“A good half of the art of living is resilience.”

I was going to start this, my first column as editor of Metropol, writing about beginnings. After a bit of googling I had found a lovely quote from spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle about the magic of beginnings, and had even written a few lines about the opportunities of starting anew. But after Friday’s announcement - when we released an almost national (sorry, Auckland) sigh of relief that we would stay in the lockdown-less Alert Level 2 - I realised it’s not about starting, it’s about continuing. And Canterbury knows a thing or two about that. Continuing is a common thread weaving the region’s stories together; our communities personify resilience. When I moved back to Christchurch three years ago, I was blown away by the sense of community here. There was a shared investment in communal success I’d never encountered before, and have come to understand as the city’s superpower. In the face of adversity, Cantabrians know the key to getting through is to do it together. I inherit some intimidatingly large shoes from Metropol’s outgoing editor, Melinda Collins, just as a global pandemic tries to sneak back into our communities. Yet with so much uncertainty on the horizon, I know one thing for sure: I wouldn’t want to be doing it anywhere else. Metropol has dedicated its pages to celebrating community for the last 22 years, and it’s a huge privilege to help that continue.

Dancing home, from afar WORDS MORGAN TAIT
Forced to reimage dance in a contactless, Covid-19 world, Switzerland-based Sumnerraised contemporary dancer Emma Murray has been selected for Christchurch-based Movement Art Practice (MAP)’s residency, which will be run and shown digitally for the ďŹ rst time at the end of this month.
6 20 August, 2020 Metropol
E
mma found her feet as a dancer at six-years-old and went on to study at the New Zealand School of Dance, later earning a place at the Royal New Zealand Ballet Company. She left New Zealand in her early 20s to dance across Europe. She’s recently completed a Masters in Contemporary Art Practice at the Hochschule der Künste in Bern, Switzerland and was selected for the MAP residency by an impressive lineup of Kiwi judges including Cat Ruka, Paul Young and Pelenakeke Brown. She tells Metropol about her journey as a dancer.
Eventually I found work in a city theater in Innsbruck, Austria and from there, moved to Switzerland where I was engaged as a soloist at the Stadt Theater Bern (now Konzert Theater Bern). That work was some of the most demanding and exciting of my career – not least because during this time I became a mother juggling fulltime dance and childcare. Developing my own projects has allowed me to diversify my skills in and out of the studio, on and off the stage, as well as straddle various artistic disciplines and work with other artists across cultural divides. I left the Konzert Theater Bern in 2008, and I’ve continued to travel for performing, residencies or workshops, festivals and teaching engagements.
Probably what I’m most proud of – and in all honesty a little amazed by – is that I’m still doing it! Still performing and making work, still engaged on projects my own and with others - and still finding the funding to do it. Because of Covid-19, artists have been quick to look for alternatives or solutions. For me, a drop in productivity (the closure of theaters, postponement or cancellation of festivals and performances) has meant more time for reflection and practice. The MAP Research Exchange programme offers me an opportunity to re-think performance in the digital sphere and explore tactile possibilities for working with multi-media. I’ll be doing this alongside the critical theorist Giulia Palladini. I am looking to bring alive a conversation between written text and the body, the body and digital technology, digital technology and performing an archive. Watch the three winning residencies broadcast their projects at www.movementartpractice.org

LIGHTING UP THE DARK WORDS MORGAN TAIT
In times of darkness we all just need to have a good laugh, says South African-Kiwi Urzila Carlson. And the multi award-winning comedian is certainly up to delivering on that brief. She speaks to Metropol about how humour can get us through.
F
rom her Sydney hotel room on the last day of her mandated isolation, Urzila Carlson is typically hilarious – and busy. Her two-week stay in a sunless room saw her continue her regular appearances on Australian, New Zealand and South African television, as well as, “podcasts, heaps of podcasts”. She maintained her regular panellist slot on comedy show Have You Been Paying Attention? Australia and New Zealand, as well as conducting radio, television and podcast interviews. These interviews centred around her upcoming rescheduled New Zealand tour and the success of her recent hour-long Netflix comedy special, Overqualified Loser. Her feature on the global streaming platform makes her the first Kiwi to get a coveted hour-long special, a format known for featuring the trade’s biggest names (Jerry Seinfeld and Adam Sandler) while launching lesser-known names into the spotlight (like Australian Hannah
8 20 August, 2020 Metropol
Gadsby), too. “I was blown away when they offered it to me,” Urzila says. “I did the 30-minute one [Comedians Around the World] then thought, ‘that’s it, I’m happy with that’, but then when they gave me the hour…wow. It’s such a good way and platform to open up comedy to the world.” Not that Urzila necessarily needs to be introduced to the world. Since first stepping on the stage in 2008, she has won the NZ Comedy Guild’s Best Female Comedian award six times as well as the coveted People’s Choice Award at the NZ International Comedy Festival two years in a row. She has won the Sydney Comedy Festival’s Director’s Choice Award, was a nominee for Australia’s Helpmann Award for Best Comedy Performer in 2018, and has sold out seasons in London, Edinburgh, Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Auckland, Wellington, Queenstown and Christchurch. But undeniably, the show will
introduce her to a new horde of fans. “No matter where you go, people ask you, ‘do you prefer English or American comedy?’, and I’m like, ‘you realise there’s other regions?’.” And in her experience, audiences don’t discriminate. When performing in Hong Kong and Singapore recently, she had sold out shows with predominantly local attendants. “People just enjoy comedy.” And it’s this philosophy she believes will see us all through the current uncertainty of Covid-19. “My job is, when people have had a rough week, they can have a laugh. People just want to go out and have a laugh, they don’t want to be reminded of what’s going on - it’s not a news broadcast. “My job is to make you laugh flat out for an hour.” Those laughs often come from Urzila making fun of herself. Her self-deprecating humour – especially in Unqualified Loser - often centring around body image. “I don’t really tell jokes,” she says. “I tell stories about my life.”

“We all go through the same experience, and this whole virus thing is proof of that. It’s really showing us we’re all going through the same thing. “People laugh at the stuff they can relate to. If you’ve seen, heard or felt it you’re going to laugh at it. “[Body image] is such a big thing, there’s not one human being on the planet, regardless of what they look like, who doesn’t have a hang up. “We all have an issue with one part of ourselves. You could look at someone and say, ‘you’re perfect’ and they will say ‘I’ve got this weird droopy butt cheek’. Yes, we need to cut other people some slack, but also we need to cut ourselves some slack.” When she comes to Christchurch, her “home away from home” as her mother and sister live here, she says her show - originally planned to be performed in July – will look at another universal experience: modern rage. “As a society we’re angrier than ever, especially after we’ve survived something. In Christchurch after the earthquakes people were angry… and we’ll see it now after the virus, too. “I think the world is going to suffer from PTSD after the virus because they had no outlet. Everything around you is facilitated to help your day go easier and smoother.” She explains how humans used to have an outlet, doing household work like chopping firewood, now our rage stays put – until we get on the internet. While that’s where the show’s spoilers end, Urzila promises attendees, “…just a great laugh”. “There’s no life lessons to take away from it - just watch it, laugh and have a good time.” Sounds like the perfect medicine for our times.

The Art of living WORDS MORGAN TAIT
He proved us wrong about reality TV. Now married to the woman he met on the show, Matilda, the couple is about to celebrate their son’s first birthday. Cantabrian and former The Bachelor New Zealand, Art Green, speaks with Metropol about love and life in the limelight, and moving his business home.

