he proverb above has long been a favourite of mine, despite a complete inability to harness the wisdom within it. It’s been something I’ve been reflecting on during some trying times recently. All first world problems of course. And when I break down every single one of those difficulties, it’s not hard to see that every single one of them is a good problem to have. There are things that we all take for granted — things that have become ‘givens’ within our day-to-day lives. Whether it’s the roof over our heads, the food on our plates or the clothes on our backs, they’re there and we always expect those things to be there. But for so many, they’re not there; many lack the basic necessities of food, water and shelter. Our unbridled access to these things makes it easy for us to get caught up with what we don’t have and not appreciating what we do have. ABC AUDITED Which is where gratitude comes in. There is a growing body of research which shows the psychological benefits of being grateful, including feeling happier and lowering stress, depression and anxiety. It’s also contagious… when you feel that good, you make others around you feel good too! So let’s make 2020 the yearAUDITED of appreciation, after all, only good things can come of it. And just remember, if you’re crying over spilt milk, be thankful you’ve got milk to cry over.

You’ve been a fan of MAC Cosmetics’ iconic Ruby Woo lipstick since you first purchased it at 15… now you’re the face of their latest campaign. How exciting is that? I was honoured to be a New Zealander on a New Zealand campaign. I love MAC and we have a great relationship so was excited to be the face of the campaign. What do you love about a bold red lippy? Any lippy makes you feel like a real woman. Last year was pretty epic for you, being tasked with helping create Rihanna’s show at New York Fashion Week, you were named as New Zealand’s entertainment and cultural curator for Expo 2020 in Dubai, and you were personally recruited by Jennifer Lopez to choreograph her highly anticipated Super Bowl halftime show before being recognised in the 2020 New Year Honours list for services to dance. What does 2020 have in store for you? I have just signed with IMG New York so will be doing a lot more work in fashion. Lots of work with various artists on their events throughout the year. The big project for me is starting to work on my movie Murder On The Dance Floor which is very exciting and going to take most of 2020. It was back in 2012, when a YouTube clip of you caught J.Lo’s eye, resulting in her asking you to choreograph for her world tour. Not many people can say J.Lo was their first real boss… How incredible was it to get to reconnect with her for her Super Bowl halftime show? It felt like the world had spun 360° to be able to work with her on such a big moment in her career. She is such a professional and works hard to put the best show on she can. We get on so well and she trusts me and loves what I create. It was a highlight to be back working with her again.
How important is it for you to be a role model for young women to be courageous, empowered, independent and to grab life by the lapels? It is very important to me to instil self confidence in all young women. Being Polynesian, having curly hair and being curvy growing up meant I didn’t have role models to look up to in mainstream media. I want all young women to know they are all individually beautiful and can achieve anything in life if they set their mind to it. Along with my two sisters we have created Sisters United which is all about empowering our young women, www.sistersunited.co.nz. What was it that first attracted you to dancing and choreography? It’s all I remember doing as a young child. I was brought up with music playing all the time and I love to dance. It was my destiny. What’s the best part about what you get to do? I get to do something I love to do each day. When someone gets big, from the outside it looks like overnight success. How much time, passion, hard work and sheer determination went in behind the scenes? Overnight success takes 10 years. I worked non-stop from the age of 17 years old and sacrificed so much to get to where I am today. Nothing comes easy and you have to be willing to work hard, be passionate and be focused to achieve your goals. What would your biggest piece of advice be to someone who wants to take themselves to the next level, whether it is professionally or personally? Be you – to be unique and be true to yourself. There is only one of each of us on this planet so don’t follow the crowd and just be you.

Your list of accolades and accomplishments is growing by the month. What do you personally consider to be some of your career highlights? Definitely opening my own studio ‘The Palace’. We have had hundreds and hundreds of dancers come through our doors to be able to tour the world, dance for global superstars and enjoy a life through dance. Doing 13 videos for Justin Bieber’s Purpose album was such a big challenge and it pushed me creatively and physically with the short time frame to shoot all the videos in. Sorry made such an impact around the world. Working with Rihanna is always special. What we created for her SAVAGE X FENTY show in New York was special and such a statement for all women around the world and talked about self-love and believing in yourself.

OPEN DAY & SMC BOARDERS’ SLEEPOVER SMC BOARDERS’ SLEEPOVER:
Keep the faith It’s been 10 years since Faith No More last hit New Zealand, but that’s about to change with the five-piece Californian rock band set to head down south in May.
B
assist Bill Gould says the band – which is performing just seven arena shows across New Zealand and Australia – is well overdue for a proper Kiwi tour. “Faith No More has taken many twists and turns over the years, and both Australia and New Zealand have been with us every step of the way; this is something that we have always appreciated,” Bill says. “Nevertheless, we realise that it’s been 20 years since our last proper tour there. If we wait another 20, we’ll be in our 70s!” Faith No More will kick off the New Zealand leg of their tour at Spark Arena in Auckland on 8 May, before performing at Horncastle Arena on Sunday, 10 May. Faith No More’s pioneering, genredefining career saw the band morph from cult underground heroes to boundarypushing global chart-toppers, mixing metal to alt-rock to hip-hop to punk and much more, with hits such as Epic, Falling to Pieces, Ashes to Ashes, Easy, Midlife Crisis and Sunny Side Up.
The band is made up of Mike Bordin (drums), Roddy Bottum (keyboards), Billy Gould (bass), Jon Hudson (guitar) and Mike Patton (vocals). They have released seven studio albums to date: We Care A Lot (1985), Introduce Yourself (1987), The Real Thing (1989), Angel Dust (1992), King For A Day… Fool For A Lifetime (1995), Album of the Year (1997) and Sol Invictus (2015). Also performing at all shows is Melbourne band RVG, who’ll return in 2020 with the follow-up to the band’s critically acclaimed 2017 debut, A Quality of Mercy. Lending their support following Australia’s bushfire crisis, Faith No More will be donating $1 (plus GST) from each ticket sold across the AU/NZ dates to Animals Australia, and state fire services in affected areas, including NSW Rural Fire Service, Country Fire Association VIC, SA Country Fire Service, Rural Fire Brigades Association QLD.

estate as PA to her agent husband. “I was thrown in at the deep end, but found I loved the environment. That gave me the confidence to become an agent myself in 1991. It was a job I could do while balancing my role as a mother of two small children.” During her journey of nearly 30 years in the business, Alison has proved she has the attributes required to win her clients’ trust. “I’ve been lucky to have been asked to sell properties for more than one generation of families. I think perhaps I might be doing something right. I certainly do put 100 percent into my work. It is not a part-time business.” Alison also truly loves running open homes and seeing and talking to so many people she knows. “My experience has taught me that although every client and every property is different, everyone deserves to be treated with respect, consistency and care. My greatest joy is the people I work with.”

A positive grooming experience Dropping your precious baby off for a groom can be stressful. After all, having our hair done is a very personal experience, whether it’s for us or our precious pup. Wigram Vet and the Good Dog Spa is a relatively new dog-centric business with a holistic approach to its doggy clients’ wellbeing.
E

and after their groom, our dogs get to hang out in the room with us in a very relaxed atmosphere. Dougal, my elderly maltese cross, comes to work with me each day. He is the perfect chaperone for nervous newbies, he is so gentle and welcoming. I strongly believe a puppy’s first grooming encounter must be a kind and positive one so that they learn to enjoy being groomed.” Buffie brings Max (pictured) to The Good Dog Spa regularly. “All the staff are welcoming and Max enjoys coming to see Emma, which is important as Max is getting on now.” The Good Dog Spa has recently expanded its grooming hours to include Saturdays and late-night Wednesdays. “My sister Amy is a well-known local groomer whom I’ve managed to entice to come and work with me,” Emma says. “We get on great and her experience enhances our skills with large dogs.”
The Good Dog Spa offers a range of doggy delights. The daycare is small and boutique with a focus on small dogs, and offers short stays of up to two or three days. Many grooming clients choose to use daycare as an option when their dogs are groomed to allow flexibility for drop off and pick up. Another feature of the Good Dog Spa is canine rehab with underwater treadmill and massage from in-house canine rehab practitioner Kate Donald. “We see many elderly golden retrievers and longhaired arctic breeds that love to have an underwater treadmill session to maintain mobility before heading to the groomer for a shampoo and blow dry. Clients love the flexibility and convenience of having all these services under one roof.” Find Wigram Vet and the Good Dog Spa, at 155 Corsair Drive, Wigram. Trek in a Trillian By Céline Gibson
Trillian Trek has been fundraising for New Zealand children for more than a quarter of a century and raised more than $11 million.
K
nown for 26 years as Variety Bash, the charity raises money for disadvantaged children to provide them with the means to secure a better life – be it liberty swings, bikes, mobility projects, insulin pumps, or mentors to encourage them in their life goals. This year marks Trillian Trek’s 30th anniversary. The fun begins with its annual non-competitive car rally beginning 15 March at Timaru and continuing on to Dunedin, Invercargill, Wanaka, Hokitika, Picton, Wanganui, ending 21 March at Waireka Resort. Throughout the journey, Kiwi kids get to meet the trekkers and get
up to all kinds of fun, games and madcap mayhem. In 2017, some Canterbury trekkers formed a team (currently the only Trillian Trek in the South Island) and got their own fire truck, Wai Wakanui, which roughly translates into the ‘Big Water Truck’. Wai Wakanui will be joined in the 2020 rally by Te Waka Haumi, a stretch Cadillac. The Canterbury trekkers have been thrilled with the support received from huge-hearted local businesses. Christchurch policeman, Dougall Struthers, first became involved with Trillian Trek in 2000. “It was sold to me as

