Unforgettable wedding gowns

“How do I start the process to look for a wedding gown?” is one of the most asked questions by brides.

Luckily

Brides of Merivale are experts in their field with over 25 years in the Canterbury wedding scene.

The first step is to arrange a consultation. Brides of Merivale o er a one-hour initial appointment for a small $30 fee. You have the entire showroom to yourself during the allocated time, with one of their expert consultants to advise and suggest styles to suit your figure and vision.

“We are very proud to o er a full in-store service to our brides. It makes the process more special.”

purchase o -the-rack. Some are ex-sample styles that have been discounted, “they are perfect for quick turnaround weddings or elopements,” says Lisa. Brides of Merivale stock leading labels such as Made With Love, Kellylin Couture, Wendy Makin & French Collection, Miss Chloe, and arriving soon, Miss Scarlet.

“We recommend a bride starts the search at least 9-10 months prior to their wedding,” says owner Lisa Dermott. “Companies can take up to six months to deliver product. Starting early can eliminate last minute stress.”

If your wedding is within short time frames, there is a selection of gowns to

TRENDING NOW

So, what are the trends right now?

“Beading, sequins and texture is popular, and we are also seeing a lot of simple plain gowns. Style-wise, strapless and o -the-shoulder is making an impact. Layering with changeable pieces is a definite trend,” Lisa says.

Overall brides wear what suits their body, personality, and colouring. It’s a complex process to work through.

“As a store we are quite unique. All of our close-knit team are trained couturiers who can individually create a bespoke gown or alter our ready-made gowns to perfection. Bespoke made-to-measure gowns allow brides to create their perfect gown without compromise,” adds Lisa. “We are very proud to o er a full in-store service to our brides. It makes the process more special.”

That’s why seeking advice from experts can help.

“For our latest collaboration shoot we showcased a modern vibe within local Christchurch venues. With the weather thwarting our initial plan to be outside, our favourite professionals pulled together to create stunning images. The result shows no matter what the day, if you have the right professionals behind you nothing can ruin your day.”

Top trends

Bridesmaid trends for 2023 see a continuum of matching colours and fabrics but with di ering styles, which allows bridesmaids to look the part yet feel entirely comfortable in a style that suits them.

Wedding dress trends this season see a focus on bows, splits in dresses, and an

architectural-type shaping that is sophisticated and elegant.

Around 90 percent of brides still wear veils, which is like the icing on the cake for a bridal look, but they are often single veils that sit at the nape, rather than the crown of the head.

Beautiful bridal dreams

The most special and significant dress a woman will ever wear, the wedding gown is also the most photographed, and the most valuable. From ball gowns to fitted fishtails, from soft flowing satins to layers of sparkle tulle, from modern, minimalist, celebrity chic, to the opulence of Mikado fabric, or detachable wings or sleeves. With all of this, and of course so much gorgeous lace, bridal fashion has never looked so good.

In Christchurch, To Cherish Bridal is at the centre of it all. Boutique owner Alison ensures that the selection of gowns in store represent all of this and so much more, saying “every bride is unique - we have something special for every taste and style.”

When searching for the perfect dress (that many have dreamed of since childhood), the advice and support of your bridal consultant is vital.

Alison and the team at ‘To Cherish’ have many years experience, and they have delighted thousands of brides, so they are uniquely placed to guide you towards your perfect bridal look. Not just the gown, but accessories and magical touches you didn’t even imagine as a small girl ‘playing bride’ with a pillow case veil in front of the big mirror in Mum’s room.

With all the challenges of Covid-19 in the last few years, Alison says that delivery times can sometimes be up to seven months, and up to two months for alterations if required - so plan to allow plenty of time.

There is also the option to choose many gowns ‘ready to wear’ from stock if you’re worried about timeframes.

Alison also encourages brides to be aware of things

like sizing variations between overseas brands and New Zealand clothing standards (often up to 2 sizes).

Alison also o ers this advice: “Book early, bring nude underwear and a strapless bra if possible, ready to enjoy your bridal shopping experience. It can be an emotionally and physically tiring process, but totally worth it when you find the perfect gown.

