Voltaire once wrote: “I’ve decided to be happy because it is good for my health.”
The French writer and philosopher is long gone, yet his sentiments have echoed down through the ages, arguably as relevant today as they were in the 1700s.
The holiday season has arrived, and for many it’s a well-earned time to relax, take a break, and be happy. Exactly what happiness is defies a simple explanation because it means di erent things to di erent people.
I know, however that happiness is often infectious, joy and laughter zinging from one person to the next like a pinball bouncing from bumper to bumper. It may bounce once, twice, even three times o one person, before pinging away to

another, then another. Children’s laughter, for example, often makes people smile, if only for a moment. Seeing other people relaxing and having a good time also spreads the vibe.
If nothing else these holidays, chill out, don’t let others get to you, and do unto others as you would have them do unto you. It’s not about money or work; it’s about taking time out, and appreciating what you do have; a day at the beach, a family get-together, relaxing with a copy of Metropol in your hands, or dreaming of what life could be.
Being happy is well documented as good for your health, so give it a go. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us at team Metropol.

Christmas cheer is near, and blissful holiday memory-making has begun. We asked four of our 2024 interviewees to share the way they will spend the festive season.
KIMBERLEY CROSSMAN
Iabsolutely love Christmas. Living much of the year in America has made me fully embrace the idea of celebrating holidays. Not in the commercial sense, but in the joy of decorations, festive foods, seasonal treats, and all the traditions that make this time of year feel so magical.
I’m definitely a ‘put up the tree early’ kind of girl. I adore watching cheesy Christmas movies, and since kind words and stationery are my personal passions, I spend time writing heartfelt, long cards for my special people to gift them on or around Christmas Day.
For my family, Christmas is usually spent in Pauanui, and with our big, blended family, it’s always a lively celebration. Each year, we choose a letter and buy a gift that starts with it for a fun round of White Elephant. This year’s letter is S, which is much easier than last year’s A. We’re also a very ‘participation’ family, so games are a huge part of the day. Things get incredibly competitive, but it’s all in good fun and adds to the festive spirit.
I can’t wait to soak in every moment this year—Christmas truly is the most wonderful time of the year.”
Ican’t wait for Christmas this year because I will be able to finally take stock of one hell of a year. I am bloody tired, I have worked damn hard.
The lead-up to Christmas is a big one for me, as on 18 December I celebrate three years booze-free.
That means my big treat on Christmas Day is now whitebait fritters for breakfast (no more Champers).
It will be a chance to reflect on a year that included being made redundant when Newshub shut down. I can be proud of how I have bounced back. I have a new show and Podcast at Stu , TFN - the F-ing News, that focuses on positive news. I released a book, The F-ing News, and did a nationwide tour, The F-ing News tour, of course. I’m proud of that, building it out of nothing.
Next year is all about positivity for me. I’ll really be pushing my positive news show at Stu . I have just finished my tour of 14 centres, I know Kiwis are crying out for positivity too. Let us all have a positive 2025.”

Christmas, for me, is about connection, pure and simple. It’s a time when the busyness of life takes a backseat, and we can truly be present with family and loved ones. There’s something awesome about gathering together, sharing meals, exchanging stories, and creating memories. It’s a reminder that these bonds are a better gift than the fidget spinner under the tree.
The season also o ers a quiet pause, a chance to reflect on where I am in life. It’s not about dwelling on what’s missing but appreciating how far I’ve come and the lessons learned along the way. It’s a moment to reconnect not just with others but with myself and my own goals and values.
Christmas is also a time to recognise our shared humanity. As the world sparkles with lights, it’s easy to feel a thread of connection to people everywhere, celebrating in their own unique ways. It reminds me that we’re all part of something bigger.
Most importantly, Christmas brings hope - a belief in new beginnings and the possibility of a brighter future. It’s a season of optimism, kindness, and joy. That’s what makes it so special to me.”
Itry to celebrate all the little things along the way, moments of love, celebration, milestones, but Christmas is a time of year we get to stop, put work aside and reflect on the year that’s been. To set goals for the year ahead and reset the batteries.
I have friends and family I only see once a year as we all live in di erent cities, but know that we all come together at Christmas. Wrapping paper is left on the floor for most of the day, we nap, sing, dance and enjoy each other’s company.
Every year it takes me back to my childhood and I’m so grateful for the Christmas magic my mother created for us all those years; it’s stuck with me and I hope to create that same feeling for my own family one day.”

Naturalist, photographer, and writer, Edwin Way Teale once wrote, “Those who wish to pet and baby wild animals ‘love’ them. Those who respect their natures and wish to let them live normal lives, love them more.” None would agree more so than Canterbury’s Willis family, founders of the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve.
Siblings Kirsty and Mark now co-direct the reserve that their parents Michael and Kathy opened on the outskirts of Christchurch in 1974. Times have changed, animals have come and gone, and the reserve has ventured down a conservation and interactive education path, creating new and satisfying memories for those now in the driving seat.
“When mum and dad opened Willowbank, they didn’t even have an entrance building, they just sat in an old Land Rover with a shoe box as a till and put an ad in The Press advertising 25 cents an adult and 10 cents a child,” says Mark. As a child, he remembers his father arriving home with boxes of secondhand nails. “My school holiday job was to straighten nails to reuse them because we couldn’t a ord new nails,” he recalls.
From those small beginnings, the reserve has grown to host more than 210,000 annual local, national and international visitors. Mark and Kirsty see its popularity and growth as a tribute to their parents. “They kept believing in their dream and holding firm on their vision, and now they have achieved something quite special,” says Mark.
Their own memories of growing up with the animals and birds are also special. “When the first Star Wars movie came out, Mark wanted a Luke Skywalker figurine for Christmas. Instead, we got a mountain lion cub in a dog crate wrapped in Christmas paper under the tree,” says Kirsty. They named the cub Lewis and took him everywhere with them, until his teeth and claws grew bigger, sharper, and play became too painful. Other memories include learning to ride a camel, and their dog feeding a family of otter pups in the house.
Both have had other business interests since leaving the family nest, yet they have always remained involved with Willowbank’s direction and with guiding a new generation to love and care for the wildlife.
With familes of teenagers and those in their early 20s, the legacy is already being passed on. “They [their children] all love and are passionate about Willowbank, and involved in some way so they can always come back if they choose,” says Mark.
Like their parents, Kirsty and Mark are developing a legacy of their own, recently buying the International Antarctic Centre near Christchurch Airport. During the next three years they plan to invest in new and improved experiences and hope to make Cantabrians fall in love with the spectacular icy centre again.
The two businesses are no stranger to each other, having worked together for years on marketing initiatives, and Mark says it’s a “privilege” to be the centre’s next caretaker.
“The International Antarctic Centre’s inception was brought about by Christchurch International Airport to showcase the city’s important Antarctic programme to the world.
Being a part of that vision and its continuation is important to us,” says Mark.
Local community involvement is also important to the siblings, and their ongoing vision. “We’re proud to be from Christchurch, and we view Willowbank as first and foremost being owned by the community of Christchurch; without their support we don’t have anything, the business doesn’t exist,” says Kirsty.
Willowbank and the International Antarctic Centre both have conservation advocacy at the core of who they are, and it is conservation that drives Mark and Kirsty to succeed, not just for the people, also for the birds and animals.
“A lot of satisfaction comes from conservation work. Our father had an unrelenting passion to help endangered species and we have willingly inherited that legacy,” says Mark.
WILLOWBANK WILDLIFE RESERVE
Still owned and operated by founding family members, Willowbank tells the story of New Zealand’s natural heritage, using pioneering and innovative display techniques.
The emphasis is on creating a natural environment, and an up-close and personal interactive experience. It is home to one of New Zealand’s best displays of kiwis, and is a conservation leader in native and endangered species, as well as many rare and heritage breeds of farm stock.

