Turn and face the strange Ch-ch-changes.” It's a famous line from one of the late music legend David Bowie's most well-known songs, Changes. And it's a message that will resonate strongly with all Cantabrians. In fact, it could be a fitting catchphrase for how we've had to adjust to massive upheaval and adapt to the reality of living in the unique environment that is post-earthquake Christchurch. Of course the concept of change can evoke positive thoughts of transformation, new innovations, variety and a welcome break from repetition, sameness and monotony. On the other hand, change can also be daunting, unsettling, risky and stressful. Unfortunately, we Cantabrians know this all too well after everything we've endured over the past five years. Some of us are living in temporary or rebuilt homes; operating new businesses; working in a different job; dealing with drastically altered financial or family situations – or all of the above. For others, the changes have been less significant but still inconvenient and frustrating. Perhaps it's having to get to grips with navigating an alternative route to work in the morning; shopping at an unfamiliar supermarket; or dropping the kids to a relocated school on the other side of town. The list of constant challenges goes on and on. We've all had to create a new framework and new routines for how we live – at a practical level – in our new surroundings. At the same time, we've had to develop coping mechanisms and dig deep in to our emotional reserves to display extraordinary resilience and mental toughness during the darkest of days and in the most heart-breaking times. Some of us react to change better and more easily than others. That's just human nature: we're all wired differently. The world would certainly be a boring place if we were all the same. For Metropol readers, the time has come for a changing of the guard. The arrival of a new Editor provides the perfect opportunity to explore fresh ideas and take a new perspective on things. But don't fret: the regular sections and features of this award-winning magazine will continue to engage, inspire and inform you every fortnight. I encourage you to embrace this new chapter in the Metropol journey. And, as always, we welcome your feedback on how we can enhance and improve our publication.

Art lovers rejoice: CoCA is back After much anticipation and hype, the long wait is almost over. The Centre of Contemporary Art (CoCA) opens its doors again on Saturday 13 February.
F
ive years after the earthquakes closed the Gloucester Street gallery, it is back in business with an exciting launch exhibition called Precarious Balance. Director and Principal Curator Paula Orrell says the reopening of CoCA, hard on the heels of the re-opening of the Christchurch Art Gallery, is another great step forward for the art-loving public of Christchurch, tourists and visitors. “We have a spectacular building to share with everyone, and a really significant exhibition to launch it with. CoCA was a dynamic and progressive institution before the earthquakes, and it has been missed by many, who we know are going to welcome the gallery's reappearance and the opportunities to experience art works that move, challenge and inspire them.” It has been a long haul for CoCA, whose building has received $4 million of repairs, strengthening and refurbishment over the past three years. CoCA's Mair Gallery is regarded as one of the most beautiful exhibition spaces in New Zealand, and Orrell says it has been lovingly restored. Precarious Balance is a group exhibition of works by New Zealand and international contemporary artists. It is the first of a two-part exhibition; Precarious Nature will be exhibited at the end of the year. Doors open to the public from 10am to 5pm this Saturday,
On Friday 22 January, supporters, staff, volunteers and the arts community came together to celebrate the refurbished CoCA building – a work of amazing craftsmanship worthy of its own exhibition. Photo: Nayhauss Photography www.nayhauss.co.nz.
with a series of speakers throughout the day. The gallery will then be open every day 10am-5pm. CoCA will run four seasonal programmes a year, as well as ongoing events.

DUANE MAJOR ADAM GARD’NER T
aking the reins of a nationwide campaign to return a
privately-owned piece of paradise to the people of
New Zealand, two Christchurch men, Duane Major and
his brother-in-law, Adam Gard'ner, are leading the fight to keep
one of New Zealand's most valuable assets for Kiwis. A utopian oasis in the Abel Tasman now hangs in the balance. Will it remain the property of one privileged individual or, with the backing of people all around New Zealand, become everyone's to share for generations to come? What sparked the notion to generate your campaign to raise $2 million dollars to buy the Awaroa Inlet for all New Zealanders to own collectively? DUANE: I think it was probably over a bowl of trifle on Christmas Day when Adam and I were chatting away, and somewhere in the midst of our banter about the cricket, politics, the new flag, and the property market, the idea emerged and got us thinking. ADAM: As they say, the hardest part of going for a run is tying your shoelaces, so it took a week or so, but once we finally made the decision to do it it quickly took on a life of its own thanks to Facebook and the Give A Little page.