“You should do your best to communicate and tell us everything you’re looking for and dreaming of. The more we know the better service and advice we can provide. Most of all you should have fun trying and choosing your gown.”

Rain or shine, in a church or in a garden, there is one thing at the focal centre of almost every wedding - the dress!

Wedding styles

Withmany stunning wedding styles to choose from, it can be overwhelming to decide on the right one. Each style can have its own unique ambiance, from the classic elegance of a formal wedding to the rustic charm of a barn wedding. Make sure to consider the season you will be getting married and the colours you are certain you want to include. Keeping that in mind, here are some popular wedding styles to help you decide what is right for you.

Firstly, the classic wedding style is the crème de la crème of sophistication. This style typically features a formal ceremony with black-tie attire, a grand ballroom reception, and a sit-down dinner with fine china and crystal glassware. The classic

wedding style is perfect for couples who appreciate simple and elegant beauty.

On the other hand, for couples who prefer a more relaxed, free-spirited, and natural ambiance, they’ll want to go for the boho aesthetic. The boho style usually features an outdoor ceremony, rustic decor, and a casual reception with a bu etstyle dinner.

Channel the 70s when thinking boho, think flared wedding sleeves, curled and braided hair, flower crowns, and dried florals. Next up, the beach wedding style is perfect for couples who lap up the sun, sand, and surf. Imagine a beach ceremony, a breezy reception with tropical cocktails and a seafood menu, backdropped by a romantic sunset view.

Another popular wedding style is the vintage wedding. Consider looking back at your favorite time period, the sparkle and dazzle of the roaring 20s, or Hollywood glamour of the 50s. Ideal for couples who are nostalgic for an era they have an a nity with. This style is hightened by antique decor, classic cars, and retro outfits.

Lastly, the rustic wedding style is perfect for couples who prefer an intimate atmosphere with a touch of countryside charm. This style features a barn or farm setting, burlap and lace decor, and a casual reception with a BBQ or a family-style dinner.

The rustic wedding style is fitting for outdoor loving couples who want to celebrate their love in an inviting atmosphere.

A slice of love

Modernwedding cakes come in all shapes and sizes, single and multiple tiered, plain and fancy.

A wedding cake was originally a luxury item, and a sign of celebration and social status (the bigger the cake, the higher the social standing). Early wedding cakes in England and early America were traditionally fruit cakes, topped with marzipan and icing.

During ancient Greek and Roman nuptials, the groom broke bread over the bride’s head, to symbolise her submission, the end of her purity, and to represent good luck and fertility.

Get that wedding-day glow

Fromyour hair to dress and gorgeous sun-kissed skin, there’s a lot to coordinate.

If you’re heading down the aisle and thinking about getting a tan, there’s a few things to keep in mind – most importantly is to go to a professional 2-3 days before the big day. They can take the stress (and streaks!) out of tanning and leave you looking fabulous.

Tan in the City is Christchurch’s newest boutique tanning salon and beauty bar. They’ve been tanning specialists for over ten years up in Auckland and go above and beyond, using the science behind tanning to pick the best shade for you. They use high-quality smallbatch products to leave you walking away looking flawless.

For brides, they recommend their Deluxe Tan – first applying a prep spray to ensure a long-lasting tan. They will finish o your service with a tan-drying powder that removes tackiness and, most importantly, stop transfer to keep your gown perfect. All their tanning products are alcohol, fragrance and paraben free, vegan, and hypoallergenic.

Additionally, Tan in the City can take care of your eyelashes, eyebrows and waxing before your special day. Bookings are encouraged for bridal services – reach out to the team to discuss your needs.

There’s no denying the pressures that go with getting married, especially when it comes to looking your best.

Love has four letters, and so does cake, and no wedding is complete without a generous helping of both.

For nuptials to treasure

While most people understand that you can’t have a wedding without a wedding celebrant, that celebrant’s role is far wider than simply being the facilitator of the legal requirements for getting married.

Gorgeous setting

Happy is the bride the sun shines on, or so the adage goes.

boutique weddings have been popular post-Covid-19.

