Biking through the Christchurch CBD on a balmy Sunday afternoon, it was uplifting to see so many others out and about. I waited in a long line for my Rollickin’ Gelato and had to dodge a fair few pedestrians to navigate my bike between the tram tracks and traffic queues. Sitting on the banks of the Avon enjoying my salted caramel scoop, the sun-soaked bars and restaurants of The Terrace brimmed with denizens of all ages. Perhaps it was the springtime daffodils and ducklings on display - or the sugar rush - but I couldn’t help feeling a sense of hope and possibility for our city. The hospitality sector has been one of the hardest hit during the Covid-19 pandemic, and the city’s centre has been late to flourish during the rebuild of the last decade, yet here were so many enjoying what the CBD has to offer. My mind also turned to what had unfolded that week just around the corner. Where 93 people delivered brave and touching victim impact statements in front of a man who had robbed them of so much 18-months ago on March 15. Outside of court, crowds gathered to support the Muslim community. An attempt to terrorise had only instilled greater unity. Once again, this community showed how hope prospers in Ōtautahi.

he project came about to celebrate New Zealand’s first presence in Antarctica, thanks to Sir Ed and his 23-man team building Scott Base’s first hut over 60 years ago. The virtual experience means you won’t have to face the extreme and harsh environment that Hillary did, but you will get to tour five rooms of the hut and view hundreds of artefacts. Professor Barbara Bollard from Auckland University of Technology played a huge part in getting this project up and running. “It’s one thing to read about a place or see photos, but to interactively walk around and experience it as if you are there, really cements the connection,” she says. “It creates a greater awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of these places.” Ryman Healthcare was a principal sponsor of the unique experience, and Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod says the project will bring a unique Antarctic experience to thousands of people who otherwise could not get there. “Sir Ed’s hut is part of the rich history of Antarctic exploration and we will be taking this experience to as many of our residents as we can. I am sure they are going to love it,” he says. Antarctica New Zealand and Staples VR were also supporters of the project. SOUND The wide appeal of Kiwi supergroup L.A.B is making waves here and abroad. Metropol catches up with lead guitarist and vocalist Joel Shadbolt ahead of their Christchurch show. WORDS MORGAN TAIT

.A.B, pronounced as each letter, but representative of a laboratory where pioneering ideas are cooked up, is behind one of the country’s most popular songs of the moment. The nostalgic Kiwi summertime bop, ‘In the Air’ has spent 35 weeks in the Official New Zealand Top 40 Singles chart, 33 of those in the top 10 and three as number 10 3 September, 2020 Metropol

It’s the first New Zealand number one since Lorde in 2017, the first independent single since Flight of the Conchords in 2012 and is nominated for a coveted 2020 Apra Silver Scroll song writing award. Comprised of members of some of New Zealand’s most well-known bands of recent decades, L.A.B’s five members

are Kora’s Brad and Stu Kora, Katchafire’s Ara AdamsTamatea, and Miharo Gregory, and Joel Shadbolt. Joel told Metropol how the accidental success of ‘In the Air’ has help the group – who have three albums under their belts since forming in 2017 – cement its sound. “The thing with ‘In the Air’ is none of us thought it would

be a number one hit,” he says. “It keeps growing legs with how long it’s been out and just keeps going.” The reason for that? “We think people are attaching themselves to the nostalgic sound. Lyrically, it’s about young love, it’s very much about that summer love. “Musically, it’s more of an old school song feel. It’s different

generations and when we write our music we’re conscious about doing that, too.” ‘In the Air’ is from L.A.B’s third album, which Joel sees as a turning point for the band, which he says will be further demonstrated in its fourth album due to be released this summer. “In our third album we found the groove so to speak. You can definitely hear Kora and reggae more so in the first and second albums. The third, we don’t ascribe it so much to other bands, we just hear it as L.A.B. “The sound is always evolving, but now we get to the point where we’re say that’s an L.A.B sound.” Covid-19 disrupted L.A.B’s planned Australian tour as well as shows in Auckland and Hamilton. However, once the country went from Alert Level 4 to 1, the capacity of the New Zealand shows were increased – and the concerts were the

