My practical owners are in the throes of packing to move into their new home, but just so grateful for the 32 years spent at 227, they know she’s been a “bonnie on Clyde”. Brilliant architecture endures and John Trengrove has capitalised on the north facing 1137 square metres. Your inevitable improvements will dovetail into his ingenious design. The open plan kitchen/dining area is filled with all-day sun and adjoins a separate living room with a log burner, vaulted ceilings, and a view that cascades across the immaculate grounds. Multiple bedroom options which of course features a master with ensuite and walk-inrobe and additionally above the separate three car garage there is a living/bedroom area that is self-contained which would be ideal for family members who want to be close but not necessarily under the same roof or possibly a home office. This is a property that is hard to describe in words but in my 15 years in real estate, I feel somewhat qualified to say it is genuinely unique. Located in such a desirable area with all the amenities nearby and loaded to the gunnels with fantastic school zones being Fendalton Primary, Cobham Intermediate, Burnside High School, Christchurch Girls High and Christchurch

From the Editor Another fortnight has passed, along with the shortest day and some typically Canterbury winter weather. Four seasons in one day might easily be our current theme song, yet we still have much to be thankful for. All around the region innovative new and fledgling projects continue to develop housing, business and civil amenities to Christchurch and its satellite environs. This gradual growth brings many trickle-down bonuses to the local economy, the business sector and the people. The decade since the February 2011 earthquakes has shown the strength of Canterbury and the innovativeness of those who call it home. Investment capital and entrepreneurial talent flows towards economies with sensible regulatory policies, many of which are in evidence in Christchurch.

Certification provides assurance the paper we use is from sustainably managed forests; a forest that will be around for generations to come.
Of course, it is not all new developments rising from the ashes. Many standout projects feature renovations or preservations of heritage buildings which have long been a part of the region’s character. Some of those feature in the annual heritage awards, further on in this issue. Others succumbed to the forces of nature yet live again in model and reimagined form, adding to the striking urban architecture for which the Garden City is fast gaining an international reputation. The same may be said for the Metropol Circulation many artistic murals gracing walls throughout the city, one of which features in this issue. They too are adding to its growing cosmopolitan reputation, drawing visitors here and helping to grow the economy. freedom, and the result was an exciting, everchanging place that attracted artists and viewers alike.” Although Christchurch’s street art has been noticed globally, the part urban art plays in the rebuild will decide whether this reputation will stand the test of time. “If we really want to be internationally renowned, wall owners should commission credible artists, limit the creative restraints, and trust they will create a great piece of art.” The peach is a seasonal fruit, and Wilson explains that this represents the changes the city has undergone. A city destroyed gave artists the way to create an urban art gallery, but as the city regenerates this newfound identity is at risk of being lost, he believes. “As the city rebuilds, there is a concern we’ll lose the reputation. The key difference now is that the city isn’t a blank canvas and the developers rightfully want to control what is going onto the beautiful new buildings. Street art is about freedom of speech and if the artists are controlled too tightly, it loses the essence of what makes it exciting.” Time will tell if the vibrant colours and carefully selected subject matter give Christchurch a long-lasting international street art reputation.
Marking time with the devil After Narropera Trio’s afternoon performances of Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, the Trio now turns its attention to another great work, Carl Maria von Weber’s brilliant opera, Der Freischütz (The Devil’s Marksman).
A
s with the Mozart’s Figaro, Der Freischütz will be presented in two performances (July 25 and August 7) in The Golden Room of Lansdown(e) Homestead at 132 Old Tai Tapu Road (behind the Bicycle Thief Restaurant). Both performances begin at 3pm and finish at 4.30pm, as there is no interval. What links Mozart to Weber? Mozart’s wife, Constanze Mozart was Carl
Maria von Weber’s first cousin. Der Freischütz has been, and still is, many an opera-fan’s favourite opera. In the homestead’s beautiful miniature concert hall, Dorothee Jansen (soprano), Cathy Irons (violin) and Haydn Rawstron (narrations and piano) bring to life a wonderful story, into which are placed a dozen pieces of gorgeous music from the opera.

Can you elaborate more on the unrecognised honeys? Manuka has had the limelight for a while now. And no bad words against it, but we know New Zealand produces a range of native honeys worthy of some recognition (which we think taste better too). Kamahi, honeydew, pōhutukawa, rewarewa, the list goes on. We think it’s about time manuka moved over and shared the stage. WORDS JESS MURRAY PHOTOS ISABELLA GRIFFITHS
The beekeeping industry becoming increasingly unsustainable, matched with the rise in demand for alternative alcohols, alerted apiarist Wilbur Morrison and business marketing major Edward Eaton to a gap in the market. Metropol talks to the two self-starters to see what all the buzz is about.
Tell us a bit about Buzz Club’s token tipple. The kamahi with Hawke’s Bay lemon mead has natural fruity and floral flavours, a light honey nose, and a fresh citrus twist making it the perfect summer afternoon drop. So, what is Buzz Club’s point of difference in the beverage industry? Unlike beer, wine or cider, mead production results in extremely minimal waste. No pulp, mash, hops, skins or stems are left unused. Mead also bypasses the use of any fertilisers or pesticides in the production of the honey, being a direct result of the pollination of native environments. The mead industry relies on manpower over machine for honey production. This means less carbon is emitted during production and harvesting, and each keeper’s craftsmanship is reflected in their product. Currently we can trace our honey to geographical areas and we have also recently achieved 100% traceable honey, to ensure premium quality. We can’t wait to share this journey, right from the hive to the can.

