How to get from money to wealth. Yes, it takes financial expertise. Yes, it takes sound strategic thinking. Yes, it takes years of experience in all kinds of markets. But, even more, it takes an advisor who is always there for you anytime, day or night. Whose principals invest and manage their own money right alongside yours. And who make you feel like you’re their only client.

“No spring nor summer beauty hath such grace as I have seen in one autumnal face.” —John Donne No sooner were we raising glasses and toasting our beautiful August Cover Kimberly Guilfoyle, who is traversing across America to share her indomitable spirit and love of our country, were we on to the next adventure. Our Fall Fashion Issue with a Fashion/Entertainment Icon gracing the cover. You only need to mention her first name and heads turn quickly to catch a glimpse of the inspirational Supermodel and Media Mogul. Tyra. Tyra Banks has been on a first name basis with America for a while now. Host of the TV Megahit, “America’s Got Talent.” Creator of the equally popular “America’s Next Top Model,” and the face of countless brands and magazine issues. Tyra Banks is a tastemaker, business leader, educator and visionary. We are thrilled to share a new perspective on this remarkably talented woman who even makes time to share her knowledge with Stanford Business School students on everything from fashion to beauty to business and beyond. Fall Fashion Week is well upon us and this year our fashion team includes my multi-talented and brilliant daughters, Jillian (the Fashionista) and Jamie (the Real Estate star). Metropolitan Magazine reporters are all over NYC covering fashion shows that light-up the Manhattan nightscape like incandescent fireflies. Our great Metropolis is all aglitter with celebrity-lined runways and catwalks. NYFW is about creativity, talent, audacious statements of individuality and artistic freedom. New York City is still an important home to Fashion. Yet, all New Yorkers know that the week of 9/11 will always be a somewhat solemn one despite the joy of NYFW. We also know that America and New York City are always in a state of rebirth. It’s what we do. A city with universal citizens proudly displaying as many vibrant hues as the multi-colored trees painting our magnificent city. From Madison Avenue to SoHo to Central Park and all over. Autumn magic is in the air flitting about in reds, oranges and yellows. Enjoy the fashion and foliage. No better time than Fall in NYC! Cheers!

EDITOR’S NOTE
B
ack in the old days, all the way back in the 1990’s when I was a young CNN Writer/Producer with the best job in the world (except for this current gig!), I would accompany our Senior Entertainment Correspondent, the brilliantly funny Bill Tush on all sorts of celebrity-related adventures. One of the more mind-blowing annual assignments would be to attend both the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue event and the Victoria Secret’s Fashion Show. Every year over the course of a decade, Bill Tush and I would be on first name basis with the likes of Heidi Klum, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, Alessandra Ambrosia, Irina Shayk, and Kate Upton. I used to joke with Bill that after covering those two back- to-back events, surrounded by the most famous super models in the world, that one suffers “super-model withdrawal” for the remainder of the year until the next one. I’m sure Bill Tush’s witty rejoinder was probably something like, “Speak for yourself Bonehead... the champagne is already chilling back at my pad.” Little did I know that fate would throw Bill and I into an even more bizarre Super Model twist as the higher ups decided to create a new feature based CNN show with Bill Tush and Super Model Christie Brinkley as co-hosts called “Living in The 90’s.” The genius producer Nick Glasser, who had created CNN’s arguably most popular show of all time, Style with Elsa Klensch, had submitted the pilot and it got approved. Bill and Christie had nice chemistry on-air. While short-lived, “Living in The 90’s.” had some really well produced pieces and segments. Sr. Executive Producer Scott Leon, the best in the business, wouldn’t allow anything less. Somehow, I had developed a reputation as being a stickler in the edit room who was proficient in coaching talent to record their voice tracks perfectly. I guess practice makes perfect. This is how I got to somehow, miraculously I think, work closely with the classy and gorgeous Christie Brinkley in an edit room over the course of a cou ple months. As memory serves me, Christie was a total professional and could not have been nicer. Flash forward more than 20 years, and I’m so glad to be able to include the timeless beauty Christie Brinkley and her stunning daughter Sailor in our special Fall Fashion Issue with our amazing cover star Tyra Banks who has become good friends with my best friend and twin sister, Allison. Life is strange sometimes. And wonderful too. Enjoy all the amazing fashion images as much as we enjoyed putting this epic magazine together. A tip of the hat to our Creative Director Heidi North, who in my humble opinion has created a timeless Tyra Fall Fashion cover that not only acquits itself quite well against the other amazing 2018 fashion covers featuring Beyonce, Zendaya and Rhianna - but should also be talked about with some of the most memorable fashion covers of all time. You decide! Many thanks to all the Backers, Chase, Jaime and Jillian for making this Fall Fashion Issue possible. And of course, Tyra! (Wow!) Cheers! Adam Kluger Editor in Chief, Metropolitan/25A

for Cynthia Rowley What Inspires an Iconic Designer? —D.D. Rice
Photographed by William Eadon
The Ocean Your lifestyle and many of your designs involve the ocean. What does the ocean represent to you? I spend hours and hours in the ocean. It’s my happy place and my own form of meditation. I love to surf, wakeboard, and SUP board, which is what inspired us to make the wetsuits and swim collection. Please describe “surf leisure”. Do you imagine your customers like a novelist imagines her characters? I try to think of myself as a storyteller. Designing a collection creating all the photos and videos that go along with it is just another form of that...I guess by now I have a novel.
Fall Collection 2018 Favorite piece in the current collection? I love the plaid suit because you can wear the jacket with a t-shirt and jeans and the pants with a cozy sweater. The white lily of the valley dress is also a favorite - I love white in the Fall and it’s the perfect takeaway transition piece for vacation. And just for fun...the black and white geometric patterned sequin pants. How did your team celebrate the completion of the Fall collection? Bellissima! We love Christie Brinkley’s organic Prosecco. She’s such a strong and inspiring woman. She works so hard and we want to support her.
Tell us about a “backstage” moment where disaster struck. Was there a hero who helped save the day? It’s a team effort, so everyone’s a hero. We’ve worked together for a long time and we operate as a well-oiled machine. It’s never perfect, but that’s part of the excitement. Since it was the Chinese year of the dog and the theme of our collection was black and white we shot with black and white dogs. Don’t they always say never work with children or animals? Haha. It can be hard to get a great dane to follow direction… What surprised you about the Fall fashion season in general? There really was a collective moment where a lot of designers did black and white graphics and polka-dots. It’s kind of a surprise to have a trend like that take hold. The oversized lily of the valley against white and black backgrounds paired with high leather boots creates a fresh, updated look. Can you explain your process? We create all of our own prints and that’s how we begin the creative process. In the case of the lily of the valley print, I think it’s important to think of us as a global brand. We ship all over the world, so Fall doesn’t always mean wooly sweaters and big coats. We like pieces that can transition into all climates by pairing it with boots or a strappy sandal.

