Creative cuisine Christchurch is blessed to have so many amazing culinary offerings, from local cafés, restaurants, bars, and gastro pubs. Choosing where to dine (and drink) can be a tough decision, so why not step out of your comfort zone, and explore new options while patronising old favourites too. Almost three years ago, my foodie/winemaker husband Justin

and I arrived to live and work in Christchurch, not knowing much about the city’s culinary offerings. Our solution was to spend an afternoon browsing the internet looking for options, and writing each one on a separate piece of paper. The names went into our ice bucket. Now, when we head to the city, we pull out a name, and try somewhere new. Of course old favourites still make the cut, although it really excites our tastebuds to discover a different dining experience. Naturally, we continue to add names to the ice bucket, and that’s where Metropol’s Dining Guide proves invaluable. Chocka full of eateries, it’s a regular ‘who’s who’ of established and new hospitality businesses for those who live here, those who visit, and anyone wanting somewhere quality to dine. As our city’s footprint grows, so does the number and variety of eating establishments serving up classic and contemporary dishes, including creative new takes on Kiwi favourites, so make the most of them. February and March are busy times locally, with several major events scheduled, and thousands of visitors predicted. Join them in enjoying our delectable local cuisine. ollowing its Season 3 debut in Ōtautahi Christchurch, the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix will return to the spectacular Whakaraupō, Lyttelton Harbour on 23-24 March 2024. Back and bigger than ever, SailGP will bring more fans into the action than ever before, with plenty of thrills, spills, and boat-on-boat action. SailGP’s fourth season spans 13 events in iconic destinations around the world, with New Zealand marking the ninth stop on the calendar. Athletes will lay it all on the line, so be there to cheer on Peter Burling, Blair Tuke and the New Zealand SailGP Team. Live coverage of the event will be hosted on Television Three and ThreeNow, in addition to fan zones in central Christchurch. Currently, the teams are lining up to race in Sydney on 24-25 February, after which they will head to Lyttelton. January’s racing in Abu Dhabi bolstered Team New Zealand’s sailing reputation. Having mastered the light conditions and its nemesis - the 29 metre wing - it beat Spain and the United States in front of a sold-out crowd, taking back-to-back victories.

Pūtaringamotu A Christchurch park ranger has a special vision for an inclusive and enlightening experience at a beloved Riccarton heritage site.

ichael Steenson (pictured), the dedicated ranger at Pūtaringamotu/Riccarton Bush, is invested in the future of this natural haven. Thanks to a Masters degree in geography, he integrates local wisdom into the fabric of conservation planning and management. Guiding visitors and school groups through the bush, he has insights into refining the educational dimension of this vital space. While the Deans family narrative is prominent at the heritage site (through historic Deans Cottage), the perspective of the Ngāi Tūāhuriri, the hapū of the area, remains underrepresented. Michael highlights outdated signage and insufficient educational resources that currently hinder visitors from grasping the cultural significance embedded in this historically rich site. Michael notes, “The Deans family relationship with Ngāi Tūāhuriri was quite unique for the time,” underlining the connection where they rented the land and paid Māori workers on a par with their European counterparts, an unusual practice at the time. Despite the allure of sharing this narrative with international visitors,

Michael emphasises the importance of locals understanding the history beneath their feet. “I’d prefer to share the story with one local kid than with 1000 tourists,” he states. Michael draws attention to the practical challenges faced by certain demographics within the park. Uneven paths, courtesy of determined tree roots, pose obstacles for the elderly, parents with youngsters, and those with a disability, often hindering their ability to explore the bush freely. The Enhancement Project aims to address some of these issues with a brand-new boardwalk. With a commitment to making the Enhancement Project a reality, the campaign to raise funds will continue until the Pūtaringamotu team reaches its $2.4 million goal. Astounding paintings, carved taonga puoro (traditional Māori musical instruments), and beautiful music have been woven together for the exhibition Ngā Hau Ngā kau (Breath of Mine).

his outstanding exhibition opened at Canterbury Museum at CoCA on 15 December 2023 and will run until 28 April 2024. Talented artists, painter Robin Slow, master carver Brian Flintoff, and musician Bob Bickerton have collaborated for this work of art to explore narratives of Te Ao Māori (the Māori world). Together they have created an immersive space through expressive imagery and ear-catching soundscapes. Carver Brian, who created 36 pieces for this touring exhibition, is recognised as one of the

globe’s leading creators of traditional instruments. In reference to the work, he says “People see it as an experience rather than an exhibition. There are so many different facets. People return many times to experience it again.” Painter Robin says his works are multi-layered to reference the many Māori stories he has understood during decades of work. The CoCA team is delighted to have such a meaningful exhibition in the museum space. “This immersive experience will delight and fascinate the Waitaha audience,” says Canterbury Museum Tumuaki/Director Anthony Wright.