rt became a household name almost overnight as the inaugural The Bachelor New Zealand, but it’s what he’s done since which has cemented his status there. It’s been five-and-a-half years since Art gave Matilda her first rose, and the couple have now been married for 18-months and their son, wee Milo, is about to turn one. And it’s been a busy few years – all lived in the public eye. With a commercially lucrative 270,000 followers on Instagram

between them, the pair have both launched successful careers from their high profiles. They have started paleo readymade meal company Plate Up, recorded six seasons of their podcast Well & Good, and fulfilled a handful of television presenter roles between them. Art has gone on to host The Bachelorette New Zealand, while Matilda has hosted Heartbreak Island. Both have written books. “Going on The Bachelor put my life
in fast forward,” says Art. “And it feels like it wasn’t until Milo was born that now it can slow down, and I can stop and breathe and spend time with him and Mattie.” That slow down means moving to Warkworth, north of Auckland and working mainly from home, where the decision was recently made to move production of Plate Up to Art’s hometown of Christchurch. “We have a lot of customers down there and we procure a lot of fresh produce from there, so it made sense to move it down.” Plate Up, like his other endeavours, is an extension of Art’s passion for health, fitness and wellbeing – a lifestyle he’s cultivated since childhood. “It all started when I was little,” he says. “My dad’s always been really fit and had a home gym, a bench made from beer crates and an old axle bar as a bench press. I’d hang out in the shed when he was doing that, and that’s probably where my interest began.” It was that interest which saw him, after graduating from the University of Otago with a Bachelor of Physical Education, land a job managing an onsite gym at a mining site in Western Australia. There, he worked four weeks stints on site in the middle of the desert, where had free reign of a gym and all his meals catered - and realised he was in the perfect conditions to turn himself into a science experiment. “I started looking at all sorts of diets and nutrition and exercise schools of thoughts and started testing them out. I did keto, [meal replacement shakes] Isagenix, no sugar, and then I did paleo.” Known as “the caveman diet”, paleo nutrition centres around the concept of eating whole, unprocessed foods. “At first I thought it was bullsh*t, but the more I read about it the more it made sense and then when I started doing it, it had great results for me – I had lots of energy, I wasn’t hungry and was getting good results from training.” He became a paleo poster boy of sorts. He moved back to New Zealand and joined two friends who

had started their own paleo food venture, Clean Paleo, which was successful until a malfunction at its Auckland factory ruined its entire manufacturing operation. After a year of trading in administration, the business was recently sold to new buyers. The business’ end was widely reported by the media, a fact Art has come to accept about life in the public eye. “Our lives are certainly not private anymore. At the start I would go through stages with it, I used to find myself really not wanting to be held up as a role model, but it’s just an inevitability, and now I’m absolutely fine with it. “It’s quite cool just meeting people out in the real world. People sometimes want to come up and have a chat with us, it can be quite a nice icebreaker, and I quite like it.” He says a recent Well & Good episode, where the couple interviewed controversial Australian celebrity chef Pete Evans, showed him how far he’s come in dealing with the scrutiny. “The social media side of things is a little bit more intense. It’s definitely a transition from going to having a private social media profile to have tens of thousands of people watching everything you post. “It can be volatile at times. Most recently, with the podcast episode, we got a lot of backlash and I think we handled it well not just professionally but for ourselves personally, too. “I think that’s just from years of experience being in the spotlight, and both dealing with these situations and being able to support each other.” When it comes to Milo, the couple have thought a lot about how they plan to raise a family with so many eyes watching. “It’s a really tough one to navigate, and we think it about it a lot, and thought about it a lot before he was born. “He doesn’t feature in any posts that we’re undertaking to do with any brands or commercial stuff, and we’ve been trying to minimise the amount he’s in any of our posts. “We’ll begin phasing him out of everything to do with social media once he’s old enough to be recognised.”

Curiosity cures the cat When Jasmine the usually active Bengal cat became quiet and lost her appetite, her owner took her to Wigram Vet to investigate. Clinic founder Dr Geoff Mehrtens tells Metropol his unexpected ďŹ ndings.
B
engal cats are intelligent and active with an amazing patterned coat. They make vocal, livewire pets who fetch much like a Border Collie. So, when Jasmine became quiet and withdrawn her owner, Rachel, knew something was wrong. She brought Jasmine to us because her appetite declined and she occasionally swallowed as if nauseous. Vomiting sometimes, she sometimes ate normally, too. As a veternarian, it is always challenging to investigate subtle changes in appetite and attitude. Do we go into full diagnostic mode when the patient is otherwise normal?
In Jasmine’s case, an initial examination gave us no clues except her excessive swallowing which is sometimes seen with pharyngitis and esophagitis. Jasmine hates oral medication, so nothing is easy with Jasmine. Symptomatic treatment appeared to ease her discomfort initially, but two weeks later Jasmine was still mildly unwell and was beginning to lose weight. Defecation was reduced but normal, and scans showed nothing significant. A week later with no improvement and further weight loss - we were getting worried. So, we used an
endoscope to look at her pharynx, oesophagus and stomach lining. Everything looked fine. While anesthetized, we took the opportunity to repeat x-rays and ultrasounds. Again, nothing untoward was noted. Again, I felt her abdomen. What was that soft mass I could feel? It had a strange spherical roundness that I could not explain, was this the answer we had been searching for? An ultrasound showed just a normal-looking gas shadow - but we had to find out. An exploratory laparotomy revealed a smooth foam rubber foreign body had long defied our attempts at a diagnosis. A small piece of rubber missing from the end of her favourite toy, it was the perfect size to gently block her intestine, and the bowel was still healthy as the foam was allowing some ingesta through. Tricky, very tricky. www.wigramvet.co.nz

When she was diagnosed with renal cancer, Christchurch woman Angie Milner’s immediate thoughts were making sure she supported her family. The Cancer Society made sure she was supported, too. WORDS MORGAN TAIT
ot many people expect a cancer diagnosis. And especially not Angie, who had no risk factors when told she had a form of kidney cancer in 2018. “I just didn’t know what to do or where to go,” says the mother of four. Having lived in Bankside, between Rakaia and Dunsandel, for 15-years, she is an active member of the community and a fellow Civil Defence volunteer recommended she pop into the then-new Selwyn Centre, a Cancer Society hub in Rolleston, which runs a support group on the first Monday of every month. She ventured in with her husband, Ken, “and was met by the most amazing lady called Jackie Claridge,” she says. “She was just full of life; really bubbly, friendly and welcoming and introduced us to the group. We had a cup of tea and biscuits and talked about nothing in particular and had some laughs.” The Cancer Society offers support services, advice, information and research funding in its quest to advocate for patients and their whānau. It is not government funded and relies on donations to deliver its services like accommodation, transport and support groups. Angie says the support she received – like information about and transport to medical procedures, including the one which removed part of her kidney - made all the difference on her cancer journey. “You can just go there and be yourself – you could cry, laugh or shout and everything would just be accepted. “When you’re [facing cancer] the world carries on around you, but you become someone different, your perspective changes. “You tend not to think about yourself, you think about your children and relations and making sure they’re going to be okay, so The Cancer Society is a place you can go and be you – and meet people who have similar things going on in their lives.” Last year, Angie organised a charity art auction which raised over $7,500 for the organisation and she urges Cantabrians to support its annual Daffodil Day appeal on Friday, August 29 if they can. This years’ drive may take a different, sociallydistanced, format - so check The Cancer Society’s website for ways to help. www.daffodilday.org.nz

The Pandemic Pivot
Celebrating small Canterbury businesses innovating in hard times
Socially-distanced drinking An increasingly hygiene conscious world could have been the end of Christchurch man Ian McCormick’s drinking fountain business. Instead, he invented a solution.
N
ow, TapWaterWells’ new contactless fountains and water bottle fillers are being installed in schools and public facilities around New Zealand. The Contactless Hydration Stations are so socially distanced, users can fill their bottle or drink from the faucet with their hands in their pocket, simply stepping on the foot pedal to start the water. As concerns of COVID-19 hitting our shores grew in March, Ian started fielding calls from his customers – mainly schools – that they were turning off the fountains because they feared the machines required too much hand contact and may transmit the virus. By the time the country
was put into Level 4 lockdown, Ian knew it might be some time before the fountains – which children often put their mouths on were welcome again. So, he and his wife Madeleine put on their thinking caps and happened to both come up with the same idea: Pedal-power. “All I had to do was design the see-saw operated foot pedal instead of the previous push mechanism, which required your hands,” he says. Ian sent rough sketches of the mechanism to his Computer-aided Design (CAD) designer, who turned them into workable designs from his home. Ian also uses a small local engineer, who also works solo from his home and who was able to turn the design into reality with some spare materials he had. “By the time we came out of lockdown, we had the prototype operating and are now in full production.
“They’re now installed in schools in Christchurch, Havelock North, Tauranga and Auckland. “We also have an order to be installed at a new bus depot in Silverdale in Auckland, and a multi-unit installation at an event centre also in Auckland.” Ian says if he hadn’t acted quickly, his business could be facing a very uncertain future. “As soon as the school said they were shutting them down, we knew this could be a problem – so if we wanted to stay in business we had to be ahead of the pack. “We’re a small local business and were able to react reasonably quickly. This has really opened up opportunities for us, perhaps even overseas.” Ian says the Contactless Hydration Stations can be used in schools and businesses, as they’re great for hygienically filling bottles and cups. Ensuring people are protected for their future – whether that’s buying an earthquake damaged home, preparing their will and powers of attorney, or moving into a retirement home – is what drives Christchurch lawyer Shona Senior.
My advice for young women coming into law now would be to choose a firm which is the right fit for you and the area of law you want to practice in.
fter retraining as a lawyer 10 years ago, Shona wanted to specialise in “elder law”, the legal issues impacting the aging population. Growing up she watched her parents care for her grandparents, who lived into their late 90s, and this piqued her interest in legal issues that affect people as they age. “I wanted to help families navigate the myriad of issues which come with old age, like asset planning, residential care costs, preparing robust wills, family trusts and advising on occupation licences.” She also enjoys helping home buyers of all ages, ensuring they’re protected from the risks of buying and selling homes - especially earthquake damaged and poorly repaired houses. Working as a woman in a traditionally male field, Shona says it was initially challenging juggling motherhood and long hours with little in the way of flexible work practices. “Studying law when my daughter was quite young, that was quite hard as a lot of firms worked the traditional way, which was long hours and without any allowance for attending to childcare.” There are now many women in the legal profession in New Zealand, and she says the profession is slowly changing and becoming more flexible. She values Godfreys Law for its flexibility, and she works part-time so she can help her own parents as they get older. “My advice for young women coming into law now would be to choose a firm which is the right fit for you and the area of law you want to practice in.” Prior to becoming a lawyer, Shona worked as a librarian in Christchurch and government researcher in Wellington. residential community and learning centre providing education and social therapy for adults with intellectual disabilities, the only South Island branch of the nationwide organisation is a flourishing residential community providing homes, flats, day services and support staffing for 140 people across two main sites in Somerfield and Halswell. The two new purpose-built homes will support 12 Hohepa community members with not just a physical home, but a safe, supportive, beautiful and peaceful place to settle and grow. Each four-bedroom dwelling has a fully self-contained two-bedroom flat adjoining it, enabling those who can achieve more independence in a safe and supported way. The dream project is coming to fruition because of two philanthropic organisations – the Sutherland Self Help Trust and the Lamar Charitable Trust. The fundraising campaign was launched in October 2019 with a $500,000 donation from the Wellingtonbased Sutherland Self Help Trust, followed by a

