Here’s to health Kia ora Metropol readers. We can finally put a face to the name, as I share my two cents (for what it’s worth) in this special issue. NATIONAL MULTI-AWARD WINNERS 2013 - 2019
All of our worlds have been shaken up during the last few years, and there has never been a stronger interest in health and wellness than right now. GOLD WATER ON THE
WORDS BY GEORGIA SUMMERTON
She made worldwide headlines last year following her historic performance at the Tokyo Olympic Games. Newlywed Dame Lisa Carrington is one of New Zealand’s greatest athletes, and her accomplishments and incredible success in competitive kayaking have inspired generations of proud Kiwis.
T
he first New Zealand woman to become a triple gold medalist, there is no doubt Lisa is in a league of her own. As the country, and world, watched from afar, the 2021 Olympic Games would become a moment in history for her and her proud home country. She says, “Lots of moments have shaped my career so far, but what happened in Tokyo was something else. It’s amazing to look back and reflect on what was achieved.” And what was achieved was nothing short of world-class. Winning gold in three kayak sprint races, K-1 500m, K-2 500m and K-1 200m, brought her total Olympic medals to a staggering six, five of these being gold. This makes Lisa New Zealand’s most successful Olympian. Returning home from Tokyo was

unfortunately right into the midst of lockdowns and Covid-19 chaos, so Lisa’s homecoming was quieter than what would otherwise have been big celebrations. “I stepped out of MIQ straight into Auckland’s lockdown, so it was a quiet few months. Following Tokyo, I would have loved to have spent time travelling to parts of New Zealand, but instead, we got a lot of work done around the house which was satisfying.” Currently, home for Lisa is Auckland, although she was able to enjoy some downtime with her nearest and dearest this summer in the special place where she grew up. “We had an awesome summer break in Ohope, it was so nice to finally get back there after Auckland’s long lockdown. I loved catching up with whānau and friends.” What does downtime look like for her? Often its time in nature, and spent with her favourite furry friend. “I love spending
time with my dog, Colin. We live near some incredible beaches and parks which is lucky.” Lisa first got into competitive kayaking back in 2007, after hoping it would help with her surf ski paddling, in her surf lifesaving competitions. It didn’t take long for her to switch her focus fully to kayaking. Her career has been incredible as sports fans have witnessed, and a result of such success, especially in Tokyo last year saw her reach a different kind of milestone. Something not many athletes achieve at such a young age, Lisa rounded out 2021 by accepting the honour of being made a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to canoe racing. This came in the same year she was named most influential Maori Sports Personality of the past 30 years, as well as the Halberg Sportswoman of the decade,
incredible determination and commitment, as well as a fair share of challenges and hard days. She has her own set of practices to support her mindset amidst the madness of tiresome training. “I surround myself with great people. I have a brilliant team that supports me in all sorts of ways – both on and off the water. I’m also a fan of journalling, it’s something I do daily.” Aside from her sporting career, Lisa has other things on the go, including currently studying for a Masters in Psychology. Plans for the rest of the year ahead include working towards finishing that, as well as training, travelling and competitions of course. “I’m looking forward to getting back into racing. Our Nationals are in April and World Champs are in Canada this August.” I’m sure all of New Zealand will be looking forward to cheering on Lisa in her future endeavours, be it on or off the water.

so this great honour feels extremely fitting. Earlier this year, Lisa won the supreme award at the 59th Halberg Awards ceremony and was also named sportswoman of the year earlier in the night. It would deservedly be her second supreme award, as well as her fifth consecutive sportswoman of the year award. There is no doubt Lisa is an inspiring role model for all Kiwis, especially young athletes hoping to get to a professional level in their sport. Her advice to them is as wise as you’d expect and comes with the kind of knowledge that can only be gained from years worth of learning and hard work. “Always try to find the joy or fun in the training or the work, because to have success takes time. It helps to not rely on the result or outcome to define the journey.” Achieving what Lisa has would not be possible without

