Experience the charm of The Village Palms

Discover Christchurch’s hidden gem, Metlifecare’s The Village Palms –a boutique village that brings a fresh, modern approach to retirement living.

Nestled within beautifully landscaped grounds and charming garden courtyards, The Village Palms offers a blend of modern elegance and comfort that feels more akin to a luxury hotel.

“Most people don’t realise we are a retirement village at first glance. Being a relatively young village in an area with a lot of older villages, we’re proud to offer something modern and distinctive,” says Village Manager, Nicki Brown. Home to a small community of retirees, The Village Palms is all about connection.

“We’re not a sprawling village with hundreds of residents. We’re a close-knit community where neighbours quickly become friends, and those friends soon feel like family. Everyone looks out for each other, which creates a real sense of safety and belonging – that’s what makes us so special.”

From delightful dining areas and engaging social spaces, to a luxurious lounge, hair salon, movie viewing area and wine bar, every detail has been designed for comfort and convenience. With a social calendar full of all the activities you’d expect, such as bowls, Mahjong, Bingo, Tai Chi, and Happy Hour, making new friends is easy, and you may even reconnect with some old ones too.

“Many of our residents grew up in the local area or went to school nearby, so coming back feels familiar, like coming home,” says Nicki.

This strong sense of community extends beyond the village gates. Residents are actively involved in the local community, with regular visits from schools, parent groups, and local performers, creating a lively atmosphere.

Thoughtfully designed one-bedroom apartments and open-plan studios are bright, airy, full of modern amenities and spacious living areas - perfect for entertaining or quiet relaxation. Plus, with a premium care home on site,

residents can rest easy knowing that additional support is available if their needs change (subject to availability). Conveniently located in the heart of Shirley, just 10 minutes from central Christchurch and a short stroll from The Palms shopping centre, The Village Palms has everything you need right on your doorstep. And with a bus stop just outside, getting around couldn’t be easier. Since becoming part of the Metlifecare family in 2022, The Village Palms has a new lease on life, backed by a passionate and dedicated team – many of whom have been here since the village first opened.

“I’m incredibly proud of the community we’ve built here,” Nicki says. “From our residents to our staff, everyone is treated like family. We’re not just a retirement village – we’re a home.”

Watching the evolving Christchurch cityscape is a joy, thanks to the ongoing repurposing of its numerous classic heritage buildings.

With its English, Irish, and Scottish heritage, it is no wonder that many Christchurch homes, churches, and office buildings reflect the Victorian and Edwardian grandeur of those countries. Many gracious old architectural builds are long gone, due to time and earthquakes, yet a surprising number live on.

Foresight and creative repurposing are to the fore, and often buildings with sound foundations and/or architectural significance are reinvented time after time.

One example is the Drifter in the central city. Located in Lichfield Street, this unique

hybrid hotel and hostel, was built in 1919, designed by William Henry Gummer, as the former Wellington Woollen Manufacturing Company Building. Previously it was also repurposed as a Livingspace studio hotel and halls of residence.

Another is the popular Church Pub on Worcester Street. Housed in a postquake, revived 1875 gothic building, once the home of the Trinity Congregational Church, it is testament to a three-year repurposing project.

Throughout the city, and surrounding suburbs, there are also other ongoing builds, both homes and commercial projects, that help retain the character and heritage of Christchurch. They may cost more, yet the end result is worth it.

Timeless Elegance

Tom Webster’s fascination with architecture started at a young age, and now he shares it with millions of others, fronting TVNZ’s Grand Designs New Zealand series.

Metropol Editor Lynda Papesch caught up with him to see what captures his imagination.

Home is where the heart is, so they say, and Tom’s heart is inextricably linked with architectural design.

He lives it, breathes it, and is surrounded by it, at home, at work, and even relaxing.

Known for his enthusiasm showcasing the grand designs of Kiwi homes to New Zealand viewers, Tom’s awareness of architecture started early. “My dad was an architect, now retired. As any child of architects will tell you, it’s a profession that often seeps into family life well beyond the working week,” he says.

Early memories include Saturday morning visits to his father’s office. “Those were the days of proper drawing boards, drafting

pens, blueprints, and ammonia tank copiers,” he recalls.

“The things that captured my imagination most, apart from the smell of ammonia, were the architectural models, full of tiny scale people, cars, trees. As a kid these might have seemed like toys to me, yet those models also represented the architect’s ability to shape and create worlds. To have a job where you can have a real and lasting effect on the built environment, the places we live, work, socialise, care for each other and enjoy ourselves, is a mighty privilege...to be used carefully!”

These days, Tom meets people all around New Zealand who are challenging architecture, geography, sustainability, technology, and even standard building practices to create

innovative, cutting edge homes. He has been presenting Grand Designs New Zealand since 2022, and also runs an Auckland-based architectural practice with his wife Anna, focusing on bespoke residential projects.

At heart he admits to not necessarily being a classicist or a modernist, instead referring to himself as a building enthusiast. “I’m fascinated with all eras of architectural design, although I do struggle somewhat with appreciating post-modernist architecture; give me time.”

Buildings, he says, as well as fulfilling pragmatic needs, are, at their best, brilliant representations of society, culture, philosophical values, artistic ideals. “If I had to pin a favourite area of architecture it would be adaptive re-use: the introduction of contemporary architecture and functionality within an historic building setting. This may seem difficult here in New Zealand compared with countries with longer histories of building, however preserving and recycling buildings of any age is important, not just from a sustainable perspective. We should draw from their architectural histories whilst looking to innovate and re-invent.”

insulation, the house is often cold, and that’s in its very temperate Auckland location, I can’t imagine a Canterbury winter in it,” Tom shudders. Don’t worry, team Webster plans to renovate and enhance its mid-century feel, and make it a touch warmer too. Getting back to other people’s home plans, Tom says that people often assume that there is a particular type of building that qualifies as a “Grand Designs” house. “The truth is, the programme exists to explore the depth and breadth of domestic architecture. The scale of a house is much less important to me than the ideas behind it; the more varied a collection of house stories that we can cover each season, the better.”

“The scale of a house is much less important to me than the ideas behind it.”

Home for Tom, Anna and their children is a 1962 mid-century classic. “Or at least it has ambitions of being a classic,” he laughs. “It’s a bit tired and painted a very sensible green colour at the moment, definitely not in its swinging-60s prime.”

The house is long and low, with big drafty single-glazed sliding doors. “It’s a modest Kiwi version of a Californian home. In fact, it would much better suit a Californian climate. Lacking proper

As such, homes of a more compact nature and of modular construction definitely have a place in the world of Grand Designs New Zealand, as long as they are unique and interesting, he says. “You might just see something of that nature on your TV screens very soon.”

Heading into the series ninth season, Tom was recently made a “Lexus Ambassador” when the marque signed on as sponsor of the Grand Designs series. Coincidentally, he is also a qualified car designer, so the connection fits him like a glove, he admits.

“I’m looking forward to bringing the next collection of amazing design projects to the screen, and also working with Lexus and its community activities such as the Lexus Design Award, which are currently underway.”

The electric Lexus RZ 450e, and other vehicles in the marque’s luxury lineup, will feature in the next series as Tom travels around the country to visit the Grand Designs projects, so tune in.

Sole sensation

“Choose a job you love and you will never work a day in your life,” are the words Kathryn Wilson’s mother offered as consistent reminders. Metropol Deputy Editor Nina Tucker catches up with the iconic luxury shoe designer about making that a reality.

Kathryn finds no greater joy than seeing people wear her shoes. Among such giddy moments are others, like when Beyoncé posted to Instagram a photo of Kathryn Wilson shoes for herself and daughter Blue Ivy. A 22-year-old Kathryn would have never believed such a thing to be true. “I started the brand out of a love for the product. It was never the dream to become a household name,” she remembers.

The first to bring a footwear show to the runway at New Zealand Fashion Week in 2010, catapulting her to become our “first lady of footwear”, Kathryn hasn’t strayed far from the catwalk since.

Now mostly philanthropic, such as her affiliation with Breast Cancer Cure, a charity that fundraises to support research thanks to the support of local designers, Kathryn still praises the impact fashion shows have for worthwhile causes, the industry, and her happiness. From scratch to stage, “I love being involved in every aspect. I find the process energising and exciting,” she says. It’s a celebration, Kathryn adds, “the music, models, garments, and styling all give our designs a personality and allow our customers to make joyful memories with our brand.” Hundreds of shoes are donated yearly, too, to in-need causes, as well as support to Ronald McDonald House. Kathryn is the mind behind some phenomenal campaigns in New Zealand’s fashion industry, including the life-sized shoe box pop-up shop in 2011. Humbly, she explains it’s a team effort each time. “I have learnt a lot of life lessons over the last 21 years in business. One of the most important learnings has been around the importance of surrounding yourself with optimistic, big thinkers who are inspiring and keen to come along on the challenging growth journey with you.” Captivating collaboration is always just around the corner within the Kathryn Wilson team. Each collection emerges from the brand promise and a desire to create something imaginative and confident. “I wanted to design playful, comfortable, limited-edition shoes that make the wearer feel confident and bring them joy.” There’s no doubt that Kathryn has achieved that, as thousands of local shoppers secure the latest KW shoes season after season or a new capsule collection. “I still feel just as excited and passionate about the growth of the brand but mostly about the customers who have supported and loved our designs for over 20 years,” she smiles. The aesthetic pivots each year as new ideas become animate, and trend direction influence the colour palette and silhouette selection. No matter the change, “we always bring our concept creations back to the brand values,” Kathryn explains. Inspiration springs across film, travel, movies, music, vintage references, and trend forecasts, before a collection is researched and meticulously crafted. Think visits to leather markets to select

trims and accessories, long days in the workroom producing the final sketch, all to become a gorgeous prototype for fitting approvals and sales samples. It needs to be perfect—revolutionary even—to live up to the standard Kathryn has built, and the skills she is passing down. “I get a lot of enjoyment fostering and encouraging our staff to work in their dream industry and chosen career.”

