aving worked globally as a stylist and menswear designer, she launched her first collection in October last year. Focusing on sustainable, lasting fashion, Long Time Come brought a contemporary edge and exaggerated accents to classic lines and wardrobe staples. “I have always had a passion for clothing and fashion, from the days of helping my nanny in her studio working on clothes for the latest local play as a child, to supporting prominent designers with their own shows at Paris fashion week during the start of my career,” she says. Yet, after investing all her savings into the launch of the brand, the
opportunity seemed somewhat unachievable with necessary funds in excess of $8000. Thompson turned to Give a Little in order to tell her story and ask for the support of wider New Zealand. Through generous donations, along with her own fundraising efforts and maintaining a full-time job alongside running the label, she secured the remaining funds. “The people of New Zealand truly do prove community like no other nation and I will always be eternally grateful for the love, support and belief they have shown me. I am overwhelmed that I finally get to push Out of Comfort to the next level and am excited for what the future holds.”

How do you describe your Jeepers Creepers spring and summer collection? Lots of references to favourite TV shows, be it Looney Tunes or The Young Ones. Sitting as always alongside signature NOM*d looks, like reworked vests, easy fit pants, two way dresses, mesh and cotton t-shirts; all able to be mixed or layered or simply worn solo. Who has been the most inspirational person in your life? Rei Kawakubo, of Comme des Garçons. Since I travelled to Japan in the mid-80s, I have always looked to her for easy garments with unpredictable construction. It’s made me recognise that a brand must have a signature look and is recognisable no matter what season. It makes the garments ageless. What is “the New Zealand Look” and how do you feel about being credited in the media for it? I think it’s a little over-used. We were given that moniker when we showed at London Fashion Week with the NZ Four. Perhaps it’s something to do with dark and the All Blacks? I’m baffled and I don’t know who wrote it, but it has remained to this day! You have Plume in the Central City so tell us your thoughts on Christchurch’s inner city rebuild? It’s amazing how the CBD is coming together, and we are literally across the road from our previous High Street location! I think the locals are still a little apprehensive about going into ‘town’ as the one way streets take some getting used to. Every time we visit Christchurch, from Dunedin, there is a new development happening. We love our space and being in a new building we’ve been
able to create the interior with wonderful light and space. If you could go back and give yourself one piece of advice at the beginning of your career what would that be? We have grown organically with no business plan, I wonder if we should have had one? Not sure that it would have changed our progress. What is the biggest hurdle you’ve had to overcome in your career? Having to justify to our peers in the fashion industry why we have remained in Dunedin, and maintaining a presence. In some ways it’s quite nice to be a little underground and appealing to a fan base, almost a cult following. I imagine living in bigger cities there is a lot more pressure to conform and that’s not really our style. How is working in the fashion industry different today from when you started out? The biggest thing is the instant communication with the digital age we are living in. When we started retailing in 1975 or even producing our own collection in 1986 we pretty much operated with telephone calls and fax machines (until the late 90s). Now we have thrown out the fax, every employee has a computer station and we use many software programs to compile and retrieve data for both manufacturing and retailing. Everyone can access anything from anywhere in the world in less than a minute! What is the most memorable comment on social media you’ve read about yourself? Had a much admired collaborator say she would like to be “just like me when she got to my age”. If you weren’t a fashion designer, what other career would you like to do? I’ve never had any desire to do anything else… even at 65 I don’t know what else I would do! What are some of the things we can look forward to from NOM*d this coming year? No predictions, not really our style… the new is the new, always.

You’ve recently been to Paris, what was the highlight of Fashion Week for you? It was wonderful as always to see the Rick Owens presentation. He has shown at the Palais de Tokyo for several seasons now (outdoors in the huge and amazing courtyard) with models ascending from the top level down the stairway and circling a huge tower structure which was set alight partly through the show. It was so cool - as well as great looks from Rick!

renowned neuroscience educator, Nathan Mikaere-Wallis, a child development specialist from Christchurch. If you recognise the name or perhaps the face, Wallis is well known to audiences throughout Australia and New Zealand for his commentary on child development or, more specifically, how our early interactions with children play a critical
(XY chromosomes). “I think it just shows we’re complex, us human beings. There’s a whole spectrum and we’re not necessarily at one end or another.” So, how much of the temperament displayed on the playground will stick around to adulthood and will the little leaders of the show be the future Jacinda Arderns of the country? In short yes, but it depends on whether there are any other significant developments (such as trauma) in the child’s life. While your personality can change, your temperament doesn’t. “Temperament plus experience equals personality,” Wallis says. So, while those little playground divas are likely to remain leaders throughout their lifetimes, they are likely to become more refined in their approach to leadership through their life experiences. As an educator – plus a father and now a grandfather – Wallis has always held fast to the belief that the first 1,000 days of a child’s life are absolutely critical to wellbeing because, while they say ‘it takes a village to raise a child’, it’s preferable, he says, for the village to wrap around a dyadic, or ‘one on one’ relationship. While many think young children learn their social skills by being put into a preschool environment early, in actual fact, focusing primarily on creating a secure relationship with one key caregiver is the best foundation on which to build social skills. “We should be doing everything we can to support kids staying at home.” While he has a busy year ahead of him, including a trip to Saudi Arabia to teach academic staff about brain development alongside Harvard educators and a new documentary series for TVNZ, Wallis plans to continue doing his parenting /brain talk talks around the country. “We continue getting 1,000-1,500 people turning up. They want to be informed but not told what to do. I simply use the research to inform.”

role in defining their outcomes. He’s been a university lecturer, he’s made podcasts and documentaries, written books and he travels around the world giving talks on the developing brain and positive parenting. “I’ve always had a fascination with human beings,” he says. “We’re the most advanced thing in the multiverse and also the most complex. And I’ve always loved children.” The Secret Life of Girls has been a particularly fulfilling experience he says and, although the feedback from viewers around the country was surprise over the competitive and even sometimes aggressive nature of the young girls on the show, Wallis wasn’t in the slightest. Filmed to correspond with the 125th anniversary of giving women the right to vote, what the show has been most successful at is upending gender stereotypes. There is a general perception that men are more practical, aggressive and risktaking, while women are more emotional, cautious and better at multitasking. Perhaps that’s so, but how much of that behaviour is down to social conditioning? “Research indicates these behaviours are much more learned than we think,” he says, pointing to research that has been done on babies in blue and pink stretch and grows and how the adults whose charge they are under, treat babies dressed in the different colours quite differently, making it hard to separate nature from nurture. “Clearly we (males and females) are different hormonally, but the concept has been oversold in the media. We have the same traits but in differing amounts. Rather than men coming from Mars and women from Venus, it’s like Mars and Venus crashed and overlapped.” Rather than a binary male/female thing, Wallis says American Indians have long recognised seven types of gender and, in fact, now that we can read genes, we know there are many more variations than just the female (XX chromosomes) and male

n the Gazco Skope range, your fireside glow is unique to your space, with the fuel bed lit by a choice of 13 different colours. Change the ambience at will to suit the mood, and the fuel bed lighting can also transition through each vivid colour for a gradually changing spectrum that provides the ultimate wow factor. The fires can be customised further still, with the three-dimensional flame displayed in natural amber, striking blue, or even a combination of the two. Downlighting and uplighting enhance the luminosity. The revolutionary range is available with a fuel bed of realistic logs to offer the traditional woodfire aesthetic, and when positioned on the bed of clear and grey pebbles looks just like a real fire. Alternatively, the crystal-ice effect fuel bed creates an ultra-contemporary effect. Gazco Skope electric fires come in inset and outset styles in a range of sizes, and you can add the Trento surround suite. You can see three examples of these stunning fires in action at Simply Heat’s extensive showroom at 95 Byron Street. Simply Heat is also pleased to announce the arrival of two new sizes of the everpopular Escea gas fires. Joining the mid-sized DS1400 is the smaller DS1150 and the larger DS1650, and each model comes in single, or double-sided versions.

Ottie Schwartz 32 Promotions manager 1) A great story! 2) The ability to speak to animals, so when I’m hungover on a Sunday morning I could politely ask the birds to pipe up elsewhere. 3) I hesitate answering this because you don’t know the troubles others are facing behind closed doors… at least I am the devil I know. But the short answer is Jay Kay – Jamiroquai Singer because of his car collection. 4) Swim with Great White Sharks; poke lava with a stick; see something that takes my breath away. 5) The city is getting more and more exciting so all sorts, but Botanic Gardens in the summer (outdoor cinema).

1) Trust, friendship, niggly. 2)The ability to time travel and pause time, so I can use it for the next question. 3) Can I trade back? Because I really like my life at the mo! If I can trade back to my own life then someone in a super powerful position who possibly isn’t using it as well as they could. But I’d need lots of help and time - hence previous answer. 4) Travel; Go to Tomorrowland (music festival in Belgium); raise children of my own. 5) Going to events in Hagley Park in the summer with friends (wine, food and music festivals).