WIN FOR ALL Be a part of history and make your pledge now at www.givealittle.co.nz/project/abeltasmanbeach2016 No money will be deducted from your account until the bid is won.
What has the response been so far? DUANE: Even better than we anticipated! After the first few pledges slowly trickled in, within seven days we'd already raised $700,000. Since then we've attracted support from all kinds of people; from the likes of Kiwi comedian Rhys Darby to company CEOs to the humble working man and his family. What is your response to people who may say you've taken on an insurmountable task? ADAM: Not trying at all is the only kind of failure. If we go in swinging then at least we can say we gave it our best shot. DUANE: It's going to be down to the wire and we are prepared to fail, but wouldn't it be amazing if we succeeded? What do we as New Zealanders stand to gain if we win the tender? ADAM: Having just returned home from 12 years living in Shanghai, where the population is dense and land is at a premium, it made me realise just how precious something like Awaroa Inlet is. This is the first time my kids have lived in
New Zealand so for them to experience the unfettered beauty of the Abel Tasman is what we want for every family, for generations to come. We believe this opportunity should be available to all New Zealanders. It's about reclaiming a piece of our land we can all share in, but it's also about demonstrating the positive power of the people. It's a story that can be passed on to our kids and generations to come, a memory for us all to be part of, but the greatest sense of satisfaction of all is the empowerment this gives us as a collective whole. What has been the most satisfying aspect of this experience? DUANE: Connecting with people and being inspired by their generosity. Like the CEO of Spark who just quietly dipped into his own pocket, in addition to the 20k the company had already pledged, or the mum who chipped in 50 cents for each of her kids and grandchild, and I thought to myself, now that's the spirit! It reminds me of
the days of Telethon when all it took was ordinary New Zealanders to get behind an idea to push it over the finishing line. That's what it's all about. Why isn't the Government leading this kind of initiative? DUANE: We'd love the Government and big corporations to get on board, but it starts with the people. Even if the governing bodies wanted to, there's so much red tape for them to mobilise fast enough. With the power of the internet we have the immediacy to make it happen quicker. It doesn't matter who you are or what you do. Whether you're a pastor or a politician, we're all New Zealanders and are part of this great country. We as individual citizens have this incredible opportunity to empower ourselves without having to rely on some governing body or large corporation to swoop in and rescue us. We have the power to make it happen ourselves. If everyone chips in just 50 cents, we can make this happen.

Great but troubled and dysfunctional Winston's Birthday, written by Paul Baker and directed by Lara Macgregor, is on stage at The Court Theatre until 27 February.
B
y any definition of greatness, Sir Winston Churchill fits the bill. Yet often behind a grand façade lies domestic turbulence. On the 51st anniversary of Winston Churchill's death, The Court Theatre's production of Winston's Birthday brings together four excessive personalities from this iconic British family at a luncheon to celebrate Winston's 88th birthday in 1962. The Churchills are forced to confront half a century of unfinished family business, which includes family lies, evasions and resentments. Though they never attracted the attention of social services, the Churchills were a highly dysfunctional family. Winston, the centrifugal force, contrived to be oblivious to anything domestic. Randolph and Sarah, two of Churchill's five children doomed to live in the shadow of greatness, lived conspicuously unfulfilled and undisciplined lives. This was all too much for Churchill's perfectionist wife Clementine, who regularly fled to holiday or hospital. Into the mix infiltrates Dr Jenkins, a fictional character whose style of scholarship and social skills symbolises the new meritocratic Britain that will render the world of the Churchills obsolete. Winston's Birthday has been written as an historical comedy, and director Lara Macgregor is prepared to showcase all the
comic elements of this iconic yet eccentric British family. “At the heart of Winston's success is a craving for his father's approval. This launched a lifetime course of self-improvement in an attempt to achieve it,” says Macgregor. “In turn, Winston's children crave the same approval from him. This play is a smart and funny imagining of what mending

IN THE CITY WHAT’S ON BARS & CAFES WHAT’S NEW ART RETAIL DOWNTOWN
Life returns to city's dusty core It has been more than five years since the first of a spate of earthquakes tore through Canterbury causing damage to the local landscape, some of which was reparable, but much of which was not. And, although the fences continue to surround a portion of the dusty core of Christchurch's CBD, the city's fringes have begun to stir and life is creeping back into the central space. Metropol looks at some of the city's key infrastructural developments and where they are at now.
Retail precinct comes to life
Art Gallery again takes pride of place
Stage I of Nick Hunt's $140m BNZ Centre, which faces onto Hereford Street, has just opened, with retail and hospitality tenancies on the ground floor and large office space in the remaining four floors. Stage II – a large five-storey building fronting onto Cashel Street – is expected to be completed by December this year. This 18,600 m2 building will sit in front of Stage I and forms a central courtyard on the site of the old Whitcoulls building.
Five years after closing its doors, the Art Gallery is now open. While the gallery was closed, the building was also converted into a Base Isolated Structure. It is now free to move on its bearings in the event of any future shaking, providing world-class protection for the new collections as well as the return of beloved collections. To mark the re-opening, the team has planned a summer-long series of events.

IN THE CITY
BNZ House makes way for development The new owner of the BNZ House, Nexus Point Ltd, has begun clearing the remaining asbestos from the derelict building, in preparation for demolition. The 13-storey building was damaged in the earthquakes and BNZ moved out, leaving the building empty. Nexus Point purchased the entire row of Hereford Street properties and has already started demolishing neighbouring buildings to make way for a new development. The company hopes to have the site cleared by April and construction on a new development could start later this year.
Town Hall's historic renaissance Seven months into the $127m Town Hall restoration project, demolition of the old Boaters restaurant is complete and work is progressing on the foundations.

Hawkins Construction began jet grouting on the site in November and it is expected to be completed by June before the existing concrete slab is removed and a new one laid. The work is expected to be completed in June.
World-class Innovation Precinct takes shape The Innovation Precinct welcomed Dux Central in September. Brick Farm and C1 have already settled into renovated sites, while Joe's Garage is awaiting completion of its new building. Vodafone's $50m building is more than half-way up, alongside Kathmandu's $23m headquarters and a car parking building opposite, with expected completion dates in March/April. Several existing buildings have been purchased and earmarked for development, while other new buildings are in the works. An estimated 1500 office workers will move into the precinct this year.