That process is relentlessly cyclical and it all comes down to the season. “Designing, planning, marketing campaigns, photo shoots, catwalk events, managing production and logistics, fittings, quality control,” Kathryn lists responsibilities without a moment to breathe. “Brand partnerships, charity alignment and projects, merchandising retail stores, selling wholesale collections, hosting in-store customer events, overseeing sustainability goals and targets.” It sounds tiring, yet the reality admirably mirrors the advice from her mother all that time ago.

“I started the brand out of a love for the product. It was never the

dream to become a household name.”

While the fashion industry continues its constant wrestle post-pandemic, Kathryn and her team harnessed the downtime. It was a case of analysing “all parts of the business that are working well or could do with improving,” she explains. Challenging herself and her passions in the business to be more and do more, Kathryn says “it’s important to be open to change and to take advice,” from the industry. With that fire in her ‘sole’, she’s prepared for the economic revival. There is always sacrifice in business, Kathryn tells me. “Life is busy and full,” and being a mother to two girls is a “privilege.” A family nanny keeps the household running, allowing Kathryn and her husband Liam to escape when their work requires.

“I love being a working mum and prioritise my work life when I’m in the office and equally prioritise my children and family when at home.”

In her 20s and 30s, building the brand she dreamed of was an expedition of commitment, risk, relentless energy, and determination. Add that to the list of life lessons, Kathryn says she gives a lot more to finding balance now, scheduling weekly downtime sessions “so that I make time for me, my family, and my friends.”

Think puzzles, home baking, and long beach walks –with no schedule at all. That’s life at the family bach in the Coromandel, where Kathryn, Liam and the children get away to on weekends. During the week, she squeezes in time at Pilates with her girlfriends, morning walks with the dog, and as much family time as one can fit.

Branching into accessories and brands to cater for new aesthetics, Kathryn is pulling at her creative strings to metamorphose her brand into a “full circle shopping experience”. With silk and cashmere garments, leather apparel and accessories, jewellery and fragrance, “watch this space,” she says.

is Kiwi can fly

It’s the night before the Paris Olympics men’s high jump final. Christchurch-based Hamish Kerr is about to become an Olympic champion, bringing home New Zealand’s first ever Olympic medal in the event. Metropol Deputy Editor Nina Tucker discovers how he did it.

IMAGE: Al Bello/Getty

Hamish watched Maddi Wesche win silver in shot put, before clocking up nine hours of sleep atop one of the infamous Olympic cardboard beds. That’s not the kind of evening routine you might expect from someone just hours away from facing the climax of their career.

As I watched the final from the edge of my couch in the early morning hours along with thousands of other Kiwis, we were treated to a nail-biter. Ahead of the qualifying round, Hamish knew he was the top-ranked athlete. A goal to medal, and with winning a possibility, he inched closer to those realities after qualifying first. Comfortably, it was on to the next.

“Before qualifying, I was very nervous and didn’t sleep much, but once I completed that, the pressure was off a bit,” Hamish recalls. With composure and a jump of 2.36m in the final, he outperformed reigning champions Gianmarco Tamberi and Mutaz Barshim, who famously shared gold in Tokyo 2021. It boiled down to a dramatic jump-off between Hamish and Shelby McEwen before the Kiwi flew to history with a winning jump of 2.34m.

I remember running around the living room, while Hamish ran laps around the Stade de France.

He says the win hasn’t sunk in yet, and he doesn’t expect it to for a while. “The moments which are the sweetest are the ones where I really had to fight to get a result or are the product of some hard work,” Hamish says. This was one of them.

He shares the gold with the network of support around him. “They do so much hard work in making me the best high jumper I can be, and they give me confidence that my goals are possible. Sometimes when you’re trying to achieve your dreams it can feel quite isolating so to have a team of people who also believe in that dream around you, it makes all the difference.”

Being surrounded by New Zealand fans in the stadium was a “game-changer,” he explains. “It makes me feel like I’m at home no matter how far away it is.” Hamish had to keep a cool mental state throughout the competition and buzzing crowds to become an Olympic champion. “Physical preparation takes months, however a loss in concentration can detract from that instantly."

In his sport, it’s about saving the best till last, “so to be able to hold it together for a couple of hours as the tension builds is mostly mental.”

fearlessness. A lover of sport his whole life for the time spent outdoors and with friends, Hamish’s heroes were Olympic athletes. Now one of them, he says “Anything is possible if you work hard and commit to turning up every day, and I hope that any kids out there realise that I’m super approachable if they want advice.”

Hamish pursued athletics, running and jumping specifically, after a school athletics day. He signed up for a club and developed a great friend group, which “became my motivation for turning up.” He was a hurdler, but he knew that high jump posed his biggest potential. It became his sole event at 18 years old, but university caused him to step back for a year and a half. “I missed it so much so I came back.” He completed a bachelor of AgriCommerce in 2017 and decided to try for the Olympics. “The rest is history,” he tells me.

“The moments which are the sweetest are the ones where I really had to fight to get a result or are the product of some hard work.”

When he cleared the bar, Hamish didn’t just make Olympic history, he received a hefty and hard-earned paycheck—over $80,000. The satisfaction of achieving a childhood dream surpasses the money, yet funding his girlfriend and coaches to travel with him makes an incredibly lonely job a lot less so.

Paris 2024 was “such a whirlwind of emotions,” he explains, so much so he never got the chance to taste one of the chocolate muffins that went viral online. A short stint exploring Europe followed the victory, before returning to home base with no regrets. “We [athletes] usually feel like there could always be more to achieve,” he says. “Since I’ve gotten home, I feel like every day is just amazing.”

Preparation is key. “We do all the hard work months before, then go out and enjoy the feeling of competing,” Hamish explains, on his training regime. That looks like two gym, jump, and track sessions each per week, with recovery sessions such as yoga, stretching, and ice baths as well. These sessions are bigger in the off-season, “You need to be fresh to compete well.”

That dedication didn’t shift in the lead-up to the Games. While fans and media kept a watchful eye on Hamish’s transition from longtime coach Terry Lomax to James Sandilands just eight months out, Hamish and his team, Terry in the background, had just one goal—becoming a winner. “This year was all about challenging myself to be as professional as possible, nailing my nutrition, planning, and recovery.” A disappointing result of 2.22m at last year’s World Championships landed him 19th and without a spot in the final despite a season’s best of 2.31m. It forced him to adjust. “In hindsight, this extreme low made me brutally honest with how I operate, and ultimately led to change which allowed the massive successes of this year,” Hamish explains.

Ready for the ultimate world stage, it was all the result of

Signing off for the season, Hamish shares that while competition opportunities are still popping up, it means more to him to reflect on the “craziness over the last few months.”

A bevy of new performers discovered through the nationwide talent search will join the talent packed cast of singers, dancers, and twenty-piece orchestra when they hit the big stage to perform in front of a massive live audience at Hagley Park and the Auckland Domain.

Organisers are promising a spectacular evening of world-class, home-grown entertainment with highlights including the lighting of the Mercury Christmas tree, the popular Coke Food Fest and an all-stars-on-stage lights and fireworks finale.

Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park will be held at Christchurch’s Hagley Park on Saturday 30 November and at the Auckland Domain on Saturday 14 December starting at 7.30pm.

Top results for mortgage brokerage

In an industry where success is driven by a deep commitment to clients and a passion for results, a Christchurch-based mortgage brokerage stands out among New Zealand’s best.

NZ Adviser announced its top business people for 2024, with NZ Mortgages celebrating after not one, not two, but three of its star advisers were recognised for their outstanding achievements. Angela Wanoa and Khushpreet Sidhu, whose tireless dedication and personalised service have landed them both a spot on this prestigious list – at 41 and 39 respectively, say it is “exciting” and “unexpected” to receive the award. Their ability to consistently deliver exceptional outcomes for clients has been truly impressive, and this recognition is a testament to their hard work.

“We don’t do it for the awards,” says Angela. “Helping our clients get into their first home, or their dream home, that’s the real reward of working in this business.”

Director and Senior Adviser Nathan Miglani achieved the remarkable feat of being named the No. 5 adviser

nationwide. On top of this, Nathan has held the title of No. 1 adviser in the South Island for an incredible six years running.

His unmatched expertise, leadership, and commitment to excellence have solidified his reputation as one of the best in the business. “I work hard every day to support my team, and make sure we can ensure our clients achieve their goals first, before our own achievements,” he says. “Many congratulations to the other winners on the list.”

This success reflects the values NZ Mortgages hold dear: putting its clients first, fostering strong relationships, and continually striving for excellence.

“We hope to continue helping clients achieve their financial goals for years to come,” adds Nathan.

If you’re serious about a mortgage, call them on 0800 100 300, or visit the website.

Marketing is the backbone of business strategy

Business strategy defines a company’s overall vision, objectives, and competitive advantage. It also answers big questions.