1) Stressful but fun.
2) Teleporting so I could travel the world without jetlag and enduring cattle class.
2) I’d like to wake up tomorrow and be able to get my commercial pilot’s license.
3) Megan Markel, because she’s topical, beautiful and is an amazing well rounded aspirational female; an inspiring role model in my eyes! 4) To visit the last continent in the world I haven’t been to yet - Antarctica! To learn fluently another language; to watch an NBA game In the USA (front row next to Leonardo DiCaprio… dream big right?).
3) I wouldn’t trade lives with anyone, I’m pretty happy being me. 4) Travel the world with someone amazing; do a hot lap in a Maserati and race a McLaren; meet Chris Pratt. 5) Go out to an amazing restaurant with wicked mates or barbecue on the deck. Biking and snowboarding.
5) Start at The Tannery for brunch then op shopping followed by a visit to Willowbank - to feed my obsession with animals, then dinner down The Terrace (with some uncoordinated dancing to follow later in the night). Metropol October 25, 2018 17

Fendalton Retirement Village residents Shirley Edwards and Lex Dyet enjoy a catch up in the village’s communal lounge.
One big family It’s been something of a hidden secret in Fendalton, but the residents of Fendalton Retirement Village love its boutique size, its garden surroundings and its truly family atmosphere. The staff of the village are especially attentive to those residents who require a little more individual care.
here are different levels of care at Fendalton for people who no longer wish to cook for themselves, or who may need assistance with showering and other personal routines. The 24 hour rest home offering permanent, respite and day care, comprises 35 larger than standard single rooms, each with ensuite bathroom, private phone and access to television. Quality and continuity of care for all rest home residents is assured by a registered nurse and trained health care assistants. Should someone require hospital level care, residents at Fendalton have priority to Elmswood Hospital. There are also 12 larger rest home level studio care suites, each with ensuite bathroom, kitchenette and sufficient room for a dining table should residents like to start their day with a leisurely breakfast in their room. Lunch and dinner are served in a private dining area for 12 people. Several studio care suites step out into the gardens. There’s fun to be had at Fendalton with a large communal lounge where there is plenty of entertainment and activities taking place, like the recent Mad Hatter’s Tea party, which was simply hilarious and enjoyed by everyone involved. T
he 2009 Vintage was being accompanied by a long lunch and conversation about the hospitality industry flowed amongst those lucky enough to be invited by David Kininmonth from Hancocks Wines and Spirits. Conversation turned to new developments, new operators. Each person at the table represented a good slice of hospitality within the four avenues and having been involved with a lot of them for years the thought struck me that town is an ever-evolving beast; that moving forward in post-quake Christchurch is going to be an exciting journey and we should make sure we are aware of what’s going on. So welcome to my endeavour to enlighten you on things that are happening within our beautiful garden city. The weekend past saw me at the Welles Street, Octoberfest. How wonderful to see a well organised, thoroughly enjoyable event. The environment totally lent itself to a great evening. Divided into two events on the Saturday and one on the Sunday, it gave you the chance to get dressed up in “traditional” German beer drinking apparel,
let your hair down and dance, sing, eat and of course, drink great quality beer. It was the type of event we want to see much more of and Tom and Daniel from Welles Street look likely to provide much more of the same. If you haven’t checked out the venue, do. I went to the opening of Christchurch’s brand-new entertainment hub, EntX, and of course the wonderful new HOYTS seven screen flagship cinema complex and the first large scale cinema complex to return to the central city. Partnering with a local developer and employing over 60 locals, HOYTS EntX is offering Cantabrians the ultimate movie going experience. Guests will be able to enjoy a range of offerings including HOYTS LUX, a premium in-cinema experience alongside the open candy-bar Treat City and Arties Bar and Café serving delicious hot and cold food. The Cinema is rich and lush and obviously the next step in entertainment. Such a pleasure to see something like this opening in the inner city to bring life and vibrancy back. “We are extremely proud to be among
EntX is the first HOYTS site in the South Island to offer the premium HOYTS LUX offering. A unique and exclusive cinema offering, HOYTS LUX offers customers a sophisticated bar, in-cinema service at the touch of a button and an extensive wine list as well as a bespoke and exclusive menu designed by celebrity chef and judge on TVNZ 2’s My Kitchen Rules, Manu Feildel. I will be catching up with Manu for an indepth look at not only how he constructed the menu but also to get a look at what’s happening in his world as a celebrity chef. Keep an eye out for the interview in an upcoming Metropol. Catching up with Andrew Trevelyan from Ōtākaro, the company in charge of the anchor projects for the “New” Christchurch, I was greatly enthused with the prospect of what’s coming in the next ten years. With five goals; a green city, compact central core, accessible, stronger built identity and a place to live, work, play, learn and visit, I was surprised by how much I didn’t know about where we are going. This knowledge is easily accessible, but it took an hour chat by Andrew to really get to know how exciting this will all be. From greenspace engagement, to the CTV site, to the new stadium and library, there is so much to take in. Every Cantabrian should check out the website, www.otakaroltd.co.nz, to get just the tip of the iceberg on what to expect. Exciting times! As I’m going to make this a regular column, I invite you to let me know of any exciting things happening in our wonderful new central city. business profile
Brokers behind the business Boutique business brokers Tabak Business Sales understands that the decision to put your cherished business on the market is about much more than the numbers on the bottom line.
P
artner Damien Fahey says, “Tabak does it differently to other brokerages. We take the time to get to know our clients really well. We can settle them down about their decision if needed, we thoroughly explore the drivers of the desire to sell, and examine all the options.” Damien says they do come across owners who ultimately just need a really good break, “Once we’ve talked they realise they need a decent holiday, and then they come back to their business with fresh eyes and enthusiasm.” There is a real sense of social good in Tabak’s approach, which is focused on solving problems and creating
opportunities. “It’s a buzz when you see the vendor able to make the move to their next passion or life phase, and the new owner of the business full of excitement and energy about the opportunities ahead,” Damien says. Whilst Tabak has five offices nationwide, the South Island team has three brokers in Christchurch and one in Queenstown, and all have the experience that comes from running businesses themselves, along with qualifications in accounting, sales and business analytics. “There are a fair few grey hairs between us, but clients appreciate knowing they are in experienced hands,” Damien says. Repeat clients are the norm. “We take
a lot of time over every business and understand that generally 60 to 95 percent of the value is in the good will. We defend that business good will, and ensure it is protected and passed on,” Damien says. Integrity is key: Tabak does all its own due diligence and won’t broker a business if they cannot genuinely see the value in it. Damien says the three elements essential for excellent business brokerage are relationships, analysis of the business, plus wordsmithing. “You need to create a compelling document, setting out the information memorandum or company profile saying what it has done, where it is going, and identifying the new opportunities.” An expert in the local market, Tabak’s niche is sales of businesses valued between $300,000 to $5 million, or generating more than $100,000 in owner profit, and excluding accommodation such as backpackers or motels; plus it is very selective about hospitality. Rather than commercial buildings, it’s about selling plant, stock and intangibles, or goodwill. Nationwide the company shares a database of more than 4,000 potential buyers. “Advertising is often not necessary and protecting confidentiality is a huge part of what we offer,” Damien says. “We love what we do, our business really is more than a job; it’s a calling – and our clients will testify to that.” Metropol October 25, 2018 27

or Jason Scott, this taste has become a love affair and he and his team at Artisan Bakehouse Ltd are proud to be providing New Zealanders with the yummiest blend of garlic bread and butter around. “We have come a long way since we started 12 years ago,” Jason says. He and his tightly knit team have given their all over a decade to give customers delicious garlic bread, garlic rolls, garlic butter, sweet chilli rolls and sweet chilli butter. “We make thousands of loaves a day, exporting them around the country to supermarkets and consumers,” Jason says. Every loaf and roll is made with love and passion. Artisan Bakehouse is also doing its bit for the environment by getting rid of all tin foil packaging. Simply pop them on a baking tray and heat to perfection. As an added bonus, Artisan Bakehouse works with Three Boys Brewery every Friday to give you its famous Beer Bread Friday. Fashionable flair in Hanmer Kjole’s mother and daughter team have bought the polished casual flair of Danish designer labels direct to Hanmer Springs.
I
t’s been a successful first year for Kjole in the new Boulder Point Precinct. Owner Stephanie Suckling recently returned from Demark where she visited the Panorama Berlin, hailed as Europe’s fashion market place and met with the directors of Kjole’s eight exclusive labels. An emerging trend Stephanie noticed was for organic ranges such as sweatshirts and t-shirts, using organic cotton and dyes. Wide leg jeans were also hot. Next year, it’ll be daughter Penny’s turn. Kjole’s exclusive Denim Hunter jeans are proving to be popular among customers. They are a skinny leg in 7/8 length with zips, great option for shorter legs, featuring three different colours, white, black and denim. There is also a new range
of curvy jeans from the Danish label designed to stop gaping at the waist! With fashion and racing a perfect match, Kjole will celebrate Melbourne Cup Day with its neighbour, Salt and Pepper café, in the Boulder Point Precinct. The fun, food and fashion parade takes off at 1pm – a chance for ladies to dress up and enjoy the fashion parade featuring labels Denim Hunter and Kaffe. Hairdresser Kay Brydon will host a presentation on teaming hair colour and style with summer’s winning fashion. Tickets are available through Eventbrite and the Facebook page: Melbourne Cup 2018. Kjole summer hours are 9:30am5pm Monday to Saturday and 9:30am-4pm Sundays, or online at www.kjole.co.nz.

