Marching on Almost a quarter of the way through 2022, and already many aspects of life as we know it have changed, once again. Change is not necessarily a bad thing and there are many ways to adapt to it and even take advantage of it. NATIONAL MULTI-AWARD WINNERS 2013 - 2019

History and nature have shown us time and again not to expect stability in our lives. Change is an unavoidable constant, at home, at work and at play. Sometimes it’s within our control, but most often it is not. The key is accepting, and adapting or adjusting to change. Acceptance might not be easy, but remember that while we might not be free from change, we do have the freedom to decide how we respond to it. Adaptive leaders view all changes, wanted or unwanted, as an expected part of the human experience, rather than as a tragic anomaly that victimises unlucky

people. Instead of feeling personally attacked by ignorant leaders, evil lawmakers, or an unfair universe, they remain engaged in their work and spot opportunities to fix long-standing problems with customer service and to tweak antiquated systems. By contrast, many who struggle have been found to be consumed by thoughts of “the good old days”, and spend their energy trying to figure out why their luck has turned sour. Dancing the night away Inspired by cheap Champagne, faux luxury, and the destruction of our natural world, choreographer Jessie McCall brings four dancers to the stage for a joyful yet confronting dance-theatre work Daybreak Estate, playing in Christchurch on 17 – 19 March.

aybreak Estate was created in 2020 and premiered in Experimental Dance Week Aotearoa in the same year. Described by viewers as “haunting and charming”, “wildly clever”, and “hilarious in a somewhat devastating way”, the enthusiastic response from audiences inspired this remount and tour in 2022. The work has evolved since its first outing to reflect changes in the team’s own lives and perspectives. Dancers include Liana Yew, Sharvon Mortimer, Olivia McGregor, and Terry Morrison. “Daybreak Estate is the name of a cheap cask-wine brand. I love the contrast and contradiction of this affordable, bulk, low brow product with the grand and rather elitist sounding name. I feel that it speaks to the inevitable and utterly human contradictions, underbellies, and facades that we all play with in life, and that this work explores,” says McCall. As in all of McCall’s work, Daybreak Estate will offer bold physicality, intimacy, and a chance to laugh out loud. Her work refuses to tell the viewer what to take away, but she aims to provoke with a series of images and notions around luxury, glamour, community, environmental destruction, social sabotage, and the natural world. Venue: Little Andromeda, Level 1/134 Oxford Terrace, Christchurch Central City. andromeda.co.nz

An entertaining entrepreneur Thespian, entrepreneur, entertainer, and friend. These are just a few words that describe celebrated Christchurch actor Peter Rowley. Metropol’s Kia Dirkson caught up with him to see what is the next phase for one of the country’s most enduring comedians.

12 3 March, 2022 Metropol

O

n a bright summer afternoon, a warm smile greeted me at the door. The charming face of Peter Rowley is unmistakable. Bright eyes beaming from behind his glasses welcomed me into his Merivale home. Within that smile is the deeply rich history Peter has with the South Island. Hailing originally from Timaru, he moved to Christchurch, attended Christ’s College and spent his professional career entertaining audiences both in New Zealand and around the world. Once considered the Kiwi satirical series staple, delighting households all over Aotearoa in the 1980s, his list of credentials is admirable. McPhail and Gadsby, The Billy T. James Show, Letter to Blanchy, Power Rangers and Footrot Flats: A Dog’s Tale, just to name a few. “Jon Gadsby, David McPhail and Billy T. James - these were my dear friends. We were creating something brilliant for New Zealand and having the time of our lives together,” he reminisces. He is pictured above right with Billy T. James, on a trip to Texas, visiting the mansion from the American television show Dallas. “We did a lot of great things together, Billy and I,” he reflects. Billy’s tragic, early passing in 1991, aged 42, took a toll on Peter emotionally, and he often reflects on their history. “I learnt so much from

Jon Gadsby, David McPhail, and Billy T. James - these were my dear friends. We were creating something brilliant for New Zealand, and having the time of our lives together.

him about the business over the years that we worked together. I still miss my friend every day.” A life-changing event occurred in 1977 when the late Jon Gadbsy cast him on A Week of It and realised that acting was his true passion. Since then, Peter has never looked back and he fervently thanks Gadsby for that pivotal moment. Over the decades, Peter was presented with numerous business opportunities that helped him grow, learn and develop a successful entrepreneurial attitude. Having once dabbled in the spirit business, then specialising in vodka, Peter has now turned his talents to being part of the rising tide of gin. More popular than ever, New Zealand now boasts a multibillion-dollar liquor industry that is increasing each year, and gin is at the forefront. Peter and his brother now produce their own label. Their point of difference is simple. “Our gin is pure, clean, no additives and not overloaded with botanicals making it easy to drink straight and for mixologists to create bespoke cocktails for customers.” Not missing a moment life has to offer, Peter has adopted a grassroots approach and is now touring the country with Laughing Club Gin, stopping in-person at local bars, restaurants and venues to introduce them to his personal tipple. Cheers.

