Colour Red Zone

Colour and life are being injected into the city’s infamous ‘red zone’ for the first time since February 2011.

T

he Colour Zone Run will bring much more than red to the residential red zone, in fact, all the colours of the rainbow will be on display on Sunday 25 November. The 5km run/walk will see participants blasted with colour from all angles, with

the opportunity to roll through colour or just get your friends covered in colour. Fun is after all, the name of this red zone game. Headed by the team behind 15 actionpacked events throughout the city – CJM’s Events – you can expect a colourful day out for the whole family, organiser John

Moore says. “It will be full of surprises,” he says of the bursts of colour that could hit you at any moment. “We were throwing around ideas for where we could hold a colour run and it was a great opportunity to bring some colour and life back into the residential red zone. It’s a great location for something like this. Many people haven’t been back into this area of the city since the earthquakes.” Despite bringing real colour back to what’s been known as the red zone, it is about so much more than just a colour run. John says it will be a great day out for families, with an after-party to remember. For more information and to enter, visit www.colourzonerun.co.nz.

he large, isolated community of Gloriavale where she was raised, 70km inland from Greymouth on the West Coast, near the Haupiri River, was both idyllic – and cruel. The granddaughter of Hopeful Christian, founder of one of the country’s most notorious religious cults, the Cooperites, Lilia was raised far from the prying eyes of the outside world and the people she was raised to believe were wicked and un-Godly. She was not free to choose what she would wear, what music and movies she listened to, who she would marry, how many children she would bear or what occupation she could pursue. In fact, she could not even freely leave the premises. In 2009, at 18 years of age, Lilia left the community with her father Perry, her pregnant mother Miracle and her six younger siblings. With just the clothes on their backs, they joined Lilia’s three other siblings, who had escaped as teenagers, in the outside world. But in leaving her friends, family and everything she knew, Lilia found herself. “It has been such an incredible journey of self-exploration,” she says of the nine years since she left Gloriavale. “I have been on a journey to understand my past and I wanted to use that to make an impact on the world and inspire others. Life has changed beyond recognition.” The fashion-following foodie is somewhat obsessed with science-fiction; she has eschewed the Godly music for indie and alternative rock; she dresses almost as bright and bubbly as her personality. She is undeniably beautiful, but it’s her passion and her warmth that makes her so endearing. More than 3.8 million people have watched the incredibly powerful Tedx Christchurch talk she delivered last year, tears rolling down her cheeks, and her book Daughter of Gloriavale: My life in a Religious Cult became a bestseller. Creativity has always given her ‘free spirit’ an outlet and a sense of freedom when she was anything but free. “I decided to write myself a new story, and part of it was looking at the past and talking publicly about Gloriavale for the first time without shame,” she says, both of the figurative and literal journey her life has taken. In the repressive, fundamentalist cult, women have no voice. Female children attend preschool, then school, but from the age of six they rise early to carry out domestic chores. When a school report praised sixyear-old Lilia for her strong ‘leadership qualities’, her grandfather denounced her in front of the community, reminding her that

‘bossy’ women like her were not welcome at Gloriavale. The traits of leadership, self-respect and confidence are very possibly a direct result of the life that was forced upon her and Lilia has a healthy understanding of the role Gloriavale has played in creating the strong and independent woman she is today. “This tight control meant we were engineered to think you are not ok if you do this or do that,” Lilia explains. “I have had to re-learn how to feel about myself.” In the years after she left the cult, she became obsessed with learning everything she could about human behaviour. “I thought if I can understand myself and others better, I can protect myself. I can make sure no one ever takes advantage of me ever again.” Today the inspiring messages she spreads to other young women through her online presence and her writing are grounded in self-love, emotional awareness, living authentically and chasing dreams. She teaches people to find their power, after all, Lilia knows better than most what it is like to feel trapped and powerless. With six younger siblings looking up to her, she recognises the importance of having strong role models. “By chasing my dreams, I’m telling my siblings that it’s ok. It’s ok to be a role model for strong, confident women leaders.” Going public with her message has been a therapeutic experience that has helped her grow so much as a person. “I’m still healing and that process will never stop for me,” she says. “Leaving was a massive sacrifice. I loved my cousins and Gloriavale was the only home I’d ever know, so leaving was a massive sacrifice. I didn’t process that loss for six years. Then I realised I was allowed to grieve. “I fell apart for a while and writing my book was my way of picking up the pieces.” Today Lilia does some bookkeeping work, along with public speaking and she continues to write, with a second book – this time on empowerment – planned. She travels and she blogs. She even talks to Year 10 students about healthy self-esteem, making good life choices and empowerment. Lilia has plenty of dreams, only now, she has the freedom to pursue them. Lilia is one of the inspiring women speakers at the Adventurous Women, part of the biennial Word Christchurch writers’ festival, Sunday 2 September. Gardens Good for

By Céline Gibson

Search out your sunscreen, sunhats and panamas, for spring has sprung and there’s no finer pleasure than to gaze upon the fragile perfection of a beauteous bloom, or to delight in the sweetest, headiest fragrances that perfume the air.

unday 2 October, 2018 brings us Garden Tour – a fundraiser for Cancer Society, Ellesmere Group, held in conjunction with Rotary Club of Lincoln. Starting 10am and finishing at 4pm, Garden Tour gives garden lovers the opportunity to visit ten glorious private gardens in the Prebbleton and Broadfield districts. There’s to be stalls aplenty such as Garden Art by Jackson; ‘The Scarecrow Lady’ and her adorable scarecrows; local Springston artist Ian Ford’s sculptures from old farm machinery, plus food stalls, a jewellery stall and, of course, plant stalls. One of the gardens on the tour will have local art works displayed to their very best advantage – adding yet another visual treat for ‘tourists’. A fun and exciting component of the Garden Tour are spot prizes throughout the day, and a raffle with excellent prizes, such as hairdresser, beauty salon and hospitality vouchers, and garden products. Prebbleton Domain will be open for refreshments, and the quaint historic school at Broadfields, now the Broadfields Community Centre, will feature Devonshire teas on the menu. Should 21 October bring inclement weather, the Garden Tour will happen 22 October – Labour Day. Tickets are $25. For more information phone 03-925 9708 or email selwyn.centre@cancercwc.org.nz.

No limits for youth When she finished highschool in 2015, April McLennan was overwhelmed with the sheer number of choices facing her, in order to fill the 80,000 hours that research tells us we work in our lifetimes.

I

t was a concern which was front of mind when she attended Festival for the Future. At the event, April attended a social enterprise workshop where the question was asked, ‘if there was one issue you could solve, what would this be?’ For April, this issue was centred around

those career choices and the significance of these on her life. She then attended the Live the Dream programme. Recognising the need to assist youth to find fulfilling work and create the connections, opportunities and pathways to access this, she started a social enterprise to support

learn, define what success may look like, and move towards it.” The three-day conferences offer young people opportunities to hear from inspiring speakers, take part in workshops and do interactive activities. Limitless finished its 2018 conference in Christchurch earlier this month, connecting 230 students with entrepreneurs from throughout New Zealand. In total, the conferences have connected with 730 students from 30 schools around Canterbury over the past three years and continues to grow, with geographical expansion in longer term plans. In recognition of her work in this space, April won the 2017 Minister for Youth’s International Leadership Award. One of just four in total, she was the only South Islander to receive the award. April says she feels fortunate that growing up she had mentors and role models that supported her. Struggling with shyness, they saw there was more than meets the eye when it comes to the inspiring young Cantabrian. “They believed in me. Every young person needs that. We need to focus on the special things about each person and to equip and empower them for the future. We want to equip with applicable and helpful skills. “The way we’re working is changing, but the statistic of 80,000 hours that we spend working in our lifetimes goes some way towards demonstrating the importance of doing work that is fulfilling and meaningful. II know so many people that really face up the challenges in work and in our society through tapping into their strengths and values - where they work in a way that aligns with their ‘why’ and they’re creating impact while finding their work fulfilling. We’d love to see young people empowerred to pursue and thrive in work like this.” For more information on Limitless, visit www.limitless.org.nz.

down the track that were doing work they found really stimulating and rewarding, so some questions arose about how myself and those around me could create pathways towards work that was like this – purposeful, energising and fulfilling.” The mission is to equip young New Zealanders with the awareness, confidence and opportunities to pursue and excel in work they are passionate about. How it does this is through inspiring Limitless Conferences for Year 10 students and a unique online portal that connects students post-conference with opportunities for mentoring, work experience, volunteering and more, through a collaborative platform. April and her team are currently working on the prototype pilot for a Year 11 refresher day that will be available to young people who attended the Year 10 programme, so these students can access further support as they enter the next stage of their school career, with new challenges and opportunities at their disposal. Many students don’t recognise their own strengths and, particularly, how these can become the foundation for a career. The focus of the conference is helping young people to assess their own strengths, values and passions and recognising how their work can tie into their purpose or values. “Through our conferences, we want to facilitate conversations that delve into the unique foundational strengths of these students, their values and what they’re passionate about, whether someone is a strong debater, a strategic thinker, or they have a strong sense of manaakitanga (the process of showing respect, generosity and care for others). “If we can equip young people to live from a strong foundation of knowledge of their strengths and integrity to their values, then it opens up pathways for these young people to be curious, explore,

Dr Libby’s Nutritional Beauty We all know nutrition plays a key role in how we feel, but Dr Libby Weaver explains, it’s also integral to how we look. Dr Libby shares her advice on beauty from the inside out.