fashion JUDGE KAREN WALKER WITH MILLIE PUX-ASKEW
New Zealand’s next top designer A 23-year-old design student from Wellington, Millie Pux-Askew, has just been propelled into the fashionable fore, as the winner of Ballantynes’ first Emerging Designers Competition.
M
illie was chosen from a pool of six finalists who each showed three completed looks at a runway show during Ballantynes’ Fashion Week. The judges were global fashion designers Karen Walker, Rachel Easting and Anjali Burnett of Twenty-seven Names, Remix Magazine fashion photographer Dave Richards and Ballantynes’ Head of Buying Megan McKee. Millie, whose looks were inspired by a romanticised view of summer and winter, says the win was unexpected. “I’m pretty happy... it is great to see all the work that I put in pay off and this win means I can continue working on this theme and develop a full collection.” She will receive more than $28,000 in materials, publicity and mentoring from some of New Zealand’s most successful fashion industry insiders and has the opportunity to launch her debut fashion collection with Ballantynes’ Contemporary Lounge where it will be sold instore and online.
The iconic Christchurch department store launched the competition in June, attracting entries from all around New Zealand. The six finalists were Millie along with Hannah Stack (Christchurch), Ella van Beynen (Christchurch), Michelle Shang (Auckland), Emily Verhaaren (Auckland) and Amy Jin (Auckland). Ballantynes’ Head of Buying Megan McKee says their collections reflect the enormous pool of up and coming design talent in New Zealand. “We were blown away by the standard of these collections. There were some highly creative concepts and strong technical skills. We have no doubt each finalist has a future in the fashion world.” Megan McKee says Millie’s work was a stand-out. “The judges were impressed by her fabric choices... she used linen and oilskin which brought her summer and winter theme to life. We are looking forward to working with Millie to finesse her label and are excited to see what she does with this amazing opportunity. We have no doubt she’ll join the long list of Kiwi designers who produce some of the best fashion in the world.”

Breast reduction alternative Although a large bra size can be portrayed as desirable, the reality for many women is that large breasts can cause physical and emotional discomfort. Carrying the extra weight can result in back, neck or shoulder pain and can limit physical activities.
S
ome women also experience feelings of self-consciousness and struggle to find well-fitting clothes. The good news is Dr Grant Bellaney, founder of the Encore Cosmetic Clinic, offers women an alternative to traditional breast reduction surgery, with extremely good results. “Most breasts consist of 40 to 60 percent fat, so the removal of some of that fat through a procedure called tumescent liposuction can give a significant reduction in breast size,” he says. While traditional breast reduction surgery is carried out by plastic or general surgeons, breast reduction procedures using tumescent liposuction have been developed and practised by dermatological surgeons such as Bellaney, who are skin and fat specialists.
The procedure is suitable for all ages, particularly those over the age of 35. It was first used in the 1980s and has an outstanding safety record, he adds. “The procedure also has huge advantages over traditional surgery. It is safer because it is performed under local anaesthetic, which has fewer risks than surgery that is carried out under general anaesthetic. It is also simpler and less painful than surgery and the recovery time is far quicker. “There are also fewer side effects and less scaring. With traditional surgery all patients will have visable scaring of some degree, whereas little or no visable scaring is present with this technique. With traditional surgury about 10 to 15 percent of patients can experience a loss of sensitivity in the nipples or an inability
to breastfeed afterwards. With tumescent liposuction, the risk reduces to less than one percent.” Dr Bellaney was the first specialist to introduce tumescent liposuction to the South Island and has continued to develop and refine the procedure ever since. “These incisions are virtually scarless and heal very quickly, usually without needing sutures. It’s a day procedure, so women can go home afterwards and are usually back to their regular routine within a few days.” Dr Bellaney has successfully performed this procedure on hundreds of women over the last 10 years. Call his modern clinic at 248 Papanui Road in Merivale to make an appoinment, phone 03 356 0214 or visit the website www.encorehealth.co.nz.

Summer’s Selections With a heatwave predicted, Made in the Shade is prepared. Ali has stocked up with lots of gorgeous, cool, breathable natural fibres – cottons, silks, viscose, and loads of lovely linens. “Last year the cool-to-wear linen pieces were flying out the door during the long hot summer.”
B
ittermoon has brought linen stories to their collection, as has Ping Pong, with flattering dresses with pockets. Almost too good to be true, the modern natural linen-look does not need ironing. Last summer at the Beckenham boutique, it was also all about the Made in Italy collection – with romantic pieces that flatter and float over the silhouette. As well as the much-adored local labels, such as Anne Mardell and Optimum’s cotton knits, there are Ali’s famous European faithfuls. The perfectfitting Lisette L pants from Canada have feminine, versatile patterns and plains – unique to the label. This summer is particularly exciting,
with feminine colours and prints such as turquoise, coral, navy backgrounds, ditzyprint and spring-garden florals and bold tropical blooms – and in contrast, chic and stylish plains. Colour is getting creative, as in the striking new Matisse dresses. “Cute bomber jackets, in summery fabrics, like lace, are back in vogue – great to jazz up a dress. And most labels have introduced an easy, relaxed fitting, with styles to suit every shape,” Ali says. All personality types and age groups will find a new favourite at Made in the Shade, 151a Colombo Street, Beckenham, open Monday-Friday 9:30am-5:30pm and Saturdays 10am-4pm, or visit www.madeintheshade.co.nz.

A safe option A safe, non-toxic and highly effective alternative to DEET-based insect repellent products is a breakthrough ingredient that is revolutionising the industry, says James Fraher, of locally-owned company, Skin Technology.
P
icaridin, an active ingredient produced to mimic black pepper plant properties, has a broad efficacy against various
insects and is recommended by the World Health Organisation as a repellent of choice for malaria prevention.
And unlike DEET (which has a chemical name, N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide), it does not dissolve plastics and has exceptional cosmetic properties – it’s gentle on the skin, non-greasy, non-sticky, and smells nice. “Most importantly, it’s non-toxic and safe for your whole family to use, including pregnant women and children from six months old.” James formed Skin Technology 11 years ago when he heard about the ingredient, which dominates the insect repellent market in Europe. He collaborated with local manufacturers to create a premium product, containing 25 per cent picaridin – the highest strength available worldwide – offering protection for up to 14 hours after application. “It really works and is the ideal alternative for consumers looking for a healthier, safer option.” The company’s product range also includes a wash-in insect repellent for clothing, aloe vera gel and a highperformance sunscreen that stays on the skin longer than regular sunscreens. “Our sunscreen spray contains an ingredient that slows the product from degrading and won’t sweat out. Anyone who uses this sunscreen raves about it and won’t go back to anything else.” Visit www.skintechnology.co.nz for more information and to order online.

Wine & Artfor aAuction good cause The Canterbury Medical Research Foundation (CMRF) Wine & Art Auction celebrates its 25th year on 1 December, with its annual Wine & Art Auction at Rydges Latimer. Since it began 25 years ago this flagship event has raised more than $1.6 million for research right here in Canterbury.
C
MRF is one of the largest funders of medical research in Canterbury and over the last 58 years with the generosity of donors, has granted more than $27 million to numerous research projects. The research it has supported has not only had significant impact on patients in Canterbury but also throughout New Zealand and globally. CMRF gifts a guaranteed $100,000 to each year’s designated Wine & Art Auction recipient. Some past recipients include University of Canterbury’s Professor Julia Rucklidge whose research encompasses the effects of micronutrients on adult mood disorders
and Professor Frank Frizelle’s University of Otago, Christchurch team research into bowel cancer (especially vital as Canterbury has one of the highest rates of any region in New Zealand). This year’s recipient of the Wine & Art Auction is The Christchurch Health and Development Study which has been in existence for 40 years. During this time the team has followed the life progress of a group of 1,265 babies born in Christchurch during mid-1977. The study team has had significant impact and published over 480 scientific papers, reports, books and book chapters describing the 40-year life history of the cohort.
The research team’s studies to date have included: • The effects of parental smoking on childhood respiratory illness • The impacts of low level lead exposure on cognitive development and behaviour • The effects of childhood sexual abuse on educational achievement and psycho-social adjustment • The impacts of adolescent cannabis use on educational achievement and mental health • The effects of the Canterbury earthquakes on psychological wellbeing This event is supported by some of New Zealand’s favourite visual artists who provide an incredible offering of artwork for auction. The art work is complemented by a stunning array of collectable wines for auction which showcase the best in the vintner’s art from New Zealand and beyond. Well supported by Canterbury businesses the main auction and the silent auction include experiences and exquisite donated items. Limited tickets are still available from colin@cmrf.org.nz: $1,600 per table of 10 and $160 for a single ticket. To make a donation instead to support the Foundation’s vital work please visit www.cmrf.org.nz. Metropol October 25, 2018 47

As a purchaser you will need to consider the following: Fencing – Is it in a suitable condition for what you intend to use it for? (Stock proofed, electrified, ease for movement of stock and/or machinery.) Water supply – Is it on a scheme? A well? Monitored? Shared? Proof of water quality? Number of tanks? Can I irrigate? Easements/Covenants - Shared driveways, water rights, drainage, services, are there any restrictions for use? Septic tank systems – Type? field drains/ transpiration lines or soak pit?
Dream-Maker
Internet, cell coverage, sheds and shelter are all other things to consider as well. Always look to see what the neighbouring properties are doing. How many stock units are they carrying? What is the pasture quality and could you lease the land out? So much information is required and needs to be taken into consideration. If set up correctly a lifestyle property can be a fabulous choice for you and your family and does not have to be a burden! Contact Marijke Sheppard on 027 461 6127 or drop into Ray White Morris and Co, Level 1, 188 High Street, Rangiora.
Buying a lifestyle property can be the dream for a lot of Kiwis seeking the pleasure of rural living - but beware! There are pitfalls for the uninitiated and that’s where knowledge and experience of a trusted, helpful real estate agent can be your best asset.