The beauty of botanicals: The name ‘Gin’ is derived from either the French genièvre or the Dutch jenever, which both mean juniper. A fine gin typically contains between six and 10 botanicals, which create the character in the spirit. The rise of New Zealand-made gins has seen various

companies include all manner of herbs, fruits, berries, exotics and more mundane botanicals such as coriander, citrus (oranges, lemons and limes), plant shoots and roots, orris, liquorice and even gorse flowers, along with the classic juniper berries. Metropol 3 March, 2022 13

urviving for more than three decades in the cut and thrust of the hair, beauty and fashion industry is no mean feat. Expanding and diversifying a multi-layered business in the same often fluid industry is an even bigger achievement, and one that Christchurch businesswoman Vicki Ogden-O’Fee is justifiably proud of. The brains and drive behind V for Hair and Beauty, Victoria Jane, and VJ Barbers, Vicki started her hairdressing career by working in a salon after school, aged 13. “I have been hairdressing ever since. I absolutely love my job and the artistic side of hairdressing,” she admits. After completing her apprenticeship, Vicki went out on her own, at 18, in Timaru doing mobile hairdressing. Three years down that track, she moved to Christchurch and bought her first salon. Since then, Vicki has started and sold many salons, until settling in Merivale in 2010. Business has had its “ups and downs” with recessions, earthquakes and pandemics. “We always need to think outside the square, be positive, look for new ideas and opportunities,” says Vicki and that is exactly what she has done. “With the Covid-19 pandemic I saw an opportunity to grow our e-commerce for hair and beauty product sales nationwide. This has grown over the last two years to include our own new brand Victoria Jane, which we are now also about to start shipping internationally.” The new colourful brand includes collections of latest styles and trends in fashion accessories

and homewares, (pictured) with Vicki holding special launches to introduce her wares to clients. New opportunities excite her, and bringing them to fruition drives her. “…my love of fashion, arts and the passion to succeed at new ventures.” Colour and pattern play a big part in her life, evident both in her personal fashion style and in her designs. “I am quite a vibrant dresser with Trelise Cooper and Camilla being my favourite clothes designers. I also love colour in furnishings, décor and art,” she explains Inspiration comes from all sources, although browsing the internet, especially when travel bans have been in force, is a favourite. Vicki takes her ideas and turns them into new fabric designs and fashion items such as hand bags, bathroom towel art and wall art. Being a qualified personal colour analyst helps, another reminder of how important colour is in her life. She enjoys bringing colour into other people’s lives too, helping them sort out their personal colour palettes, body shapes, wardrobe planning, personal shopping and total image makeovers. “Fashions and trends come and go, but some things that never go out of fashion are confidence, class and style,” she says. “These two go together. If you feel good about yourself and how you look, you will naturally portray confidence. When confidence and style are paired together and are in sync, this is where someone comes across as having their own individual style and this can also be identified as your own personal brand.”

Vicki’s top tips for those wanting to succeed in business today: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Never give up, no matter what. Hard work pays off. Know your business and educate yourself to do new roles before delegating. Work alongside people who share your ethics and vision. Keep an eye to the future.

Print and paper: facts vs fiction

Focusing on forward

Paper has proven an integral part of our lives since it was invented, sometime between 50 and 120 AD, primarily to record data and to keep knowledge safe for generations.

C

enturies down the track, magazines such as fortnightly lifestyle magazine Metropol are still doing just that, despite misconceptions that paper is wasteful, detrimental to the environment and responsible for deforestation. The truth is actually the reverse. Print media has evolved into a highly sustainable form of communication in today’s digital society. It’s been scientifically proven that growing trees – used to make paper – is good for planet earth. Readers are not destroying the planet by relaxing with a Metropol (or any other

magazine or flyer) in their hands. Using digital devices, powered by electricity produced from coal, can be far more harmful to planet earth, and New Zealand is currently using far more coal than ever before to generate electricity. Jonathon Porritt, CoFounder, Forum for the Future says that there aren’t many industries around that can aspire to becoming genuinely sustainable, however the paper industry is one that is inherently sustainable. Agritech companies attracting millions

18 3 March, 2022 Metropol

New Zealand agritech companies are attracting millions of dollars of investment, says AgriTechNZ chief executive Brendan O’Connell.

emarkable progress is being made in new global partnerships, collaborations, investments and team growth, and this has set the scene for what he predicts will be a burst of growth in 2022 and beyond. One innovator is Dunedin’s AbacusBio which last year announced its deepening relationship with Bayer Crop Science, in the area of predictive plant breeding. “It’s a powerful partnership and an excellent example of New Zealand research and technology strengths having global impact,” Brendon O’Connell says. In fiscal 2020, the Bayer group employed around 100,000 people and had sales of 41.4 billion euros. Ag software leaders FarmIQ and Farmax have joined forces with AgResearch, in a strategic partnership combining research and commercial skills with both domestic and international potential. AgResearch will become FarmIQ’s preferred provider of science and research going forward. FarmIQ will acquire Farmax and blend the teams.

The agricultural science integrated within Farmax makes it unique and has helped deliver real impact to the sector estimated to be $1.1 billion in increased gross margin over the last decade alone. “Agritech startup Auckland orchard management software company Hectre is also positioning for global growth after attracting $3.5 million in new capital. “The team is already trading in global markets and this vote of confidence will further empower them to build the team and bring new capabilities to fruit growers and packers around the world,” says O’Connell. The company’s latest technology, Spectre, uses artificial intelligence to provide data for growers on fruit size and colour and helps estimate crop yields. The technology can also help with decision-making in fruit pack houses regarding storage, packing, sales, and waste reduction. Developed for apples, the technology is now also being used in the citrus industry.

Reaching for the stars Women in Space Aotearoa New Zealand is a new organisation dedicated to expanding opportunities for women and other gender minorities to work in space fields and pursuing gender equity in the space sector.