second $500,000 donation in July from the Lamar Charitable Trust, a little known but incredibly generous Christchurch-based charitable trust. Lamar’s chair, and Ainger Tomlin Chartered Accountants Director, Brent Smith, says the trust supports members of our society living with disability to live their most rewarding lives possible within the community. “We have built a close relationship with Hohepa Canterbury over the years and believe the service they provide is outstanding and worthy of such a significant contribution towards their goal. We are proud to do our part to enable more people and families to benefit from Hohepa’s support in the new homes.” An on-site Hohepa home already named Lamar House from a previous capital campaign will be renamed Lamb and Marker House, and the newly built second home will be named Lamar House. Lamb and Marker are the surnames of the two benefactors of the trust, which was established posthumously to support vulnerable people, including those with intellectual disabilities. Hohepa is halfway to its fundraising goal thanks to other campaign donations and in-kind contributions. Hohepa Canterbury General Manager Arnah Trelease says: “This campaign is special, there’s something about the nature of the cause that people are responding to and seeing the value in supporting these members of our community to live their best lives. “These new homes will enable us to welcome 12 more people into our community. We are incredibly grateful for this support of our amazing community.” She says contributions to the project allow much more than bricks and mortar to be built, it helps build lives by valuing individuality and celebrating what each person brings to the community. Learn more about the project and how you can help by contacting Arnah Trelease on 027 801 9034 or via arnah.trelease@hohepacanterbury.com.

What’s new in nails There’s a new resident in Fendalton Village, and she means business! Specifically, the kind that involves nails – whether that be painting or care tips.
E
ight months ago Tomoko Tsuj, owner of Nails by Tomo, set up a little station in Elegance Beauty Clinic. And with the move came 23-years of professional experience and qualifications gained in Japan. With Tomoko, it isn’t just about putting on a pretty polish and saying goodbye to the customers. She wants to provide a more personal touch “I don’t want to just paint nails, I really want to help my customers with their nail care as well. “Some of my customers have been nail biters their
whole lives and I’ve helped them to change that.” Like with most treatments, it’s not one quick fix or remedy. Tomoko says a large factor is your job and how you’re using your hands. She aims to “make the customer happy by strengthening the nails and ensuring there’s less damage”. But there also needs to be credit given where it’s due: Tomo paints beautifully intricate designs using high quality Japanese products. Cutting edge laser beam technology is cutting feet issues for Cantabrians just in time for open-toe shoe season.
F
ootprints Podiatry’s Lunula Laser uses a double cold beam to ensure no pain – or even sensation – for patients, and Senior Podiatrist Howard Nicholas tells us more about the leading fungal nail treatment.
health
Laser focus on summer feet What is Lunula Laser?
When is the best time to get these treatments?
What are the results?
The Lunula Laser is the newest standard in treating fungal nail infections. It had been used extensively worldwide with impressive results - and that convinced me to invest in the technology. The great aspect for patients is that it uses two cold laser beams, which means no heat or pain. Once patients have their foot inside, they actually have no sensation that anything is happening at all.
The process of treatment starts with four sessions about a week to 10 days apart. Each foot is exposed to the laser beams for 12 minutes. There may be further sessions depending on the severity of the fungal infection. Winter is the perfect time to have this treatment in readiness for summer and your favourite pair of opentoed shoes.
We introduced it last year, and I was over the moon with the results immediately. The level of improvement is amazing. We’re seeing better nail growth and appearance, as well as improvement in the tone and condition of the skin around the nail. s the weather warms, so does our propensity to adorn lighter, floatier fabrics. And a new wave of tiered dresses, skirts and tops are rising to the challenge. Fun and versatile, voluminous tiers are catching our attention for the ability to look impossibly chic, a little whimsical, and extremely comfortable all at once. A nod to the Prairie dress of last summer, this years’ tiers are more refined; falling in mini to midi and maxi hemlines, with on-trend statement puff sleeves, or no sleeves at all. Tiered tops are either cropped or creeping into tunic territory. Waistlines can be dropped, or high, but one thing is certain: voluminous tiers are roomy enough for lounging, but polished enough to impress.
Admittedly a departure from dresses we might be familiar with, it’s an opportune time to try something new. Especially something new, comfortable and cool. If you’re apprehensive the style may add too much fabric to your frame, opt for flattering A-line silhouettes, sleeveless numbers, cinch in with a belt, or team a wafty tiered skirt with a crop top. Whatever you do, make sure to wear your tiers with pride. And perhaps with a sophisticated pair of sandals, some crisp white sneakers or some chunky Dr Martens.

Let’s talk tan WORDS JESS MURRAY
Travel might have been put on hold, but when done right you can achieve that “just gotten back from Europe” tan sans passport.
W
e’re nearing the end of August and coming into a new season; spring! Those big winter jackets are being swapped for lighter layers with bare arms and legs, and that means one thing: tan is needed, stat. So, we’ve put together some essential tanning tips to make sure you get a natural look, without any harmful UV rays.
1. FINDING THE FORMULA: I was never a big fan of math but what I did learn is, finding the perfect formula is crucial to the end result. The same applies for tanning products. Personally, I’ve found Bondi Sands to be very reliable throughout the years. The lightweight foam gives you that bronzed perfection after just six hours.
2.
3.
4.
AD-MITT IT:
BYE TO DRY:
MEET THE TAN-SIE:
I would strongly recommend against using your hands to apply faux tan. Instead, a good quality mitt ensures even distribution, and your hands are kept clean. And if you don’t have a friend to apply it to your back…you can invest in a back applicators, too.
Before applying the tan, and after you’ve showered and exfoliated, make sure to lightly apply moisturiser on your elbows and knees. This will prevent the tan from clinging onto those dry spots! You can also use moisturiser once your fake tan has developed to prolong your tan and prevent cracking.
A custom-made zip front onesie, the Tansie by Spray Tan Wear is designed to protect your furniture, bedding, clothing – and your tan. Wear it while waiting for your tan to develop or while sleeping, and bid adieu to bronzed sheets, PJs and chairs.

