In a state of evolution, the Garden City’s architectural typology is nothing short of distinct. New building façades play with eye catching angles, colours and materials – a welcome addition to the archetypal concrete and stone buildings known to the city, as we usher in a new era of forward-thinking urban architecture which pays homage to the past.

Vive le cinéma After last year’s hiatus thanks to Covid-19, the French Film Festival Aotearoa returns to Christchurch next month. Returning for its 15th year, the country’s second largest film festival invites Kiwis to come along for a glass of red and a very French night at the movies.
he Christchurch season runs from June 24 to July 7. The programme is a carefully curated selection of more than 20 of the best French film releases from 2020/21 put together by festival director, Fergus Grady. The new team at the helm has worked closely with the French Embassy to bring great films to the French community in New Zealand as well as Francophile Kiwis. “We are about bringing a world of stories to our corner of the Pacific and we’re thrilled to be bringing the best of French films to New Zealand cinema-goers,” says Grady. The programme has been designed to take audiences on an incredible journey through cinéma français, showcasing the crème de la crème of French cinema and its filmmakers. From comedies and thrillers, to dramas and documentaries, the 2021 French Film Festival Aotearoa is a proud celebration of French culture and storytelling. The ‘tour de cinema’ kicks off in Auckland, Wellington, Tauranga, Masterton and Nelson on June 10. Spanning four weeks, the festival will visit 12 cities and towns across both the North and South Islands. Tickets and the full programme are available now at www.frenchfilmfestival.co.nz.

Christchurch’s inaugural Tīrama Mai lighting event will celebrate Matariki in the heart of the city and in New Brighton.
hristchurch City Council Events and Arts Manager Tanya Cokojic says lighting events have proved popular in the city in the past and it makes sense to have a festival that marks New Zealand’s own unique culture and complements other Matariki events in the city. “Tīrama Mai, meaning to illuminate or bring light, is the first time we have held a lighting event specifically to coincide with Matariki. We want it to grow to become a highly collaborative festival, with mana whenua guiding cultural elements and design.” Residents and visitors to the city will be able to explore the lighting trails from 6pm 11pm every night. Installations will be located around The Arts Centre, Christchurch Art Gallery, Worcester Boulevard, Victoria Square, Otakaro Avon River Precinct, New Regent Street and New Brighton. Panels telling the story of Matariki will be put up in the central city a couple of weeks before the event starts. Tīrama Mai will conclude with a Matariki fireworks display on Saturday, July 10 in New Brighton. “We’ve moved our big fireworks display, usually held each November, to July. Holding the fireworks earlier in the evening means families don’t need to be out so late and allows people to visit New Brighton restaurants and cafés before or after the show.” Ms Cokojic says over time the event will expand the current street theatre offering and include exhibitions and exploration of moving images and projections. “Ultimately we would like to expand into other areas in the Banks Peninsula and the city also.” Tīrama Mai is just one of the events the council has planned during the winter months. Other events include music festival Go Live! and KidsFest – which this year celebrates 30 years of delighting and entertaining Christchurch children. The council is distributing a Winter What’s On? events guide to all Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri primary schools, libraries and service centres and some cafés at the end of May, outlining the many other events organisations are also holding during winter.

He’s no ordinary thing WORDS LYNDA PAPESCH
When a close friend needed help, Opshop frontman Jason Kerrison did something he knows well, going on stage and fronting the recent Man Down benefit concert, the band’s first live performance in Christchurch in nine years.

Fast facts Opshop garnered nine Platinum albums, nine NZ Music Awards and the prestigious APRA Silver Scroll Award for Song of the Year. After the 2010 major earthquake in Canterbury, JK worked with Paul Ellis to create the Band Together concert in Hagley Park, Christchurch, to raise spirits in his hometown. In 2011, JK was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, for Services to Music. He appeared on the Team Ball Player Thing single that raised money for Cure Kids in 2015. He was a judge on New Zealand’s Got Talent in 2012, and the X Factor in 2015.
he rest of his tight-knit group of friends also rallied around to help when they heard their mate, Gorilla Biscuit bassist and soundman Jason Kokiri (aka Koko), had suffered a stroke and would be off work for some time. Opshop was joined on stage by Gorilla Biscuit, the Christchurch band that helped three of its members hone their musical skills in the early-90s. “In our early days at the Dux, we were Gorilla Biscuit. We’ve all stayed friends to this day,” says Jason (aka JK) who grew up in Christchurch and still has family and many friends here. Gorilla Biscuit’s members are: JK (Opshop, The Babysitters Circus, The Marley Allstars, Fungi), Jason Fa’afoi (The Stereo Bus, Good Laika), Jason “Koko” Kokiri, Aubrey Tupai, Clinton Harris (Opshop, The Feelers, AutoMatic 80s, Carly Binding), Leighton Faulkner, Bobby Kennedy (Opshop, The Stereo Bus, Neil Finn, AutoMatic 80s), and Vahid Qualls. His friend’s health crisis hit JK hard. “What has happened with Koko makes me very conscious of my mortality, and that of others, my family and friends. In the scheme of life, it has been a real wake-up call,” he says. Now resident in Northland near Kaitaia, JK lives on a self-proclaimed mountain surrounded by beautiful hills and bush. He continues to write, record, and selectively perform, in between making roads, raising alpacas and projects such planning, designing, and building a tiny home. Then there is the violin which he once started to learn and is keen to pick up again, “to violently unleash” the music in it and him. Who knows; it might even feature in his next Christchurch gig. Christchurch holds a special place in his heart; both a historical and a hysterical connection, he explains. “I’ve been so lucky with my friends. Many I have known since growing up in Christchurch, since I was 11 through
to 17 and now I’m in my mid-40s and they are still there. It’s nice to touch base and catch up with them as often as I can.” Aside from his music, JK supports several causes such as Cure Kids, Starship Hospital and more recently added a rescue dog to his family. A “Kaitaia Special”, the pup (Panda) was discovered in a local forest and found a new home with the JK and his partner Adele Krantz a few weeks ago. Now life is a 145 hectare farm and native forest, with alpacas, horses, cats and dogs. As with many others, the Covid-19 pandemic gave birth to a radically changed lifestyle for JK. “Previously I was often on stage and away more than I was home. Lockdown meant I had time to make a few changes.” The musician developed a keen interest in crypto currency, investing in it and now has turned that interest into a pastime while he also writes his next album, due out by Christmas. “I’m really excited about it. The music is different to anything I have done before so I am a bit nervous about it.” Since the pandemic, his style of composing has changed, he says, from writing with a band to writing with headphones and synthesisers. “I’ve been listening to a lot of Blondie. Kate Bush and the like. As a result, the new album is more 80s synthetic cyber punk pop with a grooving organic layer.” Also in the offing is a 360 degree virtual reality interactive music video that JK is developing with a colleague ex Weta Workshop. Based around a running narrative, the music video includes a virtual reality component. Players with VR headsets will be able search for collectibles inside the actual music video and win JK token, a crypto currency which they can then use in the JK environment to purchase everything from concert tickets to exclusive releases in Non Fungible Tokens. In between all of that there’s still time to look out for his mates and his pet causes.