You included lots of dogs in stunningly complimentary ways. Who was your “dog of a lifetime”? I have a Frenchie named Ziggy...so no one compares!
Wear it Forward You’ve effectively and generously used your platform to help advance many worthy causes (rebel, rebel berets for Girl Scouts of America; T-shirts for Mom’s Demand Action; and bucket hats for Autism Tomorrow). Can you explain what “wear it forward” means to you? Every month we try to do a new charitable endeavor, it’s important to give back to the greater good. We’ve also been working with Just Water to support sustainable water sourcing. Every little bit helps. We do everything we can to bring awareness to causes we believe in. Generosity has been shared with us too. What goes around comes around.
Fellow artists, Dreams and Loved ones You recently collaborated with Goop on the Light Floral High Tide wetsuit. Did you and Gwyneth work together on the design itself or was Goop’s contribution more about the sustainability?
28 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com
I’ve worked with Goop and have loved Gwyneth for many years. I truly believe in their vision and wellness mission. This is the second wetsuit we’ve done with them and I love how it makes every woman look like a superhero and inspires them to try new things. Your husband, Bill Powers, is also in the art world. How does having two creatives in the same household elevate your individual pursuits? Art and fashion go hand in hand, just like Bill and I. Please describe one or two moments from your childhood that have enriched your designs? I made my first dress when I was 7 (hopefully that design doesn’t reflect my current work... Haha). I grew up in a small town where there wasn’t a lot to do, so my mom encouraged creativity and imagination, never letting my brothers and me have coloring books because the lines were already there. Those two things combined with a lot of love and encouragement started me on my path. If you could go anywhere in the world spontaneously and anonymously where would you venture and what would you do there? I’ve always wanted to be an astronaut, so the moon would be the ultimate adventure. But to bring it closer to Earth, I’ve always loved a far flung adventure and try to explore unconventional destinations with a thrilling element (scuba diving in arctic waters, camping in the Himalayas, riding camels in Egypt)...next stop, Senegal.
...my mom encouraged creativity and imagination, never letting my brothers and me have coloring books because the lines were already there.

T y ra WHAT TYRA THINKS ABOUT HER BUSY YEAR!
BANKS IT ON HER BUSY YEAR!
BY METROP OLITAN MAGAZINE
T
yra Banks is the Supermodel turned content creator, turned entrepreneur, and now educator of our time. And that’s not really covering all that she does. In her reign as one of the most visible and prolific talents, Tyra never stops challenging herself. Just this past year she has hosted America’s Got Talent, delivered her 24th cycle of the longest-running fashion reality show she created, America’s Next Top Model, wrote a best-selling book with her mom, Perfect is Boring, and completed her second year teaching at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. Tyra, two years ago you embarked on a new chapter in your career. You teach Project You: Building and Creating Your Personal Brand at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business (GSB). How did this come about? And have you always wanted to teach? In May 2016, I was invited to speak at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business about my career in modeling and media & business. When I
was finished, it was one of those gotta leave, head down, don’t talk to anyone situations, or else I would miss my flight! As I’m packing up, hurrying to exit the auditorium, I was approached by this energetic woman, with a big smile “Tyra, Tyra, do you have a moment to speak… I’m a lecturer here at Stanford…” This was my first encounter with Allison Kluger, Stanford lecturer and former television producer from New York. She said, “what you just did on stage… that was not a keynote… that was a class. Have you ever thought about teaching?” Intuitively, I knew there had always been elements of teaching on my talk show, The Tyra Show, and in mentoring my contestants on America’s Next Top Model, I’ve always wanted to teach, but thought I would save it for retirement. But this opportunity presented itself and Allison said something that really stuck in my head: “Tyra, you taught me more about personal branding in that hour than I have ever known. You are a born educator.” And the rest is history. Together Allison and I created “Project You.” Cover and Right: Photo by Matthew Jordan Smith

cover
There is always an element of “teaching” in your show, America’s Next Top Model, as you mentor young women to be top models. However, what surprised you the most about being an educator at a top graduate school? I was nervous… that first-day-of-schoolnervous, literally! At first, it was a bit intimidating to think I’d be teaching at THE Stanford University—the school with graduates like Phil Night of NIKE and Charles Schwab! But what surprised me the most was how open and willing they were to go out of their comfort zone to expose who they thought they were and who they wanted to be. Let me tell you, we were not easy on them! Allison and I introduced some unconventional and innovative elements to our class. I actually just finished teaching it for the second Spring session in May 2018 and the course continues to receive wonderful evaluations and reviews. I still receive updates from many of my former students who tell me how the tools we taught in the class have helped them extend their brand, allowed them to pitch themselves successfully, and have enabled them to understand what their superpowers are in terms of what they have to offer and leverage in the business world.
Kiefer Hickman
Tell us, what were your students like? Do you think some took the course just to meet you? There is so much diversity at Stanford. There was a mix of students who were brilliant, funny, vulnerable and socially aware. There were a few students who initially wanted to take this course just to meet me, or try something that sounded cool and different. But they ended up saying that this course was more valuable than any other course they had taken at the GSB. I was also surprised and encouraged by how open and curious they were about my areas of expertise related to the business world. In their final papers they turned in, it was so evident that they’d retained much more information from my curriculum than I could have ever anticipated. Stanford’s credo is Change Lives, Change Organizations, Change the World. And, after spending time with these students I have full confidence they are going to do just that. Toni Bird

cover
You teach with Allison Kluger, a lecturer at the GSB. What is it like teaching together and how do you both decide on the content and how to deliver it? Allison and I had as much fun teaching the course as we did making it. It worked out that we have very complimentary styles in how we work and teach. To prepare and create our course, she flew to LA a few times, I flew to Palo Alto a few times, and SKYPE came in very handy. Between the two of us, we have a lot of experience in the media and business world, yet we each have our own stories that are unique and relevant. Can you share one or two beliefs you have about the importance of Personal Branding? I have always believed that different is being better than better. Meaning, you need to figure out what makes you special, unique--that x-factor that makes you stand out from the pack. In my new book, Perfect is Boring, I talk about this a lot. Brands, products, shows and companies that excel and succeed are usually ones that tap into a new market or spark something fresh. Second, you need to know what you stand for and what you don’t stand for when creating your personal brand. Be bold, be firm, don’t waver. This creates integrity and credibility. What do you think makes your course unique or different from other courses offered at the GSB? From what I understand, Project You was the first course to stream live from Facebook before and after class with students’ feedback and thoughts. We wanted to make sure our students had ample opportunity to broadcast their personal brands across multiple media platforms, social media, and live television. We also covered all aspects of branding from their origin story, to visual branding, and how they spoke on camera. Gary Vaynerchuk, Social Media Guru, was our guest and helped each student figure out what was the best platform for them to promote their brand at present and in the future. Julie Cottineau, a branding expert, also helped our students to differentiate their brands even more. Finally, we had activities and assignments
throughout the course leading to the final project which was to pitch their personal brand in 90 seconds on live television as we critiqued them. Our goal was to make sure our students really had a sense of who they are, what they stand for, what their differentiating factor is, how their visual branding can support their message and how to feel confident approaching people with their vision. We packed a lot into the course. Project You made a lasting and indelible impact on students and has become one of the most indemand, oversubscribed and respected classes in the two years it was offered.
Tyra, personally, what has this experience of teaching meant to you? It’s been a humbling experience. I’ve always tried to use my career and life lessons to help teach aspiring models, those trying to break into the entertainment industry, and self-esteem to young girls – these are my passions. Being asked to teach in a classroom, at a top graduate school, as a formal educator in personal branding to our future business leaders, is one of the most fulfilling things I’ve done in my entire life, and I see teaching fulltime as an eventual career evolution. As this is THE Fashion Edition, we can’t let you go without asking you some tips on how you look as young and stunning as you did in your 20’s! Do you have any secrets you can share with our readers about wardrobe, fashion or beauty maintenance? My golden rule is always ALWAYS remove your makeup before going to sleep. It’s when we are asleep that our skin, hair, nails, go through a regeneration. So it’s really important that the skin is clear of any dirt and grime from the day. I’ll be honest though, I try as much as I can to follow my own rule… but sometimes Ty Ty is TYRED and my head hits the pillow without second guessing.

