Sunny days are here again, the skies above are clear again... It’s not bright sunshine every day yet, however temperatures are hotting up, and business appears to be picking up too.
Warmer weather often brings a lighter, happier vibe with it; people emerging, blinking into the sunlight, heading out to brunch, lunch, and dinner, and generally feeling more positive. Outdoor events are to the fore, showcasing Christchurch’s stunning gardens, parks, beaches, and cultural o erings.
Longer days bring more opportunity to explore the city. Personally I’m checking out a few new eateries that have opened their doors, a couple of the latest exciting bars, and some old favourites.

I know it often boils down to personal taste, but occasionally it is worth leaving your comfort zone, and experiencing something completely di erent.
Challenge yourself to embrace life, grab it by the horns and get out there. Christchurch is a vibrant, happening city, and you will find no shortage of inspirational things to indulge in, especially in the lead up to and during Cup Week. A word of advice, if you are looking for that special outfit to wear to the races, get in early. Many boutiques have limited stock on some popular brands, and it is first in first served, so how about planning a bit of retail therapy, followed by lunch in the city. Better yet, head out in a group, and make a day of it.

Award-winning Christchurch interior designer Georgia Langridge is behind many of the region’s sleek, luxury bathrooms and kitchens. She talks design with Metropol Editor Lynda Papesch.
From a young age, Georgia was exposed to the importance of how a home’s interior should feel, fuelling her move into the design field.
“My mum, and even her mum, are very house proud and have a really great natural eye for styling homes and excellent taste. It became a natural progression for me,” she explains.
That progression led Georgia to the Design and Arts College of New Zealand, and currently to Modi Design where she is designer/director.
Early in September her skills came to national attention when she won the Supreme Bathroom Award, plus three others at the annual National Kitchen and Bathroom Association awards.
Her top ensuite bathroom entry, titled ‘Parisian Stay’, was praised by the judges for its unique features, stunning materials and tones.
a design; it makes our designs really well rounded and considered in all aspects.”
Georgia admits to having become increasingly “obsessed with practicality, and how people live”, diving deep to assess from all angles. “It’s so much deeper than how it looks. There are the ergonomics, and how people entertain, for example. I find that really inspiring as the base level to design from.” From an aesthetic perspective, Georgia gains inspiration from travel and nature, as well as her individual clients, and their architects.
Her advice to those wanting a career in interior design is to “to work hard and love it”. “Be open to pivoting, but also push as hard as you can to get into the field or specific area you want to get into, whether it be kitchen design, more on the furnishing side, or the whole interior envelope whether it permits financially. Do work experience to get a shoe in the door,” she adds.
“There are the ergonomics, and how people entertain, for example. I find that really inspiring as the base level to design from.”
“This designer has a very good understanding of bathroom design, they know how to define a space and we applaud the technical design. One particularly successful aspect is the way the space allows for communication and solitude; the zones are separate and at the same time connected, which allows for varying degrees of privacy,” reported the judging panel.
Georgia says the homeowner requested that the ensuite feel light and bright, while also moody in the evening. “They wanted a large double shower with a dumper and a bidet toilet, in addition to a ‘his and hers’ vanity with a good amount of storage. To create both moods of light and bright during the day and moody in the evening, I worked with natural and artificial light,” she says.
A showstopper element of the ensuite is the shower, designed in a decorative glass enclosure. The bottom of the glass detail is an etched fabric-look print which provides some privacy and ease for cleaning. The top of the glass is clear to flood natural light into the space.
Bathrooms may appear simple, however they are challenging spaces to get right, with many design pitfalls. The awards judges looked at various aspects of each entry, including the placement of the toilet, how the tiles are lined up, whether the lighting is to code, and that the space is aesthetically pleasing and inviting.
Bathrooms and kitchens are just one aspect of Georgia’s work. “We actually provide a full interior service where we cover everything within the interior envelope, from as small as wall colours and material selections, through to full bespoke furniture, kitchen and bathroom designs,” she says.
Much of her inspiration comes from working collaboratively, as a design team. “We’re constantly sound-boarding o each other,” she explains, speaking of the Modi team. “No project is solely one designer’s work, and I think that’s a real bonus to the end result of
These days, Georgia’s door is Modi’s new studio and showroom in Victoria Street, although when not there she may be found with her nose in a book, reading, and spending quality time with soon-to-be husband Blair, and their dog.
CURRENT BATHROOM TRENDS
• Deeper, more rich timbers being used
• Tiles with texture, whether a visual texture or a rippled 3D tile (generally in areas such as showers, that don’t require a lot of cleaning)
• Slightly heavier pieces, such as vanities, with more storage; less minimalism than we’ve been seeing, thank goodness
• A lot of deep dark bronze tapware coming through; whether that really takes o in New Zealand, we’ll see.
Aliningsilver
with Simon waites
The liquidation of the Silvermoon jewellery business in March 2024 provided a sterling opportunity for its founder to buy the company back. Metropol Editor Lynda Papesch caught up with Simon Thwaites about times past and present.
Every cloud has a silver lining, so they say, and for Simon it was an opportunity to turn silver into gold yet again by reinvesting in the jewellery business he originally started.
A familiar face to those who know the brand from days long past, Simon is resurrecting it, starting on home ground in Christchurch. Having sold his jewellery chain to an Aucklandbased company in 2017, he bought it back this year after it went into liquidation.
Despite having been out of the jewellery business for almost
seven years, he says his strong connection to the brand pushed him to see it return. “I have missed it. I was saddened to hear that the business had gone into liquidation, so I reached out to some of my former sta and suppliers to gauge their interest in a relaunch. They were all excited, and we quickly took the plunge,” he says.
The relaunch began on 21 August this year with a new store at Christchurch’s Riverside Market. A second store is opening in the brand’s former space at the Hub Hornby shopping mall in early November, with a third also tipped for the city before Christmas.
Simon says that retail has changed dramatically in the past
decade, and while he will have physical stores, his focus will be on delivering a world class website for customers.
“Our goal is to o er a retail space, either physically or online where customers can choose from the widest possible selection of both branded jewellery and our own individually chosen pieces, at the best prices,” he says.
He’s come a long way from his early entrepreneurial days running stalls at the Camden Market in London.
Like many Kiwis, Simon headed to Britain after he left university with a degree in journalism. Working in banks, he became bored after a few months, deciding he’d made a bad career choice.
“I accepted an o er to play rugby in America,” he reminisces. While there, he worked on a market stall, eventually taking the idea back to Camden in the 1990s, and that became the nucleus for Silvermoon.
His father’s cancer diagnosis in 2000 brought Simon home to Dunedin, where he and a friend set up the first Silvermoon kiosk. “At that stage, we didn’t stock any specific brands, but the kiosk idea proved successful.”
The subsequent death of his father prompted a move to Christchurch, with Simon taking over Silvermoon and going it alone. Silvermoon expanded to become a nationwide chain of kiosks and stores.
In 2007, the market changed with several new companies entering it, selling cheap costume jewellery for $5 a piece.
Simon moved the company model away from this end of the market. The move proved successful, with 13 stores across New Zealand, catering for locals and tourists, eventually allowing Simon to retire at 49. “I enjoyed playing golf, and surfing (and still do), but I missed the jewellery industry,” he confesses. “It’s fastpaced. You have to be up with what is popular and in demand.”
Simon owns a commercial property business, with premises in Auckland, Christchurch and Wanaka, but Silvermoon is his focus. He regularly travels to gift and jewellery fairs to acquire the latest products and ensure he is keeping up with market trends.
What’s big? Currently, layered necklaces, he says, along with both chunky men’s and women’s rings, and petite women’s rings.
“New Zealand is in a cost-of-living crisis and a recession, so people have less to spend. There has been a move back to our core products – a ordable sterling silver; good quality jewellery, mainly sterling silver and watches that customers have come to trust over 24 years.”
Part of the di erence is Silvermoon’s large selection, which includes brands such as Karen Walker, Stolen Girlfriends Club, Meadowlark, Boh Runga, Kirstin Ash, and Evolve.
The company also has its own brands, including LUXE (a gold and diamond range), Argento, and Louis Thompson Man, named after Simon’s son, now a 15-year-old helping in the business.
As for Simon’s own “bling”, he admits to owning a couple of watches, and a nice shark tooth-shaped, bespoke piece of greenstone carved by coaster Bevan Climo. On a sterling silver chain, maybe?

