FROM THE EDITOR LYNDA PAPESCH

Caring for our men This month New Zealand shone a spotlight on men’s health here. Sadly it has shown that in many important aspects, men and their wider families are being let down badly. We’re not just talking mental health, although that is a huge NATIONAL MULTI-AWARD WINNERS 2013 - 2019

ongoing issue, but about men’s health in general; their physical, mental and emotional health. Once a topic hidden in dark recesses, thankfully men’s health issues are now being openly spoken about. Leading the charge are some wellknown and highly respected Kiwi blokes, with whom others can readily identify. Some of them have suffered major health problems themselves, while others have experienced them with family, friends and colleagues. They all have a common goal: trying to help others who are going through tough times. Throughout this issue, there are stories about what is being done in this field and the

lengths some people are taking to prevent current and future generations suffering. That is admirable and something we should all be supporting. On the topic of support, we should also all be in favour of having a new stadium. I was at Orangetheory Stadium in the rain and biting cold for the Crusaders verses Chiefs semi-final rugby clash. I came away convinced that we do need a new covered stadium. The economic benefits would be far-reaching, not to mention the delight of watching sport and music in comfort and warmth. Bring it on! Speaking of the Crusaders, congratulations opn another great win. You do us proud.

Changing Course O U R

Many will remember Sir John Kirwan from his legendary days as an All Black, yet others will be more in sync with his work in raising awareness of mental health issues. Metropol editor Lynda Papesch caught up with him during his current tour of the country to help improve children’s mental wellbeing.

8 June 23, 2022 Metropol

One of the driving forces behind the project is to raise $1 million to roll Mitey out to more schools across the country. Mitey is already taught in 70 schools, with 300 more on the waiting list. The ultimate goal to have it taught in all 1200 New Zealand schools. Almost two thirds of Kiwis (60 percent) don’t believe we’re doing enough as a country to improve our children’s mental wellbeing, 71 percent think we need to invest in more school-based education, 70 percent believe we need improved government and healthcare services and 51 percent think it will take a cultural shift in the New Zealand psyche. Sir John agrees. “We have some of the worst mental health statistics in the OECD, with particularly high youth suicide rates, and we believe it will take a generation to change this.” Introducing the programme into 40 more schools will imact positively on the lives of more than 11,000 Kiwi children, he believes. “This is an investment in your children, your whanau and your grandchildren; and together I know we can make a huge difference,” he explains. Parents, grandparents and extended family all have a role to play, he believes. “It’s about making a difference for our children. Through Mitey, we are

“MENTAL HEALTH ISN’T PREJUDICED. IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT WE LOOK LIKE, WHERE WE COME FROM OR HOWMUCH MONEY WE HAVE, IT CAN AFFECT US ALL.” providing Kiwi kids with the tools they need to nurture their own emotional wellbeing, as well as those around them.” The programme works with children from year 1 all the way through to year 8, and teaches them age appropriate skills so they are mentally and emotionally better equipped to face life’s challenges. “Society has changed very quickly and I think that providing children with the tools they learn through Mitey, we will have a real chance at changing the face of mental health in this country for the better.”

CARING FOR OUR CHILDREN

“T

here’s a huge pressure on our children these days. I think by creating preventative measures such as the Mitey curriculum, it will go a long way to help and make a change we all want to see in our country.” The path ahead needs everyone focused on change, he believes. “Parents should have an awareness of their child’s mental wellbeing, as well as showing vulnerability themselves, and should make mental health and emotions a normal thing to talk about together.” “Mental health isn’t prejudiced. It doesn’t matter what we look like, where we come from or how much money we have, it can affect us all. However, I do think that emotionally

and culturally, males maybe do find it harder to talk about their mental health and their emotions. “As parents and grandparents, all we want to do is make sure we’re supporting our tamariki from a young age.”

FREE COMMUNITY EVENT Sir John will visit Christchurch on Friday 8 July to raise funds and awareness for his charitable initiative Mitey. He will host a free community event, open to the public, the school community and mental health advocates, at Whitau School (221 Woodham Road, Linwood), starting at 2.45pm. To find out more about this event visit www.themiteydrive.org.

WHAT IS MITEY? Mitey is a new approach to teaching mental health as part of the New Zealand curriculum, enabling children to learn about it at school, every day, just like literacy and maths. Developed over two years by the Sir John Kirwan Foundation, the programme had input from highly experienced specialists from the University of Auckland as well as New Zealand educators, teachers and clinicians. Provided free to New Zealand primary and intermediate schools, Mitey has already positively impacted more than 12,000 New Zealand children.

P

roving that one man can make a difference, Sir John Kirwan has taken to the road, travelling from Auckland to Invercargill, hosting community events in eight centres, including Christchurch. His message is simple, yet potentially life-saving: that teaching an ‘ABC of mental health’ consistently to children when they’re young may help them better understand and manage life’s ups and downs, and instil in them better empathy for others who may be having a tough time. Sir John knows all about having a tough time, suffering his own well documented mental health battle. Now he hopes his approach will help others, especially children, avoid the same devastating problems and help change the mental health culture in New Zealand. Already – through the charitable trust that bears his name – he’s helped develop the Mitey mental health programme for schools. Now, in response to new data highlighting the prevalent risk of mental health problems to children, he’s partnered with Land Rover to drive across Aotearoa, raising awareness and funds for mental health.

