All that jazz Dust off your dancing shoes because the Christchurch Big Band Festival is gearing up for its 14th annual musical extravaganza this Labour weekend. Through rain, shine, earthquakes and now a global pandemic; the sweet sounds of smooth jazz will be gracing the city’s ears during the unique fiveday music festival.
P
erformers from all over New Zealand will flood in, followed by hundreds of partners and supporters, for the muchanticipated event. Riverside Market, Salt (Evolution) Square, the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, Tūranga Library, and many more quintessential Canterbury locations will serve as the backdrop for 24 mini concerts. Run by the community for the community, it is an event for everyone to enjoy whether you are part of the swing dance community, a proud parent or supporter, jazz enthusiast or a curious passer-by.
A new and unique feature this year is the debut of the Big Band Ball at Welles Street on Sunday October 25. For $40 you can get your swing on and dance the night away to three amazing big bands. Continuous canapes and a cash bar will equal a great night - and perhaps some sore feet for the famous big band picnic the following day. The festival runs from October 22 to 26, 2020, with something for all ages from early child to the retired. Breaking the silence Nikki Cleine woke up one morning when she was 34-years-old and realised she couldn’t hear herself speaking. Now, the Christchurch mother of three is sharing her story to help others hear again.

remember saying to my husband, ‘Did I just say that out loud?’ He said ‘yes’, and I realised I couldn’t hear myself. It was really shocking,” says Nikki, of that morning. “I haven’t been given a reason for my hearing loss, it came out of the blue. I failed a hearing test in my early 20s, and it gradually deteriorated to the point where I became profoundly deaf.” Nikki says her hearing loss had a significant impact on her work and family life. “Think about how many people you talk and listen to in a day. I had a busy job as a customer service supervisor. [Plus] school activities, work life and my personal relationships were all affected. “The kids stopped talking to me – they started talking to their dad. I had to leave my job and I was worried I’d never work again. Hearing loss is chronic and unrelenting. Every communication is a struggle.” Only 40 adults receive government-funded cochlear implants each year, with more than 230 currently on the waiting list.
Luckily, Nikki was referred to the Southern Cochlear Implant Programme (SCIP), and underwent surgery for a cochlear implant in 2011. SCIP is one of the two charities, along with The Hearing House (THH), which benefits from Loud Shirt Day. The annual campaign raises funds and awareness for the charities, which deliver cochlear implant services to Kiwi children and adults. “By the time I received my cochlear implant my confidence and quality of life were at rock bottom. Being isolated from life going on around you, and not being able to participate, makes it a very lonely world to inhabit. “I no longer have to stand on the sidelines watching everyone else living and laughing because I’m right there with them.” “The day my cochlear implant was switched on was one of the best days of my life,” says Nikki. “I could hear my kids. I had never heard anything my three-year-old said, ever.”

The Relay for Life on October 10 saw teams moving for 12 hours, while the Pink Ribbon Walk on October 17 is a 5km or 10km walk for groups to dress up in pink and lap Hagley Park. Chelsea Winter is unleashing her culinary creativity on the world yet again, but not like you’ve ever seen before. Because Chelsea, who has long been famed for her down to earth approach to butter, cream and meat, has ditched them all for a plant-based model. But if you think plant-based is parlance for deprivation, then you’ve got another thing coming.
A
fter all, there’s nothing lacking when it comes to Winter’s Banoffee Pie, Chicken-out Mayo Sammies, Oozy Quesadillas, Chocolate Mousse, Elvish Toast Bread, Jellytip Cheesecake, Snausage Rolls (which we have the recipe for on page 66), Macho Nachos, Creamy Alfredo and Gooey Caramel Slice – dairy or no dairy.
And there definitely is no dairy here folks! Despite the surname, Winter is a ray of sunshine; bubbly, passionate and so beautifully down to earth. It’s what has endeared the country to her since she took out the third series of television mainstay, Masterchef in 2012. She went on to put out an

incredible five cookbooks in five years – beautiful, but accessible recipes for everyday Kiwis, culminating in the best-selling New Zealand cookbook and the bestselling book overall of 2017, Eat. But it seems in 2020 Kiwis have had their fill of the classics and were craving something different – Supergood served up just that and was on its third reprint less than a week after hitting the streets! “I think this was the most exciting one yet,” she says of the latest cookbook, which came after a threeyear hiatus. “This book being particularly close to my heart, it was like Christmas Eve for a little kid the night before launch! It’s an incredible feeling seeing all the energy, hard work and love you’ve put into something there as a real, finished thing. Then seeing the book in people’s kitchens and the food being made is a real thrill.” Supergood is a strong reflection of the changes in Winter’s own eating, a natural evolution she has made with partner Douglas and their 15-month-old Sky, who you’ll find, more often than not, attached to Winter’s hip in the kitchen – “I can still manage to do everything except chop,” she laughs. “I’ve been on a bit of a journey of knowledge and awareness over the past few years, intuitively eating more plant-based food, until I got to a point where it’s pretty much all I eat now,” she explains. “And I’ve fallen in love with this lifestyle; this beautiful, sustainable, utterly delicious way of living. Now I’m just beyond excited to share it with people and let them see that plant-based food does not have to be scary, bland, boring or skimpy! No disappointing salads in this book. I think it’s the future.” So how can the recipes be any good without all the cheese and butter and cream and chicken?

“Trust me, they are. I’ve worked a bit of wizardry to create an entire book of plant-based comfort food – you wouldn’t even know there was no meat or cheese or eggs if you were just flicking through the book. And based on the overwhelming feedback I’ve had from hundreds of home cooks, the recipes are going down a treat with even the hardiest of carnivores! “This is exactly what I had in mind and I’m tickled pink.” When quizzed on its popularity, Winter suspects that it’s all simply down to making a new way of eating accessible. “I honestly think it’s because the book is plant-based, with a gluten-free option for most things – and because people trust my recipes,” she says. “It seems to me that people are more than ready to be inspired for a new way of cooking and eating. They just need the right recipes to do it; recipes that are easy, use mostly normal ingredients and recipes that the whole family will eat, and that’s what I’ve tried to do with Supergood.” So does this self-confessed purveyor of deliciousness and everyday gangly blonde Kiwi have a favourite Supergood recipe or are they all her babies? “It’s way too hard to choose,” she laughs. “The Macho Nachoes and Creamy Dahl with Crispy Potatoes have been hugely popular. The Jellytip Cheesecake on the cover and the Snickalicious (choc peanut) cheesecake are pretty incredible too. And you can’t go past that amazing 10-second aioli!” So, what is next on the culinary cards for Chelsea Winter? “Considering I spent all last summer in the kitchen working on Supergood, this summer I am having a rest! I plan to chill on the beach with the family, eat good plant-based food and enjoy this beautiful life I’ve been given.”