comedic encore WORDS LYNDA PAPESCH
Comedic minstrel Tim Minchin is set to raise the roof at the Christchurch Town Hall on Friday June 25 with his special brand of entertainment. A singing satirist, Minchin is widely known for his unique style, blending comedy, acting and singing into a lively performance, using all his own material.
14 27 May, 2021 Metropol
E
nglish born and Australian raised, Minchin started touring New Zealand in 2019, until the Covid-19 pandemic knocked it on the head. “This is the encore to that tour. and I’m especially thrilled to be coming to Christchurch. I hear a lot about it from others, about the rebuild, the amenities such as the town hall, and the people. “My hope is that people in Christchurch are just as excited to come and see and hear me, to laugh and cry, and enjoy.” Minchin is not your standard frontman. He talks a lot more than the average musician, sings his own songs, recites his own poetry and opens up about life in the real world. The 2019 tour was his first for eight years, before which time he dedicated himself more to song writing, composing music and stage shows such as the 2010 hit Matilda the Musical for which he wrote the music and lyrics.
On stage now, he’s into anecdotal recitations, stand-up comedy and singing. “In the old days, I would write about my anxieties, about what frustrated me,” he says. “Now it’s tending to be about more slice of life, songs about what happens around me, about cheese, public shaming, critical rather than political statements.” He still includes some of his old comedy favourites in his shows, but now also new songs that he describes as “heavy” and that tell a story. “There’s quite a few songs off my new album, some angrier than usual.” He describes his act as a “funny cabaret show” and sees himself primarily as a musician and songwriter as opposed to a comedian. “My songs just happen to be funny.” Explaining the ethos behind his singular style, he previously said: “I’m a good musician for a comedian and I’m a good comedian for a musician but if I had to do any of them in isolation I dunno!” On stage he cuts a distinctive figure, typically barefoot with wild hair and heavy eye makeup, often juxtaposed with a suit and tails, and a grand piano. Shedding his footwear makes him feel more comfortable, while his eye make-up helps to emphasise his features, gestures and expressions to audiences. Much of his look and persona is about “treading that line between mocking yourself and wanting to be an iconic figure. Mocking the ridiculousness and completely unrealistic dream of being an iconic figure.”
Did you know… Minchin started learning piano aged eight but gave it up after three years. He started again after he began writing music with his brother, guitarist Dan Minchin. He has performed live comedy internationally, and appeared on television in Australia, Britain, and the United States Minchin was educated at Christ Church Grammar School in Perth He attended the University of Western Australia and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts before moving to Melbourne in 2002 His show Darkside launched him into the public eye, achieving critical success at the 2005 Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the 2005 Edinburgh Fringe Festival In 2013, Minchin played the role of rock star Atticus Fetch on Showtime’s Californication A documentary film about him, Rock N Roll Nerd, was released theatrically in 2008 and broadcast by ABC1 in 2009. In 2013, the University of Western Australia awarded Minchin an honorary Doctorate of Letters degree for his contribution to the arts In 2015, he was awarded a second honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts Minchin was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2020.

Gold Coast go tos WORDS JESS MURRAY
It doesn’t take a crystal ball to see that Australia is going to be the number one holiday destination of choice, and vice versa. Whether you have a trip planned or need a bit more convincing, here are Metropol’s top picks for when you go for Gold.

Numerous amusement and theme parks are dotted throughout the metropolitan region. Hide from the heat at Wet ‘n’ Wild, admire the animals at Sea World or chase the thrill at Dreamworld.
A shopaholics paradise, Pacific Fair Shopping Centre towers over our local malls with a whopping 400 specialty stores. It’s easy to see why it’s one of Australia’s largest shopping centres.

If you’re afraid of heights… it may be best to sit this one out. Visit the SkyPoint Observation Deck for a 360-degree view from the 77th floor of the Q1 building.
Calling all thrill seekers! Hold on to your hats, glasses, and anything on your head because Jetboat Extreme can take you on a 55-minute tour. 360-degree spins included.

For nature enthusiasts
Bordering beach towns
If you’re a lover of wildlife and nature, then the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is the destination of choice. Cuddle with koalas, feed kangaroos and lorikeets and take in the beauty of the 27-hectare rainforest.
On the cusp of New South Wales and the Gold Coast sits the cool (pun intended) beach town of Coolangatta. Take in the sights and let out a breath because it’s time to relax.
Surf’s up!
All things water
If you love chasing a wave, make your way to Burleigh Heads. Considered one of the Coast’s most-loved surf spots, it is great for first timers or professionals.
Naturally, with the hotter weather you’re going to get in the water. The man-made Wave Break Island offers a great backdrop for kayak and snorkel tours.

First for agricultural training
Numerous factors should be considered in finding the right place to study, then choosing the right qualification which will get you to where you want to go in a career. Telford has been skilfully shaping farming futures for more than 50 years, producing well-rounded, successful graduates. Here are three reasons why Telford is a great choice for agricultural training...
Living the Telford experience Telford graduates often comment on the supportive environment they enjoyed while studying there, with most living on-site, forging lifelong friendships with other students through the easy camaraderie of a close-knit campus community. Accessible tutors are frequently acknowledged as mentors – they will definitely know your name and encourage you get hands-on with your learning, and the smaller class sizes equate to
more connectedness with both tutors and classmates. Graduate Lisa Bonenkamp says one of the most rewarding aspects of Telford was the other students and the tutors. “You make lifelong friendships and there are people who I keep in regular contact with. It was such an incredible, supportive place to learn in and I would recommend it to anyone looking at making a career in agriculture,” she said.
Commitment to technology The Tenstar Tractor Simulator is just one example of how Telford students get ahead in their field – by training on this one-of-a kind for agricultural education in New Zealand, practising driving skills before ever setting foot inside a real tractor. It enables students
to practice scenarios and master techniques, benefiting in safety outcomes, clocking up more seat time, and gaining experience with a wider array of implements and settings than would otherwise be possible in real-life situations.
SIT Zero Fees Scheme The SIT Zero Fees Scheme (ZFS) turns 20 this year, and SIT’s dynamic thinking continues to be the hallmark of New Zealand’s southern-most tertiary institute as it looks to the future. Savvy students who enrol at Telford can save thousands of dollars, achieving their qualification and setting themselves up for success after graduation, less inhibited by student debt.
Make the call today and discover why Telford has what it takes for your training needs. 22 27 May, 2021 Metropol
The Government’s Targeted Training and Apprenticeship Fund (TTAF) is also providing free training opportunities, guaranteed until December 2022 – there’s still time to enrol and train. Some of Telford’s most popular courses are available under TTAF. Check out the link below, and look for the TTAF logo on a range of qualifications: www.sit.ac.nz/Telford.

