very familiar with food and recipes that kids love. Also two paediatric dietitians were on board, and they are experts in their field, this is what they do. We wrote a lot, it had to be trimmed down!” Moving down south a couple of years ago, Nadia and her family are loving their life on the farm near Arrowtown. “We just slotted right in. Never any thoughts of missing the city, no hesitation. I’ve never been a city person, and I know I could never go back. We are expecting a big snow soon, and we are so enclosed by the mountains.” Their home location also made Nadia’s latest stint on Masterchef that much easier as it was filmed in the beautiful, neighbouring Queenstown. Her experience returning to the show as a judge was in a word - fun. “I love my co judges, they are my buddies. We all knew each other before the show and are good mates. I’ve known Michael for 10 years, and Vaughan lives down here too. We had such a great time on set, just working with mates. The contestants were so lovely, and we all got on so well.” Being back on the show was unsurprisingly a nostalgic experience for Nadia, and she could reflect on how much her life has changed since the last time she was there. “It definitely brought back memories, and maybe made me empathetic as a judge. I was also maybe a bit harder because I wanted to push them. Sometimes as a constestant, you can play it a bit safe, and skim across the surface, not taking any risks. So I was always pushing them, and reminding them that this is your time to shine.” With filming wrapped, Nadia’s schedule is only slightly less busy, with her varied commitments and work taking up a lot of her time, but days spent on the farm are definitely her favourite. “My days are a bit more normal, and I have more days working on the farm. It’s really what I want to do most of the time. I often get stuck behind a computer, but my favourite thing to do is work on the farm.”

adia’s latest project is a new cookbook to add to her catalogue, and this time it’s all about the kids. YUM! is a collection of favourite meals and ideas for feeding the whole family. It covers everything from babies starting solids to older school kids who are fussy when it comes to food. “The reason I put it together was simply because over the last four years I was getting constant requests from parents and caregivers. ‘It would be so cool if you had a book with tips and tricks for cooking for kids.’ Starting from baby age, starting from solids, parents want guidance, they want advice.” Nadia appreciates that parents are often overwhelmed with advice and what’s best when it comes to food and nutrition for their kids. It is a concern parents can face, especially when they have a fussy eater who doesn’t like their vegetables. Being able to offer some sound advice, easy tips and tricks, encouragement and validation is the goal of YUM! And as for Nadia’s kids, they are big fans of the Favourite Butter Chicken, Chicken and Corn Dumplings and Pumpkin Gnocchi. “Most nights I try to do one meal, but a couple of nights a week we have separate meals. I want more exotic meals sometimes, so the other night I did simple cauliflower spinach bacon pasta for the kids. It is so quick and easy, and they love it. Then I did a spicy Vietnamese fish salad for us.” YUM! was a collaborative project that Nadia completed alongside Annabel Ingliss, and paediatric dietitians Jenny Douglas and Lisa Daniels. “It is the first book I have done and not just had me, and it was a really nice process. I shared the recipe development with Annabel, a good friend and recipe developer, and she has three young kids herself so she is

Corpus Medicorum was founded in 2002 by Royal Melbourne Hospital cardiothoracic surgeon and violist Phillip Antippa, and is widely regarded as one of Australia’s premier amateur orchestras. Its current conductor and musical director is Associate Professor Keith Crellin, a noted violist and teacher, and exfounding member of the Australian String Quartet. Corpus Medicorum has toured internationally three times, to St Petersburg Russia in 2014, to Osaka Japan in 2016, and in 2018, to Europe with concerts in Thessaloniki, Milan, and Ljubljana, Slovenia.

We are a lot larger than the norm, with a huge amount of art to browse,” says Kate. The gallery shows contemporary art and sculpture, jewellery and glass. Originating from The Christchurch Art Show, it features some of the artists who exhibit at that event. A wine and coffee bar will open this July. “It really is a special place to visit, enjoy, and discover something special,” says Kate. The current exhibition, chosen for the grand opening, is the “Art Signature Piece”. It features custom-made signature artworks from the gallery’s artists. “We invited our artists to create a signature artwork to celebrate the new space,” says Kate, “how each artist makes their mark is what ‘Signature Pieces’ is all about.” August will see Eketāhuna sculptor and painter, Mark Dimock, feature in the gallery. The website carries paintings currently available, as well as biographies of gallery artists. “We encourage people to sign up online for the newsletter. They’ll be kept up to date on upcoming exhibitions and special events,” says Kate. However, as Christchurch’s most beautiful and welcoming treasure trove of contemporary art, you really must experience it for yourself.