Sprinting to the top WORDS BY GEORGIA SUMMERTON
In recent years, New Zealand has seen a rise in the number of the fastest women ever to have run on home soil.
T
wo of these women, Rosie Elliott and Anna Percy, both 24 years old, are from Christchurch. Still early in their athletics careers, they show incredible talent and promise for continued success in women’s sprinting. Both are incredible sprinters in their own right, and members of the 2022 NZ Women’s 4 x 100m relay team. They hold a current New Zealand record, broken in 2020 after standing unchallenged for 20 years. As a relay team, they hope to qualify for the World Championships and World Relays in 2023.
Having been in the athletics world since she was young, Rosie went ‘all in’ to the sport at the age of 21, after feeling she had only scratched the surface of her potential as a teen. “I started athletics in the junior age groups when I was 12, and competed in all events. I continued athletics into the senior age groups, focusing on the sprints and jumps, and at 16 I represented New Zealand for the first time at the Oceania Games. While Oceania is a perfect opportunity for developing younger athletes, I very quickly felt that the next progression in international competition was unobtainable and left the sport. When I came back to athletics at 21, I trained intending to be a heptathlete before a breakthrough in the sprints caused me to consider them as a viable specialist event.” Now with a strong trail of success, including placing in all three sprints at the most recent national championships, Rosie looks ahead to what representing her country would mean. “There is the obvious pride of getting to compete internationally at a major event, knowing all your friends and family are supporting you. On top of that, it would prove to myself that I deserve to be prioritising running, rather than feeling I am delaying other important things for an unrealistic dream.” Rosie’s talent is clear to see, but it’s not without incredible determination and the right attitude that has got her this far. “It’s impossible to be motivated for every training session. I get through these days by knowing that the athletes who succeed are the ones who have the discipline to do the training in the absence of motivation.”

Anna Percy, Image credit: Mark Roberts
Both Rosie and Anna train with Christchurch-based, coach Andrew Maclennan. He sees a lot more in both athletes than their talent alone. “Talent only gets you in the door. Work ethic takes you from the door to the podium and I see a determination in these athletes to eke out every single drop that shows what they are truly worth.” He loves helping to bring out what’s hidden in them. “For some athletes, their talent is obvious, so you’re literally just keeping them on task to let that talent come out at some stage. However, some of them have no idea it’s in them, so to see them excel after years of committed work when they never thought they could achieve on the world stage is incredibly satisfying and rewarding.”
Sponsorship opportunity
Anna Percy, Image credit: Alisha Lovrich
With limited racing opportunities and international competitors, sponsorship for Rosie or Anna would give them the ability to continue their season internationally. Hopes of qualifying for the World Championships and beyond means competing in several races before then, all of which don’t come cheap. For any interest in supporting either of these incredible athletes, contact sponsorship manager Helena Dinnissen on 027 416 5474, or email helenadinnissen@gmail.com

Growing up in Christchurch, Anna has an incredible level of discipline and desire to pursue excellence in all areas of her life. Outside of athletics, she is involved with operations engineering, having graduated from the University of Canterbury with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. Anna wasn’t always competing in athletics, in fact when she was younger, she was a trampolinist, quite seriously until the age of 12. After taking up athletics purely for the fun of it, it became clear she had found her wheelhouse. Thoughts of taking the sport to a higher level were sparked in 2017, “when I first raced the European circuit and ran the NZ junior record in the 400m hurdles. I had some great results in Europe and being so young as well, I definitely thought that this was something I could do professionally in the future.” Since then, she has seen incredible success and holds the third-fastest 100m sprint time ever as a New Zealander. For Anna, the opportunity to represent New Zealand at an elite level would be a dream come true. “To achieve something that I’ve dreamed about since I was 10 would be absolutely incredible. Track and field is such a difficult sport to get to the top of and competing at the World Champs to me would be a reward for all the hard work that has been put into getting me to the elite level.” Anna is all about having the right mindset when motivation seems hard to find. “I don’t necessarily find motivation on tough days, but I have a commitment with myself that while I’m a fully committed athlete, I show up every day with the mindset to get better and grow as an athlete and person.”

The complexities of realty Experienced real estate salesperson Annette Pendergast understands the complexities of selling property, including preparation and presentation to market.
A
successful sale begins with reaching the right buyer with correct strategic campaign,” says Annette. “I start with the home looking gorgeous, but I add the correct online marketing, use a great database of buyers, have the support of all other Mike Pero agents, and have the incredible bonus of free advertising of the property on television.” Annette says successfully selling a property requires understanding the needs of the purchaser. “Aside from experience in negotiating a contract to suit conditions such as simultaneous settlements for those buying and selling at the same time, I work through the process of securing insurance and access to technical advice through building inspections and valuations.” Working closely with Mike Pero Mortgages colleagues makes all the difference in the challenging financial climate, especially for first home buyers, or where clients need bridging finance, or reverse mortgaging. The remarkable 2021 boom has peaked, with the impact of mortgage interest rate increases and a predicted influx of properties to market yet to come. Annette’s advice is, “Don’t hesitate to sell now as prices are likely to slip. Give me a call for a reliable experienced estimate on your home’s value, or to discuss the ever-changing current market.” www.annette-pendergast.mikepero.com