Growing New Zealand’s economy Startup investments in New Zealand rose to $157 million by the end of last year, up substantially from $20m in 2006. The latest Startup Investment Report from PwC and the Angel Association (AANZ) shows that last year investors provided more follow-on capital than ever before, with 56 percent ($109m) of all investment being follow-on capital. PwC Partner Anand Reddy says the commitment and result is heartening. “This time last year, we were considering what impact Covid-19 might have on the world of startup investment and the importance of backing startups through periods of uncertainty. A year later, and the
startup ecosystem has demonstrated not only its resilience but an increase in maturity,” says Reddy. Suse Reynolds, Chair of the Angel Association, says that early-stage investment as an asset class is maturing in New Zealand. “A noticeable trend is that deal sizes are

Grounds, grievances & good faith With a rise in media articles heralding large pay-outs for dismissed employees (even if they failed a drug test, lied to their employer, or some equally prickly issue), you may be wondering, can employers ever get it right? The law holds employers to a high standard and not meeting this standard can be a costly mistake. This is where the right legal advice can be of huge benefit, says Deborah Hendry of Saunders & Co Lawyers.
E
mployees who are causing major disruption or not performing to their contractual expectations can be a big headache for any business. But what is the appropriate way to deal with these situations?
Deborah says the essentials for business owners to consider when entering a disciplinary process are: • Make sure employment agreements are complete, up to date, and in writing. • Be careful if relying on trial period clauses. Relying on these is not as straight forward as it seems. • Do not confuse performance issues with misconduct or serious misconduct. They require fundamentally different approaches. • Follow any processes set out in employment agreements and internal policies. • Remember to advise employees of their right to legal representation throughout the process. • Seek legal advice before undertaking any kind of process. This can help confirm the intended course of action is appropriate and whether there are sufficient grounds to proceed.
“Dismissals and other disciplinary actions need to be justified. There must be good reasons to discipline or dismiss someone and a fair process must be followed. A failure of either can cost a business dearly.”
“There is also a duty to act in good faith, but what does this mean in practice? Both the employee and employer need to be responsive and communicative towards each other. During a disciplinary process this involves: • Clearly setting out all the allegations being made and share all relevant information with the employee. • Allowing the employee to respond to the allegations before deciding whether the conduct amounts to misconduct or serious misconduct and the appropriate action to take. “Even if an employer appears to have done everything correctly, it is no guarantee of preventing a personal grievance claim. However, any potential financial or reputational damage will be minimised if staff have been treated fairly in accordance with a lawful process,” she adds.

Heads up! We caught up with Sharon Screen of Hair Art and Beauty about a career that has taken her around the world.
W
ith years of experience I find myself still absolutely passionate about all things hairdressing. I’ve travelled the world, creating and showcasing fabulous hairstyles from London, to Italy, France, Japan and even on the catwalks of New York. Having been an educator to top hairdressers around the world, I’m loving being on the salon floor with clients in a great environment as a member of the fabulous Hair Art and Beauty team. Whether it’s cutting, styling or technical colouring that is required, I’ll enhance your look, create your point of difference and reflect your personality. As a stylist with exceptional avant-guarde cutting skills, technical expertise as a colourist and natural flair, I’ll create looks that are totally on-trend and suited to you.
I offer a very personalised and professional service. When not in salon, you could well find me consulting clients on their gardens as a landscape architect (BLA Hons), or perhaps I might be helping couples shape their perfect wedding day… doing all the flowers and venue stylings as I’m also a registered marriage celebrant. Keeping active is always important, golfing, playing tennis or jumping on my bike for a quick fix and enjoying my family and friends helps make it all worthwhile. When it comes to hair, my philosophy has always been ‘it’s more important what we leave behind than what we take off!’ In-salon at H&B two Thursdays per month. Get in touch with the salon to book a consultation or appointment. I welcome new and existing clients.

Love your smile Smile and the world smiles with you, so the adage goes. Luckily when it comes to smiles, Cantabrians have internationally renowned clinical dental technician Richard Greenlees to help them beam again.
F
rom his Lovebite studio in central Christchurch, Richard specialises in creating natural-looking dentures, specifically shaped to enhance each client’s face. Small nuances in the fabrication, colour and shape and even slight imperfections create a uniquely individual smile for every client. Having run his own clinic in London’s prestigious Harley Street, for 15 years, Richard has treated people from all walks of life, from East End barrow boys ‘done good’ to the rich and famous, politicians, actors and musicians.
His revolutionary approach and techniques are changing the face of denture aesthetics, and his advice is internationally sought. Luckily, you don’t have to go far to see what he can do for your smile. Richard personally guides each patient through every step of the process, starting with greeting them at the door. Considerable time is spent in the initial consultation, reviewing the patient’s history, reviewing their pre-dentures smile and how it will look post-dentures. The result time and again is a smile that
not only looks real but transforms the whole structure and shape of the patient’s face, something Richard calls his signature ‘Oral Lift’. With appropriate facial support, cleverly balancing what nature has created with man-made additions, the facial tissues are brought back into the correct position, the lips are reformed, and beauty and confidence are restored. All of Richard’s Lovebite dentures are bespoke and made by his own hands in his one-man studio. Select with care Choosing the right cosmetic practitioner and clinic can be confusing. Here are some pointers from the team at The Face Value
Angela Rewha
1.
Dr Philip Frost
Shelley Frost
Experience counts, especially when it comes to dermal fillers and other injectable treatments so make sure you are in safe hands. An extensive knowledge of facial anatomy is essential to deliver a natural, balanced aesthetic and minimise complications or unwanted treatment results.
2. 3.
4.
Be careful of treatment payment plans that lock you in. We often hear of people who have paid a lot more than necessary for a cookbook approach not tailored specifically to suit their needs.
If possible, choose a NZ Society of Cosmetic Medicine accredited doctor. If a nurse is injecting you, ask who their oversight doctor is, and whether they are onsite. This can be key when managing any potential side effects and complications.
5. 6. 7.
Be wary of discounts and super low prices. Your face is not the place to settle for inferior quality products or clinicians with lower levels of training or expertise. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
You deserve to be in safe, competent hands. A poor outcome may be with you a long time.
Make sure the clinic team look natural and not over treated. If their aesthetic doesn’t match yours, seek a different clinician. We always say, choose skills not mls. Pay attention to the clinic itself. Look for NZ Society of Cosmetic Medicine audited and accredited facilities, to ensure a safe and professional practice environment. There’s no such thing as too much information. Prior to any treatment you should always receive in-depth information and be taken through an informed consent process, including potential side effects and how they would be managed.