a week-long party – I lasted three days!” Dougall said of his first rally that although he returned home feeling exhausted, he also knew that he had found something he wanted to do. “Sure, we’d have great fun along the way at night functions, but it was the special moments during school visits when you experience the smile from a kid struggling with life, knowing that you’ve helped them, that pulls you back.” They are kids like Mark Wilson, now 25-years-old, who was born with cerebral palsy and whose parents were told he would never walk or talk. At 13
months, Mark began an intense therapy programme and, by six years of age, was walking and talking. It was a Trillian Trek scholarship that saw Mark not only representing New Zealand in the Paralympics Development Squad in athletics and table tennis, but also receiving a mentor who provided ongoing support and encouragement. “The Trillian Trek family passed no judgement and
encouraged me to be myself. I gained more confidence, helping me to overcome the bullying I was experiencing at school.” Mark graduated from Waikato University with a degree in business management in 2017 and now works for a leading finance company. He loves being an ambassador for Trillian Trek and will be taking part in this year’s rally – his tenth – with his own team and fire truck.
Trillion Trek Event Director, Murray O’Donnell, says the strong partnerships forged with sponsors, such as the New Zealand Air Force, AA, and Bluebridge Ferries, to name but a few, is what keeps Trillian Trek trekking. Alongside these altruistic sponsors are the amazing 134 volunteers, like Dougall and Mark, who donate one week of their lives every year to help bring joy and hope to our kids. www.trekevents.co.nz

JAYOFF THE CUFF
By Melinda Collins
You can tell a natural-born performer by how an interview request is met; the plan-
ahead type introverts want emailed questions, sometimes even to answer via email. Jay-Jay Feeney, on the other hand, is completely comfortable with ‘off the cuff’; live radio Monday to Friday will do that to you. So too will a life in the limelight.
I
t’s a life the 91 MORE FM host has craved since the age of nine. “I used to listen to the radio as a kid and just loved it! I had absolutely no idea how to actually get on the radio,” she laughs. “But I would spend hours making my own radio shows at home.” It was at the age of 15 when the dream began to materialise in the form of work experience at New Plymouth’s Energy FM. This would be the time in the story to add, ‘and the rest is history’, but then that would seriously sell short the incredible career Jay-Jay has been able to craft
for herself – one that has seen her meet Pink five times, hang out with Tom Cruise in his personal trailer and get awarded for her Outstanding Contribution to Radio at the Radio Awards in 2018 (even if she was in the toilet when her name was called!), to name just a few of her professional accomplishments. But it’s the station’s annual Jingle Bail – which saw her and co-host Flynny locked up in a 5x5m ‘jail cell’ for five days – that she is most proud of; an annual pilgrimage which raised $158,661 for Koru Care NZ and sent 39 Kiwi kids on a plane to

the Gold Coast in its 2019 incarnation. “It’s such a fun week; exhausting as hell, but so rewarding!” Open and honest by nature, Jay-Jay’s always found it easy to talk – even about the difficult stuff. “I love connecting with people,” she says. “We’re so lucky in radio that we get to do that, more so than any other medium. That’s why I do it, whether I make someone laugh, cry or just relate!” Over the years she’s shared the love (former co-host Dom Harvey), the heartache (their infertility
out & about
-JAY y e n Fee struggles) and the pain (their marriage break up and her mental health struggles); you could say she wrote the book on it – which she did in 2013 with Misconception, about her battle for a baby. “It was real, it was honest, I knew only people who needed it would read it, so it wasn’t for a mass audience,” she says. But it also came with its pitfalls. “Once you do talk about something like that, you do become the poster person for it and that’s quite draining; the same happened with talking about depression. People will say ‘thanks so much for talking about it and opening up’ but then they want to tell me their heart-breaking stories and ask what they should do. “I’m not the expert; I’ll share my story, but I can’t help you work out what to do.” She’s sharing the love again, this time with her off-shore Algerian beau, Minou, who she has spent a summer of love with, travelling the length and breadth of the country. “It’s been really cool travelling around New
Zealand and seeing the country through a tourist’s eye,” says Jay-Jay, who admits she hasn’t seen as much of her own country before – like many of us! “Everyone needs a foreigner to visit,” she laughs. The couple checked out Te Anau and the Milford Sounds; they experienced the Māori culture at Te Puia in Rotorua; they went jetboating in Taupo; then there was kayaking, glow worms and hotpools in the mix. “The hardest part is he gets four weeks of holidays a year – and he’s just used them! So he can’t go anywhere.” So she’s applying for a visa to head to Algeria herself in the next couple of months and while she’s confident her boss will give her two weeks, she’s going to beg him for three! In the meantime, she’s planning on working hard and looking after herself. “Those three things will make me very happy – having a great time with work, looking after my mental health and love!”

The musical of all musicals! Showbiz Christchurch is set to raise the curtain on its first show for 2020, a stunning new production of the stage show described as the “musical of all musicals” My Fair Lady.
B
ased on George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion, My Fair Lady is that rare musical by which all others are measured. Pompous linguistics professor Henry Higgins wagers he can transform Eliza Doolittle (played originally by Julie Andrews and Audrey Hepburn), a street-smart girl from the East End gutters, into a proper Edwardian society lady. But as audiences get to meet the feisty, independent and entrepreneurial Eliza, the question becomes ‘who is really undergoing the transformation here?’ My Fair Lady is set in 1912, and as Marketing Manager Wendy Riley explains, it was a time of massive social and class upheaval in England. “There was the first national coal mining strike that year, followed by strikes from the dockworkers

and tailors. Scabs were taking work from families already impoverished by the strikes, while many of the upper and lower classes, keen to get away from it all, boarded the Titanic for her maiden voyage to New York.” It was also a time of change for women. The Suffragettes were throwing themselves before carriages and chaining themselves to railings, determined to cast off the shackles of post-Victorianism and its attitude towards women. When thinking of a young woman such as Eliza Doolittle trying to forge a life for herself in those somewhat turbulent times, it’s easy to understand why she was determined to have her own flower shop and thereby move out of lower-class squalor. It also explains why Eliza’s
story has been retold so many times in films like Pretty Woman, Educating Rita, Weird Science, Mannequin, She’s All That, and even crossing into Science Fiction in the 2014 film Ex Machina. Eliza’s story is timeless. Christchurch-based,
international performer Kira Josephson (Wicked, Les Misérables) has always dreamed of playing Eliza, a show she knew as a child growing up in Laguna Beach, California. Kira feels the show has strong relevance to today’s
out & about value, but figuring out the tools for you to get people to understand who you are. The show isn’t about Eliza changing – she’s the same person – but what’s beautiful about it is that, by the end, it’s Higgins we see change, but it’s too little, too late.” Working with musical director Richard Marrett has been a brilliant experience for Kira. “His ear is incredible – not like anybody else’s. The score is amazing – it’s lush and wonderful. They just don’t write harmonies like that anymore. We have a huge ensemble and, already, everyone sounds just fabulous.” Directed by Stephen Robertson, the principal cast of My Fair Lady features Roy Snow (Shortland Street, Outrageous Fortune, Go Girls) as Henry Higgins, Peter Hind as Colonel Pickering, and James Foster and Ian Lester as Freddy Eynsford-Hill and Alfred Doolittle respectively. young people because of its emphasis on class distinctions and education. Higgins gives Eliza the tools to improve herself and her situation. Eliza uses education to find herself. “It’s really a story about carving your own way – not being judged, not being taken at face
Roy Snow as Henry Higgins.
Christchurch, Paul Christ, says it is an honour to revive a show of such notable and critical success. “My Fair Lady has stood the test of time. Its original productions broke all previous sales records and set the standard by which future musicals are modelled.”

