Editor's Note

EDITOR LYNDA PAPESCH

Welcome to 2024 After a month off, our team has sprung into action, revitalised and ready for whatever this year brings. Personally, I caught up with some family, some friends, and made some new acquaintances with a couple of weeks staycation locally, and a wee visit to Golden Bay, Nelson, and Blenheim. Wherever I ventured, I found people amazingly positive about

the year ahead, for individuals, businesses, and New Zealand as a whole. Sunny days and holidays often bring out the best in people, leading them to look more optimistically at what makes them happy, and at life in general. Their pragmatism often ripples out like a stone plopping into a pond to envelope others around them. Those ripples of enthusiasm can spread far and wide, across family life, business, and community. Many will have made New Year’s resolutions, although usually most of those fall by the wayside before the first month has ended. My wish for 2024 is that those who are already positive thinkers help others to walk a similar path. A strong link exists between positivity and health, and studies have also found that a hopeful attitude improves outcomes and life satisfaction across a wide spectrum of health and wellbeing conditions. I’m not advocating wearing rose-tinted glasses all the time, although that’s not necessarily a bad way to view the world. I’m suggesting being open to humour, enjoying weekends when you can, and surrounding yourself with positive people. Now is an excellent time to acknowledge the good things in your life, to be kind to yourself, and to do something good for others.

In recent years, Kaylee had opened for The Chicks, Brad Paisley, and Six60, before being selected as an opener for Ed Sheeran last year. “Opening for Ed Sheeran, playing stadiums, and getting to sit and have a wine and a laugh with him backstage are memories I will cherish forever.” She is now preparing for her New Zealand solo tour, Nights Like This, starting in February. Her Christchurch show is set for 6 April at the Christchurch Town Hall. Prepping for a nationwide tour is a mammoth task, especially as Kaylee is doing it without a team. “I have the best booking agent in New Zealand with Brent Eccles and his incredible team, and they do a lot of work behind the scenes with logistics. Bruce Ullrich The Man The Legacy With the launch of his captivating, historically rich, autobiography ‘My Arena’, Bruce Ullrich, OBE, relives some of our proudest moments, such as the 1974 Commonwealth Games. Metropol writer Natalia Macrides-Pantos reports.

O

ne lives a life of limited innings, so why not go for the six? When you’re Bruce Ullrich you simply roll up your sleeves and go for it. You play to win, to do the best you can. You play for a common goal, to progress and to bring others along with you. Life is a team sport for Bruce. Today, grandfather to five girls and a boy, plus honourary granddad to four “delightful” Chinese children, he’s a lover of each new chapter of experiences, not to mention playing doubles tennis every Wednesday for the past 40 years. Perhaps his longstanding love for team sports, like rugby and cricket, encapsulated his ability to have tackled extremely challenging projects, seeing them through to completion,

through insightful leadership, humble mentoring, in business, education, and in the greater international sports arenas. As a young boy, Bruce delivered groceries by bicycle to customers, quickly learning the value of a dollar, the responsibility, and merit of completing a job, and engaging with people. An excerpt from his book reads, “There were no adding machines then” when needing to tabulate client bills. “It certainly sharpened my maths.” A true to life ‘get on with it’ mentality proved intrinsic to Bruce’s life philosophy. Could this same boy, enthralled with his brother’s ‘Boy’s Own Annual’ on Antarctic expeditions, ever imagine Sir Edmund Hillary inviting him to take over as Chairman for the 1975 New Zealand Himalayan expedition? Probably not.

A hearty chuckle follows his straightforward answer; “It’s a matter of having an idea and going after it, and then bringing a great team along with you for the ride. I do feel that having strong role models is key to seeing possibility in action.” Bruce made New Zealanders believe holding the games in Christchurch, his home town, was possible. His book commemorates a wealth of personalities, including diplomats, members of the royal family, and chance meetings at a time where anything seemed possible, from chairing committees, trade negotiations with China, to speaking engagements, making for a colourful non-stop life abuzz with limitless opportunities through hard work and fervent ambition. The book, a story within stories, hints at magical moments combining what’s written in the stars, to the dogged determination to make something happen. “I tend to lead from behind,” laughs Bruce. “No matter the scoreboard, there is a certain player in the game of life that can look back after the match and say, win or lose, I enjoyed that.” Bruce is certainly one of those; a Christchurch Boys’ High “old boy” with a nostalgic edge, inherent wit, and effortless charm.

Bruce will join three other guest speakers, one of which being Dick Tayler, at the New Brighton Museum’s Wine and Cheese evening on January 28. The event celebrates the museum’s extensive and exciting display of 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games memorabilia.

Changing business laws

Last year’s change in government has resulted in several law changes affecting employers and employees, with more to come.

L

eading the changes last year was the decision to increase usage of 90-day trial periods. From 23 December 2023, all employers in New Zealand, no matter their size, can now use 90-day trial periods. Previously, they only applied to employers with fewer than 20 employees. The trial periods have been opened up to all employers to provide them with greater confidence when hiring new employees. A trial period must be agreed to by the employer and the employee in writing, and in good faith, before the employee starts work, as part of their employment agreement. The extension of 90-day trials will not affect other aspects of employment relations, such as the requirement to act in good faith, or worker protections regarding pay, conditions, leave, and health and safety. Employers hiring people on certain work visas will also need to consider any immigration requirements relating to the use of trial periods.

Q:

I am buying an existing business, how does the handover with the previous owner work?

