In a state of evolution, the Garden City’s architectural typology is nothing short of distinct. “Accept what is, let go of what was and have faith in what will be” —Sonia Ricotti New Zealand could become a “lifeboat to save humanity from extinction” if there was a catastrophic pandemic, according to an Otago University report pre-dating COVID-19, just a few short months ago. Although it was a fictional genetically-engineered pandemic threatening human survival that formed the basis of the report, the World Health Organisation has officially declared COVID-19 as a ‘pandemic’ and global panic surrounding the spread of the virus has since reached epic proportions. Although it makes absolute sense for countries to take urgent and aggressive action on border control to contain its spread, it is equally important that we adopt a ‘business as usual’ approach when it comes to our domestic activities; our economy relies on it. COVID-19 has spread from biological to financial and economic parts of our lives. But it’s in our hands how this affects our domestic trade. It’s not time to stop going out for dinner, to stop heading to the movies, or to stop spending time with friends; it’s time to support our local businesses, while following the Ministry of Health’s hygiene guidelines of course. It’s an unprecedented time in the travel industry and we’re in uncharted waters; airlines have ABC AUDITED cancelled routes, cruise companies have postponed trips and countries have closed their borders. But at the time of print, New Zealand has had no community spread of COVID-19. While it might be time to reconsider long haul travel, maybe this is the opportunity to realise just what we have in our own backyard. Why not head into your local travel agent and get planning your Bay of Islands escape, a Queenstown vacay, or AUDITED perhaps this is some extra time to plan a bigger, better overseas sojourn… for next year! In the meantime, our younger generations are watching us and learning about how to respond to stress and uncertainty. Let’s wire our kids for resilience, not panic.

always wanted to have a job that felt more like a hobby and never really saw my future as sitting at a desk all day,” says Olivia, a qualified Reformer Pilates instructor. At the start of the year, the 28-year-old said goodbye to her corporate career and launched Grounded Pilates, upstairs in the lofty light-filled studio at 150 Office Road in Merivale. A friend thought up the befitting name of Grounded Pilates, using Olivia’s unique surname Groundwater, which hails from Scotland’s Orkney Isles. “I fell in love with pilates in 2017 when I was an Accountant at Covent Garden in London for a global media company. The highlight of my day was running across the street at lunchtime for a Reformer Pilates session. I just loved the atmosphere and the workout.” Olivia then returned to Auckland from London. While continuing to work in the finance industry she also completed the STOTT Reformer Pilates course and frequented pilates studios. Determined not to postpone her dream life, she hunted for the perfect space back in her hometown of Christchurch. She grew up near Dunsandel, then as boarder at Christchurch Girls High, she played netball for Canterbury and loved volleyball, basketball and everything health and fitness. “I always enjoyed the business side of things as well. My partner is a banker, so starting my own fitness business seemed right, and combines everything I know and love, and I hope to expand in the future. I’ve noticed since the rebuild, everyone is open to trying out new things here in Christchurch.”
She says Reformer Pilates is popular overseas and is gaining traction in Canterbury. Reformer Pilates helps us build a stronger core, improves posture, mood, body shape, muscle tone and increases flexibility. “It’s strength building of lean muscle with a workout that doesn’t leave you exhausted. It really works your core strength.” Olivia has invested in high-quality machines made in USA and says they are amazing to work with.Pilates was founded by German physical trainer Joseph Pilates in the 1920s and incorporates the mind as well as the body. “Your mind has to be fully engaged throughout the whole workout. It’s great for the brain and body co-ordination, and for all ages. So far the youngest is 18 and the oldest in her 70s. “We spend so much time hunched over our phones, laptops and steering wheels these days; pilates is the perfect antidote to help us correct our postures and put our shoulders back!” The upstairs studio is everything she envisioned – high ceilings, exposed beams, light painted brick, and fresh air, and a separate changing room. “The regular class sizes are small, just six people. Classes are all run by me at this stage, so I am able to give them all my personal attention. Everyone has been so friendly – it really doesn’t feel like I’m at work!“ Metropol has five Grounded Pilates sessions to give away to a lucky reader. TRUE COLOURS
The juxtaposition of strength and softness that represents women is something Dame Trelise Cooper always seeks to capture in her designs.
I
t’s not unlike the juxtaposition of Trelise herself; the beautiful, elegant and bubbly woman that heads a fabulous fashion empire, with colour at its heart and style in its soul. It’s also a juxtaposition that was intentionally weaved into her latest collection – both figuratively and literally. “I think it’s about a new romanticism that transcends the trouble that’s happening in the world,” she says of Trelise Cooper Pre-Fall 2020. “There’s something kind of romantic, mythical, that takes us out of our every day. The colour palette is soft and strong all at once; it pairs pinks with red; there’s a vibrant green that matches the colour of the earth. “I think it’s about transcending and going to somewhere dreamy.” She’s the long-reigning queen of colour and the latest season is no different; there’s pinks, greens, vibrant florals; there’s also polka dots and sequins. “I definitely have my favourites,” she laughs. “I really love the green of this season; there’s a green dress that I wear that has a tone on tone embellished ribbon embroidery (Runaway Rudi Dress), I love the Make My Heart Beat Coat and I like the green pinstripe suiting (Like Miss Markle Dress and the Have I Told You Shapely Dress), then I like the red hearts on the tulle (Nothing But Ruffle Skirt) as well actually… “Towards autumn there’s more oyster and silver together, which I think is a lovely combination; it’s strong and soft at once which captures the strength of women; we can be strong and soft which is always what I try to achieve.” Though it’s hard to imagine her in black – the day we meet she is wearing the most divine deep tropical pink that is almost impossible to describe in
words – she says she has worn plenty of the dark shade throughout her life. “I love black and have worn a lot of it in my life, I also employ a lot of women who love black and though we are mostly known for our colour, we sell black! All our garments have an option in black just for New Zealanders.” However, she says, the power of colour is addictive. A couple of the ladies in the Trelise team that were steadfast on their black eventually dabbled in colour and they’ve never gone back. “When you wear colour people notice and people comment! Those complements become addictive; so many women tell me that story.” So what are Trelise’s words of wisdom when it comes to going to the colourful side? Start small! “Stay with your black but try one piece of colour with it, whether that’s a top with pants or one of the girls here wears the bright colour printed kimonos over black. “Black makes such a lovely canvas for colour. We do a lot of open-front garments that can be worn buttoned up down the front like a dress, or open like a lightweight coat over jeans or when you’re wearing black; that’s a really great introduction to colour.” She gets her bold inspiration from a life well lived. “Inspiration is a concept I find really interesting; it’s magical; it’s kind of mysterious. I’m always surprised at how inspiration I’ve come across on a trip whether to Morocco, India, Greece or Mexico, somehow makes its way into my collections through colour, texture and pattern.” It was domestic travel that has provided that inspiration in recent times. In Christchurch to give an exclusive preview of her pre-fall collection at Ballantynes, Trelise was impressed by the city’s re-birth. “It is a slice of heaven! The people are always
so welcoming and friendly. This last trip I was struck by how international Christchurch is. I think Ballantynes is the most beautiful department store, at an international level and I was so impressed with how the city has developed.” She headed to ‘the strip’ for dinner. “All those restaurants along there was so interesting and Amazonita was so cool and casually stylish, I wish we had it in Auckland! “I think Christchurch has done a really great job of rebuilding and it’s an exciting place to visit.” Trelise has seen a lot in almost 40 years of business, but nothing has come close to the past six months. Just before Christmas, her Australian customers were hit with droughts, then the horrific bush fires, then came floods and a retail recession. As soon as light beckoned at the end of the tunnel, COVID-19 started unfolding. “This is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. The ramifications are uncertain so far, though nothing is ever certain in business really.” Though she has had to hit the pause button on a swag of international travel, Trelise is feeling optimistic about 2020. There’s plenty of international opportunities in the works, particularly with her eco bag that the brand has been producing since 2008 (it’s sold millions!). “It’s a changing feast of ideas at the moment; things are changing daily with what’s happening in the world. “I had travel planned, first to Mexico, then Korea and rural France, but at the moment that all has a big question mark on it. So I guess 2020 is all about keeping business building and keeping things going; it’s a time where making plans is interesting and we’re just keeping on keeping on.”

Seventh sensational season In April 2020, three months before New Zealand Opera presents Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro in Christchurch, The Narropera Trio will present its version of the same opera in four performances, in The Golden Room of Lansdown House, on the Old Tai Tapu Road.
T
hese Lansdown narropera performances are the perfect ‘prep’ for in-depth enjoyment of a staged performance of the opera. One unquestionable
advantage of narropera (of which this year marks the seventh Lansdown Narropera Season) is that it makes clear an opera’s complex story; and there are few more complex operatic stories than that of the Marriage of Figaro. Into the carefully narrated story of the opera, 12 pieces of music, arranged for chamber music trio of soprano, violin and piano, are placed at the appropriate moments and done in such a way as to continue the story telling, in music. Another advantage of the narropera format is its length – around 80 minutes and without interval. Bring a hamper and picnic amidst the beautiful surroundings of Lansdown! Performances of Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro form part of The Lansdown Narropera Season 2020, held at 132 Old Tai Tapu Road, Christchurch 3 April, 6pm; 5 April, 4pm; 18 April, 4pm; and 24 April, 6pm. Niue: The Pacific’s best kept secret This tropical gem is just waiting to be explored. The island is so small that when you arrive at this inviting South Seas retreat, the flight is likely to be met by a welcome party of locals who are eager for you to enjoy an authentic island stay. Between July and October, humpback whales regularly visit Niue. There’s no reef, so they swim right up to the shoreline and you can dive in for a dip with them. There are very few places in the world where you can swim with these magnificent, gentle giants. The unbelievably clear water with visibility of up to 80 metres, makes Niue a diving and snorkelling paradise. Niue is not just a natural paradise — the island offers a rich culture where smiling locals will happily welcome you into the festivities. No matter what draws you to Niue, you’re sure to have an authentic, unforgettable holiday.

