In a state of evolution, the Garden City’s architectural typology is nothing short of distinct. New building facades are playing with eye catching angles, colours and materials – a welcome digression from the archetypal concrete and stone buildings previously adopted in the city, as we usher in a new era of urban architecture.

Biking through the Christchurch CBD on a balmy Sunday afternoon, it was uplifting to see so many others out and about. I waited in a long line for my Rollickin’ Gelato and had to dodge a fair few pedestrians to navigate my bike between the tram tracks and traffic queues. Sitting on the banks of the Avon enjoying my salted caramel scoop, the sun-soaked bars and restaurants of The Terrace brimmed with denizens of all ages. Perhaps it was the springtime daffodils and ducklings on display - or the sugar rush - but I couldn’t help feeling a sense of hope and possibility for our city. The hospitality sector has been one of the hardest hit during the Covid-19 pandemic, and the city’s centre has been late to flourish during the rebuild of the last decade, yet here were so many enjoying what the CBD has to offer. My mind also turned to what had unfolded that week just around the corner. Where 93 people delivered brave and touching victim impact statements in front of a man who had robbed them of so much 18-months ago on March 15. Outside of court, crowds gathered to support the Muslim community. An attempt to terrorise had only instilled greater unity. Once again, this community showed how hope prospers in Ōtautahi.

he project came about to celebrate New Zealand’s first presence in Antarctica, thanks to Sir Ed and his 23-man team building Scott Base’s first hut over 60 years ago. The virtual experience means you won’t have to face the extreme and harsh environment that Hillary did, but you will get to tour five rooms of the hut and view hundreds of artefacts. Professor Barbara Bollard from Auckland University of Technology played a huge part in getting this project up and running. “It’s one thing to read about a place or see photos, but to interactively walk around and experience it as if you are there, really cements the connection,” she says. “It creates a greater awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of these places.” Ryman Healthcare was a principal sponsor of the unique experience, and Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod says the project will bring a unique Antarctic experience to thousands of people who otherwise could not get there. “Sir Ed’s hut is part of the rich history of Antarctic exploration and we will be taking this experience to as many of our residents as we can. I am sure they are going to love it,” he says. Antarctica New Zealand and Staples VR were also supporters of the project. Put your explorer gear on and take a tour of the hut yourself, through the Antarctic Heritage Trust’s app and the gaming platform Steam.

SUPER SUMMER

L
.A.B, pronounced as each letter, but representative of a laboratory where pioneering ideas are cooked up, is behind one of the country’s most popular songs of the moment. The nostalgic Kiwi summertime bop, ‘In the Air’ has spent 35 weeks in the Official New Zealand Top 40 Singles chart, 33 of those in the top 10 and three as number 10 3 September, 2020 Metropol
one. It’s the first New Zealand number one since Lorde in 2017, the first independent single since Flight of the Conchords in 2012 and is nominated for a coveted 2020 Apra Silver Scroll song writing award. Comprised of members of some of New Zealand’s most well-known bands of recent decades, L.A.B’s five members
are Kora’s Brad and Stu Kora, Katchafire’s Ara AdamsTamatea, and Miharo Gregory, and Joel Shadbolt. Joel told Metropol how the accidental success of ‘In the Air’ has help the group – who have three albums under their belts since forming in 2017 – cement its sound. “The thing with ‘In the Air’ is none of us thought it would
be a number one hit,” he says. “It keeps growing legs with how long it’s been out and just keeps going.” The reason for that? “We think people are attaching themselves to the nostalgic sound. Lyrically, it’s about young love, it’s very much about that summer love. “Musically, it’s more of an old school song feel. It’s different

generations and when we write our music we’re conscious about doing that, too.” ‘In the Air’ is from L.A.B’s third album, which Joel sees as a turning point for the band, which he says will be further demonstrated in its fourth album due to be released this summer. “In our third album we found the groove so to speak. You can definitely hear Kora and reggae more so in the first and second albums. The third, we don’t ascribe it so much to other bands, we just hear it as L.A.B. “The sound is always evolving, but now we get to the point where we’re say that’s an L.A.B sound.” Covid-19 disrupted L.A.B’s planned Australian tour as well as shows in Auckland and Hamilton. However, once the country went from Alert Level 4 to 1, the capacity of the New Zealand shows were increased – and the concerts were the
first major events to take place amidst a global pandemic. “Because of the pandemic we’ve been able to reschedule and make the shows bigger. We went from 1000 people at the Power Station to 6000 at Spark Arena, and also ended up playing to 6000 at Cloudeland’s Arena instead of 1000 at The Factory.” They will also be headlining a number of New Zealand music festivals this summer, should they go ahead due to Covid-19. At which time, L.A.B will perform alongside other Kiwi favourites Benee, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Shapeshifter, The Upbeats, Broods, and Sola Rosa. When the band comes to Christchurch in October Joel says audiences here can expect to hear their super summer sound. • L.A.B are playing Horncastle Arena on October 31. Discovering her skincare wasn’t safe during pregnancy sent Kiwi woman Emma Lewisham on a mission to create natural, yet powerful, products. Her eponymous range launched this year and already has a cult-like following. Metropol catches up with Emma about what it takes to create a coveted range.
A
conversation with her GP about fertility in 2016 changed the course of New Zealand woman Emma Lewisham’s life - and quite possibly the country’s skincare industry. “I was going through a bit of a turning point in my life, I had just lost my mother to cancer and was finding that really hard to come to terms with. She was really young, and I started to realise I was taking my own health for granted. “I started thinking, ‘I’m in my 30s now, I need to think about how I live and the things I do every day’, I was also trying and struggling to get pregnant at the

time, and so I was speaking to my GP about what I needed to consider for my general health.” When asked what skincare she was using, Emma named a heavy-hitting product she employed to help even her skin tone. “She said, ‘Stop using that right now’. It contained an ingredient which I found out was banned in Europe and Japan, but in New Zealand they still allowed the sale of it despite it having a lot of credible research behind it as a known carcinogen. “And I just thought, ‘If I couldn’t use it then, why would I use it ever?’.” The discovery of this unwitting
pay off between her health and results set Emma on a journey. “From there I knew I wanted to use more clean and natural products, so I went to pharmacies and health shops, but I was used to really high performing skincare and couldn’t find anything which would get those same results. “I didn’t accept that you either had to compromise your health for results, or compromise results for using natural products.” A global marketing executive for a Japanese tech company at the time, Emma was far removed from the science and process of creating skincare. “I didn’t have experience

Since launching last year, the Emma Lewisham range has gained near-instant notoriety. Featured in top Australasian lifestyle magazines like Harper’s Bazaar, Viva, Remix, Mindfood, Mamamia, and on The Spinoff’s Business is Boring podcast, as well as influential blogs like The Twenties Club. It’s also a favourite of Kiwi Victoria’s Secret model Georgia Fowler, her also-a-model sister, Kate, and fellow New Zealandborn, Aussie-based model, Eden Bristowe. But developing a coveted skincare range doesn’t just happen overnight - it took three years of research and development and a team of scientists to bring her vision to life. the world into high-performing plant-derived ingredients. To those not familiar with skincare, that may sound farfetched. But consumer interest in cosmetic skincare has skyrocketed in recent years, with the global industry projected to exceed NZD$1 trillion by 2025, according to business data platform Statista. “I was very driven to get luxury high performing products at any cost,” says Emma. “We sourced ingredients from 30 countries, and instead of focussing on two or three ingredients per product, we put up to 30 in and at up to two to four times higher concentrate than what was in the market.” Initially launching with three products (a daily moisturiser, SPF and face oil serum) two more (a serum targeting hyperpigmentation and a night cream) followed. She’s also launched Emma Lewisham Beauty Circle, where consumers can return any brand’s facial skincare packaging for recycling. And last week announced a refillable product option designed to reduce water and carbon emissions. Emma, now a mother of one who visits Christchurch frequently to see her father who lives here, credits her tenacity to strong female role models. “My grandmother, Patricia Crossett, was one of the first female CEOs of the day. “She ran her own businesses and it’s from her where I got the belief that women can do anything and how to hold my own and be confident as a female in my career.”

ut it’s all in a day’s work for the striking 24-year-old Cantabrian who has been scaling the divide between acting and modelling since being scouted by Portfolio Model Agency Director Mel Radford when she was just 13-years-old. “She had that X-factor – natural beauty and maturity – something that an agent is always on the hunt for,” says Mel. “And during these past 10 years, Lucy has continued to shine.” After cutting her acting teeth on every school drama production she could, Lucy’s breakthrough role was as Ginny and Jonty’s wayward daughter Hayley Smith-Robinson on Hope and Wire, Gaylene Preston’s dramatic three-part miniseries about the Christchurch earthquake. “I was hooked!” she says of her
first experience working on a film set. But Hayley had nothing on Petra Freeth – Lucy’s Shortland Street alter ego and her most recent day job. She has, after all, turned up in the emergency department after a botched surgery in Thailand, much to the dismay of her estranged on-screen mother, conservative politician Michelle Beaufort (Lisa Chappell), the new love interest for Shortland Street alumni Chris Warner (Michael Galvin). “She’s a prickly character,” Lucy laughs. “But the most fun to play and explore, as the ‘villain’ characters often are. The people there have also been so incredible and welcoming. It’s like big crazy family, I’ve made some wonderful friends there.