ART IS A GIFT

heck out the 2023 season of SCAPE Public Art before it closes on 14 February 2024. This season, SCAPE presents debut public artworks by exciting artists from Aotearoa, responding to the curatorial theme The Gift. “They [the artists] have carefully considered how gifting can be threaded through their work, not necessarily in the face-value way a gift is commonly understood, but in the cosmovisions to which each artist belongs,” says managing curator Tyson Campbell. Six larger-than-life artworks feature within a 4km walking trail. Additionally, there are five artworks (three sculptures and two murals) by local school children at Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre. “I feel honoured to be a part of this SCAPE season, alongside artists who I admire and respect immensely,” says participating artist Priscilla Rose Howe. SPRING TIME IS HEART-BREAK

n the exhibition Spring Time is Heart-break several artists have considered tangata whenua relationships with the land, water, natural environment, and indigenous species. Megan Brady (Kāi Tahu, Ngāi Tūāhuriri, Pākehā) has reconnected with her Ngāi Tūāhuriri whakapapa and the Rakahuri river, creating beautiful handmade carpets with flowing patterns that you can rest on. Madison Kelly (Kāi Tahu, Kāti Māmoe, Pākehā) prompts us to think about kakī, a critically endangered endemic wading bird, making a sound work, drawing and glass instrument to be played. Heidi Brickell (Te Hika o Papauma, Rangitāne, Ngāi Tara, Ngāti Kahungunu, Rongomaiwahine, Ngāti Apakura, Airihi, Kōtarani, Tiamana, Ingarihi) uses kelp to make elegant sculptures relating to language and Tangaroa. What questions will this elicit for readers? you might ask. “Having written a book is like spending hours with someone, sharing your perspective,” explains Stef. “It’s very different from the collaboration needed for film making. While Kiwis’ love affairs with property are far from over, a review of realestate.co.nz data from 2023 reveals it was a year where people sat on the sidelines, if they could.

he total value of residential property listed in 2023 was down by $28.6 billion, compared with 2022, as prices dropped and vendors paused. In 2023, $97,015,251,805 worth of property was put up for sale, which is the sum of asking prices on all residential dwellings listed on realestate.co.nz during the year. This was a substantial drop of 22.8% from the $125,601,880,575 listed in 2022. Some of the year’s real estate highlights include:

• For the first time in a decade, the national average asking price dipped below previous year. At $895,289, the national average asking price was also down by 6.6% from $959,034 in 2022.

• New listings nationally were down 12.1% on 2022, making it • •

The first seven months, and December, all recorded the lowest number of new listings for the month in 16 years of data (excluding during the April 2020 Covid-19 lockdown). Buyers in Gisborne had the least choice, with the smallest number of new listings and the biggest year-on-year decrease for the second year in a row. Popular regions exempt from market correction were the West Coast, Central Otago/Lakes, and Marlborough, the only three regions to see year-on-year average asking price growth in 2023.

One scientifically-sound reason for this happening is genetics. If your parents developed grey hair young, chances are you will too. HABIT STACKING If you want to start a new habit and make it stick, stack it on to a regular existing routine so it becomes something you do automatically.

ew York Times #1 best-selling author James Clear redefined how to build better habits with his 2023 book Atomic Habits. James, with insight from a 2007 Oxford University study, highlights that the brain builds a strong network of neurons to support current behaviour and the more you do something, the stronger and more efficient the connection becomes. “There is a phenomenon that happens as we age called synaptic pruning. Synapses are connections between the neurons in your brain. The basic idea is that your brain prunes away connections between neurons that don’t get used and builds up connections that get used more frequently,” he says. You can use this to your advantage to build new habits. Identify a current habit you already do each day and then stack your new behaviour on top. Habit stacking is a special form of an implementation intention. Rather than pairing your new habit with a particular time and location, you pair it with a current habit. Designed to help you incorporate more healthy behaviours without disrupting your normal routine, habit stacking can be quite life changing, says James. For example, if you make your coffee every morning, as the blend brews, take this time to add some movement into your day, perhaps doing 30 squats?

