other languages, mainly European in origin. Adding to that now are digital era abbreviations, common usage dictates, and a general lack of word knowledge and appropriate usage.

For example, recently I came across the word ‘lush’ used with a story inviting people to visit an inner city bar. Lush to many people today is a form of plush, yet for older generations it is also a term for a person who drinks too much, making it inappropriate use in that context.

Many words have their origins in history, and aren’t necessarily relevant today, or have evolved with new meanings. Once, the word gay meant being happy, but for 60 plus years, it has been commonly used as another word for homosexual.

New words are being invented all the time, and old words are being made redundant. We talk di erently to children and adults, and writing is the same; di erent words and terminolgy for various ages and topics, including new generation words. That aside, those words still need to be appropriate in their contextual setting.

The continuing decline of etymology as a linguistic discipline is no surprise, yet we should still be aware of the variety of true meanings of words we use. If we don’t know their proper contextual meaning, how can we expect others to?

Enough said, enjoy the read. You’ll see a smoker is not just someone pu ng on a cigarette anymore; it’s also a delicious form of cooking.

From renovation projects to 250-build housing developments, Vincent (Vinny) Holloway and Oliver (Oli) Hickman have spent the last decade spearheading a colonial housing revival. Their company, Brooksfield, has built about 600 classic homes in and around Christchurch in the decade since the catastrophic earthquakes. Renowned for their heritage-inspired developments, designed by British architect Ben Pentreath, the duo have now expanded into Auckland.

Co-founders and directors of Brooksfield, Vinny and Oli combined their strengths a decade ago to follow their love of classic architecture; the former a qualified builder, and the latter a successful realtor. Their ethos is simple: build classic houses featuring the best of architecture from the past, with today’s quality materials and conveniences.

“Most people in New Zealand want to buy a character house,” explains Vinny. “Our builds are modern versions of older homes.”

Both love classic Victorian, Edwardian and Georgian style housing, and being true to their natures, both live in gorgeous character homes. For Oli, home is a renovated 1923 colonial revival home designed by notable Canterbury architect Heathcote Helmore.

“I love the symmetry of it,” he expains. “It’s well proportioned, with good bones, and lets lots of light in. It’s unique to Christchurch because of the architect.”

Vinny’s home is more a villa style, again sympathetically renovated into a family home, while retaining all its original character.

colour scheme, with new landscaping to o set its beauty.

Key to all the team’s projects is an architect known for creating heirtage-inspired designs for the royal family. “We strictly use a classical architect called Ben Pentreath, who’s based in the UK,” says Vinny. “He does new, classical architecture, or what you could call new traditional architecture.”

As the pair explain, it’s just using the principles of Georgian or Victorian architecture in modern day houses, and taking the time and materials to make them stand the test of time.

“Classicism has been prominent in architecture for 3000 years, and it is still beautiful,” says Oli, referencing the architecture of ancient Greece and Rome as far back as the fifth and third centuries respectively.

“It’s not just about the money; we have a passion for what we are doing rather than knocking up houses as quickly as possible as some companies do,” he adds.

Their focus is on creating homes that are a ordable and “around the median house price” as well as being beautiful and lasting. In Christchurch, and now Auckland, that also means enhancing rather than disturbing a neighbourhood’s feel.

“Classicism has been prominent in architecture for 3000 years, and it is still beautiful.”

That love of character architecture is something they share with many thousands throughout New Zealand, and is one of the reasons behind their drive to “make Christchurch beautiful again”.

Currently they have 25 developments under way, equating to 178 houses. “As a developer, it is about improving the land in a sense; about taking a $700,000 section, putting five houses on it, and realising a value of $4million,” says Vinny.

“On a personal level, it is about building beautiful homes to last. Classic style builds tend to not only be renovated; they’re also repurposed on a bigger scale.”

On the subject of repurposing, the Brooksfield team is doing just that with well-known Christchurch heritage building Eliza’s Manor, turning it from boutique hotel and restaurant into its company headquarters and o ces. The manor is a perfect example of repurposing, Vinny points out, adding that is due to its classic beauty rather than today’s modernist architecture.

One of the guiding principles of modernist architecture is that form follows function, and a building’s purpose is paramount to the design, taking precedence over beauty.

Classicism combines beauty with functionality, which is why the manor is a prime candidate for repurposing, and has been for decades. “Over the years it has been a home, hotel, boarding house, hospital, and now it is becoming an o ce,” says Vinny. The manor will soon resume its original creamy yellow heritage

Single and two-storey heritage homes with sympathetic garden design, stylish neutral interior finishes, solar power wherever possible, and architecture that suits the neighbourhood is the order of the day.

“All of our houses have historical precedents,” says Vinny. “We don’t make it up, we actually take elements from existing buildings and use them. We solely build in timber and brick, proven materials.”

Every city has its own character, with Georgian, Edwardian, and Victorian architecture plentiful in Christchurch, yet not a lot of Georgian in Auckland.

Importantly, the homes and gardens are designed while considering what it would actually be like to live in them, and in the specific neighbourhoods they occupy. “They’re all homes we would want to live in ourselves,” Vinny and Oli add.

Lupton

When Jaimee headed back to work full-time after giving birth to baby Noa, she called on the help of a full-time nanny, and she knows that is a reality many don’t have. “I wouldn’t want people thinking I’m doing it all by myself, because that’s not the reality. We put so much pressure on women to do everything all at once, and succeed at everything.”

This is the tune that Jaimee sings wherever she goes. In business, she empowers women in every move made. “As far as we’ve come, women are still so underrepresented when it comes to foundership and higher levels of leadership,” Jaimee explains. She o ers advice, connections, and support to others looking to make waves as she did, even putting a friend heading into the beauty industry in touch with a previous manufacturer.