A Taste of Thailand Here is what you must do if you are after the most intimate Thai dining experience in a beautiful and idyllic setting. You head out to 56 Fletchers Road, Loburn, and call in on Lemongrass Authentic Thai Cuisine.

emongrass is the result of an 11 yeardream for manager and chef Sriamorn Reavill and her husband Paul.

relaxed country dining setting. “I can’t believe how lucky we are to have this. This has been my dream for so long,” Sriamorn says, grinning from ear to ear. “I have always wanted to allow people to experience the same home cooked Thai food that I had growing up.” Step inside and you can’t help but marvel at the design and layout of the restaurant. The seating, floor, tables and interior décor is of the highest quality, making it even more remarkable when you consider that the design and build was completed with very little help. During your meal you are served not only by Sriamorn, but her children too. This is a family business after all. They have been taught all the ins and outs of food preparation, the menu and know the value of quality customer service. So relaxed is the atmosphere that if no bookings are planned for day, Sriamorn might be out shopping, sourcing all the finest ingredients for her special blend of Thai cooking. Delicious starters such as Sticky Glaze Pork, Fresh Prawn Spring Rolls and Miang Kum always go down a treat, while the mains are prepared with an overwhelming degree of love and dedication. Whether it’s a Thai Beef Salad, Larb Moo Pork, Panang Beef Curry or a Massaman Chicken Curry, Sriamorn is a natural. A great range of desserts and chilled beverages are also on offer but it’s BYO if you favour something alcoholic. Thanks to the beautiful surroundings, Lemongrass has hosted a few functions in its time. So to find out more about this, and to book a table for your nearest and dearest, give Sriamorn a call 03 310 3102 or email lemongrass.loburn@gmail.com. You’ll be happy you did!

canterbury bride Love Me Tender For Andy and Donna White renewing their wedding vows was “a hell of a lot more fun” than their first wedding.
I do (still!) For some married couples saying “I do” once is enough, but more and more people are choosing to celebrate their love with a wedding vow renewal ceremony.
O
ver the years the vow renewal ceremony has grown in popularity, with couples opting to cement their bond and recommit to their partner. Whether a romantic gesture (or simply an excuse for a party), it’s a great way to mark an anniversary. If you’re super-traditional, you might plan to revisit the place where you originally got married but then again, you might like to enjoy a holiday overseas and renew your vows on a tropical beach somewhere. Ceremonies can incorporate family and friends and planning can be a lot less stressful than the first time around as it’s usually more intimate and personalised.
The main thing to understand about your vow renewal ceremony is that, unlike your original wedding ceremony, there are no legalities or strict traditions involved. You can celebrate as you see fit and how you like! When it comes to the allimportant vows, you have the option of re-reading your original marriage vows, or writing something entirely new. Ceremonies often end with rededication rings and these can be entirely new rings or your existing marital rings with a new engraving on. In a world where many marriages don’t last the distance, you don’t need much of an excuse to celebrate the fact that you are making it and making it together!
I
t was the best day ever,” Donna laughs. Recently the couple celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. “We talked about the fact that not many of our friends were still married, so we thought it was worth celebrating.” A four week trip to the United States provided the perfect opportunity with the couple booking a service at the famous Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas complete with an Elvis impersonator who walked the experienced bride down the aisle. While Donna hadn’t prepared vows, Andy had – which brought her to tears. “He wrote a poem, it was lovely.” He also surprised her with a diamond ring. The couple’s best friends also joined them in Las Vegas for the occasion – and took care of the groom’s attire. “I had a beautiful dress made from a friend of mine (who has cancer) but on the day [of the wedding] I sent Andy out to get a suit jacket. He came back dressed like Richard Gere from An Officer and A Gentleman.” The couple’s first wedding in Timaru on August 6, 1988, was very traditional with Donna sporting a Princess Di-style ensemble. The couple have three sons who were delighted to hear their parents had renewed their wedding vows. “We will definitely do it again in another 30 years – if we’re still here.” Metropol October 25, 2018 51

Dream Dresses
Subtle colours and versatile designs, which are playful yet romantic, will appeal to brides this wedding season.
B
rides of Merivale owner Lisa Dermott says this season’s wedding dresses will again be subtle in colour with metallic golds, silver and platinum featuring. Brides are also opting for adaptable dresses with detachable pieces like sleeves, trains, and overskirts, which can be worn during the day and night. “They can be two very unique looks but save brides having to buy two dresses,” she says. When it comes to styles, anything goes. For the modern bride, 90s silhouettes, jumpsuits, sheer fabrics, backless styles and separates will trend giving brides the opportunity
to show off their personality. Chicly hidden pockets are becoming popular allowing brides to keep personal things close to them on their big day. Simple and sleek, slip wedding dresses are perfect for the minimalist bride and can look sophisticated with any neckline. For the traditional church weddings, big skirts with elegant bodices and plenty of tulle will feature and luxurious lace isn’t disappearing anytime soon. Whatever dress you decide on, remember it should suit your shape and ultimately be comfortable, allowing you to move through your special day with ease.

Salon staff at V for Hair and Beauty, Merivale, are adept at administering increasingly popular keratin smoothing treatments. Some clients find these keratin interventions life-changing.
O
Crafting memories
wner, Vicki Ogden-O’Fee describes her keratin smoothing treatment as distinguishable from a chemical straightening process that’s found in some countries, in that the former doesn’t involve potentially dangerous chemicals. Instead, keratin smoothing is natural and gentle. It relaxes, curls, strengthens and repairs damaged hair. A beautiful side-effect is the sheen it adds to dull, dry hair. The blow wave takes frizz out of curly or wavy hair and bulk out of unmanageable, rebellious hair. In short, keratin smoothing could be dubbed the ultimate treatment for salon-perfect hair every day. Included in this are targeted treatments for differing hair types. The results of a keratin-smooth will last for up to four months. Plus, these gorgeous effects are cumulative, with repeated smoothing applications.

I
t’s usually something bigger than hunger that drives us to eat out. Yes, there are different world cuisines that we individually gravitate toward, but eating out is all about the vibe. The tastes and tummy-filling are only marginally more crucial than the entertainment of watching life unfold, and of how the dishes are presented. Whose menu reads ‘beef stew’ anymore? Not that many. There might be reference to an exotic location, or a less common protein incarnation. There’s an increasing trend toward accommodating differing dietary requirements, which can only mean progress. The conventional favourites are marketed with a twist. It’s more exciting. The menu-read is primary. A beautifully nominative dish will have your salivary glands working out. Dishes with garnishes (now there’s a throw-back-word) are a case in point. The predictable’s gone. It’s not often fruit jellies or jams. If there’s gooseberry on the menu, it’ll be couched as ‘Gooseberry afterthought’ or ‘Gooseberry sheep’s ankle’, and any jam will feature something from forest or field, or a woman’s name. Try ‘sorrel jam,’ ‘rosemary jam’ or ‘smoked marjoram jam’ (try saying that fast). Good menus now found in our fab re-establishing city will reference everywhere in the world you could think of. Chefs of Christchurch might soon start referencing our own Kiwi regions as well as the far-flung. Our wine is proudly known by district,
and local regionality in dishes might next become more of a thing. It’s happened with paint colours, after all. We already have Bluff oysters and Kaikoura crayfish, but how about Dunsandel fennel-cakes or Oamaru Tiramisu? That has a certain ring. Or Puhoi blackberry cheesecake? We might ramp up the referencing of our own Otautahi neighbourhoods. Canterbury has some evocative placenames, whether in English or Maori; even French. Let’s get regionally specific with dishes! Now our town is humming again and establishments are filling up with live music and clientele, it’s the places with creatively low lighting, quirky unexpected décor and high comfort levels that are drawing the diners. If lighting’s low enough in the bathrooms, we can indulge in thinking we look very fine, even in the wake of too much food and liquid. This is all part of our city’s re-boot; the trend toward creative, left-field ideas. It started in the immediate earthquake aftermath of 2010 and 2011 with seemingly random-themed largescale art on buildings and in vacant lots. Dining is all about feeling good, and increasingly, about marketing itself to all of our senses. Satisfaction is about the flavour of the sum, including colour, texture, saltiness, surprise and delight. Canterbury restauranteurs and chefs, we love that you’re not constrained by straitjacket foodie traditions. Stay experimental!