first major events to take place amidst a global pandemic. “Because of the pandemic we’ve been able to reschedule and make the shows bigger. We went from 1000 people at the Power Station to 6000 at Spark Arena, and also ended up playing to 6000 at Cloudeland’s Arena instead of 1000 at The Factory.” They will also be headlining a number of New Zealand music festivals this summer, should they go ahead due to Covid-19. At which time, L.A.B will perform alongside other Kiwi favourites Benee, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Shapeshifter, The Upbeats, Broods, and Sola Rosa. When the band comes to Christchurch in October Joel says audiences here can expect to hear their super summer sound. • L.A.B are playing Horncastle Arena on October 31. from other music which is prominent at the moment, but it seems to resonate.” Starting life as a Kiwi reggae band, the supergroup’s sound has developed to put its blues, rock, RnB, and funk influences more centre stage. “When I hear [‘In the Air’], I hear influences from the ‘70s with the basic beat, simple guitar chords and bassline – yet when kids at school hear it, they can hear something fresh in it because it’s not what they’re used to hearing.” And it is inspiration from that era which the band is really tapping into, he says. ”The older the sound we try to come out with, the more it seems to resonate with audiences as something new. “We’re influenced by the music we were brought up on. We have really close connections with music from Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder, their music resonates with all

Discovering her skincare wasn’t safe during pregnancy sent Kiwi woman Emma Lewisham on a mission to create natural, yet powerful, products. Her eponymous range launched this year and already has a cult-like following. Metropol catches up with Emma about what it takes to create a coveted range.

conversation with her GP about fertility in 2016 changed the course of New Zealand woman Emma Lewisham’s life - and quite possibly the country’s skincare industry. “I was going through a bit of a turning point in my life, I had just lost my mother to cancer and was finding that really hard to come to terms with. She was really young, and I started to realise I was taking my own health for granted. “I started thinking, ‘I’m in my 30s now, I need to think about how I live and the things I do every day’, I was also trying and struggling to get pregnant at the

time, and so I was speaking to my GP about what I needed to consider for my general health.” When asked what skincare she was using, Emma named a heavy-hitting product she employed to help even her skin tone. “She said, ‘Stop using that right now’. It contained an ingredient which I found out was banned in Europe and Japan, but in New Zealand they still allowed the sale of it despite it having a lot of credible research behind it as a known carcinogen. “And I just thought, ‘If I couldn’t use it then, why would I use it ever?’.” The discovery of this unwitting

pay off between her health and results set Emma on a journey. “From there I knew I wanted to use more clean and natural products, so I went to pharmacies and health shops, but I was used to really high performing skincare and couldn’t find anything which would get those same results. “I didn’t accept that you either had to compromise your health for results, or compromise results for using natural products.” A global marketing executive for a Japanese tech company at the time, Emma was far removed from the science and process of creating skincare. “I didn’t have experience

producing skincare, but I had experience identifying gaps in the market and I just felt like I was onto something, and that it was going to resonate with people.” And that it did. Since launching last year, the Emma Lewisham range has gained near-instant notoriety. the world into high-performing plant-derived ingredients. To those not familiar with skincare, that may sound farfetched. But consumer interest in cosmetic skincare has skyrocketed in recent years, with the global industry projected to exceed NZD$1 trillion by 2025, according to business data platform Statista. “I was very driven to get luxury high performing products at any cost,” says Emma. “We sourced ingredients from 30 countries, and instead of focussing on two or three ingredients per product, we put up to 30 in and at up to two to four times higher concentrate than what was in the market.” Initially launching with three products (a daily moisturiser, SPF and face oil serum) two more (a serum targeting hyperpigmentation and a night cream) followed. She’s also launched Emma Lewisham Beauty Circle, where consumers can return any brand’s facial skincare packaging for recycling. And last week announced a refillable product option designed to reduce water and carbon emissions. Emma, now a mother of one who visits Christchurch frequently to see her father who lives here, credits her tenacity to strong female role models. “My grandmother, Patricia Crossett, was one of the first female CEOs of the day. “She ran her own businesses and it’s from her where I got the belief that women can do anything and how to hold my own and be confident as a female in my career.”

Shooting for the stars

By day Lucy Wyma is a prickly, troubled teen causing chaos at Shortland Street Hospital. By night she is a glamorous model, traversing runways and posing for glitzy fashion shoots.