What was the inspiration behind Buzz Club? Over 70 percent of New Zealand’s food production relies on pollination from bees, as do our 188 native plants. But due to low native honey prices, more keepers are leaving the industry and less of New Zealand is being pollinated. We modernise the world’s oldest alcohol (meal) to an extent unseen before and give unrecognised honeys a stage to stand on in one of the world’s fastest growing alcohol markets.

Nature inspired classy glass WORDS JULIA STRELOU
Masters in glassblowing and coldwork, Hamish Webster and Greg Swinburne have an exciting new combined display at Christchurch’s Form Gallery, on now until July 30.
W
e are holding only two glass exhibitions this year, and the other one was cast glass,” says gallery manager Ryan Dewsbury. “Compared to other art disciplines there are few glassblowers and the facilities are relatively scarce. With the added skill of coldwork, Greg’s and Hamish’s pieces make for unique work in this country,” he adds. Webster’s pieces, a mixture of colours and patterns, are reminiscent of the beauty that can be found in nature. He says that his inspiration comes from the environment and a childhood spent living rurally. Having grown up with dyslexia, Webster enjoys using art as way of
communicating and connecting with people. Swinburne’s exhibits represent a period of spiritual searching in his life. Many of his offerings and statues reflect this in the way they seem to be reaching for the heavens. All the pieces on display have been constructed by hand. Dewsbury explains: “Once the blown glass forms are completed, they are put, while still hot, in a kiln overnight. In the kiln, they cool down at a controlled rate to allow all stress to be relieved. When cold, the sculptures are cut with diamond tools and then there is the long and laborious job of grinding and polishing.”

fter more than two decades, the organising committee has decided the November event will be the grand finale. Held every two years, since its inception in 2000 it has raised more than $750,000 for Cholmondeley Children’s Home and shone a spotlight on dozens of
emerging artists. In 2019 it attracted more than 6000 attendees. The largest sculpture exhibition in the South Island, this year’s event will be held once again at Loudon Farm, Teddington, Banks Peninsula, with tickets available in October. Selection of this year’s sculptures is already underway, via a curatorial panel comprising of Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu Lead Curator Felicity Milburn, and manager/ curator at Ashburton Gallery, Shirin Khosraviani. Organising committee spokesman Ady Shannon says all work selected for the 2021 event will be eligible for the Sculpture on the Peninsula Award, and the $10,000 prize. Her last EP, Always Growing, is jam-packed with an exploration of sexuality, coming of age, mental health, and relationships. “I think a lot of issues in mental health stem from lack of communication. We need to be speaking more openly about experiences we go through so people can understand that they’re not alone in their experiences,” she says. “It can be really daunting as a young
person who’s trying to explore their sexuality or battle with mental health and feeling like you’re the only person in the world going through that experience.” One she knows all too well. “I’ve lost a family member due to lack of communication about their mental health and I think it’s important we learn to talk about it, and I want to be an example of that.” Paige also believes in the importance of representation in the industry because “All listeners and viewers can feel related
to, understood and, ideally, we’re making music for the public, and it’s important we include everybody.” The rising star recently announced her first-ever headline tour taking place this month at four locations, including Blue Smoke at The Tannery. What can concert-goers expect from the night? Lots of fun, new songs and the company of upcoming artists yet to make their debut on the music scene, says Paige. Tickets are still available for her July 23 Christchurch show from Moshtix.

Celebrating small Canterbury businesses innovating in hard times
Taking the scenic route Continual innovation has helped shape the Scenic Hotel Group, which traces its origins back to 1980.
T
oday the group is New Zealand’s largest locally owned and operated hotel group, setting high standards of
service, environmental and corporate responsibility, and leadership in the tourism industry. Innovation is a key
aspect of its business ethos. Brand and communications manager for the group, Kelly Watson says investigating and finding ways to improve service, staff and systems is ongoing and rewarding. The same passion for New Zealand, its landscape and its people that led to the group’s creation, drives it today. Scenic Hotel group offers Kiwis and visitors alike the chance to fall under the spell of the magical beauty of the country in comfort at one of its three and four-star properties spread across New Zealand. Head of the list are the Auckland-based Legacy Collection Airedale Boutique suites, or further afield the scenic Bay of Islands. In 2019 the Legacy Collection was created, a brand intended to house the group’s individual premium properties that each have their own story and legacy to share. Plans for expansion, both nationally and internationally, are ongoing. Visit the website below for a look at what the group has to offer. www.scenichotelgroup.co.nz

Q: What happens with stock at the time of sale? A: Stock is taken into account at the time of sale, usually at cost price, or using a formula agreed between Purchaser and Vendor. Sometimes the value of stock is added on to the asking price, but in general, stock is included in the price. The value of the stock can be determined by a stocktake just before takeover day, which can be jointly undertaken by Vendor and Purchaser. The parties may agree to appoint a Mediator to oversee the stocktake and assess stock quality and appropriate value. Stock included in a sale doesn’t normally include unsaleable or obsolete stock, both of which the Vendor should dispose of separately. The Agreement for Sale & Purchase of a Business has a mechanism for allowing for a percentage over or under a stock figure which can be paid for (or deducted). This is normally 10% but may be varied if required. There is usually the ability for a Vendor to adjust the stock to suit the expected purchase value, allowing for overs and unders. A Purchaser should remember that the stock will provide a profit for them when sold after Purchase.