I

ts aim is to provide a professional network and inclusive community that supports women working in the space sector in New Zealand, provides mentorship for women wanting to enter the sector and encourages the next generation of New Zealand women to pursue a career in space, particularly in STEM fields. Members represent a wide variety of fields in the space sector, including science, engineering, business, medicine, policy, and law. It includes many women working in the New Zealand space sector including at universities and research institutes, in government roles and in the New Zealand

space industry. Founding members include University of Canterbury’s Dr Michele Bannister and Dr Sarah Kessans, and UC graduate Kate Breach. A planetary scientist at the University of Canterbury, Dr Bannister describes her role as “incredibly varied”. “On any given day, I can be working on newly arrived images from one of the world’s big telescopes, involved in a collaborative chat about details of a space mission with colleagues overseas, helping students work through their understanding of the latest finding in planetary geology, solving a data visualisation problem with

Python programming, or organising a field trip to our observatory at Tekapo — and that’s just one day of the week.” she explains. Dr Kessans’ work focuses on using plants, fungi, and bacteria to produce chemical products ranging from pharmaceuticals to agrichemicals. “We’re working towards developing strategies for food and pharmaceutical production for future space exploration,” she says. The aim is to develop organisms and facilities to provide this production in space. For more information visit the website www.womeninspace.co.nz.

Realty rocks her world In 2001, Fernanda Hammett left her home and family in Brazil for an extended visit to Christchurch, primarily to perfect her English.

S

ão Paulo, with a population in excess of 20 million was a far cry from the Garden City of Christchurch, population circa 450,000. The effusive, fun loving and adventurous 17-year-old embraced the city, its people and the experience. Within two years she had an excellent grasp of the language and had fallen in love with the Kiwi culture, including one Kiwi in particular, along with his seven siblings and parents who were later to become her in-laws. That cross-continent love affair has blossomed since the couple married in 2002. In June this year, Fernanda and Josh Hammett will celebrate 20 fabulous years of marriage, three children Kash (13), Nina (10) and Bela (5) and a successful business enterprise born out of a fierce sense of

passion, perseverance and outstanding people skills. Fernanda is a real estate agent for Harcourts Grenadier and at last year’s annual industry awards event in Wellington, she was placed first-equal in the Best Client Experience category. For Fernanda, the accolade was a fitting reward for five years of hard graft, tenacity, commitment and dedication to her clients and the team she works alongside. “It was such a positive affirmation. The best reward. I love my job and I love the people I work with.” Fernanda welcomes a call from anyone thinking of buying or selling. Based in Halswell, she works across the city and rural areas with current listings in Cashmere, Kaiapoi, Bryndwr and Halswell.

Fernanda’s top three tips when preparing your home for market:

1 2

Declutter; get rid of those piles of unnecessary mess and jumble. Stuff. Be. Gone.

3

Stage the property if it is vacant. If not, add selected pieces to create the ‘wow’ factor; colourful cushions, luscious plants and sumptuous throws are just the beginning

Imagine you are the buyer and visualise the home from their perspective. Is it sparklingly clean? Are there fresh flowers? Are the lawns mown? Have you provided all the information a buyer may want e.g. LIM, Title?

A golden age An ancient Chinese proverb tells us that real gold is not afraid of the melting pot. Now is an ideal time to test that if you have any of the precious metal you don’t want.

G

old prices internationally are high and may rise even more due to soaring crude oil prices and conflict between Russia and the Ukraine. Locally, Matt Power, owner of Riccartonbased The Stamp, Coin & Gold Exchange, is looking for gold and paying top prices. “People often have old gold stashed away in boxes. “Maybe it has been inherited from a relative, it is beyond repair or just not wanted,” says Matt. “That’s where I come in. I want it, and I will pay a fair price for it,” he explains. In addition to owning the business, Matt is a licensed second-hand dealer, former financial advisor, and former investment property specialist. When his children grew up and left home, he decided it was time to take a break from the financial world and to make a childhood hobby - collecting coins and stamps - his new business. Now he not only gathers up surplus gold,

but also unwanted silver, coins, stamps, medals, collectibles and much more. A silver tea set, a solid silver flute and a multitude of stamp albums line the shop’s shelves. Working along side Matt are two other specialist staff, who know their carats from their carrots. Trust is important in his business and he encourages people to pop into the shop at 134a Riccarton Road, across from Westfield Mall, or to call him on 0800 Exchange (39 24 26). “Prices [gold] may continue to rise but they change daily so now is a good time to sell, while they are high.” Matt guarantees payment, and also pays 10 percent more that other licensed second-hand dealers. “Come in, we will sit down and check the carats, and weight and agree on a price. “Whether it is gold or something else that needs a new home, I’d like to see what you have,” he adds.

Making mask sense With many children now required to wear masks, questions have arisen about what is the best type to wear. University of Canterbury Associate Professor of Epidemiology Dr Arindam Basu offers some evidence-based advice.

1 2 3

A medical, blue and white, disposable surgical mask fitted to a child’s face is the best option. They can be adjusted to make them smaller in size and they have two layers. Surgical/medical masks are more effective than a plain cloth mask.

4

A child/student should take at least two masks to school each day. If one mask gets soiled or wet, it is important to change that mask. A zip lock plastic bag is generally better than a paper bag to store new and used masks.

If a suitable sized respirator-type P2 mask is available and fits well, this type of mask is preferable over a poorly fitting medical mask. In general, an N95/P2 mask with a good fit is better than a medical mask.

5

Dispose of surgical masks once worn. If that is not possible, then wash in a washing machine (cold or warm wash) and properly air dry before they are worn again.

The concept is to keep the face and nose covered in a way that allows for breathing but does not allow fluid particles from sneezes or coughs to escape. Any mask with ear loops tight enough to keep it on a child’s face, should be fine.

6

Respirator masks can be reused up to five times, but set them aside for a few days, before wearing them again. Dry them in the sun to help get rid of allergens, and put them aside for about 48 hours before re-using.

Let them learn through play PROBLEM SOLVING IMAGINATION CREATIVITY

We offer the best non invasive technologies, for skin rejuvenation, lifting and tightening

The gentle way to lift and tighten Ultherapy remains the gold standard for non-invasive face lifting.

