Winter Wrap Up The

By Rhonda Mitchell

Four distinct and beautiful seasons (sometimes all in one day) are as synonymous with Christchurch as a view of the rugged snow-capped mountains across the plains. You don’t need a trip down memory lane to geography class to know us Cantabrians experience both a high annual and diurnal temperature range.

A

clear crisp winter’s morning can see Ōtautahi shiver in the minus degrees, only to be basking in brilliant sunshine, cobalt blue skies and temperatures in the balmy late teens for a couple of hours in the afternoon. Other mornings dawn calm and mild, only to develop into a ripping easterly, a delight for the estuary’s superhuman kite and windsurfers, but threatening to flay the skin from the bones of mere mortal citizens.

The team at premier men’s fashion atelier Working Style, understand that this spicy variety in Canterbury life can mean one thing: layers! Working Style’s Creative Director Karl Clausen is now Auckland-based, but remembers with great fondness his Christchurch years. “There are some very brisk days when you wake up and it’ll be zero degrees outside and a bit of frost, but blue skies. You know that you want to wrap up, but

you won’t be worried like in Wellington where the rain comes in sideways.” Karl’s local knowledge ensures that Working Style embraces our delicious variation and caters to local men’s layering needs this winter. “Adding layers brings an element of comfort and joy – putting on your favourite coat and scarf; it’s something that I haven’t been able to do living in Auckland,” Karl says. “There is no doubt that layering up now can be more

colourful, diverse and put together. Rather than a heavy overcoat it can be a puffer or down coat, colourful and welldesigned giving the wearer the opportunity to be more expressive. “Other guys will be more comfortable making a more considered purchase of an outerwear piece that will last them a long time. In recent times we’ve tried to make those items a little more interesting without detracting from their longevity.” This season at Working Style includes a beautiful heavy basket weave overcoat in navy. While contemporary, it is not so fashion-forward that it will be out of style next year. It will also transition through your wardrobe if you wear it over tailoring, or wear it over something a bit more casual. The scarf range includes the interesting and playful as well as classic colours, and there are stunning heavy-soled boots this season. It is a gum-soled desert boot, giving comfort and durability against the elements. “We are in tune with what winters mean across New Zealand and where our stores and clients are based. We develop our collections to cater to clients’ lifestyles and what the season throws at them too.” Visit Working Style Christchurch at 242 Papanui Road. Metropol May 23, 2019 3

A soughtafter location

News about the fabulous lifestyle available at The Russley Village has travelled fast and, as a result, there are only four brand new apartments left in the gorgeous Sefton Apartment complex.

THE RUSSLEY VILLAGE

Final Apartments Available From $495,000

L

ocated next to the Homestead which hosts the excellent facilities of the Village, these sought-after apartments are in the heart of the village, and the Sefton Apartment block itself is home to the glorious 15m x 9m heated indoor swimming pool and spa pool. Apartment prices start at just $495,000 and anyone who is interested in moving to The Russley Village should contact the

village team without delay. “These apartments have been snapped up,” says Village Manager Wayne Thompson. “We would hate for anyone who is really keen to miss out”. In The Russley Village’s warm and inclusive community there’s always something happening. There is a first-class array of facilities at the Village, including the heated pool, gym, cinema, billiard area, plus the newly resurfaced bowling green, which is multipurpose and is also used for croquet and mini golf. The fully licensed Abode café is open to both residents and their guests and is proving extremely popular for brunches, lunches and dinners, meetings and celebrations. The Russley Village continues to set high standards for retirement villages in physical design, architectural individuality, social variety and soon with the completion of our boutique care facility, Ashley Suites,” says Wayne. “But it really must be seen to be appreciated.” Book a visit, see the standard and size of their apartments, the amenities and the award-winning gardens, and finish with a coffee in Abode café.

I

t seems that I’m at that age now where, as cool as I think my new clothes are, my daughter doesn’t. In fact, she may even have referred to one of my favourite stores as ‘dowdy’. Ouch, the cutting words of a teenager! But actually I’m OK with it. Georgia and I have very distinct tastes – distinctly different that is. But fact is, it’s never been my role to micromanage what she wears, nor to tell her what sports she should play or what friends she should hang out with. I’ve always viewed my role as helping her become the young lady she should be, in a safe and supported environment. The world is full of different people – that’s the beauty of it and slowly, but surely, our young people are starting to recognise this. As social media comes under increasing scrutiny for contributing to poor mental health and body image, there are a growing number of young women who are using online platforms to empower and educate. Locally, Kiwi influencers too are embracing the trend towards body positivity and empowerment. Whether it’s Auckland DJ and filmmaker Shaki Wasasala, aka Half Queen, showing off her body hair, writer and fat activist Ally Garrett proudly posing in a plus-size bikini, Sophia Malthus sharing the realities of life Metropol Circulation in a wheelchair, or wrestler and trans activist Leilani Tomoniko working to normalise transgenderism, it’s time for us all to get on the #bodypositivity bandwagon. GUNN’S By Melinda Collins

BLAZING

When there are cameras rolling, it’s a common theme for there to be a starring role and a supporting role and, while this is undoubtedly true of the Gunn family, there’s somewhat of an anomaly in the success story of local production company Whitebait Media.

B

ecause although iconic television – and now radio – personality Jason Gunn is the gregarious natural born performer and the star of the show, to describe wife Janine

Morrell-Gunn, the woman who has been by his side for the past 24 years, as being in a supporting role simply wouldn’t capture the role of the beautiful go-getter making things happen

behind the scenes. Your typical A type personality, she is ambitious, driven, organised and proactive, but importantly, she is the driving force behind

a production company that celebrates 21 years in business this year, heading New Zealand’s longest-running children’s programme, What Now? and dominating children’s TV with

shows like The Erin Simpson Show and The Adam And Eve Show. Janine has been a leader and a trailblazer since her student days at the University of Canterbury

She recalls early in her career making the flight to Auckland to be at a meeting, not wanting to let being based in Christchurch an issue, a meeting which was postponed not once, not twice but three days in a row, with Janine flying into the city for each! “Twenty years ago it was harder to be here when most business wasn’t. Now we fly people down here and share our Canterbury experience and hospitality. Aucklanders enjoy the vibe, so that’s really positive. “We’ve been able to raise our family and the greater Whitebait whanau, run our business and have a lifestyle that wouldn’t have been the same in Auckland.” In 2003, TVNZ shut down its Wellington-based Children’s Unit and the next year Whitebait Productions won the tender to relaunch What Now? and bring production of the show back to Christchurch. The show continues to play an integral part in the Whitebait story, but today represents just a small part of what the production company does. With the largest and most wellequipped studio facilities in the South Island, the team is still making live and pre-recorded children’s, youth and family television, with Fanimals – “our new baby” – one of the biggest hits. Now in its second season, Whitebait has partnered with the Department of Conservation, Auckland Zoo and the RSPCA to deliver the series where kids and animals are the stars of the show. She can’t help but flick through the photos of a little blue penguin that was on set recently. “New Zealand is second now only to the US in terms of

pet ownership,” Janine says. “There are endless numbers of stories in that space, reflecting the diverse nature of our love for animals.” The company has now also moved into the world of animation, partnering with a company in India to produce Darwin and Newts, which has been green-lit for a second season, with production beginning and ending right here in Christchurch. Highlights include being picked up by CCTV in China and translated into our own Te Reo Maori. “Our kaupapa is to give Kiwi children a voice; we’re not just advocating for our young people, but we’re also celebrating them as well by enabling Kiwi kids to see themselves on television. We get wonderful offshore content here, but it’s still important for our kids to see themselves on screen – we’re a small sliver of New Zealand.” The Sunday staple of New Zealand television What Now? has recently left the studio and gone nationwide – on the back of a $400,000 investment. “We’ve built an ob truck and taken it on the road – 40 towns in 40 weeks,” Janine explains. “It’s like a travelling circus; we get 250-450 beautiful kids turning up to be on the show every week!” What Now? can cater to what’s happening in the country at the time. After the mosque attacks, they did a ‘share the love’ themed show. “It reflects the changing nature of diversity. Our population base has changed. With a show like What Now? we’re able to show real life New Zealand culture and demonstrate inclusiveness.”

where she headed the Students’ Association, and remains as passionate as the young gun was in 1981 when she was arrested for obstructing a carriageway in a political move during the 1981 Springbok tour. Those visions of changing the world persisted when she launched into an internship at TVNZ, covering current affairs and, although she didn’t become the next Judy Bailey, it did lead her to children’s television, after she directed children’s current affairs shows Spot On and Viewfinder. Janine eventually worked her way through the ranks, becoming Executive Producer of TVNZ’s Children’s Unit. It was in this role that she met her future husband, Jason Gunn. The gregarious presenter was Janine’s employee and together they worked on kids’ show, After 2. It was Janine’s idea to create The Son of a Gunn Show, featuring Gunn’s beloved sidekick Thingee and the rest, as they say, is history. It’s been said that when one door closes, another one opens and when TVNZ’s Children’s Unit was relocated from Christchurch to Wellington in 1998, the couple decided to “put a stake in the ground” and set up their own company, then known as Whitebait Productions. Whitebait’s first commission was Bumble, a preschool series about a bee and his friends and, of course, it was Jason that would be the first actor to don the Bumble suit. “Jase and I needed to sail our own waka. We’d been so well supported at TVNZ, which we appreciated, but we wanted to be here with our families. All TV roads led to Auckland, but we’re unashamedly passionate about Canterbury.”