Salmon Supreme We are all aware of the importance of fish in our diet, but salmon, super-endowed with Omega-3 benefits, reigns supreme in joint, muscle and cardiovascular support, and also cognitive function and mood enhancement.
F
ortunately for Cantabrians, nearly 25 years ago Henry Studholme, director of Sovereign Salmon, purchased
land in Hororata and finding it came with a state-of-the-art abandoned honey processing plant, took advice from a
salmon farmer friend and turned it into a fully-functional salmon smoking factory. Today that factory employs around 25 people, and any passing public are welcome to browse the factory shop, at 165 Hororata Road, for tempting smoked salmon goodies. Henry estimates its products have been available in 300 supermarkets, both nationally and internationally. Encouraged by glowing feedback from factory outlet customers, Henry decided it was time to be a visible presence in the city and showcase its extensive range of salmon products. In April 2018, Sovereign opened their Salmon Heaven shops in the Merivale Mall and The Colombo. “We sell cold and hot smoked salmon; salmon slices, smoked mussels and whitebait; and also available are lamb shanks in a retort pouch; cheeses, pickles, fruit pastes, and other family produced products,” Henry says. Customers can view their full range online, and purchase online, check out monthly promotions, or be inspired by their scrumptious recipes at: www. sovereignsalmon.co.nz So, while savouring that mouthmelting Omega-3 packed salmon, ponder this: what if Henry Studholme hadn’t purchased that Hororata property almost quarter of a century ago?

Ali says, “My products are truly artisanal; I’m the creator, cook and bottle washer. My main ingredients are organic: Christchurch farm-fresh, free-range eggs; insecticide and pesticide-free lemons from Ormond Orchard, Hawkes Bay; and saffron from Wynyard Estate Saffron in Central Otago.” Ali says the colour of all her products is natural. “It comes only from the lemon and eggs. There are no artificial colours or preservatives.” Ali’s 27 percent alcohol Limoncello was inspired by an Amalfi Coast recipe, and she is justifiably proud that her Limoncello Riserva has received a thumbs up from Italy. home Here are some current ideas for these hard-working rooms: • Give kitchens and bathrooms optimal space. Consider their natural connection to greenery and the outdoors. If there’s a fence outlook, could sweet peas or similar be trained up and along? Be cunning with large mirrors, or clever windows. • Butler’s pantries are desirable, because they often serve most purposes…food and appliance storage; sinks. Regular pantries or bench-top appliance cupboards should contain ample power points to hide away technology, plus the toaster, jug, sandwich press or smoothie-maker.

• Large central islands that double as breakfast bars with lots of recessed bar-stools are The. Best. Thing. Preferably with rubbish bins for separating waste not directly under a sink. People need to access bins without getting in the cook’s way. • The best modern kitchens and bathrooms are well planned for light, sound, ventilation, drainage and heat. Incorporate concealed speakers, i-pod stations, and automated, knee-high lighting. In the bathroom, can medicine and cosmetic cabinets be recessed/ concealed? • Many kitchens and bathrooms are monochromatic, yet dramatic and somehow memorable. Pendant lightfittings might be stand-out-gorgeous. Mirrors might emit light from behind. • Bathrooms and kitchens with fabulous storage are completely hip. Concealed, in-wall drawers and cupboards from floor to ceiling optimise space while keeping aesthetics peaceful.

building company has recently commenced a prestigious building project in Wanaka for architect David Sheppard, of Sheppard & Rout. Closer to home, the company has built a fabulous new home in Rolleston that ticks all the boxes and is priced to sell. Angus Chisholm says the home is an “entertainer’s delight with a high end finish”. The 339sqm property is situated at 48 Riverstone Drive and has plenty of room for the whole family. On a 1076sqm section, it’s located in a new subdivision, off East Maddison Road, zoned for West Rolleston Primary School, Rolleston College and Lincoln High and conveniently located just five minutes from supermarkets, shops and cafés. It consists of four bedrooms (plus office) with built in wardrobes. Central to this home is the spacious and sun drenched open plan kitchen/family zone that connects the dining and the two living spaces to both north-facing outdoor entertaining areas and large lawn. It also has a quadruple garage and workshop. Angus says the home is a “perfect example” of its building style and gives clients a visual appreciation of the techniques engaged. home Why do you think you pursued the field of interior and furniture design? My grandfather’s furniture business inspired me; he had real drive and a passion for it. I designed my first sofa aged 14, the first of many. I now design all of our Trenzseater furniture.
Ben Lewis inherits a passion
One of New Zealand’s leading interior design names, Ben Lewis plies his furniture and design trade here and around the globe. He and brother Hamish have stores in Christchurch, Queenstown and Auckland. We caught up with Ben to chat about design and inspiration.
Back then, how did you envisage your own career? I definitely had a vision to start a high-end furniture and interior design business in NZ, which I did at age 20. Who are your clients? Our clients often want the interiors of their home to be personalised, different to anyone else’s and have a sense of character which they can enjoy. They all enjoy the extra attention to detail we place within our designs that make each space and product unique. I notice you offer European brands alongside your own designs. How would you describe your style? Sophisticated elegance. I like intriguing layers of classic textures and quality materials. We achieve grand-scale, refined opulence; a timeless layered look. What inspires your design process? Anything from architecture to the signature detailing of classic furniture, to fashion, art and antiques. The characteristics of natural materials provoke thought and creativity too.
How important is the detail of a design? Very. It’s the detail which is the unique aspect, making a scheme transcend ‘ordinary.’ There’s a reported Northern Hemisphere resurgence in the popularity of brown furniture in raw finishes, mixed with pieces from differing historic eras. Your take? There’s a time and place for everything, so if the time and place selected is right for it…..that’s good. Should interiors appear effortless? It all depends on the client. Spaces should provoke visual satisfaction and enjoyment. Plus, they should exude the owner’s personality. What is the easiest thing to get wrong when non-designers style their own rooms? Proportion and scale can be tricky when you’re not used to dealing with these. Also, people often try too hard to be on-trend, when trends are transitory. Putting items together with all the layers needed is also difficult for some. What are your favourite travel destinations? Aitutaki Rarotonga, and in NZ, Queenstown. What are your favourite restaurants, anywhere? Bluebird, in Chelsea, London, and Woodpecker Hill in Auckland. Metropol October 25, 2018 71

M
any people can become quite uncomfortable in summer at night as they are too hot in their beds, so they just can’t get to sleep,” says Dreamwool Director David Henderson, who can provide the best solution to ensure a consistent, comfortable slumber. Specialising in natural, breathable mattresses and bedding – no glues, foams or polyester fillings are used – only New Zealand wool, spring systems from Denmark and quality Vietnamese latex. “We also provide cotton and Tencel based fabrics, which are known for their breathability.” He says the reason mass-produced factory beds generate so much heat is because they are full of synthetic, manmade products, such as polyester, foam and gel. “Dreamwool is all natural and breathable. We use 2.5kg of Merino wool per square metre, which provides a buffer underneath the body to allow the air to circulate, keeping you at a constant and more even temperature throughout the night.” Wool also makes a drier bed, is anti-dust mite and anti-microbial – and of course, the flipside to keeping you naturally cool in the summer, is keeping you naturally warm in the winter. “You can’t sleep if you’re too hot or cold.” Manufactured on site and made to order, the mattresses
provide for firm, medium, or soft support, customised to body weight and contouring to each partner. The range of Dreamwool Underquilts enhances the cooling effect, with one option featuring tiny micro-coils, within temperate-controlling wool layers. The springs act like tiny balloons lifting the body, allowing air to circulate, keeping the bed cool and dry. The company’s European flexible slat bed systems also provide more comfort, by allowing air to pass under the bed. An important point to consider when purchasing a beautiful, handmade Dreamwool mattress, David says, is the right mattress protector. “An organic mattress protector allows the bed to breathe, rather than wrapping it up with a plastic mattress protector, which makes everything hot.” A true family business, David’s father bought it in 1974, renaming it around the millennium to reflect the transition from entry level to a top end wool-based product. David is hands-on in the Sydenham showroom, where customers are also welcomed by Nicky. Visit Dreamwool Beds Ltd, 96 Disraeli Street, Sydenham, phone 03 343 5105 or visit www.dreamwool.co.nz. espite its obvious association with the tropics, it is equally capable of creating an elegant, mid-century aesthetic. So how can we use teal to create the perfect palette? Teal pops with bright white and its colour wheel match is coral. Equally it works with cream, navy, pinks and especially gold
and brown tones. It makes for a calming pairing with greys, a deep and edgy match with black and makes for a regal partnership with gold. Both warm and yet refreshing, teal is making a splash in homewares, so why not try this one on for size? After all, it’s got our teal of approval.