Exhibition

"Spring Fever" 8th Sep~3rd Oct

12 August 30, 2018 Metropol

Dr Libby Weaver will be speaking about ageing and hormones in Christchurch on Wednesday 17 October , as part of her 26-stop Australasian tour, The Hormone Factor. Tickets are $39.95, for more information, visit www.drlibby.com.

Diet’s also pretty key to how you feel on the inside as well, so how we can produce more mood-lifting anti-anxiety and antidepressant hormones naturally? Increasing our nutrient intake is, again a great place to start. I can’t emphasise enough the importance of plenty of plants when it comes to our health! One of our happy hormones, serotonin, is predominantly made in our gut so ensuring our digestion is working well can also go a long way to supporting the right amount of this mood-lifting hormone. Of course, it is through the gut that we also absorb all of our nutrients so this is yet another reason to look after your digestive processes.

What are some of the most common beauty challenges people ask you about? Most commonly I’m asked how to get beautiful, glowing skin and how to prevent premature ageing, but I also often get asked about thinning hair which seems to be a common challenge for many women these days. Acne driven by sex hormone imbalances is also very common.

When it comes to diet, what do you consider to be some of the real “superfoods” – the things you wouldn’t ever do without? I consider all whole, real foods to be super but the real superstars are definitely vegetables. Brassica vegetables are standouts for the nutrients they offer that stimulate liver detoxification processes. I’m also a huge fan of parsley for its micronutrient and flavonoid content and I love lemons for their ability to support optimal stomach pH, which is essential for great digestion.

How can we seek to heal common beauty challenges like acne, cellulite, dark circles and thinning hair from the inside out? Each beauty challenge will be driven by a different internal biochemical process. I always say that to find the path to healing, we have to find the road we took to create the challenge. A fantastic first step is to focus on amping up our intake of vegetables, eat in a way that focuses on whole, real food and make water our main drink. Our body prioritises our survival over our beauty and so nutrients go to lifeprotecting processes before they’re sent to the upkeep of our skin, hair and nails. If we’re not getting enough nutrients, we’re already on the back foot when it comes to providing our body with what it needs and our “beauty bits” will likely suffer for it.

You always look amazing, what are some of your key beauty tips? You are very kind, thank you. The way we nourish ourselves forms part of our beauty routine, like it or not, so focus on what you put inside your body (as well as what you avoid or minimise). We simply cannot fight the biological requirements of our body for nutrients. Embrace strategies that help you to manage your body’s stress response (diaphragmatic breathing is a great place to start). Be mindful about what you put on your skin—opt for natural or organic skincare products that don’t add to the load your liver needs to process. Practice gratitude and appreciation for your amazing body and what it allows you to do and experience in life. What if your beauty challenges were simply messages from your body, asking you to eat, drink, move, think, breathe, believe or perceive in a new way? Try to see them as the gifts that they are.

A beautician recently told me that what you put inside your body is so much more important that all the lotions and potions you could possibly put on the outside. How accurate is this statement? I agree wholeheartedly. I like to say that beauty really is an inside job. What is happening on the outside – our skin – is a reflection of our inner health, so it seems crazy to me that so often the focus is on what we can do externally to our skin. What we put on our skin matters, of course, but in order to get the outcomes we seek, we must also address any challenges from the inside out. The skin needs certain nutrients and antioxidants to be at its radiant best so what we eat and drink really matters.

A

s we mark the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage in September, workplaces are increasingly giving employees flexible working conditions. However, many of these employees feel the pressure to slip quietly out of the door at the end of their work day, so not to bring attention to themselves. Recognising that encouraging flexible work requires more than just rewriting the rules, an increasing number of workplaces are encouraging staff to ‘leave loudly and proudly’. The catchy concept has been gaining global traction in the past 12 months as employers seek to break down stigmas and uncomfortable feelings associated with other commitments, particularly families. Last year, PepsiCo Australia and New Zealand Chief Executive Robbert Rietbroek got a tidal wave of support when he encouraged his executive team to ‘leave loudly’ when they head out of the office. Westpac is the latest major company encouraging a flexible working environment, putting a ‘leave loudly’ policy in place earlier this month. According to the Employment New Zealand website, flexible working arrangements can help employee retention, lift morale and reduce absenteeism, by assisting staff to achieve worklife balance. All employees in New Zealand have a right to request flexible work arrangements and employers have a duty to consider them however, they can decline to do so if there is a good business reason.

Coffee Connoisseurs Coffee Worx Espresso Bar is situated at 60 Hayton Road in the heart of Wigram’s busy industrial area. This funky little industrial espresso stop is the perfect filling station for the discerning coffee lover; either to get a takeaway coffee, delicious freshly made cabinet food including the famous bagels, or to buy freshly roasted coffee for home use.

offee Worx has had a long history of roasting and serving premium quality coffee blends for the Christchurch market and has now created the perfect marriage, combining its coffee distribution centre and a fast service coffee bar. The company has been distributing coffee to its many customers around the South Island from Wigram for the past 10 years, but until recently was housed in a cul-de-sac without a street frontage. However, many people would call into its industrial building asking if they could get coffee to go, which wasn’t possible in that situation. So, when the owners Deb and Ian Riach saw a building come available on Hayton Road, they jumped at the opportunity to open a small café at the front, making it possible to make their sought-after coffee available to the public. This has worked very well and they now have a regular and growing market of coffee connoisseurs getting their daily coffee fix and fresh roasted, award winning coffee beans from Wigram. They have several blends available in 1kg and 200gm bags, but they are happy to grind and pack to order.

Pasta passion Italian film director Federico Fellini once said, “Life is a combination of magic and pasta”. It’s an observation that gourmet pasta wholesale and retail business Pasta Vera would heartily agree with; after all, this company has been a top pasta producer for the past 17 years.

“O

ur pasta is fresh and Canterbury made, and we are the preferred supplier to restaurants and hotels around New Zealand,” says owner operator Phil Bennett, who works with leading chefs around the country to create specialised pasta for their restaurants. Attached to Pasta Vera’s new custom-built factory is the factory shop. “People from all over Canterbury come here, including busy mums, sports people, singles, retired couples wanting tasty meals in the freezer, fund-raising organisers looking for a healthy fundraising opportunity… and of course, our passionate pasta people!” Most popular is the baked

lasagne range, available as a single serve meal, or as a 3kg catering tray. Other products include delicious pestos, fresh egg pasta and gourmet ravioli filled with traditional spinach and fresh ricotta, to more exotic fillings such as pear and gorgonzola, prawn and crab, or leek and walnut. A recent addition is the new vegan lasagne and vegan/nut-free basil pesto. Located on the corner of Wigram Road and Musgrove Close with easy off-street parking, why not magic up your life with a tasty bit of Italian? Keep up with weekly factory shop specials and recipe ideas on their Facebook page. Winter hours weekdays 8am to 5pm, Saturdays 10am to 2pm. Visit www.pasta.co.nz/factory-shop. Triumph Odds

over the

Good decisions, attention to detail and faithful restoration have rejuvenated the Arts Centre’s Clock Tower, earning it a top heritage award.

T

he restored and fully strengthened building – which houses the Rutherford’s Den science museum and shop, Bunsen café and the Arts Centre administration offices – rose above 35 other finalists to win the 2018 Supreme Award at the biennial Box 112 Canterbury Heritage Awards in June. The 141-year-old Benjamin Mountfort-designed tower also won the Public Realm – Saved and Restored Award category, a category the centre’s Boys’ High Building was also commended for. The centre’s restored Great Hall took out the Supreme Award in 2016. Awards chair Dr Anna Crighton says the four-storey tower’s revival was “one of the most significant heritage restoration projects of Christchurch’s post-quake recovery”. “There is so much nostalgia and many stories and memories of the Clock Tower that its exemplary restoration is a story of triumph over seemingly impossible odds.” This award is one of seven the restored Arts Centre buildings have received, including a 2017 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation. Led by the Arts Centre, Warren and Mahoney Architects, Fletcher Construction and Holmes Consulting, among others, hundreds of workers poured thousands of hours into the Gothic revival style building’s rejuvenation. It reopened in 2016 with more than 10,000 of the public pouring in its doors. While the Arts Centre restoration has passed its halfway point, the charitable trust behind it is actively fundraising to bridge the substantial shortfall in funds to complete the project. To support the rebuild, visit artscentre.org.nz/support.

Congratulations to The Arts Centre of Christchurch for their success at the Heritage Awards Rhodes & Associates Limited are grateful for the privilege to be extensively involved in providing cost-consultancy services for this precious Category 1 Heritage site. Giving you ‘More Mobility’ More Mobility makes life comfortable and easier for those with injuries, disabilities, or for the elderly.

N

othing is more important than restful sleep and Sleep Systems i-Care beds offer life-enhancing benefits and a 10-year warranty. The Visco Elastic memory foam mattresses come in soft, medium or firm and respond to body temperature and pressure, or there’s a firm Latex alternative. “We encourage people to lie on our beds and try them out, and we’ll demonstrate how they work,” Sales Consultant Tracey Peterson says.