“I’m enjoying every moment of it.” Whether it was singing, dancing or acting, Lucy knew she wanted to be a performer since she was about three. It seems like the sky is the only limit for this homegrown talent who was signed by the prestigious modelling agency IMG via Portfolio and its international booking agent MHI Global when she was just 20, following in the glamorous footsteps of Gisele Bundchen, Miranda Kerr and Kate Moss, who have all been signed to the international agency. If she had a comfort zone to step out of, the signing did it, with the Papanui-raised Lucy walking in Sydney’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, modelling for the likes of long standing label Stolen Girlfriend’s Club; there’s even been some magazine shoots in there – two Metropol covers included! Although she’s now based in Auckland with her acting agency, she still heads back down to Christchurch for bookings through Portfolio, such as for luxurious home fragrance brand Lyttelton Lights. But acting was always Lucy’s first love. “Both industries are challenging in their own ways and as I’ve been doing both since a fairly young age, I’ve done a lot of growing and creating of myself within them,” she explains. “They’ve allowed me to go to the most wonderful and bizarre places, and meet the most incredible people I wouldn’t have crossed paths with otherwise.” It’s acting which enables her to “play and create, and explore lives and worlds outside of my own, to then tell those stories”. Portfolio Director Mel says she sees Lucy’s star continuing to burn brightly. “I feel she will have great longevity with her modelling, which will complement her main focus and
passion of acting. “It has been so exciting and fulfilling to see how well Lucy has progressed within our industry and watching her grow and flourish from managing her as a teen, now to a beautiful and successful young woman shooting for the stars!” Making it back home to Christchurch for a regular break is a must-do for Lucy and not just when work is calling. “I love coming home; there’s something about the South Island that makes me feel like I can breathe again,” she says. “It’s been a wild roller coaster going straight from lockdown to Shorty Street, so I’m going to enjoy a visit home – do a lil’ road trip while I’m there, breathe in the South Island air, then back up to Auckland to hustle and get ready for the next adventure!”

What we all need now... Award-winning Christchurch singer Ali Harper’s concerts are synonymous with uplifting locals in hard times, and her latest show is no different. Metropol catches up with Ali ahead of The Look of Love, where she puts her own special touch on Burt Bacharach’s hits alongside pianist Tom Rainey. WHAT IS IT ABOUT BURT BACHRACH’S MUSIC WHICH RESONATES WITH YOU? “Burt’s music is brave, inspiring, creatively exquisite and abundantly beautiful values I greatly admire. He spent a large part of his career writing about moments in
history that were particularly troubling. His music has been, and continues to be, a tonic for so many.”
YOUR WORK IS CLOSELY LINKED TO UPLIFTING THE PEOPLE OF CHRISTCHURCH, AND BURT BACHARACH’S SONGS HAVE LONG BEEN A SALVE FOR TROUBLED TIMES. TELL US WHAT PARALLELS YOU DRAW BETWEEN HIS WORK AND CANTERBURY’S OWN STORIES OF RESILIENCE – ESPECIALLY IN THESE PANDEMIC TIMES. “The sense of community and family has never been stronger. We discovered our own special ‘bubbles’ in those months in lockdown which gave us a new sense of gratitude for what we have and what is truly important. We have faced challenges as a city ten years
ago with the earthquakes and last year with the Mosque shootings which shook us both physically and emotionally. Now as we face another upheaval, this show really could not have come at a better time. It’s as if the Bacharach anthem ‘What the World Needs Now’ was written for 2020 not 55-years ago.”
WHAT CAN AUDIENCES EXPECT FROM YOUR SHOWS? “With all my concerts I really enjoy taking that fourth wall down and inviting the audience in as if they are in my living room. It’s like meeting old friends again and making new ones. Because Burt’s music is so wellknown, I know everyone will be smiling and feeling those waves of nostalgia right from the opener.”
LOCKDOWN HAS HAD A LARGE IMPACT ON THE ARTS SCENE IN CHRISTCHURCH, HOW HAS IT IMPACTED YOU AND HOW ARE YOU ADAPTING? “Yes, I had a lot of work postponed around the country. Fortunately, my other passion besides performing is teaching yoga and singing. I have set up a home studio called Cultivate Joy which does exactly that, teaching all ages, all abilities.”
YOU’VE BEEN PERFORMING FOR MORE THAN 25 YEARS IN NEW ZEALAND AND ABROAD, WHAT KEEPS FUELLING YOUR PASSION FOR YOUR CRAFT? “Connecting with people and giving not only myself the platform to express myself, share stories and honour the great artists I adore, but to allow people to escape, to reminisce and have a fabulous experience in the theatre. Something I, with so many, will never take for granted again.”

App-solute in home care WORDS MORGAN TAIT
A new app connecting elderly people to in-home care has launched in Christchurch ahead of its national rollout. Good Friends connects users to personal and specialist care from nursing to housework, gardening, companionship and home maintenance.
G
ood Friends, developed by retirement village group Arvida, is aimed at helping elderly people living in their own homes, says Chief Executive Bill McDonald. “The majority of Kiwis
maintain their independence regardless of age or disability. And that’s brilliant. This service ultimately encourages that independence.” Bill says the app is aimed at convenience for users, as well as their family members – who can have full visibility over what is being ordered, and its costs. However, he says the main driver is community. “Clients will be matched with local helpers - people who live and work in neighbouring areas. They will have all the necessary qualifications and experience, plus they’ll be good sorts. The kind of people that you’d be happy to have a cup of tea with and chat to.” Good Friends works by a user downloading the app, creating an account and then choosing between a Starter or Plus plan. Both plans provide remote care monitoring, inhome care services from $40 per hour, and support. The Plus plan also connects users to nursing and allied health, palliative care, disability care, and rehabilitation.

Help!
How should I manage my investments during a global pandemic?!
ALISTAIR BEAN
One of the keys to successful financial portfolio management is to ensure you are treated as an individual and not boxed in as just another number. Authorised Financial Adviser Alistair Bean tells Metropol why this approach is especially vital in uncertain times.
WHY SHOULD I HAVE AN INDIVIDUALISED INVESTMENT PLAN PREPARED BY A FINANCIAL ADVISER? “More than just completing a series of fact finding and risk profile documents for your available lump sum, it’s about getting to know and truly understand you, your family, your trust, business or charity to discover how we can best help you meet your short, medium and longer-term goals and needs.”
DOESN’T IT TAKE TIME TO BUILD TRUST WITH AN ADVISER? “I always tell my clients it may take some time to build a level of client-adviser trust, but any of my long-term clients will attest to how investing with Alistair Bean & Associates – Financial Advisers has helped them meet their life goals. I’ve been told authorising me to “make decisions so I don’t have to” was the best decision they ever made. I love hearing tales of how we’ve helped put
children and grandchildren through school; buy new properties, cars, family holidays, and provided income for retirement. Clients are part of my family and doing our best to ensure the meeting of financial goals is my priority.”
WHAT DOES AN INDIVIDUALISED INVESTMENT PLAN INVOLVE? “Among many other valuable things, you will be presented with initial investment recommendations for your available funds. These should reflect the current economic and market information available in New Zealand and overseas at the time and be used as a starting point.”
IF MY ADVISER HAS TOLD ME WHAT TO DO WITH MY AVAILABLE LUMP SUM, THEN WHY DON’T I JUST DO THIS MYSELF? “This is where the rubber actually hits the road and where your financial adviser makes a difference! While funds should be allocated to the short, medium, and longer-
term, as we are seeing in the current Covid-19 environment and many previous crisis situations - the whole world can spin on a ten-cent piece. Your financial adviser’s highest skills are employed here to adapt your investment portfolio as changes occur.”
WHAT KIND OF RECOMMENDATIONS MIGHT BE MADE? “Your adviser’s actions will include ensuring you have enough funds to see you through a crisis. This used to be three months, but I now recommend a minimum of one year’s expenses. “Then, ensuring you have medium-term funds for things like home improvements, family assistance, car, and appliance upgrades. And finally, for longer-term nest-egg and retirement provisions. Your financial adviser will keep an eye on your funds and adjust as appropriate to the current conditions. This could include keeping your investments exactly where they are or moving them somewhere deemed more beneficial.”