whether that is the Whitebait community, the business community, our cultural communities and the local

charitable community, in which she is heavily involved. There are around 40 young people working at the production facilities in Princess Street, Middleton, with another 70-odd contractors involved in the shows. “We always strive to create an environment our team wants to be in,” Janine says. “My husband is a spontaneous, ‘smell the roses’ kinda guy. As a producer, being with him, I have learnt to ‘get’ performers and from behind the scenes understand how to support those out the front. He brings humour to our lives; it’s infectious and our people learn how to have a laugh and keep it light.” The global industry is peppered with former Whitebaiters who have thrived under her tutelage. The team has regular bakeoffs, birthday celebrations and theatre screenings, and just hosted the first shared lunch within their business park to bring the work community together – they plant trees and give an annual scholarship in honour of a team member who died in the quakes and this year everyone helped make a wreath and did an ode to remembrance for ANZAC Day. A new passion project is making Whitebait paper cup free; everyone has been given their own Keep Cups to take to the café next door and milk is

now delivered in glass bottles. They’re even learning Te Reo Maori. Whitebait is a proud supporter of Cholmondeley Children’s Centre. Janine is the chair of the board and Jason was recently the MC for the annual fundraiser, Little Gems: A Night of Denim, Diamonds & Dancing. “It’s a beautiful Canterbury charity. We’re both deeply passionate about respite care for our local children. It’s been going for 93 years due to the huge generosity of Canterbury.” Children are also at the centre of a small young charity, Uru Mānuka where Janine sits on the board alongside Garry Moore to ensure all Canterbury kids get the digital tools they need for equitable and open access to their education. And then there’s the Māia Health Foundation which Janine is a part of and has the support of the Gunns. “I love the ethos. It’s about enhancing the health experience in Canterbury by taking our health services from good to great.” The project-based charity is very close to achieving its $5.2m target to get a large rooftop helipad on top of Christchurch Hospital’s new building and fold-down parent beds into the children’s ward. And you just know Janine is going to put her heart and soul into helping in any way she can.

Business greats hit Christchurch

Former Christchurch High head boy Jake Millar is a 23-year-old with a $9 million video company and the world at his feet, so why is he bringing some of the world’s most successful business leaders back home? To teach New Zealand businesses about failure.

M

illar’s commercial baby is Unfiltered which, at face value, is focused on content creation. But amongst the vast and impressive range of video interviews on its website which include Sir Richard Branson and former Prime Minister John Key, there’s an overriding theme – education. The website is designed to be a ‘hub’ of information sourced directly from the best

business minds in one easy to navigate spot at www.unfiltered.tv. Since launching in Auckland back in 2015, Millar and business partner Yuuki Ogino have uploaded more than 200 videos, attracted almost 30 million views and worked with companies like Bell Gully, AMP, PwC and Spark to create and distribute branded content. It’s seen Millar and Ogino ranked in Forbes’

North American ‘30 Under 30’ list in the education category. Together the pair have hundreds of interviews under their business belts, with as many again in the pipeline – unsurprisingly it can take years of legwork to get some of America’s biggest household names on camera. Now they’re bringing some of the business heavyweights to Christchurch, from the former worldwide CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi, to the founder and CEO of Masterclass, and NASA’s former administrator. Unfiltered Live is hitting Christchurch on 25 June, with the top business leaders and entrepreneurs from around the world here to share the biggest, most transformative mistakes they’ve made and how they turned devastating failure into global success. “We’re really excited to bring the event to Christchurch. We’re now in our fourth year and we have a feedback rating of 97 percent of people who attend that want to see the next event,” Millar says. “It’s time to have an open and transparent conversation, a behind the curtains look at the mistakes that everyone makes. We’ve got a fantastic line up that is a mix of international and national speakers.” Find more at www.unfiltered.tv.

Life Beyond BOAS A recent visitor to Ourvets St Albans was Dice, a three-year-old French Bulldog suffering from Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS); a respiratory disorder commonly found in animals with shortened heads (brachycephalic breeds), such as the Pug, French Bulldog, English Bulldog, Pekingese, Shih Tzu, Japanese Chin, Boxer and Boston Terrier.

A

lthough not all brachycephalic dogs suffer clinical signs of the syndrome, the incidence and severity of the breathing disorder has increased.

Affected dogs must increase their inspiratory effort to overcome upper airway obstruction to achieve sufficient ventilation. This increased effort creates

The six clinical signs of BOAS: • Respiratory noise: snoring and snorting are indicators of airway obstruction. • Stenosis (excessive narrowing) of nostrils: these often collapse inward during inspiration, making breathing through the nose difficult. • Gastrointestinal signs and eating difficulties. • Obstructive sleep apnea/sleepdisordered breathing: snoring, and frequent abrupt awakenings where the dog seems to be choking or gasping for air. • Heat intolerance: exercise but don’t over-exercise your BOAS-affected dog, especially not on hot summer days. • Collapse: breathing difficulties cause an inability to meet oxygen requirements. If oxygen levels aren’t stabilised immediately, the dog may collapse. Dice showed many of these clinical signs and required his nostrils widened (alarplasty), his soft palate trimmed (staphylectomy) and laryngeal saccules removed from his larynx (sacculectomy) to improve his airways. Two weeks after his surgery a very happy Dice is back home with his family, who report there’s no more snoring, his exercise levels have improved and best of all, he’s breathing so much easier. high pressure that sucks the soft tissues into the airway passage resulting in swelling of this tissue and further narrowing of the airways. If left untreated, life threatening issues with major organs, including lungs and heart, may develop. Respiration plays a crucial role in regulating body temperature. BOAS also affects this process, which is why many brachycephalic dogs overheat with minimal exercise, or on warm days. Another contributing factor to airway obstruction is obesity. Dogs with BOAS are often limited in their ability to exercise so are more at risk of becoming overweight. Excessive weight results in fat tissue surrounding and further narrowing the airway.

Burlington Village will eventually have around 200 luxurious houses,

Marketing Manager Jemma Appleton says the suites in the new Care Centre are generously proportioned with the smallest suite being twice the size than the norm; the biggest suite is 40 square metres. The completed Burlington Village will have beautifully landscaped grounds and three hectares of manmade lakes, making it, undoubtedly, one of the most picturesque retirement villages in Christchurch. So committed to this concept are Mel Hubber (nee Lowen) and Kim Beswick, co-owners and consultants of House of Travel Ferrymead, that they have redesigned the store around their clients’ comfort and relaxation.

“W

e have come up with a layout that is interactive, relaxed and private,” Mel says. “We found traditional set-ups could be intimidating – rows of desks and wondering which one to pitch up to, particularly if you are in the early stages of realising your dream and just have questions or would like to

pick up a brochure,” Kim says. A relaxed ambience fills the store: a living wall, natural oil diffuser and coffee made from compostable pods help clients to leave the world behind and start thinking holidays. Conversations about travel dreams happen at café-style tables over coffee. “We have moved on from transactional

conversations over the top of a PC. We distil the details to create the exact trip that their heart desires. We find clients open up more in this environment,” Mel says. “We nurture the relationship with the client, discuss what inspires them and where their travel dreams lie,” Kim adds. The seven consultants

are experienced travellers, committed to the life-enhancing role of travel. Their central tenet of duty of care is prized by clients. “We take great pride that we will personally answer the emergency phone number and do whatever it takes on a 24/7 basis.” All this, plus ample free parking at the door.

The latest Asian food trends tend to contain lots of vegetables and healthier sauces – it’s not just about being exotic and tasty but also about being lighter and healthier and that is what you’ll find in abundance at Commi, with choices to please every palate. Hoi An House in Halswell Road is destination dining for all the very best in Vietnamese and Thai cuisine, in a fine and historic venue. Full service fine dining is complemented by the garden terrace and the function room that can be arranged in intimate spaces or for up to 80 guests. A lunch menu is available from Wednesday to Sunday for both dine in and takeaway. The chefs at both Commi and Hoi An House have travelled to Christchurch from Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Malaysia to bring you the flavours of their home towns, prepared under fully compliant and sustainable business practices. The quality of the ingredients used is the central tenet of both restaurants, with the crème of local vegetables combined with the very best of imported items such as bamboo shoots, baby corn, and water chestnut, to keep dishes authentic. The soy and oyster sauces used are gluten free, and most dishes can be made vegetarian with notice to the chef. The Asian Garden Cooking School at Harewood completes the hat trick of excellence in Asian cuisine. Here you, friends, or colleagues can learn the techniques required to reproduce the authentic and delicious tastes from the restaurants in your kitchens at home. On average, Kiwis unlock their mobile phone 80 times per day. That’s right, eightzero. If you’re looking at that statistic with disbelief, you’re not alone. I did the same before thinking back through a typical day and realising that I’d easily hit that national average, if not more.

be the best way forwards. Enter the BoringPhone. About to be launched on Kickstarter, BoringPhone looks and feels like your average smartphone, but has a significant difference – this minimalist phone goes back to basics with all of the useful features and none of the distractions. Running a customised Android operating system, BoringPhone makes calls and sends text messages, takes pictures, plays music and has maps, just like the phone you probably have sitting in front of you right now. What makes BoringPhone different is what it doesn’t do. It has no internet browser, no social media, no email and you can’t download and install any apps on it. There are fairly recent alternatives out there, such as Nokia’s re-release of the classic 3310, but that in itself comes with the stigma of actually looking like an oldschool phone. Owning it is a statement, inviting comment and almost seeking attention. It’s the tech version of announcing you’re vegan, have quit sugar, or you’ve never seen an episode of Game of Thrones. But BoringPhone looks like every other smartphone and its makers are marketing it not only towards socially conscious users, but towards businesses that want a fleet of phones that won’t be susceptible to dangerous third party apps. The Kickstarter campaign begins in June 2019 and every initial BoringPhone will be handmade, with personalised support. Sign up for news and follow the project at www.boringphone.com.