Questions such as: Why does our business exist? Where are we going? What value do we provide a customer over others? How do we create and keep customers?

At the same time, marketing strategy focuses on how to select the targeted group of customers a business aims to reach, while brand positioning defines how the company wants to be perceived by that group, highlighting its unique value compared to the competition.

Competitive advantage is at the centre of both; it’s the unique edge that lets a company deliver greater value to customers, whether through lower prices, superior products, or specialised services, leading to market share gains and profitability.

Yet, far too many businesses still treat marketing as an afterthought—just flashy adverts, catchy slogans, or social media posts. That’s a huge mistake. Marketing is more than a tool of communication, it’s the backbone of your business strategy. Without it, your strategy is like driving without a map—lost and directionless.

Only customers can deliver cash into a business. Your business is nothing without customers. Marketing is the only way to truly understand, attract, and keep those customers. It’s not about pushing products—it’s about creating real value, solving problems, and ensuring your brand stays relevant in an overcrowded, competitive market. How can you have a solid business strategy if you don’t know what your customers want? If you’re not continuously engaging with them, learning their needs, and delivering solutions, you’re just guessing. Guesswork in today’s market is a recipe for failure.

Marketing shapes your brand, guides your messaging, and drives growth. Without it, your business strategy is just a disconnected series of tactics that won’t deliver results. If you want to succeed, you need to make marketing the engine of your strategy. Build your business around your customers, not just your products. When marketing (understanding and delivering value to customers) leads the way, your business doesn’t just survive—it thrives. So does your bottom line.

Improving health, and reducing poverty

As the MP for Banks Peninsula and a former GP, I have always been deeply committed to healthcare that serves our whole community.

My journey into Parliament was driven by the desire to create policies that extend beyond individual instances of care; they aim to uplift entire populations.

I am excited about the ambitious health targets announced by Health Minister, Dr Shane Reti. These targets directly address the pressing healthcare needs that I hear about from my constituents daily.

Our Government’s plan sets clear targets to deliver faster cancer treatments, improve childhood vaccination rates, reduce emergency department wait times, and ensure quicker assessments and treatments for those who are ill.

This is not just about numbers; it’s about the lives these changes will impact.

Implementing effective health plans is one of the most crucial responsibilities we have.

I also serve on the Economic Development, Science and Innovation Select Committee, an area that complements health policy. By boosting our economy, we are directly enhancing our capacity to invest in the frontlines of healthcare.

Reducing poverty is fundamental to improving health outcomes, and I believe that a healthy population is crucial for a prosperous society.

It has been non-stop for our team over the last few weeks.

The Bright-line changes are still having a huge effect on the applications we are doing, with property investment having a real resurgence.

It really is the best time to get into investing, as property prices are still reasonably affordable, and as the changes made to minimum deposit required coming down to just 30% on existing properties, we have plenty of clients finding equity and purchasing across the country. The easiest way to find out if you could make this jump is to get in touch with our team today.

If you are refixing or know your loan is coming up for renewal soon, make sure you are getting the best deal in the market. Try and fix your loan as late as possible, as the OCR drop has triggered a ‘race to the bottom’ for the banks, and they are dropping their rates to try beat out their competitors. This means there is plenty of money to be saved by waiting until as late as possible to fix your loan. We also highly recommend you fix for short-term - as rates are predicted to continue dropping, and a better deal is likely to be available in 6 to 12 months’ time. For more personalised advice, speak to your adviser or any member of our team.

CoreLogic’s latest report has 27% of all properties sold last month being to First Home Buyers. We are still doing plenty of deals every day with clients wanting to start their property journey, and it is part of what makes our job so enjoyable. If you or someone you know is looking at purchasing their first home, please refer them to our team - a referral is the best complement we could receive.

For expert guidance, reach out to our team.

Why women must take charge

For women in New Zealand, retirement planning involves more than checking KiwiSaver balances or relying on superannuation. It’s about ensuring there’s enough saved and invested to not just get by, but thrive during retirement.

This also means having money set aside for emergencies, says financial advisor

Shiree Hembrow, of phwealth. For many women, taking an active role in these financial decisions is often overlooked, particularly if they’ve traditionally left this responsibility to their spouse or to no one at all, she says.

“I married at 42, having spent much of my life financially independent. Before marriage, I was in full control of my finances, and that hasn’t changed in the years since. My husband and I enjoy a shared financial partnership, where we are both involved in our financial decisions. This ensures we both understand our financial position and we’re both prepared for the future. This involvement gives me a sense of security, knowing I maintain control of my financial well-being, no matter what life brings.”

Shiree says that unfortunately, many women are not in this position. “In 2023, Te Ara Ahunga Ora Retirement Commission highlighted that women are more likely to retire with less savings than men. There is a 25% gender gap in average KiwiSaver balances.

“This is concerning, especially when coupled with the fact that women typically need to stretch their retirement savings further over a longer period of time; one of the reasons being they live longer, on average. If women do not actively engage in managing household finances, they risk being unprepared for the financial realities they may face later in life.”

The solution starts with education and action, says Shiree. “Whether married or single, women must make it a priority to understand their full financial position, including household spending, debts, assets, insurances, banking arrangements, legal documents, as well as retirement plans.

“They should participate in discussions about where and how money is being spent and saved. This doesn’t mean taking over but rather sharing the tasks, being informed and involved in the decision-making process.

Shiree’s advice is for women to set up a separate savings plan or ensure they’re regularly contributing to KiwiSaver, to provide additional security and independence. “It’s about actively having a say in shaping your own financial future.

“Empowerment through financial literacy is crucial. By educating themselves on budgeting, saving, investing, and retirement planning, women can ensure they aren’t solely dependent on someone else’s plans. Seeking advice from a financial planner can be a valuable step toward creating a personalised plan that addresses both short-term needs and long-term goals.

“Ultimately, women - married or single - who take charge of their financial futures stand a better chance of achieving the independence, security, and peace of mind that everyone deserves in retirement,” Shiree says.

It’s time to give this accessory the style kudos it deserves.

Frames are having fun as of late, there’s no doubt. Skinny sunglass styles, or micro shades, have emerged as the hottest trend, aligning with the office siren aesthetic. Yet, cat eye styles and the elongated Balenciaga-esque frames that wrap around the face have lingered, too.

Different frames suit different face shapes, yet life is too short, so wear what you love. Aim to balance out your face and consider colours that brighten you up.

Obsidian blacks and classic tortoiseshell colourways reign supreme, while muted or bright hues will still be found on many of the sunglasses you see around. See the facing page for inspiration in updating your sunglass selection ahead of summer.

In spring, it is time to focus on our skin which we have blasted a with heat pumps and freezing temperatures over the colder months. It is time to concentrate on having healthy, toned, and tightened luminous skin.

Several variables can make a person’s face look older, such as skin texture, tone, sun-damage, wrinkles, loss of volume, and sagging. The latter (sagging) happens because collagen, the structural support of the skin, diminishes over time.

In these busy times we live in, people want effective treatments, with little to no down time that are relatively pain free, so they can continue on with their daily activities.

EndyMed Intensif is a treatment that is ideal for stimulating collagen production to brighten skin, reduce hyperpigmentation, improve skin

texture, smooth wrinkles and treat acne scarring, says Dr Brigid Lee, of the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic.

“EndyMed uses the most advanced radiofrequency technology to deliver heat deep into the skin, using gold-plated needles to stimulate the production of new collagen.

“These unique tapered needles require less passes per treatment, and shorter treatment times, resulting in greater patient comfort.”

Book your glow-up treatment today, EndyMed Intensif is available exclusively at Skin Rejuvenation Clinic.

Restoring breast balance

Breast Cancer Awareness Month spotlights the lifestyle changes that come with mastectomy surgery and an utterly new feeling when getting dressed.

Restoring that feeling of balance in the body and easing the mind with support and knowledge is The Fitting Room. From immediate post-surgery options providing soft comfort and ease, to the six-week stage where daily bras slowly return to the rotation and it’s time to get fitted for a prosthesis and styles, meet every step with their team.

A core service, the specialists are highly trained, and experts in finding the ultimate fit and feel, giving comfort and support along the way. Registered with Te Whatu Ora, The Fitting Room can make claims for the subsidy on behalf of the customer, with a copy of the medical certificate and a signature.

This mission is what catapulted the early team into lingerie. “My sister in law had a mastectomy and found there weren’t many options in Christchurch for a one-stop shop for getting bras and prostheses together,” co-owner Deborah Lewthwaite says. It’s a mission they will never give up on, Deborah shares. Innovations in bras and prostheses, including lightweight prostheses, the team is constantly searching for the best options to stock their shelves, such as styles that can be worn against the skin. “We source the best of everything that we can, including comfortable, practical, and seasonal colours and designs.”

KEco-conscious choices are at the forefront of beauty, and one Dunedin company is crafting the highest quality vegan-friendly beauty products.

aren Haig, founder of Dear Heart Vegan Beauty, began making soap as a side hustle to her corporate role while living in Australia.

A move home, a desire to create, coupled with noticing a gap in the market for luxury vegan beauty brands led to Dear Heart. “I prioritise luxury ingredients in eco-friendly yet elegant packaging,” says Karen. “Customers are adept at reading labels and my formulations speak for themselves.”