ut it’s all in a day’s work for the striking 24-year-old Cantabrian who has been scaling the divide between acting and modelling since being scouted by Portfolio Model Agency Director Mel Radford when she was just 13-years-old. “She had that X-factor – natural beauty and maturity – something that an agent is always on the hunt for,” says Mel. “And during these past 10 years, Lucy has continued to shine.” After cutting her acting teeth on every school drama production she could, Lucy’s breakthrough role was as Ginny and Jonty’s wayward daughter Hayley Smith-Robinson on Hope and Wire, Gaylene Preston’s dramatic three-part miniseries about the Christchurch earthquake. “I was hooked!” she says of her

first experience working on a film set. But Hayley had nothing on Petra Freeth – Lucy’s Shortland Street alter ego and her most recent day job. She has, after all, turned up in the emergency department after a botched surgery in Thailand, much to the dismay of her estranged on-screen mother, conservative politician Michelle Beaufort (Lisa Chappell), the new love interest for Shortland Street alumni Chris Warner (Michael Galvin). “She’s a prickly character,” Lucy laughs. “But the most fun to play and explore, as the ‘villain’ characters often are. The people there have also been so incredible and welcoming. It’s like big crazy family, I’ve made some wonderful friends there.

“I’m enjoying every moment of it.” Whether it was singing, dancing or acting, Lucy knew she wanted to be a performer since she was about three. It seems like the sky is the only limit for this homegrown talent who was signed by the prestigious modelling agency IMG via Portfolio and its international booking agent MHI Global when she was just 20, following in the glamorous footsteps of Gisele Bundchen, Miranda Kerr and Kate Moss, who have all been signed to the international agency. If she had a comfort zone to step out of, the signing did it, with the Papanui-raised Lucy walking in Sydney’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, modelling for the likes of long standing label Stolen Girlfriend’s Club; there’s even been some magazine shoots in there – two Metropol covers included! Although she’s now based in Auckland with her acting agency, she still heads back down to Christchurch for bookings through Portfolio, such as for luxurious home fragrance brand Lyttelton Lights. But acting was always Lucy’s first love. “Both industries are challenging in their own ways and as I’ve been doing both since a fairly young age, I’ve done a lot of growing and creating of myself within them,” she explains. “They’ve allowed me to go to the most wonderful and bizarre places, and meet the most incredible people I wouldn’t have crossed paths with otherwise.” It’s acting which enables her to “play and create, and explore lives and worlds outside of my own, to then tell those stories”. Portfolio Director Mel says she sees Lucy’s star continuing to burn brightly. “I feel she will have great longevity with her modelling, which will complement her main focus and

passion of acting. “It has been so exciting and fulfilling to see how well Lucy has progressed within our industry and watching her grow and flourish from managing her as a teen, now to a beautiful and successful young woman shooting for the stars!” Making it back home to Christchurch for a regular break is a must-do for Lucy and not just when work is calling. “I love coming home; there’s something about the South Island that makes me feel like I can breathe again,” she says. “It’s been a wild roller coaster going straight from lockdown to Shorty Street, so I’m going to enjoy a visit home – do a lil’ road trip while I’m there, breathe in the South Island air, then back up to Auckland to hustle and get ready for the next adventure!”

Metropol catches up with Ali ahead of The Look of Love, where she puts her own special touch on Burt Bacharach’s hits alongside pianist Tom Rainey. LOCKDOWN HAS HAD A LARGE IMPACT ON THE ARTS SCENE IN CHRISTCHURCH, HOW HAS IT IMPACTED YOU AND HOW ARE YOU ADAPTING? “Yes, I had a lot of work postponed around the country. Fortunately, my other passion besides performing is teaching yoga and singing. I have set up a home studio called Cultivate Joy which does exactly that, teaching all ages, all abilities.”

A new app connecting elderly people to in-home care has launched in Christchurch ahead of its national rollout. Good Friends connects users to personal and specialist care from nursing to housework, gardening, companionship and home maintenance.

ood Friends, developed by retirement village group Arvida, is aimed at helping elderly people living in their own homes, says Chief Executive Bill McDonald. “The majority of Kiwis

maintain their independence regardless of age or disability. And that’s brilliant. This service ultimately encourages that independence.” Bill says the app is aimed at convenience for users, as well as their family members – who can have full visibility over what is being ordered, and its costs. However, he says the main driver is community. “Clients will be matched with local helpers - people who live and work in neighbouring areas. They will have all the necessary qualifications and experience, plus they’ll be good sorts. The kind of people that you’d be happy to have a cup of tea with and chat to.” Good Friends works by a user downloading the app, creating an account and then choosing between a Starter or Plus plan. Both plans provide remote care monitoring, inhome care services from $40 per hour, and support. The Plus plan also connects users to nursing and allied health, palliative care, disability care, and rehabilitation.

