FROM THE EDITOR LYNDA PAPESCH
Democracy One of the many joys of living in New Zealand is that it is a democracy. A simple definition of democracy is government by the people, or rather a government in which the NATIONAL MULTI-AWARD WINNERS 2013 - 2019
supreme power is vested in the people, and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation, usually involving periodically held free elections. Closely linked to the merit of democratic government is the prevention of abuse of political power. Political dictatorship should never happen, human rights should be protected, and people should have freedom of speech so long as the latter is morally responsible. Democracy does slow decision-making while various relevant parties are consulted, yet that’s a small price to pay. At the end of the day, if the people don’t like something, they can work to change
it, unlike in Russia where autocracy leaves the people with little or no choice. choice. The Russia/Ukraine conflict is an example of autocracy trying to take over democracy, and much of the civilised world is quite rightly reacting with abhorrence. The people of Russia could make a stand (they’ve done it before, wiping out their autocratic monarchy), but it’s highly unlikely they’ll take a stand against Vladimir Putin. Situations like this should make us even more grateful for New Zealand’s democracy, and make the most of it. Speak out, seek change and take action against perceived wrongs. And don’t take it for granted.

Taking a New Path Christchurch Deputy Mayor Andrew Turner’s decision to exit local body politics at this year’s October elections surprised many. Metropol editor Lynda Papesch looks back on his career and at his path ahead.
T
aking time out to enjoy life is at the forefront of Andrew Turner’s thoughts these days. After October, Christchurch’s deputy mayor will have time on his hands, for strolls on the beach with two small dogs, and increased flexibility for new challenges. His exit is still four months away, but he’s already started thinking about his future. He’s eager to use the experience gained, both at the Christchurch City Council and sitting on various boards and trusts including CCHL and ChristchurchNZ, to pursue other governance roles. “I’m keen to continue to contribute to the life of the city, but there is a breadth of opportunity outside of Christchurch which is also attractive,” he says. “The ideal for me would be a combination of governance roles, maybe some advisory or contract work, and the ability to use my experience to contribute to Christchurch and to New Zealand. Exactly what that looks like remains to be seen, although there are some

conversations already under way and I’m looking forward to some exciting opportunities ahead. “I’m looking forward to continuing to enjoy living in Lyttelton, maybe even spending a bit more time there, and with [partner] Glen and our two small fluffy dogs.
His decision to bow out of council surprised some, particularly given some expectation that Andrew would run for the mayoralty in 2022. “I deliberately took time out during summer to think about what the next period of my life could look like, taking valuable and honest advice from trusted
“I deliberately took time out during summer to think about what the next period of my life could look like, taking valuable and honest advice from trusted people close to me.” Andrew met Glen while visiting Christchurch in 1997, and this year they’re celebrating their 25th anniversary. “It’s fair to say he provided both the incentive and the opportunity to settle here in Christchurch,” Andrew says. “We have lived here permanently since 1998, and have been in Lyttelton since 2003.”
people close to me. These considerations led to my decision not to contest the next election,” he explains. “Being elected and playing a full role for the last 12 years has been a huge privilege and immensely enjoyable, yet also timeconsuming, taxing and at times very challenging.
one on one
LOOKING BACK
“It’s time to move on. I will be 55 this year, and will soon enjoy having the time and flexibility to do things that being an elected member simply doesn’t allow for.” He looks back proudly on achievements during his time, such as keeping the council’s finances and budgets under control during earthquake recovery and regeneration, a successful settlement of council’s earthquake insurance claim, and the rebuild and betterment of many council facilities and infrastructure. “I have loved being an effective representative for Banks Peninsula, and have built some great relationships along the journey. Resolving wastewater disposal issues for Lyttelton and Akaroa harbours, the upgrade of the Diamond Harbour wharf, implementation of the Lyttelton Master Plan, the acquisition, design and completion of Albion Square, the rebuild of the Lyttelton swimming pool, and the investment in the Lyttelton cruise berth are particular local highlights for me.”
ADVICE TO ASPIRING COUNCILLORS 1. These are roles not jobs, and they are all-consuming. It’s not that you work as a councillor - you are a councillor. Think about the very public nature of the role, and its effect on you, your family and those close to you. 2. People sometimes assume that being a councillor is a part-time role. I often work 50-60 hours a week. Ensure you have time to genuinely commit. It is not a 9-5 commitment - the phone can ring, and meetings and urgent issues can arise any time, day or night. 3. The breadth of the role and the responsibility are also huge. These make the role interesting, but don’t underestimate the huge amount of information, reading and preparation involved for meetings, as well as meeting attendance. 4. If elected, make time to ensure worklife balance. I regularly go to the gym, go for runs, and maintain an active and rewarding social life. This keeps me fit and healthy, and engaged with people outside of work, but requires deliberate planning.
Andrew’s career has spanned hospitality, sales and marketing, business development, retail, small business ownership, property development, local government, and governance. Born in the United Kingdom, he grew up in York, studied in Nottingham, then lived in Brighton and worked in London prior to heading for Sydney. While based in Sydney, he worked on a three month contract in Christchurch, and enjoyed it so much he returned regularly, moving here in 1998 after meeting his partner Glen. The couple moved to Lyttelton in 2003, buying and refurbishing the Empire Hotel building, including reinstating a hospitality and boutique accommodation business, and establishing the Empire General Store. Andrew’s local body career began when he was elected to the Lyttelton Harbour Business Association, and then became its Chair, leading it through the challenging earthquake period. “It was that work that led to suggestions I should run for election to the Community Board, which I did successfully in 2010. That then led to the opportunity to be successfully elected to represent the Banks Peninsula ward on the Christchurch City Council for the first time in 2013, and to be appointed deputy mayor in 2016.

The Fellows were selected based on their commitment to their communities, standout creative abilities, record of leadership, incredible talent, and their desire to pursue a career in aerospace.

Whilst our expectations on auction day were high, the result Cameron achieved for us blew us away..... far beyond what we could have ever hoped. escribed as a unique floorshow experience of song, dance and cirque acts, mixed with a sprinkle of delightful tongue-incheek items, Cabaret Einhundert (the word Einhundert translates to 100) celebrates 100 years of music, spanning eras from the 20s and 30s through to today. By the Silhouette Academy on June 18 and 19, it promises to be a show packed with energy, fabulous costumes and unforgettable music. Kate Limuloa of Silhouette Studios NZ says that cabaret is rooted in French and German culture. “It’s that strong Western-European influence that makes for such a fantastic theatre experience.” Kate is the Director for Einhundert, which comprises 30 performers, from ages 10 to 18. “There is lots of partnering work due to a strong male representation. It is a visual feast, but also a feast for all the senses.” Kate may be referring to the fact that the audience can enjoy charcuterie style platters throughout the show, while sipping their favourite tipple. “The food is included in the ticket price, while beverages are BYO, so audiences can sit back, relax and feel that distinctive atmosphere only found in an authentic cabaret floorshow.” The Silhouette Academy Training Programme was launched in 2021 with its aim to provide a safe environment for young dancers to train in performance for the corporate sector. “From here, they can explore a career working in the business world, cruise ships or acrobatic performance, such as Cirque du Soleil,” Kate explains. “I love the idea of people being aware of this programme – to be able to see what our students are doing. This is the only programme of its kind in New Zealand, and I love passing on what I have learnt to enable my students to forge artistically rewarding careers in performance.” Bookings www.silhouettestudios.co.nz

uring and after the Covid-19 lockdowns, one positive effect on the Aotearoa community is that it has forced many people to consider what is most important in life, Sheerin says. This includes being able to slow down the pace of people’s lives, connect to their roots, the land, animals, birds, and the people around them. Birds are especially important to New Zealand’s national identity, she believes. “Each of the wildlife interpretations in the new rejuvenate mural in Tahuna (Queenstown) are in some way a representation of my own journey to better health. “After the pandemic hit, I realised a lot of the stuff I was dealing with was happening to the wider community. “The mural aims to inspire empathy and erase the stigma surrounding mental health issues. These messages are portrayed through the inspiration of Aotearoa’s unique taonga wildlife. “One of the birds in the mural, Noah the Moa, is asking for reconnection, growth and gratitude. The second, Karma Kiwi, requests love and kindness and the third, Balance Bee, requires balance and nutrition. The Rejuvenate mural was painted in recognition of The Key to Life Charitable Trust, which was founded by mental health supporter Mike King. The trust believes it is time to stop throwing negatives at the problem of suicide and to start throwing positives at the solutions. Its team works with mental health professionals, service providers, business leaders and those in the community to normalise what is deemed ‘abnormal’ by current social perceptions. “We believe it is possible to reverse the population trends of depression and suicide by effecting a positive social change,” says King.
ABOUT THE BIRDS Noah the moa “An interpretation of our now-extinct flightless bird and a lost treasure; the moa, it reminds us to express gratitude for what we do have before it’s too late,” says Sherrin. “Concerns about how to look after our mental health during times of uncertainty and isolation is of utmost importance since the Covid-19 pandemic swept across our planet. How do we look after ourselves and our loved ones?” Karma Kiwi “A representation of this psychological journey. She is calm, grounded and is being kind to herself; taking the time to slow down, watch her thoughts and emotions, and cultivating love of self which will inevitably radiate out to help others.” Balance Bee “This incredible flying insect not only gives us delicious honey but of course pollinates our flowers and plants, helping us grow food; keeping us happy and healthy human beings. She is happy, sets an example and has the world in her hands, respecting the balance of life and that every individual matters and makes a difference no matter the size.”

