May is a memorable month for several celebrations, not least of which is Mother’s Day on Sunday 12 May.
Most of us have a maternal figure or two in our lives, and on this day often also fondly remember those who have passed.
Mother doesn’t just mean the woman who gave birth to you;
it relates to women who nurture, those who are pregnant, and to iconic females that many relate to.
People such as former TVNZ broadcaster Judy Bailey and her fellow ‘mother of the nation’, the late kaumātua Dame Whina Cooper, both of whom are recognised for the huge, positive influence they’ve had, albeit in di erent spheres.
Many mothers fly more under the radar, and their achievements are not always newsworthy, yet the role they play is no less significant to those who benefit from their caring.
This Mother’s Day take the time to say thank you, to give the maternal figures in your life a big hug, and to show them they are valued.
May is also NZ Music Month, a time to celebrate those who create and play Kiwi tunes. Firmly entrenched as part of our cultural landscape, May has evolved from a period of encouraging radio to play more local tunes, to a 31-day celebration of homegrown talent across the length and breadth of the country.
Whatever your taste in music, there will be plenty to listen, dance, and relax to, so tune in. Better yet, take mum out to hear her favourite group play live, or pop a CD, vinyl record, or digital streaming link into her Mother’s Day card.

From mother of the nation to doting grandmother and author has been a rewarding transition for former television newsreader/journalist Judy Bailey. Along the way she has returned to her first love of writing, as she explains to Metropol Editor, Lynda Papesch
Almost 20 years have passed since TVNZ broadcaster Judy Bailey signed o her final news bulletin in 2005.
At that time, Judy had no idea that the next years would be some of the most fulfilling of her life.
The author of a new book, Evolving, Judy is now making headlines instead of reading them as she shares new science and personal stories that have shaped her own path into older age. She tackles subjects such as taking care of your body and mind,
through to organising finances, navigating health scares, grieving loved ones, and enjoying the finer things.
“Writing is why I went into journalism in the first place,” she says, adding that now those skills are being used to help society recognise the value of older people, of lives lived and experience gained. “We live in an increasingly ageist society where older people are often portrayed as frail and doddery, but the reality is many of them are still working, achieving, supporting families, and giving
back to the community. I wanted to help people plan for their older years, and to live them as fully as possible.”
A handbook on ageing, Evolving is for women and men in their middle-age, because it’s at that stage, Judy says, we need to be making lifestyle choices that will give us the best possible chance of entering older age in good shape, both mentally and physically. Having said that, it’s never too late to make positive changes, she believes.
As a writer and former broadcaster, Judy fronted primetime news for 26 years, becoming one of the most recognised faces in New Zealand, and inheriting the accolade “mother of the nation”.
After leaving TVNZ, she co-presented Māori Television’s ANZAC Day programme for many years.
A founding member and patron of Brainwave Trust Aotearoa, Judy is patron of several other organisations including the National Collective of Women’s Refuges, Hospice North Shore, Skylight Trust, the Grief Centre, and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Married to producer and director Chris Bailey, with whom she has three children, and seven grandchildren (with an eighth on the way), Judy says it is great to be going back to her writing roots.
yet also joyful. “I definitely don’t feel old. A little more grown-up than I once was, perhaps, but not necessarily old.
“Challenging because it is a time of huge change and I’m not good with change. But it has also given me more time to focus on the things that are important, such as relationships, friends and family, and to giving back.
“Now that I’m into my 70s, I find my advancing age inescapable. Gloomy? No. That is precisely what I don’t want to be about the inevitability of age. Growing older is a blessing, one so many don’t get to experience.
“... we may lose friends along the way, it is important to keep socialising, making new friends, and surrounding yourself with them.”
“I enjoyed it [writing Evolving] immensely; the research, following the journey of my life, and hopefully now helping others ease into retirement.”
One of Judy’s key messages is not waiting until retirement to start planning for it. “How you live life at a younger stage will impact on your later life,” she explains.
“Life is much more complicated now, particular with the online scene; it’s so di cult now for children, compared with when I grew up in the 50s and 60s. Life was very simple then. There weren’t as many choices, or pitfalls.”
Children need to be “well sca olded” to navigate life these days, she believes.
“Parenting is so important. The relationships that we have at the beginning of our lives (keeping in mind that relationships are the primary architects of the brain) allow us to become capable contributing adults.”
Her advice for younger generations is to start saving for their retirement from the first moment they start to earn.
“Don’t expect superannuation to cover everything, and don’t expect to own your own home.
“Even rental property is such a volatile market as many older people are now discovering, so you need to think very carefully about your future from the beginning.”
Warm, nurturing relationships are one of the key pillars of healthy ageing, says Judy.
“While we may lose friends along the way, it is important to keep socialising, making new friends, and surrounding yourself with them.”
“When you age you do begin to feel just that little bit vulnerable. That vulnerability comes, I think, from what we’re told about ageing. So much of it is negative: we’ll be frail, dependent, impoverished, a drain on the health system, on society, a burden. This is ageism, and it’s just as toxic as every –ism out there. It’s the idea that people become somehow inferior just because of the number of years they’ve lived. I wanted to dispel this myth. I want society to recognise the value of older people, of lives lived and experience gained,” says Judy.
“I see Evolving as a handbook for ageing, a guide to encourage people to try and ‘own’ it, to be more proactive in the process and not just to let it happen.”
Ageing for Judy personally has been challenging at times,
After all, I hope to have 20 or even 30 good summers left in me, and I don’t want to waste them.”
Develop good positive relationships, and spend the time to nurture them. Relationships are the primary architect for the developing brain when we’re young and vulnerable, but they are profoundly protective as we age too.
Studies show that the people who are happiest, who stayed healthiest as they grew old, and who lived the longest were the people who had the warmest connections with other people. Those who were happiest at 50, the study found, were healthiest at 80. And those who were happiest in retirement were the people who nurtured relationships with family, friends and their community. Loneliness is a problem for so many people, so do what you can to include others.
Look after your heart. According to neuroscientists like the University of Auckland’s Sir Richard Faull (ONZM), ‘What’s good for the heart is good for the brain.’ As well as increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes, things like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity also increase the risk of dementia.
Dementia: The experts tell me genes only account for around a seven percent risk of developing dementia. They say if you live a healthy, active lifestyle, that will lessen the risk, even if you have a genetic risk. Activity that is cognitively challenging for half an hour at least five days a week is profoundly protective. Take up ballroomdancing, kapa haka, anything that stimulates the brain to think creatively and across both hemispheres.
Think carefully about retirement. If you’ve had a busy job or one that defines you, this time can be hard because you can lose the sense of who you are. Whenever you do it, and on whatever terms, retirement is a transition and something we need to prepare for, not just fall into. It is not about life narrowing; it’s about life expanding. After all, most of us will have at least another 20 good years ahead of us. Yes, it’s about evolving!
Changing the dating scene with her matchmaking application, Christchurch entrepreneur Emily Heazlewood has a knack for turning ideas into reality – or apps. She catches up with Metropol Deputy Editor Nina Tucker on sacrifice, self-teaching, and saying yes.
People are talking about love. Relationship dynamics and meaningful connections are hot topics.
The Japanese government even launched a matchmaking programme to encourage relationships and boost population numbers. Lately, love looks like it’s being rescued. Theresa Gattung created Compatico in February, and the latest, Emily’s Amor, launched in late April, is quickly gaining traction.