A:

For a smooth change of ownership, key items which need attention include: 1. Staff: Liaise with the outgoing owner regarding which staff will be required by the new owner, who will need to provide new employment contracts. A Vendor deals with existing staff and pays any outstanding entitlements, etc. 2. EFTPOS: Arrange EFTPOS facilities with your Bank as early as possible to avoid handover complications. 3. FAIR PAY AGREEMENTS The Fair Pay Agreements (FPA) Act has been repealed, effective from 20 December 2023. Rights and obligations under other employment legislation still apply, and employers, unions, and employees are being encouraged to work together to agree suitable employment terms. Organisations currently holding any personal information collected for the purpose of the Fair Pay Agreement activities, including bargaining, must now dispose of it, in line with the privacy laws. Further changes are due in June when Government has indicated it will legislate several tax changes. The proposed changes include: • Increasing income tax thresholds • Increasing eligibility for the Independent Earner Tax Credit (IETC) • The FamilyBoost childcare tax credit • Increasing Working for Families tax credits • Mortgage interest deductibility reintroduced for rental properties • Higher CO2-emitting vehicles will no longer be subject to fees • Repeal of the foreign buyers tax.

ooking back at the end of 2023, the market was more stable, with some major banks lowering their longer-term interest rates, and the OCR going on hold. However, even as the buzz of Christmas and holiday spending increased, talk of the slowly growing economy means that we still are being cautious around the predictions of rate rises and drops ahead of us. Here at NZ Mortgages, our prediction still stands that the $750k to $1.2m range will grow and continue to be a source of a large amount of the action in the property market, with families looking to buy their next home the predominant source of buyers. The best advice for those in such situations, would be to seek advice from a trusted mortgage adviser, to ensure your financial future is secured before making the move – and knowing that securing a pre-approval is a key step when buying a home. My team and I are excited and ready to help homebuyers across Canterbury in the new year, whether you are buying your first home, your next home, building, or looking at investing in property. Whatever your goals are, we are here to help. Get in touch with us today.

our greatest ally in business is ‘knowing your numbers’ intimately. Good or bad, they’re your best friend. The closer you get to them, the more in control you are of your business, your outcomes, and your life. If you’re not managing cash flow, you may not be managing much for long. Cashflow (physical money that flows into and out of a business, over a period of time) is your most important financial number, dictating ability to pay bills, invest in growth, and weather unforeseen challenges. Having a positive cashflow (cash in is greater than cash out, over a timeframe) is the key to a successful business. Don’t mistake cashflow for profitability; they’re not the same. Profitable businesses will flounder if they run out of cash, leading to serious problems, such as missing payroll, defaulting on loans, being unable to pay suppliers, and losing customers. Cashflow management comes down to timing, planning, and taking action. Vital to that is forecasting your cash flow as far into the future as possible so you can plan and manage it accordingly. Think about how to increase and speed up cash in, increase sales, pricing, accounts receivable, and how to reduce or slow down cash outflows such as loans, expenses, and accounts payable. EBI Business Improvement Specialists are hosting a Business Builder Seminar, focusing on Knowing Your Numbers and Cashflow. This is a free event, on Wednesday 6 March at 5pm, open to all business owners. If you want to learn more, and connect with other business owners, register at the website below.

Holidays spent relaxing in a different location, or the same setting wishing for something new, often inspire thoughts of selling and buying.

our biggest asset, it’s naturally scary to put a home on the market and be in the best position to do so. Each element of the selling or buying process can create worry, especially tackling it on your own. Lin Ma and Jane Fennell, (pictured) of the Harcourts Grenadier Wigram office, are the people to have by your side. With their large team, they’re fostering connections between an immense database of buyers and sellers to create optimal outcomes for all. “We go in as a team,” Jane explains. Lin loves to do business, while Jane takes care of the communication as needed to build comfortable relationships. Together, it’s a flawless match. Read on for Lin and Jane’s advice on what to prepare for and how their team can combat these stressors, so you can fulfil your dream of a happy home.

Subject to sale: Putting an offer in that’s subject to sale, where your offer for a new home depends on the sale of your current home, is completely normal, and expected. It is easy to handle when you have the right team.

How can Harcourts help? Preparing your home to be market-ready, styling each room so you don’t have to, and extraordinary communication with the seller are just three benefits of their combined, expansive skill set. This speeds up the process, getting buyers and their offers in fast. Jane says, “It is difficult, but we can prepare your home to flow into a quick sale,” to reduce stress.

POWER PARTNERS Lin loves to do business, while Jane takes care of the communication as needed to build comfortable relationships. Together, it’s a flawless match.

Speed and price: History and experience show that the longer a property sits on the market, buyers worry something is wrong, sellers reach higher stress levels, and it’s less likely the house will achieve a premium price. Having the right team helping is crucial, assisting with selling options, and marketing to attract the right buyer, and best price. How can Harcourts help? With a database that spans

many local and international buyers, Lin and Jane can easily connect with potential buyers waiting for the right home. Often, a sale will only go through their database, making sales incredibly quick. Plus, the team is constantly observing the market to ensure the best price for each client. Automate to save

After putting your feet up and relaxing during the festive break, now is the time to plan your marketing for the year ahead.

Recent increased costs have reduced spending power for many businesses, prompting a need for cost-saving strategies.

