Christchurch Rhythm finds its

On Thursday 9 June, Christchurch finally got its true groove back as the inspiring Home & Family Society presented the city’s very own Dancing with the Stars fundraising challenge.

C

harles Luney Auditorium at St Margaret’s College provided the stylish backdrop for a night of dance floor action that drew cheers of adoration from an excited crowd. With a goal of raising $50,000, the event – the second of its kind – saw dancers with little to no previous experience sashay, salsa, swing and samba their way across the floor vying for the judges’ attention, approval and high scores! With only six weeks of professional training to combat two-left-feet-syndrome and get a polished

Joseph O’Sullivan Photography performance in fine form, fourteen couples dazzled during the challenge. Two mini auctions during the night raised all-important funds and contestants were also asked to raise $1000 in sponsorship (individual or corporate), with all proceeds going to the society. Working with children, youth, adults and family facing barriers to positive outcomes in their life, Home & Family was originally established as the Society for the Protection of Women and Children and has been in operation for more than 115 years. Beautiful Outlook Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder but it’s also in the hands of Brigit Blair - wife, mother, grandmother, entrepreneur and natural beauty magnate.

M

etropol Magazine talks to the Linden Leaves founder about how her love for her children inspired a holistic and natural skincare range giving New Zealand – and the world – a very beautiful outlook.

What inspired the concept for Linden Leaves? It was out of frustration and necessity really. Two out of three of my children suffered from things like eczema, asthma and sensitive skin. At the time there was nothing on offer that wasn’t a steroid cream. I would try another variant and then another and my family was dealing with this every day. Linden Leaves was founded in 1995 as a response to the need for what we now offer – pure New Zealand skincare. What was your vision for Linden Leaves? It’s very much about effective, natural products created from the best quality ingredients. I have always believed that if something looks and feels beautiful, it really does make you feel better. I believe buyers of beauty products need all of the knowledge you can offer them so they can make an informed decision. It’s about being completely honest. We are about the little details – from the 23 carat flecks of gold we put into our Gold Range bottles using chopsticks to the oil roses we harvest and freeze dry ourselves. What is at the centre of your certified range? Oils – oil is a ‘go to’ product today for the face and body. Our oils are completely natural. Today, as a culture, we are very focused on the oils we can get from food - this has fascinated and inspired me with our products as has the array of natural ingredients available – organic rosehip, red rice extract, amaranth oil, liquorice and white mulberry. These benefit us inside and out.

Why does ‘natural’ mean so much to you and the brand? I believe it’s about finding a kinder and more sustainable approach for loving your skin. I think we’ve become so drawn to the promise of ‘instant gratification’ when it comes to our beauty. With a more natural approach it’s not about being reactive, it’s about achieving a healthy balance from the inside out. Healthy is what’s beautiful. We all age, but it is a matter of being happy about how you look at any age. What does your own beauty approach involve? These days everyone is time poor, and based upon that premise, products not only have to work, but be simple. I know for me beauty has to be a two minute job and it has to last all day. I work with our oils – following my shower, I put half a teaspoon of oil into my palms and massage it over my body. I moisturise my face with a few drops of our miraculous facial oil blended into the essential facial moisturiser. What skin challenges do New Zealanders face? We do need to care for our skin a lot more. Our climate is harsh - hot and dry or cold and dry. If we don’t have the heating on, we have the air conditioning going! We are bombarded by a lot of elements and therefore need to be kind to our skin.

BRIGIT BLAIR IS THE FOUNDER OF LINDEN LEAVES – AN INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNISED BRAND KNOWN FOR ITS NATURAL HANDMADE PRODUCTS. What support have you engaged during the evolution of the business? All the family has helped – they’ve been very supportive, especially during the early days. We have an independent chair and four years ago we engaged a CEO - someone with great experience to steer the ship. It is great having outside people with a family business.

The facts Linden Leaves products are made using quality organic and natural ingredients, fruit and flower oils, unique scents and essential oil blends. The natural botanical ingredients are sourced locally and sustainably wherever possible, in order to attain the highest possible quality of product. Linden Leaves avoids the use of chemical nasties and irritants such as parabens, silicon oils, sodium lauryl and genetically modified ingredients. Each of the active ingredients in the ranges have been carefully studied and selected for their scientifically proven skin enhancing properties.

What does success mean to you at Linden Leaves? That we are big enough to be economic and special enough that people feel the delight. Our objective is to exceed the expectations of the people who receive our products. What do you see in store for your career? The moment I lose passion is when I stop. Right now I’m still up at 6.30am every day and keen to go to work. I love learning about new ingredients and new ways of doing things. I also love customers teaching me about how they are using our products.

Short fiction for the shortest day Tell a story in 250 words! ‘Flash fiction’ plays in the space between poetry and fiction with the short form celebrated on the shortest day at the National Flash Fiction Day (NFFD) annual competition. “NATIONAL FLASH FICTION DAY BRINGS TOGETHER ESTABLISHED AND EMERGING FLASH FICTION AFICIONADOS.”

E

vents will take place simultaneously across the country on 22 June from 6-8pm, with the Christchurch event, Flash in the Pan, to be held at Space Academy where winners of this year’s competition will be announced. Well-known and emerging Canterbury writers will read their work, including last year’s winner, Frankie McMillan. Post-quakes, small narrative forms like poetry and flash fiction have increased in popularity, and a large number of Cantabrians have placed in previous NFFD competitions and been published in the flash fiction online journal, Flash Frontier: An Adventure in Short Fiction. Judging this year’s competition was a challenging task for noted authors, Elizabeth Smither and Christchurch writer, James Norcliffe, with over 500

entries received. “We are very satisfied with the final works - all of the pieces are very accomplished,” James says. “National Flash Fiction Day brings together established and emerging flash fiction aficionados to celebrate this unique writing form, encourage creativity within the community, and foster networks and relationships between different creative endeavours. In post-quake Christchurch, that’s important.” For those who are unfamiliar with flash fiction, James describes the form as very entertaining and accessible with the free local event set to be a wonderful experience of local literature. oreover, the factors that lead people to make new home purchases don’t just stop for the cold weather. Cindy-Lee Sinclair from Harcourts Holmwood offers her top tips for making the most of your home during winter.

Warm it up – Light a fire or turn heating up a degree or so when you show your home. A comfortable warm temperature will encourage buyers to linger, especially on a cold day. Make your house sparkle – Start your spring cleaning early and get rid of any cobwebs, clean windows inside and out, polish taps and mirrors, and dust furniture and light fittings.