Added to handmade soap are shampoo and conditioner bars which deliver the same result as salon-quality shampoo, minus the water and plastic. “One bar is equivalent to three bottles, so you’re achieving cleansed and shiny hair while helping the planet,” says Karen. Sensitive scalps are catered to with the Sensitive Soul shampoo and conditioner bars, which are gluten, fragrance, and coconut oil free, and contain the mildest ingredients Karen could source.

Ideal as gifts, each soap contains an embedded soap heart that gradually appears, plus an inspirational quote tucked into each box. The scents are divine, “Chai Latte is good enough to eat, and Turkish Delight is utterly feminine.” Use code Metropol in October to receive 20% off site-wide.

Gaining more from a workout

The latest findings published in the Journals of the American College of Cardiology reveal that women experience more significant health improvements from exercise than men, highlighting the critical importance of physical activity for women’s health. These improvements include a substantial reduction in the risk of early death, making regular exercise an essential component of a healthy lifestyle for women.

While women experience greater health benefits from exercise compared to men, the latest Ministry of Health findings reveal that less than half (43.7%) of women in New Zealand meet basic physical activity guidelines. This highlights the importance of emphasising the specific health advantages exercise offers women, including a reduced risk of early death. Promoting physical activity is, therefore, crucial for improving women’s health.

The main findings from recent research showed the following:

Exercise has long been celebrated as a natural remedy for a host of health issues, and recent research underscores its particularly profound benefits for women.

1. Reduced risk of early death: Women who engage in just 140 minutes of physical activity per week can lower their risk of early death by 18%. In contrast, men need more than double that amount—300 minutes per week—to achieve the same reduction.

2. Consistent benefits across exercise types: Women see greater reductions in the risk of early death from various types of exercise compared to men, regardless of the exercise’s intensity or duration.

3. Need for gender-based exercise guidelines: The study underscores the necessity for gender-specific guidelines in exercise recommendations to ensure everyone can achieve optimal health outcomes.

Numerous facilities throughout Christchurch are dedicated to helping women lead healthier lives through regular physical activity. Many gyms and fitness centres offer a wide range of programmes specifically designed to meet women’s needs, providing supportive and motivating environments, and let’s not forget that 55% of exercise professionals are female, according to ExerciseNZ.

Trouble sleeping?

When we get into bed, the most common reasons people find it difficult to nod off is that they’re either still wired, or they’re uncomfortable.

The first reason mentioned is more to do with an overactive sympathetic nervous system, of which we’ve covered in a previous article, so in this piece we are going to deal with where this discomfort comes from, says Dr Matthew Wild, of Connect Chiropractic.

“The more common pain we feel in bed is a chronic ache rather than acute pain. It could be in the shoulders and into the arms, could be in the lower back and into the legs, it could be a headache,” he explains. “That pain is neurological in nature. If the pain was more from damage or irritation like a disc issue, then commonly you can get relief from lying flat on your back on the bed.”

your body wants is for you to lie down, IT WANTS YOU TO MOVE,” he reiterates.

“After a big day of work or activity, we are often very sedentary in the evening, and then we go to bed. That can be quite a long period with very little movement. Hence there’s no wonder why our brain gives us discomfort to encourage us to make a change.”

“One of the most common reported ‘side effects’ of chiropractic care is improved sleep,” Dr Matthew Wild.

So why is it aching? “The ache is an alarm; it’s the brain letting you know that something needs to be addressed. What does it want you to do? IT WANTS YOU TO MOVE,” he says.

“In response to prolonged stress, a sedentary lifestyle, bad posture, and very physical work environments, our body tightens up by recruiting muscles, and stiffens up as our body orders our joints to ‘lockdown’. As you can imagine, if you are already tight and stiff, the last thing

Matthew says this is why chiropractic can play such an important role in reducing our discomfort in the evening. “When a chiropractor makes an ‘adjustment’ they are working to restore normal function and movement of the spine. There’s far less reason for the brain to give you an ache in bed at night if everything is moving and functioning the way it should.

“This is why one of the most common reported ‘side effects’ of chiropractic care is improved sleep. The other reason for improved sleep is chiropractic’s effect on nervous system regulation, as discussed in our July article.

“If you’re not sleeping well, having difficulty getting to sleep or are generally uncomfortable in the evening, a chiropractor’s office is a great place to start.”

years of 4 happy ears

Late September commemorated four years of restored conversations and happier lifestyles, as one cherished Canterbury hearing clinic celebrated its birthday.

Bellbird Hearing has risen to prosperous new heights in the short time since opening. The milestone is made better with nearly 200 five-star Google reviews, the most of any hearing clinic in Canterbury.

For the team of locals, it represents four years of compassion, communication, relationship building, and finding the best solutions and innovations for each client worked with. Most importantly, it’s four years of happy ears and better hearing.

Each element of the Bellbird Hearing experience has constructed a foundation of trust and satisfaction with each visit—from the specialist services to the ample off-street parking. As expected, they offer the works as an independently owned clinic. Think hearing aids, hearing aid repairs, hearing tests, wax removal, and tinnitus consultations. No problem is too small for a discussion with the team, and chances are you will walk out with the solution.

Bellbird Hearing client Colin echoed this sentiment, explaining how the personalised care allowed him to discover the best hearing technology to suit his lifestyle and personal needs.

“At 79, I lead a very active lifestyle and consistently use my hearing aids for over 12 hours each day. These devices give me the freedom to continue enjoying my activities. Whenever I’ve needed minor adjustments, the team at Bellbird Hearing has always been there for me with professional and diligent service,” Colin explains.

Not just fully qualified audiologists, the team can be a sounding board for all those who have questions. Audiologist Caroline Smales says the doors are always open for second opinions and discussions for clients who have hearing aids from another provider. It’s all about finding the best path to better hearing, she explains. “We also have fully qualified audiologists who can do work for ACC, Veterans’ Affairs, and Ministry of Health needs.”

Hearing loss is a frustrating, isolating journey. With tailored hearing care, there is no reason to go it alone. Call the team to book in an appointment at the Christchurch (240 Ilam Road) or Timaru (245 Otipua Road) clinics.

HERBY QUINOA AND HALLOUMI SALAD

Feeds: 4

Prep time: 15 minutes

INGREDIENTS

3/4 cup quinoa

1 1/2 cups water

1/2 head broccoli, finely chopped

1 cup frozen green peas, blanched in boiling water for 5 minutes then drained

2 cups chopped fresh herbs

1/2 cup pumpkin seeds, toasted

2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil

1/2 Tsp sea salt

1 Tbsp cooking oil

250 g (9 oz) halloumi, cut into bite-sized cubes

1 avocado, cut into chunks

HERB YOGHURT (DRESSING)

1 cup plain plant-based or dairy Greek yoghurt

1 cup chopped fresh herbs

Zest and juice of 1 lemon

2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil

2 garlic cloves, crushed

1/2 Tsp sea salt

METHOD

1. Add the quinoa and water to a pot. Bring the water to the boil and reduce to a simmer. Cook the quinoa uncovered for 7 minutes, then remove the pot from the heat.

2. For the herb yoghurt, process all the ingredients in a blender until you have a smooth, vibrant green sauce. (Alternatively you can use a stick blender.)

3. To a large bowl, add the cooked quinoa, broccoli, blanched peas, herbs, pumpkin seeds, olive oil and salt. Gently mix together.

4. Lastly, heat the cooking oil in a frypan and fry the halloumi cubes for 2–3 minutes on one side before flipping them over. Continue to cook for another 2–3 minutes until they are crispy and golden.

5. To serve, divide the quinoa between four bowls and top with the halloumi and avocado. Dollop the herb yoghurt on top.

This is best served straight away so the halloumi is gooey and soft. Leftovers will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. It is best to leave out the halloumi and avocado and add them fresh each time.

1. To find your home’s wealth area, stand at the formal front door of your house facing in, and locate the far left corner. Decorate it with items that activate wealth, such as a money tree, crystals, and images of water. Feng shui colours for the wealth corner are purple, blue, and green. Avoid broken or damaged objects, which can represent stagnation or decline in finances.

Speak Up: Sharing Wisdom Through Public Speaking

I’m well known for being deeply passionate about business leadership, values and vision, so much so that I’ve been asked to share my thoughts on these three elements at a conference in Australia and a presentation in Christchurch during the month of October.

Different venues, different audiences –one being women only – and no doubt different perceptions of exactly what’s needed to provide the value they’re looking for.

Never an easy prospect for anyone to prepare for and I’m certainly no exception.

Unlike others, I find the easiest part of the process is saying ‘yes’, given I made it a personal goal many years ago to always accept invitations like these if we had shared values.

But once I’ve done this, it’s the actual thinking, planning and practice that provides the biggest challenge and the odd sleepless night.

The term ‘Glossophobia’ (or ‘fear of public speaking’) is said to affect almost 75% of the population. In fact, it’s deemed to be more anxiety-inducing than heights, spiders and, dare I say it, our own mortality. I’m thankfully not in this group but pulling together enough material and personal experiences to share, inspire and engage is always demanding.

Reviewing and curating all the learnings (many of them originating from mistakes – some of them big!), the shared strategies and lessons over many decades (thanks to some of the best mentors in the world, such as Gilbert Enoka), books, conferences and lots of coal-face experiences is arduous.

It takes time to distil these learnings – or wisdoms, as I now think of them –into a powerful presentation aimed at engaging world-weary brains and I’m hoping to do something my very special husband, John McFadden, does so easily: I’m hoping to tell stories.

Kevin Roberts said, “creative leaders tell

stories around the campfire of shared values” and this genuine and simple statement goes a long way in allowing me to articulate my vision and my journey.