P

lanning your marketing serves as a guiding compass for your business. By aligning your marketing efforts with your business goals, you can give your business much needed clarity for the year ahead. Being organised allows you to predict changes in the market, identify new opportunities and manoeuvre around any challenges you may face. As the economic climate is still unpredictable, this is where being proactive with your marketing is essential. I suggest that creating a 12-month marketing calendar is the best way to ensure clarity and direction for the year ahead. To simplify this, break it down into 3-month, 1-month and 1-week periods to establish what you’re going to do. Next, look at what your marketing efforts were last year. Where did you advertise? What worked? What didn’t work? This can help provide some guidance on what you need to do in the marketing space. To get started with a marketing calendar, define your business goals for the year, analyse your key competitors and market, define objectives for what you want to achieve with your marketing (this could be to increase sales, or to increase brand awareness), and create a strategy of how you will execute them. At Metros Marketing, we are confident that being proactive with your marketing is the key to success. Call me today to get your marketing on track.

dopting Accounts Payable (AP) best practices is crucial to finding ways to regain financial security. Leading the list of solutions is AP automation. For example, a recent study showed that automation can reduce invoice processing costs from $6.30 to just $1.45 per invoice, and can double invoice processing capacity. By comparison, manual AP procedures are known for their time-consuming nature and susceptibility to human errors. Total automation streamlines operations to deliver the utmost efficiency and transparency. Fully automating the invoice-to-pay process eliminates late payments, and enhances fraud detection capabilities within the AP team. Invoice matching and annual reporting can be quickly and effortlessly generated with automation, while real-time data access simplifies payment processes and supplier onboarding, thereby eliminating late payments. Adopting automation significantly minimises the likelihood of errors, and reduces labour costs. Cloud automation offers visibility from any location and device, facilitating remote work, and reducing office space and utility expenses. Automation successfully eradicates paper-based processes, eliminates associated expenses, and delivers substantial cost reductions. Call me on 027 828 5335 to discover more.

This is off the back of several factors including the change of government, a peak (and some falls) in mortgage rates, continued growth in employment, and soaring net migration,” Kelvin says, adding that affordability remains a major property market issue.

Animal encounters

Kaikōura’s natural offerings make it the famous spot it is. Between dolphins, seals, albatrosses, llama, and whale encounters, you’ll find the most exciting and heartwarming experiences all along the Kaikōura coastline.

Hiking

When you’re struck with bursts of energy, yet cannot commit to driving very far, there are more than enough hiking tracks north of the city. The Glentui waterfall and nature trail, a gorgeously fresh and inviting bush walk, or the Kaikōura peninsula walkway, where the seaspray keeps you cool and those stunning coastal views make you smile, are just two to try.

Get salty

Summer is the time to enjoy warm water, salty, voluminous hair, a beach picnic, or an evening overlooking the sunset. North Canterbury’s beaches are where you need to be, with your sunscreen of course.

Spencer Park Beach

Close to Christchurch, Spencer Park Beach is an ideal spot to take the whole family this holiday season. With plenty of picnic spots and barbecues available, this beach epitomises the ‘make a day of it’ vibe.

Woodend Beach

This beautiful strip of beach is a favourite for many Cantabrians, especially keen young boogie boarders. A word of warning though, it’s best avoided on a windy day when its openness leaves it exposed to strong, blustery winds.

Waikuku Beach

Further north, Waikuku Beach has a reputation for being a quiet, calm, and captivating spot on the seaside. It’s North Canterbury’s best-kept secret with everything you need to enjoy time with the family, and get back to nature.

Hybrid make-up products

New products are blurring the distinction between skincare and makeup.

G

one will be the days of burdensome foundations and concealers that contribute to troublesome pimples and excess oil production. Many makeup products now proudly feature skin care ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and vitamins. This means that as you apply your makeup, you are not just improving your appearance, but also providing your complexion with a nourishing, hydrating, and naturally radiant finish. What’s more, this contributes to ongoing improvements in your skin’s texture. The next time you are updating your makeup bag, take a moment to contemplate a skincare hybrid. While effectively concealing imperfections like dark spots or under-eye circles, these products simultaneously work to address and remedy these concerns.

Prioritising skin care, and therefore skin health, is now considered an integral part of our daily routines. The need to access trusted skincare and aesthetic providers has never been more important.

K

atie McIndoe, an Appearance Medicine Nurse and Registered Nurse, regularly updates herself on the latest research and treatments available in appearance medicine. Owner of the renowned and well-established Transform Clinic Merivale, Katie and her team are thrilled to offer the latest in micro-needling - Procell Therapies - also known as micro-channelling. Described as “an evolved version” of microneedling, Procell Therapies can achieve excellent results. “Lower needle depths provide a less invasive treatment and less downtime, while still stimulating collagen and cell renewal,” Katie explains. Stem cell derived growth factors and cytokines, contained in the Procell serum, support cell renewal and stimulate preexisting cells to function on a higher level, thereby restoring a radiant, healthy appearance. Procell Therapies treats fine lines, wrinkles, skin tightening, acne scarring, pigmentation and melasma issues, skin tone, surgical scars, rosacea, large pores, stretch marks, and hair loss. Contact Transform Clinic Merivale for more information on the skin rejuvenating Procell Therapies micro-channelling treatment.

Additionally, dietary supplements containing ingredients from animals and animal products also need to comply with the Animal Products Act 1999; and all dietary supplements are subject to the Biosecurity Act 1993 which protects our environment, plants, and animals from unwanted pests and diseases. The range and variety of supplements, and purported uses, available from retailers and online in New Zealand, continues to grow, and for many this adds confusion to whether or not they’re making the right choice. From collagen capsules to multivitamin gummies, bodybuilding powders to hangover cures, supplements should not be taken lightly.

Do your research

Pundits disagree regularly about all manner of supplements, such as various herbal concoctions, unusual potions, and holistic combinations. For example, one school of thought is that if you’re eating enough colourful vegetables and fruits, and a range of proteins, legumes, and grains, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep, you shouldn’t need multivitamins or supplements. Be aware too that an overdose of vitamins such as A, K, D, and E can prove toxic, and that some health and body conditions, such as sickness or a pregnancy may benefit from specific supplements.

