In a state of evolution, the Garden City’s architectural typology is nothing short of distinct. New building facades are playing with eye catching angles, colours and materials – a welcome digression from the archetypal concrete and stone buildings previously adopted in the city, as we usher in a new era of urban architecture.

’ve long been a ‘project person’. While this makes me highly efficient when it comes to getting things done, it means I’m not very good at relaxing. Even my housework is broken up into ‘sections’ so rather than feeling overwhelming, it becomes heaps of little ‘goals’ that result in a mammoth job getting done. But when those projects start to take over the weekend and more projects than fun is getting done, that’s when I know something has to change. In my defence, we have been smack bang in the middle of selling a house and building a new one, which is particularly challenging when you throw three dogs and three kids in the mix, but nevertheless, I’m ready for something to give in the all work no play continuum. The world is currently suffering from a global rest deficit; we crave rest and relaxation, but then feel anxious that we’re being lazy when we attempt even 10 minutes for a cuppa. Whether this rest deficit is real or perceived, it’s damaging. We’ve long recognised the harmful effects of sleep deficit but, until now, it seems we’ve underestimated the effects of not resting. ABC AUDITED Yet research tells us that spending time relaxing not only helps our decision-making abilities and lowers our risk of depression, but it also boosts both our memory making abilities and our immune system response. Whether it’s a cup of tea and a copy of Metropol, some diaphragmic breathing and mindful meditation, powering it around the block with some headphones on, or curling up AUDITED on the coach for a Netflix marathon, there’s a way to relax that will be just for you. No matter what it is, it needs to be scheduled, after all, rest is not a luxury, it’s a necessity.

Living his passion By Céline Gibson

He recently won the 2019 Best Shorts Awards, award of merit, as Co-Executive Producer on the Emmy-submitted web series Donna on the Go, as well as the Gold Award from Pinnacle Film Awards for Best Director in the same series and there’s likely a swag more to come.

n fact, when it comes to films and television, Christchurch stage and screen impresario Craig Hutchison has rubbed shoulders with some of the finest, from Mission Impossible Director J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg’s mum, Leah Adler, through to the film crew of Downton Abbey; not to mention his being on the judging panel for the Hollywood Shorts Film Festival 2014/15, his 2016 invitation to the Royal Variety Performance and his red carpet appearance at the 2017 Emmys. But it was Craig’s day-job as Managing Director of Lifelinks, an organisation he took over 25 years ago, that brought him into contact with the dynamic and indefatigable Donna Russo,

who he worked with on Donna on the Go, a series designed to raise awareness for people with disabilities. “Lifelinks provides people with disabilities a tailor-made, whole-life approach to help them attain the best outcomes as far as their values and aspirations,” Craig explains. When Los Angeles film coach Peggy Lane invited Craig to meet her friend whose disabilities didn’t stop her from living life to the fullest, he didn’t hesitate to book a flight to LA. At 135cm tall, Donna was born with Turners Syndrome, a chromosomal disorder in which a female is born with only one X chromosome, and now has adult onset FSH Muscular Dystrophy, a condition that slowly robs the muscles of movement. Donna began dancing at the age of 10 and graduated from Mercyhurst University with a BA in Dance. Despite dance companies saying she was too short, Donna took on roles of elves (Lord of the Rings), aliens, dolls and monsters in television, film and music videos, and was submitted to the Emmys as Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Series. Donna on the Go is being released at the Ability Awards in Los Angeles. On his return, Craig starts rehearsals on the first of three plays by CAS’n’OVA Productions, a theatre company he founded in 2008. “I love performance. I love working with actors with people. The face tells everything.” “You’ve got to live your passion, whatever that may be. If you love it, you’ll thrive. Lose your passion and you’re only half-alive.”

ow she’s focusing her energy on helping talented Gypsy jazz guitarist Connor Hartley-Hall make his own mark. The pair, who met just three short months ago, immediately connected over a shared love of Gypsy jazz and now they are taking their music back the Lyttelton, this time at the Lyttelton Arts Factory. Also featuring Pete Fleming on double bass, the 1 March show is a double celebration for the pair, marking the official release of their joint album, South of France, and funds raised from ticket sales will go towards a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a musical OE. “We have been given a chance to go to the UK later this year to take part in one of the most amazing Gypsy music retreats/ festivals in the world,” Fiona says. “It is the most amazing chance for us both to learn from and perform with some of the best players of this style in the world. This is a true bucket list opportunity for me and I feel it will change Connor’s young musical life. “These shows will be exciting and dynamic; a musical experience not to be missed.”

Fiona Pears fell in love with violin at five years of age and soon after one turned up in her Christmas stocking. By the age of 12 she was leading the Christchurch Youth Orchestra and, at 14, she joined the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. By the age of 18 she was performing in Lyttleton’s old Harbour Light theatre, as part of the Blue Swing Quartet.

Super Supplements For our hair and skin to be in the best condition possible, there are certain nutrients we need. Many factors in today’s modern lifestyle contribute to a nutritional deficiency – stress, environmental pollution, pregnancy hormones, poor sleep, lifestyle choices and diet all cause various nutrients to degrade quickly within our bodies. On top of this, some vitamins and trace minerals are unable to be stored in the body and must be consumed regularly, so getting the correct balance through diet alone can be difficult.

Living Art

Formerly at Pareora Street, Riccarton, Bryce Gallery has now relocated out to the idyllic serenity of the countryside and on Saturday 1 February, artists Min Kim and Jamie Stewart welcomed around 200 friends and associates to the reopening of Bryce Gallery at 84 Vincenza Drive, Ohoka.

T

heir vision for the gallery is to develop the four acres of land into a sculpture garden and the 422 square metre home into an artistic paradise for art lovers. Already Min and Jamie have turned the concept of what we think of as a working gallery on its head, for there is no one standalone room in which to view the Bryce collection; instead, artworks grace each and every room, as well as the garden and surrounding parklands. It is an astounding concept, but also a glorious one. “I’ve always felt that in connecting with nature, we are safe,” Min says. “Listening to the wind in the trees here – it’s so magical.” Min’s love of meeting new people and reconnecting with old friends has prompted the opening of an Air B&B in March; it’s a heavenly way for guests to experience that magic for themselves and revel in the beauty that’s truly all around them. “Bryce Gallery’s relocation is very much about my giving back to the artistic society, because my clients have fed my soul,” Min says. “I want to know who has bought my art and why – what it means to them.” Find Bryce Gallery at 84 Vincenza Drive, Ohoka. www.brycegallery.co.nz

TV or radio – differences for you? Someone once told me ‘radio pays ya mortgage, TV pays for ya holidays’ – and that was great advice! TV is so fickle and shortlived. I was out of full-time work for a few years constantly freelancing in many areas, but I loved the move back to full time radio as there’s something special about being live each day and having your listeners become part of your extended family. TV is great fun, but changing fast; radio has stood the test of time and I love it. Do you get to your hometown of Gore often? Is Southland still stuck in your soul? Love Gore! It was big enough to have opportunities but small enough to not have to compete for jobs and experiences. I host the Gold Guitars each year and love catching up with family as well as being part of something that is part of Gore’s history – I owe Gore a lot so it holds a special place in my heart. What’s life at the moment for you when you’re off the air – what gobbles up your leisure time? Radio demands mean you are constantly looking for material so it never really ends but you need to live life to experience that so I mainly just hang with my partner and dog at home doing house things – I’ve found mowing lawns and cleaning quite therapeutic. We try often to sponge off our mates who have holiday homes; Auckland is a great region for weekend getaways so we try to do that as often as we can. Dreams (big and small) for this year/decade? I’d love for our radio show to become of the “must listen“ shows in the afternoon and I would also love to get back to France where my partner is from - his family and the region (Southwest France) is amazing and I can’t wait to get back ... so please tune in and give the gayest, brownest family-friendly entertaining show on radio a go so I can earn enough money to get back to France.

Q+A

Nature knows best By Melinda Collins

For 25 years, Canterbury born and bred Linden Leaves has been transforming New Zealand’s natural plant-based goodness into goodness for our skin. We caught up with founder Brigit Blair about why we should nurture beautiful.

You’re celebrating an incredible 25 years this year! Why do you think people have connected so strongly with Linden Leaves and your products? I think many people believe in our quality ingredients and their benefits, in our integrity and honesty and in our story of caring not only for the skin, health and welfare of our customers and our team, but also for our planet. We are staunchly Kiwi-made and have upheld our principles; we have not put profit before standing against animal testing, microbead use, mineral oils

and plastic wrap. We use recyclable containers and packaging and embrace a no waste and no excess philosophy. I cherish the holistic approach of our company, creating a lifetime of value, care, respect and gratitude. Your skin looks incredible! What does your beauty regime look like and what are your own favourite products? Oh thank you! I think I am like all mothers and grandmothers – too busy and time poor! I think a beauty regime has to have simplicity and flexibility otherwise it will not work. That’s the philosophy I had in mind when creating our natural skincare range – I wanted something simple to use that women could tailor to their age and skin type. For my face and neck, I make a custom blend of essential facial moisture, miraculous facial oil and porcelain brightening serum, depending how dry, thirsty or nourished my skin is – every day can be different. At night, I cleanse with the skin refining cream cleanser and use our beautiful marshmallow regenerating night cream. As for my body, I have been using the same daily routine for 25 years – applying Linden Leaves natural body oil after my shower! My skin has always stayed hydrated until the next morning. What does 2020 have in store for Linden Leaves? To celebrate 25 years we are rolling out a fresh new look for the brand with beautiful crisp navy, white and rose gold accents. We have always used the best quality natural ingredients, but as the choices in this area explode, we are slowly but surely moving all our products to be 100 percent natural, which is why we had to say goodbye to our much loved Bathtime range. Our Miraculous Facial Oil was the first New Zealand made NATRUE certified organic cosmetic last year and our skincare range is 100 percent certified NATRUE natural. What’s more we launched two 100 percent natural home fragrance ranges this Christmas. We want to provide women with a luxurious yet natural choice of lifestyle and skincare products. I believe beauty comes from within, so it’s important we present a positive approach to beauty. We have introduced the strapline ‘Nurture Beautiful’ representing caring for yourself, one another and the environment. www.lindenleaves.com

Can you tell us about how the Linden Leaves story came about? It came from a mother desperate to help two of her children who had endless days and nights of being uncomfortable with allergies, rashes, eczema, asthma and extremely sensitive skin. I thought a lot about the huge use of steroid creams and highly chemical prescriptive medicines they were using on a daily basis. It inspired me to think back to my granny, who was born and raised on the Chathams with no doctor and a healthy, natural lifestyle. I thought how nature often knows best and how we have lost that deep connection to simplicity, a more gentle way of caring for ourselves and a healthier way of living. I became interested in plant-based ingredients and the natural goodness when oils and extracts are taken from them carefully. Plants also have a natural beauty and often a delightful fragrance – so different from the acrid smell of coal tar cream! I wanted to develop the beneficial feeling that I find in beautiful nature and fragrance, and our freeze dried botanicals and bespoke fragrances add to the sensory experience of our products. While not being a miracle cure, my children’s skin improved and the use of synthetic, chemical ingredients was drastically reduced, making me feel much more comfortable as a mother. Over time the story has continued to evolve. My daughter Juliet joined me in the business along the way and she has now taken the reins, driving the creative direction of the company and our beautiful new branding and new product ranges. A passion for natural products, strong ethics, pride in New Zealand and a nurturing familyoriented approach have remained our guiding values.

out & about

It’s all in the details Planning a conference this year and the list of options is overwhelming? Fancy treating your hard-working staff to a trip but you just don’t know where to start? What about trying to get your head around the logistics of organising a large overseas sporting event?