We are currently very busy dealing with both buyers and sellers of businesses. We usually find that during a holiday period such as Christmas –New Year, enquiries from prospective buyers for businesses ramp up significantly, and we believe that’s because people have some time to consider what they would like to do next, and the thought of owning a business has strong appeal.
We have been dealing with a lot of enquiries from out-of-town people who see Christchurch as an excellent location to live and own a business, and we expect
even higher interest as we move through the Christmas-New Year holiday period. We are seeing strong enquiry on hospitality businesses (cafes, bars, etc.) and on accommodation businesses (motels, etc.), as well as a wide range of other businesses. If there is one thing that unites Kiwis, it is the idea that everyone should have a roof over their head.
The intrepid souls that took to boats and crossed the seas from the di erent nations over centuries were all searching for the same thing. A place to belong, a place to feel secure, and membership of a community. They sought a home.
Reporting of the shortage of homes has been a constant soundtrack in the background this century.
Brent Manderson, Business Development Manager at Rentworks analyses the issue through Census data and rental market experience. “The Census shows many fourbedroom homes are occupied by one or two people. In Christchurch, 36% of households live in homes with four or more bedrooms.”
This trend has sparked debate about the impact of underutilised housing on the broader supply. Since the early 1990s, the number of homes with spare bedrooms has increased dramatically, with nearly 687,000 homes across New Zealand having two or more spare bedrooms, and an additional 550,000 with at least one spare room.
“Our experience in the rental market raises questions about the diversity of housing options being built,” says Brent. “While two-bedroom homes dominate new developments, we’ve seen increasing demand for larger, well-designed three-bedroom properties with features
like garaging. This points to a potential mismatch in supply and demand. Larger, older family homes remain popular with both owners and renters because they o er space and functionality that many new builds lack. This could explain why some renters choose to stay in these homes, they simply don’t see appealing alternatives that suit their needs.”
The team worked with a development that broke the mould by o ering variety. “One-bedroom studios, two-bedroom units, and three-bedroom homes resulted in a wide range of tenants, spanning di erent ages and lifestyles, creating a dynamic and balanced community. Diversifying home size will be key to meeting the needs of a changing market and supporting long term tenancies,” says Brent.
“Brent notes that rents are steady with the national median at $600 per week for the last seven months, while the Christchurch median is also holding at $540 per week.”
Factors combining to o er stability include: the O cial Cash Rate reduction, Kiwis leaving but new immigrants arriving, building consents at a five-year low, mortgage approvals down, and median house sale prices dropping.
“The signs point to moderate to robust growth in 2025,” says Brent, “population growth and urbanisation will drive renting, and student demand remains strong with the incredible popularity of the University of Canterbury.”
The Government is supercharging our maths action plan with a targeted maths acceleration programme.
The Government will be trialling a maths acceleration programme to focus Kiwi kids on the basics and set them up on a path to success. This year, shocking data showed just 22% of Year 8 students are at the expected national standard for maths. That’s why we have moved swiftly to implement our ‘Make It Count’ maths action plan to ensure students are set up for success. This latest step in our plan will make sure students who need the most help, get the extra support they need to achieve at the required curriculum level.
The trial programme will provide comprehensive support to around 2000 Year 7 and 8 students who have fallen behind in maths. To bring them up to speed, they will be involved in small tutoring groups and supervised online tuition for 30 minutes, up to four times a week.
Schools and kura across the country will see the programme run for 12 weeks across Term 1 and 2 next year. The Government will look to scale this up across the country from Term 3, informed by an evaluation of the trial.
This initiative is just part of the wider support the Government is providing teachers and students to lift maths achievement. We have also released a new knowledge-rich curriculum in time for Term 1 next year that sets out a structured, evidence-based approach to learning.
On top of that, over 300,000 students will benefit from high-quality, curriculum aligned workbooks, teacher guidance and lesson plans (and this will continue to rise). This $30m investment allows every teacher and child to have the resources they need to excel in the classroom.
The Government is committed to getting 80% of Year 8 students at or above the expected curriculum level by 2030. We’re working fast on our plan to make sure all Kiwi kids are equipped with the skills they need to succeed.
Parents and caregivers can rest assured that we’re laser focused on lifting student achievement and getting our education system back on track.

Christmas 2024 brings merry news of lower interest rates.
As 2024 winds down, the property market is navigating a mix of stabilising interest rates and the seasonal dynamics of home buying. The recent reduction in the O cial Cash Rate (OCR) to 4.25% down from 4.75% does mean better rates are on the cards from the banks, with some having already reduced their o erings. The decrease has been a positive signal, easing borrowing costs across the board for homebuyers and investors alike.
The lead-up to Christmas is a quieter time in the property market, as buyers and sellers pause for the holiday season. However, this year we have seen an increase in pre-approvals, indicating strong buyer interest. Properties priced under $750,000 remain a competitive price point, with investors and first home buyers coming up against one another. For buyers in this range, acting decisively before 2025 gets underway could be beneficial as house prices will rise, as rates continue to come down.
We here at NZ Mortgages are still in love with Christchurch, due to its relatively a ordable property prices compared to other major centres. New builds, townhouses, and family homes remain key segments driving interest. For investors, recent changes like the reduction of the bright-line test from 10 years to 2 years are creating opportunities to re-enter the market.
For those contemplating a move, the festive season o ers unique opportunities. Sellers are eager to have properties o their plates prior to Christmas and may be willing to negotiate further. As always, consulting a mortgage adviser from the team at NZ Mortgages will help you to secure the best deal in the market, and make sure your structure suits your financial goals and is tailored to your lifestyle.