34 January 25, 2024 Metropol

Research is one of the keys to deciding if supplements are for you or not. Medical professionals may sometimes suggest using them, and so too will well-intentioned friends and family. Personal reviews from real people are insightful and may help to steer you in a particular direction, otherwise look for tried and trusted brands which meet the regulations. Look at the science behind what you are about to put into or on to your body, and check how it has been tested and what scientific backing it has. Ingredients and quantities should be listed on the various products’ packaging.

Check the ingredients

Many factors apply to checking the ingredients of a supplement or multivitamin, such as looking at what consumable capsules are made of. Dosage also matters. A long list of vitamins and minerals might mean you are getting lots of nutrients, through one convenient product. Alternatively, you may be getting small dosages that aren’t enough to benefit your body. Synthetic additives, or excipients, which have no real benefits are added to many formulas to beef them up, prevent production faults, or dilute the active ingredients.

Store them properly

If you do make use of supplements, read the care requirements. Many recommend storing them in dark, dry, and cool places, avoiding rooms that hold moisture, and avoiding shelves within reach of young ones. Keep an eye on expiry dates too.

T

he exploration is not without its challenges. Concerns over interpreting smart watch data, and the resulting increase in workload, are key obstacles to seamless integration of this technology into healthcare. Ruhi’s study identified heart rate as a crucial parameter for effective data visualisation and anomaly detection. Leveraging data from Fitbit users over five months, a machine-learning-model was crafted to discern irregular heartbeats. The resultant prototype empowered healthcare providers to visualise long-term smart watch data, spot anomalies, and effectively communicate concerns to their patients. In the final phase, over half of the study’s healthcare providers rated the prototype positively for usability. Ruhi envisions wearables transforming healthcare from a reactive stance to a proactive and prescriptive model. Top of the range smart watches may monitor body temperature, identify sleep stages, measure blood oxygen levels, perform ECG readings, alert users to irregular heartbeat rhythms, and even employ crash detection via accelerometers in emergencies. They really could save your life, and at the very least improve it. The culmination of this study can be explored in the March 2023 edition of Future Internet: www.mdpi.com/journal/futureinternet

Can’t sleep?

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that can make it hard to fall asleep, to stay asleep, or can cause you to wake up early.

T

he condition can be short-term (acute), usually due to stress or a traumatic event, or can last a long time (chronic). It may also come and go. Acute insomnia lasts from one night to a few weeks. Insomnia is chronic when it happens at least three nights a week for three months or more. Good sleep habits can help prevent insomnia and promote sound sleep: Keep your bedtime and wake time consistent from day to day. Stay active — regular activity helps promote a good night’s sleep. Check your medications to see if they may contribute to insomnia. Avoid or limit naps. Stop or reduce caffeine and alcohol, and avoid nicotine. Before bedtime, avoid large meals and beverages. Make your bedroom comfortable for sleep and only use it for sleep. Create a relaxing bedtime ritual, such as taking a warm bath, reading, or listening to soft music. If insomnia hampers your ability to function during the day, consult your GP to find the root cause of your sleep issues, and explore potential treatments. Should your GP suspect a sleep disorder, they may recommend a referral to a sleep centre for comprehensive testing. Metropol January 25, 2024 39

For many individuals living with osteoarthritis, seasonal changes, particularly the onset of summer, can exacerbate joint pain, making everyday activities more challenging.

W

hile it’s a common belief that temperature fluctuations impact arthritis symptoms, emerging evidence suggests that changes in barometric pressure may play a more significant role in joint pain and swelling. Barometric pressure, also known as atmospheric pressure, is the force of the air surrounding us. Research has demonstrated that fluctuations in barometric pressure can affect pressure within the joints. One cadaver study revealed that low atmospheric pressure could throw the ball of the hip joint off track by more than one-third. Additionally, your joints house pressure receptors, and when a low-pressure system brings rain or higher humidity, arthritis symptoms are more likely to worsen. As summer unfolds, individuals with arthritis can take proactive steps to manage their symptoms and maintain an active lifestyle:

• Stay hydrated: Proper hydration helps reduce inflammation and supports overall joint health. Protect your joints: Use assistive devices or adaptive • •

techniques to minimise stress on your joints during daily activities. Dress appropriately: Wear loose, breathable clothing to stay comfortable in the heat.

• Plan activities wisely: Schedule outdoor activities •

during cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening. Consider natural supplementation to help with joint health. Talk to your GP or pharmacist.

What is osteoarthritis?

In New Zealand, osteoarthritis affects 10.6% of adults. European people are more likely to have (12.5%) osteoarthritis than Māori (7.1%), Pacific (4.8%) and Asian people (2.5%). Osteoarthritis is a condition characterised by the deterioration of cartilage, the cushion between the bones in our joints. When this cartilage wears down, joints become inflamed, leading to pain, swelling, and stiffness. Various factors contribute to an increased risk of developing arthritis, including: Genetic predisposition Age Gender Joint injuries Obesity

Globally, osteoarthritis is the third most rapidly rising disability, behind diabetes, and dementia.

Managing arthritis symptoms in summer heat

THE POWER OF

HO 2

The bountiful benefits of water are no secret. Here are some of our top tips to maximise water for your health this summer season.

DRINK Carry a suitable sized drink bottle wherever you go to stave off dehydration. With a wide range of water bottles on the market, you are bound to find one that suits you. For an extra boost, and to minimise the number of times you’ll need to urinate, add electrolyte sachets to your water. These are especially useful after drinking alcohol, or when doing long haul travel.

DIP All the rage is the cold plunge, which is believed to reduce inflammation, offer a rush of endorphins, regulate hormones, and help remedy aches and pains. Many people are DIYing chest freezers into plunge baths to get all the benefits of cold plunge, and hopping into that chilly water early in the morning. An alternative to sporting a bulky box in your garden would be to simply make it a habit to have an occasional cold shower, to lap up some of the benefits.