I

t is the only FDA-cleared non-invasive ultrasound skin lifting treatment for the brow, under the chin, jaw-line and neck that helps to replace collagen and give sagging skin a lift. Not all face sculpting treatments are created equal, and in determining the right face lifting programme for you, you need to take into account your budget, downtime, after-care maintenance among other factors. Ultherapy stands head and shoulders above alternative treatments. It harnesses

the body’s own regenerative response to gradually lift and firm skin around the eyes, under the chin, along the jawline and neck. It delivers micro focused ultrasound energy directly into the specific layers of the skin to stimulate collagen production. By the age of 40, we are breaking down more collagen than we are creating. We need to deposit back that collagen to prevent laxity and other changes that occur rapidly as we age. Very few procedures can do this—not even surgery, and Ultherapy is one of the treatments

that does, as shown in clinical studies. It would be unrealistic to expect results as dramatic as a facelift, but it is great for those looking for a gradual, natural looking lift. Ultherapy can’t replace lost volume (hyaluronic fillers or biostimulants are needed for this) nor eliminate excess fat (but CoolTech can). For the ultimate jaw-line rejuvenation a combination is often required, and The Skin Rejuvenation Clinic on Wairakei Road is the only place in Christchurch where you can get them all. www.skinrejuvenationclinic.co.nz

Secrets

TO

The beauty industry is booming, and full of an overwhelming amount of advice and claims on how to achieve flawless, smooth and wrinkle-free skin. Educating yourself on what ingredients, products and techniques work for your skin is the very best tool you can have. Here are a few to consider.

Vitamin C

Retinol

The ingredient synonymous with oranges, vitamin C is a powerhouse addition to your skincare routine. It has unrivalled brightening capabilities that can help with hyperpigmentation. A powerful antioxidant, vitamin C not only counteracts harmful damage from external aggressors like pollution and smog, it protects against them too.

Championed for its wrinkle-reducing and texture-improving properties, retinol is regarded as one of the most effective anti-ageing skincare ingredients available. It works hard to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, boost the skin’s elasticity and improve the appearance of pores and pigmentation. Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that’s available in different strengths. If you are new to retinol, it is best to ease it into your routine slowly, only using it once or twice a week and alongside skincare containing niacinamide, ceramides, and antioxidants.

When you go to sleep, your skin is in repair and renewal mode. It works to repair any damage from the day and boost its natural functions, such as collagen and elastin production. Using nighttime to assist your skin in regenerating is where your skincare comes in. Products such as glycolic acid and lactic acid are great to help your skin’s natural exfoliation processes remove dead skin cells and congestion. Vitamin A retinoids are also good for promoting skin renewal and collagen production. Serums and moisturisers rich in vitamins, ceramides and humectants like hyaluronic acid are also great to layer on at night to replenish moisture stores.

skincare Neck care

The skin on our neck is thinner and more delicate than the skin on our face, so needs to be taken care of. With all of the movement and stretching your neck does every day, the skin around this area can be more prone to deeper wrinkles. Your usual face creams can be extended beyond your jawline and down your neck and decolletage, although there are specifically formulated products for a more targeted approach to this area. Hardworking ingredients like sunscreen, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and retinol are all equally beneficial for neck skincare.

Jade rollers A tool that has been popping up more and more in the beauty and skincare industry, jaderollers stem from gua sha. A time-honoured tool that is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and has been around for thousands of years, gua sha is used to promote healing in the body and remove energy blockages. When used correctly on the face, jade rollers can promote blood circulation and encourage lymphatic drainage, which eliminates fluid build-up and reduces puffiness. It might just become your new best friend for those puffyfaced, sleepy mornings.

Cleanse away In nearly every skincare routine, cleansing is a core part of the process.

I

t makes sense after all. Cleansing thoroughly helps to wash away dirt, dead skin cells, makeup, and anything else that might clog your pores or cause general dullness.

While it seems quite straightforward, cleansing correctly can make a big difference in the health of your skin. Here are a few tips to keep in mind.

Quickly and gently Try to aim for 20 to 30 seconds of cleansing, or until the product lathers up on your face. Any longer could be too harsh on your skin. Washing too aggressively or for too long can lead to red, irritated, skin.

Not too hot While using hot water to cleanse may feel nice, too hot is not good. It can be damaging to the delicate skin on your face. It also can strip the skin of its natural oil barrier, leading to drier, irritated skin.

Twice a day For most of us, morning and night cleansing works well. But at the bare minimum, at night is most important as during the day you accumulate dirt and oils, as well as makeup that is best not left on the skin. If you have sensitive skin, then just cleansing with water in the mornings is a good option.

Separate exfoliation Remember that your daily cleanser is not an exfoliator. While it is important to exfoliate a few times a week, overuse can disrupt the delicate skin barrier that keeps your face hydrated and protected.

Treating varicose veins Varicose veins can be assessed, scanned, and treated all within the purpose-built medical facility, Specialists @ 256, right here in Christchurch.

I

was recommended to Peter Laws for treatment of my veins that had become quite debilitating,” one delighted patient says. “The procedure was done under local anaesthetic and was pain-free and an easy recovery. I was astonished at the quick result and how amazing I felt only a week later.” While Specialist Vascular Surgeon Peter Laws is renowned for the investigation and treatment of varicose veins, vascular surgery involves so much more. Aneurysmal disease (a dilated blood vessel) and peripheral vascular disease (hardening and narrowing of the arteries) are two such conditions. Aneurysmal disease is a silent progressive and potentially fatal condition that affects up

to five percent of men over the age of 65. Amazingly, it can be excluded with a very simple, painless, and extremely quick ultrasound scan, and where treatment is indicated, modern techniques may see you home as soon as the next day. Peripheral vascular disease is often symptomatic, resulting in pain in the calves on walking. When advanced, it can lead to more debilitating symptoms with pain at rest and worse. Simple blood pressure measurements can confirm or exclude this condition, leading to primary prevention advice, techniques, and measures that can often help to reduce the severity, reverse or treat the condition. Whatever your vascular condition, Peter Laws and his team will be able to guide you through the process.

