Founded by a floral designer, this beautifully curated space is a hotspot for the two things we obsess over in these pages: amazing design and the culture around living plants. Read Maria Grusauskas’ story on page 12 to get some insight into one of the most innovative and interesting maker spaces in Santa Cruz County. If you’re thinking of joining the many people who have joined the Tiny House movement—which is thriving in this area thanks to a number of factors, from environmental consciousness to the high cost of housing—then Richard Stockton’s story about how he converted an Airstream trailer into a happy little home might help you find your space. How Dig Gardens became Santa Cruz County’s hip gardening hub BY GEORGIA JOHNSON

ome for the ferns, stay for the cheese boards. Dig Gardens is a little slice of paradise that will have gardening geeks leaving their worries and wallet at the door. Whether they get lost in the outdoor succulent

paradise, or don’t even make it past the Paddywax scented candles and bath salts, Dig has something for everyone. Founded by Cara and Will Meyers in 2009, Dig Gardens opened at the beginning of the succulent craze and around the same time as the

recession. In the midst of water scarcity, Californians everywhere were fervently searching for drought tolerant plants and succulents that would neither sacrifice the beauty and diversity of their garden nor break the bank. Cara Meyers says that while it

wasn’t easy getting the shop off the ground at first, the local demand and support for succulents and houseplants has allowed Dig to bloom. The Meyers were no stranger to the gardening business, having met through their shared love of 8>

horticulture and having also co-founded Hidden Gardens in Aptos four years earlier. They wanted to start something unique in Santa Cruz, which Cara Meyers remembers as lacking a centralized spot specializing in low maintenance, drought tolerant plants and expert care advice. “Our vision when we opened Dig wasn’t just for us to be a traditional garden store, it was more to bring customers a garden experience,” Meyers says. “We wanted customers to learn to make things that they see in magazines, whether it’s succulent wreaths or garden walls.” Now, the 4,000-square-foot indoor space is home to an indoor urban jungle of every house plant imaginable, and just outside the sliding doors is a cactus and succulent oasis. Each week, Dig staff handpick their plants from all over the county and Bay Area to insure a diverse selection for customers. They focus on Australian and South African plants, as well as rare orchids—none of which are particularly easy to find. “The idea is that you will go to Dig and you know you will find the plant that you have never seen,” Meyers says. Aside from the lush eye-catching plants lining the store, there is outdoor furniture, pillows, jewelry, kitchenware and more candles than anyone can count. Meyers explains that gifts and home decor weren’t always part of the plan—the shop evolved into them. “I’ve always been a decorator and interior design lover, along with gardening,” says Meyers, “so putting both together has been a perfect relationship for business.” Meyers is the first to admit that gardening can be tedious and inaccessible for many people. She has three kids, 10 > and between soccer or

baseball games and working full time in the nursery, she says that she doesn’t always want to do more gardening and plant maintenance on the weekends. “People want beautiful things around them, but they don’t necessarily have time to care for them and maintain them,” Meyers says. “Everyone works really hard to live here in this area, and the last thing they want to do is come home and prune the roses.” With this in mind, Meyers

is looking to expand the Dig influence across the county. Though the idea is still in its preliminary stages, she says they are looking at opportunities in Aptos and Watsonville for another location. Meanwhile, her favorite trend right now is vertical gardening. “Vertical gardening has been mostly outside for a while, but I think growing more inside house plants is such a huge part of the nursery business right now. That’s something that we are going to see more and more of, for sure.”

Soquel’s Craftsmen Collective supports local woman artists and makers BY MARIA GRUSAUSKAS

nyone who has worked extensively as an artist or maker is probably familiar with long hours spent alone in a workspace with just a dream and maybe a pet or ficus plant for company. Whole days can pass without human contact, and if the mailman or a UPS driver happens by, the eye contact and exchange of words is like a glass of cool water after getting lost on a remote desert trail in July. Solitude can be a crucial ingredient for bringing a project to fruition, but it can also be an artist’s greatest challenge—a void where conditions are prime for loneliness and selfdoubt to take root. When Julie Martin of the floral design company Willi Wildflower outgrew her garage and signed a lease on a well-lit corner space

in Soquel Village, she knew she’d have to get creative to manage the overhead—especially with the seasonality of her business, which offers organic flower arrangements to order, as well as living arrangements and a specialty in container gardens, home styling and decor consulting. What she didn’t realize was that she’d create not only a storefront brimming with rustic boho chic, but also an antidote to artistic isolation. In less than a year, her Craftsmen Collective has blossomed into a platform for artists to connect, collaborate and create. There is workspace in the back for both Martin and Lauren Rhodes of the custom letterpress outfit Waldo Press (with room for one more resident artist), while the shop displays a rotation of art, jewelry and home decor crafted by 11 local female artisans.