Crayfish W

hen it comes to crayfish, you can’t go wrong with a rich herb and garlic butter that enhances and preserves the natural deliciousness, while adding an extra layer. Smothered in the savoury flavour of garlic and herbs, paired with the succulent juiciness of crayfish meat, and a squeeze of tangy lemon, your tastebuds will be bursting. Preparation is key. Ensure you give your crays a light rinse in fresh water before preparing to cook. Using a sharp knife, run the blade down the middle of the length of the crayfish to reveal two halves. Remove the mustard-coloured liver, and you’re ready to create this simple beauty of a recipe. Cook at home, or take the portable barbecue to the beach for a picturesque kitchen view.

FISH EN

PAPILLOTE Fish cooked en papillote (which is French for ‘in paper’ and is pronounced ahn-pa-pee-yawt) means to bake fish inside a pouch made of folded parchment paper. Despite its fancy French name, this dish is one of the easiest methods to cook fish, sure to wow at any barbecue. METHOD INGREDIENTS

1

Mix the butter, shallot, lemon, dill, salt, and pepper, and store in an airtight container for later use.

2 Tbsp butter, softened

2

Heat the barbecue to 200 deg C.

1 shallot, finely chopped

3

On one side of parchment paper, layer fennel and shallot slices, then place the fish on top. Season with salt and pepper, add shallot butter, lemon slices, and fresh herbs. If using a butterflied fish, insert herbs into the cavities.

4

Drizzle with olive oil and a splash of white wine.

5

Fold the other half of the parchment over the ingredients, then fold and pinch along the edges to seal, creating a semi-circle with crimped edges.

2 Tbsp white wine

6

Barbecue for 15 to 20 minutes until cooked through.

Handful of mixed fresh herbs, such as tarragon, dill, and parsley

7

Carefully cut open the packet, avoiding escaping steam, and serve.

1/ Tsp finely ground lemon zest 2

1 Tsp finely chopped fresh dill Pinch of salt and pepper, to taste 1/ fennel bulb, cored and thinly sliced 2

Making Your Own Luck in the

Year of the Dragon A warm welcome to 2024. It’s the Year of the Dragon and I’m told by Chinese friends that this means an extremely auspicious year, likely to bring good fortune – so I’m hoping you enjoy any opportunities that come your way. I love the entry into a new year. There’s the excitement of what’s ahead, either real or imagined, forgiveness for everything that didn’t go well and there are also the beautiful learnings that emanated from the year that’s been. I’m always curious about what lies ahead and having a plan is one of the secrets that allows me to embrace that future. I’m not alone in planning, nor are my methods unique, but with a large dose of personal accountability and a great work ethic it’s highly likely that any goals or resolutions that are set do end up being achieved, if not surpassed. Whenever you speak to people, they will give you one of two responses to the prospect of New Year’s goals or resolutions.

statistics supporting this soon – that’s the truth. American studies (sorry, I couldn’t find any relating to New Zealand) provide the following: 38% of people have said that they were going to commit to New Year’s resolutions but of those a massive 92% didn’t follow through or faltered very early. That makes the percentage of those who actually set goals this way, and at this time, tiny. Here then is the second group of people who at this time on the calendar are knee-deep planning, writing, envisaging and committing to the year that they want to see for themselves. This can include goals around position or job progress, financial wellbeing and debt reduction, family and friend relationships, and connection, health and numerous other personal matters. It can be as lofty as some incredible endurance or sporting feat, or as simple as writing down what you’re grateful for and hoping for more life benefits because of this.

professional and family goals. I’ve done this for at least 25 years and I find the New Year is a perfect time to undertake such a plan. In fact what was once a pretty basic couple of sentences is now a beautifully written journal looking at all aspects of health, what I expect to do for myself, the business and the community, plus much much, more. I then read this daily, review it at least quarterly and celebrate the results annually. It’s been an incredible journey. It’s let me push boundaries, complete numerous bucket list adventures and grow into the human being I had always hoped to be. And all by sitting quietly in January thinking where the heck do I want to go? Einstein wrote, “Learn from yesterday, live for today and hope for tomorrow,” and this is a good time to do just that. So, resolutions or goals, a simple plan or an elaborate mission, it’s up to you – and if you decide to proceed in such a fashion, here’s to this year’s Dragon helping you on your way.

Peachy keen Interior decorators, fashion, footwear and accessory designers, and jewellers are embracing Pantone’s “Colour of the Year 2024”, known as Peach Fuzz.

D

escribed by the Pantone Colour Institute as a comforting hue ‘softly nestled between pink and orange’, the colour was chosen to express a yearning for community and cosiness during uncertain times. As a colour, it is complemented by neutral tones such as cream and straw, paired with numerous green hues, and pops against its colour wheel opposite, blue. Well-suited for use in children’s bedrooms, bathrooms and playrooms, Peach Fuzz is also evident in designs for contemporary kitchens, lounges, and master bedrooms.

Here are some suggestions: In a monochrome colour palette – Pair with other warm colours, such as buttery yellows, bright oranges, and soft pinks. In a vintage palette – Peach walls were popular in the 1980s, paired with mauve, teal, ochre, and seafoam green. In a vibrant colour palette – For a more dynamic look, juxtapose it against deep reds and bright blues.

DID YOU KNOW? Egg chairs were first developed in 1958 by the famed designer Arne Jacobsen for Hotel Radisson SAS, in Copenhagen. Image: Getty

Often, what keeps us from spending long amounts of time outside is comfort.

