Patience is a virtue Heading into the annual festive ‘silly season’, life for many of us will be more hectic than usual, tempers will fray, and emotions will get the better of some of us. None of this is unusual, yet there are a few practices that can make life easier. Many of them are clichés. As a rule, I loathe clichés (terminology for over-used, hackneyed sayings), yet there are times when they fit the

bill perfectly. The silly season is one of those times, a few weeks when we remember that clichés originated to provide short, sharp advice in certain situations, including turmoil. Growing up, I was often told that ‘patience is a virtue’, and I’ve frequently found it helpful when queuing... in traﬃc, ticket lines, admittance to shows etc. Getting impatient, upset, loud, and berating others won’t change the situation, so suck it up. Wait patiently and your turn will come, without you raising your blood pressure several notches, or threatening to burst a blood vessel. When situations start to happen, take a deep breath, and think about how they can be resolved without hassle. Don’t get your knickers in a twist, don’t cry over spilt milk, and definitely don’t rush in where angels fear to tread. Road rage is a classic example. When others drivers cut you off, forget to indicate, flip you the bird, there’s no point boiling over about it. The only person stressing is likely to be you, and you don’t need that. Lead by example, such as making room on a footpath for people to pass, instead of spreading right across it. Take some advice from the biblical concept to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Lastly, remember that you get more bees with honey than with vinegar.

Wrap it up

Is the badly wrapped present under the tree immediately identiﬁable as yours? Have you never quite worked out how to wrap a present nicely?

Here are some quick steps to surprise your family and friends with your present wrapping skills. 1 Gather together your gifts, wrapping paper,

scissors, and tape, on a clear flat surface, such as a table. 2 Secure delicate items inside boxes to

prevent breakage. Add bubble wrap and/or tissue paper to ensure they won’t shift. 3 Unroll the wrapping paper. Position the box

or present in the middle of the paper, upside down, so that the paper seams end up on the package’s bottom. Bring the paper up one side and over the top, extending it to the opposite edge. Estimate the additional paper needed to cover the remaining side, and then cut it. Aim for smooth, even cuts. If the edge is uneven, fold it under to create a seamless look. 4 Attach the paper to the box using tape.

Centre the box on the paper. Lift one side of the paper halfway across the top, securing it to the box with tape.

5 Create a neater edge by folding the other

side. Fold over the last centimetre of paper to form a tight crease before bringing the second side over the first. Ensure it slightly overlaps the first side and aﬃx it with tape. 6 Fold the paper on each side of the present.

Begin at one end, folding the top flap on to the box’s side, creating two small wings. Press these against the box, then fold the remaining paper triangle against the box. Use clear tape to secure it in place. 7 Stand the box upright and repeat the folding

process on the other side. Place the box with the worked-on side facing down and repeat step 6 on the opposite end. Add any ribbon, gift tags, or decorative bows to your gift. For gift-wrap extra credit, you can learn how to make curling ribbon bows. Congratulations, you’ve just wrapped a present perfectly.

Spotlight on Daniel O’Donnell Irish singing legend Daniel O’Donnell talks to Metropol editor Lynda Papesch, ahead of his February visit to Christchurch.

n his first international tour since 2017, Daniel O’Donnell will take centre-stage on 27 February, at the Christchurch Town Hall. A regular on the touring circuit for more than 40 years, Daniel is known for his engaging stage presence, and for scoring a hit in the UK album charts every year since 1988; an unprecedented and unbroken 35-year span. The recipient of an Honorary MBE for services to the music industry and charity, he released his latest album How Lucky I Must Be, earlier in November, having already sold more than 10 million previous albums. Touring has been an important part of his life. “I love the opportunity to sing live, there’s nothing comparable to it, and also the opportunity to meet people. I think no matter what I would have done in life, to meet people would have been the most important thing, and this has given me the ultimate opportunity of meeting people.”

His fan demographic is usually “a more mature audience”, although as the years have passed, he has noticed a lot of younger people coming to his shows, especially in Ireland. “There may be three, or sometimes four generations at a show, from children to to people in their 80s.” His song choices have broadened during the past four decades, although Daniel still sings many of the songs he sang in the beginning. “I do a lot of different types of music, rock n’ roll, inspirational music, Irish ballads, and country music. “I absolutely love country music,” he says, admitting to also enjoying music by Ed Sheeran, Westlife, and Adele. As for his favourite songs, the line-up includes My Donegal Shore, I Want To Dance With You, I Need You, Down At The Lah De Dah, and Tipperary Girl. When not singing, he’s partial to a game of bridge (playing 3-4 times a week), and a round or two of golf.

