y pancreas is broken. Somewhere along the way I had a virus and, when my immune system has waged war, it’s fought perhaps a little bit too hard, killing not just the virus, but also the cells in my pancreas. Those cells were pretty handy, producing insulin to counteract any carbs I consumed. Without insulin, blood glucose levels skyrocket and your blood quickly turns acidic. Just a few short years ago, the only real management plan for type 1 diabetes was to draw blood from your finger with a needle several times a day, then running it through a small testing metre that would determine your blood glucose levels so you could take action to keep them within range. Keeping them in range traditionally involved a manual injection of insulin, but there was plenty of mathematics that went on behind the scenes to ensure you were taking the right ratio of insulin for your food. Today my insulin is delivered by insulin pump and, while I still need to tell it how many carbs I’m consuming and what my insulin/carb ratio is, it does the hard graft ABC AUDITED itself. A Freestyle Libre blood glucose sensor embedded in my arm reads my blood glucose levels constantly and I scan it with my mobile to get the data. However the latest addition to my gadget collection is a Miaomiao. Attached to my sensor, it automatically transmits the data and sends it to my smart watch. Now all that it requires to check my AUDITED blood glucose levels is to look at my watch! Digital tech gets a bit of a bad rap, but you know what, it does some pretty impressive stuff too.

out & about AMANDA MILLER
A Poignant Portrayal By Melinda Collins
‘Celia’ – it is a short name for a documentary that says so much.
The poignant feature-length film captures the passionate life’s work of beloved social campaigner Celia Lashlie. It is raw; it is powerful; it is poignant; but then it was always going to be that way at the award-winning journalistic hand of Amanda Millar, who wrote, directed and produced.
F
ilmed in February 2015, it has been a labour of love for Millar. The pair had met in 2001 when Millar interviewed Lashlie for a 20-20 story. Captivated by the no-nonsense approach of the first woman to work in a men’s prison in New Zealand, they maintained contact over the years. “She mesmerised me,” Millar says. “She was a bit like a drug – one fix and you just wanted
more. I knew no matter what she would go on to do, it was going to be interesting.” Lashlie’s landmark book He’ll Be OK: Growing Gorgeous Boys into Good Men outlined her conviction that crime, suffering and deaths could be prevented by supporting mothers, a point she lays on the line in the documentary. “We spend millions of dollars on benefits, millions of dollars trying to stop child abuse, millions of dollars
trying to stop family violence and no-one has said ‘turn to the mothers’. “And so that’s my thing: it is only in working with the mothers that we will get to save the lives of these children.” When the Pike River explosion proved a turning point in Millar’s career, she again sought Lashlie out. “After 30 years in current affairs, I didn’t want to go knocking on the door of the homes of dead sons, fathers and brothers. It just felt so violating, so I resigned from current affairs, went off in search of Celia and said ‘I’m here’.” “I made it my mission to work with her again because I believed in her work.” The pair were planning a series of mini-documentaries about social issues for the 2017 election when Lashlie discovered she had terminal pancreatic cancer. The focus instead became capturing Lashlie’s unfinished work, making New Zealand a better country. With 12-18 months life expectancy, Lashlie planned on spending January with her family – the son, daughter and
grandchildren she would be leaving behind – with plans for work on the documentary to commence in February. When February came and Millar couldn’t reach Lashlie whose health had deteriorated rapidly, she mentally shelved the plans. A week later, Lashlie’s daughter Beks Henderson rang and said, ‘get a camera, come ‘round now, mum wants to do an interview’.” Millar and camerawoman Belinda Walshe “hoofed it ‘round there” and got filming. “In retrospect I think she knew it was her last chance to say what she wanted to say.” Two days later Lashlie died. But now, thanks to Millar, her work lives on. “I’m just one of tens of thousands in the world whose lives have been changed by Celia Lashlie,” she says, crediting former Christchurch businessman, Garry Robertson, with getting the documentary across the finish line by funding its completion. “He was my saviour, it was a really gracious and extraordinarily generous gift he gave me. Even though he knew nothing about films, he knew about Celia.” Metropol March 14, 2019 7

Out of all the artists and musicians you have worked with, who has had the biggest impact on your music career? All of them. I’m serious. I have learnt so much from writers, artists and players, that my gratitude is huge. Firstly, I learned that you do not give up - that if you decide to be an artist and musician then you must commit your life to it. Otherwise it isn’t truly, authentically you. This way the art you come up with will have meaning. So collectively, all the artists I’ve worked with have had a huge impact on me. What do you consider are some of your biggest career highlights? Too many to list here, but a few examples: playing in prisons; singing for a dying man and his family; playing for the Hyde Park Memorial in London; playing for the Pike River Families; touring with Th’Dudes & DD Smash; touring with my band now…… the highlights keep coming. What are you most looking forward to on the Bryan Adams concerts? Having supported Bryan before it is an exciting thing to play to his audience again. It’s a big buzz to meet him and his great band. We’ll rise to the occasion very well. I’m proud of my band and we will assuredly rock you. It’ll be grand. Where do you draw your inspiration for songs from and how often do you put pen to paper now? I’m always dreaming and I’ve learnt to explore them as they contain songs and a kind of deep un-knowable advice. So I listen to that in some way which drives the creativity – the need to articulate feelings and mood. It is often when you’re not looking that a song will pounce on you. The work is in finishing the jolly thing.
Out of all your hits, have there been any that surprised you with their success – and why? Yes, I was pleasantly surprised that ‘Welcome Home’ made such a mark. I was thrilled that people responded to the kind of peacefulness that it aspired to. It was Christchurch that inspired that song. It grew into a very useful song that carves its own path now. How does it feel both as a songwriter and as a performer, to have had such an influence over the music of a country, iconic songs that have touched lives? It makes me feel a responsibility. It is an honour to be able to write and perform for an audience that I love in the land we all love. I’m still amazed at the freedom of that reality. If you hadn’t found success as an artist, what do you think you would have done? I think it would be a creative job. Probably making simple things. Two of my brothers are gifted craftsmen and make amazing wooden things with deft accuracy - so maybe I can still learn to make something cool. How does a day in the life of Dave Dobbyn look these days? It begins hopefully at 7:15am. Feed dog and cats, make sure dog doesn’t steal cat food by glaring at him, gently. Once the first cuppa tea has hit the spot and I hear my wife sigh happily with her tea mug at her lips, it’s into the studio for news, NYT crossword, emails and more tea (trying to quit sugar). I’m learning a lot online these days – audio production stuff especially – and political /philosophical stuff. Play guitar and piano. Learn lap steel guitar. Mostly I’m dreaming up music and tinkering with sound. There’s always a new learning curve to take on, so now I’m learning how to use our new mixing console that sounds so darned musical I’m jumping for joy. I have a deep feeling I’ll be producing more music than ever in the next few years. What does the rest of 2019 have in store for you? Looking pretty good. I’ll be releasing new music later in the year so I’m working on that. There are a few surprises coming and some gigs locally and abroad. Keep an eye out for me and I’ll keep an eye on you.

You’ve been said to have written the soundtrack of New Zealand, with some of the country’s biggest hits under your commercial belt, what have been some of your own favourites? Well that’s always a hard one to answer because it’s my job to think of my next song as the favour-ite. For me anyway, that’s what drives me – to come up with a better song. If I didn’t believe in that, then I would just be repeating myself and that’d be fruitless and sad. So at the risk of not answering the question, I can’t have any favourites yet.