Advice. What’s Good, What’s Not?
than just a baseline hunch! No matter what it is you are considering, talk with an expert, not an amateur – or worse, someone who masquerades as an expert. A live example for me was an individual offering to sell an investment opportunity. When I enquired how much he had invested in it, I got a red-faced ‘nothing’! That simple response allowed me to reconsider his advice. Always ask questions.
Recently I’ve been thinking about wisdom. What constitutes being wise and what part advice plays in this. I believe wisdom is absolutely critical, especially as we tackle the minefields in life, but finding it is not easy. You don’t have to be Yoda, the tiny Jedi Master who was over 800 years old, or Professor Dumbledore, the Headmaster of Hogwarts, to be wise – you could be anyone – but you do have to possess certain qualities. So, what are they?
2. Experience. This sits perfectly alongside expertise. My husband, John, refers to it as ‘runs on the board’. Both of us, when seeking advice, look for people with experience in a field, and meaningful testimonials, reviews or recommendations assist this process. Note to self: do your research and hunt out experienced people, companies or individuals if you want to benefit from wise counsel. I’ve also found a real willingness to help when you find the right person. The funny thing about experience is that several of the people I spoke with trust neither C.V.s nor photos, saying both can be made to look far ‘rosier’ than the reality. So, watch overzealous self-descriptions and over-filtered photos.
Let’s start with advice. I asked colleagues and friends what they felt qualified someone to give advice and they provided me with these answers: 1. Expertise. There’s absolutely no point taking advice from someone who doesn’t actually have expertise in the area you’re concerned with. The ‘advice’ of well-meaning friends professing to know what the absolute value of a property is when I’m dealing with potential sellers and purchasers springs to mind. Expertise is more
3.Trust. Everyone wants to trust the advice they are given. Trust is built up drop by drop. It’s destroyed in a fraction of the time it took to
develop, so it needs to be protected. The person trusted as a source of advice needs to safeguard the sanctity and confidentiality (if required) of their advice and the recipient needs to know it was delivered in their best interests and without agenda. It’s actually a really big thing, so when you are trusted for being wise, treasure that. Finally, be current. Some advice needs to be current and up to the minute. Small fortunes can be won or lost, especially in property, so take care that your advice reflects that. As much as I respect wise counsel based on years of experience if times have changed and new methodologies have evolved that needs to be considered too. Measure and weigh, think and consider. If you’re a wise person you are probably in the minority – do something with that wisdom – and if it’s good advice you seek, then I hope I’ve helped.

Ground-breaking gas LPG gas is a wondrous thing – for heating, hot water and cooking. However, a ground-breaking patented Elgas invention creates a lucrative advantage. The gas cylinder is contained under the ground – completely out of sight.
78 October 25, 2018 Metropol
he aptly named EasyGas DownUnder was developed by a Sydney engineer. First launched and patented in Australia, by Elgas, it won the Australian International Design Award in 2010. Now commonplace in households there, it was recently introduced to New Zealand. Architects, engineers, builders and homeowners are now seriously considering the advantages. “You won’t need to order gas anymore. Via an automated system, we schedule deliveries,” says Roger Smith, South Region Manager for Elgas. “EasyGas is delivered by tanker and filled directly from the hose, which only takes a few minutes. There is no swapping of cylinders. “Most are positioned beside a driveway, garage, mailbox, in the garden, and accessed via a secured lid, flush with the ground - in line of sight to the tanker.” “The 90kg heavy-duty steel cylinders are thicker and stronger than the regular, and extremely safe underground.” He says a highly secure canister is built into the ground. Then the cylinder is packed in tightly to withstand any high water table pressure, or lateral movements like earthquakes. And the lids are fire resistant. “The cost of the kit varies with each installation. An Elgas approved gas-fitter will provide the precise cost.” EasyGas DownUnder cylinders and outer canister can viewed at the Home Ideas Centre Mandeville Street, Christchurch. t’s not just the city’s arts and culture which is experiencing somewhat of a post-quake renaissance, with new building facades too creating a welcome digression from the archetypal concrete and stone buildings previously adopted in the city. It is a sentiment perhaps best captured by Christchurch architect Melanda Slemint when she convened at the 2018 Canterbury Architecture Awards earlier this year. “The world’s best cities have a fine-grained rhythm that creates interest and variation and prevents streets and public spaces from being overwhelming,” she says. “As post-quake Christchurch continues to develop, it is heartening to see that the city’s architects are attuned to the needs of people.” The Christchurch Justice and Emergency Services Precinct by Warren and Mahoney Architects, Opus Architecture and Cox Architecture, stands as a fine example of the merger between form and function that we are seeing in modern architecture. Meanwhile, the Arts Centre of Christchurch, EA Chemistry Building by Warren and Mahoney Architects represents the marriage between the heritage and contemporary that has come to characterise the emerging city. One of several Gothic Revival Buildings that combine to form the Arts Centre, the EA Chemistry Building is a unique and important part of the cultural and historical heritage of Christchurch, even more so in the post-earthquake city. New building facades – such as Kahukura at Ara Institute of Canterbury on our beautiful cover – are playing with eye catching angles, colours and materials creating a welcome digression from the archetypal concrete and stone buildings previously adopted in the city. They are the true example of what is possible when ingenuity and innovation are the motivating drivers, and Christchurch is the benefactor of both.

T
he council’s decision to recommend to Government that the Multi-Use Arena be funded as the lion-share of the Capital Acceleration Fund allocation caused comment around priorities for Christchurch in the regeneration of the city. However, this is not an example of sacrificing one priority in favour of another. The new arena is a vital piece of public infrastructure. It is not just a rugby stadium. While it will host matches, it is so much more – it’s a venue capable of hosting massive events that will draw people from afar to the city. Over the last year we have seen numerous international artists play all over New Zealand and the cities that host them reap massive economic benefits. Right now, Christchurch is missing out. The restaurants and bars that will be packed to the brim hosting concerts and international sporting events will be supplied by our local food and beverage producers and the staff working in those venues and the hotels will be locals. When we’re debating whether Christchurch should have a Multi-Use Arena, we need to think beyond it being just a rugby stadium and understand the economic and social benefits it will bring everybody in our city. I congratulate the council for the decision to both fund the stadium from the Government’s Capital Acceleration Fund, and to bring forward their own contribution in the Long-Term Plan. Now we have to get on with it and build this great community facility.
I
t was a pleasure to announce the establishment of the Greater Christchurch Claims Resolution Service (GCCRS). After the release of the report of my Independent Ministerial Advisor into EQC earlier in the year, it was clear that more needed to be done to help people who have been waiting for their claims to be resolved. We’ve set this up in order to give homeowners a free to access, impartial pathway to settle their claims. It will provide independent case management to bring together fast tracked claims handling, specialist engineering support, psychosocial support and legal expertise to help resolve claims. GCCRS will operate on a ‘no wrong door’ basis. Anyone with an unresolved claim can call or come to the new office on Cashel Street and settlement support brokers will tailor the approach to suit each individual situation. Claimants will have one person in charge of their claim who will drive it along for them – they won’t need to call up and speak to a different person all the time. They will know who is responsible for settling their claim. I’ve also asked EQC and Southern Response to develop new processes to ensure a streamlined, cross-agency resolution process and I’m inviting private insurers to join this scheme too. In the first two days, 50 people had already got in touch with the service. We know there are so many people out there who want to have their houses fixed and get on with their lives and GCCRS will allow them to do just that.
O
ne of the biggest on-going problems facing engineering consultancy firms is the lack of engineering professionals available. This creates problems with resourcing projects and growing businesses. I heard recently that the average age of engineers is 45 and that a lot of the more senior engineers are fast approaching retirement. The reasons are multi-faceted and relate to issues such as the rise of the IT industry, which has attracted students who would traditionally take up engineering studies, and the pull of higher overseas salaries, particularly in the mining sector. We also do not produce enough engineering graduates, which is exacerbated by the fact that some of the engineering students are overseas students, who usually return to their country of origin for work. Perhaps one of the biggest factors is that engineers traditionally are not good at promoting themselves and, as such, potential engineers of the future are not always aware of the amazing opportunities that an engineering career can offer. If young people had a better understanding of what engineers do, then perhaps more of our students would aspire to be the designer of the next major large dam, motorway or Sky Tower, and not the creator of the next popular PS4 game. I would encourage the parents of any children with inquisitive minds to consider a career in engineering. The course can be quite challenging, but your children will be guaranteed employment in a well-paying industry, which will offer challenges and progression throughout their career.

n a wet Friday in mid-October, a significant milestone in the regeneration of Cathedral Square was reached. The doors to Tūranga – the new central library – were opened to the public. At nearly 10,000 square metres, it is the largest public library in the South Island. But its significance for the local community amounts to more than just floorspace. The city has not had a central library since 2011. In that time, technologies have continued to advance and the modern library environment is very different from what it was in the past, where people of all ages were required to be seen and not heard. One thing that has not changed, however, is the role of libraries – particularly central libraries – in a community. At a library, we all have the same level of access to information. At a library, everyone is equal. The value of that equity cannot be underestimated. Nor can the impact Tūranga will have on the vibrancy of Christchurch’s central city, particularly Cathedral Square. This milestone in the city’s regeneration includes the significant philanthropic support for Tūranga. Through the recentlyestablished Christchurch Foundation, $2.5 million has been gifted by TSB, Spark and Southbase to support the library’s operational overheads. The momentum being created by the combination of philanthropic support, private sector investment and public sector commitment will ensure the Square becomes an example-of-progress as much as a work-in-progress. It also demonstrates how all sectors working together on a best-for-city approach could work outside Cathedral Square.

