February is a month to savour the last of the long, hot (and sporadically torrentially rainy) days of summer, and – if you haven’t already start shifting out of holiday mode.

And as we settle into a more business-asusual approach to life this month, I can’t help but notice topics of health and wellbeing coming to the fore.

In my conversations with colleagues, family and friends of late, there seems to be a renewed vigour for fitness, experimenting with more plant-based meals and trying out meditation and mindfulness techniques.

This of course could be for obvious, pandemic-related reasons – whether that’s a newfound appreciation for the benefits of good health or making the most of lockdownless freedoms (touch wood).

I am sure it has absolutely nothing to do with the fact I am now safely into my 30s, where I can confirm it is much harder to mask the consequences of overindulgence and under-exercise.

Whatever your reasons for paying attention to your health in 2021, this issue of Metropol hosts an insightful interview with Kiwi actress, and now author, Claire Chitham on page 26, where she shares helpful advice for looking after your health.

There is a healthy dose of other great reads, too, including Lorde’s journey to Antarctica, and interviews with the formidable Palmer sisters, Eve and Grace, on their hilarious new series, Good Grief, and Christchurch-based circus performer Emma Phillips.

remember stepping off the plane and it was just the most incredible weather – blue sky and this dazzling sun,” she says in an interview with Antarctica New Zealand following the trip.

“I felt like we were in space. It’s such an alien environment.”

The 24-year-old multi– Grammy Award winner spent a week in the icy environs in 2019, and has produced a now sold-out book, Going South, and a feature for Metro and Rolling Stone about the experience, which raises awareness for the environmental impacts of global warming on the crucial ecosystem.

She spent her time at Scott Base; visiting scientists in the field and, learning more about Antarctica’s role in the global earth system.

“Going to Antarctica and seeing this really raw and powerful place and source of potential environment change was really helpful to me to see,” she says.

“If this continent melted in its entirety we’d see a

60-metre sea-level rise – that is really shocking and is something we need to pay attention to.

“You’re able to see the potential for great change - positive or negative based on how we respond.

It’s hard to see a tangible consequence to how we consume and what we put out into the world.”

The proceeds from the sale of Going South will fund Antarctic science scholarships, and the experience will remain the star’s biggest rock’n’roll moment.

She remembers one particular moment where she tracked whales with scientists in a helicopter.

“I had this moment - it was 10 O’clock at night and I was resting against the helicopter and looking out at the shelf.

“I had this very distinct moment of thinking this is as cool as your life will ever get. This is it. This is the rock and roll moment that you thought would be in New York or LA – this is that moment. “

The ďŹ rst foot juggler to come out of New Zealand, Emma Phillips is an expert in twirling, whirling, and tossing umbrellas, carpets and even tables using nothing but her toes, arches and heels.

A pandemic-induced return to New Zealand saw her settle in Christchurch, where she recently starred in the Bread and Circus Backyard Buskers Festival.

Metropol catches up with the talented performer.

ables are Emma Phillips’ speciality. She juggles them with her feet, deftly kicking and spinning the large dining necessity in the air, while also tossing and whirling umbrellas in her hands.

Emma is the first known circus performer to come out of New Zealand specialising in foot juggling, and has gone on to blaze a trail in the esoteric art.

She is one of the only known Western artists to perform Chinese-style foot juggling in the world, and the first to combine umbrella and table juggling simultaneously.

A career which began, despite her Whangarei upbringing, in Christchurch. The now 30-yearold was introduced to the world of foot juggling while studying a Diploma in Circus Arts at Christchurch Polytech in 2008.

Inspired to take her foot juggling training to the next level, she then applied and was accepted to the Beijing Acrobatic Arts School and Wuqiao Acrobatic School in China.

“My real training didn’t really begin until I got to China,” she says. “And then I realised how hard it was!”

She was taught the traditional art of foot juggling “by China’s finest”. And while it remains her speciality, she is also trained in and regularly performs contortion and aerial hoop, too.