Emily’s initial drive came from being told she wouldn’t follow through with it. “I needed to prove it to myself and prove it to them. I love to live by my word.” With help from friends and family and a tick of approval from New Zealand’s top relationship expert, Emily built Amor. Self-taught in more ways than one, Emily drew from her passion for apps and business. “I love apps. I live through apps.”
An unhappy relationship behind her, and the state of the modern dating landscape, as well as growing up watching her parents realise their incompatibility, sent Emily searching for a solution. With five successful siblings, and a family home that encouraged business talk and ambition, Emily knew she would make something happen, and the majority of it, she would do on her own.
at 5am each day to hustle. The team at Co ee Culture Riccarton saw a lot of the extremely driven, early-morning Emily. Somehow, she made it happen. “It took a massive community. I would not say it was just me that did it all.”
Emily’s no stranger to business déjà vu, having released the app Romer too, just a few years after finishing high school. Nicknamed the ‘Tinder for things to do,’ Romer displays all the must-dos in a city, including events, activities, eateries, and walks. It was an idea that came about after travelling in Melbourne, where Emily was relying on a friend for both the well-known and ‘locals-only’ spots to check out. Comparing the two, she says that back then, “The highs were super high, and the lows were super low,” yet feels she has a better handle on it this time. “When I did Romer, I burnt out so much and overworked. This time, I’ve been really good at taking breaks.”
“I’ve tried so many ideas, but there’s this feeling you get. You’re just like a dog with a bone and you won’t give up.”
“It’s been a long, long road. I’ve been dreaming about this for about a year now. It’s good to be here, but it’s also quite stressful.”
Emily was the recipient of the Christchurch Foundation’s Women’s Entrepreneurs Fund 2023, which came at a pivotal money moment. Recognition, validation, and the ability to hire a developer for a few hours a week, it was a massive enabler for Amor, even though she already felt luckier than most with startups. “I know people need it more. I’m very fortunate. But yes, it’s burning a hole in my back pocket.”
To make it work, Emily put her house on Airbnb and moved in with her brother. She was determined to put every dollar she could into the dream. It was a balancing act and it wasn’t smooth sailing. Emily went through weeks of uncertainty when Apple told her they were not accepting any more dating apps. “I have definitely got more greys in the last year,” she laughs. The sacrifices were heavy, yet accountability kept her going. “I always say to people, talk about your idea early, because you will be accountable to it. I talked to a few key mentors about it and they were keeping me accountable.”
Emily adds that pursuing this idea was entirely new. “I’ve tried so many ideas, but there’s this feeling you get. You’re just like a dog with a bone and you won’t give up.”
Between working full-time in investment, paying a mortgage, mowing the lawns at her house, cleaning up after guests, and coding the app until midnight, Emily kept going, getting back up
• Don’t be the smartest person: Get the smartest people around you.
• Seed relationships: Encourage connections, and reach out to like-minded people on LinkedIn.
• Take opportunities: Say yes to public speaking and networking events.
• Promote your product: Tell people what you are creating, and where you are hoping to take it.
Amor’s onboarding process is detailed compared with typical dating apps, however, it works in favour of finding a better match. Attachment style, personality type, love language, goals, values, and beliefs all come into play. Going deeper, Emily included questions that consider how money is spent in a relationship, whether bank accounts would be shared, and how independence might be maintained, to encourage key discussions. With up to four matches a week, physical appearance withheld at the start, and in-person date night events make the rest of the di erence, an excited Emily explains, with a golden retriever-like energy. “I’m just being a nerd, and really proud of my product,” she laughs.
That belief in her product is one of the major contributors to her success. It was something that, when noticed in a co ee shop and asked to pitch Romer to a table of 12 men dressed in suits, motivated her to get up, walk over, and introduce her product. It ended up landing her two new investors. “You have got to give to people to get back,” she says.
Make no mistake, Emily could happily spend her days at home in slippers and activewear, yet business often gets the better of this solution-driven Cantabrian. When she’s not launching apps, Emily loves walking her dog, is a DIYer, gardener and nature lover, although sometimes a walk will be interrupted by a dash back to the car to write down a new idea.
While she met her partner Josh Van der Meulen (pictured) along the way, Emily still resonates with the struggles of the people she sees on the app. Businesspeople, single parents, and those ready for love, who have all the time for privacy and and none for meaningless hook-ups.
Emily’s next steps for Amor are to introduce increased date nights, coaching, and hit the numbers to launch in Australia and Japan, and she’s looking to a future with a family of her own.
Maton guitars are handcrafted by a Melbourne-based company, from Australian timbers such as Blackwood, bunya, Queensland maple, Queensland walnut, and satin box.
Legendary guitar virtuoso Tommy Emmanuel played Christchurch in April this year. Metropol Editor Lynda Papesch caught up with him to talk life, music, and inspiration.
On his first tour to New Zealand in six years, worldrenowned guitarist Tommy Emmanuel left audiences in no doubt that he is a master.
A living legend in the world of acoustic guitar, Tommy’s internationally celebrated for his jaw-dropping technique, innovation, and boundless musicality. For decades he has enthralled audiences around the globe with dazzling fingerstyle performances, strumming and plucking his beloved Maton guitar.
From breathtaking ballads to exhilarating up-tempo tunes, his repertoire is a mix of old and new, the last 10 years working on the latter. “I feel more driven than ever,” Tommy explains. “The last decade has been so much work with many new songs, and a lot of great times and adventures in life and music that will never be repeated.”
He’s known for playing all genres, enjoying a wide range of music, “and people too”.
“I love hearing music from all cultures and countries, however, I don’t waste my hearing on anything soulless,” he smiles. That smile is part of his trademark.
Tommy is happiest playing, putting his heart and soul into his music. “I can’t help playing to people with all my heart, which is overflowing with joy of being in that moment that I’ve worked all my life for.” His happiness is infectious, fans admitting it’s hard not to be happy at his shows.
so played two sets. That’s always fun and challenging for me. It also gives me a chance to tell more stories if that’s what I’m led to do.”
While known for his guitar skills and his hand-crafted Australian guitar, Tommy also plays bass and “I really love playing drums”.
He’s constantly inspired by other artists, singers, films, stories, and people who show a better way to live. “You can never go wrong drawing inspiration from great artists like Chet Atkins, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, Eric Clapton, the list can go on and on.”
“Always it’s about melody, of expressing the tune not with a barrage of notes, but with those that touch the heart.”
Music has been his life-long inspiration. From a musical family, around age six Tommy went on tour with the family band, and by the time he reached his twenties, he was the most sought-after performer and session musician in Sydney. By age 30, he was burning on electric guitar with several rock bands in stadiums across Europe, while yearning for something purer and closer to his heart. Throwing fate to the wind, Tommy went acoustic, stripping away everything but the essentials. His trademark became one acoustic guitar in standard tuning, played by one ambitiously unchained guitarist and a lover of song.
Now in his seventies, and Australian by birth, Tommy’s visited New Zealand often. “It’s a beautiful place, and there’s a lot of talent and inspiration that springs out of the place. New Zealand crowds are awesome. There’s a genuine love of music that transcends age or religions.”
On tour, he doesn’t use a set list unless working with a band or orchestra. “I make up my mind what to start with, and then make it up as I go along. This last New Zealand tour, I had no opening act,
His inspiration for the transformation was his hero, Chet Atkins, who represented the purity of one man, one guitar, and unlimited passion for serving the song. Tommy met Chet in Nashville, and they formed an immediate bond and life-long friendship.
Chet also welcomed Tommy into guitarist knighthood by bestowing upon him the coveted title of CGP (Certified Guitar Player), an honour awarded only to four others.
For Tommy now, it’s still about the purity of music. “Always it’s about melody, of expressing the tune not with a barrage of notes, but with those which touch the heart,” he says.