“There really is room for everyone.”

Jaimee is the face behind the iconic pink MONDAY Haircare bottle, yet she has founded a collection of beauty brands including Osāna Naturals, Châlon Paris, and Being.

Jaimee describes MONDAY as “cult haircare without the cult price tag”, and each brand strongly focuses on targeted, nourishing formulas with a luxe feel.

Such a drive meant launching three brands in three months, “and Noa is only three months old.” The beauty of it all being her own is the ability to work from home, even if that means Noa in the bouncer under the desk while Jaimee or Nick join business calls. “We’re finding the new normal and just trying to balance it all,” she explains, plus the grateful support from an excited grandmother just up the road. Jaimee tells me she has around 15 brands in the pipeline, and won’t be giving the beauty industry a break anytime soon, with a team who have a constant passion to find the “white space” within it.

“Owning a business is a lot of sacrifice,” Jaimee admits. Work never ends, “which is amazing, but it means I’ve missed birthdays, engagements, the birth of friends’ babies, and time with family and friends.” It’s a hard pill to swallow. “I have to focus on what I’m building and make peace with the things I’m missing out on.”

“I want my daughter to know she’s just as capable as her male counterparts. It’s important to me that she sees what dad can do, mum can do too.”

Jaimee was destined for entrepreneurship from the early days. Between jobs like babysitting as a teenager, “I was always convincing my parents to order di erent things online for my business ideas,” she laughs.

Knowing she would reach that goal one day, it wasn’t until she met her partner, entrepreneur and businessman Nick Mowbray, that the idea began to fructify in her mind.

“I like to say I went to the University of Nick Mowbray for six years,” Jaimee says, and alongside a strong background in brand building and marketing, she sold six months’ worth of MONDAY stock in six weeks. “We were being called “liquid gold” by the press,” Jaimee recalls. Her team knew they were onto something wonderful, but no one could have predicted such an overwhelming response.

That looks like 20 major beauty awards, features in the likes of Vogue and Forbes, and stock sold in almost 40 countries inside the doors of over 70,000 retailers. Huge moments aside, Jaimee finds joy in the little wins, such as seeing someone she admires using MONDAY, or the people she meets amongst her hectic schedule who know exactly what the brand is.

It would appear that Jaimee has very little time to catch her breath. Somehow, she does. Between back-to-back meetings, product launches, and future planning, Jaimee squeezes in pilates, time with friends and family, and constant cuddles with Noa. “Spending time with my daughter is by far my favourite thing to do.” Considering work a hobby, although that “sounds very uncool”, Jaimee says, means she can pursue her passions in beauty, wellness, business, and innovation daily.

It’s all worth it for the example she’s setting for Noa. “I want my daughter to know she’s just as capable as her male counterparts. It’s important to me that she sees what dad can do, mum can do too.” Jaimee laughs that there is no pressure for Noa to pursue entrepreneurship, a simple wish that she follows her dreams and works hard for them, “although her dad might feel di erently.”

Jaimee’s fertility-aiding charity

Courageous and strong describes Jaimee and Nick, because it was far from an easy road to parenthood. Infertility struggles became IVF treatment, and a pregnancy before a tragic loss at 24 weeks. It was isolating. “It’s like a club that no one wants to be a part of,” Jaimee says. “Gingernut” and her parents are now the reason for better outcomes for others going through the same harrowing pain.

Gingernut’s Angels was founded in early 2024, to ease some of the burden for families in similar situations facing massive medical bills to achieve a pregnancy. “It breaks my heart to think that how much money someone has in the bank would determine whether or not they get to be a parent.”

Fertility grants yet to be announced will receive a total $680,000 boost thanks to the Gingernut’s Angels community just this year. “It’s been overwhelming, people have been so receptive and kind,” Jaimee says. “Total strangers’ receptiveness to Gingernut’s Angels is a testament to the power of that collective support and our worthwhile cause.”

That history meant Noa’s pregnancy was emotional, challenging, and scary, Jaimee explains. “I tried to focus on how lucky and grateful I was to be carrying her and to be her mum,” she remembers, as she pushed those fearful thoughts aside. Now, in a happy baby bubble, with business only growing, Jaimee is becoming a powerhouse in every sense of the word.

Where Art and Canterbury Meet

ARTSCENE Harmonious Nonsense: Alexandra Hope

Alexandra Hope Watson is a high flyer - literally. You may have seen her beaming down at you from a University of Canterbury (UC) billboard, emboldened behind her the words “MUSIC” and “AEROBATICS”, writes Metropol’s Joseph Harper.

Acurious juxtaposition, one that describes two of the young composer and concert singer’s passions. Alexandra began flying at 16, around the same time she began taking advanced courses at UC. She is now completing a commercial pilot’s licence and has won national titles in aerobatics - a discipline described as gymnastics in aeroplanes. Think barrel rolls and loop-de-loops. Alexandra explains her hobby to me over a hot chocolate at The Arts Centre. “It sounds so extravagant, but it’s really just like anything else.” I get the feeling she’s understating it.

Right now, along with studying toward her doctorate in composition, she’s hard at work readying A Magical Musical Mystery, a dreamlike musical based on the nonsense verse of Lewis Carroll. The piece is to be performed by Alexandra herself along with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, and has its world premiere on 28 September at The Piano. It’s a work the young composer and performer is particularly proud of. “I’ve seen a lot of musicals which have contributed to who I am. I wanted people to hear this poetry; to hear these songs.”