n fact, that purr of the V8 motor, almost cat-like, has been a statement on the roads for 100 years - 2022 marks the Jaguar’s centenary. From a James Bond car chase in No Time to Die, to owners such as Queen Elizabeth and many a rock star, Jags are like royalty. At The Purrfect Ride, a new Canterbury limousine service, Jags make up the fleet of five. Owners Heather-Leigh Cumming and Allen Cross (pictured bottom right) say Jaguars are such a smooth ride you don’t feel the engine rev at the lights. They have also made a comeback into racing. The couple’s models span four decades and can be spotted about town with the silver Jaguar emblem on the bonnet in pouncing pose, known as the leaper. Deciding to name them after flowers, their 1974 Chocolate Daisy, is rich and racy. For something blue, there is the 1988 Blue Bell. Smart in white is 2002 Ben Ben - with extra stretch, big doors to accommodate bridal gowns, and privacy windows. Also in white are the sleek 1974 Margarita, and 1973 Lilly - she has a

Jags are the perfect ride from stag nights to mid-winter Christmas functions. “We get creative with clients and treat them like family,” says HeatherLeigh. “People can have a whole experience, think drinks and chocolate-dipped strawberries during wedding photo shoots or during the ride to the school ball. “After our drives to Methven you climb from a warm car into hot pools, and we will shout the massage. “We work in with local companies such as Alice in Putterland mini golf. And giving back to the community is especially important. “Making memories is the key,” she adds. “It could be a Sunday drive for a Grandad who used to own one. It is never too cold to be taken out in a Jag and relax like a cat!” Their own felines have even been spied having a posh catnap on the dashboard – all engines purring. Winter weekends in North Canterbury Close enough to the city makes it ideal for a day trip, a couple of nights away, or just a relaxing Sunday drive. Whether you’re after a relaxing, indulgent break of wineries, award-winning eateries, day spas, adventure or shopping for a new wardrobe, North Canterbury has it all. Here are a few of suggestions from Metropol, for your next winter trip to the region.
Shop For those that love a good shop, North Canterbury offers a unique shopping experience and the perfect way to spend an afternoon. You’ll find fashion boutiques with beautiful clothes to add to your wardrobe, as well as homeware shops, children’s stores and handcrafted goods.
Wine Discover a boutique wine region that may not be the largest, but sure produces some award-winning wines, made by passionate experts. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Southern Alps, a long lunch or wine tasting in one of the beautiful wineries is always a good idea.
Dine A day out and about requires fuel and delicious fuel at that. Luckily the North Canterbury towns are home to exceptional eateries and foodie delights. From cosy cafes to riverside bars and of course winery restaurants, there is something for every occasion and every taste.
Relax A great selection of day spas to enjoy across the district, make it not only the perfect way to relax but also the perfect way to warm up this winter. Make a day of it and book your treatment ahead, followed by a nice meal, or shop around afterward. Pampering at its best.

Great food and entertainment The success of a club often rests with what it offers its local community.
W
hen it comes to hospitality, entertainment and social activities, the Kaiapoi Club has been an integral part of the Kaiapoi community for more than 130 years. It’s not a club that rests on its laurels of established longevity. “We are always looking for new activities, for new ways to attract different age groups and families to the club,” says manager, Trudi Marshall. Indeed, the variety of activities offered to club members is very wide. Billiards, cards, creative arts, darts, fishing, golf and indoor and outdoor bowls are just some of the many group pastimes available. Of course, the club has bars and restaurants as well – all extremely popular, especially on Housie and Quiz evenings. “We really want the local community to know that our Bistro restaurant is open to the public for meals,” says Trudi. “Diners do not have to be members, so it’s a great venue for family dining, both in the evening and at lunch time. There is an excellent range of both main and light meals to suit both adults and children.” A feature of the Kaiapoi Club is the musical shows it offers. “We have put on Abba and Queen Tribute shows and are working on an Elton John one,” explains Trudi. “These shows have certainly brought in the crowds with people itching to have an enjoyable time post Covid-19,” she adds.

Where there’s a will… Accidents and illness happen, and life changes daily with sunrise and sunset. Being prepared for unexpected change, such as a death in the family, can often make it easier for those left to move forward.
“L
eaving this world without a clear legal will can create chaos for loved ones left to sort things out, and they might not guess correctly what you wanted,” says Pegasus Bay Law director Robyn Loversidge. “Don’t leave it to chance. The worst case scenario is that your legacy is a family feud. “Making a will takes the burden from your family and sets out your wishes. You can leave sentimental items to the people you want to have them, and can protect minor beneficiaries.” Robyn says wills should also be updated regularly, and she recommends every five years to reflect life’s changes such
as getting married, buying a house and starting a family. She also advises putting enduring powers of attorney into place while you can choose who is best to assist you if you are no longer capable of making your own decisions. Easily accessed in Christchurch and Kaiapoi, the team at Pegasus Bay Law can be reached by calling the Christchurch office on 03 386 2211, the Kaiapoi office 03 928 1215, emailing reception@pegasusbaylaw.co.nz or visiting the website below.

Keeping your valuables safe “As good as gold” is a favourite saying for Kiwis, and no wonder.
T
he love of gold runs through our veins just as it runs through the quartz veins of Otago schist. Driven by rapidly rising inflation, higher interest rates, and unexpected geopolitical risk, gold is once again king of the hill. Currently increasing in value at a significant rate, gold stood out as an effective hedge in the first quarter of 2022, leaping eight percent. This is its best performance since the second quarter of 2020 according to a report by the World Gold Council. A further two percent rise in March sees gold as among the best performing assets amidst significant weakness in both equity and bond markets. In a period marked
by increased economic uncertainty and increased volatility, gold is again proving a reliable source of diversification and wealth preservation. “Gold has historically performed well amid high inflation,” says Jerome Concisom, CEO of Commonwealth Vault in Christchurch. “In years when inflation has been higher than three percent, gold’s price increased on average 14 percent. Current rapidly rising inflation and unexpected geopolitical risks more than offset the drag from higher nominal rates. Our performance here in Christchurch mirrors international demand for gold, and interest is not fading. We are finding demand is still strong.”
Commonwealth Vault is delighted to help anyone who is interested in purchasing gold and silver products, with a good range to choose from. The company also offers an extensive range of safe deposit boxes for silver and gold. “Our purchasers usually also store with us for complete peace of mind. Most people are not aware that household insurance generally does not cover gold stored at home. Purchase and storage with us is simple and safe,” says Jerome. Visit the vault at 152 Oxford Terrace or call Kent Galpin on 0800 222 883 for inquiries about bullion and storage.

The ultimate list of reasons to visit North Canterbury’s Hurunui region is here. The hot pools and Hanmer village are obvious destinations, but there are also other treasures to discover.
V
isit Hurunui launched an online campaign in April and called on local tourism operators, residents and visitors to share their favourite reasons for visiting one of New Zealand’s best-kept secrets. Visit Hurunui marketing manager Shane Adcock says they were overwhelmed with submissions. “We received more than 500 reasons, ranging from the cute and

quirky to the nostalgic. “What came through all the submissions was that many Kiwis have grown up visiting Hurunui and they’ve created – and continue to create - special memories across generations.” Shane says he is really grateful that people were willing to share their favourite holiday, walking, coffee or fishing spots because he knows just how much these places mean to people.

nd when there is mulled wine to sip while enjoying the fire’s ambiance and warmth, it really doesn’t get much better. This is all on offer in the picturesque restored villa in Culverden that houses Red Post Cafe. The Prenzel mulled wine comes as either alcoholic or non-alcoholic, so drivers don’t have to miss out on the special winter experience and atmosphere. Winter brings other “warmers” to the cafe’s menu with delicious homemade cottage pie and sausage rolls and a range of delicious soups such as seafood chowder, pumpkin soup, curried kumara soup or leek and potato soup. It’s the variety of its dishes and baked goods that are the hallmark of this popular cafe and why it is such an inviting place to stop at for breakfast or lunch or a snack and great coffee. Every dietary requirement is catered for – vegetarian, vegan, gluten or dairy free and Keto. Customers often exclaim about the astonishing range of choices in the cabinets. Owners Trent and Carolyn Allison say that everything is made with love and a genuine desire for there to be an option for everyone. winter quilts Quilted puffer jackets are the new winter fashion trend, yet the gorgeous style will double as a staple for your wardrobe, and an investment piece even after the trend diminishes.
A
well-favoured technique amongst top designers recently, quilted shorts, skirts, and dresses have emerged from such collections of Celine and Dior, cementing the style in this year’s trends. The concept of the quilted coat makes for an easy outfit finisher, with fun designs and stitching adding personality to your ensemble so little else is needed. Opt for a boxy fit for that oversized, off-duty look, or go more fitted for class and poise. Consider beige, khaki and tan tones to match your winter wardrobe and create a sophisticated look, without sacrificing warmth and practicality. Invest in both a quilted puffer jacket and vest to ensure you have options whatever the occasion or weather.