SPF is an essential (or should be!) part of your skincare routine, but some ingredients can contribute to coral reef bleaching, and cause harm to other sea life like algae, mussels, fish and dolphins. In fact, ingredients oxybenzone and octinoxate are actually banned in Hawaii! Look for reef safe sunscreen ingredients and brands.
It’s easy to fall for products in cute packaging, but beware! Packaging, and over packaging is generally destined straight for landfill. Instead, familiarise yourself which materials that can be recycled in your city, use refillable products, or participate in schemes like TerraCycle which recycles hard-to-recycle materials.
Microplastics are a major
Microplastics, like glitter and physical exfoliant beads, are a huge waste stream. Hardly visible to the human eye, the less-than-5mm pieces of plastic end up in waterways and the ocean, creating a non-biodegradable “plastic soup” that is almost impossible to get rid of. So, don’t use products with plastic in them! Instead, try gentle acid exfoliators like AHAs and BHAs.

Sayonara, stress! WORDS MORGAN TAIT
While the physical health impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic might be lesser felt here in New Zealand – the psychological impacts on stress and wellbeing have certainly been real. So just as the cooler months roll in, it can be an opportune time to consciously chill out. Here are Metropol’s tips for some science-backed stress busters.
BANISH THE LANGUISH You’ve heard of burnout, but have you heard of “languishing”? Described by the New York Times as “the neglected middle child of mental health,” languishing is a somewhat joyless and aimless emotional state. Sitting in the middle of the mental health spectrum, this feeling of “meh” can make us more susceptible to mental health issues, as well as sufferers finding it harder to concentrate and wanting to withdraw. Keep the languish at bay by finding your “flow”. This is what psychology professor Adam Grant (and author of above article) describes as those activities which catapult you into routine and bring meaning to your day, for example your morning coffee and sudoku or a Youtube yoga class.
HEALTHY HABITS What we choose to fuel our bodies with not only impacts our physical health, but also our mood. Sugary foods may give a temporary high, but as blood sugar regulates, mood swings can creep in. Which means there is some bad news about caffeine, too. If you’re already stressed, caffeine can supercharge those stress side effects like anxiousness, difficulty sleeping and energy crashes. Instead, snack on nourishing wholefoods like fruit and nuts, and drink a cup of green tea instead of that cuppa Joe.
THE STRESS EFFECT
MINDFUL MOVES
High levels of stress over an extended period have been scientifically proven to affect basically every physical function of our bodies. From high blood pressure and heart health to altering the brain, mucking with your hormones, messing with your sleep and lowering your immune system: stress is not helpful for health. Understanding how stress affects you, and knowing what to look out for can be a great way to self-regulate and keep on top of your health.
Making a conscious effort to move your body in ways which you enjoy is another sciencebacked way to beat stress. Research new ways to exercise, from gentle stretching to walking and more intensive work outs, and one mindful mustdo is getting the right amount of sleep: Go to bed earlier, banish electronics and consider accessories like a sunrise lamp or herbal sleep remedies. If your mood is consistently low, talk to your GP or free call or text 1737.

cuisine Vegetarianfriendly cities around the world Cuisine is often a determining feature in travel. Examples include Tuscany in Italy to sample acquacotta, torta di ceci, olives and fettunta; France’s Champagne region for chaource and langres cheeses, truffles, les biscuits roses de Reims and bouchons de Champagne au chocolat.
G
astronomic vegetarian dishes are becoming more available and more sophisticated, and areas becoming known for their specialties. Now there is the Vegetarian Cities Index 2021 to help. The index assesses the affordability and quality of each city’s vegetarian offerings, providing insight into those best prepared to attract vegetarians.
Nestpick used available data to rank the best cities for vegetarians. “With more people wanting to reduce their meat consumption, cities must cater to these needs with diverse vegetarian offerings if they want to attract young talent, particularly Millennials, Gen Z, and the even younger generations to come,” comments Omer Kucukdere, Founder and
CEO at Nestpick. “We hope that this index can inspire vegetarians looking to move abroad to pick the right city for their needs, or even offer travel destination ideas for those searching for the best plant-based gastronomic spots. Visit the website www.nestpick.com/ vegetarian-cities-index/

life itself. We bring you the total Greek experience with authenticity being our top priority. Real Greek food from the heart. It’s about hospitality, good staff, service and traditional recipes dating back hundreds of years,” says Emilios. Open seven nights from 5pm until late, the restaurant offers a seasonal menu, using mainly local ingredients to produce traditional Greek dishes. Head chef Lawrence Harvey (aka Loz) is passionate about his culinary creations, and to ensure authenticity, Emilios’ aunties and cousins regularly help to “fine-tune” the flavours. “What we offer is as close as possible to a Sunday family meal in Greece.” Aside from the owners and the head chef, there are two additional chefs, two kitchen hands, a general manager, restaurant manager and seven front-of-house staff. General manager Anne Foucque-Patelesio enjoys being part of such a large welcoming family. “Everyone from the owners, the kitchen staff and front of house staff; we’re one big Greek family,” she smiles. Diners also become part of the family, enjoying the atmosphere, the service and most of all the cuisine. “The food is very Greek-inspired, and the portions are all very generous,” explains Anne. “No-one ever leaves unsatisfied or hungry.” Her current favourite menu items include slow roasted pork and crackle with pourgouri (bulgur wheat pilaf), parsley, grape and walnut dressing, croquettes with a traditional spicy cheese dip known as tyrokafteri, and for dessert bougatsa – a custard-filled pastry with apple compote, cinnamon and vanilla bean ice-cream. If those do not tempt you there are lots of other mouth-watering options. The Athens Yacht Club promises “Greek food fit for the gods” and it delivers with the best quality ingredients and tantalising creations. The décor is fresh yacht club-inspired, and the menu includes many well-known Mediterranean favourites. Imagine succulent crispy tiger prawns or stuffed grape leaves
with pork, rice, tomato, herbs and yoghurt, combinations featuring tzatziki, taramosalata and tyrokafteri, Saganaki (flamed cheese), grilled broccolini, baked eggplant, seared yellowfin tuna, Greek meatballs, flashfried calamari, slow cooked lamb shoulder, chargrilled steak, fresh seafood options and those are just a few. The desserts sound divine, from frozen parfait with chocolate mousse, caramelised almonds, chocolate sauce, to traditional baklava, and amazing loukamades or Greek doughnuts with toppings of honey, olive oil biscuit crumbs and vanilla bean ice cream
or salted caramel sauce, caramel ice cream, pistachios. Yummy! Can’t decide? Try a dessert platter with some of everything on it. Word is spreading so bookings are essential. “The best compliment we can get is when we have repeat customers,” says Emilios. “People come in wanting to try the food and experience the atmosphere, and when they come back, again and again, well, what more could we ask for. It is so wonderful to have a job where we can put a smile on people’s faces.”

