and more, guests never want to leave Marigot Bay. But if you do, be sure to take a “Smooth Operator” private charter boat to the other side of the island (or you can ask your Capella Personal Assistant to arrange for a car). Take day trips or half-day excursions to visit cocoa farms, or to bathe in natural hot springs, or take a volcano tour, and along the way pass through charming villages and see St. Lucia’s famous twin volcanic mountain peaks, the Pitons. Visit Pigeon Island and Anse Cochon beaches, where snorkeling and diving is a delight. Or make a scenic climb up the Marigot Bay Ridge with the resort’s resident Ranger. With all this to do and see in St. Lucia, you owe it to yourself to book your Marigot Bay getaway. marigotbayresortc.com

MADELINE CARROLL BY NI COLE TR O UP | NI CO LE TR O UPLO UDAR T.CO M
R
ising star, Madeline Carroll, opens up about her life as an actress and some of the most famous Hollywood talent she’s worked with over the years. But most i m p o r t a n t l y s h e s h a re s s o m e t h i n g deeper, an important aspect of her life that pushes her though the tough times, giving her hope, joy and something more fulfilling than Hollywood or fame. A native of Los Angeles, California, Carroll began her acting career as a young child, working with some of the biggest names in Hollywood. When artist and writer, Nicole Troup, became acquainted with Carroll and her story, she saw nothing short of someone who is beautiful inside and out and worth telling about. As a visual artist who paints influential figures on canvas, Nicole knew Carroll would be a perfect subject for her next portrait to be showcased in her future NYC art show series titled “Deeper Than Fame.” The show will depict influential public figures and celebrities that Nicole has partnered with. Subjects, who have something to share, a story that goes much deeper and offers fulfillment that goes beyond any fame, money or what any celebrity life style could give. Nicole’s partnership with Carroll will be featured on the website giving people the opportunity to buy fine art prints of the painting of Carroll autographed by her. Only 15 prints available with every print sold benefiting orphans in South Sudan from the organization Angels of East Africa (for more info about the organization visit www.machinegunpreacher.org) Here, artist, Nicole Troup speaks to Madeline Carroll about movies, life, her inspirational journey, what the painting means to her and what she hopes others will see when viewing it at Nicole Troup’s future NYC inspiring art show “Deeper Than Fame.” NICOLE TROUP - Tell me about your upbringing and how you broke into the movie business.
106 | MetMagNy.com | 25AMagazine.com
MADELINE CARROLL - I was in a nail salon in Los Angeles when I was three years old. I talked a lot as a kid and it just so happened that the woman sitting behind me was a talent agent. She heard me talking and turned around thinking I was about six or seven years, but to her surprise it was just little three year old me. She wanted my mom to bring me by the agency so she did. They ended up signing me to the agency and I have been acting ever since. What is your film histor y and what Hollywood talent have you worked with? I have been acting most of my life so I have had opportunities to work with many Hollywood talents such as: Rob Reiner, Michael Forester, Joshua Michael Stern, Michael Waters, Kevin Costner, Gerard butler, Dennis hopper, Nathan lane, Stanley Tucci, Dennis Quaid, George Lopez, Jackie Chan, Jim Carey , T im
Allen, Patrick Dempsey, Tim Roth, Carla Gugino , Amber Valetta, Kelsey Grammar, and Michael Shannon just to name a few of them. I have been so blessed to work with all lovely people and I haven’t had any bad experiences. What movies are you currently working on? L a s t y e a r I re c e i v e d a w o n d e r f u l opportunity to work on a faith based film called “God Bless the Broken Road” directed by Harold Cronk (he directed the “God’s Not Dead” films ) and it opened the door for me to start a whole faith based film chapter. This was a turning point for me, because I was thinking about quitting acting altogether. But I prayed about it and felt God moving me in this direction! After the movie “God Bless the Broken Road,” I was in the movie “I can only imagine” directed by Jon and andy Erwin “Woodlawn” and then the movie
“Indivisible” produced by Sarah Drew (“Grey’s Anatomy” star). I just wrapped a film called “Pistachio” with Denise Richards, directed by my first female director, Anna Elizabeth James! It’s been a good year, God has moved so much in my life and I am so thankful. Tell me about your faith and the greatest lesson you’ve learned in life? I have always been a believer in Christ since I was little and have developed my own relationship with him when I was around nine years old. I just knew God was always real in my life. One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is that at the end of the day everything comes from God. You can try your hardest, but it is up to God to do the rest. I pray all the time for God’s will in my life and for him to open and close the right doors, because his ways are higher than our ways and his thoughts higher than our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9). One movie in particular that you had a role in stands out to me and that is the “Machine Gun Preacher” starring Gerard Butler. This tells the true life story a man named Sam Childers (aka Machine Gun Preacher) who left his drug and crime fighting ways to become a Christian and then rescue children from the war in South Sudan. In what ways has this powerful story of Sam impacted you? I still remember reading that script to this day. I was so moved by it that that it brought my mom and I to tears when reading it. It opened my eyes to the suffering that was out there that I didn’t understand before. We know people are hurting all around the world but I didn’t know about Sam Childers story (founder of Angels of East Africa) and the children that were suffering in South Sudan. I remember thinking to my self that “I have to book this movie and tell this story because it is too important.” I was so blessed to be a part of that movie and with everyone involved in it. My favorite part was meeting Sam. He is an intimidating person but has a courageous, sweet and lovely side to him. It is amazing to see people risking their life to help others. That is characteristic of a true servant.