Emma started performing while studying, but it was after graduation that her CV really picks up. She has performed throughout China, Australia, Europe, Russia and the UAE, and most recently accepted a contract for the German and Austrian tours of Roncalli Circus Theatre.

Unfortunately, the contract

which she says was “the biggest of my career” was thwarted by Covid-19.

On the night of the press premiere, the show was postponed for five weeks.

“I definitely considered staying in Germany,” she says.

But the opportunity to see her family in Christchurch won out.

And the five weeks turned into the remainder of 2020 and, now, into 2021.

“I’m so glad I came home, spending the year with my family and my sister’s kids has been an absolute highlight,” she says.

A highlight the recent crowds at Bread and Circus Backyard Busker’s Festival can attest to, when Emma took her glamorous, vaudeville-styled performance to the streets.

“The New Regent Street Spectacular was amazing,” she says.

“It was such immersive street theatre with the opera singers and the musicians, and I was juggling a table in the middle of everyone!”

She also loved performing with the Topp Twins at the Isaac Theatre Royal gala, “which has always been one of my dream theatres to work in.”

Emma says her favourite part of the whole festival “was the community side of it” as she felt incredibly fortunate to be in one of the only performing festivals in the world.

For all the impacts of Covid-19, the fallout for the performing arts sector has been particularly harsh. So for 2021, Emma says she is trying to spin the lack of strict performance schedule to further refine her craft.

“One thing I would like to do is have a little bit more fun with performance to just play and explore that creativity.”

Making a comedy series about death is a bold move, but if anyone could pull it off it is Canterbury sisters Eve and Grace Palmer. The talented sisters talk to Metropol about having fun - and making television - at a funeral home.

The comedy comes from how we as humans get caught up in the silly little things. The things we become upset about or create drama over, in the context of life and death, seem trivial, but we all do it.

nheriting a funeral home may not sound like a conventional comedy plot. But that is the premise of Good Grief, the hilarious TVNZ series co-written, produced by and starring the sisters.

Daughters of TV producers Janine Morrell-Gunn and Tony Palmer, Eve, 31 and Grace, 25, are Kiwi entertainment royalty.

Grace is known for her roles on Shortland Street and The Dead Lands while Eve has made a name for herself as a presenter and reporter on TV and radio, most recently on The Adam and Eve Show.

Good Grief follows Ellie (Eve) and Gwen (Grace) Goode, who have just inherited their koro’s funeral home.

Where sensible Ellie is determined to uphold his legacy, pink-haired Gwen is set on moving to Bali to pursue a DJing career.

“I know it might seem like we have a morbid fascination with death and dead people,” says Grace. “But it’s more about talking about something that’s taboo. Despite [death] being inevitable for everyone, it’s a discussion nobody wants to have.

“I find it interesting more people don’t want to discuss death even though it’s coming for all of us.”

Eve says the “awkward and cringe” humour of Good Grief is not in death or grieving, but the perspective those events bring.

“The comedy comes from how we as humans get caught up in the silly little things,” she says.

“The things we become upset about or create drama over, in the context of life and death, seem trivial, but we all do it.

“We all go to a funeral and think, ‘I need to change the way I live my life,’ then go back to worrying about who needs to empty the dishwasher.”

She says the sisters came up with the idea a long time ago, after a death in the family brought its own share of laughable moments amid grief. But work started seriously on the project in 2018 when they joined forces with fellow Cantabrian and screenwriter Nick Schaedel, and the formidable Kerry Warkia and Kiel McNaughton from production company, Brown Sugar Apple Grunt. The series received NZ on

Air funding in 2019.

“We were really lucky to have it picked up on the first go,” says Grace. “We worked on it for a long time before it was ready to be considered. There was a lot of mahi.”

And once it was greenlit, there was strong interest from the industry.