Chinese Streetwear Label Dakun x Liu Yong, Debuts at NYFW
D
akun x Liu Yong debuted at NYFW: The Shows with their “Eastern Legends” streetwear collection for women, men, and kids this evening at Spring Studios proving that Chinese designers are the trailblazers of street fashion. Traditional Eastern culture has influenced the fashion industry profoundly, and Liu Yong took this influence, particularly Taoism-- one of the most powerful cultures in Asia, into his atelier as the inspiration for this season’s Dakun x Liu Yong runway show. The Dakun name contains the symbolic meaning of Taoism, which represents the blended Chinese ancient culture with new street style trends – the mystery behind the “Eastern Legends” collection. Liu Yong’s inspiration came across with luxurious fabric coatings, knitted borders, and intricate edging on the garments. Street elements were apparent with the materials used and strategically placed graphics and logos. Male, female, and the cutest children’s looks came down the catwalk in edgy, futuristic reds, army green prints, and black. Accessories like sock slide on sneakers and architectural backpacks complemented Liu Yong’s anorak, hoody, and sweat pant pieces. The designer wanted to express throughout his show his concept of “Eastern Legends”. Dakun x Liu Yong aims to incorporate typical Chinese fashion with the younger generation. “Eastern Legends” combines history with the latest trends. Notable attendees included actress Francesca Curran of Orange is the New Black, Real Housewife of New Jersey Danielle Staub, and editors from the New York Times, NY Post, and CR Fashion Book.

AK: Spiro, the service and food at Nerai is really special. It feels like home. That is, if one lived in a really elegant home full of incredible food and exceptionally friendly wait-staff. Spiro: Thank you. AK: How is Kim Kardashian doing? Spiro: Terrific. They filmed here a couple months ago so we will probably be featured in the new show in September/October. We are going to be on it again. Almost every time she comes to New York she orders food from here. When she is here she is usually filming her show. She came in here the day before Valentine’s day with her assistant and she sat and ate and we chatted. Very nice. Very down to earth. AK: Kim’s favorite item from the menu? Spiro: She loves the Dover sole 68 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com
AK: Is that your most popular dish? Spiro: The Dover sole is excellent and very popular but our octopus is by far the most popular. AK: Your Dad has been involved for many years in the bagel business. What did you learn from your dad? Spiro: Hard work is the thing I learned most from my father. I’m not scared to put in hours which obviously in the restaurant business is something that is paramount. Sometimes you find yourself here at 8 in the morning and going home at 2 in the morning (laugh) which is not very sustainable on a long term basis but sometimes you just have to do it. Things pop up all the time. Sometimes you are short-staffed. Sometimes you got a leak somewhere. Sometimes it’s just crazy busy. That’s the restaurant business. But for sure hard work is something I learned from my dad and trusting your gut. AK: What types of decisions? The menu? Spiro: Sometimes when you re-do a space that requires a lot of money. You have to trust that you know what the customer wants. Sometimes you have to make decisions that are costly and hope they work out.
AK: What’s the secret to running a successful restaurant? Spiro: Getting all of your staff from the server that is serving the table to the dishwasher to believe in what you are doing. The cooks have to understand the philosophy and how important it is to put out good food on a consistent basis. I’m sure some restaurants focus a lot more on cost and if there is a questionable dish they might sell it instead of trash it. You always want to make sure you are selling top quality and consistent food following the recipes. That’s more kitchen stuff. In the front of the house you want to make sure your staff understands that there are a lot of restaurants in New York City and if they are open for more than 6 months they have good food. So finding good food in New York City is very easy to do. People come out for an experience. Especially when you have the level of dining that we have. AK: I was blown away that your wonderful lamb-chops were flown in from Australia. That seems like a risky financial move. Why go to that extreme? Spiro: We are not the only ones to use lamb chops from Australia. In fact, we just added a
great new product, baby lamb chops from New Zealand. They have less of that gamey flavor which people like. People like less of the gamey flavor. We just try to get the best product. AK: The recent Metropolitan magazine party at Nerai was just perfection from the ambiance to the food and the service. Just magical. What goes into that? Spiro: We like to create an experience. On every level, the restaurant has three different dining floors. The first floor has kind of a nautical theme. Makes you feel like you are heading on a boat and going somewhere far away. We have sails in the room and pillow on the banquets. The second floor is our garden. Has a 20 foot olive tree in the front and the room is very airy. Our wine cellar which is our private dining space has two areas. It has brown leather and more of a masculine feel. The benefit to having all those levels is that you are able to offer a different
experience at each floor. We hear from our guests who have been here so many times but have never visited the private dining room. Wow, this is amazing! AK: Talk about the menu Spiro: Our menu takes Greek recipes and some interesting Greek ingredients and Greek dishes and we play around with them. Even our Greek salad has a little bit of flair. Some are more traditional like the octopus. The ingredients speak for themselves. Our duck is a very modern play on moussaka. People love the duck dish. Our chef has worked at a couple Michelin star restaurants like Oceana as a sous chef and he was able to bring some of things he learned there. They have a lot of Greek influences on their menu as well. He was able to take what he learned and step up our lamb chop dish. Really great. He does a dolma which is traditionally done with grape leaf but
he does it with Swiss Chard. The Grape Leaf is a bit tougher at times and when people have the dolma which is made with Swiss Chard they are suprised at how soft it is. AK: How much do you love this? Spiro: I love creating something and then watching our guests enjoy it. We are really proud of the food we put out and we are sure to give you an experience that you are not going to find in other Greek restaurants. What we offer is very different. We incorporate French cooking techniques and Greek ingredients and tastes and flavors and it gives you a completely different spin to Greek food. So when you finish and have dinner you say “wow, that was a really good restaurant,” you don’t just say that was pretty good Greek food. Also we get a lot of compliments on our wine list. We have about 600 labels on our list right now from all over the world. October 2018 | 69

Sautéed Mushrooms combine cremini and portabella mushrooms with oysters. Lastly, fresh off the cob is pan roasted Sweet Corn. In Italy the meal is not over until something sweet balances the palate and the dessert or “dolce” in a traditional Italian meal is the highlight of every Sotto Sopra meal. The
whipped and creamy Tiramisu is the perfect ending to any Prix Fixe course. The expertly prepared Tartufo is a plated, dome-shaped ice cream dessert composed of frozen fruit or fruit syrup. The candied Chocolate Turtle is a handy option made with pecans and caramel dipped in chocolate. This Summer from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. the bar menu includes half-priced drinks for a very, very Happy Hour. The opening included a floor-to-ceiling renovation of the existing space, and a complete restoration of the original, famed Howard Chandler Christy murals that adorn its walls. The Leopard at des Artistes boasts a diverse menu that finds its roots in the area once known as The Kingdom of Two Sicilies of the mid-1800s, and the culinary traditions of Campania,

Game Day with Mark A. Carruthers PHOTOGRAPHY IN MOTION AT WESTPOINT
I
was born in New York and grew up in a different state of mind. Photography has always been a form of communication for me and may have been born due to a stuttering problem as a child. Although my speech improved over the years, the camera still remains! After working as a Photojournalist with Gannett News, today I find myself pursuing various photographic interests on a freelance basis. Sports, Life & Travel related subjects are still my favorites (some things don’t change...). When I’m not annoying my friends & family by taking an endless amount of pictures, I can be found skiing, rollerblading, golfing or simply reading. One of my highest athletic honors was winning the Bromley Mtn. Resort Backwards Race as a child. You try eating peanut butter, whistling and getting around the gates all while skiing downhill (trophy available upon request)! I make my bed in Rockland County, NY. markacarruthers.com/