Designed in Australia, the dresses use natural fibres such as cotton, silk and wool for their original signature designs - all cut to flatter the figure and make sure you make an entrance. If a dress is not your thing, shop around for new season long pants or culottes, or a
great-fitting pencil skirt, and add colour with tops either fitted or flowing. Add accessories to complete your outfit, beginning with the basics of jewellery and a clutch. Have some fun and dress it up a little with a fascinator – check online for the latest international trends. Choose footwear that is appropriate for the occasion. Save stilettos for an indoor wedding and try wedges or chunky heels for the garden and even sparkly flats or slip-ons for a beach setting. Finally, for a New Zealand wedding a warmer layer is a must, whether it is a short, fitted jacket, a softly-woven wrap or a beautiful knit.

Jewellery inspired by artists and architects There has never been more than a fine line between art, its creative desire and the interpretive methods of fashion. With The Arts Collection, the new collection from Dyrberg/Kern, inspiration was drawn from painters, sculptors and architects who, each in their own way, have left their mark on everything from fashion to social awareness.
I
n the words of Gitte Dyrberg herself, “art and the art of creation have always been sources of inspiration for our work”. The Arts Collection includes several style themes. The watch selection features styles that embrace a new, simpler retro look. Design features include exceptional metal combinations, technical sub-dials and interesting polishing effects. 'Jewellery that tells time' continues to be the mantra of Dyrberg/Kern watches. Functionality and comfort are, as always, indispensable essentials of the collection. All Dyrberg/Kern timepieces are passionately designed and hand-assembled by highlyskilled technicians, ensuring the beauty and quality of the watches. One theme of The Arts Collection is Sculpture, which honours the exceptional ability of artists to view and comprehend the world through peculiar shapes and the three-dimensional, just like Japanese
“art and the art of creation have always been sources of inspiration for our work”. – Gitte Dyrberg origami. Hand-crafted, moulded and shaped, each piece of jewellery is just like a sculptured piece of art. Another theme is Architect; pieces are minimalistic, stringent and clean – in the same way that contemporary architecture pays tribute to the simple, the modern and the clean.
The Arts Collection will be delivered to Quinns in Merivale and The Collective at The Colombo in mid to late February.

VINTAGE with attitude and style Rockabillies, rejoice! After an eye-opening trip to Australia last year Kaye Clyne decided to give Canterbury the access to haute vintage and 50s-style fashions that it's been lacking. I'm talking about Kabella Baby and it rivals similar boutiques found across the ditch.
F
rom its humble beginnings at markets Kabella Baby has since evolved into a studio (open on weekends) and a thriving online store. But before you go thinking “I don't do vintage,” I suggest you at least take a peek. Each design celebrates the allure of the feminine form. There are certainly some quirky pieces, but there's an equally enticing array of elegant work-appropriate looks. Kaye admits she's converted many women – and men - as there's select menswear to match – and is yet to find someone she can't dress. Brands from Australia, England and throughout New Zealand are sourced with the intention of creating variation and individuality. And FYI Kaye is soon releasing her own clothing line, which boasts vintage fabrics constructed into the same feminine, suburban styles but with a 'Kiwiana' twist. “There's been a revival in demand for vintage and rockabilly because it can be done today to differing degrees. It doesn't have to be all antiquated and skulls,” she says. These timeless styles flatter every body type and as such come in sizes 6-24. Petite women love that they are given shape and

Local medical research for global health issues With two universities educating future health professionals in Christchurch, it should be no surprise to learn the depth of medical research talent that is quietly working on some of the world's most devastating health conditions, in labs and hospitals right here in our city.
T
he biggest challenge faced by young researchers is accessing funding to allow them to take part in ground-breaking research. With health research funding from the Government static at best, the role of local niche funders, such as the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation (CMRF), has become a vital lifeline for research projects that might otherwise never get out of the starting blocks. In the past year, CMRF has funded more than $1.3 million in medical research. The eclectic mix of research projects reflects the Foundation's desire to fund the 'small and interesting' projects that have scientific merit, but which might find it hard to get adequate attention from larger funders. In 2015, the Foundation funded projects looking at various cancers, a Fellowship to assess how well our acute care system is working at Christchurch Hospital, heart research and a project to assess the unmet health needs in the Canterbury area, amongst many others. The Foundation actively supports both the University of Canterbury and the University of Otago by funding several Summer Studentships, where students are given the opportunity to get real-world research experience over the summer break. The Foundation also runs its own Brain Research Institute, specialising in research into Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Dementia, Huntington's and Multiple Sclerosis. Currently the Institute is assisting NASA by scanning the brains of staff coming off the ice, to see if there are any changes due to the harsh conditions. Midway through 2015, the Foundation entered into a partnership with the Breast Cancer Foundation, to fund Professor Margreet Vissers from the University of Otago, who is looking at the role of Vitamin C in controlling various cancers. Partnerships such as this are an important tool for the Foundation. “Being able to partner with other funders to get these projects over the line
is a great way to maximise the support for research available throughout the country,” says Kate Russell, CMRF CEO. “On our own, many of these projects would simply be too expensive, but by partnering with other Foundations we can really make an impact on these devastating health conditions. I think it's also an elegant model of collaboration for the greater good and shows that, particularly in the ‘not for profit’ sector, we can put aside any ideas of self-promotion, for the greater good.” The Foundation is 100 percent reliant on the support of the Canterbury community to carry on its work. CMRF likes to give $2 million away each year and is working hard to build up its capital fund to make this possible. “The more Canterbury supports us, the more we can give to these vitally important research projects,” says Ms Russell. “Our hope is that Cantabrians will see the benefit of supporting a local charity, making a difference to health outcomes globally.” For further information visit www.cmrf.org.nz