3. 4. 5.

Create an experience indoors – Light candles in main rooms of the house to add a fresh fragrance and a warm ambience. A garden of imagination – Let buyers imagine what your garden will look like in full summer bloom by adding large urns, planters and benches, and ensuring that all paths and gardens are clear of winter debris. An immaculate exterior – Clean eaves, wash paintwork and tend to minor repairs to ensure your house looks well maintained and cared for.

A MURAL OF

EPIC PROPORTIONS By Hans Petrovic

‘Well wishes’ to the people of Christchurch on their post-earthquake journey of reconstruction is the message that Rachael Dewhirst conveys through her 205-metre-long mural, bon voyage, which was completed and launched last month.

T

he mural, which extends along the outside of the back fence of PlaceMakers Riccarton, is believed to be the longest in New Zealand. Anyone who walks that distance to fully appreciate this ambitious work of art will have no doubt that it is. Initiated and commissioned by

PlaceMakers; designed by Rachael Dewhirst; produced by SCAPE Public Art; and painted by Tobin Bain-Hogg of StreetSeen, bon voyage faces the railway line behind PlaceMakers. It gives train travellers to and from Christchurch the perfect opportunity to see and reflect on this amazing work.

The creation of the major arts-andindustry collaboration required the use of 200 litres of paint and 266 spray cans for the 23 colours, as well as countless hours of painting. Rachael has a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in printmaking from the University of Canterbury. She won an

award in 2012 for the design of the inaugural ‘Art in the Street SCAPE’ mural painted in central Christchurch’s Re:Start Mall. The brightly coloured mural measures 50 metres wide by six metres high. Rachael’s inspiration for the design and message of bon voyage comes from reflection on her journeys to the south of France, near the Spanish border, where she first went in 2014 and again for six months last year. Of course, she has also been to Barcelona. “I’m inspired by the work of Joan Miro and Henri Matisse, and there are a lot of artists and colourists in that part of France. My travels also engendered my concept of bon voyage,” Rachael says. “In recognising the role of PlaceMakers in the rebuild of Christchurch, I believe it was right for the work to convey a sense of life, hope and vibrancy for the future. The title of the work is just that, bon voyage, a hope for a safe and enjoyable journey, whatever and

wherever that might be.” Meandering from one end of bon voyage to the other is the Avon River, which is used as a rhythmical pulse that weaves its way through the design like a heartbeat tying the different pieces together. Figurative silhouettes and block forms can be seen, some distinguishable as animals, boats, landscapes and parts of architectural forms. Other elements are more abstract, with the intention of leaving the work open to interpretation and the imagination of individual viewers. The director of SCAPE Public Art, Deborah McCormick says, “This mural will provide much-needed vibrancy and a sense of optimism to a traditionally industrial area. We are thrilled that PlaceMakers Riccarton commissioned and initiated the mural, which continues to build on Christchurch’s reputation during this rebuilding period, as a world-class street and public art destination.”

Quick Fix: Makeup experts recommend using a contour brush and applying colour only to the apples of your cheeks and blending, as opposed to colouring the whole side of your face or moving in a sweeping line. This will lift your face and look much more natural. Lip Colour Fail No matter how many promises of longevity your preferred lippy proclaims, it will never last as long unless you do the appropriate ground work. Quick Fix: Pave the way for longer lasting lip colour by first prepping lips with a moisturising lip balm like pawpaw ointment and follow with either a lip primer or a layer of foundation set with powder. For touch ups during the day, squirt some liquid foundation in a little test pot to carry in your handbag. Blocky Brows While defining eyebrows frame the face, going overboard with the brow pencil can often make them look painted on, which is never a good look. Quick Fix: If you tend to go a little heavy handed on the eyebrow pencil, then try using a powder with a small, angled brush. Using light, feathery strokes, fills in sparse areas for a beautiful, natural shape.

Foundation Faux Pas Wearing the wrong foundation shade can catch us all out, especially with the change of seasons when our skin can go from light to dark over summer. Quick Fix: The fail-safe way to get the perfect shade is to apply two shades to your jawline side by side, which are closest to your skin tone and then have a good look in natural light to assess the best match. Uneven Eyeliner Stretching the area around your eyes when applying eye liner not only damages this particularly sensitive area and its elasticity, but beauty experts also warn that holding the skin taut actually makes for an uneven line. Quick Fix: Try using a Post It note as a stencil or guideline by holding it flat against the eye area at an upward angle to give the perfect ‘wing’.

years The Skin Rejuvenation Clinic is celebrating 10 years and being the first in the South Island to have Ultherapy!

I

t’s hard to believe that the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic has been around for 10 years helping people to look and feel their best. Lucky for us here in Christchurch, Doctor Brigid Lee and aesthetician, Denise Prosser, joined forces to bring their vision of a beautiful, boutique clinic offering, and safe, effective medical grade treatments to everyone who wants to look their best. “It’s amazing what a positive boost it can give someone when they have beautiful, healthy skin,” Doctor Brigid Lee says. The Skin Rejuvenation Clinic offers a variety of treatments to sort out the many issues that people

have as they age. Of course there’s the Botulinum Toxin and Fillers that help to smooth out wrinkles and plump up deflated cheeks and lips. Doctor Brigid Lee is an advocate of the very natural, undetectable type of treatments and takes a less is more approach to all the treatments she does. As she says to all her clients - “We can always add more”. Lately Brigid has been doing a lot of specialised treatments involving injecting hydration into the skin that produces a photoshop type effect – photofinish. “I can hardly keep up with the demand for this treatment!” she says.

Spectrum of options for the aging face

There are many skin treatments undertaken by Denise who is a medically trained aesthetician. These include IPL to remove sun damage and broken capillaries,

“I can hardly keep up with the demand for this treatment!” skin stamping to improve skin texture and tone, and microdermabrasion which leaves skin looking hydrated and luminous. Brigid and Denise have just added Ultherapy to the treatments they offer.

Ultherapy is the first non-invasive face-lift machine approved by the FDA and TGA to lift and tighten skin. It uses microfocused ultrasound energy at depths of 1.5mm to 4.5mm beneath the surface of the skin, which causes heat that leads to the contraction of collagen and the initial lift in tissue seen immediately following an Ultherapy treatment. Following this initial contraction, there is a second stage of the treatment process over the next three months that involves the ‘laying down’ of new collagen, which

leads to tissue lifting and tightening. An initial consultation is undertaken where the treatment is discussed and planned. There are several areas that can be treated - the main areas requested are the jowls and neck, but also the brow lift and décolletage treatments are very popular. Unfortunately, it isn’t a pain free treatment – it feels like little hot pinpricks under the skin (which is funny as that is exactly what it is) - but it is completely tolerable. Best of all, it’s a one off procedure. However, it is recommended to repeat the treatment every year to maintain the skin lifting and tightening as normal aging will still happen. This is an exciting treatment to offer people who want to lift and tighten their skin but don’t want to have a facelift. It is never going to replace surgery, but it’s a very good option with excellent results!