Despite a challenging year for New Zealand’s property market, moments of resilience and divergence emerged, with multi-million-dollar prestige sales, double-digit gains and declines, and properties selling in as little as seven days.
The annual CoreLogic NZ Best of the Best 2024 report highlights the country’s top property sales, highest and lowest growth suburbs and best-performing regional markets.
The company’s Chief Property Economist Kelvin Davidson says this year’s report painted a nuanced picture of a market in flux after early optimism gave way to renewed price declines and slower activity.
“After an initial lift in values early in the year, driven by sentiment following the late-2023 election, property prices quickly resumed their decline as unemployment rose and interest rate cuts were delayed,” he says.
The CoreLogic hedonic Home Value Index (HVI) shows national property values have declined 5% since February, with Auckland and Wellington particularly hard-hit, while Christchurch and Dunedin proved more resilient.
Kelvin is cautiously optimistic about 2025, suggesting the country is set for a period of modest recovery. He estimates conditions could lead to a 10% rise in sales volumes and potential uptick in property values of around 5% over the year.
Best of the Best 2024 highlights
• Most expensive suburb: Herne Bay (Auckland) with a median value of $3.36 million.
• Most a ordable suburb: Murupara (Whakatane) with a median dwelling of $191,600.
• Top sale: 95 Victoria Avenue, Remuera (Auckland) sold for $20 million in March 2024.
• Regional performers: Blaketown (Grey) top annual median value growth at 16.7%, Cobden (Grey) recorded the strongest five-year gain of 108.8%.
• Highest rent change: Median rents in Nukuhau (Taupō) increased 27.7% over the year as Kawerau tenants experienced a -9.1% fall in median rents.
• Highest rental yield: Mataura (Southland) delivered a gross rental yield of 10.8% followed by Wellington Central at 9.2%.

Lip gloss is the handiest weapon in your beauty arsenal, for dewy, no-makeup days.
Like the noughties, lip gloss is again all the rage – but the product formulas look vastly di erent.
It could be argued that Hailey Baldwin Bieber’s Rhode Peptide Lip Treatments are to thank for the revolution. Becoming such a hit, Rhode phone cases were released, with a built-in lip gloss holder, and the global lip gloss market is expected to surge even more in the next 10 years.
Shifting from a focus on sweet flavours and bright colours, lip gloss products lately are made with skincare technology in mind. Beauty brands worldwide are producing formulas that hydrate, nourish, and enrich, without losing that signature shine. Ingredients, texture, and finish all come into it. Experts say to find your colour before shopping. Warm shades complement peach or golden undertones, while rosy or berry hues pair nicely with cool undertones.

The beauty industry is buzzing with those summer touch-ups, and one local hair salon is wrapping up a year of barely ever having an empty chair.

Forever a champion of healthy, beautiful hair, Caro reminds of the damage that can present during New Zealand’s summer. Just as we lather sunblock to our skin, she encourages giving our hair the same care amongst sport and leisure activities, recommending three essential products found on the Haar Design shelves.

LuxeBlond, from inside out, this range repairs hair fibres while neutralising unwanted warm undertones. With the shampoo, moisturiser, mask, and emulsion, achieve smoother, stronger, and brighter locks.
Achieve a youthful, lifted look with EM Visage, our advanced new treatment targeting both facial muscles and skin. Mindful and intuitive eating is an increasingly popular way of life in New Zealand. Taking time to enjoy your meals and listening to your body’s hunger cues is as essential as it is topical.
At a time when binge and undereating statistics in New Zealand are growing, having a healthy relationship with food is of high importance. Intuitive eating promotes eating without restriction, tuning into the eating experience, and allowing meals to be thoroughly enjoyed.
WHAT?
Intuitive eating promotes a positive relationship with food. Through non-restricted dieting, it allows the right amount of nourishing and satisfying foods to be indulged to meet our body’s needs. On a positive, it identifies all foods as equal, helping to eliminate food restrictions.
WHY?
Getting into the habit of intuitive eating has gained traction in New Zealand, and also worldwide. In Australia, over 60% of young adult women said they trusted their body to tell them when they are full, and over 75% stopped eating because of these cues, according to a 2023 study.* Benefits of intuitive eating include establishing a positive relationship with food and reducing binge eating, achieving higher energy levels and self-esteem.
HOW?
Learning to eat intuitively can be challenging. It is about appreciating and enjoying your meals, recognising when you feel full, and allowing yourself to eat the foods you love and enjoy. Before you indulge in your next post-meal treat, ask yourself if you really feel like it, and if you really do – then go for it. Food is there to be enjoyed. Seek professional advice for the best how-to.

Whenever posture comes up in conversation, the immediate response is often, “Oh, I have the worst posture.” It’s usually said with a mix of guilt and resignation, as though having poor posture is entirely a personal failing.
The truth is that the way most of us live today makes maintaining good posture incredibly di cult, says Dr Matt Wild of Connect Chiropractic. “Phones, computers, long hours sitting, constant rushing, and exhaustion all conspire to sabotage even the best intentions.
“Sure, mental discipline plays a role in improving posture, but the biggest influence is our environment,” says Matt.
“Think about it: if you sit for eight hours a day, how can you possibly maintain perfect posture the whole time? Five minutes of good posture feels challenging enough when you’re focused on work. If you’re rushing around all day and battling fatigue, it’s even harder.
“When you finally collapse onto the couch after a long day, well—let’s face it—there’s no such thing as good posture on the couch,” he adds.
Dr Matt’s advice:
Create an environment that supports good posture. The key isn’t willpower, it’s setting up an environment that makes good posture easier. Small changes can have a big impact:
• At work: Get up every 20–30 minutes to reset your posture. Stretch, take a short walk, or even just stand for a bit.
• At home: Instead of sinking straight into the couch after a long day, try lying flat on your back for a while to help your body decompress.
• Go for a walk: Walking is one of the easiest ways to naturally align your body. It’s a low-e ort way to reset your posture while taking a mental break.
When poor posture becomes a problem
“Unfortunately, long-term poor posture doesn’t come without consequences. Over time, tight muscles, sti joints, and recurring discomforts—like back pain and headaches—can set in.
“This is where chiropractic care can play an important role. At Connect Chiropractic, we often use posture as a key measure of progress because it reflects the state of your spine and overall body function,” says Matt.
“Chiropractic adjustments help restore proper movement to your spine, creating a foundation for better posture. When your spine is functioning optimally, holding yourself upright becomes more natural and sustainable. We believe posture is a window into your body’s overall function. When your posture improves, it’s a sign that your spine—and your overall health—are moving in the right direction.
“Next time you catch yourself slouching, don’t blame yourself, focus on small, simple changes to help you stand up straight.”
This Christmas, hundreds of parents will be forced to choose between spending time with family or their sick child in hospital. It’s a decision no one wants to make.
Canterbury mother Kimberley had her daughter eight weeks early in December 2021. Her local hospital didn’t take on babies younger than 34 weeks, so the Temukabased mother had to travel the two hours to Christchurch for the birth and her first weeks of motherhood. During that time, she received support from award-winning charity One Mother to Another, including a care package. “It made the foreign world we had been thrown in less lonely and made us realise we had other support while we were away from home,” Kimberley shared.
The charity, founded by Joy Reid, supports over 6000 parents and whānau with hospitalised newborns and children South Islandwide. Christmas is no exception. This year, Joy and her team are preparing to support hundreds more families while others enjoy the holiday. Their signature care packages provide practical and emotional support, and a handwritten note.
In early December, One Mother to Another volunteers undertook their biggest packing day ever, making 1310 care packages to be distributed across 16 South Island hospital wards during December and January. Special packages will be given out on Christmas Day, and 900 small gifts were crafted as a thank you to nursing sta
“It’s hard enough being in hospital with a sick child during the year, but to be there over Christmas and during the holiday period is that much harder,” says Joy, who founded the charity with another mother, both having experienced the stress of caring for a sick, hospitalised child.
Unfortunately, it is the reality for many during the festive season.
“We don’t want them to feel unseen or invisible. We want them to know they are not alone.”