Having recently signed up to the New Zealand Law Society Gender Equality Charter, Harmans joins a number of other law firms nationwide who are committed to improving the retention and advancement of female lawyers in the legal profession. When signing up to the Charter, Harmans not only took a hard look at its own ideals as a firm, but also at the impact its commitment could have on the legal profession as a whole. As one proverb says, ‘If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together’. By working together as a community, Harmans believes the law profession will foster greater diversity and inspire more female lawyers to reach their personal and professional goals. Harmans adopts the same approach internally. As an employer, we encourage teamwork, balance and diversity amongst our key values. Our senior legal staff includes two female partners and eight female associates, all of whom are experts in their respective and varied areas of practice. Each of these women brings a different and valuable perspective to Harmans and its leadership. They also represent some of the leading voices within the firm on important issues affecting the future of the profession including technology and innovation, and many are involved in supporting community projects or groups. Harmans is proud to continue the journey of promoting women in law, and is well equipped to handle your legal needs should the need arise.

HOSPO HELP FOR ALCOHOL LICENSING

A successful hospitality business in the 21st century requires not just the magic mix of taste and style with an acute business sense, but also a deep knowledge of the regulatory environment.

T

he Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 considerably increased the responsibilities of hospitality owners. With an overarching objective of ‘minimising harm’, owners must show actively how they are doing this. With a combined 30 years’ experience in alcohol licensing, Christchurch’s own Alcohol Consulting Group recognises that the knowledge required to gain and retain an alcohol license can be daunting for small and large businesses alike. Comprising specialists from a regulatory background, Consultants Helene Faass, Al Lawn and Jenn Ramsay have worked within the range of agencies that have an interest in the granting of licences. Jenn and Helene understand what agencies are looking for from potential licensees. They have seen licences refused and understand why; they know how agencies work, what they are looking

for and why they want things done a particular way. By using their knowledge and experience, they can explain to agencies and decision-makers why it might be difficult for a hospitality operator to respond to certain requirements. As well as agency experience, Al Lawn has been a District Licencing Committee member. As a decision-maker, he understands exactly what current decision-makers are looking for. In their previous roles, Helene, Jenn and Al have seen people struggle with what was being asked for and needing help. Working nationwide, the team can travel to clients at their premises. Seeing hospitality premises on site and in action enables them to give the best possible advice. Recognising that office hours do not apply in hospitality, they are available as and when they are needed. They bring a 360-degree approach to licencing. They’ll help with making

applications, training staff and all aspects of risk management, including alcohol management plans. They understand how to balance regulatory requirements with success in hospitality. “We minimise your compliance costs and help you to fully focus on the entertainment side of your business,” Helene says. “We perform a liaison role as well,” Jenn adds. “We work with the 2012 Act daily and we know it inside out, so we can help legal teams get to grips with paperwork and hearing preparation to get good results faster.” “We also strongly advise developers to consult from the outset about how design affects licencing,” Al says. “It will save you money and provide you with certainty.” Alcohol Consulting Group tailors assistance to the assessed risk of each premises, so that clients don’t end up paying more than they need.

t’s certainly evident in the range of unique accommodations in greater Canterbury. From luxury tree houses to glass pods and grain silos, this is what sweet dreams are truly made of. There are luxury treehouses just north of Kaikoura. In the city, a former prison now houses award-winning accommodation. In Little River, some clever creators have converted old grain silos into innovative apartments.

In Banks Peninsula you will find a hostel of ‘wooden tents’. There’s also plenty of glamping – that’s glamorous camping – options and woodburners and bathrooms ensure this is a year-round activity. There are an increasing number of ‘pods’ across Canterbury; glass eco-cabins which enable you to sleep surrounded by nature. You’ll find some snug little dome-shaped pods in Mt Lyford with proper lighting and heating.

In between penguin viewings, you’ll learn about the blue penguin and the monitoring, research, and rehabilitation programmes conducted at the facility. Oasis for the body & soul By Nicholas Henare

Two and a half hours from Christchurch, amongst the beach forest and rivers of the serene Lewis Pass Scenic Reserve, is the wonderful Maruia Hot Springs.

S

et in a lush bush-laden area, the facilities feature three thermally heated outdoor rock pools, one main indoor Japanese bath style thermal pool and discreet private pools which all overlook the meandering Maruia River. Overall, it is breathtakingly tranquil and little else could compare on a nationwide level. The heated pools and luxurious accommodation make for an exceptional mid-winter escape. The hotel can accommodate up to 50 but generally floats

around 40, giving it a very exclusive ambience that makes you feel it is yours and yours alone, although it is popular for work groups, with the team from ‘Trees and Bees Apiary’ there over Mother’s Day weekend when I visited. The steam room was unique, and I couldn’t handle it for long, but the dry sauna was perfect followed by the biggest challenge… the ice cold ‘plunge pool’. Invigorating is an understatement as your body is

instantly freezing, but it all adds to the fun. Mark Williams and wife Nicky were celebrating Nicky’s birthday during Mother’s Day weekend and the couple captured what Maruia Springs is best for; “It’s a romantic getaway from the stress of family and Christchurch for us. Why would you come here? It’s a treat!” You do feel special, that’s for sure. The dining and meals by the beautiful open fire are divine. I sampled some of Reefton’s finest gin, ‘The Little Biddy’, before tucking into one of the best Lamb Cutlets I’ve ever had, charred in Horopito leaves. Staff on hand that night, Doug and Steph, were southern hospitality at its finest, with exceptional local knowledge they were all too happy to share. Then it was off for another hot dip before heading to the exceptionally spacious room for a restful sleep. With 24/7 access to the hot pools, I was up again at 5am to take another dip, then another delicious meal overlooking the stunning view of the valley from the dining area. If you prefer, there’s private bathing available, which includes access to the public sauna and bathing experience. Then came what I consider the apex of my stay; a 1.5 hour full body massage at the talented hands of the thermal resort’s very own massage

therapist Julia. The pampering and aromatherapy, as well as the great wafts of lavender and other essential oils, is a spiritual experience. You find the stress of your week just melting away to a point where you think you’re almost asleep. Aches and pains evaporate and are replaced by a warm, relaxing bliss. As I meandered for a walk by the river, I thought about how I would sum up what Maruia is all about. Sitting by the fire, relaxing hot pools, food, service, Julia’s massage and isolated serenity make for a magical getaway for a couple wanting to reconnect or for a group to relax and have fun. It’s a true haven for the body and mind. Maruia has everything you need and it’s evident how the redevelopment team is so deserving of winning two World Luxury Spa Awards – Best Luxury Eco Spa Australasian regional winner and Best Luxury Mineral Spring Spa New Zealand winner, both in 2018. New Zealand Tourism has also awarded Maruia Hot Springs the prestigious Qualmark Silver rating. Find the Maruia Springs Thermal Resort at 1513 State Highway 7, Lewis Pass. Phone 03 523 8840 or visit www.maruiahotsprings.nz to find out more. Metropol May 23, 2019 31

Sunny Side Up By Clementine Page

This season the citrus-y hues are in town and they demand your attention. The beautiful hue of marigold illuminated the runway at New York Fashion Week and we’re expecting this sunny yellow to light up our wardrobes come winter.

T TRELISE COOPER SHOULDER LIKE IT’S HOT JACKET

he prestigious event saw models of fashion heavyweights Balenciaga, Valentino, Brandon Maxwell, Carolina Herrera and Oscar De La Renta sport the cheerful shade, paving the way for a 2019 fashion trend. Close to home, our very own Trelise Cooper has brought this beautiful bright to her current collections. It appears marigold is the new mustard as we see the golden hue, alongside paler tones like lemon and buttermilk, beginning to grace every item of clothing from hats to shoes. On the runway, yellow was presented both as an accent colour and as a headto-toe look and has since

been declared by many as the hottest colour of 2019. Marigold-coloured coats are trending in a ton of styles – faux fur, trench, cropped and puffer are coming in hot – and are the statement piece you’re looking for when it comes to black-on-black outfits. For those whose wardrobes are 90 percent black, lemonhued accessories or statement boots are the best way to inject a hint of sunshine into your look. Butter yellow makes for a dream pairing for both brights and more muted colourways, and if you want to turn heads, a suit in this shade is certainly a statement-maker. Stand out from the crowd this season by adding a handful of blazing yellow silhouettes to your winter capsule collection.

NEWEST DESIGN TALENT HITS STORES Wardrobes are, for many of us, in a constant state of evolution. Thankfully new talent is always on hand to satiate the need for the seasonal metamorphosis as we seek to renew, refresh and restore our sartorial stock.