“I couldn’t believe the people who were auditioning for the show and who we got on board,” says Eve. “I was really blown away by the team we managed to get – which is all thanks to Kerry and Kiel.”

The cast includes funnyman Josh Thompson (The New Legends Of Monkey), Sophie Hambleton (Westside), and Vinnie Bennett (The Bad Seed).

Eve says the sisters also worked with a lovely long-time funeral director, Gary, to ensure they were hitting the mark.

“We thought, ‘Are we pushing the boat out too far, is it too unrealistic?’, and then Gary shared some stories which made us think, ‘We haven’t gone far enough!’

Truth is stranger than fiction sometimes.”

Despite their vast experience on set, taking a step behind the camera was a learning curve.

“One thing I learnt very quickly was how being an actor, you’re just the cherry on top,” says Grace.

“You’re a very small cog in a very big machine and I think we have a newfound appreciation for all the work that goes on behind the scenes.”

Filming can be the quickest part, she says. There was the writing and pre-production and then months of post-production.

However, it was early exposure – growing up at television studios – that set both sisters on their career paths.

“It was sort of inevitable,” says Grace. “I can’t remember ever wanting to do anything else. We grew up watching What Now in the studio and just loved it. I loved the energy and the people and everyone coming together to make two hours of TV.” Off screen, the sisters have had big years in their personal lives, too. Auckland-based Grace, married fellow actor, Rawiri Jobe (Step Dave, Shortland Street), and Christchurch-based Eve is expecting her first child with beau (and former co-star), Adam Percival. Eve is chronicling her pregnancy journey on her podcast, The Hapu Club.

HEART BREAK(FAST) According to both health experts and cuisine connoisseurs, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. What better way to start Valentine’s Day off than by treating the love in your life to a glorious berry breakfast spread? A frothy smoothie, fresh fruit salad or buckwheat waffles topped with berries straight from the punnet makes for a romantic start to the day.

QUIRKY COCKTAIL

DELUXE DESSERT

Toast the day and the season with a fruity twist on your favourite beverage – or try something new. Simply add a fresh berry to garnish your prosecco; muddle some berries with crushed ice, vodka and soda, or, go all out with mixed-berry mojitos and frozen margaritas. For non-alcoholic options, add fresh fruit with mint and cucumber to iced water.

Dessert is a sure way to win any heart, so why not sweeten up your V Day with a luxe post-dinner treat.

Grilled Bluff Oysters When grilling oysters, you need to pick a species that is robust enough to stand up to the heat. The firmness of Bluff oysters makes them perfect for popping onto a barbecue with a spoonful of dressing or compound butter. This recipe comes from the early pop-up days of Hiakai.

MAKES 12 30 MINUTES

50g thick-cut pancetta, cut into matchsticks 1 large shallot, peeled and finely diced 1 clove garlic, peeled and finely diced 1T piri piri paste Freshly squeezed juice and zest of 1 lime Flaky sea salt 12 Bluff oysters, shucked and kept in the half shell

Method

S

et a small sauté pan over medium heat. Add the pancetta and allow to cook until the fat renders out, stirring to ensure it caramelises evenly. Add the shallots, garlic and piri piri paste to the pan. Cook until the shallots have softened and started to turn golden brown. Add the lime juice and zest, then remove from the heat.

Season with a little flaky sea salt and keep warm until needed.

When you’re ready to serve, bring a charcoal grill or barbecue up to a high heat. Put the oysters on the grill in their shells and cook for one minute, until the residual oyster juices in the shell start to bubble.

Spoon one teaspoon of the piri piri dressing onto each oyster and cook for another 30 seconds. When the dressing starts to bubble, remove from the heat and serve immediately.

Creating new dishes from last night’s (or the night before’s) leftovers is nothing new. But creating whole new products from the remnants of meals past?

Welcome to the world of edible upcycling.

F

ood upcycling - where new edible products are created from leftovers, by-products and surplus food waste - is tipped to become big this year as conscious consumers and food makers alike look for delicious solutions to reducing food waste.