Committed Team It takes a team approach to provide excellence in patient care. Each step in the process is as important as the next, from the very first phone call and consultation, down to the end result of a confident smile.

“W

e look to offer the best care for our patients,” says Ronald Sluiter of OrthodontiX. “If you want quality orthodontics, you need to have qualified staff.” ‘Orthodontic auxiliaries’ is the official name for those who work alongside orthodontists, Ronald, and Sophie Gray. It is the aim of the practice to only work with certified auxiliaries, simply because it ensures the best care for patients. Shinae and Leigh are both qualified auxiliaries, with Rachael and Elina currently completing their training. Their role is as varied as the patients they treat - they assist in implementing orthodontic treatment through procedures such as taking impressions, inserting and

removing orthodontic appliances, and providing oral health education and advice relating to orthodontics. OrthodontiX also employs its own dental technician, Birgit, who makes appliances as required for individual treatment plans, as well as purchasing the myriad of products required. For the close knit team, it all comes down to creating an atmosphere of trust, ensuring parents feel comfortable entrusting the team with the care of their children, and a positive outcome for all. Goodbye To unruly hair

Fabulous hair is what Corkin + Friends does best. New in the salon is a Kerasilk Keratin Treatment Service, the latest in products from Goldwell.

THE TREATMENT IS UNDERPINNED BY HIGHPERFORMING KERASHAPE TECHNOLOGY.

W

ith damp winter weather conditions creating havoc with unruly or frizzy hair, the in-salon treatment offers long-lasting smoothing and conditioning of hair for 3-5 months (when used in combination with the Control Keratin Treatment products). “It basically relaxes your hair. It simplifies daily styling for those with more unruly hair,” Stewart Corkin says. “Our stylists have all recently completed in-house training with Goldwell.” The treatment is underpinned by high-performing KeraShape Technology, which actively interacts with the hair structure, penetrating it to create new keratin

bonds and re-shape the hair structure. For clients this is as simple as relaxing while the treatment solution is applied and left to process with a blow dry until hair is completely dry. Flat irons are then used to straighten hair before the solution is washed out. Stewart recommends use for those with short to shoulder length hair, and to wait a couple of weeks after the treatment before your next technical service. For more information and to book your next appointment, call the friendly team at Corkin + Friends on 371 9297, or visit www.corkinandfriends.co.nz and on Facebook.

Celebrant for Occasions

all

One of the most important decisions you will make when planning your wedding is choosing your celebrant. LAUREN HAS BEEN A PART OF OVER 70 WEDDINGS.

26 June 16, 2016 Metropol

I

t’s an area that is frequently overlooked, but couples are often surprised by how significant the celebrant is to their big day, says Lauren Kilkelly, who trained to become a registered celebrant in 2012. “It’s a short part of your day, but a very important part.” She says the most important responsibility of a celebrant is to help create a ceremony that is unique and sincere, reflecting the client’s personalities, tastes and wishes. “It’s something that I had always wanted to do. I love seeing people happy and I enjoy helping couples achieve their dreams.” While weddings are the most common occasion Lauren provides her services for, she also has experience with naming ceremonies and funerals. “I am available for any occasion, and the ceremony is always crafted with your input and approval. It’s all about you.” Based in Christchurch, Lauren will also travel anywhere in the country. She has been a part of over 70 weddings, and takes the time to get to know the couple before helping to create their ceremony.

Word of mouth references from many happy clients have kept her busy. “I’m just me – I don’t pretend to be anyone I’m not. I’m natural and relaxed, and find that a little bit of humour goes a long way.” Lauren also provides her own high quality sound system for the ceremony. Phone 021 208 1479.

These

Boots are made for Walking By Kate Pierson

Boots – they’re like your best friends in winter time. And, when a sensible investment is made, your trusty boots can always be relied upon to bring sexy back time and time again. THE KEY TO A GREAT BOOT BUY COMES DOWN TO A GREAT FIT.

F

or boots in winter 2016, black is the new black (isn’t it always?), but we’ve also got quite the affinity for rust. Smart, suave and a bit outside the traditional square, you can put your trust in the colour rust knowing that it is no shrinking violet. It will stand its ground for seasons to come and will help an otherwise conservative look really pop. The key to a great boot buy comes down to a great fit – sounds simple, but sometimes it’s easier said than done. While e-commerce dangles the carrot time and time again tempting us with sale items and free shipping and ‘the next best thing’, the smartest option is to go into a bricks and mortar shopping environment and try before you buy. The look of a boot doesn’t always give rise to the feel and it’s better to invest wisely. Even if the upfront cost is a little bit more, it beats the alternative which is ending up with a closet full of boot blunders.

Gift of Theatre the

At its heart, good community theatre has a generosity of spirit and sincerity that knows no bounds, particularly when it engages children.

Adapted & directed by Martin Howells

I

magine Charitable Trust in Christchurch produces community theatre in its most authentic form, nurturing and growing the Imagine Youth Theatre, which in turn empowers children and young people as both actors and audiences. Trust Directors, Helen Moran and Martin Howells, have inspired a much needed renaissance of traditional tales. From Hansel and Gretel and Sleeping Beauty through to The Pied Piper and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, they, and their talented performers, have excited the imagination of devoted actors and audiences. From 12-23 July 2016, the beloved tale of PINOCCHIO will come to life as professional actors together with the young people of IMAGINE Youth Theatre deliver a skilled and adventurous performance adapted and directed by Martin. “Our trust provides work for New Zealand artists ranging from actors through to set designers. It is fresh and relevant work that people can relate to and presents opportunities for young actors to be mentored and developed,” Helen says. “Each play that we do is a joyous thing in itself and I think – in this digital age – there is a realisation among people that we are in danger of losing some of the old archetypal stories that have a moral intactness about their world view. PINOCCHIO is the perfect example of a play with a strong moral compass that is as relevant now as it ever was.” Promising the same delightful characters