The places we call home Norah Johnson came to New Zealand from Toronto when she was seven years old. Her Irish-Canadian father and Kiwi mother settled the family in Auckland, and though it initially came as quite a culture shock, gradually Norah came to love living in the City of Sails.
I
n her early 20s, Norah visited Canada on a pilgrimage to her birthplace, but halfway through her trip she began to miss New Zealand. “I missed the beaches, the light – the open skies.”
Norah returned home to do her Bachelor of Arts majoring in Art History and English Literature, followed by a Master of Arts in Communications Studies. After her Masters,
Norah began painting and exhibited at Franklin Arts Centre, NZ Steel Gallery, Megan Dickinson Gallery and Hangar Gallery. It was on a visit to Christchurch, post-quake, that Norah felt an attraction to our city and eventually made the move here. Ōtautahi is now the city she calls home. Of her current exhibition Homage to Home at McAtamney Gallery, Norah has this to say: “I’m an abstract expressionist. Colour and mark making are my primary tools for expression. My work embraces the accidental,
the spontaneous and the experimental. “I work intuitively - interacting with the canvas in a noncritical, unpremeditated way. I seek to bypass the conscious mind (as far as possible) and engage with more subtle, intangible processes of art making. I want to discover how colour and marks interrelate in a harmonious, balanced and abstracted manner to ultimately reveal their lyricism. “Homage to Home is about the universal need and desire to put down roots and cultivate harmony within a landscape that is both domestic and geographical. Motifs and references of Mid-Canterbury and Christchurch have consistently featured in my work since I arrived 18-months ago. My work attempts to provide the viewer with a perceived sense of belonging to a time and place recorded and then distilled in an overall impression of that experience.”

Harcourts business brokers in New Zealand, Harcourts Grenadier can guide you through the buying and selling process, ensuring everything is simple and straightforward. “We have a huge amount of experience within our team and sell a wide range of businesses,” Athol says. “We’ve also got a lot of qualified purchasers looking for businesses right now.” Athol has the hands-on experience of 25-years of business ownership and operation and more than 15-years as a business broker. “We have such a strong team of 10 here, with a huge amount of experience – three of our business brokers each have over 15 years’ experience in business sales. We cover business sales from cafés to motels to agricultural businesses and everything in between. “If you’re considering buying or selling a business, get in touch with myself or our team and we can take you through the process. It’s a well-worn path, but it’s a process we go through to get a successful outcome for buyer and seller.”

The business of discovery The excitement of the chase and discovering unique and collectable pieces is what drives Maddie Hatton who opened her shop, The Vintro Room, just two weeks before the country went into lockdown.

women in business
“The timing wasn’t great,” says Maddie. “And I admit I had my doubts about whether we could make this work, but we had a lot of support from neighbouring retailers and are starting to build a regular base of customers and thanks to them, it has gradually built up.” It has been many years since Merivale had an antique shop, art gallery or a shop full of unique and vintage collectables so The Vintro Room, which combines all three, is a welcome addition. Maddie has always been a hunter and collector of art and antiques, and puts the blame firmly on her parents for her inability to pass up going to auctions or sorting through estates in search of the perfect piece. “They are collectors too, and my brother has his own business in Perth as a designer and manufacturer of art in steel, so The Vintro Room was probably an inevitable and very happy outcome for me.” Based at 186 Papanui Road, beside the Nurse Maude Hospice Shop, The Vintro Room is open from 10am to 2pm Tuesday to Saturday with new stock arriving every day. “We deliberately keep the prices very reasonable and rely on a fairly quick turnover so there’s always something new to see. We also have people coming in and asking if we buy, which we do if it fits.” Success in this field takes a good eye and a whole lot of research, and Maddie says a large part of the attraction of this business is the constant learning. “There will always be pieces you’ve not seen before or haven’t got much information to go on,” she says. “So good research is important. You also need to be aware that art, antiques and collectables go in and out of fashion cycles like anything else, so what’s highly desirable one year can fail to achieve a good price the next.” Maddie is also mother to a very active two-year-old and busy six-yearold - so running a business can be quite a juggling act. “Having the support of family and friends is what has made this possible,” says Maddie. “Even my husband has stopped raising an eyebrow when I come back with yet another car-load of stock. Although I suspect this is only because he knows it will be going straight out again.” While every business can have its moments and life is certainly being lived at a breakneck pace at the moment, Maddie can’t imagine doing anything else. This will no doubt come as very welcome news to her customers.

Your beautiful smile
Think of all the people you’ve met in your life who you remember for their shy, closed mouth smile. Perhaps they had crooked, misshapen teeth and were embarrassed to smile for the camera. Bad teeth can really knock confidence.
B
ut at Bradley Wood Dentists, patients can now access a new technology called Fastbraces, a wire and bracket treatment that straightens teeth much sooner than standard issue braces. In some cases, patients have completed their orthodontic care in as little as 20 weeks. Not everyone will achieve that, but it’s common for Fastbraces treatments to be completed in less than
a year. Another benefit of Fastbraces is that far fewer extractions are involved, and the Fastbraces system corrects interrupted or incomplete eruptions. Fastbraces technology allows for gentle movement of the roots of the teeth towards their final position from the onset of treatment, achieving root parallelism at the beginning stages, thus completing treatment from three months to around a year.
The advantages of Fastbraces treatments are: • Shorter time having braces on • Often cheaper than conventional braces • Comfortable • Fixes teeth that are chipped or worn down due to wear
BEFORE
Should you decide for a Fastbraces treatment, Bradley Wood Dentists recommend you book a free no obligation consultation. Your concerns can then be discussed, and you will be given an idea on how long your treatment will take, and how much it may cost to have that beautiful smile.

Bold colours are hot to trot, such as hot pink and orange together. “We curate our own collection of footwear with that point of difference, and comfort. If your shoes are dressy and exciting, they become the statement piece, dressing up a simple outfit. It’s important they’re super comfortable - we’ll be asking a lot of our feet, if you don’t have to think about them, you’ll enjoy the day more.” New Zealand designer Kathryn Wilson is a Wink favourite with her gorgeous detailing, beautiful and super comfortable designs. A winner in the hand-picked clothing ranges is the beautiful brand Briarwood. This season includes a gorgeous poppy print in various styles, or vivid apple-green skirt with hot pink leopard spots. The many faces of hyaluronic acid It’s spring, and when it comes to skin, it’s time for out with the Ds and in with the Hs. Say goodbye to dry, dull and dehydrated and hello to hydration and humectant hyaluronic.
H
yaluronic acid (HA) is naturally present in our bodies, performing a fundamental role in keeping the skin in good health. With age we can lose up to two thirds of our hyaluronic acid pool and even by 35, the skin thickness has decreased on average by around 22 percent; becoming more fragile, dehydrated and with diminished elasticity. At Face Value, hyaluronic features highly in the suite of products and treatments available for improving skin tone, texture and volume.
COSMECEUTICAL SKINCARE PRODUCT RANGES: We stock medical grade topical skincare including both hyaluronic creams and serums to awake, rejuvenate and protect.
AQUAPURE HYDRAFACIAL: After a light peel, hyaluronic acid and antioxidantrich serum is infused into the skin with electroporation enhancing delivery to the deeper layers. INJECTABLE SKIN BOOSTERS: The V2 skin booster utilises an innovative delivery device, the V2 injector gun, which can allow for precise and accurate dosage of hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals to the sub dermis of the skin. It offers precise depth and accurate dosing.
DERMAL FILLERS: Injectable hyaluronic gel, dermal fillers can increase volume, soften wrinkles, enhance lips and restore the youthful contours of the face. Dermal fillers are gel-like substances injected into the skin to physically lift and sculpt, correcting wrinkles, frown lines, scars and asymmetries of the face. PROFHILO® SKIN BIOREMODELLING: Brand new to New Zealand and all the rage in Europe, this revolutionary treatment can stimulate collagen and elastin by a slow release of pure hyaluronic acid when injected into precise points in the skin. Great for faces and necks, it can rejuvenate skin volume to reduce visible signs of aging.
For more information or to book a complementary consultation to discuss any of these treatments visit the Face Value website. www.facevalue.co.nz