SIMON SAYS: INVEST IN THESE
1. Boh Runga Feather Kisses collection. They have been around for quite some time, but their popularity endures. Boh’s a very talented person. I have been lucky enough to meet her a couple of times and she loves her Kiwi themes, and the Feather Kisses range hits the spot with our customers.
2. Karen Walker, Runaway Girl collection. This is the gift that just keeps on giving. Karen is aware of the popularity and she continues to expand on this collection, with new twists on the same theme.
3. Any ring from the Stolen Girlfriends Club collection. I’ve known the lads from Stolen for quite some time and they keep pushing the boundaries with their edgy jewellery. Their rings are a must for most jewellery collectors.
DID YOU KNOW?
Sterling silver must be at least 92.5% silver.
Copper is the usual additive.

Now we need to build a new hospice,” says Sue Sutherland of Nurse Maude, who is leading the fundraising to make it possible.
For the past 15 years the Nurse Maude Hospice has operated out of the ground floor of the old Nurse Maude Hospital,” she says, “and while the quality of care remains exceptional it was never designed, or intended, for end-of-life care.”
The new hospice, with dedicated areas for children and ensuite rooms with garden views will also include family areas and be a place where family pets are welcome to visit.
“The cost of building a new hospice is around $15 million,” says Sue, “and thanks to some incredibly generous donors we are nearly halfway there, but we need the help of the community to get it across the line.”
“Nurse Maude has always been about people, not profit. Our commitment to providing care to some of the most vulnerable in our community started nearly 130 years ago in the streets of Christchurch when Nurse Maude established what was to become the country’s first district nursing service.”
Live & Local: Nurturing Chri church’s musical talent
Chri church has long been a city brimming with arti ic talent, yet too o en, our local musicians ruggle to find pla orms that allow their voices to be heard on a larger age.
Recognising this gap, the Isaac Theatre Royal is launching an innovative programme designed to spotlight homegrown talent: the local artist support programme, Live & Local.
At the heart of it is Bianca Lindstrom, the marketing and development manager at the Isaac Theatre Royal and music publicist and consultant Steve Guest. “This initiative is more than a series of gigs; it’s a lifeline for the music community, o ering unprecedented opportunities for exposure and professional growth,” Bianca explains.
Bianca, with her impressive career at Sony Music Entertainment in Australia, has worked with some of the most iconic names in the industry including The Foo Fighters, Oasis, Pink, Destiny’s Child, Bruce Springsteen, and David Bowie. Her wealth of experience and passion for music have been instrumental in shaping Live & Local.
“Christchurch has an incredibly rich music scene,” Bianca says. “Live & Local is our way of ensuring that local artists get the exposure they need and deserve. It’s about giving back to the community and nurturing the talent that thrives here.”
Steve Guest brings his distinguished 30 years in the music industry to the program, working with the likes of Dolly Parton, Jay-Z, Stevie Wonder and The Beach Boys. Steve served as the Head of Publicity at Live Nation in the United Kingdom for over a decade. Now based in Christchurch, he is eager to support emerging local New Zealand artists in their careers and his experience is invaluable.
“This initiative is about more than just giving artists a stage—it’s about building a strong foundation for their future,” Steve says. “We want to provide them with the tools, exposure, guidance, and support they need to succeed, not just here in Christchurch, but on an international scale.”
A pla orm for growth
Live & Local is designed to provide local musicians and bands with the opportunity to support national and international acts performing at the Isaac Theatre Royal.
For those selected artists, this programme o ers more than just a chance to perform. It provides invaluable exposure, networking opportunities, and fair compensation. Such support is crucial for artists striving to make a name for themselves in a competitive industry.
What sets Live & Local apart is its commitment to sustainability. This isn’t a one-time event, but an integral part of the Isaac Theatre Royal’s programming, ensuring that local musicians are regularly featured, Bianca adds. The systematic approach guarantees ongoing opportunities and fosters a culture of support and collaboration.
“We’re embedding Live & Local into our standard practices,” Bianca explains. “This way, we’re not just providing a temporary platform, but building a lasting support system for local artists.”
Community and culture
The benefits of Live & Local extend beyond the artists themselves. For audiences, it means a richer, more diverse concert experience and the thrill of discovering new local talent. For the Isaac Theatre Royal, it strengthens ties with the local music community and enhances the cultural vibrancy of their programming.
Moreover, Live & Local fosters a sense of community, creating opportunities for local artists to connect with touring performers, opening doors for mentorship and collaboration. This crosspollination of ideas and styles enriches the entire music ecosystem in Christchurch.
“We’re excited about the potential of Live & Local,” Bianca says. “We believe in the power of music to bring people together and enrich our cultural landscape. This programme will be a testament to that belief, and we’re eager to see our local artists thrive,” she adds.
“Supporting this initiative means investing in the future of Christchurch’s and Canterbury’s music scene. It’s an opportunity to celebrate and uplift the incredible talent in our city.”
For more information on how to get involved, visit the Isaac Theatre Royal’s website or follow along on social media.