SIR BOB PARKER: NINE YEARS ON By Melinda Collins
Sir Bob Parker’s leadership was – and still is – widely regarded as what got our city through the dark days of 2011. We caught up with him about the poignancy of the nine-year anniversary.

out & about We’ve just passed the nine-year anniversary of the Christchurch earthquakes, how poignant is that date for you? It is an emotional reminder for me of how much we lost, from people to places, on that day in 2011. It is clear that for those of us who faced the terror of that day in Christchurch of just how far we have come with rebuilding the city but also how much the losses and fear of that day and the months that followed still shape our lives. How did being stoic for the city help yourself dealing with the emotions and upheaval at the time? Like so many others at the time in those first days, I was putting in long hours focused on the immediate rescue issues. It was my job to keep our community informed as best I could. This work meant that there wasn’t much space in my life for the luxury of personal reflection. Personal needs took a back seat to community needs, so the emotion at that time was shoved into the background. You smashed three ribs after landing on a wooden table in the Civic Building in the February quake, were the emotional scars as bad as the physical scars of the earthquake? The simple answer is yes. Like many people that I have discussed this with since that awful day, the traumatic scars remain. Those posttraumatic feelings don’t dominate my life, but they are there. I still react to any sound that imitates the rumble an approaching earthquake makes, or any unexpected vibration of a building. I am a master at imagining any building I am in collapsing around me; I know it is not likely to happen but I can’t stop that internal movie from popping up. I’m always checking buildings out for potential structural shortcomings and part of me is waiting for the Alpine Fault to let go. I know I’m not painting the most balanced picture, but I am not alone in this and it’s good to talk about it. But at least I’ve stopped checking Geonet or Canterbury Quake Live every hour or so, trying to predict if another quake is likely!
I didn’t realise I had smashed ribs in the earthquake until several days afterwards, such was the adrenalin. Joanna and I didn’t sleep for those first few days. Who could? But I noticed that every time someone hugged me (there was lots of hugging in those early post-quake days) it was getting more and more painful. I was at the hospital checking on my parents who’d both been admitted and when I complained about the chest pain to one of the staff they quickly arranged for an x-ray. We then spotted that several ribs were damaged. It didn’t stop the hugging though. I think that human contact kept us all going in Christchurch at that time. It was our emotional release perhaps. Everything from there was unprecedented! The central city redesigned, whole suburbs closed and managed home repair schemes launched, laws bestowing special powers passed and a new Government entity formed to run the show. How much complexity did this add to your role? The complexity was to be expected. The 22 February earthquake was, and still is, the only national emergency ever formally declared in New Zealand. It was always going to be a job that was bigger than Christchurch alone could deal with. However the multiagency complexity was tiring as it often interfered with what council regarded as normal council responsibilities. That did lead to conflict at times. As the initial postquake response descended into the daily grind of a community wanting to sort personal issues and needs, our council found itself under huge pressure from our people. Our every move came under extraordinary scrutiny from all directions. At the end of that term in 2013 it felt like a lifetime since the quake, not just three years. Facing urban decay before the earthquakes, Christchurch has risen in spectacular fashion. How proud are you of how Christchurch has been able to come back to life? I am very proud of our city. It is really a tribute to the amazing
people of Christchurch that we are an almost completely rebuilt, fully functioning city with a superb future. Many people wrote us off. The most common question from foreign media was “does Christchurch have a future?” I always answered emphatically “yes!” We had a lot of help from those around us in New Zealand and even from overseas but in the end ‘we’, the people of this place, did it. What do you love the most about the ‘new’ Christchurch? The newness; the new safe and strong buildings, the emergence of the waterfront along the Avon, the survival and restoration of key historic buildings which are now like diamonds set in concrete and steel surrounds. I also have a new appreciation of the suburban centres which became the powerhouses of our city’s survival and recovery when we needed them most. For me at that moment the city became more than just a CBD; rather a collection of villages clustered around a strong centre. In a speech to the Local Government New Zealand organisation in 2013, then-Prime Minister John Key stated that your “commitment to the city during its darkest hours will be his legacy”. How proud are you of this legacy? I was humbled by the Prime Minister’s words. The legacy is shared with so many people. Every citizen who was here in that difficult time and who stayed the course is part of that legacy. I am proud that the plan that my council and community created from our outstanding ‘Share an Idea’ project became the structural basis of the rebuild ‘Blueprint’ for the city. Subsequent councils and governments have essentially carried out the vision we laid down. So I love the feeling of the council that I led having been a key part of that planning. All of those councillors put incredible efforts into their roles in perhaps the most difficult of circumstances that any council in this land has ever faced. They all deserve much credit for that. That’s our collective legacy, of which I was but one small part.

Taking Off! By Tracey Edwardes
The only luxury commercial jet of its kind in the country has landed – poised to take tourism, business and bucket-list dreams to greater heights.
I
t’s a new beginning for the latest addition to the GCH Aviation fleet, a Bombardier Challenger 604. The full walk-around Canadian-built luxury jet sports a new engine and has been modified to transform into an international air ambulance when required. From important meetings to far-away events, it’s a way to get there fast and in jet-set style. With a glamorous fit-out in mahogany trim, cream leather seats and
24 5 March, 2020 Metropol
couch, bar and bathroom, the ride is the highlight. “We can take up to 10 people on board, and can fly say to the Melbourne Cup for the day, or a shopping spree in Sydney,” says GCH Aviation CEO Andrew Currie. “Jetting to the wineries is much more of a relaxing experience – like swapping the bus for a Mercedes! It’s really comfortable and quiet. You can hardly hear the engine.”
GCH Aviation is known to most as Garden City Helicopters. Many a mile has clocked up since pioneering beginnings on New Brighton Beach in 1983 with weekend helicopter flights and a rescue service. Founder John Currie, a current helicopter pilot, moved his family up from Manapouri and started Christchurch’s first helicopter operation. He moved to the former airport location in 1985 with everything helicopters – tourism, flight training, rescue and the 3ZB radio report. The New Zealand Flying Doctors launched 1994 – the first fixed-wing hospital service, where John’s son Andrew was both pilot and Operations Manager. John now semi retired, but will still phone or calls in every day, leaving all the Currie siblings at the controls – Andrew as CEO, Daniel as Chief Financial Officer and Chantelle managing the accounts. Professional wings have widened over the years (hence the name rebranding) and now includes Wellington Helicopters, Kaikoura Helicopters, GCH Greymouth, GCH Nelson, Pacific Island Air in Fiji, Vanuatu Helicopters and GCH UAV (drones), with 35 helicopters and now five fixed wing aircrafts nationwide. The new headquarters at 73 Grays Road was completed in 2017, taking purpose-built to an impressive, breath-taking level. Winning gold at The New Zealand Project Commercial Awards, it will soon be completely solar powered as a move towards sustainability. “A decade of thought and aviation knowledge has gone into the design,” Andrew says. “We had to create a balance
between all areas – air rescue, air ambulance, tourism, commericals and engineering. A place where everyone can meet up together. A luxury jet was always on the cards, but dad had said we needed the garage before the car!” The new addition arrived at the Jet Centre last month. “As a ‘first of type’ aircraft for the country, we are awaiting certification from Civil Aviation before putting her into service as the South Island’s only charter jet and international air ambulance.” The Jet Centre has customs facilities, shower and VIP lounge – a relaxing, private five-star space, also ideal for meetings on the fly. Whether for a marriage or business proposal, or unique unforgettable trip of a lifetime, Andrew says GCH Aviation’s services now offer a solution for everybody. Group Marketing Manager Caroline Blanchfield promotes GCH Aviation to the worldwide luxury tourism sector. “This is a big thing for New Zealand tourism,” she says of the new truly global jet. “It opens up a whole lot of opportunities. For people wanting to do business in the islands, it provides convenience, anonymity and comfort, and we can then link to our helicopter experiences in Christchurch, Fiji or Kaikoura, for example. Some fly to New Zealand just for a day’s whale watching. We are bridging the gap for travellers who are asset rich but time poor”. The service offers exciting endless opportunities for locals. “It could be Auckland to a concert, or Formula 1 in Queensland – all the things Christchurch people love to do.” www.gchaviation.com

Coming home… Having just celebrated its first anniversary, the Nurse Maude Hospital has become home for those needing long-term residential, end of life, complex and respite hospital-level care.
W
ith its large established garden and streamside walk, the residents enjoy warm and secure surroundings, each with their own ensuite, large communal and smaller private lounges. Nurse Maude’s nursing and medical team works alongside residents and their families to provide the very best individual clinical care with skill and compassion. That care
is based on the values that were established almost 125 years ago when Nurse Maude herself cared for some of the most vulnerable and frail in the Christchurch community. Having a sense of purpose, fun, meaning, control and dignity are all key elements of the care. Family and friends are a large part of that, with visits welcome at any time, including those from the family dog. “This is, after all, the residents’ home and they deserve no
less,” Nurse Maude General Manager of Marketing Sue Bramwell says. Meeting the individual needs of residents, many with complex health needs, takes a responsive, skilled and flexible approach, and the total commitment of nursing staff and specially trained volunteers. A sense of loneliness or social isolation can be a large part of getting older for some, so along with that nursing
care, Nurse Maude makes sure residents get the time they need to be listened to and enjoy the company of others. “It’s important for our residents, and their families, to be able to trust that we will look after and respect them and never forget they have had full and interesting lives before they came to live here,” Sue says. “Meeting their desire to be as independent as possible, to continue to be involved and know that they matter is just as important as meeting their health needs.” Residents at the Nurse Maude Hospital may be fully funded and there is no charge for those needing palliative care. “We can also provide private and respite care,” Sue says. “And we can step you through the process for funding and admission.” Situated in the heart of Merivale, and surrounded by shops and cafés, the Nurse Maude Hospital also has its own café where residents and their families can enjoy coffee and great food. “If you’re thinking of longterm or respite care with us then the best place to start is to ring and ask for a tour of the hospital. From there you can discuss what options are best for you,” Sue adds. www.nursemaude.org.nz