Future of
fusion dining The future of Asian and fusion dining has landed here in Christchurch. Dining at two fabulous local restaurants, Commi and Hoi An House, brings a genuine Asian experience to Ōtautahi/Christchurch. With chefs travelling to Christchurch from Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia to bring you the flavours of their home towns, there’s no need for you to get on a plane (but you can park your car on site).
A
t Commi and Hoi An House, both traditional and more adventurous authentic Asian taste sensations are prepared under fully compliant and sustainable business practices. Whether you are in search of a special night out or a casual weekend treat, these two venues will delight. Hoi An House in Halswell is celebrating its first year in business and catering to its expanding fan-base by adding a range of Thai favourites to its much-loved Vietnamese menu. There is now also a menu specific to lunch dining from Thursday to Sunday, and both the lunch and dinner options are available to take away. Sited on Halswell Road, Hoi An House is a gracious and historic landmark. The full service and fine dining interior is complemented by the garden terrace, plus there is a function room that can seat up to 80 people, which can also be split into more intimate spaces. Hoi An’s oncetried never-forgotten signature dish is the Vietnamese pancake with fresh
herbs, salad, pork and prawns. Commi is located on the corner of Colombo and Somerfield Streets in Beckenham. Operating for six months, this little gem is a street food mecca where families and locals enjoy Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Indian and Malaysian dishes in a casual and cosy environment. There are shared plates with every dish under $20 and a children’s menu and colouring in to keep the little ones happy, plus you can just walk in – no bookings needed. Quality of ingredients is key for both restaurants with the crème of local vegetables combined with the very best of imported items such as bamboo shoots, baby corn, and water chestnuts, to keep dishes authentic. The soy and oyster sauces used are gluten free, and most dishes can be made vegetarian with notice to the chef. So proud of their ingredients and approach to preparation are these two restaurants, that you can learn for yourself the exact techniques and ingredients at the Asian Garden Cooking School.

Journey Icon The

The Christchurch Town Hall rebuild has been a journey of epic proportions and Sir Bob Parker has been there from the beginning. We caught up him about their shared journey together.
12 March 14, 2019 Metropol
You mentioned you have a long personal history with this building, how so? I remember the time when the Town Hall was only an idea; a sketch. I was a teenager and my parents were behind the community fundraising efforts to build the hall. People could buy bricks and that money was donated to the build fund. It was the community who fundraised the beautiful Reiger organ which graces the hall.
The Town Hall has gained an international reputation, why do you think that is? Yes, it has. It has become referred to as one of the top five auditoriums in the world for its acoustics which were created by Sir Harold Marshall, who has become known around the world for designing auditoriums with the best results. Artists who perform there rave about the acoustics. With the halls reopening, we are so pleased that the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra will now have a place to call home where they can practice and perform. A quick story is that I was passing through Christchurch Airport and a gentleman introduced himself. It was Harold Marshall. He was on his way to Paris to discuss the acoustics for a new building they were designing and that was because of the reviews of the acoustics in the Town Hall. Was it always the plan to save the Town Hall? During my time as Mayor, my councillors and I approved the steps to save the hall. When I left office, as with any council transition, others had different ideas and goals. The Town Hall was re-evaluated and questioned whether to save it or not. Thankfully the new council recognised that we’d made the correct decision, changed their minds, reaffirmed our call, and the refurbish journey began. It was a collective effort of so many and I personally am so appreciative of the outcome. The Town Hall is a Christchurch icon.

The Town Hall has recently reopened after being severely damaged in the February 2011 earthquake. You were the Mayor at the time and started the steps to save the historical building. Why was there so much, not only council effort, but community effort to refurbish this structure? From the time it opened in 1972, with the design by Sir Miles Warren and Maurice Mahoney, the community has felt a sense of pride and accomplishment. It was and is again today a beautiful location to enjoy a performance of any kind. Just about everyone around Canterbury and beyond have a memory around a time they have attended or visited the Town Hall. From the beginning this hall was a building for the people and it has been referred to as the ‘cathedral for the people’. The designers, Sir Miles Warren and Maurice Mahoney, developed a showcase piece of architecture, which provides a thread for our community.

What are you most looking forward to about the Fashion Show in April? We don’t often get to do events outside of where we are based. Our head office and retail stores are in Auckland, so it’s amazing to have an opportunity to connect with customers and stockists throughout the country. It’s a really well run event; I’ve worked with Maree from M Factor Events before and she makes it easy for us to be involved because she’s such a professional.
We’re due to have a baby very soon, so I won’t be able to personally attend, but I’ll be there in spirit. It’s great to be able to share our collections on the catwalk and see our products come to life. You released your Autumn/Winter footwear range last month, can you tell us a bit more about that and where you drew your inspiration from? The winter collection is a return to the ‘90s, with pointed toes; red and black and white; textured and printed leathers. They’re bold and make the wearer feel super confident and like she can take on the world, whether they’re in the boardroom or at home with two toddlers. What other exciting things can we expect from the brand this year? We’ve got Fashion Week in August and our annual Queenstown show, which is in its eighth year in August. Lola is four now, so she’s going to school soon and we have our new one on the horizon for the family, so it will be challenging times ahead. Timed in with the arrival of our new baby, we have Baby Wilsons on the cards – a collection of toddler and baby shoes. We’re also moving head office with new space for the team and we’re looking at retail opportunities outside of Auckland, which is all part of our expansion plans for the next five years.

What attracted you to become involved with Ronald McDonald House? It’s a cause that is important to me. I remember hearing first-hand about what they’re dealing with in terms of lack of funding and thought ‘how can we help?’ I’ve been an ambassador for Ronald McDonald House Charities for six years, so we align our brand with the house with several events throughout the year. We support the house with proceeds from our public ticketed shows and our head office team recently did a cooking evening for some of the families staying there. For anyone who hasn’t visited the houses before, it’s quite neat to know you’re always welcome to cook or volunteer there. It was so awesome for our team to see, not just the kids staying in Starship, but the impact for their siblings as well that are living away from their homes. Once I heard there was the catwalk show, it was an easy decision. I had to be involved.

hen someone who has the flu sneezes, coughs or even talks, the flu virus is expelled into the air and may be inhaled by anyone close by. How can you protect yourself and your work environment from the consequences of the flu? By having a flu vaccination, of course. TriEx, a Gallagher Bassett Company, begins its
programme of workplace vaccinations in both Christchurch and Auckland in late March. The team knows only too well how this disease can impact the efficiency and profitably of businesses and they encourage employers to join the programme. The businesses will benefit because of less downtime with sick staff and the employees’ likelihood of contracting the flu will be reduced. TriEx’s experienced nurses visit workplaces to carry out the vaccinations. The company can also provide vouchers nationally for ease and flexibility for those staff not available on vaccination day. These vouchers can be redeemed at vaccinating Unichem or Life Pharmacies. There are also information packs to share with employees to help promote the flu programme. To secure your preferred date and time book early on 0800 FLU JAB (0800 358 522) or email flu@triex.co.nz. You can also find out more about TriEx’s flu vaccination scheme on www.theflu.co.nz.