Get organised Happy end of the financial year 2022.
I
t’s certainly been a year full of contrast - boom for some, whilst others have had challenges to navigate: supply chain issues, employment shortages, and a lack of tourists. The end is nigh for tax year 2022, and what better way to finish than being super organised with your end-of-year tax checklist.
Nicole Hague of NH + Associates has put together these tips to consider:
1 2 3
Upload all invoices and documents relating to bank transactions in Xero - In transactions, there is a box where you can upload invoices and contracts to support payments. You can also add documents under FILES in Xero, so your accountant can view them, and save time asking more questions down the track. Bank and loan Statements – Uploading statements for each bank/loan account to support the balance as at 31 March 2022 is imperative. Upload these into Xero/Files and you will be one step ahead of everyone else. Stock-take as at 31 March 2022 – Ensure you have conducted a physical stocktake and compared it to your inventory system. If these don’t match, there could be inconsistencies that need investigating such as: theft, admin errors, fraud, or damage. Consider whether obsolete or old stock could be discounted. Remember, the higher your stock levels, the higher your profit, so double check to ensure that your stock on hand figure looks correct.
4 5 6
Asset threshold lowering - Review your asset expenditure. Identify assets (valued up to $1000) that can be expensed (written off in the year that the transaction occurred). Anything over $1000 will be capitalised (added to the Fixed Asset Schedule and written off by a percentage each year). Earn over $180,000 a year? – You might have extra tax to pay if you have not been paying more during the year in provisional tax. The marginal tax rate applies to all employment income over $180,000 a year. It includes extra pay earned in the course of employment, such as bonuses, back pay, redundancy, and retirement payments. It is timely also to review dividend payments. Keeping subsidy records crucial - While Covid-19 related wage subsidies and resurgence support payments are nontaxable, keep accurate records of staff members and business expenses it was applied to, to ensure non-taxable treatment applies and in case of future review by MSD.
Having your Xero reconciled and tidy, with supporting documents will keep your accountant’s questions to a minimum, allowing them to prepare your annual financial statements and income tax returns effectively and efficiently. For more tips, go to the resources page on the website. www.nh-a.co.nz Metropol 31 March, 2022 15

It offers a range of spacious suites in one, two, and four-bedroom configurations with indoor and outdoor living space, terraces with private spas, gas fires, and of course exceptional lake and mountain views. re-school vision screening, while effective at detecting severe visual conditions, does not screen children for reading vision. Problems with close-range focus can lead to decreased reading rate, accuracy and comprehension, says optometrist Kim Stedman of Anstice Optometrists. “Having a full assessment of your child’s visual system is recommended for all school age children, particularly those who are having difficulties with their learning,” she adds. “A SchoolVision Examination at Anstice Optometrists will include an assessment of your child’s distance and near vision with analysis of their visual co-ordination and tracking skills, all which can directly impact academic outcome.”

or the more mature skin, products from a professional aesthetician typically have a higher percentage of active ingredients, thereby delivering a more effective and deep delivery. The professional aesthetician also brings another key element to aid maturing skin - a professional skin analysis to establish skin needs and formulate an action plan. Wendy Barker of Beauty Progress prefers not to prescribe products until a free skin analysis is done. Her analysis includes questions around health, diet and lifestyle, enabling her to prescribe appropriate treatments and products. The ideal scenario is four-weekly facials, but if there’s a special occasion coming up, Wendy recommends weekly treatments. If budget is a factor, treatments can be as few as four per year, supplemented by a customised home care regimen that maintains the clinic’s high-level results. GERnétic is the brand of choice in-clinic, comprising 100 percent natural active plant and marine derived ingredients. Wendy highly recommends GERnétic’s Synchro cream (created in the 1960s by Albert Laporte to heal burns in Paris hospitals) for all skin types. Beauty Progress, Unit 1, 171 Waltham Road, Christchurch. One of the first things you notice about someone is their smile. Being a focal point of the face, it draws many an eye. That’s why for a lot of people losing confidence in their grin, the move to dentures is a saving grace, or more appropriately, saving face. Metropol catches up with Richard Greenlees from Lovebite, to get the downlow on dentures.
Absolutely not! I work closely with each patient to reclaim their smile. Each case is unique, combining skill, experience, knowledge, and revolutionary techniques, I can create beautiful bespoke dentures that reflect each patient’s individuality.
What services do you offer?
A full denture service, this includes full dentures, metal partial dentures, implant supported dentures and firsttime immediate dentures. In addition to dentures I also do crown and bridge work, veneers, and implant work in conjunction with likeminded dental surgeons.
My face appears to have lost volume, can this be corrected?
This is possible, the structure and shape of a patient’s face can be transformed. To attain this top level of treatment (Oral Lift) and for best results I need the patient to work with me. Some people who have had their teeth taken out when they were young, over time experience bone loss (losing volume in the face). This is what I work on to recreate a more youthful appearance. This is a treatment that requires patience as it is a big change and when a patient first sees the transformation it can be a big surprise for them but once they look at the whole picture i.e the improvement to facial structure they are really happy. This Oral Lift is not for all people but more the discerning patient who is looking for a transformation and something special, a change and a lift.