“It wasn’t intentional, that’s just the way it happened to unfold,” says Martin of the all-woman lineup. “As the collective began to develop, I’ve found I really enjoyed sharing space and showcasing other female artists. I think it’s important for women in our community to be represented and have a workspace to gather, inspire and support one another.” The collection of quality crafted items Martin curates fits her impeccable design aesthetic—from ceramics and furniture to textiles, glassware, a smattering of vintage bags, and so much more. “One of the best aspects of this process has been discovering all the talent within our community,” she says.

And while the retail aspect of the collective is rewarding, Martin most loves to see what comes out of the regular workshops held there. “My dream would be to evolve into a collective workspace that hosts art and craft events, and have the shop become a showroom for our resident artists,” she says. But at the convergence of art and nature, the living, breathing wares remain a vibrant and top-selling attraction, and include an assortment of houseplants ranging from succulents and tilandias to ferns, fiddle figs, pothos and more. “We want our customers to have happy, healthy plants, so we always have some easyto-care-for, low-maintenance plants in stock,” she says. One of her current favor-

ites is the ficus elastica in the less-common blush and cream-variegated versions. “They are foolproof and fill out a space nicely while adding a subtle pop of color. Anytime we find something unusual or different, we snap them up, so check the shop regularly for unique varietals, like our recent dark-purple hanging lipstick plant.” The Craftsmen Collective has come a long way since its inception last May, and Martin couldn’t have done it alone. “When I first started, I just had flowers and plants,” says Martin. “I was hustling to try to get my doors open in time for Mother’s Day, and had placed some orders with artists, but nothing had arrived yet. My friend Kristina Costanzo came by and helped me with the buildout and just

started making things to help fill out the shop—furniture, jewelry, pillows.” When I stop in on a sunny Friday afternoon, Martin is sitting at the counter that separates the workspace from the treasure-filled storefront. Bits of moss and driftwood, soil and air plants, and a pallette of wet paints litter her workbench. Behind her, Rhodes sets the wheel of her antique wrought iron printing press into motion. “Life’s a Garden, Dig It” -Perrin Pacheco

We had found my client, an international recording artist, the perfect cabin up in the Soquel hills where he and his family could host small retreats, build a sound studio and plant organic gardens to the backdrop of the property’s panoramic ocean views—a true paradise, just 5 minutes out of town! Predictably, there was fierce competition for such a special property, and we felt fortunate indeed to be selected from multiple offers that included higher bids, with at least one other buyer who was willing to pay all cash. Happily the vision conveyed in our “love letter” prevailed with the seller, and it ended up being one of those special instances where they left money on the table to choose a sentimental favorite over simply taking the highest bid. Once the magic settled and we got into the due diligence phase, we made multiple visits to determine the condition and likely costs of what it would take to upgrade the cabin and its various systems, including water supply. In the process of locating a suitable location for a new well, we observed some ambiguity in the location of the property lines that gave some cause for concern, as the apparent boundaries we observed onsite didn’t match up with what we were seeing on the available maps and aerial photographs.

People are often surprised to discover how property lines can be misinterpreted on a rural setting. In fact, it is quite common for fences, water and septic systems, even entire structures to be accidentally built on a neighbor’s property. This can result in contentious encroachment issues, so I recommended that my clients retain the services of local surveyor Olin Edmundson to establish with certainty where the property lines are for the cabin’s 1.97-acre parcel. The cost wasn’t cheap, but the decision to get an expert opinion turned out to be well worthwhile as the results of the survey were indeed surprising: it turned out that where everyone had previously assumed the property lines to be were as much as 125 feet off at multiple boundary points, which impacted several key areas of the property and helped avoid the possibility of future plans creating an encroachment issue with neighboring parcels.