Glowing skin all winter long We all want to have luminous skin that is so dewy it gleams, as nothing compares to that healthy, glowy look.
S
ince the pandemic, we are more focused on personal wellness and part of that equation is how healthy, happy and rested we look on the outside. It’s not necessary to erase a decade from your face or have tons of filler added, but you can instead use subtle cosmetic ‘tweakments’ to tune up your complexion. Several variables can make a person’s face look younger or older such as skin texture, tone, and colour, as well as wrinkles, loss of volume, and sagging. The last of those—sagging—happens because collagen, the structural support of your skin, diminishes over time. In these busy times, people want effective treatments, with little to no downtime, that are relatively pain-free
so they can continue on with their daily activities. EndyMed Intensif is a treatment that is ideal for stimulating collagen production to brighten skin, reduce hyperpigmentation, improve skin texture, smooth wrinkles and treat acne scarring. EndyMed uses the most advanced radiofrequency technology to deliver heat deep into the skin using gold-plated needles to stimulate the production of new collagen. The unique gold-plated tapered needles require fewer passes per treatment, shorter treatment times, and greater patient comfort. Book your glow-up treatment today. EndyMed Intensif is available exclusively at the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic.

A hair and beauty destination Choosing just the right hair and beauty salon is so important.
W
hether it is for hair removal or hairdressing, micro-needling and dermaplaning, or injectables, you need to feel comfortable, relaxed and confident you are in safe hands. Le Plaisir is a relaxed, peaceful, happy environment that clients love. From regular beauty treatments to hair services, nail enhancements to pampering facials and massages, it’s all available in one welcoming boutique salon, at Silverstream in Kaiapoi. New to the list of services is injectables, and cosmetic teeth whitening, both starting this month. “One day a week, a qualified nurse trained by Dr Phil Frost, with his approval and oversight, will be coming to the salon to offer this treatment to our clients,” says owner/director Aniko Chahine. Loyal clients who travel from Akaroa, Hanmer and throughout North Canterbury all agree that the talented staff at Le Plaisir excel at providing exactly what they want. Popular services include IPL/SHR (super hair removal) LED with six light settings (most LEDs have 2 or 3), HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) for skin tightening treatments, micro-needling and dermaplaning. “This [HIFU] is a non-surgical skin tightening procedure, most popularly used for neck and chin. Our therapists are all are
expertly trained, ensuring that clients are in the best possible hands,” says Aniko. A full range of hairdressing services is also available, and greatly sought after. Highly experienced, the stylists have been working in the industry for 20-40 years, constantly upskilling themselves, by regular training sessions with L’Oréal and Redken, putting them at the top of their game. “Many clients return again and again because of the personal relationships they develop with their hairstylists and therapists,” says Aniko. “Service is not rushed, there is enough time to chat and enjoy the experience. Clients are not just a number, at Le Plaisir it is a personalised experience.” Staff are not just customer focused, they’re also forward thinking. A new trend identified last month that’s not so new to Le Plaisir is known as the ‘Silent Treatment’. For those who suffer from anxiety and prefer not to chit-chat, it has been part of the business ethos at Le Plaisir since pre-Covid-19, under its ‘B Silent’ option. kincare regimes can range from super simple, with only a handful of steps, to much more extensive with the layering of multiple products. Eye cream is a product becoming more popular in the skin care world, and used more as people start to notice the signs of aging around their eye area. The skin in this area is very delicate, so it’s often one of the first to show signs of aging. Generally, these signs include wrinkles, sagging, and dark circles. To keep this skin healthy and strong, consider using an eye cream. Depending on the formula, eye creams can tighten and hydrate the skin while treating common skin concerns. Here are a few eye creams to try out…

Beauty, body & hair tips Looking for your new favourite product, treatment, hairstyle or workout but not sure where to start? Here are a few inside tips and tricks from local beauty, body and hair experts.
THE SECRET TO RESTORING RADIANCE Tighten, brighten, and smooth your skin with LED Light Therapy. The most proven of LED technologies is red and infrared light, which recharge the ‘battery’ in your skin cells that become sluggish with age. This encourages them to speed up repair with the gusto of young cells, as well as soothe redness, resulting in all-around plumper, fresher-looking skin. Blue light kills off acne-causing bacteria and green light fades pigmentation. However, the results of LED treatments are cumulative. If regular appointments aren’t an option, investing in an at-home LED mask could be the answer. Treatments and at-home masks are available at Nicola Quinn Beauty & Day Spa. Get in touch with to learn more. Read more: bit.ly/NQ-LED Nicola Quinn Beauty & Day Spa | www.quinnbeautyspa.co.nz
SUPERMARKET VS SALON SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER Why is it important to use salon only product? • They have a higher concentration of active ingredients that reduce colour fade, and improve hair integrity and health • Sulphate free so no damage to your hair and kinder to the environment • Concentrated so more economical in the long term (you use half the amount) Supermarket brands mimic salon products but provide very few health benefits for your hair. or glowing skin: Try a proper peel mask to exfoliate, help reduce fine lines, improve the appearance of acne scars, and minimise pores. Keep hands soft and supple: Revitalise dry and cracked hands with a glycerine-infused overnight hand mask, or moisturise, add gloves and sleep on it.
Pamper your feet: Give yourself a foot spa. Soak in warm water, slough off any dead skin, moisturise heaps, put on your socks and relax. Again before bed is a good time. Try a hair mask: Opt for a leave-in conditioner or deep hair treatment, and relax with a book or a movie while it works its magic.

I
t’s a natural process but it doesn’t have to be a gruelling one. When teamed with a precision cut, the result is transformative, explains Master Stylist Vicki Ogden-O’Fee of V for Hair and Beauty. “Just because you have silver hair coming in and you want to go grey gracefully doesn’t mean it has to be a silver colour,” she says. “We help you discover if you are warm or cool, based on hair, skin and eyes, and from there we help you decide the best look for you.” While those with a warm
base suit silver hair with soft Champagne, sandy iris, strawberry beige, or translucent butterscotch tones, those with a cool base suit silver dove, Champagne lilac or platinum iris. “Getting your colour undertone is so important and when this is done right it gives your face an instant brightening, lift and can take years off,” Vicki says. “Get it wrong and you will feel drab and look drained and older… consultation is key.”

As temperatures drop so too do many people’s exercise schedules.
C
old days and long nights make it hard to get out of bed, let alone get the body moving, but there are some simple and effective ways to get motivated. Exercise experts say the goal is to remove as many obstacles as possible and make small changes that can make staying active easier
until spring returns. At this time of year, exercise can also help to cope with seasonal depression. The mental health benefits of exercising happen almost immediately. People feel better, less stressed and more relaxed. They feel good about doing something that is good for them.

MOTIVATE AND MOVE IT
Here are some tips from Metropol to motivate you this winter:

Find an exercise partner or group
Make it a goal to get to the gym
Exercise during your lunchtime
Swim in an indoor or heated swimming pool
By exercising with a partner or group, there’s some social pressure to show up. Exercise buddies also provide social support, camaraderie and distraction from bad weather. If exercising at home, try joining a live class on Zoom or Instagram.
Focus on getting dressed and showing up at the health club or in exercise session. Once you’ve changed into exercise gear, you’re half way there. Once you’re at the gym, or park, or in front of the television the problem of going or not is sorted.
Many people get frustrated when it’s dark in the morning and dark when they come home from work. The solution is to work out in the middle of the day, during the peak light hours. Taking a brisk walk at lunchtime provides fresh air in nature’s setting. If it’s too cold outside, walk around a mall or indoor shopping complex.
Indoor swimming is a great cardio option. A heated pool will banish the cold and is an ideal place for a workout when the weather outside doesn’t co-operate. Many pools run exercises classes for various levels of fitness, so dive in.
LET US TREAT YOURSELF WITH NEW EXPERIENCE! Our Cryo Chamber is built with the most modern solutions - your entire body is soaked into the cold air to get the most of out it! Firstly you enter the chamber with cold but not as low temperature - only to prepare your body for more extreme exposure and to do it in balanced manner - no temperature shock involved. Relax, rejuvenate, improve your health naturally with Cryo System