SPRINTING TO GOLD Sprinting is an exciting sport in New Zealand right now, as new generations are making waves and breaking records, putting the nation on the international map. Georgia Summerton speaks to one of these rising stars.

C

anterbury sprinter Tiaan Whelpton has an impressive track record, and he still has a lot he is yet to show the world. Born in South Africa, Tiaan found his pace as a child and tried a few areas of athletics before settling on sprinting. “I was always the fast kid growing up in school and started competing in athletics at a very young age, however when I got into high school, I started to fall a bit behind the rest as everyone else started growing before I did.” Deciding to put sprinting on hold, Tiaan focused more on long jump and triple jump where he excelled. After a growth spurt at age 17, he decided to give running another go, and the rest is history. “In my final year of high school, I gave the sprints a good go and managed to make it to the South African Schools 100m Final where I placed fifth. This was when I realised that maybe there could be more to the sprinting if I’d managed to make it

What's your property worth in this changing market ? Call me today for a complimentary appraisal! Sally Pomeroy-Fitzgerald

022 074 0879

that far in just a year.” It was just a few years ago that Tiaan realised sprinting could be something he could do at an international level, after an exceptional result that qualified him for the World University Games. “Unfortunately, the games did not go ahead due to Covid-19, but it was definitely a big confidence boost for me as I felt like there was still a lot left in the tank. Currently, I have a wind-aided PB of 10.09 and a wind-legal PB of 10.18 (a NZ Resident Record) sitting agonisingly close to qualifying for some of the world’s top events. Due to the unfortunate timing of my career kicking off in the global pandemic I’ve yet to make my international debut for New Zealand, however, I’m determined now more than ever to proudly represent New Zealand on the world stage.” There is no doubt this competitive level of sport can take its toll not only physically but mentally too. “There are a whole bunch of things athletes do to take their recovery to the next level, things like saunas, ice baths,

compression therapy, massage guns, and using all sorts of creams, supplements, and relaxation techniques. But at the end of the day, people tend to get carried away focusing on these kinds of things. “There’s no point trying to chase the extreme end of your wellbeing with all the latest and greatest methods and gadgets if you’ve yet to really get a solid base, and for me that comes from sleep and nutrition. I also think it’s good for the soul to just try and spend a little time outdoors when you can.” So what’s ahead for Tiaan? “The 2022 Commonwealth Games logo has been on my phone lock screen for the better part of a year now. Going to Birmingham would mean the world to me. It’s been rather frustrating this far not managing to get overseas yet but I’m confident in my ability and patiently but also eagerly awaiting an opportunity. Being able to compete at a world-class event like the Commonwealth games I feel would really bring the best out of me and allow me to produce the world-class times I believe I’m capable of.”

"I’VE YET TO MAKE MY INTERNATIONAL DEBUT FOR NEW ZEALAND, HOWEVER, I’M DETERMINED NOW MORE THAN EVER TO PROUDLY REPRESENT NEW ZEALAND ON THE WORLD STAGE."

TIAAN’S PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR

“Managing to break the New Zealand Resident record would have to be my biggest achievement so far. This basically means I’m the fastest Kiwi ever on New Zealand soil. I’ve also got the title of fastest ever Cantabrian to go along with it.”

HOW TIAAN FINDS MOTIVATION

“People often ask how I stay motivated, and the short answer is I don’t. Some days you just don’t have that motivation to go to the track or the gym, but what’s more important than motivation is dedication and consistency. If you can keep training even through periods of low motivation, then you’ll help set up healthy routines, and eventually, the motivation will come back, just don’t give up in the meantime and stay focused on your mission.”

rom giving advice, to listing, promoting properties, and helping buy or sell, realtors are specialists in their field. Fernanda Hammett comes from a long line of strong women. That heritage, combined with her family’s unconditional support and her ongoing commitment to ‘never stopping learning and gaining knowledge’, has established her career as an award-winning real estate agent. People are not just a number to her. “I talk to my clients, get inside their head and share their emotional journey. This is who I am,” she explains. Her genuine empathy, honesty and commitment to ensuring any sale and purchase is a shared positive experience has seen her rewarded with many repeat clients, numerous recommendations and a growing loyal client base. FERNANDA’S TOP THREE TIPS WHEN CHOOSING AN AGENT: 1. Make a connection; do you feel their enthusiasm and commitment? 2. Do you trust they will get the best deal for you? Anyone can promise the world but do you sense they will follow through on the sales pitch? 3. Are they available and engaged? Buying and selling involves a roller coaster range of emotions – and interactions – for the duration of the process. Be sure your agent is available when you need them.

IN THE LAP OF LUXURY A little luxury goes a long way sometimes, and that is certainly true for relaxing and rejuvenation. A soak in a hot tub, dinner out with fine wine, and an ultra-comfortable bed are part of the experience, and so too are amazing environments. Some people head for warmer climates to take a break during the colder months, while others are happy to explore what’s on offer in New Zealand. Cantabrians are spoilt for choice with a vast number of luxury resorts, retreats, lodges, and experiences within a few hours drive or a short plane trip away. These pages feature some of those available.

I’m thinking of selling my business; when should I contact a Business Broker?