Empathy earns confidence “Her empathy with clients is impressive at a time when they may be under a great deal of stress and grief,” says Pam Wheeler and Robyn Loversidge, directors of Pegasus Bay Law. They are referring to their firm’s Associate, Angela MacMillan, and her work in Estates Management, a very important aspect of the law practice’s service.
E
state management is the process of carrying out a person’s wishes as set out in their will, obtaining legal authority to act on behalf of the deceased and making sure their assets are distributed as smoothly and efficiently as possible. Before joining Pegasus Law eighteen months ago as a Legal Executive, Angela had had extensive previous experience in the field of Estate Management and Trusts – some twenty years in fact – in both private legal practices and for a trustee company. “Angela is a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Legal Executives and she has made a speciality of Estate Management,” says Pam and Robyn.
“She derives a great deal of satisfaction from helping people through what might be a difficult situation and bringing an estate to a close. “There can sometimes be tricky issues to work through with estates requiring a lot of tact. It’s very important for clients to have confidence that the practitioner who is advising them about such personal matters knows what they are doing. Angela most certainly does, and we are very lucky to have her on our team,” they say. Angela can also assist clients with wills and powers of attorney. Puppy school paw-fection A passion for dogs and their good behaviour drives Sarah Ryan, Veterinary Nurse at Ourvets St Albans. With 15 years as a vet nurse under her belt, Sarah knows what makes our canine friends tick - right from puppyhood.
A
t Ourvets St Albans Sarah runs The Puppy Club – puppy training classes that are the equivalent of primary school for your furry new member of the family. “At puppy school I teach you how to train your puppy, but also how your puppy learns, communicates, and develops,” she says. “It is a fun and interactive course set over five lessons, where you get information, tools, tips, and tricks to ensure your puppy becomes a social, happy, and confident dog.” Sarah says the first session is an owner’s only class and then you bring your puppy to the group for the next four sessions. “We are very busy at the moment, with eight maximum per class, we have been running two to three classes with all of the pups aged between eight to sixteen weeks.” At puppy school, small canines and large humans learn basic dog obedience covering sit, drop, come, and stay; toileting; crate etiquette; digging, barking, and chewing issues, as well as socialisation. “Owners tell me they find the training really effective, and the recall command has brought back many a little escapee who is tearing across a park,” she says.
Sarah has her own dog, a gorgeous threeyear-old Border Collie called Piper who is, of course, so beautifully trained she has already ready won the beginners grade in the National Dog Obedience competition. However, for Sarah, working with Piper on dog obedience as well as a full-time vet nurse and puppy wrangler extraordinaire at
Ourvets just wasn’t quite enough. Sarah also has her own dog walking business, Pets Steps. “I walk dogs one at a time or perhaps along with Piper. If owners request it, I can train their dog on how to walk on a lead really nicely at heel. The dogs respond really positively and I’m passionate about that.”

n a time where people may be examining extravagant purchases, more attention is being paid to the classic and versatile. Which could be why some designers are revisiting styles from eras past. Gucci, for example, has come back with its iconic Jackie – often seen on Jackie Kennedy in the ‘60s. The popular half-moon shape reminiscent elsewhere, like Kiwi label Saben’s Lulu. Natural materials, like raffia, are a summer favourite for obvious, beach-related reasons, and the SS20 shows saw its re-emergence in more refined, elevated styles by the likes of Celine, Prada and Valentino. Australian minimalist heroes, St Agni, have the beautiful Rada woven tote which delivers the perfect measures of polished and relaxed. Size-wise, anything goes. From oversized totes to practical cross body creations, like Yu Mei’s Luci bag designed for a phone, Eftpos card and little else, right down to Yves Saint Laurent’s teeny tiny ear bud-only case. When it comes to colour, embrace the bold palettes coming through – or, if monochrome is more your bag, consider a texture to add a little character.

WHAT IS PROFHILO?
beauty
“It’s an injectable with a high concentration of a special hybrid hyaluronic acid, but it’s different to derma fillers because it is very stable, and it spreads throughout the face stimulating the cells to produce collagen and elastin. This gives the skin a tightness and elasticity in a way I haven’t seen with other injectables.”
WHY IS IT GETTING SO MUCH HYPE?
The anti-aging treatment everyone’s buzzing about
Profhilo is receiving increasing hype around the world for its anti-aging affects. Transform Clinic owner Jenny Little tells Metropol why the Christchurch clinic has been offering the non-surgical treatment for more than a year.

“A few reasons. Mainly the effects! It makes the skin look smoother, firmer, supple, hydrated, clearer and more radiant. It’s amazing for making the skin look glowy and gorgeous. “It is also BDDE-free [used in safe quantities to stabilise a number of derma fillers] so it appeals to people who don’t want synthetic chemicals in their products.”
WHERE DO YOU GET PROFHILO, AND HOW OFTEN? “It can be done on the face, but it is also used on the neck and décolletage, hands and arms. A lot of our customers use it on their face and neck. “You have one treatment, and then a month later have another treatment. People rarely need a third treatment. Then it can be repeated every six to 12-months to maintain the effect.”
WHO IS PROFHILO FOR? “It’s primarily for people with aging skin, but younger people who are starting to see signs of aging can use it too for prevention.” Enquire about Profhilo at the Transform Clinic on (03) 343 2880 or via enquiries@2lookgood.co.nz. www.2lookgood.co.nz
Profhilo® taking years off aging skin Profhilo® is a new type of cosmetic injectable that we have been using at Transform for the past year with outstanding results. It is different to botulinum toxin and dermal fillers. Profhilo® helps tighten and moisturise lax skin. Profhilo® is a cell mediator that stimulates your elastin and collagen production. A quick and easy treatment, aimed at the lower face, neck, hands and even the sagging skin of the arms. We have an experienced team of doctors and experienced nurses to administer our procedures.

health WHAT IS HOLISTIC DENTISTRY?
A balanced approach At one Christchurch dental clinic, dentistry has evolved to a technologydriven art from. Metropol catches up with trailblazing holistic dentist Dr David Kao from Christchurch Boutique Dental about his craft.
“Holistic dentistry is how I describe our philosophy. It’s a balanced approach, we consider the whole form and function of a client’s teeth, jaw and face to inform what we do. “Not only do we apply our knowledge of the medical science behind dentistry, but we use cuttingedge technology and our specialist expertise so our work not only improves oral health, but it gives clients a precise and natural cosmetic result, too.”
TELL US ABOUT YOUR USE OF A MICROSCOPE IN YOUR WORK. “We use cutting-edge microscopic technology to deliver design-guided, natural results. The microscope allows us to create results 20 times more
precise than the naked human eye can register, whether that’s sealing a root canal, perfecting a crown, bridge or veneer, or grafting tissue. “We also use digital photo and video scanning and modelling technology for everything from modelling tooth implants to cosmetic smile design.”
WHAT KIND OF TREATMENTS DO BOUTIQUE DENTAL DO? “We know the connection between facial aesthetics and dentistry performance is important. So, as well as a full range of dental procedures – fillings, crowns, bridges, periodontal, root canals, gum and oral surgery, and implants – we also offer cosmetic dentistry including Invisalign, digital smile design, teeth whitening, veneers, dermal fillers and Botox.”