The winning combination against acne and scarring! First switch off the acne using evidence based treatments, then stimulate the skin’s own ability to heal itself using Skinpen - the only microneedling device approved by the notoriously high standards of the US Food and Drug Administration.
he Team at Mohs and Skin Cancer not only specialise in diagnosing and removing skin cancers by the gold standard technique called Mohs surgery, but they also run a dedicated acne clinic. Dr Emma Trowbridge says, “Studies have shown that acne sufferers take an average of eight years to seek professional help. By then patients have often developed permanent scarring, and suffered substantial psychological distress.” Emma is passionate about preventing scarring and distress caused by acne, with early and evidence-based acne treatments. Where patients have already developed scarring, Emma and fellow Mohs’ doctor, Dr Mairi-Clare Ferguson are excited to introduce wonderful new technology, the Skinpen. The Skinpen is the first FDAapproved microneedling device and is clinically proven to safely and effectively treat acne scars. “We chose Skinpen as it has the strongest evidence behind it for improving the
appearance of scars from acne or surgery,” says Mairi-Clare. “It has minimal downtime with any redness resolved within 24 hours, making it a suitable treatment for those with busy lifestyles who cannot afford the downtime associated with other scarring treatments. “The Skinpen is also effective at reducing pigmentation such as melasma and for boosting collagen production resulting in smoother, healthier looking skin. “Acne does not have to be ‘lived with’ so contact the clinic today and we can find the correct treatment plan to clear your skin,” says MairiClare. hose in the snow know one of the perks of hitting the slopes is what comes at the end of the day – après ski. A mountainside custom coined in the Swiss and French Alps, après ski is, as the name suggests, what comes “after” a day on your skis or snowboards. Some European and North American ski
destinations are known for their post-slope party atmospheres, Kiwis can still get a slice of the action close to home – even if your idea of action is a relaxed mulled wine by the fire. And there’s no better place to indulge in some après than at the foot of the Southern Alps in Queenstown and Wanaka.

With dozens of bars all within a 1km radius, simply follow the lake’s edge or cobbled lanes and you’ll find yourself on the doorstep of many an après destination.
More lakeside après offerings await in Wanaka township, or if you’re heading down the mountain consider stopping at the iconic Cardrona pub, complete with roaring outdoor fire.
Make the most of your bach or hired accommodation by whipping up some mulled wine or buttered whisky from home. Liven things up with some retro ski gear, and après like it’s 1980.

Networking
101 WORDS MELINDA COLLINS
As the adage goes, “It’s not what you know but who you know”, but how do you get to know the who? Here’s some top networking tips for breaking the ice this conference and event season. TIME TO SHINE
MAGIC NUMBER
PREPARE YOUR PITCH
FANCY A FOLLOW-UP?
COOL, CALM AND CONVERSATIONAL
Attendees generally walk out of an event with a stack of business cards, so if you want to stand out from the crowd, creative cards will leave a lasting impression. Imagine a landscaping business card that sprouts tiny trees when wet!
Set a goal for the number of people you will speak to at the event and stick to it. Throw in some curveballs like meeting five people wearing red and five with large briefcases to keep things interesting and ensure you meet a range of people.
Prepare your elevator pitch, a multi-million dollar sentence or two explaining who you are and what you do. Keep it punchy and have some icebreakers ready to keep things fun and relaxed. The more you practice, the more confident you will be.
If you meet someone at an event, follow up straight away. Let them know it was great to meet them and offer to follow up with a coffee. All relationships need a little bit of help to get going – networking relationships included.
Dread the concept of “networking”? Networking is simply the process of building relationships, not putting the hard sell on. So just relax and get to know people - the rest will come naturally. Make sure you listen so the conversation flows.

DOLCE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY
Bridal Bonanza The sentiment behind your wedding day is, undoubtedly, the most important aspect, but let’s be honest here, the bride’s entry is the moment that all in attendance are waiting for with baited breath.
T
hat perfect dress which is said to be the focus of attention on a wedding day is worn just once before being tucked away in the back of the wardrobe, never to be worn again… that is, until now. The 2020 Canterbury Bride of the Year is your chance to wear that dress again without the stress and pressure that comes with the Big Day, event founder Suzanne Carson explains. “We started the Canterbury Bride of
the Year in 2008, primarily for ladies to relive their wedding day and wear their dress again, but also to give them the opportunity to meet other brides in a relaxing environment. “These women make lifelong friends. It becomes a milestone in their life in much the same way as their wedding.” Held this year at Rydges Latimer on Sunday 27 September and in support of Canterbury Westcoast
Air Rescue, this year’s event will be packed with exciting opportunities for engaged couples. The wedding industry has come together and they will
experience their wedding suppliers in action, in real time; celebrants, vocalists, florists, décor stylists, to name a few. Opportunities to win some very exciting prizes, including a $3000 wedding dress, a bride’s party pamper session, florals for the wedding day and much more. “The event is about supporting the wedding industry, and bringing them to you, so we will be focusing on introducing bridal trends, suppliers and options.” Engaged couples will witness previous season’s brides vying for the Canterbury Bride of the Year 2020, Canterbury Bridesmaid of the Year 2020 and Canterbury Flower Girl of the Year 2020 titles, with an exceptional line-up for judges, including Dancing with the Stars’ Vanessa Cole. The evening is expected to be the wedding event of the year. Entries are still being accepted until 15 September, email wedding@weddingprofessionals. co.nz. Phone 0800 377 7800. Secrets to event success WORDS MELINDA COLLINS
Running an event without a hitch – whether you’re getting hitched or in command of a corporate soirée – requires a lot of coordination. Like any Hollywood blockbuster, the hardest work goes on behind the scenes. And an event planner can save your stress levels, tighten your budget – and more. Here’s our reasons to consider hiring some help for your wedding, event or conference. NO MORE BUDGET BLUES Despite what you may think, an experienced planner can actually bring down your costs. Sticking to budgets is what planners specialise in, and they can also help you accurately forecast those costs to avoid any hidden surprises. NEGOTIATING PROS Event planners not only have a rich network of contacts who may offer them special rates or package deals, but they are adept at having any awkward price-related conversations which may arise, so you don’t have to... STRESS LESS ...Which brings us to the next point. They do all the work, so you don’t have to. The stress and pressure of pulling off an event can reduce the shine for even the most enthusiastic host. So why not outsource that? DEVILS FOR DETAILS Seamless events are rich in details; the little touches which make a person’s day (or night) memorable. This could be physical details like name cards or dietary requirements, to ensuring seating arrangements don’t leave anyone without a familiar face nearby. Event planners live in the details, including the ones you didn’t even know existed! 42 20 August, 2020 Metropol

Tempting Fête
A travelling feast “H
ave kit, will travel” is the mantra of Twentyfour Catering. Weddings all over the South Island are a speciality, and owner and chef Chantelle Quinn can conjure the feast of your dreams anywhere, often with just two ovens and a barbeque. “We are very versatile and we have said yes to every location so far.” Chantelle works closely with couples to ensure logistics work and menus are personalised to each wedding. Chantelle remembers a groom who asked for his grandmother’s adored salted caramel and pistachio cheesecake, so she created it in minis for his guests. The food is classic French with Kiwi flavours, rustic, often with a lot of protein. Six different meats could feature throughout the reception, which goes down extremely well with rural weddings. “I love seeing a wedding guest in an exquisite dress and fascinator tucking into a lamb cutlet and going back for more.”

Changing Protocol As they say, every cloud has a silver lining. For Protocol, that meant looking at the space they had and envisaging the space it could become.
O
wner Genaea Calvert says, “COVID-19 allowed us to revisit our business and utilisation of spaces”. So, after feedback about noise travelling from the bar area, and with new social distancing practices, the restaurant was relocated to a larger and more private area. “In doing this the feedback was really positive about the quieter dining space, this led to a refurbishment and we believe
we have now created a really nice ambient area for our diners,” she says. It wasn’t just the space that got a revamp, there’s also a new lunch and dinner menu for customers to enjoy in the quieter more intimate setting or enjoy the hum and dine in the main bar area. “It’s not often you get closed for extended periods, so we took the opportunity at Level 3 when we were still unable to open to also give the
main bar a lift. We feel that we have a great team of staff and our menu provides great quality restaurantstyle dishes at reasonable prices”. The venue is still able to accommodate large groups with their second function room, now catering for a wider range and much better utilisation of space. Make Protocol your next venue for your event! Not just a pretty place
W
e’re not going to pretend that when planning an event your venue options are limited…in fact it’s quite the opposite. With so many choices out there, it can be hard to find the one that’s right for you and your guests. In order to help with the decision Metropol caught up with Tom Lawson from Larcomb Vineyard, about their place just ten minutes out of Christchurch. The vineyard showcases some of the best views the region has to offer. Which are much nicer to look at than the four walls of a conference hall in a bustling city.
Tom puts it perfectly, that with their venue it’s “not just another day at office”. Well…unless you work at a vineyard. But it’s important to remember that it’s not just a pretty place, the space has so much more to offer. Their hall is a space that can host a humble 50 to a huge 250. Not to mention it’s very flexible, you can have a whole space or - with a few separators - many. Larcomb Vineyard also offers onsite catering and bar facilities, so you only have to worry about turning up.