and beautiful virtues extolled by the original tale, Martin says he loves the opportunity to work with young people and watch their talent evolve. “We choose stories that are right for young people, and we don’t dumb it down. Our productions are multi-layered and we like to think of them as storybooks put on their feet. “We know every child or young person will experience our theatre and assimilate what they can. Young children may not understand every nuance, but keeping the dialogue ambitious is an important element in our productions. Lovely language feeds both the audience and the actors.” The visual richness of IMAGINE Youth Theatre productions is powerful in itself. PINOCCHIO will be full of colour, dance, movement and song. Those who don’t follow all the language will have their other senses engaged and captivated. “You don’t want young people to be inhibited going to theatre. If they are brought up going to theatre with atmosphere, they’ll be theatre-goers for life,” Martin explains. Helen adds, “Theatre is celebration. Kidsfest is celebrating 25 years of entertaining kids in Christchurch. PINOCCHIO is a tale celebrating children – celebrating their joy, their energy and growing up! A tale like this is readily celebrated, particularly at this time of year with KidsFest.” For more information about the inspirational work of the trust and theatre go to www.imaginetheatre.co.nz or visit www.facebook.com/ImagineYouthTheatre/

Whatever you call it – locks, tendrils, a mane, ‘the untameable beast’, or ‘your pride and joy,’ hair is a hot topic in perpetuity.

W

ith the power to transform, send loyalists to trends into a frenzy, and become the bane of our existence when it’s misbehaving, hair is the centre of attention on a daily basis across the globe and it’s the highlight (pun intended!) of Christchurch Art Gallery’s upcoming exhibition. A ‘playful take on everything from sideburns to split ends’, Bad Hair Day is a tongue and cheek exploration of the evolution of hair in an eccentric compilation traversing time and trend.

Gallery Director, Jenny Harper, says subversive humour plays an important part in many of the works. “With a pedigree running from William Hogarth to Leo Bensemann, Ronnie van Hout, Yvonne Todd and Steve Carr, Bad Hair Day weaves an unpredictable path through a variety of works and media, from historical painting to contemporary photography and video. “This is an exhibition guaranteed to both intrigue and entertain, regardless of your hairline,” she says. Learning to swim, or building on skills already learned during the school holidays is the perfect way to burn off extra energy especially when colder weather limits other activities.

A

t Canterbury Swim School, classes during the holidays are 30 minutes for beginners, 45 minutes for developing swimmers, and 60 minutes for more proficient swimmers. Classes run for five consecutive days during 11-15 July or 18-21 July and cost between $70-$90 for the week. Canterbury Swim School is a Gold Status swim school – one of a few in New Zealand. To achieve this, the Swim School had to meet high criteria, which included the quality of its staff, programme, management, and the facility itself. “We are really proud of the skill and experience of our staff,” Director Jenny Jones says. “We have a great bunch of people and a good mix of ages and genders so there is an instructor suitable for every child’s learning needs and proficiency.”

30 June 16, 2016 Metropol

Fellow Director, Huia Mikara, agrees and says, “Swimming also benefits many other sports such as rugby, netball and cycling as it builds an excellent aerobic base.” Places on the holiday programme fill up fast so it’s best to contact the Swim School as soon as possible to reserve your space. For those looking for ongoing tutoring there are still some spaces available for the term three programme. The Swim School also has a great range of Speedo and Zoggs chlorine-resistant swimwear for sale - it’s one of the few places you can purchase good swimwear all year round. Canterbury Swim School offers plenty of off-street parking at 25 Charente Way, Yaldhurst. You can also contact the Swim School on 03 260 2220 or via email at info@canterburyswimschool.co.nz

Bisque Serves 4 (makes 1 L)

HEIRLOOM tomato bisque By Natasha MacAller, the author of ‘Vanilla Table’

Traditional bisque adds shellfish and a roux. This version is vegetarian and gluten-free as it is thickened with vanillacaramelized onions rather than a flour-based roux.

Fresh heirloom tomatoes – 12 medium (1kg) 2 tsp brown sugar 3 Tbsp unsalted butter 1 vanilla pod, split and scraped 1 brown onion, chopped and peeled 2 garlic cloves, chopped and peeled 1 bruised bay leaf 350ml vegetable stock 1 Tbsp fresh cracked pepper 3 Tbsp of lemon juice Sea salt flakes ½ cup cream/crème fraîche/ Greek yogurt

Preheat oven to 375°F/190°C. Line a baking tray with lightly greased foil, then place halved tomatoes cut-side up on tray. Sprinkle with sugar and salt and roast for 40 minutes, until bubbly and lightly browned on top. Melt the butter in a 1½ - 2L soup pot with vanilla seeds and pod. Add onion and cook until translucent. Add garlic, bay leaf and stock. Add roasted tomatoes (or canned) and simmer, stirring occasionally for 20 minutes (30 for canned). Add pepper and season to taste with lemon juice and salt. Simmer an additional 5 minutes then remove vanilla pod and discard. Puree liquid with a stick-blender or food mill until smooth. Gently whisk in cream, yogurt or crème fraiche.

Green pea pesto 1 cup peas, fresh or frozen 1 garlic clove, chopped 5 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 tsp basil leaves, chopped 2 tsp lemon juice 2 Tbsp parmesan cheese Sea salt and cracked pepper ¼ cup crème fraiche to serve if desired

The Eggs Benedict - not as you’ve known it before sits on a crispy, textured homemade hash brown. Top that with the serene location, and it’s worth the visit. Cabinet food is all made in-house and is as fresh as the sea air itself. Sweet offerings have that homemade advantage, including the moist raspberry-infused chocolate brownies. The chef always creates a blackboard special of the day, and a food connoisseur’s soup such as decadent broccoli and parmesan cheese. All tastes and preferences are catered for with the extensive selection providing venison, lamb, beef and pork options, as well as catch of the day and other seafood dishes. With the same talented team who have been part of the Yamagen family for many years, the restaurant maintains the same standard of high quality Japanese fare, from its speciality Teppanyaki, to its most popular dish, the sushi and

WOOL FOR

winter

By Majka Kaiser

Woollen textiles not only add a welcome layer of warmth in the home, but introduce an extra element of interest by using different textures that indulge the tactile senses.