M

illie Pux-Askew is one of the country’s prodigious design talents and, with her new 11-piece collection ‘Waiting for Summer’ now available instore at Ballantynes Contemporary Lounge and Ballantynes’ online store, she will be playing her own role in this stock-up. Millie shot from being a design student working on the outskirts of fashion, to being mentored by some of the

industry’s finest, after winning the 2018 Ballantynes Emerging Designer Competition last September. Inspired by romanticised memories of summer during the cold winter months, Millie’s ‘Waiting for Summer’ range is a refined extension of the collection that won the 23-yearold the Ballantynes’ Emerging Designer title, a competition which attracted significant national interest and was judged and supported by fashion

industry heavyweights such as Karen Walker and twenty-seven names designers Rachel Easting and Anjali Burnett. Millie says her collection is inspired by the feelings of nostalgia you grasp onto throughout winter months. “The fabrics and silhouettes speak to this feeling, with a strong contrast between soft handwoven cottons and heavyduty oil skin fabric.” The Ballantynes Emerging Designer Competition win also provided Millie with more than $28,000 in materials, publicity and mentoring from some of New Zealand’s most successful fashion industry insiders, with support from some insiders of her own. “Mum and dad have been here on a few late nights helping me sew buttons or cut out fabrics – their support has been amazing. “All the garments have been made in Wellington by myself or my machinist. I felt it was really

vital that, especially for my first collection, I was really involved. I wanted a grasp of the full process.” And even though her eye for design has been long-running – she hand-sewed her first t-shirt when she was 13 years old (a project Millie says was a disaster) – the idea of having her own label seemed like a distant, unattainable thing. “The Ballantynes Emerging Designer competition has really pushed me to give it my best shot. It’s made me realise that it can be possible – it’s been a huge opportunity to see what I can achieve with the support of the mentoring team and the incredible Ballantynes crew.” Ballantynes’ Head of Buying Megan McKee says it’s been incredibly rewarding to be part of Millie’s journey so far. “The Ballantynes Emerging Designer judging team knew Millie offered a fresh and unique fashion perspective and this collection is just that. Her use of fabrics and the whimsical nature of her designs are beautiful, and we are delighted to being able to showcase her work. We have no doubt Millie Pux-Askew will be one of the next generation of Kiwi designers producing some of the best fashion in the world.”

It was once hot, then very much not, but it seems on the cusp of winter 2019 that we are set to once again embrace the nostalgic familiarity and dependable practicality of corduroy.

A

KAREN WALKER SPRING READY TO WEAR 2019

s designers from Karen Walker and twenty-seven names, Working Style and Leo+Be saturate the market with winter warmers that capture the heavy yet plush aesthetic of this ribbed fabric, we look at the long and bumpy road of this sartorial mainstay. Corduroy is believed to have first laid its roots down in the ancient Egyptian city of Al-Fustat, which became something of a ground zero of tough woven fabrics around the second century. While the city was later burnt down in the midst of the Crusades, its legacy was the predecessor fabric to

corduroy, which became known as ‘fustian’ on account of its namesake. While heavy duty and hard wearing was the name of this sartorial game, it didn’t feature the raised cords we have come to associate with corduroy. While the story of how corduroy got its cords is up for debate, its 21st-century resurgence isn’t. Skirting the perfect line between form and function, it can be dressed up or down, it holds its shape and is easy to care for. So if you’re after a comfortable, casual and yet cosy look for this season, corduroy might just be the answer.

irly-girls rejoice as feminine florals take the front seat… Be the prettiest yogini in the studio thanks to the dusky pink, tropical green, baby blue and pretty white floral/ faunal designs that are making their way into gym-gear trends. Tomboys never fear, monochrome flower patterns are also blooming and, with graphic and abstract prints among the styles, there’s something to suit all tastes. Speaking of patterns, leopard print and snakeskin have also slithered their way into the activewear arena, as we see the familiar pattern leaping its way onto tank tops, short, sports bras and leggings. Matching sets are forever

stylish – we’re certain a leopard print fit-out will have fashionsavvy gym-goers feeling extra fierce. Pulled from the depths of the 80s, bike shorts are back in full force. This season’s modernised, longer styles are surprisingly super-duper flattering on the body, and a ton of patterns are out there vying for your attention. As we become increasingly aware of fast-fashion’s environmental impact, sustainable sportswear is also on the rise. Brands using ecoconscious materials such as sustainably-sourced merino wool and recycled polyester made from plastic are proving to be on-trend in 2019.

A positively well winter

U

Apart from yearning for winter to be over, there are many practical steps we can take to safeguard against winter illness; the first step is to think positive – think winter wellness!

nichem Prestons Pharmacy have everything covered when it comes to equipping us for this most challenging season – from flu jabs to expert advice and remedy recommendations from owner and pharmacist Ed Dawwas and his friendly team. Flu inoculations are integral to winter health, but Ed also recommends natural supplements as extra protection against succumbing to those pesky viral or bacterial infections.

Vitamin C is a natural immune booster for all seasons, but in winter especially, it helps reduce the severity and duration of ailments, as well as providing antioxidant support in both tissue and wound repair. Gut and digestive health is a major contributor in boosting immunity and, because probiotics are designed to maintain and restore good gut bacteria, probiotics are superstar supplements when it comes to winter wellness. Another star supplement and natural active vaccine is Buccaline. A 1x7 tablet treatment provides three months protection against bacterial complications of colds - i.e. sneezes, runny noses, sore throats and coughs, while a second course provides full winter protection. It’s the ideal additional protection to the flu vaccine, so for optimal protection, both are recommended. With these supplements available in tablet, powder and liquid form, Ed and his team happily advise customers on which will work best for them. Sashaying into Style As designers bring back the boho trend with its sun-kissed neutral shades, we’re seeing a healthy dose of fringing in the mix.

By Clementine Page

F

ringing is one of the hottest new looks shimmying its way down the runway this year and it’s not hard to see why. This decorative trim came to fruition in a big way in 1920s; flapper dresses reigned supreme with the Charleston dress remembered as one of fashion’s most iconic milestones. Fringing fell out of fashion briefly, only to return in the 1950s in full force –

this time with a rebellious twist. The trend went strong through the 60s and 70s, taking a bit more of a traditional turn as designers became inspired by the original Native American fringe. In 2019 it appears the trend of tassels is here to stay. While some of the fringe fashion trends of this year stay true to the western origins, many

others are purely modern takes on the style – party dresses, jumpsuits, miniskirts and bags are all featuring the fringe in a multitude of colours and lengths. Gucci, Givenchy and Michael Kors are just three of fashion’s best who have had a play with this fun and funky detailing. Keep a look out for this swinging material as it emerges

on the shoulders of jackets, the hems of skirts and on bags, boots and even belts. Lift a look from casual to tastefully bohemian; the trick is to stick to one fringe piece and keep the rest of your ensemble neutral to avoid looking too cowgirl. Strutting your stuff will never be the same without the swing of fringe – a trend that’s made for twirling!

Smile with Confidence

Good quality dentures play a significant role in each individual’s physical and psychological health. Poor aesthetics and ill-functioning dentures can lead to poor diet and low self-esteem which can affect the most basic and essential activities in our daily lives from eating to socialising. If these problems go unaddressed, it can cause constant stress on a daily basis which may even lead to depression, as found in many international studies.

I

t is paramount to have good, comfortable and well-functioning dentures to eat well especially for the elderly, who are at higher risk of agerelated health conditions such as diabetes,

arthritis, heart troubles, high blood pressure and cholesterol issues. A well-balanced nutritional diet to manage these conditions in-conjunction with the medications is important.

Merivale Denture Clinic The Experts in Dentures With specialised expertise and leading edge technology, we handcraft the finest quality dentures with optimal fit, comfort and natural aesthetics, customised just for you.

Good aesthetics in dentures are also essential, as it contributes significantly to individuals’ confidence and psychological wellbeing. Scientific studies suggest that only a second is all it takes to start determining someone’s first impression visually, like attractiveness and character, where facial appearance plays a powerful role in how we perceive and treat each other, hence resulting in our efforts to maintain our aesthetic standards. Dentures, especially with full plates, not only restore your missing teeth but also support and plump up a big portion of the facial features like the areas around your lips, cheeks and the lower jaw, which determines the profile of half your face. With the right expertise, customised dentures can greatly enhance your appearance and function by providing adequate support to help restore the youthful look back into your smile. At Merivale Denture Clinic, Thomas’s specialised expertise, skills and friendly down-to-earth manner, provides only the finest quality customised dentures to help all those in need to improve their ability to eat, talk and smile with confidence enhancing physical and psychological wellbeing to ultimately improve each individual’s quality of life.

Although a large bra size can be portrayed as desirable, the reality for many women is that large breasts can cause physical and emotional discomfort. Carrying the extra weight can result in back, neck or shoulder pain and can limit physical activities. Some women also experience feelings of self-consciousness and struggle to find wellfitting clothes.

AF TE R

BE FO RE

T

he good news is Dr Grant Bellaney, founder of the Encoré Cosmetic Clinic, offers women an alternative to traditional breast reduction surgery, with extremely good results. “Most breasts, particularly in women over the age of 40, consist of 40 to 60 percent fat, so the removal of some of that fat through a procedure called tumescent liposuction can give a significant reduction in breast size,” he says. While traditional breast reduction surgery is carried out by plastic or general surgeons, breast reduction procedures using tumescent liposuction have been developed and practised by dermatological surgeons such as Dr Bellaney, who are skin and fat specialists. The procedure was first used in the 1980s and has an outstanding safety record. “The procedure also has huge advantages over traditional surgery. It is a form of ‘keyhole surgery’ so results in little or no scarring as the small incisions the procedure is done through heal very quickly, usually without

needing sutures. It is simpler and less painful than surgery and the recovery time is far quicker. It is also safer because it is performed under tumescent anaesthetic, which has fewer risks than surgery that is carried out under general anaesthetic. “There are also fewer side effects. With traditional surgery about 10 to 25 percent of patients can experience a loss of sensitivity around the nipples or an inability to breastfeed afterwards. With tumescent liposuction, the risk reduces to less than one percent. “It’s a day procedure, so woman can go home afterwards and are usually back to their regular routine within a few days.” Dr Bellaney is the only specialist in the South Island performing this technique and has successfully performed this procedure on hundreds of women over the last 10 years.” Phone the day surgery clinic at 248 Papanui Road in Merivale, 03 356 0214 or visit the website www.encorehealth.co.nz.