OPEN DAY & SMC BOARDERS’ SLEEPOVER
A BROODING GOOD SHOW By Sarah Jarvis
Georgia and Caleb Nott, the siblings who make music together as Broods, are coming to Christchurch on March 22 with their ‘Don’t Feed the Pop Monster’ tour. We caught up with LA based Georgia ahead of the tour about what 2019 has in store. Do you miss living in New Zealand? When was the last time you were home? We come home a lot actually. We spend every Christmas at home with the family. We have the best of both worlds really. LA is amazing and there are so many opportunities and inspiring people here. But, we also get to come home and recharge whenever it gets hectic. What does 2019 hold for Broods? A lot of touring! Hoping that we’ll get some time here and there to keep the writing going but for the most part we’ll just be touring this album.
What can Christchurch fans expect from the Don’t Feed the Pop Monster tour? This is the first time we’ve wanted to play every song on the album live. It’s gonna be a very special one to tour. This album has taken up so much space in our lives and to share it with fans in person is going to be some special sh**. What advice do you have for other New Zealand musicians hoping to make it in the industry? You really just have to get out there and do it in any shape or form you can. Say yes to collaborating and show people who you are through your music. What one Kiwi thing do you miss the most living in America? The fam! Thank god for FaceTime. What would you like remembered about you? I think it’s safe to say my music haha! I get less and less obsessed with the idea of being remembered though. I think whatever we make has to be authentic otherwise what you leave behind isn’t really you. So I’d like to be remembered for the music that I make when I am most authentic I guess.

t is the task of the Property Manager to balance this sometimes tricky equation. Brent Manderson and Steve Hawker are some of the best in the business. Between them they have extensive backgrounds and experience in property investment and management. Last year, they purchased Rentworks Property Management and are working to build those relationships that are vital to the wellbeing of both landlords and tenants. “We’re six months in,” Steve says. “We’re settling into the business. We’ve met a lot of the owners and tenants, and plan to meet the rest. That’s a particular focus for us. We want to make sure we’re accessible to all our clients.” The property managers at Rentworks spend their days working hard to keep their clients, both owners and tenants, happy. With vacancy levels and rent arrears well below the industry average, and with more and more properties being put on the books, their days are full. Whether it’s dealing with maintenance, conducting regular property inspections, negotiating market rents with landlords and tenants, or simply dealing with the day to day issues that inevitably pop up, Brent, Steve and their team are always focused on fair outcomes for all involved. As Brent says, “We deal with these matters so our owners don’t have to; we take the worry away”. One of the key benefits of engaging a property manager is that they make it their business to keep up with the forever, and often fast, changing legislation relating to investment and tenancy. Keeping owners and tenants in that loop is a task Steve and Brent take very seriously. Whether it’s rules around letting fees, the evolving Healthy Homes legislation, or the looming insulation compliance deadline, Rentworks’ priority is making sure all their properties are up to scratch. “An example of this is that we hired someone to focus solely on insulation so come July 1st we are 100 percent compliant across our portfolio,” Brent says. The Christchurch rental market is everchanging and markedly different to the rest of the country. Currently, Brent says the local market is showing signs of recovery and for the first time in several years there are multiple enquiries and applications for certain properties. More people are renting now than 30 years ago and the abolition of tenant letting fees has led to a lot more tenant movement in the market. Tenants’ expectations are also rising and, coupled with the push for healthier homes, the overall quality of housing stock is steadily improving. Given this complex environment, the expertise, experience and resources of a quality Property Manager is vital. With a highly competitive fees structure, free rental assessments for property owners, the latest technologies and processes, and a finger on the pulse of the Christchurch rental market, Brent, Steve and the team at Rentworks should be who owners and tenants first call.

BRINGING ROCK TO TOWNS Imagine a world where everyone wears the same clothes, watches the same movies and thinks the same thoughts, where individuality is extinct and live music is banned under the control of an all-powerful global company and its tyrannical boss.

n this futuristic comedy by Ben Elton, more than 24 of Queen’s biggest hits have been reimagined; wrapped into the story of an incredible dystopian world that is as unique as the music from which it was based. Successful West End shows like We Will Rock You (WWRY), complete national and international tours before the rights to stage them are given to community theatre companies. Showbiz Christchurch is the first
to receive these for New Zealand, with the organisation then responsible for envisioning a whole new production. It ensures what you see on a local level is special, with alterations made right down to minute detailing on the costumes and sets which were designed in the UK especially for WWRY. The set, props and costumes came to Showbiz late last year from Queen
Theatrical, the owners of the musical. The set was made by award-winning set builder Stufish Entertainment Architects, which is known internationally for creating the ‘Rolls Royce’ of sets, while the costumes were created by BAFTA and Olivier awards-winning costume designer Tim Goodchild. Despite a prestigious career designing for stage, TV and film, including more than

60 West End productions, WWRY was a singular task. Goodchild joined the original London production team just six months before the May 2002 opening and turned his talented hand to creating more than 150 costumes – a task which can be likened to designing and making an entire couture collection. While he took to the mammoth task with his usual attention to detail, which includes extensive research, WWRY required something ‘next-level’. The creative endeavour included visiting photographic libraries and antique shops for old magazines to get inspiration for the costuming, which meant Adam Ant, Ziggy Stardust, Kiss, Boy George, Skyhooks, ACDC all played a part. The finished product is a recreation of the entire spectrum of rock. Not just the Queen period, Goodchild has captured Bay City Rollers and Vivienne Westwood and Boy George within the ornate and exceptional quality costuming. His costume ‘bibles’ - all bursting with sketches, notes, photos and material samples that chart the progress of the costumes from idea to stage - are now splayed across the tables in the Showbiz Christchurch wardrobe department, amid the fusion of tartan, torn tights and distressed denim. There are several of these bibles and the Showbiz Christchurch team were blown away by the extensive and detailed notes that came with the costuming, that too was exceptional quality and detailed. Multiple sizes of key costumes – such as one of the 8kg Killer Queen costumes – have been created for the diverse range of performers to play the roles, during the musical’s global journey. Throughout the world, legions of devoted audiences have turned WWRY into a global success and, since 2002, more than 16 million theatregoers in 28 countries have rocked out to this unique musical. Make sure you get your tickets so that like the Bohemians, you too can embark on the search to find the unlimited power and freedom of rock music! Book online at www.showbiz.org.nz/wwry or 0800TICKETEK (0800 842 538).

Get rid of
unwanted bulges! Most women would say they have a stubborn little pocket of fat that no diet or extreme exercise plan can budge. Whether it’s inner-thigh thickness, bingo wings, double chin or a postpregnancy muffin top – whatever its form, it’s usually downright impossible to shift. Well, until now!
R
ecent figures out of America reveal that fat freezing, a non-invasive alternative to liposuction, is now the third most popular non-surgical procedure, coming in behind dermal fillers and Botox. The procedure has seen a 24.7 percent rise in one year, partly because there are no needles, incision or downtime. You can freeze your fat in your lunch hour. Fat freezing, scientifically known as cryolipolysis, isn’t new; it was first approved by the FDA in 2010. The Skin Rejuvenation Clinic welcomed a new fat-freezing machine in November and is already struggling to keep up with the demand of clients wanting to get
their fat ice-blasted off at $600 an area. “The technology is incredible. You chill the problem area down to -8 degrees and the fat cells die and disappear,” explains Dr Brigid. “It’s not painful and clients can read a book or do some work on the laptop while the fat is being frozen away and then head back to the office.” There’s a 30 percent reduction to fat in the area that is treated. Those fat cells are gone – that means it’s harder to put the weight back on in that area. The magical machine is ‘Cooltech’ and it’s set to revolutionise fat-freezing, enabling women to speedily contour their body shape without going under the knife.