O

ften, this is when you need to enlist the help of the professionals and, in New Zealand, the HOT Events team is as experienced as they come. Business Director Victoria Wales and her team have worked on projects during the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, international conferences, incentive (reward) trips and major events. HOT Events is a division of House of Travel Christchurch City and operates within the

best practice management of a TAANZ bonded travel agency. Because they are IATA registered, it means they’re able to book air travel (group and FIT) for all clients, along with pre and post travel with specialist consultants. So, whether you’re organising something locally, abroad, or you have international guests coming to visit, they’re more than happy to discuss ways to help. “We love helping people no matter how big or small the

project,” Victoria says. “We arrange business travel and conferences, which can be an asset for a company if they don’t want to tie up their PA with all the bookings, we know the best suppliers, experiences and value, people can have. We know who to negotiate with and what will work. “We can help out just with venue sourcing then leave it to you, or help book flights and accommodation. It can be a little or a lot, even to the point where we can work with your marketing team to organise goals for the event, themes, programmes and guest speakers.” Lately, the team’s been working on events taking place in Fiji, Australia, Hawaii, Cape Town, Canada, New York and Buenos Aires, but Victoria stresses they don’t only work offshore. “We love hosting

people who come here to New Zealand too, for conferences, incentives or sporting events. We’ll organise all the coaches, transport logistics… and we can’t wait to welcome people back to Christchurch.” For this reason, they’re particularly excited about the opening of Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre in October 2020, meaning a whole new range of possibilities for clients holding conferences and events. Another boost is expected to be the announcement of direct flights into LA. “For us to showcase our city to international clients and guests is brilliant,” Victoria says. “It is a really good way of generating revenue for the city. They eat and drink in our restaurants, stay in accommodation and sometimes they make a family holiday out of it so they’re here for two to three nights and take part in activities and experiences. “We’re putting Christchurch back on the map.” For more, email events@ hotevents.co.nz or phone 03 371 6816. www.hotevents.com Metropol 20 February, 2020 15

customer base were quick to follow. The Bog has proved the ultimate stayer in a tough market. “We’ve continued with the Irish theme the whole time – it’s about the warm welcoming atmosphere, the good craic and sense of community, which in turn has created a deep loyalty that’s grown into natural longevity,” business partner, Darryll Park says. In a time when an alarming number of Christchurch bars and restaurants are popping up and then shutting up shop too soon after, The Bog has noteably remained and has cemented itself as one of the longest-standing establishments in our city. “Pubs are not about pillars and posts, they’re about people and we’re very proud of the hospitality The Bog has given Cantabrians for the past 21 years,” Darryl says. A noted venue for live music, many of the groups such as The Jamesons and The Black Velvet Band have been performing at The Bog since its inception. A comfortable niche for everyone, the crowd spans the gamut from regulars meeting postwork, to late-nighters seeking to dance the weekend away. The Bog is also a member of the “Guinness Pint Club”, a global network of Irish bars rejoicing in regulars who have drunk 100 pints of Guinness within a 12-month period. A 21-year milestone is a wonderful piece of good news for the Christchurch hospitality sector. You’re invited to join the weeklong birthday shenanigans – check out what’s on at facebook.com/thebogchch.

Get excited about investing The best way to get involved with investing is to keep it simple and let a financial adviser do it all for you. They know how to navigate the highs and lows and assist you in achieving the growth you desire. Bank term deposit rates are still at their lowest for quite some time and are likely to remain lower for longer.

A

listair Bean and Associates – Financial Advisers can assist you with investment planning for your short, medium and longer-term needs and goals. They can ‘make decisions for you, so you don’t have to’ by creating an investment portfolio specifically tailored for you, is constantly monitored, continues to assist you for the life of your investments and take into account any personal insurance and KiwiSaver needs. In what appears to have been a decade of unrest and turmoil, the New Zealand market and economy has performed spectacularly well compared to other global markets. Overseas investments have also offered opportunities to receive returns well above term deposit rates, inflation and the effects of tax. Investment portfolios tend to go up over time and typically outperform property (eg. your own home). They can skyrocket in a three-month period but also collapse at the same time.

Like a one-year term deposit, the first proof in the pudding of a managed portfolio is the value at the anniversary date of the original investment and then say the average of three years invested – very much like increases in the value of your own home. You know that in the first three months of purchasing a home that you would not likely be able to sell the home after three months and expect an increase in value. The same could also be said if you sold your own home after only two years but after three to 10 years you would like to think that there has been an increase in value. You could also expect the same for your reserve fund or nestegg investments. This is particularly when you need to use a Financial Adviser to assist in maintaining your investments who will constantly follow the market on your behalf. Some alternatives to term deposits are direct New Zealand and international shares, managed funds and property funds. With a mixture of these types of investments that cover short, medium and longer-term needs, you can get excited by following each individual investment, or just leave it up to your Financial Adviser at Alistair Bean and Associates to look after for you. None of your investments need to be locked in or have early repayment penalties. Investments are cashed in at their market value at the time of withdrawal (from three to 14 days in normal market conditions). Many clients also take regular monthly withdrawals to help them meet their budgetary needs. While past performance is no guarantee of future performance, clients of Alistair Bean and Associates – Financial Advisers, have been very pleased with the decisions that have been made on their behalf. Alistair Bean and Associates welcomes new clients interested in receiving quality advice with an individualised portfolio and oppurtunity for impressive returns over time. Pastel Passion By Clementine Page

1 2 3

This fashion season calls for a muted, pretty palette of pastel hues; colours reminiscent of macarons and cotton candy. So, what shades will be hanging in your wardrobe this year?

Whether you’re a girly girl or not, there’s no denying that the precious pastel pinks of 2020 – think sugary sweet peach and gentle rose shades fit for a princess – will freshen up any wardrobe. While ‘millennial pink’ still stands strong, a rival is in town; introducing ‘perracotta’, a trendy mashup of pink and terracotta that packs a serious pastel punch. Wave goodbye to 2019’s neomint and say hello to pistachio green! Our new favourite neutral, pistachio has been rising through the ranks over the last few seasons and it has well and truly staked its claim as the ‘it’ colour for 2020. This light and fresh hue works wonderfully well with stark white, denim and other pastel shades. Oh, and keep your eyes peeled for other delicate shades of green like mint and lime! Calling all minimalists! If you really do want a mellow yellow, then ‘sunlight’ is the shade you’ve been looking for. Sunlight yellow is an ethereal, romantic pastel shade that’s hot topic right now - namely because of its versatility. Keep things sweet and simple by pairing an investment piece - like a chic blazer, linen wide-legged trousers or a silk blouse – with off-white or pale denim.

Great garments! Located in the new shopping precinct of Rosemerryn Village at Lincoln is Belleza Boutique, a clothing store for women who are looking for something beautiful yet a little bit different.

O

wner Anna Green moved her business from its former Tai Tapu site (across the road from The Store) to its current site in 2018. It’s testament to her discerning eye in sourcing wonderfully wearable garments that many of her Tai Tapu clientele have followed her to Rosemerryn. Anna predominantly showcases Australian and New Zealand labels,

Soya Concept shirt, available from Belleza Boutique

with the occasional European label to fill in the gaps. With sizes ranging from eight to 18 (larger New Zealand labels can be sourced, if needed), her overarching focus is on style – finding the garment that’s right for the body shape and personality of customers. “There’s no pressure-selling here. It’s so important for women to feel happy and confident in the clothes they wear.” Budgets are another thing Anna takes into consideration; accordingly, there’s a good representation of both ends of the price spectrum – from affordable daytime casual wear through to the dressy/eveningwear category. From the outset with Belleza, Anna wanted women to walk into her boutique and feel there might be something there for them. “I handpick all the merchandise; it’s very much a curated collection. The strong relationships I’ve built with my customers over the years have stemmed from that philosophy.” Find Belleza Boutique on the corner of Edward Street and Eastfield Drive, Lincoln. Essential

autumn staples By Jess Murray

It’s nearing the end of summer and autumn is almost around the corner. Bearing that in mind, with a new season comes a new wardrobe. We’ve put together a checklist of the most essential staples when piecing together a fabulous fall collection.

1 2 3

Feet first: This little piggy… got cold. Autumn sometimes feels like a transitional season where some days are warm and others are just a bit nippy on the toes. If you’re wanting to put them away but still give your feet room to breathe, loafers are the perfect solution to your problems. Not to mention they are much more stylish than the jandals you’ve been rocking at the beach. Bust out the blazer: We’re yet to find a blazer that hasn’t looked stylish or completed any look (maybe grandma’s hand-me-down, but don’t tell her that). Whether you run with a petite tight-fitted blazer or go for more of an oversized look, there’s nothing wrong with giving your outfit a bit of personality. Not to mention they look very professional at the office and equally as cool and quirky in the bar should you decide to grab a drink after work. Meet in the middle: Midi skirts and dresses are everywhere. In saying that, it’s easy to see why – they’re just so versatile. Dress them up or dress them down. If you’re stressing about what to wear to an event start with a midi skirt or dress and work from there based on what you’re feeling. If you find the right one… it’s a match made in heaven.

Feeling snug: A sweater is something that you could quite possibly wear year-round, the summer nights can cool off quite quickly. But to make that look feel exclusive to autumn, it might pay to find a sweater in a colour complementary to the season. Ideally these will be colours that are both vibrant and warm such as coral, camel or orange. If these aren’t colours you’re normally comfortable with trying, there’s no better time to experiment. The trees are turning orange and brown and so should your wardrobe. Try tweed: When you’re feeling a bit clueless on what to wear… sometimes it’s best to channel your inner Cher. You should like totally try treed – is probably what she would say and she’s right. It’s bold and it’s exciting and it’s definitely a statement staple that could make an appearance every autumn.