FASHION Amongst ever-evolving trends and styles, fashion muse Josie Wiley brings class and colour to New Zealand fashion as a womenswear buyer for designer clothing store Superette. Metropol writer Nina Tucker catches up with Josie about her journey in the industry and life as a buyer.

fter developing a lust for fashion from New Zealand fashion icon Barbara Lee with whom her mother worked, Josie knew she belonged amongst elaborate and colourful clothes. “I have had a love affair with fashion for as long as I can remember.” While working in Auckland retail, Josie saw a position available at Superette. In a growing team, Josie was able to jump from department to department before developing a liking for buying. Despite a successful career in New Zealand’s fierce fashion industry, Josie once struggled with what others thought of her and her outfits. Recently I attended an International Investment Research Conference in Sydney, with more than 800 other ﬁnancial advice specialists.

lmost all in attendance were very positive about our economic futures, with shipping traffic jams unravelling, globally very high employment numbers, borders reopened and the world becoming vaccinated, regardless of rising interest rates and inflation. The most important conference theme was sticking to fundamentals and having the right investments in the construction of your portfolio. They say 70 percent of customers are there for a tattoo removal, while 30 percent want a cover up of a tattoo. The most common areas that women are having tattoos removed from are the back, neck and finger. Getting rid of ill-fated ink is no quick fix however. Laser tattoo removal technicians recommend at least two months of treatments for complete removal.

We often think accepting chronic pain or a chronic illness will cause us to give up chasing a cure. Actually, the sooner we accept a difficult health diagnosis, the quicker we can become free to pursue healing and a new normal. 2.

ne in five adults suffers from chronic pain. In older people, the number rises to three in five. Most of these people don’t realise they don’t have to settle for a survival-based coexistence with their partner or bury their hopes for success and joy under a mountain of heat packs or duvets. So writes author Karra Eloff, who has recorded her own chronic pain journey in an effort to help others. In Christchurch last month to speak at the New Zealand Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society Conference, Karra is the author of The Chronic Pain Couple: How to be a joyful partner & have a remarkable relationship in spite of chronic pain, released this month by Exisle Publishing. A wife and mother, Karra suffers from spondyloarthritis. A health professional based in Australia, she drew on academic research and her own pursuit of joy in spite of suffering to bring write what she describes as “a lowenergy and practical path to a remarkable new normal, for you and your chosen human/partner”. The managing director and co-founder of two private psychology clinics on the East Coast of Australia, she is also the founder of The Chronic Pain Couple, an organisation that delivers practical support to people with chronic pain and their loved ones. "The chronic pain work I do is because I couldn’t find the information I needed to maintain a passion-filled relationship despite chronic pain,” she says. “I wrote the book that I wish that I had 10 years ago when I was diagnosed.” Chronic illness or pain, according to Karra, need not hold you back from experiencing personal joy and success. It is possible to forge a path to remarkable — to move the dial of a relationship challenged with chronic pain from embattled and exhausted to joyful and passion-filled.

PRACTISE SELF-COMPASSION.

Self-compassion is not the same as self-care. Self-compassion is being kind to yourself like you would be to a close friend experiencing the same health struggles. You’re not broken and you’re not a burden to others. You deserve care and support, make sure you remind yourself of that. 3.

FIND YOUR PEOPLE.

Find the health professionals willing to turn over every rock for answers. Make sure you have a mental health professional on your side too and find a good support group. You don’t have to endure chronic pain on your own.

WHAT IS SPONDYLOARTHRITIS? Spondyloarthritis is a group of arthritis conditions that affects bones in the spine (vertebrae) and nearby joints, causing pain and inflammation. Spondyloarthritis also involves locations where bones connect to muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Symptoms vary between patients but may include: Longstanding low back pain. Back stiffness. Back pain and stiffness are typically worse at night and improve with exercise. Fatigue. Painful swelling of joints. Sausage-like appearance of fingers or toes. Heel pain. Skin and nail changes of psoriasis.