W

Indie Home Collective

armth underfoot can be achieved with a luxuriously dense wool rug, which also serves to delineate zones and create a focal point within a space. Position a rug at the foot of the bed, in front of a couch, or underneath a dining table. Hand-knotted rugs are the holy grail of wool rugs as they are the most durable, surviving generations. They often have the most unique designs. The next best thing is the hand-tufted kind, which is half manmade, half machine made. The easiest way to tell the difference is by turning one over - if the pattern is visible on the reverse then it’s hand-knotted, if there’s a backing then it’s hand-tufted. Woollen throws, blankets, sheepskins and cushions are great to snuggle up to and instantly transform a barren couch into a much more inviting cosy oasis. Cushions are the ideal décor accessory enabling you to run wild and experiment with colour and pattern. For a more formal look, symmetry works best with positioning and matching colours and patterns. If you want a more eclectic look, choose cushions in different shapes and sizes, mixing square and rectangular ones, and throwing in a circular one for interest. Drapes are essential for reigning in the warmth during the colder months. Make sure the drapes extend above the window moldings and when they are wider than the frame, they not only retain the heat, but give the illusion of taller and more expansive windows while letting in more light. To give the appearance of taller ceilings, extend the length all the way down to the ground. Make sure that the fabrics you use are lined with a thermal backing and are fit snug against the wall to trap the air effectively. Another great way to add a touch of warmth to winter interiors is with home accessories. With the resurgence of handcrafted wares, there are many beautiful adornments for the home made from wool. Crotchet and woven works of art can be found at local craft markets, galleries and online sites such as Etsy.com.

Erika Iris Simmons – a Chicago artist who works under the name Iri5 – has made her name fashioning portraits of famous figureheads, from Jimi Hendrix to Marilyn Monroe. She works not with a brush, but by pulling cords of tape from old audio and VHS cassettes.

S

ince her emergence on the art scene, Erika has blended the philosophies and methods of conceptual art with craft-making and popular culture to create her own whimsical installations. She explores the nostalgia of the archaic, using donated second-hand items as her primary media. Yes, the disposable plastic junk of our youth is experiencing a renaissance as a new generation of artists, designers and general nostalgia lovers repurpose the tech detritus of the 1980s and ’90s into art. Erika’s not the only instigator of this initiative.

Chris McCullough is a Los Angeles architectural designer who creates portraits of cultural icons including James Brown using audiocassettes like mosaic tiles. Jeff Farber sells pop-art-style desk and floor lamps fashioned from vintage PlayStations and Nintendo 64s through his Etsy shop Woody6Switch, while Jake Harms went into business recycling old iMacs into aquariums and desk lamps in 2007 after a boss directed him to toss an outmoded iMac G3 – an egg-shaped Apple desktop computer introduced in 1998 that became a fish tank. As these technological front-runners get their second wind, we wonder what earlydigital-era excess we could ‘upcycle’.

he mystique and magic of the sprawling 0rient has worked its way into our hearts and homes as an ethnic inspired aesthetic takes front and centre stage. CHRISTCHURCH IS TEAMING WITH INTERIOR DESIGN OF THE ORIENTAL PERSUASION.

48 June 16, 2016 Metropol

F

rom décor that pays homage to the rich history of China through to the Grand Bazaar style furnishings that imbue our homes with a bohemian vibe, The Orient offering is endless. Having spent time in The Orient – from longer stints in Cambodia and China to a high octane zip in/zip out adventure to Turkey, my own home covets a number of treasures that are a feast for the eyes and imagination. Some of the stores in our midst have embarked on great adventures to bring back soft and hard

Metrofloor

furnishings for our abodes that harness all of the wonders of these exotic cultures. In spite of the tyranny of distance, Christchurch is teaming with interior design of the Oriental persuasion. We’ve put together some ‘shop the look’ options to make your investments easy breezy. When looking to adopt The Orient inspiration in your abode, meditate on the following options too:

Minimalism matters: Oriental décor definitely marches to the beat of its own drum when it comes to lines and symmetry. Clean, structured lines are married with a minimalist approach to furnishing – in other words, fans of clutter should avoid this look altogether. Pinterest is always an excellent source of inspiration if you need to create a mood board beforehand to ensure you buy with a strategic vision in mind.

3. Frobisher

1.

Curate the perfect colour palette: The Orient packs a punch when it comes to accent hues – don’t be afraid to embrace intoxicating purples and vibrant cherry blossom pinks. Metallics like silver and gold add spellbinding pops of colour. It’s possible to introduce these shades on a larger scale through a statement wall, or on a much smaller scale through pieces like cushions or candles.

2.

A Bonsai bonanza: Okay, the Bonsai isn’t the be all and end, but it’s a beautiful example of how Oriental style greenery can transform your environment. A Buddha style statue also adds a beautiful dimension to your theme and is the epitome of zen décor.

Celebrating Beautiful

heritage

The rich tapestry of Canterbury’s heritage – tangible in its exquisite architecture – is renowned and respected the world over. Certainly there has been an immeasurable impact on Christchurch city’s nostalgic assets post-earthquake, but what remains in all its infinite beauty is still rightly celebrated.

A

t the helm of these celebrations is the Canterbury Heritage Awards. The awards recognise excellence in heritage retention and conservation within the public and private sector, promoting the values of best practice to the wider community. Award categories for 2016 included Domestic Saved and Restored, Heritage Tourism, Future Heritage, Outstanding Contribution to Heritage, Public Realm Saved and Restored, and Seismic.

50 June 16, 2016 Metropol

The ceremony for the biennial event held on Thursday 9 June saw the breathtaking Christchurch Centre Great Hall, restored to its former glory, honoured with the Supreme Award by a panel of six judges. The Great Hall’s revitalisation came down to an intensive labour of love. Work included a comprehensive programme of conservation, repair, restoration and seismic retrofit combined with discreetly installed modern technology in terms of sound, lighting, heating and facilities that

will ensure its sustainability well into the future. The painstaking conservation of the 1938 memorial stained glass window - all 3,600 pieces of it - completed the outstanding programme of work. Of the endeavours to bring the building back to life, the judges stated, “The commitment, professionalism and outstanding seismic and conservation programme undertaken by the Arts Centre of Christchurch on all aspects of the Great Hall post the earthquakes has ensured the

city will retain well into the future one of its heritage icons.” The beloved Bridge of Remembrance, tied for first place with the Isaac Theatre Royal (ITR) in the Public Realm Saved and Restored category, was damaged in the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes with repair and strengthening work culminating in a re-opening and re-dedication event held on ANZAC Day 2016. The judges recognised the impressive workmanship that saw the memorial arch and bridge returned to the community as the cultural and historical icons they are.