The IC3 electric-bed model has the standard back lift, but also bends comfortably into the crook of the knee. The IC33 also includes a head, feet and full body massage function, whereas the IC 333 offers a unique high/low and tilt adjustment. “We can also make a companion, with say a static and an electric bed fitting snuggly together.” Box surrounds come in fabric choices and a range of accessories including a comfy

5cm-thick Visco elastic topper for existing beds. The Pride armchairs are as good looking as they are functional. “As we age, we need more assistance getting out of a chair. The beauty is you can control the lift height function to your own comfort level and muscle tone.” Single-motor chairs have a simple twoarrow remote, and the twin-motor adjusts the feet and head separately. There is a choice of materials and specific functions, such as elevating feet above heart level, or chairs designed for the higher-weight user, or the petite person. Celebrating women’s suffrage Christchurch will host a special event next month to mark the beginning of the celebrations of the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New Zealand.

T

his will be an opportunity for local people to celebrate Christchurch as the birthplace of the women’s suffrage movement. Mayor Lianne Dalziel says we’re incredibly lucky to have the Prime Minister, Rt Hon Jacinda Ardern as the keynote speaker, along with students from local schools taking part in a question and answer session with the Prime Minister. “This is going to be a very special event for our city. We have such a strong history of female leaders – not only can we lay claim to being the home of Kate Sheppard

as she spear-headed the suffrage campaign, Christchurch produced the first woman elected to Parliament in 1933 and the first Minister for Women’s Affairs. “Christchurch has a proud history of being at the forefront of campaigns for social change. It is part of who we are and what we stand for as a city. “It’s especially fitting to have the Prime Minister speaking at this event, inspiring the next generation of young female leaders in our city,” the Mayor says. The event will be held at the Isaac Theatre Royal on 13 September 2018 at

4pm with tickets available from Ticketek. Proceeds from ticket sales will go to the YWCA Emergency and Transition Housing Programme, for women and women with children. Founded in Christchurch in 1883, 10 years before women got the vote, Kate Sheppard served on the YWCA’s board in the late 1880s. The Mayor says this is the first of a number of events planned to celebrate the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage. The other events will be part of Beca Heritage Week, which runs from 12-22 October 2018.

Logan McMillan and Andrew Dean, along with McMillan’s brother John, are the trio behind local escape room business Crate Escape. Logan says Crate Escape’s games are based on four basic principles: discover, decipher, unlock and escape. The company has two escape rooms in Christchurch – The Misadventures of Max Magnus and The Lost Hut of Antarctica, which are both set in shipping containers on Armagh Street. Its third escape room, set to open next month, is less of a room and more of a, well… an eerie 300 square metres of former courthouse holding cells. The buildings are now owned by Science Alive, a charitable education trust, and the city’s court services have moved to Te Omeka – The Christchurch Justice & Emergency Services Precinct. Logan says when the opportunity arose to open an escape room in the basement of a former court building – complete with jail cells, interview rooms, creaking cell doors, moody lighting and suspects’ graffiti, it was too good to pass up. “Ideally, we have created an environment that makes you feel like you are in a movie or a real-life conspiracy. How many people get to try and escape from a prison?”

SPRING AESTHETIC

2.

A new season welcomes with it an opportunity to introduce a new aesthetic into our wardrobes. With the warmer weather of spring on the sartorial horizon, we’re excited about the chance to usher in some bold new basics.

S

tatement earrings, a beautiful new piece of armcandy, silk scarves or a tempting new timekeeper are all easy ways to add some spring into your step. This season’s colour trends are a game of two halves – on one side a strong, vibrant palette, that recalls fauvist pictures, on the other towards pastel hues on light and destructured garments. Erring on the side of bold, we’re looking forward to the delicious sorbet shades coming through, as the new spring fashions start rolling out. Pantone, the world leader in colour, has crowned these the Top Colours of Spring/Summer 2018 and if New York Fashion week is anything to go by, these delicious hues will be making a big impact in the months ahead.

Looking gorgeous August 9 marked a very exciting night for Lee Parker and her staff at the newly opened Duet in Lincoln Village.

t’s bright and beautiful,” Lee says. “We so look forward to offering our clients the very best in advice, service and fabulous garments with labels like Loobies Story, Lemon Tree, Fray, Vassalli, Betty Basics and Garcia.” Lee says her focus has always been on clothes designed for the modern woman who seeks both comfort and practicality, but also glamour and sophistication. “It’s so important for a woman to look gorgeous and feel confident – not just one day of the week, but every day!” Should the ensemble you’ve fallen in love with need alterations, there’s no need to worry about finding a dressmaker. Duet does alterations on any garment sold; it is the only store in Christchurch which offers alterations to this extent. “It’s so important to have clothes that fit perfectly – that highlight your shape in the most flattering way. That’s why we’re more than happy to alter garments to ensure you achieve your personalised fit.” Lee says her staff are very helpful and honest. “They won’t give the false sell. They’re excellent stylists who can advise on full wardrobe ideas, including garments from home that aren’t working. Bring them in and let’s make them work!” Duet has a VIP Club to keep people informed of the latest news happening instore. Find Duet at shop 3, 9 Gerald Street, Lincoln. Beckenham’s fashion central

Welcome to the new revamp at Made in the Shade – here it’s impossible not to find the perfect outfit, with new stock of the best labels arriving daily. It has become a busy little shop – Beckenham’s fashion central!

“O

ptimum Knitwear has been our great success,” Ali says. It has pride of place in the entranceway. It’s 100 percent non-pilling cotton and I can order any style in any size or colour.” A large rack is dedicated to the sumptuous Simply Linen range. Made in Italy, it’s non-creasing, no-iron, wash and wear luxury. Pants are wide and floaty or fitting this season, she says. The latest stripes look great with high waists. Canadian-made quality Lisette L pants are so feminine, and perfect-fit NYDJ jeans can also be ordered to size. “Whether you’re out for a coffee or at a wedding, Anne Mardell’s dresses, tops and pants always look beautiful, especially teamed with a little jacket.”

Bittermoon dresses are of soft, draping fabric, with great sleeves and a flattering empire line. And Black Stone is another well-loved label. “Sharon, Marion and myself know what will suit everyone that walks through the door. A regular customer recently said: Oh, you are naughty Ali, I only came in for one thing! Nevertheless, she left very happy with a beautiful new wardrobe. It’s creating a story, where everything co-ordinates.” Made in the Shade always has sale items and a 70 percent-off sale rack, while the Zsiska handmade jewellery adds that eye-catching finishing touch. Huffer’s street success

At this year’s NZ Fashion Week, Huffer celebrated 21 years since it was founded by two mates with dreams of taking New Zealand streetwear to the next level. That journey has seen the company go from an alternative skate and snow brand to an icon of New Zealand fashion.

Metropol talks to Huffer founder Steve Dunstan about milestones and a new partnership with the Mental Health Foundation. How did the Huffer story begin? The want and need for an identity that represented the culture of board sports, predominately snowboarding and skateboarding, in 1997 between Queen Street Auckland and the mountains of the South Island. 21 years in business is a massive feat, let alone 21 years in an industry said to take no prisoners! Why do you think the Huffer brand has been such a success? Confidence, knowing who we are and not being scared to evolve and grow. Can you tell us a bit about the coveted A/W collection for 2019? A stronger more focused interpretation of functional streetwear, with continued evolution through technical fabrications in ‘street’ relevant aesthetic. How important is your new partnership with the Mental Health Foundation to you? I am very proud to start an ongoing relationship and to personally learn more about a subject that seems to be pushed under the rug. I am far from an expert in this area, but hopefully with a commitment of being a part it will help people start conversations. How would you describe the Huffer brand? Inclusive, confident and honest. What have been some of the company’s key milestones throughout the years? Growing from board sports; taking our DNA and applying it to a new dynamic environment/market; developing a women’s offering which is now 50 percent of our business; opening retail and enabling a tactile, organic home for real brand experiences; launching in Australia with a committed, strategic plan. What do the next 12 months have in store for you and the brand? The challege of growing the brand from scratch in new markets is a very different proposition to our current New Zealand business, but also positively effects our New Zealand business as we further ourselves and continue to hone our skills of pioneering product and making new friends.

Creating Summer Bodies

Taming tummies, refining rears and thinning thighs for more than one million people worldwide, the Cooltech process of freezing fat has arrived in Christchurch and is exclusively available at Encorė Cosmetic Clinic. Owner Dr Grant Bellaney says if you start your treatment now, you’ll see results in time for your summer holiday.

C

ooltech is European technology and comes with a larger range of adapters than other brands, meaning a more extensive range of body areas, including those with curved contours, can be treated. Available in 40 countries, the fat cooling process is hugely popular and is fast becoming the go-to treatment for spot reduction of fat in New Zealand. Cooltech freezes the fat cells which then break down and are expelled through the natural metabolic process. While Encorė Cosmetic Clinic offers the full range of cosmetic treatments, it does have a special focus on fat reduction. As well as Cooltech, Encorė also offers the more traditional tumescent liposuction and non-invasive fat reduction using heating with their TriLipo technology. TriLipo combined with Cooltech is known as the ‘fire and ice’ treatment. Encorė is the only clinic in Christchurch equipped to offer all three treatment options. The team at Encorė can advise clients on the best option or combination of options and client preference is the first consideration: the experienced team understands

that for some people, liposuction is not their prefered choice. The Cooltech process, or freezing of fat, can remove fat in specific stubborn pockets and is the clinics preferred non-invasive fat reduction treatment, as it has a higher patient satisfaction rate than TriLipo. At Encorė, aesthetic registered nurses can treat clients with Cooltech Monday to Friday. Treatments last around 70 minutes. Two adaptors can be used simultaneously, reducing treatment time. Most clients need 1-2 treatments 8-12 weeks apart. For most, one treatment is enough. Results are visible in 6-8 weeks, with a 95 percent satisfaction rate globally. Cooltech treatments are not painful but tingling or heat at the treatment points is possible and you can feel the vacuum pressure of the adaptors. Post-treatment, possible localised redness could take a few hours to subside. Short term side effects such as altered sensation or discomfort can occur. Find Encorė Cosmetic Clinic www.encorehealth.co.nz and 248 Papanui Road in Merivale Village where off-street parking is available. Phone: 03 3560214

Your piece of wardrobe art is raising money to provide hospice palliative care and support.”