NORTH CANTERBURY
Let’s pop the corks After a 20-year history, a few earthquakes, a new location and the odd weather bomb, the Waipara Valley Wine and Food Festival is back this autumn (Sunday 6 March) to celebrate the region's most burgeoning wine region, in the country's most diverse food basket of North Canterbury. eople may have already seen some of the new rebranding around the city. This is still a small festival that celebrates the harvest time; however the organising committee has refreshed it with the help of local ideas and 'good stuff' company Brown Bread. Jo Blair from Brown Bread explains that “we wanted to present the festival in a younger, more contemporary way – expressing the growing young community of winemakers who are helping establish North Canterbury as one of the premium wine-producing regions of New Zealand”.

Playing a huge part in the revival of the festival is Penelope Naish from Black Estate. “I'm thrilled to see the effect that the new-look event is having on the wider community. The feedback

Face painting for the kids we have been receiving at our cellar door is incredibly encouraging and ticket sales are increasing. It seems people are engaging with this year's festival. We're all pretty obsessed with the new branding too. The mushroom illustration is a personal favourite – it gets me every time.” Those with a long-standing and loyal relationship to this North Canterbury event will continue to have a strong presence, along with the introduction of new food heroes from the region to perfectly complement the already established festival community. Duck confit from Giulio of Roots Restaurant in Lyttelton; a showcase of North Canterbury vegetables from chef Alex Davies; and Jonny Schwass on the Charcoal Relief Unit are just a few examples of how North Canterbury's wine region is positioning wine with the innovative food movement happening in the city.

incoln University will bring the ConversatioNZ tent to the event. This is a space where a line-up of a North Canterbury winemaker and one food producer will team up and talk together about various 'growing' topics. Whether it's wild yeasts, truffles and pinot noir or cheese and riesling, there will be some serious conversations around how we are eating in New Zealand taking place, as well as opportunities to sample for a few lucky front-row listeners. Cakes by Anna will be coming along for the occasion, collaborating with Grizzly Bagel, another well-known Christchurch foodie. “I'm looking forward to being a part of an event that's all about celebrating our local producers, chefs and creative thinkers,” the local baker says.
“Wine and cake has always paired nicely – they scream a 'festival time'”. The music line-up will centre around two small stages among the Glenmark Domain. One station will feature jazz, singer-songwriters and a little rock for the end of the day courtesy of local treasure, Lindon Puffin. Sponsor RDU 98.5 FM will be spinning records at a new station. “We're really excited to be involved with the festival because we love everything local, and it's events like this that showcase the best of Canterbury. Our DJs will be bringing their best tunes to help make this an amazing day out." Organising chair Catherine Keith, from Mount Brown Estates, says this is a festival emerging with a point of difference. “It's small and it's real. Over the years, events such as these have grown large and have lost their way, but with pony rides, areas to picnic, an onsite Waipara Farmers Market and pockets of family-friendly entertainment, this is a gathering that is being true to the region, and one to watch.”

Teddy the bear takes kids on a magical mystery tour of the Sounds... A passion for travel, writing, art and photography led Sally Louise Hill to produce A Bear's Journey – The Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand.
T
he self-published multi-media children's book is the first in a series about Teddy Bearson and his travel adventures, inspired by the Timaru author's numerous journeys to the Marlborough Sounds with her husband Trevor and grandson Mishca. Sally Louise and her husband raised Mishca and began travelling with him in 1992, when he was aged five. Over the next 10 years their globe-trotting took them to Tahiti, the United States; England, Spain, Portugal, Norway, Sweden, Italy, Turkey, Greece, France, Morocco, Ecuador, the Amazon Basin and the Galapagos Islands. Having lived in Timaru for 37 years, Sally Louise loves being close to the sea, mountains and lakes – and this appreciation of nature is reflected in the mixture of stunning photos, paintings and pencil drawings of animals, birds, flora and fauna that illustrate the book. Children will take great delight in following Teddy and Mishca on their adventures and explorations in the Marlborough Sounds, as well as their friends Willy Weka, Pappy the possum and Ollie the octopus. Teddy learns about the animals in the bush and the sea, and his confidence grows. He collects mussels with the family, learns to swim, fish and row a boat. On the way home from the trip, Teddy discovers that more trips are planned. This is good news for Teddy, as he realises that he now loves to travel. Like the fictional character she has created, Sally Louise also has a passion for “travel seeking magical places”. She explained in the preamble to the book that, as a child, her favourite stories were Aladdin and Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. The book has already made an impression on literary experts. “This is a stunning book – the photos are wonderful,” a reviewer for booksellersnz

