ommemorating fallen soldiers on Memorial Day this year will be a little different due to the Covid-19 outbreak. Gilroy’s Memorial Day Parade, which annually draws hundreds along 10th Street to honor fallen soldiers, has been canceled for 2020 due to virus concerns, the Gilroy Community Organization announced April 3. The Family Fun Day and Car Show at Christmas Hill Park, which follows the parade, has also been canceled. In Hollister, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9242 and American Legion Post 69 will still visit the graves of those who died in war, but in a smaller ceremony. Memorial Day is a federal holiday to remember, honor and mourn all the military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day observance began after the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Over the course of the country’s more than 240-year history, roughly 1.3 million Americans have died as casualties of war. While the community may not be able to gather in honor of the dead, they can still show their appreciation in a number of other ways. Albert Lambert, chair of the Gilroy Memorial Day Committee, shared a number of ways the community can commemorate Memorial Day.

Show of patriotism
2
Throughout May, the public is encouraged to fly an American flag at their home or place of business.
Paying respect People are encouraged to visit the grave site of a veteran family member and leave a small American flag.
Keeping tabs Check in on a veteran neighbor to see how they are doing. Make sure you stand at least six feet apart to follow social distancing protocols.
Rock stars A new cultural phenomenon has reached South Valley and San Benito County during the shelter-in-place order. Locals are painting rocks and placing them in areas for other people to find and share on social media. For Memorial Day, paint a rock with a patriotic theme and place it somewhere around town.
Going green The public is encouraged to turn a light green, whether it’s on the porch, inside the home or at the office, then take a picture and share it on social media with the hashtag #greenlightavet. It’s part of the national Greenlight a Vet movement, which shows support for veterans.
Tune in live On Memorial Day, May 25, at 3pm, the Gilroy Veterans Hall and Gilroy Memorial Day Parade Facebook pages will present a live performance of Taps by Tom Brozene and Jimmy Brozene as part of the annual National Moment of Remembrance.

Share a poppy to spread awareness poppies that covered the graves of soldiers who lost their lives in Belgium and France. Since the ALA's founding a century ago, the organization has memorialized the bloodred flower by conducting poppy distribution days to collect donations in meeting the needs of U.S. veterans, servicemembers and their families. This year, the poppy takes on heightened significance. At a time when many Americans are unable to gather for Memorial Day ceremonies and events, a visible symbol of solidarity with veterans can inspire support and serve as a reminder of the important roles our servicemembers play in keeping us safe every day. This year, since ALA members and volunteers can't distribute poppies in person, here's how everyone can observe National Poppy Day: • Share a poppy on your social media pages to spread awareness. You can go to the American Legion Auxiliary National Headquarters Facebook page (@ALAforVeterans) to find the appropriate
graphics, or search for National Poppy Day in Facebook frames. • The ALA will host a virtual National Poppy Day event via Facebook on May 22 at 9am. • For Memorial Day, The American Legion is hosting a virtual service starting May 22 via their Facebook and Twitter pages. • If you'd like to be more involved, you can always make a donation to your local American Legion Family. During these uncertain times, we are all focused on keeping our families healthy and safe. While it may be difficult to celebrate and honor our veterans and military families the ways we did in the past, the poppy reminds us to support these heroes who have devoted their lives to protecting Americans every day. For information on how you can volunteer, join or donate to the American Legion Auxiliary, visit www.ALAforVeterans.org. —Brandpoint Content

ith Covid-19 changing the way we interact, gather and celebrate, many holidays will look different this year, including Memorial Day. But that doesn't mean servicemembers, veterans and their families need our support any less. In fact, many members of the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) are doing their part to protect and honor veterans during the pandemic. This Memorial Day, large services and gatherings will not be possible, but the true meaning of this day lives on through the contributions of veterans and military and in the way we support these heroes throughout the year. In 2017, the U.S. Congress designated the Friday before Memorial Day as National Poppy Day to honor those who have fought for our freedoms. The poppy is recognized around the world as a memorial flower to honor servicemembers who have died in conflict since World War I, when the poem "In Flanders Fields" was written by Lt. Col. John McCrae in 1915. The poem refers to

GARDENING
Making space in landscapes
FUNCTIONAL LANDSCAPING Creating space in a landscape can also increase the use of yards.
Remove plants that offer no benefit

ost gardeners and home owners work hard to fill spaces in landscapes with ornamentals, edibles and flowers, but emptiness has its place in a landscape, too. Filling your garden or landscape with plants is what makes it lovely and productive. Shade, privacy, flowers, fruits and vegetables, and herbs are all good reasons to maintain plants in and around your home. But too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. Plants crammed too closely together create habitat for pests and disease. Caterpillars may devour far more than their share of your tomatoes and other delicious
crops, if they are hidden from view. Plants installed too closely together also shade the ground, keeping it moist for slugs, snails, earwigs and sowbugs. Protected by a thick leaf cover, aphid infestations may go unnoticed until they are completely out of control. With those aphids, often comes many plant diseases, such as mosaic and other viral infections. Reduced sun exposure and airflow, combined with aphids, can set the stage for any number of plant diseases. Many common fungal diseases, including anthracnose, crown rot and peach leaf curl, can quickly take over a landscape if there isn’t enough exposure to air and sunlight. Spacing plants properly allows
each one to reach its potential. Rather than battling neighbors for water, nutrients and sunlight, they can put all their energy into growing and staying healthy. Healthy plants are less susceptible to many pests and diseases. They also tend to provide the showiest flowers, the sweetest fruits and the biggest vegetables. Creating space in your landscape can also be used to increase the use of your yard. An inviting pathway, with arching over pole beans or climbing roses, creates an invitation to come explore. Who is your yard for, anyway? You, or the plants? As you walk through your yard, look at each plant with an eye for usefulness and beauty. If it provides neither, it is a good candidate for removal. All too often, we keep doing what we keep doing simply because we’ve always done it, not because it provides us with any benefit. Get rid of the invasive plants, the plants that always seem to be sick or infested with one pest or another, and the plants that never really look good. There is no sense in watering, weeding, pruning and spraying plants that give you nothing in return. By removing plants that serve no purpose in your landscape, you will reduce your workload. Getting rid of plants that are not thriving and beautiful or useful increases airflow and sun exposure to the remaining plants, giving them access to more soil nutrients and irrigation water. You will also make your yard appear larger and create a view that isn’t filled with troublesome plants that provide neither function or beauty. Sometimes less really is more.