A warm winter work-out Not everyone fancies the idea of a fitness regime that requires jogging through Hagley Park or stripping down to a bathing suit and doing 50 lengths of a congested pool on a cold, wintry day.

ut many would love the idea of a quiet, inviting and welcoming space in which the body can gradually be relaxed and worked out in a heated room. Soul Studio Hot Yoga is a beautiful space to escape the grey gloom. Its cavernous nurturing yoga room has a gentle, cocooning ambience. The classes are designed specifically for winter practice so clients gain all the benefits of a hot yoga workout. Hot yoga raises the heart rate and core temperature, which dilates blood vessels and increases circulation in muscles, and because muscles are typically stiffer in cold weather, that’s a big benefit. “We provide a free herbal tea, free use of our mats and a wide range of heated yoga modalities. That’s why people love coming here – coming in out of the cold,” owner Sarah O’Connell says. Exclusive use of the studio for groups and private yoga, as well as drop-in classes are also available. The cost-effective Specials Winter Seasonal pass provides three months of unlimited yoga. For more information, visit the website.

your winter wellness toolkit Winter brings with it many ills and chills including colds, flu and fevers. The best way to prevent falling ill during the colder months is to boost your immunity.
F
ood – the right kind – is one way to achieve this. People often feel hungrier than usual in winter, so it is important to eat the right kind of food, particularly those that will help build your body’s immunity. Eat a balanced diet, focusing on getting as many nutrients as possible through proper food. A balance of Vitamins A, C, D and E, minerals like selenium and zinc, antioxidants and Omega 3 is required to support your immune system and they can be found in meat, legumes, cereals, whole grains, nuts and seeds, apart from fresh fruits and vegetables. Keep your digestive system healthy to build up your immune system. Add good bacteria to your diet in the form of fermented foods. Yoghurt, kefir and kimchi are
some such foods which should be included in your diet. Opt for homemade meals. Foods that stimulate immunity are typically fresh, home-cooked foods, which include milk, yoghurt, green leafy vegetables and whole grains. Avoid cold drinks and cold foods as these dampen the gastrointestinal digestive juices, and avoid eating stale, left-over items, deep fried foods, soft drinks, processed meats, baked products, and artificial sweeteners or refined sugars, since they excessively load the system with extra and unnecessary calories. They also have a negative impact on immunity. Many herbs and spices contain components that help boost the immune system. Use ginger, garlic, black pepper, turmeric, thyme, basil and cinnamon.
Immunity building foods Cabbage: It helps the skin gain immunity against dryness and acne. Cauliflower: It has anti-inflammatory properties and is rich in antioxidants. Nuts: These keep your internal body temperature warm and regulated and provide immunity against fever. Honey: A natural soothing agent to the throat and also cleanses the stomach. Yoghurt: It has natural good bacteria, which works against indigestion and infections to the gut. These help the intestinal tract to function properly. Spinach: Increases the red blood cell count in the body. These cells are responsible for carrying oxygen to and from the lungs to the body. Meat and Poultry: Meat has iron sources that fight against infection and they also develop white cells that fight bacteria and viruses. Fish: Fish oils are loaded with Omega 3, which helps reduce inflammation and protect the airways and lungs from infection.

Perfect pasta every time The hospitality industry around Christchurch finally has something to be excited about. The prospect of full restaurants without Covid-19 restrictions is a step closer.
T
he fresh pasta manufacturing company Pasta Vera shares this excitement. The team can’t wait to play its part in the renaissance by providing chefs and restaurants with its range of quality locally-produced pasta, pesto and lasagne for them to turn into delicious pasta dishes. These fresh products are also available to pasta lovers at home from selected supermarkets – New World, Raewood Fresh and Fresh Choice. Not sure how to work with fresh pasta? Pasta Vera has the answers. They have collaborated with celebrity chef Jax Hamilton to create a range of helpful recipes. The latest one is tortellini chicken with basil pesto and garlic cream –
a recipe with only five ingredients that can be prepared in less than 15 minutes. Innovating with ingredients is a standout feature of Pasta Vera, who are constantly developing new and different combinations. Launched recently was a mushroom and lentil lasagne. Created monthly there is also a new Jax Hamilton recipe which the company posts on its Instagram and Facebook pages. The mushroom, walnut and feta ravioloni with white truffle, parmesan and mascarpone cream sounds especially irresistible. Pasta Vera has a factory shop at Unit 1 /2 Musgrove Close, Wigram and they offer home delivery online.

Beering up for winter Recent research into dark beers has shown that, like red wine, they can help prevent blood clots, because of flavonoids – the micronutrients that reduce cholesterol build-up in the arteries.
D
ark beers are more complex than light beers as they have more ingredients (such as vitamin B9 enriched folic acid) hence their lingering aftertaste. Dark beers should be sipped and savoured. Wigram Brewing Company, one of Ōtautahi’s first craft beer breweries, brings its winter beer selection of bespoke brews to Hangar 57. The Bold Beers of Winter range includes four gold medal and trophy winners – Ace Smokey Porter, Munchner Dunkel, Czar Imperial Stout and Wee Reeky Scotch Ale. These full-bodied brews are packed with intense malt-forward flavours that pair well with robust cheeses, cured
meats, pickles, sourdough bread and chocolate - all in that order. With a 20-tap selection of its multi award-winning range, the bar and fillery are a great destination to set your landing gear to. Wigram’s Dark Fest coming end of July, promises a feast of winter beers matched with local beer cuisine. mushrooms Mushrooms are great any time of the year. They taste good and are full of healthy vitamins, minerals and antibiotic qualities.
T
hey’re an excellent alternative to meat, and are rich in vitamin D content, as well as being a good source of vitamins A, B, and C. Penicillin is extracted from mushrooms, so it’s no surprise to learn that they can fulfill an antibiotic function. Including mushrooms in your diet should improve your resistance to infection and strengthen your immune system. Scientists have also discovered that the compounds mushrooms contain speed up the healing process for ulcers. Mushrooms are very low in carbohydrates. They contain no cholesterol while their high protein content helps the body to consume cholesterol. They also help remove plaque accumulations from the walls of blood vessels. Consumption of mushrooms assists to redress an excess of LDL (bad) cholesterol over HDL (good) cholesterol to reduce risks of heart disease.
Last but by no means least, they’re easy to cook. They can be the hero of a dish, a side attraction or an addition to a gastronomic one pot delight. Try your hand at using them as a pizza base or topping, adding them to stir fries and risotto dishes, making a rich creamy soup, balsamic mushrooms on toast, or that old winter favourite, beef stroganoff served with creamy mashed potatoes.

Make mine BY LYNDA PAPESCH
One of my favourite drinks when temperatures drop is mulled wine. It’s so easy to make using a mix of spices from your pantry, or you can buy a sachet to mix in to your favourite red wine.
T
he best red wine to use is full-bodied, dark and fruity, so it won’t be overpowered by the spices. Try a merlot, shiraz or grenache for instance. Look for back labels that describe the wine as “jammy” or with “vanilla notes”. Avoid red wines such as cabernet sauvignon that are high in tannins or have big oaky flavours, and also lighter styles such as pinot noir. One bottle of wine should be enough for five drinks (enough for two to four people), so stock up according to the number of imbibers.
OTHER INGREDIENTS: Brandy – will up the alcohol content but isn’t an essential ingredient. Fresh oranges – for juice in the mix, and decorations when serving. Whole spices – stock up on whole cinnamon, star anise, and cloves. Maple syrup or honey – these will balance out the alcohol flavours, but only use a tablespoon or two in the mix.
TO MAKE: 1. Add the ingredients to a pot and heat gently. Resist fast cooking; wine should steam, not boil. 2. Go easy on the spices. Whole spices are potent. 3. Garnish with cinnamon sticks, star anise, and orange rounds.