Make it a wedding day to remember Congratulations; you're engaged and looking forward to your dream wedding. To make that special day perfect and without any last-minute hitches, you need to be focused and organised. Here are some tips to ensure planning goes smoothly and 'the big day' is the most memorable experience of your life.
T
he first step is to set the date. Check that the date you want does not clash with another major event that might make bookings difficult, or prevent your guests from being able to attend. Then set the tone of the wedding. Will it be a formal affair – perhaps in a church – a casual affair, or a themed wedding? While it's easy to get caught up in the fairytale of fancy dresses and five-course menus, financial considerations need to be a guiding factor. Setting a budget – and then sticking to it – is really important. Things have changed from the days when, traditionally, the bride's parents were expected to pay for the entire wedding. Talk to your parents and ask them if they'd like to contribute and how. Venues can get booked out well in advance, especially in the summer season, so start looking early and you're more likely to get the date, time and price that suits. Make sure you confirm the booking and all the details in writing, to avoid any confusion. After this crucial step has been organised, consider hiring a wedding planner or consultant. If you're really busy and feeling overwhelmed by the task ahead, it could be money well spent to ask a professional to take over. It's okay to delegate – don't be afraid to ask for help. There is one element that is non-negotiable on your wedding day: an authorised and registered person to perform the service. Choosing a marriage celebrant is an important decision, as this person can make a significant difference to the ceremony. Sit down face to face with various celebrants and see if you have a rapport with them. They need to be on the same wavelength with you and your partner so they fully understand your values and beliefs and what sort of atmosphere you're trying to create on the day. Then you can turn your attention to the fun stuff, such as dresses, suits, flowers, rings, food, photos, cakes and music.
The memory of our attention to detail ...
is to love and to cherish from your wedding day forward
A very special setting for intimate boutique weddings where your own wonderful memories will be created.

SOLVE YOUR WEDDING DAY DILEMMAS Is it okay to invite guests just to the reception, or just to the dance, and not the wedding ceremony? Yes. You might decide that the ceremony is just for family and close friends. Do keep in mind, though, that some people might feel offended if they are not invited to the entire day's proceedings. It's also less than ideal – and a little awkward – if guests arrive for the wedding dance and then have to wait while people are still eating dinner. Who reads emails or messages of congratulations at the reception?
Why have milk when you can have
cream?
The best man. It's a really good idea to brief him properly beforehand though, and ensure that all messages are checked well before the reception so any rude jokes or inappropriate comments are not read out. Does the bride have to give her bridesmaids a gift? A small lasting gift, such as a pair of earrings or necklace that can be worn on the wedding day and afterwards, is a nice gesture to say thanks and how much you appreciate your bridesmaids' support and involvement in your big day. How should we arrange table seating? It's up to you, but no one wants to be stuck at a table full of single people or with all the boring old aunts and uncles. Try to mix it up so couples and singles are scattered around the room. At every table, aim for a balance of people who already know each other and others who haven't yet met but may have a few things in common. Do we have to set up a wedding registry with a certain store or stores? It comes down to personal preference. Some people find it embarrassing asking guests to buy gifts from a specified list of items. On the other hand, it's a practical way to ensure you don't end up with 50 platters or far too many crystal vases. Should we expect guests to bring wedding gifts to the reception? Yes. Have a table set up at the venue so they can be displayed.
polisheddiamonds.co.nz 30 New Regent Street, Christchurch CBD 46 February 11, 2016 Metropol
Are financial contributions displayed along with other wedding gifts? No, but they can be noted on a card. To be discreet, don't mention how much each guest contributed.

THE POUR – how to achieve the ultimate one By Nicholas Henare
The Heineken Star Serve Bartender of the Year regionals were held recently at The Tannery in Woolston. The green carpet was rolled out and the best pourers in the South Island gathered to pour the perfect pint.
N
ow I love a good beer and I've spent plenty of time in a bar, but am oblivious to the art of The Pour. There are a number of things to remember: The Rinse – rinsing your glass so it is cold. The Pour - pouring the beer at the right angle. The Skim - after The Pour - levelling off your beer with a pallet knife. The Serve - the style in which the beer is served. Sounds easy doesn't it, but it isn't. The result must be checked for curvature, closing, height and alignment. There is a plethora of other requirements when it comes to the best; pages and pages in fact. To gain entry to the competition a mystery judge visits bars, so selection is not a given.
Craig Scholes, winner of the Christchurch Heineken Star Serve Bartender of the Year regionals
Christchurch Heineken Star Serve semi-finals judges (LR) Taylor Green, Israel Dagg and Alex Biedermann
I got chatting to Pete Rathod, from Sugarhorse on Moorhouse Ave, My failure was complete who explained the intricacies of The Pour. He's been pouring for 10 years. “Every Pour is different - gas pressure, line length. What may be good at a bar won't cut it at this level.” I could see the nerves breaking out as everyone went into round one of two. One competitor cracked and had to re-pour and you could hear the audience gasp. It was Pete's turn and the judges - All Black Israel Dagg, Heineken's National Beer Ambassador Alex Biedermann and brand manager Taylor Green - were hard on him. Craig Scholes from 1876 Bar in Queenstown won and is off to the finals in Auckland on 21 February. That winner will face off against the world's best in Amsterdam. Pete came seventh, but won the Flair award. I tried my luck at a pour. The result was a disaster. No job for me behind a bar - back to being simply a patron.

f Yum Cha, a traditional Chinese brunch only available during lunch hours, is your thing then you've got to give it a try. I popped in with my boys to nd wonderful steamed dumplings, deep-fried squid, Prawn Cheong Fun, Sui Mai (little pork and prawn dumplings) and so much more. The avours are marvellous. There are so many choices on the menu it's hard to decide. One I can thoroughly recommend is Peking duck. The concept is like putting little strips of vegetables and a piece of duck in a pancake with a special sauce. Then you wrap it up and eat it like a spring roll. Chinese dining is about lling the table with various dishes and sharing together. It's a great way to have fun with friends and Maxine's Palace has everything for that special function or group booking. At 283 Lincoln Road just over from the ANZ, there's lots of parking. Go to Facebook and take a look or call to book on (03) 335 0100. As my son Tom said, it's his new favourite restaurant. You should make it yours too. Enjoy.