Justin Love in his Woodstock, NY painting studio “Loveland”, wearing a self designed suit, surrounded by oil paintings from Thailand, Vietnam, Jamaica, Costa Rica, and Woodstock.
Justin Love, Artist & Explorer BY ADAM KLUGER
AK: Justin, it’s been a while since we first met in Woodstock. How did you get into art and exploring? JL: Well, I was from New York City and I moved to Woodstock, bought a big old church, converted it to a painting studio and music house and called it Loveland. After a few years I went to check out Costa Rica, I loved it, got a screen room studio on the beach of the Pacific Coast called Guanacaste ...I went there to paint over five years produced some of my greatest art in that tropical paradise of passionate feeling. Once coming back from the US ,I stopped in Jamaica and I just loved it too. The Jamaican people are just so lively, friendly, and in your face with jokes and fun. I started recording music and went to live in a castle on Negril’s West End. I painted and wrote music and recorded many collaborations there with a lot of Jamaican music stars and had my songs played daily on IRIE fm which is the biggest station there. David Rosenstein owner of Tingalayas resort, a very beautiful private resort and yoga center on the West End of Negril, bought many paintings to 82 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com
decorate his resort and he actually has collected more than 60 paintings of mine over the years, and is my biggest collector. After about seven years painting in Jamaica I thought to try Asia, so I went to Thailand to look around and to Vietnam shortly after that. I stayed about three months just touring around and came back to the US. I found I really missed Asia so I decided I would just go back and paint there. I set up a studio in my room at the Dream Hotel in Bangkok and soon they invited me to hang paintings in the lobby. After a while I was decorating both lobbies of the Dream Hotel and that went on for four years. It is a wonderfully cool decorated hotel with the most wonderful staff a hotel could have. They all became like my family .In the last year they gave me a studio space to paint right in the lobby. I also decorated the Ocean Hotel which was more of a lounge type space famous for its weekly pool parties and electronic music dance nights. They gave me a studio to paint in the lobby as well. Now I have a show at the Rembrandt hotel in Bangkok. I also love Bali , but
there is so much art there, and I did not feel the need to create anymore. I just enjoy looking at what’s there. Let me say that Bali is an incredible place, with the greatest friendly people, fantastic music, amazing dancers which I have painted, and temples every 10 feet that hold your interest. If you go there, be sure to spend a lot of time in Ubud. AK: Your series of paintings of Asian girls is also quite provocative and beautiful. JL: After I found myself painting in Thailand and Vietnam, it was no brainer to paint the women there. They were so exotic and beautiful. I just found myself driven to photograph them. After taking endless photos I thought, why not paint some of these women? So I found a friend of mine who is an exceptional photorealistic, although a very traditional painter and I took him on as my assistant. I start with taking photos, I put them into my computer, manipulate them every which way and compose scenes with the figures. Then I make a print which we use as the map to paint
“Pets” oil on canvas painting, 65 x45" , painted 2018
“Hot Ice”, oil on canvas painting, 60 x 45" painted 2018
a large scale oil painting on canvas. I think these are some of the most amazing things I’ve seen and the quality of the painting is phenomenal. They are totally contemporary and original and I am sure in the future this series will be well regarded as having really captured some of the beauty and style of the Asian girls from early 21stcentury. If You walked into a house with eight or 12 of these paintings spread around the house it would make quite some impression on a person. AK: Yet they are just one small aspect to your overall body of work. JL: I make paintings that make people feel
good. Excited to be alive and willing to push themselves to follow their dreams and live up to their highest potential. That’s what I’m aiming for when I make these pieces-and it comes through. We are here for a short time in this life. Let’s do the best we possibly can and appreciate the beauty we are given. As far as the investment qualities of my paintings I would say it’s obvious if you studied my collection of work. My paintings are recognizably mine from my the earliest periods throughout my career. I have done many periods of work in many original styles, mediums and countries and they all have a very strong and clear identity. What I find is that people like living
with my work and even those people that have paintings of mine for 20 or 30 years still enjoy looking at them. AK: That’s terrific Justin! Your work definitely resonates with a sense of joy and playful celebration of life. Thanks for sharing your journey! JL: Thank you! Hillary Clinton’s Hair AND OTHER INTERESTING TALES FROM MONICA FOSTER’S SILICON VALLEY SALON BY ADAM KLUGER
AK: Monica, how did you get your start in Hair? And what brought you to Palo Alto, the heart of Silicon Valley? MF: I always knew that I wanted to do something in the creative field. Originally, I planned to study architecture. Then my sister convinced me to go to cosmetology school. I took her advice and I ended up loving it! I was working as an apprentice in a salon in San Francisco in the late 90’s. During that time, they were in the process of opening a Palo Alto location, where I would end up working as a stylist once I completed my training. I didn’t know it at the time, but it would be the move that would eventually help me establish my career as a stylist in the Silicon Valley. AK: What sets you apart from other salons? MF: We have a tag line (though I think not too many people know it): It’s BEYOND HAIR. 8 years ago, when we were just opening the salon and this same question came up, I thought of this tag line and decided that it was very fitting because I really do feel that our relationship with our clients go beyond hair. I love that we’ve built a little community that consists of talented, creative, passionate stylists with a lot of integrity and our loyal clients that put
84 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com
a lot of trust in us and what we do. I grew up in a typical gigantic Filipino family, with 10 children. Growing up, everyone that came to our house was basically family, whether they really were or not. Being hospitable was something I was trained to be; it’s part of our culture. Our salon is family run, family oriented, and serve families from our close knit community. That’s pretty awesome! So to answer your question: What sets us apart from other salons? I truly believe that we have a genuine familial relationship with our clients. And if I’m not mistaken, I think many of them would feel the same. Oh, and we do rockin’ hair, too! AK: I know you have been requested to style the hair of some visiting stars and well-known people. Can you share a couple of names and anecdotes? MF: One of the perks of working in the Silicon Valley for as long as I have is you get to meet some pretty awesome people. Unfortunately, signing and NDA prohibits me from naming some of them, but let’s just say that they’re pretty impressive members of the Tech community. Being in a small town like Palo Alto, you are more likely to have more Silicon Valley “celebrities” than
the Hollywood types. On rare occasions, you might even get a few athletes or an unexpected Arabian royalty. One highlight of my career was getting to do Hillary Clinton’s hair during several of her visits to the Bay Area. And yes, surprisingly I wasn’t required to sign an NDA with her. True story: One of HRC’s good friends is also a client of mine, coincidentally. I was doing HRC’s hair one day and she asked if I knew (**names her friend), and I said yes. She then says, “I had dinner with her last night and we were talking about you. She said to say hello.” It was at that point that I knew my life was complete knowing that my name came up in a conversation HRC was having with her friend and then relays a message to me!! Total OMG moment. AK: What’s it like working at Fashion Week? And why do you always make time to go to Paris and NYC to work at them? MF: I LOVE doing runway styling. I like going to New York and Paris Fashion Week for the excitement, for the rush and for the experience. Working behind the chair as a stylist and a salon educator doesn’t give me a lot of opportunity to do super creative work. Working
at fashion shows allows me to have a slightly different creative outlet than what I get working in the salon. There are so many talented people working back there that one can’t help but get inspired. As far as experiences go, there’s nothing like working at Fashion Week. To see the creative process in putting on a fashion show and seeing what goes on back stage is mind blowing; seeing how many people it takes to put on a show is pretty amazing. To be able to see the amazing clothes up close, made by these talented designers is quite a remarkable experience. Definitely food for my creative soul. AK: Your “Hair Heart” is a signature picture you put on Instagram. Aside from being cute, it represents a lot to you. Tell us a bit about the philanthropic work you do? [donate haircuts, work with Cancer survivors, work with Project You and Graduate Students at the GSB]. MF: I have a soft spot when it comes to kids. One day I received a call from Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford and was asked if I can come and do a haircut on a little boy who’s been receiving treatment there and has been staying at the hospital for many months. He was
expected to start losing his hair from chemo and they thought it would be best to to shorten his hair before it all started to fall out. There are some situations where the kids have extended hospital stays and their moms and/or dads (and sometimes their siblings) are also there caring for them. Sometimes the haircuts are also offered to the family members, just to help lift their spirits. It’s really heartbreaking to see these sick kids patiently waiting to get better. Donating my services to these young patients and their parents is the least I can do. On my spare time (haha), I have served as Visual Branding advisor for Project You, a course in personal branding offered to Graduate Students at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, co-instructed by Allison Kluger and Tyra Banks. Super amazing experience, plus I get to meet some pretty amazing and intelligent students. I really learned a lot, myself. Finally, I have a project that is still under development called Hair for Humanity. Its purpose is essentially community building within the hairdresser community focusing on giving back to those in need by using our services, talents and creativity. Stay tuned...
THE TOP THREE MOST IMPORTANT TIPS 1. Know the importance of proper hydration for your hair. Sufficiently conditioning your tired and dreary locks is key. Now is the time for your hair to recover from all that summer sun exposure. Using good conditioners and treatments (Try Oribe Gold Lust Repair and Restore Conditioner, also shampoo) can really make a difference. 2. You can’t grow healthy hair without a healthy scalp. Once a week, cleanse and remove impurities from your scalp to increase circulation and blood flow. (Try Rene Furterer Complex 5) 3. Get regular trims to keep your style up to date and your ends healthy.