Once you’ve commenced thinking selling your business, we advise contacting a Business Broker as soon as possible. A Business Broker can provide guidance on: 1. Current market value – is this the best time to take your business to the market, or should you wait for a better time? 2. How to maximise the performance of your business to present it to the market in the best possible way? This may be as simple as extracting personal expenditure from the business accounts or looking at future sales prospects to increase business revenue.

fashion & beauty STYLE MASTERCLASS:

FRENCH TUCK A simple styling trick of tucking in only the front of your shirt and letting the back fall loose, also known as the French tuck.

T

his technique helps define your waistline while still allowing for the drape effect of a longer, looser top, giving you the best of both worlds. When done right, a French tuck leaves a shirt or sweater loose in the back, balancing the proportions of an outfit. Although a simple technique, there are a few tricks to making sure your French tuck looks right. It works best with loosefitting, floaty tops and oversized knits paired with high-waisted denim and skirts. For fitted tops, a full tuck usually works better.

Details: Plum Sweater Find me: Ruby

HERE ARE A FEW TIPS With a T-shirt or jumper Tuck slightly off-center for an effortless look. Use one hand to tuck your top into your preferred side, and then adjust and loosen the rest of the material with both hands, letting your top drape down at the sides of the tuck. With a shirt Try tucking in just one side of the shirt, and letting the other hang out. Tuck in the side of the shirt that has the buttons, leaving the side with the buttonholes untucked. With a belt A great way to show off a statement belt if you’re wearing something bulky on top, like an oversized sweater. For belted looks, try the French tuck centered, framing the belt buckle.

T

he ring stack is a trend that is here to stay. It lets you freely customise, curate, and make your look your own. You can create a go-to stack for every day featuring versatile ring styles or change up your stack to match your different outfits and moods. Here are some suggestions from jewellery guru Michael Hill. 1: CHOOSE YOUR STATEMENT RING Start with your centrepiece ring. This could be a bold design in precious metals, a diamond ring, a coloured gemstone ring or an heirloom piece. 2: ADD A DAINTY RING Add a dainty ring on your finger, to complement your statement piece. If you went with diamonds in the first step, add a fine diamond ring here for extra sparkle. Add interest with a unique shape, such as a chevron or contoured ring. 3: BOOKEND YOUR STATEMENT RING Now slip on another dainty diamond ring on the other side of your statement piece. By styling your centre piece ring with a fine style on either size, you'll amplify the sparkle of your rings and create a beautifully balanced look.

5A WEEK TIMES

Exercising regularly is good for people’s immune systems, with research suggesting that it may even lower the risk of upper respiratory infections, such as the common cold.

E

xerciseNZ chief executive Richard Beddie suggests that even 30 minutes of moderate exercise five times a week is enough to bring about benefits. He says exercise is beneficial for the immune system, partly because of the hormones it helps to release. “These are called catecholamines, which people may know better as adrenaline and noradrenaline. “They elicit the quick release of important immune cells that help detect the presence of viruses or other pathogens in the body. “They also increase the amount of movement of the immune cells between the blood and tissue, which

helps immune cells detect and prevent illnesses caused by viruses or other pathogens.” He adds that research shows exercise is one of the best ways to increase these hormone levels, although not much research has been done yet to determine whether exercising while sick with a cold will help you get over your illness quicker than if you don’t exercise. “People should use exercise as a prevention tool, not a treatment.” he says. “But they shouldn’t feel they have to exercise if they are sick. “Sometimes the best remedy for a cold is rest, staying hydrated and taking any prescribed medicines if needed.”

Enabling positive actions

The latest Review of Men’s Health Research in New Zealand highlights that globally there has been a growing awareness of the health challenges faced by men. Also noted is that the current public health agenda in New Zealand does not specifically address the needs of men, although an increasing number of groups

and organisations are taking on that selfappointed role. The disparity between men’s and women’s health awareness is one of the reasons why the organisers of Men’s Muster Fiordland have a goal of delivering practical health messages to one hundred ‘Kiwi blokes,’ using the positive drivers of men’s behaviour, such as competition, camaraderie, and adventure, to focus on charging their engines.

Participants will assemble in scenic Fiordland to form a new network, be challenged to learn new things, try new things, and apply new things, as well as get a taste of local hospitality. “The product of Muster is enabling positive emotions and actions that will lead to positive changes to men’s longterm health and wellbeing,” says organiser Samantha McBride from liveMEwell.

Boost your lymphatic system Draining the lymph system is believed to help improve blood flow, circulation, energy, and the immune system, to relieve stress, and speed up surgery recovery.

I

t’s also credited with improving skin elasticity, digestion, weight loss, hormonal imbalances and reducing cellulite, constipation, bloating, puffiness, and water retention. Lymphatic drainage massage involves bringing fluid stuck between cells and in body tissue to the lymph nodes, to be pumped out of the body. Massage practitioner, and company director of Me Time Wellness, Vanessa Krambeck says that in her native Brazil, lymphatic drainage is considered mandatory after any cosmetic procedure. “They have evolved the original Vodder technique to another level, combining it with some of Leduc and Godoy manoeuvers, to deliver more instantaneous and visible results,” she says.

“It requires a deeper touch, so it helps with cellulite appearance and increases circulation in general, creating that ‘sculpting’ effect. “Think of the lymphatic system as the body’s drainage system, part of our circulatory system and our immune system in the large mechanical process that is the human body. Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump to keep the flow moving, so when it’s impaired, that fluid builds up, delaying the body’s ordinary functionality, causing swelling, lethargy, tiredness, heavy legs, and inflammation,” she adds.