In New Zealand, it’s estimated about a third of our food goes to waste. So it’s little surprise foodie heavyweights like Kiwi chefs Nadia Lim and Ben Bayly are fans of the practice.

Food upcyclism takes foods which have imperfections – such as unusually shaped or minorly damaged produce, or items close

to its sell-by date – and create whole new edible delights.

Upcycled products can include beer brewed from leftover bread - and leftover grain from beer brewing made into bread; damaged or funny looking fruit and veges can be transformed into nutrient-dense powders and sauces, and meat trimmings can become pet food.

Kiwis can keep an eye out for local brands like Citizen Collective beer and bread, Deja dog food, and Upcycled Grain Project’s range of upcycled crackers. Let the guilt-free snacking begin!

Insights and Accidents 2020 finished with a bang for me or should I say, a knock! On New Year’s Eve, I was unceremoniously and rather dramatically hit by a car and knocked off my mountain bike. The shock, the bruises and the reversal in my tenuous cycling confidence, whilst not critical or bonebreaking, has given me the chance to dust off my thinking as we move into 2021.

2021 feels like a beautiful chance for all of us to rethink different aspects of our lives, for me at least. Professionally, it’s already feeling like a full year. I expect the market to continue in its current state, with strong buyer demand, some stand-out – if not exceptional – prices, and land to be highly sought-after by entry-level investors (most of the developers are actively hunting).

It’s also easy to imagine some respite for buyers with regard to choice, as the new year summer-flush run of property enters the marketplace.

For investors, there are a number of dynamics.

‘Boomers’ (sorry for the label!) are not offloading investment portfolio properties like they might once have done. Reasons for this include the fact that returns are higher than for bank deposits and the belief returns will only improve with increasing tenant demand. There are also more and more people contemplating property investment and I’m not going to comment on the proposed reinstatement of LVR restrictions, but I will comment on this.

These are unusual times, they are adverse to anything any of us might have seen before, and the optimism that conditions have produced is contagious.

2021 is expected to deliver us out of the uncertainty of 2020, but one border slip-up could see us all changing places and once again our world could be upended.

That’s why it’s important to not only work

diligently but look at yourself honestly: is what I’m doing what I want to be doing?

And am I doing it to the best of my ability?

I’m a ‘yes’ and a ‘yes’, but we’re all only an outbreak or in my own case, a potential accident, away from not getting the chance to really consider our year, our lives and our potential. I’d like to embrace qualities of courage, perseverance, empathy, kindness and – a tough one – patience, and I wish you all luck with your own journey, personal or professional, in 2021.

As with millennial pink, this newer colour is not one specific colour but can be many. Think salmon, wafer, biscuit, nude and pale coral. In combination, these colours are like a pale, glorious sunset.

The surge of smoky pink and peach into our current culture

has opened the door for androgynous and adult pinks of so many shades. It’s gentle, compassionate, composed, free-spirited, nurturing and youthful.

It can be used as an accent colour or as a neutral depending on which version of the colour you choose – the muddier versions work well as neutrals. It’s not sickly sweet, but can be sophisticated, glamorous and edgy.

In this room, using two muted peachy pinks together means the space doesn’t become overpowering. The lighter colour, Resene Sorbet, is used as a neutral, leaving the darker colour, Resene Just Dance, as a feature wall to frame the white linen sofa.

A modern barn-style build with a village lifestyle was the dream for a Scotsman and his Kiwi family. By enlisting DJ Hewitt Builders to do it once and do it right, their complete wishlist was granted.

Immaculately built to look authentically imperfect, the board and batten exterior plays with different widths, under a sizeable single-pitch roof. Designer Darren O’Neil’s concept of a 310sqm barn on the 726sqm Tai Tapu section perfectly soaks in views and sunlight.

The grand roof space created a full-height second story, where one lucky son is in his element in the 86sqm studio/bedroom and ensuite, which would someday make a perfect space for a home business.