Great grub and conviviality It might be only a short drive out of the city, but the atmosphere in West Melton’s Village Centre is that of a country village. And the village “pub” is the Two Fat Possums, a name as amusing as any equivalent in the United Kingdom.
Y
ou expect great grub in an establishment of this kind and The Two Possums most certainly lives up to those expectations. Wood-fired pizzas, beef cheek Madras curry and a selection of steaks are notable mentions from the menu, with the pizzas being only $20 on Mondays and Tuesdays. Every Wednesday night is burger night with large burgers only $15 each, including fries. There is just so much for any “possum” to choose from. Those in the know make Two Fat Possums their first port of call during the
ski season, as they drive back from the mountains. With its spacious dining areas and warm ambience, it’s the perfect place to unwind with a beverage to discuss the day’s activities. Two Fat Possums is a local gathering point for fundraisers and events and the team hosts a popular quiz night every Tuesday. For more information, visit the restaurant at 745 Weedons Ross Road. Indulgent apple and berry crumble Ingredients 5-6 apples, peeled, cored and roughly chopped 1/2 cup mixed frozen berries 3/4 cup plain flour 3/4 cup rolled oats
1/4 cup Chelsea soft brown sugar 80g butter, softened Pinch of cinnamon
Method Preheat oven to 180oC bake. Place apple, berries, and a splash of water together in a pot. Bring to a low simmer and stew until softened. Transfer to an oven-proof dish. Mix flour, sugar, butter, rolled oats, and cinnamon together in a separate bowl, using your hands to combine the butter well. It should be nice and crumbly, some larger chunks are fine. Keeping food safe Food is one of life’s essentials. Whether bought from a supermarket, a café or a restaurant, food should always be safe for consumption.
F
ood safety, however, does not happen spontaneously. It is highly regulated and there are organisations in our community dedicated to this task. One of these is Food and Health Standards, nationwide leaders in providing its customers with the tools to support a safe and healthy environment. Established 28 years ago, the company is proudly Aotearoa owned and operated. Its team of qualified and multi-skilled professionals fully support the development of all the industries it serves, with the utmost integrity. “Our services and sustainable solutions encompass all of the external factors
affecting public health and wellbeing,” says senior operations and quality control manager Jessica Neale. “Thanks to Food and Health Standards, the public can be assured that the food they are buying is safe to eat.” She explains that every business registered within a local body area must have a food control plan which sets out what steps food businesses must take to make their product safe. “Food and Health Standards is partnered with 14 territorial authorities, throughout New Zealand, to provide comprehensive environmental health, food and water services. “We also service private customers across

Whether these be long or short-term solutions, we are here to help. “Additionally we’re a proud sponsor of the New Zealand Institute of Environmental Health (NZIEH), and we work closely with governing bodies such as the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) and Taumata Arowa,” she adds. “When food operators know their business is meeting its food safety and suitability requirements, that boosts their confidence in their business as well.

Let’s make music BY LYNDA PAPESCH
Music is said to sooth the savage beast, and that it may, but it is also widely recognised that music provides a balance in life for many of us.
M
ost people enjoy listening to music in one form or another, many also immerse themselves in writing, playing and teaching. Music fuels creativity by stimulating the mind, or calming it down so you can relax, think and imagine. For instance, listening to instrumental music can be soothing, playing a musical instrument provides the ability to tell a story (with or without lyrics), and both require mental stimulation. Incorporating music into a home does not necessarily mean a room set aside, although if you have the space it is a great way to go.

HERE ARE SOME IDEAS ABOUT SETTING UP YOUR OWN MUSIC DEN OR SPACE: 1. Create a multi-purpose space Use the spare room or a guest room to set up a music corner. When guests are due, store instruments, sheet music, and miscellaneous items, in the wardrobe. My home features a music/exercise room. I can pedal away on my exercycle while listening to my husband Justin’s music. 2. Utilise the garage If it is large enough, take over a corner of your garage and set it up. Use partitions to create a music room, and go a step further by using soundproof materials to create the partition. Many successful bands have started out in a garage.
3. Shelving and storage Ample storage can mean shelving, cupboards and even wall hangers. Make use of walls for displaying musical instruments, and for setting a theme. Brick walls look amazing and create a very stylish urban, industrial vibe, while being strong enough to use as a musical instrument gallery. 4. Room dividers Use partitions to create separation in your in-home music room, and also as a sound buffer. Depending on the type of partitions, these can also include storage, or be used to hang instruments on.
5. Use colour Bright colours are known to stimulate the brain so if you’re planning on rocking the drums or shredding on the electric guitar, then think hot colours such as orange and red. Blues and other cool colours inspire soft melodies and soothing tunes. 6. Comfortable seating Live music invariably attracts listeners so make sure there is somewhere for your fans to sit and listen in comfort while you perform your latest offerings. A comfortable couch or chair will encourage an audience.

Colour trends will provide inspiration, as will colours that you personally like, wear and use elsewhere in your décor. Sounds so Fyne Metropol’s gadget guru Ian Knott checks out some diminutive, but powerful bookshelf speakers from Fyne Audio.
S Fyne F300 Bookshelf Speakers Dimensions: 250 x 156 x 211mm Weight: 3.7kg each Finishes: Walnut, Black Ash, Light Oak System type: 2 way, rear ported Drive unit complement: 1x 125mm multi-fibre bass, 1x 25mm polyester dome tweeter Available from: The Real Music Company Price: $695 (pair)
o you’ve blown the budget on a new turntable and preamp to play those old vinyls on, but still need some quality speakers to plug them into. Fear not, because The Real Music Company and Fyne Audio have a pair of quality bookshelf speakers that won’t break the bank. The price may be entry level but the F300 range benefits from the very best technical and acoustic expertise in the loudspeaker industry. Offering specification and audiophile performance unrivalled at its price, the F300 bookshelf speakers provide affordable quality for music lovers or movie enthusiasts. If space is at a premium in your home, the F300s have a pre-installed bracket on the rear panel allowing the speaker to be easily flush-mounted to a wall. This also comes in handy if you want to use the speaker as a rear effects speaker in a home cinema set up. With a choice of three finishes - Walnut, Black Ash,
and Light Oak – matching your decor shouldn’t be a problem. But if it is, then these speakers are small enough at just 250mm high not to make themselves a visual feature. Despite the small size, there is still a solid build quality, with each speaker weighing in at a decent 3.7kg. The units are bolstered internally by crossbracing, so there’s none of the rattling you can get with inferior products. Further stiffness is accomplished by coupling the low frequency driver’s magnet to the cabinet bracing using a resonant absorbing mastic. The delicate tweeters are protected by a mesh grille, while a removable fabric grille is deployed for the woofer unit. Whether it’s music or home cinema, the Fyne Audio F300 speakers punch well beyond their weight, and are the perfect choice for those looking for premium performance at a modest price. Now it’s up to you to do them justice with some great quality music.

A MOMENT of
Ngā mihi nui, welcome to June and welcome to my world. At a recent business planning session with our mentor Gilbert Enoka, this question was posed: “in this year of all years what have you learnt about yourself ?” And in the quieter moments I’ve had the chance to ponder just that. But before sharing those insights, I’d like to look at the real estate world collectively – and at some of the learnings readily available. It’s awards time, the financial year has been completed and, yes, you guessed it, it’s time to publish and share achievements. Open any publication or look to your social media and you’ll find numerous ‘Top 20’ groups of consultants and proclamations of greatness being made across the city. It’s done in an attempt to win the hardearnt trust – and, therefore, the real estate needs – of potential clients and it happens with every significant brand in the industry, not just the one featuring above our own doorway. It’s confusing, I know, often off-putting and, what’s more, I contribute to it! So, I’m offering my apologies whilst providing some rationale. You see, our team of 91 real estate consultants spread across four offices (soon to be five) are the real deal. Harcourts gold has the Top Residential Office in New Zealand and it’s an accolade that evokes a definite sense of pride knowing I’ve been able to contribute to that success. Our award-winning Papanui office is located in the area where my father and his family of seven grew up and where my husband and I went to high school. You see, I’ve learnt that I’m nostalgic and parochial when it comes
to my local community – and those roots run deep. In addition to this office award, we have the Top Franchise award for income per sales consultant in New Zealand, Top Office for auctions, revenue and performance, plus three consultants in the New Zealand Top 20 including Number One (out of 2,318) – my great friend and business partner, Cameron Bailey. I’m providing these details not to come across as a tiresome bore but to demonstrate a number of determinants that indicate this team really is different. And it’s this I’ve learnt: no amount of success can happen without hard work. In this industry that can mean long hours, deep rejection, constant setbacks and market challenges. I’ve also learnt that this is offset by a supportive team that collaborates, encourages resilience and celebrates when the job is done. You then go forward, year after year, and in my own case, decade after decade. Anyone can be motivated for a minute, but it takes grit to be motivated for a lifetime – and I guess that’s my biggest learning of all.