Originally part of both the male and female ensemble, skirts of all lengths, patterns and prints now help to define the form of fashion and create wardrobe continuity throughout every season.
B
roomstick, flare, mini, pleated, maxi, A-Line and tutus are just a few of the stylishy defined variations offered up by the sartorial skirt. Skirts are one of the oldest garments known to mankind, defined in its simplest form as a single piece of fabric that is draped from the waist. Historically both men and women have donned skirts due to their simplicity and comfort in design. Dating back to 3,000 BC, Sumerian artifacts harken an era when skirts or kaunakes (a sheep fur skirt tied to a belt) as they were then regionally known, were worn by men to show their religious devotion. In the Middle Ages as men engaged in more rigorous activities such as horse riding, the skirt began to take a shorter form before technological tailoring advancements turned the tides towards trousers and tights. Soon skirts became the standard for women only, with slips, petticoats and long trains being introduced as skilled seamstresses helped to accentuate and redefine the fashion staple. In the late 60s, Mod fashion designer Dame Barbara Mary Quant was noted for the revival of the skirt, when she coined the term ‘mini’ after her favourite car the Mini Cooper. Soon exposing a bit of leg became a sexy and liberating move away from the previous decade, when more modest attire for women prevailed. Today the fashion savvy are able to
take their pick of the pile when it comes to skirt shopping with a seemingly endless amount of choices for both style and comfort. Even brides are going for the shorter, skirt-esque dresses as an alternative to the more traditional options for the big day. John Paul Gaultier introduced skirts into his men’s collections to challenge the social codes and introduce a bit of novelty into the fashion world and he notably had David Beckham very famously rocking a couture sarong. This male tradition is still alive and well with the izaar skirt worn by men in the Muslim culture and who can forget the everpopular kilt for the Scottish, Irish and English gents. It is the playful wardrobe staple that transcends the seasons with its pairability with tights or stockings and finished off with any footwear from flats and boots to stilettos and jandals. Skirt versatility also lends itself to mystery as front panel pieces are often used as a facade for shorts, leggings and even bathing suits. Remember skorts? Long and lean versions of the skirt have historically been seen as dowdy but designers like Marc Jacobs and Paco Rabonne are redefining the elongated silhouette with hippy-chic appeal to fit the ever-changing world of fashion. There is no skirting the issue here as the options for both men and women are obviously endless.

MIND OVER MATTER
Just as you know you have to train the body if you want to be fitter, more toned, or lose weight, the same principal applies if you want your life to be different in any way. If you want to be calmer, more fulfilled and more successful, you have to train the mind.
L
ife Coach, mother and former UK gym owner/ operator Amanda Walmsley of Inspired Services
is thrilled to introduce her gym for the mind. A first for Christchurch, it’s affordable, fits with every schedule and is
based online, so you can work on improving your life anytime and anywhere. Amanda explains that our thoughts and our emotional reaction to them together drive how we act in life, which impacts the outcomes we get. “If we don’t have control over our minds, the mind can control us, and even lead to anxiety and depression,” she says. “People fail to reach their goals if they are not mentally and emotionally fit, and achieving this is not really taught in schools. You want to be in a position where you are getting better at life every day; navigating your way through rather than fumbling along. To do this you really need to be strengthening your mental ability, improving your emotional intelligence and working with Universal Law.” Traditional coaching can be expensive so not accessible to everyone and Amanda is passionate about changing this, bringing transformative life skills to the mainstream and giving everyone the knowledge, tools and opportunity to change their lives. It also reduces the amount of material required and is a rather more pleasant experience for patients. “As 3D printer techology becomes more accessible, the cost of use is also going down. I have been waiting for an all-in-one system that covers virtually the whole process and that is now available from a company called Kulzer. My patients can look forward to 3D printed dentures when I introduce the technique over the next few months. Mary has osteoporosis and the treatment for this means she has to be very careful not to get dental infections. Mary’s biggest fear is getting dementia or Alzheimer’s disease like her parents. Research shows links between these sad illnesses and gum disease. Other conditions impacted are cardiac disease, diabetes and strokes which become more common as we age. Mary and Bill are now locked into regular hygienist visits. Mary was devastated recently when her granddaughter asked why she had yellow teeth. Relieving symptoms of menopause Issues associated with Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM) are not easy for women to discuss but Oxford Women’s Health is delighted to say that several of its patients, who have received the MonaLisa Touch treatment, have been more than happy to share their results.
Lisa*, who is a local doctor, tells her story below:
I
decided to try MonaLisa Touch after attending a presentation by (Oxford Women’s Health)
gynaecologist Olivia Smart. GSM meant I had been experiencing quite a lot of discomfort during sex. I’m
only in my mid 50s but it’s ten years since I went through menopause. The problem with GSM is that it can get worse as time goes by. I had been using an oestrogen cream but it wasn’t sufficient. I had also looked up laser treatments online but thought they were only available in the North Island. I was really pleased to find Oxford Women’s Health was offering MonaLisa Touch in Christchurch. After the presentation, I booked an appointment with Olivia for an assessment to see if I was a suitable candidate for the treatment. I then came back for the first of three sessions. The staff were really good and made the whole experience seem very easy. After an anaesthetic had been applied and the laser inserted, the treatment took about five to ten minutes. There was no pain just a slightly uncomfortable feeling in some areas. After the first treatment,
the area felt hot for a couple of hours and there was some slight bleeding. After both the second and third treatments there was only a small amount of bleeding. I also kept using an oestrogen cream, as I know a combination of the cream and laser treatment is supposed to work best. At the end of the day, I am very pleased to report that it has all worked and sex is much more pleasurable for me again. In my job, I regularly meet women who are having issues like mine and I am now able to confidently say that it is an effective treatment. I am now recommending it to anyone that I think could benefit from it. For more information on how you can access the MonaLisa Touch treatment or discuss whether this is suitable for you, visit the Oxford Women’s Health website at www. oxfordwomenshealth.co.nz. *To protect the patient’s privacy, we have used a different name

HELPING YOU HEAR
Samantha Foster, co-owner and General Manager of Hear Again says that in helping adults of all ages with their hearing, it is usually family members who first notice hearing loss in a loved one and urge them to have their hearing checked. “Clients often come to Hear Again saying ‘I’m fine, everyone just mumbles in my family’,” says Samantha “and then are amazed at the difference we can make”.
T
echnological advances mean it is now possible to have rechargeable hearing aids. “You charge the hearing aids up overnight, rather than changing batteries, which can be small and fiddly,” Samantha says. “Rechargeable aids are slightly pricier than the disposable battery hearing aids, but if dexterity or poor eyesight make coping with the traditional batteries difficult, then the rechargeable hearing aids are a real advantage.” Rechargeable hearing aids bring the confidence that the aids will last a whole day and won’t leave you high and dry in a meeting. The hearing aids are simply charged overnight like a phone and then provide over 24 hours of continuous use. “We really recommend patients opt for the rechargeable hearing aids if they can afford the little extra cost,” Samantha says. “Technology that connects hearing aids to an iPhone has been around for a while now, but it’s still not widely known,” she adds. “This type of hearing aid allows you to use your cellphone like a remote control; you can send the phone conversation audio straight to your hearing aid and you can always hear your phone ring if you are within 10 metres. The same technology can also be used to send the sound from your TV straight to the hearing aids, even if the volume is turned down or off for others in the family.” If you suspect your hearing is impaired, the team offers free hearing screening for over-18s. They provide full diagnostic testing, or you can bring in the results of a hearing test you have had within the last six months and the Hear Again team can offer a second opinion. If hearing aids are indicated, a full needs assessment examines every aspect of your life and what you need your instruments to do. Your existing aids can be cleaned and checked, and ear wax removal is available for teens and up. If hearing damage has occurred in your workplace or from military service, Hear Again can assess whether you are eligible to make an ACC or Veterans’ Affairs claim and help with that process. “Most New Zealanders are eligible for a government subsidy of $1022.22 for a pair of hearing aids and we can help you gain this,” Samantha says. Hear Again has ensured it is easily accessible, with opening hours Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm. Located at The Hub in Hornby, patients come from all around Canterbury because they don’t have to travel to the central city and there is parking right at the door.