I also know business is won and life is enhanced by relationships and relationships are the culmination of generosity, respect, consideration, kindness and care. It’s about being uniquely human, yes, a leader but one with a big history, heart and personal story.

I’m hoping that my upcoming venture into these two spaces and the presentations I deliver at each, both of which create vulnerability whist requiring deep authenticity, will be wanted and valued by those attending.

We shall see.

GO LOCAL

Diverse, resilient, and incredibly innovative. Canterbury is filled with thousands of bright thinkers bringing solutions to the way we live and work.

The good news is you can find many of them at the Canterbury Home Show, offering their insight and experience for products and services soon to become lifesavers in your day-to-day. When it comes to your home, each investment needs to be worthwhile and considered. Connecting with the people behind each purchase gives you the knowledge you need to make the right decision, from locals you know you can trust.

According to StatsNZ, as of February 2023, Canterbury had 79,500 business locations or firms, and 328,000 employees. Punching above its weight, Canterbury remains a booming economic sector despite ongoing pressures and battles. With a highly skilled workforce in hundreds of industries, from construction and architecture to financial investments and interior additions, find everything you need in one space – Wolfbrook Arena.

An ecosystem of innovation, our locals continue to strive higher, creating businesses that offer solutions and products people love. By supporting these local businesses, the industry continues its crusade to becoming bigger and better, making our home the best it can be for all of us.

Thetouchgolden

Current building costs could have you resigned to compromises. You might be thinking the beautiful kitchen and bathroom you dreamed of are destined to remain a dream.

Happily, the Golden Homes team has solutions. “We have huge capability under our brand,” says local branch co-owner Dean McGuigan. “We have the advantage of suppliers who are experienced and large enough to carry a depth in their range of materials. This enables us to cater for upgrades without the common cost hikes.”

The new architectural design and build show home at Faringdon beautifully illustrates their approach. “It has incredible specifications and cleverly clean lines. It doesn’t have unnecessary complexity designed into it,” says Dean. “That way a good proportion of the budget can go into including special features that the homeowner can use and love every day. The features absolutely give it the wow factor.”

The Mal Corboy designed kitchen and scullery, together with the dining area, form the hub of the beautiful and functional home. “We’ve ensured the master bedroom and bathrooms are stunning to further increase the desirability of this cost-effective home,” says Dean, adding that it is open seven days 12-4pm with someone at the home to answer all your questions.”

Explore, be

A home show stands out. It’s not a detached online shopping experience, or an afternoon racing around the city looking at multiple stores in search of one product.

It’s more than tangible, it’s the ease of having everything you could dream of for your home and garden under one roof, plus all of the experts to guide you.

Consider it a neverending pool of inspiration. From appliances, home/cookware, and storage solutions to home furnishings and renovations, or building new altogether, everything is conveniently located in the same space. Move through the practical to the not-so-practical, yet equally as desirable, and discover ways to update your home and living.

The bonus of your imagination going wild, is that the cost to bring them to life is considerably cheaper when inside the show. You will find yourself surrounded by exclusive discounts and generous offers that wouldn’t normally be obtainable. Do right by your future financial self and utilise the show-only promotions.

Covering both interior and exterior, there are so many opportunities to seize. Gather the information from specialist stallholders, compare all the options and prices, and make decisions to suit your lifestyle.

be inspired

TOP TIPS

• If you find yourself overflowing with ideas and inspiration, utilise the sea of knowledge that surrounds you at the home show, and ask questions. As the saying goes, two heads are better than one, and a different perspective (or more) may open the door to new possibilities or usages for the particular product or service you seek.

• Maintain an open mind. The idea you dream of may not come to fruition, something better may pop up. Welcome these changes with open arms.

• Keep up the connections after you leave. Gather business cards and contact details to get in touch with contractors and suppliers for further projects, or to continue working on an idea. Streamlining the process, solidifying such relationships can bring opportunities and ease to future home updates.

• Attend the daily seminars. There is nothing more helpful than seeing a prospective purchase in action, to understand how it could integrate into your home, garden, or lifestyle.

• Bring pen and paper to moodboard ideas and inspiration in real time. This can assist in finding the ideal aesthetic, space, and purpose for what you want to create, and send you home satisfied.

• Refuel in between conversations with stallholders and brainstorming. Staying fresh is key, to ensure you make the most of the advice and products and services. Hydrate often, and nibble on delicious food from the café.

Latest trends on show

According to New Zealand Registered Master Builders, 2024 building trends highlight a commitment to sustainability, technology, flexibility and personalisation. With standard homes currently said to cost $3500 to $4000 average per square metre, and prestige one-off designed homes are typically $6000 or more, it is important to keep up with trends to ensure value for money and longevity.

Consider these:

Entertaining: Designing floorplans so the house is an entertainer’s dream, with open plan kitchen and dining areas featuring built-in bars, social eating areas, sliding doors, and folding windows inside. Outside, wrap around decks, built-in outdoor kitchens, fire pits, second floor decks, and even pop up pools are on the rise.

Personal retreat: More homes are starting to resemble retreats, a sanctuary for those who live there. Building materials include natural stone, timber and such that create a feeling of being surrounded by nature. Think home day spas, and places to relax and meditate.

Smart homes: Technology, especially apps, can now be used to completely personalise your home, with fridges suggesting recipes using what’s inside, and phones able to turn music, lights, and the oven on as you drive home, and tailored entertainment and security systems.

Modular homes: Demand is increasing for homes constructed off-site using prefabricated materials, then assembled on-site. Small (and tiny) homes are also in demand. Modular construction is often more cost-effective, there’s less waste, a high level of control, energy efficiency, less disruption to the site and surrounding land, and homes can be built in more types of terrain.

The right impact

First appearances count, and that is especially true with homes, and how they look.

Some additions, alterations and tweaks will add street appeal, value, and create better indoor/outdoor use, while others won’t.

If you want to transform your outdoor living spaces into seamless extensions of your home’s refined aesthetic, you need to talk to the team at Impact Outdoors.

Crafting exceptional quality and timeless design, its curated collection of outdoor furnishings and accessories turns any backyard, patio, or garden into a sophisticated, cohesive haven.

“Our mission is to make luxury outdoor living accessible to everyone, creating picturesque spaces without a hefty price tag,” says company spokesman Manoop Chandran.

“We will tailor your pergola to your unique vision.”

The company offers a carefully curated selection of pergolas that strike a balance between affordability, quality craftsmanship, and excellent design.

“You can choose from an array of finishes, colours, and accessories to customise your outdoor retreat exactly as you imagine it.”

Manoop says there are plenty of manufacturers on the market that offer outdoor shades and decks, however a major difference is that Impact Outdoors products are the pinnacle of quality.

“We also offer all the expertise of a true global player in terms of consulting, service, installation, and handling,” he adds.

“We are 100% locally owned and operated, with more than 800 plus completed, customised projects to our credit.”

Manoop and the Impact Outdoors team will be at the Canterbury Home Show, otherwise you can visit them at 7/3 Synergy Lane, Islington.

Office hours are Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, email info@impactoutdoors.co.nz, call 0800 888 570, or visit the website.

Not

IDogs on duty

just in police stations, canines are becoming more common in workplaces across New Zealand.

t’s true, dog-friendly offices are growing in popularity. Workplace habits have evolved, as offices have welcomed things such as morning or afternoon walks, standard practice for many during the pandemic. We can’t expect dogs to send emails or complete spreadsheets, yet we can expect a boost in joy and productivity at work thanks to their love and affection. Countless studies show that dogs in the workplace can achieve the following benefits:

Team culture: Research has found that with a dog present, group behaviour is more likely to be cooperative, friendly, and enthusiastic. It’s hard to yell or argue with a dog around; consider them a de-escalation solution without the expense.

Interaction: Similarly, dogs can become an ice-breaker for canine enthusiasts, encouraging those to communicate with and approach people or ideas they might be afraid of otherwise.

Stress-reducing: Cuddling or patting a dog releases the stress-reducing hormone oxytocin, minimising stressful working environments.

Pets make us pause: Whether it’s a 20-minute walk outside or five minutes of throwing a ball down the office hallway, dogs in the office encourage regular breaks. It might only be a nudge to your knee for a quick pat or an attempt to steal your lunch, yet these interruptions bring us away from increasing stress, allowing our bodies to regulate and regather.

Greater productivity: Naturally, an increase in breaks results in an increase in productivity. Upon returning to the task at hand, employees feel refreshed, and re-approach work with a positive mindset.

Petiquette in the workplace

If your office has an open-pet policy, it’s best to abide by any rules set up by your team. Keep up with office-dog-friendly habits, or use the below as a guide.

DO

• Check with your office first, determine if it is appropriate, and what day(s) work best. Always consider any potential allergies in your team.

• Scope out any hazards or dangers that could harm your dog within the office and surroundings.

• Ensure your dog is healthy and up-to-date with any vaccinations or identification requirements.

• Prepare or train your dog for the new environment and people.

• Set up an area near your workspace with their favourite bed or blanket, toys to avoid boredom, and a water bowl. Keep a treat stash handy.

• Set aside time for walk and toilet breaks. Work can get busy, and these breaks can be easily forgotten if not scheduled in.

• Appreciate calm, good behaviour with reward-based positive reinforcement.

• Be prepared to clean up after them, whatever that may be.

DON’T

• Bring your dog to work if they are sick or potentially infectious.