Trends for tresses When it comes to hairdressing, there’s never a dull moment. No sooner has a new trend hit the style scene, there’s another one to take its place. Metropol caught up with Earth Organic Hairdressing owner Traci Aylmer to tease the latest looks.
“Last year was really about long groomed waves; this year long
hair is more natural with less structured waves,” Traci says.
“Now we’re seeing more pixie cuts, mullets and the shag taking centre stage, with long hair now getting shorter; it’s exciting as a hairdresser to see these proper hairstyles that utilise some serious styling skill.” If you’re looking to change things up with a striking new colour, last year’s strong vivids are being replaced with pastel vivids. “The application, too, has changed,” Traci explains. “While last year saw a lot of rainbow application, this year colour application is more subtle. “We’re also seeing a lot of colour pops and colour panels – a look anyone can pull off!” Mirroring this new look, Earth Organic Hairdressing is excited to welcome the Fabuloso range of hair care products. “It’s the best thing since sliced bread – bespoke colour made just for you! And despite how new and innovative it is, they come at a really affordable price point.” The team of stylists at the popular vegan hairdresser based alongside Little High Eatery at 181 High Street are all highly experienced and extremely welltravelled, so you know they’re at the top of their hair care game. www.earthorganichairdressing.co.nz

fashion BEFORE WE DIVE INTO THE SS20 TRENDS, TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MIKKO AND HOW IT ALL BEGAN. I launched Mikko in 2013 to offer an extensive range of European hand selected and handcrafted quality shoes for women who wanted stylish footwear, without having to compromise on comfort. I felt there was an opportunity to provide a truly personalised instore experience – our team are professionally trained in fitting and styling.
WHY DO YOU FOCUS ON EUROPEAN BRANDS SPECIFICALLY? Europe is the origin of shoemaking with a rich history of quality and excellent craftsmanship. The brands we choose are familyowned businesses, just like us. Each brand has its own story and every shoe has four things in common: comfort, quality, style and value. Since day one, we have prioritised artisanal quality, unparalleled comfort and timeless design that will last.
playful, ‘60s inspired tones of fuchsia, coral and teal – and Design Emotion – a Nordicinspired, earthy palette, think jute, woodgrain and cork; a textural blend of sophistication and warmth.
Sophisticated style afoot Mikko Shoes’ new season collection is an enchanting offering of energising colourways and sophisticated shapes providing ample inspiration for the warmer months ahead. Metropol spoke with founder and buyer, Michaela, about this season’s trends and the Mikko difference.
WHAT ELSE IS NEW? We see an evolution of the interesting silhouettes, finishes and features introduced in winter – large scale exotic prints, the ‘90s square toe, brushed metallics and the architectural heel. Also new are corsage trims with glamorous oversized adornments.
HOW ABOUT CASUAL FOOTWEAR OPTIONS – ARE SNEAKERS STILL A MUST-HAVE? Sneakers are seasonless! We love fresh interpretations like platform soles, metallic touches, animal prints and retro influences. We’ve also launched DL Sport – an Italian luxury casual sneaker range.
AND FINALLY, IF YOU HAD TO SUM UP THIS SEASON’S TRENDS, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?
AND ONTO THE NEW SEASON, WHAT ARE THE MUST-HAVE COLOURS IN FOOTWEAR THIS SEASON?

o one in Christchurch does what Megan Wolfery does. She holds the title of the only true men’s tailoress in town, with the expertise of 35 years, befitting of the finest Italian suit. “The better the fit, the finer the look,” The Gentleman’s Tailoress advises. Suits, shirts and trouser alterations are her niche. She says it’s worth investing in finefitting outfits in quality fabrics, which can often be handed down from father to son. And beautiful design and fabric deserves bespoke tailoring, to fit comfortably to the body. Megan can let out trousers and jackets a
size, take in shoulders and waists and take up jacket lengths and cuffs, to sit for perfection and comfort. “Taking in the back-leg for tailored fit removes that saggy back seat area.” Megan is set up for the social season marathon, and will enjoy every stitch. Having innate passion for the craft, she also tutors tailoring at Papanui High School adult classes. Getting measured up in The Gentleman’s Tailoress home studio in Mariehau, amongst the well-loved tools of the trade, is where the magic and great conversation happens. vitamins & minerals THE VITAL TRUTH ABOUT
With common symptoms like fatigue, headaches and muscle pain – it can be easy to live unaware of vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Unichem Cashel Head Pharmacist Annabel Turley tells Metropol how treating these issues can be simple – but greatly improve quality of life.
What is a vitamin and mineral deficiency, and how do they happen? “It is when you’re not getting enough nutrients like vitamins and minerals from your diet, or you’re taking medications that deplete the vitamins and minerals in your body. There’s a number of common medications which many people in New Zealand take which can prevent vitamins and minerals being absorbed into the body. Our soil also doesn’t have a lot of minerals in it, so we don’t always get enough from our food. A lot of people don’t understand a vitamin and mineral deficiency can affect your overall health – and it can be so simple to fix.”
Can you tell if you are deficient? “The symptoms are similar to a number of common complaints, like migraines, headaches, muscle pain and cramps, and low energy levels – so it can be hard for the untrained eye to determine what may be behind these common issues. You can get a blood test to see your iron levels or B12, but a lot of vitamin and mineral deficiencies can be treated via the symptoms. Our staff are all trained specifically to spot these symptoms, and to provide appropriate and informed advice.”
How can these issues be treated? “It can be as simple as taking a multivitamin for some people who may be having general signs of vitamin or mineral deficiency – but not all vitamin supplements are created equally. It is best to seek advice from someone who has been trained and upskilled to not only spot symptoms, but to advise on the specific type of supplement. “For example, not all supplements can easily be absorbed by the body so there are different forms which are better for different conditions and to be used with different medications.”

“The wedge heel from country road. So effortless and comfy. Can be worn with a little black dress, or casual with a linen short/skirt. The texture of the shoe is definitely what we are seeing this summer with hair…texture and shape, casual and cool.”

“I’m loving the Trapeze dress from Witchery paired with white sneakers to make a cute day look. It also comes in bright pink for a fancier look! It’s the perfect dress for these warmer days.”
“I’m really excited to be wearing linen this summer. It’s a beautiful fabric to wear in the warm Christchurch weather and easy to style up or wear casually. There will be beautiful colours coming through in linen this season.”