Food is getting sweeter, and New Zealander’s are becoming more aware of their sugar intake.
Luckily, if there is any time to write o the guilt and extra calories, it is the silly season. What we can do though, is manage our portions by utilising gorgeous-looking bite-sized treats.
Hosting, visiting, and every catch-up in between, social exhaustion looms – even if we don’t want it to. Pop one of Hetal Vasavada’s Pineapple Lime Kisses from the recipe on the page over in your mouth, and that sugary boost will be the energy to keep going.
In-abundance fruits and berries such as peaches, nectarines, plums, watermelon, raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries invite colour and satisfy the sweet tooth, for the most part. Add them into or atop cakes and crumbles, or infuse ice blocks and ice cubes for a scorching day and refined drinks o ering.
Local kitchen retailers o er multiple ice cube moulds to be filled with fruits and berries, just make sure each cube will match the drink you plan to make. Slip long cubes into highball glasses or place one large cube into a tumbler, and enjoy.
After filling our dessert bowls to the brim daily, sometimes a bite-sized treat is all we want for the weeks following Christmas festivites.
These Pineapple Lime Kisses from Desi Bakes, Hetal Vasavada’s latest recipe book of indulgent delights, are just what the doctor ordered. Hetal loves these cookies for their bright, holiday-ready colour.
LIME COOKIES
• 1/2 cup plus 1 1/2 Tbsp granulated sugar
• 1 Tsp grated lime zest
• 9 Tbsp unsalted butter, at room temperature
• 3 1/2 Tbsp cream cheese, at room temperature
• 2 Tsp heavy cream
• 1/2 Tsp fresh lime juice
• 1/4 Tsp salt
• 1/2 Tsp vanilla extract
• 3/4 Tsp cornstarch
• 1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
• Gel food colouring
PINEAPPLE FILLING
• 1 Tbsp unsalted butter, at room temperature
• 2 Tsp pineapple juice
• 1/2 cup powdered sugar
• Pinch of salt
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
2. In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the sugar and lime zest and use your hands to rub the zest into the sugar for 1 minute. The sugar will start to look a little wet and smell fragrant. Snap on the paddle, add the butter and cream cheese, and mix on high speed for 3 minutes. Add the heavy cream, lime juice, salt, vanilla, and cornstarch and mix for 1 minute. Add the flour and mix until just combined.
3. Divide the dough into 3 equal portions and place each portion in a separate bowl. Add a di erent food colouring to each bowl and gently fold until you have an even colour. Try rose, red, and yellow gel food colouring.
4. Lay a sheet of plastic wrap on your work surface and spoon the cookie dough into thick rows touching each other. Roll the dough up in the plastic wrap so you have a log of cookie dough. Twist the ends of the plastic
wrap (like a giant candy wrapper) and cut one end o at the point where the cookie dough starts. Drop the log with the cut side down into a piping bag fitted with a star tip (Ateco 864).
5. Pipe 2.5cm dollops onto the prepared baking sheets about 5cm apart.
6. Bake the cookies, one sheet at a time, until the cookies are set and look like they are going to start taking on colour, 8 to 10 minutes, making sure that they don’t brown.
7. Let the cookies cool completely on the pan.
FOR THE PINEAPPLE FILLING
1. In a bowl, stir together the butter, pineapple juice, powdered sugar, and salt into a smooth frosting. Spoon the filling into a piping bag and snip o a 6mm tip.
2. Pair up the completely cooled cookies and pipe a dollop of pineapple filling onto half of them. Top with the other half of the cookies and serve.

Humans crave indulgence and comfort, and holidays are a time to dive into all of that – lounging, eating out, and fulfilling passions that top up our cup.
It is why we seek, or strive to seek, luxury apartments, hotels, and baches when we head on holiday.
Psychologists say these gorgeous spaces we stay in for only short periods become catalysts for creativity and inspiration, as we discover elements and objects we love to live with. Upon returning to our humble abode, ideas spark until we finally inject those things into each space.
The truth is, what we often love most are the loud, statement-making pieces or landscape elements that feel too risqué to do at home. Towering plants in bold pots,
avant-garde architecture, or multi-functional yet entirely luxurious constructions. Whoever said we should not bring this daring design mindset into our own homes?
According to leading landscaping and interior design experts, it can be done without over-cluttering or overpowering your current space, just consider two tricks of the trade: purpose and proportion. The practicality of your idea, and how it will fit within the scale of your space, are what landscape and interior designers encourage the planning of beforehand.
and
Let the creative luxury of holiday living come home with you, through purpose and proportion, for a statement outdoor space that truly excites your guests.
Anything well-planned and with purpose is sure to make a statement in landscape design. Luxury additions can be bar carts, built-in barbecues, and kitchen gardens.
Maximalist landscape and interior designers love to see these elements of outdoor entertaining pushed to the limit. This outdoor kitchen and dining area does so beautifully, with a grill bar, modern seating spaces, and stylish lighting.
Always fun to play with, applying proportion the right way makes such a statement. Think oversized pots homed by smaller ones, or plants that layer height and even texture. Pathways can ri o typical landscape designs, such as this unorthodox pathway (left).
Obtaining the right proportion will create harmony and cohesion in your summer entertaining spot.