The Unexpected

Succulent How savoring their strangeness can alter your reality

ucculent. The name says a lot. But it doesn’t reveal everything about these wildly compelling botanicals that surrender to even the least-green thumb. Thick-skinned and juicy, these intriguing plants sit somewhere on the sliding botanical scale between dry, spiky cacti and delicate leaf-bearing flora. Succulents love to preserve moisture deep inside their curious, pliant bodies. Like many intimate regions of animal anatomy, succulents are indeed succulent, hiding luscious fluids within swollen appendages. They defy your expectations. Their entire design, which never fails to fascinate us humans, maximizes water retention while offering myriad strange angles and ridges to the sun. Some, such as the mighty aloe, can grow to tree-sized and sculptural proportions. Others, like the adorable baby toes, fenestraria, stay tiny their entire lives. But the best-known succulents offer diversity that no college admissions officer ever imagined. Offspring of the mighty crassula can range from the dotted heart-leaved cordata, to the fractal-esque, polyhedronic alpestris, native of South Africa. The echeveria offers visual geometry, composed of rosettes that start small and pop out from a central matriarch into a small riot of rose-sized forms. The flapjack kalanchoe is mesmerizing with its beautiful red-tinged paddles—dramatic and infinitely watchable. And that brings me to the heart of the matter. No living space is too small for a succulent—hence the stratospheric popularity of succulents, expanding faster than the national debt. But succulents

offer so much character, strangeness, and let’s face it, sheer otherness, that they demand to be singled out for dramatic placement in our daily lives. Once I discovered that I really could not kill a succulent, I began to look for ways to bring their alien presence into unexpected corners of my life. These are fantasy objects to be sure, but unlike your antique copper vase, or your amethyst geode, succulents are also living creatures. Succulents will change their shapes, slowly, eccentrically. They will suddenly bring forth side shoots, little clones of themselves. And when you least expect it, they will produce improbable and gorgeous flowers. In short, succulents are peculiar and performative allies in the adventure of everyday life. Make friends with a few eccentric succulents. Make a commitment to your favorites—naming them helps you to bond with them—and then place them in spots where they can show themselves off in their quiet, mysterious way. I find that deep-blue glazed pots help bring out their essential greenness. Anything that can hold a bit of soil and a succulent qualifies as a pot. But the best way to savor their bizarre appearance is to place them among collections of inanimate objects—a succulent makes visual drama when surrounded by glass objects, candlesticks, children’s toys, thickly woven textiles, pewter vases, marbles . . . you get the idea. A single trophy succulent can also form an important otherworldly talking point in the center of your dining table. It will offer transformation on a gradual and meditative basis every single day. Savor the surreal beauty of the succulent. Don’t think of them as merely idiot-proof oddities. GOING SMALL … IN STYLE My transition to a tiny house was abrupt. After I was put out on the street in Santa Cruz by out-of-town investors, I gutted my Airstream down to the walls and floor. I had to rebuild it from scratch to fit my life. This is not a restoration, this is a retrofit. Luckily, I won the Airstream lottery. My

Airstream is a smoothskinned beauty that was garaged most of its life. It has no flat surfaces except for the floor and windows, and even the front corner windows are curved. The original Airstream design was by Hawley Bowlus who had overseen the production of Charles Lindbergh’s plane, the Spirit of St. Louis. The Airstream is perfectly named, built for the least wind resistance. Its curved surface gives it the strength of an airplane and durability to weather any storm, even the

storm of time. To paraphrase General Douglas MacArthur, “Old Airstreams never die, they’re just out of sight.” If an apocalyptic tsunami ever hits Santa Cruz, ya’ll go ahead and run for the hills, I’m getting in my Airstream. (Psssst … I’ve got room for 12.)

team is that they go straight to solutions. We talked for hours about how I saw my future life in the Airstream. Cannabis was burned to open up our vision as we dreamed and schemed in the 21x8-foot spaceship. And Rhan and Rick are also sensitive to the part of me that can have an out-ofmoney experience. and ceiling, scraped the metal walls with knives, drilled out the holes that have raised edges, pounded the metal flat. For weeks, I filled over 1,000 tiny holes that had been punched into the aluminum walls and ceiling. When I finally got the walls smooth and primed white, the beautiful curves and contours of the inside skin came alive … and I saw the spaceship. The end goal was to find a place to park somewhere near Santa Cruz and live in the Airstream a few days a month with my wife Julie. So Rhan more than doubled the closet space, because Julie has

clothes. He doubled the size of the bathroom, because Julie has makeup. Rhan lined the closets with cedar, because Julie has incredible olfactory sensitivity. The floor of the nose was left open, because Julie has a yoga mat. And Rhan designed a couch that turns into a full-size bed, because Julie has me. They installed silver ash laminate flooring. Rick sprayed coat after coat of white boat paint onto the contoured bathroom sink and shower until they shone glossy white, and he accented the curves with blue mosaic tile and stainless steel studs. I got me a Pimpstream, yo.

