“Sooner or later, everything old is new again.” - Stephen King When our good friend and respected news anchor Michelle Makori recently invited me back on i24News to discuss the surging popularity of magazines, of course, I said yes to my brilliant friend who hosts and supervises that terrific news outlet. There are a number of factors at play as to why magazines are hotter than ever, but the most important one is trust. According to a 2018 study, consumers view magazines as being more trustworthy, accurate and impartial than all other forms of media. Since 2017 there are over 130 new magazine titles that have launched, despite the fact that most Americans consume some form of media from their mobile devices. But the digital space has become over-crowded with bloggers, influencers, editors, marketers, all shouting over each other. It’s a lot of noise and it’s hard to digest sometimes. Magazines are elegant and intimate and create a visceral experience for consumers. It’s REAL. you can hold it, feel it. Enjoy it. Recently, a number of major brands with huge on-line audiences have launched their own magazines. Why? Because they know that magazines confer a greater sense of credibility. Even Facebook has brought out its own magazine called GROW. The dating site Bumble now has a magazine with tennis star Serena Williams in its debut issue. Uber, the car service has three magazines! “Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the assessment that something else is more important than fear.” - FDR As a cub CNN Showbiz Today producer in the 90’s I didn’t know what to expect when I went out on my first shoot with Mike Gittelman. Or simply Gittelman to everybody at CNN. Tall, bald, bearded and having perfected sarcasm as a science, Gittelman was not one to suffer fools lightly as I discovered on occasion if I ever crossed the line and acted a fool. I must have done ok on our first shoot together because Mike offered me a compliment of sorts. “You did ok, but you’re no Dave Sirulnick.” “Who’s that?” “Only the best field producer Showbiz ever had.” “Can you teach me to be better?” That was all I had to ask. Mike took it from there. He explained what I was doing wrong and what I needed to do right. Mostly not piss him off and stay out of the way. It may have been my showbiz assignment to cover but ultimately it was always Mike’s shoot, regardless of the on-air talent or producer. Mike would grumble and complain and offer sarcastic witticisms and it was a ritual that let you know he cared. A lot. He wanted to do great work and no mediocre publicists or producers or reporters would get in the way of Mike’s pursuit of excellence. Working a movie premiere was akin to strategizing a battle against other crews, annoying publicists and lame/idiotic producers. Mike made every shoot fun. He got the juices flowing. I can see him hoisting that heavy ENG Camera atop his shoulder again and again with soldier-like precision. It was no secret that Mike was one of my favorite cameramen to work with just like Drew Crossman was one of my favorite editors. Mike watched my back and corrected my mistakes and gave me plenty of sarcasm and on occasion when he was feeling excited about a successful shoot, even a small compliment,” Hey! You didn’t screw that one up like usual Klugie-man.” No, I would never be as good as Dave Sirulnick in his book but I had become adequate and not as annoying over the 10 or so years we worked events like Woodstock, movie premieres and countless Showbiz this Weekend shoots with Bill Tush, who if you didn’t know, is also a master of a timely quip or sarcastic response. Bill and Mike and me and Todd or Steve or Tony or Zack or Vince or Roy...or whoever was lucky enough to get paired with Gittelman. You knew the shoot would go well. You knew that Mike would get the job done. You knew there would be laughs and life lessons and there was nowhere else in the world you wanted to be despite the griping. I guess you could call that love. Adam Kluger CNN Field Producer, 1990-2000 Post-script: When the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 leveled NYC’s Twin Towers, Mike Gittelman was there at Ground Zero fearlessly capturing images for shocked and frightened Manhattanites and Americans. Mike recently passed away from exposure to 9-11 toxins. Mike Gittelman was my friend. He was also a hero. Thank you.

T
he chant of “Jerry! Jerry! Jerry!” screamed appreciatively and in unison by a TV audience on the edge of total chaos, is perhaps, talk show host Jerry Springer’s enduring television legacy. When “The Jerry Springer Show” debuted on September 30, 1991 it changed the face of television. All too-human guests would be encouraged to reveal and discover bizarre truths about themselves and their relationships that would often lead to on-air humiliation, retribution and ultimately verbal and physical conflict. Train wreck TV that was impossible to look away from. Guests would line up for the chance to duke it out while being egged on by a room full of strangers and a global audience around the world. Jerry Springer was the on-air ringleader of this
grotesque carnival of human emotion. Even one of his security guards Steve Wilkos, would end up with a spin-off show as a reward for all the bruises and scratches he sustained while keeping guests from doing serious bodily harm to each other.
His talk show no matter how volcanic and unpredictable always ended on a positive note. Springer would bring his the audience and guests back from the brink of insanity by throwing some light on the core issues plaguing his guests.
On a New York City brownstone stoop, the legendary talk show host reminisced.
“The show was so crazy for an hour. My guests were expressing how they felt with their problems that meant a lot to them; the only censor we would have was for foul language. I also wanted to make it clear that I was not endorsing their behavior. I felt the responsibility to close the show with my opinion.”
“These guests were so outrageous, yet they came on the show with real problems. Let’s say we’d be having dinner, and you disclosed something funny that happened at the water cooler at work, and we’d chuckle, afterward you’d ask me, Jerry, how was your day? Well, I met this guy who married his horse. I had such an incredible time doing the show because the stories were so shocking.”
Springer would typically close out each raucous episode with this bit of advice, “Take care of yourself and each other”