Jenni

Gibson, a celebrant for some 14 years knows that celebrants need to be peopleoriented, compassionate and tolerant, as well as accepting and accommodating of di erences.

“My aim is always to make each couple’s ceremony unique, to reflect what makes them who they are and what makes them di erent. I help couples through all of the marriage process, o er ideas for their ceremony and always listen to help them create something to reflect their wishes and make their wedding day memorable. Flexibility is the key along with a good helping of creativity.”

Jenni has loved every minute of the 130 wedding ceremonies she has performed.

From an initial meeting with a couple to discuss their ideas for a ceremony, advising on the legalities, helping write wedding vows, suggesting music and readings, right through to ensuring everything and everyone is in place for the big day, Jenni is able to co-ordinate your ceremony from start to finish. “I am happy to perform my ceremonies anywhere in New Zealand, at any time of the day and at any location from on a boat in a harbour to on top of a mountain.” As well as being a celebrant, Jenni is also a Wedding Planner/Coordinator for small intimate bespoke weddings. Jenni o ers a truly comprehensive, personalised service. Call her at 021723089.

These days there’s no need to worry about the weather, keeping in the shade, or out of the rain, if your wedding aisle is down a purpose-built event pavilion.

Add a vineyard setting for ambience, a modern restaurant, and multiple indoor/outdoor options for guests, and it sets the scene for an idyllic country wedding.

Melton Estate is a boutique winery and event venue, set amongst vines on 4.8 hectares in West Melton, Christchurch, only 15 minutes from the airport.

Weddings are a speciality, with boutique packages for two to 30 guests, and facilities to cater for up to 150 people seated.

Co-owner Tracy Caunter says

“If you want a small wedding, from two to 30 people, we provide the celebrant, flowers for the bridal party, and a single tier wedding cake as part of the all-inclusive package.

“Everything is taken care of. It’s a very personalised service,” she adds.

Of course, larger weddings are also catered for with wedding specialists to help with planning and ensure everything runs smoothly.

The winery restaurant and cellar door is open all year on Thursday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm, and otherwise by arrangement for weddings, conferences, corporate events and family celebrations.

Workin’ your wedding

Nothing ramps up the fun and excitement levels at a wedding reception like a live act, but if the performers cannot build a connection with their audience, it can make for a somewhat flat atmosphere.

tailor-made to suit whatever theme the couple have in mind for their wedding reception,” Gavin says.

So flexible are the pair that they can even provide background music at the wedding ceremony before moving themselves and their sound system on to the wedding reception venue.

“Kopy Kats has a versatile approach – be that singing a requested favourite song for the couple’s first dance to strutting the stage as Elvis or Elton. The goal is for maximum audience involvement and an unforgettable wedding.”

Creating cake art

Wedding cakes have their roots in Ancient Rome. Marriage ceremonies ended with a scone-like wheat or barley cake broken over the bride’s head for luck and fertility. Today things are rather different and the options in wedding cake design and flavour are endless.

Mother and daughter Sally Holt and Kate Podmore of Twisted Flour know that a wedding cake is more than just a centrepiece at the wedding reception. It’s a work of art by its creator. That’s what gives them the greatest pleasure.

“The size, design, colour and flavour of a cake is up to our couples”, say Sally and Kate. “We will do whatever they want, after all it is for their special day.

More and more we are finding that couples are daring to be di erent, playing around with colour, texture and shape. If they

have a crazy idea for a unique dream wedding cake we will put our creative genius to work, making that idea a reality. ”Sally and Kate love to live up to their name. They say they are a bit “twisted” and “one of a kind” as are their cakes. “We make bold cakes that wow”, they say. Yet behind the quirkiness and wit of many of their creations there is real skill and experience. Sally has been creating wedding

cakes for over 40 years. She has a floristry background as well and takes real pleasure in creating florals for cakes whether that be with fondant, real flowers or artificial flowers. Kate has followed her mother’s passion and has a special talent in making fondant figurines for cakes to make them truly personalised for the clients.