Folk Fan-Favourites
Award-winning Canadian contemporary folk band The East Pointers returns next month to awaiting die-hard Kiwi fans.
T
heir Australasian tour includes a Christchurch gig to promote their new album at Cassels Blue Smoke at The Tannery on Friday 3 April. Fan favourites in their home country, they grew up playing live music in their remote homeland locale of Prince Edward Island; their French and Celtic heritage fused into their souls and DNA. As a crowd-pleaser at WOMAD in New Plymouth 2018, the band was chuffed to rank just behind Adele in the New Zealand charts. This will be the second South Island visit after their gig with Kiwi icon Mel Parsons in early 2019. Tim Chaisson sings and plays fiddle, percussion and guitar. His beguiling instrument is

part of who he is. “My dad says I’m seventh-generation fiddle player.” Cousin Cody Chaisson rocks the bango; tenor guitar, Moog synthesiser and their best bud Jake Charron is on main guitar and keyboard. The name East Pointers comes from the fishing community near their home, East Point, where Cody was once a lobster fisherman. Yours to Break is their 10-track album released in September last year, where echoing bass melds with Celtic vibes – lush in sound and lyrics. The album has so far landed six East Coast Music Awards. Their friend Emma Watkins from The Wiggles is the dancer in the video of the album’s popular track Wintergreen.
They met Emma “randomly”, when touring Australia and ended up accompanying The Wiggles in “crazy massive arenas”. “She’s created a video incorporating sign language and dance into Wintergreen,” Tim says. “It’s so cool how it turned out. Emma also comes along to a few of our gigs to hang. The song stems from a conversation about mental health – Cody being bi-polar himself.” He says in everyday life some people often don’t see how incredible they are. “We named it Wintergreen, as it’s about surviving the storm – through all seasons.” Their second album in 2017 What we leave behind won
Traditional Routes Album Of The Year, at the Juno Awards – Canada’s version of the Grammys – which clocked up to four million streams on Spotify. “Our Acadian French ancestry somewhere along the way was influenced by the Scottish and Irish who arrived in East Canada. There has always been dancing and music to get us through long cold winters. “The band is doing a lot of international touring, and we’re always on the go writing and looking forward to the next project. I grew up around incredible musicians. Our type of music was always playing at the Cèilidhs, which Gailic for dance. We like to the bring old-style and new together.” The trio, all in their midthirties love New Zealand for its landscape and locals. “We have been holidaying here this summer with our families, during our four-month tour. Cody and I both have one-and-a-halfyear-olds; we love to bring our families along with us whenever we can.” Tickets: undertheradar.co.nz

Bring it back: Old vintage-inspired scarves are an autumn trend that are making a major play this fall. Whether you tie it around your neck, waist, belt buckle or bag – this is an accessory that is so versatile. Not to mention, can be totally unique, how many other people are going to be rocking a 1970s vintage scarf with the exact same pattern as you… Oversized baggage: In terms of your must-have arm candy, sometimes the bigger the better. Other than the fact it’s so practical to have a big tote to carry all your things, it’s just as if you’ve given your outfit an extra bit of thought. Channel your inner Mary Poppins with a tote that is practically perfect in every way. Hair me out: In our opinion scrunchies will never go out of fashion, they’ve been around since the 60s and don’t show any sign of slowing down. There seems to be a scrunchie out there in every pattern – fall colours are at the top of our list to add to our accessory collection. If you think they are just a casual look, try typing ‘pearl scrunchie’ into google. Buckle up: Occasionally all you’ll have to wear in your wardrobe is a plain old dress. Take it to the next level by accompanying it with a wide belt. Cinch these over your sweaters, dresses, blazers and that baggy oversized dress to define your waistline and add dimensions to any outfit. Hold on tight: Embellished tights will be all the rage this autumn. Married with the right colour combination, this accessory is a perfect way to make a statement whether you’re at the office or even your local coffee shop. Throw away those plain, black opaques (unless of course they’re mandatory at work) and add a bit of pizazz into your outfit choice. Shady lady: It might be obvious, but they’re practical! Sunglasses are a great way to keep out the glare and make people stare. Currently, we are obsessed with retro-glam sunglasses, they’re just so vogue-chic. Feel like you’re in a photoshoot anywhere you go.

Service
It’s the question on everyone’s lips at this time of year; ‘what trends can we expect to see over the cooler months ahead?’ New Zealand’s own lipstick maven Karen Murrell fills us in.
Karen Murrell 04 Red Shimmer NEW Gold Canister $32 www.karenmurrell.com
The 90s are heavily influencing fashion choices currently, how will that decade influence our makeup choices? You can expect to see the rise of chocolate browns, deep burnt oranges, cognacs, toffees and brown based plums in both our clothing and lipstick wardrobes this season.
What are some of the main lip colours that are going to dominate the cooler months ahead? Colour is a key tool when communicating, and, as we know, eyes always go straight to the lips as the focal point of anyone’s face; we are particularly drawn to watching them as we converse with each other. Browns such as 22 Bordeaux Rouge, lilacs such as 16 Lavender Laughter and deep orangeyreds like 21 Fiery Ruby will be on trend as the go-to bases of the season. This winter internationally we are leaning towards a totally honest palette of naturally occurring hues and its one that is very easy for all skin tones to wear.
What will be your personal go-to shade over the cooler months? I am really loving shaking up my lipstick wardrobe by wearing a bright True Love lip liner with Peony Petal lipstick over top. This year for me it is all about contrasting colours and shaking things up! Express yourself and who you are fearlessly through personalised colour selection and creation. Don’t be afraid to pair different lip pencil shades with lipstick tones, filling in the lip base with the pencil first, and slicking your favourite colour overtop to create a shade that reflects how you’re feeling in that very moment, and then walk out the door feeling empowered for the day ahead!
What global lip trends are on the horizon? The beauty and cosmetics industry is heavily influenced by political trends and, as the world becomes more uncertain, colours worn become brighter as people use colour to show their sense of freedom. In France they call it ‘peace paint’; we choose brighter colours to create positivity and independence. Metallic shades are still selling out as the lipstick bullet category continues to soar globally. Lip glosses and lip paints are back in vogue, paying homage to the love affair we had with them in the 90s.
What are some of the big shifts that we’ll see in the beauty world in the coming years? Within the next five years unnecessary boxing will become limited, as packaging moves towards becoming as sustainable as possible. Consumers will start to see the difference on the shelves. As designers, we need to realise that our packaging needs to decompose or be re-purposed and we need to take increased responsibility for that. I think it is the revolutions like this that cause the big shifts in our industry. We’re also just seeing the start of refillable cosmetics and makeup canisters which will grow in popularity very quickly. Metropol 5 March, 2020 33

wner Nikki Curd has focused on a warm welcome; an experience to relax into and enjoy the gorgeous selection of clothing and accessories as well as the fabulous smells coming from the range of candles and diffusers. “It’s really important to me to create an atmosphere that is friendly and fun, and where everybody feels welcome,” Nikki says. Opened over in Faringdon almost three years ago but now in central Rolleston, the store is a dream come true for Nikki, who has years of experience in fashion retail. Passionate about effortless dressing and clothing that transcends age boundaries, Nikki stocks a beautiful range of New Zealand
and Australian labels that meet that brief perfectly. Building customer relationships is really important and the tight-knit team of Nikki, Izzy and Liv are always happy to give great, honest advice and help customers choose that special something. New Order is also very child friendly, with a fun kids’ corner, so mums can relax while they browse. “We find the kids don’t want to leave now!” Nikki laughs. New Order also stocks footwear and a core range of casual menswear. Growing the home and giftware ranges within the store is something that Nikki is also excited about. New Order is open at 63-67 Tennyson Street Rolleston from Monday to Saturday, phone 03 347 0778. www.neworder.co.nz

It’s been a hot season full of sunny beach days, barbeques and time outdoors, but along with happy memories, summer is also known for leaving us with skin pigmentation and signs of ageing. Even with sunscreen use, UVA and UVB rays can cause freckles, dark sun spots, hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles. Dermapen microneedling treatments are highly effective for treating sun damage, working by creating microscopic channels in the skin which stimulate your skin’s natural repair process to regenerate, with the help of active skin-boosting solutions
containing vitamins, minerals and peptides. As melanocytes (pigment producing cells) are directly targeted, this process creates a more even skin tone. Dermapen treatments are also a safe and natural way to fight the ageing process, by using the skin’s natural healing response to kickstart elastin and collagen production, rejuvenating and plumping the skin without surgery or injectables. Nicola Quinn Beauty & Day Spa is a Gold Authorised Treatment provider for Dermapen, using only the latest model device and protocol Dermapen skin products.

STAND OUT IN
By Jess Murray
Sometimes it’s hard to keep up with the fashion trend cycle that is constantly spinning. Will it cycle back around, or will it go in a completely new direction? We’ve pulled together all the latest trends in foot fashion to help you stay up-to-date.