From oral hygiene to overall health What is your choice? In what areas do you place value? What is important to you? Do you think about the future? What will your life look like in 10-15 years? Will your health be a priority? What are the chances that you will regret the decisions you make now when the future comes? Will you be discouraged that you did not do more to prevent ill health?

A

ccording to Jiljane Delaney from Simply Smiles, oral health is vital for general health. “What you do about it today and where you spend your money and time are likely predictors of your future,” she says. “We are told that the way we look is important. Our smile says a lot, but I have seen how getting older and having oral hygiene problems can be devastating to our health. “Life is too short to mess around with health!” Jiljane’s top three tips to be proactive and preventive in oral hygiene:

ounded by sisters Sarah and Dominique Dougall, this sustainable brand aims to create “small collections of trans-seasonal pieces” by supporting local businesses and manufacturers along the way. By working with New Zealand fabric suppliers, cutters and machinists – and both sisters completing garments themselves – they can track every stage of their product’s lifespan. The range includes tops and tees, jumpsuits, pants and dresses, all in a chic, natural colour palette of ivory, charcoal, olive, dark navy, paprika and oatmeal. New styles just launched include the Daisy singlet, Poppy blouse and Paper bag pant available in tones of mustard, sage, ivory and dark navy. Linen hair ties and scrunchies are available to purchase online, as are gift vouchers. Made from 100 percent linen – a material known for its ability to keep you cool in summer and warm in winter – the high-quality wash and wear collection is designed to last for many seasons. If your New Year’s resolution was to buy sustainably, Willou’s online store is the best place to start. Visit today to browse the exciting new range. www.willou.co.nz

Get your hips moving! If you suffer from hip pain, don’t just put it down to ‘old age’. With the right advice and treatment, you may be relieved to realise how quickly you can improve.

“D

o I need a hip replacement?” This is often the first place people’s minds wander to when they start experiencing hip pain. In fact, it is this fear that often prevents them from seeking treatment in the first place. The reality is that in many cases, the hip pain is not from

significant underlying arthritis which would lead to a hip replacement. With this in mind, what is the best approach? Cath Julius from Freedom Health Physiotherapy & Pilates has given three important pieces of advice to get you started on the pathway to better movement.

1. INVEST IN A THOROUGH ASSESSMENT TO ESTABLISH THE UNDERLYING CAUSE OF YOUR SYMPTOMS There are many factors that can lead to hip pain; arthritis is only one component and not the most common. Other factors include muscle weakness, muscle tightness and even daily postural habits that can load the area and cause a sensation of pain. The most important first step is to get an assessment with someone who is experienced in hip pain and rehabilitation.

2. GET MOVING Even if there is underlying arthritis, exercise is still recommended. Exercise provides mobility and blood flow to the affected area, strengthens the surrounding muscles and helps maintain a healthy weight which is important for joint load. If you’re unsure of what is the right type of exercise for you, speak to a health professional who is experienced in hip rehabilitation.

3. COMMIT TO A PLAN FOR LONG-TERM HEALTH OF YOUR HIPS AND BODY It can be tempting to search for quick solutions to pain but you need to commit to a long-term solution that will help not only your current hip symptoms, but your overall health in the long-term. In a nutshell, that means finding regular movement that your body enjoys.

The team at Freedom Health Physiotherapy & Pilates are experts at assessing and treating hip pain. Offering expert assessment, treatment, specific hip and lumbar programmes, and ongoing exercise solutions, they’re a great place to start getting you back to doing the things you love – for life. www.freedomhealth.co.nz

Although a large bra size can be portrayed as desirable, the reality for many women is that large breasts can cause physical and emotional discomfort. Carrying the extra weight can result in back, neck or shoulder pain and can limit physical activities. Some women also experience feelings of self-consciousness and struggle to find wellfitting clothes.

BE FO RE

T

he good news is Dr Grant Bellaney, founder of the Encoré Cosmetic Clinic, offers women an alternative to traditional breast reduction surgery, with extremely good results. “Most breasts, particularly in women over the age of 40, consist of 40 to 60 percent fat, so the removal of some of that fat through a procedure called tumescent liposuction can give a significant reduction in breast size,” he says. While traditional breast reduction surgery is carried out by plastic or general surgeons, breast reduction procedures using tumescent liposuction have been developed and practised by dermatological surgeons such as Dr Bellaney, who are skin and fat specialists. The procedure was first used in the 1980s and has an outstanding safety record. “The procedure also has huge advantages over traditional surgery. It is a form of ‘keyhole surgery’ so results in little or no scarring as the small incisions the procedure is done through heal very quickly, usually without

needing sutures. It is simpler and less painful than surgery and the recovery time is far quicker,” Dr Bellaney says. It is also safer because it is performed under tumescent anaesthetic, which has fewer risks than surgery that is carried out under general anaesthetic. There are also fewer side effects. With traditional surgery about 10 to 25 percent of patients can experience a loss of sensitivity around the nipples or an inability to breastfeed afterwards. With tumescent liposuction, the risk reduces to less than one percent. “It’s a day procedure, so women can go home afterwards and are usually back to their regular routine within a few days.” Dr Bellaney is the only specialist in the South Island performing this technique and has successfully performed this procedure on hundreds of women over the last 10 years. astern cultures have always revered this hot spot on the colour wheel. During Chinese New Year mandarins, tangerines, satsumas are symbols of abundance and fortune. To wear the vibrant orange shade of tangerine brings happiness and enthusiasm – the mantra for 2020. Tangerine is Fashion and Lifestyle Coach Angela Stone’s favourite colour – and has been for a while. “My wardrobe is full of it; skirts, tops, trousers, dresses. Colour adds vibration and it really makes me feel alive, as it’s such a positive colour.” Tangerine hails from the orange palette, but it’s a richer more saturated shade, just like the skin of its fruity namesake – injected with a juicy squeeze of scarlet. Angela says it is a perfect colour to wear for those who would normally shy away from standing out in siren red. “It is kinder and softer than red – more subtle.” Tangerine will show off a golden tan and will also add warmth to those with a more porcelain complexion. “It is a very flattering universal colour, as everyone suits it. It can be paired with almost any other shade, including other universal colours like forest green or cobalt blue. Blonde, brunettes and red heads – we all look great in it.” We don’t have to retire an outfit once autumn hits. Tangerine is a sumptuous pop of colour pared against more retiring shades of autumn – such as darker greens, chocolates and burgundies. Tangerine evokes a dream escape to a tropical retreat, sipping tequila sunrises by the pool. Wear it every way – from psychedelic crop tops to maxi skirts and boots.

ith two modern and contemporary stores located at Bush Inn and South City, the salon have been producing haircuts for everyone from preschoolers to pensioners – and all ages in between – for more than 30 years. “Haircuts for Haircuts is a longestablished cutting bar that has continued to provide professional, affordable haircuts for men, women and children, while also delivering an efficient and friendly service in a welcoming environment,” Michelle says. Aiming to always keep prices reasonable, the ever-popular Clipper Cut is still available for just $13.

The team also offers a loyalty system with every eighth haircut free, as well as pensioner and student discounts. “We want every client to leave the salon happy with their haircut and we always keep up-to-date with the latest trends and styles. Groundbreaking health screening The year 2020 is already being touted as the year of health and wellness, with our cravings for self-care reaching epic levels.

M

any of us are still on the New Year’s resolutions bandwagon, we’re increasingly turning vegan, we’re ramping up our exercise and we’re throwing back the kombucha. And that’s a great thing, right? When it comes to your health, there’s no shortage of products on the market, from lotions and potions to vitamins and supplements. Some make us feel good but most make little to no difference. So what’s working and what’s not… or more importantly, how will we ever know? After all, many dietary deficiencies don’t become evident until the damage is done. Well, a groundbreaking new start-up in New Zealand may actually have the answer! Marvel Health’s revolutionary body scanner can actually pinpoint

with scientific accuracy exactly what is going on in your body. “Smart health and tele-medicine are some of the hottest buzz words out there right now,” Marvel Health Co-Founder Tiamara Williams explains. “But we’re actually leading real-world change in this field.” A smart health screening and monitoring system designed for preventative and regenerative medicine, Marvel Health uses advanced, non-invasive diagnostic technology to provide state of the art analysis and reporting on every aspect of your health. After an extensive total body scan, a full report is put together, outlining any areas of concern from all the systems in the body, including cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, nervous system, endocrine

system, blood and lymph, urogenital, respiratory, skeletal, immune and sensory. It not only checks the state of every organ in the body, but it also checks for the presence of disease and pre-disease indicators, picks up more than 150 microbes (such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites and worms), identifies 19 of the most toxic environmental contaminants and provides an extensive allergy profile. A follow up consultation with their doctor or naturopath, will provide a full explanation of the report, with a recommended therapy plan to address the identified issues “GPS are under increasing pressure to make a diagnosis within a 15-minute consultation, based on one symptom,” says Co-Founder Dr Machi Mannu, who has been running a similar model in Spain for seven years, before starting up in New Zealand. Vitamin D is vital for bone

and muscle function. Many of our aging population are prescribed this essential vitamin. However, to achieve optimum function of vitamin D, you need selenium which is lacking in New Zealand soil. In the absence of adequate selenium, vitamin D encourages absorption of toxic heavy metals such as mercury. The scan can identify not only selenium and other essential micronutrients but also toxic metals present. Already they are finding many New Zealanders have just that. That’s just one example of how the scanner can prevent deficiencies and ensure you are getting exactly what you need to get healthy and stay healthy. A three-month follow up can track your progress, presenting you with a real-time report of your percentage improvement. “We pinpoint exactly what’s wrong or what’s required and, from there, we recommend the use of compounds, minerals and enzymes etc which are all naturally found in the body or natural substances which are backed up by extensive clinical and scientific research,” Dr Mannu explains. “We’re taking the guesswork out of medicine.”

Canterbury Bride

Tying the knot in 2020 By Jess Murray

1.

Green thumb: Being sustainable is trending and Mother Nature would give that a big seal of approval. Reduce your wedding’s carbon footprint by purchasing a pre-loved wedding dress, adopting an heirloom ring, avoiding bottled water or even refraining from printing out hundreds of paper invitations (opt for online). If you’re feeling bold, why not try a zero-waste event… it might just give your guests the push they need to try it at their own wedding. You wouldn’t dump rubbish onto your guests as they’re sitting down at your wedding, so don’t forgot about one of the most important guests there – Mother Nature.

38 20 February, 2020 Metropol

2.