aking care of others comes naturally to most of us. Our children, our parents, our cherished friends, we don’t think twice about looking after them. So why do so many people struggle to take care of their own health and wellbeing? Wellness is now recognised as an entire state of being, free from sickness, debilitating stress, emotional hardship, and many other factors that impact our health. Following decades worth of battling the effects of stress, burnout, and mental illness such as depression and anxiety, the health and wellness space has grown into something much bigger than just physical health. From meditation and mindfulness to supplements and spirituality, wellness ranges across so many areas of life.

Ways to support your wellbeing Practise breathing deeply. We often go about our days breathing shallow, which keeps us in a state of fight or flight. Good breathing technique can do wonders for your stress levels. Find a hobby that you do purely for the fun of it, without the pressure of work or having to be perfect. Finding joy in simple tasks is great for your mental health. Take some time in your day unplugged from screens, podcasts, music, and any other noise. Often when our mind is quiet, our most creative ideas are formed. If you sit at a desk, be sure to stretch your body, and realign yourself at the end of the day, your muscles will thank you. Get outside when you can, especially if the sun is shining. Sunlight causes the release of endorphins, the body’s happy hormones.

THE
Gut health
Self-care
Every year we see wellness trends come and go. Let’s take a look back at some of the all-time greats of the last decade and see what has stuck the course.
When research emerged that gut microbiota play a fundamental role in our health, it became a huge focus in the wellness industry. In 2017, the fermented drink Kombucha sky-rocketed into popularity. Other fermented products including kefir, kimchi, and miso also gained popularity as gut healing additions to our diet. The science states these gut-friendly products can positively influence everything from skin to weight, mood, and energy. Because of this, it looks like the focus on gut health is here to stay.
Products such as face masks, bubble baths, and scented candles swiftly migrated into the wellness industry, gaining real traction in 2010. The idea that taking care of your body and mind is not a luxury, but rather a necessity has taken hold in the ‘hustle culture’ era. This change in attitude to self-care has been a success in the wellness market, with more brands jumping on board each year. For that reason, it looks like the self-care movement isn’t going anywhere.
Hail kale
Skinny teas
Mental health
Bon Appetite named 2012 ‘The Year of Kale’ and since then, Kale’s popularity hailed a new world where health foods became cool and trendy. Cauliflower can now be found in pizza bases, turmeric in lattes, and avocados in desserts. From ancient grains like quinoa to acai berries, consumers have pushed nutrient-dense foods into the mainstream and onto menus and food product labels. While they come in waves of popularity, these trends don’t stick around long. Swiftly along to the next most glamourous superfood we go.
A trend popularised by social media and celebrity endorsements around 2015, skinny teas became the answer for a quick weight loss fix. A mix of natural ingredients, most dangerously contain the herbal laxative, Senna. Of course, short-term ‘weight loss’ was common, but not healthy long-term. In 2020, after a sharp drop in popularity, Instagram announced that it would be restricting posts promoting diet teas. No doubt some new version of skinny tea will be back, but for now, it looks like this trend is out.
Mental health awareness has increased over the last few years, with more initiatives starting each year that encourage taking care of mental health. The stigma about needing help is decreasing, and more and more people are willing to talk about their struggles. There’s been a rise in mindfulness and meditation apps, and we have more celebrities being transparent about their mental health struggles. So mental health awareness in the wellness space looks like it is thankfully, sticking around.

Wanting to avoid that sluggish feeling, nine mates hit upon the Hundy idea during nights out playing poker. They launched their small Kiwi-owned business, named as a play on feeling 100 percent, in late 2019. Today, in addition to processing hundreds of weekly online orders, it is available in more than 500 stores throughout the country. The company’s managing director James Stewart says the main ingredient is an all-
natural herbal extract Dihydromyricetin, also known as DHM, from the Japanese Raisin Tree. “Raisin Tree extract has been used for centuries in Chinese herbal practice, and international scientific studies have found no major side effects associated with the consumption of its active ingredients,” he says. Marketed in capsule form, Hundy also supports recovery from other factors including stressful lifestyles, over-exercising and under-sleeping, and must be taken before going to bed. So how does it work? The DHM aids the liver’s natural detoxification process through the elimination of toxic by-products. At the same time, Hundy protects the brain’s GABA receptors which helps to shake off the all too familiar grey cloud which casts a shadow the morning after. To try Hundy for yourself, head to the website below.