For the second consecutive year, Hazel Rae has won the Zonta Ashburton Female Art Awards “People’s Choice”, this year for her work Voyage, a clear favourite among the 350 votes that were ca .
Aportrait of Hazel’s friend’s grandparents, Voyage tells a story. Rather than following the conventions of traditional portraiture, Hazel embellished the paintings with motifs informed by personal stories, aiming to narrate the couple’s individual personalities and their combined life story.
In 2023, Hazel won the award, with her painting
Suits, a painted triptych which reflects on the societal perception of women by reinventing images of housewives from the 1950s. With her characters imagined as playing cards, Hazel injects scenes of domesticity with chance and chaos.
Currently studying at Ilam School of Fine Arts, University of Canterbury, Hazel says she was “humbled and so pleased” that the public enjoys viewing her work.

Taking time out for your hobbies has mental health benefits and o ers a sense of purpose. Art Metro udent Sue Shannons is reaping the rewards at her weekly classes
Having always dabbled in art, the classes o ered at the local art school sparked Sue’s interest. “I signed up with Art Metro in 2020. I was, however, immediately diagnosed with breast cancer and decided to cancel. Simon Walmisley [Art Metro owner] encouraged me to come when I was able, and it was great to have something to look forward to. Since joining, I have experimented in various forms of art and medium, and with my tutor Cristina’s encouragement, I feel able to try almost anything.”
Sue says she enjoys the informal style of the classes. “We all do pretty much what we want.” One thing she especially appreciates is the Art Metro tutor’s hands-o approach. They never alter their student’s work, giving instead encouragement and pointers on how to improve. Drawing her inspiration from other artists in her class and their works has given Sue the courage to have a go. “We have a great group of people. There is a lot of encouragement, laughter, and enjoyment. It really is a form of therapy.”
Enthusiastic about her artistic pursuits, Sue thinks more people should consider taking art classes. “I would encourage anyone who thinks they might like to have a go, to come along. You have no idea what hidden talents you may find,” she says.