Puppy school paw-fection A passion for dogs and their good behaviour drives Sarah Ryan, Veterinary Nurse at Ourvets St Albans. With 15 years as a vet nurse under her belt, Sarah knows what makes our canine friends tick - right from puppyhood.

t Ourvets St Albans Sarah runs The Puppy Club – puppy training classes that are the equivalent of primary school for your furry new member of the family. “At puppy school I teach you how to train your puppy, but also how your puppy learns, communicates, and develops,” she says. “It is a fun and interactive course set over five lessons, where you get information, tools, tips, and tricks to ensure your puppy becomes a social, happy, and confident dog.” Sarah says the first session is an owner’s only class and then you bring your puppy to the group for the next four sessions. “We are very busy at the moment, with eight maximum per class, we have been running two to three classes with all of the pups aged between eight to sixteen weeks.” At puppy school, small canines and large humans learn basic dog obedience covering sit, drop, come, and stay; toileting; crate etiquette; digging, barking, and chewing issues, as well as socialisation. “Owners tell me they find the training really effective, and the recall command has brought back many a little escapee who is tearing across a park,” she says.

Sarah has her own dog, a gorgeous threeyear-old Border Collie called Piper who is, of course, so beautifully trained she has already ready won the beginners grade in the National Dog Obedience competition. However, for Sarah, working with Piper on dog obedience as well as a full-time vet nurse and puppy wrangler extraordinaire at

Ourvets just wasn’t quite enough. Sarah also has her own dog walking business, Pets Steps. “I walk dogs one at a time or perhaps along with Piper. If owners request it, I can train their dog on how to walk on a lead really nicely at heel. The dogs respond really positively and I’m passionate about that.”

The appeal of natural ﬁbres in the home refuses to wane, epitomised by the resurgence of rattan, cane and wicker furnishings. Playing into trending aesthetics of modern bohemian, rattan freshens up the mood of any room.

iry and durable, rattan has been used in furniture design for centuries. The climbing vine, which grows mainly in southeast Asia, can be peeled off in strands and chiselled and hammered often laboriously by hand - into flat rattan ready for weaving. Cane is from the outer part of the rattan tree and the inner core, along with bamboo, willow and raffia, is often termed wicker. While popular in the ‘70s, modern cane, rattan and wicker seldom features in full dining or lounging sets anymore – unless for outdoor furniture. Instead we’re seeing more standalone statement pieces. Think situational chairs with boxy wooden frames and webbed rattan insets, or buffet and side tables with the same style panelling. When it comes to home accents, we’re seeing baskets, bed heads, light shades, shelves, mirrors, trays and even book ends in the light organic wood composition. These vintage vibes have been making a comeback for some time, and don’t seem to be going anywhere fast – touted by Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue as decadedefining. Oft seen in the pages of the world’s most stylish magazines and in curated social media feeds paired with soft, neutral fabrics and ever-popular indoor greenery, the light wood also lends itself to being coupled with bright pops of pinks, oranges and blues. Statement or subtle, weaving rattan, wicker or cane into your décor will bring a little romanticism to any space.

Hands up, that’s right, hands up if this year has been one of the most challenging you’ve ever experienced. I’ve got my hand up, have you? We live, as we all know, in uncertain times. There’s a daily bombardment of change all around us. So, no matter what your occupation or vocation, it’s worth thinking about how to manage your levels of wellbeing and optimism as we continue travelling through 2020. Here are some of the tips that have helped me move forward personally and professionally whilst dealing with feelings of vulnerability.

Often the first thing to go in times of stress, but it’s important to maintain habits that help rather than hinder and structure provides that. Sleep, great food and exercise (whether in large or small doses) helps, especially for your mental health, and I know of many who reestablished regular exercise habits during our initial lockdown period. If you are one of these people, I hope that like me you’ve been able to keep it up.

Lighten Up Humour works, especially in the form of a good belly laugh, and I can assure you that if you watch too much television, particularly the news, you’ll notice how easy it is to lose not only your sense of humour but your sense of hope. Spend time with mates and family who want to lift your spirits, not dampen them Surround yourself with positive people. This goes without saying at one level but sometimes it’s a big ask. Seek out, especially, people who focus on solutions rather than problems … better still, try to be that person. Rather than say “I can’t do it,” try “how can we get this done?”

Language is such a powerful element and when applied in a positive manner, that power is magnified.

Let Go Finally, let stuff go, and try not to personalize every little slight. Everyone, yes everyone, is going through their own unique set of challenges and although we’re constantly reminded to be kind, it’s a new world we’re all learning to navigate. So how about it? Do your best, wear a smile and push forward.