The hibachi started as a traditional Japanese fire bowl or brazier, designed to hold burning charcoal to cook food over. A table-top cooker, it has evolved down through the centuries, with di erent variations in various continents. Versions available in New Zealand include traditional box style, cast iron, stainless steel, and electric.
You can use them to cook anything from vegetables to meats, so they are versatile and perfect for small gatherings.
Cooking with a hibachi is simple, if you follow a few rules such as these from Queensland’s Coolangatta Hotel ‘Guide to beginner hibachi grilling’.
1. Experts recommend using binchotan, a dense white Japanese charcoal that stays alight for 3-5 hours and can be reused several times. You can use lump charcoal or briquettes instead. Steer clear of fire starters or other synthetic materials that will contaminate your food.
2. Ingredients typically cooked include meats and vegetables, threaded on to wooden skewers, although like a traditional barbecue, you can cook a variety of ingredients. For skewers, select meats or vegetables that are soft and easy to thread.
3. Allow time to marinate your ingredients in sauces like soy, sesame oil, and chilli paste. The longer you leave the flavours to infuse, the tastier the final product will be. Soak your skewers in water for 10 minutes so they do not set alight.
4. Heat your charcoal using a chimney starter, an open-ended metal cylinder filled with paper at the bottom and set alight. Stack coals above the paper chamber, and leave to heat for 20 minutes or until they begin to glow and flames develop. Place coals into the grill in a single layer so the heat distribution is even.
5. Add ingredients and grill.
Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, happy summer.
It’s a time to reflect, regroup, give thanks, and for me to add to those important life lessons I’ve previously written about.
It’s one of the biggest lessons and I omitted to share it before because it’s probably the hardest one of all. It’s the lesson you learn from loss, bone-shattering loss and grief. People often think of grief as a one-dimensional process, but I’m told and now know that it flows beyond an emotional response and can be deeply physical as well as psychological and spiritual. It’s also very, very personal. People grieve differently and there’s absolutely no right or wrong as you navigate the depths of personal loss. It’s here that I’d like to ask permission to share the following.
Recently, our family farewelled my deeply loved and incredibly treasured mum.
This beautiful, humble woman, born up the Whanganui River, was a daily part of my – and my family’s – life.
I attribute much of the professional success I have been able to achieve directly to the unconditional support she and my father have given myself and my husband John.
This included living with us for six weeks when we had each of our sons to help and support in any way, to spending time with each of her four grandchildren, both collectively
and individually, throughout their entire lives, only stopping the weekly school drop-offs for my niece last year when illness prevented her from driving.
And although that illness was to take her from us in December of 2024, our family and Gary, my father and her husband of 62 years, were able to have daily quality time. Taking the good with the bad, the loss of mobility but never spirit, the fatigue and the constant advance towards the inevitable.
It’s made me so grateful for everything. The daily visits, the smiles that started from Mum’s eyes and then radiated to her entire face, the love and care shown from an entire whanau especially my only sister Elise, who performed Mum’s physical care as she became more frail, and including the commitment of the last of her nine siblings, who came down from her home to live with our family for much of last year, providing daily support, love and care.
Can you imagine that? A sister who puts everything on hold to allow her last living sibling to have the spiritual support and physical care to feel comforted in this time of need.
I have seen unconditional love in play and feel nothing but admiration for my beloved auntie.
As well as supporting my mother and our family, she also wrote a poem for my mum. I have since learnt that she has done this for every one of her siblings when they have passed, and
I find it enormously meaningful. I read it at Mum’s tangi.
It is the epitome of a life lesson, and I share parts of it with you in hope that it might one day resonate or provide comfort during a time of loss.
We are each made of quiet that the universe can hear.
Be at peace with how things are Walk softly so you can hear what is ahead
Keep your hand ready to your heart when grief comes.
Life says nothing needs fixing – all is a celebration.
We were made to bend so we would find the miracles at our feet
Made to stretch to discover the beauty above
And shine under the showers of love
For we find life is mostly quiet.
Thank you for allowing me to share this.

In holiday season here, there’s no shortage of outdoor adventures and beach days for Kiwi families, and their furry friends.
Taking the dog, or sometimes the cat, on holiday is part of the Kiwi psyche, bringing with it certain necessities to make trips enjoyable for humans and animals.
Specific items are essential for travelling with dogs and cats. You’ll need water and a portable drinking/eating bowl, poo bags, a lead, and some treats for breaks. Plus a harness to keep them safe inside. Some pet owners include a booster seat, familiar blanket and toy, or even a pet bed too. Remember that under New Zealand law, dogs riding on the back of a truck, trailer, or ute, travelling on a public road, must be secured in a dog crate or with a lead.
If your pet is not used to travelling in a vehicle, start with a few shorter trips to familiarise them with vehicle movement.
Don’t let them ride in the front seat; the Automobile Association recommends securing them safely in your vehicle’s rear.
When travelling long distances, plan a few pet-friendly stops along the way. Family members and pets will benefit from a break every two hours to go to the bathroom, stretch their legs, and in the case of the latter, have a quick sni around.
Mishaps do occur when travelling with pets so be prepared for quick clean-up jobs, with odour absorbers, air fresheners, wet wipes, and paper towels.
A quick online search shows that baking soda has a great reputation for absorbing unwanted odours without adding any of its own. All you need is baking soda and a bowl. Simply place 1/4 cup of baking soda into your bowl and find a place to pop it in your vehicle. Try a cup holder for example.
Once your destination is reached, and the pets liberated, give your vehicle a quick interior freshen up to get rid of animal odours and hair. Again, online commentators recommend deodorising your car by sprinkling a thin layer of baking soda on the floor mats, car seats, and other fabric surfaces (avoid leather upholstery and anything else easily damaged by baking soda). Let it sit for at least 15 minutes before vacuuming it o . An alternative suggestion is using a spray bottle with equal parts white vinegar and water. Vacuum first, then spray the carpets and seats and let them dry. White vinegar is a disinfectant, so the smell dissipates as it dries.

The Sharp team are really sharp! Great service, Victor was very professional, friendly and helpful. They all come highly recommended.”
A friendly and professional team to deal with. I was highly impressed with the service. From the first call to the end result, all within a couple of hours and they left no mess. The price was much better than I expected. Thank you to Lorraine, for your patience, who also helped with a minor issue. So helpful to deal with. I wouldn’t hesitate to go with Sharp Glass in the future.
Last-minute presents, or the ‘thank you’ gift you need for the hosts of your holiday escape, find the solution in the form of a plant.
Gifting a plant is more than it seems, symbolising growth and life. A timeless tangible o ering that dates back centuries, it is still a welcome gift in the 21st century. With biophilic design holding its reign in interiors, you will be pleasing the green thumb and homeowner alike.
From those new nesters in your circle to a gift for a loved one, a nicely-wrapped and easy-care plant is a thoughtful, personal gesture. Indoors, outdoors, at the o ce, plants, depending on size and allergens, can be housed in many places. Herbs and vegetables make great gifts too, for the more experienced gardener. If cared for well, these then turn into harvestable food, becoming the gift that keeps on giving.
Just like nature, plants present a multitude of moodboosting benefits, promoting a sense of accomplishment
and reducing stress. Far more sustainable than a bunch of flowers, plants, even blooming ones, are a gift of longevity. It is, however, important to be mindful of the receiver and the plant maintenance they can handle.
‘Plant parenthood’ is a thing, even if we are not sure how we feel about that label, so consider if you are gifting to a first-time ‘parent’ or a seasoned professional. With thousands of species across New Zealand, one thing is for sure: you will be able to find a plant to suit the gardening abilities of whom you are gifting.
Consider in the recipient: the time they have to water and care for a plant, their interest or preference in appearance or purpose, and any allergies they have. For children, a lowmaintenance plant may be the stepping stone towards the responsibilities of looking after a pet.
For our picks on easy-care plants, see the next page.
As does any living thing, plants require love, time, care, and nurturing to grow well. If gifting to a beginner, pick one of these easy-care houseplants and write the notes in a card to give with it.
MONSTERA (or swiss cheese plant): a forever popular indoor plant with large, leathery leaves, monsteras should be watered when the top 2-3cm of soil dries completely, ensuring it is not left sitting in any leftover water. Place in a bright spot, out of direct sunlight to avoid burning and browning. Clean the leaves, as necessary, with water, and milk.
MOTHER-IN-LAW’S TONGUE (or snake plant): these ultra-easy plants require watering every two to four weeks in summer, and prefer to be left dry than wet. Keep your snake plant in bright yet indirect light and watch its vibrant leaves thrive.
PONYTAIL PALM (Beaucarnea recurvata): utterly unique and interesting to admire, the ponytail plam is an easy-care houseplant. Thriving in warmer temperatures with bright, indirect sunlight, ponytail palms are incredibly forgiving and only need to be watered infrequently, yet deeply.
TIP: If the plant you are gifting blooms, write a note tied to string with words inside that read: if [friends/hosts/ family] were flowers, I’d pick you.