IIMAGE: Folds & Shadows I by Nigel Buxton 2024,
n this colourful exhibition, Buxton presents paintings in the tradition of trompe l’oeil. These works, at first glance, persuade us to accept illusion. Paint modelled on a flat canvas surface trick us for a moment into believing we see draped fabric in three dimensions. In smaller rectangular works, the flops and folds of fabric curve sensuously within the picture frame. These paintings are sometimes flaglike, sometimes carnivalesque, and all have great rhythm.

The Christchurch arts industry is evolving in leaps and bounds. Entering a new era is the iconic Isaac Theatre Royal.
Arenowned venue steeped in history and grandeur, the locally-loved building on 145 Gloucester St is undergoing a transformative shift. No longer merely a space for hire, it is poised to become a vibrant hub of community engagement and exciting cultural celebrations.
Launching its new Community Programme marks a pivotal moment for the theatre. Over the next three years, the team will focus on fostering cultural competency, rooted in principles like manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, and kotahitanga, to truly reflect and celebrate the community’s diversity.
Greg Ward, CEO of the Isaac Theatre Royal, reflects on this new initiative. “We are thrilled to embark on this journey towards a more inclusive and community-focused future. Our goal is to break down barriers and ensure that the theatre is accessible and welcoming to all members of our community.”
Central to the programme is the commitment to diversity and inclusivity. Through collaborations with local organisations and schools, financial barriers to access the theatre will be dismantled, ensuring that programming caters to the varied interests and backgrounds of the community.
Partnerships with mana whenua and other cultural sectors seek to enrich the theatre’s o erings, providing a diverse program that resonates deeply
with communities. Educational outreach, such as the ‘Theatre in Schools’ program, will provide young audiences with access to high-quality professional theatre experiences, aligning with NCEA standards to enhance learning outcomes.
“Our aim is to foster a sense of belonging and inspire engagement with the arts among all members of the Canterbury community,” says Ward.
“The Isaac Theatre Royal is not just a venue, it is a cultural cornerstone that thrives on community participation and enrichment.”
The Isaac Theatre Royal’s evolution underscores its dedication to embracing the diverse tapestry of Canterbury’s cultural landscape, serving as a vital space for entertainment, learning, and community development. isaactheatreroyal.co.nz
Large international conferences are being attracted to Christchurch for its world-acclaimed new infrastructure, appealing setting and local expertise.
With a series of high-profile conferences back-toback, May is set to be high-paced for many local businesses in what is traditionally a quiet, o -peak tourism month.
Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre is hosting 8255 delegates during May, with 2650 of them international visitors for events as diverse as the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Annual Scientific Congress 2024, the Institute of Directors NZ Conference, and the MotorSport NZ Conference.
The economic and social benefits that flow into the local community from these events are highly valuable.
Te Pae Christchurch alone works with 222 suppliers from the
Canterbury region and 85% of its purchases are from local suppliers.

Venues Ōtautahi, managers of Christchurch Town Hall and Wolfbrook Arena, will welcome almost 29,000 people through its doors for 22 business-related events in May. These range from large public exhibitions such as the Careers Expo and the New Zealand Motorhome, Caravan and Leisure Show, to conferences and meetings including the Tactical Medicine New Zealand conference, and the Carbon and Energy Professionals conference.

Sideline sport, walking to work, wet weekend activities. Who said the attire should only be strictly gumboots and old coats?
While sometimes the weather or location grants it, there is an optimism in dressing with valour despite the forecast. Winter fashion is the home of layering and volume, and opulent accessories are the cherry on top.
No longer do we have facemasks warming our cheeks, so source a flu y scarf. Chic, bulky, and statementmaking, as is the trend, yet serves its main purpose: to heat you up. Top it o with a classic-style beanie and a sleek hairstyle.
Bundling our hands in our pockets is sometimes not enough, so a pair of flu y, fingerless, or luxe leather gloves can keep to your look while keeping you warm.
Bag-wise, stay simple. The annoyance of many warm layers is made worse when the bag on your shoulder will not stay up. If your favourite winter coat does not have epaulettes, consider a cardholder or a clutch, something lightweight and easily pocketable.