In the kitchen an international team combines knowledge of food culture, ingredients and dishes from western and eastern cuisines. Front of house staff are multilingual and passionate about both the food and the customers. This unique 'Modern Asian Eatery' is about to celebrate its three-year anniversary. It was a brave move to open a restaurant on 28 February 2013 in the midst
of the inner city after quake chaos, let alone a restaurant with a difference. But it's a move that has paid off. In China, DUO means “more” and owners and staff offer customers an experience that's more than just the usual fusion or traditional Asian. DUO's signature dish is crispy eggplant – Chinese inspired but with DUO's own twist. The tangy, crunchy-chewy sticky Sichuan coating and creamy flesh combo is a gastronomic delight. Other favourites are spicy wonton soup, dumplings, and yellow curry with pumpkin and tofu. The menu changes with the seasons, and the
autumn menu will feature more classical dishes (think noodles, buns and dumplings), all given, of course, the innovative DUO touch! With funky indoor décor and sheltered outdoor seating with views of the Botanic Gardens, DUO is a great place to relax with a drink or dine on healthy, affordable fare. It is open seven days (no surcharge ever!) and there is a happy hour every day 4:306:30pm. For exciting, modern Asian cuisine, DUO is the go-to place. It is also perfect for private or business functions.

ver the years I've been given the opportunity to try experiences that are more than a touch special. Chambord liqueur comprises one of those moments. Invited to play croquet at Riccarton House while the best cocktail maker in New Zealand makes you a drink - very special. I tried a Bramble, consisting of Chambord liqueur, Haymans gin, lemon juice and a lemon wedge. It's a fantastic cocktail. To mix perfect cocktails start with quality ingredients – liqueurs, spirits, fresh fruit and juices. Here's the essential list for your bar: shaker, jigger (measure), strainer, stirring spoon, ice bucket and scoop, knife and chopping board. Stock up on a selection of premium liqueurs such as Chambord - an infusion of black and red raspberries. Here's a recipe that won't go astray.
CHAMBORD PUNCH ROYALE Ingredients: 150 ml Chambord Liqueur 150 ml Cranberry 2 Bottles Champagne/ Pasqua Prosecco 100 ml Soda
Method: Fill a large pitcher with ice. Add Chambord, cranberry juice and two bottles of your favourite ďŹ zz. Stir and then plop in the juiciest raspberries and blackberries.

With Valentine's Day looming the average New Zealand male starts to tremble with anxiety. Yes - thanks to film and media, women are bombarded with images of a romantic Lothario ready to sweep them off their feet with chocolates, flowers and writings of undying love.
Solve your Valentines' Day dilemma
F
ear not romantic men of fair Christchurch. I bring you an idea: an al fresco picnic! To prepare your partner of choice watch La Dolce Vita the night before and suggest a picnic. Put together your favourite Italian foods, pack an old-fashioned hamper with stuffed chilli peppers, olives and prosciuttowrapped melon skewers to enhance the al fresco dining experience, while maintaining a simple yet elegant take on a classic New Zealand beach dinner. Trade up your fish and chips on the beach for tomato, onion and basil bruschetta with balsamic vinaigrette. It's the Italian cheese toastie. An orange and fennel salad is used throughout Italy as a summery appetizer. And no Italian feast is complete without true authentic gelato. Don't forget to bring along your Italian-

inspired picnic blanket, protecting yourself from any unwanted sand spoiling your delicious feast, and battery-powered candles are a must-have. These will set the romantic ambience for the evening without running the risk of any unwanted disturbances.
Download or Spotify some Italian music from the likes of Andrea Bocelli and Luciano Pavarotti. These artists embody the romantic persona, taking your picnic setting to another level. Then the most important part: the drink, San Pellegrino, was created in Milan from mineral water in 1899 and it's the perfect drink for a romantic Italian picnic. It is the champagne of carbonated beverage. The perfect cocktail is a Classic Italian 75. Purchase a bottle of Pasqua prosecco and mix with San Pellegrino limonata. There are other flavours: Aranciata rosa (blood orange); Aranciata and Pompelmo (grapefruit). They all taste great with gin and vodka. In this way you can have yourself a wonderful Italian experience and fun with your partner leading up to or on Valentine's Day.

LINCOLN
From country village to flourishing culinary hub “A busy little country village”. That would describe Lincoln township for a large part of its existence, since it was established in 1862 by James Edward Fitzgerald of 'The Springs'. It had the necessary butchers, brewers, bakers and confectioners and, in later years, the fish and chip shop, the Chinese, Indian and sushi restaurants and takeaway outlets and coffee shop.

ynonymous with the Lincoln food scene for decades – since 1967 in fact – has been Hillyer's of Lincoln, which started as a small bakery. It didn't take long for the family's recipes to gain a reputation for exquisitely delicious home baking. They are especially famous for their gourmet pie range with their sumptuous fillings, such as chilli con carne, chicken asparagus bacon and cream cheese or steak caramelised onion and red pepper. It was the Canterbury earthquakes, however, that began to shake Lincoln from its quiet and tranquillity. New subdivisions sprang up seemingly overnight to cater for displaced Christchurch people seeking firmer ground and with them has come a desire for a greater variety of restaurants and cafés.