All aboard! Cherished Christchurch attraction the Tramway Restaurant is set to reopen on November 1, just in time for party season after a six-month refurbishment which has polished this 1920s jewel until it shines.
ew Zealand’s only tramcar restaurant, dining while riding in the air-conditioned heritage tram while it passes the streetscapes of Christchurch is a unique experience. Once aboard you’ll receive a variety of the best local cuisine while outside the shifting scenes of Christchurch unfold before you. The experience is perfect for an occasion or romantic dinner, or simply to do something a bit different. Early dinner services, lunches, and high tea services are available for groups on request, and gift vouchers are available to purchase which make for a very desirable Christmas gift. The menu offers a welcome drink and canapé on being seated, followed by entrée, main, dessert, and tea and coffee. SEASONAL SUCCULENCE Mini whitebait patties with a squeeze of lemon will barely last two minutes on the platter. Asparagus is spring in a spear. Serve into bitesized sandwich rolls, adorn an aioli-smeared canapé, or bake into baby quiches.
FASCINATOR-STYLE GARNISH Add colour, such as showy peppery nasturtium flowers and other edible petals. Microgreens are little health bombs that pile up in their greenest finery. Slithers of red pepper, threads of saffron, jewellike pomegranate seeds, all flaunt finesse.
CLASSIC AND CLASSY A cliché of posh nosh is smoked salmon, hot or cold smoked, it’s an intense little morsel. With capers, dill, wakame or wasabi aioli upon homemade blinis or pikelets, they send tastebuds to the finish line. Add caviar or truffle flakes to up the stakes.
Cocktails& canapés F O R R A C E D AY With a decadent tipple in one hand, and a mouthwatering titbit in the other, our taste buds are racing to celebrate Cup Week. Putting on a perfect soiree is all in the creativity, so here is Metropol’s inspiration for cocktails and canapes to carry you through pre- and post-races celebrations. WORDS TRACEY EDWARDES
VEGAN IN STYLE
RACE DAY DELICACIES
From artisan vegan salamis to rich cashew nut patés, plant-world cuisine is glamming it. Splash out on lovingly crafted delicious vegan cheeses upon vegan crackers. Fill spring rolls with colours of the rainbow, and use rich mouth-filling aubergines in dips.
An aesthetically pleasing platter is never out of place – and often disappears at race pace. Combine seasonal fruits and veges, with your favourite cheeses, olives, dips, crackers and fresh bread to create a Pinterest-worthy spread.
MOCKTAIL MOJO Go mad with frivolously fruity concoctions – just omit the alcohol for a virgin variety of the spiked alternative. For a virgin mojito, muddle sparkling water, lime juice, sugar or honey syrup, and dress up with fresh mint and cucumber.
BOUTIQUE SPIRITS Buy a bottle of hand-crafted gin to show off a classic cocktail. Try a French 75, martini, or a sloe gin fizz and decide a winner. Support the spirit of locally made tipples from vodkas to whiskys and dress them up cocktail style, with a glamorous garnish.
FANCY PANTS CHAMPAGNE Pretty and effervescent best-dressed ladies, get creative with easy cocktails of the bubbly kind. Enhance the elegance of fine fizz with springtime splashes such as elderflower liquor, or for a classic Champagne Royale add crème de cassis.

A nosh nirvana
Nestled in the heart of Christchurch on Montreal Street, The Dish is in a class of its own when it comes to Asian fusion cuisine.
K
ey to its success and flourishing popularity is that this is an eatery dedicated to delivering a gourmet experience that surpasses expectations. The creative culinary genius behind the entree Peking duck roti slider with plum sauce, pickled cucumber and iceberg lettuce, clearly is a chef who knows exactly what he is doing. Another firm favourite that patrons keep coming back for is the beef cheek massaman curry with mashed kumara and roti chips. One look at this delectable dish and you know that it’s going to be the most succulent, most melt-in-your-mouth food you have tasted in a while. This is nosh nirvana for a palate that has become jaded by dull, uninspiring cuisine. For those following a white meats diet, how does wok fried chicken with cashew nuts, cherry tomatoes, vegetables
and mushrooms sound? Or a salad composed of seared salmon, grated mango, mandarin, baby spinach, mints, palm sugar and lime? As a symphony is not complete without its grand finale, nor is a meal complete without its dessert. Picture before you, then, a dessert of home-made coconut ice-cream with sticky rice pudding, moongdal, crushed coconut jelly, and caramelised pineapple and peanut. Now you understand why it is essential to book ahead for The Dish. It truly doesn’t get better than this. A travelling feast “H
ave kit, will travel” is the mantra of Twentyfour Catering. Weddings all over the South Island are a speciality, and owner and chef Chantelle Quinn can conjure the feast of your dreams anywhere, often with just two ovens and a barbeque. “We are very versatile and we have said yes to every location so far.” Chantelle works closely with couples to ensure logistics work and menus are personalised to each wedding. Chantelle remembers a groom who asked for his grandmother’s adored salted caramel and pistachio cheesecake, so she created it in minis for his guests. The food is classic French with Kiwi flavours, rustic, often with a lot of protein. Six different meats could feature throughout the reception, which goes down extremely well with rural weddings. “I love seeing a wedding guest in an exquisite dress and fascinator tucking into a lamb cutlet and going back for more.” www.twentyfourcatering.co.nz
Canterbury’s go-to caterers for a real point of difference
“A
glass of rosé is elegant, moreish and sophisticated. It goes with race day,” says winemaker and owner Stephanie HendersonGrant. Her handcrafted wines grace select local wine lists. “Our rosé makes a fresh, pretty aperitif. With hints of cherry and strawberry, it’s crisp and off dry. I love it with smoked salmon blini, prawns, or soft cheese and crackers. The subtle flavours pair so well.”
Six exclusive varietals create Ataahua’s stable of boutique beauties, including oaked chardonnay, riesling, sauvignon blanc, pinot noir and merlot. The Gewürztraminer has aromatics of ginger and lychee that marry well with Asian-influenced flavours. And a boxed rosé 2019 with two Italian crystal glasses, etched with Ataahua’s signature, is a gift that won’t be forgotten. Order online for a prompt, contactless courier delivery.

Boutique bangers and bacon Bangers ‘n’ Bacon – this low-key name covers a range of staggeringly tasty gluten, dairy and allergen-free meat and small goods. For owner Pete Nolan, necessity was truly the mother of invention, and the demand for his innovations led from his home kitchen to the boutique butchery in Ferrymead.
“M
y children suffered from allergies to store-bought goods, but I still wanted to eat bangers and bacon so I started experimenting” he says. “Family and friends loved my creations, and expansion to commercial level became a given.” Upping the ante on the backyard barbeque forever, all the products are made in Christchurch from New Zealand freedom farmed meat and all ingredients are declared on the labels. “From allergy and Crohn’s sufferers to Kiwis looking for amazing quality clean eating, and even a Keto diet, these products have proved amazingly popular,” says Pete.
Current offerings include charcoal BBQ smoked with hickory and applewood beef brisket, dry cured smoked pork belly, dry cured BBQ smoked streaky bacon and dry cured un-smoked loin steaks. The sausage range includes original pork, chipotle pork and beef, English breakfast, hot ’n’ spicy Italian pork and beef, mild Italian pork and beef, peppered pork and original pork, and Pete is working on new sausage flavours constantly that fly the flag for the company’s motto, “tastes so good, you don’t need sauce.” New additions include meatballs, burger patties and the sirloin steaks that have
been through a natural cure to lock in tenderness, flavour, and juiciness. With overseas travel off the menu, Pete is bringing a taste of Italy home with his face bacon - New Zealand’s version of Guanciale - Italian pork jowl or cheeks. The products are available online and instore. On Saturdays you’ll find the Bangers ‘n’ Bacon range at the Mount Pleasant Farmers’ Market, and Sundays at the Arts Centre Market – although Pete recommends pre-ordering through the website for pickup at any of these locations as they sell out fast, and he will also deliver.