It’s the battle of the undertones; cool vs warm. In this battle, you want to make sure you know what side you’re on. V for Hair Master Stylist Vicki OgdenO’Fee gives the low down on how to embrace grey and silver hair, based on your skin undertones.
Vicki says warm undertones mean your skin will be either peachy, yellow or golden and if you have cool undertones, your skin will lean towards pinks, reds, or blues.

SO, WHAT? Embracing natural silvers and greys as they come through is trending, but Vicki says pulling off this look can depend on how your skin undertones pair to the silver and grey tones in your hair.
THE VERDICT If you are warm toned and going grey, Vicki says more neutral toned silvers may be your match. If you’re on the cool undertone side, she says a true silver could be for you.

The secret life of dentures Merivale Denture Clinic Senior Clinician Thomas Gu tells Metropol how the process of treatment through to creating high quality dentures lies in the expert combination of science, art and engineering.
T
om’s treatment for providing good dentures begins with a thorough oral exam, discussion and diagnosis, which he kicks off with a free no-obligation consultation.
“I spend a lot of time listening to my clients’ history of dental issues to identify and fix the root cause of the problem.” Tom ensures all his patients know exactly what is possible
and what the limitations may be, without sugar coating the situation, so he can provide the best options that are unique to each individual and their circumstances.
Tom’s vast and varied career began at the University of Otago Faculty of Dentistry where he specialised in various scopes of practice including implant supported removable dentures, conventional full dentures, partial dentures, metal substructures, flexible dentures and orthodontics. He was the senior technician leading these various departments. After his university career, Tom has practiced privately, which means his experience ranges from treating complex hospital grade cases through to cosmetically oriented private cases. Tom and his team use a combination of the latest technology and extensive specialised experience and skills to craft customised dentures. This technology includes an IvoBase Injector unit, E4 digital scanner, Asiga 3D printer, and computer aided design with 3Shape software (pictured). High quality dentures improve physical health as well as mental well-being by restoring your ability to eat better, giving you a beautiful smile and improving your quality of life. www.merivaledentureclinic.co.nz

If the shoe fits… Putting your feet first means choosing shoes that combine function with fashion. The Shoe Room does just that. Recently opened in Upper Riccarton, The Shoe Room is a footwear store like no other. Metropol catches up with Podiatrist Charlotte Russell - who established the venture - to find out why. WHY IS THE SHOE ROOM DIFFERENT AND WHY IS THIS DIFFERENCE IMPORTANT?
DO YOU NEED A PRE-EXISTING INJURY OR ISSUE TO VISIT THE SHOE ROOM?
“My patients at Feet First Podiatry were looking for footwear that was functional but also fun, funky and fashionable. I’ve personally selected each shoe in the store for the features offered; be it extra width, depth for hammer toes, or room to accommodate orthotics.”
“No, not at all. Part of our mission is to educate our customers that proper footwear is an investment in wellbeing. A good shoe offers support, cushioning and allday comfort. Different feet have different needs, depending on your occupation, foot shape and any other issues. We stock a sizeable range of brands and styles that can accommodate these different requirements. So even if you don’t have ‘problem’ feet now, let’s keep it that way! Visit The Shoe Room at 3/355 Riccarton Road for fashionable functional footwear and fabulous service.”
WHY VISIT THE SHOE ROOM? “I train the team in footwear fitting. We pride ourselves on knowing our stock, so if you have a specific problem, we can offer suggestions to accommodate this. Individualised fittings are a key part of the approach as our team ensure your shoes fit properly, offer great comfort and look great, too.”

Mindful Beauty WORDS MELINDA COLLINS
Mindful beauty is a new trend that will get you glowing inside and out. We show you how to embrace the trend which is as much about calming the mind as it is about cleansing the skin.
M
indful beauty is a meeting point between skincare and self-care, representing beauty rituals which calm the mind, cleanse the skin and offer a little bit of me-time. Rather than a quick slap
and dash of applying your products, mindful beauty is about slowing down and being in the moment with mindful gestures, breathing techniques and meditation. Mindful beauty is the
intent to honour and centre yourself through your beauty routine and has unsurprisingly picked up momentum in recent months as people look for at-home ways to steel themselves against uncertainty. The benefits of meditation and mindfulness are known to relieve stress, improve sleep and even alleviate some symptoms of medical conditions – so why not incorporate these principles into something you’re already doing? When approaching mindful beauty, you’ll need two things: products and technique. So let’s start with products. This is easy – it can be anything you already use, like cleansers, masks, moisturisers or mists and relaxing bath and body favourites like soaks, bath and body oils, body and hand
creams. Some recommend aromatherapy-infused products like those featuring lavender, rose or frankincense, but it’s not a must… …Because it’s how you use them that counts! Schedule in a time, pick some of your favourite products, light some candles and lather up! Focus completely on what you’re doing, and when your mind wanders, simply acknowledge the thoughts, let them float past and gently turn your attention back to the task at hand. Whether you incorporate mindful beauty to unwind at the end of the day or set yourself up for the day with a moment of calm before the storm, it might just be time to start taking a mindful approach to beauty. It will have you looking and feeling your best.

full body health check? Why a
WHAT IS A MARVEL HEALTH SCAN? “Our understanding of healthcare is that we need to discover in detail the causes of an illness before it can be adequately treated. And because the human body is one whole system and not compartmentalised into separate areas, we understand that a symptom presenting in an area of the body may
At Marvel Health, your healthcare starts with a full-body screening. The screening examines the whole body to detect possible diseases and the likely causes. Marvel Health CoFounder Tiamara Williams explains.
not necessarily arise from that area. “For example, a complaint of chest pain may not originate from the heart. The pain could be from a lung infection or acid reflux caused by a hyper acidic stomach. It could also be from chest muscle pain. The best way to detect the actual cause without guesswork is from a comprehensive diagnostic scan of the entire body.”
“The Marvel Health Scan reads and interprets bio magnetic signals from human cells to reveal the ongoing problems occurring and future complications. With this information, doctors can now plan a targeted regenerative and preventive healthcare program. “After the scan, you will have a 30-minute consultation with a Marvel Health doctor to explain your report and make recommendations for your therapy. Our doctors recommend science-based natural medicines. These are natural compounds that are backed by peer-reviewed scientific and clinical studies.”
WHAT ARE BODY SYSTEMS? “A remarkable aspect of the Marvel Health Scan is that it presents in the report the weakest or most dysfunctional three systems in the body. And our protocol is to recommend the essential compounds that target these systems. “The scan organises
the human body into nine systems, and the three weakest systems identified are strong pointers to the regions of the body that require support. “And the support from Marvel will be in the form of recommended supplements and personalised lifestyle advice.”
WHAT IS A LIFESTYLE REVIEW? “In addition to the 30-minute consultation with a doctor, our patients have a 30-minute Lifestyle Review consultation with a Marvel Health Specialist. “The consultation aims to explore the factors in your environment that may be contributing to your current health state or even cause illnesses in future. “During the consultation, you will answer a comprehensive questionnaire about your lifestyle, including your exposure to toxins in your home or work, your diet and nutrition, and electromagnetic influences from your environment.”
“We care for our patients, and we encourage you to stay in touch with us until you feel better. Our doctors and specialists also keep in touch with you through a six week follow-up call and a call from a Marvel Specialist to ensure that you have the support you require while you heal.” www.marvel.health Metropol 3 September, 2020 37

“What a time to celebrate being open for two years – right in the middle of lockdown!,” says Wendy Lamont, who can hardly believe that two years have passed since, encouraged by her mother-in-law Pauline, she exchanged her homebased handmade craft business for the beautiful sunlit store called Mickey Rae’ in Hanmer Spring’s Boulder Point Precinct.

t’s right opposite the duck pond on Chisholm Crescent. “I really want to pay tribute to my mother-in-law at this time. She passed away only a short while ago, but she gave me the courage to take the big step to a shop of my own stocking all the items that both she and I love – fabrics, sewing, knitting, crochet and quilting supplies, craft kits and haberdashery.” But the delights of Mickey Raes don’t stop there. This store is a veritable treasure trove of unique giftware all personally selected by Wendy who runs the shop herself seven days a week. “I have wedding accessories, party supplies and birthday
presents. Right now, I also have hand sanitizer, reusable cotton tissues and face masks – even a pattern to make a face mask.” Wendy is thinking Christmas, too. “Let’s craft our way to Christmas! I’ve brought out my Christmas products early as there has been so much demand from all the New Zealanders flocking to Hanmer. “There’s everything from Christmas crafting supplies and beautiful Christmas fabrics for quilting to knitting cottons for making homemade presents.” You can message Wendy via Mickey Raes’ Facebook page to order your products.