Life and Limb By Melinda Collins
The Guinness Book of Records lists Sir Ranulph Fiennes as ‘The world’s greatest living explorer’ and there’s few of the harshest places in the world that he hasn’t conquered. His body – now 76-years of age – has been pushed to the absolute brink and, despite some missing fingertips, he is in remarkable condition.
H
e has run seven marathons on seven continents in seven days, just a few months after suffering an almost fatal heart attack; he was the first person to complete a surface circumnavigation via both the poles – a 56,000 kilometre track that took three years to complete; he has experienced the intense torture of prolonged exposure to minus 40-degree temperatures; and he’s climbed both Everest and the notorious north face of the Eiger despite suffering terribly from vertigo. The missing fingers – selfamputated by hacksaw when he was suffering from frostbite – may be the only visible acknowledgement of this life well lived, other than a twinkle in his eye that hints of a confidence that can only be derived from mastering the
world. Despite doing just that, he remains humble, having spent a good portion of his life raising funds for charity and encouraging us to look after the world; after all, if anyone could recognise just how precious our world is and the importance of keeping it that way, it would be Sir Ranulph Fiennes. He may be fitter than the average septuagenarian, but life in the fast lane has taken its toll; he has suffered several heart attacks, a double heart bypass, a cancer operation, diabetes and scoliosis – an abnormal curvature of the spine, but the effervescent charm and wit that make him such a good speaker are very much in tact. “I do have an ability to suffer cold and hunger and not get
nasty,” he admits, though he remains unconvinced when it’s suggested he has a particularly high threshold for pain. Frostbite damage to his right foot once required him to cut a 7.5 centimetre slash in the side of his shoe to ease the pressure on his damaged flesh; one time he removed his balaclava and took with it a chunk of frozen flesh; then there was the time had to prise apart his scabbed lips to eat a bowl of porridge before looking down to see his oats had turned to “blood gravy”; and yet still, “a high pain threshold? Definitely not!” His memoir, Mad, Bad & Dangerous to Know, documents some of the horrific injuries (which he calls just part of the game) and the incredible achievements, but for an up close and personal
account, he’s heading to New Zealand in May for a live show that offers a personal glimpse into the life of an adventurer. Both light-hearted and strikingly poignant, the live show spans Sir Ranulph’s childhood and school misdemeanours, his army life and early expeditions, right through to the Transglobe Expedition to his current Global Reach Challenge – his goal to become the first person in the world to cross both polar ice caps and climb the highest mountain on each of the seven continents. An Evening with the World’s Greatest Living Explorer, Sir Ranulph Fiennes will be held at the Aurora Theatre in Christchurch on Saturday 23 May. Tickets are available from Ticketek.

MAAT GROUP
Putting your investment dollar to work
Equity Investment Specialists, Maat Group, continues to bring value to the national commercial landscape and investors alike.
M
etropol talks to Managing Director Neil Tuffin about how commercial property equity investment can make your dollar work harder for you. What does the Maat Group offer and what does your name mean? Maat Group is a commercial property equity investment company. Maat Group adopted the Egyptian goddess Maat as its symbol; she’s the goddess of truth, justice and balance. What is commercial property equity investment? It’s the purchase of commercial property as a direct property investment. By investing as a shareholder in a company formed for the purchase of an investment, the investor is able to purchase a larger property with
a better yield than what is available if purchasing as an individual. The shareholder becomes a part owner in the property, along with other investors. The property is fully managed for investors including property management, financial management and general administrative duties. How long do investors have to leave their money in the investment for? Our equity investments don’t have any fixed time frame. Investors are encouraged to remain in the investment long term as this passive investment can provide capital gain over time. If circumstances arise that mean an investor has to exit, we can assist with this and facilitate the sale of these shares to the incoming investor. You can contact us for further clarification on our exit process at any time.
How often do investors receive distribution payments from you and is it taxed? We distribute our returns on investments on the 20th day of each month. If you’re invested as an individual or as a joint partnership, we’re required to deduct your tax portion prior to your distribution payment each month. Our investments are run as a PIE investment with the tax rates of 10.5 percent, 17.5 percent and 28 percent. If you’re invested under a trust or company, you may elect a zero percent tax rate for your investment. What is the minimum investment? The minimum investment for our equity investments is $25,000. You can purchase multiple shares in each investment up to a maximum of 20 percent of the share parcels on offer. Do investors earn capital gain? The capital gain would be paid at the time of the sale of the property. Investors may receive a capital gain payment in addition to their original share price if the property is sold in excess of the original purchase price.

Do you charge any investment fees? The company formed to purchase the investment property pays for the management for the property along with additional expenses such as accounting or audit fees. These are paid from the rental income of the property and don’t affect the distribution rate. The fee structure is set out in the product disclosure statement (PDS) which is available at the time of investment.

A gripping affair By Céline Gibson

What was it about their relationship that moved you to write their story? Mattie pined for her fiancé, Charlie. It was like two lost souls who had the same story in different worlds and a love that would never die. Is Mattie still alive? Sadly, both Mattie and Charlie were long-since deceased when we decided to write The Rigel Affair. It’s a work of fiction, based upon true events. When my husband, Bud, read Charlie’s 30 letters, he said, ‘You must write this story’. So, the project began. This is a story of dedication of one woman and one man whose love transcended the war. It was heartache not only for her but for Charlie – a heartache that spurred his endurance to stay alive and fight the most horrific war in history. In reading Charlie’s letters, did you begin to see your mother differently? My mother would show me Charlie’s letters, but
never read them to me. Only when Bud saw the letters did we read them. I now have a much deeper understanding and appreciation of my mother’s love for Charlie Kincaid. What do you hope readers will take from this novel? Beginning our research, we discovered interesting, exciting events that had never really been properly told. It became a historical feeding frenzy! We hope readers will enjoy the Mattie and Charlie story, but equally important is their historical journey through exciting and true wartime events. What’s next up for L M Hedrick? We’re about 50,000 words into The Rigel Affair sequel and I have a crime novel ready for the final edit and formatting. When did your love affair with writing begin? From an early age. Being an only child, the world of make-believe filled my senses. When Bud and I decided to write The Rigel Affair, we both attended numerous creative writing classes at Auckland University in order to learn the craft. Bud’s five years in the US Coast Guard after university saw him working three years as Operations Officer on a buoy tender. This tender was 1940’s vintage, so Bud has intimate knowledge and experience to portray life aboard the USS Rigel. The Rigel Affair is available and in hot demand at Piccadilly Books. www.piccadillybooks.co.nz

When did you first become aware of Charlie Kincaid? When I was a child. The war bought Charlie Kincaid to my mother’s doorstep and the war sent him away. No one understands how situations outside of their control changes peoples’ lives. My mother (Mattie) could never find an answer. She married my father, Syd, and I was their only child. Mattie would pull the box of Charlie’s 30 letters down from the top of a bedroom cabinet and tell me their story like she was crying out to be heard.

Did you request any information from the breeder? Absolutely. I asked about worming, any vaccinations which had already been done and which diet he had been on; all three of these are important to continue (or start) once the new pup arrives with you. Puppies need to have more frequent worming treatments when they’re young. All puppies are born with worms, so it’s important to get on top of these. The best way to protect your puppy is by vaccinating. As with worming, they receive more frequent vaccines as puppies, so it’s important to get the timing right. Meanwhile, having some of the diet that the puppy was eating previously is a good way to avoid an upset tummy – even if it’s only to transition them onto the diet you intend on feeding them long-term.
Adding a furry new addition A new furry addition to the family is always an exciting time, but it can be stressful too! There are lots of things to learn and things to prepare for. Diana of the Ourvets team has recently had a new addition, Rupert, a gorgeous, nine-week-old corgi. We caught up with Diana about what she considered when taking on her new addition.
What else will you do now that you have him? I’m definitely going to get him microchipped and registered with the Companion Animal Register (NZCAR). I will also organise insurance for him. Starting puppy preschool is also high on the list (he’s quite the rascal!). There are many insurers that even offer a free period for puppies and kittens! It’s a great idea to shop around for insurance to find the best fit for you and your pup, as there are many options. Ourvets holds puppy preschool classes in St Albans and Halswell. These are focused mainly on educating owners on raising well-rounded, happy pups at home, and less focused on teaching specific commands (although we do cover this too!). These are just a handful of things to consider. Remember, the best place to get pet advice is from your veterinarian. Ourvets recommends ‘Best for Pet’ – a preventative healthcare plan that will give your pet discounts and free consultations so you can ask all the questions you have without the worry of cost. Ask in clinic to find out more, or visit www.bestforpet.co.nz. www.ourvets.co.nz

Building trust
Recent Australian research has found that ‘trust’ is the foundation of all human connections. The same research showed that while there are people and professions trusted for their honesty, equally there are people and organisations that are distrusted. “This goes to the heart of corporate culture and governance for every company,” (partner content from Roy Morgan – Time magazine).

Catherine Overend, Director of Braided Foundations Ltd, says whatever struggles employees are dealing with, be it fiscal, emotional, poor health or disability issues, if there was trust amongst employees and employers to iron out any workplace problems through services, such as those offered by Braided Foundations Ltd, then organisations would work more efficiently. This would result in a higher chance of wellbeing in the workplace. “It is so important to help bring about civil society. BODY POSITIVITY
It’s time to take to the streets! The ASB Christchurch Marathon turns 40 in 2020 and Sunday 31 May offers something for everyone, from the classic 42.2k marathon, to a half marathon, 10k and the Kids’ Mara’Fun. The annual Queen’s Birthday weekend affair takes you on a scenic tour of quintessentially Christchurch landmarks such as the Christchurch Town Hall, Hagley Park, the Avon River and parts of the earthquake red zone.
Sonya Renee Taylor may have first founded The Body is Not An Apology movement back in 2011, but body positivity has hit the next level as a growing number of local women seek to empower and educate. From Kiwi amputee Jess Quinn’s anti-Photoshop petition to super swimmer Sophie Pascoe being announced as Jockey’s first Paralympic ambassador, we love everything about this!

LEADING LADIES
NIGHT FLICKS It’s not too late to enjoy night flicks, with 10 days still to go of the American Express Openair Cinemas at Christchurch’s new Rauora Park, on the corner of Hereford and Manchester Streets in the heart of the city. Enjoy entertainment, live music and DJ performances before the latest and greatest feature films light up the big screen. www.openaircinemas.co.nz
Girl power may be a distinctly 90s throwback, but leading ladies are where it’s at with some of the hottest flicks this year. Margot Robbie has reprised Harley Quinn for the latest DC Comics offering, Birds of Prey. She then joins Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman in a dramatisation of the scandal that took down the head of Fox News in Bombshell. Anya Taylor-Joy leads a new take on Jane Austen’s classic romantic novel Emma, adapted for the screen by Kiwi author and Man Booker-winner, Eleanor Catton. And if you missed last year’s Ride Like a Girl, that’s one to catch up on!