Economic property powerhouse
Property continues to hold the title of New Zealand’s largest industry, according to new insights from Property Council New Zealand.
The latest analysis reveals the sector’s direct contribution to GDP has soared to $50.2 billion, an impressive increase of $25.4 billion since 2012. This figure now accounts for 15% of the country’s total GDP.
Leonie Freeman, Chief Executive of Property Council New Zealand, highlights the findings of the 2024 Property Industry Impact Report, produced in collaboration with Urban Economics.
“The report emphasises the sector’s substantial impact, with property surpassing other major GDP contributors such as manufacturing (10%), agriculture, forestry, and fishing (6%), and health (7%),” says Leonie.
“In 2022, the broader economic influence of the property industry was a staggering $142.7 billion. This includes a direct impact of $50.2 billion and additional economic activities from suppliers and employees. Property stands as the second-largest employer in Aotearoa, providing jobs for 10% of New Zealand’s workforce, with 235,030 individuals employed in the sector.
“One intriguing insight is the significant number of New Zealanders who indirectly invest in property through KiwiSaver schemes, with 2.4 million people holding investments in this asset class. KiwiSaver funds allocate $3.6 billion (3.3%) to property, reflecting widespread participation across all fund types,” she adds.
As of 2023, the value of listed property companies on the NZX stands at approximately $32 billion, representing 20% of the total value of the New Zealand stock market. When combined with the $1900 billion value of the nation’s residential property stock and the $350 billion value of commercial property stock, the sector emerges as a colossal economic force.

Investing in your future Career choices unlocked
Mortgages are often seen as a bad debt, whereas they are actually an amazing tool to generate additional wealth.
Whether it simply be paying down your home lending, or owning investment properties where your tenants pay the mortgage, the options can be endless.
The thing to be mindful of however, is that there are costs with owning an investment property, and the rental income is often not enough to pay the mortgage alone. So, you have to be prepared to top it up with your own money. Then, you also have rates and insurances on top of the mortgage costs. A good client of mine said she treats these costs as her compulsory savings – knowing that she will (hopefully) get this money back in the future when she sells the home.
It’s a long game – just like owning a house and having a mortgage. Most people don’t actually stay in their homes for 30 years anymore, yet the banks will give a loan term of that time frame. It’s to help balance out those payments and make the loans more a ordable.

Architectural history makes the
big scr n
New Zealand’s most famous architects’ story goes nationwide.
Following record-breaking extended theatre runs in Christchurch and hundreds of high-rated reviews, MAURICE AND I made its debut screening in 30 cinemas across New Zealand at the beginning of September.
It made o cial selection for the prestigious Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam in October, a leading international film festival for architects, city lovers, film bu s, and students.
The film unveils the architectural brilliance of Sir Miles Warren and Maurice Mahoney through rare archival footage and exclusive interviews, including their final conversation together. The film reflects on the pair’s legacy, through their bold architectural vision and the significance of this in the architecture community today.
Your child may see well – we assess HOW they see
Co-directed by Jane Mahoney, the daughter of the late architect, it is a love letter from a daughter to her father. It is a celebration of the community, and a tribute to the trauma Christchurch has endured.
“MAURICE AND I explores the universal themes of respect, love and loss,” says Mahoney. “It’s a story of the creative power of true partnership, of craft, passion and innovation, and the transformative power of architecture.”
The film entails the pair’s most significant, revolutionised architecture, the Christchurch Town Hall, and the lengths they went through to save the building post-earthquake.
MAURICE AND I has seen great success since its premiere in Christchurch in May this year. The film had been limited to Christchurch theatres but made its national debut this month after becoming the highestgrossing film ever at the Deluxe Cinemas.
Co-directors and coproducers of MAURICE AND I, Christchurch filmmakers Rick Harvie and Jane Mahoney.
Dealing with myopia
Managing myopia in children is important from an early age.
In 1983, the typical onset of myopia (short sightedness) was at around 11 years old, however, by 2000 that had dropped to age eight.
Lifestyle and family history are the primary cause, with one or more myopic parent influencing the conditon in their child, explains Christchurch-based optometrist Nicola Boyce, of Anstice Optometrists.
“Lifestyle causes are influenced by low levels of outdoor activity, low levels of light exposure and prolonged near tasks, such as reading and gaming on portable devices.”
Management is important. Increasing myopia can lead to serious eye health problems in the future, she adds. “As a child’s dependency on glasses increases, it can reduce their ability to participate actively in sports and other activities, which can lead to other social anxieties.”
Nicola says small adjustments will help slow down the myopia lifestyle creep. “Do an outdoor activity every day, no matter how low level, and book in for an annual eye test.”