Emergency Fashion Tips BY ADAM KLUGER
Y
ou are at the diner, texting, swiping and scanning FB when your IPhone/Smartphone runs out of power. Aghhh! You forgot your cord to re-charge. How in the world is a person supposed to communicate with the outside world? Impossible to text, email, broadcast live. What now?!! 1. Don’t panic. You can get through this. Take a deep breath. The solution to this emergency social situation may be completely foreign and decidedly unpleasant but if you have sunglasses that you can wear, you might just get through this awful predicament. 2. With the sunglasses on, no one can see you. You are practically invisible to gently fall asleep

or flee to the safety of a cell phone store, which are all over the place. 3. Facing reality. This may be extremely uncomfortable but history has shown that people used to communicate with each other before smart phones. It’s true. I saw something to that effect on-line on Wikipedia. 4. Psych yourself up. You can do this! You may not want to but communicating with another living person face to face (i.e. conversing IRL) may be the only solution available. 5. Use your words. Besides eating and drinking, your mouth is actually very effective in providing a person in this type of “emergency situation” with a way out. It’s called talking, or chatting with another human being. Yes, of course, you
should keep your invisible glasses on. You used to talk with people all the time. Think back. Let’s try to use words to get out of this situation. As loud as you can, scream at the top of your lungs, “Check, please!!!” Pay your check and get out of the restaurant. Yes, if you need to look at your blank phone screen as you cross the street or walk down the sidewalk, do it! No one will know the difference. They are looking at their screens too. Even the drivers. You are safe. 6. Fortunately, there is now a new Fashion Emergency Accessory that provides an old school solution to this modern day conundrum. It’s called Chalkin’ Social. A hat with a tiny chalkboard on it with a handy stick of chalk. What will they think of next?!! chalkinsocial.com

Celebrity Fashion Designer Kenley Collins BY ADAM KLUGER
AK: Hey Kenley, How have you been? How are you enjoying motherhood? KC: I’ve been a tired mommy. Having a two and a half year old and a seven month old is never easy, but when they’re cute and not screaming and crawling all over me, it’s worth it. AK: How much do you enjoy dressing up your kids? Biggest challenges of being a mom? KC: My two year old daughter doesn’t let me dress her anymore, which I’m fine with. I like that she already has her own sense of style and whatever it takes to make my life easier, is good to me. Her thing right now is wearing two chokers, a necklace, and three bracelets every day. My biggest challenge is when both kids are crying and screaming at me for something and I’m exhausted. Sometimes I go in the other room, take a few deep breaths and walk back out and take care of one kid at a time. Oh! And earplugs! I admire anyone that has more than two small kids. They are so demanding and it’s so hard. AK: You are such a force of nature—what 88 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com
amazing new fashion items/lines have you dreamt up? Ariana Grande is a huge fan! KC: Thank you. I haven’t been thinking about another line for awhile. It’s hard going right back in after having a baby, but I have been inspired to change up my look based on motherhood and moving back to my roots of Ft Lauderdale. That’s where it starts. I’ve been wearing a lot of colorful easy throw on floral dresses and skirts. It looks like the next line will have to be Resort wear. I was lucky to be a part in creating Ariana’s image from the start and early on in her career. It makes me proud to see how far she’s come. AK: I’m a huge fan of your music. Our impromptu 3am Karaoke session in the Village with PR client PopCap Games (All our corporate clients !love! you) is a really fun memory-- I think “Street Boss” and “Here to Stay” and a bunch of your other songs could all be potential hit songs. How did you get into music? KC: Ha-ha! That night was way too much fun! Going out for karaoke always turns into the best
nights! When I’m not able to perform my music live, I always need a fix, and karaoke is a great way to fulfill that void. I started singing when I needed another creative outlet after deciding to take a break from design. So, I joined a punk band in 09 that did mostly covers and I didn’t like doing what the band always wanted to do, so I started writing my own music and started auditioning people for my own band. We had a good run, but it gets hard to keep a band together. Then I had an opportunity to make a solo record with an indie record label. When that happened, I found out I was pregnant with my first, so I wrote the album, Belle Black, which is my daughter’s name. The lyrics are the story that lead up to her. AK: Do fans still approach you about being a Project Runway All-Star? You are still one of the franchise’s most beloved stars. KC:I do still get approached. Most of the time they think I’m an old college acquaintance or say that I sound and look like the pinup girl from Project Runway. I just smile and keep it moving
me for always laughing out loud. I’m sure the producers did too. AK: You’ve been a courageous and outspoken critic of Harvey Weinstein. Are you surprised at how things ended up? KC: I was surprised because powerful men have been getting away with this type of behavior all the time. I used to dream about getting justice one day from the way him and his team treated me, but I don’t think that will ever happen. He will not own up monetarily, so instead, he files for bankruptcy. He did however, somewhat own up to being a sex offender, admitting to exchanging roles for sex and how he said people in the industry do it all the time. This is sadly, true. It, however, was not my experience with him. The disgusting abuse of power and the threats from him and his fraudulent production company was my experience. AK: What are your thoughts on the #metoo movement in general? KC: I like the origin of it and it was great for women of every profession to feel strength in knowing they were not alone. However, I’ve never used the hashtag or will say I am a metoo victim. I have too much respect for the real victims out there. A lot of the hypocrites in Hollywood that are part of the problem, use it for their own promotion or political agendas.
when that happens. However, if someone knows exactly who I am and are nice about it, I will fully engage. It’s nice to get a complement. AK: What are your fondest memories from the show? KC: Laughing, Laughing, and more Laughing. I don’t even remember at what exactly. It was mostly out of the ridiculousness that went on and the delirious, torturous state that I was at. It was my only hope of getting through it all. It is not an enjoyable process to say the least,
but being with the other designers that made comments under their breath kept me afloat. Actually one example was my best friend still to this day, Daniel Feld, standing next to me as we were getting a challenge presented to us by Brooke Shields and Tim Gunn and he said to me, “Guns and Shields, what are we? In a war?” And that may not be funny to some people, but the simple fact that we just did not care about anything they were saying, just finding any type of humor in what we were doing, helped. I lost it and no one even knew why, but Tim Gunn hated
AK: you have been one of the most beautiful, multi-talented and superentertaining TV personalities in the past 10 years...what’s next? KC: That’s sweet. Thank you! I pray for something good to come my way every day and when that day comes, I will be ready! Until then, I’m trying to be the best mom I can be to my babies. AK: If we ever do Karaoke again--what songs/artists would you want to cover? KC: I just did Aretha Franklin, Chain of Fools a few nights before she died and since then, she’s all I want to listen to and sing. That woman changed my life. October 2018 | 89