New venture adventure Buying a hospitality business during the Covid-19 lockdown could be seen as a risky venture. That is, however, exactly what Dharambir Judge did when the opportunity arose to purchase the Salt n Pepper Café in Hanmer Springs.
C
ertainly, I had some sleepless nights about it,” says Dharambir. “But I concentrated on the positives of the situation I had been presented with. “My friend Amandeep worked in the café as a manager and knew what a wonderful location it is in and how it could be a thriving enterprise once again when restaurants were able to open. “Above all I have always wanted to have my own business, and this was too good a chance to throw away.” Salt n Pepper occupies a superb position in the Boulder Point retail development, with stunning views of Conical Hill and surrounding countryside
so diners can treat their eyes and recharge their souls as they enjoy the delicious and varied range of food. “I was lucky a friend agreed to support my bid to buy the café. We opened to the public again the day before the July school holidays started and since then we have had a great response from patrons.” Dharambir and his team are now looking to the future and to making Salt n Pepper Café the place everyone wants to dine at in Hanmer Springs. Open seven days for breakfast and lunch, and dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings for now, extending to every night with the warmer weather.

Dual cool on Rotherham Recently recognised with a Travellers’ Choice 2020 award from Tripadvisor, Rogues of Rotherham just keeps building on its reputation as one of the top eating establishments in Christchurch.
D
edicated to delivering a dining experience second-to-none, the key to Rogues’ success is in its commitment to providing the ultimate in food, beverages, ambience and customer service. With Riccarton being one of
the most densely populated residential and business sectors in Christchurch, it’s not easy for a restaurant to stand out from the crowd, but since opening in 2016, this eatery’s popularity has consistently scored high. Undoubtedly, the all-day menu is one of its biggest drawcards. Current hours provide weekend brunch (from 9am), lunch (Thursdays and Fridays) and dinner (Tuesday to Saturday), with plans to extend hours in spring. Nor can variety be underestimated. The mouthwatering menu truly is a feast for the eyes. The choice of fare embraces all tastes - and all dietary requirements. But there’s something else about Rogues that not everybody knows. Concealed behind a covert door is a somewhat rare and fabulous find – a genuine speakeasy. The aptly called Sneaky’s Bar pays homage to the original speakeasy – a secreted room in which glamour, sophistication and intrigue ruled supreme. With hours the same as Rogues’, a rendezvous at Sneaky’s Bar reminds you that life should be a celebration – of all that’s the best and the best that’s yet to come. Dining for dad WORDS MORGAN TAIT
There’s nothing quite like spoiling the important father figure in your life with a homemade breakfast or brunch for Father’s Day. This year, we’re serving up a contemporary take on breakfast classics to help inspire your gastronomical gifts.
BUCKWHEAT WAFFLES
SHAKSHUKA
If dad or someone in your family is gluten-free, try some no-wheat waffles. Mixing buckwheat with a nut flour gives the traditionally sweet treat a more earthy, wholesome flavour. Top with fruit and coconut yoghurt for easy instant freshness.
Get some serious chef cred for whipping up some runny eggs poached in spicy tomato sauce, like those pictured. Team your Middle Eastern feast with some seedy sourdough, a dollop of sour cream and a sprinkle of paprika.
BREAKFAST BURRITOS
Toast dad with a slice of the good stuff some fresh loaf topped with a buffet of options. Start with a trusty smashed avocado base and introduce fruits like strawberries or figs; nuts and seeds; smoky roasted chickpeas; smoked salmon; red onion and cheeses like feta, haloumi or mozzarella.
Build your own breakfast burrito by loading lightly pan-fried wraps with scrambled eggs; avocado, tomato and corn salsa; spinach; bacon; coriander; some chipotle mayo – and a squeeze of fresh lime to zest things up.
FANCY TOAST
SOMETHING SWEET For those father figures with a sweet tooth, why not put your baking skills to the test with some cinnamon scrolls, custard donuts, or banana bread. If baking doesn’t take your fancy, why not sample the goods from your local bakery – we won’t tell it’s not homemade if you don’t.
SOMETHING STRONGER Team your chosen cuisine with some hot coffee, fresh juice, or perhaps even a cheeky cocktail. Try classic brunchtime libations like a Bloody Mary, mimosa, or Pimms. Or, sample something new like a chilli margarita or espresso martini.

Rattan revival WORDS MORGAN TAIT
The appeal of natural fibres in the home refuses to wane, epitomised by the resurgence of rattan, cane and wicker furnishings. Playing into trending aesthetics of modern bohemian, rattan freshens up the mood of any room.
iry and durable, rattan has been used in furniture design for centuries. The climbing vine, which grows mainly in southeast Asia, can be peeled off in strands and chiselled and hammered often laboriously by hand - into flat rattan ready for weaving. Cane is from the outer part of the rattan tree and the inner core, along with bamboo, willow and raffia, is often termed wicker. While popular in the ‘70s, modern cane, rattan and wicker seldom features in full dining or lounging sets anymore – unless for outdoor furniture. Instead we’re seeing more standalone statement pieces. Think situational chairs with boxy wooden frames and webbed rattan insets, or buffet and side tables with the same style panelling. When it comes to home accents, we’re seeing baskets, bed heads, light shades, shelves, mirrors, trays and even book ends in the light organic wood composition. These vintage vibes have been making a comeback for some time, and don’t seem to be going anywhere fast – touted by Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue as decadedefining. Oft seen in the pages of the world’s most stylish magazines and in curated social media feeds paired with soft, neutral fabrics and ever-popular indoor greenery, the light wood also lends itself to being coupled with bright pops of pinks, oranges and blues. Statement or subtle, weaving rattan, wicker or cane into your décor will bring a little romanticism to any space.

Hands up, that’s right, hands up if this year has been one of the most challenging you’ve ever experienced. I’ve got my hand up, have you? We live, as we all know, in uncertain times. There’s a daily bombardment of change all around us. So, no matter what your occupation or vocation, it’s worth thinking about how to manage your levels of wellbeing and optimism as we continue travelling through 2020. Here are some of the tips that have helped me move forward personally and professionally whilst dealing with feelings of vulnerability.
Structure
Thriving
challenging IN
Times
Often the first thing to go in times of stress, but it’s important to maintain habits that help rather than hinder and structure provides that. Sleep, great food and exercise (whether in large or small doses) helps, especially for your mental health, and I know of many who reestablished regular exercise habits during our initial lockdown period. If you are one of these people, I hope that like me you’ve been able to keep it up.
Lighten Up Humour works, especially in the form of a good belly laugh, and I can assure you that if you watch too much television, particularly the news, you’ll notice how easy it is to lose not only your sense of humour but your sense of hope. Spend time with mates and family who want to lift your spirits, not dampen them Surround yourself with positive people. This goes without saying at one level but sometimes it’s a big ask. Seek out, especially, people who focus on solutions rather than problems … better still, try to be that person. Rather than say “I can’t do it,” try “how can we get this done?”
Language is such a powerful element and when applied in a positive manner, that power is magnified.
Let Go Finally, let stuff go, and try not to personalize every little slight. Everyone, yes everyone, is going through their own unique set of challenges and although we’re constantly reminded to be kind, it’s a new world we’re all learning to navigate. So how about it? Do your best, wear a smile and push forward.
The Market But before I sign off, let’s talk about the market. Contrary to what various experts said during and immediately after our initial lockdown period, the market hasn’t slumped and nor have prices dropped. In fact, it’s been – to reference a wellknown movie title – fast and furious! With considerable numbers of sales, even surpassing the number of sales at the same time last year, and some equally exceptional prices. There’s a palpable urgency in the marketplace, whether it’s to be sold before our elections or to purchase and settle whilst interest rates are so low. The big questions are: how long will it last, what changes are ahead and how does that translate for all the parties that are active in the market? We can be certain that we will find out in time and, whatever happens, I’ll be doing my best to remain calm, constructive and optimistic. Spring is here (at last), so let’s enjoy it!