BEAUTIES OF BLUFF
The new decade is well and truly here, and we’re loving the opportunity to dial up the boldness with colours that are loud and proud. Exuding confidence and powerful feminine energy, red is the hot new addition to your autumn wardrobe, like this spicy combo from Witchery.
This month marked the start of Bluff oyster season in New Zealand and we’re looking forward to making the most of this until around the end of August – or earlier, dependent on when we hit annual harvest limits. The plump, juicy oysters, grown in the cold, clean waters of Foveaux Strait are said to be the most flavourful in the world. Metropol 19 March, 2020 23

n Thursday 2 April the Tannery will become a fashion runway to support those families with a child in a hospital away from home. Raising $76,000 for New Zealand Ronald McDonald Houses last year, organiser Maree Lucas is working on an exciting show that she hopes will raise even more of the critical funding required to keep their charitable hearts pumping. The Tannery will again transform into a spectacular venue for this year’s new designers, which will now also include Lynn Woods, Rhind, Jets Swimwear and something special for all those beautiful mums to be. “We have been lucky enough to get Egg Maternity on board and having some gorgeous pregnant ladies on the catwalk will make a bit of a change to previous shows,” Maree says. Other outstanding designers who will return to the runway include Repertoire, Annah Stretton, Augustine, Kathryn Wilson, Brides of Merivale, Trelise Cooper, Disciple of Discipline, Cutler and Co, Out of Comfort, Working Style, Flo Clothing and Alaska Tees.
Among the runway talent are Tactix Netball players and families who have stayed at a Ronald McDonald House. Determined to improve upon each successful year, Maree says event organising is her passion, but particularly for this incredible cause that holds a very special place in her heart. She experienced firsthand the real importance to families who have a child in a hospital away from home, when her twin nieces and family spent two months at the Auckland Domain Ronald McDonald House. “It was such a calm, welcoming and family-orientated escape for them away from the hospital,” she says. In 2019 Ronald McDonald house supported 4,630 families. “We are proud to put together another entertaining evening with gorgeous fashion and hopefully raise a lot of money for the Ronald McDonald Houses.” The M Factor Fashion show will be held at 6:30pm on Thursday 2 April at The Tannery. Tickets are available at www.iticket.co.nz and are priced at $75 for VIP, $750 for a table of eight and $55 for general admission.

Prime your eyelids. A good base is vital, so having your lids oil free is a must! There are a range of eye primers available or you can use Nikita’s trick and buff translucent powder into your eyelids. This helps get rid of any oils and mattifies the eyelid for eyeshadow.
Apply a transition colour through your crease using a fluffy eye blending brush. A transition shade helps blend all the colours together. Opt for an orange or light brown shade as these tend to work with any eyeshadow colours. Make sure to blend this in well. Apply a deep brown shadow first (and then blend) before applying your black shadow. Have you ever noticed how a smokey eye turns a blue/grey colour during the day? This is because the black shadow oxidises with the oils on your eyelid as the day goes on. Unfortunately, no matter how much eye primer you apply, you can’t stop your eyelids from producing oils during the day, so a brown shade is essential if you want to help prevent this. Blend blend blend! The key to a good smokey eye is blending. Use a small fluffy eye brush to blend out every layer of colour as you go and don’t forget to blend at the very end to make sure there are no harsh lines. Apply your favourite mascara or falsies to complete the look. www.facebook.com/nikitahhx/

STAR POWER
Canterbury’s golden girl Sophie Pascoe is one of New Zealand’s most successful athletes, with nine Paralympic swimming gold medals and six Halberg Awards already under her professional belt.
By Melinda Collins
N
ow she’s shooting for more than the stars; Sophie has lent her high profile to a new role as the 2020 women’s ambassador for underwear brand Jockey, which she says is not just a huge boost for the Paralymic movement, but also for herself. “To be a para-athlete showcasing all of my body in lingerie, it is very raw and knowing those pics in particular have had little to no touch-ups at all is a proud moment. “I’m proud to showcase my body and show people like me that they don’t have to be afraid of their bodies.” As a professional athlete, Sophie has a unique relationship with her body, having pushed it to its limits to be leader in her field. “There are times in my life and there are still times in my life that is really challenging for me to look in a full-length mirror. These pics showcase all of my body, which is really powerful and great for my confidence.” She will of course not be resting on her laurels this year, as she prepares for the nationals in April, the qualifying round for the Tokyo Paralympics in August to September. “Sport created this identity for me, but to have this identity outside the pool that people can relate to is really powerful,” she says. “It was really a no-brainer to align with a company that showcases real women with real bodies and expressing how positive that is to society.”

Celebrating Couture in Canterbury By Céline Gibson
Young emerging designer Natasha Senior was 14 when she won the top prize at the 2018 YMCA Walk the Line catwalk, part of New Zealand Fashion Week. Her winning entry of linen top and neoprene trousers is now being showcased alongside garments from established designers, such as Trelise Cooper and Adrienne Whitewood, at Canterbury Museum in its Moana Currents: Dressing Aotearoa Now exhibition, which opened Saturday, 22 February and runs to 14 June 2020.
M
oana Currents: Dressing Aotearoa Now was developed by the New Zealand Fashion Museum. Co-curated by Doris de Pont, New Zealand Fashion Museum Director and Fashion Journalist Dan Ahwa, the exhibition looks at how Aotearoa New Zealand’s identity is shaped by our place in the Pacific Ocean (Te Moananui-a-Kiwa), and celebrates contemporary expression in jewellery, clothing, textile, and body adornment in New Zealand. Both emerging and established designers are included in the exhibition to explore a range of connecting themes, such as; the adaptation
and application of technology, mastery and invention in the use of heritage craft techniques, including stitching and weaving; the applications and evolution of cultural motifs, and the ongoing dialogue between wrapping and structured dressing. Some of the garments and adornments showcased in the exhibition are streetwear from Bill Urale’s (aka King Kapisi) Overstayer label, a missionarystyle dress by Trelise Cooper, a Neil Adcock hei tiki that can dance, Steve Hall’s androgynous dress, and a merino wool wrap that’s reminiscent of a muka kaitaka (flax fibre cloak), created by London-based
New Zealand designer Emilia Wickstead, in collaboration with Woolmark in 2019. Canterbury Museum is the first South Island venue to exhibit Moana Currents. Canterbury Museum Director Anthony Wright says the exhibition is a terrific showcase for the extraordinary work of Aotearoa New Zealand’s fashion designers and the pride we have in the way Pacific cultures have influenced our Kiwi sense of style. “What we wear really does reflect who we are as individuals and as a nation. We think this exhibition will be very popular with both our local and international visitors.” Doris de Pont says she’s
thrilled to be bringing the exhibition to Canterbury. “Moana Currents shows how our history of migration and cultural exchange is visible in what we wear and how we adorn ourselves. Aotearoa New Zealand’s identity has evolved over time as generations of people migrated here. Who we are and how we dress is a reflection of those journeys, both past and present, and an expression of our aspirations and how we want to be seen.” This three-part project includes the exhibition at Canterbury Museum, as well as an accompanying book and online exhibition found online. www.nzfashionmuseum.org.nz Metropol 19 March, 2020 33

Hormonal Help Modern times provide us with unprecedented levels of convenience, creation, and connection. But with everything accelerating at such a rate, so too is the level of stress being placed on our systems; disrupting our hormone health and straining our ability to keep up with everyday life.
“S
tress is a survival response,” leading Clinical Nutritionist Ben Warren explains. “It’s important to be able to separate the stresses we can’t control from the stresses we can control and take a mindful approach to influence how it affects us.” Ben is hosting a nationwide tour Back to Balance with Beatrice Thorne from Eve Health, with the pair hitting Christchurch on 7 April for
women eager to learn more about the intricate role that hormones play in their entire body’s system and subsequently discover how they can support their own hormone journey. Resolute on restoring balance is Ben’s life goal. The founder of BePure, he has developed two new products based on science, research and 15 years’ experience to support women at every stage of their hormone journey; ProgestoRenew and
Prenatal Nurture. BePure Health’s latest research, surveying more than 14,000 women, showed that more than 87 percent of experienced hormone issues that impacted them on a daily basis, citing heavy, painful periods – or no periods at all – anxiety, irritability, fluctuating moods, insomnia, chronic stress, brain fog, skin issues, weight gain, poor energy, bloating, water retention and difficulty falling pregnant.
Of all of the women studied who experience hormonal imbalance, issues with stress and adrenal function as a result of lifestyle, diet and environmental factors was a key determinant. “It’s important to make use of every tool available to you,” Ben says. “We want to help women achieve optimal wellness, addressing which diet and lifestyle factors have led to the environment for imbalance to exist.”

The ‘fast’ life Much positive research has been done on intermittent fasting (IF); used for thousands of years for mental clarity and health, it’s safe and effective. But it’s hard, right? New Zealand researchers have found a way to manage spikes in hunger during the fasting period and overeating as we enter an eating cycle. Developed by Plant & Food Research at New Zealand’s largest government research institute, Calocurb is a world-first product that uses a New Zealand-grown bitter hop flower extract, which triggers the “bitter brake” – a physiological mechanism that tells the brain you are full. “The global trend of IF coincided with the launch of Calocurb capsules which are scientifically proven and to help manage hunger during a fast,” Calocurb CEO, Sarah Kennedy says. “The timing could not have been better for this first-to-market product and the natural extract of hops is now being used by consumers to successfully support their intermittent fasting for best physical and mental wellbeing.” www.calocurb.co.nz

Cosmetic tattooing: A MUST-HAVE BEAUTY BOOST
Cosmetic tattooing has come a long way in technology and technique – it’s now the must-have beauty boost of the future.
A
ngela Millar has a rewarding career in micropigmentation, framing faces with youthful semipermanent eyebrows and eyeliner. Feathered, powdered or a combination of the two they are now more natural and flattering than ever before. “They don’t look like they’re tattooed at all,” says Angela, who has 30 years in the beauty industry. “They used to be quite heavily applied with ink. Now the treatment sits a lot higher on the skin, and looks more natural. They just fade beautifully over time, lasting from one to three years. “No micro-blading is
involved, just a superfine nano needle barely scratching the skin’s top layer in the gentlest way, I pre-map and draw them on first, and take time talking things through. Eye liner can be either fine or dramatic, it’s up to each client.” Angela is part of the KM Surgical and Dermatology specialist medical facility in The Avenue Health building on Bealey Avenue, with the advantage of working in a day-stay accredited facility. Scrupulous in her pre-consolation, she travels regularly to the latest training and conferences, and has invested in quality machines from America and
Germany. “After the first treatment, they only need to be refreshed. I love a day doing this, as everyone always walks
in smiling! You wake up in the morning, exercise or swim and still look great with no makeup. And it really does make you look younger.”