n 25 November Ōtākaro will be holding the City Promenade Scavenger Hunt to mark our completion of this key feature of the wider Te Papa Ōtākaro/Avon River Precinct; $10,000 worth of prizes will be on offer from businesses along the promenade. By answering 10 simple questions about some of the features along the new waterfront, you could walk away with a voucher from Discover Travel, something dapper from Crane Brothers or an invitation to The Pegasus Arms or Miro for your next meal. Identified in the Blue Print as an Anchor Project, the Avon River Precinct and City Promenade have transformed the 2km stretch of Oxford Terrace between the Margaret Mahy Family Playground and the hospital. It has been designed to turn the city around to face and embrace the river like never before. The paved promenade incorporates art and literary works, rain gardens and other greenery, terraced seating and steps along the river. It’s a route for slow-speed vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, prams, scooters; anyone looking to take a moment and ease their way through the central city. So, the City Promenade Scavenger Hunt can be tackled at a leisurely pace. Pick up an entry form from either the Antigua Street footbridge or Margaret Mahy Family Playground from 10am on 25 November and it doesn’t have to be in the entry box at the other end until 4pm. There will be food and entertainment available throughout the day so bring the family and find something very special in the heart of our city.
I
was amazed to learn that there are just over 2100 registered charities in Christchurch. On top of that, there will be many, many other causes that most of us don’t even know about unless they have touched us in our private lives. The problem is, if you are wanting to gift some money to a cause, how do you know which ones are legit and which ones might not be quite as robust in their operations and governance? It’s an often voiced concern from individuals and organisations looking to donate often significant amounts of money. This is where I want to put in an unashamed plug for The Christchurch Foundation. We’ve been going a year now and have raised just short of $4 million – the first $2.5 million was recently gifted to Tūranga, the new central library, by TSB, Spark and Southbase. Our job is to help individuals and businesses to identify causes to which they want to gift money and to help with due diligence. We broker win-win relationships between those who give and those who receive. The foundation isn’t cause led; we support donors and their aspirations for the city – be it a community facility such as Tūranga or an organisation supporting women’s health. People don’t give directly to the foundation, they give through it.

arren and Mahoney architects Richard McGowan and Fiona Short delighted in the task of conceiving a home that both responded to its place and provided the required advancement of concept for the clients, while Hoogervorst Architectural Builders rose above the challenge of bringing the spectacular design to reality. Hoogervorst was approached by Warren and Mahoney as one of three contractors invited to tender. “I had experienced their spectacular work at Annandale, on a complex site with unusual elements,” Richard says. Site manager Nick Hoogervorst says building this home has been really special. “The working relationship with the clients and with Richard and Fiona was excellent, which made for a really enjoyable build.” The challenges tended to be just bits and 86 October 25, 2018 Metropol
pieces which they managed by working them through with the team. “We tried to keep ahead of the game to minimise the chance of any larger issues.” The team of five worked on the house for around 18 months plus a further nine for landscaping, and Nick says on this project they “were learning every day, which is what keeps you interested”. A memorable day was getting the staircase, made of two tonnes of steel and a first for Hoogervorst, inside a fully painted room. Nick doesn’t have a favourite style or material to work with; it is the variety that appeals. Another Desmond Street home is polar opposite in design and that is so enjoyable for the team. “We have exceptional staff on board and the variety keeps them absorbed.” The Desmond Street house is the first
project they have done with Warren and Mahoney in some years and they found Richard and Fiona enjoyable to work with. “We had regular site meetings which were exceptionally productive.” Richard says this home and its riverside site, post-earthquake, was a demanding project to undertake. Fascinating even from below ground level, the foundations consist of a series of stone columns beneath the main raft. The columns are constructed using a system of hollow tubes packed with stone. The house itself is an abstract response to its site, and to the owners’ requirements. On the bank of the Avon River, the house wraps the protected Copper Beach tree. The root system had to be protected, and required an extensive collaboration with an arborist. Richard’s design acknowledges earlier
adventure raised-floor precedents - Craig Ellwood’s Rosen house in California, and Mies’s Farnsworth house on the Fox River, Illinois. The story begins with a north-facing raised courtyard under a canopy, which leads to the main entry of the house. Floodplain regulations mean the floor-level
had to be one metre clear of the ground level and, happily, raising the platform suited the clients’ vision. A shared interest was in abstract forms with shapes and corners expressed, which in turn created unexpected spaces within. At 400 square metres, the house is not

huge, but is elongated following the river frontage. The north side is C-shaped, European in style with the central courtyard enclosed on three sides by the building. The steel frame is clad with Hebel Aerated Concrete Panels, which Richard describes as “today’s equivalent of Warren and Mahoney’s original relationship with concrete block” but is lightweight and suitable for our seismic zone, as well as cost effective. Cedar cladding, an aluminium Eurotray roof, and APL joinery complete the exterior. From east to west the four-bedroom home ramps up in height. The linking gallery connecting living and sleeping wings contains the black metal staircase ascending in a straight run through the tall and airy space. The wedge of space hosting the living areas makes for a dramatic backdrop for everyday living for the family of four, as well as for entertaining. The kitchen is generous and formed as long gallery including a wall of dark oak timber cabinetry. Richard says the space is intended to read as an extension of the outdoor courtyard. The bathrooms are tall and interestingly shaped, slotted as they are into the spaces created by the angles of the house, while the guest toilet features an obscured glass wall. Flooring throughout is light coloured Tundra limestone, with walls a combination of light painted and dark stained oak. A Polished Venetian Plaster wall surrounds the fireplace, created through trowelling on plaster which is highly polished and waxed to a marble-grey colour. Richard says it’s a sculptural study rather than a complex or fussy house. An intended white exterior flowing into the light interior, was changed to black part-way through the build to create contrast with neighbouring homes. For Richard the house is a standout. “An example of our interest in the future and the past, contemporary forms informed by precedents that we like, translating and expressing the desires of our clients who were interested in an adventure and willing to be brave with the site. Hoogervorst has executed the work superbly, and they have a great group of subcontractors.”

Stadium brings hope to city By Harcourts Gold Consultant Mark O’Loughlin
The new covered stadium for Christchurch has the green light. Last month the Christchurch City Council voted in favour of using $220 million of funding promised to the city by the Labour-led Government to ensure the multiuse half-billion dollar stadium will go ahead. It will be only the second of its kind in the country.
88 October 25, 2018 Metropol
s a business man in this city I applaud the decision. A new covered multi-use arena will take the city to a new level, not only by hosting events that will provide access to top notch sporting and cultural entertainment, but also by bringing people and economic activity from wider Canterbury and the greater South Island. We won’t be missing out on Ed Sheerantype concerts in the future with their huge financial injections into the economy – and our champion Crusaders rugby team will have a home ground worthy of them. Short and longer-term accommodation for participants and spectators at events at the stadium is going to be highly sought after. That’s why we are seeing inner city apartments being snapped up right now. Scheduled for completion in late 2019 is a new apartment development adjacent to Cranmer Square called The West Kilmore Apartments. The nine-level building comprises 17 luxury apartments with one, two and three bedroom options, designed by architects Wilson & Hill. The stunning views and high specification certainly make the West Kilmore Apartments a superior choice in inner city living. We are currently selling them off the plans with prices from $475,000. ite Safe NZ, in partnership with the Building Research Association of New Zealand (BRANZ) is urgently undertaking further research to uncover what is fuelling this alarmingly high rate of suicides in construction. Site Safe Chief Executive Brett Murray says understanding the problem is the first step to prevention. “Site Safe hopes to shed some light on what is driving poor mental health in construction, so we can then work alongside industry and government to put in place effective prevention programmes.” The study aims to analyse the coroner’s findings of all suicides of construction workers from 2007 until 2017, some 339 cases, to better understand any common factors. An initial BRANZ scoping study suggested that a ‘macho’ or ‘harden-up’ culture was one of the key factors behind high rates of suicide in construction and that further research is urgently required. According to the Suicide Mortality Review Committee (2016), construction has the highest suicide rate of all industries in New Zealand. At 6.9 percent, it is marginally higher than farming and forestry, which sits at 6.8 percent. “For many years we’ve put the focus on safety, rather than looking at people’s health more broadly. It’s time we recognised that we must do more and prevent suicide from having a tragic effect on the lives of so many Kiwi families.” The study’s initial results are expected to be available early next year.