Raising awareness of men’s health June has been Men’s Health Month and throughout New Zealand organisations, community groups and individuals have been working hard to ensure that all Kiwi men are supported and empowered to live healthier, happier, longer lives.

O

ne of these is the registered charity Men’s Health Trust, whose chair, Pulotu Selio Solomon, notes that from age 40 onwards, heart disease and cancer are increasingly common causes of mortality for men, and between the ages of 50 and 75 years, the overall number of deaths for men is 30 percent higher than for women. “A study of 17 European countries found men under 75 years have almost twice the number of deaths as women in the same age group,” he says. “Our vision is for New Zealand to have healthy men, families, and communities. Men’s Health Month is about inspiring men to make minor lifestyle changes that will have a major impact. It could be something as simple as developing a relationship with a doctor through an annual checkup, but even this could improve their overall health and even save their life.”

According to Solomon, common mortality issues for men, such as the prevalence of heart disease and some cancers, can be attributed to men’s adverse lifestyles, including excessive alcohol intake, lack of exercise and inappropriate diet. Men’s Health Trust has been promoting good health practices for New Zealand men since 2007, and Solomon says the organisation’s aim is for all men to make good healthy choices and take action to live healthier every day. On average, one New Zealand man dies every three hours of a preventable illness, and between the ages of 15–30 years, suicide is the leading cause of death for men. Twelve percent of male suicide attempts result in death, compared to two percent for women. Women tend to have higher rates of depression diagnoses, yet they tend to seek help for mental health more often. Men are less likely to reach out for help and this results in a much higher suicide rate; compared to women, men are three times more likely to die by suicide.

GETTING HELP Men’s Health Trust runs several initiatives aimed at targeting various pain points for men’s health, including the highly successful CHECKMATES PI programme. The free community service to men in Auckland, it has connected more than 1000 members with various health and wellbeing partners and services since it began in late 2018. “It’s a great example of what we can achieve with the right resources and supports in place, and we would love to grow and expand this programme to more Kiwi men,” says Solomon. Men’s Health Trust is also raising awareness around men’s health and wellbeing, with a weekly ‘Menpathy’ podcast, using conversation to bring confidence and comfort to men in New Zealand around mental health.

cuisine Great food and service Imagine a local establishment that is as comfortable as your own living room, but possibly featuring a more interesting fitout.

T

his establishment can provide every drink you can think of, and offers a range of food, whether full meals or snacks, to suit your every fancy. When the weather is cool, it is cosy and welcoming inside. The fantastic covered balcony with views towards the Southern Alps steps up when al fresco is the call. The service is seamless and the staff are welcoming. Anyone is welcome from work colleagues, extended whanau, the underfives, or luxuriate in some ‘me-time’. The ideal spot to bring overseas visitors, “this is how we do things here,” the establishment says. In Ashburton, these imaginings have materialised as The Fine Lion, a relaxed dining experience owned and run by experienced restauranteurs, Belinda and Matt Fine. “Our vision was to bring the experience of The Terrace in Christchurch to Ashburton. It turned out to be a popular one, with people coming from around South Canterbury to enjoy our

hospitality,” explains Matt. The menu is stellar, offering entrees and sharing plates all day until late, lunch choices until 4pm and the dinner choices start at 5pm. Vegans, vegetarians, and gluten free diners are well catered for plus other requirements on request. The only real issue is what to choose, because every dish is mouth-wateringly good. Steak devotees get three choices in the evening: the 55-day aged eye fillet, the 55-day aged ribeye, or a guest steak. If you look forward to something sweet, the dessert menu offers some classic favourites with little extras you didn’t know you needed, as well as the Baked Camembert with White Balsamic Onion Jam and Freeze Dried Manuka Honey. “We love people to come in for drinks and our fabulous Bar Bites too,” says Matt. “Just make yourself at home and we’ll do the rest.”

melt-in-your mouth S low cookers are an excellent way to ensure dinner is ready when you walk in the door after work. Or create and pop your favourite slow dish dish in the oven for a few hours. Braising is often used for large cuts of beef, such as a roast or brisket, with a small amount of liquid. This method is ideal for tenderising tougher – and typically less expensive – cuts of

beef, lamb and venison. Favourite cuts to braise include beef short ribs, brisket, beef cheeks, pork and lamb shoulders, lamb shanks, and chicken thighs and legs. Leave bones in, if possible, to add flavour. Specific braised dishes include pot roast, chicken cacciatore, goulash, coq au vin, beef bourguignon, beef brisket, oxtail, and tajines, among others.

cuisine

Slow cooked

Braising, aka slow cooking, is great any time of the year for tougher cuts of meat, but really comes into its own during winter.

How to braise properly Add stock or water halfway up the meat you’re braising and bring to a boil, then immediately lower to a simmer. Once it’s simmering, you can add in aromatics, and vegetables such as carrots, potatoes and kumaras, yams, leeks, cabbage, and mushrooms. Cover and keep it at a low simmer on the stovetop or in the oven at 180 degrees Celsius.

Delhi inspired delights A light and fluffy naan bread dipped in a saucy curry is a favourite meal for many, and no surprise considering Indian cuisine is loved for being flavourful, warming and delicious.