Springer explains, “That is my political philosophy, being a liberal we should take care of ourselves, and we have a human responsibility to take care of each other. I felt fortunate to be able to tell the world that. It’s just decency.” I asked Jerry if he ever thought that his ratings would have decreased if all the craziness and misconduct had been edited out of the show. Jerry paused for a moment and then replied, “History demonstrates that if we had a show like Oprah Winfrey, or Ellen DeGeneres it would have been, to an even greater extent, a prevalent show since more people would have viewed it. We sort of restricted our audience and sponsors. Now that we have a Judge show, we are in the clear.” Springer had officially called it quits when his last episode of “The Jerry Springer Show” aired on July 26, 2018. Springer figured he would settle into a comfortable retirement. That idea was short-lived as NBC quickly offered him a new courtroom show called “Judge Jerry.” premiering this fall on NBC. It’s been well documented that Springer was once a legal counselor before he ventured into show business. Gerald Norman Springer was born in London, England on February 13, 1944, to Richard Springer, a shoe shop owner and Margot Kallman who both were Jewish refugees who escaped certain death during the Holocaust. Sadly, Springer lost both of his grandmothers and an uncle in the concentration camps. Springer and his parents landed in America in 1949 when Springer was five years old; they settled in Kew Garden Queens, N.Y. Growing up into a political family, Jerry’s parents encouraged him and his younger sister Evelyn to talk about a topic they read in the paper at supper each day. At a young age, Springer was inspired by President John F. Kennedy. After

Springer graduated from Northwestern University in 1968, he was thrilled to work with JFK’s brother Bobby Kennedy. Tragically, that experience was brief, as Bobby Kennedy was assassinated on June 6, 1968. Springer reflected wistfully, “In the brief period of time I had with him, he had the greatest effect on my political perspectives than any other politician in my lifetime.” When Springer was 33, he became the 56th Mayor of Cincinnati, “It was the best job I ever had.” Springer admitted that as the Mayor, he gave away keys to the city to all his favorite rock stars such as Bob Dylan, Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, the Eagles, and the Steve Miller band so that they would put on a show and that he could meet them. Jerry Springer says he’s had a fulfilling life and what he enjoys most is being with his family. On his off days, he told Metropolitan Magazine, that he likes to “rob banks and start wars,” that’s just the humor of this marvelous man. Springer has a beloved daughter Katie and we couldn’t get Jerry to
stop talking about his adorable ten-year-old grandson, Richard who is clearly the light of his life and named after Jerry’s dad. The proud Grandpa wishes he can see more of his grandson’s ball games in person yet he is still able to watch every one of Richard’s games on his phone. For now, Jerry Springer will bring his talents and wisdom to a new courtroom where he will provide entertainment and dole out plenty of advice as Judge Jerry. A Day With Jerry: The Metropolitan crew showed up at a luxurious townhouse in N.Y.C listed by Real Estate Board of New York first Prize winner Heather E. Stein. Jerry Springer and his crew made their way up the stairs and we couldn’t believe we were in the presence of a man who has done it all. An actor, daytime talk show host, producer, former lawyer, politician, and now a Judge. Jill Lotenberg, our veteran cover photographer, directed her crew on lights, camera, and then we were ready for action.
Mr. Springer made jokes with our make-up and hair husband and wife team David and Yana Lak of David’s Salon located at 156-20 Crossbay Blvd, Howard Beach, N.Y. I was happy to direct Mr. Springer on his angles, and he even serenaded us with Hank Williams, “Cold Heart” in-between takes. He liquefied our hearts with his singing and his warmth. Our publisher Chase Backer popped in to make sure he got the perfect cover shot. Mr. Springer was so kind to head to the ground floor and greet Chase’s elder father, who could not make it up the stairs. What a mensch! It ended up being a long shoot, however, we all felt Mr. Springer’s consideration, humble nature and appreciation. DJ HESTA PRYNN BY ADAM KLUGER How would you describe your repertoire and style as a DJ. HESTA: I came up in a band and then as a songwriter, I wasn’t trying to create my style in a conscious way, but I would be in songwriting sessions with big artists and I’d reference all of these different tracks “kind of like this” or “do you remember this one?” I kept getting the same feedback, like “you know every single song ever” type of stuff, even from these really famous rappers and producers. Before that I kind of thought everyone knew all of these songs. I really started DJing in that way, making playlists of all of the records I was referencing in songwriting sessions, remembering all of these songs that I Ioved and gauging people’s reaction to them in the studio. Favorite artists? HESTA: I am known for DJing in many genres, I have so many favorites. In no particular order, some of my loves are: Jidenna, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga, The Pixies, Fela Kuti, Slipknot, The Temptations, Mary Jane Girls, Drake, LL Cool J, Tori Amos, Diplo, Dmitri from Vegas, Talking Heads, Santigold, Robyn, Anderson Paak, Michael Kiwanuka, Miguel - the list goes on... How did Questlove influence you? HESTA: So then I spent some time on tour and in the studio with Questlove and OH YEAH here’s the guy who invented this - knowing every song and referencing all of the records and having a point of view, teaching you in his sets. When I started to get bigger gigs, and really flexing these “theme” mixes which I was kind of becoming known for, I would always think “what would Ahmir do here” or “how would I impress Ahmir w this idea?” I thought no one was really listening but I was doing it to impress him in my mind. it turns out Questlove was in the audience quite a few times and he gave me amazing feedback, that really boosted my confidence early on and helped me push myself to get better.