Choosing open entrances, the master bedroom’s walk-through ‘robe lies behind a duck-egg blue floating wall. Similarly, the kitchen opens to the scullery with display shelves, and adjoining laundry, which can be closed off. Down the hallway, you are guided to the

powder room by the illumination of the back-lit mirror, which leads to the bathroom and separate toilet.

Detailed inlays on draws and cupboards in the kitchen and living area adds a classic vibe to neutral tones, including the sunny window-seat nook. The base provides extra storage, as does other clever cavity spaces throughout the house.

An ode to the bonnie isles, is the whisky lounge. A dark navy feature wall, and board and batten backdrop for the gas fire, sets the scene for a wee dram or two.

The clients were glad they engaged interior consultant Tara Hewitt for her keen eye for additional details and stylish suggestions in every room of the home.

Of note, was Daryl Hewitt’s weekly critical path explaining how the project was tracking, as was peace of mind during lockdown with extra security on the site which was always left immaculate.

Prep & preserve February is time to reap all fruits (and vegetables) of your garden labour, which also means it’s prime time to preserve those excess edibles – and then prepare that empty soil for the cooler months ahead. Metropol has compiled some tips and tricks to help you get the most out of your February garden.

PICK OF THE BUNCHES Pick fruit daily to encourage late fruiting, and boost berries with targeted feed for an autumn growth spurt. While harvesting, try to gather up rotten and damaged fruit from the ground and tree as well. Be careful not to compost any diseased or infested leaves and fruit.

PLANTING THE SEED Keep planting late summer crops of new lettuce, spinach, kale and herbs like parsley and basil. Broccoli, rhubarb, carrots, beetroot and cabbage are also ready to plant – as well as spicy chilis (if you dare). It’s also a great time to plant your citrus for zesty summers to come.

SHELF PRESERVATION

Once fruit trees have stopped fruiting, prune to shape and remove dead or diseased branches. Think ahead for your winter veges, and not let weeds take residence in the spaces left from harvested edibles. Instead, plant salad or winter greens, or bee magnets like calendula and marigolds.

Don’t let any excess fruit and veges go to waste - fill your pantry with preserved apricots, black boy peaches, omega plums, yellow plums, granny smith apples, figs, tomatoes, zucchini and berries. Or, start making chutneys, jams and sauces.

FLORAL FANCIES Pick roses, hydrangeas, carnations, delphiniums, lilies, sweet peas, gypsophila, agapanthus, sunflowers and geraniums. Plant fuchsia, petunias, impatiens, dahlias, marigolds, nemesia and wallflower.

Health at the forefront

A growing number of Kiwis are eyeing up Ōtautahi Christchurch as a tempting place to live. Twenty per cent of those recently surveyed said they were open to relocating to Christchurch within the next five years.

Like many of you, I am sure, I have spent time over the Christmas break reflecting on the tumultuous events of 2020 and constantly reminding myself just how fortunate we are in New Zealand to be able to live relatively normal lives compared to so many others around the world.

T

his is a great indicator of the vibrancy and profile of our city. We regularly gauge the perceptions of people outside of the city, including their willingness to travel or move to Christchurch.

Perceptions are important.

How people view our city, what they know, what they don’t know and how they speak about it influences our economic growth.

Waitaha Canterbury requires an additional 70,000 workers over the next 15 years to fill vacancies created by an aging population. We’re competing not just nationally, but globally, to attract a strong workforce.

If we want to maintain and grow our market share of the national economy, we need to

work hard to attract people to the city and to understand what drives behaviours and perceptions.

Some of the most important factors are the cost of living, housing affordability, housing quality and ease of getting around – all areas in which Christchurch outperformed both Auckland and Wellington.

These results are hugely positive for the city, but there is always more work to do. We know people want to see more employment opportunities available in the city. So attracting businesses, supporting innovation and creating more high-value decent jobs will continue to be a priority for us in 2021 and beyond.