asked me. This is a great way to get my story and message of faith out there. I think the painting captures my strength and the struggles I’ve went through in life and the movie business. It has been very tough and a lot of people don’t understand it. I have been practicing resilience for years so it is very hard. In the painting I also see peace and joy and that the hardships don’t happen for no reason! What hidden message is in the painting and what does it mean to you? Philippians 4:13 his hidden somewhere in the painting for viewers to find. The verse states. “I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me.” Another one of my favorite verses that I feel speaks loudly in the painting and in the expression is: “No weapon that is formed against you will prosper; And every tongue that accuses you in judgment you will condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, And their vindication is from Me,” declares the LORD. These are a few of my favorite verses and ones that I pray about all the time!
The painting will be showcased along with your story in my future art exhibit along with other portraits of public figures and celebrities and their stories. How do you hope your story speak to others? I hope I can help inspire others to be bold for God, because when you are bold for Him, He will be bold for you. God has shown up for me every time I’ve ever put him first. ALWAYS. When we are with him we are the head and not the tail. We are above and not beneath. I want people to choose not to compromise their faith but choose to fight the good fight. It is easy to go along with the crowd but hard to be set apart which is far more rewarding. What goals or dreams do you hope to achieve in your life and career in the future? I want to act, write, direct and produce wherever I feel God leads me to go. I would love to also start making my own films one day. Hopefully that will happen soon. I want to have my God given life not my Madeline chosen life and pray I am able to do it all to the fullest extent.
What are your thoughts about the painting and most importantly what do you think it captures about yourself? I love the painting and cannot believe someone painted me. I haven’t had that done before so I was thrilled when you

INTIMATE KNOWLEDGE OF THE FACIAL ANATOM Y Joel E. Kopelman, MD FACS, Park Avenue Oculo-Facial Plastic Surgeon B Y ADAM K LUG E R
J
oel E. Kopelman, MD FACS, P a r k Av e n u e O c u l o - F a c i a l Plastic Surgeon takes a comprehensive look at why you should always choose an expert when deciding to get cosmetic fillers. According to Dr. Joel Kopelman, facial fillers are amongst the most pervasive cosmetic procedures in the world. They have gained this popularity because in most cases they are safe, they can help to restore facial balance and symmetry and the improvement is seen immediately with little or no downtime. “A number of non-invasive or short recovery procedures are increasingly more popular ... people do not want to have long recuperations. Injectables have become very popular in terms of cosmetic procedures that are done around the world because #1 they are safe. They’re fast. There are very few risks and virtually no recovery time...and
110 | MetMagNy.com | 25AMagazine.com
there can be some very dramatic results, dramatic improvements...” Dr. Joel Kopelman says that facial hyaluronic acid fillers like Restylane, Juvederm and Belotero have many cosmetic uses. They can treat “laugh” lines around your mouth, forehead lines, under eye dark circles, hollow upper eyelids, sunken cheeks, and temples, poorly defined jaw lines, and can straighten the contour of your nose. In most cases, the treatments are associated with minimal risks provided the injector has experience and takes the appropriate precautions. However, just like any other medical procedure, experience counts! As one of the first physicians in the United States to uses fillers to restore facial volume, Dr. Kopelman has many years of experience and has perfected the techniques that consistently produces natural looking results. “the average person coming to me is about 4555 usually female but we are seeing increasing numbers of men who also want to look more competitive in the world or just want to look better... I have a number of gay men who are my patients as well who feel that after they are 30 they lose some confidence in themselves so I consider what I do in this world to be very important for them too. I worked in Beverly Hills, I did a fellowship at UCLA -- the year I spent at UCLA on my fellowship we operated on many movie stars and clients but I’m not willing to drop names of people in terms of using them and exploiting them. Every patient in front of me is extremely important, everybody is on equal footing whether you are rich or poor I treat everyone the same. I treat every patient with great attention and care-I try to look at them and be very honest with them and not try to exploit them in any way --and just say “this is what you need --don’t overdo it... be realistic about what we should do here...take baby steps and not major steps and then when you digest what you have done, then you can decide if you want to go any further in the future.” Not All Injectors Deliver the Same High Quality Results