The $3.5 million project involved the demolition of the 30-year-old radar and concrete tower, then installing a stronger 19-metre-high steel tower and the new radar on top.
Part of an ongoing investment in the New Zealand weather radar network, the new radar uses the latest dual polarisation technology to identify di erent types of precipitation, be it rain, hail or snow.
MetService Chief Executive Stephen Hunt says, “The new radar technology will provide more detailed weather information for the Canterbury region. Our meteorologists will use this to enhance our weather forecasting and severe weather warning services for central South Island communities, and for aviation, and civil defence agencies. We are aware that the Canterbury radar is well loved by the region and are pleased to be able to deliver improved services through this leading-edge technology.”
The radar site, located three kilometres south of Rakaia, provides
coverage out to 300 kilometres encompassing all the Canterbury region, the central Southern Alps, and parts of Marlborough and Otago.
Kevin Alder, who oversees MetService’s weather observation network, says the radar can pick up the size of the droplets and their density which means rainfall rates can be determined in real time.
“Aside from its forecasting value to our meteorologists, the new rain radar will deliver significant benefits to hydrologists and emergency management sta in Environment Canterbury,” adds Kevin.
The aviation community also benefits from the new radar technology, which provides enhanced information on significant weather hazards, and more accurately identifies areas aircraft should circumvent to avoid icing up.
The radar imagery is popular on metservice.com and the organisation’s weather app.

Well, where did that year go? It’s hard to believe we’re about to celebrate Christmas and move into 2025.
It’s been another busy year for the Christchurch City Council and I’m sure everyone is looking forward to a well-deserved break over the festive season, as I certainly am. If you’re having a staycation or friends and family are visiting, there’s plenty of entertainment on o er in the city over the coming weeks.
The summer season brings with it several council events. You can see in the new year by getting down to North Hagley Park for the NYE 24 and NYE Kids’ Countdown. It’ll be a family a air, with something for everyone.
The Outdoor Cinema held in the North Quad of The Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora will have 11 movies on o er from 3-5 January and 10-12 January. A late-night screening to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Rocky Horror Picture Show will see people dress-up for the occasion in weird and wonderful outfits.
The Anthony Harper Summer Theatre will kick o on 9 January at the Botanic Gardens’ Archery Lawn and go through until 26 January. This year’s event will feature adventure on the high seas with ‘The complete voyage of RMS Titanic in 90 minutes’, brought to you by a talented cast of three and a musician.
As is tradition in the Mauger household, we’re o to the family bach just out of Motueka for the holidays. I can’t wait to put on the shorts and jandals, get down to the beach with the grandchildren, and end the days with a good old-fashioned barbecue.
I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, a safe and happy New Year, and a special thanks to those working through the holiday season. I look forward to catching up with you in 2025.
I’ve just returned from a whirlwind trip to Japan, filled with fantastic meetings and insights into the future of Christchurch’s global connections.
At the Japan New Zealand Business Council (JNZBC) conference, I had the privilege of meeting the Mayor of Kurashiki, Christchurch’s sister city.
The bond we share with Kurashiki, along with the insights from the conference, highlighted just how vital these global relationships are.
Christchurch companies like Fabrum and Dawn Aerospace are already doing business in Japan, and we’re seeing increased interest from international investors eager to explore opportunities here.
Another highlight was discussing Christchurch’s potential involvement in Tokyo’s G-NETS programme – a global network of cities that aligns perfectly with our Economic Ambition. It’s a powerful platform that would allow us to connect, collaborate, and tackle global challenges, while sharing our city’s strengths with the world.
Beyond the formal discussions, I was constantly reminded of how far we’ve come. From the warm words of New Zealand Ambassador to Japan Hamish Cooper, to the enthusiastic response from Kiwis abroad, it’s clear Christchurch’s reputation is stronger than ever. Our resilience, economic ambition, and innovation are drawing people to our city like never before.
This is Christchurch’s time. By strengthening our global connections and continuing to build on our reputation, we are well-positioned to take on the future. Let’s seize these opportunities and keep growing as a world-class place to live, work, and invest.

Te Papa Hauora Health Precinct is going to be a very busy locality as we move into the new year.
Next year will see business as usual in terms of supporting and facilitating health education, research, and innovation, and there are other exciting developments afoot.
With Parakiore Metro Sports Facility due to be completed later in 2025, plans are advancing rapidly on how best the facility can support the health and wellness of the wider community.
The juxtaposition of Parakiore and Te Papa Hauora was a deliberate post-earthquake strategy, to support connections and promote health and wellbeing in Ōtautahi Christchurch.
Recent announcements relating to the proposal to develop a CAR-T therapy manufacturing facility in the Precinct has generated a lot of excitement.
We are looking forward to seeing this cancer treatment national capability beginning to take shape next year.
And Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka University of Otago’s continuing commitment to the new $250 million building in the heart of the Precinct will add depth to the Health Precinct’s o erings. Details on exactly how it will be utilised will become clearer in the year ahead.
The Health Precinct is a unique construct in New Zealand, and it’s so encouraging to see it evolving at pace. It is yet another attribute that helps make Ōtautahi Christchurch the national city of choice.
Roll on 2025.

Chief Executive O cer of Master Builders, Ankit Sharma, says the competition remains a key platform for celebrating excellence in residential construction.
“Throughout the House of the Year competition, we see the best of what New Zealand’s residential builders have to o er. These projects reflect not only technical excellence but also a dedication to creating spaces that enrich people’s lives.