From MAFS to masks

Former reality TV star and now successful entrepreneur, Samuel Levi shares insights into his life after Married At First Sight NZ (MAFS), the challenges he faced, and his beauty brand, LuxeSticks. Deputy editor Daniella Judge caught up with Samuel to get the scoop on his post-MAFS journey and what’s in store for the future.

Life after MAFS

Samuel reminisces about his time on MAFS, acknowledging that it felt like a lifetime ago. He describes it as an experience that toughened his skin, a quality he found crucial in the business world. He notes the public’s fascination with the show, even if opinions about it varied. He gives a resolute “No” when asked if he recommends participating in MAFS. He says it takes a hefty mental toll on its participants, noting that he still gets unkind messages. While he may not recommend love-based reality shows, Samuel still has enthusiasm for reality TV. He’s interested in participating in shows like Survivor, Big Brother, one of the dancing shows, or The Block, jokingly adding that a singing show might not be his forte.

Success in Melbourne

One of the most significant changes in Samuel’s life was six months after MAFS, when he moved to vibrant Melbourne. He credits that leap to his hard work and determination, emphasising that “nothing gets handed to you”. When asked about his life in Melbourne, he described it as “absolutely amazing” and shared his deep sense of belonging there. His success in both business and personal life in this metropolitan city solidifies his attachment to it and he says he can see himself being there for some time. Over the ditch, he has shifted away from general influencing and now focuses more on his business and brand. He still enjoys updating his followers on his personal experiences, like his recent hair transformation.

An editing maestro ANNA ROGERS Anna Rogers, recently made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to literature, chats to Metropol deputy editor Daniella Judge about her experiences in the New Zealand literary world.

n the world of literature, where words dance on the page and stories come alive, there exists a behind the scenes role, that of the editor. Anna Rogers, who has been editing for 45 years, has enhanced countless books, both fiction and non-fiction, crafted by some of New Zealand’s finest authors. Anna’s career began early in life, as her father, a journalist and then publisher, and her mother, instilled in her a love of reading and writing. This passion led her to study English at the University of Canterbury. Dedication and eye for detail soon earned her a reputation in the publishing industry, and she was entrusted with works from renowned authors such as Owen Marshall, and Dame Fiona Kidman. Her love for history has also found expression in editing many titles in this area. Her professional journey has taken her down diverse paths, such as sub-editing for the New Zealand Listener, and editing the book trade magazine Booksellers News for nine years. She also helped establish the New Zealand Association of Manuscript Assessors, as part of her commitment to aspiring writers. Anna’s literary skills extend beyond editing. She has written several books, including illustrated histories of the West Coast and Canterbury, and While You’re Away: New Zealand Nurses at War 1899–1948. “There is so much to be told,”

she explains. With Them Through Hell: New Zealand Medical Services in the First World War was shortlisted for the Ockham Book Awards in 2019. She has also taken her literary expertise to the airwaves, adapting several books for Radio New Zealand, writing book reviews, and for many years was on the board of Christchurch’s Writers’ Festival, WORD. For the Hagley Writers’ Institute, Anna has assessed end-ofyear portfolios and imparted wisdom through talks and workshops. She has also mentored budding writers and editors. For Anna, editing is not just a profession. With each manuscript she delves into, she uncovers new facets of history and culture, finding joy in unique challenges. “When editing you are working in the best interest of the writer, the publisher, and the reader,” she says, adding that she cherishes the relationships she has built with authors and publishing houses over the years. Anna’s advice to all involved, is to, “just keep working at it [writing]. It’s a discipline”. She encourages growing talents to join writing groups, attend literary festivals and above all, to read. All of these experiences can offer support and camaraderie. In the upcoming WORD Festival this month, Anna will be conducting a workshop titled Behind the Red Pen - How Editing Works, sharing her wisdom with aspiring writers and editors alike.