You’ve got your something old? Something borrowed? Something blue? Well if you’re still running around trying to find your something new – we’ve got you covered. Who says the rhyme must only apply to what the bride is wearing down the aisle? We investigate the upcoming trends of tying the knot in 2020.

Party of two (or a few): Who says extravagant weddings are essential to a lifetime of happy marriage (the rom-coms don’t count)? Forking out the big dollars for people who were even umming and ahhing coming to the event may seem silly, but it happens. That’s why limiting your nearest and dearest to 40 – or even less – is starting to become a regular occurrence. Less people means the budget per guest is higher, this leaves room for personal and even elaborate touches – this is one trend that is all about quality over quantity! If you’re worried about not enough people seeing the ceremony, they can see it all online when you post about it (we’re sure you will!).

3.

Help yourself: One of the great things about a wedding, as a guest, is the open bar. Anyone who tells you otherwise is just trying to be polite. Most of us know the process of going up to a bar, ordering a drink and walking away. Make this part of the night a fun experience for everyone by including a self-serve refreshments area. Wall mounted dispensers, punch bowls, a jampacked bar of pourover drinks accompanied by some garnishes to top off the drinks; we’re yet to hear a negative. No need to think of signature cocktails because every guest will be able to create one of their own. Although it may pay to have one of the staff helping to occasionally cast an eye over the set-up… just in case Uncle Jim starts to drink enough for himself… and five others.

Pitcher Perfect By Clementine Page

Funky jugs and pitchers are as cool as a glass of chilled water (or wine)! Better yet, they don’t just bring style factor to table - why not make the most of their beauty and use them in creative ways too?

W

hether it’s to pour punch at a party on a balmy summer’s evening or orange juice at a breakfast buffet, the traditional jug supposedly has one single purpose - to hold liquid. But when they’re not being used they hang out in the cupboard collecting dust, only to be pulled out for special occasions. What a waste! Perhaps it’s time to start making a feature of these useful utensils. While pitchers and carafes work wonderfully well as receptacles for wine and water, they’re also ideal for holding a beautiful bouquet of flowers on your dining table,

or making a spectacle out of your boring wooden kitchen implements. Add a pinch of pizzaz to your kitchen by adorning open shelves with a colourful collection of jugs in different shapes and sizes - you’re bound to stumble across some pretty pitchers when sifting through your local charity shops. If you want to give your old jugs a new lease of life, consider making them into decorative features by filling simple, clear jugs with marbles, colourful stones or a thin string of fairy lights - or make them into pots for your favourite indoor flowers, herbs, cacti or other greenery!

Dedicated to GF

The Totally Gluten Free Bakery (TGF Bakery) is dedicated to making delicious and solely gluten-free food daily at their Colombo Street premises, which can be bought over the counter or be delivered anywhere in the city. In fact, TGF Bakery has become so trusted a name within the Coeliac and GF community that they pretty much deliver to cities nationwide.

D

espite a couple of moves and the disruption of the earthquakes, TGF Bakery, which began back in 2006, has maintained strong and longstanding loyalty from its customers because they appreciate the wraparound service from owners Wendy and Lori. It’s something they both take very seriously. “From the outset, our business was all about serving those with Coeliac disease and GF requirements. We’ve met so many amazing people and continue to do so. We love the face-to-face interaction with customers, getting to know them and understanding their needs is

very important to us,” Lori says. With their move to Sydenham, TGF Bakery now enjoys a prime location nestled amidst a smart shopping precinct with very convenient parking for customers to pop in for whatever they need, including GF flours and other baking ingredients, or just relax with friends over a coffee. In many ways, TGF is more than a bakery – it’s a hub… the hub of its community. Find Totally Gluten Free Bakery at 290b Colombo Street, phone 03 341 1172. I

Recreating a coffee icon Bink Bowler started making the coffee we have all come to love at the sprightly age of 15 and at age 19, 13 years ago, he and some other coffee guys founded Memphis Belle Coffee House in Wellington.

t became iconic, gaining a cult following in the capital. Bink learnt so much about the coffee business, he decided to take that knowledge to the next level and open the Black and White Coffee Cartel which permeates Christchurch. When it got to five cafés in the space of three or so years, Bink got what he dreamed of, a bigger coffee company heading in the right direction and he thought to himself, ‘What’s this all about? Why am I doing this?’ Ending up spending much of his time at a computer, he’d lost what he really loved about coffee; people. When it got to 10 shops he decided to step out of the Managing Director role and seek what made him happy, with the blessing of his partners at Black and White. When Bink heard Memphis Belle was closing in 2019, he decided he would recreate the vision and set about creating a grown up version of Belle that represents the Bink of today, just as the renowned coffee house did 10 years ago. So, the evolution has come full circle, with a return to Belle coffee house on the corner of New Regent and Armagh Streets. Memphis Belle never left Bink’s heart nor did his faith in Christchurch. After working in the hard yards in Wellington he’s seen the bright future that

is central Christchurch and in relaunching, he rediscovered quality of life. With a wealth of experience, a new spark in his heart and passion for a great coffee house, Bink has made his triumphant return with Belle. Even though coffee houses have changed since Memphis Belle started a decade ago, good culture and great service haven’t. With its unique vibrant style and food to tempt even the fussiest breakfast gourmet with a stunning creamy mushrooms on toast, classic eggs benedict and if you’re really hungry, the bigger breakfast, loaded nachos or just a bowl of fries. With a full kitchen there’s a tasty treat for almost everyone. Belle has returned in style with great coffee. Classics are always in style and Belle is all about doing the basics and doing them exceptionally well. This is a place that is about good people, good coffee, good food and a whole lotta charm! Belle operates with gratitude toward all of those who were involved in the original Memphis Belle story. It’s just a little bit of Wellington in the Garden City, but still quintessential Christchurch. Check it out for yourself from 7am to 4pm Monday to Friday, and 8:30am to 4:30pm Saturday and Sunday in the heart of the central city.

businesses, resulting in the profits being re-directed from Christchurch to larger cities in the North Island, or even overseas. If you are setting up a hospitality business or are thinking of moving coffee suppliers, it is smart business and also community-minded to research your local roasteries first, before looking at brands from other centres. Deb and Ian Riach of Coffee Worx have been supplying the local market for the past 11 years and have been in the hospitality scene in Canterbury for the past 25 years, so they have loads of industry experience and a great understanding of the pressures associated with running a hospitality business. Coffee Worx has won several coffee awards and have maintained excellent relationships with its customers over the years. Spicy Sprout & Mushroom Noodles

with Five-Spice

INGREDIENTS 300g brussels sprouts and their sprout tops, the sprouts halved or quartered, the sprout tops shredded 1 tbsp oil or ghee 400g mushrooms, any type, roughly chopped 3cm piece of ginger, finely chopped or grated 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped or grated 1 fresh red chilli, seeds too, finely chopped 3/4 tsp five-spice 2 bundles of noodles 1 tbsp maple syrup 2 tbsp tamari 1 tbsp lemon or lime juice or vinegar 1 tsp fish sauce or extra tamari 2 tbsp black sesame seeds or chopped nuts or seeds, to serve Fresh herbs such as coriander or mint, to serve (optional) Chilli garlic sauce to serve (optional) Fry the sprouts in oil or ghee in a wok or large deep-sided frying pan over a high heat for four minutes. For the first few minutes, fry them in an even layer, untouched for a minute or so, then stir or shake the pan to get to the other side. This will give you nice golden edges, which adds flavour. Chop the mushrooms, then add them too, stir-frying for five minutes along with the ginger, garlic, chilli and five-spice. If you’ve got sprout tops, add them now to briefly fry. Meanwhile, get the noodles cooking in a second saucepan following the label instructions; they should be ready once the sprouts are. Once the sprouts are tender and the mushrooms have started to go golden and any liquid they have released has been cooked off, add the maple syrup, tamari, citrus (and fish sauce if using) to the sprouts pan and mix everything together.

Finish by adding the cooked noodles and tossing everything together for 30 seconds so the noodles pick up the flavours, adding a tiny splash of water if you need to. Serve with the sesame seeds, fresh herbs and chilli sauce (if using) on top.

2020

FOOD PREDICTIONS In recognition of the new decade, we caught up with My Food Bag’s development kitchen team, comprising of Nadia Lim and 13 talented chefs and nutritionists, about what we can expect to see on the culinary horizon for 2020.

1. Mindful eating – Consideration for health and the environment are on the rise. When it comes to our food choices, people are more aware of what they’re putting in their bodies and their footprint. Mindful eating is also about being present while we eat, appreciating food and spending quality time at the dinner table.

4. Zero-waste and home composting – Over the past decade ‘nose to tail’ and ‘stalk to tip’ have become commonplace. This year we’re continuing to lessen our waste from the beginning to the end of our food’s journey. Home composting is also on the rise with composts and urban worm farms increasing in popularity.

2. Out with fad dieting – When it comes to health and weight loss, sustainability in all things is the way forward. Understanding the tried-and-tested method of eating real, nutritionally balanced food with a vegetable focus will become the ultimate goal.

5. Mezze plates are the new platters: The bowl reached its peak in 2019 and although this movement isn’t going anywhere, the platter is catching up – think Middle Eastern influences, elaborate grazing platters and mezze plates.

3. Home food fast, not fast food – Convenience is key. With Kiwis short on time, they want to be able to prep and cook food fast, but this doesn’t have to mean eating badly. Homecooked and veggie-packed ready meals are in hot demand.

6. Mini foodies: The next decade will see kids’ palates continuing to evolve. Forget chicken nuggets and chips! Thanks to the rise in popularity of baby-led weaning, olives and sushi are becoming everyday staples for many youngsters. My Food Bag predicts New Zealanders are raising a generation of foodies interested in eating and cooking nutrientdense foods with bold flavours.

7. Nut butters: New Zealand’s nut butter industry has taken off in the last five years with several artisan suppliers such as Pic’s and Forty Thieves providing a range of simple, minimally processed nut butters free from sugar and added vegetable oils. Peanut, almond, cashew and hazelnut butters, as well as tahini are becoming more common in cooking, adding flavour and texture to sauces and dressings. 8. Alternative flours: Alternative flours have been used as replacements in baking for years but now they’re going mainstream and forming the bases of staple food items like pasta and bread. Rapidly growing in popularity due to the rise in gluten-free and coeliac and the desire for more diverse foods, these flours are becoming regular supermarket purchases for those without dietary requirements. 9. Fermentation: Kombucha and sauerkraut are so 2019! However, the rise and focus on gut health is here to stay in 2020 and this will see an increased focus on improved digestion from prebiotics, the non-digestible starch our gut bacteria feeds off, which is typically known as fibre. Think lots of veggies and fibrerich foods like broccolini, sweetcorn, whole grains and chickpeas. 10. Is smashed avo out? We’d be lying if we said avo on toast is on the out, but the bread base is changing and Kiwis are becoming increasingly creative when it comes to their avo toppings and add-ons. We’re moving from ciabatta and rye to bespoke sourdoughs made from fermented oat and potato, as well as gluten-free almond, turmeric and cricket bread. Meanwhile, favourite toppings in 2020 will include whipped pumpkin and feta, tahini or almond butter and kimchi mushrooms, crushed peas or crispy buckwheat and hummus.