Money matters People say that money is not the key to happiness, but I always figured if you have enough money, you can have a key made. JOAN RIVERS, AMERICAN TALK SHOW HOST
Nicole Hague
J
oan was right, but perhaps in a way she hadn’t intended. Chartered Accountant and Business Coach Nicole Hague and her team at NH + Associates help clients move to a place where they have financial security and options. If you have enough money, having a key made is one option, putting in a whole new door is another. “Being in an environment where we have choices and control our financial position is surely what we all want,” she says. Nicole and her team work with a wide range of clientele, helping them to see clearly, understand what they want in life and how to get there. “Some want more freedom, some feel lost without a road map to financial security and others just want to better understand specific elements of finance and running a business,” says Nicole. The NH + Associates team particularly enjoys working with like-minded female entrepreneurs to assist them in setting and achieving their goals. “We’re finding more people, especially women, don’t necessarily want loads of money or to maximise their income. Increasingly many of us want to be able to live comfortably, plan for the future and be able to spend quality time with family and friends,” says Nicole. NH + Associates finds that female business
entrepreneurs, aged between 24 and 54, are incredibly driven. They know what they want, and they are good at what they do, but can be so busy doing it, the planning is not as good as it should be. “We know business-people generally work incredibly hard, and women in particular manage so many things at the same time – at work and at home. Those with their own businesses wear many hats and some don’t realise that, for example, the CFO (chief financial officer) skill set is very specialised. We can help them with what they need to know. “Once a client can see the wood for the trees, understands, for example, how to manage cashflow better, is aware of all levers available to increase profit, is following a business plan; it’s very satisfying to see them re-energised and focused again. “Burnout is definitely the word of 2021 and we want to support you to avoid that from happening. Being brought up in an era of ‘girls can do ANYTHING’ has now morphed into ‘girls can do EVERYTHING’,” says Nicole. “Let us help give you a new perspective so you can shore up your future, which should be full of so many great options.” And a final message for Joan Rivers: Forget the key, get a key-code lock; no-one can ever find anything in the bottom of a handbag. www.nh-a.co.nz Metropol 8 July, 2021 23

The financial gender gap This may come as a surprise to many women, but there is a profound gender gap in financial literacy across OECD countries, including New Zealand.
T
his may come as a surprise to many women, but there is a profound gender gap in financial literacy across OECD countries, including New Zealand. Just 30% of women can be considered ‘financially literate’. Men appear to have statistically greater financial knowledge (source: www. oecd.org). We can, and need to, do better to ensure women are financially literate from a young age. Financial Adviser Shiree Hembrow of phwealth is aware of this gender gap from her 25 years of working in the financial advice world. “Since I have been giving financial advice, I have noticed that few women I meet are fully engaged in their finances or in planning for their lives after work, mostly leaving it up to their husbands/partners or no-one.” Taking an active and collaborative role in managing household finances empowers women and helps protect them for the future. “At a very extreme level, not getting
involved in household finances can amount to serious neglect and have implications for a woman’s future. Outlined recently on RNZ’s Nine to Noon programme by the CEO of Auckland’s Aged Care, was the case of a 72-year-old woman, who accepted help from her daughter in dealing with her finances after separating from her husband as she had never been involved with their finances during their marriage. The daughter tricked her mother into signing her home over to her thereby literally stealing her mother’s house through deception.” Shiree says educating women about the financial side of life is her true passion. “Financial independence is within every woman’s grasp” she explains. Shiree can help clients with all aspects of wealth management and financial planning – from budgeting to investing to estate planning. “Statistically women live longer than men and earn less. This means women require
more money saved for what is likely to be a longer retirement. Women over 50 need reassurance they will not run out of money or be a burden on their families. This is extremely important for widowed or divorced women, a situation that can hit you at any time of life.” A written personal financial plan from an independent third party such as a financial adviser helps women, either single or in a relationship, to map out what they want to achieve in their life. They can take an equal and active role in decisions around shared and independent finances. “The benefits of a plan apply regardless of the size of a woman’s salary or wealth. Evidence shows that once women are empowered around money, they become hugely useful to themselves and others around them. I do believe more and more women are becoming aware and taking an interest in their finances – but there is still a way to go.” www.phwealth.co.nz Metropol 8 July, 2021 25

Shacket styling Leather:
Neutral:
Add a touch more edge to your wardrobe by rocking a leather shacket. Worn over a crisp white top and blue jeans, a leather shacket can be so wearable and add a touch of verve to an otherwise plain ensemble. There are plenty of vegan leather options out there, as well as beige and lighter colourways too.
In terms of the versatility and longevity of wardrobe pieces, neutral is always your safest bet to get the most wear out of them. The shacket is no exception, with beautiful tones of grey, beige, and camel all good choices. You can guarantee plenty of wear out of these options.

Keeping abreast of cancer A University of Canterbury (UC) student has developed a new computerised method of reading mammograms that could help radiologists detect warning signs of breast cancer.
H
aipeng Li is about to complete a PhD in Software Engineering at UC after spending the last three years working on computational algorithms that can automatically read and analyse mammogram x-rays. The algorithms he has developed, with UC Professor Ramakrishnan Mukundan
and radiologist Dr Shelley Boyd at Pacific Radiology in Christchurch as his supervisors, have been shown to accurately detect two markers linked to increased risk of breast cancer. He hopes the research will eventually help radiologists identify cancers at an
early stage when they can be treated more successfully. “Early detection through routine mammograms plays an important role in preventing breast cancer deaths,” Li says. “But reading and interpreting suspicious regions in mammograms is repetitive and challenging work. “The algorithms I’ve been working on are designed to make it easier for radiologists to pick up two biomarkers for breast cancer - microcalcifications and mammogram density. Tiny calcium deposits in the breast and dense breast tissue are both indicators of a higher risk of developing breast cancer.” Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women with over 1.5 million diagnosed worldwide each year. In New Zealand, there are more than 3000 diagnosed cases and more than 600 deaths every year. Mammography is a widely accepted imaging method used for routine breast cancer screening around the world and it can detect 80 to 90 percent of breast cancer cases before symptoms appear. Li’s new techniques using advanced machine learning algorithms have shown higher accuracy rates in automatically detecting microcalcifications and dense breast tissue compared to other computerised tools being used by radiologists internationally. He says his aim is to provide a “secondary perspective” to support radiologists’ work and make it easier for them to interpret images, rather than computers replacing people. “Knowing that the work I’m doing will contribute to people’s health outcomes makes it more meaningful for me. It’s using artificial intelligence to help human beings and change our lives for the better.” Li has been awarded a PhD Publishing Scholarship from UC’s College of Engineering.