M

ost of us would prefer to be curled up on a couch instead of a hard deck chair. With a hanging egg chair, you can relax in comfort outside, while enjoying fresh air and a garden view. The allure of a hanging egg chair lies in its ergonomic design, a testament to the finesse of Scandinavian craftsmanship. The shape, coupled with wrap-around cushioning, transforms the chair into a sweet spot of relaxation. Notably, the appeal extends further with the availability of double hanging egg chairs, offering a space for basking in the sunlight in spacious solitude or with a partner, canine companion, or a feline friend right next to you. Numerous prominent outdoor furniture retailers proudly showcase an array of egg chairs, in Canterbury.

When making your selection, consideration of the materials used becomes paramount to ensure resilience against the caprices of weather. Synthetic rattan emerges as a top choice, blending durability with a chic aesthetic. Take time to consider the colour palette to harmonise your egg chair with existing outdoor furniture. Placement should not be overlooked. If your deck boasts ample space and a robust beam, an option is to suspend the chair, introducing a minimalist allure to the piece. For those seeking mobility, a stand-alone chair with a dedicated stand is a convenient choice. To safeguard your newfound haven, contemplate investing in an egg chair bag, ensuring the longevity of what will arguably become a cherished outdoor retreat. Metropol January 25, 2024 57

Recycle

pet food packaging Fighting the war on waste, the Petstock Group has joined forces with Royal Canin and TerraCycle, launching a recycling programme across New Zealand, for all brands of pet food packaging.

N

early two-thirds of Kiwi households own a dog or cat, meaning a significant stream of pet food materials contributing to New Zealand’s waste numbers. Pet food tins and cardboard packaging can go into household recycling bins, however New Zealand pet owners have had limited opportunities to recycle pet food soft plastic packaging, such as dog and cat kibble bags and wet food pouches, until recently. Now, the Petstock Group has store recycling collection points, that can be found at Petstock Ferrymead, and Petstock Northwood in Christchurch. Pet owners can return clean pet specific soft plastics to the stores, and

58 January 25, 2024 Metropol

deposit them in the Royal Canin Recycling Program boxes. Once the collection boxes are full, Petstock team members will ship them to TerraCycle, where the contents will be manually sorted into different waste streams and sent on to specialised processing facilities to be converted into recycled raw materials. These raw materials can then be used to produce new products, to close the loop of the recycling journey. The end products may include benches, pot plants, compost bins, playgrounds, dog agility equipment, and more.

Are ‘catios’ the answer?

New Zealand is a nation of cat lovers, but their impact on native birdlife cannot be ignored.

See the pet door experts Have always used Sharp Glass for the Cat Doors in different houses I have owned. Top quality workmanship every time Efficiency plus! Everyone I dealt with was experienced and I was kept up to date the whole way with the job as it progressed. I give this company 10/10 and I have never done that before. Professionals like these people are hard to find and it was a real pleasure to deal with them.

U

niversity of Canterbury master’s student Sarah Chamberlain says “We have one of the highest rates of cat ownership in the world.” One solution to stopping our beloved felines from pushing native bird species to extinction are catios. However, Sarah’s study found that respondents were not often inclined to pursue cat containment for various reasons. “Broadly speaking, in future I’d like to see a rethink on what it looks like to be a responsible cat owner. An important part of this is bringing people on the journey and changing attitudes. I don’t think it is just about putting rules and regulations in place at a council level, you have to change people’s beliefs and attitudes, educate them about the issue, and give them the tools and resources to make it easy to engage.” Would you consider installing a catio on your property to protect New Zealand wildlife?

plants PORCH

Spruce up a bland pergola or porch with these eye-catching plants, which are made to hang. Wisteria

Wisteria will add enchantment to your outdoor space. Choose a position in full sun and protected from strong winds. They are vigorous climbers, and the added support of the pergola to twist around is vital.

UPKEEP: Pruning is a must to keep your plant performing as desired. Some plants need specific styles and techniques of pruning, not wisteria. Pruning will train it and keep it in check.

Clematis

Pronounced “klem-a-tis” (from Klema, the Greek word for vine), clematis are members of the buttercup family. An easy-to-grow versatile climber, plant with roots but in a sunny spot. It will reward you with standout flowers in a range of colours and sizes.

UPKEEP: If you have an early spring flowering variety, prune it back after flowering. Autumn blooming varieties need to be pruned back in late winter by simply cutting off all top growth. Prune large flowered varieties to 20cm above the ground in late winter.

No matter where you live throughout New Zealand, and no matter what time of the year, with Lawn Life Series, you can have a beautiful, healthy, lush lawn growing at your property in a matter of hours with products that work.

Banksia

The Banksia Rose is a climbing rose that is part of the Rosaceae family. It is also known as the Lady Banks Rose or Banks’ Rose. The Banksia Rose originated in China and was named after the wife of a famous botanist. Its versatility and minimal maintenance make it a perfect fit for various garden styles, from romantic to rustic.

UPKEEP: Maintenance pruning can just consist of snapping off the spent flowers, pruning back any dead or dying wood or any unsightly leggy growth, to preserve the shape of the plant. You can sacrifice a little bit of older wood but keep as much as you can because that will give you a lot more blooms for next year, and help the plant keep a compact shape.

Star jasmine

The star jasmine, named after the shape of its small white flowers, grows moderately fast. If you train the leafy jasmine to climb around a suburban backyard pergola, you will not only enjoy welcome relief from the summer sun in the middle of the city but also enjoy the waft of jasmine’s delicious perfume from the small flowers that bloom from spring through summer.

UPKEEP: Star jasmine is easy to maintain. It has glossy dark green leaves and thin tendrils, which can be kept under control with regularly trimming.

Did you know?

Pandorea jasminoides

An evergreen climber, pandorea grows fast and will quickly cover a large area, climbing up to five metres. Its trumpet-shaped flowers vary from pale pink to white, with a dark pink throat, during summer flowering. Plant in well-drained soil, in sunny spots.