ON A ROLL A note of caution, though: living in a retrofitted Airstream is like having a hot rod car. You have the coolest ride on the block, and also … you never stop working on it. I need to replace all the rubber gaskets around the windows and the door before the next rainy season. I need to get Dennis the Airstream Guru from Coastal RV to run new propane lines. I need to learn more about how the DC electrical system works. I need to find a place to park it where I can stay in it three days a month. Also, do not expect your kids to approve of your move into a

tiny house. My children think I’m crazy, and the Airstream is just further proof. Whoever it is that I am turning out to be is not what they had in mind. I’m trying to model the Silver Surfer, for whom freedom is everything—freedom from banks, freedom from scarcity fears, freedom from needing a six-figure income to live in Santa Cruz. And if it doesn’t work in Santa Cruz, then I will roll my aluminum sausage out of here. It’s hard to hit a moving target. And if you’re lucky enough to run into a space alien, thank your local Airstream owner.

Growing fruits and vegetables for fermentation taps into a long gardening tradition

ne Saturday, when the chill had not quite worn off the morning and it was still likely that rain might ruin the weekend, my boyfriend Mike and I started planning what to plant in our garden. He’s the one with all of the know-how and experience, so I just put in requests. We knew he would plant Early Girl and cherry tomatoes—the only kind he insists grow well where we live on the Westside of Santa Cruz—because, as he explained it to me when we first started dating, in the Italian immigrant

community that he grew up in “growing tomatoes is a badge of honor.” He learned how to grow them from his father, an Italian immigrant who came to Santa Cruz from Lucca in Tuscany in the 1950s. Mike had grown up watching his father and his friends guard their tomato secrets from each other and competitively mock each other’s methods. Occasionally, they might offer a begrudging compliment. Mike said it was all in good fun, but the year he planted sun-loving San Marzanos during a chilly Santa Cruz

summer was devastating. The tomato-related smack talk he had to endure from his father and his friends—in Italian, no less—was humiliating. Whatever he’s doing now seems to be working. Last year, in a moment of panic, I googled whether it’s possible to eat too many tomatoes (answer: not really). I told him I want to grow things that I can ferment. You see, while I’m anticipating all the fresh flavors that only summer can bring, I’m also looking forward to how delicious these garden beauties will be after being stuffed into a

jar or a crock for a few weeks. If you think that sounds crazy, you’re not alone. Home fermentation was once ubiquitous, but in the last 100 years, the process has become mysterious and mistrusted. It’s kind of ironic, because pre-refrigeration, fermentation was one of the only ways to keep perishable food safe to eat for long periods of time. It’s also very not scary once you get to know it, and it’s a handy skill to have in your back pocket when your garden starts to get out of control. The main reason I’m into it is because

I love the amazing flavors that can be coaxed from fruits and vegetables after letting them mingle with their microbes. Fresh vegetables vs. kraut or pickles, to me, is like grape juice vs. wine, or fresh cream vs. cheese—the latter is always better. (Of course, wine and cheese are also fermented!) So this year, in addition to the tomatoes, we’re going to plant pickling cucumbers and fresh dill for snappy pickles, and jalapeño and serrano peppers to ferment into hot sauce. The lemons from our perpetually fruiting

tree will be cut and preserved in salt and lemon juice. We’re also planting four Pinot Noir vines, and even if I never have a chance to make wine, I can ferment the tannin-rich leaves and use them in vegetable ferments or to make dolmas. Everything will hang out with the sauerkraut and kimchi I make using leftover vegetables from our Live Earth Farms CSA. Thanks to a little planning, I’m looking forward to enjoying the flavors of our garden for a whole year—not just one summer.