HILLYER’S OF LINCOLN
GROUSE HOTEL
THE LABORATORY
It was the Canterbury earthquakes that began to shake Lincoln from its quiet and tranquillity.
The Famous Grouse Hotel, the only pub in Lincoln, had sat on the same site since 1868. It was demolished after the September 2010 earthquake, but a fabulous revisiting of the old pub has recently opened serving superb gastro pub grub all day. Coffee Culture found its way to Lincoln too, with their 'fix' brewed from the finest Arabic beans roasted to perfection and served with love. The stylish store definitely brought a touch of sophistication to the Lincoln culinary environment. Then last year came The Laboratory, an experimental craft beer brew house, bar and restaurant that has quickly become both integral to the heart of the local community as well as worth travelling to. Lincoln has indeed now come of age gastronomically.

he buildings are sympathetic to the alpine surroundings - raw stained timber with spacious shop interiors, wide mountain views and a relaxing 'walkabout' atmosphere. At the head of the complex is the new Artisan Spa beauty centre with four treatment rooms available. It's the perfect location for a group or a girls' weekend treat your daughter, mother, or your husband! Beauty choices are wide-ranging, from a luxurious hour-long tailor-made facial, to body treatments and remedial or aromatic massages. For locals there are great discounts on beauty services and products.
The top-of-the-line facilities include a skin scanner, which helps consultants choose the best facial treatment, or full body massage where you choose your own scented oil. It's luxury in one stop. Also in the Village Shopping Centre children can enjoy a delicious hot treat from the Hanmer Bakery, next to the conveniently located Healthworks Pharmacy, or enjoy the safe, flat interconnecting communal areas while parents soak up the shopping atmosphere. Rohm and Mirror Mirror boutiques have a good range of women's clothing. Find something for dining out or treat yourself to a colourful top to wear over swimwear. The choices are impressive.
For home enthusiasts Homestead Interiors offers a good mix of gifts, cards, rugs, furniture and lighting - lots of natural tones and plenty of gems to find. As the town's weekend population continues to grow, the new village complex is one to watch.

HOME EXTERIORS INTERIORS BUILDING OUTDOORS KITCHENS & BATHROOMS
Quality and functionality take over from square footage Transforming a house into a home has been a human endeavour since our forebears painted their cave walls. Although the physical nature of our homes has evolved rather dramatically since limestone and water formed our place of solace, the modern home is still a vehicle for personal expression.
The 'outdoor room' movement creates the illusion of a larger house and brings the outdoors in, while the kitchen offers options for personalised design elements.
A
lthough three to four bedroom homes remain the most popular house size, Kiwis are choosing to spend up on stylish features to reflect individual needs in their new homes, according to residential builders who observe these trends. Purchasers are adding customised home variations worth tens of thousands of dollars and potentially much more to their long-term property value as they make specific product and design choices. Apparently quality, functionality and open-plan design with customised storage
solutions for personal interests and hobbies have taken over from square footage in smaller builds. People want to maximise available space and construct a smart, functional and efficient home for their family without over-capitalising on their investment. Kitchens and al fresco dining areas and outdoor rooms are where those personalised design elements can be best seen. The outdoor room movement has created the illusion of a larger house and brings the outdoors in. In terms of interior design trends, 2015
saw a movement toward the Scandinavian look of light wood and white tones teamed with primitive materials such as timber, stone, leather and fur – all of which recently emerged on TV3's The Block NZ Villa Wars. Trends for 2016 include a move to black stainless steel, formal dining rooms and bathrooms that feel like living spaces. This year will see a continuation of sophisticated pastel hues and relaxed neutral combinations dominating interiors, but there are plenty of colours on the horizon with unexpected blends of bright, bold colours and textured prints.

ith today's busy lifestyles we're all under increased pressure to juggle numerous balls in the air at once. That, combined with modern diets, stress and physical activity, can contribute to low, depleted or compromised protein levels. This can affect muscles, skin and even hair condition. It's the latest wholefood release from the New Zealand-owned and operated company. he biggest problem facing skin health in New Zealand is the amount of time we spend in the sun, according to Creator and Director of Oasis Beauty Stephanie Evans. “Sexy tanned and glowing skin is all about faking it not baking it,” she explains. Saving the day one tan at a time is Oasis Beauty's new Super Tan. It's a moisturising gradual tanner with a light instant bronzer that leaves your skin with a safe, sunless, holiday-like glow to be enjoyed all year round, even if your skin is covered up. Suitable for all skin types – including those with sensitive skin – Super Tan has a quick-drying, non-greasy texture, and it doesn't have an overpowering smell like many self-tanning products do. Its formulation combines active tanning ingredients naturally derived from sugar beets, sugar cane and red raspberries. Another bonus is that it's 100 percent vegan and comes with a free applicator mitt for a smooth and streak-free application. Oasis Beauty Super Tan and Applicator Mitt RRP $34.90 for 150ml.