Soul Studio offers hot yoga classes that suit many preferences. Yes, there is a dynamic of hot yoga that is hot, but not all hot yoga is intense and sweaty. Sarah says “Hot yoga BROADLY means the room is heated between 30-40 degrees. Because of the range of yoga modalities and classes we offer the room can be experienced as amibiently warm. Conversing other modalities are undoubtedly hot and juicy.” The world right now can feel heavy and overwhelming, and finding ways to help manage stress is invaluable to your overall health and wellbeing. The warm room encourages you to focus more on your breathing. and this deeper breathing supports both mindful movement and becomes meditative practice helping to unlock true relaxation and stress relief.

Healthy teeth, healthy life There is no time like the present to seek the treatment you need for your teeth and oral health.
T
he condition of your teeth plays an integral role in your overall health, it is an indicator of wellbeing and quality of life. Alarmingly, dental decay is the most common chronic and irreversible disease in New Zealand. Not only can poor oral hygiene lead to tooth cavities and gum disease, it has also been linked to heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Half of adult New Zealanders don’t go to the dentist unless they’re in pain. One piece of advice from leading oral surgeon Keira Malone is, the sooner you have your teeth checked and the necessary treatment done, the better for your overall health. One procedure that can lead to a happier healthier mouth is replacing dentures with dental implants. “Dental implants are a particularly good option for people who may be having problems with retention and movement of their lower dentures,” says Keira. Wisdom tooth removal is another specialist procedure that Keira performs at her rooms in Strowan under local anaesthetic
or intravenous conscious sedation. For patients who require a general anaesthetic for treatment, she operates monthly out of Forte Health Hospital, in Christchurch. Keira is highly qualified and wellregarded meaning you’ll be in one of the best pairs of oral surgery hands in the country. After training at Trinity College, Dublin, she achieved the highest grade ever in the oral surgery programme. Her clinical doctorate involved a three-year full-time research component, that she won national and international awards for. She has continued to increase her knowledge, keeping up with the latest techniques including using cutting edge technology. “The field I work in is both fascinating and an important area of health. I have taught postgraduate students in oral surgery and conscious sedation. I present and lecture at local NZDA branch meetings along with local dentist study groups.” Call Kiera’s rooms to discuss how she can improve your quality of life, 03 365 6642 or email reception@strowanoralsurgery. co.nz. Always better together
It is no surprise that breathing is central to the core of our existence.
The biggest barriers to maintaining a good exercise programme are motivation, time, energy and, most crucially, support.
hat may be surprising to some is that breathing well is fundamental to us operating efficiently. Catherine George has spent her entire professional career as a physiotherapist helping people to optimise their breathing to ensure improved health and wellbeing. What started as a role providing acute care for people in high dependency situations has evolved into a dedicated practice where she shares her expertise to achieve phenomenal benefits across a wide range of debilitating health issues. Asthma, anxiety, breathlessness, stress, sleep disorders, stomach upsets, coughs, long-Covid and other ailments can all be positively addressed
with better breathing techniques. Catherine says, “It’s ridiculously simple. Misunderstanding the relationship between stress response and strain leads to burnout. Retraining your breathing pattern can improve and relieve so many symptoms of distress.” Catherine works alongside children through to adults of all ages, helping them to perform better across many aspects by improving their breathing technique. “There is so much research that supports the idea that being able to breathe well throughout the day enables you to do everything better. Singing and exercising are easier and asthma, anxiety and so many other conditions are relieved when you breathe well.”

Author, speaker, and wellbeing retreat leader are just a few of the hats wellness coach Rachel Grunwell wears. Metropol’s Georgia Summerton chats to her about her experience coaching others towards a happier and healthier life.
A
fter decades working as a journalist, Rachel was offered a wellbeing column while on maternity leave. It was writing this weekly column that introduced her to the health and wellness world. Interviewing some of the best in the business gave her the opportunity to learn from experts, as well as try and review hundreds of fitness trends. “I am so grateful for the journey I went on, it was a blessing to interview all of these people. I really soaked it up. I was a fitness guinea pig, you name it, I’ve done it.” Before this opportunity, movement was never a part of Rachel’s life. In fact, she hated exercise. “I found it so hard. I was never born with the ‘fitness gene’, and I see that in so many of my clients. But now, I’ve never been fitter or stronger in my life. The secret sauce is just showing up, it doesn’t matter how pretty it looks.” Rachel now coaches clients, helping others achieve their goals, across a number of different areas.
Working with her clients is extremely fulfilling, as she is a core part of their journey to finding health and happiness. The most common struggle Rachel sees in her work is a lack of self-trust. ‘“I feel so emotional on this topic. Clients walk in the door and I just want them to see how beautiful they already are. These women are sassy, successful, kicking ass in the corporate world. But they are not wearing the dress they want to wear. How I get them to shift it is with the right self-talk. How would you like your daughter to talk to herself? We need to talk to ourselves with kindness. We tell our kids to be brave and give it a go. We need to do the same with ourselves.” Her advice for women and men trying to live a healthier life is to take it slow, one step at a time. “It can feel overwhelming, and small steps will get you there. With eating it can be starting with one change. More plants on your plate or more protein, or drinking more water in a day. Start with that small step, and then another.”