Enjoy the tall trees, garden pathways and birdsong, or simply taking time to smell the roses.

conic Canterbury Jewellers has crafted an exclusive Equestrian collection, befitting of a day at the races. Wear a horseshoe ring for luck, a riding-crop broach, or a stirrup pendant. A bracelet of snaffle bit links can highlight the details in two metals, such as rose gold against sterling silver. Diamonds or gemstones studding a horse-shoe clasp make for a bracelet with winning charm and the horseshoe nail curved into a
ring is an eye-catching race day memento. The pieces also make treasured gifts and heirlooms for equine enthusiasts and horse lovers. Choose from the online free delivery service or drop into the store. With at least a week’s notice, Canterbury Jewellers will tailor make in most metals and gems. Not just a workout Fitness for your body doesn’t stop at your shoulders, and the Bodyfix Gym team understand that going to the gym takes you far beyond the classic lose weight, tone up, and strengthen.
e believe in exercise to support mental health as well, and we are really popular for that,” says Owner Moana Williams. “We even have members referred to us by their GP with exercise as part of their prescription.” Privately owned, the longstanding and tightknit team at Bodyfix are there to support members. “We get to know everyone and you are always an individual, never a number. While some gyms focus on attracting new clients, we really value our existing members and have been through many personal joys and tragedies with them,” says Moana. Even more than
usual in the current environment, Bodyfix is a place where worries are left at the door and there is a sense of normality for a while. “So many friendships are made here, existing friendships are strengthened - we laugh hard, and then of course you’ll work your body like there’s no tomorrow,” says Moana. With 45 classes on the timetable for all abilities, the team will design a membership to suit you, plus the Personal Training Team is extremely experienced and always ready to help. There’s also full access after-hours, group challenges, and nutrition advice on the gym’s Facebook group.

ccording to Booking.com, there was a significant increase in the amount of domestic travel Kiwis undertook with 82 percent of the total distance travelled during winter being domestic, compared to only 16 percent during the same 2019 period. While many travellers flocked to Queenstown to enjoy the slopes and the après ski scene,
Arrowtown itself was the tenth most popular place for Kiwis to visit. Interestingly, the data showed when it came to accommodation choice more Kiwis opted for chalets than last year, followed by holiday homes and lodges. Travellers also chose to hit Canterbury spots, with Mount Cook Village, Methven, Arthur’s Pass and Lake Tekapo in the top five.

Exple Akaroa
Spying the land through their portholes last century, French colonisers set their hearts on Akaroa and it’s not hard to see why. To this day, beauty, adventure and hospitality are at the heart of this quaint coastal village. Located on the south-east side of the deep, sheltered Akaroa Harbour, the charming township of Akaroa has a special point of difference – it was the only French settlement in New Zealand. That’s not where beauty ends. With historic buildings, magnificent harbour and passion for fine
food, there is something for everyone in this seaside hotspot. Explore some of the best fish and chips in the South Island, take a cruise and see the marine wildlife or peruse the waterfront stores to your heart’s content. We’ve made a start on your exploratory itinerary here.

cuisine To make it gluten-free Use GF flour, pastry, stock and soy sauce. To make the filling, simmer the lentils in the stock until just tender — about 25 minutes. Drain and set aside. Place the onion, celery, carrot, mushrooms and garlic in a food processor and pulse until chopped quite finely but not mushy. Heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. Add the chopped veges and cook, stirring, for 15 to 20 minutes, until they have reduced right down to a soft golden mush. Add the drained lentils and remaining filling ingredients except the flour, and stir to combine. Cook for another 5 minutes or so over a medium heat. If it seems a little dry, add more tomato paste and a little water and cook a bit more.

Filling ⅓ cup each brown lentils and French green lentils (or ⅔ cup brown lentils), rinsed 3 cups vegetable or chicken-style stock (or use stock powder and water) 1 large onion, roughly chopped 2 stalks celery, roughly chopped 1 large carrot, peeled and roughly chopped 200g Portobello or shiitake mushrooms (or a mixture) 4 cloves garlic, crushed 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 3 tbsp tomato paste ½ cup walnuts, whizzed to a crumb 2 tsp vegetable or chicken-style stock powder ½ tsp fennel seeds ½ tsp cumin seeds 2 tsp soy sauce or tamari 1 tsp paprika ½ tsp curry powder ½ tsp finely ground black pepper ¼ cup plain flour
To assemble 350g rolled dairy-free flaky puff pastry ¼ cup canned chickpea liquid (aquafaba) 1 tbsp sesame or poppy seeds
Add the flour and stir through. Remove from the heat and leave to cool down to room temperature (or put in a bowl in the fridge to speed it up). Line a large baking tray with baking paper. To assemble, lay the pastry sheet/s out on a clean floured benchtop (or roll your own to about 5mm thick). Arrange the cooled filling in a neat log (about 6cm wide) lengthways down the middle. Fold up both sides of the pastry snugly (you might have a big overlap, but that’s okay — pastry is yum). Brush a little water on both parts where the pastry joins. Place seam-side down on the lined baking tray and refrigerate for 20 minutes or so to firm up. Preheat the oven to 180°C fan-bake (190°C regular bake). Slice the chilled log into hearty chunks using a bread knife and a light sawing motion. Brush the rolls all over with the aquafaba and prick the tops a couple of times with a knife. Sprinkle with sesame or poppy seeds. Bake in the lower half of the oven for around 45 minutes, or until the pastry is dark golden brown and puffy. Serve with a dollop of tomato sauce, relish or chutney.

An extremely enthusiastic market greeted their productions, as well as the
nutritional, environmental and welfare values that underpin their farming at Darfield, and prompted a move from stocking speciality shops, restaurants and a farmers’ market to their own space in the centrally located Riverside Market. “It suits with its emphasis on fresh and local, and we’ve added a range of products from producers milking a variety of species including sheep, goat buffalo and A2 cows,” says Sue. Stocking Kaikoura Cheeses, Wairiri Buffalo, Barry’s Bay, Emilio Festa Cheeses, Karikaas, Cranky Goat, and others, the shop provides an opportunity to talk to knowledgeable producers, sample products and learn how best to store and use them. “There are so many hardworking artisans making unique, crafted products. You can sense the love that goes into their goods”, says Sue. Open seven days, The Cheesery also sells artisan cheese-based gourmet toasties and fresh free-range eggs.

A sound summer slumber We all know there’s nothing like a good night’s sleep to make us feel that much better to face the new day ahead, but as our weather starts to warm, we need to cool down our beds, both layer wise and appearance wise. WORDS CÉLINE GIBSON
A
winterweight duvet in the shade of hot chilli does not soothe a tired soul on a sweltering night. So, here’s the lowdown on keeping your bed stylish and your body temp down low this summer.
LIGHTEN THE LAYERS If you haven’t already, think about investing in a lighter duvet or comforter of cotton, linen, silk, or any other lightweight fabric. A lightweight bedspread in fresh colours brings an instant breezy summer feel to rooms. Try a classic white, or mix it up with summery sorbets in pale pinks, purples and cornflour blues.
FAVOURITE FIBRES Keep sheets and blankets in lighter colours too; remember, less heat is absorbed during the day with lighter colours. Layer thinner sheets and blankets to stay cooler or warmer as the temperature changes. The fabric in your sheets makes all the difference and natural options, like linen, cotton, bamboo and silk breathe and both look and feel luxurious.
THROWING SHADE Matelassé (pronounced “mat-le-SAY”) blankets, coverlets, bedspreads, and pillow shams are the perfect layer of lightweight warmth. Matelassé is made from luxurious fabrics intricately woven on jacquard looms in Portugal and Italy. To avoid waking with cold feet, (we all know what that’s like) drape a lightweight wool throw over the end of your bed to keep them warm.

