From the Editor Another fortnight has passed, along with the shortest day and some typically Canterbury winter weather. Four seasons in one day might easily be our current theme song, yet we still have much to be thankful for. All around the region innovative new and fledgling projects continue to develop housing, business and civil amenities to Christchurch and its satellite environs. This gradual growth brings many trickle-down bonuses to the local economy, the business sector and the people. The decade since the February 2011 earthquakes has shown the strength of Canterbury and the innovativeness of those who call it home. Investment capital and entrepreneurial talent flows towards economies with sensible regulatory policies, many of which are in evidence in Christchurch.

Wongi and the giant peach Christchurch residents are often surprised and delighted when a new work of art appears on the walls of their city, which has become known as the ‘street art capital’ of New Zealand. Julia Strelou talks to one of the artists.

freedom, and the result was an exciting, everchanging place that attracted artists and viewers alike.” Although Christchurch’s street art has been noticed globally, the part urban art plays in the rebuild will decide whether this reputation will stand the test of time. “If we really want to be internationally renowned, wall owners should commission credible artists, limit the creative restraints, and trust they will create a great piece of art.” The peach is a seasonal fruit, and Wilson explains that this represents the changes the city has undergone. A city destroyed gave artists the way to create an urban art gallery, but as the city regenerates this newfound identity is at risk of being lost, he believes. “As the city rebuilds, there is a concern we’ll lose the reputation. The key difference now is that the city isn’t a blank canvas and the developers rightfully want to control what is going onto the beautiful new buildings. Street art is about freedom of speech and if the artists are controlled too tightly, it loses the essence of what makes it exciting.” Time will tell if the vibrant colours and carefully selected subject matter give Christchurch a long-lasting international street art reputation.

Marking time with the devil After Narropera Trio’s afternoon performances of Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, the Trio now turns its attention to another great work, Carl Maria von Weber’s brilliant opera, Der Freischütz (The Devil’s Marksman).

The beekeeping industry becoming increasingly unsustainable, matched with the rise in demand for alternative alcohols, alerted apiarist Wilbur Morrison and business marketing major Edward Eaton to a gap in the market. Metropol talks to the two self-starters to see what all the buzz is about.

Tell us a bit about Buzz Club’s token tipple. But due to low native honey prices, more keepers are leaving the industry and less of New Zealand is being pollinated. We modernise the world’s oldest alcohol (meal) to an extent unseen before and give unrecognised honeys a stage to stand on in one of the world’s fastest growing alcohol markets.

Masters in glassblowing and coldwork, Hamish Webster and Greg Swinburne have an exciting new combined display at Christchurch’s Form Gallery, on now until July 30.

e are holding only two glass exhibitions this year, and the other one was cast glass,” says gallery manager Ryan Dewsbury. “Compared to other art disciplines there are few glassblowers and the facilities are relatively scarce. With the added skill of coldwork, Greg’s and Hamish’s pieces make for unique work in this country,” he adds. Webster’s pieces, a mixture of colours and patterns, are reminiscent of the beauty that can be found in nature. He says that his inspiration comes from the environment and a childhood spent living rurally. Having grown up with dyslexia, Webster enjoys using art as way of

communicating and connecting with people. Swinburne’s exhibits represent a period of spiritual searching in his life. Many of his offerings and statues reflect this in the way they seem to be reaching for the heavens. All the pieces on display have been constructed by hand. Dewsbury explains: “Once the blown glass forms are completed, they are put, while still hot, in a kiln overnight. In the kiln, they cool down at a controlled rate to allow all stress to be relieved. When cold, the sculptures are cut with diamond tools and then there is the long and laborious job of grinding and polishing.”