Capit o
As the weather fines up, the need to be more sun smart increases.
One of the basics is a hat, or for many people a baseball-style cap. The origins of the baseball cap date back to about 1860, when the American amateur baseball team Brooklyn Excelsiors wore headwear with a visor to shade their eyes and obtain better vision in dazzling sunlight. The caps soon became popular in America, the design evolving in the 1940s with added ventilation holes and longer brims for better shielding faces from the sun.
The design hasn’t changed much since then, however the cap has transitioned from being just a sports accessory to a contemporary fashion icon.
These days, celebrities, artists and all manner of people don them, complete with logos and fashion brands. They’ve become an all-yearround accessory, to shelter your face from sun, wind, and rain, keep your hair in place, and add a touch of style to your outfit.

Experience
as a platform for change
Change occurs thanks to those determined and inspired, and Christchurch teenager Annabell Young, stands as an example of this.
Despite living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, Annabell took action, overcoming ongoing challenges, to become the Community Award winner at the 2024 Canterbury GirlBoss Awards.
The annual awards recognise the achievements of young women who defy stereotypes and inspire others. The awards range from STEM and innovation to community and inclusion, recognising those creating change towards a brighter future.
Annabell created the Garden of Glamour, an online ball that can be enjoyed from anywhere. Born with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, she lives with chronic pain, joint dislocations, missed school days, and has endured multiple surgeries. One of her most heartbreaking moments was missing out on her school ball. As a result, Annabell took matters into her own hands and created an online ball accessible for those in any condition.
“Formals are a really special high school experience,” she says. “Realising the lack of accessibility, and not being able to attend any school balls myself, drove me to create an inclusive experience for everyone.”
Winning the award in late August 2024 is not Annabell’s
only claim to fame. At just 18 years of age, she has already made a significant impact on many young women throughout New Zealand.
Alongside her Gardens of Glamour project, Annabell is an ongoing advocate for better support and accessibility for young people with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, and similar conditions.
A youth representative on the Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome New Zealand Committee, she’s also the former secretary of the Christchurch Foundation and Youth Philanthropy New Zealand’s Generation Give programme, where she played a key role in raising $8000 for community programmes.
Valued by local leaders, businesses, and community members, her work made her a worthy recipient of the award, organisers say.
“I just want to make sure other people don’t have to go through what I have,” explains Annabell.
Annabell does not let Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome define her, instead setting her on a path to inspire other young women to realise they can overcome challenges and make a di erence.
Establishing a platform for change, her work has provided joy and inclusion to those who are often left out, proving that neither age nor health barriers can stand in the way of making a significant impact.

R hinking weight loss after 40
A leading Australian nutritionist says rest is the key to weight loss for women over 40.
In a move that redefines conventional weight loss strategies for women over 40, Gold Coast-based naturopath and yoga teacher Carly Gallagher has unveiled her innovative “rest-based” approach to metabolic health. She says that conventional wisdom about weight loss often falls short for women over 40, because it doesn’t account for the hormonal changes a ecting metabolism.
She has launched her own comprehensive 12-week programme, designed specifically for women over 40 who are seeking a logical, yet unconventional shift in their weight loss strategies. “Our programme focuses on working with the body’s natural rhythms, not against them,” Carly explains. “We incorporate smart, specific exercises that prioritise recovery while also providing a nutrition plan that ‘rests’ the metabolism from inflammatory foods and excessive carbohydrates.”
Her paradigm-shifting methodology comes in response to recent trends indicating that many women in this age group find themselves trapped in the relentless cycle of the ‘eat less, exercise more’ mindset, believing it to be the only path to shedding unwanted kilograms.
Carly says that this approach can inadvertently shut
down their metabolism, particularly after the age of 40.
“The magic happens when I show them how to eat the right way — nourishing their bodies with the right foods and achieving the right macronutrient balance, while exercising just enough to stimulate their metabolism without overworking it,” she says. “It’s about finding that sweet spot where the body feels safe enough to release excess weight.
“That’s when we see real, lasting results. It’s not about deprivation; it’s about working smarter, not harder.”
Her approach challenges other paradigms by focusing on strategic rest — both in exercise and nutrition.
It emphasises an holistic “rest-based” approach, featuring:
• smart, specific exercises that prioritise rest and recovery
• avoiding the stress of over-exercising
• a nutrition plan focused on “resting” the digestion and metabolism
• hormone-balancing strategies that work with the body’s natural rhythms, rather than against them.
“Importantly, we’ve designed this approach to fit into real life, allowing women the freedom to socialise and enjoy life without overly restrictive rules,” she adds.