RAJA HOMEWARES FRINGE BEADED CHANDELIER

Fringe Festival By Clementine Page

A retro revival like no other, there’s a mid-century trend bringing refined glamour and a flirty edge to 2020 abodes.

W

e’re seeing a healthy dose of frisky trimmings like tassels and fringing spicing things up amongst interior accessories, as designers turn away from the traditional minimalism of yesteryear and embrace rich textures and opulent accessories. While it’s best to allocate several fringed items to one interior space for continuity, you can keep things simple by swapping existing accessories such as throws, rugs and cushions for funky fringed designs. Feeling brave? Fringed furniture like couches, chairs and ottomans make a luxurious statement. You’re free to use your imagination when it comes to the colour palette, but we recommend deep reds, golds,

greens and blues for ultimate elegance. Jazz up your boudoir with fringed bedspreads, wall hangings and curtains – even mirrors are getting a makeover. Don’t be afraid to mix and match fabrics like satin, velvet and crushed silk for an old-world feel. Forget crystal chandeliers, tasteful tassels are where it’s at when it comes to luxurious lighting. From floor lamps to wall lights to hanging shades, creative lighting is one of the easiest ways to quickly transform the feel of a room. Create flow through your home by utilising luxe lampshades with fringe detailing. Inspired? Give your home pizazz and its own individual style with the fun fringe factor!

Five Acre Farm, or Te Kiripi Cottage, is a beautiful 1900s historic cottage located in the heart of Heathcote Valley that could well be the next location of your muchneeded getaway.

ucked away just out of Christchurch, with less than a 20-minute drive, this hidden gem has nothing but raving five-star reviews; befitting of a beloved old cottage that has just been given a second chance at life. Follow the row of old oaks and you’ll find a luxury boutique cottage that offers you all the promises of a tranquil time away, whether that be with your special someone, group of friends or family troop. If you were leaning more towards scheduling in some ‘me-time’; you won’t be entirely alone as a friendly flock of sheep and two cows also call the cottage home. Situated on five acres of serene farmland, it’s easy to see how the cottage acquired its name. The cottage is selfcontained and fully equipped with all the essentials such as a kitchen, laundry and three bathrooms. Amenities include wifi, free parking on the premises and a beautiful indoor fireplace. Previous guests have nothing but praise for the restored cottage, with some struggling to even, “put into words how truly fantastic Five Acre Farm is,” according to one review. But the homestay wasn’t always a dream destination; it has needed a lot of tender loving care and Christchurch Architectural Designer Brie Thomas and partner Ben were the perfect pair to give it just that. “The cottage was lucky to survive the earthquakes and has required a lot of love and labour to get it back,” Brie says. The couple have been posting updates on the restoration via Instagram since May last year, including features of their very fluffy and friendly paddock locals, which is a warm welcome to break up the newsfeed. There’s more than a century worth of history behind this cottage, with the first ever occupants taking up residency in 1910. A widow and her six children called the cottage home, sharing many memories at the property, one of which includes one of the children being married in the garden. The pair took to Instagram to tell this tale and expressed that they are “hoping for many more special memories at Te Kiripi Cottage”. The garden has been a defining feature of the cottage that has been a talking point for most guests; some excited at the fact they got to wake up to a pukeko in the garden and others thought it was great to be able to spend time in a garden where several fruits and vegetables were flourishing. Brie and Ben made sure to show their support to local stores by making “a conscious effort to use local Christchurch business, companies and products during the renovation”. Which makes this cottage feel that little bit more special to guests showcasing it for what it is… a home away from home. www.instagram.com/ fiveacrefarm.nz Metropol 20 February, 2020 53

Flooring with a story This New Zealand story goes back decades, so too does the story of Foret flooring, which was founded almost a century ago.

A

t the heart of this local business, is a love of timber and, while sometimes these magnificent buildings can’t remain, Foret’s suppliers carefully and respectfully salvage their essence, providing timber that has stories in its soul. Imagine at the heart of your design project, timber that has a legacy of hundreds of years. New timber is being sourced all the time and every piece is special – sometimes very rare. Sourced from reputable suppliers from genuine reclaimed demolition material or declassified mill product, the company’s reclaimed timber is carefully and respectfully salvaged to keep its essence and its story intact for your design project; heritage-rich timber for future generations to enjoy, cherish and admire. Foret flooring tells a story of how the past meets the

sustainable future with its European-sourced French oak. It is primarily sourced from a family that are true artisans in the French timber industry. STYLING BY KATE ALEXANDER, PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRYCE CARLETON

D.I.Y Décor

While colour can seem scary for some to introduce to their walls, a life in a home without any colour at all can be a pretty dismal one. One of the most wonderful things about paint is that you can use it on almost anything, and a just a little bit can go a long way when it comes to transforming your space. Weekend warrior your way to a more colourful kitchen and dining area with a couple of quick and easy D.I.Y projects.

O

riginally looking pretty lacklustre colourwise, these bar stools needed just a testpot worth of paint spread in a couple of coats to give them a total refresh. We used Resene Party Zone, Resene Away We Go and Resene XOXO to give our stools a pick-me-up. For a more whimsical feel, we also masked off the end of each leg below the footrest and gave them two coats of another one of the colours, but you could also paint yours the same colour as the seat for a more uniform look. The kitchen cabinets coordinate in Resene Aura, a soft minty green that pairs perfectly with warm whites and a range of different greens. The minimalist lipped shelf, painted Resene Atlas, provides some contrast within the space. A few small vases, plant pots and

Extend your summer! Hello summer! We have long awaited your arrival and are happily basking in the great outdoors once again. Summer just can’t help but bring friends and family together for barbecues, enjoying cool beverages outside and finally getting to uncover the patio furniture that has been in hiding for the past several months.

he timing is perfect for expanding your indoor living into the warm and sunny outdoors. Louvre Solutions can create a custom space that suits your individual needs with a rain-censored louvre roof, complete with options such as pull-down side screens, LED lighting and heat lamps. Entertaining at home has never been easier and Canterbury-based Louvre Solutions, owned and operated by Craig Rogers, knows how to create the perfect outdoor space. Whether you’re entertaining, relaxing, or simply expanding your indoor area, Louvre Solutions can bring your ultimate outdoor environment to fruition. The louvres move at your command to allow full sunshine, filter shade or provide solid rain protection. The roofs are water proof and you will no longer need to cover your outdoor furniture, barebecues and upholstery, as they will be protected from the harsh New Zealand elements. Louvre Solutions’ louvre systems are manufactured with quality elements, precision engineering and aesthetic options to realise your vision of the ultimate outdoor space. The patio louvre system is strong and conforms to all wind and snow load requirements. The louvres integrate flawlessly into any architectural style. Louvre Solutions manufactures its louvres from extruded aluminium which offers greater durability than traditional patio covers. These components will outperform fabric and plastic in heat, wind and rain.

“When we started out, these premium products were prohibitively expensive and reserved for the elite,” Craig explains. “Even with ongoing improvements and advancements in technology to our products, we are able to offer Louvre Solutions at an affordable price to a wider market. We are now able to be accessible to markets from entry-level properties to very high-end spec homes.” There are many benefits to a louvre roof, ranging from aesthetic to practical and environmental. They are a brilliant addition to homes and can be proactively planned as part of the design and build process or can be retrofitted once the need is identified post construction. On a practical note, the roofs create shading when required and light and heat from the sun when necessary which can significantly reduce energy required for cooling and heating. With more than 15 years in the industry, Louvre Solutions’ reputation has been built on a solid foundation. Craig and his team pride themselves on their burgeoning portfolio of repeat and referred business generated through word of mouth, independent builders, architects, landscape architects and building companies. Louvre Solutions manufactures its products at its Canterbury-based factory. A louvre roof can be ready for installation within four to six weeks, making today the perfect time to order yours to ensure an extended summer of outdoor enjoyment. www.louvresolutions.co.nz Metropol 20 February, 2020 57

Creating the perfect home just for you

UNIQUE APPROACH TO HOME DESIGN Designer Homes (DH) Senior Executive, Ajit Kumar, says it’s been interesting to follow the evolution of architectural designs over the last decade. Prior to then, New Zealand homes tended to be of one architectural influence – such as Victorian, English cottage, Greek Neoclassical, Cape Cod, Ranch and Spanish – but a far different approach to home design has since taken root and is flourishing; the finest examples of which can now be seen gracing our landscape up and down the country.

“W

e don’t see singular architectural designs in New Zealand any longer,” Ajit says. “Today’s homes are about reflecting the lives of the people living in them. Our designs are client-driven because it’s paramount we meet their needs and requirements.”

Ajit says the typical New Zealand family home of 2020 might be a design that’s a blend of influences and styles – be it European, Asian or American – reflecting their cultural heritage and experience. “For example, a client might request a kitchen reminiscent of kitchens in India,

to give that touchstone of familiarity, as well as function and purpose, but the rest of the plan may well be something that has a ‘Kiwi feel’ to it, which complements and completes the overall design seamlessly.” With a DH build, clients can choose from either their single level or double level plans and, with a template of pricing based on three build categories – Standard, Grande and Luxe – it makes for a straightforward and simple process when it comes to budget parameters. Proud to uphold their motto that they build homes literally from the ground up, the team at DH follows an eightstep process (which can be viewed on the website under Our Process), to ensure each project undertaken is a full and collaborative working relationship with clients to achieve their dream home,

from the moment the site is chosen right through to build completion when the keys are handed over. With the team currently working on five residential projects in Auckland and Christchurch, clients are assured that their build is in the hands of extremely competent, professional people whose knowledge on developing bespoke interiors and exteriors is rich and vast. The underpinning philosophy of DH has always been the close link between the disciplines of architecture and interior design. Key to achieving a home that’s beyond ordinary is to plan the home that is timeless and survives design trends. “Our homes are distinctive because they not only reflect the individuality of the people with architectural designs of their choice, but they’re also the most innovative in design and, with an attention to detail as to colours and materials, clients are assured their home will look just as superb 30 years from now as it does today,” Ajit says.

THINK THEMATICALLY Displays that have a central concept always look a bit tighter and more put together than those that don’t. Creating an overall theme will help you strike just the right note.