Each cake these girls make is a precious creation, not to be

let out of their sight until they deliver it to a venue, position it on its table and make any necessary finishing touches.

“When you have a cake that might weigh 70 kilos or be several tiers high, you really want to make sure that it reaches its destination in one piece.”

Cutting the cake is the highlight of the wedding reception - something no guest wants to miss. They certainly will not want to miss the cutting and the eating of a Twisted Flour cake. As Sally and Kate say “You might lose your mind a little when you taste our cakes.”

Grooming for Her and Him

Her

Hair - Depending on your gown, you may opt for an updo, or a relaxed hair down style. Do some online research for hairstyle inspiration, and take those ideas to your hair trial. If you want to include any hair accessories, buy them before the trial, so you can see how the entire look comes together.

Makeup - Decide on the level of makeup you’ll feel most confident in, whether it’s a glammed-up look, or something more subtle. Book a makeup test run to ensure you’re happy with your look for the big day.

Him

Hair - To ensure great looking hair on your wedding day, schedule an appointment with your barber at least three weeks in advance. Waiting until the last minute may result in disappointment, leaving you with no choice but to trust a new barber with your hair just before your big day. To avoid any hair emergencies, book early and confirm it beforehand.

Facials - Facials aren’t just for women. Booking in facials leading up to the wedding will help you achieve glowing, clear skin that will look great in photos.

When it comes to wedding planning, it’s easy to forget about the things that will make you feel confident on your big day. Here are some tips to make your wedding day less stressful.

Bridal accessories for her and him

On a couple’s wedding day, they want to look their best. Bridal accessories for him and her can elevate their outfits and add their personal aesthetics to a day they’ll remember forever.

For the bride

The wedding gown is the centrepiece, but bridal accessories can pull together the overall look. A floral crown or headband with colourful flowers and foliage can add a bohemian touch to the bridal look. When it comes to a veil, there are many styles to choose from, including colourful floral embroidered veils on trend now. Bridal jewellery, such as a necklace or earrings, can add sparkle and glamour to the outfit. Some brides carry a small clutch so that, if need be, they have their essential items for the reception.

Shoes are also an important accessory for the bride. While comfort is key, many brides choose to wear nude or silver heels for the elegance they provide. The shoes should complement the dress and be comfortable enough to wear all day.

For the groom

Accessories are less varied for the groom, but no less important. The groom’s outfit is typically a suit or tuxedo. A tie or bowtie can be chosen to match the colours of the wedding theme, or to complement the bride’s outfit. A pair of suspenders can be a stylish and practical accessory for the groom, especially if he’s planning on dancing the night away. A pocket square can also be added for a pop of colour. Cu inks can be chosen to match the wedding band, and a watch can add a touch of luxury to the outfit.

When it comes to bridal accessories for both the bride and groom, there are also some gender-neutral options. For example, a boutonniere is a traditional accessory for the groom, yet it can also be worn by the bride as a statement piece. Also, sunglasses, whether for the outdoor ceremony or for a cool photo shoot, matching sunglasses can be a very stylish addition to the bridal look.

Experience is everything

One of the most reassuring words in the English language, or in any language for that matter, is the word “experience”- it represents something that has stood the test of time.

For intimate weddings

When it comes to planning an intimate wedding, a hotel can be the perfect setting for a memorable and romantic celebration.

Whena couple decide to marry, alongside the date and venue, the most important thing to secure is their celebrant. An experienced celebrant does not just perform the marriage ceremony - they elevate it.

Graham Jones has been a celebrant for 23 years, and has performed around 800 wedding ceremonies during that time. “I have been married for 43 years. I believe in marriage, and I believe in love,” Graham says.

Graham believes the wedding ceremony sets the tone for the whole day. “If you put e ort into that, everything

else falls into place.”

Graham likes his initial consultation with the couple to be in their own home.

“A relaxed environment helps us to get to know each other and see if we are a good fit, which is so important.”

Graham’s popularity as a celebrant has seen him perform intergenerational ceremonies within families.

“Trust is everything. People know me and my work.

They know their marriage ceremony is in the surest of hands.”