With new mums inundated with the public health message ‘breast is best’, the pressure and feelings of failure are very real. That’s a sentiment that was all too familiar for Julia Daly – a certified lactation consultant, mother of three and paediatric nurse. Research that aims to improve the lives of people living with the experience of disability is now one step closer to creating real, much-needed change right here in Christchurch.

he Canterbury Medical Research Foundation (CMRF) recently announced the recipient of their inaugural Emerging Researcher Fellowship, Dr Johnny Bourke from The Burwood Academy. It is without a doubt a monumental opportunity for Dr Bourke and his team, as he explains. “It is an incredible privilege to receive the CRMF Emerging Researcher Fellowship and a really exciting opportunity to conduct research that I believe will make a meaningful change to people’s lives. “Many of the one in five people in Canterbury who report living with disability, require support workers to live their lives every day. “As a person who lives with high-level paralysis, I’ll often ask people to imagine having a person in your life almost all day and having to ask them to complete almost every task you wish to do. “Without good quality disability support workers, disabled people can’t live all aspects of their lives, from getting dressed

to getting about the community and everything in between. “However, the disability support workforce sector is under increasing pressure. Disability support workers are undervalued and finding good quality support workers is becoming harder and the number of people requiring them is increasing.” Dr Bourke’s research aims to understand what makes a good relationship between disabled people and support workers. It will also encompass wider groups including whanau and service providers. “Having a clear understanding of what works for who can help us to ensure everybody feels valued and supported – from the working conditions for support workers to the quality of life for disabled people. Ultimately, by understanding what works for everybody, we hope to help build a more resilient and positive support worker sector,” Dr Bourke explains. This unique research aligns with CMRF on many levels, and so it is an exciting time for both Burwood Academy and the

CMRF team. Foundation Director Melissa Haberfield says, “We are incredibly proud to be able to support a talented local researcher like Dr Bourke, whose work will undoubtedly have a significant impact on people living with the experience of disability every day. As a charitable organisation that receives no government funding this is only possible thanks to the generosity of our donors who share our vision of improving the health and well-being of our people through investment in health research.” The grant, worth up to $200,000 will be awarded annually to an exceptional Canterbury researcher, who is committed to improving the health and well-being not only of New Zealanders but people all around the world. Over the last 62 years, The Canterbury Medical Research Foundation has awarded more than $32 million in Canterbury-based health research funding.

Cellaring wine at home Wine enthusiasts dream about having their own cellar and often it is easy enough to turn dreams into reality.

home wine cellar may be as simple as a spare hall cupboard, a section of the pantry or the garage, an upcycle sideboard, or as complex as a complete purpose-built room. Before deciding where to put your cellar, think about temperature. Generally wine likes to be stored at between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius, with humidity between 50 and 80 percent. Direct sunlight is bad for wine, so avoid rooms with lots of windows, although if you do plan to store wine for a long period of time, you’ll need a place with little light, enough humidity to keep corks moist, and cool temperatures. Here are some ideas:

Roasted roots soup Serves 2 adults + 2-3 children Prep time 15 minutes Cook time 1 hour 10 minutes

Ingredients 1kg pumpkin, skin on, seeds removed 500g orange kūmara, peeled 3 carrots, peeled 1 large onion, diced 2 cloves garlic, roughly chopped

2 teaspoons mild curry powder 400g can coconut milk or cream 500ml homemade (or salt-reduced) chicken or vegetable stock

Method Preheat oven to 200°C and line a tray with baking paper. Cut the pumpkin, kūmara and carrots into 5cm chunks. Toss with a good drizzle of olive oil on prepared tray and roast for about 1 hour, or until very tender. Turn halfway through cooking to ensure even colouring. Heat a good drizzle of olive oil in a large pot over a medium heat. Add onion and cook gently for about 8 minutes until just starting to colour. Stir often to prevent catching and turn down the heat if cooking too quickly (you want to cook long and slow to bring out the natural sweetness of the onions). Add garlic and curry powder and cook, stirring, for another minute.