The re-upholstery renaissance If nothing else, Covid-19 has had us focus on tackling those backburner projects. Many have spruced their homes with a new paint job, and while that goes a long way to aesthetic enhancement, shabby furniture can let the whole project down. Artisan re-upholsterer McDonald and Hartshorne shares some wisdom on remedying that situation:
BOLSTER LIMP INNERS AND SEAT CUSHIONS WITH NEW INNERS
A SCATTER OF COLOURFUL CUSHIONS Bespoke new or re-covered cushions in a gorgeous fabric, creates a dramatic change.
And don’t neglect rips or unravelling stitches. The sooner the repair, the better the outcome.
KIWIS LOVE THEIR SQUABS.
HEIRLOOM PIECES DESERVE TO BE PASSED DOWN THE GENERATIONS
Dress bay-windows, patio benches or caravans with new squabs, or refresh tired ones with inner padding or outer fabric for an eye-popping transformation.
A repair to framework, some woodwork stripping, repolishing and a reupholster, soon restores pieces to their original beauty.
McDonald and Hartshorne stock a large fabric range, including superb NZ leathers, leather-look vinyls (plain and textured) and vinyls in many colours. ut our love of timber is based on so much more than its aesthetic value. Of course it looks good, but it’s also strong, long-lasting, durable and easy to work with.
And, as a natural, renewable building material, it gets the sustainability tick as well. Supplying Macrocarpa, Oregon, Larch and other minor species of timber, Loburn
Sawmill is your local home for milled timber, firewood and gardening supplies, located at the end of Fletchers Road in Loburn, North Canterbury. Established in 2016 and run by fourth generation sawmiller, Matt Stuart, alongside his local team, the company specialises in beams, stress graded timber and landscaping supplies, with dry firewood also available. More recently, portable Larch cabins have proven a popular drawcard for the local business. Suitable for offices, sleepouts, additional

While some people love strong lines, others prefer a more handmade look: “If that’s the case, we use handcut stone.” Open by appointment only, Deccan Stone’s yard features examples of the different colours and textures and Paul can talk through colours, thickness and the best profiles for the application. A landscaper by trade, Paul started his career in London in 1990. Arriving back in New Zealand, he started up a landscaping construction business and a stone importing business – operating symbiotically. In the last two years, he’s purchased commercial land and built an office and storage facility to be able to offer retail and trade sales – though he’s still out on the tools for the better part of the day.

A move to the UniMed Building on Gloucester Street in 2018, and connecting with Life in Vacant Spaces, raised Fiksate’s profile, with eight exhibitions since, drawing some of the top echelon of urban artists – AskewOne, Pener, Milarky, Meep, Joel Hart, Jacob Yikes and Dcypher. When not running the gallery and custom framing service, holding workshops, such as Wednesday fortnightly sticker making classes Slapcity, or raising young son Frank, Jenna and Nathan produce their own artworks under the pseudonyms of Jen and Dr. Suits. his otherwise neutral entryway has been injected full of personality thanks to a graphic handpainted mural on the back of the door in Resene Double Foundry, Resene Sante Fe, Resene Dust Storm and Resene Galliano.
And, just by swapping out the background in Resene Double Foundry for Resene Double Alabaster, you can create a totally different look. Another idea is to paint each side of the door in two different colourways using the same palette and pattern.
Make this simple organiser to hold all the accessories you need for your comings and goings by painting a 120cm length of wooden dowel in Resene Double Foundry. Use thick cotton string to create a hanger by wrapping and tying it around the end.
Then, tie one end of several lengths of string and evenly space them along the length of the dowel. Paint a handful of clothes pegs to match your colour scheme and use them to clip lightweight items like hats, gloves and scarves.

Veronica Armstrong from Armstrong Prestige and Paul McCormick from Combined Security Solutions
Prestigious security Designing security CCTV products is a critical job and Combined Security Solutions co-director Paul McCormick doesn’t underestimate its importance.
U
sing the correct camera and location for the field of view required is paramount. This, together with the calculation of bandwidth along with hard disc drive storage of images
and activity detection settings, all determine the end result of an installation. A happy customer and a product that will provide evidence as and when required for years to come is the end goal.
After designing and submitting a proposal for Armstrong Prestige, the Combined Security Solutions team was tasked with installing security CCTV products with a
mixture of 8 and 20 megapixel cameras with a network video recorder. This enabled Armstrong’s authorised users to view live and recorded footage from an easy to use smart phone app, not only for the protection of this prestigious dealership’s assets, but also its staff and clients. Working through the night until 5.30am with lifters and health and safety spotters – so not as to disrupt the busy day-to-day operations of the dealership – was required and achieved with a night shift team of five Combined Security staff. Only being able to conceal security cabling within the wall cavities was a complex task but achieved with excellence. Veronica Armstrong says it was as though the system was installed when the building was built. “The CCTV system Combined Security Solutions has installed is excellent and allows us to review site activity footage as and when needed. “Combined Security was a pleasure to deal with from day one.”

Mastering joinery Custom floating bedside tables, a beautiful oak dresser and a reworked oak bed are just some of the standout joinery created by Murray Hewitt Joinery for a recent project. Known for beautiful and concise kitchens, Murray Hewitt Joinery has showcased its versatility with a full fit out for a new home at Redmund Spur.
n-house designer Donna Weir says it was the little things which transformed the owners’ plans and brief into a cohesive and inspired design showcase. The clients, who own a tile company, wanted joinery which complimented light wood-look tiling throughout – so Donna and the Murray Hewitt team chose dark oak finishes to compliment. Custom joinery completed for the home included the entire kitchen, scullery, office, hallway, laundry, powder room, bathrooms, wardrobes, master bed, bedside tables, and dresser. “Seeing the little things come together made the job special,” says Donna. “The clients had lots of pieces in storage, like an old oak bed that we sanded down and had stained to match the bedside tables we made, and upholstered the headboard. Seeing that come back to life from something which wasn’t a favourite piece to something they love now
was special.” “Overall, the home is simplistic and stylish. It is beautifully interconnected and had beautiful views over Christchurch. Being able to do a full home fit out means we can also help add to the overall feel of a home – and this had definitely been achieved here.” Contact Murray Hewitt Joinery on (03) 343 0360 or via info@mhj.co.nz. www.mhj.co.nz

MIND MATTERS
CURIOUS KIDDIES
The mental health benefits of gardening in general have been well documented in studies; ranging from early-onset dementia to hyperactive children. The studies pinpoint the calming influence of the outdoors, the physical handling of the soil itself, and the satisfaction of growing your own food.
Persuading children to eat anything that’s remotely green and healthy is an uphill battle. However, in case we didn’t know it (!), children have mysterious thought processes and it’s been shown that they’ll happily eat something they’ve grown themselves. So start with simple easy plants like lettuce, radishes, and strawberries (the only fruit that has its seeds on the outside) and you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
VERY VITAMIN-Y The benefits of vitamins are well-known, especially the efficacy of vitamin C in citrus, so that old lemon tree that still produces so vigorously may well hold the key to dealing with next winter’s colds. For all age groups vegetables are high in vitamins A and C, antioxidants, minerals, and fibre to protect against cancer and heart disease. We’re all conscious of what goes into and onto our food these days so growing your own gives certainty about sprays etc.