fter more than two decades, the organising committee has decided the November event will be the grand finale. Held every two years, since its inception in 2000 it has raised more than $750,000 for Cholmondeley Children’s Home and shone a spotlight on dozens of

emerging artists. In 2019 it attracted more than 6000 attendees. The largest sculpture exhibition in the South Island, this year’s event will be held once again at Loudon Farm, Teddington, Banks Peninsula, with tickets available in October. Selection of this year’s sculptures is already underway, via a curatorial panel comprising of Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu Lead Curator Felicity Milburn, and manager/ curator at Ashburton Gallery, Shirin Khosraviani. Organising committee spokesman Ady Shannon says all work selected for the 2021 event will be eligible for the Sculpture on the Peninsula Award, and the $10,000 prize. The award will be judged by arts commentator and writer Dr Warren Feeney. All work on exhibition is also eligible for the $1500 People’s Choice Award. “Sculpture on the Peninsula is an event that represents the best of current art practice in New Zealand, providing artists an opportunity to balance their own creative vision with the challenge of this outstanding setting,” says Ady. “It has always attracted established and emerging artists from across New Zealand. Her last EP, Always Growing, is jam-packed with an exploration of sexuality, coming of age, mental health, and relationships. “I think a lot of issues in mental health stem from lack of communication. We need to be speaking more openly about experiences we go through so people can understand that they’re not alone in their experiences,” she says. “It can be really daunting as a young

person who’s trying to explore their sexuality or battle with mental health and feeling like you’re the only person in the world going through that experience.” One she knows all too well. “I’ve lost a family member due to lack of communication about their mental health and I think it’s important we learn to talk about it, and I want to be an example of that.” Paige also believes in the importance of representation in the industry because “All listeners and viewers can feel related

to, understood and, ideally, we’re making music for the public, and it’s important we include everybody.” The rising star recently announced her first-ever headline tour taking place this month at four locations, including Blue Smoke at The Tannery. What can concert-goers expect from the night? Lots of fun, new songs and the company of upcoming artists yet to make their debut on the music scene, says Paige. Q: What happens with stock at the time of sale? A: Stock is taken into account at the time of sale, usually at cost price, or using a formula agreed between Purchaser and Vendor. Sometimes the value of stock is added on to the asking price, but in general, stock is included in the price. The value of the stock can be determined by a stocktake just before takeover day, which can be jointly undertaken by Vendor and Purchaser. The parties may agree to appoint a Mediator to oversee the stocktake and assess stock quality and appropriate value. Stock included in a sale doesn’t normally include unsaleable or obsolete stock, both of which the Vendor should dispose of separately. The Agreement for Sale & Purchase of a Business has a mechanism for allowing for a percentage over or under a stock figure which can be paid for (or deducted). This is normally 10% but may be varied if required. There is usually the ability for a Vendor to adjust the stock to suit the expected purchase value, allowing for overs and unders. The financial gender gap This may come as a surprise to many women, but there is a profound gender gap in ﬁnancial literacy across OECD countries, including New Zealand.

Just 30% of women can be considered ‘financially literate’. Men appear to have statistically greater financial knowledge (source: www. oecd.org). We can, and need to, do better to ensure women are financially literate from a young age. Financial Adviser Shiree Hembrow of phwealth is aware of this gender gap from her 25 years of working in the financial advice world. “Since I have been giving financial advice, I have noticed that few women I meet are fully engaged in their finances or in planning for their lives after work, mostly leaving it up to their husbands/partners or no-one.” Taking an active and collaborative role in managing household finances empowers women and helps protect them for the future. “At a very extreme level, not getting

involved in household finances can amount to serious neglect and have implications for a woman’s future. Outlined recently on RNZ’s Nine to Noon programme by the CEO of Auckland’s Aged Care, was the case of a 72-year-old woman, who accepted help from her daughter in dealing with her finances after separating from her husband as she had never been involved with their finances during their marriage. The daughter tricked her mother into signing her home over to her thereby literally stealing her mother’s house through deception.” Shiree says educating women about the financial side of life is her true passion. “Financial independence is within every woman’s grasp” she explains. Shiree can help clients with all aspects of wealth management and financial planning – from budgeting to investing to estate planning. “Statistically women live longer than men and earn less. This means women require