isually frame your favourite armchair with a soundwave-inspired floor design in your jam space. Start with 2-3 basecoats in Resene Walk-on flooring paint tinted to your colour of choice. Once dried fully, return your armchair to its place and use a few tiny pieces of masking tape to mark where its outer corners reach. Move your chair back to a safe, clean place. Use your masking marks to find the approximate centre of your chair. Using the pin and string method, use a chalk pencil to mark five to eight concentric circles, making the largest one slightly bigger than the size of your chair. You can do this by anchoring one end of the string to the floor in the spot you determined was the centre. Tie your chalk pencil to the other end of the string. The length of string will be the radius of your widest circle. While pulling the pencil tight on the string, draw your first circle. If the string was kept taught, the circle should come out perfectly. Re-tie your chalk pencil a few centimetres shorter on

the string and draw another circle. Repeat until you’re happy with the number and position of your circles. Using a steady hand, work slowly to paint the rings of your ‘soundwave’ using a testpot of Resene Alabaster in a single thick coat. For your piano bookcase, first, paint it in two coats of Resene Lustacryl semigloss waterborne enamel tinted to Resene Alabaster. Next, measure the height of your bookcase. Figure out how many white keys you would like your piano to have, then divide your measurement by that number. Use a ruler and a pencil to mark equal increments along the front and back edge of your bookcase and use a straight edge to connect your marks horizontally. Your black keys will rest centered in between most of your white keys, with one black key ‘missing’ following a 2-32-3 pattern. The vertical ‘width’ of these black keys should be approximately half that of the white keys, and they should
only be approximately 2/3 as long. Use a ruler, pencil and straight edge to mark their placement along the back edge of your bookcase. Then, use painter’s tape to mask along the outside edges of each black key. Paint these masked areas in two coats using a testpot of Resene All Black. Once your black keys have dried, use a small artist’s brush to paint the lines in between your white keys using a testpot of Resene All Black. PAINT Walls in Resene Zircon, Floor in Resene Bullitt, Sound waves in Resene Alabaster, Sideboard in Resene Matisse, Piano shelf in Resene Alabaster. An exciting new build
The sturdiness of schist and expanses of glass work together to find a perfect balance of solidity and lightness in this Tai Tapu home designed in the pavilion style.
T
he secure look of the exterior stone feature walls are matched with an interior designed to be bright and airy where it matters. Behind its masculine, resolute, exterior lies an open and vibrant interior world. An open floor plan was selected for the main pavilion. Here, the elongated gable structure features a taller ceiling than the bedroom wings. Sliding doors in the main living tuck away seamlessly allowing the new home owners to capture views of the hillside whether they’re lounging poolside, or having their morning coffee. “The strategy of a thin building footprint
allows for cross ventilation and natural light to help the house breathe,” says Alan Mayne, director of Boutique Architecture. Stone was selected as a prominent material, and has been used to anchor the building and connect the house to its open fourhectare site, creating a union between house and rugged farm environment. They say the kitchen is the heart of the home and this house could not be more en pointe. The kitchen acts as the main link between the second lounge and primary living, whilst also being just a few steps away from the gallery-like entrance. The second lounge has three panel sliding
doors that open to the kitchen. This allows the three living areas to combine to create greater volume, or sealed for more intimate space. The covered louvred outside living and dining area is connected to the house through an outdoor fire, creating a visual break between the pool and the house. “We are excited for this project to be out of council planning processes, and can’t wait to see it come to life,” says Alan.

hanging the look or décor in a room doesn’t necessarily mean having to buy new furniture or renovating. Sometimes a few small things, such as objects d’art creatively grouped, will inject a fresh vibe into a room or even just a corner. In the world of interior design, a vignette is a small, pleasing picture formed by grouping several objects together in one place. Think of it as a pocket-size table arrangement that tells a story about you and your home. Antique shops are perfect for browsing to find that something special to build a vignette around, so what are you waiting for?

Warm rugs for winter warmth Cold temperatures are here to stay for the next few months. Beat the chill and warm your feet by adding a beautiful area rug or carpet mat into your living or workspaces.
M There is no denying the cold temperatures are here to stay for the next few months. Beat the chill and warm your feet by adding a beautiful area rug or carpet mat into your living or workspaces.
ats and area rugs are highly sought after in Christchurch, as many homes have large hard floor areas and need an edged rug for added warmth. Carpetbinders is a family-owned business based in Christchurch, with a combined knowledge of more than 120 years of carpet and edging experience. They offer a suite of edging finishes from woollen overlocking, narrow tape binding, slimline binding and designer wide tape edging. Specialists in edging large size carpets, they make large carpet rugs up to 4m x 8m in size. Also offering wrap-around service, the team can cut to your measurements, straighten carpet, and take time to match edging from the available edging finishes, to complete a professional finish. For those who love the open road, Carpetbinders also specialise in edging motorhomes and caravans, with all their strange angles and tight corners. This customised work takes experience to get right, due to the complex lines and number of curves. Another popular product customers love are carpet mats for in and around the home. Spaces that benefit from these include the ranch slider, back or front door, in front of the hearth, garage door, laundry, and kitchen. For those who don’t have carpet for small scatter mats, there is a selection of carpet pieces for matching scatter mats throughout the home. Conveniently offering a 48-hour turnaround for most binding assignments, you won’t have to wait too long to warm your toes. There is also a pick-up and return delivery service from Lincoln to Rolleston, Central City, and Rangiora /Kaiapoi for a nominal fee. Operating out of a professional workroom that is purpose designed solely for carpet edging, Carpetbinders is proud to offer its expertise and friendly service to all customers. Pet-friendly Christchurch is a great place for pets and pet owners, with lots of animal-friendly options in and around the city. Whether you are after exercise, wining and dining or a night away, you are sure to find a few favourite spots to visit with your furry pal.
Dog friendly areas Dog parks are a great option for exercising your dog, as they can freely roam off the leash while mingling with other pooches. Bexley Reserve, Red Zone, Horseshoe Lake, Rawhiti Reserve, Styx Mill, Victoria Park, Radley Park, Halswell Quarry, and Bottle Lake Forest are all options in and around Christchurch. Other parks may have restrictions and rules, especially about dogs being on leashes, so be sure to check first.
Dining Heading out for brunch, lunch, dinner, or drinks and don’t want to leave your pampered pet at home? Luckily for you, there are lots of Christchurch eateries that love having four-legged friends join their owners for social catchups. A quick search of the café or restaurant will let you know if they are pet friendly, usually the ones with a courtyard or spacious outdoor area will be more lenient with pets coming along.
Accommodation If you are after some local accommodation, there are many pet-friendly stays to make your trip that much easier. While hotels and motels can be harder to find, there are plenty of Air BnB or privately owned options. Take a look at the site Pets Can Come Too, for a great guide to booking accommodation you can bring your pet to around the country.

For the love of Harvey Harvey is a cute and inquisitive Miniature Schnauzer puppy, who in an incredibly short time has already been in three separate situations that came quite close to being life-threatening.
H
arvey’s first health scare was due to ingesting part of a rawhide bone; his second was a chair falling on his foot, which broke it in three places; and his third scare was swallowing a grape. For local pet insurance specialist PD Insurance, this kind of heartache and financial anxiety for pet owners is seen all too often, as evidenced by the top 10 types of claims received in 2021. These were: allergy/allergic reaction, injury, ingestion, diarrhoea/gastroenteritis, bite wound/bite wound infection, conjunctivitis, lacerations, abscess and kennel cough. Fortunately for Harvey’s owners, their dog insurance cover meant
they were saved the monetary burden of accumulated veterinary bills that could have climbed into the thousands of dollars. Members of this dedicated pet insurance company receive regular bulletins giving health and lifestyle tips, such as preventing a pet from choking, safe travelling with pets and virtual vet services. It also has a Pet Parents’ Blog, a fantastic tool that covers just about every topic on pets, and if the blog doesn’t answer your questions, check out the FAQ page, and the three simple, cost-effective pet insurance plans.

Pick a pet Cats are New Zealand’s most popular pets – 44 percent of homes have at least one, while just over a quarter of Kiwis (28 percent) have dogs. That’s around 1.1 million cats and 700,000 dogs all up. That said, there’s a wide variety of all types of pets that contribute to the happiness and emotional wellbeing of New Zealanders. Here are some: Dogs
Birds
Gentle, loyal and loving, dogs make good companions both inside and outside the house. Some breeds are highmaintenance pets, and all dogs need proper care and exercise.
Guinea Pigs
Birds are colourful, pretty to look at, and bring song. Most birds are non-threatening and can stay in their cages without any trouble, but those cages do need to be cleaned.
Cats
Many children have guinea pigs as pets. They can be handled easily, and are smart. Social animals, they usually need a companion, and large living areas.
Fish
Cute and cuddly, cats also make good companions, and require little maintenance. Cats are independent, and like to wander so may disappear from time to time. They can cause allergies, and can be moody.
Turtles
Rabbits
Fish are good pets, needing only clean water and food at regular intervals. Brightlycoloured fish can be intriguing and entertaining. Remember their tanks need regular cleaning.
Gentle, and peaceful creatures, turtles are always calm, and often stay in one position for long durations. They require multiple environmental conditions to be set for survival. Reptiles
Adorable fluffy little bundles, rabbits take time getting used to human touch, but once they do, they make great pets. Rabbits are social, requiring constant attention and clean cages.
Growing in popularity, reptiles cover a range of species including lizards. Reptiles are sensitive animals, requiring specialised care to cater for special needs such as space, heat, humidity, lighting, and live prey.