“Soup for dinner is not unusual in our house. I think it is the one-potmeal aspect I love so much, plus the layering of flavours and textures. Although this laksa can be eaten all year round, it is particularly good as the weather cools down. The aim with this dish is a balance of flavours - salty, sour, sweet and spicy. Check the flavour before serving, and adjust as needed to find the perfect balance.”
6 cups fish or vegetable stock 2 Tbsp soy sauce 1 Tbsp fish sauce or extra soy sauce 3cm knob of fresh ginger, peeled and thinly sliced 1 tsp turmeric powder 1 red chilli, chopped (optional) 1 tsp finely grated palm sugar or honey approx. 300g pumpkin, cut into 2cm cubes 500g white fish fillets, cut into 2cm cubes OR firm tofu, cut into 2cm cubes 4-5 kale leaves or small head of broccoli, roughly chopped 400ml coconut milk 150g rice noodles juice of 1 lime + extra lime wedges to serve chopped coriander leaves
Method

In a large saucepan, combine the stock, soy sauce, fish sauce, ginger, turmeric, chilli and palm sugar. Bring to the boil, add the pumpkin and simmer for 10 minutes. Add the fish or tofu, kale, coconut milk and noodles. Bring back to a gentle simmer and continue to cook for a further 8-10 minutes until the fish and kale are tender. Squeeze in the lime juice and check the flavour, adding extra fish sauce, lime juice and/or palm sugar if needed to get the perfect balance of salty, sour and sweet. Love of lemons A love of fine food, family gatherings, all things Italian, and fresh, high-quality ingredients combine in perfect harmony for this Canterbury entrepreneur. Food enthusiast, business owner and chief whip, designer and bottle washer, Ali McGregor is the founder of Ali’s Lemons.

Let the drinks beGIN Sean Juniper was not a spirit drinker until he decided to make his own gin.
H
aving the surname Juniper, was a major factor in deciding to make gin. My wife rightly pointed out that we didn’t enjoy gin, so I decided to make one that we did.” “Having brewed beer for years, I felt it couldn’t be that hard.” “It only took me two years to get the recipe right,” he adds. Dry gin is where it’s at for Sean, the intensity of flavour comes from the quantity and quality of berries uses in the distilling process. Other botanicals are added which help balance the Juniper
flavour and although Sean won’t divulge the recipes, he says he only uses four botanicals. “As a chef, I liked the idea of using a pot still, which helps to bring all the flavours from the botanicals out. Once you get the balance right, it’s magic. My gins do have quite a distinct Juniper flavour to them.” Visit the Lyttleton, Ohoka, Amberley and Mount Pleasant, farmers markets to try the full range of Jinns and Jinn Liqueurs. childhood immersed in the traditions of farming, gathering with friends and family to share food prepared with love, and a lifelong fascination with Italy, inspired the launch of her artisan business in 2011. Working from the kitchen of her own home, Ali has adapted many traditional recipes to create delicious and distinctive products that showcase her passion for lemons. Limoncello made with lemon zest steeped for eight weeks, reduced sugar and saffron lemon curd, marmalade, melting moments, oldfashioned lemonade and gleaming jars of preserved lemons are just some of her products. Ali sells online and from her stall at the Christchurch Farmers Market. Every product is created from the finest ingredients sourced from organic growers and free-range farmers throughout New Zealand. Homemade and hand-produced in small batches, each of Ali’s products has been specially created to suit the New Zealand palette. Ali adapts them to ensure each recipe combines the best quality and flavour from the finest ingredients. Repeat customers, who cluster around her stall each weekend, are testimony to the popularity of the fare on offer. Let it snow
The weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful…
W
hile the days are still warm, but the nights are cooling down, it is an ideal time to “winter-proof” your home. In the country that usually means a full stack of firewood, lots of kindling and maybe a few fire starters. In the city it’s more of a bring out the soft throws, hang the heavier drapes, and make sure the heat pump is clean and ready to go; an autumn clean of sorts. Don’t forget outdoors either. You don’t want to have to rush outside in the pouring rain to fix and clean gutters and the like.
Here are some suggestions from Metropol: Check that ceiling insulation is in place and close access holes. Weather-strip any windows or doors that are draughty. Clean your chimney and check the fireplace flue. Test run the heat pump and clean filters. Cover your hot water cylinder. Clear your spouting of leaves, debris and plant material. Clean out drainage channels and ensure storm drains are clear.