Here are some other habits you can stack: When you brush your teeth in the morning, stack the habit of applying moisturiser with SPF to protect your skin for the day. When you arrive at work, have a glass of water to start off the day hydrated. When packing the fridge with new groceries, remove expired items at the same time. When getting changed out of your work clothes at the end of the day, get into your workout clothes to make the journey to the gym a little more seamless. When you take the bins out the evening before bin day, walk around the block before you go back inside. Once you have mastered this basic structure, you can begin to create larger stacks by chaining small habits together. This allows you to take advantage of the natural momentum that comes from one behaviour leading into the next. Our lives are made up of the tiny things we do every day. Carve out time to examine your routines, as stacking healthy habits can have exponential effects on your future health and wellbeing.

(MAKES 1 CUP)

30g black mustard seeds 40g white mustard seeds 2 Tbsp honey

METHOD 1 Crush half the seeds and place in a bowl with the remaining uncrushed seeds.

2 Combine honey, vinegars, oil, peppercorns, tarragon, salt, and turmeric.

1 Tbsp white wine vinegar 1 Tbsp tarragon vinegar 2 Tbsp olive oil 1 Tsp chopped green peppercorns 1 Tsp chopped fresh tarragon 1/ Tsp salt 4

Pinch turmeric 1-3 Tbsp hot water

3 Add to seeds, along with hot water.

4 Put into sterilised, re-useable glass jars, and seal.

5 Leave 2-3 days before using.

TIP Use pink peppercorns instead of green.

Spread a generous amount of avocado on your bread base. Sprinkle with feta and pomegranate pearls to add some cream and crunch. Finish with pansies, which offer a colourful topping, their flavour mild and sweet to complement the adjoining tastes. Start with cottage cheese. The creamy, yet sour tang goes well with a few fresh fruits on top. Think blueberries or strawberries, something seasonal. Complete with common daisies for the aesthetic, and to deliver a slightly herbal edge. To complement a base of blue cheese, top with classics like fig, prosciutto slivers and pecans. Drizzle with honey to even out the strong flavours. Finish with violas for an added sweetness, while not being too overbearing. Make it Margherita style! Hummus on the bottom, with sundried tomatoes and mini mozzarella balls scattered around. Round off these flavours with some basil leaves and a few nasturtium flowers to add some sweet and spice.

hat said, Lotus’ internal combustion is not going out quietly. Say hello to the Emira, the last petrol powered Lotus, and it is “fab”. The Lotus Emira brings the lineage of driver focused sports cars such as the Elise, Exige, and Evora, full circle. This last old school Lotus is available as either a mid-mounted supercharged 3.5L V6 or 2.0L turbocharged four cylinder, the latter of which is co-developed by Mercedes-AMG. My test drive Emira was the former, mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Buyers can also option a six-speed auto for the V6 and an eight-speed DCT for the four pot. In terms of looks, Lotus has made the Emira look stunning. A combo of 20-inch v-spoke forged alloys, numerous ducts and intakes and the wide low stance of a textbook mid-engine sports car make the Emria look epic from all angles. Being the First Edition Emira, you get features like a tyre pressure monitoring system, two-piece brake discs with branded callipers, a premium KEF audio system, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and a 10.25-inch touch screen infotainment system and 12.3-inch TFT instrument cluster. Lotus also throws in a “Drivers Pack” as standard, with Sports suspension and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres. Slide inside and in typical Lotus fashion, it wraps itself around you. The leather and suede sports seats are comfortable and hold you firmly in place. The driving position is perfect, as is the way everything is laid out. So, what’s the Emira like to drive? Well, in two words, utter magic. Even around town, the supercharged V6 makes a range of lovely noises from burbling to a raucous six pot soundtrack at high rpm, something which one becomes rather addicted to after the first five minutes. You can even see the throttle cable moving in the rear view mirror every time you stand on the pedal. Whether in Sport or, if you dare, Track mode, the Emira enters its happy place. Throttle response is sharp and the hydraulic power assisted steering is so precise, giving some non power assisted feel. The six-speed manual transmission is a peach. A quick assertive throw not too far from that sports steering wheel and you can relive the process of supercharged induction and brisk acceleration again and again. Its 298kW may not sound like much, but given the size and relatively low weight of the Emira, this thing is spellbinding on the straights and hangs on like a cat on shag-pile carpet in the corners. What a last hurrah for Lotus’ internal combustion the Emira is. I really didn’t want to give this one back.