more money saved for what is likely to be a longer retirement. Women over 50 need reassurance they will not run out of money or be a burden on their families. This is extremely important for widowed or divorced women, a situation that can hit you at any time of life.” A written personal financial plan from an independent third party such as a financial adviser helps women, either single or in a relationship, to map out what they want to achieve in their life. They can take an equal and active role in decisions around shared and independent finances. “The benefits of a plan apply regardless of the size of a woman’s salary or wealth. Evidence shows that once women are empowered around money, they become hugely useful to themselves and others around them. hen used correctly on the face, gua sha can promote blood circulation and encourage lymphatic drainage, which eliminates fluid build up and reduces puffiness. Keeping abreast of cancer A University of Canterbury (UC) student has developed a new computerised method of reading mammograms that could help radiologists detect warning signs of breast cancer.

aipeng Li is about to complete a PhD in Software Engineering at UC after spending the last three years working on computational algorithms that can automatically read and analyse mammogram x-rays. The algorithms he has developed, with UC Professor Ramakrishnan Mukundan

and radiologist Dr Shelley Boyd at Pacific Radiology in Christchurch as his supervisors, have been shown to accurately detect two markers linked to increased risk of breast cancer. He hopes the research will eventually help radiologists identify cancers at an

early stage when they can be treated more successfully. “Early detection through routine mammograms plays an important role in preventing breast cancer deaths,” Li says. “But reading and interpreting suspicious regions in mammograms is repetitive and challenging work. “The algorithms I’ve been working on are designed to make it easier for radiologists to pick up two biomarkers for breast cancer - microcalcifications and mammogram density. Tiny calcium deposits in the breast and dense breast tissue are both indicators of a higher risk of developing breast cancer.” Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women with over 1.5 million diagnosed worldwide each year. In New Zealand, there are more than 3000 diagnosed cases and more than 600 deaths every year. Mammography is a widely accepted imaging method used for routine breast cancer screening around the world and it can detect 80 to 90 percent of breast cancer cases before symptoms appear. Li’s new techniques using advanced machine learning algorithms have shown higher accuracy rates in automatically detecting microcalcifications and dense breast tissue compared to other computerised tools being used by radiologists internationally. He says his aim is to provide a “secondary perspective” to support radiologists’ work and make it easier for them to interpret images, rather than computers replacing people. “Knowing that the work I’m doing will contribute to people’s health outcomes makes it more meaningful for me. It’s using artificial intelligence to help human beings and change our lives for the better.” Li has been awarded a PhD Publishing Scholarship from UC’s College of Engineering.

When worked into the overall design of a room, rugs can draw all the elements together – whether in colour, style, shape or texture. Functionally, rugs add warmth and help with acoustics – they also make for a cosy nook in front of the fire or, likewise, in a sunny spot. In 2021, interior trends are leaning towards rugs in warmer, earthier and neutral tones made from natural fibres such as wool, sisal and jute. These fibres not only contribute to creating a grounding space which connects us to nature, but also tend to perform well in durability, which is important if you opt for a floor covering in a high-traffic zone such as a hallway. Warm woods are a staple in this style too, which makes relaxing desert tones the perfect colour palette choice for a new take on this look. If installing new archways goes beyond what you’re willing to do, it’s easy to replicate the same vibe by painting an

arched feature on your wall. In this room, the walls are in Resene Smooth Operator with stripes painted in Resene Mountain Mist. To get an even half circle, attach a length of string (that’s half the size of the width of your arch) to a pencil. Secure one end of the string to the base of the wall where you want the middle of your half circle to be and then carefully mark out the circumference of the half circle on the wall. Once you have your half circle marked out,

use a ruler and a level to accurately pencil out your stripes. This modern, desert-toned palette is warm and welcoming. In addition to the caramel and grey hues on the walls, there’s muted brown Resene Rodeo Drive on the large plant pot, apricot Resene Beethoven on the tall vase and grey Resene Mountain Mist and sienna brown Kalgoorie Sands on the peg stools. The combination of orange and grey is complementary, with one colour’s undeniable warmth balancing the other’s cooler nature. Paisley, once only popular as a bandana print, is tipped to be a top trend this summer.