Rather, it’s far more likely that you’ll chip away at it over years before you get it the way you want it. While bigger renovations – such as adding a new room to your property – can have a dramatic effect, they’re also expensive, and don’t always fit within your budget. Here are some affordable ways to revitalise your property without breaking the bank. Go open plan Opening up internal space by knocking interior walls can have a dramatic effect in any home. We see more and more of this with home owners knocking walls between kitchen and dining rooms to create lighter, brighter family areas. Depending on the size and structural considerations, knocking an internal wall will be relatively inexpensive. However, don’t underestimate the preparation beforehand. Doing it the wrong way can have major consequences. Add curb appeal Sometimes it’s not the inside of your home that really needs to change – but the impact it has on the outside. One of the most affordable ways to renovate your home is to consider curb appeal, by re-doing the driveway, trimming that hedge or even committing yourself to a complete exterior paint job.
Little fixes with big results Making little improvements around the home can make a huge difference – particularly when the small jobs you’ve been putting off for some time are allowed to add up. Our perception of our homes can amount to the frustration we feel by not getting those niggling ‘fixes’ completed. For peace of mind (and a happy marriage), it’s worth tacking them head-on. Before making a huge change to your property, don’t underestimate the value of tackling the little things first, says Rex Lawrence of Build Right Homes. “The chances are that completing a few small changes will prevent you from paying out for renovations you neither want or need. “If you are in the market for a home renovation, not sure where to start and looking for guidance from the experts, we are the leading specialist in house renovations. We understand how important it is to feel supported in bringing your dream home to life, which is why our experienced experts are committed to supporting and managing your project from consultation to completion,” he adds. If you are thinking about renovating, get in touch with Rex and his team at Build Right to book your free ‘in home’ consultation.

Final piece of the Hagley Oval Cricket Precinct
S
The Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Centre is now open, completing the final piece of the Hagley Oval cricket precinct – a journey that started in the mid ’90s.
ir Richard unveiled the new facility last month, longside Canterbury Cricket Trust (CCT) Chair, Lee Robinson, Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel and Stephen and Heather Boock whose purchase of the former Horticultural Centre originally launched the project off the ground. The Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Centre is a product of $4.65 million of fundraising including donations from the New Zealand
cricket community, The Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Trust, Sir Stephen Tindall, Glenn and Lynne Ritchie, Mark Stewart, and more. It completes the Hagley Oval Cricket Precinct which has fundraised approximately $20 million in total since 2014. Sir Richard says he is honoured that the world-class facility bears his name. “It’s a true honour and a wonderful legacy that will benefit thousands.
This centre will accommodate the next generation of cricketers. “Future Black Caps and White Ferns will walk through these doors as they start out on their cricketing journey. This is where lifelong connections will be formed and dreams will begin.” The facility features 3.6-metre cricket lanes with 20-metre runups, a 300 square metre mezzanine floor with gender-neutral changing rooms and a balcony facing the Hagley Oval.

A win for us all
Recently I had the honour of joining cricketing legend Sir Richard Hadlee for the opening of the new sports centre in Hagley Park that bears his name.
Changes as a result of The Health and Disability System Review are advancing, so far pretty much within the original timeframe specified.
T
T
he Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Centre is a worldclass indoor cricket training facility that has been built through the generosity of the cricketing community and their supporters. They raised $4.65 million for a sports centre that will be available to the community as well to the generation of cricketing greats. Through their efforts, they will help make young people’s sporting dreams come true. Listening to Sir Richard, it is clear he is enormously proud to have his name on the new centre and to be helping to support the next generation of cricketers.
The emotion of the occasion was clear. The Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Centre joins Hagley Oval as a world-class asset for our city. I know I have referred to Hagley Oval as the jewel in the crown of post-quake Christchurch so this must be the gold that forms the crown that holds the jewel. To all those who championed the project, thank you for your passion, commitment and vision. Thank you for your tireless work to develop a facility that will benefit this community and generations to come. What has been achieved is remarkable.
he end of June sees the demise of the District Health Boards across New Zealand Aotearoa, concurrent with momentum gaining in the new entities The Maori Health Authority and Health NZ. Initially most existing local activities will be rolled into these new entities so there will be no radical change in health delivery. Change is coming. That means it will be critical to ensure that while we all embrace the changes and opportunities for better co-ordinated, improved, and more equitable health outcomes, we do not lose those unique parts of the Canterbury health system that have served us so well. In Canterbury we have a
reputation for developing and adopting innovative health support systems. Doing some things differently has served us well through the major challenges we have faced, especially in recent years. A variety of unique initiatives have enabled our health system and our dedicated health workers to perform at a very high level. Innovation is very much at the core of the national reforms, and my hope is that as change occurs, the unique capabilities that have evolved in Canterbury can be protected and populated across the whole New Zealand Health ecosystem. That will be a big win for all.

Economic boosters
Back in full swing
June is a busy time for Ōtautahi Christchurch and for ChristchurchNZ. I want to highlight just two events we are behind that show different strands of the economic development work we do.
We’re already halfway through 2022 and despite the frosty mornings and chill to the air, it is warming to see that a sense of vibrancy has returned to the city in recent weeks.
O
T
n June 15/16, MEETINGS 2022 will be held at the recently opened Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre. This is a conference for conference organisers. Showing off our beautifully rebuilt city and gorgeous venues to the people who decide where to hold business events is a major economic opportunity for Christchurch. You can be sure we’ll show them the best of the City’s hospitality as we persuade them to bring their conference to Christchurch. A typical business event visitor spends three times as much each day as a visitor who comes for a rugby test match. And the 107 events at Te Pae just this year are expected to attract 68,000 people and have an estimated $37 million
economic impact on the city. A week later is the finale for the Food, Fibre and Agriculture Cluster Challenge. The Challenge brings 24 teams with innovative business ideas into Christchurch and Canterbury’s ecosystem of innovators, investors and industry experts for masterclasses, coaching and mentoring in an eight-week accelerator programme. Fresh ideas are key to the growth of this vital industry cluster, which contributes 20 percent of Canterbury’s GDP, or $13 billion annually. These ideas will help Canterbury agriculture become more productive, sustainable and competitive, and that should inspire us all.
he retail, hospitality, and events sectors are starting to stabilise after an exceedingly difficult period of time. It has been great to see so many people out and about supporting local businesses. Our regional economy continues to perform well, held steady by the primary industries and manufacturing sector, however, the talk of a looming recession is raising some eyebrows. Budget 2022, delivered a few weeks ago, contains a handful of initiatives that will help alleviate ongoing pressures on business, but notably contained very little to address some of the big long-term issues. Everywhere you look there are signs on shopfronts
advertising for staff or notifying of reduced hours – the labour market shortage is not going away anytime soon. This is especially worrisome when combined with the brain drain. On a more positive note, we are excited by the resumption of tourism. Many of our friends across the Tasman are already starting to say hello and are no doubt keeping an eye on the snow. It’s cold for us, but it’s good for business. At the Chamber, our training and events are back in full swing – recently hosting the Minister of Finance, and a course on understanding our new public holiday, Matariki. I hope you make the most of the long weekends this month, get out, and explore our region.

Solid and sustainable The word ‘sustainability’ in the building industry has become so hackneyed we often skim over it. If we do notice this tired chestnut, it probably prompts an eyeroll.
H
owever, one home building company has been genuine about sustainability long before it was a buzzword. It has been one of their central tenets for 50 years, building thousands of carbon negative timber homes all across New Zealand and the world. It was Monni Fraemohs who brought with him from Denmark to Christchurch a passion for Scandinavian solid timber home construction. In 1968 Fraemohs Homes
were, and still are, the most environmentally responsible option there is. An incredible natural building material, timber is naturally warm and healthy, carbon negative, good for the economy, and easily handles extreme conditions including massive earthquakes. Their solid timber range of homes include transportables and kitsets, in an array of sizes. Each feature timber sustainably grown in New Zealand, meaning no

international carbon miles, and no foreign forests plundered. “An investment in a Fraemohs Home is an investment in a carbon negative home,” says manager Amanda van der Kley. “Your home will actually offset carbon emissions rather than add to climate change.”

Artistic heating warms your world From gas to wood burning to electric, there are numerous options when it comes to heating, but which one is right for your home?
A
n innovative option that is gaining in popularity is infrared heating panels, which provide radiant warmth and also look aesthetically pleasing. Herschel is the global specialist in infrared heaters and also New Zealand’s market leader. National sales manager, Les Sperring explains that the special panels heat a home the same way the sun heats the earth. “It uses far infrared energy to warm up the fabric of the building and all the things inside it, including you. This turns the very surfaces of your home into part of your radiant heating solution, delivering you a consistently warm and comfortable environment.” He adds that unlike convection heat, which simply warms the air and moves it around the house, radiant heat travels
through the air and is instead absorbed by objects and the room materials themselves. “Once the objects and room have been heated enough, they radiate the heat as well, and your whole room becomes part of the heating system, giving you a wonderfully cosy environment to enjoy. “When installed and operated correctly, it can be more cost-effective to warm your home over a 24-hour period than with a heat pump. “Once your home is up to temperature, it radiates that heat back out slowly. When operated with a thermostat, the heaters will heat the environment, then switch off and let your home radiate that warmth back, only coming back on to recharge it again. “We call this running time the cycle time. Once your home is heated up, the cycle time drops dramatically over a 24-hour
period. Depending on what your home is made of, this could be as little as four hours a day for a home that is warm day and night,” Les says. “Aesthetically the heaters look great too. A slim-line discreet panel that can be ceiling or wall mounted, they’re available in a range of styles, from white metal to black or white glass, and even mirrors. For high ceilings we have a hanging pendant version, and we also have outdoor heating so you can enjoy the feeling of the sun on the patio, long after it has set.”