Living the dream As the growth of mid-Canterbury’s picturesque Lake Hood development continues, the latest extensions will see a further 39 premium lakeside sections added. Eventually, Lake Hood will double its current size, covering 160 hectares.
O
ffering affordable lakeside living, minutes from Ashburton, residents are ‘living the dream’ in a close community with the lake right on their doorstep – from young families to empty nesters and retirees. The new road layout and newly installed roundabout leads directly to Lake Hood’s central hub, providing an easier route to the water. “There’s major expansion and improvement happening all the time,” says Gary Casey, Project Director for the Lake Hood Development Board. Open days are planned for this year and Gary is keen to chat to anyone looking for a section to build on, who has ever dreamed of lakeside living.
“The lifestyle here sells itself. Where else can you buy an affordable section with your very own jetty? There’s every water activity here that you can imagine – boating, rowing, sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, skiing, swimming and fishing. There are also great walking tracks and cycleways, a tennis court, a golf course, and a well-used kids’ playground that includes a bike pump track – it’s a great place for kids to grow up, and bigger kids to settle at. “It’s a place for creating family memories.” To enquire about sections at Lake Hood, contact Gary on 027 227 5776 and he can put you in touch with your preferred real estate agent.

Cuisine S
The Italian Job Tracey Edwardes
The herbs, veges and flavours of Italy are having a big impact on our culinary cravings this year, but we’re not complaining! In fact, buon appetito! Italian food marries Mediterranean cuisine, creating traditional combinations of quintessential flavour.
un-ripened Roma tomatoes lie naked with torn basil leaves or oregano and a generous drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. And our local artisan olive oils are just ‘perfecto’. Moreish white cheeses, such as goats cheese, plumps the typical Italian salad into mouth-filling proportions. The likes of artichokes, eggplants, cannelloni beans, peppers, chillies and olives are all nourishing flavour bombs for salads, soups and pastas. Italian herbs will Latinise any dish, from pizzas to casseroles – use flatleafed Italian parsley, oregano, rosemary and sage. Pasta’s duty is to enrobe and soak up the sauce. Cook it ‘al dente’ – slightly firm to the bite – otherwise it’s a soggy rendition. Wild mushrooms, such as porcini, beguile fungi fans in a decadent autumnal feast. It’s very Italian to include ground walnuts, olive oil, garlic, wine, cream, parmesan with this pasta or risotto dish. Our locally made Limoncello liqueur is a zingy winner borrowed from Southern Italy and gelaterias are popping up on street corners for icy creaminess. Try an affogato – vanilla ice-cream in a glass, with steamy espresso poured over. Italians just have that way of making comfort food exciting.

Peruvian Perfection
A time to spend with friends
By Tracey Edwardes
You’re likely familiar with Brazilian cuisine and, by year’s end, many foodies will be hooked on the fare of Brazil’s culinary neighbour – Peru, as Peruvian cuisine hits the consumer consciousness.
N
either overtly spicy nor safely bland, feasting Peruvian style uses a diverse menu of common ingredients transformed by rich flavours from rich soils and culture. A typical Peruvian dish is Pollo a la Brasa, a flavoursome seasoned rotisserie chicken in a charcoal-fired oven. A traditional Chinese-Peruvian fusion is Lomo Saltado – sautéed onions, tomatoes and beef, enhanced with a splash of wine. Papas a la Huancaina laces potatoes in a spicy cheese sauce, and Rocoto Relleno presents stuffed peppers. Aji de Galina is spicy creamy chicken – Aji being the native chilli pepper – around 50 are used in Peruvian cuisine. While Peru is synonymous with rainforests and mountains, the coastal areas are responsible for perhaps its

othing celebrates making it to the weekend more than Brunch. A time to spend with friends and family without the pressure of having to be anywhere. The Rowdy Kitchen is relatively new to the Christchurch Gastronomic scene, however few venues offer the complete brunch package as they do. This stunning venue has sliding doors and windows, light wooden panelling, living walls along with a mid-century theme and furnishings to create private intimate spaces within a large venue. Boasting a massive deck with views over the surrounding wetlands. Louvers and motorised screens mean the
most famous dish – ceviche, a decadent seafood morsel often an appetiser on our menus. This traditional treat is a fusion of cubed fresh fish which ‘cooks’ in its acidic piquant marinade of lime, onions, chilli peppers and cilantro (coriander). Also, raw fish, sashimi style, as in Tiradito Chifa, hails from Peru’s historical Japanese influence. And Chupe de Camarones is a succulent shrimp chowder. Tomatoes, corn and surprisingly the humble potato – Peru has around 4,000 varieties – originated from this part of the world’s fertile land. Peru introduced us to the protein-packed grain staple, quinoa and the superfood powdered-root vegetable, maca, now revving up our smoothies. Devour these South American delights.
weather is never a disruption. Kitchen Manager, Tony Smith leads a passionate kitchen team known for quality food produced from their open kitchen. The first Christchurch venue to introduce “Bottomless Brunch” whereby guests will enjoy a two hour beverage package with their meal including Prosecco, Mimosa, and Simple Squeezed juices. The menu offers great options for those weekend catch ups and those looking for more than just great food. 250 free car parks complete this must visit venue in Christchurch’s north. https://www.facebook.com/ RowdyKitchenBarandEatery/ or call 383 4084 for more information

The global frosé craze has hit the city and we think this is the coolest news we’ve heard all year. A match made in heaven, frozen rosé is a grown-up, alcoholic slushie.
Add wine, lemon juice and sugar into a blender and blend until smooth.
2. Freeze the mixture for 6 hours – the alcohol will prevent it from becoming solid ice
3.
Serve in a glass with mint to garnish.

For the banana bread: 1½ cups almond meal 1/3 cup ground psyllium husk 2 tsp baking powder ½ tsp salt 3 eggs ½ cup cream 1 banana 2 tbsp pumpkin seeds 2 tbsp sunflower seeds 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp vanilla extract
Who doesn’t love banana bread? Not only is this recipe super-easy, but it also always impresses and is a great way to use up any bananas that might have passed their best.

Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 30 minutes
1.
Pre-heat the oven to 160°C fan (180°C regular).
2.
Line a loaf tin with nonstick baking paper, or use a non-stick silicone mould (be aware that silicone doesn’t transfer heat as well as metal so you may need to cook your bread a little longer).
3.
Place all the banana bread ingredients in a food processor and blend until smooth. Pour into the loaf tin, scatter over the seeds or nuts and bake for 28–30 minutes.
4.
Insert a skewer into the centre of the loaf and make sure it comes out clean. If the bread seems a little undercooked, bake for another five minutes before testing again.