URBAN FARMS FOR THE NEXT GENERATION Take a walk down Peterborough Street and you will see a flourishing garden. The urban farm is the work of Cultivate Christchurch, a group which is working to build a network of productive urban farms across the city.
“F
or us it is about growing healthy food and supporting young people in a real-world context,” says co-founder Fiona Stewart. “We have the opportunity for conversations with youth about their values and ambitions as they work alongside the Cultivate Christchurch team on the farm. With the support of our community we grow skills and provide meaningful work experience while engaging and inspiring young people to live lives they value.” Fiona combined forces with Bailey Peryman to begin the concept last year, with her background in youth justice and mental health fitting well with his knowledge of community gardens and the local food network. Funding has been provided through the Vodafone Foundation that includes support from the Ākina Foundation, which is about growing social enterprise. “We wanted to show this is the way we are growing produce; this is how we are working with youth and this is the impact
it has on young people,” says Fiona. The Peterborough Street farm is set to be the first of many. Their produce is already being sold and donated locally with the intention to maintain 70 percent of produce sold to ultimately create a sustainable charitable company and continue donating 30 percent to those in need. To find out more, including how you can offer support, visit Cultivate Christchurch on Facebook or at www.cultivate.org.nz.

to tempt Run them up the wall, across the floor, along the bathtub or behind the stove. No matter where you place them, tiles are right up there in the style stakes.
Marble-look ceramic tiles and tiles that replicate a concrete finish in line with the industrial look are still coming through strong. Many of these tiles are in very large sizes. The focus on replicating natural materials, including paper, fabric and metals, means colours are muted and restrained. But when it comes to colour, turquoise – a deep, saturated hue that evokes the ocean – is proving a popular standout. Tessellating patterns and mosaics – with their timeless style – are now moving into 3D effects, producing tiles with depth, through to those which are arranged to cast shadows that fall in patterns. Small-scale tiles also have their place and many have carefully rendered textures – satin, gloss, rough, smooth and even wood-like – which demand to be touched.

s we power our way into 2016, we look at what the world’s largest ceramic tile trade show Cersaie suggests we have in store for the upcoming months as far as tile trends are concerned. The lookalikes are back - yes, planks and panels that recreate the look of wood and marble are still in full force. Whether you want to create a natural rustic look or something more contemporary and sophisticated, there are timber tiles to suit.
That's the news out of Italy, or more precisely Cersaie, which delivers the looks that will define tiled spaces in 2016.

Clever water filtration systems such as reverse osmosis filtration can filter out contaminants from tap water. 'Touchless technology' can help your family avoid the spread of germs. Close the lid, flush the toilet, and even wash your hands without having to touch germ-infested surfaces. Better yet, the toilet lid will automatically close. That should finally put an end to the ongoing 'seat up or down' debate that rages on in many households!
Energy Efficient, Sustainable & Eco Friendly Homes. LIFESTYLE SPECIALISTS.
There's a reason they call water 'liquid gold', and finding ways to conserve or re-use water is a great use of technology. There are new smart dishwashers that recycle water from the rinse cycle for the next wash. Low-flow shower heads and faucet aerators can reduce your home water consumption as much as 50 percent and also reduce water heating costs. Dual-flush toilets that feature two levers – one for urine and one for solid waste – and home automation technology that can shut off sprinkler systems based on weather reports are both popular options to save water. Tankless water heaters provide hot water only as needed, using about 20 percent less energy than traditional storage methods. And, of course, the classic greywater system – re-using water that goes down the sink or shower drain for other purposes such as flushing the toilet – is another great innovation that can net significant savings.

cooping a swag of awards for two luxury residential dwellings late last year, Jim the Builder has cemented his reputation within the industry as a quality craftsman who creates homes you'll never want to leave. For a family on the outskirts of Christchurch, an ultra-modern concrete bungalow has all the mod cons for the ultimate sustainable, luxury lifestyle. Complete with expansive vistas across Canterbury and the Southern Alps and equipped with fully integrated state-ofthe-art thermal and energy-efficient solutions, this home offers stylish simplicity finished to a high-end quality standard that impressed the judges. Winning half a dozen awards, including the top accolade at the Architectural Designers New Zealand Awards, two golds at the Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards, and the Master Joiners Best Kitchen Award (Ryan's Kitchens), puts Jim the Builder head and shoulders above the rest.

A stunning renovation on Sumner's waterfront took out two golds at the Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards. This quake-ravaged character bungalow was transformed beyond all recognition into a spectacular modern family home with the design
expertise of Weir Architecture and brought to fruition by the building experts at Jim the Builder. Whether it's a new build or revitalising an old home, the company's director Jim Stenberg and his team have been making dreams come true for Cantabrians for the past decade. “Our philosophy is simple,” says Jim. “We do a great job with great people, to build great homes.”

elebrating 25 years in business this year, Wisker Contracting's founder Glenn Wisker says the company has evolved and developed over the years from home decorating to full project management of renovations and new builds. Peter has expertise in plastering, having owned his own plastering company in the UK, so with their shared values and approach to business and commitment to producing quality workmanship, Glenn and Peter decided to join forces and the perfect marriage was made. It's clear to see from their extensive portfolio of luxury homes across Canterbury that they deliver exactly what they promise. Finishing your home to the

It means everyone knows what's going on, everyone is good at their job, communication is simpler, the job gets done faster, standards are consistent and everyone is happy,” explains Glenn.