A

lopecia, baldness, dandruff, hair-fall, hair-loss, hair breakages, and pattern thinning, though often associated with any number of health issues, can also be stress-related. Certified trichologist, Dr Padmaja Redeka of Hairmantra Hair and Scalp Clinic, has noticed a significant rise in clients seeking treatment for these problems in the past two years. Dr Redeka says three signs indicative of an unhealthy scalp are hair that is oily the day after it’s washed, pain at the hair root, and the scalp showing as plainly visible through the hair. “Hair and skin are the mirrors of the body. Our health status is reflected in our appearance and it’s important to not ignore those early signs that something could be wrong.” Diagnosis by microscopic analysis detects the underlying cause of the problem and a healthy hair programme, tailored specifically to the client’s individual needs, is then drawn up. Dr Redeka says consistency is key and that six-month treatments see outstanding results. For more information, call 021 069 0058, or email hairmantra@yahoo.com www.hairmantra.co.nz

The hidden meaning of concussion Gill Redden has witnessed time and time again the aftermath of concussions or bad head knocks that were never identified at the time of the original accident.

T

hat’s because a trauma anywhere always sets up a chain of events which the body tries to accommodate for as long as it can. The body is very good at masking and compensating the impact of a head knock or fall. Gill, a specialist CranioSacral Therapist, uses internationally accepted CranioSacral techniques on the full body. These techniques loosen up or unjam head bones, the membranes surrounding the brain (which then form the spinal canal),

tailbones, organs and nerves allowing the spinal fluid to move freely around the brain. This enables the spinal fluid to do its job of feeding and detoxifying the brain. Potentially the long-term benefit is a healthier and more resilient brain. Problems can appear sometimes immediately, but other times years later, Gill explains. From experience, she believes that if a person has one concussion or has had subsequent concussions, they are highly likely to have poor brain health later on in life. CranioSacral helps bones and other things move better again, by supporting the spinal fluid to clean and feed the brain, so that the repercussions of concussion may be somewhat mitigated. Gill’s extensive website showcases positive testimonials ranging from rugby players who suffered head knocks, to others suffering ongoing issues who have found relief after attending the Bealey Avenue clinic. Concussion symptoms may include migraines, headaches, dizziness, tinnitus, nausea, double-vision, fatigue, poor sleeping, vomiting, neck pain, nerve problems, poor concentration, aggression, depression and anxiety.

Quick facts about concussions Concussions do not discriminate against age, gender, or lifestyle, they can happen at any time to anyone. They take time to heal. Often people return to a healthy, active life before the brain has fully recovered from a concussion. There are an estimated 36,000 head injuries in New Zealand every year. Signs of a concussion aren’t always obvious, and can include having trouble concentrating, brain fog, trouble sleeping, and spells of nausea.

What is CranioSacral Therapy? CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle, non-invasive approach to treating concussions. It helps release tensions deep in the body through the central nervous system to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance. For more information, visit www.concussion.nz or call 03 365 7801.

One pot wonder

As the weather gets colder, the meals get heartier. And there are no complaints here.

44 3 March, 2022 Metropol

C

ooking in autumn and winter means warming, cosy dinners, the kind of food that warms the body and soul. As well as ensuring delicious taste, creating recipes that require minimum dishes and equipment is also a huge yes for lazy, cold nights. One-pot meals are the perfect solution for easy cooking that still packs a flavour punch. Letting ingredients simmer away and cook down boosts food with so much flavour. And when everything cooks together in one pot, layers of flavour are even more enhanced.

Dishes such as risotto, soup, paella, and stew are all classic hearty meals that can be cooked in one pot (or pan) on the stove. There are also oven-based meals like a pasta bake or rice bake that if prepared correctly, can be cooked in one dish. Even classic family favourites like a mac and cheese can be a perfect one-pot meal. The most important component to get correct for any one-pot meal is the liquid measurements and ensuring there is the right amount of water, stock or sauce to cook whatever starch is in the dish. While traditionally pasta and rice are boiled in water, then added to a dish once cooked, with a one-pot meal this process is done at the same time as everything else cooking. The last thing you want is undercooked rice in your finished dish, so be sure to follow along with a recipe as a guide for mastering your one-pot deliciousness.

cuisine

Hearty, warming & delicious Master a delicious one-pot dinner with these simple tips.

Risotto

Pasta

Soup

The Italian rice-based dish is deliciously creamy, due to the starch from the rice. For this reason, it is best not to rinse your rice before cooking. Patience is key with risotto, and to get the right texture a low and slow cooking method is best. Rushing a risotto could lead to an overcooked, stodgy result. As can over stirring. Risotto is a dish that is well known for needing a close eye and constant stirring spoon. However, over stirring can also ruin the texture. With the correct cooking temperature, the rice will continue to move on its own, so just stir enough to ensure the rice doesn’t stick to the bottom.

When pasta is cooked in the same pot as the sauce, the flavour of the dish is even more enhanced. The magic of this technique is in the starchy cooking water. When traditionally cooked in a separate pot, the pasta cooking water is often added to the sauce. But in the one-pot, the pasta water becomes the sauce and gives it a beautiful velvety finish. Any pasta that cooks in under 10 minutes will work well, so long as the water ratio is correct. Cook off all of your ingredients first to develop the flavour. Think garlic, onion, carrot, celery and your protein. Then add the pasta, water and any liquid additions like crushed tomatoes. Once cooked you can stir in some cream and herbs.