By Melinda Collins

When it comes to decorating, there’s nothing quite like creating a space with ‘art and soul’. A gallery wall might just be the state of play if you want to do just that.

CREATIVE CONSISTENCY There are endless variations available when it comes to creating a gallery wall, from highly structured and uniform to varied and eclectic. Keeping it cohesive doesn’t have to mean staid and uniform; mixing different shapes, sizes and hues is a great way to create a polished design, provided you pay mind to balance and visual weight.

We’ve got some hot tips for creating a cool wall.

MITIGATE ASBESTOS RISKS

Asbestos has hit the headlines again after the discovery of the fibrous carcinogen during the demolition work at Ara Institute of Canterbury’s Christchurch campus. The discovery is expected to add $560,000 more than budgeted to the demolition costs.

W

orkSafe has launched a new tool on its website to help businesses develop their asbestos management plans. Businesses have a duty to manage risks associated with asbestos exposure, including completing an asbestos management plan if required.

The plan must be kept at the workplace and be available to workers and other businesses operating there. “WorkSafe responded to feedback and worked with businesses to develop an easyto-use template that guides them through the process of providing the required

information,” WorkSafe Head of Health and Technical Services Catherine Epps says. An asbestos management plan sets out where any identified asbestos or asbestoscontaining material (ACM) is present, its condition and how it will be managed. These plans are required by the

Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2016 for workplaces where asbestos or ACM has been identified, or is likely to be present. “We have a goal of reducing asbestos-related disease by 50 percent by the year 2040,” Catherine says. “Our asbestos licensing regime is designed to protect the health of workers and others. “The hazardous product is still found in many buildings and structures, but with good information businesses can make robust decisions to protect workers and others who might be at risk.” WorkSafe has comprehensive information on its website, including what businesses are required to do about managing asbestos exposure risks. www.worksafe.govt.nz

A

s this is my first Metropol column for 2020, I would like to wish you a happy – and prosperous – New Year. It’s already shaping up to be an exciting year ahead. Two key milestones will be the opening of Te Pae Convention Center in October and the completion of the Lyttelton Cruise Berth Terminal – both of which will help drive increases to our tourism market. In May, Ōtautahi will host TRENZ 2020, our country’s biggest business-to-business travel and trade event, attracting 300 international travel sellers. We will also be ramping up to host the 2021 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup final, with benefits including a global audience of 180 million, $3 million spending boost and 15,000 extra bed nights. At a political level, locally we will see our new council hit its stride with a new Chief Executive at the helm, as well as a strong focus on transparency following last year’s review. Nationally, political activity will ramp up in the lead up to the September General Election – the $12 million infrastructure investment is a prime example. I expect further announcements to be around increases in welfare and health spending, and some tax or effective tax relief. Globally, we can expect to see continued economic volatility including the US (particularly given the November presidential election), the tension in Iran, the outcomes of Brexit and the impact of the global coronavirus outbreak – all significant for international trade and our economy. That’s all adding up to a year of change and challenges – but also opportunities – for our city.

T

his weekend we mark the ninth anniversary of the devastating 22 February 2011 earthquake that claimed 185 lives and impacted on thousands more, changing our city forever. It will be a time for us to pause and reflect on the tragedy, to remember the people and places that we lost, and all the challenges so many have had to confront for years. It will also be a time for us to reflect on how far we have come. We can always be proud of our achievements, both large and small. And we can think of the myriad of ways we have come together to support each other and to create opportunity out of adversity. We can see a modern, vibrant central city full of people friendly spaces that makes a feature of the Ōtākaro Avon River. We have replaced many community facilities throughout the city with modern, multi-purpose facilities that bring people together. We have restored many of our heritage buildings, rebuilt damaged infrastructure and created new world-class facilities like our Tūranga library and the soon-to-be opened Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre. The city is going from strength to strength, with the new developments creating a real sense of vibrancy. As a city we will never forget the tragic events of 22 February 2011 – or the people we lost – however we can look forward with confidence to the future, knowing that no matter what, we can always rely on each other to come together in times of need and make the most of everything we each have to offer.

W

e recently completed the first quarter of Christchurch’s biggest jigsaw puzzle, which at first may not seem like a major achievement but it has 43,000 pieces! The façade on Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre is a significant feat of architecture and engineering. Each of the fibre cement tiles is placed individually on a panel in a layout that creates the look of a braided Canterbury river. But colour is only one part of the equation, with a complex curved steel structure to support the 1,604 panels required to deliver the full effect. Designed by Woods Bagot in association with Warren & Mahoney, and Matapopore, the five varied tones of grey and different surface textures in the façade give the building the characteristics of a ‘living surface’. This intricate façade was selected because Te Pae Christchurch sits on a prime central city site, chosen because it’s on the doorstep of some of the best dining, shopping and accommodation Christchurch has to offer. So, we had a responsibility to deliver a facility befitting this prominent riverside site and the significant buildings surrounding it. It is great to see that vision coming to life as this iconic facility will be around for a long time. The tiles are expected to last for more than 50 years and are fully recyclable, as it’s unlikely anyone will want to take a second go at putting this puzzle together.

he start of 2020 has been dominated by global concern for the outbreak and spread of the new coronavirus. The situation is expected to have a significant impact on the economy. Christchurch and the South Island have a strong, warm and mutually valuable relationship with China and we hope for an early end to this unique global health event. Ōtautahi continues to thrive as New Zealand’s second largest city and people are taking notice of what we’ve been up to here. Our city is the obvious yet understated place to live, work, visit and invest, and we at ChristchurchNZ feel lucky to be playing our part in its future. The latest statistics show 2019 spending in the central city was up more than 10 percent on 2018, and international visitor spending was up 15 percent. Both visitor and resident spending continues to trend upwards, and we are pleased to help drive this through promotional campaigns. ChristchurchNZ aims to ignite bold ambition across our resident and business communities and has set measurable goals to make Ōtautahi Christchurch a fantastic place to live and work. We’ve called these our Prosperity Framework, setting aspirations for the future of Christchurch’s economy. We’re excited to continue to promote the city and share this great place nationally and globally.

he second month of the year has almost gone and there is no better time than the present to make good on the resolutions you’ve made for yourself. Whether you’re thinking of launching your own startup, joining an ambitious new startup team, or really getting into the Christchurch and Canterbury innovation scene, you’ve got some incredible opportunities coming up to meet your new tribe. Dip your toes in by coming along to the startup ecosystem fixture – Coffee & Jam. Coffee & Jam takes place on the second Tuesday of every month from 12:30pm to 1:30PM at EPIC. Here, you’ll find a broad cross section of people all focused on entrepreneurship, startups, and innovation in our region. Just Google ‘coffeeandjam’ to find upcoming event details. Also check out Canterbury Angel’s Pitch & Pizza event. Canterbury Angels had a record 2019 with $845,000 raised and nine deals done. 2020 looks to surpass if momentum is anything to go by. At Pitch & Pizza, you’ll get to hear some practice pitches from local startups then eat pizza with the crowd afterward. Check it out at www.canterburyangels.nz. Finally, if you’ve always wanted to be part of a startup team but didn’t have an idea (or a team), we’ve got you covered! This year’s ultimate intro to entrepreneurship, Startup Weekend, will take place on 22-24 May. Christchurch is a city that has rolled out the red carpet for startups and innovators – so get amongst it! We’re looking forward to meeting you.

cannot believe we are already in February with the Christmas rush and holiday now a distant memory. We are now fully launched into this new decade and I believe we, as a city and region, are ready to own it. The last 10 years were tough on our city and our people, but in true southern style, we rose from that challenge and showed the world what we are made of.

It’s a new city built for a new era and we should be proud that we are ready for all the opportunities it will bring. We started the new decade on a positive note with Christchurch landing a spot on the New York Times prestigious travel list, which is a fabulous accolade to our rebuild efforts thus far. There is a positive vibe amount the business community for the new decade, with some large-scale projects being completed this year, including the Convention Centre and new-dedicated Cruise Berth in Lyttelton… and hopefully a decision on the long-awaited multi-use Arena. It always surprises me to hear that some of our people have only just ventured back into the city centre for the first time in years but heartened they enjoyed the experience. It’s a new city built for a new era and we should be proud that we are ready for all the opportunities it will bring.

PB Contractors has now installed a quarter of the 43,000 herringbone tiles that will make up the design and Ōtākaro Limited Chief Executive John Bridgman says achieving this iconic look has been a significant feat of architecture and engineering. “Each of the fibre cement tiles is placed individually on a panel in a layout that creates the look of a braided Canterbury river. But colour is only one part of the equation, with a complex curved steel structure to support the 1604 panels required to deliver the full effect,” he says. “This prime central city location was chosen for Te Pae Christchurch because it’s on the doorstep of some of the best dining, shopping and accommodation Christchurch has to offer. It also ensured we did all we could to deliver a facility befitting this prominent riverside site and the significant buildings surrounding it.” Woods Bagot Principal and design leader Bruno Mendes says seeing Te Pae Christchurch come alive makes it worth all the effort. “The design is for a fluid and undulating facade that responds to the cultural narrative of the local iwi and the Avon River flowing through the city.” Advising on Ngāi Tūāhuriri/Ngāi Tahu values and narratives, the Matapopore Charitable Trust was fully

embedded in the design process, which Mendes said refined and reinforced the ‘braided rivers’ concept which started as an early idea. “Principles of the unique Canterbury landscape are captured in the materiality. There are five varied tones of grey and different surface textures in the facade composition,” Bruno said. “The panel colours build on the interplay of shades and the characteristics of a ‘living surface’.” Matapopore Chairperson, Aroha Reriti-Crofts, says the concept for the facade is aligned with ki uta ki tai (from the mountains to the sea). “The term relates to the the movement of water through the landscape and the numerous interactions it may have on its journey. Ki uta ki tai recognises the interconnected nature of people, land and water. This concept also has a strong connection with both mahinga kai and whakapapa, which are two of the kaupapa that are being embedded into the Anchor Projects.” The facade cladding is in fibre cement tiles, which are produced using mineral base materials. The tiles will last for more than 50 years and are fully recyclable. Fibre cement production has 90 percent less greenhouse potential than aluminium sheeting.

Let’s talk design & build If great leadership is defined by vision, passion and enjoying challenges, then David Magill Builders is led by one of the best.