When it comes to embracing the grey, there really is something for everyone, it’s a natural process but it does not have to be a gruelling one. When teamed with a precision cut, the result is transformative explains V for Hair and Beauty Master Stylist Vicki Ogden-O’Fee.
ust because you have silver hair coming in and you want to go grey gracefully doesn’t mean it has to be a silver colour,” she says. “We help you discover if you are warm or cool based on hair, skin and eyes, and from there we help you decide the best look for you.” While those with a warm base suit silver hair with soft champagne, sandy iris, strawberry beige, or translucent butterscotch tones, those with a cool base suit silver dove, champagne lilac or platinum iris. “Getting your colour undertone is so important and when this is done right it gives your face an instant brightening, lift and can take years off,” Vicki says. “Get it wrong and you will feel drab and look drained and older… consultation is key!”

Specialist pain management Ever experienced that surge of pain from an injury, rendering you breathless? You grit your teeth, and a colourful volley of questionable words escape your lips.
I
nterestingly, many injuries can be prevented through heightened muscle awareness, stretching and core strength, which promotes accurate muscle functioning and supports healthy posture. Typically, unnecessary accidents occur when you are distracted, over-tired, and not listening to your body’s early warning pain signals or personal physical limitations. Other times it is a recurring migraine pattern or neck pain, an arthritic or postural predisposition but the reality is that your ability to function normally and optimally is limited and can come to an abrupt halt. Thankfully, whatever your pain equation, there is a professional healthcare solution available from the ACC registered team at Muscle People Physiotherapy. Their diagnostic expertise spans over 20 years with three separate branches in Wigram Skies, Bishopdale and Christchurch City Centre, for added convenience. The highly qualified Muscle People team of specialists, understand that pain-management is an individual marathon, not a race and that their 1-on-1 customer-focused treatment approach is just as important as their follow-up care thereafter. Add an extensive list of treatment modalities, a variety of exercise training options, and you will feel the difference between feeling stuck and demotivated to championing your way across the recovery finish line. Key exercise programmes that focus on core strength, corrective posture alignment and overall
For recurrent back pain/core strengthening, the Dynamic Spines Programme is essential, with two levels, each taking place over an 8–10week cycle
spinal health are regularly available to provide a fun and informative way to regain body awareness and overall functional strength. They include Pilates exercises, a popular rehabilitative and posture corrective discipline as well as Oov or Surfset classes with varying fitness benefits. The unique Oov ball is an ergonomically designed foam device, shaped to fit the curve of your back and help improve inner abdominal muscles, joint mobility and balance. Perhaps try a cool Surfset class with a surfboard inspired exercise board for a balance stability focused fitness workout. For recurrent back pain/core strengthening, the Dynamic Spines Programme is essential, with two levels, each taking place over an 8–10-week cycle. The programmes teach you to activate and strengthen key and supporting muscle groups from your back and abdominal core, thus creating more habitual healthy movement patterns, flexibility and overall strength. These physiotherapist lead classes will facilitate participants according to their specific diagnostic level and are also supported through ACC. Injuries have a direct impact on you, functionally, psychologically and financially so get back to your regular self, prioritise your fitness goals and enjoy your next bout of outdoor adventuring, mudsoaked boots and all. Regular exercise has been found to improve mental health, build-up fitness and help to stave off numerous medical conditions.
E
xercising during the colder winter months may not be as pleasant as jogging along the beach in summer, yet there are many forms of indoor workouts that can be embraced to achieve the same end result. The latest Ministry of Health statistics show that only about half of all New Zealand adults do at least two-and-a-half hours’ activity a week. Men are slightly more likely than women to reach these levels in a week.
Musical Manoeuvres Pop in your headphones or CD, and dial up your favourite songs to dance to. Remember to dance like no-one is watching.
42 8 July, 2021 Metropol
The information also shows that one in eight adults is physically active for less than 30 minutes a week; only seven percent of young people aged five to 17 are physically active at least one hour daily; and that almost 80 percent of children, aged five to 14 years, usually watch screens including televisions for two or more hours a day. You can stay cosy and warm indoors and get your heart rate up! Here are some ideas:
Online Offerings Find a fitness programme online – yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi – and join the participants. Start with a few minutes daily and gradually exercise longer.
Practical Pursuits Housework such as vacuuming, dusting, and bed-making all helps bend, stretch and work those muscles, so go for it.