PAINTING & DECORATING Interior/Exterior Residential Light Commercial
The family of a Strowan home describe her as a beautiful English Rose – an ode to iconic Christchurch history. Angee and Chris Robertson fell in love with the spaciousness and strong bones of their character villa two years ago, now renovated with robust modern comforts by DJ Hewitt Builders. “I kept hearing Daryl’s name come up when parents chatted about their home-build experiences,” says Angee, a former English teacher at Shirley Boys and St Margaret’s College. “We had endured the highs and lows of building before, and as busy professionals with two young children we wanted a team of reliability, high quality and integrity. “They guided us through every step of the project. Everything was on time and pre-calculated, with no surprises. The workmanship was faultless! It shows they love what they do, and Daryl did some of the work himself.” Utilising the sunny 800sqm section was the next plan, but the Robertson’s since chose an adventure in Auckland. Elmwood is now for sale, after having only three owners in 110 years. Transformed with personality
from a house to a home, clean lines and clean colours created a classic palette. “It’s so light and bright. To me a home is synesthetic, to involve all your senses. “With the styling from Lume Design, the massive, beautiful kitchen was modernised and a long island bench created our home’s hub and heart. Bathrooms tend to be a quiet space of luxury, so we chose art deco-style Italian tiles and double showers with deluxe rain heads. “Everything was completely rewired and well insulated, with new windows, and there is a heat pump, gas fire and log burner.” The old garage on the north-facing section, was completely rebuilt to look like it has always been there, and includes a guestroom or fourth double bedroom, with its own elegant bathroom. “Both Daryl and Tara treated us like family, making the process simple and pain-free. They were knowledgeable, genuine and warm. We never felt like a number, and through DJ Hewitt we created not just a point of difference, but a point of excellence. Any family would feel at home here.” Visit www.harcourts.co.nz/ Pi64799 to view the home.

Hello Spring! Spring is just around the corner - the days are getting longer, the air is fresh and clean, and new beginnings are here for the taking. We welcome its arrival and look forward to comfortably basking in the great outdoors once again. Which means the timing is perfect for expanding your indoor living into the sunny outdoors, now, in preparation for its arrival.
ouvre Solutions can create a custom space that suits your individual needs with a rain-censored louvre roof, complete with options such as pull-down or motorized side screens, LED lighting, and heat lamps. Entertaining at home has never been easier and Canterbury-based Louvre Solutions, owned and operated by Craig Rogers, knows how to create the perfect outdoor space. Louvre Solutions can bring your ultimate outdoor environment to fruition. The louvres move at your command to allow full sunshine, to filter shade or to provide solid rain protection. Our roofs are waterproof, and you will no longer need to cover your outdoor furniture, BBQs and upholstery as they will be protected from the harsh New Zealand elements. Louvre Solutions’ louvre systems are manufactured with quality elements, precision engineering and aesthetic options to realize your vision. The patio louvre system is strong and conforms to all wind and snow load requirements. Integrating flawlessly into any architectural style, Louvre Solutions manufactures in Canterbury from extruded aluminum which offers greater durability than traditional patio covers. Unlike plastic or fabric, these
components will outperform in heat, wind and rain. “When we started, these premium products were prohibitively expensive. Even with ongoing improvements and advancements in technology to our products, we can offer Louvre Solutions at an affordable price. We are accessible to markets from entry level properties to very high-end spec homes,” Craig says. From aesthetic to practical and environmental benefits, louvres are a brilliant addition and can be planned as part of the design and build process or retrofitted. The roofs create shading when required, and light and heat from the sun when necessary - which can significantly reduce energy required for cooling and heating. With more than 15 years in the industry, Louvre Solutions’ reputation is built on a solid foundation. Craig and his team pride themselves on their burgeoning portfolio of repeat and referred business generated through word of mouth, independent builders, architects, landscape architects and building companies. A louvre roof can be ready for installation within four to six weeks, making today the perfect time to order yours to ensure a summer of outdoor enjoyment. www.louvresolutions.co.nz Metropol 3 September, 2020 53
WHAT DOES GOOD INTERIOR DESIGN LOOK LIKE? “Good interior design is achieved by a well thought out and co-ordinated colour scheme across your whole house. From paint colours and wallpaper, to soft furnishings including drapes, rugs, cushions and throws, all the way through to hard surfaces such as benchtops, cabinetry and fixtures – even key furniture pieces. All those elements need to complement each other to create a finished interior that speaks volumes.”
I’VE LOOKED ON PINTEREST AND SAVED SOME IDEAS, SURELY I COULD DO THIS MYSELF? “Pinterest is a great place to start but pulling all the elements together takes skills and experience. I enjoy using my product knowledge and supplier relationships to deliver desired looks clients have seen. Or, creating a stunning space from one key element - such as a chair, cushion or bedspread - and pairing these with complimentary colours, patterns or textures to create a considered space.”
Why an interior designer?
Petronella’s Interior Design managing director and designer, Ineke Winkelman, tells Metropol how a professional can help create a well-balanced and integrated interior design whether you’re building, renovating or re-decorating.
NOW YOU MENTION IT, THERE’S A LOT OF INTERIOR TRENDS OUT THERE. HOW DO YOU CHOOSE WHAT TO GO WITH? “It’s not always about following trends, everyone has a style or mix of styles. That’s why it’s important for me to meet a client and understand how they live and their style. From there I use fabric, wallpaper and colour to create the right drama and impact outlined in their brief.” www.petronellasdesign.com

ALL ABOUT BALANCE Too many knickknacks look cluttered, but too many large items looks heavy. The solution? Balance the small with the large.

ON THE TOOLS Make sure you’ve got the right tools at hand to help you get your garden into shape, and that they’re sharp and in good working order. Some essentials include: • A good pair of gloves to protect your hands from dirt, thorns, and splinters • Some sharp secateurs which will cut, not crush, stems • Loppers to prune harder to reach areas or thicker branches • A garden fork to turn and dig soil • A hand trowel for replanting smaller plants • A short-handled square shovel for digging holes, moving dirt, and edging

Remove all the debris like leaves, sticks and whatever else has gathered over winter. Then, get weeding! Make sure you get rid of the roots to rid your garden of weeds once and for all. It can also be time to cull any old plants, make like Marie Kondo and remove those which no longer serve.
SORT OUT YOUR SOIL Just like your skin, soil can get dried out and dull over winter – so early spring is time to moisturise that dirt. Start early so beds are ready for planting once temperatures increase. Begin by adding organic material like compost or manure in an even layer, a good rule of thumb is 40L of organic matter per 2sqm of garden space, worked in thoroughly. This aerates and improves organic matter, nutrient content, and microbial activity.
SOWING THE SEED In Canterbury and the lower South Island, where our temperatures can take their time to rise, don’t risk your seeds by planting them too early. Instead, consider seeing your favourite summer plants indoors with seed trays. Some gardening gurus recommend waiting until Labour weekend to make the call on whether your summer seedings should go in the outdoor soil.
LOVE THY LAWN Showing your lawn some love now could make all the difference to whether you are enjoying some soft, full and green grass this summer. The secret? Fertilising well and often will lower the PH of the soil, which should promote the growth of your lawn - and not those pesky weeds.