Visiting any medical specialist gives rise to numerous questions about what lies ahead.
The team at STRIDE Orthopaedics pride themselves on seeing patients quickly, with thorough consults to minimise patients’ concerns. “We triage referrals based on a patient’s symptom severity, condition, and their likelihood to need intervention. This allows us to see patients who need us as quickly as we can,” says Dr Ramez Ailabouni. “We o er a specialist clinic where we aim to see urgent referrals within three weeks and semi urgent patients within six weeks. More routine conditions can sometimes wait up to three months.
“For undi erentiated patients with ACC cover, we o er a Nurse Practitioner clinic where they can be reviewed within 1-2 weeks to establish a diagnosis and action treatment. For the cost conscious who are struggling and want to know what their options are and optimise any non-surgery treatments, a review with a specialist trained nurse practitioner is available for $155.”
Dr Ailabouni says patients often have the same questions. Here are some of the answers:
WHAT WILL IT COST?
The average costs for private orthopaedic care vary. ACC frequently covers many costs associated with consultations for specialist care and a large portion of imaging. Insurance companies cover care as per specific policies. For self-funding, the average costs for an assessment with a specialist surgeon can vary between $300-450. Imaging costs are separate to this.
Surgery costs are highly variable, and patients are advised on this upfront so there should be minimal to no surprises. For people who are struggling and just want to know what their options are, a review with a specialist trained nurse practitioner is available for $155.
WHY DO I STILL HAVE TO WAIT TO BE SEEN?
Both the public and private systems are under strain. Even in the private sector, most specialists receive more referrals than they have capacity to see, leading to long wait times.
STRIDE sees as many patients as it can in a timely manner.
I HAVE AN INJURY. CAN I BE SEEN PRIVATELY?
Yes, for most things you can. If you have had an injury, you should get an ACC claim by visiting your GP/NP or physiotherapist. With an ACC claim, you can be referred to and reviewed by a specialist in private. Some circumstances are best managed in the public hospital, such as severe broken bones and multiple concurrent injuries.
I’M FROM OUT OF TOWN, DOES THAT MATTER?
Getting care locally is the ideal for most patients, however there can be long waiting times to receive specialist care in your own town. Also, patients frequently travel if there is a specific operation or service they need or want that is not locally available. We regularly see patients who are from out of town. If you are an ACC patient, ACC can help with travel costs.
WHAT ARE PHONE CONSULTATIONS?
Virtual consultations, be it via telephone, video or a combination, can maximise convenience for patients. We don’t use them for the first clinical consultation or when there is an unresolved question that needs an examination to answer. We use them to discuss results, and with carefully selected out-of-town and remote patients after surgery where we can obtain clinical examination from a local provider such as a physiotherapist.
CAN I SELF-REFER FOR REVIEW?
We strongly recommend you initially see your primary care team for a referral. We do accept self referrals, reviewing such requests to see if we can actually help. Some providers (ACC and insurance companies) require a primary care referral.

Pamper Pedicure
A waterless pedicure, also known as a medical pedicure or Medi Pedi, is a perfect blend of podiatry and luxury nail salon experience.
Soaking feet can make your skin more fragile and pedicure basins can harbour waterborne pathogens. Avoid those nasties and get a full pampering experience with the expert team at Nail Creative Co.
You’ll discover the lush studio on Wairakei Road in Bryndwr, where Jamecia Karu works as the dedicated pedicure specialist. She o ers a variety of waterless pedicures, cosmetic toenail reconstructions, non-invasive ingrown toenail bracing and builder gel manicures. She’s an internationally certified nail technician with ITEC accreditation.
“We’re a nail salon, but my passion is helping people to restore their feet,” Jamecia says.
She chose to specialise in these services as she felt there was a gap in the market – while there are many di erent pedicure services available in Christchurch, very few take a more medical approach.
“I came from a spa background and that was the one treatment that no one really wants to do. It’s just redefining a pedicure – kind of like marrying podiatry and a nail salon together so you get the best of both worlds.”

cuisine breakfasts Egg-cellent
Eggs are a great source of protein, are packed with vitamins and minerals, and make a favourite breakfast or brunch dish for many New Zealanders.
Hard boiled, soft boiled, fried, scrambled, poached or in an omelette, eggs are such a versatile food choice that it is hard to go past them. A large 50g hen’s egg contains approximately 78 calories, 5g of fat, less than 1g carbohydrate, 6g of protein, and 147mg of choline, which supports memory and mood. The most common egg colours are brown and white, although other breeds such as the South American Araucana chickens will lay green eggs. The gene that causes the green (and sometimes blue) egg colour results from a retrovirus that became part of the chicken’s DNA many years ago.
A poached egg on whole-wheat toast makes a delicious meal at any time of day, hard-boiled they’re a great snack or lunch box treat, and if you enjoy scrambled eggs, try adding spinach and a bit of cheese for a healthful, filling dish. If you’re a fan of Eggs Benedict, head to page 45 and try our Eggs Royale recipe.
There’s magic in the old and magic in the new!
Our new menu is “a wonderful mixture of old and new”. We have successfully combined the two to bring you a harmonious blend of delicious traditional and modern dishes.