A hearty soup is a great way to load up on veggies, and hard to beat in overall flavour. Starting with a delicious base is the best way to build flavour, and using a good quality soffritto is the best way to do this. Stemming from traditional Italian cooking, a soffritto is made by finely chopping key ingredients such as onion, garlic, celery and carrots and cooking them gently in olive oil, for 15-20 minutes. The low heat allows the flavours to release and brings a richer taste to the dish. Then add in your remaining veggies, herbs and stock. A squeeze of lemon before serving will brighten all of the flavours even more.

Add rice and stir for 1–2 minutes to lightly toast. Add wine and allow to evaporate fully, then add hot stock, salt and pepper, and stir to combine. Simmer gently, stirring now and then, until rice is creamy and just tender (about 18 minutes). If the mixture dries out during cooking, add a little more stock or water—it should be wet enough to fall from the spoon.

While rice is cooking, make Herb Oil by puréeing herbs with oil and salt, adding a little water if needed to thin to a pouring consistency.

Keeping flowers fresh Cutting flower stems and pruning the leaves before putting them into a vase, watering them every few days, and keeping them away from direct sunlight, heat, drafts and fruits, all ensure they’re fresher longer.

Nick Drewe, trends specialist at UK’s WeThrift says raiding the cupboards may be just as beneficial to your blooms. Check these out:

Vodka

Sprite

Copper

The fridge

Simply add a few drops of vodka to your vase, and it will help to preserve the flowers by inhibiting ethylene production. Alcohol is also an antibacterial agent, which further makes the spirit a rejuvenating drink for your flowers.

Sprite (and other soft drinks) makes the water in your vase more acidic, enabling it to travel up the stem more quickly. And the sugar acts as flower food. Add ¼ cup (60ml) of Sprite into your vase. It also makes them smell sweeter.

Apple cider vinegar & sugar

Dropping a small piece of copper into the middle of a vase works wonders because copper is a fungicide and naturally kills bacteria growth in your flowers. After a couple of days, the blooms with the copper will open up nicely.

The cool temperature of your fridge will slow down the ageing process of your flowers, delaying the time they take to wilt and die. Try putting your bouquet in the fridge every night before bed, typically for a duration of eight hours.

Adding two tablespoons each of apple cider vinegar and sugar to your flower vase is just as effective as adding store-bought flower food. The vinegar acts as an antibacterial agent while the sugar acts as additional flower food.

Igniting young imaginations Books and reading are two of the great pleasures of life. There are few better places for youngsters to experience the joy that books bring than the new dedicated children’s bookshop Telling Tales: Scorpio Children’s Books, located in the BNZ Centre.

T

he space is bright, sunny, colourful and welcoming and, of course, filled with thousands of books to ignite children’s imaginations. “We try to display as much as possible at a child’s eye level,” explains manager Rebecca Jones. “We want children to feel that the place is comfortable and safe and made especially for them. After all,

encouraging reading and sharing the joy of storytelling is what we are all about.” Telling Tales is aimed for young readers under 14 and showcases the best of children’s publishing. There are board books for toddlers, early readers for those starting school and graphic novels for youngsters who read through pictures. There is a large classic section with books

of myths and legends and of fairy tales and poetry. Non-fiction features too, by both New Zealand and overseas writers. “We wanted to set up a treasure trove for the children of Christchurch,” says Rebecca. “A cosy place to explore and discover, to immerse themselves in tall tales and adventures and in everything that books and reading have to offer.”

Rescuing problem homes What started as a sticky front door ended up being a major rebuild for one Heathcote Valley house, in what is an all-toocommon post-quake story.

T

he aftermath and pain caused by the traumatic events of 2011 are still being dealt with as builders continue to uncover substandard EQC repairs. Jim Stenberg, director, of Jim The Builder says this is now a reasonable part of their business. The owners of the 1900s Marsden St house (pictured), purchased through the government’s On-sold Programme, came in for shock after shock as the true extent of the required repair work unfolded. The sticky front door soon ballooned into a major project involving demolishing the garage and sleepout, re-piling the whole house and replacing the entire roof. “We found that the retaining wall on the property boundary had moved and caused the garage to rotate on to the neighbouring property,” says Andrew. Fortunately for these owners and many others Andrew and the team from Jim The Builder have rescued, the stress is taken away - with all of the EQC and building consent processes taken care of. Go straight to the repair experts, call Andrew Clark on 027 203 9379 and for details on new build and other services visit the website. www.jimthebuilder.co.nz

Achieving the right balance when working with patterns and prints is vital for an eye-catching end result. Many people who love patterns struggle to find that balance, yet there are some simple rules that can help. Try these:

There are no rules. Patterns can all be different yet work well together to form a lovely abstract. Look for a similarity in them such as the same colour somewhere in each. Exercise restraint and use plains along with patterns. For instance a colourful artwork might work better on a plain wall, a single colour cushion on a patterned bedspread, and brightly coloured patterned towels in a white-tiled bathroom. Decorating a room often starts with a rug and these are terrific for adding pattern and vibrancy, and pulling a room together. Bigger is better. Choose fabrics before paint colours. It’s easier to find a paint colour that works with your fabric than the other way around. Pick your curtains, and bedspreads first if it’s a bedroom, wallpapers first in living rooms etc.

Electric Avenue wallpaper, Miss Lolo

Once you have found your main fabric, look for others that will combine and complement it. Think about the room’s soft furnishings: cushions, upholstery, window seats, headboard, valances and so on. Use three or five colours in your scheme and balance these within your patterns and plains. Start with a neutral baseline – cream, black or brown – then play around with other hues to add contrast. Look for one patterned fabric that ties all the colours together.