Trying the Chivas Regal American Rye straight is an experience and as Big Daddy believes: “Don’t judge something till you’ve tried it.” But just in case you want this as a cocktail, try 30mls of Chivas, 20ml of Campo Viejo Rioja, 20ml lemon juice, 20ml sugar syrup, 60ml of soda water and an orange wedge to garnish, over ice. It’s different but you will love it. This month also brings you Big Daddy’s special reserve, which is a stunning Kentucky bourbon from Big Daddy’s private barrel. Each beverage is an occasion to be shared with good friends.

Recently I had a weekend off totally off. As luck would have it, unlike so many previous occasions, I had the rare opportunity of resting rather than working on my overburdened diary or conscience.

It doesn’t matter how you choose to avoid it, not taking the time to rest and reflect takes its toll whoever you are, and however capable. What’s worse - it can develop into something much more serious and that’s burnout. A topic which is gaining considerably more traction in this post COVID period. Busy lives, multiple responsibilities, and high expectations, be they personal, familial or professional, have become deeply normalized in our society. And that goes for many children too, who embark on multiple sports and educational extra-curricular activities – the reflection of a deep-rooted social norm. I used to think slowing down was really ‘stopping’ in disguise, and I imagined numerous consequences, all of them dire. You’d let someone down, be less productive and fail to achieve the various goals that had been set … but multiple studies suggest otherwise.
“Rest is an essential element of working well and working smart,” states Alex Soojung-Kim Pang in his book Rest: Why You Get More Done
When You Work Less. Alex is a futurist and a business consultant; and he does his best to dispel the myth that the harder we work the better the outcome. Two of the ways the author recommends using rest to benefit creativity include: 1. Creating an early morning routine. Routines are said to enhance creativity. By allowing a system to support a routine you have a better opportunity and timeframe to utilize creative thought processes. Being a natural early bird, I can definitely subscribe to that although, not everyone enjoys a morning routine that starts before 5am. 2. Napping. Sleep scientists have found that 30-minute naps can increase alertness and decrease fatigue, allowing you to move forward with what you’re doing rather than losing your way. But, 30 minutes shouldn’t move into an hour or more because this can deplete rather than restore fractured energy and decrease creativity. It’s not about trying to always fit more into your day or just defaulting to the work harder button. It could be that we have got the relationship between working hours and productivity back to front? After all, “Rest isn’t idleness, it can be a key to a better life.”

Time beaten and earthquake damaged, but with great bones, ‘The Bach’ just needed the magic of a DJ Hewitt transformation. The late 1950s abode above Akaroa harbour was a Christchurch family’s holiday pad for 17 years. With the children grown up, it was time for creature comforts and futureproofing. “We’re good friends of Daryl and Tara Hewitt, and trusted them immensely,” says Tania Lambley. “Their brief came with honest and clever advice.” The 130sqm home was to be simple, uncluttered, and practical, using the same footprint to keep within budget. French doors out to a northfacing deck and slider windows in the kitchen created extra space, light, and the flow of indooroutdoor bliss. The old kitchen pantry was divided in two - half becoming a pantry and half a much-needed wardrobe space for the adjacent spare bedroom. Rotting weather boards gave way to a HardieFlex sheet and Axent

trim board-and-batten look in charcoal with a blue undertone to soak in the seaside surrounds. “Daryl really wears his heart on his sleeve for all his clients. He’s genuine, and listens, so particular things were done exactly how I needed. He really wanted to make it perfect for us, which was humbling,” says Tania. Tania appreciated with current building supply challenges, that Tara, an interior consultant, ordered plan A and B choices for fitting and fixtures. So there were never any hold-ups. “There were regular new photo updates. It got quite exciting waiting for them at the end of the week. “Two builders stayed over and worked Monday to Friday. It was so organised, and ready in six months, in time for Christmas. Everyone including the subcontractors went the extra mile. We have real value for money. “At the final viewing, it was those finer details you don’t expect to be done, which really surprised us.”

Olive and let live
Colour plays an undeniably important role in interior design. Each hue has the power to set the tone, mood and general ambiance. It also has the power to both give the illusion of space or make a space seem smaller than it is. Taking a brand-new-to-you hue onto your room’s major surfaces – your walls, floors, ceilings – is a sure-fire way to completely transform your space and breathe new life into your home.
A
s a colour that features prominently in nature, light olive green can be a great hue both inside and out. Going for a deeper version, such as Resene Waiouru, is ideal in a lounge setting to create a serene, cosy space that is also very on trend. It’s a colour that’s deep enough that it brings a sense of intimacy without dominating the things around it. For an interesting twist, break up the uniform green by creating a diagonal batten wall. Paint your battens in Resene Gravel for the lattice-like structure

to bring in visual interest and give your room another tactile element. You could also paint your battens in a lighter colour, like Resene Parchment or Resene Flax, to lift the batten design out of the wall. Charcoal and gravel greys are popular deep hues and can be used in almost any room, be it your bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, dining room or lounge. While they can be amazing options as main colours in a room, for a look that is dripping in drama, charcoal and gravel grey also work wonderfully as accent colours. They pair perfectly with olive green and other shades of grey, adding visual interest and depth to a space. Bring them in by painting your cabinetry, lamp stand or side table, or by layering in soft grey furnishings, like cushions.

Indulge in a beautiful bathroom At this time of year, all those things that irritate you about your dingy old bathroom can be even more irritating. Because it is the first room you visit each morning and often the last at night, it’s important that you actually want to be in it and that everything works!
I
t’s time to renovate and getting it right from the start is a sure-fire way to get a bathroom that you actually enjoy being in. Butterfield Bathroom Renovations only do bathrooms, and have been doing them for over 40 years, giving them a huge advantage.
Martin Lodge is Butterfield’s designer and as your first point of contact will start the whole process of your renovation. “First I’ll arrange a site visit and an inperson consultation, when I will gather ideas from the current space and your vision. A part of this process is also measuring the existing set up and taking photos.” Along with the quote, Martin will then put together a presentation of fixtures and
fittings for you so you will be able to see exactly what you are going to get. Whether you are excited by the prospect of planning a brand-new bathroom or want to update your existing bathroom, Butterfield Bathrooms offers unparalleled quality of service. That service includes a pre-start meeting when you will be introduced to the company’s site supervisor Paul. “We have experienced tradespeople on staff and
use suppliers who we have long standing relationships with,” says Martin. “We pride ourselves on our organisation and running to a tight schedule – there won’t be tradespeople turning up unexpectedly.” The great thing about Butterfield Bathrooms is that when you get a quote it is full and complete, with a full breakdown of the work. That includes a floor check to ensure there are no obvious issues such as a spongy floor. If you’re getting wall tiles, you need to make sure that the walls are perfectly straight and, don’t worry, Martin will be able to take care of that. Thinking of re-sale can be an important aspect of renovation and Martin has spoken to several real estate agents who have all agreed that for every dollar you spend on your bathroom you will get $1.50 back. If you are worried about your bathroom being out of action for weeks, they have that covered with a mobile bathroom, that can be parked up close to your house. Take the first step towards your new bathroom by calling Martin Lodge at Butterfield Bathroom Renovations 027 351 1601, email martin@butterfield.co.nz or go to the website below.