Eggs Royale
This recipe (also known as Eggs Halifax) can be served so many ways, depending what greens are in season, for example asparagus is a go-to from September through to December. Try wilted spinach for Eggs Florentine, salmon and spinach for Eggs Norwegian, or no greens at all for traditional Eggs Benedict. If you enjoy mushrooms with your eggs, then maybe try Eggs Hussarde, which is basically a Benedict with the addition of marchand de vin sauce (a red wine reduction with mushrooms and demi-glace).
A classic breakfast, based on the traditional favourite Eggs Benedict, the key ingredient is hot smoked salmon.
The Phat Duck Brew, Bar & Kitchen is serving delicious breakfasts from 10am. Indulge in bacon, eggs and toast for just $12, and add a coffee for only $3 extra. Drop in for a remarkable dining experience at The Phat Duck.
360 West Street, Allenton, Ashburton P. 03 3077032
www.phatduck.co.nz
Serves 2
Preparation time: 15 mins | Cooking time: 5 mins
Ingredients
• 200g hot smoked salmon
• 2 English mu ns, split and toasted
• 1 Tbsp white wine vinegar
• 4 free range eggs
• Dill to garnish
Method
Lemon Hollandaise:
• 2 Tbsp lemon juice
• 4 egg yolks free range
• 150g unsalted, clarified butter
• 1 Tsp lemon zest
1. To make the hollandaise, add to a food processor the zest, juice, and egg yolks and whizz for a minute, then very slowly pour in the clarified butter. Add salt and pepper to taste. Keep in a jar with a lid, and store in a cool place, but not the fridge.
2. Bring a medium sized pot of warm water to the boil. Turn the heat down to low so there are no bubbles and add the vinegar. Crack the eggs into the pot and cook for approximately 3 minutes, or to your liking.
4. Place the mu ns on a plate, and add a layer of flaked smoked salmon, discarding the skin.
5. Top with a poached egg, hollandaise sauce, dill, and a grind of black pepper.
All ways, all day
If you enjoy eggs, there are dozens of ways to prepare and serve them, aside from the usual options. For variety, try some of these:
Sunny side up: Eggs slow cooked in a frying pan until the egg white is set, but the yolk remains slightly runny. The ‘sunny side’ refers to the plump yellow/orange yolk, which resembles a sun.
Basted: Similar to sunny side up eggs, but basted eggs are cooked on top by spooning warm butter or oil over the top of the yolk.
Over easy eggs: Cooked in a pan until the white is set, and then flipped to cook the yolk side. Over easy eggs di er from basted eggs, because the top of the egg is cooked by flipping the egg, rather than cooking it with butter or oil. The yolk remains a bit runny in an over easy egg.
Over hard eggs: Similar to over easy eggs with the exception of the yolk, which is cooked all the way through.
Fried eggs: Cooked in butter, fat, or oil, in a skillet until the egg is cooked on one or both sides. Fried eggs can be served over easy, over medium, over hard, or sunny side up, depending on how well done you like the yolk.
Baked eggs: Also known as ‘shirred eggs’, they’re baked in a flat dish like a ramekin or a mu n pan and then topped with herbs, cheese or vegetables.
Frittata: A baked, egg-based dish that includes herbs, vegetables, cheeses, and meat. Frittatas are usually served for breakfast or brunch.

Trailblazers in Indian cuisine
The 2020’s feature self-care, and that’s a lot about what we put in our bodies. The challenge is to remove the tricky additions that we love but don’t love us back yet retain the zingy and authentic flavours that give taste buds a fabulous workout too.
If eating clean is important, the great news is you don’t have to abandon your favourite Indian foods. “At MG Road Eatery our dishes are as close to authentic Indian cooking as you will find,” says owner Thomas Kurian. “We use no MSG, no added colouring, and almost no cream.”
Whether you are a purist seeking true Indian fare, have a young family seeking a tasty, nourishing treat, or need quality dining on a budget, the team has got you. There are fortnightly specials on the website, “We have just added biryani, and we have our popular Sunday Bu et which we post on Facebook,” says Thomas. MG Road is also Christchurch sweet lovers’ best-kept secret. The talented team creates a range of delicious desserts and special occasion cakes for in-house or togo. Open Tuesday – Sunday 11.30 until 8.30pm, a meal in or taken away will be the week’s culinary highlight. Host your next function, corporate get-together or party with MG Road Eatery, catering for up to 120 guests.

Local Keeping it
Staying “on top” in the hospitality industry has become much harder in recent times. So much depends on offering customers that little bit extra or something innovative to keep them coming back.
Brighton Beach House is one café and restaurant that has worked hard to develop a unique, casual “local” vibe which, coupled with contemporary food and exemplary service, has a great appeal for customers.
The café takes pride in the word “local”. Its mantra, says owner Donna Toon, is “Buy local, hire local and support local”. It holds fundraisers for local schools and organisations, employs local people and buys local products. The café is also a great venue for events–weddings, parties or anniversaries–with its picturesque location and multiple spaces indoors and outdoors. The team has extensive experience in managing and coordinating functions to ensure your day or evening event is a success.
Speaking of the innovative and di erent to keep customers returning for more, Brighton Beach House instituted its Collective Series of unforgettable degustation adventures. Coming up on 30 November is a seven-course meal in collaboration with Little Biddy gins from the Reefton Distilling Co. Each West Coast rainforest botanical gin flavour will be matched with a complementary course showcasing the talents of the restaurant’s chefs.

Award-winning b hingbeauties
Christchurch interior designer Georgia Langridge scooped the pool at the National Kitchen and Bathroom Association (NKBA) awards early in September.
In addition to winning the Supreme Bathroom Design Award with her Parisian Stay entry, Georgia, of Modi Design, won the DNKBA Silver Kitchen Design Award, DNKBA Silver Bathroom Design Award, and Canterbury Kitchen Design Recognition.
Judges described Parisian Stay as a nicely detailed bathroom with unique features, stunning materials and tones. A lovely space that walks the delicate line between masculine and feminine.
“There are so many incredible design details. The texture, the consistent use of metallics and the luxurious materials are all very successful in the space. The bath is an interesting and stunning feature, as is the giant walk-in shower. This designer has a very good understanding of bathroom design, they know how to define a space and we applaud the technical design,” they said.
“One particularly successful aspect is the way the space allows for communication and solitude; the zones are separate and at the same time connected, which allows for varying degrees of privacy.”