O

wner Craig Freeman has risen to the top of his game through service to the New Zealand Defence Force, as an apprentice then as a Licenced Building Practitioner working for David Magill himself. David’s retirement in 2016 opened the door for Craig to purchase the company. “Over the years, I saw the respect granted to David Magill by his peers. I resolved to achieve the same,” Craig says. “I quickly realised that central to winning and retaining respect is placing the highest premiums on integrity, transparency and your word. I want to combine the traditions and values that have made the David Magill brand solid for 35 years and bring my own future vision to the table.” At David Magill Builders, the ‘win point’ of any build is never at the signing of the

initial client agreement, but rather at the end of the build experience itself. “What we do at David Magill is we patiently listen and value our client’s opinion, and place a great emphasis on thought before action. Through careful listening we are able to translate a sometimes amorphous description into the finished product they envisaged.” Thriving on challenging projects and great at problem solving, the company doesn’t operate from a template. The approach is always openness to the client and to the project, as well as great flexibility. “We’ve found that no build is the same and we have never built the same house twice,” Craig says. “The success of the David Magill name is a result of a tightly knit team of people and an outer circle of trusted trades, some

of which have remained loyal for two generations and align with our values.” The variety and scope of work undertaken does not just end at residential but boasts a portfolio of multi-level apartment blocks, office space, preschools, light commercial to lifestyle semi-attached living. Excelling at working with passionate homeowners on unique homes, the design and build of an art deco home in Perth Street has been a special project for Craig. The company stepped in after the owner and existing builder had hit a stalemate; the owner low in spirit. Always valuing transparency, Craig asked the builders if David Magill Builders could take over and this little jewel of a property was on its way to polished perfection. A series of adjustments led to the design achieving consent and a quick turnaround of the whole project led to an excited owner and a fabulous house. “The project is memorable as a series of small victories. We listened to the client, won his trust and resolved all the conflicts.” With art deco homes becoming scarce, it was vital to retain the unique features, feel and character but utilising modern building techniques, creative thinking and design innovation. Clever fibreglass roofing fits the representative curves of the facade. And Perth Street is just one of many dreams realised, built by the man with his feet firmly on the ground. www.davidmagill.co.nz

ENGINEERING AND BUILDING SERVICES TO

FOUNDATIONS OF A GOOD HOME

Your home is your castle, but it’s a faulty fortress if the foundations are not solid. Precision Solutions is the expert in levelling every type and age of home, on every foundation. Offering a free assessment of your home, the Precision Solutions team then collaborates with a select team of builders and project manages all the way from paperwork, to a levelled, repaired and finished home.

“T

his is exactly the moment to give us a call to get your earthquake repairs completed once and for all,” Contracts Manager Charles Porter says. In August last year, the government announced a $300m policy for homeowners of over-cap on-sold properties in Canterbury to apply for an ex gratia government payment to have their homes repaired. You can also apply for the payment if you still own your home but believe the repairs done post-earthquakes were not satisfactory, or overlooked leveling. Details and registration are available at www.eqc. govt.nz, but you must register by 12 August, 2020. Managing the paperwork with EQC can form a significant part of the project and Charles will work with you on this every step of the way. Working remotely is no problem. “We’ve releveled a home in Beatty Street for an owner based in Australia and another in Switzerland.” The team relevels around 40 homes per year. “We love what we do – building relationships with clients. It is great to be able to help someone who might have been really struggling to get where they need to be. “We feel a real satisfaction looking at the finished project knowing that our client can now move on with their life.”

Have you purchased an Earthquake repaired property? Have you checked the foundations and floor levels? Do you think you might have problems? Call us for a free initial assessment before it’s too late. You can also download a free copy of our guide from our website.

THE CITY’S HOT SALT WATER POOLS ARE SOON TO BE OPEN

hristchurch residents and visitors will soon be making the most of New Brighton’s revitalised foreshore with the much-anticipated opening of He Puna Taimoana, the New Brighton hot pools. The hot pools are part of the wider regeneration of New Brighton, led by Development Christchurch Limited (DCL) on behalf of the Christchurch City Council. The work includes exciting public projects which are transforming the foreshore, along with a focus on the business centre and surrounding area. Apollo Projects ensured the vision became a reality, completing the hot pools project in less than 12 months. “The complex has five pools, a cold-water plunge pool, steam and sauna rooms, changing and toilet facilities, naturally-lit reception and café areas and first aid and staff facilities,” Project Manager Keeva Irving says. “The landscaping, both internal and external, has been designed to bring harmony to the complex and provide a user-friendly yet robust space.” The pools are all different sizes and shapes, and range in temperature from 120C to 400C. Apollo Projects became involved

at the tender stage. Chosen as the preferred contractor, the team worked with DCL using value engineering to reduce costs and enhance the project’s buildability. With a tight site, sandy substrate and exposure to weather, the team programmed the build into phases to best manage the issues and then co-ordinated the planning with all the sub-contractors. The marine environment meant DCL’s design team had to carefully select functional and durable materials. The Apollo team’s success is down to carefully planning every detail, along with regular and effective communication with all parties, especially DCL and Architect Andrew Watson. Apollo Construction has worked with Christchurch City Council on a number of other successful builds, including Normal Kirk Pool, Scarborough Splash Pad and the award-winning Taiora: QEII Sport & Recreation Centre, and the company hopes to work with the council on future projects. “We think the hot pools will be a valuable asset to the New Brighton community and represent an important role in the overall regeneration of the area,” Keeva says.

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY FIRTH

EMBRACING DIGITAL DESIGN PRACTICE BY WSP ARCHITECTURAL GRADUATE DANIEL CROOKS

From small scale pavilion installations to large multi-unit developments, digital design technologies are radically shaping new avenues of design in architecture.

I

magine being able to seamlessly collaborate between designers, clients, iwis, artists, consultants, and the council; produce designs

without having to ‘draw’ a single line; undertake multiple design explorations in a fraction of the time of conventional methods; optimise material

usage; minimise project waste and cost; and immerse yourself virtually in the design from concept to completion. These are just a few of the real-world applications of digital design technologies available to designers today and this is just the tip of the iceberg. By utilising digital design technologies in partnership with digital-led fabrication methods, we will start to see

a challenge of the status quo on a commercial scale. Instead of mass production we will see mass customisation, a process of file to fabrication, a reduction of time it takes to construct a building and a reduction of misinterpretations between those involved. I believe that applying these digital technologies balances the ever-increasing demands of the built environment and produces refined architectural outcomes. Be it a house extension or a new multi-unit development, why not take advantage of all the tools at hand and create something truly rewarding with a tailored fit?

Today the twostorey brick and half-timbered home’s extensive ornate plaster ceilings, Italian marble fireplaces, leadlights and panelling are proudly in place. “We don’t often get to build these and were delighted that the owner opted to rebuild, to illustrate our skills,” Steve says. Forty-five years’ experience gives Steve a rare depth of knowledge about specialised builds, giving his team a huge advantage. “In those days we did everything without the benefit of the specialist trades that now come in. I like to think that our apprentices gain the ability to do all the work if required, and are highly skilled in most areas when they become qualified,” Steve says. “You can see the craft in the homes we build.”

COLLABORATIVE LUXURY By Rhonda Mitchell

CoLab Architecture proved itself the superlative choice to design the three luxury homes on the stunning site vacated by historic Parkdale. CoLab Director Tobin Smith designed styles complementary to the outcomes the developers sought for this very distinct niche and, as the name over the door suggests, collaborative work is a specialty.

T

he Heaton street frontage forms part of the city’s character assessment area. Tobin wanted to keep the scale of the original homes in the area but not replicate them. “CoLab is creating a new heritage that we hope will still be celebrated in 100 years’ time,” Tobin says. “We have a style that is

becoming recognisable and you can see it particularly in the rear house with its strong gable forms that are part of the illustrious Christchurch school of architecture. Brick cladding honours the original homestead, it is soft and in keeping with the area.” Each home is distinct:

A STAND-OUT

Hallmark Homes invites you to visit their outstanding new show home at Te Whāriki. Co-Director of Hallmark Homes Mike Bonne says that, while this home is built to executive standard for the homeowner ready for the finer things in life, the company can vary all its plans to suit your needs and budget.

P

resenting an airy room-to-breathe 2.55 metre stud, the home has four bedrooms with two living areas. The whole home is ‘smart’, with lights, curtains and blinds, doors and the garage door able to be controlled remotely by voice activation. With interior design plus exterior colours and tile selection by Sandalwood Design, the icing on this very desirable cake is provided by the al fresco room, which could easily be classed as the third living area. Temperature, moisture, shade and air movement are all yours to control in this entertainment or personal escape space. At 40 square metres, this amazing room features a raking ceiling, three solar controlled Velux skylights, a full outdoor kitchen with rangehood and fridge, television, speakers, outdoor heating and barbeque.

Sliding stacker doors retract into the wall, opening onto the private garden with a water feature and green wall. “The al fresco room is next level,” Mike says. “It’s a standout; a real favourite for me.” The entrance is lined with cedar sarking and beamed with dummy rafting. Lighting is provided by designer LED fittings. In the lounge, a cathedral ceiling framed by a large picture window provides plenty of light. A metallic charcoal Venetian plaster wall with gold flecks along with a frameless Rinnai fire create ambience together with the extensive LED lighting. Drama is created by a vaulted ceiling, found in the open plan dining and family room, and wellbeing is enhanced by a built in TV cabinet and circular timber shelving on a Resene Fuscous Grey backdrop, which certainly makes a statement.

The oversized Caesarstone kitchen bench runs to 6.5 metres, hosting twin sinks, a pair of Bosch ovens and a scullery with plenty of shelving hidden but easily accessible, while a study recess spells productivity combined with easy access to refreshments. The master bedroom is a palette of soft neutrals and earthy tones combined with a bespoke Nordic pine geometric headboard dimly lit with LEDs, creating a cosy and restful atmosphere to unwind. An elegant freestanding bath elevated on a plinth and flanked by Italian feature tiles is positioned beneath two Velux windows, allowing for stargazing while you soak. Outside, 100 square metres of decking meets a fully planted and irrigated garden. “It represents our commitment to excellence,” Mike says.

THE FINER DETAILS

T

he old adage ‘take your job seriously but not yourself’ finds its true expression with Fiona Renton, Director and Senior Interior Designer at Sandalwood Design, who was responsible for the interior design of the Hallmark Homes showhome. Gifted with a discerning eye for finesse and detail, Fiona has the ability to visualise a finished room, right from the early planning stages. Collaborating alongside Fiona on your interiors is a process you’ll not only love but also have fun with. Warmth, irreverent wit and enthusiasm are joined by her passion to create an extraordinary haven – a haven that you can’t wait to come home to.