How were you able to switch over to DJing and become so successful? your client list is awesome. HESTA: Aw thanks :) I told a great story about a big set I did at Bonnaroo on vinyl opening for Q-Tip. I tried REALLY REALLY REALLY hard to be creative and use my ear and SHOW UP at some gigs early on that turned out to be incredibly important for my career - with Spotify in particular. People started to think of me as someone who was super professional who could play in literally every genre to (literally) every audience. I was doing car events, fashion events, tech events, I even DJed a baby fashion show for Huggies early on (no lie) Rebecca Romijn was the host and I got gigs out of that. My clients know that they can count on me and that I’ll make it great for them, I tried hard every time and I still do. How important is it for you to be aligned with certain charities and women’s causes? HESTA: So important. I have a long history working in the “women’s space” as we say, with candidates and charities, female artists, everything. I have a young daughter, the future matters to me. After 2016 I started to be more vocal about this, I want to be part of everything that benefits women, I’m lucky to have a lot of great clients doing this in so many ways - WWE, Twitter, She Runs It, many more. How are the ladies from Northern State doing? Do you all stay in touch? What are some memories from that time? HESTA: Yes we are very much in touch I speak to both of them all the time. We got together in NYC a few months ago and tried to plan a reunion, I was mostly interested in the drinks and gabbing though, kind of an occupational hazard of having been in a band w your bffs for years! (It’s not off the table tho) Ad Rock of the Beastie Boys was a fan? HESTA: I’d say we were mutual fans to put it mildly. Truly though it was beyond a dream come true to

work with Adam on some of the tracks for our last record. I have worked with so many of my heroes - Adam, The Roots, DJ Muggs, Pete Rock, Chuck D - it’s incredibly humbling and also incredibly weird. What are some of your favorite memories of NYC in the 90’s HESTA: My formative years are falling asleep to Hot 97 on a stereo, using a fake ID that I bought on 8th street (it said I was 18) to go see bands play, hanging out on the LES, listening to the Beastie Boys, Michael Rapaport movies, Riot Grrrl zines on mail order.... “Can We Go Wrong” may be one of the greatest music videos of all time--the song is pretty fucking amazing too...stories on the track and the video? HESTA: Thank you it’s one of the things I am most proud of ever having been part of. The video was created by my now husband Randy Scott Slavin, we met on the set. He took over 13K photos of me and put them together in stop motion. It was a high school art project basically, and we fell in love. We work on a lot of different projects now, we produce events together. What’s a pop music ghost writer? HESTA: Someone who writes your songs for or with you. Does your daughter get into your music? Does she dig your career? HESTA: She can DJ a little bit - her name is DJ Kitty Cat. She has her own favorite songs, I always ask her WHY she likes a song. Now she’s five, she’ll tell me she loves Sucker by the Jonas Brothers because there’s whistling, so I’ll play her the Beach Boys and Peter Bjorn & John and a whole bunch of other songs with whistling in them. That’s also how I put my Dj sets together - how does this song lead to that one lead to the next one...