The Unichem Prestons team also offers flu vaccines off-site for large groups and workplaces, and to residents at Alpine View retirement village. Ryan says making the vaccination free in pharmacy to those most at risk, (pregnant and elderly) adds another layer of protection for the local community. “Having it instore and available to the general public means it’s easily accessible and convenient to everyone,” he says. “The earlier you get your vaccine, the sooner you’re protected, with the main flu season running from May to September, though it’s important to remember that it’s never too late in the season to get your vaccine.” It is available at Unichem Prestons pharmacy from April. material/cement into the mouth over time. Amalgam contains approximately 50 percent mercury by weight, along with silver and other metals. Most composites and some cements used to fix crowns to teeth contain chemicals such as BPA, TEGDMA, HEMA, phthalates and sometimes titanium dioxide. All or any of these chemicals can cause health concerns. Biologic Dentistry seeks to use materials that are safe as possible while still allowing for excellent clinical results. Swiss dental materials manufacturer Saremco is a manufacturing company with the same goal. Its restorative system is reported to be the only one where every component is free of HEMA and TEGDMA (as well as above-listed chemicals) and very recently designed to resist enzymatic dissolution. It is available to all New Zealand dentists through Bioholistic New Zealand Ltd – www.bioholistic.co.nz. Why not choose the healthier alternative, as the team at Dentistry on Merivale has? Hair me out By Jess Murray
It’s perfectly normal to find yourself spontaneously wanting to change up your hairstyle. Some people dye their hair a neon blue or purple, with the reasoning being ‘just because’. If you’re going to make a drastic (or not so drastic) change to your hair… you may as well be on trend. Bangs are back: Not only do they help you to shape the face, if they’re cut right, they don’t require much styling at all. Our only recommendation with these – do not attempt to cut them yourself. If you haven’t seen the horror stories of self-cut bangs or fringes… take the time to before being bold and taking to the scissors yourself.
Eyebrows Eyeliner

Bobs, bobs and more bobs: These days there’s so many bobtypes it’s hard to keep up; blunt bobs, textured bobs, short bobs, long bobs (lobs), asymmetric bobs, wavy bobs… the list goes on! Lucky for you, they’re all on trend.
WITH THIS ADVERT
Colour me red: Brunette and blonde are everywhere, so why not stand out from the crowd? We’re not talking a fiery Jessica Rabbit red! A subtle warm tinge that takes centre-stage when you step into the sun is always nice. 42 19 March, 2020 Metropol

Oversized, floaty and fabulous, this fashion statement for autumn has exaggerated its proportions to both capture attention and keep everyone comfy as the leaves fall and temperatures drop. SUPERPOWERED SLEEVES Cinderella is donning the pronounced but pretty puff sleeve to show she means business – this time in sexy fabrics from completely sheer and shimmery through to coloured leather. For long sleeves, it is time for them to balloon, like with the Felix Shirt by Morrison, pictured. Balance out this festoon of fabric with a micro skirt or slinky pants.
PAPER BAG PANTS More flattering than the eco-friendly title suggests, these baggy-waisted trousers, stylishly cinched at the waist with a ropey or wide belt, are the sassiest autumn trend. Pair with a casual crop top, or dress up with a puffed sleeved blouse or smart shirt. Mostly high-waisted, and either cropped or turned up at the ankles, they make generous-fitting comfort look effortlessly feminine.
HANDBAGS WITH MORE No need to juggle a multitude of shopping bags; swing an oversized tote instead. Big and very big bags are still here – very practical for those of us that are always on the fly. Invest, and choose a colour and fabric to look great with an outfit, as this is the boldest of accessories.
COATS OF VOLUME Oversize the timeless, chic trench or the puffy, padded parka. The fourseasons-in-one-day dilemma is solved. Forget oodles of layering – it’ll feel like snuggling into a blanket when the weather turns nippy, after a sun-kissed autumn day in a sleeveless top.

A Muscle People Physiotherapist demonstrates some of the Dynamic Spines exercises
Put your back into it!
Approaching life with a back that lets you do what you want, when you want to, is something none of us can take for granted. In fact, up to 80 percent of us will suffer from back pain at some points and it affects not just mobility, but also mood.
L
uckily, the team at Muscle People understands how core strength is a foundation stone of fitness without injury and a pain-free back. To strengthen the core which, in turn, supports the strength and healing of the spine, the team of physiotherapists at Muscle People has developed a programme of therapeutic exercise classes called Dynamic Spines. The classes are now available at all Muscle People clinic, including Wigram Skies.
Each course consists of eight one-hour sessions, including exercises to take home and complete to get the most out of the programme. As well as the medical and wellbeing benefits there is an enjoyable social aspect to Dynamic Spines. Limited numbers mean you receive higher oneon-one attention from your physiotherapist instructor within each class as you work to your individual diagnosis and ability, but you also get to share the challenges and fun within a
group setting. The Dynamic Spine classes are run at two levels: the first level is about learning to locate and strengthen your core through dynamic and functional exercises, while the second level progresses these skills further. Before enrolling in a Dynamic Spines course, clients are assessed by one of the team to ensure the classes are going to be the best approach for their issues. “Our team wants to know that participants will see real results from the
classes, before they make the commitment to the programme,” Laurie Moore, Director and Physiotherapist at Muscle People says. Each course begins with low impact exercises which gradually build in intensity as participants progress. Classes can include pilatesfocused exercises and working out on the Oov – a fun, odd looking piece of equipment that activates core stabilising muscles while gently extending the spine. “People enrol in our courses through a number of routes,” Laurie says. “Because Dynamic Spine courses are designed and instructed by physiotherapists, they are available as treatment through the ACC system. We receive referrals from back specialists when clients need to strengthen their core before treatment, or post-surgical clients and, of course, we have private clients who want to address back pain, mobility and reverse a gradual decline in core strength.” To find out more about Dynamic Spines, phone Muscle People on 0800 027 194. www.musclepeople.co.nz Metropol 19 March, 2020 45
Canterbury Bride Accessorising for the big day By Clementine Page
Bridal accessories may just be the icing on the wedding cake when it comes to the big day – and this year beholds beautiful pieces aplenty. We’re pleased to present the best bridal accessories we can expect to see heading down the aisle this year. Vogue veils Veils are the icing on the cake when it comes to bridal attire, offering brides the chance to showcase their own signature style, whether that’s dainty and demure or bold and beautiful. This year we’re expecting to see a shift from plain and simple veils toward more unique, modern designs. Embroidered and lace-edged styles are sure to remain steadily popular, while unconventional coloured designs are expected to have their moment. But veils covered in pearls, crystals or flowers are what true wedding dreams are made of – and they’re definitely a bridal fashion favourite for 2020.
46 19 March, 2020 Metropol
Heavenly headpieces Whether you embrace a big, bold band or take the minimalist approach with a more delicate piece, headbands make for eyecatching additions to more simple wedding attire, as do crowns, hair vines, barrettes and pins. This year, these ladylike headpieces feature pearl embellishments, shiny diamantes and funky 3D florals that will elevate your wedding hairstyle into something unforgettable. A thick, jewelled headband can be attached to a veil for fuss-free functionality, while those opting for no veil can consider flower crowns or hair vines featuring metal flowers and diamantes. For the minimalists, why not adorn your tresses with the natural, whimsical beauty of dainty pins featuring sparkling crystals, opalescent pearls or romantic florals?
High-fashion hats Calling all high-fashion brides-to-be! This wedding veil alternative is the perfect crowning glory to your bigday look. Perhaps the most unexpected yet practical wedding accessory of all, hats are proving themselves to be a popular bridal accessory for the fashion-forward among us. While it is, of course, important to consider the setting of your wedding when selecting a statement hat, the possibilities are endless – how about a straw hat for that French-countryside feel? A Provencal-style one with ribbons for 20th century appeal? Or a floppy black hat for indie boho-inspired nupitals?
Statement sleeves These arm adornments are hot topic in the street fashion sphere, so it’s not surprising they’ve made their way into the bridal world too. From delicately embellished sleeves to big, bold, balloon sleeves, these over-the-top statement-makers reigned supreme on the bridal runways of 2020 – the poofier, the better! Offset a simpler silhouette with long, voluminous sleeves for that much-needed sartorial edge, or try puffy, shorter mesh sleeves for a sweet, feminine feel. Love the long-sleeve look but want to keep things sexy? Consider opting for an off-the-shoulder style or one with a plunging neckline.

Philip Pullman once said, “After nourishment, shelter and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world.” In a stroke of luck for Christchurch, you’ll find exactly these things at the adored No.4 Bar and Restaurant in Merivale.
ffering exceptional food and drink, a charismatic setting in an original historic homestead, and really great stories, No 4 is the gastropub for all seasons where you’ll feel at home with friends and family, colleagues and clients. Open for lunch and dinner every day and brunch on weekends and public holidays, No.4 is also a premium function venue with four different areas available for hire and these are all fully catered. You can choose from The Library, The Red Corner, The Private Courtyard
and The Restaurant, for up to 70 guests. Select from a variety of seating styles, and everything from drinks and nibbles, to crafted finger food, to full set menu options cater for all tastes and budgets. Knowledgeable, friendly staff will manage your event from your first inquiry to fond farewells at the close of play and everyone will think you are so clever for creating such a marvellous event. Warm and friendly at any time of the day, No.4 retains the cosy feel of a ‘local’ but adds a subtle sophistication in food and service. The wine list is extensive and caters to all tastes with treats from around the world included, while beer is a venerated speciality with the Monteiths range, New Zealand boutique beers, international favourites, plus a special guest beer to discuss with the hop brewing afficionados on staff. On the menu you’ll find that classics like beer-battered fish and chips are joined by prime cuts of sirloin and angus ribeye served with truffled duck fat boulangère potato and sumac roasted vine tomato, and takoyaki balls (octopus dumplings with takoyaki bbq sauce, sesame mayo, bonito flakes and wakame). And that’s just the start of the really great story. www.no4bar.co.nz