Make mine a mocktail July is one month when many take up the ‘Dry July’ cause to raise funds for cancer sufferers, turning from cocktails to mocktails.
C
ancer affects one in three New Zealanders in one form or another, which is a good reason to support Dry July, yet there are plenty of other times when a mocktail would be perfect.
Alcohol-free options are numerous, they look good and taste great. Another plus is no hangover the next day if you drink too many. Here are some tips from Metropol:
GO H2O An obvious choice is water. New Zealand is for the most part blessed to have excellent potable water, whether it comes from a tap or a bottle, still or sparkling. Add a dash of lime, a splash of fruit juice or swig it pure.
MILKY WAY
FRUITY TUTTI Apples, oranges, kiwifruit and cranberries are a few of the choices. Squeezed, dried, frozen and fresh, fruit offers something for all tastes. Mix them together, add ice, a garnish and enjoy.
NEW
Milk is a firm favourite of young and old alike, from milky Milo, to smoothies or occasionally swigged straight from the bottle. Its benefits include important nutrients such as calcium, B vitamins, potassium and vitamin D.

ast forward and we are living an age where nonalcoholic drinks might be considered by many to be the glasses of life. In a nod to drinking in moderation, Black Pineapple has teamed up with the leading alcohol-free spirit company, Seedlip, for a new kind of cocktail hour at home, developing lower and nonalcoholic options with all the taste and fun, but no hangover. Here’s a sample recipe to try yourself. Of course, if you want more punch, you could add your favourite gin, vodka or white rum.
Add Seedlip x Black Pineapple ‘Pineapple Oleo Saccharum’, made with the discarded skins and cores of pineapples, to the mango tea. Garnish with passionfruit syrup and Foamee and enjoy!

It was established a decade ago by chef Simo, whose reputation for authentic Moroccan cuisine is wellknown in the city. The emphasis with Moroccan food inevitably leads back to the tagine. You can choose traditional dishes like lamb, prune and almond or preserved lemon, chicken and olive tagine served with couscous that’s flavoured with orange. Or you can have your tagine stew with Arabic rice or smoked barley. The restaurant has an impressive array of desserts to follow your tagine meal, and keep it authentic by finishing off with a Moroccan ‘whisky’ a.k.a mint tea. Mosaic by Simo in the Addington Shopping Centre on Lincoln Rd, is a great destination for a spur-ofthe-moment lunch or dinner, or you can book a table 03 338 2882. Authentic cuisine for two decades Neither earthquakes nor fire have been able to break the indomitable spirit of the team at The China Kitchen restaurant. Now in the third location of its 20-year history, this family - owned restaurant continues to produce the same fresh authentic Chinese food that has delighted its customers for many years.
W
e are not moving again”, says Stella Li, The China Kitchen’s co-owner. It’s not hard to see why she is so adamant. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated with Chinese murals and accessories, while the spacious kitchen is big enough for three wok stations and for staff making trays and trays of the restaurant’s signature dish – dumplings. “We make about 350 dumplings every day – pork and chive,
as well as chicken and spinach or vegetarian. They are particularly special because we make our own pastry. There wouldn’t be a day go by without virtually every table ordering dumplings, either pan fried or steamed. The rest of the menu is equally impressive featuring 102 dishes, all without MSG. “Diners love the chicken and cashew nut dish that has heaps
of vegetables. Another of our taste sensations is the barbeque pork with teriyaki sauce. We cook everything to order so it arrives at the table fresh and hot. That’s often remarked on very favourably by our customers.” Open Tuesday – Sunday 11.30am – 9.30pm. Futuristic fermentation Fermented foods have been making waves for a few years now, as the power of their probiotics keeps those keen on consuming gut-loving goodness coming back for more. And this trend is showing no sign of subsiding. Morgan Tait looks at the next evolution of fermented foods.
Cultured coffee Putting new meaning on the term “coffee culture”, fermented coffee is where harvested coffee cherries are sprayed with natural yeasts and fermented. This is said to unlock sweet and light flavour profiles. Nespresso has launched La Cumplida Refinada, its latest limited-edition coffee which uses the fermentation technique.

Long live the cheese! Some food producers are using cultures to prolong the life of food and prevent it being wasted. Named bioprotection, the concept works by cultures and fermentation being added to food to “outcompete” yeast and mould spoilage. The cultures can be added to a huge range of fermented dairy products like yoghurt and white cheese. Yes, that means long lasting cheese!
Sweetening the deal Fermented sweetener with zero calories, fermented honey and sool, a Korean rice alcohol are also amongst those fermented foods tipped to go big. The first two speak for themselves, but sool is a broad range of beverages which can be flavoured with fruit to make a wide range of sweet alcoholic drinks.

Bloomingville Griffin rug from Sweetpea & Willow
R
ugs can be used to frame an area, such as one used for seating or dining, or to texture an area like a bedroom or office. When worked into the overall design of a room, rugs can draw all the elements together – whether in colour, style, shape or texture. Functionally, rugs add warmth and help with acoustics – they also make for a cosy nook in front of the fire or, likewise, in a sunny spot. In 2021, interior trends are leaning towards rugs in warmer, earthier and neutral tones made from natural fibres such as wool, sisal and jute. These fibres not only contribute to creating a grounding space which connects us to nature, but also tend to perform well in durability, which is important if you opt for a floor covering in a high-traffic zone such as a hallway. Contrastingly, bold patterns and colours are also tipped to dominate rug trends this year as people opt to express more personality in their home habitats. Think rugs which resemble artwork, and patterns reminiscent of the Art Deco era. And finally, as with interior furnishings, people want tactile elements in their rugs. This means longer pile rugs are making a comeback, no, not a retro shagpile, a more refined contemporary texture which resembles lush and cosy wool.