Wardrobe art needed

Sue Bramwell, Nurse Maude’s General Manager of Marketing, says most people do it at least once in their lives and some on a regular basis. It’s acquiring wardrobe art, that piece of clothing that looked perfect in the shop but has hung, unworn, in your wardrobe from the day you brought it home.

“Even better, your piece of wardrobe art is raising money to provide hospice palliative care and support free of charge to our patients and their families.” “Everyone who donates to, or buys from us is directly supporting the Nurse Maude Hospice,” Sue says, “offering you a great way to cull and revamp your wardrobe without feeling bad about saying goodbye to those clothes, shoes or accessories that you’ll never wear”. While spring is not far away and summer soon after, the Nurse Maude Hospice Shops are still in need of good quality winter clothing, particularly women’s tops and jackets and larger sized women’s clothing.

HELP

Why is it important to seek help early for endometriosis? Endometriosis can seriously affect a woman’s quality of life, limiting what she does in her leisure time and sometimes preventing her from attending school or work. Treatments ranging from lifestyle changes to surgery will alleviate symptoms and may be needed to protect her fertility.

3.

How is endometriosis diagnosed? Endometriosis is a difficult disease to diagnose because you can’t see it on a scan and there is no blood test for it. We suspect it based on symptoms and family history but it can only be definitively diagnosed through laparoscopy (keyhole surgery). There are many symptoms, but it is most common in women who have painful periods that last more than a couple of days. Women should also seek help if their pain worsens or continues through the month. Not all pelvic pain is endometriosis and you definitely need to find out what’s going on.

4.

Where can I find out more about endometriosis? The website www.nzendo.org.nz has plenty of good information about endometriosis and services available for women with the disease. There is also information on the Oxford Women’s Health website and you can book an appointment with one of our specialists there too. Visit www. oxfordwomenshealth.co.nz/what-weoffer/endometriosis

IS AT HAND

Endometriosis affects one in ten New Zealand women, many of whom first experience symptoms as teenagers. Obstetrician and gynaecologist Janene Brown from Oxford Women’s Health shares her thoughts on this often debilitating condition and the importance of seeking help early.

At what stage do women typically come to see you with endometriosis symptoms? While greater awareness of the disease means we are seeing fewer new patients with advanced endometriosis, we still have patients who should have come to us much earlier. International studies show that it is often six or seven years before women finally receive specialist treatment. If anyone thinks they may have endometriosis, they should ask their GP for a referral to a gynaecologist, as early as possible, or they can simply book to see one of our specialists at Oxford Women’s Health.

Star light star bright By Tracey Edwardes

On Friday, 7 September, when North Canterbury skies will be their darkest under a new moon, the Oxford Observatory at Oxford Area School will host a public open night to view our closest celestial neighbours.

B

etween 7pm and 10pm, anyone can view four planets up close. On 31 July, Mars came its closest to earth since 2003, a mere 1.4 million kilometres away. People will be able to see it in detail, along with a bright crescent Venus, Jupiter and its moons, and Saturn’s unique rings. Our galaxy, the Milky Way, won’t seem so far away through the Meade 250mm Schmidt Cassegrain telescope, the school became the proud owner of in 2000, with a Lion Foundation grant.

“We took this opportunity to build an observatory at the school, which was completed in 2006, after Mars was the closest to Earth in 60,000 years in 2003,” says James Moffat, a passionate astronomer for 18 years. “There was a huge response from community.” He was assisted by the school’s former physics teacher Eric Vermatt and the late Clive Rowe. Clive was a well-respected, notable star in the astronomical community, who had the

dome modelled from a fibreglass mould that replicated Dunedin Observatory. Aside from hosting educational school groups, interested parties of up to 20 people can arrange a night of close encounters, for a nominal cost. Booking is not required for the open night, just a $2 donation. In case of cloudy conditions, Oxford Observatory’s Facebook page will advise beforehand or contact James on 022 364 1959.

A royal flush

1.

2.

Chances are you’ve heard the term ‘the Meghan Markle effect’ over the past few months. It was used to describe the fashionable clout wielded by our newest royal, the Duchess of Sussex, in the lead up to her May wedding to Prince Harry, as fans flocked to copy everything she wore.

B

ut the biggest impact Meghan Markle is making is on the bridal industry. Her pared-back elegance is influencing everything from dress design, to décor. Even culinary creations are getting the royal treatment in the upcoming bridal season, after an estimated 47 million people tuned into the royal wedding from the US and UK alone. On her wedding day, the duchess looked exceptional in a white silk boat necked gown designed by Clare Waight Keller – the artistic director of Givenchy – followed by an elegant white, halterneck silk crepe creation by Stella McCartney for her evening gown. Timeless and chic, it’s not surprising this understated style is coming through strong in wedding gowns across the globe. Gone are the detailed embellishment we’ve seen in previous years, even the detailed lacework of Kate

5.

Middleton’s 2011 frock has been eschewed in favour of simplicity Meanwhile, tiaras, capes and sharp pantsuits – Meghan’s signature style – have all been making a stylish appearance in receptions and afterparties the world over. Wedding cakes, venues and even the decorations bestowed upon them are being influenced by the Meghan Markle effect, with a clean, neutral colour palette and simple, minimalist design coming through. When it comes to the cake, white frosting and white flowers are increasingly making the cut. With fruit cakes traditionally being served up at royal weddings – designed to keep long enough to be served at the christening of the couple’s first child – the lemon elderflower cake was something of a departure from the norm. But then that’s not surprising from a newly anointed royal who is all about breaking down the barriers.

Culinary Capers When it comes to weddings of 2018/2019, it’s all about making it your own. So not surprising then, this clever customisation is making its way through to the menu.

lthough it’s the sentiment of the day that wins out in the end, marking your commitment as a couple, fact is, how it all comes together is representative of the promise you are there to make. When it comes to making your matrimonial mark, menus and desserts play an important role in the overall vibe of the day and they’re getting more creative every year. Expect to see more DIY food bars at weddings of 2019, with an increasingly unique mix of foods. More couples are steering clear of the traditional three course meal and serving comfort foods such as pasta, pizza and burgers. Brunch-themed weddings are trending in a very big way. A less expensive option, they’re featuring everything from street style food caravans through to make your own meal stations and with that, we’re seeing a big uptake in dessert bars. From rustic homemade tarts to elegant French macarons, delectable desserts not only satisfy the sweet tooth of the most hardened guest, but they add personality to a very personal day. Tie your sweet treat into your overall theme, make it something special that is specific to you as a couple, or perhaps create a coffee and tea bar. The world is your culinary oyster.

cuisine This year’s Veuve Clicquot Long Lunch at Rata in Queenstown celebrated 200 years of the champagne and featured the theme Colourama. One of New Zealand’s most beloved celebrity chefs – Josh Emett – unleashed his culinary creativity on the prestigious event. I managed to get a few questions to the maestro himself. I watch as you are instructing your team in the kitchen. How much does team play a part in serving up 100 people at the same time? Teamwork in the kitchen is hugely important and is how the kitchen at Rata executes successful events like this one. At a glance you see a number of individual chefs managing different aspects of a dish, but at some point, they all need to come together to execute the finished dish, so timing and planning is everything. It is a great feeling when the team is performing at their full potential and a huge amount of fun. How do you find new inspiration for the event? This year for inspiration we drew heavily on the Colourama theme, which Veuve Clicquot focused on for much of the event. The great thing about this theme is it allowed us to play with colours and textures in the kitchen, and plate up four beautiful and natural dishes. I’m not into coloured dyes in food – I think you can achieve beautiful, multi-coloured dishes using natural ingredients and that what’s we did. Inspiration for events like this can come from anywhere. In Queenstown, it’s impossible not to have the menu at Rata draw from the beautiful landscape of the South Island and that comes out in every aspect of the dining experience, from the suppliers we use, to the produce we feature and the decor in the restaurant. By the time it comes to presentation all the hard work’s been done. How hard are the days in the kitchen prior to Clicquot? When running an event on such a scale that

requires numerous intricate and detailed dishes being plated up all at once, it does put a huge amount of pressure on the kitchen to be organised and prepared. We have a new Head Chef at Rata, Jonathan Williams, who did an amazing job organising the prep in the lead up to the event, which allowed both lunches to flow smoothly and go off without a hitch. How many years has it been now and how do you feel about your relationship with Clicquot in the Snow? I think it’s a relationship that just keeps growing and proving more powerful. I feel lucky that my business partner, Fleur Caulton and I have been able to be a part of Clicquot in the Snow for many years now and it’s got to the point that the Rata Long Lunch is a staple in many people’s annual calendars. We have seen more and more demand for the event each season – which gives me confidence that we’re on the right track and offering people a unique and genuine dining experience that they really look forward too and enjoy. I’m currently driving the new BMW X2 courtesy of BMW. They had good presence in this year’s event as a sponsor. What do you like about your affiliation? I have been a BMW ambassador for six years now and it is an association that I am extremely proud of. We support each other’s brands on many different levels and in many different ways. I have owned several BMWs over the years and love the driving experience they offer. Their on-board technology is outstanding.