he teardrop-shaped pattern has been a regular on fashion catwalks for decades, and now major textile producers and furniture manufacturers are also embracing paisley. You too can join the paisley parade whether it be reflected in your fashion, furniture or furnishing choices. Developed in Kashmir in India centuries ago, paisley was hugely popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly for interior decorating.

he exciting restoration project won its designers two awards at this year’s The Te Kāhui Whaihanga, New Zealand Institute of Architects, one in the ‘Heritage’ category. Commissioned by Box 112, the project stands heritage true, with an intelligent interspersing of complementary materials to merge its past and present into a new form, namely a unique commercial hub-bub, with a penthouse-style rooftop bar boasting a retractable roof and sensational 360 degree views overlooking the Port Hills, Avon River, and the occasional snow-capped Alps creeping

he fundamental approach to the site was to provide a layered integration from the street into the heart of the Majestic spaces,” says the company’s Associate Director and Project Leader Matt Gutsell. “A courtyard between the existing buildings provides a connection from foyer, informal gathering spaces to an entry deck and terrace, with concrete pillars to the street frontage creating a layered delineation to the street frontage.” The project involved the transformation of a collection of dilapidated industrial machinery and fabrication sheds into an exciting new home for the church. Following Sheppard and Routs’ reimagination plus reuse of existing materials, the complex incudes a variety of multi-purpose spaces such as an auditorium, foyer, recording, dance and arts studio. “The outcome balances the expression of raw existing industrial materials with modern functions and spatial connections,” says Matt. The auditorium sits at the heart of the complex, where the main gable is conceived as a series of scales which step back from the street frontage to the courtyard and which are punctured by a steel framed diamondshaped window, creating a connection into the auditorium from the footpath. Façade lighting completes the vibrant identity of the Majestic space.

The jewel of a building at 94 Cashel Mall has earned a well-deserved win in the NZIA Commercial section local awards for Dalman Architects. A thoughtful project, it carries forward its place in Christchurch history while bringing beauty and interest to the promenade along the mall.

he original building was single storied, however the Christchurch City Council required at least two stories in the new design. “We responded by making this small building look bigger than it actually is; the façade is extended higher than it needs to be, and the tall oriel bay window further increases the building’s presence as well as providing light into the space” says managing director Richard Dalman. Inside, the building incorporates a mezzanine floor designed for offices and facilities, storage, or retail. The team cites the late Italian architect Carlo Scarpa as an inspiration in crafting the façade with pre-cast concrete and copper finishes. The interior enjoys a large volume and ply linings create a natural environment. The original building occupied the site for over a century. Its reincarnation references the scale and the long narrow shape of the original, while providing a stylish and modern commercial premise. Consortium Construction was charged with making the concepts a reality. “We pride ourselves on our practical, pragmatic approach and being easy to work with. Although we tackle large projects, we are not a large corporate ourselves; relationships with clients are always number one and we strive to make the process as simple as it can be,” says Brooke Whiting, General Manager. Working with Dalman Architects on this job was so straightforward, says Brooke, “The site had its challenges and we worked closely with the team at Dalman’s to carry it through smoothly.” The timeline was critical with concrete panels having to be placed before the next-door building was completely up. “The logistics were complex but it was enjoyable working in with the neighbouring build to make it happen.” For Brooke, the building is unique. “The exterior is different - the design incorporated unique concrete panel details in different finishes, plus the amazing copper piece that faces onto the mall, the effect is really cool. The street frontage is narrow and if you blink, you miss it, but it is so worth paying attention so you can appreciate the detailing,” she says.