T
hree years ago, August of 2017, when I had the opportunity to be in the press room to meet the number one rider in the country (and the winner of last year’s $300,000 Hampton Classic Grand Prix), McLain Ward, I brought Evangeline with me (along with her identical twin sister, Annabelle, who also rides). My question to Ward was “What do you do to inspire young people? My daughter has embraced riding so passionately, what can you say to her to motivate her further?” McLain’s response was a bit underwhelming. And he knew it. A few moments later, he politely interrupted and asked Classic Communications owner/host, Marty Bauman, if he could have a do over. Everyone laughed. So he turned his attention to Evangeline once again, and addressed her directly: “You know Evangeline, I really didn’t like my response to you. You know what I do to inspire young people,” he asked her? He stood up from his chair on the press podium, walked over to her and took off his Longines winning riding cap and put it on her head. “THIS is how I inspire young people.” Everybody laughed, Evangeline was thrilled and McLain had, not only made his point, but he had achieved his

goal: to inspire. He spoke with Evangeline privately afterwards. She expressed her desire to compete and he told her, “Do it!” And she did.

Anything you can add?” McLain was obviously thrilled, smiling from ear to ear. Next thing you know, the photographers ask if Evangeline could come up on the podium and be photographed with McLain and the Hampton Classic Grand Prix winners. At the same time, Chronicle of the Horse (the oldest equestrian magazine in existence) loves this feel good story and writes 1000 words about it. Domenic tell us about your books and their themes? The main themes in my books are Virtue, Valor, Liberty and Freedom and the impact a virtuous and courageous individual can have on society. I like to explore how individuals with virtue and valor can lift up families, communities and even a nation. I try to highlight that societies that highly value virtue and valor have been and will be a shining beacon of freedom and liberty to the whole world. Is this true for all your books? It is more obvious in some of my works than in others but it is a major focus in my Swords of Valor Trilogy. In these three books I illustrate that families, communities, societies and nations cannot remain free for long if Virtue and Valor are missing. This is true because history has proven that Freedom and Liberty are directly dependent on the virtue inherent in and expected of individuals of that society. It is supported and defended through the valor inherent in and driven by their respect for the sacrifices made on their behalf by those who came before them. So beyond being exciting, well written adventure stories, there seems to be a very spiritual aspect to these books too, yes? I have spiritual components and civic moral components in the books. For example, in the Swords of Valor trilogy, the Swords are manifestations of different virtues and are the support of the valor inherent in the persons wielding them. In the first book Season of the Swords, the main point is that personal virtue matters, family virtue matters, and that collective valor matters to society. The message of the second book Sword of the Gray Champion, is more about how virtue and valor can erode over time in an unchallenged society that is free from want and strife. That erosion of virtue and valor can lead to great evil and eventually enslavement. The Virtue and Valor of a society determines its liberty and freedoms. How important is your faith to you as a writer? My faith has been a huge part of my life. Even when I wasn’t living it out perfectly, it was my primary identity. From the beginning of my writing, God, family, faith and virtue have been an integral part of my books and my poetry. I have always felt that if my writing does not add some value to the reader, it was a waste of their time and mine. It should give them an additional perspective. Good literature broadens our perspectives but more importantly it is about unveiling truth. It’s about discovering, remembering, relaying truth. One of my favorite quotes is “Fiction is the lie through which we tell the truth,” by Albert Camus. Truth can be difficult to understand and even harder to tell, but in fiction, truth becomes palatable. My truth is my faith which shapes my worldview, which informs my writing.