Growing good health
There’s plenty to love about growing your own fruit and vegetables. Terra Viva’s Peter Worsp tells Metropol about the holistic health benefits of this rewarding pastime.
1. 2. 3.
HEALTHY WALLET Growing vegetables gives you a healthy body and mind, a great sense of satisfaction - and a healthy pocket! That convenient back garden vege patch can save you big bucks, especially at this ‘in between’ season of the year.
4.
QUICK TIPS: Herbs are quick, easy, ultra-useful, and happy in pots if space is limited. Tomatoes are still the leading summer vegetable with great flavour, good health benefits, and such a multipurpose kitchen staple. Heat, consistent watering, and feeding are the keys to success. Love fresh fruit but short of space? Any fruits or vegetables with good colour are classic health providers, including beetroot, blueberries, tomatoes, and red capsicums, and all can be grown in pots. Soil preparation is the key to growth so dig down to a spade’s depth and mix in blood and bone, a dusting of lime and sheep pellets to provide loose and fertile earthworm-attracting soil.

Refined elegance at Millbrook Much of our home-grown talent is acclaimed as world class, but few can back it up to the extent that Mal Corboy of Mal Corboy Design can. Mal is a deserving finalist in the Society of British Interior Designers (SBID) international competition with his incredibly beautiful and clever kitchen design for a Millbrook home.
R
efined, elegant, with a masculine accent, the kitchen is created in Corian in the specialty colourway Sorrel, combined with American Walnut veneer and glass cabinetry, black
lacquer, and black copper. Corian is also used as a thin border around all the cabinetry. “I love the product,” says Mal. “You can be so innovative with it.”
The homeowner frequently entertains corporate clients, so Mal has created a spectacular scullery behind the kitchen accessed through electric doors, which houses a preparation area, twin sinks, dishwasher, oven and steam oven, and two wine fridges. To the left of the kitchen is a designated coffee bar area. Mal also designed the bathroom, where the inverted façade of the smoky grey cabinetry with Corian benchtop is a play on the views of the Cardrona Range. Both kitchen and bathroom encapsulate a simple
sophisticated look, “I am most pleased with how the contemporary interiors compliment the house, yet provide a distinctive singularity,” says Mal. KM Smith Builder brought Mal’s design to life, and Director Kerry Smith says: “The kitchen design fits the lounge and dining space perfectly. It is a generously sized kitchen with scullery, perfect because my clients entertain throughout the year.” The entire house is very highly specced, and Kerry’s clients were heavily involved in every aspect of the build. “Together with my foreman, Gary, we worked through all processes to get our clients the perfect result, and Mal was great to get along with and my joiner Coronet Woodware did a fabulous job creating the kitchen,” says Kerry. KM Smith Builder specialise in high-end homes. “This was right up there in terms of quality. I most enjoy completion stage, where we bring the home and landscape together so that when clients move in, it is perfect inside and out,” says Kerry. www.malcorby.com

Lake front winner Alistair Madill Architects led the team responsible for the fantastic new Watersports Facility on the Lake Wanaka waterfront. The non-motorised watersports facility is designed to cater for community clubs and individuals keen on rowing, lake swimming, triathlon, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding.
he finished facility has received a Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architecture Southern Architecture Award for its sympathy to its surrounds combined with stimulating yet empathic choice of materials. Mostly hidden from the road by sequoia trees on a boat-free two kilometre stretch of water, the location went through a careful selection process. “The project involved significant sensitivities,” says Director and Architect Alistair Madill. “The site sits within the Wanaka Lakefront Reserves Management Plan, required a notified consent process, plus an appeal to the Environment Court. “Physical challenges included flood risk, and the protection of the roots of the two mature sequoia trees on site.” The building itself needed to appear small, yet provide storage for the rowing hulls. Alistair and his team achieved this by splitting the building into three parts. “We created visually strong elements at each end, with a ‘softer’ central
portion,” he says. The materials selected are Corten for no maintenance, and cedar for long life and low maintenance, with internal materials being hard wearing where needed. The Breen Construction Company was excited to be involved in delivering this important community asset. Enjoying the challenges, the construction team particularly appreciated the responsibility of ensuring the root systems of the sequoia trees were safeguarded. Features including the Corten cladding and the unique form of the cedar rain screens demanded attention to detail and collaboration with the consultants to achieve the aesthetic outcomes, and consideration of ongoing building maintenance. Operating in Central Otago and the Southern Lakes for over 80 years, Breen takes pride in its involvement in the development of a wide range of community facilities and diverse work through the wider Otago, North Otago and MacKenzie Basin regions.

anyone else or anywhere in New Zealand, while retaining top quality.” The hotel features 120 rooms, a gym and pool, fourstorey atrium and reception, full restaurant/bar and conference facilities, plus indoor and outdoor seating with stunning views to the north, east and west. “The best thing is the economic benefit to the region: our conservative estimate is 40,000 rooms nights per annum with the majority of visitors new to Kaikoura.” Local Runanga are a financial partner and committed to the success of the hotel, which will be the largest employer in the region with 40 to 60 staff. “We love this project; we’ve had great local feedback and we are thrilled to be a part of the success of the region.”

Alpine luxury reimagined Heritage meets modernity in a stunning, self-sustainable rebuilt Mt Cook station entered into Master Builders House of the Year 2020. The collaboration of RW Design and Lone Pine Building has resulted in a luxury homestead with uninterrupted views of Aoraki Mt Cook.
he idea for the single-level homestead came from its stunning alpine surroundings, and from a desire to use, and reuse, natural and recycled materials. “The location and dramatic landscape along with the exposure to extreme weather conditions combined with the client preference for a practical/ functional farmhouse led to the homestead style solution,” says Robin White of RW Design. The 5-bedroom, 4-bathroom home is a stunning tribute to natural Aotearoa, with many local timbers, included Rimu salvaged from the original homestead, being used. Inside, a great ambience of rugged simplicity creates the perfect place to escape the stress of day-to-day activities. Outside, the vast outdoor areas are more than up to the job of playing host to your guests, not to mention the stunning 360-degree view of South Island high country. illow House, located in Kelvin Heights, has received top honours at the recent Southern NZIA Awards. The north facing, three-storey modern home overlooks the calm waters of Lake Wakatipu. The design takes full advantage of the lake frontage while not dwarfing the surrounding homes lining Willow Terrace. The northern faรงade is the most
eye-catching part of the exterior, as it dominates all the available space on the east and west side of the 305sqm house. The house is broken into three parts and consists of an open living space with lounge, kitchen and dining area. The bedrooms upstairs are part of a metal cladded box, which sits atop two schist walls at the ground floor and a larger than normal concrete garage. Modernity meets tradition – and wins A modern office design within a heritage context and a dental practice with a difference has seen Dunedin and Wanaka-based architecture firm Parker Warburton Team Architects recognised in the recent 2020 Southern Architecture Awards.
he work, completed for WorkSafe New Zealand and Dunbar Wilson Dental, respectively, has been recognised in the esteemed Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) awards with double honours for interior architecture. At WorkSafe Dunedin, the firm transformed the interiors of the 130-yearold John Colours Ltd building using a series of installed boxed which slid below existing beam heights. Meeting rooms and social spaces can close for privacy and fully open up to the main space, creating a flexible floor plan which can adapt to both day-to-day use and larger gatherings. High security requirements were necessary and carefully integrated to achieve a safe yet welcoming experience. Dunbar Wilson Dental embodies a departure from a traditional clinical space. Existing exposed brickwork and polished concrete were added to with glazed partitions and bespoke joinery, all within an ergonomic configuration to allowed for the work of both dentists and dental assistants. Carefully chosen light fittings, furniture and the client’s artwork achieved the unique feeling of a boutique dental practice. With over 40 years developing unique skills in designing residential, institutional and commercial buildings in Otago and nationwide, it is little wonder Parker Warburton Team Architects were able to deliver such results. www.pwta.co.nz