T

he dream of husband-and-wife duo Kiah and Ron, Indian Roots celebrates authentic Indian cuisine, just as they remember from their life in India. After struggling to find an Indian restaurant in Christchurch that matched the flavours of food they loved, Ron and Kiah left their fulltime jobs to start their very own restaurant. The light and open space is vibrant and welcoming, filled with fragrant smells of freshly ground spices coming from the kitchen. The menu will spoil you for choice, but much-loved favourites include the Mutton Seekh Masala – Mother-in-law’s go-to flame cooked seekh kebab finished in onion

gravy, as well as the Chicken Changezi – an Old Delhi special dish with tangy flavours. Available for dining in or takeaway, enjoy authentic Indian food in the friendly restaurant or tucked up on the couch for a quiet night in. For those with dietary requirements, there is no missing out here. All the curries are gluten-free, and there is a range of delicious vegan, vegetarian, and dairy-free options too. A keto offering is also in the works and will be available soon. Located at 1 Hamil Rd, Halswell, call 03 261 9260 or visit the website below.

enowned for their fresh coffee from the home of the original Hummingbird roastery, Oddfellows Café in Addington also has a huge variety of delicious home-made baked goods (you must try the famous buttermilk date scones). “Our coffee, scones, bacon egg nests and cheesy beef sausage rolls have their own huge following,” says owner Joel. So much so that takeaways include kilo bags of Hummingbird coffee beans, fourpack frozen par-baked scones and three pack frozen sausage rolls and pies to take

home and heat in the weekend. Oddfellows is a bright and airy space, whether you’re inside or in the spacious sunny courtyard. Add in their variety of seating and it becomes the ideal space for everything from an intimate brunch, to hosting your next big team breakfast or lunch. At Oddfellows, the quality of the coffee goes without saying, “and so we work every day to match that to be your best neighbourhood café.”

Yummy goodies for everyone What is a road trip without that fantastic eatery we have come to know and love because it caters to everyone in the car?

L

et’s face it, food is a subject everybody has a view on, and when you find the place that has obviously put thought, heart and soul into that subject, that’s the reason you keep going back. Pique-Nique café is one such eatery, and owner Robert Jacobs encapsulates in three words the points of difference here: “Diversity and inclusivity.” By diversity, Robert means that all the food is packed with an array of nutrients that provide a full, well-rounded diet; and by inclusivity, he means all dietary regimens are catered for.

“A standard diet, a ketogenic, vegan, vegetarian, paleo or diabetic diet, our food covers all requirements. We provide nourishing food that works in harmony with the body.” Being diagnosed some years ago with an auto-immune disorder brought home to Robert the need for an inclusive eatery. “We’ve created a space with options here; you don’t have to make do.” Park up at Pique-Nique, 300 Hilton Highway, The Complex, Washdyke, Timaru. POLKA DOTS There’s a playfulness to polka dots that keeps them timeless and often makes them a favourite in the fashion world. And while whimsical, they can also add an air of sophistication to an interior space when used subtly.

H

ere are a few tips for working polka dots into your home. Size and colour If you are going for playful, then larger dots coupled with highly contrasting colours will draw attention to the pattern. For a subtle look, using more neutral colours that do not obviously clash can also be effective while retaining a level of fun. Strike a balance A balanced room will look sophisticated. If polka dots are used on a pillow or small feature, then you can go bold with colour.

If you’re covering a room in dots, go for less colour. Remember that scale is what makes or breaks a room. You need a balance of scale, pattern and texture to create a well-composed room. Keep it neutral To keep polka dots from looking too childish, opt for more neutral colours, or black and white, and focus on the scale. Dots that are too large can look like they belong in a nursery, but smaller, black-and-white polka dots on a statement chair or wallpaper in a bedroom or office can look sophisticated and chic.

say it with

STRIPES BY LYNDA PAPESCH

Stripes are not everyone’s favourite interior decorating trend yet when used judiciously they can create impact, an illusion of space and add colour to any room in a home.

F

or example vertical stripes make ceilings look higher, while horizontal ones make rooms appear wider. When decorating with stripes, it is all about the colour, not the width. The latter can be varied for different effect, but less is best with colour so designs are visually arresting, not alarming. Best use of colour is a maximum of three in any single space, a main colour with two accents plus white.

TOP TIPS 1. COMBINE STRIPES WITH PATTERNS Florals and graphic patterns mix beautifully with stripes. Pick one pattern in colours that complement your stripes, and add textural plain accent colours. Cushions, duvets and curtains are one way to achieve this in a bedroom. 2. LAYER STRIPES WITH STRIPES For a playful look, try layering different stripes. Vary the widths, but keep the colour scheme in mind. Think upholstered bedheads, cushions, and throws. 3. ADD A STRIPED RUG OR RUNNER Striped rugs are a simple and effective way of adding colour and pizazz to a plain space. Try a striped hall runner to offset plain walls, or a feature rug in the lounge. 4. UPDATE YOUR KITCHEN BACKSPLASH Use tiles in vertical and horizontal stripe patterns to inject colour and a focal point into a plain kitchen. Classic black and white is a favourite with many homeowners. 5. USE STRIPES IN UPHOLSTERY A simple addition such as a pair of striped armchairs can create a focal point. Tie mis-matched chairs together with the same fabric, and play with pattern and stripes.

Spotless

hard floors Keeping hard floors clean is a breeze with Karcher’s FC7 Cordless Hard Floor Cleaner. Metropol’s gadget guru Ian Knott takes one for a test drive.