I

t is very clear we are not out of the woods yet. Many in the health sector still consider further community outbreaks of Covid-19 as inevitable (not if, but when) and that underpins the need for all of us to remain disciplined and vigilant.

There is a sense that we are over the worst and that we can ease off a little.

However, that would be a big mistake, and one we cannot afford to make.

The health sector has performed remarkably well throughout the crisis and will be at the forefront of our minds as we roll

out vaccinations in the coming year.

None of us should forget that health activities contribute to approximately 10 percent of New Zealand GDP and the one in 10 people employed in New Zealand are working in healthrelated areas. It is very clear that all activities related to heath are vital to each of us.

We need to fully appreciate that here in Canterbury where so much good is being done in the sector, there is much opportunity to do better.

Rebuilding our city

Time to start-up

This month we will take a moment to remember all that Christchurch lost on February 22 a decade ago.

We have around 530,000 small businesses in New Zealand. This represents 97 percent of all commercial ventures, 28 percent of employment, and 25 percent of GDP - proving that the Kiwi entrepreneurial mindset is alive and well.

I

t’s also a natural point to consider how far we have come in that time.

Responsibility for the delivery of the Crownled anchor projects was handed to Ōtākaro Limited in 2016. While a significant amount of demolition and planning work had been done by that time, a lot of land sat bare.

By February 2017, though, the Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial was opened. Construction began on the first homes in One Central a few months later and the adjoining Rauora Park opened later that year. We’ve enjoyed the River Promenade for three summers now and Te Pae Christchurch

Convention Centre and the South Frame are nearing completion.

No one will tell you the process has been perfect.

Tricky ground, a strained construction sector and now a pandemic have all played a part. But the scale of what has been achieved is noteworthy.

We are on the cusp of something special with the Avon River Precinct finishing around April, Te Pae on track to open later this year and the Metro Sports Facility around a year later.

Christchurch will then be home to some of the finest facilities and public places you’ll find anywhere in the country.

PERFECTING AIR QUALITY

W

hy then do we have so few start-up versus small business founders?

What’s the difference between a small business and a start-up? Start-ups are only temporarily small and usually based around innovation with global scale.

The intention from the beginning is to ‘Go Big’. But, while there are 530,000 Kiwi small businesses, there are only around 500 high growth start-ups.

Why? Is it more challenging to grow a start-up than a small business? Not necessarily.

Plenty of small business owners work 14-hour days, carry immense amounts of stress, and are equally ambitious.

I believe, for the most part,

the reason we have so few start-up versus small business founders is in the vision. This is not a criticism, but, in the long term, high growth startups will create our future economy and drive national job growth.

In the US, almost every new job created since 1977 was created by a start-up. Now, more than ever, New Zealand needs more start-up founders to alleviate our reliance on primary industry exports and invent our future worldleading industries.

New year; new opportunity

A decade to remember

Ngā mihi o te tau hou Happy new year! As I write my first Metropol column of 2021, I strongly believe the year ahead is full of possibility.

This month sees the 10th anniversary of the earthquake that changed our lives and our city forever. We will always honour the memory of the lives who were lost, and we will always ensure the lessons we have learned remain embedded within our city’s way of doing things for the future.

W

e have come off the back of a tumultuous year, our lives upended by Covid-19 heralding a new normal in the way we live, and the way we conduct business. Almost overnight, there was a change in what was possible, with many shifting to remote working, virtual learning and online shopping.

There was also not the predicted economic freefall. After the initial shock, economic activity proved far stronger and more persistent than first thought. Many key sectors fared better than expected, with the city seeing an overall spending increase of 4 percent for December 2020 to $604m compared with the same month last year. Spending

in the central city was up 9 percent to $51m for the same period. Domestic visitor spend was also up 20 percent, reaching $54m (although unable to offset the 76 percent drop in international spend).