Who are your greatest literary influences? CS Lewis, GK Chesterton, JRR Tolkien, Dante Alighieri, Taylor Caldwell. CS Lewis, JRR Tolkien, GK Chesterton, Dante Alighieri, Taylor Caldwell. I believe that all the names I just mentioned were great writers because of their Christian faith, not in spite of it. They appreciated the inherent goodness of God’s creation; they knew the consequences of mankind’s Fall; they relished the hope of Christ’s resurrection, and anticipated the day of His redemption. They combined immense talent with an urge to tell stories, and then, armed with their worldview, they made sense of a seemingly pointless world through their stories. Their books and poems provided eternal significance to the mundane; they held out hope while never flinching from the cold, hard truth of life in a sin-afflicted world. As a result, their works are appreciated today across the entire breadth of our literary culture. When I read these great authors and felt the power of their works I said to myself, I want to do that!
JRR Tolkien: The Hobbit and the rest of his body of work had such imagery, such despair, such hopelessness. But then there was always the ultimate Salvation. He took me on a rollercoaster of emotions over and over again. Here we have a Christian person writing with such power who charmed millions with stories that are full of wonder, and yet profoundly biblical. I wanted to do that. Dante: The Divine Comedy held images of horror and beauty, despair and hope, struggle and redemption that enthralled me for days….I wanted to do that. Taylor Caldwell: My mothers’ favorite author, she and I read many of her books such as Dear and Glorious Physician, A Pillar of Iron, The Listener. Taylor Caldwell was a Christian author writing as if she had been there in the past witnessing the events in her stories. As if she was having conversations with her biblical and historical characters and all you were doing was listening in on their conversations….I wanted to do that.
CS Lewis: When CS Lewis wrote The Chronicles of Narnia, he had no theological agenda. There was no ulterior, evangelistic motive; he simply hoped to create likable stories. But his Christian worldview was as elemental to him as blood and bone. And his characters, plots, symbols, and themes are products of that. In his stories behind the words, we see the story of Creation, the temptation in the Garden and the Fall. We also witness death, judgment. Heaven and Hell both are represented in the pages of Lewis’s fantasy. The figure of Aslan tells us more of how Lewis understood the nature of God than anything else he wrote. Lewis wasn’t smuggling Christian theology into the minds of young readers, it just seeped through; it poured out of the man and onto the page, likely causing his claims of Christianity to ring true when readers later met them. I wanted to do that. With my Swords of Valor trilogy, I hope I have succeeded in emulating my literary influences and accomplished all of the things, that after reading them, I wanted to do.

The recent announcement of MIT/ Microsoft’s collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum of Art has AI curating selections for you, directed by social channels which point you to its chosen preferences. AI has now arrived full speed into the art world and culture. I wanted to dive deeper into how Chicago manages to stay in the top ranks of artfairs, and what changes they are making to shift quickly to stay current with the fast pace of changing markets. With all the current buzz regarding artfairs being in jeopardy due to terms such as “context collapse”, Mr. Karman takes time to reconfirm to us that regional artfairs still reign with laser focus and commitment to quality. In the new cultural

ecosystem, many are returning to carefully selected artfairs which continue to inspire and speak to regional communities and cities. The artfairs located in Portugal, Spain, Germany, Brussels, Italy, Austria, for example, as well as the US and Canada have been capturing new visitors with a selective cultural directive and focused programming. The city of Chicago itself, Mr. Karman notes, also plays the vital role as host and cultural hub while Expo Chicago continues to present a broader discourse providing new talent exposure to art dealers and artists alike. Art collectors worldwide are geared up for a fresh exploration of the 2019 Chicago Expo, which kicks off early in the art season with a bang!
Could you tell us about the history of EXPO Chicago? EXPO CHICAGO is built on a long tradition of Chicago hosting an international art fair. Back in 1980, when there were very few fairs in the world, the Chicago International Art Exposition opened at Navy Pier and ran until the early 1990’s. Soon after, Art Chicago was formed and ran at several
locations until 2011. I began my career in Chicago at the first exposition in 1982 and returned back to it years later. In 2012, that I felt strongly that we needed to re-launch a fair with a commitment to quality, not quantity of dealers; a strong focus on international programming to support our exhibitors and visiting collectors, curators, and patrons; a strategic move back into Festival Hall at Navy Pier and to establish our mission to deeply engage both the Chicago and regional arts communities. As we are about to celebrate our eighth edition, I am proud that the annual international artworld calendars are marked for Chicago and that we play an important role in the cultural ecosystem and fabric of our great city. What are your thoughts on the current art market, and where do you predict it will be in the next decade? Although internet sales seem to be increasing and art commerce sites are constantly being added, there is no replacement for the experiencing of an artist’s vision for their work than in a gallery setting. Presenting a show in a gallery (and ultimately in a museum) allows for a more complete conceptual statement and art fairs amplify this experience by allowing the work to be seen throughout the world. Art fairs are an important “convening” moment that fosters exposure, broader discourse,
direct sales and growing a collecting base and I think we need to be innovative to stay relevant in this cultural ecosystem. I am ever optimistic about the market and I do think that we (art fairs) are here to stay. As in the past, there will be some galleries and fairs that will close to be replaced by new and exciting models to support artists in the future. With the rise in art fairs annually, (reaching over 200 art fairs globally just in 2019), how does your art fair continue to maintain a highranking position with many top collectors, galleries and 40,000 visitors participating each year? As I mentioned earlier, we benefit greatly from a long tradition of Chicago hosting an international art exposition and most importantly from the unwavering support of our institutions, civic leaders, galleries and artists. Chicago is uniquely positioned geographically in the center of the Greater Midwest and America making it easy for U.S. and international collectors, curators and art patrons to attend. Most importantly the city is fully engaged in helping us welcome the world and Chicago’s great restaurants, institutions, hotels and attractions add greatly to the mix making