On a Roll By Melinda Collins

The sweet little treat on everyone’s lips, Thai rolled ice cream – or stir-fried ice cream – is the latest in a long line of street food inspired selections to hit the culinary consciousness.

T

hroughout the world, small ice cream parlours are drawing big crowds, to watch as clever artisan producers make magic; the process almost as fun as the eating. A cup of flavored milk-based liquid is first poured onto a cold metal disk, not unlike a large pizza pan, which is then cooled underneath using dry ice or coolant. As the base freezes, it’s manipulated with little paddles, spreading the forming ice cream out across the pan, before it is turned into rolls using a spatula. Add some nice-looking toppings and voilà, rolled ice cream.

Although it’s the Insta-cred of this clever concoction that has undoubtedly given rise to its increasing popularity, the fact that this cool new kid on the culinary block is available in a wide range of flavours and toppings just further adds to its sweet success. Believed to have originated in Thailand, rolled ice cream has become an intercontinental fad. So if you see it when you’re out and about as we head into the warmer months, why not give it a go. After all, I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream and this ice cream is on a roll.

on the menu,” Jax says. When the chance came up to use one giant truffle in a special brew, Jax finally managed to twist their friends’ arms over a couple of beers at the taproom. The rest she has “left up to the brewing experts… but with the odd tasting of course”. Oscar McCauley, who works with his parents at the Brew Moon, says there are unique challenges in working with an ingredient the brewery has never used before – and an expensive one at that. “We want to find a point where the truffle character is clear and complements the beer, but also not add too much. The flavours marry up nicely, so now it’s just a matter of adjusting the amount of truffle to find that sweet spot,” he says. It’s not the first time Kings Truffles has collaborated with a brewery. “We found a large one a few years back that went into a porter – Nerissimo – done by Garage Project,” Jax says. However, she is happy to see this one being used so close to home. The brewery released the extra-special ale at Beervana in Wellington on August 10 and 11, Oscar says. “New Zealand’s best breweries are producing all sorts of weird and wonderful beer styles, so it was a great opportunity to see how this brew stacked up.” And the Brew Moon might even consider doing it again, he adds. “There is a great truffle scene here in North Canterbury, so it would be amazing to be able to make this a yearly seasonal brew. We [just] can’t promise that we will be working with such an enormous truffle next time.”

T

he whopping 1.37kg black Périgord truffle was dug up by Jax Lee, General Manager of Kings Truffles in Waipara, after her five-year-old dog Freddy sniffed it out beside an oak tree. It is the largest truffle found in New Zealand on record. “At first it didn’t look like anything out of the ordinary, but once I got it out of the ground I was gobsmacked,” Jax says. “We seem to have a handful of big ones every season, but not to this scale. I think the good amount of autumn rain helped this one along.” The next challenge was to clean it up, extremely carefully and make sure it was put to good use. Jax had just the place in mind. The family-owned Brew Moon Brewing Company, started by Kieran McCauley and Belinda Gould and located down the road in Amberley, has now added shavings from the record-setting truffle to a golden ale. “My husband and I consider Brew Moon our local, so have always pestered them about making a truffle beer and having truffled pizzas

African Influence Asian flavours have been leading the culinary charge for the last few years, with vindaloo, Thai curry and sushi almost staples of the Kiwi diet. And, while Asian cuisine isn’t going anywhere, we’re looking to what’s next in spicy, flavourful, ethnic cuisine and it seems the big, bold flavours of Africa are increasingly making their palatable appearance.

W

ith 54 countries making up Africa and cultural influence from the Middle East, Mediterranean Europe and years of British, French, German, Belgian, Spanish, and Italian colonisation, African cuisine is as diverse as its people. With much of its flavour originating from spices, meat, grains and vegetables, there’s little cream and butter in African cuisine. Stews and tagines are made with fish, beef, chicken, or marinated goat. Chapati bread and sourdough-risen injera are popular and, although ingredients

Africa is filled with a wide array of beautiful countries, all with their own beautiful cuisine. Talent Scouting: An Art, not a Numbers Game The lifeblood of a great business is people. All sorts of people. And in an industry like mine, it’s a constant search for individuals with attributes that will add up to an exceptional realtor. Over the years I’ve witnessed numerous industry techniques for identifying those attributes. Advertising of all types and across all sorts of media, incentives, seminars, scholarships, isometric testing (which I personally dislike) and shoulder tapping. Every one of these methods will have been responsible for the recruitment of someone special or outstanding, but from my own experience it’s a mixture of all these methods, and an ongoing relationship throughout the proceedings, that is most advantageous. Some companies can add significantly to their pool of applicants (and influence the age demographic) by offering a form of salary. The positives of this include providing newly licensed consultants with a buffer to take the edge off a ‘payment on results only’ occupation. The flip side of this is that it is often followed by the retrenchment of consultant numbers once the supportive income has concluded and the reality of having to work within a commission-based framework hits. I’ve always considered recruitment an opportunity to meet new people and find out

what makes them tick. To discover their goals and dreams whilst showing exactly how I can help deliver those expectations.

that you expect but has everything you require. Magic!

For me, it’s definitely a ‘quality not quantity’ equation and the ‘numbers’ you need to work to as a real estate consultant are meaningless if there’s no fire in your belly.

I do what I’ve always done. I set the standard, I light the way and I do whatever is necessary to enable someone who wants to be successful achieve their goal. Hence coaching three of Canterburys top five consultants including the No.1.

So, what do I look for? 1) Attitude. A beautiful, open attitude with a sense of commitment rather than entitlement and a passion for service beyond yourself. Nurses often come into this category. As I did. 2) Curiosity. Wanting to know how things tick and what your part in all of it is. How can you add value to the business and your clients? 3) Energy. The energy to always be on time, to work harder, longer and faster, whilst not forgetting that life is about family as much as your profession. Mine is not an occupation in which you can ‘shoot the breeze’ or just ‘see how it goes’. Energy is imperative. 4) Communication. If you can’t communicate it’s heckishly hard to sell, so head up, eyes bright and great communication is a biggie. But sometimes none of this is obvious and you meet a quiet, gentle soul who does nothing

So, what do I do in all of this?

Funny how competitors (as there is always competition for talented people) reframe this as pressure, turning it into a slight rather than a positive. Pressure exists where performance is required. I like to think a wise head brings clarity to that process. So, with my wise head and long tenure I’d like to say that when you are thinking about a new career, push past stereotypes and contact the best in the business, not just the obvious. If you do, then we’re sure to meet and, you never know, it might just be the best move you ever make!

Craving Curves

Urban Jungle By Melinda Collins

The quarter acre dream has long since given way to the 300 square metre plot of subdivided soil. But you don’t need to possess a large space to have a garden – or gardens – all of your own. There are plenty of ways to incorporate an urban jungle into your life no matter how micro your city plot is.

1. 2.

Raising the bar Raised gardens are a great option, with their custom-made versatility enabling you to fit any size or shape – fill that under-utilised space along the front of the garage or fence line or you could even try window boxes. But it’s not just versatility these raised gardens offer, as they enable you to counteract poor soil conditions and there are generally herbs, flowers and vegetables available to meet the conditions no matter where your raised gardens may be – whether it’s sheltered, low-light, or hot and bright.

Vertically challenged If ground space is at a premium, why not lift the garden up from the ground and get a little vertically challenged? Yes, we’re talking about a hanging option. You can hang store-bought or custom-made planters on the fence, or even on an under-utilised external wall on the house itself.

3. 4. 5.

Food for thought Edible hanging vegetable or herb gardens are increasingly popular in our urban spaces. Just ensure the space has plenty of sunlight and at least some degree of protection from the elements. Wooden pallets are an easily accessible option. Just line the bottom of each rung with weed mat, fill with potting mix and you’re away laughing.

Hang ups Perhaps you could make a metal framework to hang planters from, attach with string or rope to existing structures such as a carport, or these can be hung from hooks in entranceways or porches. There are hanging planter grids on the market, that you attach small pots to. They can be great ways to bring life to empty spaces, such as an empty fence or external wall.

Contain it Or why not re-use containers – anything from plastic-lined wooden crates, old car tires, plastic buckets, trash cans and wooden pallets to polypropylene bags or small-scale hydroponic systems. There are plenty of ways to utilise containers of some description to house your plants and, with the popularity of upcycled items, it’s a great way to add some cool cred to your abode.

hether it’s a balcony, rooftop, windowsill or a small strip of under-utilised space along a fence line, planter boxes or hanging gardens can make the most of any urban space. In fact, these clever options can make use of land that is essentially unusable in any other way. So why not take your green thumbs to one of these clever options, after all, as they say, good things come in small packages.

Spring in your step As we head into September, it’s not surprising that many of us are itching to pack away the winter warmers and introduce a new aesthetic into the home.