As we leave the holiday season it is important we continue to honour the mantra of buy and support local, and embrace our uniqueness, building on existing strengths and stay willing to incorporate new approaches.

If we leverage Covid-19 as a catalyst for positive change, we can accelerate our transformation to a more productive and sustainable economy, living up to the promise of a happy and prosperous new year.

O

ur experience in the past decade has left us much better prepared for the challenges that lie ahead, and we can face the future with optimism and confidence.

At the same time, we are grateful for the opportunity reimagining our city has allowed. We know there is more to be done, but we have turned the corner.

We know a vibrant city centre is vital to the whole city’s wellbeing.

Te Papa Ōtākaro /Avon River Precinct is almost complete and has already turned our central city to face the river. It is wonderful to see so many people enjoying themselves

and the natural environment that makes us so special.

I’ve been talking to many people who have visited our city for the first time in a long time. And they tell me they can see we are truly the city of the future.

For many New Zealanders returning home from overseas or shifting out of the Auckland housing market where the average house price has hit $1m, this is making us their city of choice right now.

We will build on that as more people see the opportunities that are our city’s legacy of what happened a decade ago.

Good things take time The process of conceiving a civic project of importance can span not just months, but years and even decades.

I

’ve been lucky in my career to be involved in several pieces of public architecture, but none more interesting than the recently opened Heritage Centre on Rakiura Stewart Island.

Born out of necessity to

provide a new purpose-built facility to re-house the island’s museum exhibition, the project began almost 10 years ago.

As the first piece of civic infrastructure constructed on the island in over 25 years,

the project developed a rich narrative supported by its strong connection with the ocean, maritime history, local iwi, community and environment.

of the anchor of the waka, the vessel that holds the taonga of Rakiura. The striking form of the building represents the prow of the vessel which floats above the ground paying homage to the maritime reference. Two physical anchors representing the Maōri and European history of Rakiura Stewart Island proudly anchor the building to the site.

The preservation and conservation of a history as rich as Rakiura, Aotearoa’s Anchor, is a testament to the tireless efforts of the volunteers of the Rakiura Heritage Trust. As a designer for WSP Architecture I am proud to have been involved as it reflects our kaupapa of, “creating what matters for future generations”. This socially conscious piece of civic architecture continues our legacy to create spaces and places for all to enjoy.

“The replacement building will provide improved indoor community sports facilities for the public, including changing rooms and toilets,” says a Christchurch City Council spokesperson.

The funding is part of a government commitment ahead of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022.

The Canterbury Cricket Trust – which held the lease over the park site since 2017 – plans to use the proposed replacement building for the current building’s original recreation use.

The trust also intends to name the building the Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Centre.

While it will be primarily for cricket training, the trust intends to accommodate more community sports like netball, basketball, hockey and futsal training and playing.

The centre facilities are in addition to proposed new changing rooms in North Hagley Park.

r Brightside at the restored Public Trust building on Oxford Terrace and The Pink Lady Rooftop Bar at Muse Hotel on Manchester Street have joined the city’s hospitality offerings in recent months.

Seven floors up, The Pink Lady is the latest project from the team behind inner city pub Welles Street, European bistro Earl, and pizzeria and bottle-o, Bottle and Stone.

The latest creation of hospitality guru Tom Newfield, the rooftop bar is atop Muse Hotel run by Sarin Hotels, in the 1960s Peter Beavan-designed building.

Mr Brightside sits five storeys up, atop the restored Public Trust Building on Oxford Terrace, overlooking the Avon River and the city’s popular redeveloped hospitality hot-spot, The Terrace.

Mr Brightside is the bright idea of Jeremy Stevens, who co-owns Aikmans bar in Merivale, and it can hold about 100 people.

The Public Trust Office building was designed by celebrated architect Cecil Wood, who drew inspiration from the skyscrapers he saw in New York on a trip in the 1920s.

Both buildings have been restored and reopened for the first time since the earthquakes by property developer and investor Box 112.