NKBA Executive O cer Rachael Kwok says though bathrooms may appear simple, they are challenging spaces to get right.
“It’s interesting; the bathroom is a deceptive space and there are many design pitfalls. Things our judges look out for include the placement of the toilet, how the tiles are lined up, whether the lighting is to code and the space is aesthetically pleasing and inviting. When done right, bathrooms can be so beautiful and have such wow factor. We are proud to award these designers for their excellent work in this challenging space,” said Rachael.
An indicator of both a well-chosen life and selfcare is owning furniture you love, tailored to both your taste and your dimensions.
By dimensions we don’t just mean the size of the room you are dressing, but your actual size. That seems impossible right?
A cursory Google indicates the era of hand-made furniture is over. The choices are mass produced, and one must fit oneself into the available o erings.
However, dig a little deeper and you will soon discover Canterbury’s own Ruru Furniture Manufactory, run by Andrew McGowan and his highly skilled team of artisans.
“Clients choose from our wide range of styles to create sofas, chairs, and ottomans to enhance their space and match their dimensions,” says Andrew.
The Ruru showroom contains dozens of suites and hundreds of fabrics to select from, and the team can access hundreds more fabrics.
“Our New Zealand-made, solid, long life, and reliable products are sold directly to clients. We have a lovely showroom you can visit, or we can work remotely with you. Our role is to create exactly what you want right here in our Bromley factory,” says Andrew.
“Our motto is ‘we make for you’”; a rare luxury indeed.
backyard
With essential privacy, comfort, and serenity in mind, fashion your own natural backyard escape.
Creating a private and inviting outdoor space greatly improves your overall well-being. In today’s fastpaced world, where daily routines can be hectic, having a tranquil area to retreat to can make all the di erence. A naturally inspired outdoor space that feels like an extension of your home allows you to relax, unwind, and enjoy moments of peace.
Privacy plays a crucial role in this. When you can step outside without feeling exposed, it’s easier to feel comfortable and fully immerse yourself in the natural surroundings. Using materials that blend seamlessly with nature, such as bamboo, eucalyptus, and brushwood fencing, local business Brustics creates serene environments that feel both welcoming and
harmonious. Marketing manager Zoe McVeigh explains that thoughtfully designed shelters like thatch gazebos and natural pergolas provide shade and comfort, making your outdoor area functional year-round.
Incorporating elements that encourage gatherings, like a cosy outdoor cooking space, can turn your backyard into a hub of warmth and connection. Ultimately, investing in your outdoor space isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about creating a sanctuary where you can truly enjoy your time.
Create your backyard sanctuary, no matter your surroundings. Contact the Brustics team to find out how.

MarkGarden A mini at home
An easy way to take some control over the cost of living and grow your good health at the same time is having your own mini market garden. Terra Viva’s Peter Worsp shares his expert advice.
Fruit and vegetables are high in Vitamins A, C, antioxidants, minerals, and fibre, for protection against cancer and heart disease.
A vegetable garden can be a highly decorative feature, whether it’s inground or in containers, raised beds, terracotta pots, or plastic pots inside vintage wooden crates.
Larger containers give more options. Use vertical space with trellis or netting to grow climbing beans, cucumbers, and tomatoes.
Use colourful flowering ornamentals that repel the ‘bad boys’ but attract the ‘goodies’ (marigolds, catnip, garlic, chrysanthemums, lavender).
WHY GROW YOUR OWN?
• Proximity and convenience.
• Control over the source and chemical treatment of veges, + zero ‘food miles’.
• Great mental health benefits. Studies show these range from combatting early-onset dementia to hyperactivity in children. The calming influence of the outdoors, physical handling of soil, and satisfaction were all pinpointed.
• Great way to connect children with nature (vegetables aren’t grown in supermarkets) Children generally have an inbuilt distrust of anything green and healthy, yet their mysterious thought processes persuade them to eat what they’ve grown themselves. Start them growing with the easy ones – cherry tomatoes, radishes, lettuces, strawberries.
• Minimises waste (how many bagged supermarket salad greens get binned?)
WHAT TO GROW
Remember, when God invented plants they were designed to grow so given reasonable conditions, success is easy. Grow the things you like best, that you use regularly, and need to be fresh.
Suggestions: the main herbs (basil, coriander, chives, parsley, mint, rosemary, thyme), lettuce, courgettes, strawberries, rhubarb, kūmara, beans, tomatoes, and rocket (transforms an ordinary salad into a culinary masterpiece).
Limited space? Avoid easily a ordable fruit and veges that don’t have to be ultra-fresh, such as spuds.
HOW TO GROW
Soil preparation is the key. Get 100% soil improvement by digging in good quality compost, sheep pellets, Real Blood & Bone, and OceanFert seaweed pellets. Use good soil for inground planting, or top quality potting mix for containers. Sunny positions work best, and use liquid fertilisers after planting for instant results. Water is vital. Water on set days both for continuity and regularity.

Herb
heaven
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme. Growing your own herbs can be one of the most satisfying forms of gardening.
You don’t need a large space, and they can be grown indoors or outside.
Herbs will add a touch of colour to your décor, and there are the obvious benefits of being able to snip them when needed to add flavour to culinary dishes.
If growing outdoors, try and find a spot near to your kitchen. If growing in pots, the best varieties are the low or dwarf varieties, such as parsley, chives, thyme, tarragon, basil, marjoram, oregano, and coriander.
TOP TIPS
• Use self-watering pots
• Find a potting mix with slow release fertiliser
• Grow in a sunny spot
• Don’t harvest until there are plenty of leaves
• Avoid cutting too much at one time, allow regrowth before each harvest

After 10 long years, 2023 saw the arrival of the all new, third generation L461 Range Rover Sport; the smaller, more nimble and sportier brother to the “King of the Road” Range Rover.
While generation one was essentially just a Discovery with a di erent body, generation two was a step up with a revised full aluminium build and larger body. So, the question remains, how does generation three compare? Boy does it ever. The new Sport now features on par comfort to the larger new Range Rover, with the same
Pivi-Pro tech/media, the same striking looks, and with all the benefits of being more nimble and responsive to justify the Sport name.