Consuming the correct foods after a workout can be an incredibly beneficial tool in your exercise routine.
For hydration, muscle protein increases, and to reduce the opportunity for injury, eating after intense activity is great. This all leads to better recovery, which soon results in better outcomes for both your body and mind.
From full cream to skim, coconut to almond, soy to rice, and hemp milk, debate about the healthiest type is continuous, as people want to know which is the healthiest to drink. Quite simply, there is no one milk that suits everyone, taking into account dietary requirements and taste preferences.
In the past, health pundits ranked di erent types of milks based on calorie content or saturated fat, but today’s literature and research stress the importance of insulin and blood sugar management over calories and fat, noting that each kind of milk has unique, distinctive nutritional qualities. Nutritionists and industry groups urge label literacy when choosing your milk.
Most adults drink milk in one form or another, in their tea or coffee, on their cereal, by the glass, enjoying a wide variety of cow, goat, nut, and plant-based options.
Cow’s milk: The nutritional profile includes calcium, potassium, magnesium, zinc, iodine, and vitamins A, B, and D, and lactose, a natural sugar which will impact on glucose levels.
Soy milk: Made from the same legume soy as edamame and tofu, soy milk usually has additional nutrients added during the production process. It usually contains calcium and vitamins A and D, but most are more processed than other alternative milks, which means they have more sugar.
Almond milk: Made from waterlogged almonds, it is considered to have a “normal glucose response” after consumption.
Oat milk: While it includes fibre, it contains lots of sugar and little protein, so it will raise your blood sugars.
Coconut milk: Made by pressing coconut meat, it has a naturally sweet taste, contains saturated fat, which does not allow blood sugar to rise dramatically, and has medium-chain triglycerides to support the gut microbiome.
Hemp milk: Made from the seeds of the cannabis sativa plant, it includes a decent amount of protein, has some dietary fibre, and is gentle on the gut.
For very few people would a plunge into freezing cold water be a comfortable thing. The idea of it, let alone the action, is breathtakingly scary. The same can be said about immersing oneself in 70-90 degrees of heat with a sauna, although it seems like an easier mental challenge.
Top athletes have sworn by cold or hot water therapy in their recovery regimes. From celebrities to the Scandinavian babies left outside in cold weather for a stronger immune system, to grassroots-level sports teams, the health-boosting properties of hot and cold treatments are well-utilised.
Temperature therapy elicits a ‘shock’ response in your body, like the ‘fight-or-flight’ reaction that comes with extreme stress. After the consumption of that uncomfortable feeling of the cold or heat, which diverts your focus from other unpleasant happenings going on, the body will adapt and produce hormones, including serotonin and dopamine. At the finish, you will feel refreshed, relaxed, and rejuvenated.
Immersion in freezing cold water can reduce stress levels, inflammation, achy joints, and lift mental health and metabolism. While we do not have the luxury of living somewhere like Canada or Switzerland with beautifully icy lakes to plunge into, we do have alternatives. Plug-in ice baths exist for a seamless experience each time, while sizeable containers can be sourced for filling with ice and water at home. Cryotherapy and other treatments are available on the market, for one-o or recurring sessions. An easy introduction into the world of cold temperature therapy can be as simple as switching the tap cold for the last few minutes of showering, or a short swim in an unheated pool.
Heat temperature therapy comes with a plethora of alternate benefits. Heat exposure and thermal therapy is a form of detoxification, leading to better skin, along with improved blood circulation, mental health, and cardiovascular health. Just close your eyes and think of it as one big warm hug for your body and mind. Aside from the sauna, spending time in warm bodies of water can be the next alternative. In New Zealand, while many natural hot springs have restricted entry, there are multiple local spots across Canterbury where you can utilise the properties. Otherwise, a hot bath or spa should do the trick.
The use of temperature therapy contributes to other gains, such as mental toughness, tolerance, and a better ability to adapt. In any way, both extremes encourage relaxation, clarity, and time away from devices or other contributors to a brain that just will not slow down. For both, hydration is key, as too much fluid loss can lead to more harm than good.
Some experts suggest marrying hot and cold temperature stimulation in your wellness journey. However, before moving forward with anything, it is best to consult one of Christchurch’s many experienced specialists in temperature therapy, or your general practitioner.

This staggering death toll has prompted the Heart Foundation to highlight heart attacks, deeming them a “a critical issue a ecting women’s health”. Foundation statistics show that heart disease is the single biggest cause of death among women in New Zealand, claiming the lives of almost eight women every day.
Contrary to popular belief, women may not always experience the classic symptoms of a heart attack, such as chest pain or discomfort. Instead, they may present symptoms including shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, backache, jaw pain, or extreme fatigue.
These di erences in symptoms can sometimes lead to underrecognition and delayed treatment, putting women at greater risk of serious complications or death.
An international study published in 2020 concludes that women under the age of 55 can experience di erent heart attack symptoms to men.
The study looked at 10 symptoms of a heart attack and the top symptoms experienced by both men and women were pain in the chest, jaw, neck, arm or back. Women presented with less chest pain and more sweating, dizziness and nausea than men.
Heart Foundation Medical Director Dr Gerry Devlin says too many women are dying from heart attacks as the warning signs aren’t recognised.
“Seeking medical attention promptly is crucial as early intervention can make all the di erence in saving lives. We encourage women to look after their hearts and get a heart check with their health practitioner as soon as they get any of these symptoms.”
• Women without any known risk factors of heart disease are advised to get a heart check from the age of 55.
• Women with known heart disease risks should be checked at 45.
• Māori, Pasifika and South Asian women are advised to go from age 40.
• Those with severe mental illness as early as 25 years old (their mortality rate is 2-3 times higher and cardiovascular disease is a major contributor to that).

A locally made plant-based chocolate so delicious that it doesn’t taste vegan is New Zealand’s supreme champion outstanding food product.
Mind Your Temper’s vegan Black Forest Bonbon, described by judges as ‘faultless’, was named Leefield Station Supreme Champion and Bonbon Champion at this year’s Outstanding Food Producer Awards earlier this month.
Crafted from plant-based chocolate made with coconut milk powder, the winning bonbon is one of a range of treats which creator Christchurch’s Nel Vincencio (pictured) says surprise people when they learn they are vegan. “A funny thing happens if I say something is vegan or plant-based. People become suspicious and expect it won’t taste good.” The judges weren’t discouraged; they said the bonbon had “Perfect gloss and shine. Outstanding developed flavour. Exemplary. Amazing flavour journey. Faultless”. The Supreme Champion and Bonbon
Champion awards were among a haul of 13 medals, including six gold for the dessert-maker. More than 250 New Zealand-made food and non-alcoholic drinks gained accolades, with 17 champions and 137 gold medal winners from 355 entries.
Professionally trained in Seattle, Washington, Nel says it was initially di cult to establish himself as a vegan food producer, given that desserts are usually rich in dairy products. “Everyone knows someone who is vegan, or lactose intolerant, so our products are perfect to accommodate that diet while providing joy – and flavour.”
Nel explains it is more di cult to create perfect vegan chocolate and desserts, as there are no proven recipes. After hundreds of trials, he believes he now has the perfect recipe, and multiple awards to prove it.