THE AWARDS RECOGNISE EXCELLENCE IN HERITAGE RETENTION AND CONSERVATION WITHIN THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTOR. The ever-iconic Isaac Theatre Royal was an equally deserving winner in the same category. The restoration and reconstruction of the ITR, bringing it back from the brink of collapse, was testament to the combined skills and dedication of architects and engineers, conservators and craftspeople, and an army of construction workers who returned this Edwardian theatre to its former glory. Hello, hottie By Kate Pierson

It’s a nostalgic concept but very much lends itself to today – and every wintery day for that matter.

Beautiful greenstone pendant from Blue Penguin boutique.

Y

es, the hot water bottle – it’s the perfect marriage of practicality and pleasure and a very generous companion on the chillier nights – seemingly the status quo these days. In the spirit of bunkering down with a blanket, woolly slipper boots and a big mug of indulgent hot chocolate, we’ve hunted out the best hottie covers so you can warm up in style. Fabrics that stand the test of time are always the savviest buys even if the price tags aren’t as bank account friendly. Simple logic – quality lasts, meaning you don’t have to make the investment over and over, which often ends up costing you more than if you bought the ‘real deal’ at the outset. Find yourself a hottie to hug this season – you won’t regret it!

Inspiration meets

ingenuity The long wait is over for the owners of an earthquake damaged home on Cashmere Hill, recently restored by Fleetwood Construction.

R

epairs for the beautiful four bedroom home involved major renovation work over a six month period utilising Fleetwood Construction’s skill and experience at working on challenging hill sites in Christchurch. “The home has beautiful polished concrete floors throughout that had to be repaired. This was not an easy job, but the finished product looked just like new,” Fleetwood Construction’s Sam Fleetwood says. “A major challenge of the job was that the entire driveway had to be replaced, and the retaining wall that supported it had to be anchored back into the hill. The team were working on a very steep slope, which created technical difficulties, but they really enjoyed the challenge.”

Sam project manages every build for Fleetwood Construction, on-site each day to work alongside his team to ensure his perfectionist standards of a quality finish are met. Clear lines of communication meant an easy and stress free process for their Cashmere Hill clients, with the satisfaction of a job well done seen in their client’s delighted response at returning to their fully repaired and renovated home. “From the outset we were impressed with Sam’s positive approach,” Charles and Rosalie Chalmers say. “He was happy to engage in whatever discussion or investigation was needed to arrive at the best solution and achieve the best outcome.” For more information, give Sam and Charlotte a call on 0800 381 381, or visit www.fleetwoodconstruction.co.nz to view a gallery of their recent construction work.

As lighter colours tend to reflect light rather than absorb it, small spaces can benefit from a pale palette. Keeping to one or two similar hues throughout will make cabinetry recede, especially when married with a light coloured counter. Dark colours can be used to create depth and won’t overwhelm a small space if used sparingly.

Keep it Simple

Maintaining a streamlined look is a good approach in small spaces. Keep dishwashers, fridges and other appliances out of sight by hiding them behind pocket or sliding doors.

What a Knock Out

Although knocking out a wall won’t necessarily increase your kitchen’s footprint, it will certainly give the illusion of a more expansive area. Opt for units that double as stylish cupboards that work together with existing furniture for a cohesive look.

Breakfast Club

For the most diminutive of kitchen spaces the breakfast bar is your best friend. If space is particularly at a premium you could go for a pull-down counter option. While it may be tempting to add cabinets below an integrated bench area to cash in on the extra storage space, first consider how the former affords the visual appearance of more space.

Maintain focus

Just because your kitchen is petite doesn’t mean it ought to be shy in the personality stakes. Choose one focal point whether it’s a splash back, an island, lighting or flooring and ensure you don’t confuse the space by using too many different colours or materials. Metropol June 16, 2016 55

dining in By Majka Kaiser

Setting the scene for dining at home doesn’t require extravagant measures, or a big budget; a little forethought is all that’s needed for a night to remember.

INDULGE THE SENSES AND ADD SOME PERSONAL TOUCHES TO YOUR EVENING.

W

hether it’s an intimate dinner for two you’re planning, or a group gathering, there are a few ingredients besides what’s on the menu that contribute to the success of entertaining at home. Indulge the senses and add some personal touches to your evening with these simple ideas.

1.

Whatever your taste in music, ensure the genre you choose is relaxing and not intrusive - especially as you sit down to eat. The only thing worse than silence at the dinner table is raucous music that inhibits digestion and negates any hope of engaging your dinner guests in scintillating conversation.

2. 3.

Dress your dining table with flowers, tea light candles or garlands of delicate fairy lights that welcomes conviviality amongst your guests. Add a sprig of rosemary tied with a ribbon, or brown string to place across dinner plates. If you have the time, add handwritten notes with inspiring quotes at each setting to act as an icebreaker for your guests.

It’s what’s

on the inside

that counts

Cymon Allfrey

Architect Cymon Allfrey shares his thoughts on why we should be looking inward when it comes to architecture.

58 June 16, 2016 Metropol

A

rchitecture is not simply about being shiny and new, it is about well-crafted, well-organised spaces that enhance living, not limit it. For many, however, architecture is only considered as an external benefit and as a tool that has been utilised to craft a well-orientated, well-dressed ‘shell’ of a structure on a site. It is often not until you step inside the ‘shell’ and are able to appreciate the space within, that the true value of an architect is realised.

As human beings we essentially all live and function the same way, meaning the basic needs for our homes – bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living – are the same, but how these spaces interact and connect influences how we experience and live in our homes. Both positively and negatively. Understanding this has a tremendous influence and relevance to the way we, as architects, design. Dressing the space is about aesthetics,

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE ALLOWS THE PROVISION OF A COHESIVE AND CO-ORDINATED DESIGN FROM THE INSIDE OUT. yet the success of your interior comes down to the relationships that exist between these spaces. The manner in which we clad and position our homes is intrinsically linked to the way it interacts with the site, the neighbouring sites and the local environment. To be deemed a success, the exterior must first interact positively with its space, before it can be

dressed. The same applies inside. Where interior design provides the finishing touches, interior architecture provides the canvas on which these touches can be applied. The interface of our spaces is vital to the notion of creating a well-crafted interior that will stand the test of time; an interior that allows for installations, such as the kitchen, to be

changed and replaced as fashion changes. The kitchen, while decorative in the big picture, needs to be well considered in terms of its positioning and connection to other spaces to ensure it is maximising its function within the home. The manner in which we envision different activities in our home, and how we want our interior environments to perform, is all part of the dream that is presented at the beginning of the project. Be it a new build or an alteration, where we envision having our morning coffee, eating our lunch, entertaining, and so forth, is influenced by the internal spaces we have available. Translating this vision for living is not a simple task of ticking the boxes around required spaces, but ensuring your interior has been approached holistically. Interior architecture allows the provision of a cohesive and co-ordinated design from the inside out. One cannot exist without the other, yet the success of one – inside – is intrinsically linked to the success of the other.