Cranio Therapy Success

Gill Redden constantly sees the consequence of concussions or bad head knocks that were never identified at the time of the initial accident. That’s because an impact anywhere always sets up a chain of events which the body tries to accommodate for as long as it can.

G

ill, as a specialist CranioSacral Therapist, uses internationally accepted Cranio techniques on the full body. These techniques loosen up head bones, the membranes surrounding the brain which then form the spinal canal, tailbones, organs and nerves. By treating the whole body, it assists the nervous system to stay healthy or to repair. This can potentially help with a reduction in pain or problems far later on in life. Gill’s comprehensive website lists positive testimonials ranging from rugby players who suffered head knocks, to others suffering ongoing issues who have found relief after

attending the Bealey Avenue clinic. The site clearly explains ‘What is a Concussion?’ and ‘How CranioSacral Therapy Works’. Trauma or any head knock, Gill says, can lead to chronic brain damage and malfunction, yet problems may not show up until later in life. Symptoms may include migraines, headaches, dizziness, tinnitus, nausea, double-vision, fatigue, poor sleeping, vomiting, neck pain, nerve problems, poor concentration, aggression, depression and anxiety. Problems can appear sometimes immediately, but other times years later, Gill explains. For more information, visit www. concussion.nz or phone 03 365 7801.

Canterbury Bride

Stepping Up

3.

At the halter Halternecks give off the ultimate sexy Grecian vibe, particularly in shades like sage green, silvery lavender, pale rose and powder blue. This style is coming in hot after Meghan Markle stepped out for her wedding reception last May in that stunning Stella McCartney number, setting the precedent for other brides and bridesmaids in 2019.

4.

Get it white White bridesmaid dresses?! Shock horror! White has been a no-go for bridesmaids since the beginning of time, but it appears this trend is picking up the pace. The trick is to find the right white bridesmaid dress that will complement but not outshine the bride’s own gown – white is a particularly great option for bridesmaids if the bride is going for a coloured dress. Looking for something a bit more cutting edge? White jumpsuits might just be the answer.

5.

All in the details Embroidered detailing was big news on the bridal catwalk in 2018, and this year it’s made its way to the maids themselves. Intricately embellished gowns are feminine and elegant, and are proving to be a big hit amongst the maximalist and boho brides. Full-blown glitzy or a dainty touch of detail – either way, it’s sure to turn heads.

6.

Statement sleeves Long gone are 2018’s fitted sleeves as 2019 brings us sleeves of sophistication. A dress with barely-there capped sleeves that grace the shoulders is a pretty alternative to a plain old strapless number (top tip: a lace bodice adds a cute vintage twist). Flutter and ruffled sleeves are the ultimate combination bohemian and luxe, and they’re particularly ideal for maids who want to cover the tops of their arms. If you’re on the hunt for something a bit different – look no further: while flared sleeves are a bold choice, they’ve got just the right dose of dramatic flair.

By Clementine Page

Bridesmaids are stepping up the style this year! From bold colours to statement detailing, we’ve got the lowdown all the latest styles you can expect to see stepping into the spotlight in 2019.

1.

Sunny style Yellow is simply just magical isn’t it? This sunny colour appears to be trending everywhere in fashion as of late and it’s found its way into the world of weddings. Brighten up a dreary day or embrace warm weather with bright yellow dresses and complementing flowers and/or decorations. From pale buttercup yellow to deep golden mustard, there’s a shade for every maid.

2.

Wrapped up This simple, classic dress has been a staple of every woman’s wardrobe. Thanks to its comfort, class, functionality and ability to flatter a multitude of figures, wrap dresses are certainly having a moment in the bridal spotlight. Elegant peaches, pastel tones and neutral shades are proving particularly popular for this effortlessly chic look.

Going grey gracefully and letting yourself go… there is an enormous difference! In fact, according to Master Stylist Vicki Ogden-O’Fee from V For Hair & Beauty Merivale as seen on TV, you don’t have to be on the far side of 65 to be a ‘silver siren’!

G

Bespoke eco-conscious jewellery Via Sollertia Jewellers has been making sustainability a top priority long before it was at the forefront of customer demand.

etting tired of the time and expense of getting hair coloured as soon as the greys show? Want to avoid the chemicals used to colour your hair? Perhaps you’re travelling more and don’t want to find a new hairdresser in every port you visit or maybe you’re ready to embrace your maturity and its natural beauty, now’s the time to rock your silver locks. “Social media sites like Pinterest, Facebook and Instagram feature women of all ages proudly wearing silver-grey hair with blending tones, soft shades and beautiful hues like sand, iris, silver, dove, lilac and silver ash – at all lengths too,” Vicki says. “Get inspired, search the net, talk to your stylist and have a change!”

A

t every stage of the jewellery-making process – literally from design right through to the final product – special care and attention is taken to ensure their footprint on the earth is as light as possible. It’s been a prominent philosophy of the independent jewellers, located at 11 New Regent St, since the beginning. From using handmade recycled rimu in their packaging, to creating stunning bespoke designs made from re-refined New Zealand-sourced gold and fair-trade diamonds, they’ll even go one step further and hand deliver your items. “We’re aware of our footprint on the earth, this is something we can do,” says designer Clare. “It doesn’t leave here from design to the finished product… they’re not only beautiful, but sustainable as well. We all have to start making a difference.” Find Via Sollertia on Instagram and Facebook. Phone 366 8001 or visit www.viasollertia.co.nz for more information.

CAULIFLOWER ‘STEAKS’

Vegetables centre stage

take

By Kayte John

Meat and three vege has long been a staple of Kiwi dinners, but it seems the culinary tables are turning. Vegetables are increasingly taking centre stage and not just for the vegetarians amongst us.

e seem to be more open to a variety of vegetables that were once considered undesirable as we witness the emergence of cauliflower rice and zucchini noodles – showing us all that we can get creative in the kitchen. Whether it’s roasting an entire cabbage, creating spaghetti squash or even giving mushroom steaks a whirl - the options are endless on how we consume our vege and this plantbased food trend is not slowing down! Search data from Google Trends has seen an impressive worldwide increase in the interest in veganism from 2004 to 2018. Christchurch restaurant Town Tonic recently promoted a plant-based degustation dinner. However, this is not a first for owner and chef Jamie Bennett. Bennett, who also owns Story on New Regent Street, has been increasingly adding plant-based dishes to his menus for the past five years. “The seven course plant-based degustation at Town Tonic included whole foods, gluten free and refined sugar free courses,” Bennett explains. “This dining concept of plant-based foods is becoming more popular as diners are more open to the idea of ditching meat or dairy a couple of nights a week. “People are more aware and educated about food and where it has come from. They also consider the health impacts when deciding on the food they eat, which naturally leads to eating more vegetables.”

Crunchy Carnival Salad

SERVES

6

This spicy and sweet salad brings together all our favourite flavours from the famous Notting Hill Carnival – great for a relaxed healthy lunch on a sunny day. Make extra to pack into a lunchbox. It also goes really well with griddled tofu or jackfruit roasted in a spicy jerk or BBQ sauce. Ingredients 30g fresh coriander ¼ red cabbage 8 spring onions 2 carrots 1 red pepper 2 mangoes 1 avocado 1 large fresh red chilli 50g egg-free mayonnaise 1 tsp–1 tbsp Encona West Indian hot sauce 1 tsp maple syrup 2 limes 200g sweetcorn Salt and black pepper FOR THE SWEET POTATOES 2 large sweet potatoes (about 675g) 1 tbsp olive oil ½ tbsp chilli flakes Salt and black pepper FOR THE RICE & BEANS 5 sprigs fresh thyme 2 garlic cloves 1 x 400g tin kidney beans 1 x 400ml tin full-fat coconut milk 100ml water ¼ tsp ground allspice 1 tsp salt ¼ tsp black pepper 200g long-grain rice

Method Preheat oven to 180°C. First cook the sweet potatoes. Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into 2cm chunks. Spread over the baking tray, sprinkle over the oil, chilli flakes and a little seasoning. Roast for 25–30 minutes, turning halfway. Meanwhile, make the rice and beans. Pick and roughly chop the coriander leaves and set aside. Tie the coriander stems and thyme together with string to make a bouquet garni. Peel the garlic. Drain the kidney beans. Put the saucepan over a medium heat. Add the coconut

milk, water, allspice, salt, pepper, garlic and bouquet garni and bring to a simmer. Wash the rice under cold water until it runs clear and tip into the saucepan. Stir, reduce the heat to a very gentle simmer, put the lid on and cook until all the liquid has been absorbed, about 13–16 minutes. Take the pan off the heat. Remove the garlic and bouquet garni. Fold in the kidney beans. Put the lid back on for 5 minutes. Prep the rest of the fresh ingredients. Shred the cabbage, cut the spring onions in half and

shred them lengthways. Peel the carrots and then peel them into ribbons. Trim the pepper and slice into thin strips. Slice the mangoes lengthways down either side of the stone, spoon out the flesh and slice thinly. Halve and carefully stone the avocados by tapping the stone firmly with the heel of a knife so that it lodges in the stone, then twist and remove. Scoop out the flesh, then slice thinly. Rip the stem from the chilli, cut it in half, scrape out the seeds and slice thinly. Put the egg-free mayonnaise,

hot sauce and maple syrup into a large bowl. Halve one of the limes, squeeze in the juice and stir to mix. Add the cabbage, spring onions, carrots, pepper, chilli, coriander leaves and sweetcorn. Toss to coat in the dressing. Serve the rice into large bowls. Spoon over the roasted sweet potatoes. Pile over the salad and top with the avocado and mango slices. Squeeze more lime over the avocado. Quarter the remaining lime and place a wedge on each bowl. Serve immediately. Metropol May 23, 2019 51