Stand out: We’ve all heard of ‘the little black dress’, pairing it with black boots would seem somewhat ludicrous. Hence why we’re telling you to find the brightest knee-high boots you can find. After all, orange is the new black. Well… so is green, yellow, blue and any colour of the rainbow. Make a statement and stand out (literally). Socks or shoes? Honestly, we’re not too sure we know the answer. But that doesn’t mean we wouldn’t recommend them! Sock trainers are on the rise, from Boohoo to Balenciaga, everyone’s designing a pair. You could wear them to pilates or Saturday brunch and no one would question it. Not to mention they’re extremely comfortable!

Love the lace: Channel your inner gladiator goddess with this 2020 shoe trend. What’s not to love? They can be paired with any outfit whether that includes a dress, jumpsuit or a pair of jeans. As an added bonus, they’ll keep your feet cool too.
Keep it simple: While we do encourage you to try a bright and bold change, for some people that’s an everyday look. So, why not switch roles and take a minimalist approach? Who said simple had to be boring? In fact, it can look quite classy and chic (especially if everything above the feet is filled with colour, patterns and accessories). Slide on over: It seems that the main trend for 2020 is comfort and we are certainly not complaining. When they say beauty is pain… they’re not lying. Especially when that pain is caused from three-inch heels that you’ve been wearing all day. The solution: slides. They don’t have to be Gucci to be on trend. But sometimes ones with a little quirk to them can really pull together an outfit!

hat started out as a passion for footwear and handbags, soon turned into a busy little business that has consistently kept on top of all the latest fashion trends and styles throughout the years. Today, the shelves are lined with popular brands like regular bestsellers, Josef Seibel, Kacper and Minx and new autumn lines of stylish ankle boots, textured leathers and heel treatments of veneer, perspex and wood are flowing into the store daily. The new owner has been confirmed as local resident, Rebecca Barker, who will continue operating
Rangiora Shoelines with the same well known and loved brands. Sandra and Jill would like to thank customers for their support and loyalty over the years. “It’s been an amazing experience and journey,” Jill says. “We wouldn’t have been able to do it without them! It was a tough decision to leave but we’re stoked it’s remaining an independent store, and also in very capable hands.” So it will be business as usual in this well respected and loved footwear store. “We’re high heeling it out of here, but come in before we ‘shoe’ off to say your goodbyes,” Sandra and Jill laugh. www.rangiorashoelines.co.nz

That winning smile It’s an all too common misapprehension that those with dentures have an easier time of it than those with natural teeth. This is because they look just as good as natural teeth and because they generally last around five to ten years. This leads to a “wear ‘em and forget about ‘em” belief around dentures that, however good it sounds, is not the reality.
J
ust like natural teeth, dentures come with problems too and these
can only be picked up by maintaining regular denture check-ups. Dentures
Plus owner Ryan Carlton recommends at least every two years, but if there are natural
teeth as well, then every year. A regular denture problem can be ill-fitting dentures, which can cause soreness and ulcers, and make eating difficult. Visual checks for possible oral cancers and other abnormalities are also carried out in check-ups. As with natural teeth, the cleaner the denture is, the easier it is to maintain oral health. Dentures need to be cleaned daily with a denture toothpaste and brush to help reduce bacteria in the mouth, as well as to tackle stains, plaque and tartar that can accumulate on dentures. Caldent Denture Cleaner can effectively remove years of stains and built up plaque and tartar deposits. It’s very popular with Dentures Plus clientele, with beneficial results showing in a few days, Dentures Plus are highly experienced dental professionals committed to providing the best quality service in dentures maintenance and oral health. Wigs that wow!
There’s every reason to celebrate at Georgies Wig Shop, for on 7 March the company celebrates its third birthday, and owner Eleanor Burgess and her Christchurch team are very excited.
“I
t’s a wonderful recognition from clients,” Eleanor says. “The relationships we’ve built with them have seen a growing and loyal customer base. Christchurch seems happy to have Georgies Wig Shop serving their needs.” Eleanor has been hairdressing for more than 40 years and knows full well how a great head of hair ramps up happiness levels. Having had a close friend suffer hair loss due to cancer, Eleanor also knows the despair people feel when faced with chemotherapy side-effects. It was this that prompted her to do something to help. Georgies Wig Shop is New Zealand’s largest wig stockist, with more than 500 quality real and synthetic haired wigs in a wide range of styles,
lengths and colours, as well as hair pieces and additions. Wigs transform lives – from people suffering hair loss from cancer treatments or alopecia through to the transgender community, performers, or those simply wanting a whole new look! Private consultations are available in the salon, at home or in the hospital. The real hair wigs can be foiled, curled and straightened, much like the client’s own hair. “We love to help those with hair loss, working with clients to help find a wig or hair piece that restores confidence and makes them feel completely themselves,” Eleanor says. For many, tension headaches have become an unfortunate side-effect of modern-day living, as we find ourselves at desk jobs and staring at computer screens for long periods of time. The good news is there are exercises and techniques that can help to relieve and prevent the pain. Metropol caught up with Oxford Women’s Health Massage Therapist, Stacey Harris, to find out more.
Tell us about tension headaches and what causes them? I’d say up to 70 percent of my clients have headache issues at times and the vast majority of these would be tension headaches. We spend a lot of our time with our head in a forward position, which tightens and stretches all the muscles in the back of the neck, and shortens the muscles at the front. We see this with people working at computers, reading books, studying, or on phones. How do we know we’re experiencing a tension headache or if it’s something more serious? As a massage therapist, I’m not qualified to make a medical diagnosis, but I always look for red flags. A tension headache is more likely to be worse at the end of the day. They happen when you’ve been working long hours, are under stress, have been grinding your teeth or experiencing muscle tension. But headaches can also indicate an ear or tooth infection, or a migraine, which is a
completely different ballpark and you need a doctor to diagnose it. If in doubt, see your GP, especially if you’re experiencing double-vision or dizziness. How does the tightened muscle actually trigger the headache? A thick band of connective tissue connects muscles in the front of our forehead to muscles in the back. If you have a restriction, like a tight muscle in the back, then it can affect the muscles in the front, causing headaches.
health
Let’s talk tension!
What can we do at home to avoid headaches? If I get a headache, I don’t use a pillow if I’m lying on my back. It gives the muscles a chance to relax. Exercises can strengthen the muscles in the back of the neck to balance any issues and drink water, it’s good for you. Hydration is key. Above all, get up and move every hour for a few minutes. It’s about doing little things. Prioritise yourself. Taking 10 minutes out regularly during your day is important! What are you working on in 2020? My primary focus is the connection between physical and mental health. I’m in my second year of a Graduate Diploma studying psychology and intend to work with people who have chronic pain conditions. I believe we can’t isolate our emotional health from our physical health. Our biology, along with the environmental and psychological factors that come into play in our everyday lives, all contribute to our health. I start my Master’s degree next year and want to hone in on the body-mind connection. It’s a fascinating thing to be studying.
What techniques can you offer at Oxford Women’s Health to ease tension headache discomfort? Primarily deep tissue massage and relaxation techniques. I work on the shoulder and upper trapezius muscles that go through the shoulders and right up into the neck. I aim to stimulate the client’s own relaxation responses and there are other techniques, like dry needling and cross-fibre techniques, that can be used.

Never Fail Gluten-Free Vegan Vanilla Cake By Sara Kidd
This three-layered six-inch cake is sure to wow the most hard-to-impress guests! Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 27 mins
METHOD Preheat the oven to 160C/320F. Grease and line three six-inch cake tins with vegetable oil and baking paper, and then dust the cake tin with a tiny amount of gluten-free flour to coat. Make your flaxseed ‘egg’ by mixing flaxseed and water together and set aside to thicken. In a large mixing bowl sieve flours, starch, baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugar together and give it a quick whisk to combine ingredients. In a large jug, mix vinegar with soy milk until it becomes thick. Then add oil and vanilla and mix together. Add thickened flax ‘egg’ and stir.
Pour liquid into flour bowl and gently fold ingredients together with a whisk until just combined. Pour batter into each cake tin making sure they both have the same amount of batter and tap on the bench to release air bubbles. Place tins into the middle of your oven and bake for 25 minutes or until a skewer poked into the middle comes out almost clean. Allow to sit in the cake tin for 10 minutes before turning onto a cooling rack. Run a knife around the outside of the cake before flipping it onto your cooling rack. Let it completely cool down and ice with your favourite vegan buttercream. www.sarakidd.com

Pork & Coriander Pot Sticker Dumplings Golden, crispy and incredibly moreish, these homemade pork and coriander pot stickers are a seriously fine showcase of New Zealand pork. Simple to whip up, they make the ideal sharing platter for visitors or a way to get the kids involved in the kitchen.
INGREDIENTS Pot sticker dumplings 2 cups finely of chopped Chinese cabbage ½ tbsp salt 250g NZ pork mince 1 tbsp ground garlic 2 tbsp ground ginger 2 tbsp soy sauce 3 tbsp sesame oil Small bunch of coriander, roughly chopped 1 cup of water 1 packet of wonton or dumpling wrappers
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Dipping Sauce Equal parts soy sauce, sesame oil and chilli paste 1 large spring onion, sliced METHOD To make the filling, mix together the cabbage, pork, garlic, ginger, soy sauce and coriander. Place a small amount of filling in the middle of each dumping wrapper, folding them over to form a half moon shape. Starting at one end, fold and pinch the wrapper tightly together, continuing this method until the dumpling is completely sealed. Set the dumplings aside to rest for about 15 minutes. In a pan, heat the sesame oil until it’s really hot, then fry one side of the dumplings until golden brown. Carefully pour in one cup of water and cover with a lid immediately – allowing the top side of the dumplings to steam. Once the water has evaporated, let the bottom crisp up. Remove from the pan and serve on a platter or in individual servings. To make the sauce, combine all of the ingredients together in a bowl. Sip away in style High tea is the perfect way to spend an afternoon, whether it’s a special occasion or a family event. Taking time out to indulge in the timeless art of catching up over tea (or bubbles!) and fancy treats served at your table is an increasingly popular option, despite its ‘oldfashioned’ origins.