Fiona was heavily involved in the design of both the exterior and interior of the Hallmark Homes showhome – choosing the colour for the linea along with the large scale Interno Exterior tiles in silver, used as a feature element of the cladding. Linking the exterior to the interior is the sodesirable al fresco room. This is the fourth showhome collaboration between Sandalwood Design and Hallmark Homes. After many years working together Fiona refuses to become staid; instead she relentlessly embarks on finding new and inspiring design features to set each home apart, the Te Whāriki showhome is no exception. The kitchen features a benchtop in Caesarstone Turbine Grey, matched with cabinetry in Bestwood Dapper Grey Velvet finish, and Prime Melamine Frost Grey Velvet Finish. Porcelanosa Park Lineal Acero tiles clad the end of the island. Irresistibly touchable textural layers are a feature of Fiona’s work and find their expression in the Venetian plaster wall, timber floating

shelves, and beautiful greenery throughout. The proud owner of Sandalwood Design for the past 12 years, Fiona enjoys every aspect of her work “I love it all, meeting with clients, the design, sourcing productevery day is different and that is a great thing.” With everything covered from initial concept plans through to final finishing touches, Fiona and in-house designer Sam Munro meet with clients, build a rapport, explore how the client’s household works and what they are looking for. From there they evolve a style that is best suited to the client, achieving a welcoming and harmonious space. Fiona believes a design should have innate longevity, and will often have roots in a classic look. Natural fibres allow her to bring in the textural feel that she loves, and layers bring the richness to the room. “I love to see what I can create, get into the thick of it while the project evolves, and then finally put it altogether to give my clients an amazing space.” www.sandalwooddesign.co.nz

A MODERN TREASURE A modern treasure of innovative solid construction and historical reminders provides the ultimate central apartment lifestyle.

T

head-turner. The standard is high-end for all 34 units built by Street and Cook Construction. Each one, a future-proofed investment. The first residents moved into the main building this month and now just five of the sought-after apartments remain for sale.

The drive-through entrance is via a portico under the project’s first stage, The Gatehouse, which is home to four exclusive apartments. The 20 residents’ outdoor carparks are secured behind the central automatic security gate. The ground-floor brick façade

retains timeless character, melding with history – namely the old brick Orion substation. It still stands as a grand feature point between the gatehouse and the main building – a nod to Christchurch’s past. Director John Street of Street and Cook Construction

has run an outstanding operation from Taranaki for over 35 years. This is his second noteworthy development in Christchurch, which includes the award-winning GCH Aviation Centre. Site foreman Brad Shotter moved his family down to Christchurch to project manage each exciting development. “The apartments are very cleverly designed, to fit the relatively tight space we had to work with,” Brad says. “Each one has its own unique view. All the balconies and courtyards are generously sized and most face north. The Hebel exterior is extra thick at 75 millimetres and provides a high acoustic rating and thermal barrier.” The four floors and penthouse of the main building are of classic black and white exterior. Fresh and light, neutral décor throughout connects the inside the 30 apartments to the spacious common areas. The one and two bedroom apartments, are all generously proportioned and include Bosch appliances. Strict acoustic tolerances mitigate the usual sounds from a bourgeoning CBD. Solid Kwila treads and rises create the wide stairwell, provide an alternative to the internal elevator. Brad says the project was a real pleasure to work on. It was almost like clockwork for the 18-month project that was completed on schedule. “The build is up there with the best in innovation. BRB patented-design seismicstrength structural steel from America makes it a standout construction by John Jones Steel. The extremely solid foundation included 73 screw piles, some as deep as 14 metres, supplied and installed by Smith Cranes and Construction. These subcontractors were an integral part of this successful project.” Cobalt Electrical and Security Systems provided the very latest requirements. The appointment of Weir Architecture to transform the Hereford Street office block that once housed Scorpio books into a stylish boutique hotel, assures Christchurch of a delicious treat to be sampled in around 18 months. National Award Architectural winner in 2019 for The Crown Plaza Christchurch project, Weir Architecture has stunning plans for the building which forms part of the Hilton Tapestry group.

trengthened, remodelled and with a top floor added, the hotel will be named The Modern. Destined to become one of the city’s treasures, it will feature a retro interior – a fabulous take on the 1960’s modern era of interiors. Robert Weir, Director of Weir Architecture says the company sought something completely unique to Christchurch and realised the proponents of art, architecture, furniture and interior design of the 1960s in Christchurch should be celebrated. Inspired by local artists’ works stored at COCA, as well as local titans Miles Warren and Peter Beaven, plus international architecture stars of the 60s, the furniture and artworks will be authentic. The theme dictates the colour palette, the use of timber, leather, carpeting, and wall finishes in panelling and wallpaper. Robert is lead consultant, working with developer Tailorspace and the hotel will be operated by the Sarin Group. Hosting 70 rooms, the ground floor restaurant and café bar will be operated by the hotel, and we can look forward to a visit in 18 months. “It’s really exciting to be working on this sophisticated hotel redevelopment and it’s always wonderful to work with a strong brand such as Hilton,” Robert says. www.weirarchtecture.nz

There is nothing so gripping as a mystery slowly revealed and that is what you get with this surprising and smart Marama Crescent home, designed by Ben Brady of Linetype Architecture and built by Dean Harrison from H3 Builders.

A

t street level, the observer sees the garage and entry way, angular and facetted in stack bond concrete block. Those who make it across the threshold then see the home expand into the courtyard downstairs, with a stimulating range of spaces and orientations. The sloping site generated three levels: entry, down to main living and master bedroom, down to two further bedrooms on the lowest level. Extensive glazing provides sight-lines through the building to capture views of the city around to the Kaikoura Ranges, from that vantage. Large windows frame the vistas from each room while clerestory glazing above the living room captures light. With easy care in mind, the owners sought low maintenance and solidity, choosing cladding in powder coated aluminium in Bronco and Canvas Cloth, with colourfast timber composite Innowood. They also briefed a concrete floor to provide solidity, building performance and heat, but this required a robust structure involving plenty of steel with panels underneath, designed by Ben. “There are almost as many structural drawings as

architectural drawings for the house,” he says. Connected yet separate spaces are a feature, as is a blurred concept of inside and out. Concrete block is used inside as interior pillars, and an off-form concrete beam plus the courtyard extend in to support the toplevel landing. Vaulted stagger patterned poplar plywood ceiling, in the living areas connect them to the upper level. Ben found Dean impressive to work with. “He needed very few calls to get his head around the structure. He is so enthusiastic, with high standards and close attention paid to sequencing.” Dean says, “We loved the build complexity: angles, three-storeys and the sheer variety of elements, which included exposed insitu concrete beams, honed concrete blocks, pre-finished cladding and timber ceiling.” Hands-on every day from shovelling mud, to project management, Dean loves the challenge of a hill site. “Ben’s plans were great and he is easy to work with: always ready to discuss ideas and solutions. The enjoyable challenge created a really great house.” www.linetype.co.nz | www.h3builders.co.nz

SECLUDED BEAUTY

An iconic build, which also blends naturally into the secluded Banks Peninsula site, was the creative challenge presented to award-winning Architect Tim Nees.

“T

he brief was for an informal weekend retreat, to eventually become their retirement home,” he says. “It was designed not only for the look, but to take advantage of water views and hillside vistas on each side, while letting in light and breezes.” Self-sustaining and completely off the grid, with two water-collection tanks, the surrounding four hectares was once part of an old farm. “It has been left by the clients to ‘rewild’ itself,” says Tim, who recently designed his own unique seaside escape. “The clients were really happy, saying it was like a work of art – and beyond beautiful! It almost feels like an architectural tramping hut to me.” The saw-tooth roof, painted heritage red, has its highest points facing the east to catch the morning sun. Two bedrooms on either end and a cosy nook up a few steps surround the open-plan high-stud living areas. A purposeful mix of non-treated timber features throughout the 172 square metre interior including exposed beams of macrocarpa and Douglas fir, a well-oiled plywood floor

and walls lined with birch plywood. A solid-timber kitchen bench top was sourced by the clients. The deck of purple heart, like the larch cladding, was left to silver over time. “Huntley Quinn was our builder,” Tim says. “He was exceptional at thinking through the challenging strategy of working in a remote location, and very organised and honest. The communication was great, which was very important.” The award-winning construction firm hired a bach about 15 minutes away, where his crew of six stay during the week. As a secondgeneration builder and Project Manager for 29 years, Huntley also spent a day or two each week on the tools. Completed last year, Huntley says it was quite a technical build with a lot of joinery, complex roof and an elevated subfloor. “Logistically it was a challenge, but enjoyable and rewarding – especially with building through all four seasons, from scorching heat to snow. We achieved the right balance of design to budget through a very close collaboration between architect, builder and client.”

Got Any Time? Time. Have you got any? It’s the elephant in everybody’s room. “I haven’t got enough time.” How often do we hear that and, even more, how often do we say it to ourselves? I’ve been a party to that personal conversation even though I try to be meticulous about punctuality and prioritizing, and I find it’s a massive issue with some of the people I meet. Having started into a new year – a new decade, in fact – it’s a great opportunity to look at how we can utilize that precious 24 hours a day to get the best out of ourselves and our lives. Here’s what provides me with both comfort and sanity. 1. Be organized/structured/prepared. It’s very easy to spot someone who hasn’t done the preparation. Someone who made it harder for themselves by not investing time in setting up their diary, confirming appointments, checking in on personal or family commitments, basically doing everything they could to provide a gentle entry into a task or a week without the stress of having to overcompensate and then waste time. Every Sunday, I prepare for the week,

month and year ahead. I’ve done this for decades and it creates a steady flow of activity and creativity, while minimizing time wasted. I feel calm, no matter the gravity or magnitude of what lies ahead, and that is a godsend! 2. Delegate. Something that’s easier said than done, but some tasks are simply better performed by others (anything to do with the car or filling in questionnaires for me!). Work out what those tasks are and you’ll have time left over for the things that truly matter. 3. Say ‘no’. It sounds easy, but just as some people can’t say ‘yes’ to anything, others can’t say ‘no’. You can tie yourself up in knots trying to do for others what they might never do for you. Why? Because we feel bad? Well, time to start practicing the ‘no’. Many of us have children who made an art form of this simple response. Learn from them. Give your time to the people and causes that matter. 4. Limit distractions. Sometimes it feels like so many things are calling for our attention. Coupled with this is the online world, which can dominate so much of

the lives people lead. Everyone wants to know something immediately or be helped instantly – of course, this could just be part of the business world or the life you live, however be aware of digital distractions that have little merit and consume lots of time. This includes digital games or endless online shopping which can easily go from a distraction to an addiction. After using some of these strategies for yourself, I’d love to wish you the time to focus on things that resonate with you at a deep and meaningful level. I’d also like to thank you for taking the time to read this and to wish you well as we pass from February into March. No matter how many techniques I utilize, this particular month is always madness, and anyone working to a March 31st end of financial year will know why!