The dreamlike quality of the source material inspired Alexandrahow it lends itself to personal interpretations. “I love how your brain creates something that makes sense, like a dream.” She hopes her musical conjures this phenomenon for her audience. “The songs are woven together to create a consciousness. It’s like a puzzle - the music and lyrics intertwined.”

Lewis Carroll’s work has always appealed to Alexandra. “Everybody knows Alice in Wonderland. Everybody knows Lewis Carroll. I wasn’t changing anything, I was adding to them.” Bringing those words to life in music wasn’t a simple task. “They’re complex settings with lots of textures. I had to find ways for them to work together. It’s all about texture and timbre - and then finding places for the orchestra to be a big symphony was fun.”

Led by an all-women creative team, the orchestra will be conducted by Naomi Hnat, a former choir mate of Alexandra’s, returning from the United Kingdom for the show. The performance is a huge undertaking. Three singers, 20 songs, 33 instruments - all coming together in only two days of rehearsal. While the premiere is looming, it’s a challenge that Alexandra is relishing. “I’m more excited than nervous. It feels like I’m jumping into the deep end.”

IWhere Our Shadows Meet: a groundbreaking performance bridging worlds

n an era where storytelling has taken on myriad forms, Where Our Shadows Meet emerges as a poignant narrative that pushes the boundaries of language, communication, and connection.

Presented by the Isaac Theatre Royal (ITR) in collaboration with Equal Voices, this powerful production is a significant part of ITR’s new programming strategy, underscoring their commitment to diverse, inclusive, and innovative theatre.

At the heart of Where Our Shadows Meet lies the story of a father and daughter, separated not by distance, but by the chasm of language and experience. The daughter, in her quest for connection, retreats into a world of imagination, crafting a friend from bed sheets in an empty bedroom. Meanwhile, her father, grounded in the reality of his life, whispers reassurances to his infant daughter. The wall of photographs that maps out a life unfulfilled becomes a silent witness to their journey.

As the narrative unfolds, the boundaries between the imagined and the real begin to blur. What emerges is a vibrant, explosive world where the collision of two languages—spoken English and New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL)—creates a space for understanding, empathy, and love. This performance transcends

traditional storytelling by integrating physical theatre, live music, and a dual-language format, making it accessible and resonant for both deaf and hearing audiences, marketing manager Bianca Lindstrom says.

The experience has been lauded by experts and audiences alike for its innovative use of NZSL in theatre, with Richard Benge, MNZM of Arts Access Aotearoa, praising it as “the most innovative and collaborative use of NZSL anywhere in the New Zealand arts sector.” The physical storytelling has also received acclaim, with Dance Manchester describing it as “Physical Theatre at its storytelling best.”

The show’s impact on deaf audiences has been profound. Feedback from those who attended the premiere speaks to its emotional and powerful message. “A breathtaking performance,” said one deaf audience member, while another remarked on the show’s powerful message and how deeply it resonated with them. Where Our Shadows Meet represents a significant step forward in the Isaac Theatre Royal’s ongoing commitment to accessibility and inclusivity in the arts. It’s a testament to the power of theatre to bridge divides, create connections, and speak to the universal experiences of love and loss.

See two worlds meet on 27 and 28 August. Purchase tickets at ticketek.co.nz

The Chinese People’s Republic has repeatedly made its intentions clear in that it will invade Taiwan and take it by overwhelming force. It’s 2024 with Chinese Airforce jets in the air over Taiwan and the Chinese Army amassing on the Chinese Coast little more than 150km away. This looks like much more than a provocation; can all-out war be prevented?

Lynley Dodd’s legacy

One of New Zealand’s favourite children’s book writers, Dame Lynley Dodd DNZM, is gifting budding children’s writers the same gift that gave her a leg up.

he $30,000 Lynley Dodd Children’s Writers Award was inspired by a similar pivotal moment where a financial gift enabled Lynley to continue writing and make her name. She hopes to replicate that support, “The Bursary I received in the late 1970s gave me the vote of confidence I needed at just the right moment. I have always felt immensely grateful for such a life-changing piece of luck. Knowing what the win did for me, I have always thought how marvellous it would be to be able to do the same for another writer. At last, I have the opportunity to realise my dream.”

The award will go towards an author, annually, with an established identity in children’s literature and who demonstrates richness, range, and depth in their writing. The inaugural recipient is Whangarei-based children’s writer Janine Williams (J.L. Williams), who says it “will be life-changing”.

This act of generosity puts the Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi in a great position to annually recognise creators of children’s literature. Kaiwhakahaere/General Manager Jessica Palalagi says the backing “directly supports artists who do the crucial work of telling our stories to our tamariki across generations.”

With the curiosity of an anthropologist, she wittily comments on human and animal behaviour. Her mastery of oil paint is undoubted. She paints with deft sensitivity and a deep understanding of art. Joanna’s career spans many decades and stretches across both sides of the Tasman. In 2019 she was awarded the prestigious Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize.

In Behind the Scenes, Lucia Sidonio encapsulates the innocent whimsical nature of childhood and the relationship between adult and child. These artworks were painted during a recent year in France, living and working in Montpellier as a teacher, where she sought to reconnect with her French heritage.

Changes AHEAD

Companies Act reforms are planned for 2025, with Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Andrew Bayly leading the charge.

His plans include scrapping the requirement for company directors’ home addresses to be public on the Companies Register, allowing instead for another service address online, such as for their business or lawyer.

The aim is to better protect directors’ safety and privacy while still ensuring an address is provided for accountability, including from those owed money by the company.

The minister will introduce a bill to Parliament early next year to revamp the Companies Act 1993. Part of the revamp is also a proposal to require directors or general partners to verify their identities with a form of digital ID.