W

ith many homes, old and new, featuring wood, tiled or polished concrete floors, time spent cleaning them can be doubled with the need to vacuum or sweep before you mop. But Karcher’s new all-inone FC7 Hard Floor Cleaner cuts cleaning time in half by sweeping and mopping at the same time. Watch dust, hair, crumbs, and spillages all disappear into one effortless and very manoeuvrable machine. The cordless FC7 is so lightweight that it feels like it’s floating on a cushion of air, removing all the elbow grease required in normal mopping. The rechargeable battery runs for around 45 minutes on a full

charge, enough to deal to most hard flooring situations. There are twin water tanks on the FC7, one residing on the handle for clean water and your choice of detergent, and the other down by the rollers for collecting debris and dirty water. Once finished, the rollers can be rinsed in the accompanying basestation, but the whole mop comes apart for thorough cleaning, including cloth covers on the four rollers, which can be thrown in the washing machine. If time is precious and you have a lot of hard floors, then the Karcher FC7 is an absolute godsend.

KARCHER FC7 CORDLESS HARD FLOOR CLEANER • Sweeps and mops simultaneously • Lightweight and cordless • 4 hour charge for 45 minutes run time

• Easy to clean • Stands on the base-station, charged and ready to use

Hang up your heater Heating comes under the microscope when days get colder, so it’s an ideal time to check on what the best options are.

M Herschel infrared picture panel heater

ost people will be familiar with options such as wood burners, radiant heaters and heat pumps. One of the newest trends is infrared heat panels, which can add to a room’s décor as well as keep its occupants toasty warm. Slim, wall-hugging and stylish, infrared panels heat the walls, ceiling and floor evenly which absorbs the heat and gently re-emits it back into the room, instead of directly heating large volumes of air in a room.

And they can double as art work hanging on the wall, as mirrors, or just plain white panel heaters, thanks to German design and ingenuity.

Benefits include: • Reduced energy use • Natural heat • 100 percent net zero carbon heating • Helps prevent mould and condensation • Maintenance free, long lifetime, over 95 percent recyclable • Easy to install

Home revamp Bespoke joinery and beautiful timber is a modern marriage - a solid investment.

M

urray Hewitt Joinery has home-revamp projects nailed. “We’re essentially a one-stop shop. With skills in all areas, we can incorporate themes and timbers throughout,” says director Murray Hewitt. He says with kitchens, for example, new windows complement an upgrade. New classic doublehung, solid-timber windows have modern fixtures. “We combine substrates such as old stone and wood in panelling. A recent bespoke entertainment unit looked stunning in black steel and wood. “We do porcelain kitchen benchtops, where front and top are mitred to form one big box. It’s clever, streamlined, easy to clean, extremely hard and non-porous. With different colours and finishes, it’s great for vanities too. Using negative detailing

and LED lighting make surfaces such as an island top appear to float. Murray embraces modern magic such as LED-lit clothes rails in custom-designed wardrobes. The company has also reinvented entertaining tradition with a home bar in solid Oak, and bespoke barbeque areas. Good joinery can make smart use of small or challenging spaces. The team has been creating cupboard-space under their custom-made staircases, and designing display areas for small businesses. “In-house designer Bryanna creates the project ideas with clients, and our builders work around you so there’s no need to move out.”

ased in Christchurch, The Tree People was founded in 2004 by Ra and Megan Hammer, who knew that tree care could be done sustainably and economically and wanted to prove it. “Trees are our passion,” they say. “Caring for trees is both an art and a science and we enjoy the challenge of working in complex environments and with trees that others may have deemed too difficult.” The company’s services include all aspects of tree work, ranging from mulching to trimming, removals and transplanting to work around power lines. They will even recycle the mulch back into a garden as ground cover. Critical to the company’s work philosophy are two particular approaches – vista

management and sustainability. Vista management is managing vegetation to optimise and frame a homeowner’s view with properly pruned vegetation. As trees become larger, they can obscure a desirable view. Attempting to maintain views is one of the main reasons that people cut or top trees, which can sometimes cause bigger problems than it solves. Call in the professionals. As far as sustainability is concerned, The Tree People’s central ethos is to have a minimal environmental impact on all their work sites. They use electric chainsaws, biodegradable lubrication and silt traps to prevent runoff into sensitive riparian areas. They also insulate their chipper to reduce noise pollution and use biodiesel in every piece of machinery they operate.

An art and a science Professional, experienced arborists, such as The Tree People, can improve tree health, tree structure and add light, space, and beauty to trees with correct pruning. Indeed pruning a little and often should always be the first step in a tree care regimen; removal is the last resort. There are several different pruning techniques to get the most out of your trees. Canopy lifting involves the removal of lower canopy branches to provide clearance for buildings, vehicles, pedestrians, to enhance views and increase light. This is a great alternative to removal to retain your tree assets and reap the benefits of mature trees on your property. Thinning increases light penetration and air movement through the crown. It also opens

the foliage of a tree, reduces weight on heavy limbs, and helps retain the tree’s natural shape. This decreases the chances of disease and can prolong the life of the tree. Now is the perfect time to get a trusted professional to inspect your trees. For a free appraisal, give the team a call today on 0508 TREE PEOPLE. MINIMALIST

dreams A perennial fixture in the upper echelons of the annual Resene Top 20 list, Resene Black White has long been a beloved hue among designers and homeowners alike.