Dried flower trend keeps blooming Natural, rustic and romantic: The popularity of dried flowers refuses to wane in 2020. Victoria Florist’s Leanne Lovell tells us how to include the blooms at your next inspired event.
F
loral arrangements can transform an event, creating character and atmosphere. Flowers add colour, fragrance and a sense of occasion – whether to a wedding, bridal shower, baby shower, dinner party or corporate event. Leanne says dried flowers have had a recent resurgence in popularity, with the trend appearing on the radar (and many a Pinterest board) about a year ago - and is now everywhere. DRIED FLOWERS, FRESH IDEAS While dried flowers are popular as pre-made bouquets, they can also be used for custom made hanging arrangements, floor installations, wedding arches or table settings. Leanne says table settings
Handy tip:
incorporating the dried blooms are especially becoming popular. “The colours and textures are so natural and warm, they add a really romantic and vintage feel to an event, and when combined with fresh flowers you can still get that vibrancy and fragrance.”
KNOW YOUR DRIED BLOOMS With a large range of dried flowers available at Victoria Florist’s Idris Rd online and in store, Leanne says eucalyptus, hydrangeas, bunny tails, wildflowers, toi toi and proteas are especially popular choices at the moment.
LASTING MEMORIES Choosing dried helps memories last even longer. Arrangements from the day can endure as beautiful decorations for the home, or repurposed into something new. At Victoria Florists, arrangements can be remade into new bouquets or wall hangings, including on stunning hoops.
Dust your dried flowers by spraying with compressed air or by using a low speed, no heat setting on your hairdryer to avoid damaging fragile petals, stems and leaves. Ph. 03 351 7444 | www.victoriaflorists.co.nz

Making its mark P
egasus Bay has long been recognised for its top drops and now the exceptional space with its breathtaking gardens, lakes, wetlands and beautiful restaurant is making its mark as a premium event venue in Waipara. “This is a new direction for us after 30 years operating our restaurant,” says Marketing Manager Edward Donaldson, the latest generation of the Donaldson family which established Pegasus Bay in the 1980s. “We have long been approached about events packages and with about 15 acres of very well-maintained gardens, it’s a very unique location in terms of its indoor-outdoor flow, whether it’s a wedding ceremony or canapés and drinks on the lawn,” Edward says. Pegasus Bay can cater for up to 110 for a sit down meal across the restaurant and mezzanine floor; a striking space which features 100-year-old recycled rimu panelling and kauri flooring, beautiful chandeliers and Jonathan Smart Gallery artworks. Add in some of the best fine wines in the region and it’s the perfect place for any event.

A $1 million renovation of the centre has seen its former restaurant remodelled into a purpose-built function space for up to 120 people. The work made way for the brand-new Alluvial restaurant. With carparking for 80-plus vehicles, 13 motel rooms, public bar, bottle store, outdoor area and a “plug-in and go” technology system, owner Greg King says the renovations were designed so users can just turn up. “The function space includes an 85-inch smart tv for presentations, a microphone sound system for speaking, and free wi-fi. “Our team are looking forward to helping businesses and the community hold their events, so please talk to us about your needs.” Call the Tinwald Function Centre on 03 308 7505 or email manager@tinwaldtavern.co.nz

Warming up to salads
WORDS MORGAN TAIT
Gastronomically speaking, it can be a confusing time of year. Longer days and slightly balmier temperatures tell us salad season is near. But the fact we still need our jumpers and coats leaves us equally in want of warming comfort foods. Enter the warm salad: A happy medium between crisp freshness and hearty wholesomeness.
W
arm salads help administer your 5+ a day, with that comforting temperature we can’t help but crave in cooler times. Here’s some ideas for creating your own colourful, all-season salads.
LAMB AND ROAST VEGETABLES
ROAST PUMPKIN AND PEPITA
BUCKWHEAT AND BEETROOT
Healthy and hearty is covered with a Greekinspired blend of pan-fried lamb and oven roasted pumpkin, onion, and beetroot, all seasoned with cumin, chilli, and cinnamon. Add crumbed cauliflower (pan cooked for a quick 5 minutes) and pistachio, walnuts, linseed, mint leaves, and a tangy tahini dressing.
Reduce your food waste by roasting pumpkin seed pods alongside the flesh from the same vegetable. Wash and pat the seeds dry, and roast for about half the time as you do the flesh. Drizzle the finished results with honey, apple cider vinegar and top with labneh or feta, and refreshing mint.
This salad (pictured) is an easy combo of roast beetroot, sautéed mushrooms, and onion, all mixed with cooked buckwheat and topped with fresh herbs and roughly chopped, lightly toasted hazelnuts. Sprinkle with feta, or add some fried haloumi, and finish with a chef’s kiss.
Méthode Traditionnelle Limited Release Come and treat yourself to a scrumptious scallop pie or maybe an Italian eggplant pie! Fairlie Bakehouse pies in store too. Fine. Food. Fast. Takeaway Cafe and Delicatessen.

Chicken Musakhan Ingredients 1 chicken (about 1.7kg), divided into 4 pieces (1.4kg) or 1kg chicken breasts (between 4 and 6, depending on size), skin on, if you prefer 120ml olive oil, plus 2–3 tbsp extra, to finish 1 tbsp ground cumin 3 tbsp sumac ½ tsp ground cinnamon ½ tsp ground allspice 30g pine nuts 3 large red onions, thinly sliced 2–3mm thick (500g) 4 taboon breads, or any flatbread (such as Arabic flatbread or naan bread) (330g) 5g parsley leaves, roughly chopped Salt and black pepper
To serve 300g Greek-style yoghurt 1 lemon, quartered 56 20 August, 2020 Metropol
Preheat the oven to 200°C fan. Place the chicken in a large mixing bowl with 2 tablespoons of oil, 1 teaspoon of cumin, 1½ teaspoons of sumac, the cinnamon, allspice, 1 teaspoon of salt and a good grind of black pepper. Mix well to combine, then spread out on a parchment-lined baking tray. Roast until the chicken is cooked through. This will take about 30 minutes if starting with breasts and up to 45 minutes if starting with the whole chicken, quartered. Remove from the oven and set aside. Don’t discard any juices which have collected in the tray. Meanwhile, put 2 tablespoons of oil into a large sauté pan, about 24cm, and place on a medium heat. Add the pine nuts and cook for about 2–3 minutes, stirring constantly, until the nuts are golden brown. Transfer to a bowl lined with kitchen paper (leaving the oil behind in the pan) and set aside. Add the remaining 60ml of oil to the pan, along with the onions and ¾ teaspoon of salt. Return to a medium heat for about 15 minutes, stirring from time to time, until the onions
are completely soft and pale golden but not caramelised. Add 2 tablespoons of sumac, the remaining 2 teaspoons of cumin and a grind of black pepper and mix through, until the onions are completely coated. Remove from the heat and set aside. When ready to assemble the dish, set the oven to a grill setting and slice or tear the bread into quarters or sixths. Place them under the grill for about 2–3 minutes, to crisp up, then arrange them on a large platter. Top the bread with half the onions, followed by all the chicken and any chicken juices left in the tray. Either keep each piece of chicken as it is or else roughly shred it as you plate up, into two or three large chunks. Spoon the remaining onions over the top and sprinkle with the pine nuts, parsley, 1½ teaspoons of sumac and a final drizzle of olive oil. Serve at once, with the yoghurt and a wedge of lemon alongside. Extracted from ‘Falastin: a cookbook’ by Sami Tamimi and Tara Wigley (Ebury Press, $60). Tile tales WORDS MELINDA COLLINS
Move over white subway tiles, we’re introducing a whole raft of new kids on the decorating block; there’s hexagon, finger tiles, mosaic and stone and they’re rocking a kaleidoscope of colours and textures. We check out some of the latest looks snaking their way across walls and floors.
Mixed geometrics: Geometric shapes made their mark in 2019, but they’re not going anywhere in a hurry. In fact, they’re actually getting more clever and creative than ever before with trapezoid, rhombus and diamond-shaped tiles hitting the homewares sphere. Pencils and pennies: Pencil tiles or finger tiles – narrow rectangular tiles – are proving popular as accents on walls, while penny tiles – small coin-shaped tiles laid in sheets – are being used for borders, niches, accent strips or whole walls to add sparkle, depth and interest.
Industrial chic: Concrete and stone look tiles are a sleek, low maintenance, easily-installed alternative to actual concrete and stone, pairing beautifully with matte black fittings. Moroccan magic: Morocco is famed for its vibrant colours and intricate designs, so Moroccan tiles add an exotic touch to the room, either as a wall or floor covering. Darks arts: Just like the little black dress, a black bathroom is ultra chic. The dark tones work surprisingly well in small spaces and textured tiles add a sense of drama.