• Leave your dog unsupervised or in an anxiety-inducing environment.

• Wait to introduce your dog with other office dogs until you bring them in. Get them acquainted beforehand.

• Rely on exercise during work hours. Give your dog a run-around before you clock in, in case you don’t have time to do so during the day, and to avoid bad behaviour.

• Give your dog access to the kitchen or restricted areas–it could cost you a coworker’s lunch.

calm Keeping pets

Car travel, vet visits or being cooped up and home alone can stress our pets.

Pets are removed from familiar routines when owners head on holiday, and boarding kennels, catteries, or house sitters cause anxiety levels to soar.

Environmental scents can help anxious, stressedout pets feel happier. The Pet Remedy essential oil calming formulation contains an attractive scent that distracts pets from environmental stress. Pets can detect environmental scents at higher levels than humans, who might only notice a faint earthy aroma, while pets breathe in a heavenly scent of happiness, explains a company spokesperson.

Pet Remedy’s Natural Valerian-based calming formulation is suitable for dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, horses and all pets, helping them settle in cars and kennels. It also relieves separation anxiety or unease in multi-animal households.

The benefits

• Diffusers are great for cooped-up, stressed-out cats or dogs.

• Sprays provide fast-acting, local calming for all pets in cars, or on holiday

• Handy wipes are useful for vet visits, walks, and attaching to cages

• Bandanas can attach to dog collars and are sprayed with the calming scent.

Holistic homes

A home is more than just the physical bones of a house or the nature residing in a garden.

Rachael Farthing, owner of Studio Wren, Christchurch’s newest landscape design company, believes that a home is created as elements of architecture, interior and landscape come together. Each “reflects different parts of the owners, connecting together to create a functional place to live” – an holistic home.

With more than 10 years of experience in landscape design, Rachael has a strong passion for achieving just that. Seeing huge success so far, she has now brought her talents to Christchurch, launching her business this past June.

Studio Wren prides itself in being the brand that will take clients step by step through the whole process, making for a “less stressful and personalised experience that is fine tuned for their individual needs”.

Clients are given valuable advice throughout the process with great flexibility to do things in stages to save money or achieve your ideal timeline.

From elaborate planting plans to carefully thoughtout swimming pool design, you can have it all. Rachael explains that they “don’t have one set style,” instead taking inspiration from the house itself and the client’s vision, bringing it all together to create the client’s dream landscaping.“Not just a copy and pasted, generic product”. Choose Studio Wren to carry you through the landscape design process today, and create your holistic home.

Rewarding building excellence

A University of Canterbury civil engineering student Yu Li (pictured far right) won the “Next Gen Supreme Award” at the 2024 New Zealand Building People Awards.

Award winners

IMAGE:

More than 600 construction industry professionals gathered to celebrate the excellence of the people behind a variety of projects nationwide, and congratulate award recipients.

Yu Li received two awards for her study on collecting data about how and where roads are used, by using a newly developed and cost-effective Internet of Things (IoT) proptotype.

Her thesis study can be used to automatically predict traffic positioning in different scenarios, and can be used by engineers for improved planning. The unique IoT technology can used in various areas of construction data collection, such as smart buildings, construction safety monitoring, and house building.

Other Canterbury winners were:

• MATES IN CONSTRUCTION, Health, Safety and Wellbeing winners: Michaela Murray - HSSQ Manager, Cook Brothers Construction, Christchurch, for her RESET programme, inspired by Worksafe’s Taking 5 initiative, drawing on neuroscience principles in a dynamic, and engaging game show style programme. The programme makes safety training engaging and effective, catering to various learning styles and enhancing risk management in both high-pressure and relaxed scenarios.

• BCTF, Collaboration winners: Matt Eglen – Architect, Architectus, Tim Harman - Project Manager, Cook Brothers Construction, Josie Ogden Schroeder – CEO, The Kind Foundation, Milly Perkins - Client Project Manager, RCP, Lisa Renton - Quantity Surveyor, Rhodes and Associates, Glenn Whitney - Site Manager, Cook Brothers Construction for the Papa Hou project in Christchurch.

Judges say what distinguishes the Papa Hou project team is its exceptional engagement with the client and on-site team, ensuring everyone understood and committed to the project’s goals. This collaborative spirit was crucial in overcoming the challenges of a limited budget and the complexities of a multi-use building, including fire and acoustic coordination.

The Key To Outdoor Entertainment

• REVIZTO, Digital Technology, highly commended: Keri Niven, digital practice leader, New Zealand, Aurecon, Christchurch. Keri’s blend of technical expertise and collaborative leadership fosters growth and innovation within her teams and across the industry, judges say. “Her leadership truly shone during the East Coast Recovery Alliance project and was a testament to the positive impact ‘digital first’ can have on New Zealand’s construction sector.”

• XLAM, $10-$25 Million Project Award, highly commended: Gerry Van Graan, project manager, Dominion Constructors, Christchurch. Gerry showed outstanding leadership and technical expertise in the complex 66 Oxford Terrace project, say judges, stepping up when the original project manager left, and quickly building strong relationships with the team, consultants, and supply chain.

• CARTERS, $25-$50 Million Project Award, highly commended: Tim Harman, project manager/construction manager, Cook Brothers Construction, The Kind Foundation project, Christchurch. The judges citation says Tim provided exceptional leadership and dedication, expertly navigated a tight budget, managed persistent supply chain issues, and addressed technical complexities with design and build elements, ensuring the project’s success.

• BARNES BEAGLEY DOHERR, Over $50 Million Project Award, highly commended: Tom Pyatt, project manager, Naylor Love Canterbury, for the Ashburton Civic Centre and Library project. Judges says Tom’s leadership proved outstanding, his decisive action and problem-solving skills ensuring the project stayed on track. Tom also developed a robust timber protection methodology, safeguarding materials and demonstrating his commitment to excellence and innovation.

City set to boom

We get all four seasons in Christchurch and spring is in swing - another reason I love living here.

Iknow I’m not alone in that, there’s a lot going on for our city, it’s great to see.

The place is humming, with exciting developments and the talk from up north is not ‘where are we going for a holiday this Christmas?’ but ‘how can we move to Christchurch’.

I took a drive around the central city and was impressed with the amount of construction and projects recently completed, underway, or in the pipeline.

The Nike and Helly Hanson building in Cashel Mall looks great, and the under-construction JD Sports and Sweaty Betty building on High Street will be just as good.

We also have the Otago University Medical School on Oxford Terrace, and the third tower at Christchurch Hospital underway. Additionally, we’re making progress on the barrier sites with the recent demolition of the former Two Fat Indians building.

With the opening of The Church, The Loft Bar and the soon-to-be open Whiskey Fiddle, there’s a flourishing hospitality scene. With more than 300 apartments and townhouses being built in the East Frame, the central city is going to boom.

One New Zealand Stadium at Te Kaha and also the Parakiore Recreation and Sports Centre will be fantastic assets for our city, and with our world-class convention centre Te Pae Christchurch, we’re on the fast track to becoming New Zealand’s events capital.

On that note, I hope you had a chance to see the Illuminate Festival in the Botanic Gardens recently. It was a great success and looked spectacular. The trendiest little city in the Southern Hemisphere is only getting better.

Inspiring the next generation

One of the most exciting things about Innovate Ōtautahi was the number of young people in attendance.

We know young people are engaged in innovation and technology – channeling that interest into great careers is the next step.

We have organisations here in Christchurch helping to make this happen. One of our local tech champions is Elle Archer. As Executive Chair of Te Ao Matihiko, Elle helps support Māori engagement in digital and tech by providing a variety of learning and networking opportunities.

There’s a host of other local organisations that are connecting tech businesses to young and diverse talent. Canterbury Tech’s Mentor Programme is a standout initiative, offering Career Start and Mid-Career mentoring to support both newcomers and established professionals in the tech field. Meanwhile, Code Club Aotearoa plays a vital role by teaching coding and digital skills to children aged 7-13, fostering an early interest in technology and problem-solving.

In the aerospace industry, Aerospace New Zealand engages with students through the Aotearoa Aerospace Academy, while Women in Space Aotearoa New Zealand (WISANZ) supports women and gender minorities, providing mentorship and career guidance. These efforts are crucial in fostering a diverse and skilled aerospace workforce.

Christchurch is developing a world class tech and aerospace ecosystem. Arguably its greatest asset is the young people who will help it grow and prosper. Equally important are the businesses and individuals who share their time and knowledge to inspire and lead. If you want to know more or get involved visit christchurch.com/inspire.

Positioned to thrive

Canterbury businesses are showing renewed optimism about the economy, following our latest Business Canterbury survey, which opened in the days following the first interest rate cut in four-and-a-half years.

This rise in confidence is a welcome sign for the business community and our local economy. We’re seeing quite a large improvement in expectations for both the Canterbury economy and individual business performance, with 53% of businesses expecting a stronger Canterbury economy over the next year, up from 26% last quarter.

These results are early indications that the recent drops in inflation and interest rates are having a positive impact on the business operating environment, despite ongoing challenges. Many businesses have experienced what felt like an elastic band economy over the past few years, but signs are pointing toward recovery.

Our quarterly survey results are highly valued by decision-makers here in Canterbury, and in Wellington, as they reflect the evolving challenges and opportunities in our region. To explore these findings further, head to our website (www.businesscanterbury.co.nz).

Looking ahead, we’re excited to launch the return of one of our most anticipated events, the Prime Minister’s Lunch, where we will host Christopher Luxon on Friday, 8 November, at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand.