Autumn is fast running into winter with its cool, short days and long nights. You are looking at your outdoor area and thinking “It’s goodbye to sitting out here for a few months. Inside is where I am going to be.” But that does not have to be the case. A solution to extending your outdoor living experience throughout the winter lies in adding a louvre roof to your home.
Y
ou might think that now would not be a good time to be installing a louvre roof. Not true. It’s actually perfect, because even in the cold of winter Louvre Solutions can create an expansive outdoor space that can be enjoyed all year round. But as they say: “That’s not all.” These roof systems are fully customisable with heating, lighting and ventilation as well as integrated pull-down side screens. They also come standard with a rain sensor, which allows the roof to close automatically in the rain. Add that package together and you have the ideal environment for winter entertaining, relaxing or simply enjoying not being cooped up indoors. For more than 17 years Craig Rogers, owner of Louvre Solutions, has been
advising customers all over the country about the right roof for their environment. He knows what works and what doesn’t, both from a practical and an aesthetic perspective. It might be a roof over a patio, a spa pool or a deck or even a freestanding feature anywhere on a property. “There are often fine, crisp days in winter when it would be great to be outside,” says Craig, “The protection of a louvre roof can make doing that so much more appealing.” The company’s louvre systems are manufactured locally in Canterbury at its Rangiora base. Only high-quality materials are used, from the New Zealand extruded aluminium louvres and fastenings to the motors and controls imported from Europe. The metal system is stronger and more
durable than traditional patio covers and conforms to nearly all wind and snow load requirements. All the company’s louvre roofs come with a 10-year warranty. What about the expense of such a solid system? “When we first started out,” says Craig, “these premium products were indeed expensive. Not anymore. Now thanks to technological advancements, we can be accessible to markets right across the spectrum, from entry-level properties to high-end architecturally-designed homes.” Visit the website below for more information or phone 027 535 6286. Apart from Craig, the company has agents in the North Island as well as in Nelson, midCanterbury, Wanaka and Queenstown.

Don’t waste that waste
N
ot everybody has the space for, or time to nurture, a worm farm or compost bin to dispose of food scraps. And we all know how quickly the green organics bin can fill up after a couple of hours gardening, leaving no room for leftovers. Noisy and smelly waste disposal units aren’t everybody’s preferred option either. So what other options are there to reduce the volume of household food scraps? Enter the FoodCycler®, from Breville. The FoodCycler® slots on to the bench of any spacious kitchen, or into the laundry or garage if you are strapped for space and turns food waste into odourless EcoChips™ in as little as four hours. These dehydrated chips can then be dug directly into the garden for a terrific sustainable compost. The unit’s bucket holds 2L of food waste and can take pretty much anything you throw into it – fruit,

vegetables, bread, meat, chicken bones, egg shells etc. The unit then dehydrates, then pulverises and cools the waste into chips that amount about an 80 percent reduction in volume. You may think that the process sounds like a noisy one – but the FoodCycler® is extremely quiet, not to mention energy efficient, with the built-in filters eliminating any odours. The only odour we experienced when using the FoodCycler® was a faint smell of freshly baked biscuits when opening the lid after the process had finished. Cleaning the bucket is simple – pop it in the dishwasher, or a wipe-out with warm, soapy water usually gets it ready for the next use. The resulting EcoChips™ can then be dug directly into the garden or into pot plants. Just be wary of digging it in properly to discourage pests or your dog from eating them – they are, after all, just jerky snacks made from leftovers!
Pros: A great way to reduce and reuse your food waste. Quiet, economic and odourless. Frees up your organics bin
Cons: Pricey initial outlay ($599.95) May encourage dogs digging in the garden (I’m looking at you labradors!)

Nature’s time to plant trees
6.
Some tips for the best results:
Choose the right bulb for the right pot – the bigger the bulb the bigger the pot. Always plant in fresh potting mix. Invest in a planting mix containing controlled release fertiliser and supplement with fortnightly feeds of liquid fertiliser. Plant generously so that the pots look full. Large bulbs, such as tulips, can be almost touching. Bulbs which have bushy foliage, such as freesias, should be spaced about 2cm apart. If you are layering your bulbs, put the tallest and the latest flowering varieties towards the bottom of the pot. Add some more potting mix ensuring you have covered the first layer of spring bulbs. After planting, place the containers in a cool place until the shoots appear. Then bring them out into a sunny position for flowering. Drainage is further improved by sitting pots on spaced bricks or special pot feet. Keep the potting mix moist, but not wet throughout the growing season. Then enjoy the show!

June in the garden Brr! Winter is officially here, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to hibernate from the garden. In fact, quite the opposite. Now is the time to think of the season ahead. Here are Metropol’s tips for keeping on top of your topiary this June.
Clean up stations
Flower power
As the leaves keep falling in their autumn glory, it’s important to clean them up. Fallen leaves on lawns prevent all-important sunlight reaching the grass, stunting its growth and creating a great environment for disease to thrive. Likewise, keep on top of those pesky weeds, too.
The skies might be turning grey imminently, which is all the more reason to brighten up your flower beds with pops of polyanthus, primula, pansies and violas. It’s also time for most garden centres to roll out their new season roses, so keep your eyes peeled for your prickly favourites so you don’t miss out their prime planting time.
Get pruning! As the trees finish fruiting, it’s time to give them a new season haircut! Cut stems back to a healthy growing bud and seal the cuts on larger stems with pruning paint to protect against disease. Pro tip: keep those secateurs and loppers clean with white spirits to prevent any diseases transferring. You are also going to want to sharpen those tools for neater cuts which also deter disease.
Edible plantings
Frosty reception
Most pip and stone fruit trees will be losing their leaves and going into a dormant state for the next few months. All deciduous fruit trees can be planted now, while still dormant. In the vege patch, it’s garlic planting time! Earmark the shortest day to plant these aromatic bulbs to harvest on the longest day in December. Don’t stop planting those winter staples like spinach and leafy greens and brassicas.
While the true winter weather might not set in for a while yet, the frosts will start to creep in (if they haven’t already). Protect those frost tender plants with frost cloth or covering. If you don’t have, or want to invest in, frost cloth, you can also use old blankets, sheets or burlap sacks. Just make sure to drape them loosely and secure with stakes, rocks or bricks.