A boost for apprenticeships It’s good news for employers hoping to get new apprentices on board to train and upskill.
T
he Government is extending its Apprenticeship Boost scheme, helping employers keep and take on more apprentices. BCITO, a division of Te Pūkenga subsidiary Work-Based Learning fully supports this extension. Director of BCITO, Jason Hungerford, says that Apprenticeship Boost is essential for training the skilled pipeline of workers needed in the building and
construction industry. “With record demand for construction work, and despite current supply chain issues, New Zealand needs qualified workers more than ever.” BCITO has seen rapid growth in its apprentice numbers, which are now at record levels since the scheme was introduced in 2020. “At the end of March 2022, we had 21,600 apprentices undertaking training
across our 15 trades. This is up an astonishing 55 percent from the 13,900 apprentices in August 2020. The number of employers supporting apprentices has increased from 6900 to 9500 in the same time period, demonstrating how important this support is for businesses.” This gives employers support to continue training apprentices, particularly with some of the challenges currently being faced, such as the supply of building materials.

The heart of a home Well-crafted kitchen transformations are dollars wisely invested – and one to take pleasure in every single day.
“O
ver the last 18 months people have put money back into their homes,” says owner Mark Allworthy of Bates Joinery. “Most of our suppliers have had supply issues, however alternatives throughout the supply chain have been available, and with rationing and forward planning, its all been running smoothly. “Blum who is our main supplier of drawer and hinge fittings are back to normal with their supply.” This worldwide company produces European innovations. Mark says the trend is darker colours and wood grain finishes. The difference this time round is brightening the depth with clever LED lighting. Joinery is fitted with strategically placed power points, ready to plug and play.
Soft-touch matt black and brass tap wear is still popular. And now gold and brass faucets and sinks bowls add a little glamour, as do engineered stone and porcelain benches. To see how it all comes together, Jaden Allworthy, a qualified Interior designer, and Mark’s son, creates 3D images with colour palettes and design options after the consultation. Revolutionising panel construction N
ew Zealand engineers aim to revolutionise the way we construct buildings with a modular building system that’s fast to assemble, recyclable and could be the answer to earthquake prone communities. University of Canterbury (UC) Professor Rajesh Dhakal leads a team of industry and academic experts seeking to overcome the shortcomings of traditional concrete buildings and current prefabrication practices. The Rapid, Reduced-carbon, Resilient, and Recyclable Modular Building System (R4MBS) is made up of prefabricated components which are assembled using low-damage steel connections and positioned without the need of on-site concreting. The project aims to improve design and construction practice to make future buildings structurally flexible and adaptable
enough to meet increased public and industry expectations. “To meet changing societal demands, the design and construction philosophy for new builds and the maintenance and upgrading of existing buildings needs to evolve,” Professor Dhakal says. A modular building system can save months of construction time while reducing production waste which brings considerable cost savings and environmental benefits. R4MBS will provide design and construction guidance making it easy for industry adoption and implementation in new buildings while allowing for ease of extension and seismic upgrading, if necessary. “Our understanding of seismic risk is improving constantly with new knowledge exposing deficiencies in our existing building environment,” Professor Dhakal says.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT - CONCEPT TO COMPLETION
New Zealand engineers aim to revolutionise the way we construct buildings with a modular building system that’s fast to assemble, recyclable and could be the answer to earthquake prone communities.
“R4MBS buildings will be significantly more resilient in earthquakes than traditional concrete buildings. The lowdamage design eliminates the need for repairs on buildings hit by minor to moderate earthquakes while, in the event of a severe earthquake, the modular construction means full repair is possible by replacing only the damaged components.” R4MBS avoids the vulnerability of precast floors by adopting a novel and smart connection between the floor and the building frames. The floor is prefabricated offsite and assembled on location using low-damage steel connectors, greatly reducing the risk of damage to the floor. Because the system is modular, there’s no need for demolition as the structure can be partially or fully disassembled for reusable or recyclable components.

Location-enabled technology may change the way Kiwis function in the future, NZTech chief executive Graeme Muller says.
A
s cities like Tāmaki Makaurau, Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Ōtautahi, Tauranga, Ōtepoti and Kirikiriroa expand, leaders are considering sustainability as a key driver, he says. “We are redefining what a city is and how we interact within it. With urban population growth, a pandemic, and a housing crisis to boot, it is evident that our buildings, infrastructure, transport and resource management need to become more adaptable.” The rise in location-enabled tech such as augmented reality, space data and GeoAI could change the way we live in the future. Tech can play its part in building adaptable and sustainable cities, Muller says. Alison Mackie, executive director of LocationTechNZ, says new location-based technologies like digital twins will be key to helping New Zealand towns big and
small deal with problems such as traffic congestion, resource management and air pollution. “Sustainability in towns and cities includes ensuring community safety and security; maintaining high quality of life for all residents; and establish a robust economic and environmental framework for continued settlement,” she says. “There are examples around the world of digital tech creating faster, cleaner and more convenient commutes. “In Israel, users enter their location and destination, and an algorithm calculates the most efficient journey. “Public transport is then rerouted accordingly. The system was introduced to help fight Covid-19, but if implemented permanently it is thought it could save $25 million a year.” Mackie says that by 2050, it is estimated that almost 70 percent of the world’s
population will live in cities, making the concept of sustainable communities an efficient resolution to the constantly growing population. “The world is seeing people innovating with location-based technologies to help tackle challenges such as congestion and climate change. “With an ever-increasing global population and rising urbanisation, creating safe, resilient and sustainable cities is right at the top of the agenda,” she added. Relevant examples in New Zealand, include the emergence of location-based apps such as U Share, Link App and Parkable, all of which were designed to reduce congestion, enable car-pooling and improve parking. Auckland recently ranked ninth in the 2021 Global Smart City Index and Wellington ranked seventh in the 2021 Global Safe City Index.

Creating lush, green lawns A beautiful lawn doesn’t happen by itself. It takes care and nurturing, yet it is possible to have a beautiful, healthy, lush lawn growing at your home or business in a matter of hours.

or 50 years the third generation family business, Readylawn has known that the grass is always greener when you really care for it. One of the company’s recent projects is testament to that. “A very exciting project of late for us has been working on Christchurch City Council’s redevelopment of Lancaster Park,” says Roger Morgan, managing director of Readylawn. “Work began in April 2021 to turn the park into a green recreational space including community sports fields and a cricket oval. We carried out the irrigation installation and grassing after the main contractors, Taggarts, took care of the old stadium foundation removal and importation of 800 truckloads of topsoil.” Roger says it was a significant task to construct and grow the grass seed over
the 6.8 hectare (16 acre) site and the fields will be ready for opening by the end of June. “We are proud to have been involved in this successful partnership with Taggarts and CCC.” ALL TYPES OF PROJECTS Readylawn’s landscape teams also work on smaller landscape projects such as laying instant Readylawn and planting and irrigation at residential properties “A growth aspect of our work has been the introduction of our range of quality artificial grass. With much smaller sections becoming the norm artificial grass is an excellent alternative and we have a number of options available,” says Roger. You can contact Readylawn on 03 349 6980.

Home building costs soar The average cost of building a home in New Zealand’s main centres has shot up 20.9 percent in the last 12 months.
Q
V CostBuilder, New Zealand’s construction cost database, reports that at the end of April, based on more than 60,000 updates rates, there was a 20.9 percent increase in the cost to build a standard threebedroom home, compared with the same time last year. The biggest elemental price increases since its last update at the end of 2021 were for stairs and balustrades, which went up 17.4 percent, due to increases in precast concrete and structural steel, followed by substructure (10.1 percent), site preparation (9.7 percent), framework (8.3 percent), and windows and exterior doors (8 percent). QV CostBuilder spokesperson and quantity surveyor Martin Bisset says the sheer size of some of the increases,
WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED. PLUMBING | DRAINAGE | GAS
at a time when the construction industry is largely at capacity, is surprising. He predicts that with inflation and interest rates also rising, and supply chain issues still prevalent, there will be further price increases in the future. QV CostBuilder’s database of more than 60,000 costs across six regions of New Zealand – including Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin – is updated twice annually. “It’s important to remember these figures are averages for the six cities covered by CostBuilder and the cost of building will always be dependent on the level of finishes, internal layout, and whether it has a single or double garage,” Mr Bisset says.