StellarVintage The anticipation is building at Cross Hares Wines; the 2020 grape harvest is about to begin.
“T
his looks like being a stellar vintage,” owner Natalie Edwards says. “The quality and quantity of the fruit on the vines is superb. The weather over the ripening period has been settled and we haven’t had any major rain events, hail damage or disease. Our very own pest
controller — our 12-year old daughter Tessa — has been hard at work under the nets, removing every single animal or avian pest. The pheasants, sparrows, rabbits and hares don’t stand a chance with her on the hunt!” From their one-and-a-half
hectares, Natalie and Warrick Edwards hope to pick five tonnes of pinot noir grapes and 10 tonnes of pinot gris. “With 15 to 20 pickers, the harvest will take a couple of days,” Natalie says. “It’s all handpicked to maintain the quality. There is nothing
more satisfying than hearing the sound of a bunch of grapes hitting the bottom of a plastic bucket.” Quality fruit means quality wine to come. “We have just cellared the 2018 pinot noir. The fruit last year was top quality too, so we can’t wait to hear our customers’ reactions to the wine when it is released in June.” Cross Hares has already made a mark with its wine at the NZ Wine Awards with bronze awards for their 2016 pinot gris and 2017 pinot noir. “A good start,” Natalie laughs. “But now I’m spurred on to do even better – nothing less than silver or gold.” For more information email sales@crosshares.nz. www.crosshares.nz

Unsurpassed medley of rotisserie delights If you seek evidence that Christchurch has come of age as a cosmopolitan melting pot with its own unique buzz, look no further than Cluck Cluck Slurp.
N
aturally at home in the Riverside Farmers’
Market, Cluck Cluck Slurp is the brainchild of Joe Ye (of
Chinese descent), Madlen Shaw (German born) and Wayne
Shaw (Kiwi boy), and it offers an unsurpassed medley of rotisserie delights from a state-of-the-art German Rotisserie, together with ramen dishes to die for. The Cluck Cluck is created by rotisseried free-range organic chicken from New Zealand’s own Bostocks and is available whole, quarter and half, in meals, sandwiches and salads, and is joined by a rare breed of pork from the soon-to-be organicrated Burnham Oak. This winter Madlen is introducing German specialty rotisseried pork knuckles which when added to a cool pilsner, forms a match made in heaven. Slurp enters the picture with the ramen bowls. With the aim of running as a zerowaste operation, the ramen broth is made from the bones of the chicken and pork. Food arrives at speed so you don’t spend your precious lunch hour waiting. Your Friday night takeaways go vibrant and chic with just chicken, chicken with roast potatoes, with salad or with fries, and you can book office lunches to go or inquire about on-site catering options. full traceability, so customers know where the hemp grew, was processed and the products it is going into. Brad’s favourite from The Brothers Green range is the Hempy Bar – a snack bar you can buy at New World and PAK’nSAVE supermarkets nationwide. “Containing 17 percent hemp, it is way ahead of any other hemp bar and it demonstrates the possibility of hemp,” Brad says. The bars come in choc coconut and choc berry. Plant-based, nut-free, no refined sugar, vegan, and gluten-free, they fit well with low carb and keto eating at 30 percent protein, 40 percent fat, no sugar and low carb. Hemp is high in omega 3, fibre, magnesium, potassium, iron and zinc, appealing to flexitarians reducing animal proteins. Containing all 20 amino acids, the packaging is all homecompostable. Agriculturally this crop is spray-free, harvests in less than five months and requires little water, so tie some hemp into your life.

Add an extra of egg and bacon and this fan favourite can’t be topped. For a real comfort food fix, his grandma’s oldfashioned savoury mince on toast recipe brings back memories. Traditional deliciousness. The special twist is the soft poached egg on top. “A poke with a fork and it drizzles through the mince – divine,” Stu says. Corn fritters and bacon with the tangy house-made relish is simply delish any time of the day. Accompanied by golden

Decadent desserts in Church Corner There is no doubt the many new eateries opening up in the Christchurch city centre are attracting a considerable number of people into the central city. These newcomers have meant that established businesses outside the CBD have been struggling, even with the most loyal of customers.
P
atisserie YAHAGI in Upper Riccarton, which has been providing exquisite desserts and cakes since 2009, is one of these suburban businesses. The owner patissier, Eri Yahagi says, “Compared with newlyopened shops in the CBD, the atmosphere around our shop seems rather dim and old-fashioned. However, we believe that true dessert connoisseurs still make an effort to visit our shop.” To make the most of New Zealand’s summer, Eri sources high-quality sweet strawberries from a reliable strawberry farmer in Timaru to make delicious desserts. They include fresh cream gateaux with strawberries, strawberry Swiss rolls and the newest
creation – strawberry cup. The strawberry cup is composed of special strawberry mousse, finely chopped strawberries and sour cream mousse, lavishly decorated with sliced fresh strawberries. Eri remarks, “We can make these cups only when the strawberry farmer can supply us, meaning that they are strictly limited to the summer season. We really do recommend people come in and try our strawberry cakes before the warm weather ends!” Although Patisserie YAHAGI is hidden away in a tiny, old arcade in Church Corner at Upper Riccarton, it should definitely be one of the chief reasons to visit this part of town. www.patisserieyahagi.com/

What’s trending in textiles? Paula Wallace and her creative team at leading homewares brand Wallace Cotton find inspiration from nature in both New Zealand and around the world, translating this into luxurious and impeccably crafted bedlinen, homewares, sleepwear and accessories. We catch up with Paula, who is fresh from Europe’s international textile fairs, about her take on the leading trends for the cooler seasons.
Every year you visit the international textile fairs in Europe. What bedding and homeware trends did you see coming through? There are always a few trends flowing through the trade fairs, some of which are more relevant to our shores and our homes in New Zealand. We are seeing a real return to natural textures and organic fibres, plus some amazing recycled yarns are being developed for use in outdoor fabrics and rugs. A strong theme we were so pleased to see emerging is less wastage,
encouraging buyers to make more thoughtful choices about how we decorate our homes, with quality more important than price and fashion. In terms of colour trends; there is a shift from stone and grey tones to oatmeal tones as base neutrals, with gelato shades of mint, watermelon and lemon as highlight colours accenting warm whites. How much is New Zealand influenced by European design and interiors trends? Our light in New Zealand is quite different to Europe so the beautiful strong colours that we see in European interior ranges can look harsh in our sunlight. We tend to take those colours and tone them down, so the colour intent is there without blasting you out of the room or keeping you awake all night.
Who or what are you most influenced by? I am most affected by my emotional response to colour and texture, a good stripe combination will always catch my eye, and I regularly fall in love with beautiful painterly designs. Textiles can create emotional memories, and lovers of beautiful bed linen like myself and many of our customers often have large collections of textiles that they cannot bear to throw away. What’s the easiest way to transform a bedroom for autumn/winter? Colour can instantly create a change of mood in a room, so deep warm tones will make your bedroom feel cosier and comforting through winter. Easy additions and updates include adding colourful throws, delicious velvet quilts and cushions, beautiful printed bedlinen, or thick comforting textures. I think it’s important to create a space that feels comfortable and cosy and warm, somewhere you can feel safe to relax, unwind and recharge. Do you have a favourite product or print from this season’s collection? I have to say Amarante bedlinen is making me swoon this season, along with the beautiful rumply linen Kipling blankets and throws. www.wallacecotton.com Metropol 19 March, 2020 59
Why Greetings Still Matter
Is it just me, is it the times, is it the world or have I just been so busy I haven’t noticed how some of the deeply personal and simple practices of life are being overlooked? During a year in which we are prioritizing wellbeing and resilience in our company, I want to raise a flag for those that feel forgotten. It all starts with a greeting. Getting in the way, of course, is screen time, phone addiction and just an absence of plain, old-fashioned good manners; we’re often so distracted we simply don’t recognize or notice other people. I recently read about – and have witnessed personally – the following:
whole ‘conversations’ undertaken during a service/purchasing exchange where no words were even spoken, gestures making do whilst the purchaser stayed on the cell phone talking loudly. They could have been served by a robot, and maybe one day they will be, for all the humanity that occurred. Whether serving or being served, people matter. Invisibility when you are employed or engaged to do something matters. And if service and client experience count for anything, then communication and connection sit at the top of the must-do list. I expect everyone I work with and for to communicate their requirements. I can’t guess them, even though I sometimes try. Real estate is a service industry with a great deal of emotion and money at stake. The best in the industry are hardwired to connect in an empathetic and
knowledgeable way. Not communicating is not acceptable, and I’m not even referring to response times. I’m meaning response, full-stop. Of all the feedback we get from clients, lack of communication sits at the very top of the list when it comes to unwelcome issues. Where we start is as important as where we end, so greet people properly – greet when you meet, eyes direct, hands out (obviously pre-Coronavirus) and smiling. You will stand out, I can assure you, and if you are looking for a realtor and they don’t do this well, keep looking.

The dusky earth tones of this calm space, mixed with the natural fibres and wood tones, make it feel as though you’ve just stepped into an airy, cool, luxury lodge after a trek through the desert or savannah. It’s the kind of look that keen travellers, or those who dream of travelling, can have at home as a reminder of exotic destinations. Based mostly around an African aesthetic, it can be easily adapted to echo other cultural motifs and colours.
T
he rich dark brown vertical stripe, painted in Resene Route 66, gives the wall a focal point and echoes the colour of the fireplace. Resene Grey Olive is used on the upper left part of the wall, with Resene Napa on the right. Resene Earthen runs across the lower part of the wall, made more striking by the vertical stripe of the wonderfully warm Resene Route 66, also used on the fireplace. The whole look is literally grounded in Resene Quarter Spanish White. The lighter floor cools off the whole space, highlighting the warmer shades and preventing them from becoming oppressive.