TOpening a restaurant in difficult times might seem a risky undertaking. With a proven formula, loyal following, and a wellknown brand, that risk is considerably reduced.
his is the case for Rolleston’s latest eatery, Aroy Thai. The branch becomes the 13th in the chain across the country, in Wellington, Auckland, Napier, and Christchurch. In food, longevity and trust is vital, and it is something the Aroy team do well. The word “aroy” means delicious in the Thai language, a way to discreetly describe each dish on the menu. The company’s aim is to make Thai food a ordable for everyone, including families, with the price of dishes being the same for both lunch and dinner.
At each branch, the menu is standardised, just like the high quality and healthy nature of the food produced. There are small bites, noodle and rice dishes, curries, soups, and desserts. The chefs recommend the chive cakes, Tom Kha chicken soup, or the delicious Thai banana fritters.
Each branch has proven the successful formula, with customers flocking to each location. Two years in planning and development, the Rolleston eatery wows with clean, minimalist décor, and an emphasis entirely on food. Dietary requirements are catered for, with a range of plant-based dishes, including plant-based crispy pork. Drool at the menu online to dine in or take away.

The café itself is warm and welcoming with its fireplace, easy chairs, and eclectic collection of furniture and decorative objects.
There is a new winter menu for brunch and lunch featuring delights such as The White Rabbit’s breakfast, a medley of mushrooms on toast, a pancake platter, or the piece de resistance, savoury mince on Yorkshire pudding with poached eggs. A special treat over the colder season is the café’s campfire hot chocolate, a fun family activity that’s truly decadent as well.
The café’s overflowing cabinet is loaded with fresh sandwiches, salads, and beautiful homemade baked goods. They are also now selling a range of Harney and Sons teas and Gielen Family Farm honey. There is even more retail therapy to be had with locally made jewellery, teaspoons, wooden spoons, and coasters for sale, some with an obligatory Alice in Wonderland theme. This really is a magical café.

For colder nights, try this classic Venison Wellington, using a seared tenderloin covered with a mushroom mix, wrapped in prosciutto and pastry and baked to perfection.
COOK TIME: 75 MINS • SERVES: 6
INGREDIENTS
1kg farm raised venison tenderloin
1 Tbsp olive oil
Salt and pepper
1/4 cup Dijon mustard
10–12 slices prosciutto
4 sheets pu pastry, thawed if frozen
1 egg, beaten
MUSHROOM MIX:
1 Tbsp butter
2 shallots, peeled and halved
3 garlic cloves, peeled and roughly chopped
650g button mushrooms, roughly chopped
1 Tbsp thyme, finely chopped
1
2
3
Preheat oven to 200°C. At room temperature, dry the venison with a paper towel, tie into a roll, brush with oil, then season with salt and pepper.
In a large heavy-based frying pan on high heat, sear the venison for 3 minutes on each side, including the tenderloin ends. Transfer to a chopping board, and cool.
Blend shallots, garlic and mushrooms until finely chopped. In a heavy set pan over medium heat, add butter and mushroom mix and cook, stirring often, for 20 minutes, until the liquids have evaporated and it forms a chunky paste. Stir in thyme, season with salt and pepper, and cool.
4
5
Untie the venison and brush liberally with mustard.
On a large piece of cling film, lay the prosciutto, overlapping to form a square. Spread thinly with mushroom mix, place the venison on top, and roll up tightly. Chill in fridge for 20 minutes.
6
Arrange the pastry sheets, on a sheet of baking paper, in a giant square, and roll into one. Unwrap the prosciutto roll and place in the middle of the pastry. Fold the pastry to cover the roll completely, and trim if needed. Tightly roll the prepared Venison Wellington in cling film and place in the fridge for 20 minutes.
7
Remove cling film and place the Venison Wellington on a lined baking tray. Brush with beaten egg, sprinkle with salt, make some slits on top of pastry for the steam vent and bake for 40 minutes, until the pastry is golden brown and the internal temperature of the venison reaches 57°C (for medium-rare).
Rest for 20 minutes, before slicing and serving warm with your favourite sides.