The bill will enable the Companies O ce to more accurately link individuals to the various entities they are associated with and display these connections on the register, making it easier for businesses, creditors and consumers to do their due diligence. It would also help law enforcement accurately identify people.

Behind the move is helping to combat “phoenixing”- a director setting up a new company with the intention of defeating the interests or creditors of the old company.

Members of the public will be able to provide feedback once the bill has been introduced to Parliament next year, and goes through the select committee process. Improved insolvency rules are also on the revamp radar.

Interest rates and banks

Wow, we have finally started to see some genuine competition and traction with the banks and their interest rates.

It’s felt like we have had a long journey with high interest rates post Covid-19, but in fact, it’s similar traction to what we all faced with our home lending 12 years ago, and when those rates started to drop, they did it quickly over the course of 18 months.

Finally, we are seeing some good news with the OCR (O cial Cash Rate) dropping to 5.25%. While this isn’t a big deal for some, it really does impact how the banks look at their interest rates. The flow on a ect is huge – both for home-owners and investors alike.

That leads into the next conversation – how long should I fix my lending for? Well, it’s di erent for everyone and depending on their situation, but most of our clients are leaning towards fixing for 1 year – 18 months.

It will give stability with repayments, and will hopefully have interest rates nice and low when they are due to refix again – gets you over the hump if you like.

As your mortgage adviser, we are receiving slightly lower rates than are advertised. And if you are looking to do a refinance to another bank, you will likely get a generous cash contribution as well – this is a great way to o set those rising insurance/rate costs.

I have longstanding relationships with all the banks across Canterbury and can negotiate on your behalf to get the very best deal for you. Better still, the banks pay for this service, it’s free for the customer. Get in touch if you want to have a confidential chat about your Interest Rates with your bank, there is nothing better than having control of your finances.

For lovers of beautiful clothes, there is nothing more exciting than new arrivals from their favourite brands.

Alison Donn, owner of Made in the Shade, is right there with them, unpacking and filling the store with irresistible new garments.

The iconic Anne Mardell bids her farewell with her closing collection for summer 2024, one that signifies the treasured local reign the designer has had. A wizard of textile utilisation and creating gorgeously flattering clothing, Anne’s designs hang proudly on the Made in the Shade racks.

New to the store, French-Canadian Claire Desjardins blends colour and texture, leaving beautifully cut styles, in everything from flowy blouses to fun gym leggings. Hailing from a background in abstract art, Claire’s designs are a breath of creativity.

To transition into spring styles, Blackstone’s latest champions natural fibres, for comfortable, breathable wear, while Canadian-designed Vassalli highlight white and navy shades, and their golf dress is a must-have. To flatter any figure, choose Bittermoon’s Carly dress, which Alison says is a forever favourite of her customers.

For those escaping to warmer weather, Alison suggests curating a travel wardrobe from Lisette’s latest collection. Comfortable, travel-ready styles in gorgeous neutrals make it an easy task.

Find your new wardrobe at Made in the Shade, with all winter garments currently half price. Alison encourages all to visit her new Facebook page for the latest updates or contact her on 027 412 0086.

BOOST your facial collagen & ELASTIN

Ageing can cause our face shape to change, as the bone, muscle and fat lose density while the skin becomes thinner and weaker because of collagen loss.

Fat may no longer be evenly distributed and may shift downward, so that certain features like the cheeks lose volume while the lower part of the face may look fuller and heavier.

EMFACE™ is the new in-clinic treatment to be o ered by Skin Rejuvenation Clinic and it is a game changer.

EMFACE™ is the only device able to strengthen the facial “lifting” muscles, cosmetic medicine specialist Dr Brigid Lee says. It does this by using HIFES (highintensity facial electromagnetic stimulation) which strengthens the muscles and ligaments and combines it with

radiofrequency to boost collagen and elastin. The best part is it is painless, needle free and has no downtime.

Backed by clinical studies across 15 global research centres, EMFACE™ causes a 30% increase in muscle tone, 37% reduction in wrinkles, 26% increase in collagen, and 23% more lift. It does all of this with no needles, no pain, no bruising and no swelling. The treatments are only four, 20-minute treatments at least 5-7 days apart and the optimal results roll in at the 6-12 week mark after the final treatment.

EMFACE™ is safe for any body type, BMI, skin type, and skin tone. There is no right age to start treatments with EMFACE™, but patients who are healthy, well-hydrated, and at a stable weight tend to enjoy the best results.

Treating antenatal depression

Vitamins and minerals have been used by University of Canterbury (UC) researchers to alleviate symptoms of depression during pregnancy.

Antenatal depression a ects some 32 to 45 million women globally; it increases the pregnancy risks and complications in birth and newborns, and has been linked with emotional, behavioural, and developmental problems in children.

PhD graduates, Dr Hayley Bradley and Dr Siobhan Campbell, along with Professor Julia Rucklidge from the Faculty of Science, looked to use a safe and accessible alternative to psychological therapy and antidepressants, which often have significant barriers such as cost, access and side-e ects.

Professor Rucklidge says the research, using micronutrients (high doses of vitamins and minerals), produced positive and promising outcomes. “Overall, 75% of the participants were in remission in their symptoms of depression both in the micronutrient group and placebo group; however, 69% of those in the micronutrient group identified themselves as much to very much improved, compared with

only 39% taking the placebo. “The clinicians rated the participants on micronutrients as having greater change in their global functioning (how well someone is coping with day-to-day life) compared with those on placebo. Sleep also improved more on micronutrients.”

Blood tests during the pregnancy suggested that increased micronutrient intake resulted in meaningful increases in vitamins B12 and D, and there were fewer women developing vitamin C deficiency for those in the micronutrient group compared with the placebo group.