The Monday Room fans have much to look forward to in merry-making and mischief as Katy and her crew prepare their wonderland for the pursuit of pleasure. There will be sidewalk entertainment and the best in live music, with top-drawer guest performers enhancing your dining experience, which will go something like this…

As the White Rabbit fluffs out your napkin and Alice pours you a complimentary glass of champers, courtesy of Trust the Chef and Trust the Somm, you cast your eyes over the menu and ponder the feast that awaits. The item Degustations certainly sounds intriguing; it’s described as tastings of the small plate collection of autumn dishes (with bewitching names like Forbidden Fruit, Give Them Pumpkin to Talk About, Oh Deer! French Kiss and Six Beet Under), followed by tastings from the large plate collection (with noir names like The Silence of the Lambs, Three Little Pigs, Beauty and the Beef and The Black Eyed Peas). For a bit of something-on-the-side, you’re truly tempted by tantalising side plates of Roasted Cauliflower, Lentils, Coconut Yoghurt; Salt Baked Parsnip and Fermented Parsnip; Smoked Potato, Burnt Leek; Crispy Autumn Root Skins, Smoked Mayonaise; Salad Greens, Pear, Almonds, and Maple Vinaigrette. Oh, how divinely decadent! As you discreetly mop your drooling mouth, you catch sight of the sweet plates collection and look up to find the Cheshire Cat giving you his most wicked grin, while the Mad Hatter cackles his joy as he relieves you of your menu. “Will that be a bit of everything for you then, my dear?” he asks. You weakly nod your assent as your tummy rumbles. You sip your champers and succumb to the sweetest surrender you will ever know. researched ways to adopt a plantbased diet following his father’s quintuple bypass surgery and the birth of his first child. Chef Tom was introduced to veganism through his wife, and after working in kitchens throughout Sydney, Edinburgh and Toronto, he was inspired to bring his passion and techniques home. With the concept in place, they set to work preparing all their own sauces and fermented pickles at the historic British Hotel in Lyttelton, packaging them up with the finest ingredients, and delivering them all over the city. “People love how varied the meals are, and they’re learning new techniques,” Cole says. In 2019 we can expect to see dozens more environmentally friendly options on the shelves of the organic, biodynamic and/or vegan variety. Head to www.vegetarians.co.nz for a comprehensive vegan wine list.

Prosecco passion Prosecco? I’ll take two please! Good news: these once-haughty bubbles are no longer just reserved for the Christmas banquet. A golden, sophisticated Italian beauty, prosecco is generally a lot easier on both the pocket and the palate than its better-known sibling champagne. These sparkling suds will continue to grow in popularity this year in New Zealand following its fashionable ubiquity overseas in 2018.

Online creative store Etsy is proclaiming 2019 as the year of maximalism – encouraging us all in their 2018 trend report to step away from the ultraminimalist look and embrace the bold in our home.

aximalism is everything minimalism is not; where minimalism forces us to make decisions about what we really need, maximalism allows us to eschew those hard choices entirely. It invites us to indulge in everything we desire and lets us express our individuality. What was once considered clutter is now on-trend, as maximalism is all about adding clashing patterns, statement home décor and vibrant colours to our home. Even IKEA has swapped minimalism for maximalism as they introduced FÖREMÅL – a fun and quirky collection that includes skull-shaped vases, dog candleholders, and more maximalist masterpieces. IKEA’s creative leader Nike Karlsson said, “Life at home is about more than functions and solutions. We need art that stir-up emotions.” Maximalism style works best when it’s imperfect. There’s no limit to this eclectic trend and you won’t mess it up if you’re filling your home with the things you love, or make you feel glamorous. There is absolutely no need to match furniture or décor – in fact, that’s the best part. So, don’t be intimated; rebel against the often unrealistic quest for simplicity in your home and let your passion and personalisation create a truly unique space that you can call your own work of art.

Green Credentials By Kayte John

There are plenty of good reasons why you should fill your home with houseplants. They don’t just look good by adding texture and colour to your home, but they’re good for us too!

F

rom flourishing foliage to jungle inspired botanicals, houseplants have sprouted their way back into our lives. So, what are the hot picks for indoor greenery this year? Here are some of the plants that are growing on us.

1.

Ferns – Gracing the covers of interior design magazines, ferns are set to be the leader in 2020 indoor plant trends. Ferns are ideal for bathrooms as they thrive on humidity and need little light.

2.

3.

Succulents – The succulent craze is not slowing down and these easyto-please houseguests will survive indoor conditions with minimal effort. Monstera deliciosa – Nicknamed the ‘Swiss cheese plant’ because of the holes in its leaves, this large exotic plant is renowned for creating a tropical atmosphere in the home.

4.

Chain of hearts – Oh, be still my beating heart! This trailing plant looks beautiful and is perfect for hanging pots.

5.

Fiddle leaf fig – With lustrous, wide shaped leaves, this leafy tree will create a graceful backdrop of luxurious fresh foliage in your home.

6.

Ficus elastica – Want an easycare indoor tree with large, glossy leaves? This rubber plant can reach staggering heights within just a few years, making a dramatic statement in your abode. When it comes to display, don’t be afraid to experiment with different coloured pots in different shapes and sizes; or hang plants from the ceiling with macramé hangers.

It’s All About People! The beauty of working with and meeting so many diverse and interesting people is that you get to form enduring relationships. These relationships are forged over many years, invariably involving the numerous ups and downs that life throws at you whilst helping both your personal and professional growth. So, it’s hard when you have to say goodbye, not goodbye forever but goodbye to that incredible relationship you’ve enjoyed whilst working together.

our beautiful Legends Mark Brownlee, a double Olympian and deeply fine man, can I say, thank you. Despite the fact that you are officially ‘retired’, it’s lovely seeing you still popping into the office, helping and encouraging others as you have always done. Our other beloved Legend, Deb Harvey, is taking time to enjoy a growing family and other interests, and whilst it’s a period of sweet sadness for me, it’s a new time for Deb. People are the lifeblood of any organisation, its fabric and its conscience. I like that. I also like that as a business owner you must have the ability to work with not only different types of personalities and skills, but different ages. This brings me to the millennials. With a large sales and support team, it’s been a steep learning curve at times working with all different ages and demographics. Having two sons who are millennials has made it a little bit easier and I’ve learnt or re-learnt a number of things. Amongst the lessons are the following: a) Atmosphere is sometimes more important than remuneration; b) Engagement is critical and the belief that the company they work for has a purpose; and

Recently, we have wished two of our longestserving team members farewell as they look to pursue activities outside real estate. Yes, I have to remind myself there is a world outside real estate work and its call is strong, often growing stronger as the years go by! The collective tenure of these two ‘Legends’ (our in-house term for anyone who has been with us for 15 years or more and has had a career of exceptional character) is in excess of 40 years. They are special, the most special of people. For many seasons now, neutral interiors have been a firm favourite. Many of us have been captivated by the soothing Scandinavian design, but lately design trends are dipping their brushes into darker hues and we’re starting to see a wealth of bold colours being introduced into the home.

s we head into the season of the winter blues, let’s not let our minds wander back to summer days, but instead embrace the dark arts by introducing a deep and moody palette into our interiors. After all, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of walking into a room that is filled with character and the dark effect can create this – reminding us of those rainy days when you just want to curlup and read a book, or watch a movie with a hot drink and blanket… bliss! Dark and moody is not all about dark coloured walls; it’s more a combination of colours and prints with more of an emphasis on a darker palette showing through for an overall moody effect. If you want to take a walk on the dark side, focus on one room to ensure you achieve a well designed dark and moody interior. A good place to start is to select a colour for your walls. Too often people shy away from using dark colours in fear of making a room feel smaller and, while

that can sometimes be the case, it isn’t always a bad thing. If you are daring enough to take on a darker colour, paint the walls, but paint the ceiling white. This will help to increase the perceived room height and make interiors seem much more spacious than they are. Dark furnishings can also create a warm and inviting space, and can be a great change for rooms such as study spaces, formal lounges and dining rooms. You can also include lots of layers and textures to your décor and furnishings – for example, timbers and soft furnishings with similar dark tones will break up the space, offering personality to your moody space which oozes style and sophistication. Regardless of how you incorporate this trend, interior trends come and go whereas a home is forever, therefore the key is to make a home feel unique and your own. However, you have to admit, there is something enigmatic and stylish in these inky hues that can captivate even the most scandi-style devotee.