Drapes, curtains, window dressing, call them what you will. They have been described as the “lipstick” of a room’s furnishings; an all-important finishing touch.
Curtains can shut the world out or let the light in. They help set the scene, and in autumn/winter come into their own, adding warmth, ambience, and mood to any room. Colour and pattern are important, and so too are the size and placement of curtains in a room. If you want to make a room look luxurious and high-end, the number one rule is to hang them ceiling to floor, and a bit more besides for an ultra-chic e ect.
continues on next page...
Hang ‘em high and wide
Curtains look and function best when they are floor length, and there are three options:
• Floating - a finger width of space from the floor to the bottom of the curtain.
• Breaking - a very slight fold or bend just above the hem.
• Puddling – the fabric pools on the floor.
Floating is the easiest to maintain, as breaking and puddling require some flu ng and arranging each time the curtain is moved.
The only time to use short curtains is if there is something below the window that won’t allow floor-length, for instance, a heat source. Try a blind instead.
To add to your high-end look, use statement rods and finials, and embrace layering.
Custom-made is an obvious way to achieve a gorgeous end result. Unlimited choice of fabrics, decorative trims, and various pleat options make customised curtain unique to each home.
If buying ready-made and they don’t have the exact length that you need, purchase longer curtains and have them hemmed to the correct height.
If you do decide to go the DIY or ready-made route with curtains, fullness is important.
Measure the width of your window and multiply that by 2 or 2.5 to calculate the perfect width for appropriate fullness.
The curtain rod should completely cover the window frame and extend past the window. Going wider than the window with the curtain rod makes the window appear wider, and allows the curtains to open across to the wall, instead of in front of the window, allowing allows more natural light into your room.
Colour, texture, and pattern choice is personal, however remember that darker shades will make a larger space cosier. Earthy or bright gemstone-inspired colours, such as rich blues, and autumn hues of brown and gold, create warmth and intimacy, and also absorb light to add a cocooning e ect. Tranquil alternatives are warm-toned neutrals, such as beige, cream, and ivory, or nature’s colours of brown, tan, and olive. For drama and luxury, jump to jewel hues such as emerald, garnet, sapphire, and amethyst.
Just as you wrap up to face the cold, so too can you prep your home to add warmth. A simple means of beating the chill is by adding a beautiful area rug or carpet mat into your living areas, workspaces, and bedrooms. Plush woollen floor rugs will keep your toes (and pets) toasty even on large, hard floor areas.
Wool is durable, high-quality, looks great, and is a ordable when you know where to shop. Finding a rug that’s the right size for your space can be challenging, which is where the Rugs For All Outlet Store, a division of Carpet Binders is your key to success.
Experts in edging carpets into rugs, they recently launched a new outlet where they provide high-quality 100% wool carpet mats with the most a ordable price tag around. Rugs For All at unit 8, 37 Washbournes Road in Sockburn is the perfect place to stop by and pick up a new made-to-measure custom carpet area rug.
Co-owner Michelle MacWilliam is well-respected for her knowledge in the rug industry and explains that there are many reasons you may want a quality New Zealand wool rug.
“Say you have a large open-space lounge with a log burner, and you are after a mat that you want the kids
to sit on, plus another by the front door. We can make matching mats here, made to your size requirements and your choice of finish,” Michelle says.
“For polished and hard-floor homes, especially new homes, having an area rug on the floor that is wool will provide insulation, comfort, and is fire retardant. We have a whole range of finishes for you to choose from once you have selected your carpet piece, so you can tailor your area rug to suit your décor.”
One of the benefits of heading into Rugs For All is their quick turn around on custom rugs. If you’re passing through town or in a bit of a rush, simply stop by, choose your carpet and edging finish, and let the team know your specifications. They’ll have it ready for you to pick up later in the day. It is as easy as that.
“We specialise in 100% quality New Zealand wool products. We don’t do cheap and cheery, but we do a ordable.”
Stop by Rugs For All where you will receive expert advice, a caring and friendly team, and quality a ordable rugs with all the benefits.

If you have sadly accepted that a holiday home of your own is out of reach, there is another option. Loburn Sawmill has designed and built a range of stunning cabins. They are so versatile they can be a guest room, a self-contained flat, a workshop, a studio, an o ce, or any type of shed you could possibly need, wherever you need it to be.
To meet demand, the team has designed two larger sized cabins. Now added to the original range are the 4.2m x 2.6m, and the 5.8m x 2.6m cabins.
One of the largest cabins went recently to the Catlins. “It had room for a queen bed, co ee station, bar fridge, cavity slider and toilet and shower. Outside there is the covered deck,” says marketing manager Jess Aldridge.
A look at the team’s website shows just how adaptable the cabins are. One or more cabins can be sited together. Arrange them with decking to connect the cabins, and you have an almost instant, very attractive, and cost e ective bach set up.
“We make decking options too. In small, medium, and large, they add to the versatility of the cabin
range. You can link them up in configurations that suit you or your site,” says Jess.
Sustainably sourced New Zealand larch cladding wraps each cabin, making it a sleek addition to an urban setting, or a perfect blend with a countryside or bush setting. “The cabins are really strong, and also really portable,” says Jess.
The highly regarded and preferred Douglas Fir timber is used in framing the cabins. Ship-lap weatherboards are joined by black Colour Steel 5 rib roof iron and double-glazed black aluminium joinery in the window and sliding door. Wool insulation in the walls and ceiling assists with energy e ciency, and the floor is self-insulated 45mm T&G.
The interior walls are clad in solid timber T.G&V wall panelling and fitted with two double power points and two internal LED lights. Outside, you will find two external LED lights and a caravan plug. “We are so proud of what we have created with our cabins,” says Jess. “They’re made with quality materials with a low carbon footprint, and are packed with character and good looks too.”