Teamwork creates award-winner

he stunning modernist home was designed and meticulously detailed for the architect’s own family. Set on a long north-south orientated site in Helmores Lane, the site is surrounded by an established garden and the incredible backdrop of trees in Hagley Park and Millbrook Reserve, captured visually to stunning effect from many vantages within the house. “My own design and detailing ideologies come into play,” says owner and architect Jonathan Kennedy. “The house is wellconnected with the external environment with large opening walls of glass linking the internal and sheltered external living spaces, creating evening sun traps and areas where adults and children can entertain independently. A large double-height volume above the main living and entry spaces connects upstairs with downstairs.” The kitchen creates a set of architectural forms and features in itself, while the latest solar panel power technologies, hydronic water and space heating systems, integrated heat pumps, and automated lighting and audio systems all seamlessly integrate into the house’s design. While the interiors are flooded with natural light, concealed LED lighting effects bring the house to life at night. Gregg Builders brought the incredible design into being and was an obvious choice, having worked with Sheppard and Rout on a variety of projects for many years. “We really enjoy our relationship with the

team,” says Blair Watson, Project Manager for Gregg Builders, “so it was a fabulous opportunity to build Jonathan’s own house, with its incredible design and location.” Highlights of the project for Blair are the Venetian plaster used on the inside of the showers and interior walls, the kitchen benchtops in Italian stone, and the double height void up to the office space. “The design excellence speaks for itself so I think it would have been an easy call for the judges,” says Blair. The way the home is oriented on the site maximises its unique setting, while the outdoor living and swimming pool design are faultless. “We’ve been lucky to do this great build,” says Blair, “and as clients they were perfect, they knew exactly what they wanted and together we’ve created this remarkable result.”

he MX-30 is available as a Mild-Hybrid and pure EV. My test car was the MX30 Limited 2.0L Petrol Mild-Hybrid. The 2.0L petrol e-Skyactiv-G four cylinder with Mild-Hybrid technology is a real peach, providing a seamless and smooth delivery of power throughout the rev range. Looks wise, the MX-30 is a stunning looking bit of kit, thanks to its Ceramic Metallic colour combo, swooping coupeesque roofline, and the rear doors which give a nod to the iconic RX-8 sports car. Inside, the MX-30 uses a variety of recycled materials including heritage cork for the centre console tray to recycled fabric and vegan leather for the seats plus recycled plastic bottles for the upper door trim. The MX-30 also sports a minimalist cabin. I loved its floating centre console with touchscreen heater controls. Plus, all the switchgear feels satisfying to use. The MX-30 was also awarded a 5-star ANCAP safety rating in 2020. Under the Government’s Full Clean Car Programme 2022, the MX-30 Mild-Hybrid featured here falls into the zero-band category, which means no added costs on top of the starting price of $45,990 plus ORC. Also, for every MX-30 sold, Mazda New Zealand will fund five native trees in conjunction with Trees That Count. I’m really looking forward to trying the EV variant soon.

Your pulse is racing. You’ve managed to figure out how the butterfly doors open so at least you can slide into the McLaren GT.

ou have been shown the button that raises the vehicle in case you need to go across a judder bar or up an angled driveway without tearing off the underside of the car because it’s THAT low. You’re clenching the key as you ease into the sports leather seating of McLaren’s midengine V8 supercar Grand Tourer (GT) and push start. WOW! Seconds later the exhilarating roar of the engine brings the biggest smile to your face as you leave AVID car detailing at 59 Harmen Street where

Giltrap Motor Group has brought some of its finest cars to Christchurch to share with autophiles like me. There are three modes. Comfort, Sport and ‘my insurance policy won’t cover that one’. I’m sticking to comfort until I hit the motorway. Stopping at the start of the 100km sign, I drop it into sport and put my foot down. Immediately I’m pushed back in my seat, and oh what a comfortable seat it is. The 4-litre V8 reaches 100kmh with its 612 horsepower in 3.2 seconds. I didn’t see that myself, but I don’t doubt that it is true.