Additionally, we are extremely proud of the extraordinary list of leading international galleries that participate each year, our critically acclaimed programming on and offsite, the many exhibition alignments and gallery openings all of which have been strategically organized to coincide. Could you provide some local tips or favorite spots in visiting the art community of Chicago? You have to visit our major institutions like the world-renowned Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, but also not to be missed are the numerous other art museums like the DePaul Art Museum, Smart Museum, Renaissance Society, Block Museum at Northwestern University, Logan Center, DuSable Museum of African Culture, our numerous art galleries and artist-run space. How have you seen your art fair expand or grow since you began in the role of Director/ President of the EXPO CHGO Fair? 80 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com
Since launching the exposition in 2012, we have kept our word with the previously mentioned commitments – quality, not quantity of dealers; a strong focus on international programming to support our exhibitors and visiting collectors, curators and patrons; our move back to Navy Pier and to deeply engage both the Chicago and regional arts communities. Our expansion is not necessary in size, but in continued importance and relevance in support of our exhibitors, their artistic and their programs. Each year we have developed new programming like /Dialogues, IN/SITU, IN/SITU Outside, our Curatorial Forum and Exchange, our Profile section focusing on solo artist presentations, EXPOSURE for younger and emerging galleries and many initiatives that burnishes our reputation. I am confident that we will continue to expand, innovate and add new programming each year. With the rise in AI technologies and the internet, how do you see artfairs adapting to meet the needs of technology and the everchanging global market?
There is no question that new technologies are being utilized by artists to create new artworks and experiences and fairs will also have to integrate these new technologies to engage new patrons and to communicate and market our annual event. Web and social media are the current tools, but I anticipate broadening our marketing efforts and embracing new ways to utilize streaming services, video capture, virtual agents and others. You have given me an idea‌ stay tuned. Can you speak to how EXPO CHICAGO is adapting the new artworks coming to the market involving new technologies and new media? (i.e. display of these works, sections?) As we continue to shape our programming, I can see us developing new sections and installations that focus on this area and more thoughtfully integrating this new technology into both collecting consciousness if they are individual artworks and integrating other technologies to improve the exposition experience.
What is the future mission or vision for EXPO CHICAGO? Continue to innovate, adjust to the marketplace and ALWAYS focus on supporting our exhibitors, their artists and programs. As I have said repeatedly, the art world is built on the back of art dealers as they are taking the risks and making the investments on behalf of their artists. All of us working at EXPO CHICAGO understand this and that is why we focus our efforts on providing extraordinary service at the exposition and invest in marketing and outreach and focus our programming to both draw new audiences and develop new collectors. What inspires you? How has your personal taste for art changed over the years? Every year, both my wife and I see new work that inspires and informs our collecting tastes. We love to buy a work from EXPO CHICAGO each year as a mark of that edition and it is interesting to see how we have changed over the years from more conceptional and abstract to more figurative. Can you speak to the curatorial initiatives for EXPO CHICAGO and the role of the curator’s impact in the visitor experience? We made a conscious decision five years ago to present programs that directly bring international curators to Chicago to engage with our exhibitors and to foster future curatorial collaborations, facilitate peer-to-peer dialogue and have them experience Chicago’s contemporary artistic community each year. Our Curatorial Forum initiatives for mid-career and established curators is done in close partnership with Independent Curators International (ICI) and we are hosting over 45 international curators for this program this year. We have also expanded our Curatorial Exchange program to bring in over 15 curators from 7 countries and added the Red Bull Arts Global Curatorial Initiative supported by Red Bull Arts. In regard to your second question, there is no direct impact to the visitor experience other than having a large number of arts professionals as a critical part of the exposition environment. Can you tell us briefly about EXPO ART WEEK, and the collaborations that your art fair participates in with the Chicago community? I am very proud of our EXPO ART WEEK collaborations. We recognized early on that if we partner with, and amplify, all that is happening in Chicago during that one week in September than we have a greater chance to attract more patrons for EXPO CHICAGO and do our civic part to help market the extraordinary cultural community and offerings for both visitors and residents. Qiumiao Xu ARTIST’S BICYCLE SCULPTURES A BIG HIT IN CHINA BY MEGAN LAWLOR