An exciting finding of the research was the low rate of side e ects from the micronutrients.

“Both groups reported similar side e ects, showing the micronutrients themselves have little to no side e ects, whereas anti-depressant side e ects can include nausea, insomnia, and loss of appetite among other symptoms–which can be another barrier to taking medication,” says Professor Rucklidge.

The next step is to encourage independent replication to confirm the findings and get one step closer to accessible alternative treatment for antenatal depression.

Unlockhealthierageing

Life expectancy is slowly increasing, and scientific discoveries are allowing those all around to us to lead lives almost double the length of those before them. It is a great feat, yet an equally terrifying thought. Will that life be filled with doctor’s appointments, loss of loved ones, mental deterioration, and a body slowly giving up?

Auckland’s Greg Macpherson disagrees. To that end, the pharmacist, technologist, entrepreneur, and author of Harnessing the Nine Hallmarks of Aging, has spent years in the health field, looking into the biotechnology of ageing.

Now a globally recognised expert on healthy ageing, Greg’s new book, Age Less is a cheat sheet to the secrets and science of doing so slower and healthier. The five fundamental layers of a healthy ageing journey, exercise, nutrition, sleep, social connection, and mental well-being are dissected.

He hopes the book will inspire others to see ageing in a new light, where getting older is “no longer feared as an unrelenting journey of decay and ill-health.”

That said, it won’t tell us how to achieve fewer wrinkles. Instead, it focuses on the important: ageing with vitality and energy, so that we can enjoy more quality time with those we love. Inside is a plethora of lifestyle shifts we can make towards a longevity mindset to increase our health span. Find the hacks for preventative wellness, wearable health trackers, and the science behind health crazes such as water immersion and sauna bathing. Focus on your purpose and embrace it. Find the people, the activities, and the work that light you up.

“I want to challenge readers to imagine a life where we don’t fear getting older but instead look forward to a long, healthy life – one that gives us many opportunities to fulfil our potential for the whole of our life,” Greg adds.

Metropol has two copies of Age Less to give away, so our readers can unlock an energised life.

To enter, email deputy.editor@metros.co.nz with the subject line Age Less Giveaway, your name and contact number.

Winners must be able to pick up their copy from Metropol’s Riccarton o ce. Entries close 6 September 2024.

2 tips life back to take your

You guessed it, physical activity. With the most benefits to lifespan and mental and physical health, plus a reduction in risk factors for ageing-related chronic diseases, an active person’s mortality rate will reduce by 30 to 60 per cent compared to a nonactive person. Drawing from the shift towards a more inactive world with cars, technology, and ultra-smart appliances, Greg says “Nothing else compares to exercise – no drug, supplement or diet comes close.”

To live your best life, regular exercise is a must. Aim for 30 minutes daily, and a mix of moderate to highintensity activity, as well as flexibility and balance training. In short, move your body. “It’s essential to move regularly and cut down on prolonged sitting.”

Feeding your microbiome is a fascinating discussion in Age Less. Gut bacteria are crucial for overall health and longevity, and as we age, so do they.

“If the balance of gut bacteria is o , it can lead to inflammation in our bodies, a process known as ‘inflammageing’, which raises our risk of chronic diseases and speeds up ageing.” Invest in a diet rich in high-fibre foods, including fruits, vegetables, seeds, beans, and nuts.

bowel cancer drugs Relief as new announced

Years of advocacy from Bowel Cancer New Zealand (NZ) and other groups calling for new bowel cancer drugs has led to a funding from Pharmac for two new medicines, cetuximab (Erbitux) and pembrolizumab (Keytruda).

This is fantastic news and acknowledgement of all the hard mahi by our bowel cancer community. We celebrate this milestone while also acknowledging all those who bravely fought alongside us and aren’t here today,” says Rebekah Heal, general manager of Bowel Cancer NZ.

In July 2024, the government boosted Pharmac funding, with an extra $604 million guaranteed over the next four years towards 54 new drugs, including the first bowel cancer medicines funded in over 20 years. “This will help relieve some of the enormous financial burden so many bowel cancer patients are shouldering,” says Rebekah. “It’s also evident just how underfunded Pharmac has been until now.”

Keytruda will be available from 1 October as a funded treatment option for Lynch Syndrome bowel cancer patients. A date has yet to be set for cetuximab, although it was listed as one of the drugs to be funded in the next year.

While cetuximab will be funded, this does not currently include bowel cancers with the BRAF mutation. Bowel Cancer NZ wants to see funding extended and expedited for patients with this mutation, like Blair Vining, who passed away in 2019.

Cancer advocate Melissa Vining says, “For many patients like Blair with a BRAF mutation, this is heartbreaking news. Facing an aggressive form of cancer with no publicly funded drugs available leaves you with several choices: leave NZ to obtain treatment in Australia, fundraise for the treatment, sell your home if you have one or wait to die knowing that if you lived in a comparable country like Australia, your treatment would be funded. This takes an incredible toll on many New Zealanders who simply deserve a fair chance at treatment.”

This progress in funding bowel cancer drugs is encouraging, but there’s still more to be done. Bowel Cancer NZ continues to advocate for bevacizumab (Avastin), which has been on the Medicine Waiting List since 2010.

Bowel cancer symptoms include:

• Bleeding from the bottom or seeing blood in the toilet after a bowel motion

• Change of bowel motions over several weeks without returning to normal

• Persistent or periodic severe pain in the abdomen

• A lump or mass in the abdomen

• Tiredness and loss of weight for no particular reason

• Anaemia

Prime Rib low & slow

Key to succulent, flavoursome meats is the type of barbecue, smoker, or oven being used, the coals, sauces, marinades, rubs, herbs and spices, length of cooking, and temperatures. This recipe comes courtesy of BBQs & More, created to be cooked in its Big Green Egg barbecue. Add your own next level culinary creativity, specially tailored to your taste, before cooking.