Motorways are great for slow curving speed bends but it’s the Port Hills where I test its agility. I leave early to hit the sunrise at Godley Head so photographers Harrison Fann and Jack Morgan have the best lighting to capture its angled beauty. Every bump and turn is felt, and the car hugs the ground as each wheel knows exactly what to do. My main fear is overdoing it. I had a friend who wrote his off, sending it into a ditch so I’m very aware that as good as I think I am, the car might have other ideas.

The car’s designed to do most of the work; you just point it in the right direction and watch as you corner as if it is on rails. ABS and driveline traction control keep this puppy safe. Jordan Darrow from Auckland McLaren says: “The McLaren GT is the every day supercar with an emphasis on comfort and being lightweight” and I agree. Accelerating out of a tight corner in the GT is arguably every car-lover’s dream; it’s almost impossible to describe it. Cool?

Nah! Super Cool! Using the metal paddles for a manual option raises it a whole nother thrill level. The Bowers and Wilkins sound system is blasting out my favourite drive music, yet the sweetest sound is hearing the engine roar as I purposely corner in lower gears. You can choose your sound options at no extra cost, even if the engine itself is music to your ears. There’s room enough to throw your golf clubs in the back plus space for luggage too. The McLaren GT comes with a nice

glassy tailgate but no “there’s my engine” flashiness. It is totally refined, and its angles are pure art. The carbon fibre body is strong and light and less angled than its racetrack equivalent. Yes, sexier! Standing watching the sunrise above Scarborough was breath-taking. Combine that with the experience of driving a supercar at the top of its game and you have my number one drive of all time. The cliché is right: It is the journey not the destination… in a McLaren Grand Tourer V8.

or 2021, the Highlander has been refreshed for the fourth time, with a recent launch in Auckland and Paihia to show what’s new. The new Highlander is being built at Toyota’s US plant in Indiana, and New Zealand and Australia are the only right-hand-drive markets getting it. Styling wise, with its wide grill and wing-like spindle, it does have a whiff of “the land of the free”. The range starts at Toyota’s Driveaway Price of $60,990 for the entry level GXL 3.5L V6 Petrol and finishes at $74,990 for the high end 2.5L four-cylinder Limited ZR Hybrid. Two variants of the petrol are on offer, but Toyota is championing the three GXL, Limited and Limited ZR Hybrid options to spearhead its sales. Longer by 60mm and 5mm wider, it also weighs 75kg less than the previous generation. The interior is well laid out, with all the switchgear for the infotainment system being very intuitive. It comes with a plethora of standard kit including LED headlights, rain sensing wipers, hill start assist, parking sensors all around, reversing camera, blind spot monitoring, keyless entry with push button start, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. Toyota’s safety sense package is standard across the range with precollision system with autonomous

emergency braking, emergency steering assist, lane tracing assist, lane departure alert, radar cruise control, curve speed reduction, and road sign assist. The ZR Hybrid has other goodies such as a marvellous panoramic roof, heated and ventilated leather seats, sat nav and an impressive 11-speaker JBL sound system. Our drive started at Emirates Team New Zealand HQ on Auckland’s Viaduct and we made our way north to Paihia. The Hybrid was certainly frugal on the juice, however it felt distinctly softer in the corners despite the torque delivery of petrol and electric power being linear and responsive. By contrast, both the GXL and Limited petrol models felt sportier in the corners, but you don’t get the same level of straight-line grunt. Then again, as we made our way from Paihia to the amazing sight of 2000-year-old kauri tree, Tane Mahuta, the Highlander showed it was never about devouring bendy bitumen, but more about being a comfortable and solid performer on a long trip, which it managed quite well. As far as first impressions go, the latest Highlander, thanks to the levels of kit and the inclusion of Hybrid could very well tip the segment in favour of Toyota. I’m looking forward to testing it out on Canterbury roads soon.