CHRISTCHURCH

CONTRACTORS ROLL UP THEIR SLEEVESFOR THE COMMUNITY Racing round a fitness track with a bunch of kids and the Vodafone Warriors was not how Simon Shearerbuilt had expected his day to pan out.

T

he fitness track was the idea of year five and six students from Linwood Avenue School as part of the Healthy Heroes Programme, which looks at how to stay healthy through exercise and health habits. The students developed their idea into a conceptual design, with the team at Shearerbuilt working to turn it into a physical reality. The opening day was a celebration for all those involved, including special guests the Vodafone Warriors and Beau Ryan from The Footy Show fame. Official ribbon

cutting quickly gave way to races around the track - exercise, laughter and most importantly, lots of fun. “It’s a fantastic resource for us to have. It has cool features that stretch the students in terms of confidence and ability, and fosters physical activity,” Principal Gerard Direen says. The fitness track was an idea that the school had been discussing for the past couple of years. “Simon made it happen – I can’t speak highly enough of the contribution made by him and the many businesses involved.”

IT WAS GREAT FOR US AS A BUSINESS TO SEE OUR COMPANY VALUES SHINING THROUGH. For directors Simon, and Paul Turner, and the entire Shearerbuilt team, the fitness track provided the perfect opportunity to give back to the community they work in. Shearerbuilt partnered up with an architect, sub-contractors and suppliers that the business regularly works with - each gave their time and materials to construct something special for the school.

“We are really thankful that they all wanted to be involved in the project,” Simon says. “It is a testament to the great relationships that we have formed since the company was founded in 2007.” Obstacles for the fitness course were constructed on-site at Shearerbuilt, with staff giving their time and expertise to complete the work over a short timeframe. The entire course was set up at the school

over a couple of days, and included obstacles such as crawl nets, tyres to run through, parallel bars, stepping logs and a climbing wall, to name a few. With a role that sees him more often in the office than out on the tools, Simon says, “It was a special opportunity for us to roll up our sleeves and to meet the children. I enjoyed being able to work alongside the rest of the team and it was great for us as a business to see our company values shining through.” This year has been the busiest yet for Shearerbuilt, with the company specialising in major renovations, multiunit builds, and commercial and residential construction. “We pride ourselves on being versatile,” Simon says. A huge Warriors fan himself, Simon was just as excited as the students to meet some of the players – an excellent warmup for the game against the Penrith Panthers the next day, with the entire Shearerbuilt team cheering them on from the sidelines. For more information, contact Shearerbuilt on 366 5280, at www.shearerbuilt.co.nz and on Facebook.

Floors Walls Simply Stunning

By Rachel Smith

There is great expectation when you work on one of the city’s prized heritage buildings.

A SPECIALIST IN TILING FOR FLOORS OR WALLS, INDOORS AND OUTDOORS.

N

ine months ago, the team from Metrofloor was sub-contracted by Hawkins Construction to complete the tiling refurbishment at the Christchurch Town Hall. Thousands upon thousands of Carrara marble tiles were carefully catalogued and uplifted from the floors and walls. Some were saved and put into storage, while other pieces were taken to Italy by owner Phil Mangos to find new marble to best match the original. Metrofloor is a specialist in tiling for floors or walls, indoors and outdoors, as well as providing hardwood flooring options for across the home. It recently launched the Listone Giordano range of timber flooring as the sole New Zealand distributor of the luxurious hardwood collections. Listone Giordano is a renowned Italian name, whose flooring features in design and architectural projects across the world, with Metrofloor having to prove its worth before being accepted as a supplier. “Listone Giordano is a prestige timber product – it is very strong, stylish and very eco-friendly,” Phil Mangos says. The hardwood flooring is manufactured from French Oak grown in Burgundy, France, following sustainable forestry management practices. Listone Giordano has its own green procurement system, Biosphera, which is certified by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC™) and the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®). Its hardwood collections feature a range of looks and finishes from sleek to textured - from the light shades of Oak Cemento to rich, dark tones of Shetland Oak - as well as unique laying designs. The versatility of Listone Giordano flooring made it the perfect fit for The Papanui Club, alongside ceramic tiles and vinyl flooring from Metrofloor. The business’ experienced and trained tilers provided a full installation service, overseen by Phil himself as project manager. “Customers deal with us from the start to finish,” Phil says. The service includes an in-house quantity surveyor, Josh, and interior designers, Cheryl and Maia, who work from building plans or a site visit to find the best solution for each client’s project, be it large or small. Through the distribution agency, Tile Space, the team sources a huge range of products, including

Bisazza Vienna Nero

the Italian hand-picked tiles of the Bisazza Mosaico collection. Thousands of 10 mm2 glass tiles are placed to create a wall of art, whether it is a feature floral wall in the dining room; a portrait of Bonaparte adorning a bathroom; or a textured, white tile splashback for the kitchen. It is expected that five containers of marble tiling will be needed to complete the work at the Christchurch Town Hall. Come another year and each will be meticulously installed, one of the final touches in bringing a piece of Christchurch back to life. For more information, drop into Metrofloor at 114 Montreal Street, call 379 9109 or visit www.metrofloor.co.nz

Revitalising the Volvo By Nicholas Henare

If you wander the avenue in Gothenburg in Sweden, you get the feeling it could be ‘The Strip’ of old Oxford Terrace prior to the earthquake. It’s incredible how close the town feels to Christchurch.

L

ike New Zealand, Sweden has brought the world some great things - ABBA, Absolut Vodka, Nokia and Volvo. Volvo means ‘I roll’ in Latin. A subsidiary of SKF, the ball bearing manufacturer, Volvo originally rolled off the production line with the ‘Jakob’ in 1927 in Gothenburg. This year Volvo is bringing us several options like the V90 Premium estate. The Volvo V90 boasts a high level of standard equipment, ranging from Large Animal Detection (I guess there’s the odd moose to avoid on Swedish Roads), to the second generation of Pilot Assist, a semiautonomous drive feature.