hey have had time to prep so it’s my job - while they have a few wines - to fill the Volkswagen Tiguan from Miles Continental, like a real-life Tetris video game. Luckily for me, the 1395cc Tiguan TSI Comfortline 2WD has plenty of boot space for its $41,385 price tag. The rear tailgate opener also comes in handy. On the road, the cabin space up front is amazingly comfortable and drive wise it handles beautifully – you wouldn’t even notice all the gear loaded up. The 8-inch touch glass screen display with Apple CarPlay is making it easy for the girls to flick between Spice Girls and Beyoncé with the easyaccess USB for charging. It felt gentle to drive and comfortable over a long distance, the lane assist was there but not full on like some brands, and the climate control air conditioning worked impressively well. With parallel park assist, a five-year 150,000km warranty and 17-inch Tulsa alloys making it look pretty, it has all the bells and whistles. Before we got to Maruia for a beautiful platter (Tom Tulk is an exceptional chef) the girls wanted to
boxier in shape with the R-Line having a funkier bumper system than the standard. Now, the audio system is almost identical and what surprised me was the boy’s choice in sound was identical to the girls. With everything packed up, there seemed like more available room in the T-Cross than the Tiguan, but the boys did pack a bit lighter. On the open road it handled well. Which was better? They are almost the same price, they almost have the same features, they performed almost identically. At the end of the day I think it’s going to come down to personal choice. I guess you must test drive it for yourself at Miles Continental.
visit Reefton Distillery to try the Little Biddy gin tasting. Now, this is quite a journey with some windy turns and uphill grades. The Tiguan handled it beautifully, an incredibly smooth drive with the suspension perfectly in tune with the road. Back at Maruia, we parked up next to the pools and relaxed after a good five-odd hour drive. Now here’s the tricky part: repeating the experience but with three teenagers in the Volkswagen T-Cross R-Line. The T-Cross R-Line starts at $43,490, is a 4-cylinder inline turbo at 110kW and 250Nm front wheel drive 7-speed. The exterior is a little

An electrifying ride WORDS NICHOLAS HENARE PHOTOS JACK PREBBLE MEDIA

ut as this beautiful machine glided out onto the motorway and I placed my foot on the brushed alloy AMG accelerator, all bad reminders were left 5.1 seconds behind me as this beautifully lined, refined electric vehicle took off. I had Billie Eilish’s Bad Guy pumping through the 13-speaker, nine-channel, 590w Burmester surround sound system with the interior AMG lighting system turning to a cool blue. Gripping the multi-function Nappa leather sports steering wheel, that gnarly little smile crept onto my face and I knew I was in for a great day on the road. Being fully electric, the EQC has a range of 354km, with the emergency AC-DC adapter for a backup option. The electricity on a low output standard house plug just does not have the juice to power the battery fast enough if you are exceeding, like me, 80km a day. You can recharge at stations around the city, but I highly recommend you install the Wallbox charging system. This is a stunning electric vehicle: a 300kw duel electric engine 0 to 100km on 5.1 (but it feels much faster than that), 4Matic all-wheel drive, 760Nm torque – all with a base price of $142,000. I was going to write shocking to be funny but that would make it sound
bad, and it is not in any way at all. My model had some up-spec roller sun blinds and 21-inch multi-spoke wheels. The multi-spoke wheels are a total stunner as was the diamond white paint job. Now it’s not often an up-spec spins my wheels, forgive the pun, but it really does give a bespoke look to an already outstanding vehicle. Back to back with the standard model there is quite a different look to it and damn it, it is sexier. I took my friend Lisa out to get a woman’s perspective on it. After a lovely lunch at Botanic we took a leisurely drive. Afterward I asked her what she thought. The verdict? “Luxurious with impressive lighting and super sexy rose gold air vents, girls love that.” She went on to wax lyrical: “A gorgeous car, great lines. I absolutely loved it and it’s the first car I’ve been in, in ages, that I would really like to own.” Believe me, this woman knows what she wants so this is a five-star rating. It gets a five-star from me with the reminder that you must install the Wallbox home charging system. If you’re making a choice on electric vehicles this year, please finish with the Mercedes EQC 4matic. It is an electrifying vehicle. Badumdum.

UPPING THE GAME WORDS BEN SELBY
After nine years, we have a new Toyota Yaris. The first of Toyota’s new TNGA “B” Platform, and it happens to be rather nice.
A
s far as looks go, the Yaris is more rakish and aggressive than its predecessor, with a gaping whale shark-esque grill and frowning headlights, it certainly looks like this urban supermini wants to be a sports car. It also sits 10mm lower and the wheelbase is longer by 40mm. My test car was the base GX petrol priced at $25,990. Under the bonnet sits an all-new 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine producing 88kW of grunt and 145Nm of torque.
Transmission comes in the form of a rather slick CVT. Fuel consumption is also rated at a decent 4.9L/100km. The new Yaris gets a fair amount of kit as is standard, such as dynamic radar cruise control, active lane keep assist, eight air bags, and a new Pre-Collision System. The latter works by alerting the driver of crossing pedestrians or cyclists at hard-to-see intersections. The cockpit itself is a mixture of durable
plastics and funky design touches. The driving position is low and comfortable, while visibility is decent all round. My only gripe was slightly intrusive A-pillars. On the move, the three-pot engine is incredibly refined throughout the rev range, and when you select PWR mode, a firm foot can bring the horizon closer at a brisker rate than first expected. The Yaris GX has certainly raised its game and proved the old warrior has plenty of life left in it.

A model makeover The Honda CRV has been with us for many a moon, and for many SUV owners, it remains a crowd favourite. The CRV has been given an automotive nip and tuck for 2021, so what exactly has changed? WORDS BEN SELBY
ell the outside benefits from a few styling tweaks, such as a redesigned front and rear lip, European style exhausts and new look 18-inch alloys. Grunt for all models comes from a 1.5L turbocharged VTEC fourcylinder engine with 140kW/240Nm mated to Honda’s CVT transmission. It is quite a refined power unit, and pulls strongly above 2,000rpm. The range starts at $39,990 for the CRV Touring and tops out at the $51,790 CRV AWD Sport Premium. However, the level of kit you get as standard is quite impressive. Hands Free Electric Tailgate, intelligent dual zone climate control, advanced display audio with 7-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Garmin Sat Nav, LED daytime running lights, parking sensors front and rear, reversing camera and lane watch camera. Honda’s sensing safety gizmos also come as standard across the range. The Sport Premium, my test car, gets AWD, leather trim, and 19-inch sports alloys. The Sport and Sport Premium also get wireless charging for the first time, too. The CRV manages to still drive very nicely, although it is most at home commuting or motorway cruising. All in all, these little tweaks have transformed the CRV from a decent SUV, into a very desirable package.
FUN TO DRIVE
WHEREVER YOU GO.