ADAIRS SPRING 2018 COLLECTION

hen it comes to a new aesthetic, spring certainly brings the goods. We look how to bring a fresh new look to your spring abode. Representative of life and new beginnings, spring is the ultimate opportunity to let florals and greenery run rampant throughout the home. Seasonal blooms bring an uplifting feel to interiors, so why not incorporate some fresh garden blooms or plants to your space? If keeping them alive is a cause for concern, fake it till you make it with some realistic looking plastic flowers and plants.

Timber furniture and accessories are a great way to bring the outside in for spring, while you could use natural items such as plants, branches and nuts as decoration. Of course, cushions, drapes, art and other accessories are also an easy way to incorporate spring and its relevant colours and textures into your home. Try some pastel tones, floral prints and botanical patterns. Likewise, a pop of colour is a fun and easy way to bring some spring energy into your living room. Consider painting a key piece of furniture or incorporating some bright new artworks on the wall.

‘Wow’ Factor

The

A passion for excellence and a commitment to delivering the best service to its customers is the driving force behind the team at ARC Tiles and Interiors.

ere is a business that doesn’t just keep you up with the Joneses; it keeps you streaks ahead of the Joneses! If your desire is to have the ‘wow’ factor on your walls and ceilings, then a visit to the showroom is a must. Owner Rajesh Thakur is particularly excited to talk about the company’s latest products of digital and 3D tiles. “Digital tiles give the opportunity to play with patterns and themes throughout your home, while 3D tiles make for maximum impact; visually they’re stunning! We’re proud to have been first to introduce 3D tiles to New Zealand.” Digital Wall Tiles are the perfect room enhancer; their aesthetic appeal is undeniable as they are the quintessential of style and elegance. Their less water absorption rate, abrasion resistance, water capacity and ability to work in with various surface design options makes them a very popular choice for wall interiors. They are also easy to keep clean and free from dust due to the protective surface layer – therefore, an ideal tile for kitchens and bathrooms. The arrival of 3D tiles has brought a whole new look to tiled surfaces; they add drama, draw the eye and make walls pop. The patterns of 3D are as beautiful and varied as you could wish for, from cushioned soft dimples

and undulating curves to waves or bubbles patterns that bring a sense of movement to an otherwise blank canvas. Whatever accent colour you decide on for your 3D tiles, the gentle interplay of shadows as daylight gives over to dusk will bring its own magic into your surroundings. So, now that you’re aware of the most ultra-chic tiles in town, and where to find them, your next step is to think about where to go and who to ask about getting the prep work done on your walls and ceilings, not to mention the very exciting tiling. Wonderfully, ARC Tiles and Interiors has that sorted, too. They are your one-stop shop, and they’re with you every step of the way. “We take care of all your Gib work, plastering, painting and tiling,” Rajesh says. In fact, Rajesh and the team are so confident in their products and services that should they not have in stock what you had in mind, they will do everything to ensure your vision becomes a reality. “That is how we’ve built such long-term relationships with our customers,” Rajesh says, “by going that extra mile.” For more information phone 022 6220415, email rajesh@ arctilesandinteriors.co.nz or visit www.arctilesandinteriors.co.nz. Exceptional Sydenham Space It would be hard not to feel uplifted and inspired when you walk into the store at 7 Elgin Street in Sydenham.

he sights, scents and overall vibe of this central city space are warm and inviting, but then that’s not surprising of the destination store which has, at its heart, a philosophy to “create timeless, evolving interiors that give enduring pleasure”. Kit and Caboodle is filled with an exceptional range of old and new furniture, accessories, lighting, soft furnishings and beautiful wallpapers. There are antiques sourced from throughout New Zealand, set against beautiful new pieces imported from around the world. But this exceptional Sydenham space is just the beginning of the Kit and Caboodle journey, because this store is so much more than just a store. Predominantly an interior design consultancy, Owner and Interior Design Consultant, Alex Marie and Interior Design Consultant Andrea Tudehope can provide advice, alongside the beautiful range of furnishings. The design duo can take care of as little or as much as you would like, from decorating plans through to procurement and from wholeroom or house concepts, through to just adding some finishing touches to pull your look together. Accessorising for example, can make the difference between a house and a home, Alex says. “We can help people stage their bookcases and objects to make them stand out for people. It’s not necessarily about new things, but

how things are grouped and styled that can make all the difference.” Together they carry out a lot of hand-painting and finishing, which enables them to be able to tailor items to customers’ needs. “This enables you to get a one-off piece and ensures your decorating isn’t a paint by numbers affair,” she explains. “We can individualise items and make them completely unique to you. We really enjoy that side of what we do.” This season there are plenty of rich colours, from emerald greens through to mustards and golds, There’s beautiful gold framed furniture in the Hollywood regency style and monochromatic themes are fading away as we increasingly crave colour and pattern in the home. Meanwhile, natural fibres are ever-popular and wallpapers are an inexpensive way of making big impact in small spaces, bringing life and colour to your home. Although trends are new and fun to play with, what is more important than jumping on the trend bandwagon is that you love something. “Things date and that can make furnishing expensive,” she says. “If you invest wisely in things you love, you’re less likely to be disappointed and you will find you love your home much more longer term.” Find Kit and Caboodle at 7 Elgin Street, Sydenham, visit the new website at www.kitandcaboodle. co.nz or phone 03-379 6575. alling smack bang between function and form, there’s a buffet to suit almost every space. No matter what your style you’ll be able to find a piece to suit. Just be sure to get something that will fulfil your needs, whether it’s aesthetic, storage space, or something else. Taking centre stage in the dining room, a buffet can offer space for special occasion tableware, and double as a serving space for drinks or desserts. In the lounge it can be the pedestal for a statement lamp or make the perfect partnership with a bold piece of art. But it may just be the hallway where the sideboard comes into its own, adding a powerful punch to this long, lean laneway of the home.

antabrians have had to adjust to significant upheaval and adapt to a new reality, living in the unique environment that is postquake Christchurch. We have spent the past eight years clambering our way uphill to reach the turning point in the mammoth task. Reflecting on success recently, I have been reminded that nothing of significance ever comes easy. It is natural to look around at those making their mark, thinking how easy it all appears at face value and assuming that fate had dealt them a generous hand. Ambition can be master and maker; the famous quote, ‘When the going gets tough, the tough get going’ was penned to describe the somewhat perilous journey that takes place when the strong work harder and harder to meet the challenge, the more difficult the situation becomes. These words have been a faithful companion to me during the toughest times because they go right to the heart of what ambition really stands for – perseverance. The beauty of perseverance is that it pushes beyond the physical and mental bounds of natural capability and enables success from a broad range of contenders. Metropol loves to hear and write about stories of ambition from all walks of life. Whether that is the inspiring women we have featured across the front of the publication, through to the ambitious teams which are at the forefront of the city’s rebuild. Metropol’s Build section is all about celebrating success across all facets of the industry, from small operators making a big impact, through to the House of the Year winners who are the city’s streetscapes. In turning the pages of today’s issue, keep ambition in mind and enjoy the stories in this context.

Riverside Eats By Paige Baxter

Bringing figurative and literal life to the heart of the city is the remit of the Riverside Market, currently in the works within the central city.

T

he new Riverside Market will be the centre of attention, but for all the right reasons, attracting people from near and far to the former Re: Start Mall site bordered by Cashel and Lichfield streets. The seven-day indoor market will house 30 independent food outlets and 40 fresh produce stalls. Connected to the five-building market will be the Riverside Lanes, where locals and tourists can have

the boutique fashion shopping experience plus more options for eating out. Construction on this mammoth project is expected to start in October and take a year. When it’s all said and done, the development should be the talk of the town as it’s filling up thousands of visitors’ stomachs and bags with local eats and fresh produce. s the dynamics of our city continue to change, so to does the diversity of those that live and work in our city. But should we be doing more? In September, we mark an important milestone, celebrating 125 years of New Zealand women becoming the first in the world to win the right to vote. Like many things, Christchurch led the way in 1893 with Kate Sheppard, in the face of fierce opposition, gathering signatures of nearly 32,000 women to demonstrate the groundswell of support for the suffrage cause. Christchurch continues to lead the way with a growing number of leadership roles held by women across our city including The Chamber, Westland Milk, Trimble Navigation, Ballantynes, Christchurch NZ, The Press and the Christchurch City Council. Diversity and inclusion have been proven to lead to better commercial results – yet many organisations fail to see it as part of their overall strategy. For example: - Companies in the top quartile of gender diversity are 15% more likely to financially outperform their industry and 38% more likely to have a higher than average market share - Companies with at least one female executive outperform the stockmarket by 37% - Companies with at least 30% female executives outperform the stockmarket by 173% - Companies with female board members are 26% more profitable than companies with all-male board. As we acknowledge and celebrate 125 years of Women’s Suffrage, you may like to consider what you are doing as an organisation to promote and support diversity in your workplace.