It’s a must-attend event, so be sure to register early on the Eventbrite website to secure your seats.

Business Canterbury will continue to work alongside key decision-makers and keep the region informed on local business developments, ensuring Canterbury remains strong, connected, and positioned to thrive.

Buzzing with talent

As a relative newcomer to Ōtautahi Christchurch, having lived here five years, I have quickly developed a deep appreciation for the city, and all it has to offer.

Iam continually amazed by the remarkable achievements of Christchurch businesses on the global stage. From companies developing cutting-edge medical implants for surgeons worldwide to virtual and augmented reality specialists revolutionising how businesses captivate audiences, our city is home to some incredible talent.

I recently experienced a pang of envy when my wife toured Auto Restorations, a standout Christchurch business specialising in classic car restorations. Their expertise is so exceptional that they have earned over 16 prestigious awards at the Concours d’Elegance, among numerous other accolades. It’s a prime example of world-leading work, happening right here in our city.

In the top 300 cities globally for our successful innovation ecosystem, it was fantastic to see Christchurch showcasing its thriving tech sector during Innovate Ōtautahi, held in September. This was a week of inspiration and connection for entrepreneurs, techies, aerospace changemakers, and digital disruptors. Te Pae Christchurch proudly hosted three leading innovation events which attracted thousands of tech enthusiasts, including the New Zealand Aerospace Summit, Canterbury Tech Summit, and the Innovation Expo.

I am privileged to witness transformative organisations who are shaping the future. At nearly every conference we host, there’s an exhibition component where organisations showcase their products. Seeing our local businesses shine in these environments fills me with immense pride. Convention centres like Te Pae Christchurch play a crucial role in connecting industry leaders with pioneering businesses, facilitating future advancements, and celebrating our homegrown talent.

Innovative Products

Look out for these exciting project options

New, updated, and improved home and commercial building products regularly come on to the market. This includes innovative ideas and technology that boost the build process from the ground up.

From site preparation and stability, to foundations, walls, ceilings and roofs, research has shown that Kiwis are among the first to embrace new technology, avant garde products, and ingenious creations. These pages feature some of what is available in Christchurch and the wider region.

Globally, the construction industry is undergoing rapid changes because of the adoption of innovative design approaches, technologies, and materials. New Zealand’s construction sector is learning from the best practices of other countries, as well as coming up with its own innovations.

A focus on sustainability means current key trends include the use of green and sustainable materials such as bio-based and recycled products, the development of self-healing materials, and the application of 3D printing for construction.

Stairways to heaven

Contemporary home and office design is often multi-level, necessitating a need for one or more stairways.

Current trends are towards curved and organic designs, such as the one pictured here, replacing traditional straight lines with fluidity and movement. They’re often works of art. Using helical, spiral, and free-form designs, curved stairs add a dynamic and sculptural element to a space.

In recent years, indoor and outdoor staircases have transcended their functional role, becoming architectural focal points that contribute significantly to the aesthetics of a space.

Inside especially, they’re no longer just a means of access between levels; they are statement pieces that reflect creativity, innovation, and contemporary trends.

Technology and materials both play an important role in the design and fabrication of stair design, the former enabling cutting-edge designs through digital templating and cladding.

Now you can envision it, digitally design it with a variety of materials and look, and see how the finished product will look. Better yet, create a 3D model.

Among the popular options are sleek, minimalist floating stairs that enhance a sense of openness, open riser stairs and glass railings that allow natural light to flow through the space, and sustainable stairs comprising materials such as repurposed wood, and bamboo.

Division Engineering and Wilford Walker combine forces to produce creative and elegant spaces in your home.

Customised stair panelling encapsulates solid timber stairs over three floors in this spacious home.

The panelling allows a sense of space and light as you travel through the area whilst adding an element of fun and mystery.

Slide again like new

Repair, not replace, is the philosophy Christchurch sliding door specialist Stewart Poole lives by.

Why replace something that can easily be fixed? he asks, and Stewart should know. With more than 30 years engineering experience, and 16 years specialising in fixing sliding doors, Stewart (pictured) has the right tools, the know-how, and the solutions to sort any troublesome sliders out.

The owner/operator of Sliding Door Specialists Ltd, Stewart (aka Mr Ranchslider™) says many of these can be repaired to as good or better than new for a fraction of the cost of replacing the door.

“We can make them work better than new,” he promises. “Doors of all ages can be repaired; a new door or a door from the 1970s.”

Repairs are fast and efficient with the company’s mobile service that can often have doors sliding better than new in less than two hours.

Sliding door problems are often caused by worn, broken, or damaged, wheels or rollers, tracks, and seals.

“All our staff are fully trained and have the skills that allow us to ensure we can guarantee the quality of our workmanship,” adds Stewart.

The life expectancy of the rollers and tracks is around 10-15 years, he says, and many homes built in the 1970s and 1980s have Ranchslider™ doors. “Today, we see many of the

same problems occurring with rollers, and track damage. If your sliding door is difficult to open and close, is making weird noises, has difficultly locking, or is just generally frustrating you, it sounds like it’s ready for a service or repair.”

Stewart says he often corrects repairs undertaken by handymen or inexperienced tradesmen. The right skills and parts make all the difference. “We have the correct wheels and rollers for your door.

“Also there are new wheel carriages with nylon or acetyl wheels available, and these improved carriages have two and sometimes even four rollers. The weight of a sliding door affects the function and ongoing reliability of door wheels. We will advise and fit the best option wheels to suit the weight of your door,” he says.

“We will ensure that wheels and rollers are correctly adjusted so the door is balanced and fits squarely in the frame; so it locks and unlocks easily and runs smoothly. We can also repair the door tracks by installing a new aluminium track, or a stainless steel cover track, designed to fit perfectly over the worn and damaged track.”

If your sliding door is driving you mad, let the team at Sliding Door Specialists provide a free inspection and quote.

Stadium track

Christchurch’s One NZ Stadium remains on budget and on track for an April 2026 opening.

Work started on the roof support structure in November last year, culminating with the first section of roof being installed in the south stand along Tuam Street in August 2024.

Twenty-eight of the 37m tall roof supports, known as radial trusses, have now been fabricated and welded together around the seating bowl. The remaining 12 radial trusses will be installed progressively until early 2025.

Progress on the seating bowl includes the installation of 1188 concrete seating plats, L-shaped structures that form the tiered shape of the stands.

Nine of 20 radial diaphragm modules (RDMs) have been installed so far. Due to their size, these structures are assembled on-site, before being lifted by crane and welded into place. The welding activities are progressing continually, requiring night shift work to be completed.

The first six oculus roof trusses have also been installed over the south stand, forming the first sections of the roof. The stadium will be a completely covered, with part of the roof made of a clear material called Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE). This will let sunlight shine through from the north to support turf growth while protecting visitors from the elements.

With 30,000 seats (25,000 permanent and 5000 temporary), and 36,000 capacity for large concerts, all under the cover of a roof, One New Zealand Stadium will be the newest premier and most accessible, inclusive, sustainable and flexible venue in Aotearoa.

Look after it

Your garage door smoothly and reliably opens up and closes down. Opens up and closes down without you even being fully conscious of it. Until it doesn’t. It is making an awful noise and is now stuck half up, and you can’t get your car out to go to work.

The first question Aaron and Hilary Harvey of Garador Christchurch will ask you when you ring them up in a panic is “Have you had regular maintenance checks done on your garage door?”

Unfortunately many homeowners skip out on routine garage door inspections. After all, as long as your door opens and closes it may be tempting to ignore any possible niggling issues and assume that everything is working just fine.

That may indeed be the case, however regular garage door repair and maintenance will not only keep the door in top shape, it will also help to uphold its warranty conditions.

Aaron and Hilary have these tips for maintaining your garage door.

1. Check it

Check your garage door at the change of each season. Take a look at the tracks, springs and locks. Make sure that items in the garage are not at risk of falling into the path of the door or the tracks. Rakes, brooms and sport equipment are likely culprits. Check over the panels to make sure that no dents have appeared and sweep around your garage door to remove debris that can gather quickly, particularly over autumn and winter.

2. Clean it

Every type of garage door will benefit from being washed frequently with a soft cloth to prevent blemishes and corrosion to the paint. Grit, sand and wayward leaves can all hinder the performance of your garage door.

3. Look out for small signs of a larger issue

A properly functioning garage door should not be overly noisy and it should open and close steadily. There also shouldn’t be a delay between pressing the button and the door beginning to move. Some of these minor issues can develop into bigger problems, especially if you are opening and closing several times a day.

4. Maintain it

Aaron and Hilary recommend that when you first install a new garage door it is checked within 12 months and then every two years. While you should check your door regularly yourself, any actual work on it should be carried out by professionals, such as Garador. Aside from the risk of causing damage, the large moving door can cause serious injury if you are not sure of what you are doing. A professional repairer can diagnose any issue and help you decide what solution is best for you.

As well as being maintenance and repair experts, Garador also install new garage doors.

Make your home healthy

While it is easier to build a “healthy home” from scratch, there are steps that can be taken to make existing houses healthier.

Passion forpassive homes

Building passively will save you money and keep your home at the perfect temperature year-round.

Passive homes are becoming more popular, and for good reason – they’re low-energy builds that require little power to maintain a comfortable temperature.