SUBLIME SCULPTURES BY DANIELLA JUDGE

hiselling stone and bronze, Debbie Templeton-Page’s sculptural journey has progressed for more than two decades. “I was always arty as a young person, but it was when I was searching for the meaning of life that I became a sculptor.” Her friend introduced her to a sculpting lesson, and the fascination was instant. Late into the evening, she still held a chisel in her hand. She found herself teaching those classes a few years later. After five years of sculpting, Debbie set off to the sculptors’ Mecca, Italy, where she enrolled in resident sculpting classes. Although the stone differed slightly from New Zealand stone, Debbie felt, in hindsight, that New Zealand was as good a place as any to hone her sculpting skills.

“I am pleased I went to Italy, but you don’t have to go overseas to pursue your passion; you can cultivate it in your homeland.” Debbie’s artistic medium repertoire spans metals, glass, stone, clay, bronze, and more. Among these, her favourite medium is stone, and she believes the larger, the better. People serve as Debbie’s greatest muse. She began by making realistic human form sculptures, but later found the joy in crafting abstract. These creations invite viewers to interpret the sculptures in their unique way and forge a personal connection. “The more you step back and allow the viewer to use their imagination, the more impactful the piece,” she says. Upon completing a piece, Debbie

experiences a fleeting joy. Quickly, she becomes critical of the work before her. It’s only with time and distance, many years later, that she can truly appreciate her creations. Her enthusiasm for public sculptures remains unwavering. Debbie’s favourite public sculpture, commissioned in 2008, is a bluestone piece titled ‘BRONZE’, situated at the top of Timaru’s main street, overlooking Caroline Bay. In her own words, “When you develop a passion for something, nothing can stop you.”

SCRATCH BUILDER GHOSTCAT BY DANIELLA JUDGE

Scratch building is the process of building a scale model “from scratch”, i.e. from raw materials, rather than building it from a commercial kit, or buying it pre-assembled.

ike Beer, a carpenter from Birmingham, discovered in the rubble of the Christchurch earthquakes, his place among the vibrant collective of urban artists. With a lack of scratch-builders in Canterbury, Mike found a niche he knew he could hack, and Ghostcat was born. Shadow Town, Ghostcat’s first exhibition, was a hit. The “worst toilet in New Zealand” miniature sold first to a wealthy couple in Merivale. Go figure. When reflecting on his exhibition, Ghostcat says, “The response from the public blew my mind and the most wonderful thing about it was creating the nostalgia that connected with so many people that came through the gallery.” Motivated by conversations he had at his first exhibition, Ghostcat is delving into Christchurch’s pre-quake history for two projects.

The first is an art trail titled Leave No Trace. Commissioned by Toi Ōtautahi, he is scratch-building parts of at least 12 vanished buildings; this could be a sign, a door, or a façade and installing them onto street poles at their original locations for everyone to find and enjoy, like a throw-back treasure hunt. Also, he is putting major hours into his Boosted NZ project, Ghosts on Every Corner. Ghostcat is making 10 tiny masterpieces that resemble Christchurch buildings destroyed in the 2011 earthquake. Among them, the Atami Bath House and Smith’s Bookshop (pictured). Each piece takes around two months to complete and are crafted with astonishing detail, apt lighting, and mini props. They make you want to shrink to the size of a Polly Pocket and explore. Ghostcat plans to show this exhibition late 2024 alongside the book of the same

name, penned by Dr Reuben Woods. The book will incorporate photographs of these scratch-builds in their original location, the process of building them, striking stories about the buildings from locals, and information about the history of the original building. Once this project is completed, Ghostcat and Reuben will hold a book launch with all the artworks created on exhibition. As Ghostcat, Mike is discovering that this project will represent a diverse range of Cantabrian voices and together tell a rich story. “While the new Christchurch city is being built up all around us, it is important not to forget the city we had, we loved and we lived in.” He’s still on the lookout for more stories, so if you have fascinating memories of lost buildings, get in touch via Instagram @ghostcat_mb.