The Robinson family wanted a forever home that had it all – functionality, space and loads of storage with its own special signature. After a two-year house hunt and realising building was the answer, Emma and Logan researched wisely and chose Daryl from DJ Hewitt Builders, who also helped choose the best section. The 926sqm site of an old villa in St Albans was perfect. Now the high-pitched roofline and random-width cedar and plaster exterior, blends with the street’s historic homes. “We have two young children so we needed a place to grow with us,” Emma says of the four-bedroom, 296sqm O’Neil Architecture-designed home. Looking through to the lounge and garden from the front door exudes eternal space. A cavity slider meets at the media room and kitchen/dining corner, sitting flush with the ground-level kwila deck. The kids run from lounge to lawn and play cricket or pick homegrown veges and the open pantry leads out to the herb garden. “Daryl helped us find cost-effective options where we needed them and had solutions for everything. Tara, his wife, was so helpful as our Interior Consultant, with lots of little pearls of wisdom. I always wanted

a blue front door, and she suggested changing the aluminium joinery colour to suit, rather than going for our choice for the rest of the house – she was absolutely right.” For family functionality, a cloakroom resides beside the entrance with an adjacent storage wall. Other space luxuries are a large laundry, linen cupboard and under-stair storage. The suntrap alcove with a large inbuilt window seat and library shelving is an inviting and much-admired spot. “A key reason to build was to have a warm, dry house so we included underfloor and centrally-ducted heating.” The upstairs bedrooms have separate temperature controls, with sensor lights for the bathroom and stairwell. The master bedroom has an ensuite at the entrance, then a large walk-in robe incorporates a recessed stepladder leading to useful attic storage. “The people who worked onsite and in DJ Hewitt’s office were outstanding; always really helpful and professional, nothing was ever a problem. The after sale service has been superb, with clear communication every step of the way and they’ve kept following up with everything.” “We are so happy with the result – we will never move from here!”

Sustainable Chic By Jess Murray
We’re all about sustainability right now and, as society gravitates towards more eco-friendly lifestyles, we become more ecologically conscious and knowledgeable about the products we fill our houses with and their longer-term use – not just in function, but also in form. Welcome to the ‘Green Age’.

Bonkers for bamboo: This material is often labelled as the fastest-growing plant on earth, which results in it also acquiring the attribute of being highly sustainable. This is a material that can be used for almost anything around the home such as flooring, cabinets, lightshades and even outside furniture. Just be sure to get good quality bamboo from a sustainable factory, as it’s not always the sturdiest material.
B.
Grow up: Plants are the reason we’re able to provide oxygen to our lungs. So why not get closer to the source? Adding houseplants to your home will improve the quality of the indoor air and constantly remind you that we have to nurture nature so that it can do the same for us.
A bright idea: It’s hard to believe that something as simple as switching your lightbulbs could be a stepping stone to making your home more sustainable. Well, believe it. Energy-efficient lightbulbs are the way to go moving forward. They’re costeffective and long-lasting. It might be time for you make the switch.

Creating the perfect home just for you
By Jess Murray
Sustainability and eco-consciousness may be the hottest buzzwords of 2020, but neither of these concepts require significant time and resource. In fact, simply by swapping ‘this’ for ‘that’, you can help your home tread more lightly on the earth.
Beeswax buzz: Say no to single-use plastic wrap and instead opt for an alternative option – beeswax food wraps. They are the big thing in food preservatives right now (everyone’s buzzing about it… including the bees). The wraps are reusable, biodegradable and are oh so awesome in this war on plastic. The last straw: On the topic of fighting against plastic, we have our next suggested swap – a stainless steel drinking straw. While the internet has somewhat turned these items in a joke about purely ‘saving the turtles’, that’s not their sole reason for being produced. Stainless steel straws = a sustainable solution.
Carry on: A plastic bag is a rare find these days – especially at the supermarket. But that doesn’t mean you should be a balancing act trying to carry everything in your arms back to your car. Buy a few reusable shopping bags then store them near your car keys after use, so you remember to put them back! A one trick pony: Paper towels are a single-use product. Once they’re wet, it’s sayonara. The answer is simple – washable dishrags. Something to smile about: Dentists recommend that you should change your toothbrush every two to three months. If those said toothbrushes are plastic… that’s not good for Mother Earth. Bamboo alternatives are great because they’re biodegradable. Lose the lightbulbs: A simple light switch is needed for your home to become one step closer to being eco-conscious. LED bulbs are a much better options and once again easy on the power bill.
Light the way: Rather than fumbling around for the light switch on your way to the bathroom during the night, use the light from your window. Yes… you’re correct, it is dark at night. But we’re referring to the light during the day that will charge your solar powered nightlight. Not to mention, it’s also helpful to the power bill too. Second lease on life: Judging from the lead into this, the next suggestion is selfexplanatory: but why not buy items secondhand such as clothing, furniture, electronics or even books? Not only is it cost efficient, but it’s also sustainable. That makes it a winwin. Say yes to soap bars: Rid yourself of the plastic containers that most body washes come in. Instead opt for a solid soap bar. Worried about it not lasting long enough? Buy a soap holder to ensure that it dries in between uses.

Hung up… on plastic: How annoying is it when you go to hang something on the washing line and your plastic peg snaps? This can all be avoided with the transition to metal pegs! They won’t rust and they last much longer.

Sweet like chocolate By Jess Murray
Velvety tones of chocolate and caramel create a delicious bedroom retreat that is perfect for autumn. You won’t want to leave the comforts of your cocoon, as these cool combinations will give you Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory vibes (before things began to turn pear-shaped).
W
e’ve come up with ways to drizzle these tones into your sleeping quarters that’ll make you want to lick your lips. Colour of choice: Cocoacoloured walls are trending right now. Not only do they serve as a great backdrop for bold and bright colours but should you choose to go the opposite way and pair it with softer tones, the result is welcoming a feeling of comfort into your bedroom. It’s all in your head(board): Thinking about adding a bit more oomph or oh la la to your bedroom? Try investing in a headboard (or if you’re feeling daring, try DIY). Why not try adding one in a chocolate shade? While it might resemble a chocolate bar, it’s the perfect
bedroom centrepiece for those with a sweet tooth. A match made in heaven: If you fall in love with the headboard, the addition of matching bedside tables might be just what you need to take your bedroom to the next level. Tempting textures: Master bedroom paint colours set the mood of the space, whether that’s invigorating or calming and, when it comes to the bedroom, it’s the latter you’re going to be seeking. The beauty of brown tones is they do just that, brown is after all, a neutral. That doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Texture is a way to give ivory, taupe, grey, or tan a boost. Choose a glossy paint or add a shimmery or opalescent paint finish. Complete with velvet throws and coarse rugs.

re-upholstered, but he kept pieces of the original fabric as inserts because he wanted to retain the connection to his own grandfather.” When Abigail was given the chair, she wanted to restore it again. “Respecting my grandfather’s sentiment towards the original fabric, I too have chosen to keep that material and will have it made into cushions. I love the look of the restored chair, but most importantly it represents for me the history of my family, the connection I have to my ancestors and the precious memories I have of my grandparents. “I have a photo of them next to the chair in my lounge and it feels like they are here with me and present in my everyday life. This provides me with a physical sense of connection. I feel honoured to be the guardian of this chair until it’s time for me to pass it to a future generation.” If you, like Abigail, have furniture in need of restoration, enquiries are welcomed at McDonald and Hartshorne, phone 03 371 7500.
Growing a passion It’s obvious he is a consummate plantsman down to the very tips of his fingers. Managing Director of Kiwiflora Nurseries, near Templeton, Nalin Gooneratne grew up in Sri Lanka on his grandparents’ tea, coffee and pepper plantation. That heritage and link to the earth and the environment led Nalin to his career in commercial horticulture in New Zealand.
“A
fter gaining my Diploma in Horticulture from Lincoln I did an internship with
the University of Minnesota – rather different conditions from New Zealand there,” he says.
“But next I spent a number of years working for a large Canterbury nursery
developing my knowledge about the Canterbury climate, which can be quite challenging for tree selection.” Those years of learning honed Nalin’s depth of knowledge and when the opportunity came to purchase Kiwiflora Nurseries, he was ready to move out on his own. “This nursery has been something of a hidden gem, tucked away off State Highway 1. My vision is to grow it as a strong player in the industry with an emphasis on the quality of our service, advice and product. I want to impart to my customers my passion for planting trees and shrubs that will perform 365 days a year – not just plants that are the fashionable flavour of the month.” Nalin says there are many forgotten plants, both native and exotic, that are suitable for growing in Canterbury and he is on a mission to reinvigorate interest in them. What’s flourishing in the gardening world in 2020? From supersized houseplants to 80s flower inspiration, we give you the rundown on some of the coolest gardening developments expected to blossom over the coming year.
1.
Super-sized species 2020 – the year of the houseplant? It’s no surprise that these indoor beauties are top of the list, but this year sees super-sized greenery take centre stage in many homes. Forget the small decorative plants and modest, lonely aloe vera – it’s all about bigger, bolder species. Increase the health benefits of greenery by making a statement with showstopping varieties like the giant-leafed alocasia, the deep green monstera and the fiddle-leaf fig. Don’t totally discount your miniature favourites, though – horticulturists predict 6-9cm plants will remain popular.
2.
Grow-your-own Your garden should always be a place of peace and purpose. With environmental welfare at the forefront of many minds, what better way to take advantage of your outdoor space than sustainably sourcing your own fruit and veges? Herbs, beans and peas are still high on the agenda this year, alongside highly nutritious microgreens, chillies, legumes and soybeans. Sit back and reap the rich rewards of a fruitful vege garden; like fresh organic food and a reduced weekly grocery spend – not to mention the satisfaction that comes with it. Add a creative touch to your food with edible flowers, flavour a cocktail with homegrown herbs or berries, or whip up a fresh vegetable salad, all with the fruits (literally!) of your labour.
3.
Bug-friendly backyards The new decade is all about being kind to wildlife thanks to growing concern over the catastrophic decline in insects and the overall impact of this on the environment. In 2020, overgrown gardens teeming with wildlife take the top spot over neatly manicured lawns, as gardeners ditch pesticides and promote pollination. Dubbed ‘rewilding’, the trend has sparked interest in outdoor spaces with a more natural aesthetic, which incorporate eco-friendly gardening concepts such as bee hotels, wildlife ponds, log piles, pollen-rich plants and compost heaps. Plastic-free gardening is also a hot topic; consider using compostable plant pots made from rice husk and sustainable wood and bamboo fibres over wasteful black plastic ones.
4.
80s flower power The wild and beautiful blooms of the 80s are having a well-deserved revival with nemesias and diascias front of the line. Not only do these pretty flowers offer a compact size, long flowering period and sweet scent that attracts bees and butterflies, they’re also incredibly flexible supporting plants that can be grown at the edge of any basket, bed or pot. Expect to see a wider range of these beauties as new breeding programmes produce sensational colour schemes such as ‘berries and cream’.

INTRINSIC ELEGANCE IN FENDALTON

In a state of evolution, the Garden City’s architectural typology is nothing short of distinct. New building facades are playing with eye catching angles, colours and materials – a welcome digression from the archetypal concrete and stone buildings previously adopted in the city, as we usher in a new era of urban architecture.