Serve American style with sauces, cornbread, bourbon and co ee beans, and coleslaw, or New Zealand style with roughly chopped iceberg lettuce for crunch and palate cleansing, and balsamic and brown sugar macerated tomatoes for extra tanginess.

INGREDIENTS

2.5 – 4kg prime rib roast

1 Tbsp olive oil

METHOD

2.5 – 4 tsp flaky sea salt

Fresh cracked pepper, rubs, herbs & spices

Two hours before cooking, rub the roast all over with olive oil, chosen rubs, herbs and spices, and generously sprinkle with salt. Leave at room temperate for two hours.

Set the barbecue for indirect cooking at 177°C. Place the roast fat side down over the coals and cook until the internal temperature reaches 46°C, approximately 2 hours. Remove the roast and let rest.

Set the barbecue for indirect cooking at 260°C. Place the roast in and cook until the internal temperature is 55°C (about 10 minutes). Remove from barbecue, leave to rest for 10-30 minutes, slice, add salt and fresh pepper to taste, and serve.

Kitchen

Practical and pretty

couture

It’s like haute couture for your kitchen.

Think of it by comparing ready-to-wear and haute couture. Then, apply that to your kitchen. You could have a mug and saucer, or that mug could sit on a cloud. It’s going from an ordinary casserole dish to one in the shape of a tomato or pumpkin. Pique interest at dinner parties with pieces that excite through extravagant artistry or elegance.

Vegetable décor has served, literally, in kitchens for decades, assumed to have started in the 18th to 19th centuries across England and Europe. When one of my favourite designers, Jonathan Anderson, used a porcelain Asparagus Tureen as inspiration for a beaded Asparagus bag that walked the runway for Loewe’s Fall Winter 2024 collection, I was hooked. It’s a fascinating thing to play with reality and fantasy, and there is every reason to bring the garden inside and reinterpret it.

From t-out

to workout

Over recent years, we hear the word “pivot” used more and more in a business context. To pivot, is a strategic move a business can take to ensure it remains viable and profitable.

In rather tight economic times, such moves are crucial and Jim the Builder is one construction company that has taken this strategy to heart.

Normally specialising in residential builds, of late the company has undertaken an interior fit-out for a fitness centre and gym – Flex Fitness. “While it was not our usual gig, building is building,” says Jim Stenberg, Operations Director of Jim the Builder. “Flex Fitness moved to a new site in the heart of Riccarton and wanted a former commercial space converted to suit their needs. For them, a fit-out had to be of high quality and style— and that is exactly what they got.” That’s the trademark that has come to be associated with the Jim the Builder team, no matter the project.

Throughout the alteration phase, the builders worked around the fitness centre to allow them to keep trading as a 24/7 operation. “Since the original fit-out, we have gone back and carried out more work as Flex Fitness expanded the business into other spaces with massage rooms, a sauna, and more workout areas,” says Jim.

Celebrating Father’s Day

Sunday 1 September is Father’s Day, a day to recognise all that dads do for their families.

Celebrations and dates di er from culture to culture, however no matter the country it is all about dads, and father figures. In America, the tradition dates back to 1910 founded there by Sonora Smart Dodd, whose father, a Civil War veteran, raised six children as a single parent.

Religious history marks it as a Catholic holiday celebrating fatherhood, dating back to the Middle Ages, and taking place in March, coinciding with the Feast of St. Joseph.

An even earlier tribute to fathers goes back almost 4000 years in history to Babylonia, when a youth named Elmesu carved the first known Father’s Day card in clay. His special message wished his father good health and a long life.

These days, Father’s Day is often marked with the giving of gifts, and treating dad to a special day. From breakfast in bed, to a barbecue with friends and family, it’s still a day to say thank you to the special men in our lives.

Here are some gift ideas for your father figure.

Give your kitchen a makeover

A new finish or colour change may be exactly what your kitchen needs to give it a fresh look, and your home a new feel.

Experts at doing just that are Monique and Murray Turnbull, who are celebrating 35 years injecting new life into furniture, fittings, and homes.

Initially servicing the furniture and joinery industries as specialist finishers of spray applied coatings, MF Turnbull Ltd has grown threefold since then, with three buildings side-by-side, in Mowbray Street, Waltham, now housing the business.

Helping homeowners achieve their dreams, the team has honed their craft in bringing furniture back to life, and also opened a dedicated kitchen refinishing shop in Christchurch called MF Turnbull Kitchen Renewal, working with equally dedicated

craftspeople and suppliers to bring their projects to fruition.

“We are committed to help you get the best ‘finishing solutions’ for any job. Our experienced team will take the time to listen, advise and guide you to ensure you get the best result,” says Monique. “When your kitchen is looking outdated, often the first thought you have is that you need to rip out your old kitchen and replace it. The reality is kitchens from 15-20 years ago were built to last and are still functional.

“Repainting your kitchen can give your home a more modern look and feel for a fraction of the cost of replacing your existing cabinetry or completely renovating your kitchen.”

Step 1: What’s possible?

The team can refinish almost any kitchen (or furniture) and make it look new again. Send photos of your kitchen for an assessment of what can be done, plus a price estimate for the project.

Step 2: Pricing & Planning

They will come and meet you and undertake a full assessment for a quote. They can also discuss other alterations such as removal of overhead units, changing a cupboard to drawers or new benchtops/handles.