Lola & Leone THE NEW FRAGRANCE BY OLGA LITVINENKO BY ANN GRENIER
L
ola & Leone, a new fragrance by Olga Litvinenko, had its formal debut at a black-tie gala in Grand Central Station years after its inception in the South of France. Lola came across the fragrance as she was primping for the event and uncovered the secret that had been hiding in the bottle. She wore the perfume, and various attendees inquired about her essence throughout the evening. It was then that Lola decided to make it available to the rest of the world. The essence of Lola & Leone is fresh, clean and sophisticated. The hand-signed, limited edition 100ml 3.3 FL OZ. Eau De Parfum includes a refined combination of wood oils, rose, pear, orris, bergamot, star anise and gardenias. It leaves a positive and lasting impression while manifesting a ‘scentsation’ on those who wear it. The company is currently headquartered in Greenwich, CT and is looking forward to a continued global expansion through their website, www.lolaleone.com, and select retail locations. The name has both meaning and purpose: combining the name of a friend who tragically drowned when Lola was twenty-three years old with her own. It was when Lola met the death of Leone that she realized life’s purpose: to love thyself and to leave a legacy of creativity, passion, and sincerity while making a difference . . . one scent at a time. Lola & Leone will be donating a portion of profits to select charitable organizations. lolaleone.com.

T
he evening of July 16, 2018 saw an odd occurrence on ABC’s The Proposal. During the swimwear segment of the show, one of the contestants, a Queens native, raised a few eyebrows and plenty of cheers by rapping to the then-mystery man behind the curtain. That contestant was none other than Women of Achievement’s own Ms. New York, Aesha Waks. “The producers of the show just loved that I rapped, and pushed for me to do it on the show. I thought it would be fun, so I said sure, why not?” said Aesha. Just 8 months before this, Aesha was in Los Angeles aboard the Queen Mary as part of the Women of Achievement national pageant in which she was crowned the 2nd runner up. The pageant serves to recognize outstanding women and the organizations in which they serve their communities with. Aesha, who cured herself of anorexia, stood on a platform of fighting eating disorders. It’s a fight she’s been involved in for a long time now, even writing a

book titled The Model Body Plan, in which she separates “fact from fad,” and offers sensible weight loss solutions. The book is available on Barnes & Noble and Amazon. After being crowned aboard the Queen Mary, Aesha was approached to submit herself for a new show from The Bachelorette’s Mike Fleiss. She was told that the show would be similar to a competition with different categories such as swimwear, evening wear, and that she would be a great fit. Being no stranger to pageants, Aesha agreed and was subjected to 3 months of interviews. Aesha says, “They put us through a psych eval, drug test, STD test, you name it. Ultimately, though, it made us more feel comfortable, like we could just be ourselves after that.” After being accepted, she was flown back out to LA to the Warner Bros lot for rehearsal… an experience she can only describe as surreal. “It reminded me of when I was a kid, going to Disneyland. But it’s one thing to see these movie sets and another to be actually involved in one of those productions.”
This was certainly not her first time on TV or film, though. Over the years, Aesha has compiled an impressive acting resume, starring alongside names like Sam Rockwell, Paul Giamatti, Adrian Grenier, etc. She was almost Meadow Soprano… but that’s a story for another time. Her latest foray into acting is indie thriller Smoke Screen (2018), which has her playing contract killer Emma Pierce, a role type she has always wanted to play. She revealed, ”I grew up watching James Bond and looked up to the femme fatales and contract killers, and I love playing characters that are so diametrically opposed to how I really am. It’s also a rarity to come across such a well written, strong female character.” Smoke Screen was just released and is available on Amazon. Despite being eliminated in one of the final rounds of The Proposal, among a gaggle of blonds, Aesha remains a hopeless romantic and a believer in true love. She is currently an advanced personal trainer and sports nutritionist for the YMCA in NYC.

Hey Mom, I want to grow up to be a Supermodel! BY ADAM KLUGER
K
aty Thielke Straser is a successful Real Estate Agent in one of the most competitive markets out there: Silicon Valley! Her side hustle is being a “Mom-ager” to her 13 year old daughter, Anna Kathryn, as Anna successfully navigates the minefield of being a teen model. Anna will be walking in Fashion Week at NYFW, showing off the fashions of designer, Nancy Vuu, and her luxury brand. Metropolitan Magazine sits down with all three to discuss the dynamics of model, mom/manager and designer. AK: Katy, how did Anna get into the modeling business? KTS: Anna’s modeling career started after a serendipitous encounter at Bloomingdales in Palo Alto, CA. While shopping in the store a woman came up to us and asked if Anna had ever been “in pictures.” The woman ended up being a photographer for GAP Kids and asked if she could take pictures of Anna for an upcoming ad campaign. I thought it would be fun and took her up on her offer! That was the beginning of her portfolio and what propelled her into the modeling/entertainment industry! AK: Anna, how does modeling fit into your life? Is it a hobby, a vocation, or are you not sure yet? I know you also act and sing. ANNA: For me, modeling is more than just a job. Modeling is a passion of mine because I meet people I would not get the chance to meet in any other circumstance. Modeling teaches me time management skills because I have to balance my academic, social, and professional life. I also enjoy singing and acting, which is similar to modeling because it requires a thick skin, and a confident attitude. I am not sure yet about how I want to make modeling, acting, and singing play out in my life because I am young with so many opportunities at my fingertips. AK: Katy, what are the most important things a Mom needs to do to help her daughter (or son) get into modeling? And what are the inevitable obstacles that you both must face and overcome to become as successful as Anna is at this point? KTS: I learned networking and being quick to respond to opportunities have been critical to furthering Anna’s career. Keeping a current portfolio and utilizing different social media platforms have also been key to her success. Furthering Anna’s career has taken a lot of personal dedication. I have had to learn to balance my own work as a real estate agent, while also being Anna’s biggest supporter and manager. AK: Anna, how do you stay grounded in a world that judges you solely on your looks and how you wear clothes and make-up? What’s been the hardest parts about this journey? What are the best parts? KTS: In this modeling world, you have to pave your own path. Having my mom as my manager makes it easier because I have a great support team working behind me and boosting my self-confidence. Believing that
100 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com
I look fantastic and perform well helps me push towards my goals. Many times I need to find strength in myself and tell myself that I look good or am performing well. The hardest part is when I see someone that is doing better than me in the industry. I can get jealous, or doubt myself. But in the end, I have learned to be inspired by the people I believe to be better than me. I feel that it is a productive way to channel and embrace those few insecurities I may have. AK: Anna, what else do you want our readers to know about you? ANNA: I want your readers to know that not everything in the business is smooth and perfect. In reality it’s a process that takes hard work from many people. When the pictures are printed and
posted online they turn into beautiful creations that look perfect. But the real parts of this industry require all the people to make it happen. The magic is in the process and then finally everyone gets to see the outcome. The running, screaming and stress of it all really creates experiences I will never forget. Personally, I enjoy playing tennis with my friends, spending time with my family, and hanging out with my calico cat, “Daisy”. AK: Katy, what is you ultimate hope for Anna? I know her brother, Alex, is an actor who appeared on television in 13 Reasons Why, Season 2. Are you just a Mom who wants her kids to be in the limelight? KTS: Really haven’t thought about chasing the limelight with my children. I pursue fun
opportunities that give both my son (11) and daughter (13) more exposure, but do not make that the focus of their lives. My first and foremost job is being their mother and raising grounded, smart, value-driven, and respectful kids. Our family’s world does not revolve around modeling. Modeling is something fun that my children enjoy. The industry has helped boost their people skills, confidence, self-esteem and also given us a great amount of one-on-one and bonding time together which I/we love! AK: Anna, what is your ultimate hope for yourself? ANNA: My ultimate goal is to be a professional model and actress. After I attend college and study subjects that interest me and help me grow as an educated woman, I want to continue my October 2018 | 101