It’s how we lighten the burden for customers who may be daunted or confused by their environmental management compliance responsibilities,” Mark says. “Setting up and managing sites and spaces for ongoing safety is also incredibly important for everyone,” he adds. MBC’s health and safety system

With the bulk of earthquake-related clean-up now easing, MBC is witnessing a renewed awareness of the risks and responsibilities surrounding asbestos. A two-year-old system of asbestos-work-licensing has raised the bar, Mark says, “with many cowboys having now fallen away from the asbestos industry”. MBC believes Canterbury leads the charge in environmental management, as post-seismic experience has fortified local expertise.

mma’s Hackthorne Road kitchen design, precisely executed by Joinery Concepts, won her the Kitchen Distinction Runner-Up title (in the $40K-$60k kitchen category). Among other things, the judges praised her entry for its refined industrial aesthetic. Emma ensured that a balanced approach was applied to the parallel use of timber veneer, paint lacquer, matt black steel, stone, and brushed stainless steel. In addition, there’s an inventive interplay between light and dark areas, including the interiors of drawers and cupboards, in matt black.
All details are fitting for a kitchen designed for foodies and avid cooks. “The design brief included mention of the owners’ favourite Auckland restaurant, Al Brown’s Depot, with its cool industrial vibe,” Lume Design’s Jeff Merrin says. Emma aimed to maximise storage while allowing for plenty of sociable bar seating. She incorporated a full, concealed working pantry behind large pocket doors. Beautifully executed cabinetry and feature shelving in powder-coated steel and American white oak extends to the ceiling. This endows a feeling of height while providing display space.
“Fabulous partners in the whole process were Peter Robertson and the staff at Joinery Concepts,” Jeff says. “Peter crafted the kitchen with his typical perfectionism and we always enjoy working collaboratively with him.” Contact Lume Design on 03 377 7541 or see them at 192 St Asaph Street, Christchurch (from 12 November 2018) or visit www.lumedesign.co.nz. The discourse of psychologists and experts in disaster recovery from all around the world gives rise to one very sobering reality; attempting to quantify or qualify the ‘long tail’ of the recovery period following the immediate ‘life and limb response’ is tantamount to asking, ‘how long is a piece of string?’
The Justice and Emergency Services Precinct received an Interior Architecture Award in the NZIA Architecture Awards 2018.
Y
es, it’s true; Christchurch has a long way to go, but the metamorphosis of Christchurch’s architecture is palpable. In a state of evolution, the Garden City’s architectural typology is nothing short of distinct. Marrying heritage and contemporary is no mean feat, but we are witnessing the rebirth of a cosmopolitan city that will be characterised by low rise buildings with personality. New building facades are playing with eye catching angles, colours and materials – a welcome digression from the archetypal concrete and stone buildings previously adopted in the city. The Christchurch Justice and Emergency Services Precinct, a rebuild ‘anchor project’ designed by a consortium of Warren and Mahoney Architects, Opus Architecture and Cox Architecture, offers an exceptional glimpse of what is possible when innovation and ingenuity combine. Rubbing shoulders with some equally grandiose identities including the Isaac
Theatre Royal and the Piano Centre for Music and the Arts. ‘The Piano’ stands in all its elegant and philanthropic glory in the new performing arts precinct and is ushering in a new era of architecture in the city. The Deloittes Building on Cambridge Terrace continues to make waves. Greatly influenced by the Ōtākaro/Avon River, its rippling and very distinctive façade has set a welcome precedent for new generation builds. Architectural photographer Dennis Radermacher has a first-hand experience of the emerging city and has come to enjoy the constant trickle of new buildings that add pieces of the puzzle to a somewhat dishevelled CBD. “The last year has seen some cornerstone projects finish and the result is an urban space that starts feeling like a functioning city rather than a disjointed patchwork,” he says. “Recently finished projects, like our new central city library or the EntX complex,
show that modern architecture of glass and steel can have a playful side.” While he recognises the voices that mourn the loss of our Victorian heritage buildings, he’s impressed with what is being produced on the local stage. “Take the beauty of the golden cantilevered façade of our library at sunset, the adventures kids can have on Margaret Mahy Playground, or the new Terraces along the Avon,” Dennis says. Some of our architectural heritage was taken from us in 2011, but the emerging Christchurch already has plenty to offer for most of us, he adds. “Of course we want it all – and right now at that – but I think we have done an amazing job for a tiny place in the middle of the ocean. It might take a few more years to break in our brand-new city, but I think I can already feel the buzz. “Going forward, I hope we will be bold enough to build the first city of the 21st century, not the last of the 20th. Kia kaha Christchurch!” Metropol October 25, 2018 95

Beautiful bathrooms We love spending time at home – and that includes the bathroom too.
Its overall design is becoming increasingly cosy and welcoming – and revealing the growing influence of general interior design trends in the process. At the same time, new technical developments are a must-have in the bathroom too.
I
t all stems from users’ desire for a modern, lifestyle-friendly bathroom and there’s definitely no shortage of options for turning those plans into reality.
Whether the goal is a family bathroom or a private spa, the level of equipment should be tailored to the users’ personal needs. There’s plenty of scope for the interior
design too – the spectrum ranges from stylish minimalism all the way to snug and cosy furnishings with plenty of storage space and lots of surfaces for decorative items.

The Comfort Bathroom The furnishings in a modern bathroom don’t need a lot of fancy gimmicks to convey a sense of luxury and ease. A level access shower, a shower toilet, a bathtub with an ergonomically sloped back or fittings that work at the push of a button, LED-illuminated mirror cabinets with storage space and optimal lighting, bathroom products have never been as convenient as they are today. Finding a separate place for the toilet or adding a guest toilet also helps the bathroom be perceived as a room in its own right.
2.
The Small Bathroom In some urban areas, smaller bathrooms are the norm. As a proportion, their number even looks set to grow because the density and price of sought-after inner-city living space will continue to increase. An optimised layout designed by a professional bathroom planner also helps make full use of every square centimetre when space is in short supply. There’s nothing outdated about the small on-trend bathroom. On the contrary: it might be small, but it’s stunning too – thanks to an abundance of hi-tech and convenient solutions.
The Ecological Bathroom When it comes to ecology, the bathroom has had an excellent track record for quite some time. Thanks to the optimisation of tap spouts and the jets on hand and overhead showers, the amount of water consumed by fittings has been reduced to a minimum. The growing trend towards natural materials for the bathroom walls and ceiling confirms the ecological bathroom’s credentials once and for all.
4.
The Hygienic Bathroom In Asia, shower toilets are more or less par for the course in any modern bathroom and are becoming increasingly widespread in Europe too. Hotels first acquainted us with the shower toilet, and word of the good feeling and convenient hygiene it provides is spreading rapidly.
5.
The Snug Bathroom As bathroom architecture opens up to lifestyle spaces and enhanced functions turn it into a private spa, the bathroom is experiencing a very special kind of update. Its snug features, innovative products and larger size are increasing both the amount and the quality of the time we spend in the bathroom: a megatrend.

floor level reflecting history. The Main Building will be four stories high and feature 30 apartments. The new inner-city landmark’s black and white contemporary forms were designed by Context Architects and built with the
seismic strength structural steel. Lucratively positioned, parallel to Latimer Square at 272 Barbadoes Street, the apartments will be akin to Worcester Street sister property, Prestons Residence. Ranging from one-and two-bedroom abodes, selling from $439,000 they’ll accommodate high-end appliances, spacious open-style living, generous-sized balconies and courtyards, strict acoustic tolerances and secure entry access. “The challenge was the tight site, but the apartments are cleverly designed to fit the space, including 18 resident’s car parks,” site foreman Brad Shotter says. After moving down from the company’s Taranaki headquarters, Brad built his family home in Kaiapoi. “The appeal of working here is our subcontractors. They’re absolutely brilliant. And Christchurch has a good vibe and can-do attitude.” Director John Street has fronted the company for over 35 years. High standards are the foundations of his business, achievable by retaining a small operation. Street and Cook already shines on the construction radar after building the Garden City Helicopters Aviation Centre, which was awarded Gold at this year’s New Zealand Commercial Project Awards, in recognition of excellence in workmanship, construction practises and innovation. www.streetandcook.co.nz www.latimercentral.co.nz

Old School Values Angela Waller
Bodycore Gym is so much more than a fitness centre – it’s a community hub, where kindness and compassion are valued, and ordinary people aspire to reach their potential.
C
ombining a café and a supplement shop, the newly opened 24/7 gym on Battersea St in Sydenham provides an inspirational and uplifting setting to put the fun back into getting fit and achieving your goals. “We’re bringing ‘old school’ back, by creating an environment completely different to the common chain gyms, which are quite intimidating for some people. You don’t just do a class then leave without talking to anyone,” founder Muzz Coates says.
“My personal trainers are handpicked for their personality and knowledge, and the atmosphere here is fun, friendly and vibrant. We focus on making all our members feel like part of the team and not just a number.” The café is a peri-nutrition bar, offering a delicious sugar-free selection of proteinrich options. “The carrot cake is to die for,” Muzz says, who originally created Bodycore eight years ago as a supplement store on Carlyle Street, with his own range of natural, locally manufactured products
and a small fitness studio upstairs. Due to his ever-growing clientele, he joined forces with co-owner Craig McGuigan to open the new facility. Craig says the focus was on creating a unique, family-friendly centre. “It’s a space where anyone, from elite athletes or bodybuilders to beginners, coexist in a supportive environment, mingle and learn from each other.” Follow Bodycore on Facebook, order supplements online www.bodycore.co.nz or phone 374 6947 for more info.