Water tanks come in all shapes and sizes, often large and unsightly.
Now, thanks to an Auckland company, property owners can install slimline tanks that double as stylish fences. In other words, your tank is your fence. Aptly named FenceTank™, you can create an almost invisible, slimline water reuse system that seamlessly blends into the perimeter of your property.
Especially suitable for small spaces, the tanks are proving popular in developments from single sites to high-density housing. An example is in Auckland’s Hobsonville Point subdivision where residents using the system to collect rainwater say they have saved an average of 56% on their water bills. Product suppliers, WaterSmart say this represents the same amount of water that can be used for potable purposes, such as washing the car, watering the garden, and flushing toilets.
Designed to collect and manage rainwater and stormwater, each slimline tank holds 1000 litres of water, equivalent to four-days water supply for average households.
Manufactured in the Lower North and South Islands, the tanks meet council requirements, are fast and easy to install, and have been approved for use on and within one metre of a boundary or building. Made with Rotathene tank grade plastic, globally recognised as the most appropriate grade for New Zealand’s harsh conditions and UV light, the tanks also comply with design and manufacturing standards in Aotearoa.

The 2024 ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Awards recognised two Canterbury projects amongst the winners, identifying the best of the best architectural design in New Zealand.
AFendalton residence by Sam Connell of Figure & Ground, featured in the 12 December issue of Metropol, won the award for the best New Home over 300m2, while an o the grid house in Ohoka was also recognised among the nation’s best.
The supreme award went to a holiday home labeled ‘Chodge’ in Waipamu Station in South Waikato. Described as a house within a house, ‘Chodge’ explores the concept of interstitial space, considering how you live when on holiday, the relationship with the landscape and the connection to a rural vernacular. A woolshed vernacular informs the ‘Chodge’ exterior form, while a translucent skin on the interior of the outer structure controls the heat gain and heat loss. The primary aim of the outer shell was to create a light emitting interior during the day, and a reverse e ect at night with the form taking on a glow from interior lighting. Inside this outer shell is an extruded wooden container, designed with Passive Haus principles, cave like in stark contrast to the outside structure environment.
Judges described the holiday home as remarkable and a beacon in the landscape, also deeming it best New Home between 150m2 and 300m2, worthy of a national award for home interiors.
In total, 10 designers, located across the country, won awards:
Darryl Church, DCA Architects of Transformation
Werner Naudé, DCA Architects of Transformation
Dian Tang, X Studio Architects
Steven Chambers, Stufkens+Chambers Architects
James Mackie, Mackit Architecture
Jon McAlpine, TGA Ltd
Greg Young, Young Architects
Carolin Friese, CF Architecture
Sam Connell, Figure & Ground
Darren O’Neil, O’Neil + Architecture
In the only national study of its kind for 20 years, nine out of 10 Kiwis consider their home to be a “healthy” place to live, although many still experience cold, damp, condensation, and mould, and wish their home was warmer.
The BRANZ study is collecting data from over 750 households across New Zealand. This includes a survey of 425 households, with 287 of these being monitored for energy usage and indoor conditions. Data from the household survey and early data from a smaller group of 125 homes monitored over winter 2023 show that homes – especially bedrooms – are warmer than when BRANZ last conducted this study 20 years ago. However, almost half (48%) of survey respondents said they had mould in their home (11% said it was larger than a sheet of A4 paper) and 33% said their home was damp at least some of the time.
Around one in five said they could see their breath inside and a similar amount said their home was cold enough that they shivered at least some of the time in winter.
While average daytime and evening living room temperatures in the homes studied exceeded the recommended healthy minimum of 18°C, average night-time bedroom temperatures remain too cold, with some significantly below the ideal.
According to BRANZ General Manager Research Dr Chris Litten: “The overall results suggest that home temperatures during winter
are better than they were 20 years ago, but issues of damp, cold and mould persist.”
Evening living room temperatures have risen from an average of 17.8°C to just under 20°C, and average night-time bedroom temperatures have increased from 13.6°C to 16.1°C, which could reflect an increase in the number of bedrooms that are heated as well as increased levels of insulation.
Unhealthy night-time bedroom temperatures are more common among lower-income households in the study. Bedrooms for young children were more likely to be heated than for others, however, around one in three reported never heating these bedrooms.
“It’s good to see an increase in bedroom heating and temperatures,” says Dr Litten. “This suggests that improvements in insulation and thermal performance are having the desired e ect, but building better needs to remain a focus,” he adds.
BRANZ is extending the scope of its original research to explore how energy can be used more e ciently, making living costs more a ordable and reducing carbon emissions.
• Additional insights from the study are expected to be released in early 2025. The full research report is available at: branz.co.nz/pubs/research-reports/sr495/
Interior shutters have long been celebrated as the perfect blend of beauty and practicality, seamlessly fitting both timeless and modern homes. Beyond aesthetics, they enhance comfort, energy efficiency, and privacy, making them a true lifestyle upgrade for the modern Kiwi.
Shutters o er an elegant solution for maintaining a comfortable living environment all year round. Their adjustable horizontal blades let you fine-tune how much sunlight and heat enter your home. In summer, they shield your interiors from the harsh, high-angled sun, keeping spaces cool and comfortable. In winter, they allow lower sunlight to stream in, naturally warming your home.
This ability to regulate your home’s environment passively reduces energy costs while ensuring year-round comfort—all without compromising on natural light or ventilation.
“Our Woodlore shutter range stands out as a market leader for its durability and cost-e ectiveness. Resistant to chipping, scratching, or denting, it’s an ideal choice for high-tra c areas or family homes,” says Chris Swart, of Canterbury Window Coverings. “Its waterproof counterpart, Woodlore Plus, o ers enhanced moisture resistance, making it perfect for bathrooms, kitchens, and other humid environments. With 12 stylish colours to choose from or the option to colour-match, these shutters can seamlessly integrate into any design scheme.”
In a world where privacy is a luxury, shutters provide an elegant and practical solution. They let in natural light while maintaining a barrier from outside view, making them ideal for homes in close-knit neighbourhoods or spaces like bathrooms and bedrooms. They also contribute to noise reduction, o ering a sanctuary of tranquillity for those living near busy roads or in urban setting.
No two homes are alike, and neither should your shutters be. “Canterbury Window Coverings specialises in bespoke solutions tailored to your home’s unique needs, working closely with interior designers, developers, and families to create shutters that suit any window or door,” says Chris.
“Whether it’s a sleek apartment, a classic villa, or a sunny Kiwi bach, our custom designs bring timeless appeal to every space. In partnership with Lohrey Blinds, our team combines over 77 years of expertise with exceptional craftsmanship and personalised service.
“A couple of our recent projects, completed just before Christmas, included a stunning bespoke home in Queenstown featuring fly screens, beautifully showcasing our expertise in transforming spaces with our extensive range of window coverings.
“Another stunning home we had the privilege of working on was nestled in the serene surroundings of Monks Spur, Canterbury, where our shutters added the perfect touch of elegance and functionality to complement its tranquil setting. From bold architectural features to refined, elegant details, our products elevate homes from ordinary to exceptional,” adds Chris.