Dining with a difference Step inside Ivory Bar and it’s like stepping back in time, back to the days when art deco was the new chic.

ust 30 minutes from Christchurch, on Ivory Street in Rangiora, the former Northern A & P Society Building, first opened in 1926 and now listed as a heritage building, has recently been lovingly restored to an opulent, even decadent, 1920s styled restaurant and bar. The Beulink family has owned the building for 16 years. “It was more or less abandoned,” says Robert Beulink. “However, we fell in love with the building and recognised its significance and its potential.”
After three years of planning and restoration, that potential is finally being realised. Ivory Bar’s sensational European tapas and shared plate cuisine are specialties for lunch and dinner, with lunch available from 11:30am. Ivory is open every day ‘til late. The class and distinction of this establishment is obvious, from the pillared exterior to the spectacular interior, and tidy attire is both expected and appreciated. elebrating the best New Zealand has to offer, the philosophy of the restaurant encourages people to come together and connect over good, hearty, wholesome food. The delectable menu features fusion treats, such as, Pork’n’Watercress Croquettes, Rēwena Reuben Sandwiches, Hangi-style Kumara Bites, Cheesecake with Manuka Honeycomb, and Nan’s Steamed Pudding.
With Instagram-worthy presentation, the chefs include the finest details in every dish, with flourishing touches of Kawakawa syrup, watercress pesto, and toasted Rēwena Sourdough. Adopting a paddock-to-plate approach, the menu is divided into sections covering Te Pāmu (The Farm), Te Māra (The Garden), Te Kāinga (The Home), Te Moana (The Sea), and a full menu for the Tamariki. Conveniently located at 31 Victoria St, Lu Lu’s Bar and Eatery is quickly becoming a hot spot for tourists wanting to experience Kiwi food with a twist, as well as a relaxing place for locals to enjoy an evening out. It is also a popular hub for sports fans, with screens offering coverage of the English Premier League, and all major European football matches. The mixture should be dough-like in consistency – if it’s looking a little crumbly, simply add some more almond meal until it holds together. I cook 99.9 percent of everything myself and, when I’m not cooking, I’m inventing new pie concoctions.” Speaking of pies, Delwyn has recently introduced her latest flavours – the cream paua pie (the paua is sourced from the Chatham Islands)
– to the bakery. “It’s proving just as popular as my other pies, such as the kangaroo, garlic and tomato pie; the steak, onion and blue cheese pie; and the creamy scallop pie.” The bakery and café’s take-away cabinet is full of Delwyn’s delectable baking, featuring muffins, scones, rolls and sandwiches, plus family favourites such as chocolate peppermint slice, cinnamon

Gold Rush By Tracey Edwardes
Gold is adding its illustrious touch to our homewares this season. This magical metallic in its purest golden form will now out-shine recent trends of copper and bronze.
G
old pairs beautifully with silver – a perfect balancing act that is easy on the eye. It doesn’t have to be all matching chrome in kitchens or bathrooms. The two opposing metals work really well, as does gold and black. Antiqued-gold and black furniture is now contemporary glamour. The minimalism trend of Scandinavian style and neutral colour schemes are
making way for décor of the dramatic kind. Think large gold-framed prints, glamorous gold mirrors or lamps, and adding gleam from table cloths and trinkets to ottomans and cushions. Gold is a winning combination when paired with the latest jewelled fabrics and interesting textures. The secret is to sprinkle the Midas touch sparingly throughout the house – rather
than grouping the whole stash – unless it is a cabinet of gilded wine glasses. This especially goes for brass pieces – think classy, not brassy. Position away from the glaring sunlight however, you can afford to be a little more brazen if there is a dark space to brighten. Paint with a gold shimmer can be used creatively for walls and cornices to cupboards and knobs.

Autumn:
nature’s planting time
With the first signs of snow on the mountains and a distinct freshness to the air at night; it reminds us that autumn is upon us. There are several landscaping jobs to consider when getting your property ready for autumn and beyond.
1.
2.
3.
Get planting Did you know autumn is known as nature’s planting time? It is one of the best seasons to plant a garden, as it gives plants a chance to set their roots for spring growth and because soil is naturally cool and retains water. Turn down the irrigation With rainfall increasing, the length of time you need to have your irrigation on decreases. Check timers and reprogramme where needed. Check spray heads and fix any leaks that have become apparent over summer. Build a raised vegetable bed Apart from being an excellent addition to your overall landscape design, there are many reasons to build a raised
6.
Pruning Pruning your stone fruit should be a priority in autumn and should be done as soon as harvesting is complete. Hedges and most shrubs will also appreciate a prune before winter. Not sure where to start with pruning? Contact us – our maintenance team is here to help. Spraying It’s important to have a year-round spray programme and autumn is an ideal time to start. After the stress of dry conditions, your plants will be more susceptible to insects, including thrips and mites. Don’t forget about the lawn; weather conditions will also see an increase in red thread and hydrocotyle. Lay paving or paths Now is a great time to consider any of those annoying areas that get boggy and unusable in the rainy months. Adding a path or section of paving can be an excellent way to complete an otherwise nonfunctioning area, adding more living space regardless of the weather. Oderings Landscaping is just a call away to help you with your autumn projects, whether it’s a new raised vegetable bed or help with pruning and spraying, our friendly team is ready to help, phone 021 913 747 or email admin@oderingslandscaping.co.nz.

M
etropol catches up with award-winning interior designer Angelique Armstrong of Armstrong Interiors about the impact of drapes on style and comfort.
How can we dress our windows for winter? In Christchurch, a large majority of our homes are single glazed and, with 75 percent of our heating believed to be lost through the windows, heavy drapes and good thermal linings are critical. The most popular options for linings are blackout and thermal backed lining. Blackout prevents light filtering through your windows, great for bedrooms, TV rooms and home theatres.
Angelique Armstrong Armstrong Interiors Ltd
Silver linings It’s coming into winter, so now is the time to start thinking about how you can create a warm and cosy home, without blowing your heating bills.
What are sheers? Sheers are used to filter the sun out. They are usually pulled during the day and create softness over the windows. This is a great way to add protection to your furniture and floor coverings. Sheers usually have a blackout lining on a second track to pull at night, for more privacy. This is the most cost effective way of dressing your windows with drapery. Sheers are usually reasonably priced and linings can be colour matched to your sheers. This is very popular at the moment for new home builds. What’s the go in trendy drapes? It’s all about the ‘heading’ and
there are plenty of options – boxed, pleated, wave, pinched. Your interior designer can advise you on the best heading for the fabric pattern and design you have chosen. My personal favourite is the box pleat. What is puddling? Puddling is when your curtain length is longer than the finished floor length and the drapes fall on the floor. This can be a very effective way to display your drape for a dramatic look. Drapes that puddle usually have tie backs accompanying them. Puddling is also used when you are using a natural fibre to allow shrinkage What about accessories and beading? Beading and trims can give you that little bit of added detail you may need to finish off your interior space and are great if you want to make a statement or add extra luxury to your interior design. If you are looking to upgrade your drapes for winter, come in and see us. We are able to give you good advice on what you need for your home and lifestyle. BALANCING ARCHITECTURE WITH INTERIOR DESIGN Rather than treating interior design as a finishing touch, architect Craig South suggests a collaborative approach can be much more effective.
A
rchitects and interior designers have traditionally tended to work apart but, in my experience, it’s far better to have both on the same page and working together from an early stage. Having a shared design vision is the best guarantee of an inspiring outcome. There may be a perception that the architect’s job stops at the front door, yet more often than not external form flows through to the interior and this, 64 March 14, 2019 Metropol
in turn, will influence how the interior comes together. Good communication between the architect and interior designer ensures both can be focussed on the same goal of creating spaces that people will enjoy living in. That means spaces that are functional and that will work well with a building’s form and aesthetics. When an architect and interior designer are in sync over key decisions, such as what materials will be used, a high level of overall consistency
can be achieved. Built-in features like window seats are a good example of how interior design and architecture can be linked in this way. Some might see them as a bit of a throwback, but window seats are great for storage and, if built in the right places, offer lovely little spots for enjoying views and sun. Similarly, built-in bookshelves and places for ornaments really help breathe life and personality into a home. When planning a new home, I’d suggest getting an interior designer on board as early as possible to kick start these positive design synergies, even if all you have is a concept drawing. Decisions on smart use of space for storage – or how best to frame views or site a fireplace – can be made in unison and with the client’s needs front and centre. Involving the interior designer early also streamlines their own
decision-making on furnishing and finishing. In my day to day practice, I am privileged to work alongside an in-house interiors team and find that being able to bounce ideas between us is very helpful to the overall design process. We also collaborate with other interior designers at various stages of our projects and find that to be invaluable to the end result. Take something as specific as a kitchen: it makes sense to bring the architect and interior designer together and let them know exactly how you want that space to perform. You can even show them where you envisage standing at your kitchen bench. A good mutual understanding of the space being created will get you off to a flying start. What we constantly strive to do in our own practice, as architects and designers, is to create playful, easy to use spaces. Our goal is not simply to create houses as shelter, but homes with personality that include all those special bespoke touches that add up to an enjoyable way of life. At its best, architecture and interior design are a kind of ‘pas de deux’, both working in tandem to produce a harmonised whole. www.allso.co.nz