T

he chalky and soft calcite greywhite gets its descriptive name from the slight hint of black that’s present in its tinter. The result is a perfectly balanced neutral that makes for a solid base for building the room of your dreams. If you’re after a minimalist look in your bedroom, you may decide that you don’t want a headboard or a large piece of artwork to be the focal point. Instead, painting a colour block in a different strength of Resene Black White than what is on your walls and floor can achieve that necessary focus in a far more subtle manner. In this bedroom, we used Resene Double Black White over Resene Quarter Black White to create enough contrast for the effect to be visible without standing out too much. As a unique twist on this idea, we also took our colour block on to the floor using the same colour as a way of defining the entire bed area while breaking the typical boundary of where the wall meets the floor. To create the same look at home with a queen-sized bed, use a level to measure and mask the wall portion of your block to be 2100mm wide and 1650mm high and the floor portion to be 2100mm wide and 2320mm long. Be sure to use high quality painter’s masking tape to create your effect, and to press firmly when you apply it to ensure you get a clean, crisp line after removal. From here, there are limitless options for how you can build out and personalise your look. You could choose to keep your colour scheme truly achromatic and neutral by accessorising your space with only whites, greys and blacks. To ensure there is enough visual interest in the space, you’ll want to make sure you choose a variety of shades from very light through to very dark such as Resene Eighth Black White, Resene Eighth Tapa, Resene Tapa and Resene Armadillo to create adequate contrast. Another idea is to create contrast by layering a selection of soft dusted pastel hues in with your neutrals such as Resene Alpaca, Resene Pearl Bush and Resene Kangaroo anchored with a touch of charcoal such as Resene Half Nocturnal.

PAINT Wall and floor in Resene Quarter Black White with rectangular painted wall effect in Resene Double Black White, floating shelf in Resene Double Black White, plant pot in Resene Bullwhip. ACCESSORIES Duvet cover, pillowcases, sheets, cushions, throws and basket from Città, carafe and glass from Freedom. Get inspired at your local Resene ColorShop, www.resene.co.nz/colorshops. JAPANDI STYLE Kiwis love trying new trends such as Japandi style, which blends the smooth, modern lines of Scandinavian design with the sleek, functional, elegance of the Japanese aesthetic.

M

natural, clean, minimalist look steadily growing in popularity. Here are some tips from Metropol to get you started: KEEP IT NATURAL

inimalist yet welcoming, Japandi is all about using neutral tones, lots of textures and natural materials. Influenced by the ancient Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi (a way of life which values slow-living, contentment and simplicity) and the Scandinavian practice of hygge (which embraces comfort, cosiness and wellbeing), Japandi is a

1. Opt for neutral, muted colours such as beige, sand, cream, taupe, oatmeal and stone. 2. Avoid brights and whites. The idea is to create a calm, harmonious atmosphere. 3. For contrast use soft Scandi shades pale pink, blue, green or grey – or add richness with a darker accent colour, such as black or a charcoal grey. 4. Use light-coloured natural fibres and sustainable materials, such as rattan, bamboo, cotton, hemp and paper. 5. For visual interest, add in some metal components.

MIX AND MATCH 1. Bamboo, rattan, and wood are excellent choices for furniture. Scandinavian pieces typically feature clean, simple lines. In Japan, it’s common to have stained or painted woods and curved shaped furniture. Mix and match the two styles to increase visual interest. 2. Try to make the colour of your wood match as much as possible, to bring the room together. MINIMAL ACCESSORIES 1. Keep accessories minimal to avoid clutter. Less is more so invest in a few stunning future classic pieces. 2. Invest in carefully curated mirrors, picture frames, artwork, wall hangings, table lamps, vases, and rugs. 3. Use plants as an accessory, to bring nature indoors. Try a bonsai tree or a Phalaenopsis (moth) orchid.

Leading to the world and beyond Seven years of planning, construction and fine tuning went into Rolleston’s $22.7 million library, Te Ara Ātea, creating an exceptional visual and functional civic space.

O

pened in December last year, Te Ara Ātea includes nationally significant taonga, cutting edge technology, a sensory space and New Zealand’s largest video projection wall. The 2200 square metre library and multi-functional civic centre sits proudly on Tennyson St in Rolleston. Its name, meaning ‘the unobstructed trail to the world and beyond’, was gifted to the community by Te Taumutu Rūnanga, which worked in conjunction with the Selwyn District Council on the building and the landscape. Designed by architects Warren and Mahoney, it was built by Armitage Williams, with internal fit out and displays by exhibition and experience design agency, Workshop E. The bespoke interior was specially created by Workshop E to tell the story of the region and also the iwi.

www.aeservices.co.nz 74 June 23, 2022 Metropol

Te Ara Ātea reflects and recognises the building’s location within a network of traditional Ngāi Tahu settlements and mahinga kai areas on the central part of the Canterbury Plains. TELLING A STORY Of particular importance to this network are the trails that connect the many mahinga kai sites on the shores of Te Waihora and across the plains to the Waimakariri in the north and the foothills of the Southern Alps to the west. This is more than just a place to borrow books. Inside it features the library, a performance space, technology room, café and lounge, and a wāhi tamariki for younger users. Outside it sits within a speciallydesigned landscape, created to appeal to the senses, and includes outdoor instruments, a musical walk, water features, food gardens, sculptures and works by local artists and schools.