O
verlooking Victoria Square, Market Place Restaurant at Crowne Plaza provides the perfect setting to sip away the afternoon – pairing premium loose leaf T2 tea and expertly brewed Vittoria coffee (or Te Hana Reserve bubbles) with three tiers of sweet and savoury delicacies. Highlights of the menu include freshly baked scones, assorted macarons and mini sandwiches, amongst other high tea classics. Gluten-free and vegetarian options are also available on request. Since opening in 2017, Market Place has been a popular spot for social events and celebrations over high tea and the venue also hosts a lavish Mother’s Day event which continues to sell out every year. Executive Chef, Hamish Watt, attributes the popularity of Crowne Plaza’s high tea to the freshly baked scones. “We use fresh whipped cream in our scone mix which makes them more golden and buttery”. High tea at Market Place is also the perfect accompaniment to the highly anticipated Showbiz Christchurch production of My Fair Lady opening 3 April. An early afternoon high tea sets the scene perfectly for the 4pm matinees on 5, 12 and 13 April, with Crowne Plaza Christchurch just a short walk from the Isaac Theatre Royal. For high tea bookings and information, head to www. crowneplaza.nz/hightea and for My Fair Lady tickets, visit www.showbiz.org.nz/mfl.
WIN WIN WIN To celebrate the upcoming Showbiz Christchurch production of My Fair Lady 3-18 April, Metropol has two individual prize packages to give away, both include a sumptuous high tea for two people at Crowne Plaza Christchurch and tickets for a matinee of My Fair Lady at 4pm, Sunday 13 April, Isaac Theatre Royal. These packages are valued at $200 each. To enter, head to the post on the Metropol Facebook page and simply tag your ‘plus one’. Winners drawn 26 March.

Culinary Downsizing
By Jess Murray
We’re all about embracing our inner foodies and even more so when it comes to entertaining after all, this is your opportunity to show off your inner Nigella. But who wants to try balancing a plate of pasta while mixing and mingling, right? Pint-sized portions are the name of the culinary game when it comes to cocktail-hour convenience, after all, it’s called finger food for a reason! The ability for the edibles to safely
1.
Mr Meat-yagi: Give your next event a (karate) kick with cocktail meatballs. By adding a dipping sauce that’s sweet, smoking or salty – this appetiser will fight its way into the heart of your guests. Sauce on, sauce off: either way is enjoyable.
PRO TIP:
2.
Mamma Mia: We all know a lover of lasagne. The creamy cheese combined with the hearty meat sauce is enough to make anyone’s mouth water. Bring the classic from plate to platter and watch as everyone’s eyes light up when it’s brought around the room in bite-sized portions.
sit at the end of a toothpick makes for a smear-free, quick and easy eat for your next event. We wouldn’t recommend downsizing without giving you a few options to try out. We check out the latest and greatest in bite-sized entertaining.
3.
Ex-skewers me: Meat on a stick… what’s not to love? Insert various other foods in between each bite-sized meat piece and we have a winner. Eat them separately or altogether in one mouthful – it’s up to you.
4.
Mini morsels: The world really is your oyster when it comes to bite-sized portions after all, just about anything can be shrunk. So get clever, get creative and try something random like baby burgers, pint-sized pancakes or ittybitty ice creams.
Fancy toothpicks with decorated ends are a must when it comes to bite-sized party favour utensils; just because you’re downsizing doesn’t mean you’re downgrading! Metropol 5 March, 2020 59
Out-of-this-world
delicious!
For Chantelle Quinn, Director of Twentyfour Catering Co, the course of true love does run smooth. Both New Zealand’s finest produce and the people she cooks it for, occupy equal first place in her heart. “I feel so lucky to do this job,” she says.
“The quality of produce, the availability in Canterbury and the extent of free-range options means that, together with our talented team, our results are out-of-this-world delicious.” A recent free-range plated duck dish has Chantelle’s mouth watering as she remembers it. Having had her own restaurant, she has found her true passion in catering. “It’s so much more personal; it makes our days special when we go into someone’s house to meet and cook for them. We love the process of getting to know people and having them become completely comfortable with us in their home.” Catering for private dining is a specialty and, as a small family business, they don’t pre-prepare menu lists. Instead, Chantelle and her team meet you and talk about your event type, preferences and guest list, creating personalised menus from there. “Our take on food is Kiwi style with a French influence,” Chantelle says.
“We do canapes, small plates, standing events, wedding and corporate events.” An array of trucks is not their style. “We are more bespoke – a private kitchen, hire equipment and it’s amazing what we can do with a barbeque,” she says. With the motto “have kit, will travel” you too can have your own Twentyfour Catering Co food affair. www.twentyfourcatering.co.nz

NOW OPEN AT THE CROSSING
Contrary to popular belief, sometimes being left Home Alone isn’t all that scary. Especially when you’ve put time and effort into making your humble abode a chic place of comfort. How to achieve this you might ask? Don’t worry – we’ve got you covered.
3 4 5
Cozy corner: Gone are the days where the line between knowing whether the throw on the couch is purely decorative or not. Why spend money on something that doesn’t serve its main function? Yes, a Versace $3,028 black and white blanket or throw may look appealing and feel as soft as a cloud upon touch, but only the bold (or maybe the Kardashians) would dare to have it wrapped around them whilst indulging in a cheese board or glass of wine. Buy a shearling blanket and curl up on the couch with a good book. Colour crazy: It probably feels as if all we suggest is to add a pop of colour to your life – whether that’s in fashion, cuisine or home. But that’s because without fail, it will always add a little fun into your life. Imagine walking into your kitchen, living space or bedroom and there’s a bright decorative object amongst your beige everyday items. Where’s your eye going to be drawn? What’s going to make you smile? Relaxation royalty: Kiwi singer Lorde said ‘we’ll never be royals’ – while this may be true… we sure can live in the daydream and pretend. Canopy beds are making a comeback and nowadays you don’t have to drape them with gold-speckled, heavy fabrics featuring the family-crest; this isn’t Game of Thrones. Modern versions do exist, they just opt for acrylic or metal frames. Go for geo: While this may seem like a random suggestion, geometric patterns are trending literally everywhere! There’s something about the way the lines interact that makes it so mesmerising. Although with the rise of the geo-pattern, comes the opportunity for overkill. Pick and choose your geometric items very carefully – it’s all about balance after all.

Old school: Whoever said out with the old and in with the new, clearly doesn’t understand the word vintage. We’re not suggesting that your house becomes a time capsule to the 1800s or 1900s, just include one or two statement pieces that showcase the traditional detailing of the furniture. Make your new saying ‘what goes around comes around’.

Angelique Armstrong Armstrong Interiors Ltd
Get excited about your renovation! Metropol catches up with award-winning interior designer Angelique Armstrong from Armstrong Interiors about how to wrap your head around renovating. Renovating can be overwhelming, where is the best place to start? When deciding to renovate, start with your wish list, then plan the most essential things to complete, getting professional advice on the cost of materials and the price of trades. It is important to do things the right way round, enabling you to be prepared prior to demolition work. Plan a start and finish time. Have project management under control with a
schedule of when jobs will be completed, so you can organise tradespeople and prevent hold ups. Many people live in their homes during renovations, so working through the house, one room at a time is ideal. Generally we think of interior designers being at the end of the process when we are adding colour and texture. Should we engage an interior designer at the start of our project? It depends on the extent of the renovation. If you’re changing the layout of the kitchen, bathrooms or laundry, there are lots of decisions to be made, so it is good to get professional advice before starting. If you just want colours, drapes and furniture from your interior designer, a colour schedule can be given to your painter later on in the project after the gib stopping.
How will I know whether I need to get building consent for our renovation? These days a building consent is expected on the smallest of jobs – adding a bathroom, building a deck, they all need to be consented. This is not a bad thing, it also protects you when you go to sell! All the ground work is done and ticked off. How can you choose your tradespeople wisely to avoid “cowboys”? When it comes to choosing the right people to do the job, you need to listen to people around you. Do they come highly recommended? Are they master builders? Cheaper isn’t always better! We provide good advice and can recommend a handful of tradespeople we’ve worked with. Phone 03 356 2636 or check them out on Instagram armstronginteriorsltd. www.armstronginteriors.co.nz

A softer palette Muted, serene shades make a peaceful haven. Warmer neutrals are snuggling up to hazy pastels for a luxuriously lived-in look as cool colours now give way to more yellow-based neutrals such as creams and all renditions of dirty white. Star of the season, mustard, melds into this vibe with a cosy dollop of colour. Warm up any cool greys with nude and champagne pinks, washed-out teal, dusky aqua or faded moss greens.
Cutting the corners The art deco era embraced all those sensuous curves – as seen in those glamorous circular mirrors and artwork, seating with gorgeous curved detailing and those graceful flowing figurines. Cylindricalshaped coffee tables are also a cool change. Couches are comfy with soft, sloping sides. Round or oval tables can squeeze in more diners, inviting conversation - no one is on the edge.