“I have two aspects of my practice one is reconstructive and one is what I call truly cosmetic or aesthetic and the aesthetic side I think it gives people renewed confidence in their social interactions and I think it makes them feel good and basically I think that is the essence of what doing cosmetic surgery is about...giving greater happiness to a person in terms of their interaction with the world at large. The reconstructive side is also critically important --if I can put somebody back together -if they had cancer or I remove a cancer and I’m talking about skin cancers now and I can piece back their face their body in such a way that they have minimal residual evidence of that defect then I feel like I gave the patient a lot of hope and it’s very important to restore their function and that’s certainly one of the critical things that I do.... Sometimes I make improvements in their ability to see as well. like for instance when I elevate their eyelids their field of vision improves. There’s a lot of things that I do that have to do with the eyelids , I’m an eyelid specialist I’m an ocular plastic surgeon.” Because fillers are offered on virtually ever y corner of New York City is there really a difference between one injector and another? When you visit Dr. Joel Kopelman, you are coming to an “expert” injector who has acquired these skills not only as a oculofacial plastic surgeon with more than thirty years of experience but as an injector with highly developed aesthetic sensibilities and unparalleled visual acuity, who has intimate knowledge of the facial and eyelid anatomy, and who has been injecting hyaluronic acid gels for more than twenty years. “I was always interested in art and I was interested in science so I obviously became a Doctor first...and then I eventually moved into the field that matched my personality...There are artistic sensibilities that you have to bring to surgery when you do cosmetic surgery... It’s like a person who hears music and can understand the music on a deeper level and I think when I look at things in art I have a very acute visual eye. I think that my ability to critique a face in terms of symmetry and the way that someone
looks and how I can help them, it has a lot to do with my ability, my visual acuity. The sharpness of my assessment has a lot to do with my aesthetic sensibility.” Dr. Joel Kopelman also has the knowledge and critical eye to know which product is best suited to treat the eyelid or other parts of the face. There are specific injectables that are designed to treat specific problems. Choosing the right one can make all the difference. For example some products, like Juvederm, create too much swelling when injected under the eyes and therefore are not suited to treat deep dark under eye circles. Restylane is a better choice. Other products (like Voluma) produce more of a lifting effect and therefore are a better choice to lift the cheeks. Furthermore, Dr. Kopelman knows what level the injection must be placed to obtain the best result without precipitating unwanted side-effects. He will recommend the precise volume you need to replace lost volume and nothing more. Injecting too many vials of Juvederm or Restylane will produce exaggerated unnatural results. “Sometimes I have to modulate the patient’s expectations if they have unrealistic expectations I have to tell them that what they are asking for is not possible. I’m very honest...very, very honest... and I do very precise work and I’m a greater critic of my work than anyone else so if I see something isn’t just perfect I’m not satisfied, I can’t sleep till it is done to my level of expectations. I think I’m a perfectionist yes. I’m a perfectionist...and I’m very exacting about what I do and what I expect and my expectations are higher than the patient’s expectations most of the time.” D r. J o e l K o p e l m a n ’s u l t i m a t e g o a l i s to rejuvenate a patient’s appearance by eliminating facial folds and creases and restoring lost volume to the cheeks, lips, and jaw line. “The trend has been that people forestall major surger y basically with the use of injectables treatments like restalyne, uviderm, botox and so forth... In some instances, injections alone won’t
do the trick you really do need to have surgery or restorative, beautiful contours. That’s where things have been going. There have been greater and greater attempts by laser companies to have devices that give you shorter recovery and that’s understandable because everybody wants to get back to their social or professional lives. However, some of these short term fixes are just what they are- they are short term fixes - they are not longlasting in terms of the kinds of results you get with surgery but with surgery there has to be some recovery time.” Dr. Joel Kopelman Expert Eyelid & Facial Injector In New York City. Although fillers are very common, they must be injected by an expert. Over 2 million people in the United States have had a hyaluronic acid filler injections. With this increased popularity, more and more physicians and nurses are starting to offer filler injections. However, this does not guarantee that everyone who is injecting filler is truly qualified to be doing so, especially in the eyelid area. When looking for a physician to inject filler either for under eye circles, hollow upper eyelids or hollow temples, it is very important to find an oculoplastic surgeon who has extensive knowledge of the eyelid structures and anatomy and years of experience to ensure a patient’s safety. “Some people will say oh you should do a facelift, a brow lift and your eyes and do a chin implant have your breasts elevated and do breast implants and liposuction all in one day-- and that type of thing just ends up to be a big mess --because... if you do pieces of the puzzle ..you end up with better results rather than try to do everything at once. It’s like cooking if you have too many pots on the stove then something’s going to blow over or something is not going to come out right-- if you have one item that you are cooking, you are much more likely to get a better result because you have the focus on that one particular thing. So I don’t believe in doing too many things in one day...” In addition Dr. Joel Kopelman, goes even