What is the one approach to home design that most people can agree on? It doesn’t polarise with aesthetic extremes, it is timeless rather than trend driven, it is liveable, cosy, and translates across cultures.
We are talking Scandinavian Design. It is enduringly popular because of its simplicity, its emphasis on nature, and its clean lines.
Emanating from Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway, the birth of this design movement which combines beauty and functionality was no accident. Post World War II conferences in Helsinki, Stockholm, Oslo, and Copenhagen concluded that Scandinavian countries shared an identifiable common design ethos. Editor of the American magazine House Beautiful, Elizabeth Gordon then o ered the Scandinavian design ethos as an alternative to Bauhaus or Totalitarian design that was linked to Germany. Gordon presented Scandinavian design as democratic, natural, minimal, intimate and focused on the home and family. The “Design in Scandinavia” exhibition promoted by Gordon toured 24 American and Canadian cities between 1954 and 1957.
While Scandinavian design inspired the Mid-Century Modern movement in furniture design that became well established here, it was Monni Fraemohs who brought with him from Denmark to Christchurch a passion for Scandinavian solid timber home construction. For many years Fraemohs Homes were ahead of their time in New Zealand. The foresight of Monni Fraemohs is vindicated as builders and building codes race to catch up with his environmentally sustainable approach.
In 1968 Fraemohs Homes were, and they still are, the most environmentally responsible option there is. An incredible natural building material, timber is naturally warm and healthy, carbon negative, good for the economy, and easily handles extreme conditions including massive earthquakes.
Fraemohs have always made energy e ciency of their homes a priority. Their solid timber system contains significant thermal
mass in itself. “When the sun is heating the timber as a natural product, we are not necessarily having to add something in that has been manufactured in a factory,” says Adam Fairmaid, in-house designer for Fraemohs. “We utilise our own Thermal Modelling process to create homes that are warm but don’t overheat.”
As Fraemohs Homes entered the 21st century, the team have been careful to retain all of the original outstanding aesthetic and practical elements that comprise Scandinavian design, while developing new homes, floor plans and technologies. “We retain the natural, light, and airy colours, we let natural light flow through, we combine minimalism with great warmth, use organic natural textures, and of course we use natural materials, being so grounded in our local and sustainably sourced wood for cladding and framing,” says Business Development Manager Amanda van der Kley.
The concept of ‘hygge’ in Danish refers to a cosy and content feeling. Whatever your particular brand of hygge is, the team at Fraemohs have ensured their homes cater to your comfort. “You might love the minimalist white and creams, or your taste
might run to the more Nordic style which incorporates rustic elements.” says Amanda. “We can use open plan spaces, or more intimate rooms, and we are big on indoor/outdoor flow if that is important to you. Everything we do is sleek and functional in true Scandinavian style, but we have the expertise to ensure the benefits and beauty are combined in a way that is bespoke to you and the way you like to live.”
If you would like to take your minimalist and simple approach that step further, there is a range of designs ready to go, including transportables and kit sets in an array of sizes. “We are proud to be New Zealand’s number one Scandinavian style home and building company,” says Amanda. “We don’t think you can surpass our building aesthetics, sustainability, energy e ciency, or suitability for New Zealand conditions.”

Homes built before 2023 are often three times less energy efficient than homes built after 2023. Those built before 2007 are even worse, at four times less efficient.
Great news though, solutions exist beyond purchasing a brand-new build. Retrofitting and refurbishing to improve the quality of your home is an a ordable and practical solution to your energy e ciency woes.
“These homes [pre-2023] are likely to be cold in the winter and experience drafts and cold spots,” says Siân Taylor of Team Green Architects. “They are likely to overheat in the summer months if not properly designed to avoid this.”
The company’s architects are now working on several retrofits to improve the thermal comfort of existing homes, lowering power
bills and improving the design and connection to the outside. The work will also help to increase property values and reduce maintenance costs.
Most importantly, it provides comfort in your own home. Expect an improvement in air quality and better temperature regulation. If you have a home that requires the Team Green touch, contact Siân and her team for the ultimate in healthy, comfortable, and low-energy homes.

From roasting marshmallows to telling ghost stories, moments like these take place around a roaring fire.
The focal point of warmth, the hypnotic dances of flames, the intrinsic vitality. Together, these conjure up good feelings.
Where once we thought we had seen the last of a home fire’s charm, the brilliant technology of RAIS in Denmark o ers all the benefits without the environmental impact. Ideal for passive or air tight houses, these two Scandinavian designs gorgeously alternate between spherical or lineal, and swivel options mean you can watch the flames from multiple directions. The experts at Envirosolve bring these bionic fires to New Zealand. Experience optimal heating, “E ciency is second to none,” says director Dr Rene Haeberli. “Its double combustion requires just 1kg of soft or 0.8kg of hardwood per hour. Total chimney energy loss is only three to four percent. Wood consumption is minimal, and costs are super low.”
It makes the perfect match for those planning new builds, he explains. Creating a cosy, comfortable, and contemporary atmosphere, the double combustion adds the magic of both quiet and furious flames. Rene describes the former as “movement like the Southern Lights” and the latter being “a rocket jet burning the exhaust gas.” With two external air options through the floor or wall, find your fire fit at the website below. envirosolve.co.nz
Doors and windows play a vital role in having a healthy home, so it’s important to make the right choices when building new, or retrofitting.
Good looks are important too, with the design and style of both doors and windows adding to a building’s ambience and aesthetic, inside and out.
Double glazing is mandatory in New Zealand new builds, however European standards call for triple glazing, which ensures even better thermal and acoustic performance, as a growing number of New Zealand homeowners are discovering.
International company NH Windows & Doors is bringing the benefits of triple glazing to Kiwi homes with their range of precisely engineered, highly secure, and energy-e cient timber and timber/aluminium-clad windows and doors. With minimal maintenance and a long lifespan, it is a no-brainer.
Architectural designer Fabian Schneider says his team provides both traditional and customised designs, all of them featuring inward openings that are popular and commonly used across Continental Europe.
Wood is a preferred choice for many, however, an increasing number of people are also having timber/aluminium doors and windows installed.
“The external aluminium cladding on our Euro78’ALU timber window greatly improves the lifespan of the product and reduces maintenance costs,” explains Fabian.
“It is perfect for more contemporary styled developments, o ering the natural warmth of timber internally, combined with the durability of aluminium externally.”
The triple-glazed windows are argon filled, and significantly better in comparison to standard double-glazed windows. Cost-e ectively, they are 10% more than double-glazed options.
An added bonus is that the external aluminium can be powder-coated to match any colour, be it Colorsteel, Resene, or Dulux, while the engineered timber can be stained or painted. Soundproofing, security, and natural ventilation benefits add to the value of the doors and windows, even with the tilt window options. “The glass cannot be removed from the outside, while interior beading improves security,” says Fabian. Especially suitable for high performance or passive houses, the doors and windows come with fantastic acoustic benefits. “This makes them especially suitable for houses close to busy roads or other high noise generating objects,” says Fabian.
• O er easy cleaning and maintenance
• Open inwards
• Are available in double or triple glazing with excellent thermal and acoustic performance
• Internally beaded for improved security