elebrated Chinese artist Qiumiao Xu dabbles in sculpture, museum design, landscape design, film, and Chinese calligraphy. In her academic and professional career, she has participated in various commissions including the Shanghai EXPO Zhejiang Pavilion; Public Art Collections in Song Dynasty Street in Hangzhou; Hangzhou Subway Concept Planning and The FourthWest Lake International Sculpture Invitation Exhibition as one of the Curators, etc. She is not only devoted to traditional Chinese art but also fascinated with interactive and digital art that can help heal people. The research and practice of interactive art have been implemented throughout her works. Her first public art sculpture was called Rainbow, which was an arch sculpture made of six stainless steel abstract bicycles situated in front of the Carbon EXPO Pavilion of Hangzhou. The idea was to encourage people to use the low carbon transportation tool to protect

the earth’s environment. By means of rotating a bicycle pedal installed next to the sculpture, people can generate electricity to light up the sculpture and turn on music stored in the music box. The sculpture enhances the participation of the audience and brings life to the square. Qiumiao Xu also designed a museum for the most famous bicycle brand in China, SHANGHAI PHOENIX . One of the installations combines a virtual reality experience into a fictional bicycle riding tour. It allows people to experience virtual reality animation in a real riding environment. Riders stay at the same spot to experience VR animation along the tour. The system automatically responds to the riding speed in order to offer a real experience for the audience. Another piece of art is an interactive bicycle shape light installation, which can change the brightness of the light in response to the distance and density of surrounding people. This is achieved through proximity sensors and computing programs. Moreover, a phoenix sculpture and short films were also commissioned for the SHANGHAI PHOENIX bicycle museum. September 2019 | 85

Can you speak to us about your collaboration with Christie’s Sculpture Garden and Park Tower Group? Christie’s and Park Tower Group formed a partnership in 2009 to use the outdoor plaza and interior lobby of 535 Madison Avenue as a public exhibition space for artworks curated by Christie’s. I became aware of this relationship shortly after it started when I met Barrett White from Christie’s at a dinner party in New York. Our conversation that evening led to a visit from Barrett up to my studio in The Berkshires which resulted in us making a plan to exhibit my work at the Madison Avenue space. That show was in 2012 and now, seven years later, after continuing conversations with Barrett White, Head of Post-War and Contemporary Art Americas and Marian Klein,

president of Park Tower Group - I am looking forward to having another exhibition of my works at the space. This selling exhibition from Christie’s Private Sales Group will introduce my new Shatter Series sculptures to the public. With your studio practice and processes, can give us some insight on what takes place while making your large-scale Shatter Series sculptures? It is unusual these days for a sculptor to fabricate their own works (especially large scale). My practice is rather unique in that all of my work to date has been fabricated in my studio. This is especially significant in a series like my Shatter works which explore the duality between chaos and perfection. Chaotic movement - really can’t be planned or designed - it

must be realized in the moment of formation. For example, Shatter II has over 400 individually shaped stainless steel plates that curve and undulate but must somehow fit together like a giant three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle. How these pieces are formed to fit together can only be done one at a time to maintain the spontaneity of chaos.
Even though I come from a science and technology background most of my sculptural pieces are realized by handwork. My work is so much about the “heart” that goes into creating these pieces starting from a place of passion - with a process so dedicated to precision it can be characterized as an act of love. Each of my large scale Shatter pieces took 2,000 hours of labor to create.
Does your studio use any technology software or tools in your sculpting process to execute these works? Hand or Machine Made?
As an artist, how do you feel about the surge in new Artificial Intelligence programming and new ways museums such as the Metropolitan

Museum of Art and MIT are using it to advance curatorial processes and our human interaction with artwork? Having a background in software development (founder and CEO of a media technology software company with over 120 employees) I am especially open to learning about how new tools might help us see the world through a different lens. I’m sure that over the next decade - many of the things that we create, visualize and organize in our lives will be influenced by Artificial Intelligence.
As long as the technology is used as a tool and not a crutch for our own creative process - I have no doubt that it will lead to positive outcomes. What inspires you? When I was first starting out I read that the famous artist Chuck Close had said, “inspiration is for amateurs� and he was correct in my case as I was struggling for ideas of what to make and what to explore through my art. Over the years, I have been inspired by so many things - objects,
art, science, and people including the artists that have come before me. But - primarily it is the human condition and our relationship to the natural world that moves me. Now, after many years of working, I find that I have no shortage of inspiration - only a shortage of time! What advice would you give to a young artist today? The advice I would give to anyone in any field of endeavor is to be fully engaged and present. As
there are so many talented people making art it is important to realize that there is no competition with anyone but yourself. Perseverance and dedication are key as your work will always find an audience over time so keep making art and keep pushing for it to be seen by as many people as possible. Today there are numerous ways both through representation and independently to present your work and opportunities to sell. An artist can now create a model to accomplish this in a way that fits their specific needs.