career and incorporate all the life lessons I’ve learned in how to be the best person I can be. I want people to know my name and recognize me on the street. AK: Nancy, congratulations of being featured at Fashion Week. Tell us a little bit about how you got here and what makes your fashion line different and special. NW: It’s been an amazing journey of 5 years since we launched our fashion brand, and by God’s grace & goodness, we are where we are today. I had a spiritual encounter, or epiphany some would say, 6 years ago that completely changed my life. I was at a faithbased conference packed with thousands of ladies. As I was intently listening to the message, suddenly everything blanked out and an audible voice came to me and gave me an assignment. I said “yes” and the rest is history. I’m happy to share my story in detail another time. We are a luxury couture brand that focuses on styling “family”. That being said, we are most known for our children, women’s and matching mommy & me couture. Not only does our elegant, bold designs and craftsmanship set us apart, but more than that, it is the experience that one has, when styled in Nancy Vuu. One undergoes a beautiful transformation that sings and echoes in their inner spirit that releases true beauty that can be seen and measured. 102 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com
AK: Nancy, how did you end up choosing Anna to wear your fashions, and what do you look for in a young model to represent your line? NW: It must have been fate. Katy and I are both real estate agents, and I happened to meet her on my last day at an office we both were working at, at the time, in the Peninsula (North of San Francisco). When I told her I was Nancy Vuu, she asked me if I happen to be in fashion and then told me she was a huge fan of our designs. She, of course, then showed me her daughter’s pictures which I instantly fell in love with. Katy and I have since become good friends and it’s such a joy to be able to work with her talented and stunning daughter, Anna. AK: Nancy, as a designer who has seen models come and go, what advice can you give Katy and Anna as they pursue this often turbulent career? NW: DREAM BIG and never give up. Here’s one of my favorite quotes: Fate whispers to the warrior, “You cannot withstand the storm.” The warrior whispers back, “I am the storm.” AK: Nancy, what’s your next step after Fashion Week? NW: Our next show for this season’s LA Fashion Week is set on October 13th. We are thrilled to showcase our newest Spring|Summer 2019 Collection which will be at an exclusive estate
mansion in Beverly Hills. The mansion was formerly owned by Mischa Barton and is now listed with the Altman Brothers on the Bravo TV show Million Dollar Listing. The beautiful part about our show is that we will also be raising awareness to support UNICEF’s End Trafficking Project. It’s very important to me that we continue to use our fashion platform to empower good. After LAFW, we will be heading to China in November in collaborations with the TianFu Bank of Chengdu to do a charity fashion show to raise funds for the children and villages in Tibet & Mongolia who are in great need and poverty. AK: Anna, as you continue to succeed and thrive in this field, what advice do you have for other young girls interested in getting into modeling? And what would you tell their mothers in terms of how to support their dreams? ANNA: To all the young girls out there I would just say, focus on being you. There are many other girls competing and trying to be ¨prettier¨ or ¨better,¨ you just gotta block out the haters! For the moms, you need to promote, encourage and support but also know what is right. After all, I am still only thirteen. Advocating for us is the best thing a mom could do besides managing and organizing our day to days. Because in the end, even though my Mom is my manager, she is also, and has to be, my biggest fan.

First Lady Melania Trump, Ivanka Trump, and Queen Noor of Jordan are all loyal clients AK: Nicole, You are a very well-respected and well-known make-up Artist, as well as an entrepreneur with your own line of skincare products. How did you get started? NB: I am a born-and-raised upper, East-side, Manhattanite. By age 14, I was already involved in acting and painting at the Rudolf Steiner Waldorf School in New York City. My passion for creative expression soon translated into the form of being a makeup artist. My mother, Rochelle, got me into makeup at an early age and taught me everything I needed to know to groom clients when she would bring me as her assistant on 104 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com
photo shoots. By 16, I traveled to Paris and met there with legendary, behind-the-scenes fashion photographer, Roxanne Lowit, who invited me and her daughter, Vanessa, to trail her work backstage at the Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Lacroix shows. Having had the honor on this trip to spend close amounts of time with Paloma Picasso and designer Christian Lacroix, my creativity and standard of excellence were inspired even further. Through Paloma’s regal manor and innate understanding of art and beauty, coupled with Christian’s visionary attention to detail and design, I was left with
a strong impression that would raise my standard of what an “Artist” was forever. After a 34 year career as a makeup artist in all areas of the business, I then went into my kitchen in the spring of of 2014 and began playing with my favorite anti-aging ingredients testing out how they would mix together. Eventually after 4 months of solitude and non-stop formulations and mad- scientist-type of beauty explorations (as my mom described it!), my classic 4 minute anti-aging treatment was born, and I cannot even imagine how I ever lived a day without it.

Melania Trump
AK: You have quite a long list of celebrity clientele. How did this happen and can you name some of them for us? NB: I would say that being in the business consistently for 34 years now is how it happened. I never left the business, I just stayed in it consistently and that’s because it’s what I love to do and how I enjoy spending my life. I love career, and success is a by-product of what I put into that career. It’s my passion and it’s exciting to me and it is what gets me up each morning. My client list include stunners such as: First Lady Melania Trump, Ivanka Trump,The Rockefeller Family, The Hilfiger Family, NASCAR’s France Family, Lionsgate Entertainment Feltheimer Family, Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene of Monaco, Naomi Watts, Brooke Shields and Queen Noor of Jordan to name a few. I am grateful to give to these extraordinary families my time and I take it seriously. It’s especially
exciting these days as they are all using and loving my hand-crafted skincare products. I do not begin any makeup now without having them perform my “4 minute anti-aging treatment plus perfecting serum” on their faces. It’s made a huge difference in how flawless the makeup application looks and holds up throughout the event. AK: How different is it working on public figures vs. everyday women? NB: Public figures have images to uphold that are photographed and placed in magazines and papers all around the world. If they don’t look flawless it’s a tarnished image that will follow them endlessly and that’s a huge amount of pressure. So as a makeup artist to public figures I work to create a look for them that compliments beautifully with their clothing and hair. It’s a delicate dance between the client’s vision, the
clothing stylist’s and the hairstylist’s. We must all work together to maintain excellence for our client’s image and follow through on their vision for themselves depending on where they need to be that day. These days, I do not work with everyday woman in my makeup career as the clients I do work with have intensive schedules that keep me pretty occupied. When I first began as a makeup artist and worked with brides or women who wanted business makeovers or lessons I would say the great difference between them and high profile clients is that mostly everyday woman just wanted to learn how to improve on what they already looked like, but also, just be the better version of themselves. It was less about creating an image and more about feeling the best they could be for everyday life. It’s great there are so many creative people out there to cater to all needs and requests. There is a place in the world of beauty for everyone. October 2018 | 105