further to keep all his patients safe. He injects fillers using blunt tipped micro-cannulas rather than sharp needles, particularly around the upper and lower eyelids. Blunt micro-cannulas minimize the chance that a blood vessel will be penetrated which reduces the incidence of bruising or other complications. By using micro-cannulas, Dr. Kopelman can reach many areas through one or two entry points which allows him to strategically place the filler at the right depth and minimize side-effects. Dr. Joel Kopelman, MD FACS, Park Avenue Oculo-Facial Plastic Surgeon’s Four Key Take Away Points to consider before you choose the right injector: 1. Cannulas are blunt tipped “needles that cause less bruising and because the blunt tip doesn’t penetrate blood vessels easily it is a safer option when you are injected near your eyes. 2. Cannulas also have the advantage that they can deliver the filler through a single port and this reduces the number of skin punctures which reduces bruising. There is a learning curve when using microcannulas, so make sure your injector is wellexperienced in using one. 3. When the cannula is used one entry site is usually sufficient to deliver the filler to many locations. With the needle, this is less so, and multiple sticks are needed, which is more traumatic and likely to lead to more bruising. 4. Choose an expert injector with years of experience who knows which product best fits your particular problem, an in-depth knowledge of facial anatomy and knows how to correct complications should they occur. The pursuit of excellence in medicine has been both a professional and personal, lifelong, family commitment for Dr. Joel and the Kopelman family. “I have a son and daughter who are both in medical school ...I think medicine is the greatest profession of all...I consider it to be the highest profession...”when my family is happy I’m happy ...I get great satisfaction from both my family we spend a lot of time together and then I also get a lot of gratification as a doctor... so I have a good balance.” Dr. Joel Kopelman, MD FACS, Park Avenue Oculo-Facial Plastic Surgeon can be reached at: Joel E. IT CAME JUST A LITTLE LATE BY L A U R EN DAMR I CH | PHO TO B Y CANDLE R B R O WN
G
azing from a distance at my life from afar, it appears to be going smashingly. I have my own radio show, singing on records, acting in movies, own my fitness company and a screenwriter, but looks can be deceptive. My life has been far from the fairytale I envisioned. A thrilling work life I lead now but I fought many wars and walked away with battle scars and a bag full of baggage. I always assume there are more battles to come so it changes my investments in relationships and my career. Violence came early in my life. That black shadow haunted me and took over my self esteem and trusts. It twisted me into a different person. I am an anomaly because who would live their life openly in the public’s eye while my demons crawl through my mind constantly unfolding in front of my listeners. This is a interesting trait as a hosts speaking my mind to thousands of listeners Coming from a affluent socialite family of the South, the women of my generation were taught to be seen not heard and as long as you go to the right college, the right sorority, in the right social status then you will always fit in and be accepted. I was all those things. Yet, my self esteem was still lost and could not be found. I knew early I wanted to be a entertainer. I moved to Los Angeles and signed with modeling agency and lived with childhood friend, Courteney Cox. Courteney was in the throws of her success and there was never any jealous at all from me but I slid more into a roll of an assistant and roomate. It was comfortable for me because it emulated how I was raised. I was to morph into another person’s life instead of creating my own. Living in the shadows of others was more comfortable. I later found out this would
112 | MetMagNy.com | 25AMagazine.com
prove to be my achilles heel. But livinging in that life of fast moving entertainment world of success was too much and I felt out of place. Courteney had a amazing drive and backbone. I admired it but knew I would never acquire it, unfortunately. We ran with A list stars all the while realizing I was not wired like they were in their confidence level. Returning home, I found myself lost as so many of my friends were already married and living the dream. Feeling the need to get married quickly, I married the first one that asked. How can you claim it was the worst mistake in my life filled with so much pain, when my two beautiful babies came from it? I can never find the words to explain what it did to me and how it changed me forever. Still, I have my children who are the only things that have pulled me out of the darkest places imaginable. So for whatever the reason, I was supposed to go through that part of my life.