Take inspiration from Californian Spanish-style homes to create a conversation pit that’s a conversation piece in itself.
M
odern California Spanish style champions simple yet elegant design as it’s known for symmetrical decorating and reframing interior spaces with archways. Warm woods are a staple in this style too, which makes relaxing desert tones the perfect colour palette choice for a new take on this look. If installing new archways goes beyond what you’re willing to do, it’s easy to replicate the same vibe by painting an
arched feature on your wall. In this room, the walls are in Resene Smooth Operator with stripes painted in Resene Mountain Mist. To get an even half circle, attach a length of string (that’s half the size of the width of your arch) to a pencil. Secure one end of the string to the base of the wall where you want the middle of your half circle to be and then carefully mark out the circumference of the half circle on the wall. Once you have your half circle marked out,
use a ruler and a level to accurately pencil out your stripes. This modern, desert-toned palette is warm and welcoming. In addition to the caramel and grey hues on the walls, there’s muted brown Resene Rodeo Drive on the large plant pot, apricot Resene Beethoven on the tall vase and grey Resene Mountain Mist and sienna brown Kalgoorie Sands on the peg stools. The combination of orange and grey is complementary, with one colour’s undeniable warmth balancing the other’s cooler nature. Look to style the space with leather chairs, linen cushions, a large woven rug and, of course, plenty of indoor plants.

Creating an accepting atmosphere where artists are free to explore, learn and express themselves is the aim of Art Metro’s owner Simon Walmisley, who pointed us in the direction of adult student Grant Philip to talk about his life and experiences.
G
rant began mouth painting in 2002 after being injured in a diving accident as a young man. A former Territorial Soldier, he has continued to develop as an artist and also uses his knowledge to work with the Defence Force on its “Art in Recovery” initiative for personnel, ex-personnel and their families. You never stop learning as an artist and right now Grant is focussing on working with watercolors, after mainly using acrylics, in the past. He’s loving his classes at
Art Metro. “It has been great. I have been accepted for my ability and my art work, not my disability. You can paint at your own pace and the people here are very accommodating to everyone’s needs.” By the way, you can possibly see some of Grant’s more commercial work next time one of your children goes nuts at McDonald’s. He designed the restaurants’ playgrounds for many years! Art is for everyone at Art Metro. Call Simon to find out more 03 354 4438 or visit the website below. www.artmetro.co.nz

he teardrop-shaped pattern has been a regular on fashion catwalks for decades, and now major textile producers and furniture manufacturers are also embracing paisley. You too can join the paisley parade whether it be reflected in your fashion, furniture or furnishing choices. Developed in Kashmir in India centuries ago, paisley was hugely popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly for interior decorating.
Now it is being used increasingly in textiles and wallpapers. Considered both bohemian and luxe, the iconic motif is found on everything from ceramics to curtains to bedding, so check it out. Less is usually best so if you are using it somewhere in a room’s furniture or furnishing, make sure it is balanced by some contrasting plain fabrics, walks or fittings. Mix and match; it’s a fun pattern to work with. Here are some suggestions:

O
ne of the most embraced and romantic is the country bedroom. From casual to chic, this style is often about soft feminine neutrals and pastels or the complete opposite, more masculine yet soft greys, paired with blacks and crisp white sheets. The French bedroom is a sanctuary, a place for relaxing and romance, often achieved with an eclectic mix of antique and modern furniture that looks like each piece has been passed
down through the generations. Depending on opting for more casual or chic, these include an antique iron or contemporary upholstered bed, a rustic or sparkling chandelier, rustic accents, light-coloured neutral paint on the walls, distressed or vintage furniture, gorgeous pinch-pleated linen or cotton curtains, fresh flowers, a real or faux fireplace, and a touch of bling. A family full of energy
T
Rarely has the expression ‘It’s all in the family’ been truer than with the Brown family of North Canterbury Energy Centre.
ogether, Tracey Brown, his wife Joanne, sons Joshua and Jarrad and daughters Hollie and Zoe work towards the common goal of designing, supplying, installing and servicing an extensive range of refrigeration, heat pumps and ventilation for their clients throughout North Canterbury and Kaikoura. “With so much family

involvement over many years, we are pretty unusual in the energy field,” says operations manager Hollie. “Our strong relationship translates easily into developing genuine lasting relationships with clients. We treat them as part of our family as well. What is important for us is developing the right bespoke energy solution for every client, whether it’s a domestic or a commercial situation.” Each member of the Brown family has their own specialist area. Patriarch Tracey is a refrigeration engineer with some 40 years’ experience. Joshua has followed in his father’s engineering footsteps, while Jarrad is a heat pump technician and a whiz at computer designing heating systems. Operations manager Hollie directs the office with moral support from mum Joanne and Zoe oversees the recycling and communications aspects of the operation. “No-one just expected us to come into the business. We made our own choices, but we are all now dedicated to our roles and love being in the industry because we are helping to improve people’s lifestyles. This is our future too and North Canterbury Energy Centre will always remain a family affair.”