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY Award-winning local company, D.J. Hewitt Builders Ltd, is leading the way when it comes to giving back to the community it’s been a part of for nearly 25 years.

ounder Daryl Hewitt is passionate about making a positive difference in Canterbury, supporting local initiatives, projects and our young people striving for sporting success. When he’s not overseeing one of the region’s leading building companies and its 20 plus crew, he can be found working hard behind the scenes to

help people and organisations achieve their goals. A recent project has been helping with fundraising for the Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade, which has seen the brigade successfully purchase a new 4WD truck. The list of ongoing sponsorship also continues, with the team noting a long association with New Zealand KartSport Champion Matt

Hamilton and his wife Tiffany Chittenden. Daryl has also supported Tom Alexander, who also came through go-karting and is now racing super utes in Australia, and sponsored James Munro in the Toyota Racing Series. He has also been a main sponsor for the Ferrymead Bays Football Club since 2013, supported Albion Softball, and has sponsored Coast to Coast cyclists. “We like to be involved with people who strive to win and need help,” Daryl explains. “It’s so tough to get ahead and get sponsorship, and I really enjoy watching them grow and giving back to the

community; it makes people feel better.” Following the Christchurch earthquakes, Daryl took on another project close to his heart, to bring a little joy back to the local community he loves so much. By teaming up with Christchurch artist Tony Cribb, known for his iconic Tin Man images, they set about creating signs and posters that covered up the shipping containers lining Peacocks Gallop and at Redcliffs School. “Over the quake period, the kids got the biggest kick out of seeing the Tin Man work, it was huge. I did that to help people’s emotional state after the quake.” Daryl says as the community starts to get back to normality, they’re as busy as ever, but always looking towards the next job. “As a company, we’re a family. All the sub-trades get together a lot for meetings as a huge group to look at things coming up. We have about 20 on the team and one guy has been with us 24 years.” And, of course, there’s plenty more sponsorship and community-focused plans in the pipeline, so watch this space!

Kitchen cupboards starting to look worn or dated? Here’s a novel idea: throw them away!

T

he spaces within our sanctuaries have gone from minimalist to maximalist in the past few months and, with it the need to pretend there is no ‘stuff’ has gone out the window.

Inspired by hotel and retail spaces, open shelving is adding to the bold statements we are seeking to make in our homes. That doesn’t mean we need to put all the clutter on display.

ADVANTAGES OF PVC FENCING Affordable • Strong • Sturdy • Durable • Smart • Clean • Green

Much like styling throw pillows on a couch, there’s quite an art to styling your open cabinets. Start with a palette determined by existing colour schemes then take the opportunity to be creative with the decorative process by adding boxes, jars, draped plants and other items. Neutral palettes are always a great place to start. White dishes, wooden cutting boards and creamy or clear canisters provide a base that is easy to switch around for special occasions or when you get bored. Art is an easy way to bring colour and personality to your open shelves. Glass storage jars of varying sizes and heights add both form and function. If in

doubt, Pinterest and Instagram are a prime store of inspiration. Combine cook books and kitchen items. Books can be neatly arranged horizontally or vertically. Top stacks with small objects and then throw in larger items, such as vases, for variety. Finally, open shelving is a blank canvas for careful and curated arrangements that give visitors an insight into you and your family, so make it yours! Simple but effective, open shelving allows you to add a touch of your own personality or store extra ingredients. It also comes with a level of accountability – with nowhere to hide mess, keeping the space tidy is a must and it does mean you should probably eschew that old chipped dinnerware.

Moody Pink

B.

C.

By Kayte John

For anyone with a passion for all things house and home, you’ll know that the power of pink is making its appearance in the abode, but in a much more soothing and smokier tone known as dusky pink.

W

hether it’s painting a room, or subtle pink touches, it is definitely a trend that’s not going

1.

anywhere fast. If you need some convincing, take a look at these three ways you can incorporate dusky pink into your home.

Paint it pink – From the floor to the ceiling, transform your home into a sanctuary with dusky pink walls. This comforting tone will add warmth to your room and make a feminine statement. The great thing about this more mature pink is that not only does it pair well with neutral tones, but the soft shade also invites you to play with colours and get away from the matchy-matchy. Dusky pink can be matched with unexpected patterns like leopard print and floral which fits the bill for maximalism – a trend that’s encouraging us all to step away from the ultra-minimalist look and embrace the bold in our home.

2. Dusky décor – If you’re still a little wary about the whole dusky pink thing, then take a step back from the walls and look to your furniture and décor. Integrating colourful accents into your existing setup can be a great transition to a more daring interior palette. Choose a velvet blush chair, plush pink curtains that pool to the floor, or a patterned rug with hints of rose that will lift up your space. Dusky pink also pairs well with antique brass, metalwork (think copper) and ivory. This will give a more edgier and urban finish and stop it feeling too feminine.

3. A pop of pink – A pop of pink will certainly give your space a shake up. Try taking the tone into the bedroom and swap your current duvet for dusky pink one or mix up your throw pillows with a range of beautiful pinks. This will add warmth to the room and the colour is neutral enough to pair with almost anything. Grey is a popular choice to pair with dusky pink, but the opportunities are endless for this muted, but oh so stylish colour.

Cement to be By Kayte John

It’s edgy, industrial and proving to be an enduring design element in the home – the concrete trend is bringing New York luxe into everyday homes.

I

HANDKRAFTED OBI CONCRETE DINING TABLE

t might not seem like an obvious choice for your home, but the grey stone is not to be ignored as interior design trends continue to focus on natural materials rather than just colours and textures. From concrete sinks to cement tiles, there’s a huge influx of concrete accessories for the home that can bring a subtle yet sophisticated edge to your interior. Why not add concrete accessories for a striking aesthetic appeal or go bold with concrete walls or floors? Concrete floors may seem like a daring option, but they are a natural choice and work well in an open space. You can emphasise the industrial style with design elements such a steel and wood, or you can use textiles like velvet furniture to add a soft, luxurious feel to your abode.

places and low in others, creating possible tripping points and repair was necessary. They faced major constraints, such as mall hours, a zero dust tolerance, limited access, health and safety factors, and a timeframe of less than eight weeks to complete works over the Christmas period! The Smartlift team designed a matrix of 437x300mm holes to be core drilled through the 200280mm thick concrete, holes to be excavated down 800mm, concrete jacking pads to be poured and cured and screw jacks installed. An orchestra of staff working simultaneously and meticulously were able to lift the slab to the required datum. Once the lift was complete and to spec, lightweight aerated concrete was then pumped into the holes and under the floor to completely fill the cavities created by the lift – up to 40mm in places. FACELIFT FOR “T HISTORIC PUMP HOUSE The Pump House on Tuam Street is one of “those” places. hese are architectural antiques,” says Paddy Snowdon, co-owner of City Salvage Contractors, which operates The Pump House. It’s a collection of buildings built in the 1880s as the central focus of Christchurch’s (then) modern, new sewerage system. By the 1950s, the plant was no longer needed and in the late 1980s Paddy and wife, Jackie, bought it. Earthquake repairs started in late 2017 are nearing completion. “We’re pretty happy with the progress,”

Paddy says. “Higgs are doing a great job.” Higgs Construction Project Manager Johnny Clark is managing the work and says, “we’ve done quite a lot of masonry improvements and cosmetic work over and above the earthquake strengthening”. The restoration was not in the strengthening strategy, but Paddy says once work started it was apparent that it urgently needed doing. In addition to their own investment, Paddy and Jackie are grateful for grants from the CCC Heritage Incentive Grant Fund and the Govt Heritage EQUIP fund enabling the project to go ahead. Due for completion by the end of the year, The Pump House remains open for business, with Sales Manager Bruce Nikolaison keeping the yard ticking over and still enjoying the challenge after 30 years in the job. The new look Pump House will continue to be a part of Canterbury history, purveying architectural antiques. It’s a labour of love. “I’ve just got a passion for old buildings,” Paddy says.

here is no doubt that our region has been through some challenging times over the last few years, so coming together for something positive has never been more important. That’s why we are so excited about our upcoming Westpac Champion Business Awards. The Chamber has been organising these business awards for over 16 years now and we are proud that they continue to be an opportunity for the Waitaha Canterbury business community to come together to showcase their success. They are a real celebration of our region’s best, recognising and rewarding the organisations that embody innovation and excellence and ultimately help to shape the future of Canterbury and Aotearoa New Zealand. The awards are a fantastic way for businesses to showcase their team’s achievements, and even just being nominated can contribute to a positive, engaging culture. It’s always so heartening to see the immense pride on the faces of all those involved at the end of the programme. If you are a local business or not-forprofit, we encourage you to enter your organisation in these awards. To reflect the truly diverse nature of our region, there is a whole range of categories this year, including social enterprise, so there is something there for everyone. We also hope you will be able to join us and over 1200 other local business people at the awards ceremony on 18 September to help us celebrate what drives success in Canterbury.

O

ne of the things I’m most proud of being able to help deliver as part of our Government is Mana Ake – Stronger for Tomorrow – a new mental health programme that gives every young person in Canterbury access to a mental health worker through their school. This policy is now fully rolled out, with 219 different primary and intermediate schools in Canterbury now being part of the programme. This offers children who need it one-on-one and group sessions to help them deal with anxiety, depression and other mental health issues. We know that mental health is a major issue for our young people. The shock of the earthquakes and the trauma of the slow, grinding years of recovery have seen demand for mental health services amongst young people in our region reach twice the national average. Teachers and parents will have seen this for themselves – young people unable to learn because of anxiety and developmental delays. That’s why we’ve invested $27m in getting every child in Canterbury the support they need. In just one year, Mana Ake has supported 942 children individually and 578 children in groups. That’s a lot of children that have been listened to and had their issues taken seriously. We’ve also heard from parents who tell us Mana Ake was a huge help for children in the wake of the 15 March attack. This is a Government that is taking mental health seriously, investing in our children’s wellbeing and tackling the big, long term issues in our community.