We all know climate change is the biggest environmental issue facing our planet, so what changes can we make locally to make a difference globally? Some people have chosen to make their contribution by switching to electric vehicles (EVs). While these aren’t a new invention, today’s versions continue to evolve due to significant technological developments. In fact, automaker Volvo says half of its vehicles will be electric by 2025; Ford says a third of its offering will be electric by 2030. Hopefully, as EVs become more mainstream, the pricing will also become more affordable. In Ōtautahi, more than half of our carbon emissions come from transportation, so a switch to EVs is another way in which we can help reduce greenhouse emissions. Combined with the fact that 85 percent of our electricity is renewable, the sustainability story behind EVs continues to evolve. The Chamber is working in partnership with Orion to offer businesses the opportunity to test drive one of the latest EVs for a week, the new Hyundai Kona. The initiative has been so popular that the vehicles are already booked well into 2021. Orion is also installing vehicle chargers across the region, keeping EV users close to plug-in sources – we even have one in our Chamber carpark! This complements Energy and Resources Minister Megan Woods’ recent announcement about the EECA Low Emission Vehicles Contestable Fund, which is investing to help establish a network of over 1000 EV charging stations nationwide.

A new decade and a fresh feel is evident in the Christchurch real estate market as we continue our march into 2020. I love this city, it’s my hometown and I’m excited about our future, our growth, and the variation of design that has started to occur in numerous suburbs and streets. The definitive market drivers include lower than usual numbers of listings – 1906 listings in January 2019 and 1459 in January 2020 (realestate.co.nz stats) and this is pre-empting an increase in the number of auctions being requested, conducted and sold. Historically this occurs when vendors feel they can capitalize on the competitive attentions of buyers limited for choice. I note Christchurch median house prices provided by REINZ also demonstrated an 8.1 percent increase over the January period proving a seasonal win for vendors, some of whom have waited a while to see the benefits of a market favourable to them. Heading gently into autumn has yet to indicate a change in the current market but with 25 years of experience I’ve never seen a property cycle that didn’t continue to change or adjust to local and national conditions. I’m also noticing an increase in the nature of property investment as interest rates refuse to provide many with the comfort or growth they’re looking for and this opens up significant opportunities in the months ahead. No doubt I’ll continue to discuss this further.

International Women’s Day just passed and I’m thinking about why it’s hard to get a long list together of female startup founders in Christchurch. The scarcity of female founders is a global issue and to appreciate the size of the problem here’s a few stats to consider: 83 percent of all venture capital investment goes to all-male founder teams, 12 percent goes to mixed gender teams and only a tiny four percent goes to all-female teams. We also know that investor teams are mostly male. In the UK, 48 percent of VC teams are all-male with only 13 percent having a female senior executive. The majority of startups attracting capital are technology-based and fewer than 26 percent of tech employees are women. Attitudes to risk differ amongst the sexes, with men showing as more pro-risk than women. High growth startups are inherently risky so maybe an aversion to risk is also one of the factors for why female founders are rarer than male. But companies with female leaders are 12 percent more profitable than their counterparts. We also know that, according to Pew Research, women are 34 percent better at working out compromises and 34 percent more likely to be honest and ethical. Whether the problem is unconscious bias, lack of representation in ‘startup’ sectors, or gender profiles, we must get behind our female founders and give them the connections and opportunity they need to level up and, in doing so, benefit us all.

I remember the Commonwealth Games in 1974. I was a young teenager and the city was abuzz with excitement. I can still remember the song: We’ve got to join together, let our laughter fill the air It’s time for every race and creed to throw away their every care Let sport unite us all as one in the spirit of the lord above And let us all remember The games are for the fostering of peace and love Never would I have imagined 45 years later that the spirit of these words would be invoked in response to an atrocity such as we experienced on 15 March last year. Although we will never forget the 51 people whose lives were taken, our memory of that time will always include the way we ‘joined together’. We stood side-by-side regardless of ‘race or creed’. We were ‘united as one’, and the ‘fostering of peace and love’ was made real. This act, which was inspired by hatred and was designed to divide us and tear us apart, instead united us with all our communities and embraced us in compassion and love. The words of our Prime Minister and that of our local Muslim community leaders, who spoke of peace, love, compassion, unity and forgiveness, helped us through this time. In a time of crisis, this is what the world needs to see and hear, and that’s what makes Christchurch such a special place.

On a recent Saturday morning, walking to the Canterbury Earthquake Memorial service, I was struck by the importance of ‘people spaces’ to our central city. A space like Worcester Boulevard, which existed before the quakes, connects the river and city centre at one end with the Christchurch Art Gallery, Museum, Botanic Gardens and the Arts Centre. On this mild, Saturday morning it was bustling with visitors and locals alike, many bound for Electric Avenue. Along the Avon River Precinct, people were sitting on the leafy inclines of the riverbank. On the adjacent City Promenade, which is probably the most popular amenity we have completed to-date, a steady flow of cyclists, pedestrians and joggers were making use of this pleasant new central thoroughfare. Heading upstream, I started to hear the buzz of the vibrant new Riverside Market, where happy diners were enjoying brunch in the sun on the seating that spills out onto the Promenade. Contrast that with the sombre but serene feeling of the Canterbury Earthquake Memorial, where I was honoured to place a wreath. Together with the grassy, treelined north bank side of the memorial, this is a great space to both sit and reflect, and for our city to host large, commemorative events. My team at Ōtākaro is really proud of these ‘people spaces’ we are building in central Christchurch. Clearly these places, where we get to experience the whole gamut of emotions, are important to us.

As this issue goes to print, we are due to release the latest Quarterly Economic Report, a key metric used to track our economy and focus our own programme of work. We aim to build and maintain a future-focused economy that raises the standard of living for residents. A key way we drive economic growth is attracting business events to the city. We recently launched a new brand to do this – Business Events Christchurch – a partnership between Tourism New Zealand, Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre and ChristchurchNZ’s Convention Bureau. Our city is primed to host large-scale business events with world-class venues, a humming business community, and a deep pool of expertise in our universities and public sector. Another driver of economic growth are the city’s existing strengths helping to future-proof our economy. We have worked with local industry and education experts to create our Supernodes initiative – areas of sustainable growth and high-value employment. We’re working to attract talent in these areas, build career pathways and foster collaboration, and we’re looking forward to sharing more on this soon. And there is little doubt IKEA’s recent announcement about opening a store in Ōtautahi Christchurch spurred excitement among our residents, and should create numerous jobs in the city. We continue to drive economic growth during these exciting times for the city. We are well and truly regaining our status as a major New Zealand urban centre.

True design and build In the home building industry, offering a complete design and build service can be an attractive marketing tool, but whether a company can actually deliver is another matter. Craig Freeman, Director of David Magill Builders says you need to look behind the glossy websites and smooth commentary to discover if a company really ‘walks its talk’.
T
he team at David Magill Builders offers design and build in its purest form, demonstrating upfront transparency, true flexibility and an unbeatable ‘can-do’ attitude that puts the client ahead of business. Flexibility lies at the core of a true design and build service; to earn the title it must be about making ideas into reality in the way the client wants it to happen. “While we have strong relationships with local designers specialising in every type of home, we happily work
with your chosen designer and products you like. We also have our own highly skilled, longstanding sub trades, but can work with contacts and resources that you might have, as long as their standards match ours. It’s a point of difference that we are very proud of!” Brought to every detail of each project is Craig’s legendary attitude. “I challenge others saying ‘it can’t be done’ – we disregard reasons not to and through lateral thinking we zero in on how we can get it done,” Craig says.
So intent is Craig that he will engineer solutions himself. “Bespoke is more than a word; it’s being able to do it. We make it in the workshop or on-site using hand tools – and if you are not doing that you are not true design and build.” The craftsmanship skills gained from ‘old school’ carpentry experience has bridged the gap between old and modern high-tech systems; resulting in some impressive ingenuity in design and build – often only seen in architectural homes.
For one owner, a copper front door was a heart’s desire. Difficulty in product supply resulted in Craig and his team custom making it in-house for a fraction of the cost. Meanwhile an existing house with a double stud height lounge room was designed to have a circular mezzanine floor added to create a library space. The engineering plans specified an octagon with a circle inside – an ‘outside the square’ request. An expensive continuous circular 100mmdeep beam was required, so Craig made it in-house, drawing the beam on his steel bench, calculating the dimensions, dividing the circumference into six individual pieces, making a form in the workshop to press the laminates together, cutting and fitting the pieces, before fixing the beam on site. The end result: another very happy client. Now that’s design and build! www.davidmagill.co.nz

EXPANDING YOUR LIVING SPACES T
Now is the perfect time to protect your outdoor space and put the plans in place to extend your summer.
he expert team at Stratco has the skills to help you create a space that can be enjoyed throughout the year, with its own range of unique verandas and louvres – from design to installation. “View our range online or visit us at our showroom to see what we can do for your outdoor space,” Stratco General Manager David Allingham says. A Stratco Outback® Verandah, Louvre or Carport provides protection from the elements, expands your possibilities for entertaining and storage or an all-weather play area for kids. “A veranda not only adds functional living space and value to your home but provides protection from New Zealand’s harsh weather conditions. Our fixed-roof verandas offer an affordable alternative to our louvres. It’s a proven product with quality design – they’ve been around for years and there is no other product like this on the market.” Whether you are building a new home or making extensions, by letting light into your outdoor area while blocking out harmful rays and rain, homeowners are able to get so much more function from their home. The company offers a bespoke veranda which can be custom designed and built
to suit your size, layout and attachment requirements. “We manufacture and install the units ourselves, so we can really customise them to suit each space. They are ideal as either attached or standaalone units, and the addition of Stratco’s polycarbonate Outback Rooflite™ panels allows the supply of filtered light to the underside of the veranda.” Another option is the Stratco Louvre. Controlled via a remote, Stratco’s systems also include a rain sensor as standard, so, if you are not home when it starts to rain, the unit will close automatically. Like the verandas, the louvres are ideal as either an attached or stand-alone unit and, if you want to add louvres to an existing veranda, the team can retrofit a louvre system into most veranda/pergola frames – just request a free site measure to determine the finer details. From concept to finished product, Stratco’s louvre systems can be in place six weeks from the order date. Once the unit is measured at your home, the team runs each unit through an engineering programme, designed to confirm strength of system to suit your wind zone. The company can also provide fencing and sheds, whatever you choose – the process is simple. Steve Cain, Outdoor Product Specialist at Stratco, will talk through the possibilities with you, and then measure and quote, which is free with no obligation. Stratco then designs, manufactures and installs the products themselves – making the entire experience hassle-free. e’ve hunted out all the upcoming developments and cool things happening around town to get you excited about the year to come – we weren’t short of inspiration! Christchurch Hospital Acute Services Building: If you haven’t been into the CBD and seen this colossal 10-storey building creeping up in size near the Christchurch Women’s Hospital, then you may need to look again. This gigantic project has been in construction since 2015 and, as the largest government project in Canterbury coming in at 62,000 square metres, it’s easy to see why this is such a big deal for the city – literally and figuratively! It’s set to throw open its doors later this year. Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre: The Convention Centre, scheduled to open in October this year, will provide the facilities we’ve been lacking since its predecessor was demolished in early 2012. Supported by accommodation, retail, hospitality and public transport, it is set to be world-class and it’s certainly got the look down pat; the braided river façade of the new building is already the talk of the town. With 43,000 herringbone tiles set to be installed on the building… no wonder it’s popping into conversation here and there.
The South Frame: This project is in construction stage, with around three quarters of it already now complete. Ōtākaro Ltd describes the site as “a place for markets, events and celebrations – an area to gather, dine, be entertained or just relax”. The Greenway will be at the heart of this project, providing an oasis in between the hustle and bustle of city life. 3D interactive visualiser: With all these new developments, you might be keen to look back on just how much this city has evolved in the few years following the earthquake. The Christchurch City Council can help you do that with their ‘3D interactive visualiser of the CBD’. Not only can you view the buildings we lost during the quake, but you can also see the revival and emergence of the new CBD. It really puts into perspective just how far we’ve come in such a short time. Canterbury Multi-Use Arena: Labelled a ‘game-changer’ for the city, the multi-use arena will help Christchurch re-establish itself as New Zealand’s sporting and cultural capital. The 25,000-seat arena is set to come in at $472 million to build. A small(ish) price to pay to transform Christchurch into a super-host for major sporting and cultural events.