he exciting restoration project won its designers two awards at this year’s The Te Kāhui Whaihanga, New Zealand Institute of Architects, one in the ‘Heritage’ category. Commissioned by Box 112, the project stands heritage true, with an intelligent interspersing of complementary materials to merge its past and present into a new form, namely a unique commercial hub-bub, with a penthouse-style rooftop bar boasting a retractable roof and sensational 360 degree views overlooking the Port Hills, Avon River, and the occasional snow-capped Alps creeping
into selfie snapshot, (weather permitting.) Spreading its design wings further into Christchurch CBD, Three Sixty Architecture received another award for The Muse Hotel in the ‘Hospitality’ category. Originally a 1961 Peter Bevan commission, The Canterbury Building Society Building, a repurposing project has been refashioned into a designer chic hotel, displaying local art, fusing urban lifestyle vibes, and smartly summed up in its eclectic rooftop bar, The Pink Lady, overlooking the city and enticing you to indulge in the Christchurch skyline at your leisure.
Sheppard and Rout is delighted with its win in the Public Architecture: Repurposed Spaces section of the NZIA regional awards for an incredible transformation of the new home for the Majestic Church.
he fundamental approach to the site was to provide a layered integration from the street into the heart of the Majestic spaces,” says the company’s Associate Director and Project Leader Matt Gutsell. “A courtyard between the existing buildings provides a connection from foyer, informal gathering spaces to an entry deck and terrace, with concrete pillars to the street frontage creating a layered delineation to the street frontage.” The project involved the transformation of a collection of dilapidated industrial machinery and fabrication sheds into an exciting new home for the church. Following Sheppard and Routs’ reimagination plus reuse of existing materials, the complex incudes a variety of multi-purpose spaces such as an auditorium, foyer, recording, dance and arts studio. “The outcome balances the expression of raw existing industrial materials with modern functions and spatial connections,” says Matt. The auditorium sits at the heart of the complex, where the main gable is conceived as a series of scales which step back from the street frontage to the courtyard and which are punctured by a steel framed diamondshaped window, creating a connection into the auditorium from the footpath. Façade lighting completes the vibrant identity of the Majestic space.

A jewel in the mall WORDS STEPHEN GOODENOUGH
The jewel of a building at 94 Cashel Mall has earned a well-deserved win in the NZIA Commercial section local awards for Dalman Architects. A thoughtful project, it carries forward its place in Christchurch history while bringing beauty and interest to the promenade along the mall.
T
he original building was single storied, however the Christchurch City Council required at least two stories in the new design. “We responded by making this small building look bigger than it actually is; the façade is extended higher than it needs to be, and the tall oriel bay window further increases the building’s presence as well as providing light into the space” says managing director Richard Dalman. Inside, the building incorporates a mezzanine floor designed for offices and facilities, storage, or retail. The team cites the late Italian architect Carlo Scarpa as an inspiration in crafting the façade with pre-cast concrete and copper finishes. The interior enjoys a large volume and ply linings create a natural environment. The original building occupied the site for over a century. Its reincarnation references the scale and the long narrow shape of the original, while providing a stylish and modern commercial premise. Consortium Construction was charged with making the concepts a reality. “We pride ourselves on our practical, pragmatic approach and being easy to work with. Although we tackle large projects, we are not a large corporate ourselves; relationships with clients are always number one and we strive to make the process as simple as it can be,” says Brooke Whiting, General Manager. Working with Dalman Architects on this job was so straightforward, says Brooke, “The site had its challenges and we worked closely with the team at Dalman’s to carry it through smoothly.” The timeline was critical with concrete panels having to be placed before the next-door building was completely up. “The logistics were complex but it was enjoyable working in with the neighbouring build to make it happen.” For Brooke, the building is unique. “The exterior is different - the design incorporated unique concrete panel details in different finishes, plus the amazing copper piece that faces onto the mall, the effect is really cool. The street frontage is narrow and if you blink, you miss it, but it is so worth paying attention so you can appreciate the detailing,” she says.

T
he stunning modernist home was designed and meticulously detailed for the architect’s own family. Set on a long north-south orientated site in Helmores Lane, the site is surrounded by an established garden and the incredible backdrop of trees in Hagley Park and Millbrook Reserve, captured visually to stunning effect from many vantages within the house. “My own design and detailing ideologies come into play,” says owner and architect Jonathan Kennedy. “The house is wellconnected with the external environment with large opening walls of glass linking the internal and sheltered external living spaces, creating evening sun traps and areas where adults and children can entertain independently. It is a ‘social house’ with large sliding doors, spacious open plan
Design plus setting plus orientation led to a very clear win for Sheppard Rout in the regional round of the NZIA awards, housing section.
living, dining and kitchen spaces all well connected to bedrooms and study. A large double-height volume above the main living and entry spaces connects upstairs with downstairs.” The kitchen creates a set of architectural forms and features in itself, while the latest solar panel power technologies, hydronic water and space heating systems, integrated heat pumps, and automated lighting and audio systems all seamlessly integrate into the house’s design. While the interiors are flooded with natural light, concealed LED lighting effects bring the house to life at night. Gregg Builders brought the incredible design into being and was an obvious choice, having worked with Sheppard and Rout on a variety of projects for many years. “We really enjoy our relationship with the
team,” says Blair Watson, Project Manager for Gregg Builders, “so it was a fabulous opportunity to build Jonathan’s own house, with its incredible design and location.” Highlights of the project for Blair are the Venetian plaster used on the inside of the showers and interior walls, the kitchen benchtops in Italian stone, and the double height void up to the office space. “The design excellence speaks for itself so I think it would have been an easy call for the judges,” says Blair. The way the home is oriented on the site maximises its unique setting, while the outdoor living and swimming pool design are faultless. “We’ve been lucky to do this great build,” says Blair, “and as clients they were perfect, they knew exactly what they wanted and together we’ve created this remarkable result.”

he MX-30 is available as a Mild-Hybrid and pure EV. My test car was the MX30 Limited 2.0L Petrol Mild-Hybrid. The 2.0L petrol e-Skyactiv-G four cylinder with Mild-Hybrid technology is a real peach, providing a seamless and smooth delivery of power throughout the rev range. Looks wise, the MX-30 is a stunning looking bit of kit, thanks to its Ceramic Metallic colour combo, swooping coupeesque roofline, and the rear doors which give a nod to the iconic RX-8 sports car. Inside, the MX-30 uses a variety of recycled materials including heritage cork for the centre console tray to recycled fabric and vegan leather for the seats plus recycled plastic bottles for the upper door trim. The MX-30 also sports a minimalist cabin. I loved its floating centre console with touchscreen heater controls. Plus, all the switchgear feels satisfying to use. The MX-30 was also awarded a 5-star ANCAP safety rating in 2020. Under the Government’s Full Clean Car Programme 2022, the MX-30 Mild-Hybrid featured here falls into the zero-band category, which means no added costs on top of the starting price of $45,990 plus ORC. Also, for every MX-30 sold, Mazda New Zealand will fund five native trees in conjunction with Trees That Count. I’m really looking forward to trying the EV variant soon.