Stripe Living

P

reviously seen as the pique of modernity, many are coming to realise that cool greys aren’t always particularly comforting hues – especially when used in large quantities. Earthy clay browns, especially those with rosy undertones, have been having a major moment in areas of the home where people like to relax, such as bedrooms, living rooms and dining rooms. With any neutral based colour scheme, the key is to build balance and interest through contrast. There are plenty of different approaches for doing this, but if the concept is new to you, start with picking a midrange tone. Most colours fall into this category, so the only guideline is to pick one that’s neither too light nor too dark. Find a Resene swatch that appeals to you, and look to the colours located in the middle three rows. Then, you’ll want to identify a lighter hue and a darker one than your first colour to add highlights and low lights to your design

Rather than painting the walls one colour and the floor another, this living room has been given a ‘tideline’ treatment. You can get the look by first painting two coats of your lighter hue on the upper portion of the wall. To conserve paint you don’t need to take the colour all the way to the floor – but be sure that you ‘feather’ the bottom edge of your Resene paint by laying off the roller when you reach the bottom third of your wall, and lightly roll over the bottom edge a few times to blend and soften it. Then, using measuring tape, a level and a pencil, mark a faint line at a uniform height across all the walls of your space. Next, apply wide, high quality painter’s masking tape along the top of your pencil line before adding the first coat of your second colour to the lower section of your wall. Allow the first coat to dry before applying the second, and then allow the second to dry to the touch before removing your masking.

After two decades of grey reigning supreme as the preferred neutral for most, warmer tones are finally beginning to make a comeback. Styling Vanessa Nouwens | Photography Wendy Fenwick

Looking for a wintry interior update? Swap white walls for dark moody hues for the perfect cosy transformation.

G

oing to the dark side can feel intimidating, but dark schemes are a great backdrop for furniture and art and can create a warm, inviting space. Dark shades add

drama and grandeur to a home, and heading into the colder months is the perfect time to give them a go. If you are not sure where to start, here are a few tips.

From nature When you first think of dark interior design, perhaps you go to very harsh colors like black and charcoal, or deep navy blue. Moodier interiors aren’t all about those striking cooler tones. For a softer feel, look to the warmer side of the colour wheel, and experiment with hues that have a more natural, earthy feel. Deep greens and browns are a great place to start.

Check undertones

Create contrast

If you want to experiment with black paint, be sure to pay attention to the shades you pick and look very carefully at the undertones. A lot of black paints have a blue undertone which is great if you don’t mind a slightly cooler colour, but for a warmer, softer look, try and source blacks that have a brown undertone.

With dark colours, it is important to create contrast as well as a sense of balance. A mix of materials is essential, so choose different textures in your fabrics and surfaces. Some items will pop against a dark background, so go for a mixture of light and bold colours in furniture and accessories to bring it all together.

Go matte Dark hues and matte finishes are a dream team. Opting for matte paint softens the overall look, making moodier hues feel less harsh and cosier. It also is the perfect finish for all surfaces so you can blend features together to achieve a seamless, velvety look.

Look up Ceilings have long been ignored when it comes to colour and pattern, often left in a white or beige, so as not to stand out or clash. However, the fifth wall can add dimension and depth to a room, whether that’s with paint or wallpaper. Painting the ceiling the same colour as the walls is a great way to make a smaller space feel bigger, as it is hard to tell where the walls stop and the ceiling begins. Metropol 3 March, 2022 63

The completed portfolio of projects, together with the enthusiastic testimonials of happy customers says it all. Illustrating its versatility, the company is simultaneously working with a client from design stage, creating a 1000 square

Under construction at their base at Rangiora, the pods are 35 square metres, fully insulated with living and sleeping quarters. Clad in cedar and Coloursteel, the team are doing all the structural steel and all of the fitout to a high level of detail. METROPOL’S MOTORING WRITER

Ever since I can remember, I have always been utterly fascinated with all things automotive. My mother loved to tell others that her two-year-old son would sit at the bus stop and call out the make of just about every car which went past.

D

Ben Selby

uring my school years, I developed a keen interest in English and the written word. I then decided to fashion a career writing and talking about cars, something I started at the age of 17 with an article in the school newsletter about a classic Ferrari. Cars have always been a big part of my life. Being given the opportunity as a motoring writer to drive new and classic cars, write stories, present videos and just generally prattle on about my favourite subject for a variety of national platforms in print and online over the last 13 years has been a dream come true. My relationship with Metropol

started back in 2010. I was told, while studying Media Comms at Aoraki Polytechnic, that a vacancy had opened up, at a successful and well-known Canterbury lifestyle magazine, for a motoring writer. Through the years there have been many changes to the local print world, yet Metropol has flourished and today, our partnership is still strong. I certainly hope you will enjoy all the latest reviews, news, features and other yarns regarding anything with an engine in this and upcoming issues of Metropol. Stay safe out there.

EVs emit 80 percent less CO2 than an equivalent petrol vehicle when being driven in New Zealand because electricity generated here is typically at least 80 percent renewable (mostly from hydro, geothermal and wind).

Lower lifecycle emissions Battery EVs emit 60 percent fewer climate-changing emissions over their full life cycle than petrol vehicles, even when you take into account raw material extraction, battery manufacture, vehicle manufacture and shipping.

No more petrol station visits Charging at home is the most convenient way to keep your vehicle ready to go. For longer trips, there are public chargers at least every 75km on most of the state highway network. You’re almost never too far from your next charge, and the charging network is growing all the time, with a focus on covering major routes and increasing the numbers available.

Cheap to run Charging at home off-peak is like buying petrol at around 40c/ litre, depending on your electricity retailer. And battery EV motors have so few moving parts there is less to maintain or go wrong.