Relax, it’s the 2020s and this decade’s décor retreats into a comfort zone that simply says ‘chill’. Home is a sanctuary where we recharge our batteries. We look at ways to do them up, so we can wind down.
Lounging around A soft-cornered ottoman really owns the living room. They can aspire to everything a coffee table can but without the sharp edges – from magazines and trays of morning tea through to extra seating for visitors or a footstool for three. In deep-button velvet they’re opulent eye-catchers. Magical Moroccan-style poufs add exotic chill factor; in fact oversized oval cushions in all styles are relaxing up lounge landscape. Egg swing chairs and circular seating of the swinging ’60s have also become cocoons we love to lounge upon.
Tactile textures Freedom from formality is frayed fringing, tussled tassels, worn velvets and canvas, linen and cotton. Pamper with pom poms and mohair rugs and include touchable softness from silks and satins to worn leather and faux fur.

Fade away Time worn and sun-kissed has earned its place. Let pale, aged, natural wood have a break from the high polish. Relax in the imperfect charm of wicker, rattan and cane in a faded shade. Further invite with paled plump cushions and washedout cotton throws. Faded evokes well-loved style. Holiday mode For a retreat-style home, embrace pale flooring of parquet or light woods, exposed rustic beams and let in plenty of light. Bedrooms can be 24-hour hibernation hubs with lounging areas and soft dreamy colours to send us into slumber. On the other hand, lounge couches have become bed-like with the trend in sumptuous wider seating. Upholstered chairs around lower casual dining tables also become hang-out zones. After all, who wants a visitor to perch politely on the edge of their seat – we’re now saying welcome, stay awhile and chill.
A den for everyone This beautiful serene space has been created to be an inviting and comfortable escape that’s refreshingly gender neutral. Just a quick change of the focus artwork shifts the room subtly from more of a ‘she-den’ to a ‘he-den’.
I
t might seem like an unusual way to think about a space, but there are key times when a room that appeals to as many people as possible is important. In a shared office, for example, as this room could be, it really needs to be a space that whoever needs it, wants to spend time in it to get that work done.
This lush jade green space, with its walls in Resene Mother Nature, has the feel of a warm tropical jungle escape. The layers of green accessories throughout the room – from the darker Resene Permanent Green and Resene Family Tree to the grey-green of Resene Rivergum and the pale Resene
Peace on the desk chair – all enhance that feeling. The delicate and streamlined design of the furniture in this space means the use of Resene Noir never becomes overpowering. It emphasises the drama of the green walls without weighing the room down. The floors are stained in

Resene Colorwood Greywash for a relaxed, textural anchor to the room. Extra texture also comes in the leafy green plants for a look that is warm and inviting. Accessories in greys such as Resene Silver Chalice pull it all together to create a space that is not too warm, not too cool, but just right.

DETAILS MATTER IN ACHIEVING ARCHITECTURAL VISION
Delivery of concept drawings marks an exciting milestone in any architectural project, yet what follows is critical in determining success. As architect Craig South observes, detailing holds the key to fulfilling the potential of inspiring concept design.

n our practice, it is always a great feeling to share concept designs with our clients and be a part of that excitement when they can start to visualise how their finished house will look and feel. From their perspective, it may sometimes seem as if our work is all but done at this point. In fact, this is really only the beginning of another fundamental phase that must be managed well to ensure the design promise is fully realised. During the next stages, technical documentation needs to be completed to a meticulous standard so the finished product will properly align with the original concept. Such documentation will help guide the project through to an inspiring conclusion by ensuring, for example, that junctions will line up as expected and cladding will be applied correctly. Careful detailing will also need to ensure that a building is weathertight and complies with all building code requirements. As architects, we appreciate that this phase can sometimes feel slow for our clients who are eager to see tangible progress on-site, as it does take some time and most of this technical work is invisible from their end. However, taking the time to get every detail right at this point will not only save potential heartache later on but will also give peace of mind that the original concept will materialise.
Our approach is thorough and includes modelling the building right down to its foundations to make sure all details are correct. Once the documentation is completed, there is a detailed handover to the builder followed by ongoing collaboration, with documentation serving as a key communication tool. We are very conscious of the investment clients make in our service and will do everything we can to ensure the final outcome eventuates in line with expectations. Of course, once builders and other consultants start coming on board, we become part of a much bigger team. Maintaining good communication across all aspects of the project as it proceeds is a top priority for us. We work with others who share our ethos and passion, from builders to structural engineers, with our forward focus never wavering from the original architectural vision. We continue having conversations with contractors throughout construction and seek to resolve any evolving issues or deviations from the detailed plan. It is risky not to be involved in this way as poor detailing can have flow-on impacts that may need to be remediated or will degrade the intent of the original concept. It is not a risk we are willing to take. Within the overall project budget, the costs associated with achieving a quality process and robust documentation is modest. We believe the service that
home
I
architects offer in this area is invaluable. While it is not as exciting as the concept itself, we do believe details matter and the results are obvious in projects around the city where that approach has been successfully adopted.

Framed Treasures
“If you have something you want framed, no matter what it is, bring it to me and I will turn it into a stunning wall feature.”
J
ohn McCann of Artworks Gallery does mean he can frame literally anything. After all, he has framed items as unusual as a large wedding dress with a long train and a Māori piu piu (flax skirt), to nails and fastenings from the demolished Godley House on Banks Peninsula. “Framing sports memorabilia, certificates, embroidery, precious old documents or garments and beautiful artworks means every day of my job is different. That and seeing how happy people are with their finished work, makes
what I do really exciting and satisfying.” The walls of John’s gallery are lined with examples of his work, while scores of frame samples draw the eye with their potential for creating the perfect environment for a treasured object. “We source quality frames from Indonesia and Malaysia, as well as exquisite frames from Italy and Spain. I will soon be one of only a handful of framers who stock the Bellini range of handmade, hand-gilded frames from Italy.”
John says there is a frame for every taste and budget. “My team and I see ourselves as consultants – we help to determine the final choice of frame and mat boards after discussion with the customer. Each item requires its own unique presentation depending on its subject matter, style, age and where it will be placed.” All framing is done on site at the Main North Road gallery. What prompted you to enrol at Art Metro, Christine? As Art Metro wasn’t far from my home, I thought I’d give painting a go. I could hardly draw, let alone paint, but once I started, I was surprised at what I could achieve with help from my tutor and peers. What’s your preferred medium? Oils - much easier to fix or blend when I make a mistake! What about genre? I’ve done a few animal portraits from photos. I recently painted a landscape, which I really enjoyed. What keeps you returning to Art Metro? We’ve a lot of banter. Everyone’s friendly, encouraging and incredibly honest about each other’s works. I enjoy the different age groups. A friend joined a few years ago, so it’s a chance for a catch up.
Art-tastic!
Christine Green tells us why she’s been such a fan of Art Metro for nearly a decade.
Who is your tutor? I started with Livia and I now have Sarah. I couldn’t achieve what I do without them! They can suggest what to try and paint, but over time I have discovered what I do and don’t like to paint and now have definite ideas of what I enjoy doing. What does painting mean to you personally, Christine? I paint for my own enjoyment and to gift to friends and family. gardening game UP YOUR
By Céline Gibson
As summer fades, garden sheds resound with activity as tools are sharpened, wheelbarrow tyres are pumped, yard carts are laden with gardening implements, seed packets are sorted and gardening gloves are inspected for holes. The dewy mornings and sunny days of autumn make for idyllic weather to connect with the soil and get the garden into the best shape it can be for winter and beyond. We check out how to up your gardening game this season.
F
irstly, a bit of maintenance and tidying up is required, so bring out the secateurs for a spot of pruning. Prune away dead or broken branches on woody shrubs and trees but don’t get carried away and prune everything in sight. Leave plants with seeds and berries to bring interest and colour to the garden, but also for birds and insects to feast on throughout winter. Mulching helps maintain soil moisture and protects roots over winter, not to mention prevents weeds from poking up where they’re not wanted! Add 5-8cm of mulch to garden beds while taking care not to pile it against the base of plants.
Start a compost pile of fallen leaves. Over time the leaves decompose into leaf mould - a compost which is a rich source of nutrients. Flower gardens require the removal of diseased foliage from perennials and shrubs. Mark where perennials that go dormant through winter are so that they’re easily located in spring. Now is also the time to plant spring bulbs before the soil gets too cold. To prevent weeds going to seed and overtaking the garden in spring, a thorough weed removal is also timely. For edible gardens remove anything that has gone to seed, shows signs of disease or
has died. Ensure all roots are removed too. Plant vegetable seedlings of cauliflower, broccoli, beetroot and winter lettuce; as well as herbs like chives, parsley and rosemary. Note where tomatoes and potatoes grew in order to rotate planting locations next season. If you’re leaving the vegetable patch bare over winter, take this opportunity to add nutrients to the soil by planting green crops, such as lupin or mustard seed. This is also the ideal time to plant whatever else delights the gardener’s eye – be it perennials, trees, shrubs, roses, climbers or fruit trees. To increase the number of feathered friends visiting your
autumn garden, entice them with regular feeding to see them through the cold months ahead when food can be scarce. Attracting birdlife into the garden also encourages them to snack on pesky garden pests such as caterpillars and snails. A win-win for both birds and the gardener! British horticulturist, garden designer, craftswoman, photographer, writer and artist, Gertrude Jekyll, may well have had autumn in mind when she made this observation: A garden is a grand teacher. It teaches patience and careful watchfulness; it teaches industry and thrift; above all it teaches entire trust. Metropol 5 March, 2020 73