Multi-prep for Multi-Use Arena WORDS MORGAN TAIT
Preparation for construction of Christchurch’s $473 million Multi-Use Arena continues, with contamination testing, utilities work, transport planning and formation of a project board underway.
onstruction of the 25,000-capacity, roofed stadium is due to begin on the site bordered by Hereford, Tuam, Madras and Barbadoes Streets in February. Until then, Christchurch City Council is working with Enable, Vodafone and Orion to plan and relocate underground services such as water, power and communications cables across the three-block site. Fibre cable hauling is already under way. Three water systems in the area are being redesigned using 3D modelling. Conflicting water mains and stormwater pipes will also be relocated from the site. Results of contamination tests are pending to inform if any asbestos, fuel and coal tar need to be removed from the site and enable a tender to be developed. A transport assessment is also being completed to diagnose and mitigate any impacts on pedestrians, cyclists, public transport and private vehicles by scheduled works. Land Information New Zealand is clearing buildings from the site, and the project board is being formed. Murray Strong – who chaired the steering groups for Te Pae, the bus interchange and Metro Sports Facility – has been named as chair. Christchurch City Council has allocated $253 million to the Canterbury Multi-Use Arena, and the Crown has approved $220 million towards the project from the Christchurch Regeneration Acceleration Fund. The stadium will host sporting and music events when completed, which is estimated to be 2024.

In the space of a few months, the local business community has once again responded to an unprecedented situation with agility, reviewing and reworking not only their day-to-day operations, but also their plans for the future. In early August, we received the news that after 102 days, the country had our first cases of Covid-19 outside managed isolation. While this was disappointing, it was not wholly unexpected. With many countries outside Aotearoa struggling to contain the disease – let alone eliminate it – there was always a possibility of new cases and community transmission. These developments are a very real reminder that we need to revisit, revise and operationalise our own response plans – to hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. By planning early, businesses can give themselves the best chance to stay open and operate safely in this rapidly evolving environment. As there is a lot of speculation, misinformation and scaremongering out there, I would encourage all businesses to refer to official websites and trusted advisors to make sure you are across everything you need to be, are planning and preparing now for any change in alert levels, and are able to access the support you need and are eligible for – such as the new Covid-19 Resurgence Wage Subsidy and simplified COVID-19 Leave Support Scheme. If you are a business owner or manager and would like advice during this challenging time, please contact our South Island Covid-19 Business Helpline on 0800 50 50 96 – and I encourage you to share this phone number with your networks. Spring is almost here, so time for a health spring clean for yourself or your workplace. If you’ve deferred some wellness practices in pursuit of staying in and warm over winter, here’s nine simple strategies for a healthier spring you. Remember this? 30 minutes a day, five days a week, add in two days of musclestrengthening activities and you have an exercise routine. Simple! How’s the diet? Practice five plus a day, include whole grains, some lean meat and low-fat dairy or vegetarian/vegan alternatives. There complete. Rethink your drink. Make it water and reduce sugary drinks and alcohol. Both are full of empty calories and over-consumption can lead to long term health-risk. Getting enough sleep? Aim for seven hours a night and if you aren’t hitting the mark, set strategies to work towards it. Quit smoking! Any time’s a good time. It’s not just your health but that of whānau and friends. Stay covered in the sun and include a good SPF. No need to be dowdy, sun safe can be chic, as can having beautiful skin later in life. Add dental hygiene to your spring clean. While we are brushing, flossing and probably gargling when was the last time you had a check-up? If it’s over a year, it’s time to book. And remember, prevention is better than cure. Maintain your health checks, utilise health-screening services and as we are products of our genealogy, learn and share your family history.

Ministry of Awesome Chief Awesome Officer
If you haven’t heard, our city has just launched an ambitious new programme to enable critical support and growth for Christchurch’s most ambitious innovators and entrepreneurs. The city-wide approach is a key action in the city’s Economic Recovery Plan and aims to boost support across the start-up growth journey – from early stage ideation through to high growth and international scalability. At the heart of the programme is the establishment of two high growth business incubators which staircase from one to the other as the ventures develop. This ‘all of city’ approach is underwritten by ChristchurchNZ’s two agreements; one with Ara Institute of Canterbury (Ara) and Ministry of Awesome through the Te Ōhaka – Centre for Growth & Innovation and the other with University of Canterbury (UC) Business School. The partnership provides targeted support for high growth businesses and includes incubation programmes, innovation challenges, business mentoring and access to investor and commercial networks. Early stage ventures are invited to apply for entry into the Te Ōhaka Incubation Programme where they will receive targeted support to grow and develop to the point of proven viability. Ventures who reach this stage can then work with several next options which include potential entry into the ThincLab programme at UC Business School where they will receive the support they need to grow and scale. This is a fantastic opportunity for our city’s most ambitious entrepreneurs and innovators to step forward, realise their goals, and create the high value jobs of our city’s future.

One of the pleasing aspects of our work delivering anchor projects for Christchurch is the positive impact on suppliers. We’re spending over $10m a month in the city at the moment. We’ve profiled some of those suppliers in recent in-house video updates. Local company, John Jones Steel is producing 4500 tonnes of fabricated steelwork for the large Metro Sports Facility. It’s the biggest project in the company’s 50-year history and will keep them busy for a year. John Jones Steel notes that their staff and families look forward to swimming in the competition and leisure pools, and playing on the court and other facilities, making it a special project for them. That steel is being hoisted into place by Titan Cranes, which has three of the largest cranes ever used in New Zealand on-site, including a massive 500-tonne crawler crane especially imported for the project. I’m with one of the crane operators who notes excitedly: “You’re never too old to ride a hydroslide!” But it’s not just the large companies that benefit from these projects. Remarkable Surfaces, a small family business based at Wigram, is spray painting the 487 gilded boxes that compose the ceiling design in the vast banquet room at the Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre. This is the largest project that Remarkable Surfaces has ever undertaken, and they are indeed doing a remarkable job. With Covid-19, these are challenging times to be delivering major construction projects. We look forward to having them completed for the enjoyment and benefit of us all.

I recently ran a place-making event called the Winter Fun Chill in the City for the Central City Business Association. We received great support from the locals and a wide range of citywide businesses enabling us to offer the central city as a platform where their brands could grow. It was hugely successful and in the main its success was due to people working together to achieve a common goal. We partnered with the Christchurch City Mission and raised over $13,000 to help support the great work they do with our most vulnerable people. We live in very interesting times and we have not yet seen the full impact of how our post Covid-19 world is going to shape up. One thing is for sure, together we are stronger and I have been really heartened by the way our people have been out supporting our local businesses. Maybe, just maybe, we can avert a real crisis by continuing to support our own, as we have seen in the last few months since our economy has reopened. Interestingly enough, with travel restrictions the way they are, you start to revisit your own backyard for those seasonal getaways and you realise that we live in a great country. I am certainly looking forward to seeing more of what our country has on offer and spreading the love around other parts of Aotearoa.

The second wave of Covid-19 has dealt the country a psychological blow alongside the economic and social impacts we are still experiencing from the first outbreak. Ōtautahi Christchurch’s Socio-Economic Recovery Plan anticipated community transmission was likely and remains the basis for how we respond to these impacts. Our sights are firmly set on the immediate aim of supporting businesses and saving and growing jobs and, over the longer term we are building a foundation to reposition the city for a smart, sustainable future to ensure intergenerational wellbeing. Already we’ve seen the delivery of several initiatives from the plan; including the recent partnership with the University of Canterbury (UC) Business School and Ara Institute of Canterbury and Ministry of Awesome through the Te Ōhaka – Centre for Growth & Innovation, to deliver an all-of-city approach to innovation. Start-ups and businesses with high growth potential now have even more support, advice, networks, mentoring and access to investor and commercial networks here and overseas. The Ministry of Awesome will be the home for early-stage start-ups – their Incubation Programme and wealth of other start-up support will grow our best ideas into business opportunities. ThincLab at UC will focus on high growth ventures, providing further incubator support and connecting businesses with the best local, national and international expertise to fast-track their growth. Without a doubt, you can expect to see great things come out of the city’s innovation ecosystem over the next year.