Christchurch has a local art school with a gallery showcasing the creative work of students.

oyal student, Monica Yeazel, whose works are pictured above, talks about her experience at the student gallery that has been helping people unleash their inner artist for years. Monica, a retired pharmacist, wanted to flex the creative side of her brain. “[Being a pharmacist] is a very black and white, right or wrong profession, so I’m loving mixing up all the colours in ‘no-wrong-answers’ abstract paintings.” For over a year she has been taking classes at Art Metro, and expresses that her favourite medium to work with is acrylic painting. “I tried oils very briefly, but I think maybe I’m still too impatient to wait for oils to dry.” Monica’s biggest takeaway from Art Metro is that she

can create something beautiful even from a painting she initially considers trash, if she keeps painting. When it comes to finding her own art style, Monica says she has a journey ahead, “I haven’t really settled into one particular style of painting: I’m still discovering”. A Canterbury scientist hopes her newly-funded research will lead to better ways of managing endometriosis, a disease that affects more than 100,000 Kiwi women.

r Rachael Wood, from the University of Canterbury will receive $360,000 over three years in a Te Pūtea Rangahau a Marsden Fast-Start grant. Her project will investigate the invasive mechanics of endometriosis, an incurable disease that can cause debilitating pain, fatigue, and nausea, as well as reduced fertility. Dr Wood and her team have already found that endometriosis has similar invasive properties to hormone-driven cancers. With her Marsden Fund Fast-Start grant, she hopes to determine how endometriosis tissue modifies its environment to aid invasion. Dr Wood and her research team will measure the mechanical

f life gives you lemons, make lemon curd. A delicious way to use surplus lemons, it’s also great for using up egg yolks left over from making meringues and pavlovas. Here are a couple of options (see also a third method on the following page).

CHELSEA RECIPE – INGREDIENTS 2 eggs, plus 2 egg yolks 3/ cup (165g) caster sugar 4 1/ cup (80g) chilled unsalted butter 3

Zest and juice of 2 lemons

MICROWAVE LEMON CURD – INGREDIENTS 1 cup granulated sugar

METHOD – SERVES 10

3 eggs (yolks and whites)

Whisk whole eggs, yolks and caster sugar in a saucepan until smooth, then place pan over a low heat.

Add the butter, lemon zest and juice, and whisk continuously until thickened.

Strain through a sieve into a sterilised jar. Keeps, covered, in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

1 cup fresh lemon juice (about 4-5 lemons) Zest of 3 lemons 1/ cup unsalted butter, melted 2

METHOD 1

In a large microwave-safe bowl, whisk together the sugar and eggs until smooth and thoroughly combined. Whisk in lemon juice, lemon zest, and melted butter.

Cook in the microwave on full power for one minute intervals, stirring after each minute. This process will take about 3-5 minutes depending on the strength of your microwave. You will know the lemon curd is done cooking when it coats the back of a metal spoon.

Remove from the microwave, push through a fine, mesh sieve and pour into a sterile jar or container.

Once the curd has cooled to room temperature, cover it with a lid and store it in the refrigerator for about 2 weeks. The curd will thicken as it cools.

Topsy-turvy lemon meringue pie

This recipe is a cross between a lemon meringue pie and a pavlova; a scrumptious festive season treat.

INGREDIENTS – MERINGUE: 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar

2 Tsp white vinegar

1 Tbsp grated lemon zest

1/ Tsp pure vanilla extract 2

2/ cup fresh lemon juice 3

8 egg whites

8 egg yolks

1 cup granulated sugar

2 cups heavy cream

Preheat the oven to 135 deg C. Line a rectangular baking pan, and grease it thoroughly. Sprinkle the pan evenly with the flour.

In a large bowl, combine the vinegar, vanilla extract, and egg whites, and beat with an electric mixer until foamy. Slowly add the sugar, while continuing to beat the mixture until stiff peaks form.

Spoon the meringue on to the baking sheet, and delicately shape it into an even “crust” layer, bringing it up the sides of the baking sheet as well. Bake for 2 1/2 hours; turn off the oven and leave it in there for another 30 minutes. The dissipating heat will finish cooking the meringue. Remove from the oven and let cool.

In a large bowl, whip together 1 cup of the sugar, the lemon zest and juice, and egg yolks. Pour into a pot over medium heat and stir constantly until the mixture coats the back of a spoon, 5-7 minutes. Transfer to a bowl and cover with plastic wrap, pressing the wrap onto the surface of the curd; this will ensure it does not form a skin. Set aside to cool.

In another large bowl, whip the heavy cream with the remaining 1/4 cup sugar until stiff. Fold the cooled curd into the whipped cream. Layer the lemon mixture evenly over the cooled meringue. Cut into pieces and serve.