The two years I spent with my two babies was to this day the fondest memories I have with us living in bliss. Our home was a home filled with love and happiness. In walks who I thought was prince charming. The first man I really trusted completely. All I can say it was a set up in which my money, house and children’s savings account were taken and there were three in our marriage and I was unaware of her presence. Then came my soul mate whom I spent two glorious years until traumatized by his death. We went running before heading out of town. He had a heart attack. I performed CPR forever it seemed but I could not save him. Where could I go from here after all of this? In the midst of my second divorce, I wrote my first movie and then my second. I poured my misery and pain in to each of them. It was cathartic and freed me from so much pain and anger. I started to find a part of a life again and enjoyed it. I was asked to appear on a radio station in N.Y to talk about my movies. At that moment came my realization. There was a reason that I had been through so much trauma. These heartaches lead me to this new happy confident life. Touching others that needed support from someone who has lived through it and was not ashamed. I knew I had the ability to empower others that felt lost and alone. Then Stephen Miller offered me my first show and I slipped into a new life. Now, a career I love which gives back more than I could relay to my listeners. I then moved to Village Connection. Cosmopolitans with Lauren gives me the opportunity to reach out and entertain others. It also returned me back my second love, writing. I blog on beauty, health and fashion. Stressing to others to be truly healthy you have to be both physically and emotionally healthy. They both work in tandem to create peace within yourself. I speak for victims of PTSD, soldiers or abuse victims that feel they have no voice. I am finally happy, self assured and confident what my life was meant for and that is to entertain with laughter, fun and speak for those that have no voice.

he Endometriosis Foundation of America (EndoFound) is presenting Grammynominated singer-songwriter, Halsey with the Blossom Award at its Ninth Annual Blossom Ball at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City. The Blossom Award acknowledges extraordinary individuals who inspire, advocate and help enact change in women’s healthcare leading to better lives for women, particularly those suffering from endometriosis. “Halsey is a vital voice for her generation,” says Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi, co-founder of EndoFound with endometriosis specialist and distinguished laparoscopic surgeon Tamer Seckin. “Not only is she an amazing singer-songwriter, but she is also a wonderful advocate for women and their health and well-being. She’s been on my radar for the last several years because of how outspoken she’s been with her own journey. I salute her 114 | MetMagNy.com | 25AMagazine.com
for being so open about her struggle with endometriosis and am honored to have EndoFound recognize her efforts this year.” The twenty-three-year-old has shown incredible strength, becoming a role model for so many young women. While she’s enjoyed a meteoric rise as an artist, she’s also simultaneously grappled with painful endometriosis resulting in multiple surgeries. And throughout, Halsey has been open with her fans, providing a raw honesty about the difficult journey so many women with this disease experience. In pain and recovering from yet another related surgery, she said this to her followers: “If you suffer from chronic pain or a debilitating disease please know that I have found time to live a crazy, wild, rewarding life AND balance my treatment and I hope so much in my heart that you can too.” Halsey’s courage has helped dispel the stigma that surrounds this disease, which affects 1 in 10 women of reproductive
age. It’s the third leading cause of female infertility and one of the most misdiagnosed (yet treatable) diseases. Most doctors receive little training in medical school about endometriosis. And as a result, a woman can suffer for years before getting the correct diagnosis and care. In addition to honoring Halsey, the Blossom Ball will include a performance by the Resistance Revival Chorus, who recently took the stage with Kesha at this year’s Grammy Awards. March is Endometriosis Awareness Month, and the fundraising for this event will allow EndoFound to continue its mission to increase disease recognition, provide advocacy, educate young girls and fund landmark endometriosis research. The Honorary Committee this year includes Ann Curry, Lena Dunham, Dr. Mehmet Oz, former New York Governor David Paterson and Eileen Guggenheim. endofound.org/blossomball