hat springs to mind when we think of that iconic lyric from Seals and Crofts’ Summer Breeze song? For me, it’s a summer drive with the top down and not a care in the world. How often, however, do those with a convertible car actually go topless? It seems to be a common thing in Canterbury. Even on the most picturesque, warm summer day, or evening, that high-end convertible in the lane next to you has its folding

metal roof or canvas top fixed firmly in place. Sometimes, you may just want to have the über coolness of your aircon blasting at full chat and fair enough. Surely, however, the whole point of owning a convertible, or cabriolet, is the ability to drop the top and experience the warm wind rushing through your hair? That’s a philosophy I subscribe to. Unless it’s pouring down, put the roof down. You have a soft top, so enjoy it as much as possible.

With much fanfare, Honda says its new CR-V is all about “dreaming bigger”. Ben Selby reports.

rom a design point of view, the dream comes true for the sixth generation. It’s 80mm longer, 10mm wider, and sports a 40mm longer wheelbase thanks to all-new underpinnings. It’s a good-looking SUV, with a new honeycomb grill, rear spoiler, and either 18-inch or blacked out 19-inch alloys. Spec wise, the entry level Sport AWD starts at $53,000, the seven seat Sport 7 at $57,000 and my test car, the flagship RS e:HEV is $67,000. My RS e:HEV’s 2.0L petrol engine produces 109kW/183Nm, and the addition of two-motor electric drive gives 135kW/335Nm. The new CR-V mimics the Civic and ZR-Vs interior surroundings by giving a high-quality

feeling cabin, with durable switchgear. There are plenty of new features, and oodles of kit now coming as standard. The RS e:HEV combo of petrol and battery power not only feels meatier low down in the rev range, compared with the previous generation, the new CR-V is a far more refined in terms of the way it puts the power down. That’s thanks to a 50:50 or 60:40 depending on where the AWD is needed most. You can corner flatter than before, and harder should you want to. This is by far the most accomplished and well-rounded CR-V yet. Not just the most intuitive, it’s also the nicest to drive. It will be hard for Honda to top this one.

Citroën have always made it their business to stand out and offer cars that blend quirky styling cues with forward thinking engineering. Ben Selby reports.

ou only need look at icons like the DS, 2CV, and CX to get the drift. Citroën’s latest foray into the future of motoring takes the form of the e-C4. An all-electric variant of the Crossover SUV, the e-C4 on paper seems to follow the mantra previously described. In terms of quirky styling, it has it in spades. I love details such as the thin LED daytime running lights, and full width chrome-esque grill with those two flicks encompassing the Citroën emblem. It’s a nice blend of funky angles and svelte curves front to rear. The meat on the bone of this Gallic BEV is a 50kWh battery pack driving the front wheels. Power is rated at 100kW and torque at 260Nm. The e-C4 is compatible with both AC and DC fast charging, the latter of which will give you 80% charge in half an hour. WTLP statistics also put the max range of the e-C4 at up to 347km. Inside, the e-C4’s stylistic eccentricity continues in earnest. Toys on offer are decent, including a colour head up display, 10-inch touch screen infotainment system with 3D satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, adaptive cruise control, wireless phone charging, heated seats, and an electric sunroof, to name a few. Interior space is also decent too for both front and rear passengers. Straight away it becomes rather obvious the e-C4 can serve up a comfortable ride. The softness of the Progressive Hydraulic Cushion Suspension gives the kind of floating ride which made big Citroëns of old, such as the aforementioned CX and DS, such a delight when traversing uneven road surfaces. Sure, those aforementioned icons have peak Citroën ride comfort, but at this price point and for a modern EV, the e-C4 is sumptuously impressive. Flick over from normal to sport mode and the e-C4 can make full use of those electric 100kW of power. Apply the go pedal, the nose rises ever so slightly and you waft forward nicely. It even holds well in the corners too. As a throwback to what made Citroën great while still aimed squarely at the future, it’s hard not be rather taken by the e-C4.