Sipping a sauvignon takes on a whole new meaning when we’re talking about cabernet sauvignon.

rguably the most widely planted red grape variety, cabernet sauvignon is many people’s first venture into the world of red wine. Why red? Research suggests that drinking an occasional glass of red wine is good for you. It provides antioxidants, may promote longevity, and can help protect against heart disease and harmful inflammation, in addition to having higher levels of antioxidants than white wine. Let’s not forget it tastes good, or in some instances amazing. The list of reds is lengthy, and there’s nothing like a drop of montepulciano from Italy, a French merlot, pinot noir or cabernet sauvignon from Bordeaux, Bergerac, Cahors and Languedoc-Roussillon, or syrah, cabernet franc and gamay, most of which are also grown in New Zealand. If you’re not used to reds, here are a few suggestions to guide your taste buds:

CABERNET SAUVIGNON A full-bodied red wine with dark fruit flavours such as black cherry, blackberry, and blackcurrant. It also has savoury notes of spice and black pepper. Aroma notes include vanilla, clove and green pepper.

SYRAH/SHIRAZ Dark, full-bodied wines with dark fruit flavours ranging from sweet blueberry to savoury black olive. Widely grown in Australia where it is called shiraz, it has a spicy peppery aftertaste.

PINOT NOIR A dry, lighter red wine, typically pinot noir has complex flavours that include cherry, raspberry, mushroom and forest floor, plus vanilla and baking spice when aged in French oak.

MERLOT Merlot is a medium varietal best known for its red-fruit flavours, such as cherry, plum and raspberry, easydrinking tannins and super-soft finish.

MONTEPULCIANO Montepulciano is known for its deep colour, powerful tannins, and strong aromas and flavours. Imagine hints of oregano, pepper, tobacco, and black fruits in a more rustic style wine.

Curtains are a great way to decorate your space, as well as increase warmth and privacy. If you are looking to purchase new curtains, here are a few tips and tricks.

LOOK AND FEEL The curtains you choose will change the mood of the room that they go in. Ask yourself a few questions to figure out what you are wanting. A luxurious, romantic feel? Curtains that puddle on the ground may be the right look for you. A cleaner look? Then opt for curtains that graze the floor.

ROOM TO ROOM There's no need to match all of the curtains in your house. For example, in the bedroom, you may opt for blackout lining for better sleep, whereas in living rooms, this probably isn’t necessary. Even if your curtains don’t all match, there are still ways to ensure that your home looks cohesive by using similar materials, patterns, or colors.

ALL ABOUT HEIGHT A great trick is to hang curtains as high as possible to draw the eye upward. Position them at least one-half to two-thirds of the distance between the top of the window frame and the ceiling. This will create the illusion of a higher ceiling and an overall bigger room.

LINING ALWAYS If you are getting custom curtains made, try and get them lined. The sun can fade and damage curtains over time so it's worth protecting your investment by adding a fabric liner. You can also add extra warmth with thermal lining and even additional soundproofing if you live in a noisy area.

After two decades of cool greys and whites being the preferred neutrals, there has been a sharp shift.

oday, it’s warmer taupes and greiges such as Resene Double Thorndon Cream, Resene Cougar and Resene Craigieburn that have skyrocketed in popularity as the base hues of choice for grounding colour schemes. And it’s understandable; as our lives become increasingly complicated and people have been forced to spend more time at home, it’s natural for us to seek out colours that we find comforting and soothing. Taupe and greige are undeniably cosy and thus fit the bill perfectly. Green is another colour that has become overwhelming popular in the past few years. It was a cool minty version that first re-emerged as a decorating trend – a variation which was then replaced by

soft, silvery sage. But just like neutrals, the most vogue versions are warmer ones, especially those with an olive, army or cargo green character to them such as Resene Half Quarter Karaka, Resene Half Karaka and Resene Evolution. This cosy lounge combines both today’s trending taupes and greens into a gorgeous tonal package. The stage (and colour palette) is set by the show-stealing mural, which is inspired by a swirly marble. But rather than painting it all taupes or all greens, a tide-line approach has been taken across the centre of the wall, where the top half has been kept neutral and the bottom half features deeper, greener tones. The effect not only creates more interest and visually grounds the space, it also offers two different palettes to accessorise the space with.