Enter Trenzseater’s Ben Lewis, a New Zealand design talent with a notable pedigree. Trenzseater is distinguished by its truly international style – modern but also sophisticated, playful and elegant. The company’s interior design projects have been recognised within New Zealand and internationally for two consecutive years with three honourable mentions at the International Design Awards (IDA). the Bomma, Buster + Punch and Eichholz names as some of his clients’ favourites, buyers can see examples of all Trenzseater products in the showroom. Lewis says one of the hottest looks emerging from Europe are metallic finishes done in a fresh way, with gold and silver leaf among recent standout offerings. “We are even seeing gold and other metallic tints on glass, which looks amazing and is very hard for mainstream manufacturers to copy. There are also dulled down and worn-in bronze and matt black features,” Lewis adds, “which create a lived-in feel that lends a touch of understated elegance. Many of the designs arriving in the showroom have a truly timeless look about them, meaning you will love them for a lifetime rather than a season.”

Windwhistle family farm. The couple then lived in Wairarapa, where Fraser was a rural banker. Amanda taught at an intermediate school there, and learnt photography in order to teach the subject. “I just loved it and started a hobby business doing family photography.” After having her children Greta, now 5, and Dudley 3, they moved back to run the family farm two years ago. Photography became her career, and it was then that a photo of Lacey, a friend’s Highland cow, launched ‘By The Horns’. A curious expression on a large canvas, peeping out from a hairy mop, captured the public’s eye. “It really took off on Facebook and was quite overwhelming. It’s now taken over my life – but in good way.” Amanda doesn’t need to travel far for photo opportunities – Kiwi farmers with exotic creatures were all nearby. A Bison in Mt Somers, she says wouldn’t be classed as beautiful, but its majesty is stunning. Water Buffalos live five minutes away, and Fergus and Morag, the Highland bulls, are just down the road. Whereas, Woopie the Angus cow “with the llama eyes” is a beloved family pet. “The Black-nosed Valais from Sweden, are in Greta Valley and must
be the cutest lambs in the world.” Bully, the Angus bull, was a commissioned work, but was so popular he became a limited edition. The animals appear very striking on plain backgrounds. “The colours, and even the oak frames really suit our earthly interiors,” she says. Amanda also gathers bouquets from her garden for her Botanical floral prints. She recently sold three large prints to a brewery in Texas – ironically, called By the Horns. “They’re getting lots of attention. Selling in the US and UK is a goal.” Selling around 150 prints a month mainly in Australia and New Zealand, they are printed on museum-quality paper, and put on handmade stretched canvas or framed. Prices start from $75 to up to $900 for a larger limited-edition print. An average being $200 for an A1 size. They can be printed up to 1.5 metres “Working from home, I can be a full-time mum. I would love to have my own studio one day.” Amanda is keen to expand her menagerie - donkeys, llamas and wild Brumby horses. “I’m open to anything,” she says, meanwhile an African safari is also in the dream plans. studied art throughout high school, but lost touch with it for around four years after leaving. My family have always encouraged me to get back into it, so I joined at the beginning of the next available term.” Chelsea says that pencil drawing and acrylic painting are her preferred mediums, but she will give anything a go, which is
also her approach to painting styles. Currently, she’s exploring the abstract form, but also enjoys the challenge of realism painting. “I spent a year dedicated to one painting of a tiger!” Chelsea loves the atmosphere in her evening class. “They’re a great bunch of people; we always encourage each other. It’s fun and relaxed, even when everyone’s focused. There’s music playing, people chat and chill out. It’s great to come to class after work and just unwind.” Chelsea says her tutor, Leanne Addison, has been a great inspiration and support in helping her to overcome her lack of confidence with her work. “Leanne’s guidance has helped me create some great pieces. Whatever subject matter I choose, she helps me achieve what I hope for it.” Though not ruling out commission painting at some point in the future, for now, Chelsea’s happy place is at Art Metro, creating beautiful works in a beautiful space. Heavenly& & hands-on gifts Milestone events, ‘big’ birthdays, and of course weddings are occasions to be marked by meaningful gifts. The ideal gift is not only beautiful, but also useful – infusing every day with a souvenir of a significant event and a thoughtful loved one.
otal Food Equipment is a magpie’s paradise of the shiny, the stunningly beautiful, the useful and the quirky. The team knows their treasure and will help you find the perfect gift for every occasion and at the right price too. Owner Sandra McLay says providing items for a couple’s wedding register is a specialty. The prospective bride and groom simply come in and fill a trolley with pieces they would like to receive as gifts, in all price ranges. The team will write it up as an attractive list to be distributed to guests. “Creating a wedding register is a smart move for a couple,” Sandra says. “It ensures they receive the items they actually want, while their guests are safe in the knowledge that their gift will be absolutely appreciated.” A quality knife is a life-long treasure in the kitchen and the range available means every cook will find their perfect pairing. “A knife is a very personal thing; it’s the weight and how it feels in your hand,” Sandra says. Brands Arcos, Victorinox, Kai Shun, Wusthof, Sabatier and Miyabi are available, and the huge selection ensures the right blade for every job. Staub cast iron cookware is always sought-after, and added to Graphite and Cherry Red is new colourway La

Henkel brushed and polished stainless steel is a study in sturdy elegance, while WMF cookware cuts a stylish dash, adding a slick of scarlet to every piece. The very latest Kitchen Aid mixers come with two bowls and four types of attachment – dough hook, flat beater, flexi beater and wire beater, and a range of colours. Maxwell Williams boxed dinner sets are a great price and if someone in your life is flying the nest to go out on their own, they are hard to beat. Quirky, fabulous and indispensable items will bring joy on the big day, but also a smile to faces for years to come. The fabulous Dame Edna-style onionchopping glasses will turn tears to giggles every time and Sandra says everyone loves the Garject garlic press. BUILT TO LAST
Carl Gildea is passionate about creating beautiful outdoor spaces. He’s a perfectionist who after 15 years travelling the world and improving landscapes along the way, finally put down roots in the Garden City. What did he want to do here? He wanted to establish his own company and build gardens that will stand long and strong as peaceful oases for people to enjoy and cherish. And that is just what he has done.
S
ymbolically Carl named his company Willow Landscapes after the strong, hardy, graceful and instantly recognisable tree. “Every deck, retaining wall, pathway, lawn and garden we design and create is constructed to last, just like our namesake.” Carl‘s love of all things landscaping began on a working holiday in Australia where he thoroughly enjoyed
laying paving and building retaining walls. “It was hard work, but I could be creative and it was very satisfying seeing the final outcome. Once I returned to the UK I knew this was the work I wanted to do and anyone who visits Westminster walks on paving I laid. Now I’m continuing that tradition here in NZ.” Carl knows that preparation
is the cornerstone for a garden. “My team and I put a lot of work into the foundations of everything we do. It’s what’s below the surface that makes the biggest impact. Even our mighty willow is only as good as its root system. We consider every element necessary to fulfil a client’s requirements – design vision, materials, environment and
budget - to create a holistic outdoor area. Not only that but we really take great pleasure in every job. It’s wonderful to be outdoors and working hard.” There is tremendous versatility to the Willow Landscapes’ portfolio. They can tackle everything from hard landscaping through to the softening final touches of planting. “Gardens come to life with plants. Since being in New Zealand I’ve developed a deep appreciation for this country’s native plants and I love to include them in the gardens we construct.” Carl and Willow Landscapes take pride in the part they are playing in the legacy of our Garden City. For a free quote call Carl on 021 536 442.