Making your own creamy chocolate truﬄes could not be easier. Add a bit of butter to make them extra creamy. METHOD INGREDIENTS 225g of 70% dark chocolate 2/ cup cream 3

1 Tbsp softened butter 1 Tsp pure vanilla essence

Warm the cream, and pour it over the chopped chocolate.

Let the cream and chocolate sit for a few minutes before stirring.

Stir until the chocolate is melted.

Refrigerate about 1-2 hours until the mixture is set.

Roll into balls coat with sprinkles, coconut, chopped nuts, or cocoa powder.

TIPS

Use milk chocolate for sweeter truﬄes or semi-sweet/dark chocolate for extra rich truﬄes. If using milk chocolate, reduce the cream to 1/2 cup as milk chocolate is much softer than dark chocolate.

As thoughts turn to Christmas, the age-old question of what to have for your festive dinner arises. Ham is always a popular choice, and with so many options for glazes it’s always a crowd pleaser.

egardless of your choice, a glaze will add colour, flavour, and succulence to your ham. The best glaze for a baked ham usually contains either maple syrup, brown sugar, or honey. The saltiness from the ham and the sweetness of the glaze complement each other.

BASIC SWEET GLAZE FOR A 4-5KG HAM 1/ cup pineapple juice 2 1/ cup water 2 1/ cup melted unsalted butter 2 3/ cup brown sugar 4 3/ cup maple syrup, honey, or apricot jam 4

2 Tbsp Dijon mustard 1/ Tsp ground cinnamon 2 1/ Tsp ground cloves 4

Mix together, and use to glaze ham several times during baking.

TIPS

Don’t cut the skin of the ham too deeply or the fat will come loose off the meat during baking. Adding port, sherry, and even bourbon instead of water are also options. Bake at 180 deg C. Bake until golden on top; usually allowing 45 minutes per kilogram. Re-glaze your ham several times throughout cooking. When golden on top, remove from oven and let the ham sit for 15 minutes before serving.

THE JOY OF DRIVING Do you like driving? Do you get a thrill, or a bit of a buzz, navigating through morning traffic or sauntering down SH1 on the way to the batch? Or do you see driving as a chore?

A CRACKER CAR

When Peugeot springs to mind, I can’t help but think of fun, urban kickarounds like the hot hatch icon 205 GTi and small but sprightly 106 GTi. Ben Selby reports.

he essence of these fun pugs seems to continue today thanks to the new Peugeot e-208 GT, a car which looks to the past but embraces the future. As you might have gathered by the name, the e208 GT is the fully electric variant of the 208 hatch. The e-208 GT is powered by a 50kWh battery pack producing 100kW and 260Nm of torque. Range is rated at around 383km and plugging into a DC fast charger will give you back 80% charge in around 30 minutes. Retailing at $67,990 +ORC, Armstrongs Peugeot are currently offering the e-208 GT with $11,000 off the list price before the government clean car discount of $7015 finishes by year’s end. Outside, the e-208 GT has a certain “joi de vivre” separating it from other urban EVs in this class. Its 3-claw LED headlights dominate the front and 3-claw rear taillight cluster housed on full-width black detailing dominates the rear. Throw in some 17-inch diamond cut alloys and a couple of “e” badges on the rear three quarter and you have one handsome hatch. Inside, Peugeot’s quirky design tentacles are everywhere, from the angular centre console to the small sports steering wheel which fits snugly in your mitts. Ahead of you

sits Peugeot’s 3D cockpit, with 3D instrument cluster (which is kind of cool), a 10-inch touch screen infotainment display and the seven piano key-like toggle switches adorning that aforementioned console. You have tech like Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto, 4x USB ports, sat nav, heated leatherette and alcantara seats, a 360-degree rear camera with parking sensors all around, two levels of regenerative braking, an optional panoramic roof and safety gear like Peugeot Drive Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring and Active Safety Brake. What’s great about the e-208 GT from the moment you get going, is just how eager it is to, well, get going. While it does taper off once you really start to move, the initial blast from the lights to the urban limit is pretty darn impressive. The e-208 GT can cruise all day long comfortably on SH1 should you want to, but its natural habitat is the urban jungle. Despite it weighing 400kg heavier than the petrol 208, it’s amazing to find just how agile it really is. Sure, you can’t really corner flat and there is a minimal amount of body roll, but Peugeot have still created a great blend of everyday comfort with playful exuberance. This pug’s abilities to make you smile while engaging in sprightly silent running make it a wee cracker.