And more rooftop bars could be on the way for the Garden City, with The Press reporting a third sky-high spot might be on the cards for the Spark building in Cathedral Square.

Lime Living is established

Consent applications submitted to Waimakariri District Council last year showed the proposed complex to be five storeys – the tallest in the region – and included 285 basement carparks as well as a spa, hydrotherapy, hair salon, physio, medical hub, gym, outdoor patio areas and a BBQ area.

Architectural renderings also show five storeyed buildings, as well as slick on-trend design elements like

exposed timber cladding and architectural tray, spacious balconies and ample shareduse green space.

The Sterling is set to be built in seven stages, the first beginning soon and welcoming residents in the second half of the year. The first stage will incorporate 18 villas, a temporary

community centre along with the main reserve and green spaces.

Meanwhile, fellow aged care developer Summerset Group has purchased land to build a nine-hectare development nearby in Rangiora for over 300 independent homes. The main building of Summerset’s

Casebrook development also opened in March, with 88 percent of accommodation offerings pre-sold.

Stage 2 of Arvida’s Park Lane in central Christchurch is also set to open this year with 79 apartments, making it one of the largest multistorey mass buildings in New Zealand.

Generosity propels cathedral restoration Another sizable donation from a Christchurch businessman and former politician has put the restoration of the city’s ChristChurch Cathedral $4 million closer to its fundraising goal.

hilip Burdon, a former National Party MP and frequent member of the National Business Review’s rich list, made the generous donation on top of $1 million already donated after the 2011 earthquakes which decimated the city central’s iconic structure.

A $154 million restoration of the cathedral was announced last year as part of the Cathedral Visitors Centre, which will include a café, landscaped garden and museum and retail stores, as well as a Cathedral Centre providing gathering spaces, offices and amenities.

When announced in October, the restoration’s leaders,

the ChristChurch Cathedral Reinstatement Trust, said there was a $51.2 million funding shortfall. A fundraising campaign set to be launched in March is seeking to raise $26 million.

Post-earthquakes, Burdon led a campaign with fellow former MP, the late Jim Anderton, to save the cathedral from demolition, and recently told The Press he was confident the necessary funds could be raised.

“The fundraising events over the next few months are going to be the moment of truth for the restoration campaign to proceed on schedule,” he told the publication.

Burdon says he is passionate

about the success of the project because of his, “very personal belief in the unique historical and heritage significance of the cathedral. It is an utterly irreplaceable part of our heritage.”

Work on the cathedral has already begun, with large steel frames installed on the outside of the building as part of a stabilisation phase. This phase is fully funded, will cost about $11.8 million, and take about two years.

Following this, the next phase for the restoration will be strengthening and reinstatement – for which funding will need to be in place

by October this year.

Funding for the supporting buildings which will make up the visitors centre will need to be raised by mid-2022, and for the new tower by mid- 2023.

possible in the landscape, so we took the utmost care to ensure we didn’t disturb any more rock than we needed to.”

That rock needed to be drilled into to lay the foundations, but was no drama for Shaun and business co-owner, Derek Craig.

“Although we didn’t design this project, we can do everything from design and consenting to build,” says Shaun. “We can do everything, or just the part of the process you need.”

History repeats – and wins The home at 12 Julius Terrace was an earthquake casualty requiring demolition. Once given the green light for a same site rebuild, the owner’s brief for both architect and builder was to create an exact replica of the original 1910 home, including its chapel.

Of the Special Award, judges commented: “It was so important to the owner that this special piece of Christchurch history not be lost, to that end, he insisted no detail be changed or modified.

Traditional craftsmen, including stonemasons, specialist tilers, fibrous plasterers and builders, using building methods of a bygone era, have crafted a building that you would think was the original.”

This winner is a build on the flats that Steve Brown Builders can long be proud of, but for now it’s back to what they love; building and renovating beautiful homes on the hills.