Functionality at its finest A lounge suite of original design and style is a sculptural masterpiece in itself. Its uniqueness draws the eye and thus the suite becomes an artwork – but even better, a functional artwork.
T
he original lounge suite never dates, whereas the massproduced imported suite, usually of inferior construction, typically follows the latest trends which are soon outdated. McDonald and Hartshorne craft original bespoke lounge suites that not only grace but enhance spaces because of their timeless and classic beauty. Each piece is designed to fit exactly into the desired area size, whether that be free-wall space or a snug corner. The showroom’s vast and diverse range of fabrics, from plain to textured in a variety of colours, gives clients plenty of inspiration from which to make their final decision. Cushion fillings range from foam through to feather and pearl and duvet wrap. “We take pride in producing affordable, well-made pieces that never compromise on quality,” Keith Hartshorne says. Keith advises people to ring and book an appointment to ensure they get to meet with him and discuss their requirements in detail. We’re lucky that furniture these days comes in all manner of materials including metal.
design trend popular since 2020 – and at various times in decades past – metal furniture has come a long way since its initial entry into the furniture stakes in the 1950s. Today metal furniture styles range from antique wrought iron, to minimalist chrome and can be incorporated into any room design. Home or office, if that’s the look you want there’s plenty to choose from. Metal’s durability also makes it ideal for common use areas and the outdoors.

Here are a few ideas: Insulation - from pink fibreglass batts to the woollen variety and polystyrene-like slabs, insulation is a must in the ceiling, the walls and under the floor. Don’t forget to wrap your hot water cylinder. Heat source – wood burning fires, gas heaters and electric heat pumps all offer warmth during the colder months. Ventilation – ducted ventilation systems and builtin extractor fans work wonders for taking moisture out of the air inside your home. Open windows even in winter for 30 minutes daily. Invest in passive solar heating if building or renovating. Check your windows - reduce heat loss through double or even triple glazing, draught protection, and floor length double layer curtains. Don’t dry clothes inside the home. If using a drier, vent it outside. Check for drainage issues, this could be pipe leaks under the home, or surface water entering the subfloor space. Consult a plumber or drainage expert to rectify any issues. Decorate with indoor plants such as the peace lily (aka Spathiphyllum) which helps to oxygenate the air. The peace lily is well known for its air-purifying abilities, breaking down and neutralising toxic gases such as carbon monoxide and formaldehyde.

piece of quiet comfort, many homeowners are looking for ways to up the serenity of their own homes, baches or both. Inspired by country hotels in the Cotswolds, this soothingly laidback bedroom has been layered with soft,
vertically so as to subtly echo the hand-painted lines on the back wall. The panelling is painted in Resene Surf Crest, a pale sea foam green, cool and milky in tone and trimmed in Resene Astronaut, a deep navy. This high-contrast hue has been carried throughout the space on the lamp base and small vases to create continuity while a few handpainted stripes and scallops on the bedside lamp in Resene Zephyr and the layering of striped bedlinens and cushions builds just the right level of cohesion for the ‘theme’ to carry through. As a finishing touch, a few minor details in a gingery ochre have been added, such as the round velvet cushion and the picture frame. Try painting a few small accessories in Resene Dark Buff for a similar look.

Both these have been brought about through a plenitude of vertical lines. While wallpaper is commonplace in English homes, both urban and rural, you can try their hand at a handpainted wall design instead. We started with Resene Mystic as our main wall colour before adding narrow vertical stripes in Resene Relax two thirds of the way up the wall. By not carrying the lines all the way to the ceiling, the design creates a grounding effect and keeps the stripes from overwhelming. This feature wall has been offset by a return wall clad in tongue-and-groove panelling, which has been installed