Cool beans While there are many espresso machines to choose from, Breville’s latest offering – the Express Impress makes drinking cafe-quality coffees at home extremely simple. Metropol’s over-caffeinated gadget guru Ian Knott goes without sleep for about a month.

spend too much on coffee. Long gone are the days when you could get a decent fix for $3.50. Most are in the $7$10 range these days and it soon adds up if you’re grabbing even just one a day. So when the chance to review the Breville Express Impress came up, my tastebuds, and more importantly my bank account, got excited. The Express Impress takes a lot of the manual guesswork out of making a good coffee. It remembers the favoured dosage and grinds the beans from the hopper to suit. As any barista will tell you, there is an art to tamping the grinds down. The correct pressure and a slight seven degree twist is what’s required. A tamping arm on the side of the machine provides the perfect

tamp, as easy as pulling the handle on a slot-machine. A double extraction head then pours a single or double shot of perfect syrupy espresso into a shot glass or directly into your cup, which can be pre-warmed on the heated top of the machine. You still need to do your milk manually with the provided milk jug, but I find this all part of the fun. Do your milk just right and you feel like you’ve earned your coffee. There are some fantastic milk and latte art tutorials on YouTube, be sure to check them out. For a shade under $1000, the Express Impress will pay for itself in no time, even if you are a casual cafe customer. And it’s clever enough to remember just how you like your favourite brew.

A good night’s sleep is vital for humans to function properly, and given most of us spend one third of our lives in bed, it is essential to invest in the very best.

Bathroom design and flair Renovating a bathroom takes teamwork and know-how.

hile Kiwis are renowned for their DIY abilities, sometimes it pays to have experts on the job. Bathroom revamping is one area where specialist expertise will save time, money and stress. Leading the field in Christchurch, with more than 40 years’ experience in the business, is family owned and operated Butterfield Bathrooms. They’ve moved out of

the garage and now operate from premises at 223a Annex Road, in Middleton. Martin, who hails from Cornwall, will discuss each client’s vision, do a full scope, detailed design and elevation with 3D drawings, then pull it all together. “He’s incredibly passionate about colours and styles, and expert in fixtures and fittings - which really make a bathroom. Our designs come without the cost of an architect’s plan, as it’s part of our package. Project manager Nathan Tunnah is expert at juggling multiple assignments. “He’s a qualified builder and passionate colour consultant,” says Guy.

The team also includes four builders, a plasterer, and a painter, and a work partnership with RJ Plumbing. “Our locked-in efficient weekly system has all our tradesmen pre-booked. We can get wall linings and timber promptly, as suppliers always have our required amounts. Three weeks to complete a vinyl bathroom is realistic,” says Guy. “We provide real comparative costs, and explain our full package from design right the way through, with no obligation.”

A win for us all

It feels like we’ve passed a milestone once we get past the shortest day, but I often find that’s when the truly cold weather arrives.

It has been great to hear the stories of local businesses beginning to notice positive effects to trade, as a result of the centre being operational.

aving four distinct seasons, however, is one of the things I love about living in Christchurch. With the July school holidays about to start there are some fantastic events happening across the city that are well worth braving the cold for. The Winter Fireworks Spectacular at New Brighton on Saturday 9 July will set things off with a real bang. Moving this event to winter really does make sense, with the earlier time so much easier for families. We’re also really fortunate to have KidsFest in our city offering hundreds of activities, workshops and events to keep our younger folk entertained, informed and educated.

This two-week festival has been running for three decades and it’s the envy of towns and cities across the country. A newer event on the winter calendar, and a chance to showcase our magnificent Christchurch Town Hall to a younger audience, is the Go Live Festival later this month. Two nights of concerts for all ages will be featuring some incredible homegrown musical talent. So, while it might be cold outside there is a real buzz about our city in winter. I suggest that you invite family, friends and even colleagues to layer up and enjoy some of what’s on offer in our amazing city.

Shared transport impact

The biggest challenge facing Christchurch businesses is the labour shortage. This is one of the economic factors contributing to inflation, which we are all experiencing.