The Market But before I sign off, let’s talk about the market. Contrary to what various experts said during and immediately after our initial lockdown period, the market hasn’t slumped and nor have prices dropped. In fact, it’s been – to reference a wellknown movie title – fast and furious! With considerable numbers of sales, even surpassing the number of sales at the same time last year, and some equally exceptional prices. There’s a palpable urgency in the marketplace, whether it’s to be sold before our elections or to purchase and settle whilst interest rates are so low. The big questions are: how long will it last, what changes are ahead and how does that translate for all the parties that are active in the market? We can be certain that we will find out in time and, whatever happens, I’ll be doing my best to remain calm, constructive and optimistic. Spring is here (at last), so let’s enjoy it!

ON THE TOOLS Make sure you’ve got the right tools at hand to help you get your garden into shape, and that they’re sharp and in good working order. Some essentials include: • A good pair of gloves to protect your hands from dirt, thorns, and splinters • Some sharp secateurs which will cut, not crush, stems • Loppers to prune harder to reach areas or thicker branches • A garden fork to turn and dig soil • A hand trowel for replanting smaller plants • A short-handled square shovel for digging holes, moving dirt, and edging

SORT OUT YOUR SOIL Just like your skin, soil can get dried out and dull over winter – so early spring is time to moisturise that dirt. Start early so beds are ready for planting once temperatures increase. Begin by adding organic material like compost or manure in an even layer, a good rule of thumb is 40L of organic matter per 2sqm of garden space, worked in thoroughly. This aerates and improves organic matter, nutrient content, and microbial activity.

SOWING THE SEED In Canterbury and the lower South Island, where our temperatures can take their time to rise, don’t risk your seeds by planting them too early. Instead, consider seeing your favourite summer plants indoors with seed trays. Some gardening gurus recommend waiting until Labour weekend to make the call on whether your summer seedings should go in the outdoor soil.

LOVE THY LAWN Showing your lawn some love now could make all the difference to whether you are enjoying some soft, full and green grass this summer. The secret? Fertilising well and often will lower the PH of the soil, which should promote the growth of your lawn - and not those pesky weeds.

Multi-prep for Multi-Use Arena WORDS MORGAN TAIT

Preparation for construction of Christchurch’s $473 million Multi-Use Arena continues, with contamination testing, utilities work, transport planning and formation of a project board underway.

onstruction of the 25,000-capacity, roofed stadium is due to begin on the site bordered by Hereford, Tuam, Madras and Barbadoes Streets in February. Until then, Christchurch City Council is working with Enable, Vodafone and Orion to plan and relocate underground services such as water, power and communications cables across the three-block site. Fibre cable hauling is already under way. Three water systems in the area are being redesigned using 3D modelling. Conflicting water mains and stormwater pipes will also be relocated from the site. Results of contamination tests are pending to inform if any asbestos, fuel and coal tar need to be removed from the site and enable a tender to be developed. A transport assessment is also being completed to diagnose and mitigate any impacts on pedestrians, cyclists, public transport and private vehicles by scheduled works. Land Information New Zealand is clearing buildings from the site, and the project board is being formed. Murray Strong – who chaired the steering groups for Te Pae, the bus interchange and Metro Sports Facility – has been named as chair. Christchurch City Council has allocated $253 million to the Canterbury Multi-Use Arena, and the Crown has approved $220 million towards the project from the Christchurch Regeneration Acceleration Fund. The stadium will host sporting and music events when completed, which is estimated to be 2024.

While we are brushing, flossing and probably gargling when was the last time you had a check-up? If it’s over a year, it’s time to book. And remember, prevention is better than cure. At the heart of the programme is the establishment of two high growth business incubators which staircase from one to the other as the ventures develop. This ‘all of city’ approach is underwritten by ChristchurchNZ’s two agreements; one with Ara Institute of Canterbury (Ara) and Ministry of Awesome through the Te Ōhaka – Centre for Growth & Innovation and the other with University of Canterbury (UC) Business School. The partnership provides targeted support for high growth businesses and includes incubation programmes, innovation challenges, business mentoring and access to investor and commercial networks. One of the pleasing aspects of our work delivering anchor projects for Christchurch is the positive impact on suppliers. We’re spending over $10m a month in the city at the moment. We’ve profiled some of those suppliers in recent in-house video updates. Local company, John Jones Steel is producing 4500 tonnes of fabricated steelwork for the large Metro Sports Facility. It’s the biggest project in the company’s 50-year history and will keep them busy for a year. John Jones Steel notes that their staff and families look forward to swimming in the competition and leisure pools, and playing on the court and other facilities, making it a special project for them. That steel is being hoisted into place by Titan Cranes, which has three of the largest cranes ever used in New Zealand on-site, including a massive 500-tonne crawler crane especially imported for the project. I’m with one of the crane operators who notes excitedly: “You’re never too old to ride a hydroslide!” But it’s not just the large companies that benefit from these projects. Remarkable Surfaces, a small family business based at Wigram, is spray painting the 487 gilded boxes that compose the ceiling design in the vast banquet room at the Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre. This is the largest project that Remarkable Surfaces has ever undertaken, and they are indeed doing a remarkable job. With Covid-19, these are challenging times to be delivering major construction projects. We look forward to having them completed for the enjoyment and benefit of us all.