UPKEEP: Apply mulch annually to help suppress weeds, and fertiliser annually in spring before new growth starts. Prune in autumn to keep tidy and in shape. Pandorea is easily propagated, from spring through to summer, using nodal or internodal cuttings.

In the Victorian era, when flowers were assigned different meanings, the wisteria symbolised ‘overpassionate love or obsession’. This referred to the choking nature of the vines.

IDENTIFY GARDEN PESTS Find-A-Pest is an innovative app that allows Kiwis to identify and report invasive species, including plants, animals, and insects, empowering users to safeguard New Zealand’s environment.

U

nique to Aotearoa, the app creates a database of pest information that is used to support biosecurity knowledge and efforts across multiple organisations, including Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI), the Department of Conservation (DOC), regional councils, and primary industry groups. Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury Associate Professor and app advisor Steve Pawson says it can be used as an educational tool alongside its critical role in identifying pests across New Zealand. “The app uses artificial intelligence to help identify pests,

and provides the user with information on pests’ habitats, and distribution. We have a team of experts who confirm identifications and send feedback to users,” says Steve, adding that the app is a valuable resource for anyone interested in protecting our environment. “Individuals can help to detect pests early, which supports pest management efforts and minimises damage to the environment.” Recent updates to the app now provide offline capabilities, immediate identification, a simple reporting process and key information to educate users on the pests in New Zealand. basil

Basil is a culinary herb, with a variety of cultivars, used in cuisines worldwide. Easy to grow from seed or propagated stalks, it thrives in warm, moist conditions, thriving in gardens, raised beds, pots, and hanging baskets.

I

n Western cuisine, the generic term “basil” refers to the variety also known as sweet basil or Genovese basil, which is the most widely grown and used in New Zealand. Thai basil is another cultivar, as are lemon, and holy basil, each adding distinctly different tastes to recipes. Sweet basil is one of the most popular basils for culinary use, particularly for its use in pesto, and the traditional Genovese sauce used on pasta. Thai basil may sometimes be called anise, or licorice basil, referencing its anise and licorice-like scent and taste. Holy basil (India’s tulsi) has a spicy, peppery, clove-like taste, is widely used for culinary, medicinal, and religious purposes. Thai basil is native to Southeast Asia, popular for its slightly spicy taste. A pretty plant, it has small, narrow leaves, purple stems, and pink-purple flowers, and is widely used in Thai, Vietnamese, Lao, and Cambodian cuisines. Lemon basil, also known as Thai lemon basil, has undertones of lemon in scent and taste. Grown primarily in northeastern Africa and southern Asia, it is a popular herb used in Arabic, Indonesian, Filipino, Lao, Malay, Persian, and Thai dishes, including extensively in soups, stews, curries, and stir-fries.

Tips for growing Basil thrives in moist soil, so check moisture levels often and water deeply once the top 2-3cm becomes dry. Place plants where they will get at least six hours of direct sunlight a day. Use fertiliser sparingly. Once plants reach 10 – 15cm tall, pinch off the topmost branches to promote more side shoots and a taller plant overall. Propagate from stem cuttings in water. Pinch off flower clusters when they form to prevent plant from going to seed. Harvest once a week to develop side shoots, and a bushy plant. Towards the end of autumn, leave basil to flower and collect the seeds for the next season. Sow seed in doors in spring for a summer harvest.

Get out and enjoy

Economic ambition

I hope you have had a chance to relax and unwind over the summer break.

If you’ve been in the central city this past week, you will probably have been lucky enough to experience the vibrance of the World Buskers Festival.

T

he weather finally came good, and Chrissy and I enjoyed plenty of time on the water with the kids and grandkids, fishing and swimming, as well as spending some quality fun time over the hill in Akaroa. It was a great break after a busy year and I’m sure, like me, you will be feeling refreshed and ready to get back into things. While it can be a bit of a challenge to switch into work mode at the end of the holidays, I always think it’s good to have things to look forward to, so here are three events well worth making the effort to attend. Kite Day at New Brighton Beach is always fun and seems to get bigger every year. This year was no exception, and it was great to see the skies filled with colourful kites on Saturday 13 January. If you didn’t make it this year, plan ahead for next year. Mitre10 Sparks is back on Saturday 3 February, lighting up our city with a dazzling display of fireworks. It’s the 41st year this has been held in Hagley Park, and it is a real tradition for families and young people growing up in Christchurch. And don’t forget the fantastic, free, Summer Sundays live music series, which kicked off on 21 January at the Botanic Gardens. There’s always something happening in our city, and I’m looking forward to another busy year.

t’s one of the highly anticipated events on Ōtautahi’s summer calendar, and, since 19 January, the city has been buzzing with its gasps and laughs. Something we always consider when attracting events to Christchurch is variety. We’ve had the Foo Fighters in town and both the White Ferns and Blackcaps have taken on Pakistan at Hagley Oval. With the buskers wrapping up in a few days, there’s plenty more to come. An eclectic mix of 35 artists are taking to the stage for Electric Avenue music festival, the Blackcaps’ rivals Australia are heading to Hagley Oval for the final test of the cricket season, and the Warriors are coming to town. The Super Sprint Motorsport NZ Championships take to the track, bikes will fly downhill at Crankworx, and SailGP is back on Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour for the second year in a row. Even if you’re not attending any of these events, our community will reap the rewards of a bustling city and the economic impact, attracting approximately 40,000 visitors to Christchurch to attend the events, generating an estimated $14 million in visitor spend. Playing host to major events is an opportunity to make our city shine and showcase all we have on offer, paving the way for even more thrilling events to choose Ōtautahi in the years to come.