Helping overcome hidden obstacles With 30 years of combined experience in the real estate industry Kelvin Howell and Jacqui McBride of Mike Pero Fendalton really can say they understand all aspects of buying and selling property.
I
t’s an unpredictable market currently,” says Kelvin. “We are hearing through commentators in the media that prices might finally be falling. Yet recently an economist told us that in Christchurch they are maintaining a steady level or are even up slightly. With such uncertainty it is vital to select agents who understand the business, the value of good marketing and who truly want the best for their clients with whom they have built a close relationship.” Kelvin and Jacqui say that as the market changes there are many hidden obstacles that pop up unexpectedly. With their expertise and knowledge there is no need to panic as they can
guide clients through what might otherwise look like difficult times. At Mike Pero Fendalton they tell their clients that their home has to be the best it can in order to attract people to view. That’s properties such as the one they have on the market right now in Broomfield - a beautifully presented three bedroom, two bathroom postearthquake build, set on an easy care section overlooking a reserve – for those wanting a quiet peaceful life surrounded by other quality homes. This spacious home has a modern kitchen, with a separate lounge and the option of either an office workspace on the mezzanine floor or another living/rumpus area for the young members of the family. www.fendalton.mikepero.com
Ricky Rhodes
Not only does Mike Pero Fendalton work with both buyers and sellers on the sales side of real estate, but they can assist with financial matters too. “We work closely with Ricky Rhodes from Mike Pero Mortgages who helps our clients get their finances and insurance together in a timely fashion to secure their purchase,” say Kelvin and Jacqui. “With a lot of properties now being sold at auction or by deadline sale, time is not on the purchaser’s side when aligning finances and insurance. Working closely with us and Ricky, we can take the pressure off them to ensure that all the paperwork is in order prior to putting pen to paper to buy.” This is where good agents with a proven track record come into their own. “We at Mike Pero Fendalton really can provide you with all you need to put you in the best position to either sell or purchase your next property. If you are thinking of buying or selling, or looking for good advice please contact us.” Metropol 31 March, 2022 67

75 years of GranTurismo Maserati’s GranTurismo is a way of life for many drivers; a high-performance car, suitable for long distances and also for comfortable journeys.
I
t all began 75 years ago with the Maserati A6 1500, launched in March 1947 at the Geneva Motor Show. That first GranTurismo, the Tipo A6 took its name from the project, but is better known as the A6 1500 GranTurismo.
In the decades since then, Maserati has extensively revamped the technology and design of the GranTurismo. Next year will see the launch of the next generation, which will be the Trident brand’s first 100 percent electric car.

Lose weight Extra weight in the form of clutter plays havoc on your fuel consumption as the engine is having to work harder. So, getting rid of all unnecessary heavy items from your car can make a difference.
Wheel Alignment If your wheels are out of alignment, your car will use more fuel as the engine works to keep you in a straight line. Getting your wheels aligned prevents increased wear on the tyres and saves you money at the pump.
Reduce Drag Remove all exterior add-ons which could increase aerodynamic drag. You want your car to be as slippery as possible through the air.
Plan your trips If you can, combine as many errands as possible into one trip. This not only gives you better time management but means you aren’t using your car as much for only one or two tasks.
Drive Eco Smart Be gentle on the throttle. Refrain also from going on and off the accelerator when driving. A consistent speed while keeping the revs low is key to maximising on-road economy. Stay safe out there.

or starters, the MY22 Forester gets a new grille and a sharper looking headlight and taillight cluster. Changes inside are subtle. You now get an 8-inch infotainment system over the previous model’s 6.5-inch set up. Subaru’s EyeSight safety suite also gets some upgrades including Lane Departure Prevention, Lane Centring and Autonomous Emergency Steering. My test car was the entry level Forester at $42,990 plus ORC, but you also get the X Sport, Premium, e-Boxer Hybrid and Premium e-Boxer Hybrid variants. While the hybrids are a bit lacklustre, the petrol Forester provides one of the best petrol and drive combos around. Also, that 2.5L Boxer engine seems somewhat quieter than before. Tweaks to the dampers and suspension make for a more comfortable ride and the X-Mode AWD system is still very rugged and capable. Also, that 220mm of ground clearance means buyers can still rough it more than others. When you factor in price, onboard tech and its capabilities off the beaten track, the Forester is worthy of its place in the midsized SUV inner circle.

CARING FOR OUR ENVIRONMENT WORDS BEN SELBY
HONDA IS NO STRANGER TO A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE.
C
ompany founder Soichiro Honda once said to his engineers, “leave the skies blue for our children.” This mantra continues today with Honda striving to be at the forefront of sustainability. One area which has been a phenomenal success for the brand actually has nothing to do with cars. Honda’s TreeFund and Planting Days
have been operating since 2004. Since then, Honda has planted over 700,000 trees all over New Zealand. With planting days every season from May through to September each year, and the continued growth of the Honda Forest as part of the Kaiapoi Regeneration Project, the brand shows no signs of letting up when it comes to growth and the environment. It’s the same story with the current Honda range. The current Jazz e:HEV was one of the most impressive new small cars to be released last year and its electric hybrid capabilities have been given an extra boost by the incorporation of three unique drive modes. The first of these is conventional engine drive with the others being selfcharging hybrid mode and full electric mode by way of the battery and electric motors providing propulsion. One could say Honda’s sustainable future has been given the “green” light. www.honda.co.nz