The impact of shared transport on two different Christchurch communities could determine transport goals for New Zealand

hristchurchNZ has been working on two initiatives to help reduce the impact of the shortages. Last week we launched the PowerUp campaign, designed to inform, inspire, and connect women on their career journeys, with a focus on those who have been unemployed for extended periods of time. Following a labour market hui we held with local Canterbury businesses at the end of 2021, women were identified as one group who are currently underemployed and underutilised so PowerUp was designed to support women into work. The insights of that industry hui also heavily influenced the delivery of an advocacy paper around the skills shortage. Alongside the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of

Commerce, we made the case for more skilled migration that focused on the most severely affected industry sectors — manufacturing and hi-tech. These two sectors are strategically important due to their significant number of high-value jobs, export revenue, growth potential and contribution to regional prosperity. The advocacy paper called on Government to approve 5500 additional skilled migrant visas in those sectors over the next 12 months. Having shown the need, we recruited and supported industry spokespeople as we made our pitch to business reporters, resulting in national stories in NBR, RNZ, and BusinessDesk, which may yet move the Government’s position.

’m leading a team of researchers studing two National Science Challenges – Ageing Well and Healthier Lives – to understand the impact of shared transport options into a lifestyle village and a community housing trust on those communities. Current transport systems and accessibility are not sustainable due to inequity of accessibility, greenhouse gas emissions and congestion. The study aims to answer the question: If people share vehicles, what impact does that have on them, their mobility and wellbeing? When people share vehicles, they may make a slightly better decision, which produces good outcomes for climate emissions. They may decide to walk or take the bus.

Or, if they take the car, they may choose to do more on the journey. However, we don’t want those decisions to be at the expense of wellbeing. Shared fleets of vehicles are often electric and used more often; meaning they are replaced earlier, tend to be safer and cleaner and result in people not worrying about on-road or maintenance costs – all leading to positive wellbeing. Most of those living in the lifestyle village were fairly affluent and more active, they still felt inadequate transport limited their ability to do all the things they wanted, while cost posed the biggest barrier for those in the community trust. The study has been running for over a year, with another 2.5 years to go.

Be it emotional or analytical, much is made of the reasons people transact real estate. When purchasing or deciding to purchase there is often robust debate about the rationale for someone’s decisions. The parties involved can be vendors, buyers, real estate consultants, lawyers, valuers, building inspectors and can now include digital valuation systems. Everyone wants to play a part, as well as have a say, and it’s a crowded and often confusing space. If it’s an investment property, there’s often a predetermined strategy based on the financial benefits or otherwise of the purchase, and this can be seen in a ‘dollars and cents’, ‘return versus costs’ framework. People usually know the rules. If they spend too much on the purchase or during renovation and they don’t sell for a certain amount, then the end result will often be disappointment. You see this particular scenario played out most weeks, however the market we have enjoyed over the past 18 months saw the reverse of this: astronomical figures achieved regardless of the initial cost of the property and subsequent investment. But not everything is analytical. In fact, some of the biggest motivations for people to buy or sell are deeply emotional and might make sense only to them. Examples I’ve noted over the years have included the purchase of neighboring properties.

The disparaging ‘nosey neighbor’ label gets bandied about more than I care for, but I’ve seen significant prices paid by neighbors who wanted to protect boundaries or views, or wanted other family members to live close by. They believed in the value of the location and in some cases had waited patiently for the opportunity. Owners that chose to sell at auction often achieved wonderful premiums because of this. Another emotional factor I’ve witnessed is the acrimonious split, where you see two common scenarios: the ‘I don’t care because I’m off to a better life’ and the ‘I’ll fight you every step of the way because I feel betrayed and belittled’. The skill required to navigate these situations with care and professionalism isn’t the domain of everyone and I’d always suggest doing significant due diligence to find a professional who has the skill to look after all parties whilst delivering the best result, because there may be an emotional minefield ahead. And before you think it can’t be done, it can; I’ve seen it. But for me, perhaps the most emotional of all sales transactions are the ones involving couples who – having lived long and wonderful lives together – must sell to move into supportive care. You walk through properties full of nostalgic memories, photos, books, furniture, mementoes and ‘stuff’. The stuff of life and you realize on their behalf how hard it is. That’s when emotion really comes to the fore. In one example that comes to mind, I had the enormous privilege of meeting a couple that had lived a full

and valued life, but it was time to move. They worry, have they left it too late? And (this is common) I worry that we have a deadline hanging over us requiring a sale by a certain date so they can move to the residential village. Their friends worry about auctioning, which we believed was the best process due to the deadlines just mentioned – and the nature of their property – and their family worry about all the things families lose sleep over when they have elderly parents. Economics are important, of course, but the emotional factors in all of this are much more important. So why share this? It could be that I want our elderly clients to move safely and with dignity to their new home. It could be because my own parents are now at that age and although they tell me in no uncertain terms that they are never moving, I worry every winter. Or it could be that no matter what any of us think, people will make their own decisions. It might be purely financially driven or it might be deeply emotional. It’s important to find out which it is before you wade in. And for real estate professionals working in this space, know what’s best, do that and more, and remember that life is a mixture of facts and feelings.