row will return to the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, with entry still free to everyone, over three days from March 18 to 20 next year. Festival Director Sandi MacRae says excitement is already building around the 2022 festival, with sponsors and visitors to the 2021 event sharing their favourite parts of the show and coming up with new ideas for next year. “We were absolutely thrilled to welcome approximately 25,000 guests to the festival in March this year. Feedback has been so encouraging, and we are now in full planning mode, with the aim of bringing a bigger and better festival to the people of Christchurch.” She says the organisers want to build on the community, education and sustainability aspects of the show for 2022. The charitable trust behind the festival has a long-term vision for Grow that aims to see it expand into the central city using other venues and city restaurants to share what is great about growing in Christchurch. Simplicity in solutions
T
Synonymous with innovation, Blum NZ has done it again with its Space Step plinth solution and Pull-Out Shelf Lock systems. Of course, it wouldn’t be Blum without the sleek design and elegant operating systems which are inherent and guarantee the brand its aspirational status.
he Space Step is beautiful in its simplicity; a chic answer to the issue of shelves out of reach, or the little ones wishing to help in the kitchen, plus it creates extra storage space in the toe kick of base units. It opens with ultimate ease. You can choose from either the electrical support system, or a push-to-open mechanical system, both with effortless and soft closing. The step is safely locked into place by weight of just eight kilograms. The Shelf Lock system works
with Movento runners to hold pull-out shelves safely and conveniently in place when the shelves are fully extended. Pull-Out shelf lock has a pushto-open mechanical option for handle-less, or standard soft closing. The lock can be released with just one hand. It’s a small convenience that punches way beyond its weight by making life easier and so making every day better. Find the Space Step and the Pull-Out Shelf Shelf Lock systems on the website below. www.blum.com/nz

A new style of leadership
A proactive approach
The speed and scope of the pandemic crisis has presented an extraordinary challenge – and opportunity – for today’s business leaders.
The profile of health and wellbeing activity in our community is currently at an all-time high. The continuing issues around Covid-19, national and international, are creating a lot of interest and challenges. These will continue to impact on us all into the foreseeable future.
Almost overnight businesses had to quickly adapt to a very challenging operating landscape that, even now more than a year on, continues to evolve. At the heart of every business is its people, which is why it has never been so important to look at how to best lead people through a period of constant change. In a challenging, unsettled, uncertain environment, many people develop a ‘fight or flight’ instinct, which is not sustainable for the business or the individual long term. This requires a shift away from a managerial-focused role to a more leadership role. While in any uncertain times, human instinct can cause some leaders to
keep their cards close to their chest, perhaps out of fear of getting it wrong, however unprecedented situations require leaders to recognise that miss-steps are inevitable and continual readjustment of the path is essential – as is taking their staff on that journey. Today’s new style of leadership requires leaders to inspire their people to do their very best work and focus on impact – to give them the tools, scope and support to let them fly. This, along with clarity and decisiveness, is what I believe good leadership will look like moving forward and will be vital for us to embrace the opportunities around our economic recovery.
The recent ministerial announcement containing further details and timing on The Health and Disability Systems Review has attracted a lot of attention across the Health Sector and beyond. This too will have significant impacts right across the nation. In Canterbury we are preparing for change and are determined to maximise the opportunities that will result from the proposed transitions. We accept that things are going to be different in the future, and we also appreciate that while we prepare for the changes,
we all have an ongoing responsibility to continue to deliver excellent health and wellbeing outcomes to our people. We also want to ensure we protect those many components of the current Canterbury Health System that are recognised as special and valuable. This will best be achieved by all participants in the system working constructively and positively together, proactively embracing change and never forgetting that patients and the health and wellbeing of all people remain our prime focus.

Aspirational venue
Long term planning
The importance of Parakiore Recreation and Sports Centre (formerly Metro Sports Facility) to Canterbury’s sporting landscape was recently reinforced to me when I had the opportunity to show a few members of the Tactix netball team around the site.
The beginning of May saw amazing weather accentuate the beauty of autumn. One of the things people love about Christchurch is the four distinct seasons that take us through the year. We always have a different season to enjoy and another to look forward to.
These were the first elite athletes to set foot on to what will likely be their new home venue and it was pleasing to see that the sheer scale of Parakiore made an impression. A lack of appropriate facilities in post-quake Christchurch has meant the Tactix still travel more than any other team. They will play two-thirds of their matches away this season, so they are looking forward to spending a few more nights at home come 2023. Although that is great for those of us who like to walk around the central city, including Hagley Park and the Botanic Gardens, it does create pressure on our water infrastructure, and it reminds us that our climate is changing. I make this point because we have spent the month listening to submissions on our draft Long Term Plan, which is very much focused on risk and resilience, along with preparing for the anticipated impacts of climate change. It has been incredibly positive listening to
sessions all under the same roof as their gameday courts ensures our athletes can spend more time training and less time travelling. The flow-on effect is that the better these teams do, the more spectators will be drawn into the central city, a driving force behind all the Crown-led Anchor Projects. Having been designed for users of all ages and abilities, Parakiore will also bring these elite teams back into the community. As young Silver Fern Kimiora Poi put it – when you see your idols training on the courts next to you, you have something to aspire to.
community groups and residents’ associations, who want to partner with the council to achieve our shared objectives. The message has been that working together enables us to get more done, at the same time as building and strengthening community relationships over issues people care about. For the same reason, many submitters have been very supportive of the strengthening communities fund and the support that gives the volunteer sector, along with the libraries and galleries, which are highly valued as an important part of our social infrastructure. There’s much to think about.

The sky is no limit In a word association game, it would be rare that the word ‘roofer’ would prompt ‘polymath’, but that’s what you get at DCM Roofing. Company director Iain McPhail quietly enjoys an eclectic range of skills and interests which he combines with his core business of reroofing and repairs, to excellent effect.
I
ain serves as Chair on the local BNI Chapter, and with that organisation’s strong ties with Hospice New Zealand in mind, the local group organised a fundraiser for Nurse Maude. “We decided to hold a quiz night and were thrilled to raise $6000 thanks to the generosity of our family, friends, colleagues, and supporters,” says Iain. “We are really proud to be able to back Hospice New Zealand.” Photographs from that entertaining and successful evening were featured in Metropol’s April 29 issue. His day job is busy too. “It’s a real hive of activity with reroofs and maintenance of roofs at the forefront and the centre of what we do,” explains Iain. Work is combined with a personal pastime of
piloting his own light aircraft. “If I’m assessing a project in Hanmer or Kaikoura for instance, it just makes sense to fly myself there and back.” His aircraft is an aerobatics plane, and with 20 years in the roofing business Iain often jokes to clients that he has probably already seen their roof, while flying upside down. DCM’s sizeable team of 17 guys on the ground brings a problem-solving approach to the reroofing business. They offer a suite of services that include, but is not restricted, to scaffolding, spouting and drainpipes, skylights, chimney or flue and fireplace installs, spouting and drainpipes, and insulation. “With overseas travel money unused, people are making smart
decisions around investing in their homes, and we have all the skills to pull these projects together for them,” says Iain. A recently completed job saw the team provide the scaffolding, the reroof, engage a builder to replace weatherboards, and contract a painter. “The whole job was our own and that’s what we like doing,” says Iain. “Our next job includes relevelling a kitchen and installing an extractor fan as well as the reroof.” The team prides itself also on ensuring clients have a great experience working with them: friendly staff, value for money, and a great end result. “You don’t survive in this business unless your customers recommend you, and ours are only too happy to do just that.” Metropol 27 May, 2021 75