Co-owner and architect at Team Green Architects, Siân Taylor explains the importance of creating an energy model if you’re building a house. It will help you make informed decisions on how much money to spend on things such as insulation or extra glazing.

“It enables you to understand where you’re spending your money,” Siân says. “The other big thing that I think is really undervalued is the comfort. So, when you’re in a house designed to be comfortable, you’re never going to be cold.”

Imagine getting out of bed on a winter’s morning and feeling warm, or having a cool house on a hot summer’s afternoon — sounds dreamy, right? That’s what the crew at Team Green can help you achieve, a low energy bill and supreme comfort. They’ve helped people do without a heating system entirely, by using smart solutions such as spending a little extra on windows.

Head to the Team Green Architects website for more information on the healthy, low-energy and comfortable homes they can bring to life for you, and to get in touch today.

Consulting an expert is well worthwhile, as often they will tell you what can and cannot be done with an existing home. If you’re building new, there are now plenty of building companies specialising in that field. Retro-fitting is not always possible, although in most cases there are creative solutions. Again, talk to the experts.

Some opinions will vary as to what makes a healthy home, with aspects such as longevity, climate, and sustainability being taken into account.

New Zealand has healthy home standards for rental properties, so they’re a starting point if you want to research the subject. Effective heating, insulation, and ventilation, are among the essentials.

Important in keeping a home dry is to ensure moisture is kept out. A ground moisture barrier (also called an on-ground vapour barrier) will help with this.

Enjoy a fly-free space with ease

Imagine a summer breeze eddying through your house. Cooling, calming, and not a fly or insect in sight, thanks to innovative screen technology.

Building new, or retro-fitting, now is an ideal time to take measures and contact the team at Canterbury Window Coverings. It’s time to talk to the specialist team at Lohreys Blinds, which is part of the Canterbury Window Coverings business.

The team recently installed protective screens at iconic Flock Hill Station (pictured above right), journeying through snowy hills to its serene beauty. A peaceful high-country retreat, Flock Hill is renowned for its ambience and hospitality. Part of this comes from guests being able to relax in comfort, without being bothered by troublesome insects.

“We installed motorised Phantom insect screens,” explains Chris Swart, of Canterbury Window Coverings “Our client sought a solution for the pestering midges. Our insect screens keep pests out while providing clear views and natural ventilation. On windy nights, they also act as a wind barrier, all with the convenience of remote control. Our screens are fully retractable when not in use, giving you the space you need while seamlessly blending with your home’s design.”

The Lohreys team can access Phantom Screens’ virtual filing cabinet, making the integration to designing process easy.

“We have CSI 3-part specs, drawings, and 3D models (BIMs) in a variety of file formats,” adds Chris.

Say goodbye to mosquitoes and blow flies, and enjoy your entertainment area all year around. The retractable screens are a stylish, discreet, addition that complements your home décor. Best of all, you can enjoy natural air conditioning from the planet, without harming the environment. So why wait? Call Chris and the team today on 03 359 9173, or visit the website, and tell those insects to bug off.

construction

In the name of waste minimisation and reducing the flow to landfills, we consider the packaging of our weekly shop, aspire to natural fabrics over synthetics, and carefully sort our recycling.

Every bit we can do will help. So we need our large industries such as construction to get on board and make serious efforts to reduce the bulk that is dumped.

A leader in so many facets of environmental sustainability, Fraemohs Homes is once again setting the standard by reducing the bulk of its building waste. The team have adopted strategies such as efficient material usage and reducing excess in construction processes. “By 3D Modelling all of our solid timber homes, we can ensure appropriate timber lengths and buy these to suit,” says Business Development Manager Amanda van der Kley. Fraemohs also recycle and reuse materials whenever possible.

“Because we machine untreated timber first and then send it off to treatment, all our sawdust can be reused in the community, such as in chicken coops. Larger offcuts can be used for other timber solutions,” says Amanda. “We use approximately one skip on a Fraemohs Solid Timber build, where with other forms of construction, 3-5 skips may be required due to all the materials and their individual wrapping requirements.”

Sitting alongside waste reduction as a key aspect of their

sustainable practice, is their Thermal Modelling system.

“Our system analyses both heating and cooling of our homes, bespoke to the context of the local site and position on that site. Every part of the plan is evaluated, from the use of exposed concrete, to glazing type to insulation, to heating type and size,” says Amanda.

Of course, choosing a Fraemohs Home has always given clients the environmental advantage, right from the very beginning.

An incredible natural building material, timber is naturally warm and healthy, carbon negative, good for the economy, and easily handles extreme conditions including massive earthquakes. Each home features timber sustainably grown in New Zealand, meaning no international carbon miles, and no foreign forests plundered.

Research by Dr Larry Bellamy at Lincoln University found “The use of solid wood improves indoor humidity. During the cooler months solid wood acts as a passive dehumidifier in bedrooms during the night, and a humidifier in living rooms during the day. This produces more favourable humidity indoors, which translates into improved comfort and health.”

Solid wood also has a very high strength to weight ratio, providing protection in harsh environmental conditions and situations i.e. earthquakes, hurricanes, cyclones, tornadoes, and typhoons. It is low maintenance, as it does not dent or mark easily, resists staining, soiling, and odour build up.

The non-profit Building Information Foundation RTS found that “wooden buildings have the unique ability to reduce CO2 in the atmosphere. The wood used in a solid wood building stores CO2 as part of its natural composition. Trees replanted after they are harvested for solid wood buildings continue to produce lifegiving oxygen while removing and storing more CO2 from the atmosphere.

“Wood products can achieve negative net CO2 emissions - lower than any other building material.”

Fraemohs is proud to be leading the way through waste reduction, energy efficiency, and the use of solid timber for carbon neutrality. Amanda adds, “It is very clear that an investment in a Fraemohs Home is an investment in environmentally sustainable living.”

All red up

Energy conscious times call for elegant technological solutions. The time for passive or airtight dream homes has come, but it need not result in soulless or invisible heating systems.

The stunning Scandi-designed Bionic Fire, is ideal for passive or airtight buildings,” says Dr Rene Haeberli, owner of sole stockist Envirosolve. “These wood fires give you warmth, but also the cosiness and atmosphere of a wood fire that we all love.”

You can choose either the Bionic Fire with its round smooth-edged glass door, or the Bionic Fire Studio with its straight lines. A swivel option gives you the opportunity to direct the heat as well as watch the flames from different angles or rooms. Both fires offer the two external air options; through the floor or through the wall so your fire functions properly, but the building retains its airtightness.

The fires guarantee optimal heat without overheating your passive house. Efficiency is second to none, requiring only 1kg of soft wood or 0.8kg of hard wood an hour due to its double combustion. “The bionic fire can help you perfect the fine art of modern environmentally friendly living,” says Rene.

Pimp outdoors your

Increased enjoyment of your outdoors is a major benefit of installing outdoor lighting, even more so that summer is on its way.

Whether you choose to work with a landscape lighting designer, hang a few string lights in your pergola, or install some well-placed spotlights, it will be well worth the investment.

Good outdoor lighting has an immediate, positive impact, and can also increase your property value.

Aesthetics aside, outdoor lighting has numerous benefits, from illuminating the path to your front door, to deterring would-be burglars, and creating stunning visual effects of light and shadow among your plants. A favourite is lighting up the night on the front verandah, porch, or your pergola.

These are the basic types of outdoor lighting fixtures:

1. Spotlights generally point only in one direction; often used to illuminate garden art, plants, walls, and patios.

2. Flood lights are the most useful for brightening large areas; often used to light up driveways and patios from above.

3. Up and downlights are spotlights used to highlight specific objects or plants.

4. Step lights either go on walls beside steps or stairs, or on the front, vertical face.

5. Garden lights in natural areas can showcase your favourite plants, creating a soft ambient glow at ground level.

6. Bollard lights are inset or mounted on the tops of posts, and with no covers they cast light in every direction.

7. String lights or fairy lights are perfect for stringing through trees, on pergolas, and around porches, providing more subtle light for a picturesque scene.

Energy-saving windows

New Zealanders have a love affair with aluminium window frames. It’s not surprising, as these types of windows are lightweight, have a long lifespan, and will prove an asset to any home.

This is especially true when those windows have the extra benefit of being manufactured with a thermally broken technique. A thermally broken window frame combats heat loss by inserting a nonconductive strip between the two parts of the frame – the inside and the outside.

The barrier essentially stops the transfer of heat from inside to out by separating the two parts of the frame. With a thermal break in place, heat is not able to move past the inside of the frame, meaning a house retains its warmth and less energy is required to maintain a constant temperature. This type of frame is equally efficacious at keeping a home cool in summer.

NH Design distributes the MasterLine 8 series of thermally broken window frames. Director Fabian Schneider says “MasterLine 8 can do it all. It is one of the most high-performing aluminium window profiles that the manufacturer Reynaers has to offer and is suitable for highly insulated, low-energy and passive houses.

“The series also offers versatile design options and delivers excellent results even in the toughest weather conditions.” Available in four different design styles, Functional, Renaissance, Deco, and Block, they can be installed as either inward or outward opening windows. They’re also excellent for creating large window areas that maximise natural light, aligning with current architectural trends. “MasterLine 8 also has three different insulation levels”, says Fabian. “This allows homeowners to adapt window perfectly to their requirements, both visually, and functionally. Depending on the level of insulation selected, the thermal insulation value (i.e. how slowly heat moves through the material from inside to out) that can be achieved is impressive; integral to passive house construction and to saving energy.”