Greater design oversight needed An international architect and urban planning specialist is calling for the reinstatement of a century-old government agency to provide strategic design oversight as New Zealand’s largest cities enter a period of rapid housing intensification.

he position of “Government Architect”, which headed the Ministry of Works and Development’s architectural division, was disestablished 20 years ago when the ministry was closed. Patrick Sloan, founder of Sloan Architects and whose 30-year career includes over 150 projects in 20 countries, says historically the Government Architect’s role was to advise government on all aspects of architecture, building and the built environment, including policies for the design of and expenditure on governmentfunded and operated facilities.

He says from August, the Resource Management (Enabling Housing Supply and Other Matters) bill will require councils to allow townhouses of up to three storeys with up to three dwellings on almost all residential sites in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Tauranga, and Hamilton, without the need for resource consent. Modelling shows the new medium density rules could see more than 100,000 new dwellings built in the next eight years. Sloan says adding thousands of three level residential dwellings in our major centres is not without risk. “Within the coming weeks we will see the start of an urban ‘gold rush’,

with property developers able to take advantage of new housing density rules. “The risk is that we will see substandard developments proceed that make little or no contribution to the neighbourhoods and communities that we all live in. “Architectural merit isn’t limited to how a building appears or performs. It’s also about having a positive impact on the character of our streets and the public realm, and the safeguarding of a shared urban identity. “What we need is visionary thinking and design leadership that looks decades into the future – this would come from the Government Architect.”

Christchurch’s historic Lancaster Park reopened last month as an open green community recreational space and sports fields.

ormerly home to Lancaster Park stadium, the opening marked the end of a nine-month redevelopment. The budget for the redevelopment following the demolition of the grandstands is $11.7 million and the total cost of the redevelopment to date (excluding the memorial gates restoration) is $4.8 million. Ongoing development comprises more community amenities on the park, including buildings, plantings, a playground and a multi-media package to capture its history.

Keeping Antarctica green New Zealanders have voted to keep Scott Base the same green it has been since 1965.

he iconic colour received 4514 votes from the 10,830 Kiwis and honorary penguins that made the choice between green, orange and blue. Orange — or rescue orange as it was dubbed by supporters keen to keep people safe and save the planet — came second with 3742 votes, then blue with 2574 votes. The vote allowed our Antarctic community and New Zealanders to be part of the design process during the Scott Base Redevelopment, which will see the current, aging buildings replaced with a fit-for-purpose base powered by 97 percent

renewable energy. This means supporting science there for another 50+ years. “The colour will link two eras of New Zealand science,” said project director Jon Ager. “The special connection that Kiwis have with Scott Base has been abundantly clear during the vote. We will move towards construction knowing people are behind us and, one day, everyone that voted will be able to say: I helped to shape Scott Base.”

The vote opened during an Antarctica-themed Science Week in primary schools, which saw classrooms talking to the Scott Base overwintering crew, learning from polar scientists and undertaking their own experiments. Votes came in from the length of the country but it was Canterbury — home of the Antarctic Gateway city of Christchurch, and Timaru where the new base will be built — which rallied around the vote, with 2475 people having their say about the colour of Scott Base. Not far behind, 2037 people adopted Antarctica as their postcode; Auckland contributed 2021 votes, Wellington 1432, Waikato 556 and Otago 546 votes.

hen it comes to buying or selling a home, drains are not necessarily something many of us consider – but we probably should. “Damaged drains are a constant problem for both buyers and sellers in the greater Christchurch area,” explains Josh Mackey, owner of MHR Drainage. “Emergency drainage repairs carried out following the earthquakes, which were only ever designed to be temporary, may well be failing now.