top. The tape can be carefully removed once the wall is touch dry. Invest in good quality tape for the best results and use a utility knife along the edges of the tape for extra clean lines if you are concerned about the top layer of paint lifting. Resene Wet N Wild has been continued from the base of the grid on to the floor while the plant pot and vase are painted Resene Jalapeno to play off
the reds in the artwork. The bedside table is in Resene Secrets, a paler and greyer shade of green than Resene Kandinsky to help it contrast the main wall colour, with a drawer in Resene Wet N Wild so that it still ties in well to the theme. The lamp and picture frame are painted Resene Half Black White. The grid pattern has also been taken on to the duvet

New Zealand Designer Bathroom Suite of the Year
Winning design trifecta A dark and masculine mood and a rustic French-inspired feminine aesthetic have seen Christchurch’s Armstrong Interiors win three bathroom awards at the prestigious 2020 Trends International Design Awards (TIDA) recently.
Angelique Armstrong Armstrong Interiors Ltd

aking out all three categories, the Christchurchbased team, led by Angelique Armstrong, was recognised for innovative design and thoughtfully chosen material palettes, which created a sense of consistency and balance across all three bathooms. Angelique received TIDA’s
New Zealand Powder Room of the Year, New Zealand Designer Bathroom Suite of the Year, and New Zealand Bathroom of the Year awards this month. She says the powder room and suite were from the same home in Auckland and were completed as part of a full home renovation with a brief to
achieve a “dark and masculine mood”. She achieved this in both rooms with a clever balance of natual materials, lighting and proportion. CDK volcanic bluestone is used on the walls, giving a unique textured finish with natural colour variations.
CDK Stones’ Myles Spicer says darker tiles is an emerging trend for clients looking for “a moody, soft feel” with a touch of luxury. He says natural products not only add earthy, opulent textures but can be manipulated to any desired finish. When it comes to care and maintenance,

Armstrong Interiors was recognised for innovative design and thoughtfully chosen material palettes, which created a sense of consistency and balance across all three winning bathrooms
CDK Stone is the New Zealand agent for German-based company, Lithofin, which specialises in natural stone care, he says. The master suite also uses CDK Stone Neolith vanities and shower ceramic panels, cabinetry, benchtop and basins, and the powder room uses a fabricated Neolith trough vanity basin. Reclaimed 150-year-old French oak flooring ties the master suite together, and rough sawn timber cabinetry creates “an organic, moody feel” in the powder room. The third bathroom recognised in the awards is, “a rustic French-inspired bathroom with a charming feminine aesthetic which balances tradition with modern comforts,” says Angelique. “We used a traditional neutral-toned palette with feature tiles, enhanced by dark timber shutters, a custom-made solid oak vanity and cupboard, and brushed nickel Axor tapware and shower fittings.” The wall tiles have an almost distressed and tiered look, achieved with artfully detailed Crea
Stories and Crea Ash behind the bath and porcelain Pearl Ret tiles for the floor, all supplied and installed by Brymac Tiles to exacting high standards. Angelique says she has extreme confidence in Brymac Tiles, and recommends its vast range and quality installation service. General Manager James Thomson says he always keeps Angelique abreast of new styles. “When I showed her the Crea tiles a while ago, she took them hostage back to her studio to wait for the perfect job to be used – and this is certainly it,” says James. “It was fantastic to see the end result.” Angelique says the overall space is very open and easy to navigate, responding to the client’s brief for easy wheelchair access. The judges were impressed by the attractive balance of traditional and contemporary elements within a highly functioning setting. eing able to tell a story is of fundamental importance to the architectural design process. Doing it well requires responsiveness, patience and a willingness to be open to possibility. Developing and communicating narratives through design - ultimately expressed as built projects - is both fulfilling and enjoyable. The process is open and informal, involving architect and client in an evolving two-way journey, each building a deeper understanding of the other. The architect’s goal is to gain a complete picture of the client, their goals and aspirations, as well as the key features of site and setting. Effectively, the “story” grows from this into a series of references which then inform a highly personalised design response. Out of this process, a unifying narrative may emerge to drive the design forward. It can be inspired by something very simple, like a beautiful natural object or historic artefact, or even a striking geological feature. A good architect knows how to recognise a good design story when it comes along and will use it to give the home texture and shape, as well as an anchor in the landscape. In our practice, we often find ourselves designing homes that can achieve a specific connection with the surrounding landscape. They may point to physical landmarks or frame a spectacular view. Environmental factors build the narrative
further with sun and wind, local weather conditions and topography all feeding into the emerging story line. Many other threads shape the design story too, such as client preferences around materials and colours, along with functionality, environmental and budgetary considerations. The end goal is to create inspiring architecture and an unparalleled experience of home for the client.
It is very satisfying to reach the end of a project with the client expressing a sense of real ownership over their new home. They understand the story behind it, how it all functions and fits together and why their home is so uniquely special to them. This approach, so very powerful in residential architecture, is doubly useful in commercial architecture, where story telling can form part of the brand message. A clear narrative behind the design will help ensure delivery of great results, whether a stand out hospitality experience or a strongly functional industrial workspace. There is a balance to be struck between being too literal in a design story versus taking a more subtle approach. Success lies in designing for uniqueness, carefully weaving together elements that are important to the client and relevant to site and project purpose. Architecture is, beyond doubt, highly subjective. Some buildings are designed for aesthetics alone yet ultimately more satisfying is architecture that carries a story within itself of people, ways of life, of the landscape and the environment. This, for me, is what makes the design process so exciting. Our stories are rich and diverse, fuelling creative possibilities and opportunities that can contribute to truly remarkable outcomes. www.allso.co.nz

Q&A
New Season Refresh McKenzie & Willis have released their brand new Linen Edit for Spring/Summer 2020. This curated collection of new designs and ‘best sellers’ will have something beautiful to look perfectly at home in your bedroom. We caught up with the McKenzie & Willis linen’s buyer, Jill Coleman, to find out a little more about the Spring/Summer Edit highlights and the latest in linen trends. Who is your Spring/Summer Edit for? It’s for anyone with a passion for linen! It has something for everyone, contemporary designs featuring neutral accents with simple accessories for a relaxed bedroom to vibrant floral designs for a bold look that will make a real statement. The Spring/Summer Edit is our way of showcasing the latest releases to our collection and perfect timing if you are considering a fresh new look as you start to shed some of the layers ahead of the warmer months. What are the highlights of the new designs? Like everything linen, the highlights are completely open to interpretation! In my opinion the bold new patterns by MM Linen have to be a highlight- they will make a statement as the feature piece in your bedroom. The introduction of heavy woven fabrics and plaid designs from Bianca Lorenne is new and a move to a contemporary trend which is different for them. They have also introduced their new feature collection, which is always a highly anticipated release each year, with a nod to Japanese Gardens- ‘Kuren’ is one of their best yet!
The ‘Best Sellers’ is a new feature- why have you included these? The ‘Best Sellers’ feature pages have been added to showcase our most popular linen designs and accessories to provide a little inspiration if you don’t know where to start or to help with the perfect finishing touch to pair with one of our new designs. We have also included our bestselling linen essentials so anyone starting their linen from the base up can see what features are important in these essential pieces, what makes these particular ones so popular and basically to help take the guess work out. What trends should we keep an out for this spring/summer? It would have to be, always choose linen made from 100% natural fibres. Whether that be cotton or linen, find what you like the feel of best and you are making a great choice for a good night’s sleep. What are the big trends in bed linen this spring? The wide range gold tones, both as a feature colour and as an accent, is a beautiful trend. The MM Linen Lark duvet is a great example

of this with its opulent gold base and exotic print. Bianca Lorenne provide the perfect accent pieces and finishing touches to this trend, with their stunning cushions and comforters. We are also seeing interesting mixes of colours that aren’t traditionally ‘summery’ with lighter tones. The Mizumi Bedspread by Bianca Lorenne in Dark Prussian Blue is a stunning deep blue which, when paired with lighter colour layers, creates the perfect spring/summer look. What is your favourite spring/summer trend? My favourite trend is linen that is calming, comfortable and a little bit couture- and really, what more could you want! This trend is so open to interpretation which is one of the things I love the most about it- it is emotive and personal, design led by your own taste and aesthetic. Cushions can play a big part in creating your couture look with textures, fringing and patterns in your favourite colourway a great place to start. My absolute favourite piece to achieve this look is the stunning silk Migiwa cushion by Bianca Lorenne- pair it with the Tramonto comforter in Antique Gold and you have a winner!