I recently ran a place-making event called the Winter Fun Chill in the City for the Central City Business Association. We received great support from the locals and a wide range of citywide businesses enabling us to offer the central city as a platform where their brands could grow. It was hugely successful and in the main its success was due to people working together to achieve a common goal. We partnered with the Christchurch City Mission and raised over $13,000 to help support the great work they do with our most vulnerable people. We live in very interesting times and we have not yet seen the full impact of how our post Covid-19 world is going to shape up. One thing is for sure, together we are stronger and I have been really heartened by the way our people have been out supporting our local businesses. Maybe, just maybe, we can avert a real crisis by continuing to support our own, as we have seen in the last few months since our economy has reopened. Interestingly enough, with travel restrictions the way they are, you start to revisit your own backyard for those seasonal getaways and you realise that we live in a great country. I am certainly looking forward to seeing more of what our country has on offer and spreading the love around other parts of Aotearoa.

hen it comes to buying or selling a home, drains are not necessarily something many of us consider. However, as Josh Mackey, owner of MHR Drainage, explains—damaged drains are a constant problem for both buyers and sellers in the greater Christchurch area. “Following the earthquakes, we were flat out doing emergency drainage repairs,” he says. “These repairs — which were only ever designed to be temporary — may well be failing now. The allocation was announced by Under-Secretary for Regional Economic Development Fletcher Tabuteau, who said: “While Covid-19 has had an impact on international tourist numbers, we want to support Hanmer Springs to continue to be a top family friendly tourist draw card for domestic visitors from both the North and South islands. It is expected the fly-line, an 850m-long, gravity-powered flying fox-type structure, will be completed by Spring 2021 and create up to 25 new jobs with $4 million of economic benefit generated to the region over the first five years of operation. The thermal pools and spa expansion involves investigating the construction of a luxury day spa on the site of the former Queen Mary Hospital and the provision of a new area of hot pools and a new hydroslide.

he Old Government Building in Cathedral Square has long been an epochal architectural addition to Canterburyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cityscape. Beginning life, as the name suggests, as home to several government departments when it opened in August 1913, the building has lived several lives in its 107 years. It was designed by

renowned architect Joseph Clarkson Maddison in a grand Italian Renaissance Palazzo style, which was typical for official buildings built in New Zealand in the late Victorian and early Edwardian years. The style was seen to project an impression of authority to signify the power of the state.

condition it was earthquake strengthened. That condition - completed as part of the building’s conversion into luxury hotel suites under the Heritage Christchurch brand - likely saved the building. The Heritage Christchurch opened in 1996, and the strengthening works made it one of the only heritage buildings in the CBD still standing after the Canterbury earthquakes. Maddison was known for designing many large scale and brickwork buildings in the city, including the original Ballantynes and Carlton buildings, as well as several churches and large industrial factories in wider Canterbury. The foundation stone of the Old Government Building was laid by then-Prime Minister Sir Joseph G Ward in 1911, who told the gathered crowds they should be proud to have such a building of character “suitable to the importance of the city”. The building housed various government departments until the 1980s when occupants moved to other newer offices, and the beautiful building fell into serious disrepair. Public outcry saved it from demolition, and Christchurch City Council purchased the building from the central government for $735,000 in 1991. It was then on-sold to high profile Aucklandbased property developers, Symphony Group, for a profit of over $6 million, and on the

he EQC $300m policy for homeowners of over-cap on-sold properties in Canterbury enabled affected homeowners to apply for an ex gratia Government payment to have their homes repaired. The payment was also available if the same owners had the home, but believed the repairs done post-earthquakes were not satisfactory, or overlooked levelling.