Step 3: Remove, refinish, reinstall

Their specialist team will remove your kitchen and it will be prepared and finished in the company’s modern workshop before reinstalling. Allow a day to remove, and reinstall, and 10-12 days to refinish.

Well, shiver me timbers

From years of watching architect George Clarke’s TV programme Amazing Spaces we have seen how versatile and beautiful small built spaces can be. They can be used for accommodation, as workshops, hobby rooms, art studios, offices, or playrooms. The uses can be as varied as their owners’ imaginations or requirements.

Loburn Sawmill recognised people’s need for extra space and designed and built their own version of an amazing space in the form of timber cabins. They have all the versatility and adaptability you might expect. Not only that, but they are incredibly functional, durable and portable and have stunning good looks as well.

Douglas fir timber is used in framing the standard cabins which are 4200mm x 2650mm in size. That is an expansion in width from the original 2400mm. Ship-lap weatherboards are joined by black Colour Steel 5 rib roof iron and doubleglazed black aluminium joinery in the windows and sliding doors. Wool insulation in the walls and ceiling assists with energy e ciency and the floors are self-insulated 45mm tongue and groove. The interior walls are clad in solid timber tongue and groove wall panelling of either larch or macrocarpa to give a detailed and sleekly modern look. The cabins are fitted with two double power points and two internal LED lights. Sustainably sourced New Zealand larch weatherboard clads the exterior of each cabin making it a sleek addition to an urban setting, or a perfect blend with a country or bush

setting. That exterior is tinted with oil and is very easy to maintain. Outside you will also find two external LED lights and a caravan plug.

“We make decking options too. In small, medium, and large, they add to the versatility of the cabin range,” says marketing manager Jess Aldridge. “You can link them up in configurations that suit you or your site. One or more cabins can then be sited together.” That means the cabins are indeed adaptable. Arrange them with interconnecting decking and you have an almost instant, very attractive, and cost-e ective bach set up.

“Our range of cabins has been so successful. They’ve sold like hot cakes and following clients’ feedback we have introduced the options of kitchen, co ee station and/or bathroom facilities”, says Jess. The ensuite option comes with a vanity, shower, toilet, and a cavity slider to keep it all private.

“Come and see our cabins at our site on Fletchers Road in Loburn,” says Jess. “The design is excellent. They are made with quality materials with a low carbon footprint, and are packed with character and good looks too.”

Furniture flair

Endless advantages come with living in our Antipodean paradise, tucked away on the 42nd parallel, but proximity to all the finest internationally-influenced craftsmanship isn’t always one of them. Fortunately, the finest of furniture craftsmanship has come to us.

Working for 40 years in upholstery, Stephen Mark, co-owner of Stephen Mark Furniture, with wife Zoë, was apprenticed in England. “My older style apprenticeship was “on the bench” under the critical eyes of more experienced upholsterers,” says Stephen.

Stephen owned three businesses in England, “One specialised in the manufacture of new furniture, another in o ering a traditional reupholstery service, and one in reproducing several designs of Knole Sofas.” He worked with London based interior designers including Maurizio Pellizzoni, Liberty of London, the Sloane Club, the Antique Trade and Portman Designs who supplied Harrods and The Savoy Hotel. He also worked with the National Trust and English Heritage on some very important historical pieces.

Now based in North Canterbury, the couple creates statement furniture that is classically designed using New Zealand beech for the frames, and finished with tailored upholstery. “We share a love of design, fabrics, and colour, and we are excited to add Troynorth Trimmings and Warwick Fabrics to our product mix,” says Zoë.

3WAYS to refresh your home for spring

Set aside a spare afternoon to reset your home or room this season.

Declutter

Spring is fresh and carefree, and the idea of living a life like that is just as appealing. Start by decluttering your home spaces. Give yourself a short timeframe and walk around your house, thinking about items you no longer need or use. If it becomes overwhelming, work through the 12-12-12 challenge. Determine 12 items that need to be put back in their proper home, 12 items to donate, and 12 items that need to be thrown away.

Reset

Once you have reduced the clutter around your home, work through the spaces and clean, clean, clean. Dust high places, wipe surfaces and objects, vacuum each room, and disinfect high-touch areas such as doorknobs. Entering the season with a clean space is a feeling like no other and makes your weekly resets much easier.

Rotate

Swap out moodier hues for light and bright shades in your curtains, throws, pillows, and décor. Lighter fabrics complement the spring season to create synchronicity in your space. Move furniture around, and add pieces that harmonise with your colour scheme, and remove those that don’t.

Straight o the bat, it’s obvious the XM looks like nothing else BMW has ever built. Its size is staggering and while, in my view, it’s not a pretty car, few cars can match it for sheer presence.

This XM is unique as it’s the Red Label Edition. Limited to 500 units, the XM Red Label combines lashings of Toronto Red accents inside and out to complement the Frozen Carbon Black paint scheme, especially around that massive BMW kidney grill. I love the 22-inch alloys, blacked out LED taillights and the funky twin-pipe set up

at the rear. Love it or loathe it, drive an XM and you will be turning heads.

We have touched on its size, now let’s move onto the grunt, for there is plenty. The XM Red Label’s 4.4L twin-turbo V8 is joined by a 25.7kWh battery pack, resulting in a gargantuan 550kW and 1000Nm of torque. The battery part means the XM is also a fully fledged plug-in-hybrid and good for 82km of electric only driving.

Inside you get all the toys you could imagine for a car with a price tag of $340,900, plus oodles of BMW M carbon bits and high grade materials. The black and red merino leather trimmed seats up front are delightful, but those in the rear accompanied by XM branded leather cushions feel even plusher. The rear legroom is also substantial to say the least. Passengers can also marvel at roof lining with ambient lighting which looks epic, especially at night.