t Ministry of Awesome, we support innovation and high growth startups because we know that a dynamic startup ecosystem will transform this city with future jobs, industries and global relevance. For NZ startups, it’s been challenging to access the capital required to scale global from NZ. But the fundraising landscape is changing quickly. Our angel networks are getting stronger, new funds are being established and interest in NZ startups is gaining ground. According to New Zealand Venture Investment Fund (NZVIF), total annual investment in NZ early stage ventures was around $100m in 2018 - an extraordinary rate of growth compared to the $30m invested in 2007. Then there’s the brand new Simplicity KiwiSaver fund managed by Icehouse Ventures - a fund completely designed to help Kiwi startups accelerate and go global. This means that everyday Kiwis can fuel and benefit from homegrown startup growth rather than external investors who frequently require Kiwi startups to relocate to wherever the fund is. This means NZ loses out on the upside of their success including the creation of new jobs and innovation. Later this month, the official opening ceremony of Christchurch’s Te Ōhaka Centre for Growth and Innovation hosts Mark Bregman, a prominent California based venture capitalist. Mark is currently raising a $40m fund for NZ tech startups and his interest seems to herald a wave of global interest in our country’s startup and innovation landscape.

esults for the Christchurch City Council’s Life in Christchurch survey are out for 2019 and nearly two thirds of respondents say they feel positively about our central city. This is good news and probably in-line with expectations given the progress we have seen over the past 12 months. Hospitality tenancies on The Terrace are performing exceptionally well and The Crossing’s retail offering is equally popular. The EntX cinema complex is proving to be a significant drawcard along too with the two major completed council projects, the Central Library (Tūranga) and Town Hall. The final piece of the retail precinct is just around the corner with the Riverside Market set to open this spring – something I am very much looking forward to. Understandably 93 percent of respondents feel the central city provides a range of restaurants, bars and cafés; 70 percent feel it is safe for pedestrians; 76 percent of respondents would consider living in central city terraced housing compared to 65 percent in low-rise apartments. The trends are often more interesting than the numbers themselves and encouragingly, whilst only 20 percent travel to the central city 2-4 times per week, this is up from 13 percent the year prior. The importance of expediting the remaining anchor projects cannot be underestimated nor can incentives for increasing inner city residential developments and residents, which is key. There are certainly some encouraging signs but it is clear we are going to have to step up and do things differently if we are to be anywhere near satisfied when we see the 2020 survey results.

‘B

uilding places for people’ is Ōtākaro’s mantra and through this mild autumn it’s been satisfying seeing locals and visitors alike enjoying the public spaces we have created. We have been especially heartened by the public response to the new City Promenade, our conversion of two kilometres of Oxford Terrace from a conventional street into a shared space, primarily for pedestrians, cyclists and the ubiquitous scooters. The Promenade really accentuates the river waterfront as a key feature of central Christchurch. A nurse at Christchurch Hospital at the western end of the Promenade told us how much she enjoys her stroll to and from work along the Promenade and the owner of a local backpackers says he gives his guests directions to many city attractions like the Botanic Gardens, Art Gallery or Antigua Boatsheds in relation to the Promenade. It was great to see the Promenade used as an event space during ChristchurchNZ’s wonderful Lantern Festival. We now have a large events area that links Cashel Mall with the ever-popular Victoria Square, which we restored earlier last year. In the East Frame, we are also seeing more people in Rauora Park, particularly cyclists and pedestrians using it as a thoroughfare, and new businesses and other amenities are helping to create activation around the lanes and gathering spaces in the South Frame. There is still much work for us to do to complete the Crown-led anchor projects and we are very proud of our contribution to creating a vibrant CBD for the people of Christchurch.

S

ince submitting the draft Regeneration Plan for the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor for consideration by the Minister for Greater Christchurch Regeneration, Regenerate Christchurch has provided advice to the Crown and Christchurch City Council on leadership and governance of the area. We have recommended that an independent charitable trust be established to provide strong governance and independence from central and local government, while allowing local community input and influence, to support confidence and certainty in the future of the area. The trust would be a single point of contact for private sectors and community interests. But to be successful, it would require a clear mandate established through empowering legislation and a skillsbased board that would consider how best to engage and include local community leadership, iwi and local institutions. We have also recommended that ownership of land in the regeneration area belonging to the Crown and Council be transferred to the independent charitable trust. There are examples where regeneration projects have benefitted from special, collaborative governance arrangements - particularly where this is backed by bespoke legislation. A local postearthquake example is the Arts Centre of Christchurch Trust Act 2015. Legislation also sets aside Hagley Park as a public reserve. Conversations between the Crown and Council about leadership and governance of the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor are already underway. But a real sense of momentum is required to ensure current proposals and expressions of interest in the area do not become lost opportunities.

MAKING GOOD CITIES GREAT

NZPI Chief Executive David Curtis applauds a recent PWC report on ‘Competitive Cities’, describing the collection of data about city competitiveness as integral to making good cities great. “Functional cities and towns create great spaces for people to live, work and play, celebrate their culture and facilitate engagement with their communities,” Curtis says. “As such, they are an essential element of overall wellbeing in New Zealand. A significant proportion of our population lives in urban areas, so when these are functioning well, that’s good for the whole nation economically and culturally.” Curtis says that the ability of cities to attract and retain residents – their ‘competitiveness’ – is very much influenced by the availability of housing and employment, however other factors are as important to help New Zealand cities compete against, say, Australian cities, for the skilled workers needed to fuel economic growth, innovation and development. “Climate, schooling, the availability of recreational facilities and open spaces, public transport, the physical layout of the urban space, access to cultural facilities, even food and entertainment all influence where people choose to live, and on how well that city and the people in it function – how ‘healthy’ those cities are.”

Impact of Liquefaction You’d be forgiven for not knowing what the word ‘liquefaction’ meant pre-quake. It’s just one of the new vernacular that has emerged in the rebuilding city. Now, visitors to Canterbury Museum’s earthquake exhibition Quake City can play in the city’s coolest sand pit to learn about the science behind the phenomenon of liquefaction.

T

he museum has added a hands-on interactive model to Quake City at 299 Durham Street North that demonstrates how the ground liquefied in parts of Canterbury during the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, burying streets and sinking buildings. Commissioned by the museum especially for Quake

City, the model pumps air into a bed of sand, causing it to shift and liquefy much like the ground did during the earthquakes. Blocks representing buildings sink into the liquefied sand, while lighter plastic balls float to the surface, as happened with some of the city’s buried infrastructure. Visitors can

understand the benefits of building on piles by placing the model buildings and balls on metal poles to stop them sinking into the sand. The model was funded by Tonkin + Taylor. Mike Jacka, Senior Geotechnical Engineer and part of Tonkin + Taylor’s Canterbury Earthquake Recovery team, hopes the

model might teach people how to build a more resilient city. “I think this is a great investment to inform and educate visitors and locals alike, and raise awareness of how we can better plan and build our homes, towns and cities to be resilient to nature’s challenges,” he says.

build COLE PIRIE, WAYNE MARRIOTT, BELLA (DOG), SIENNA PIRIE, PROUDLY DISPLAY THEIR NEW SIGN AT THE CHILDREN’S GRANDMOTHER’S HOUSE

REBUILDING COMMUNITIES The Christchurch rebuild has long been about so much more than the physical rebuild; it’s also about rebuilding communities and that’s perhaps best exemplified by the city’s response to the Christchurch mosque attacks – particularly Wayne Marriott’s response.

M

arriott is in the business of ‘peace building’ – his umbrella term for doing work

to help communities and groups work better together. A qualified mediator and

conflict coach, Wayne recently returned to Christchurch after gaining his master’s degree in conflict transformation from the Eastern Mennonite University, Virginia, covering topics such as cultural difference in religion, terrorism and violent extremism. In the US he noticed the trend for putting up welcoming signs on private fences and frontyards. Now he’s producing welcoming neighbourhood signs for Christchurch,

designed to show respect, create conversations with the neighbours, and show we are celebrating all the cultures that make up the city. “The aim of this type of sign is to embrace multiculturalism by removing the communication barriers,” he says. The A3-sized ‘Welcome your Neighbours’ signs are in traditional Maori colours of red, black and white. The languages of Somali, English and Arabic are represented on one side, and Fijian, Maori and Samoan on the other. Languages will be rotated at a later date when more signs are ordered. They can be secured on a grass verge with metal posts. “This an individual’s opportunity to show tangible respect – it’s both visual and meaningful, even if it just initiates eye contact and a smile from a passer-by. It’s about vocalising acceptance, in an inclusive but diverse society.” He said so far, the signs have prompted attention within neighbourhoods where the first signs have been launched – even if it is to just stop and say hello and remark on the sign. A member of the recently formed national Muslim Advisory Group, Wayne is currently launching the signs at a cost of $30 including GST, with shipping additional. As the signs increase in popularity, he hopes to get the cost down and intends to put any profits back into the business of peace building, “The conversation is as wide as we want it to be,” he says. NEW CENTRAL CITY ACCOMMODATION GriffBuild’s Tony and Nick Griffiths have ticked off another central city development, completing the new Bealey Avenue motels on time and under budget.

T

he new accommodation houses 39 rooms over two storeys and is centrally located next to the Bealey Ale and Steak House. Nick says the project was smooth sailing from start to finish. The eye-catching design, with its architectural clean lines, is an appealing combination of plaster

cladding and cedar exterior. Both Nick and Tony say being able to hand the keys over on time was down to a dedicated team and the reliability of their subcontractors, many who they have worked with for 10 years. The Christchurch brothers have made a name for themselves in the city’s rebuild, having worked on internal fit-outs and project management of Kong Cocktail Bar, Fat Eddie’s, The Bog and Original Sin Restaurant. They established GriffBuild in 2007 and to this day it remains a family-owned and operated business which takes immense pride in quality workmanship and attention to detail. They also specialise in extensions and alterations, working alongside the client to ensure the job is completed to the highest standard. The team at GriffBuild are happy to provide free quotes for any of your building queries, so contact them today at info@griffbuild.co.nz.