The thousands who use them have welcomed the Government’s about-turn on road user charges (RUCs) for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).
In March, after rigorous complaints about the rates, Transport Minister Simeon Brown announced a reduced road user charge of $38 per 1000km, which is half the full RUC rate. Pending regulations had proposed that this rate be $53 per 1000km, or two-thirds the full RUC rate of $76 per 1000km, but analysis showed that this would result in PHEV owners paying more in RUCs (including petrol tax) than comparable hybrid vehicles.
Motor Industry Association (MIA) Chief Executive O cer Aimee Wiley says based on average fuel consumption of new petrol hybrid vehicles sold in the last two years, MIA analysis showed that at the initial proposed RUC rate, a PHEV would pay 70% more than an equivalent hybrid petrol vehicle, and a full battery electric vehicle (BEV) would pay 95% more.
“This would unfairly disadvantage owners of PHEVs, whose battery range can vary according to model and age, and potentially discourage the uptake of these low-emissions vehicles and undermine progress to reduce transport emissions,” she says.
The MIA recommended instead that the RUC rate for both PHEVs and BEVs be benchmarked to the average contribution of equivalent petrol-engine vehicles and not the full RUC rate. Wider industry jointly supported the requested reduction in RUC rates as a more equitable interim solution until RUC is universally applied to all light vehicles in New Zealand.
“While the MIA is pleased with the lower RUC rate for PHEVs, we are disappointed that a fairer rate has not been introduced for BEVs also, as the higher rate will likely discourage some buyers. BEV and PHEV uptake can play a critical role in achieving our climate targets; reducing the health impacts on New Zealand from air pollution; and contributing to a more productive economy built on domestic renewable energy, which will ultimately bring down household energy costs.”
RUCs for pure electric vehicles continue unchanged, at $76 per 1000km.
Something really quirky and fun shines through in the French attitude to making cars. Rather than just adhere to simplistic form and function, the French ethos behind creating a vehicle ensures character, eccentric style, plus a sense of enjoyment. Ben Selby reports.
This brings us to the new Peugeot 2008 GT, which certainly sports plenty of that gallic eccentricity and charm. A facelift, first glance doesn’t reveal much di erence between the outgoing 2008 and the new one. Take a second gander and you notice a more squaredjawed front lip, revised LED tail-light cluster and a more aggressive looking front fascia. Plus, it’s great to see styling features such as the LED daytime running lights which pay homage to the brand’s lion emblem by way of its claws.
Inside, it is very much a modern-day Peugeot, and that is a good thing, with everything from a sharp-looking centre console to the driver focused 10-inch touch screen infotainment display. Plus, the piano key style toggle switches to operate features like the air con.
Thankfully, the Peugeot 3D i-cockpit, which we first saw on the 308 hatch, makes a welcome return in the new 2008. I just love this feature as you can see your speed and engine revs floating on the screen, as if seeing it through 3D glasses.
The 2008 GT does come with some toys. The 360-degree reversing camera is clear and concise, and you have keyless entry, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Wireless Charging, multiple USB ports, Blind Spot Monitoring and Adaptive Cruise control, to name a few, as standard.
The seats provide ample support and head room is decent too. Stepping into the back it is very much the same story. You sit upright in the back, and my 5’10” frame fitted snugly inside.
Moving o and the 2008 GT’s 1.2L PureTech three cylinder turbo petrol engine provides a solid delivery of torque, all while emitting a deep-throated, mechanical soundtrack. Honestly, there is just something really nice about how a three cylinder sounds.
After a while, you get used to the small steering wheel you have clasped in your mitts, and this is when you discover a good level of steering feel too. The 2008 GT does exhibit similar handling characteristics of a hot hatchback. Sure it won’t rearrange your fillings with rip-roaring acceleration, but for darting in and out of urban Christchurch tra c and the tight corners of your local mall’s multi-story car park, it is quite fun.
However, there is more to driving a 2008 GT than solely the opportunity to partake in driving exuberance. I also found it extremely apt as a daily driver, as it should be. A quick shopping trip was stowed away nicely within the dual level boot, one which if you drop the second row will swell into 1467L of cargo space. The ride is supple and engaging and tyre roar is minimal at best too.
The new Peugeot 2008 GT has plenty going for it, and those who will willingly embrace its unique character, quirky style and “joie de vivre” driving qualities will find plenty to love here.

The i5, which makes it the 10th EV in BMW’s range, is the only 5-series available to buy in NZ. The i5 shares many styling cues we have seen on other BMW EVs like the iX and i4 but it’s the addition of M-Sport design tweaks that make it such an aggressive looking package. I love the subtle use of carbon, the kidney grill with LED surrounds and those 20-inch blacked out M-sport alloys with M embossed brake callipers.
Powering the i5 is a hefty 84kWh battery pack powering dual electric motors which drive all four wheels. The i5 M60 xDrive produces a hefty combined 442kW and 820Nm of torque. Compatible with chargers up to 205kW, the i5 will take anywhere from eight hours on an 11kW AC wall box charger, to 30 minutes on a fast charger. Equally impressive is the i5’s ability to travel more than 500km on a single charge.
Inside, it is such a techno-fest. The combo of a 14.9-inch infotainment screen and 12.3-inch BMW Live Cockpit instrument display shows a plethora of driving information which you can also access via the Swarovski crystal dial on the centre console. A thumping Bowers and Wilkins sound system and even the ability to take selfies with your passengers are just the tip of the technological iceberg. The driving position is perfect and ergonomically, it’s very good too.
One feature I found rather addictive was the electric over boost function. Flick a paddle mounted behind that M-sport steering wheel and you get 10 seconds of extra instant torque which makes overtaking such a breeze. Accompanying this is a much louder Sci Fi-esque sound playing through the speakers to signify BMW’s Starship Enterprise has engaged Warp 9.
The i5 really goes like a starship too. While the steering may be a tad vague sometimes, the i5’s intergral active steering means you can change direction like a housefly. Dynamically, the i5 M60 really embraces the M aspect we have all come to love from BMW. Despite sporting a kerb weight of 2300kg, it doesn’t feel heavy, but rather spirited and lively. It’s a genuine hoot to drive, whether sedately or enthusiastically.
It’s unlikely the i5 will match BMW’s other i models in terms of volume locally and starting at $201,600, it’s certainly up there price wise, but this is a genuinely spell binding package with insane performance and dynamic prowess. If I were a baddie and needed a Ronin-style getaway, this would easily be on the shortlist.