Your pulse is racing. You’ve managed to figure out how the butterfly doors open so at least you can slide into the McLaren GT.
Y
ou have been shown the button that raises the vehicle in case you need to go across a judder bar or up an angled driveway without tearing off the underside of the car because it’s THAT low. You’re clenching the key as you ease into the sports leather seating of McLaren’s midengine V8 supercar Grand Tourer (GT) and push start. WOW! Seconds later the exhilarating roar of the engine brings the biggest smile to your face as you leave AVID car detailing at 59 Harmen Street where
Giltrap Motor Group has brought some of its finest cars to Christchurch to share with autophiles like me. There are three modes. Comfort, Sport and ‘my insurance policy won’t cover that one’. I’m sticking to comfort until I hit the motorway. Stopping at the start of the 100km sign, I drop it into sport and put my foot down. Immediately I’m pushed back in my seat, and oh what a comfortable seat it is. The 4-litre V8 reaches 100kmh with its 612 horsepower in 3.2 seconds. I didn’t see that myself, but I don’t doubt that it is true.
Motorways are great for slow curving speed bends but it’s the Port Hills where I test its agility. I leave early to hit the sunrise at Godley Head so photographers Harrison Fann and Jack Morgan have the best lighting to capture its angled beauty. Every bump and turn is felt, and the car hugs the ground as each wheel knows exactly what to do. My main fear is overdoing it. I had a friend who wrote his off, sending it into a ditch so I’m very aware that as good as I think I am, the car might have other ideas.

motoring Shaun Summerfield from Giltrap was right though, don’t be afraid. The car’s designed to do most of the work; you just point it in the right direction and watch as you corner as if it is on rails. ABS and driveline traction control keep this puppy safe. Jordan Darrow from Auckland McLaren says: “The McLaren GT is the every day supercar with an emphasis on comfort and being lightweight” and I agree. Accelerating out of a tight corner in the GT is arguably every car-lover’s dream; it’s almost impossible to describe it. Cool?
Nah! Super Cool! Using the metal paddles for a manual option raises it a whole nother thrill level. The Bowers and Wilkins sound system is blasting out my favourite drive music, yet the sweetest sound is hearing the engine roar as I purposely corner in lower gears. You can choose your sound options at no extra cost, even if the engine itself is music to your ears. There’s room enough to throw your golf clubs in the back plus space for luggage too. The McLaren GT comes with a nice
glassy tailgate but no “there’s my engine” flashiness. It is totally refined, and its angles are pure art. The carbon fibre body is strong and light and less angled than its racetrack equivalent. Yes, sexier! Standing watching the sunrise above Scarborough was breath-taking. Combine that with the experience of driving a supercar at the top of its game and you have my number one drive of all time. The cliché is right: It is the journey not the destination… in a McLaren Grand Tourer V8.

DER
or 2021, the Highlander has been refreshed for the fourth time, with a recent launch in Auckland and Paihia to show what’s new. The new Highlander is being built at Toyota’s US plant in Indiana, and New Zealand and Australia are the only right-hand-drive markets getting it. Styling wise, with its wide grill and wing-like spindle, it does have a whiff of “the land of the free”. The range starts at Toyota’s Driveaway Price of $60,990 for the entry level GXL 3.5L V6 Petrol and finishes at $74,990 for the high end 2.5L four-cylinder Limited ZR Hybrid. Two variants of the petrol are on offer, but Toyota is championing the three GXL, Limited and Limited ZR Hybrid options to spearhead its sales. Longer by 60mm and 5mm wider, it also weighs 75kg less than the previous generation. The interior is well laid out, with all the switchgear for the infotainment system being very intuitive. It comes with a plethora of standard kit including LED headlights, rain sensing wipers, hill start assist, parking sensors all around, reversing camera, blind spot monitoring, keyless entry with push button start, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. Toyota’s safety sense package is standard across the range with precollision system with autonomous
emergency braking, emergency steering assist, lane tracing assist, lane departure alert, radar cruise control, curve speed reduction, and road sign assist. The ZR Hybrid has other goodies such as a marvellous panoramic roof, heated and ventilated leather seats, sat nav and an impressive 11-speaker JBL sound system. Our drive started at Emirates Team New Zealand HQ on Auckland’s Viaduct and we made our way north to Paihia. The Hybrid was certainly frugal on the juice, however it felt distinctly softer in the corners despite the torque delivery of petrol and electric power being linear and responsive. By contrast, both the GXL and Limited petrol models felt sportier in the corners, but you don’t get the same level of straight-line grunt. Then again, as we made our way from Paihia to the amazing sight of 2000-year-old kauri tree, Tane Mahuta, the Highlander showed it was never about devouring bendy bitumen, but more about being a comfortable and solid performer on a long trip, which it managed quite well. As far as first impressions go, the latest Highlander, thanks to the levels of kit and the inclusion of Hybrid could very well tip the segment in favour of Toyota. I’m looking forward to testing it out on Canterbury roads soon.