O

ne of the highlights of the past few weeks in Parliament has been seeing the legislation that will deliver the Canterbury Earthquakes Insurance Tribunal introduced to the House. I’m delighted that we are making good progress on our pre-election promises and that we’re able to provide Cantabrians with an option to resolve outstanding claims. Over the past few years I have continued to hear from so many people from all over the city about their struggle to finally resolve their claim and get on with their lives. As Minister Responsible for the Earthquake Commission, I have made it a priority to ensure this Government can enable homeowners to reach settlement on long-standing residential insurance claims, including with Southern Response and the Earthquake Commission. The tribunal will do this, with the ability to award costs or general damages and to appoint independent expert advisers to assist the tribunal in understanding technical aspects of a claim. We also recognise that each claim is unique, and that’s why there is flexibility to tailor the tribunal’s approach to the needs of each case. The tribunal will also act proactively, managing cases throughout the process and setting timeframes that must be followed as claims progress. Delays have been long and frustrating for many, so providing closure is vital for Cantabrians who want to get on with their lives. The tribunal will make a significant difference to those who are still awaiting resolution.

hether you are a small or large organisation, change begins with leadership. Your brand reflects your organisation. How is your business perceived? How do you want to be perceived? Do you stand out in a competitive world? Returning to Christchurch after working in Sydney, it is very apparent that these are key questions in business today. Our new world is upon us and I am excited to be part of this change. I’ve been leading marketing teams in Sydney for the past seven years and was able to experience first-hand what life is like in a fiercely competitive market. We’re at such an exciting time in Christchurch right now. The rate of change has never been faster, innovation is redefining how we do things and we are at a point where one generation of business leaders is ready to hand the ropes over to the next. We see businesses wanting to understand how they can evolve their messaging to bring what they have to the rest of the people in Christchurch, to New Zealand and the world. For many, it begins with understanding the internal brand of your business. How is your brand perceived by your customers and how do you bring everyone in your business along on this new journey, no matter the size of the business? In a sea of marketing campaigns, how do you stand out when, let’s be fair, we’ve never had more choice when it comes to, well, anything?

hen we released our vision for Cathedral Square two months ago, we highlighted the significant investment already being made in the area by the private and public sectors. Since then, that investment has become even more evident. Nexus Point’s Spark building on the south side of the Square is now out of the ground and the adjacent site of Redson Corporation’s new Aotea Gifts building is being prepared. On the north side of the Square, the Convention Centre is really starting to take shape and the new central library (Tūranga) is due to open in October. There is also site maintenance underway around the Anglican Cathedral. Another development since we released our vision has been the announcement that Justin Murray is the independent Chair of the joint venture company that will oversee the reinstatement of the Cathedral. We said in June that, coupled with the Cathedral’s reinstatement, the regeneration of the square would need to be delivered in stages as funding and other developments allow; but returning it to its original purpose as a gathering place for local people and visitors must be front and centre. ChristchurchNZ’s Explore Christchurch campaign to help stimulate economic activity in the central business district during the winter months, which is traditionally a quieter time for the city, is an excellent example of how we can make that happen – and not just in Cathedral Square. It also highlights that there is a role for all of us to play in the regeneration of our city.

A

s a recent arrival on the regeneration scene, the most common question I have been asked is naturally – why did you want the job as Ōtākaro Limited Chief Executive? As an engineer I have worked in New Zealand, Australia, UK and Asia in a variety of project and business leadership roles. I have had the opportunity to be involved in the likes of Transmission Gully in Wellington and City Rail Link in Auckland, the A$12b Melbourne Metro Rail Project and the Channel Tunnel in England. They are city-shaping projects that improve lives and that’s what has brought me to Christchurch. The scale and variety of work going on here is unparalleled and the outcome will be as well. It’s an opportunity that professionally and personally was too hard to let pass by. There’s still a lot to do, but as someone who has seen a lot of big projects start and finish, I can assure you Christchurch is about to turn a significant corner. All of Ōtākaro’s roadworks and the Avon River Precinct promenade will be done by the end of the year, meaning a dramatic reduction in the number of fences and cones around the CBD. At the same time construction has started on the Metro Sports Facility and is progressing well on Te Pae. The welcome mat is also out for the return of central city residents with townhouses and apartments in the One Central development now for sale. It’s a place I’m excited to now call home.

M

ost Cantabrians won’t know that they live in a city that boasts the country’s second largest tech sector, contributing around $2.4 billion of GDP and exporting $1.1 billion annually. Next time you’re driving through central city, you might look out for the EPIC Innovation Campus on Manchester Street where more than 250 ICT / hightech employees are housed. Over on Ash Street you’ll find 150 entrepreneurs and innovators are working away at BizDojo on technologies as diverse as VR through to Geospatial apps. Over at UC, you’ll find the father and son team of Professors Phil and Anthony Butler whose MARS x-ray scanner could revolutionise the diagnosis of diseases such as cancer and save lives globally. They recently scanned their very first human whose images were viewed more than 30 million times on Twitter and covered by the NY Times. Driving and nurturing a dynamic startup, entrepreneurial and innovation ecosystem is critical for Christchurch and Canterbury and is one of the primary goals of Christchurch’s newest partnership between Ministry of Awesome and Ara Institute of Canterbury. From 15 October, both organisations are joining forces to establish a jointly powered startup and innovation hub that will form the cornerstone of Christchurch’s innovation ecosystem. This hub will fuel Christchurch’s global positioning as a world class startup, innovation, and tech city. The door is wide open for startups, entrepreneurs, and innovators to reach out and be part of this newly formed community. Find out more on www.ministryofawesome.com.

last four years for those keen on a closeup tour of the progressing inner city. There are limited spaces on the next free 2-hour tour on 23 September. We’ll view construction sites, completed apartments and townhouses, and anchor projects such as the Convention Centre and Cultural and Art Precinct, with an overview of what is involved in buying in the inner city. Since the quakes, 1,200 apartments were demolished, making way for the new, which meet engineering, acoustic and fire-safety requirements. Current bank regulations enforce developers to first sell more than 60 percent off the plans before building can commence. However, buyers’ deposits must stay safely in a solicitor’s trust account until built. We have already presold the Juno boutique apartments at 36 Cranmer Square and there’s under half the new Latimer Apartments on Barbadoes Street still available. I’ve spent 15 years living in or close to the inner city and own a number of apartments. It’s simplicity of lifestyle. Spare time won’t disappear through weeding, maintenance and renovations. Explore, go to shows, expos and festivals instead – as the city literally becomes your backyard. Ingrid received another regional honour – the Canterbury Chapter Recognition Kitchen 2018 Award for a stunning kitchen which also received the national Kitchen Distinction $40k - $60k 2018 Award. Part of a new build in Akaroa, the subtle but striking design stays true to the minimalist aesthetic of the wider abode, letting the beautiful surrounding views take centre stage. The Canterbury Chapter Recognition Bathroom Runner-up 2018 Award was awarded to Emma Morris of Eterno Design. Her design also won a major award on the night – the Supreme Bathroom Design Runner-up 2018 Award. The architectural master ensuite features a dynamic contrast between its high-pitched and low ceilings which create a dramatic aesthetic that carries through to the spacious, functional bathroom dressed in black Italian porcelain.

Located inside a luxurious, artfilled new build, her kitchen design reflects the stunning architecture of the home and is sensitive to the proportions of the property. Judges called the design a show stopping space. “Sophistication has been amplified through the use of lighting.” Emma Gourdie of Lume Design won the Kitchen Distinction $40k - $60k 2018 Runner-up Award for a cool industrial

It has a more refined aesthetic with a strong emphasis placed on the use of different materials and textures – brushed stainless steel, timber veneer, paint lacquer and matte black steel and stone achieve a cohesive look. With more than 25 years building experience under his belt, Callum’s knowledge of the building industry is second to none. “We work closely with the customer to find out exactly what they want. We are able to translate between the home owners and the architect/designer and suppliers at the other end. We also collaborate and work closely with all professions and trades to make sure we produce the best possible outcome for our client.” With Callum and his team of builders hard at work, it’s Bonnie behind the scenes who helps to make sure everything runs smoothly. It’s this level of dedication which gives Schenk Ltd a considerable portfolio, containing many highquality building projects. A recent highlight is the new home of Jude and Geoff Marks. Situated in the growing Rolleston community, the two-storey home contains plenty of features to give this home a totally unique character. Inside, the unique application of Formance panelling not only gives the home a stylish edge but is more durable and warmer than traditional framing. This exterior is complemented by rustic cedar panelling surrounding the front door. Plus, a four-car garage with a panelled door optimises space with a pull-down ladder allowing access to an upper storage area. Inside there are four bedrooms, two up and two down, each illuminated from dawn till dusk due to the expansive windows; across the hall, an open plan kitchen and dining area, with a 4.8 x 2.4m pantry. The stairs are simplistic and contain pelmet lighting, capable of illuminating your ascent at night. Upstairs the living area is complete with a spectacular view of your surroundings. Founder, Kenneth F Weaver with June MacIntosh celebrating her 26 years of residency.

A Kenneth FWeaver Trust LOW COST ACCOMMODATION SUPPORT

When avid volunteer and Christchurch resident June MacIntosh was in a bit of a bind and couldn’t keep up with payments for her accommodation, she wasn’t sure where she could afford to live.