AK: What is your philosophy about make-up? NB: My philosophy about makeup always begins with great skin. If your skin isn’t prepped and primed to perfection, no matter what makeup style you’re going for, it won’t look as flawless if the skin underneath isn’t absolutely at its best. That’s why I always insist my makeup subjects begin with my “Vitamin C, 4 Minute Antiaging Treatment” plus perfecting serum, then no matter what the occasion, makeup will always look better! For those that are ultra sensitive and have rosacea, I simply use my face lifting water alone as its calming to the surface of the skin, suitable for those that have rosacea and really tightens before moisturizer is applied. AK: What differentiates you from other make-up artists? NB: I would say, yes, certainly makeup technique and creative abilities play a big part as to why clients hire me initially. Of course it’s important to capture whatever look that is requested of you and maintain that creative consistency over time. But the reason clients have kept me on for years and years, and in some cases for 20 plus years, is an entirely different story. From my perspective what I do is equally 106 | MetMagNY.com | 25AMagazine.com
a balance of makeup technique, mixed with absolute loyalty and shared sympathetic value systems. That is a must for me too. I want to love what my clients represent and cheerlead for their life, so shared values is something that bonds us and integrity plays a huge role. The personal energy I give to my clients is wholesome and genuine--from the heart—and is perhaps energy that they need somehow and that’s why they keep me. How I have always seen it is that my role as a makeup artist is that of giving service, love and allegiance to my clients. They trust me in their homes and with their families and in the most intimate and private of life’s circumstances, and ultimately, with their public image. I do not take this lightly and I am honored by their trust. I enjoy clients who are family-oriented rather than just trendy. And in order for me to give all of myself to them like this, they, too, show a mutual respect and gratitude to me as an artist and for my care and hard work. This means the world to me and keeps the engine running, so to speak. These woman are truly larger than life and the life lessons I have learned from all of their extraordinary life experiences is nothing you can put a price tag on. My work with my clients is just a blessing and I am grateful to all of them each time I see them.
1. Perform your Nicole Bryl Vitamin C - 4 Minute Anti-aging Skincare treatment daily to prep and prime your skin to perfection before your favorite moisturizer or beauty products are applied. Protecting your skin like this is my #1 suggested skincare must do when maintaining a fresh and youthful appearance to ensure that your favorite beauty products are being fully absorbed and utilized. 2. Never go to sleep with makeup on. Sleeping with makeup on really cracks and dries out your poor skin. It also makes you break out and stops your eyelashes from rejuvenating over night which thins them down over time. SO, just make it a habit, even when you might not be wearing that much makeup to spend three minutes before bed (even if you are exhausted) taking off your eye makeup and washing your face! Your skin will thank you for it in the morning!!! 3. Gently wash your makeup brushes religiously once a week. Makeup brushes easily build up dirt residue due to the fact that your face creates moisture. Using the same makeup brushes day in and out, without washing them regularly, will add more oil build up on the skin which makes applying makeup less blended looking. Additionally because of the oil build up on the brushes, unwanted bacteria may occur leading to unwanted breakouts too.

Kimberly Guilfoyle Cover Party POWER SCENE FOR THE POWER COUPLE BY ADAM KLUGER
“H
ey, you must be the Spice Girls!” Of course they weren’t. But a silly joke is often a great ice breaker at large parties I’ve found. And the 400 plus guests at Omar’s restaurant at 100 East 63rd street weren’t messing around. I got to Omar’s early and looked at my IPhone next to the host station where elegantly attired waiters stood by as the PR, Security and restaurant staff were briefed on protocols and the agenda for the evening. Serious stuff. But so are armed guards and secret service outfitted with machine guns. These are the times we live in and oh yeah, members of the current U.S. President’s family were going to be arriving shortly to celebrate Metropolitan Magazine’s August cover girl Kimberly Guilfoyle. That meant that Donald Trump Jr. would also be with Kimberly, not only gallantly ushering her
past our colleagues at TMZ and the New York Post, but later regaling members of the party, how he’s learned that,” it’s not easy to follow a Kimberly Guilfoyle speech!” Once again, Don told anyone who cared, which was just about everyone, of course, just how much he respects and appreciates his new girlfriend. A nice moment shared by all in attendance. Of course the feeling was mutual as Kimberly took the microphone and then took her guests into her life as a mom and a patriot. Metropolitan Magazine Publisher Chase Backer organized the stylish shindig with PR maven Adam Weiss, that was rife with scores of media folk from election night mainstay Bill Hemmer of Fox News to his colleague, longtime legal eagle, Greta Van Susteren. Chase’s speech was off-the cuff but the message was clear. This magazine party was a major event. The place was packed, seriously so, with politicos and big wheels. Billionaires and movers and shakers. AJ Catsimitides, the daughter
of the Gristedes founder, couldn’t have been friendlier. So too was Curtis Ellis of America First who promised to speak with Ivanka (Trump, who else) about doing an interview and cover for Metropolitan. Hey, if you don’t ask... Oops. Big ruckus up front. Time to check on that. “Kimberly and Don are here,” Adam Weiss shared with me as a Jedi Master might whisper to his charge. Adam Weiss is cool and unflappable on the outside but when it’s game on, his eyes burn with intensity and his words make a lot of sense. I like this guy. I can see why he works with some really big names. Kimberly and Don had shown up with security in tow. The Power Couple worked the step and repeat with ease and the over-packed room like true professionals. They knew just who to hug and there was plenty of hugging going on. Even amongst the tight-knit members of the Metropolitan Magazine staff who have been working non-stop to diversify and enlarge the October 2018 | 109

magazine’s brand and to constantly “think bigger.” On this night, celebratory drinks were definitely in order. Along with delicious empanadas being circulated at just the right pace. Metropolitan Creative Director Heidi North, who designed the gorgeous Kimberly magazine cover from a (code named) “red dress” image, hand-picked by Chase, from Jill Lotenberg’s selects, even snagged a photo with “Donberly” to the amusement and delight of her terrific husband Rich. The staff was stoked that the new issue had gone viral online and had generated over 35,000 new impressions for August. Pretty cool! But just a good start we all agreed. “If you Google me you’ll see I have 500 Million Face Book fans,” offered a distinguished gentleman named Suhul Seth, who found my spiel about being the new Editor in Chief especially entertaining, after I explained

that the fancy title just meant I was now a glorified Maitre D for the night, responsible for introducing guests to each other and making sure trays of drinks were making their way to their rightful destinations. Armed with my own tray of five strong mixed drinks dressed with floating red peppers on top, I then glided through the well heeled crowd. I had returned, yet again, to kibbitz with the friendly Spice Girls. Who were, in fact, not actually pop stars but stone-cold rock stars. As it turned out, this cadre of highly intelligent young women decorating the corner booth had all been working for the Trump family for a couple years now. (Gulp!) A couple of the young ladies worked for oldest son Eric Trump and the others worked for Don Jr. They all appreciated the drinks and even seemed to appreciate (or at least politely put up with, my silliness.) As I turned around slowly, it was suddenly photo-
op time, as the statuesque, yet very down to earth, Tiffany Trump, in a white outfit and black headband entered the party. Her smile genuine, her demeanor graceful. Impressive in a word. Partygoers were also impressed by the volume and the make-up of this crowd. There were few lightweights in this group. I snagged a copy of the new issue and worked my way to the door. Said good- bye to some new friends who complimented the magazine and our party. Nice. Rather than head over to the Vanity Fair Party that was starting at 10pm, I had a better idea. Super-publicist Bruce Lynn, Features Reporter Melissa Clark and I did the thing New Yorkers do. We walked a couple blocks to a pizza place to grab slices and drinks and talk about the magnificently fun party we just attended.