he former Wellington Woollen Mills building at 96 Lichfield Street and the Design and Arts College building at 116 Worcester Street have each received $600,000 toward their multimillion-dollar repairs and refurbishments. Christchurch City Council staff had recommended $900,000 for each building, but with only $1.2m left in the heritage grant kitty for this year, councillors decided against dipping into next year’s $1.5m budget, instead opting to cap the amount at $600,000 each. Both properties are classed as ‘Highly Significant’ buildings in the Christchurch District Plan. Dating back to the 1930s, the former State Insurance building in Worcester Street was designed by renowned architect Cecil Wood, in association with Paul Pascoe. It has art deco influences and was first used as offices for the State Fire and Accident Insurance Company and for the Lands and Survey and Lands and Deeds Departments. The building was damaged in the earthquakes but has changed hands since then. The new owners – 116 Worcester
Street Ltd – have plans to fully upgrade it and restore this golden oldie’s historic façade, including the original coat of arms. Its new use will be for living and rental accommodation. The second notable building is the former Wellington Woollen Mills building, a category 1 historic building in Lichfield Street, which dates back to 1920. It was designed by architect William Gummer, whose firm Gummer and Ford, was responsible for many significant buildings around New Zealand including the Auckland Railway Station and the former National Art Gallery and Museum in Wellington. Designed in a pared-down classical style, it was one of the first commercial buildings in Christchurch to feature glass curtain walling. Currently hiding behind scaffolding and mesh, the new funding will be a welcome addition in the process of breathing life back into the building. The new owners (Wool House Investments Ltd) hope to both repair and upgrade the structure. The Central City Landmark Heritage Grant Funding Scheme was set up by the council after the earthquakes to help owners retain, repair and strengthen the central city’s remaining historic buildings. To date, grants of more than $13.5 million have been made to 12 different heritage restoration projects. The heritage grants for the two buildings have been granted on the condition that full conservation covenants are registered against the property titles.

END OF AN EQ ERA By Jess Murray
IT’S THE END OF AN EARTHQUAKE ERA; THE SITE THAT WAS USED TO SORT THROUGH THE MATERIAL FROM BUILDINGS THAT WERE DAMAGED OR DEMOLISHED AFTER THE EARTHQUAKES IS BEING TRANSFORMED INTO A RECREATION AREA.
F
inal landscaping plans are being drawn up so that the Burwood Resource Recovery Park can be incorporated into neighbouring Bottle Lake Forest Park by early 2022. The Burwood Resource Recovery Park was established after the earthquakes to sort through the vast volumes of construction and demolition waste from across Christchurch. As much of the waste as possible has been recycled but that which could not be re-used remains on the site. Material from sites where there was a loss of life in the 22 February 2011 earthquakes is also stored at the park but kept separately. Christchurch City Council plans to engage with quake victims’ families later this year on how the sensitive material will be dealt with long-term. In the meantime, the majority of the Burwood Resource Recovery Park is being readied for its transition to a recreation site and about 35,000 native plants have already been planted in the area. “When the landscaping work is completed we will have an additional recreation area that will include walking tracks, mountain bike tracks and areas for bird watching,” Council Solid Waste Manager Ross Trotter says. “It will offer some great scenic views of the Kaikoura Ranges and the Canterbury foothills, so it will be a good addition to the Bottle Lake Forest Park.”

T
he word ‘style’ is key here because Tony van der Plas and his team at Timber Tru create bespoke, made-to-order kitchens. “We make exactly what clients require,” Tony says. “We can help with the concept and design if clients ask for this, or we can work with their plans. Every one of our kitchens is different and clients really love the exclusivity.” Timber may be in their name but don’t be fooled into thinking that Timber Tru works only with this material when it comes to kitchens. “We can work with any material clients want – from veneered timber, to plywood or melamine. It all depends on personal choice and budget. We can also organise the benchtops and all the hardware, as well as
installing the kitchen.” All joinery is made on site at Timber Tru’s workshop. “To build and install a quality kitchen takes between three to six weeks and quality is of the utmost importance to us.” Quality extends to all the other work carried out by Timber Tru’s craftsmen. They make joinery for laundries and bathrooms; they make timber windows and doors and they can also do commercial joinery for schools or shop fitouts. “One service we offer is ‘house lots’ – the joinery required for all the rooms of a house. That certainly saves clients a good deal of time and effort.” To request a free consultation, phone 03 389 2986 or email Tony at tony@timbertru.co.nz. www.timbertru.co.nz

will be able to create their own walking and cycling loops as they explore the area,” the Mayor says. “Installing a landing at Dallington will also enable people to connect and interact with the Ōtākaro Avon River on a much more personal level.” As outlined in the Regeneration Plan that the Council approved, the footbridges and Dallington landing will form part of a 350-hectare “Green Spine” running the length of the Ōtākaro Avon River from the city to the sea. It will eventually consist of seven riverside landings, formed and unformed walking and cycle trails, and regenerating native forest. “With the Global Settlement between the Council and Crown finalised, this grant, together with funding outlined in the Long Term Plan, means we can start the regeneration of the Green Spine in earnest,” the Mayor says. The Council also received a $1 million Appeal Trust grant for the restoration of the Thomas Edmonds Band Rotunda, along with funding towards many other well-deserving local projects. Here’s to hoping that the ‘red zone’ turns into a ‘green zone’.

A guide to helping your mates Got a mate who’s looking down, isn’t themselves, maybe gone a bit quiet? Want to help but aren’t sure how?

ite Safe has created a new pocket guide about how to have conversations about mental health which has great advice on looking after friends and colleagues. Christchurch carpet and vinyl installer Paul Lynch lost his brother Brett to suicide in 2013. It took him a while to shake off resulting anger and darkness that he felt, but he did, and he wrote the book Suicide; Aftermath & Beyond about it. He has made it his mission to help people in the trades talk about things that are getting them down, and he says the new guide is a top tool to do this. “In my experience in about 99 times out of a hundred, all that’s required is a conversation. It’s that simple act of letting people talk or share something they might be going through. www.sitesafe.org.nz
Intrinsic Elegance In Fendalton Intrinsic elegance characterises the twin town houses at 18 and 20 Fendalton Road, designed by Jorgen Andersen at Arthouse Architects. “The design is classically Christchurch, a strong gable form that achieves an aesthetic that places the houses at home in the city,” Jorgen says.

e then softened the outline by using three different pitches in the gables which lends a draping effect over the garage pavilion. The colour palette chosen is a traditionally crisp Christchurch black and white.” With a ‘lock and leave’ concept in mind, the two houses, which are not identical but similar, are low maintenance in Integra Rockcote and ‘tray’ roofing. Vertical dark stained cedar is used low to be easily accessible for maintenance and louvres add a depth to
the façade. “We’ve chosen great hardwearing materials but broken the mass, playing with the terrace house idea – they have wonderful street presence as a pair,” Jorgen says. The principle of functionality was exercised throughout: high ceilings and light oak floors plus a minimised need for corridors ensure there is as much space as possible in a modest footprint. Original trees on the berm in front add ambience both looking in and looking out, “And they read differently

We find a team approach brings the best success,” Jorgen says. “We work frequently with Form Builders. We find they are always looking ahead, are solutionfocused and are great at
addressing small issues, which ensures they never become big issues.” Form Builders has been working in Christchurch since 2008. “We really pride ourselves on the strong bonds that we have within our Christchurch community, including subcontractors like Design Windows, employees, local
sports clubs and professionals like Arthouse Architects,” Director Matt Stevenson says. Collaboration is key to Form Builders also. The company believes that the client receives a higher quality and more functional home when the architect, builder and client work in unison from the beginning. “The two homes have been

seamless to build – working directly with the developers and architect from the beginning meant they have all been on the same page and worked together to create a great finished product,” Matt says. “Form Builders are proud to have been able to build two high end town houses to an exceptional quality within two years and believe this is due to great processes and collaboration from the beginning. With Design Windows’ exceptionally highquality products, along with such high level of customer service, working alongside them is a simple task. Design Windows are a core part of the Form Builders family and we cannot wait to continue to grow with them.” The windows in the homes are all by Design Windows. “They are skilled and professional; we work with them all over the country and there is a really nice continuity to that,” Jorgen says. “Again, it is a collaborative process that we like and they are a real go-to for bespoke projects.” The Design Windows team is delighted to have worked on the houses; the level of detailing provided by Arthouse means that little further discussion was required. Design Windows has been working with Form Builders for the past seven years, so each house could be run by a different foreman, with no impact at all. Form Builders works with its subtrades and their families to nurture relationships, making Form a tight-knit team. The goal is to work together to exceed clients’ expectations.