I’ve just always loved doing this stuff.” Jim the Builder is known for its sleek award-winning new builds, including Master Builders House of the Year Golds in 2019 and 2016 for stunning houses on St Andrews Hill and Fendalton, respectively. In a city where many people have been faced with the question of rebuilding or restoring their homes, Jim the Builder’s Jim Stenberg makes the case for choosing to renovate. Photo by Jamie Armstrong Photography delivering high quality new builds, he also prides himself on getting people back into renovated or restored homes. In 2015, a restored Sumner bungalow also earned Jim the Builder a Gold in the aforementioned awards. “It can be quite an emotional journey getting people back into their family homes if they’ve been through the challenges of the earthquake insurance process,” he says. “It can be a long and stressful process and then seeing them come back to a home which they know and love, is hugely rewarding and makes me immensely proud of my team.” Jim and his team work with architects, engineers, designers and subcontractors to bring projects to life, no matter the scale or
complexity. With in-house project managers, quantity surveyors and a health and safety officer, his team track timeframes and budgets to keep homeowners in the loop at every step, and to ensure all stages of the project align. He says the team’s business philosophy is building and maintaining relationships with clients. He’ll often be in touch with clients years before their work begins, helping them navigate lengthy insurance battles. “Building to us is going on a journey with our clients together, resulting in a friendship and even a cheeky beer on their deck from time to time.” Contact Jim the Builder on 021 444 958 or at info@jtb.net.nz

he stunning hillside home features immaculate bluestone sourced from the site itself and tessellated throughout the property. Removed and remastered by Stone Works stonemasons at their Woolston site, the rocks - now returned serve as mosaic cladding on the original side of the home, as patio tiling, dry stone garden walls, and – perhaps most strikingly - as exterior and interior columns. Designed by Collins and Harman and built in the early 1910s, the two-storeyed residence had an extension added the late 2000s, just in time for the Canterbury earthquakes – which left both the original and new in disarray. Now, its extensive interior and exterior renovations led by Jim the Builder have preserved the heritage character by adding steel structural supports; a hydronic heating system installed by Central Heating NZ over 75mm Integra Panels and covered by Calcium Sulphate Ezy Mix screed; energy efficient window glazing, and a Rockcote Integra lightweight concrete façade cladding system. Company Director Jim Stenberg says the 18-month job required a precarious lift of the house so seemingly endless tonnes of loose rubble could be hand dug from the old foundations and removed via petrol-powered wheelbarrows along a custom scaffolding walkway. “We had to dig until we found solid
Photo by Jamie Armstrong Photography ground, which was 3.5 metres below floor level. From there, it was essentially a rebuild which also reinstated the house’s original character.” A character which is most obvious in the gothic-esque stylised blue stone columns and an exterior bay window, which has become an interior feature since the extension was built around it. Downstairs, a refit kitchen and dining area leads into a collection of sitting rooms: a sunroom with adjacent pergola; a ladies’ lounge with restored wooden panelling, and a gentlemen’s lounge which looks through the original bay window back into the living area. Inside, the bluestone palette has been
emphasised by Auckland-based interior designer Peter Lloyd, who worked closely with the owners to adorn the home with statement elements. A denim blue feature wall begins in the kitchen and continues upstairs where the master and children’s bedrooms are. A chandelier hangs in the “ladies’ bathroom”. Exquisite tiles line the bathroom. Glass balustrades run up the internal stairs and along exterior balconies, ensuring the ethereal views along the coast and out to sea, where dolphins are known to chase herrings in the bay below, remain uninterrupted. IS IN THE
The topic of soil doesn’t sound as exciting as talking about stunning strongly-scented roses or a bumper crop of sweet strawberries, it’s actually more important. Terra Viva’s Peter Worsp tells us why.
PREPARATION IS KEY Like most things in life, the preparation determines the end results - and this applies to success in the garden. The better the soil, the better the results, so avoid the temptation to just rush ahead and bung the plants in. Plants are just like us – we thrive in the right conditions and we suffer in adverse conditions. If the soil is wellprepared plants get off to a quick start and continue down that path. So, what makes for wellprepared soil? Digging over to approximately 30cm (about a spade’s depth), breaking up the clods, and adding compost, real blood and bone, a dusting of lime, sheep pellets, and gypsum in compacted heavy soils. Well dug-over soft soil allows the roots to get out quickly to anchor the plant and draw in nutrients which translates to growth.
One of the top gardens in Christchurch positively glows with health and productivity and the keen gardener’s secret is: “Generous and regular applications of compost”. Compost adds fertility, improves drainage/aeration, texture, and encourages earthworms whose actions and secretions add to the soil’s quality. Poor, heavy clay soils can be turned into fertile productive soil by adding gypsum and compost. Gypsum breaks up heavy compacted soil, adds calcium and sulphate nutrients, and improves the effectiveness of fertilisers. Using compost at the same time stops the clay particles sticking together again.
FLOURISH WITH FERTILISER
PLANNING WITH pH
Most plants have specific fertiliser needs so getting the right fertiliser mix is important. Plants use potash to produce flowers and fruit which is why rose food has a very high potash level; too much nitrogen gives lush foliage growth but minimal flowering. Conversely, lawn food has no potash but high nitrogen to give strong foliage growth, i.e. lawns. Sheep pellets are still one of the most effective and popular fertilisers, improving fertility, soil texture, and encouraging earthworms.
Soil pH measures alkalinity versus acidity in the soil, with most soil being somewhere near neutral. However, there is a group of plants which need acidic soil to thrive, including rhododendrons, azaleas, blue hydrangeas, daphne, camellias, and blueberries, and using acid fertiliser will keep them happy. Use a light sprinkling of lime to create alkaline conditions for lavender, delphiniums, lilacs, hostas, and sedums. Get the soil right, get the results!
COMPOST, COMPOST, COMPOST!

Thyme to plant WORDS MELINDA COLLINS
We can all benefit from a little more “thyme” in the garden. So we’ve pulled together our top tips for thyme; a kitchen staple that’s easy to grow, low maintenance, and adds a serious touch of taste to stuffings, slow-cooked meals, soups, sauces, pesto and herb breads
A
hardy, drought-tolerant herb which can be planted in gardens or pots, thyme comes in a number of varieties, the classic being Thymus vulgaris, with its full, rich flavour making it the popular choice for casseroles and roasts. Growing thyme from seed can take work, so it’s best to go with seedlings planted in free-draining soil or gravel in spring or autumn. The popular perennial does best in well-drained soil in full sun, thriving with some protection from cold winds and wet winters. It loves a good trim postflowering to encourage new growth, and to help your plants last. Once established, thyme won’t need watering and it’s winter hardy, so you can pick leaves year round. Use thyme fresh, dried or preserved in butter, vinegar or oil. Pro tip: it can be used to make cough medicine, a hair rinse or a skin cleanser!

Andrea and Peter Imboden from Jaz It Up had been selling spec homes in 2016 when Andrea realised it was the styling she enjoyed most. “We’ve sold many houses over the years and I’ve styled them to get the wow factor. They’ve all sold really quickly.” When the professional photographers and real estate agents pointed out this very serious styling skill, the couple decided to go all in and they established Jaz It Up in 2017, doing exactly what the name says.