www.kaizon.co.nz

A SUSTAINABLE BUILD Architects Warren and Mahoney designed with sustainability to the fore, creating a highly insulated envelope with a warm roof and intelligent performance membranes, inside and out, controlling moisture. Increasing the solid-wall-to-glazing ratio helped to reduce the energy demands of the building, while the clever louvred façade system allows just the right amount of light inside. The external louvres reduce glare without significantly impacting daylighting on the interior, translating to an 18 percent reduction in cooling load and plant size. Multifunction sensors are used throughout the building to measure light levels, motion, occupancy, humidity, temperature, CO2 /VOC (volatile organic compounds) and energy consumption. The façade is also key to the building’s mixed-mode ventilation, allowing for heat in winter, and cooling in hotter months.

CHARGING AHEAD An Australian-based global electric vehicle charging company JOLT is to roll out free and fast electric vehicle (EV) chargers around New Zealand, from next month.

T

he first chargers will be installed at Mitre 10 stores and retail locations in Christchurch, Auckland, and Wellington this year, to be followed by hundreds more during the next few years. EV drivers will have access to 7kW of free charging per day at JOLT fast chargers, providing about 40 to 50 kilometres of range depending on the type of vehicle. JOLT says that this will help solve the major barriers to the uptake of EVs which are known to include access to charging, cost and range anxiety.

Torque Talk

Which do you prefer? A car with an automatic, or manual transmission?

WITH BEN SELBY

T

here was once a time when both the option of shifting gears yourself or letting the car do it for you equally shared the stage across the New Zealand automotive landscape. Today, things are very different. Like the Sumatran Tiger, the manual gearbox as we know it is an endangered species. One could argue this is partly down to just how good a modern automatic actually is. There is plenty of weight to this as any current dual clutch auto is infinitely quicker and more refined than the equivalent manual.

Also, there is the aspect of our second-hand market. Nearly all of New Zealand’s second-hand imported cars are automatic examples from the likes of Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong, where the congestion of big cities results in real need for an automatic gearbox. Contrast that to Europe where new and used manual cars are far more numerous. I don’t believe the concept of swapping cogs manually will go extinct. It is more likely to be available only as a bespoke option on a select few New Zealand new performance cars aimed at keen drivers.

SEMI SILENT & SUV

BY BEN SELBY

The Toyota Highlander has been a firm favourite for SUV buyers both in the private and fleet sectors for many moons now. The latest generation is the first to incorporate the semi-silent running of hybrid powertrains.

M

y test car was the range topping ZR Limited Hybrid at $74,990. All Highlanders share the same revised 2.5L four-cylinder petrol engine and hybrid combo with 184kW and 242Nm. The new Highlander is much more fluidic than the previous generation. It is also built and styled at Toyota’s US plant in Indiana and New Zealand and Australia are the only right-hand drive markets to get it. It is also 60mm longer, 5mm wider and weighs 75kg less. The ZR Limited gets a Power Tailgate, Leather Trim for the interior doors, a 7-inch Multi-Information Display, Panoramic Sunroof, Sat Nav, Heated and Ventilated Leather seats and a very good JBL Stereo System on top of a comprehensive list of standard kit. It is happiest at a low stress motorway cruise, with the revs low and radar cruise set just so. You have ECO, Normal, Sport and Trail modes on hand. The latter can be used to take your Highlander off the beaten path, though I reckon most will seldom leave tarmac. In summary, there is plenty to like here.

A CLASSY ITALIAN BY BEN SELBY

T

Unveiling a new sports car, such as the Maserati MC20 (above) is always an event.

he Italian trident’s newest mid-engine flagship supercar has arrived in Christchurch and was recently unveiled by local Maserati agents Euromarque at the Christchurch Art Gallery. The vehicle marks the start of an important new chapter for the Maserati brand and is its first all-out supercar since the MC12, which ended production in 2005. “The MC20 is Maserati’s first supercar in over a decade and the beginning of a new direction for the brand while still keeping to its racing roots,” says Euromarque Head of Maserati Sales, Dylan McKenzie. Aside from sporting the textbook

supercar stance, the MC20 sports a collection of numbers which puts it firmly in serious performance bracket. Powered by an F1 derived 3.0L twinturbo V6 engine producing 630HP and 730Nm, it will reach the New Zealand open road speed limit from a standstill in 2.9 seconds and go on to reach 325km/h flat out. McKenzie adds that we should expect the MC20’s powerplant in all future flagship Maserati Trofeo models. “It replaces the outgoing Ferrari derived 3.8L twin-turbo V8 and will be used in all new Trofeo models including the new Grecale SUV,” he says. “Hybrid and full EV variants have also both been announced for the future.”

The MC20 tips the scales at 1500kg thanks to an all-carbon fibre monocoque chassis which not only weighs 100kg on its own, but also provides high torsional and bending stiffness. Slide inside via the MC20’s butterfly doors and you are greeted with a superbly refined cabin, devoid of unnecessary addons. That carbon tub also provides ease of entry and exit, unusual for a supercar like this. Also available as the open top Cielo, the MC20 is sold out until early 2023. Two so far are expected to call Christchurch home, so keep a look out for this handsome Italian thoroughbred on Canterbury roads soon.