Then there’s the 40s Series - Volvo’s new global small car range, which will include a pure battery electric vehicle as well as Twin Engine plug-in hybrid powertrain variants, in line with the company’s commitment to the electrification of its entire portfolio. Volvo Cars plans to have sold up to one million electrified cars by 2025 globally. I personally take a fancy to the V40 Cross Country. Volvo is going through a lot of change and revitalisation trying to meet its competitors head on with a well built, stylish range of automotive options. The good thing about Sweden

is that it does things with style and grace. The new V90 campaign shows the former Paris Saint-Germain striker, Zlatan Ibrahimović, a long-time Volvo driver and

they’re fantastic. Just like me, Volvo has gone their own way and dared to think differently. The previous campaign we did was good, but this time it’s made by

I’ve seen the new cars; I’ve driven and tested them. And I think

Zlatan,” Ibrahimović says. You’ve got to love European football stars for their attitude. The new Volvos are elegant rather than flashy and very much worth taking a look at. The only Swedish I know is, ‘Jag Alska Dag’ – ‘I love you’ in English. A phrase worthy of saying about Volvo…and Sweden.

Ride

This month I find myself back at The Cuban Bar for another new bike launch by Andy and his team at First European. THE DEMAND FOR THESE BIKES WILL UNDOUBTEDLY BE HUGE.

68 June 16, 2016 Metropol

T

his time we are treated with not one, but two new models from the Triumph stable, namely the all new T120 Bonneville and Thruxton R. Let’s start first with the T120 with its watercooled 1200cc engine and six speed gearbox. With ride by wire throttle, selectable rider modes, ABS, and traction control, you could be forgiven for thinking that Triumph might have lost some of its DNA in making a retro styled bike with so many modern features. But the answer is no, not one bit, the bike looks and is the real deal. Clever touches prevail throughout the bike such as the modern throttle bodies hidden away behind faux Amal concentric carb bodies and

detailed engine finning to make the new watercooled powerplant appear air cooled. In terms of power delivery, the Triumph team has also played another Ace with the 1200cc engine producing 105Nm at just 3,100RPM and peak power of 80PS. On show, alongside the T120, is what can only be described as the ‘quintessential café’ racer - the new Thruxton R with its ‘high output’ 1200cc motor producing a healthy 112Nm at 4,950RPM and peak power of 97PS. Suspension wise, the Thruxton R wears Showa upside down big piston forks with Brembo monobloc calipers at the front and beautiful Ohlins remote reservoir twin shocks at the rear. The long café racer fuel tank is

adorned by a brushed alloy Monza fuel cap that cleverly conceals a locking mechanism and a brushed alloy tank strap. The top triple clamps are polished alloy as are the beautiful spoked 17” wheels shod with Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa tyres. The demand for these bikes will undoubtedly be huge, with Andy and his team already building a waiting list of customers keen to put down their deposits for their bikes while waiting for them to arrive. With a huge range of accessories available to personalise these bikes, Andy has promised that the demonstrator Thruxton will be something quite special. I, for one, cannot wait to see it!

The interior boasts highlighted leather trim on the steering wheel and gearshift, which is complemented by the sporty exterior look. Small details. The simplistic dashboard boasts an easy, interactive electronics/media system - the infotainment system - a breeze to navigate, and controllable from the steering wheel. Bluetooth and reverse camera are standard across the range, a proximity sensor with a two-finger zooming in function for the navigation system is also standard on the Highline, Cross Polo and GTI. I was making calls to friends within minutes with

an easily understandable display emblematic of the ease of the iPhone. The sound system is brilliant - when I was reversing, it would quieten the sound so I could focus. If you are considering a Volkswagen Polo as a new car, it’s punching way above its weight. The Polo GTI features the latest generation 1.8-litre turbocharged engine that delivers 141kW of power. It’s meant to go from 0-100kph in just 6.7 seconds. I think I got there faster. It’s also packed with sport suspension and XDS differential lock. Amazingly, it’s priced lower than the last model at a very affordable $35,990. The only thing that I would change is the tartan cloth seat but with $3,500 off at the moment, you could upgrade to leather and still have change. Thanks to its lighter weight, it’s performance is almost matching the Golf GTI which is priced at $56,990 + ORC. This is a serious contender for best all-rounder this year. Take the Volkswagen Polo GTI for a test drive. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

The Christchurch motor vehicle industry has its iconic brands - companies that are known by name and have a history to go with them.

I

’m going to take a more in depth look at some of those brands over the next few months and I thought what better place to start than Silvester Motor Company? There’s a reason I start here as it’s Donna Silvester at the helm - a woman I’ve come to respect over the years for her hard work and inner strength in an industry that used to be predominantly made up of men. I sat down with Donna and had a chat about where we’ve been, where we are, and where we are going with the auto

industry. Donna’s father began the family owned and operated business in 1961.

DONNA WAS GOING TO RACE MEETINGS AT RUAPUNA WHEN ALL THE OTHER GIRLS IN HER CLASS WERE DOING PROJECTS ON THEIR HOBBIES OR BALLET. The company grew and at one stage had four branches, including a Wellington branch. Donna started in the motor

industry in May 1979. She started out “from the ground up” and began her motoring career as a car groomer. “I guess I was ultimately being ‘groomed’ into the world of cars.” In 2010, the Silvester Motor Company was the first dealership in the country to be an authorised Isuzu D-Max dealership. Interestingly, the business was approached because it had proven its success in growing a new car brand in the region and the distributor knew the passion and

determination that the team faced with this challenge. Donna says, “It couldn’t fit better into our current Canterbury lifestyle”. As a woman in a very male orientated industry, there have been some

challenges over the years but Donna says, thankfully, there have been changes over that time. “There is certainly room for further improvement. “In the late ‘80s I became the first female chairperson of the Motor Vehicle Dealers’

Institute, sat on the board of VINZ, and was involved in starting the national body that is now known as the IMVDIA. Does the industry still have a residue of the old ‘boys club’? Sure it does, but they don’t call me the ‘Ice Queen’ for nothing.” The Silvester family has been very passionate about motor vehicles and Donna was going to race meetings at Ruapuna when all the other girls in her class were doing projects on their hobbies or ballet. Her projects were the race flags of Indianapolis. Donna’s father was pretty iconic around the race circles in the 60’s & 70’s in the famous ’38 Chev Coupe. Her brother (and business partner), Grant, who has been a New Zealand Trans Am Champion, accepts the annual invitations to let the Chev open up those eight cylinders, bringing music to the ears of many. Donna Silvester may have the nickname ‘The Ice Queen’ in the Christchurch automotive industry, but from someone who’s known her, and the family for decades, I think she’s the Queen of Hearts.