Repairing the Repairs T
he EQC $300m policy for homeowners of over-cap on-sold properties in Canterbury enabled affected homeowners to apply for an ex gratia Government payment to have their homes repaired. The payment was also available if the same owners had the home, but believed the repairs done post-earthquakes were not satisfactory, or overlooked levelling. WD Build and Hardy Projects have been at the forefront of this process, helping homeowners get the correct repairs. Recent client Ben McLean is delighted with the result he has
received, “working with company owners Mitchell James and Paul Hardy was so easy – they made the process really straightforward when we didn’t have a clue about what was required.” The house required foundation repair, partial relevel, new flooring, tiling in the bathroom, internal painting, electrics brought to code, and the underfloor insulation which had been noncompliant all replaced. The garage had its foundations dug out and replaced as well as blockwork repaired. “The house now looks amazing,” says Ben “and the estimate of four to six

Dennis Chippindale’s passion for living on hills together with his desire for easy living combine in his own home high above Church Bay, looking across Whakaraupo/ Lyttelton Harbour towards Quail Island and the Port Hills.
H
aving lived on hill sites in Wellington, Dennis loved the views but disliked houses spread over many levels. As a Principal Architect at Stephenson and Turner, Dennis was able to design his own home to be single level so “it follows the contours of the site so it is long and thin.” Artfully blended into the landscape and clad in cedar, the house is barely visible on the hill and from the roadside, “We love that its modernist and extended shape blends in a bit like a DoC hut,” says Dennis.
An outside room provides alfresco living with protection from the muscular easterly wind. Sustainable and energy efficient, the house - which won a 2020 Local Architecture Award - more than twice code for insulation. The 200-degree view is a favourite, but boulders the size of cars - a legacy of the Mt Herbert lava flow - that had to be shifted, have morphed from a serious construction challenge to an authentic character landscape feature Dennis and partner Sahra love. The design was realised by residential and commercial construction experts Proceed Building. Director and qualified Joiner Ian Mayer says: “The project had a lot of detail, from the birch ply and cedar panelling, to the oak trusses and maple veneered doors, which required a great deal of skill and time to get the detail perfect. “The curved bookshelf, bathroom and wardrobe joinery and shelving were made on-site and installed by the team. It was an exciting journey working with clients Dennis and Sahra.” A favourite characteristic of the build for Ian is the way the house curves into the hillside - that was a complex aspect of the project as well. “It is a beautiful location, however hill-work provides unusual challenges, and the landscape evolves as you work on it,” says Ian. “We are grateful to our experienced team and subcontractors for their dedication and skill put into the project.”

A Christchurch architect has contributed to Banks Peninsula’s landscape with his penchant for eye-catching modernism.
T
im Nees hails from Wellington where he designed his national award-winning family home in the weather-lashed environs of Breaker’s Bay. Since 2014 the respected architect has operated New Work Studio from his Christchurch abode - a juxtaposition of white-painted forms, above the Taylors Mistake landscape. “My father loved modernism, and he had like-minded architect friends. When it is what you grew up with, you can’t help but be strongly influenced.” Tim’s other Banks Peninsula masterpiece recently won a 2020 Canterbury Architecture Award for off-the-grid retreat Houhere with its striking saw-tooth roofline and use of natural timbers. Now his next client’s dream home is proudly but privately tucked into a rare parcel of Governors Bay land overlooking the harbour. The four hectares are unable to be subdivided, so the amazing site called for a timeless but modern design full of thought and detail, that made the most of the sweeping views. “My clients had a modest budget, so the new house is a modest 220sqm, with a single cladding type applied everywhere,” Tim says. “The land was purchased after the original house was destroyed in the earthquakes. Ngāi Tahu was consulted
during the careful excavation, as ancient Māori walking tracks had been recorded on the land. “The two levels are built on a flat knoll, capturing the afternoon sun, with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the absolutely stunning Lyttleton Harbour views, and the dramatic hilltop silhouettes beyond.” Garaging wasn’t deemed essential, as the long driveway through native flora provided the perfect hideaway. One timber has been used extensively, sustainably milled Southern Beech, an untreated hardwood from the West Coast, used in various grades, with a natural oil-based stain for the cladding, upstairs flooring, staircase, ceilings and deck - all sourced from Health Based Building, who also provided the insulation. “They wanted a really comfortable warm and highly insulated home, with an integrated heat-pump system.” Tim says it resembles a big wooden boat from the side, with outdoor handrails in rusted Corten steel with an abstract leaf cut-out pattern. The ground level, with three modest-sized bedrooms, has polishedconcrete slab underfoot with timber ceilings to soften. The main bathroom incorporates a timber surrounded alcove for deep-bath soaks against a watery vista.
A statement open staircase of timber and steel draws the eye up to the spacious open-plan kitchen and living area. The couple’s bespoke design wish list includes a large laundry and a yoga studio with a framed picture window - creating the ultimate meditative and inspirational retreat.

It has been a long time coming, but finally Subaru has added a spot of hybrid drive to its line-up. Meet the XV e-Boxer Hybrid. But how Metropol 230720 - Half Pg CX-30.pdf 1 16/07/2020 9:44:03 AM does it stack up? WORDS BEN SELBY
he XV is already a great soft to medium off-road practical package, but now thanks to Subaru’s e-Boxer Hybrid setup, you can throw in economy, too. The 2.0 four-cylinder boxer engine produces 110kW and the addition of a 12.3kW battery pack. Like most hybrids, it is self-charging and regenerates energy when braking. Subaru’s SLT gearbox perform really well and, with the hybrid package, achieves a claimed 6.5L/100km. Inside sits a 6.5-inch infotainment display, which could be a tad bigger to be honest. However, you do get niceties like Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Digital Radio, and Bluetooth. Your surroundings are also quite cushy and comfortable. Subaru’s Eyesight driver safety system is also in attendance. Power delivery from the e-Boxer is very smooth and you feel quite planted at speed, especially in corners. Activate Subaru’s X-Mode and you are climbing every mountain and fording every stream (within reason). At $42,490, the Hybrid is $5000 more than the petrol XV Sport. However, the combination of frugal economy and fine handling characteristics makes this long overdue addition to Subaru’s family very

The Honda Civic RS Sport Sensing Sedan was one of the biggest surprises of last year. A strong turbo VTEC powertrain, oodles of kit, and great driving dynamics put it on par with the very best in the small sedan segment. Now for 2020, the Civic Hatch gets the RS Sport Sensing treatment, and here is how it stacks up.
he tenth generation Civic has always been striking, and for the Sensing, there are subtle styling tweaks which have a certain whiff of Civic Type R about them. These include a new rear diffuser, lower roofline and 18-inch sports alloys. Oh, and a new sports exhaust. Under the bonnet sits the same 1.5L turbocharged VTEC four pot in the Sensing Sedan. This means 127kW and 220Nm of torque. In Sport mode, the torque kicks in at low revs when you plant your boot, which makes for a nice surprise when sauntering through the twisty stuff. Honda’s seven-speed CVT box is back, and performs well enough, though I would love to be able to swap cogs myself. Honda claim fuel consumption of 6.1L/100km. I found myself averaging 7.2L/100km most of the time. Quite frugal indeed, especially in ECO mode. Inside you sit low and snug. The driving position is nigh on perfect
and everything is within easy reach. The Sensing part of the name stands for Honda’s Sensing Safety package. This means active cruise control, lane keep assist, forward collision warning, lane departure mitigation, and automatic high beam headlights. Other tech includes Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, reversing camera, parking sensors all round, and a left-wing mirror blind spot camera which activates on the infotainment screen every time you indicate left. You can cram 340 litres of whatever into the boot and rear seat passengers, providing you aren’t of the lanky kind, can find good head and legroom. The Honda Civic Hatch RS Sport Sensing is not a hot hatchback, but more a “warm” one. Its level of tech, comfort and the ability to give you a spirited drive on command means this one certainly needs checking out. www.honda.co.nz

Sublime wagon, cool ride WORDS BEN SELBY
Wagons will always be much cooler than SUVs. One manufacturer whose history is littered with wagons is Volvo. Here is their new V60 Estate T8 AWD R Design, and it is something mighty special.

and Volvo’s City Safe braking system. My test car, valued at $114,900, also came with the optional $6500 Premium Pack. This means tinted windows, full panoramic sunroof, and a rather epic Bowers and Wilkins Premium Sound System, which is the closest you will get to hearing the works of Hans Zimmer live. Pop the boot and you find another Volvo wagon hallmark, space, 529L of it. On the move, you barrel along in distinct quiet. Weighing in at 2200kg, it is a hefty fella, but very planted. Select “Polestar Engineered Mode” and the barrelling becomes a rapid waft, while no track day hero, the T8 can cover ground in quick succession. In the bends, her steering is responsive but somewhat lacking in feedback. That said, blasting point to point is not what the V60 T8 is about. Will the V60 T8 R-Design be a big seller for Volvo? Probably not. Is it still a sublime wagon for those who want something totally unique? Absolutely.
he T8 part means a 2.0 four-cylinder petrol engine with supercharging and turbocharging, coupled to a plug-in 64kW battery pack, electric motors, and eight-speed Geartronic automatic. Power figures of 311kW/670Nm are very generous, and 0 to 100km/h time of 4.5 seconds is sports car quick. Being a plug in, the V60 can run up to 40km on just electric power, ideal for the daily commute. Outside there are no flashy bits or carbon fibre add-ons here, just subtle details like the “Thor’s Hammer” daytime running lights. The R Design 19inch five triple spoke alloys, front grille, gloss black wing mirrors are the only indication of hidden sporting prowess. Inside, a very clear and concise 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system greets you. Kit includes Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, 360 Reversing Camera, Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Information System with Steer Assist, Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Keep Assist, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, Park Assist,