A zippy, quiet ride With no gears to work through, an EV can apply full power as soon as you touch the accelerator – and there’s no engine noise. They’re great hill climbers and regenerative braking means they recharge going downhill.

Plug into any power point Charge your EV inside or outside, in any weather, so long as all equipment is designed for use in New Zealand and for the conditions in which it will be used. www.rightcar.govt.nz

WORDS BEN SELBY

WITH HIP-HUGGING COMFORT The Hyundai i30 N caused quite a stir when it hit our shores a few years back. Here was a Korean hot hatch with more personality and fun than many of its German rivals. In short, it was a hoot, and for 2022, Hyundai claim things are even better.

T

here are two variants of the i30 N available, the hatch and the fastback in either manual and DCT dual clutch automatic. he test car that my wife Azariah and I took for a run was the entry point manual hatch at $58,990. You have to fork out $7000 extra if you want the DCT hatch at $65,990. The fastback sits at $62,990 for the manual and $69,990 for the auto. The new i30 N gets V-shaped LED daytime running lights, black forged 19-inch alloys and sporty red highlights fore and aft. Grunt comes courtesy of a 2L turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine. The Series II gets an extra 4kW and 17Nm to make 206kW and 392Nm of torque respectively. Inside, the N Alcantara and leather sports seats provide hip-hugging comfort. The interior lacks a certain zing found in other hot hatches, but it is still a nice place to be. The 10.25-inch infotainment screen is a doddle to use and the i30 N gets a full suite of safety kit including a reversing camera, rear-cross traffic alert, lane follow assist and blind spot monitoring.

T

The sweet sound of a crackling turbo four pot makes itself known the moment you give it stick. Once the boost builds to around 3500rpm, then you can throw rapid acceleration into the mix. In fact, when you work the gearbox in N mode and keep it in that sweet spot between 4000 and 6000rpm, the i30 N is a properly fast car. Each shift up and down feels positive and rewarding, and having the i30 N match your revs while downshifting in N mode can let others think you can heel and toe like Haydon Paddon. With perfectly weighted steering, you know exactly what those front wheels are doing. In the corners it darts with carefree exuberance from bend to bend. The only trade-off is the ride comfort can take a tumble and, thanks to a set of grippy Pirelli P-Zero rubber, there is a bit of tyre roar which can be a nuisance on longer trips. Such drawbacks are minor when you look at the bigger picture. The i30 N is a hot hatch tour de force and these little 2022 tweaks have made it only more desirable.

Cast your mind back to the first Honda CR-V. It was some time ago, wasn’t it? Fast forward to today and the warrior is still battling on in the medium SUV segment which is figuratively bursting at the seams.

T

he latest CR-V is still a strong seller, especially when you consider the entry level Touring featured here. Despite being the base model and kicking off the range at $41,000 plus ORC, the Touring 2WD doesn’t feel like a cut price product. Inside, the switchgear feels well put together and features like the 7-inch infotainment system are easy to operate. The driving position leaves you looking down on the LCD instruments ahead of you rather than directly ahead, but visibility is good all around. Oh, and the boot is a most capacious one.

Honda’s Sensing Safety Suite is also on hand along with a blind spot camera which displays the image of your blind spot on the infotainment screen when signalling a left turn. Another feature standard for 2022 is a power tailgate. On the move, I was pleasantly surprised at just how well the CR-V Touring shifts. That 1.5L VTEC four at 50km/h sits comfortably at 1200rpm and ride comfort is refined and supple. CVT auto boxes can be ponderous at times but the CR-V’s manages quite well. All in all, there is plenty to like here.

ELECTRIC FOILING POWERBOATS After 16 months of development, the world’s most anticipated electric boat recently completed its maiden flight, up on foils.

T

he foiling Candela C-8 features a unique combination of long all-electric range, high speed, and industry-firsts. Its maiden flight took off from outside the Swedish tech company’s headquarters at Lidingö, Stockholm. After reaching its designed take-off speed of 16 knots, the prototype P-01 lifted off smoothly, and flew noiselessly above the water at a cruise speed of 20 knots. “Smooth, and very, very silent,” said Gustav Hasselskog, Candela’s CEO afterwards. The C-8 has been designed to be the best electric boat on the market, and to provide emission-free boating. The transition to zero-emission boats has been hampered by the inadequate performance of conventional electric boats. Propelling a planing, conventional

speedboat through the water requires enormous amounts of energy, which drains even the biggest lithium-ion batteries after only 30-45 minutes of spirited driving. Flying above the waves on computercontrolled hydrofoils – underwater wings – Candela’s craft use 80 percent less energy than conventional boats, which translates into far longer range and higher speeds on pure battery power. What makes hydrofoils so effective is the dramatic reduction in drag. A typical planing hull has a 4-to-1 lift-to-drag ratio, while the Candela C-8 has a 20-to-1 lift advantage. Cruising at 20 knots, the C-8 can fly for 50 nautical miles on its 44 kWh battery – 2-3 times longer than conventional electric speedboats with 300 percent bigger batteries.

Other features include actively stabilised hydrofoils that leave no trace; pollution, noise, or wake. The C-8’s digital flight control system automatically adjusts the foils to keep the boat level and steady, even in adverse weather conditions, and silent, thanks to Candela’s newly developed Candela C-POD direct-drive electric pod motor. In an industry-first for leisure boats, the C-8 is equipped with fly-by-wire steering and has autopilot features for more relaxed driving over long distances. When the driver lets go of the wheel, the boat will automatically steer the set compass course. The company has received more than 100 orders since launching the C-8 concept last year, despite it being being priced at around NZ$489,000.