Celebrating architectural excellence
The inaugural festival of Open Christchurch proved a huge success, attracting more than 12,000 to its assorted events earlier this month.
The CSO’s dress rehearsal at the Douglas Lilburn Auditorium which is a landmark Warren & Mahoney building.
T
he number of attendees at the one-weekendonly festival of architectural excellence demonstrated the public’s genuine interest in
architecture and desire to discover the city through some of its best-designed spaces. Attendees explored a range of 46 buildings and
participated in more than 35 architectural-based activities that were part of the programme, including booked-out visits to homes
of architectural significance, architectural tours, children’s workshops, behind-thescenes tours and access to buildings or parts of buildings not normally available to the public. Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel shared the views from her office on the sixth floor of the Te Hononga Civic Building, hosting close to 350 people in her office across the Saturday, while old boys and current students alike showed groups of curious people through heritage buildings at Christ’s College. Attendance at architectural tours consistently exceeded expectations, while 65 Cambridge Terrace, the modernist treasure that once housed the Warren & Mahoney offices as well as a private residence for Sir Miles Warren, was packed throughout the Saturday. Te Pūtahi - Centre for Architecture & City-Making, the organisation behind Open Christchurch plans to run Open Christchurch annually, with dates set for next year’s edition on the weekend of April 30 to May 1.

No mirage garage Why have a room that you cannot use year-round? Don’t let the cold, damp conditions of winter stop you from working on all your jobs and hobbies.
ince 2014, Garage Carpet Pro (a division of The Pro Group) has rolled out more than 215,000sqm of specialised carpet to cover the concrete floors in more than 6000 double garages. Using a highquality European garage carpet, the waterproof product is installed to a high standard, with minimum mess and inconvenience, by qualified and skilled owner-operators. Lancaster Park redevelopment kicks off The $3.6 million redevelopment of Christchurch’s Lancaster Park site is underway to turn the place of sporting legend into a green recreational space and community sports fields. It is likely the new generation of sporting legends will begin playing there from early next year.
T
his first stage of the redevelopment is expected to take around nine months and includes cleaning up and levelling the site and removing the foundations of the stadium demolished in 2019. Topsoil will be put down and grass sown for new rugby, football and cricket sports fields. Christchurch City Council Head of Parks Andrew Rutledge says this is a significant
milestone following the loss of the legendary Lancaster Park stadium. “Lancaster Park has long held a special place in many Cantabrians’ hearts. After a proud 130-year history of hosting sporting events of all levels before the stadium came down, it’s fitting that this park will now get a new lease of life as a community sports and recreation area,” he says.
Mr Rutledge says a spatial plan, which was developed in response to community need for more recreational areas and sports grounds in the area, is being used as a guide for the work. Further development signalled in the spatial plan will occur as funding becomes available. Significant funding is proposed in the Draft Long Term Plan 2021 to 2031, due to be signed off by council next month. The Lancaster Park Memorial Gates on Stevens Street, which were built to commemorate the sacrifice of Canterbury athletes during World War One, will be protected during the redevelopment work.

Mastering joinery
M
aster Joiners belong to one of the world’s oldest trades, dating back to the 12th and 15th centuries. Most of us have heard of Master Builders and Master Plumbers, but Master Joiners are perhaps not so well-known. A joiner is a skilled tradesperson who works with timber and board products to create constructions such as kitchens, doors, windows, staircases and counters. It is an area of professionalism and craftsmanship. Joiners are represented in New Zealand by the Master Joiners Federation which has 10 regional associations, including one in Canterbury. As a group they aim to promote the Master Joiners brand encouraging customers to use joiners who are masters of their trade, producing high standards of workmanship. Membership of the Federation has benefits not only for customers, but for the joiners themselves. It bestows credibility and the interaction and sharing of information with fellow joiners is also invaluable.

Hands-on joinery A beautiful finish on their home is a vision for every prospective new house owner or renovator, and when it comes to the joinery, the stunning finish must combine with ease and enjoyment of use.
oinery excellence is the hallmark of Proceed Building, where director and qualified joiner Ian Mayer presides over installation, and manufacture if clients request it, of all a home’s joinery. “With my background as a working joiner before I moved into building and construction, I have the skills to discuss all elements of the project’s joinery with my clients or with the architect, there is no need for any thirdparty joiner to become involved. It makes for clear and concise communication of ideas and a result that clients are thrilled with.” The in-house joinery workshop combined with Ian’s 40 years of experience in joinery and building, enables the team to create pieces for everything from character restoration to architectural builds, renovations, and commercial projects. “Detailed joinery, beautiful finishes and complex structural details are what we excel at. The end product plus our happy clients only increases our appetites for the craft,” says Ian. a classical chandelier,” says Mr Gundermann. But the stunning ceilings don’t stop there in this sprawling Woods Bagot and Warren and Mahoney designed destination. “You’ll find 1400 seats but not a single ceiling tile in the auditorium,” he adds. “The curved manta ray ceiling is a testament to the skill of both the designers and those who constructed it. Given the challenges that come with creating floating plaster curves, we didn’t just do this for the aesthetics. They will also dampen the ambient sound of the large audiences that will use this space, ensuring a highquality experience for everyone attending. Moving between these key spaces and the likes of the 3100-square-metre Exhibition Hall, with its own distinctive yet unobtrusive woven wall panels, you pass towering timber walls in the foyer and pre-function areas. “These are large spaces, designed to hold events, so they need to be inviting. A sevenmetre-tall wall can be imposing but in Te Pae Christchurch you will find beautifully crafted fluted
timber walls wrapped around the building’s interior. They give the spaces a warmth, which is particularly noticeable from the outside at night. Covering two central city blocks and with architectural icons like the Town Hall and Tūranga close by, the pressure to deliver more than the typical
conventions box was immense. Te Pae Christchurch has risen to the challenge. Set to be New Zealand’s only purpose-built convention and exhibition centre when it opens later this year, Christchurch will have a compelling representative in the globally competitive events sector for years to come.