Business events

In my last column, we announced that our name was changing from Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce to Business Canterbury.

S

ince then, we have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from our members and business community about how our new name better reflects what we do and who we support. On behalf of Business Canterbury, thank you to the business owners, operators and leaders in our region – contributing to our economy, providing livelihoods for our people and supporting our communities. Thank you for keeping our economy ticking along. Looking ahead this year, we expect to see progress made on removing median wage visa requirements, improving the quality of regulation, and planning for significant infrastructure investment in Canterbury through the new roads of national significance programme and the $1.2b Regional Infrastructure Fund. We have engaged early with ministers, outlining Canterbury’s business expectations and look forward to hosting them in Christchurch in the new year. For further insights on what 2024 might bring, on 15 February we will again be hosting our annual ‘Back to Business’ event, one of our major networking opportunities this year. I encourage you to get in quickly if you would like to attend as our venue capacity is limited. You can find out more and book at our website businesscanterbury.co.nz.

Since opening in May 2022, Te Pae Christchurch has hosted almost 450 events, driving significant economic benefits to the city and wider region.

W

ith direct international flights almost back to pre-Covid levels, we’re attracting visitors from all around the world to our city for business events. In November, Te Pae Christchurch held the Asia Pacific Seed Congress, hosting 1100 people from the international seed industry for a five-day event. Delegates came from 45 countries, forging new relationships and facilitating lucrative seed deals. This is particularly beneficial for our regional seed industry which produce 65% of the world’s radish seeds and 40% of the world’s carrot seeds. The event was a huge success for the venue, attendees, and the local seed industry, placing the spotlight on our region as a world leader in seed technology. In a successful end to the year, Te Pae Christchurch was awarded the Skal International Sustainability Award in recognition of the important work we are doing in this space. We were also awarded ‘Medium Venue of the Year’ and ‘Rising Star of the Year’ (Marzena Orlecka) at the 2023 Entertainment Venues Association of New Zealand (EVANZ) Awards. These awards celebrate our capability, and place our city firmly in the national and international spotlight for hosting conferences. Looking ahead, we are optimistic about the future of business events in Christchurch, with several international multi-day conferences confirmed for Te Pae Christchurch, from the virtual-reality, agri-tech, aerospace, and earth science sectors.

onstruction is already well underway on the new Lexus dealership building, designed by Warren and Mahoney. The standalone retail outlet, due to open in the first quarter of 2024, will operate across two levels with 572sqm of showroom, customer lounges, offices, car parking, and include EV charging stations for customer and retail vehicles. Much of the power flowing through the EV chargers will come from 39 solar panels on the roof that will supply around 20,000 kWh per year of electricity to the Lexus showroom. Reflecting the Lexus focus on sustainability, the new Christchurch dealership has been designed, and built with the latest innovation in carbon emissions, waste minimisation, and energy efficiency. It uses thermal modelling to optimise glazing, shading elements, thermal mass, daylight levels, and passive ventilation to create ideal conditions with minimal energy input. The concrete mix utilises New Zealand manufactured cement, and achieves an embodied carbon rating of EC24,

or a 24% reduction in carbon footprint compared to the industry standard. Compliance with the New Zealand Construction and Demolition Waste Reporting Criteria has been achieved during construction, and 70% of construction waste from the site has been diverted from going to landfill. Wherever possible, preference has been given to materials and finishes with environmental quality certifications, such as Declare, Redlist Free, and Greentag. This includes 100% recycled, carbon neutral carpet, 95% of the building’s steel sourced from a Responsible Steel Maker, and 95% of all timber used in construction is either certified by a recognised forest certification scheme or from a reused source. Lexus of Christchurch General Manager Aaron Frazer says the brand has been represented in Christchurch since the early 1990s, first with a sales and service outlet at Ilam Toyota before moving into its own building on the corners of Tuam and Montreal Streets in 1994.

All ours now

The award-winning Te Papa Ōtākaro/Avon River Precinct is now under the exclusive stewardship of Christchurch City Council, with the transfer of its final feature – the North Frame pedestrian bridge – from the Crown to the city’s ownership.

S

tretching alongside the Avon River from Christchurch Hospital to Fitzgerald Avenue, the Avon River Precinct boasts an array of attractions, including the beloved Margaret Mahy Family Playground, City Promenade, Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial and the Avon Loop. Spanning around 48,000m2, New Zealand’s largest public realm transformation has seen over 500 trees, 45,000 plants and 34 artworks and installations added to the central city. Rau Paenga Director of Programme Delivery, Greg Wilson, says the $120 million public space has become a significant part of the city’s landscape. “Whether it’s the many sunny spots to sit for lunch, its versatility as an events space for occasions such as the Tirama Mai light festival, or its convenience as a route for Te Pae delegates to access shops and restaurants, the Avon River Precinct enhances the central city experience for both locals and visitors.” Mr Wilson says the North Frame pedestrian bridge has become a well-used connection for people on the northern side of the city to the Avon River Precinct since opening in 2021.

“While the transfer of the bridge to the Council marks the end of our work along the river, I look forward to seeing how the river corridor continues to evolve with future private developments. “The many people that have contributed to the creation of Te Papa Ōtākaro/Avon River Precinct should take immense pride in their work and in reaching this significant milestone today.” Christchurch City Council Interim Chief Executive Mary Richardson says this is an important milestone. “With the completion of the bridge, the last piece of Te Papa Ōtākaro Avon River Precinct has now been handed to the council. “Te Papa Ōtākaro Avon River Precinct makes our city a more vibrant and enjoyable place for people to spend time, and the bridge creates a connection locals and visitors can use when exploring our city. “We look forward to continuing in our role as kaitiakitanga (guardian) of this important place.”
