MISSION HISTORY
San Juan Bautista artist Gayle Sleznick tackled the considerable job of restoring the saints and repainting many of the images from scratch.
Digitized saints San Juan Bautista’s Mission Saints are ready for the future BY WALLACE BAINE
I
PHOTOGRAPHS BY ROBERT ELIASON
t’s December, so you probably think you know where San Juan Bautista’s famed paintings of the Mission Saints are. They’re proudly hanging on the downtown lamp posts, like they have since Junipero Serra’s day, right?
DECEMBER 28, 2018
Not exactly. Sure, the downtown lamp posts are again decorated with the beloved antique images of Catholic saints as they are every holiday season—and, for the record, the tradition dates back only to the mid-1960s. But the actual paintings? They’re all in Gayle Sleznick’s garage, standing around like middle managers at an awkward corporate Christmas party. What you’re seeing on the lamp posts on Third Street in San Juan are, in fact, reproductions. Essentially, they are photographs of the
original signs, printed on vinyl. They represent a new era in a tradition that people all over Northern California associate with San Juan Bautista. For more than 50 years, the paintings were brought out for roughly six weeks each year, usually just after Thanksgiving. The rest of the year, they were stored or, more often, restored against the damages of weathering. Sleznick, a well-known San Juan watercolorist, has been on the job of maintaining the saints since 2001. But it wasn’t until last year when the original paintings came down for good and the vinyl facsimiles were put in their place. “A lot of people still don’t realize that those aren’t the actual paintings,” she said in her brightly lit home studio surrounded by her own paintings. There are 44 original paintings— two for each of 21 saints, plus a pair for Father Junipero Serra. ➝ 4

Because the images have been digitized and stored on a computer, the original paintings are no longer in service and are, in fact, in a kind of limbo. Sleznick said that about half of the paintings need restoration work from peeling paint, cracking or other wear and tear. What was once a yearly ritual will now be one last go-’round before the paintings begin a new chapter, whether that’s in long-term storage or on display in some other venue. The saints are the responsibility of San Juan Rotary Club, which took on the oversight for the paintings when the original steward, the San Juan Bautista Chamber of Commerce, dissolved in 2010. “I said I was going to do this until I turned 80,” said Sleznick, “and I’m approaching 80 as we speak.” The slim, 4-foot-tall panels familiar to visitors and residents alike are actually the second series of the holiday saints. The first series was developed by artist Faye Dixon back in 1964, and the images were like figurative cut-outs. After
a couple of decades, those paintings became badly weathered, and in 1983, another local artist Ursula Hanes Guthrie created an entirely new set of paintings, a set of two representing each mission in California, plus a pair for Serra. (An interesting piece of trivia: Each pair of saints—to go on opposite sides of the same lamp post—are identical, except for the one of San Juan Bautista, which is actually a reversed mirror image). The designs were inspired by the folk art style of Southern California painter/priest Michael Buckley, a mix between the traditional “icon” style often used in religious art and the entrancing “big eyes” look of Margaret Keane. The images were painted on uniform plywood planks in pairs but, said Sleznick, they were not always stored properly, and 15 years after the Guthrie paintings debuted, they began showing signs of deterioration. That’s when the paintings came into the orbit of Sleznick, an artist who has lived in San Juan with her husband Jim since ’93. Sleznick partnered with fellow ➝ 6

artist Norm Scott to tackle the considerable job of restoring the saints, which meant finding the exact paints that were originally used and repainting many of the images from scratch. The situation was so dire one holiday season that the saints did not make an appearance on Third Street. The Chamber initiated a sponsorship program from local businesses to pay Sleznick and Scott for their work. Several years later, Scott died and Sleznick carried on the restoration work by herself. “We would work six to nine months on it,” she said, “a lot of times all day and into the night.” Then, in 2016 came the decision to digitize the images and create the vinyl reproductions. The work was done by the Signs By Van near Salinas, and suddenly Sleznick was not on the restoration rollercoaster every year. The new durable vinyl signage will not fade or chip due to bad weather, and if it is damaged or vandalized, it can easily be replaced with another vinyl print. Sleznick said the new vinyl technology can also potentially dictate how the saints will be presented. Because the signs don’t have to be taken down for restoration, they could
conceivably stay on the lamp posts longer than usual, going up earlier than Thanksgiving and coming down later than mid-January. Sleznick’s work has been seen in a wide variety of venues around the world, most notably at the White House. In 2007, her ornament depicting scenes from Pinnacles National Monument (now Pinnacles National Park) was chosen to be hung on the White House Christmas tree. From her years restoring the paintings of the Mission Saints, Sleznick has developed an attachment to them. “I’ve really fallen in love with these guys,” she said, sorting through the 4-foot panels in her garage. She points to San Carlos, in his crimson robe. “This is the guy I’ve kinda adopted. He’s just so Italian.” To those who love them, the saints each carry a unique identity. Sleznick sees the imperfections, the color mix challenges, the off-center eyes. She is frustrated that one of the male saints looks too feminine. But generally, she is pleased that the vinyls have given the saints a new lease on life. Suddenly, anything is possible. “You could leave them up all year long now.”

t’s no surprise that cab is king, especially in cooler weather, when sitting by the fire takes on a romantic air. Want to give yourself or a cab lover in your life a set of special local cabernets this holiday season? Here are a few to ponder. Aver Family’s 2014 Heritage Cabernet is named for John and Carolyn’s fathers, and does them proud with pretty cassis, cherry and vanilla, wound around lithe tannins. Calerrain’s 2016 cabernet from Church Creek vineyard exhibits a nice weight and well-integrated tannins, with just a hint of that Santa Clara earthiness. The red fruits are a surprising touch. Emmalily’s 2015 Madeline Cabernet is abundantly oak-enveloped, and will please the lover of sweet
wood. After resting in barrel for 30 months, this chocolate-laden wine deserves big air and a big glass. Matt Oetinger’s personality infuses Fernwood Cellars 2014 Cabernet. It oozes leather, cedar and tack, like a fine cabernet should. Big-boned yet graceful, it’s a handsome, powerful steed. There’s no doubt winemaker Jason Goelz has a way with wine. Sniff the 2014 Jason Stephens Cabernet and you’ll find sandalwood, leather, cedar and pine. Sip, and you’ll love the dark cherry, balsam incense and beautifully framed tannins. Classy and classic. The 2016 JD Hurley Cabernet that Dan Martin crafts from the Santa Cruz Mountains aims at the sweet spot, with cherry and vanilla dominating, featuring a price just under $30. A crowd pleaser, for sure.