Easy summer success with roses Wanting six months of colour, great picking and good scent? Terra Viva Owner Peter Worsp tells us why you should look no further than roses.
D
on’t be fooled by the rose ‘experts’ who tell you that roses are ‘needy’ when it comes to care and attention – they’re actually very hardy and their ‘needs’ are easily met. They say that roses respond to three things – water, feeding, and an occasional spray, but if you’re only going to do one of those, make it water every time. The old adage ‘Don’t do as I say, do as I do’ certainly applies to my gardening. I’m finally following the instructions I hear myself giving to customers – and achieving the results. Avoid overhead watering where possible to keep the foliage dry and lessen the chance of fungal disease. A hose trickling at the base of the plant for 20 minutes gives the ideal good deep watering. It’s almost impossible to over-water roses. Producing so many flowers makes roses hungry and, just like us with food, a little and often suits best. Feeding in September, November, January and March gives consistency and, with plenty of water, you will be rewarded with roses all season. An occasional dose of Seaweed Tonic promotes good plant health and assists the plants to maximise the uptake of fertiliser. Summer pruning is just as important as winter pruning and it’s very straightforward. When all the flowers on a stem have finished, take off the stem 15mm above the joint of five outward-facing leaves
and the stem. This doesn’t have to be the first set of five leaves – go as far down the stem as you reasonably can because the lower part of the stem will push out the strongest growth. Strong re-growth = strong flowering. Spreading compost around roses improves fertility, soil texture, aeration and moisture retention. When planting roses, leave enough of the ‘trunk’ at the bottom to allow for future composting without burying the graft. Giving roses a bit of ‘breathing space’ allows for good air movement which lessens the chance of fungal disease. Good watering and feeding encourage new growth which is always healthy, while roses without adequate water and food get stressed and open themselves up to pests and diseases – just like people under stress. An occasional spray, including the underside of leaves, wards off any problems and the recommendation is to alternate sprays to prevent any resistance building up. Super Shield is a good combo to deal with both insect pests and any diseases; alternate with a combo of Mavrik insecticide and Fungus Fighter for diseases. Kiwicare Organic Super Sulphur is great way to combat mildew and rust. If any (or all!) of the above makes no sense, then just give us a call or drop in and we can give full clarification! www.terraviva.co.nz Metropol 5 March, 2020 75

lectric vehicles, yes but more in the very way we use the technology and how that will interface with individuals. We already have UBER, but imagine a future where the UBER is driverless and you can choose the type of vehicle you want to be picked up in. With 5G communication availability, this scenario is no longer the stuff of science fiction, but it’s actually technology that many of the large motoring companies already have in development. I can already see a future where the average person doesn’t require a garage, insurance or vehicle maintenance; one where the roads are less congested and the vehicles safer. Some of the interfaces I’ve had with the latest vehicles on the road demonstrate just how close this reality is. What does surprise me is how quickly it is happening.

he DBS Superleggera is based on the same platform as the DB11, but don’t think for a moment it’s the same car. The giveaway is in the name, Superleggera, which in Italian means Super Light. The DBS weighs in at 1800kg, but thanks to lots of carbon fibre bits and bobs, it weighs 75kg less than the DB11. Its textbook coupe lines are some of the most muscular and toned of any Super GT. Think of the DBS as the car equivalent of Jason Statham in a Saville Row suit. However, the handiwork of Aston Martin design guru Marek Reichman features function as well as form. Side vents, which hark back to Aston design of yesteryear, channel air up over the wing mirrors, through gaps in the rear three quarter, and out through the lip spoiler at the rear. This ‘Aeroblade’ system provides 180kg of downforce at speed. Providing said speed is a 5.2L twin-turbo V12 and Aston’s slick ZF eight-speed auto box. This engine and gearbox combo are an all-conquering powerhouse, with a gargantuan 533kW and 900Nm of torque. You could attach that to your garage and still reach 100km/h in 3.4 seconds. Top speed? The far side of 330km/h! Inside you still get Aston’s incredible quality and craftsmanship, and looking ahead you see that 1:27:29 long PM muscular Metropol copy.pdf 1 22/01/2020
bonnet stretching to the horizon. The switchgear is all previous gen Mercedes, which does the job fine, but feels a tad last week in a car costing $465,000. On the flipside, once you fire up the DBS, the ensuing V12 bellow is nigh on one of the most primeval soundtracks of any car on sale today. Around town it is incredibly docile, just watch the low nose on speedbumps, but when you hit the great wide open, you need to be awake. To say the DBS is quick would be a severe understatement, all it takes is for you to stray above 2,000rpm, and you are fed the kind of acceleration capable of rearranging your fillings. Each shift is crisp and you realise the car you wanted to overtake is now a spec in your rear-view mirror. The carbon brakes slow you down with breath-taking precision and in Sport Plus, despite being a big Grand Tourer, you can eat up bendy bitumen with pinpoint accuracy. The Aston Martin DBS Superleggera is lightyears ahead of its DB11 and Vantage counterparts in Aston Martin’s family of supercars. It might be too much oomph for some people, but those wanting the ultimate in refinement, luxury and earth-shattering speed, should look no further than what is very possibly, the greatest Aston Martin road car yet.

he reason why Avid Car Caffe is so popular is simple, the group does not pander to a particular brand or type of car. So, whether you have the latest supercar, or a lovingly cared for five-door hatch, the passion you have for your car is what Avid Car Caffe is all about. “The goal is to bring people together and share their love of cars and bikes in a casual noncompetitive environment, support other owners and offer ways to enhance ownership through gatherings, car care tips and product advice,” says founding member Bryn Thompson. Avid Car Caffe meets up every month to experience each other’s cars, over a piping hot cup of complimentary coffee. “Our gatherings are held on the last Sunday of each month in the early morning, so owners can plan and then have family time in the afternoon. We have also been supported by some of Christchurch’s leading dealerships and car related companies and many have invited the group to be hosted at their premises,” Bryn says. Caffe. According to member Alan McKinney, the group is a breath of fresh air for local petrolheads. “The Avid Car Caffe is all about loving cars and promoting car culture in Canterbury. We are united by our love of all things automotive,” Alan says. The sheer variety of cars was astonishing, from a Morris Minor Drophead, right up to a one–of–a kind Ferrari 250 Testarossa. Group member Craig Ryan owns a new Tesla Model X and what impressed him the most is just how open the group is to accepting all cars, even if they produce zero emissions. “I love coming to the group because of how welcoming everyone is. It’s great to have people recognise why I love the Tesla and I love being able to share it with like-minded people,” Craig says. “Everyone is so open and gets so excited about so many different types of cars,” says another member, Nick de Lautour. After a day in the company of some of the most passionate car fanatics in Canterbury and experiencing some truly amazing cars from all makes and eras, needless to say this motoring scribe will be back for seconds really soon.

FORTUNATE TO HAVE THE MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER SPORT FOR TWO WEEKS, I REALLY GOT TO USE IT TO ITS FULL CAPACITY.
ERING & REACH
t’s one thing getting to drive something small and sporty, but when push comes to shove, the opportunity to take on a seven-seater with heaps of space ended up being a lifesaver. Throw the seats down and you’ve got an extreme amount of space to carry everything you could possibly need. Taking a group of friends to Diamond Harbour’s Sunday music festival, there was plenty of room for picnics and people. That’s also where the 4x4 comes in handy, crossing paddocks and rough terrain with ease. It’s also when you figure out how stable she stays fully loaded on the open road, just how pleasant the sunroof is, that the automatic boot is a godsend when trying to juggle picnic baskets and gear, and that power and simplicity of design make for a great experience, not just a good one. Can you believe that all this comes in at under $39,900 without on-road costs? I really pushed the boat out sharing the experience with family and friends, but it was such a good one, with the comments of those that joined me including “Oh this is nice” or “It feels great in the back!” Now I’ve driven 7-seaters that cost four times as much in the last few months, but if you’re looking for a great looking seven-seater family option with class, you’ve found it here.