78 August 30, 2018 Metropol

t the time, she was lending a hand frequently at a local kitchen where she and a friend fed the homeless. June’s volunteer work meant the world to her. So when a friend told her about Kenneth Weaver Trust’s affordable flats, she knew it would be the right fit for her because it would enable her to continue volunteering. The Kenneth F. Weaver Trust Incorporated proudly owns and operates 29 quality rental units that house tenants for a reasonable rate and June is happily one of the residents living there. “Mr. Weaver made me most welcome,” she says. After 26 years of living in the property, June says she couldn’t be happier about her time there. She receives just the right amount of privacy and has still been able to make her flat feel like her own home. Now that June is 85 years old, the flat in Kenneth F. Weaver Trust’s building is even more important to her than ever,

because it allows her to receive help with maintenance and house tasks like changing light bulbs that can be a challenge for her. Plus she has the benefit of being a part of a small community. June says her neighbors don’t intrude on her, but they are happy to lend her a hand whenever she may need it. “I don’t think [any future tenants] could do better,” she adds. Not just anyone can live in one of these units. Applicants must be 60 years old or older, possess less than $25,000 in cash and truly be in need of quality accommodation. When tenants are approved, they’re set for life, unless they must vacate due to needing resthome care or something similar. Established in the mid-‘70s, Kenneth Weaver and his trust have been able to help many happy residents just like the very grateful June. Find out more at www.kennethfweavertrust.co.nz.

or the Gold winning home in Fendalton, which was also awarded the prestigious Gold Reserve Award for being in the top 100 homes in the country, 450 cubic metres of concrete went into its construction. With five-plus bedrooms, four-plus bathrooms and three living areas, a suspended concrete floor slab on the second storey minimises sound in the house, while still maximising the ceiling height on the floor below. Other features include an indoor cedar sauna and totara wood ceiling. The natural stone fireplace and bespoke timber joinery are design statements, along with the floating engineered timber staircase. Both the kitchen and bathrooms are the epitome of modern, elegant styling with high-end fittings. There is a state-of-the-art heating system with many chambers carefully constructed to be hidden from view. Joinery manufacturer Advanced Joinery has since gone on to win the NZ Supreme Award for the Craftsman Manufacturer

of Bathroom Joinery at the recent NKBA Awards. Overlooking Little Akaloa beach, an extensive renovation has transformed a traditional Kiwi bach into a high-end architectural home worthy of bronze. The house, clad in Shadowclad and cedar, is completely sympathetic to its surroundings. Interior features include timber flooring and Italian tiles, a cedar timber entrance door and a detailed cedar staircase. The home also sports an outdoor entertainment area with open fire, entertainment centre and an out-of-the wind spa pool area. A large structurally engineered car deck 4m above the ground links to the driveway to provide generous flat offstreet parking. Investing in exceptional

A great working relationship, working to time and budget plus communicating well, is the mantra at McBride Construction. Director Karl McBride says that while others might say they place a premium on communication, this company’s core philosophy is to communicate consistently and with clarity, then back it with performance.

T

he focus is in on repairs and renovations for homeowners and also on buying properties including ‘as is where is’ houses in order to turn them into modern and viable insured homes. Karl says project sizes run the gamut from small to very large and the company specialises in levelling houses and replacing foundations, working closely

with engineers and designers. The team has a passion for restoring villas and character homes, plus fitting out character homes to give them a contemporary feel. Their expertise and ‘can do’ attitude sees them called upon to help people left with unsatisfactory or unfinished jobs.

A tight-knit team of 12, the site crew includes four fully qualified builders. There are plasterers and painters in the in-house team too, so clients can rely on a great quality finish. With his name over the door, Karl is hands-on refining your plans with clients and brings in the company’s own office team to work with clients on pricing and the process. Experienced Project Manager Tom overseas the build and Karl himself checks the whole job over before handover to the client. “We are not a big machine and I stay engaged with the homeowner throughout,” Karl says. A project of magnificence By Rhonda Mitchell

T

At awards night, one judge noted that on crossing the threshold of ‘Fendalton House’, they realised immediately the scope and quality of the venture. And so it came to pass that Takahe Construction scooped the Renovation over $1 million Gold Award, the Supreme Renovation Award, plus the Interior Design and Outdoor Living Awards, in the 2018 New Zealand Master Builders House of the Year Regional Competition.

akahe Directors Tim Forman and Calvin Cocks say the project began as an earthquake repair, with the client quietly mentioning

some changes for later. More than half of the property was relevelled, a large percentage of the interior wall linings were removed, along with downstairs timber

flooring. They rebuilt the tennis court, squash court and pool, and replaced the existing spa room with a gym – with the spa now residing within the swimming

pool – and re-paved the entire hard surface. But that was simply the beginning. MAP Architects designed the renovation, which included installing steel beams to create larger openings in interior and exterior walls. The house was rewired to an automated system which can control lights, aircon, home audio, television, stereo, gates, pool heating, floor heating and even the towel rails, while the audio system incorporates 18 different speaker zones. Interiors feature dark oak floor and ceiling joinery, and Carrara Gioia marble lines the entrance hall and master ensuite bathroom. All the lights and speakers are fitted flush with the ceilings, so they don’t distract from the elegance of the rooms. The owners chose basalt stone to surround the pool and Atlantic Flame Stone for the balance of the outdoor area. Calvin’s favourite feature is the 4.8m-high oak ceiling in the formal lounge. It’s invisibly fixed with the Fastmount clip system that is used on superyachts! Project Foreman Lucas Abbot says the 70sqm outdoor room is a standout for him. It features a fully retractable louvre

roof, full height bi-folding doors, an inbuilt stainless steel and stone barbeque and pizza oven, seven outdoor heaters and six speakers on pivots, with the television also on a pivot. The whole of the outdoor room is fully waterproofed. “It was the job of a lifetime because we were able to form an amazing relationship with client and architect,” Lucas says. “The client was so focused on the quality and detail, and we had many meetings to discuss details, placing and interaction of elements. Also, our partnerships with our subtrades including Swinnard flooring, Designastyle, Wisker Decorating and East Coast Steel went a long way to ensuring the fabulous result.” The challenges came with coordinating everything that was going on inside and outside simultaneously, at any given moment on the site, plus ideas and plans were changing and evolving as they went along. “It’s fabulous the project received this recognition,” Tim says. “Over the 2.5-year build, we were so closely involved that we became a little immune to its magnificence. The house was amazing before, but now it is improved by 110 percent.”

A DRAMATIC TRANSFOR

Located off the well-trodden path of most new hospitality ventures in Christchurch today, this recent winner of the ADNZ – Canterbury/Westland: Commercial Interior Design Award, The Birdwood is comfortably nestled into the heart of suburban Beckenham.

his re-purposed old building has two establishments consisting an eatery and a pizzeria. Both venues hinged around a central kitchen designed to service both facilities during their alternate times of trade – a requirement of their

resource consent and project brief. The ambience of the eatery is based around a light-drenched open space scattered with tables, providing a clean fresh, vibrant feel, while the pizzeria presents a darker more intimate space.

Acoustic consideration in both venues delivers spaces which can cater for large groups while still maintaining a comfortable volume. The most obvious design feature in both venues are the ash timber chairs and

RMATION stools. Supple ochre leather was chosen for the cushions to give a punch of colour in the lighter eatery but still provide a warm natural tone in the darker pizzeria. Roma Imperiale Granite stone benchtops and local lime stone around the woodfired pizza oven add a lovely combination with the varied black and brown finishes throughout. A prominent feature of the eatery is the bespoke Woodtex ceiling. These fine fibre strand acoustic panels are arranged

at 45 degrees then set at varied widths to provide an acoustic absorption surface area greater than that below. This provides a visually dramatic acoustic solution to an unresolved problem in most busy cafĂŠs. Louie and the team from Mckenzie Builders worked closely with Nic Curragh from Objects Ltd on the fit out and Dean Cowell from Three Sixty Architecture on the extensive remodelling of the original building. Louie says the challenge in the job was dealing with the old building and all its flaws, trying to drag it into the 21st century by adding steel beams, opening up large spaces and trying to level out seven different floor heights while installing a three-tonne pizza oven imported from Italy,

all under very tight timeframes. McKenzie Builders loved the challenge and is extremely proud of the finished product. The company has just walked away with a gold medal in the Master Builders House of the Year competition, which Louie says was a great result and recognition for all of his team. Louie says most of his work comes through word of mouth which is a great testament to his business.

Sustainability in mind

Gold Award winners in the House Under $450,000 category of the New Zealand Master Builders House of the Year Regional Competition, NKR Builders believes ‘South New Brighton Project’ is a great representation of the company’s building philosophy: ‘To provide the highest quality workmanship to clients and bring their dreams to reality’.

NKR

Builders Director Nathan Roberts says the home stands out as a statement of design and meticulous planning. Exterior cladding combines vertical cedar weatherboards with Shadowclad (textured ply, oiled) and chunky cover battens. The

interiors feature plywood ceilings with exposed rafters in the living areas, and timber floors. High ceilings leverage airiness and space on the 115sqm footprint. The look and feel of comfort is enhanced by the modern ultra-low emission burner.

However, this home is about so much more than its fabulous style. It is designed with sustainability in mind – to reduce the overall environmental impact during and after construction. Locally sourced materials with a carbon zero footprint, along with increased R rated insulation provide a foundation of energy efficiency. Insulated exterior doors, thermally broken aluminum extrusion windows with double glazing and tinted glass are joined by thermosiphon design incorporating high level automated windows, allowing heat exchange throughout the house via natural convection which further increases energy efficiency. Solar energy heats the water and provision for future expansion is built in. The house’s carbon footprint has been carefully considered, down to using LED lighting throughout the property. A full grey water and storm water system is incorporated, releasing the homeowners from any dependency on climate or rainfall. Nathan says the challenge came with the new flood level provisions; the floor is 1.2m above the ground, yet the house had to be proportionally in harmony with those around it. For Nathan and his team, it’s a very satisfying build with a great result. “The materials really complement each other, especially the cedar soffits against the dark oiled shadow clad, and it is so great that the client wanted to build something out of the ordinary, as they are the jobs that stand out.”