Buying or selling a home?
Don’t let the dream vanish down the drain
hen it comes to buying or selling a home, drains are not necessarily something many of us consider. However, as Josh Mackey, owner of MHR Drainage, explains—damaged drains are a constant problem for both buyers and sellers in the greater Christchurch area. “Following the earthquakes, we were flat out doing emergency drainage repairs,” he says. “These repairs — which were only ever designed to be temporary — may well be failing now. Combine this with the fact that thousands of homes in Christchurch still have undiagnosed problems with drains, creates a big red flag for buyers. “Our team carry out diagnostic tests daily and about half the homes we visit show earthquake related damage to the drains.” Josh points out there is good news: “Damaged drains are covered by the EQC, even if your 2010 or 2011 claim has been settled. Plus, there is no cut-off date for lodging a claim relating to drainage. “So, the best solution for vendors is to have an inspection done prior to listing your home on the market. Then if there are problems these can be rectified through the EQC system. Similarly, for a home buyer, a simple drain inspection as part of your due diligence provides peace of mind and helps avoid costly complications down the line.” For more information on drain inspections — call the team at MHR Drainage on 0800 356 946. www.mhrdrainage.co.nz

“We use Expol underfloor heating, which are rigid polystyrene panels fitted under floorboards to stop cold air and damp drawing through. The products are non-allergenic and non-irritating and come in different varieties for different conditions. If you live somewhere extremely cold or windy for example – which is not uncommon in parts of Canterbury and the lower South Island - I’d recommend our graphite-infused product which is 30 percent above code.”
DON’T I HAVE TO DO BIG RENOVATIONS TO GET NEW INSULATION?
Level headed about insulation
Insulating your home or investment property not only keeps you warm and dry and saves on power bills, but it increases the value and compliance of your asset. Metropol catches up with Canterbury and South Island insulation specialist Michael Cations of Level Head to learn more.
“Not at all. Expol is great for new and existing flooring, it exceeds the minimum R Value for timber floors and improves the insulation rating of your home. It’s especially great for polished wooden floors common in older homes, or exposed floors common in newer homes.”
ISN’T SPRING A FUNNY TIME TO INSULATE? “Spring is actually a great time! Not just because of our spring specials, but most people wait until winter – when there can be long waits and when they won’t get the full benefits of insulation. In spring, it’s generally easier to schedule. It’s also an opportune time to get set up for summer, before your air conditioning bills come in.” Contact Mike on 0273444680 or via mike@ levelhead.co.nz for a no-obligation quote, or to find out more about the springtime specials. www.levelhead.co.nz

The day spa is funded entirely from the central government’s Provincial Growth Fund, and the fly-line received $123,000 from that fund and $2 million from Crown Infrastructure Partners’ Infrastructure Industry Reference Group created to reduce the economic impact of Covid-19. The allocation was announced by Under-Secretary for Regional Economic Development Fletcher Tabuteau, who said: “While Covid-19 has had an impact on international tourist numbers, we want to support Hanmer Springs to continue to be a top family friendly tourist draw card for domestic visitors from both the North and South islands. It is expected the fly-line, an 850m-long, gravity-powered flying fox-type structure, will be completed by Spring 2021 and create up to 25 new jobs with $4 million of economic benefit generated to the region over the first five years of operation. The thermal pools and spa expansion involves investigating the construction of a luxury day spa on the site of the former Queen Mary Hospital and the provision of a new area of hot pools and a new hydroslide.

he deadline was originally August 14, 2020,” says Charles Porter, Contracts Manager for house re-levelling company Precision Solutions. “But there are so many instances of houses requiring re-repairing post the earthquakes that the deadline has been extended,” he says. Precision Solutions is therefore urging homeowners to have their properties assessed right now, including floor level and foundation issues in which the company specialises. “Thousands of homes have been bought and sold in Christchurch since 2011. Many people are simply unaware they may have problems until they try to sell and are forced to get a builder’s report which will then show up any issues,” says Charlie. “If you miss this extended time period to make a claim you could personally be paying out tens of thousands of dollars for repairs.” Charlie says the team at Precision Solutions offers a free initial site inspection within the Christchurch area to assess and identify any issues. If there is a problem, they can help homeowners navigate what they need to do with EQC and subsequently carry out the remedial work. Don’t delay any longer. Make the precision decision. An historic birthday WORDS MORGAN TAIT
One of Christchurch’s most iconic heritage buildings celebrated a notable achievement recently - its 107th birthday.
T
he Old Government Building in Cathedral Square has long been an epochal architectural addition to Canterbury’s cityscape. Beginning life, as the name suggests, as home to several government departments when it opened in August 1913, the building has lived several lives in its 107 years. It was designed by
renowned architect Joseph Clarkson Maddison in a grand Italian Renaissance Palazzo style, which was typical for official buildings built in New Zealand in the late Victorian and early Edwardian years. The style was seen to project an impression of authority to signify the power of the state.

condition it was earthquake strengthened. That condition - completed as part of the building’s conversion into luxury hotel suites under the Heritage Christchurch brand - likely saved the building. The Heritage Christchurch opened in 1996, and the strengthening works made it one of the only heritage buildings in the CBD still standing after the Canterbury earthquakes. The building, with much of its historic character preserved, now hosts beautifully appointed selfcontained one- and twobedroom suites, plus, a fully equipped health club with lap pool, sauna and jacuzzi on site. It’s also home to the popular OGB bar, and a barber shop. Heritage Hotels has secured numerous awards for its stewardship of the building, including Canterbury Heritage Awards in 2010, 2012, 2014 and again in 2018 in the tourism category, as well as several World Luxury Hotel Awards over the last decade.

Maddison was known for designing many large scale and brickwork buildings in the city, including the original Ballantynes and Carlton buildings, as well as several churches and large industrial factories in wider Canterbury. The foundation stone of the Old Government Building was laid by then-Prime Minister Sir Joseph G Ward in 1911, who told the gathered crowds they should be proud to have such a building of character “suitable to the importance of the city”. The building housed various government departments until the 1980s when occupants moved to other newer offices, and the beautiful building fell into serious disrepair. Public outcry saved it from demolition, and Christchurch City Council purchased the building from the central government for $735,000 in 1991. It was then on-sold to high profile Aucklandbased property developers, Symphony Group, for a profit of over $6 million, and on the

Repairing the Repairs T
he EQC $300m policy for homeowners of over-cap on-sold properties in Canterbury enabled affected homeowners to apply for an ex gratia Government payment to have their homes repaired. The payment was also available if the same owners had the home, but believed the repairs done post-earthquakes were not satisfactory, or overlooked levelling. WD Build and Hardy Projects have been at the forefront of this process, helping homeowners get the correct repairs. Recent client Ben McLean is delighted with the result he has
received, “working with company owners Mitchell James and Paul Hardy was so easy – they made the process really straightforward when we didn’t have a clue about what was required.” The house required foundation repair, partial relevel, new flooring, tiling in the bathroom, internal painting, electrics brought to code, and the underfloor insulation which had been noncompliant all replaced. The garage had its foundations dug out and replaced as well as blockwork repaired. “The house now looks amazing,” says Ben “and the estimate of four to six

livia Gallop, Stonewood’s PreConstruction Manager has a particular interest in this showhome and has been involved with the project from initial concept to completion. “The house was designed with the intention of creating an impact as soon as someone walks through the front door,” she says. And without a doubt the single level 235sqm black brick and cedar family home does just that. The house has two separate distinct wings. At the heart of one wing is a striking kitchen, butler’s pantry and family living area filled with natural light from the pitched ceilings featuring skylights, and full height glazing overlooking the garden. A cosy formal lounge is off to one side. The colour palette of the kitchen and living area is moody greys with accent dark timbers, says Olivia. “We used colours and products that might not be regarded as conventional because we wanted to showcase the huge range available on the market. It’s fun to be different and playful with interior finishes and we encourage clients to put a unique and personal stamp on their homes,” she says. In the second wing of the home is
the large master suite, three family bedrooms, separate laundry and a walk-in linen cupboard. In this part of the house too there is evidence of a creative design hand at work. The tiles on the floors of the bathrooms and separate toilet are a dramatic geometric black and white, while all the tapware is brass. The Amazonian-jungle patterned wallpaper in the separate toilet is a real conversation starter, as is the delightfully cheeky wallpaper in the nursery. “Visiting this showhome is a great way for clients to experience the high level of craftsmanship and integrity we dedicate to building our homes and designing house plans,” says Olivia. “The tradespeople who worked on this home are the same team who work on all our homes, so there is no difference in the standard delivered.” Stonewood Christchurch has hundreds of home design variations available, as well as offering a design and build service. “Each of our standard plans can be modified as we believe a new home should reflect each client and their unique style and requirements.” Visit the showhome and talk with a new home consultant via shc.info@stonewood.co.nz. www.stonewood.co.nz