I myself came to know the deeper story of Yelchin’s life with research conducted during an invitation to co-curate an exhibition of his photography in 2017. While looking deeper into this artist and actor, it was clear he made an enormous impact on those who cared for him during his lifetime. LA soon after his passing, where devoted fans could mourn and visit honoring his memory, while exhibitions were mounted with his personal photography in LA and NYC continuing to celebrate the memory of this cherished actor. Anton’s parents both noted professional Olympic figure skaters continue to champion his memory and seek to empower and support young people with the foundation. The foundation published a photography book titled “In Case of Fire” which sells on Amazon, with all proceeds going to the AYF. The noteworthy documentary released this
past summer focuses on the life, light, and love that Anton shined both privately and publicly. The family dedicated to carrying on his life work has worked vigorously to keep his presence alive for the public today. Almost three years since the unfortunate and shocking passing, this new film offers an intimate view into his rare talent and life featuring his never before released music and more. n a recent sojourn to Canada, in the province of Quebec, the city of Montreal felt like a welcoming friend with refined old-world elegance and new world charm. The rumors of this French infused city with festivals, the arts, music, culinary delights and living well‌ this city had been on my bucket list of places to visit for years!
My curiosity originally stemmed from the history and heritage of the city itself. I learned years ago that my family name has been in the area since the 17th Century. The website Ancestry.com revealed my family history of a relative who moved from Brittany, France to marry a young lady in
Montreal. We also discovered our name changed from Vincelett to Vancelette along the way. My family history is very close to Montreal in a small place called Boucherville! Enough with my fantasy of rediscovering family stories and bloodlines; let’s dig into this city old and new and see what one can discover! Venturing to Canada with an invitation to a TV production called The Social Movement, I was excited to be selected with 40 other Entrepreneurs
to tackle some challenging ideas and issues in the attempt “Change the world in 4 days.” The Amazon Prime production will be for another later article. I did feel fortunate for the new opportunity and I brought a bright-eyed, dreamy traveler who was ready to go tackle the world in 4 days! I admit I was extremely fortunate to have a local friend, curator Christopher Eamon. to call on for some great insider tips to the city! He is known for his major curatorial work with top contemporary artists and collectors’ circles in the
US and Canada (also for his wealth of knowledge for the rarified world of “video art”). Our friendship dates back longer than I can remember due to our common art industry ties. WORKSPACE: As many people who travel know co-work spaces can be a dime a dozen in many cities. It is always hard to know where to land when traveling or abroad as an entrepreneur to work, rest and meet. NIGHTLIFE: La Grande rue de Montreal, an amazing panorama and the largest observation wheel in Canada It worth a tour at night. Terasses Bonsecour, right next door, in the heart of the Old Port was a recommended bistro by locals and coach Ian Lajoie as a great place to gather. The open-air restaurant with a mix of music, outdoor seating and overflowing cocktails was the happening spot in the summer heat. Regrettably, with my lack of sleep in 4 days of changing the world attempts, my hope for a fresh day of wandering the city was my sole interest but not to be. I wanted to walk the Old Port at night. The beautiful circus tents of the location of the original Cirque du Soleil , the grand observation wheel and the silence of the city drew me in. Old Port reminded me that one of my relatives could have come off a boat in that very spot in 17thCentury, arriving to Montreal... a whole new world!

he greatest female tennis player in the world, Serena Williams, was holding court and serving tasty food in a cooking challenge with her also famous sister Venus at the annual “Taste of Tennis,” a Citi sponsored event at Cipriani’s on East 42nd street.
Metropolitan Minute took more than a minute to enjoy an evening filled with A-list athletes and top chefs. Our always courageous photographer Paul Prince got right up in the face of boxing legend Iron Mike Tyson who was all smiles as he bragged about his young daughter, Milan Tyson who at the age of nine, plays a fierce game of tennis and wants to become the next Serena. We kept running into Olympic Gold Medalist Bethanie Mattek-Sands who is also known by some as the “Lady Gaga” of the Tennis world with her Lucky in Love tennis clothing line. She rubbed elbows and tattoos with Exercise Insanity creator Shaun Thompson. Food Network’s Chopped, Chef Marc Murphy spilled the beans on his new book, “Season with Authority: Confident Home Cooking.” While Bravo’s Top Chef Richard Blais gave us the inside scoop on the cooking challenge between Serena and Venus Williams. No surprise to find former Real Housewives of New York star, Jill Zarin in the group. Everybody who watches the Bravo show knows Jill is a tennis fanatic. Zarin graced the Citiblue carpet with her new love Gary Brody and her cute pup Miss Bossi. It was a pleasure to see Ms. Zarin all smiles. A wide range of food was stationed all over from home-cooked creole dishes to Indian, Korean, and good old sliders.