s we increasingly seek alternatives to plastic, baskets boast that eco-luxury appeal and savvy shoppers are opting for a more natural alternative like these to highlight their homes. Basketry is truly an art form that utilises grasses, pine straw, stems and even animal hair to design beautifully intricate creations that are used all over the world.
Nothing says organisation like a tidy row of matching shelf-bound baskets for storage. Mixing sets of muted toned baskets of varying shapes and sizes is ideal for easy decor. Keep it simple for the kids by purchasing all the same baskets in bold colours so that everyone can keep their own belongings nice and tidy.

T
he mid-century, egg-shaped cane swinging chair hung on balconies in the swinging 60s. Recently new renditions swung back into vogue – then they really took off. Something so fun, cool and comfortable won’t just be a passing trend. Hanging securely from ceilings and stands in our bay windows, sunrooms, courtyards and lounges, swings come in rattan, cane, black, white, retro,
bohemian, futuristic, couches or chairs, simple or oversized bubbles. Our innate love of a gentle motion to relax is no longer reserved for tropical-holiday hammocks, as homes become havens. Swing chairs are glorious in the garden. A place to catch the afternoon sun and nod off. Swing chairs are great for kids’ rooms. Reading a book in their own swaying cocoon can’t be a chore.

Master
CRAFTSMANSHIP By Ben Selby
Last month I headed to the Regatta Restaurant and Bar in Takapuna, Auckland for the launch of the all-new Lexus UX urban-SUV.
T
he UX will feature in the Lexus line-up as the smallest SUV next to the popular NX and RX. The range consists of seven different models, including F-Sport and Limited variants, five of which are hybrids. Prices start at $59,900 for the entry-level UX 200 FWD (126kW/205Nm) with a 2.0-litre petrol engine with CVT box, and finish at the range-topping UX 250h Limited Hybrid (135kW/188Nm) with AWD at $75,900.
The UX comes with 18-inch alloys as standard, with a handsome LED rear light bar giving us something never before seen on a car like this. The inside features lane departure warning, three drive modes, 10.5-inch infotainment screen, front and rear parking sensors and reversing camera. F-Sport models get a racier interior and exterior and the ‘Limited’ models benefit from Lexus’ awesome Mark Levinson Sound System, sun roof and interior trim highlights
styled to resemble the same paper used in Japanese art. According to Lexus New Zealand Senior General Manager Paul Carroll, “It’s a car that really connects with people’s emotions, from its striking looks to its intelligent orchestration of the interior’s parts and the Japanese Takumi master craftsmanship”. Well I for one am definitely looking forward to driving both petrol and hybrid versions over the coming months.

with it again however, my favourite car from the X range, the X2, is back, badder than ever with the new X2 M35i, turbocharged 225kW 450Nm. How can they make something so good better? Give it a whopping power increase with 84kw and 170 more torque, that’s how! It’s the old X2 on steroids! The range is moving forward with an exciting Z4 and the incredible 8-series yet to be unveiled. Christchurch will be able to see these cars as they come in at the new showroom at 107 Moorhouse Avenue. It will house everything a Bayerische Motoren Werke fan will want to see and more. After being provided with lessons from some of the best automotive drivers in the industry and being given track time and vehicles far beyond my wildest dreams, I never take it for granted. Geoff passed away some years back now and I often think of my mate and I working on that tiny engine into the early hours. I wish he was here to hang out and talk about the latest models to hit the highway. He would love these new BMWs. But I’m very grateful that I can at least share these experiences with you.

s I was pushing the new X4 M40i around the Port Hills, I flashed back to driving my first car up to Sugarloaf. Man, what a machine the X4 is. Its sleek lines and technology are both beautiful and fantastic to drive, I mean fantastic. With power and style, this 8-speed, 4-cylinder, 265kW with 500Nm beast gives you great power at the touch of the accelerator. Gone are the days of horse power and engine size. Here is the finely tuned aggressiveness that is enhanced by engineering and refinement. Its starting price is a cool $126,500. I love my job. BMW keeps pushing the technology and vehicles forward; better and better. My next drive will be the exceptional 3 series up in Auckland. With the 330i at 190kW and 400Nm, it will have a little bit less grunt than the X4, but it’s a sedan built for a comfortable city drive. Priced at $89,900, it is coming in at an accessible price range, offering bang for your buck and a great addition to the range that BMW is excited to show the New Zealand market. Straight after I get back from Auckland, I’m in the X5, which I’ve already had some great time in and it will be interesting to re-acquaint myself

N ITS EAGER FOUR-POT REALLY LIKES TO GO
ow, with the current model maturing in the eyes of buyers, Kia’s firm foothold in the super competitive mid-sized SUV segment has been given a stylistic nip and tuck and a sportier GT badge to boot. Naturally I had to see if the changes were more than skin deep. Styling wise, the Sportage was already a looker. The new GT adds a more chiselled front and reformed LED head and taillights to great effect. Bigger 19-inch alloys also give some extra bling. The GT namesake is replacing the old Limited 2WD cars, making it the range topper. The Sportage GT Line Urban is available with a 2.0-litre petrol four cylinder with 2WD at $45,990, a 2.4-AWD petrol GT at $51,990 and the same in a diesel for $54,990. The petrol models make use of a six-speed auto box while the range topping diesel gets a new eight-speed auto. The six speed does

feel a tad last week in the new GT, however it’s 114kW and 192Nm of torque means that despite this, you end up making relatively brisk progress; though it would have been nice to have a small turbo to aid in this. As far as fuel consumption goes, Kia claims 8.2-litres/100km for the petrol, not sipping away but not exactly gulping the gas either. Inside things are well laid out and easy to operate. The 8-inch infotainment system is worth mentioning, as it’s one of the most clear and easy to use in a car of this type. Some of the switchgear feels a bit flimsy and the driving position is a tad too sit-up-and-payattention for my liking, but it’s still a pleasant place to be. In terms of kit the Sportage GT stacks up rather well, with Lane Departure Warning, heating and cooling in the leather seats, reversing camera, sat nav and the GT is also compatible with Android and Apple phones. Passenger entry and exit is a breeze and front and rear head and legroom is still generous. There are three driving modes on offer – normal, eco and sport. While sport gives you weightier steering and a sportier ride, don’t expect a wolf in sheep’s clothing kind of experience. That said, the GT is still a good drive regardless and its eager four-pot really likes to go. While it falls short in a few areas, the Kia Sportage GT is still a good package, cutting the mustard in terms of looks, comfort and a great selection of kit. This is sure to impress the Sportage faithful and may just tempt a few buyers away from the Japanese norm.