Starting o around urban Christchurch, the XM’s girth becomes all too real. Sure, you have all manner of sensors and cameras fore and aft to help, but navigating the XM in places like The Crossing multi-story car as I found can still be a white-knuckle ride. That said, the more momentum you carry, the XM Red Label begins to shrink around you.

When you switch over from electric silent running and wake up the hard-charging twin-turbo V8, the two power units come together in epic fashion. Give it what for o the mark and this 2795kg leviathan rockets you forward with the kind of accelerating sensation usually the preserve of low-slung supercars.

The XM can also devour corners like them too. Barrel into every bend and the XM hangs on in there like a cat on shag-pile carpet, incredible stu despite its girth and tipping the scales at close to three tonnes.

While I am still not sold on those mad looks, the XM Red Label is a staggering bit of kit in every other way. Those wanting the absolute pinnacle of BMW big-power, technology and immense performance should look no further.

See something you like? Sporting an all-hybrid line up, this dynamic Coupé SUV draws you in with its impressive stance and sharp lines. VOILA

NEXT GENERATION HYBRID PUSHES SUSTAINABILITY FURTHER

Compact size and innovative European design make Toyota’s latest C-HR its most stylish yet. The coupélike design, powerful hybrid performance, and advanced technology, make it a joy to drive and to look at.

The new generation C-HR boasts a fabulous new design and a range of cutting-edge technologies, bound to impress even the most discerning drivers. Add to that hybrid electric powertrains boasting increased power, and greater driveability, and it’s a winner on the open road and round urban streets.

The new C-HR is marginally shorter and wider than the current model giving it a striking, sporty, stance on the road, further enhanced by its coupé-like profile, short overhangs, and up to 19-inch alloy wheels.

More striking than the original, its European-esque design refinements put it a step above the crowd in the mid-size crossover SUV market. Think style and function in beautiful synergy. Two-tone paints, contrasting roof, slimline LED headlights, aero-led styling and even this season’s must-have full-width rear light bar are all design features.

Inside has been supercharged with a premium feel, including lush new textures and patterns, and materials that o er a luxurious ride.

Legroom and boot space are generous, whether it’s a golf trip or a shopping excursion, experience a ride of ultimate comfort. Of note are the new-look, modern instrument and touchscreens bringing the C-HR totally up to date with technology, for seamless ease and entertainment when driving.

The fact that the new C-HR was conceived and built in Europe, contributes to its “super-coupé” profile. The front of C-HR presents the new face for Toyota SUVs, seen also on the all-electric bZ4X.

If you’re looking for a dynamic, sharply styled and high performing small SUV, this is the one.

Make your choice

In keeping with Toyota New Zealand’s determination to continue reducing its tailpipe carbon emissions from its portfolio, only hybrid electric powertrains are being o ered for the new C-HR.

Two powertrain options are available in New Zealand—a 1.8 litre engine coupled with the latest hybrid electric technology in a Front Wheel Drive format available in three grades, and a 2.0 litre hybrid electric All Wheel Drive GR Sport configuration.

The new 1.8-litre hybrid electric powertrain o ers almost 15% more power than the current version, with a combined maximum power output of 103kW. The GR Sport boasts a 2.0-litre hybrid electric powertrain with a total power output of 145kW.

The range also features other innovations and measures to help reduce its carbon footprint. Compared to its predecessor, it has double the content of recycled plastics—used in more than 100 di erent parts.

New Zealand’s only dedicated 4x4 platform is making its way to the South Island, treating mainlanders to an entire weekend of 4x4 inspiration at Wolfbrook Arena on 7 and 8 September.

The expo will host stalls by industry leaders showcasing the latest and greatest gear.

It’s the place for 4x4 fanatics to be to build their dream vehicle. There will also be a ‘Show and Shine’ segment exhibiting some dreamy options and upgrades. As its slogan goes, this truly is “the place to build your 4x4.”

Event organisers Chris and Carissa Ballantyne are ecstatic for what the event will bring to local enthusiasts.

“The ultimate ambition is to bring the 4x4 industry and 4x4 community together. We wanted to support and inspire every build in New Zealand.”

Attendees will also have the chance to win themselves a brand new o road camper valued at over $30,000. It is the ideal bit of kit to put your o roading setup into the next gear.

Whether you’re a seasoned o roader, or just dipping your toe into the world of four-wheel-drive motoring, the 4x4 Outdoor Expo is a must.

CAR STABILISE SALES

After months of decline, the latest figures from the Motor Industry Association (MIA) are giving hope to the car market.

VP BATTERIES

Locally owned and operated, means no “middle man”. Who you deal with, is who makes the decisions, meaning I can personally pass on the savings to my customers

www.vpbatteries.co.nz

0800 VPBATZ ask for Vaughan or Murray Unit 4, 5 Cass Street, Sydenham

The MIA found 9340 vehicles were registered in July, and the market may begin to level out over the coming months. While this number is below the year-to-date monthly average of 10,315, it does suggest a stabilising trend within the industry. This is welcome news to the market, following consecutive record lows in new car sales. With the economy in current crisis, the car industry has been holding out for positive news, and unfortunately, this is still the case for the Light Passenger (passenger cars and SUVs) sector. From 2023, it is down 29 percent to 6345. The MIA says this spotlights the reality of broader economic challenges.

Toyota holds the lead across the board. In July, the top 10 brands between passenger, SUV, and commercial cars were Toyota, Ford, Mitsubishi, Kia, Suzuki, Mazda, Nissan, Volkswagen, Hyundai, and GWM.