THIS CAR
STOPS TRAFFIC
First impressions count, and often it’s not our outfit that people see first, but the vehicle we arrive in. Turning heads is Toyota’s modern C-HR Limited Hybrid, and Metropol Deputy Editor Nina Tucker took it to the city for a day.
My wishlist typically consists of a Chanel perfume, a new-season little black dress, and the latest Tony Bianco boots. After taking the Toyota C-HR Limited Hybrid for a trip to the city–and having to give it back–there is something new on the list. It’s this car.
I want nothing more than the C-HR as my spring adventure companion: smooth, quiet driving and luxury bundled into one. It creates a curious illusion, boasting all the features and space of an SUV, at a sport-like size that never felt too big. The sustainability considerations further solidify Toyota as a leader in this area, as its fifth-generation HEV system with Li-Ion battery reduces fuel consumption and emissions.
When it comes to the exterior, choose from 12 colours, including two-tone exterior options, and four grades including GR Sport, with a higher power 2.0L engine and AWD. Its crisp, angular design draws from European magnificence. I can see why it’s not taking long to sell. As I unlocked, the door handles popped out, an elegant touch, and close again once locked to become flush with the exterior.
Inside, it was sleek and chic. I was greeted with suede and leather fabric, most of which is made from recycled plastic, and a considered design. It felt like each aspect had been expertly placed. Typically, I juggle my phone, makeup bag, keys, and wallet in the cup holder or console between myself and my passenger. In the C-HR, the dedicated space below the infotainment system fits everything with ease. The tinted panoramic roof transported me to a movie set on the Amalfi Coast–it’s the car of summer dreams.
Complete luxury didn’t stop at the features. I thought the smoothness of the electric, hands-free boot and the heated steering wheel was impressive until I discovered the LED strip lights in the interior were customisable by colour. My mind was racing: date night? Red. Girls trip? Pink. For my ride, I chose yellow to match the sunny spring day.
Toyota’s latest infotainment tech was on display, the
12.3-inch multimedia screen with Android Auto™ and wireless Apple CarPlay® means connecting and accessing directions is e ortless. The taillight bar illuminates the Toyota C-HR logo when approaching with the smart key, like a welcome for the drive ahead.
While unashamedly, I was already in love thanks to the C-HR’s good looks, the safety features took it to a new level of desire.
Toyota’s Safety Sense package already leads the pack, yet the C-HR does one better. From the automatic handbrake and motorcycle detection to the pre-collision system and self-parking abilities for all those tight spaces that make me nervous, this vehicle takes any fear–big or small–out of driving.
The ‘driver inattention detected’ reminder captured my attention, literally. It subtly notifies when the focus shifts from the road ahead for too long. So, whether it’s a distraction from the passenger seat or the excitement of those new shoes in the boot, the car will bring you back to focus.
What I truly love is it has all the features that matter in form and function, and none that don’t. Each one added to my driving experience in a completely uncomplicated way.
Driving has never been easier, or more luxurious.

Outside, the new Mustang features an edgier and more menacing stance with new scoops and accents and a new frown from those Tri-Bar LED headlights. The iconic Mustang tail lights are more deeply raked to complement the slightly longer swooping rear. All in all, the new seventh generation “stang” looks like it’s up to no good.
Inside, a new 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster display uses Unreal Engine 3D gaming style software to display a range of high-res graphics. The driver can also select from a variety of classic Mustang dials, including the classic 67, Fox Body cars and SVT Cobra dials from the early 00s.
Paired to that is a new 13.2-inch SYNC 4 centre screen which is angled towards the driver. Thanks to a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system and an increased level of quality, this is by far the most refined feeling and technologically advanced Mustang cabin to date. Under the bonnet, the mighty 5L Coyote V8 is back with, a 10-speed automatic transmission, and a dual intake throttle body induction system with structural upgrades, plus an upgraded oil pan, allowing higher rates of airflow to minimise induction loss.
Ford Mustang Program Chief Engineer Laurie Transou, who I was fortunate to chat with via video conference, says the V8 is an integral part of the Mustang’s past and its future. “The Mustang V8 is always met with tonnes of enthusiasm. We are very strategic about how we plan the next V8 engine, an element which is very important for the Mustang. As long as we can balance our feet, we will continue to o er a V8,” says Laurie.
First up was a spirited drive through Adelaide’s hills to The Bend Motorsport Park. The Mustang GT’s updated fourth-generation Coyote V8 pulls strongly and thanks to that 10-speed automatic transmission, which keeps the torque curve seamless and linear, it never seems to let up in terms of power. Plus, its active-valve quad performance exhaust system delivers a dose of bellowing V8 thunder.
Ford claim the seventh generation Mustang is “the most track focused yet”, and after a few laps of The Bend Motorsport Park, I certainly agree. It’s a hard charger with the handling prowess to complement its ability to devour the straights.
When the time came to visit the skid pan, the Mustang’s optional electronic “drift brake” was put to the test.
The drift brake overrides the stability control system, locking the rear brakes and provides maximum rear braking when the driver pulls the handbrake. The end result is you can perfect handbrake turns with considerable ease, though best leave this to the track.
A dark horse
Another treat. We also experienced the new Mustang Dark Horse, the Mustang we “never saw coming”. The limited run Dark Horse features more power from the 5L Coyote V8 thanks to modified piston connecting rods. You can also option a TREMEC six-speed manual transmission, Recaro bucket seats, a blue gear lever, blue stitching, enhanced cooling, larger brakes, larger sway bars, a rear sub-frame from the Shelby GT500, more aggressive aero and styling cues, and a new menacing looking forward facing pony emblem.
Ford today test drive
The six-speed box features close ratios, and each shift is a short, satisfying throw. Its savage ability to put the power down is quite something, with a zero to 100kph time of 3.7 seconds.
The Dark Horse gives one the confidence to brake later and get on the power sooner. The extra tweaks underneath mean this is probably the sharpest handling Mustang to-date. Leaving The Bend, we took the Mustang GT Convertible for a cruise back to Adelaide. It feels just as tight and together as the GT Fastback, with the added bonus of hearing that Coyote V8 even more thanks to having the roof o .
While the Dark Horse was a highlight, the seventh-generation Ford Mustang’s abilities to serve up acceleration which can rearrange your fillings, and handling prowess usually the preserve of the most tactile European sports cars was phenomenal. This also came with all the drama and theatre we have come to expect from this marque. Basically, the new Mustang is a mighty impressive continuation of Ford’s most coveted performance car. This pony has “well and truly bolted” and we’re dead keen to catch it again on Canterbury roads soon.
