EDITOR’S PERSPECTIVE
T
he highlight of my week was the Fanfare Celebration event held in the Mashina Lounge at the Christchurch Casino recently. Christchurch history was made as guests watched the live feed of Neil Dawson's Fanfare being switched on for the first time. This permanent landmark – six-storey's high with 360, 1.5m pinwheel fans is New Zealand's largest public sculpture and sits beside the Northern Motorway to welcome people into our renewing city. Fanfare struck a particular chord with me this week as I had just returned from Melbourne where their public art is outstanding. Think of their giant Ferris wheel lit and looking spectacular in the city scape. The flame towers running the length of the Crown Casino promenade, and on a smaller scale the quirky statues and art that is scattered around the CBD and in the laid-back laneways. I hadn't put a lot of thought into public art until recently, and so when I had the chance to ask Deborah McCormick, Director of Scape Public Art Trust about what public art means to her and how it is evolving in Christchurch it was a fascinating insight into how these subtle (and not so subtle) introductions change the vibe of a city and create its identity (pages 8, 9). Creative writing is also a wonderful art and Flash Fiction is a fascinating and thought-provoking form. The shortest story ever written is just six words long and attributed to Ernest Hemingway. Read that story and others in fewer than 55 words (pages 14, 15) and you may be lured into joining in on Flash Fiction Day on 22 June. Continuing the arty theme this issue we have Showbiz back in full swing, expression through fashion, and inspiration for a black and white home interior theme. Unleash your creative side this winter and enjoy a wonderful adventure of the mind.

KIWI TEAM IN NEPAL Christchurch's Sam Johnson has helped organise the construction of 70 transitional shelters in outlying areas of Nepal that have had no assistance since the devastating April earthquakes. Johnson, who founded and led the Student Volunteer Army after the Christchurch earthquakes, has joined forces with the RiseNepal organisation to build temporary homes in the village of Chaimale, about three hours from Kathmandu. His mission has the support of Air New Zealand and other benefactors. “We have an ambitious goal of putting up 1000 shelters or homes. We had a group of 10 young Nepali volunteers help our New Zealand team collect and organise roofing iron, framing and wire. Johnson's team is also helping the Friends of Himalayan Children Inc. lead by Nepali Som Tamang who is focusing on the hardest hit areas of mountain villages where most homes and schools collapsed in the earthquake.

rt, and in particular public art, is a life motivator for Deborah McCormick. Director of SCAPE Public Art Trust and its Christchurch Biennials, Deborah gets a buzz out of assisting in making free public art challenge our senses, every day, in and around the city. Her vision is for Cantab’s to be excited, engaged and stimulated by contemporary art. Take for example the recently installed Fanfare – a bold, contemporary, large-scale sculpture that is 20 metres in diameter with 360 onemetre wide, wind-powered pinwheels that welcome people into the city elegantly by day and spectacularly when lit at night. Public Art gets us talking, challenges our imaginations and puts soul and character into our city. I caught up with Deborah to discover more about her love of art…
Deborah
McCormick You have a Bachelor of Fine Arts from UC; what inspired you to study the arts? Creativity, in many shapes, has always inspired me and has been integral to my life. From a very young age I was involved with drawing, collage, sewing, crafts, music and theatre. But it was my art teacher, Nancy Bracey (at Christchurch Girls’ High School) who encouraged me to apply to the School of Fine Arts at The University of Canterbury. Her husband, Ted Bracey, was head of the school at the time.
What is your personal creative forte? My Fine Arts Major is Photography. My early work included development of large scale photographic installations exploring gender politics and identity. Do you continue with this endeavour personally or commercially? While I don’t currently make much of my own work, I have been known to make the odd work for friends and family, for special occasions, from my overseas travels.

What led you into making public art, and art and industry consulting a career? My mum said to me one day, as graduation drew near, “So dear, what are you going to do with this expensive degree?” There weren’t many openings for young arts graduates in Christchurch back in 1998! So I took a proposal for a one-off exhibition called ‘Art and Industry’ to the Council’s arts adviser Warren Pringle. Together we set up a Trust and co-directed the first Biennial series of works in 2000. 17 years, 160 temporary and 9 permanent works later, I’m still working in the same field. I am very fortunate to have worked with some of the greatest current artists in New Zealand and internationally. I thrive on working with artists from their concept ideas to then bringing specialists together to make their artistic vision and concept a reality. You are influential in the installation of both temporary and permanent public art. Which top three are the most thought-provoking temporary installations? Amongst those would be; Ziggurat (2000) by Pauline Rhodes, See Change (2008) by James Oram and Ahakoa he iti (2004) by Keri Whatiri & Rachael Rakena. Ziggurat was a large pyramid structure that was formed out of gabions and river stones at 10 metres square rising to 5 metres in height placed in Hagley Park. See Change saw a single-person sailing dinghy suspended from a rotating tower crane over Cranmer Square. This was making comment on two important symbols of the transformation in Christchurch’s urban development: the boats and ships from the past and the cranes from the present. Ahakoa he iti was produced as part of Lightscape and was a projection and sound based work onto a rock in front of Christchurch Cathedral.
“
We can become a destination known the world over for its impressive and eclectic public and street art collection.
And permanent? For me, Fanfare by Neil Dawson recently completed at Chaney’s Corner, Tree Houses for Swamp Dwellers on the corner of Colombo and Gloucester Street and Solidarity Grid by Mischa Kuball in Park Terrace. As a city we have been fortunate to have been gifted several permanent installations, which have captured the public’s imagination most? I think Fanfare; this is due to the sheer scale and beauty of the piece. Not only that, Fanfare has a story of journeying back to Christchurch from Sydney. There are also the fascinating engineering aspects with its 360 degree fans that rotate in the wind and breaking system (that slows the spinning fans in high winds). Moreover it signals a welcome, lighting the way from Canterbury to the city. As a city how do you think we are doing with our public art presentations? Following the earthquakes Christchurch has had a proliferation of public and street art activity. When many of the galleries were damaged or closed the arts community and
artists took to the streets. For me this is exhilarating and I strongly believe that Christchurch can and will, build on the great work done through the transitional period. We can become a destination known the world over for its impressive and eclectic public and street art collection. What do you enjoy most about the art industry? Being an enabler. I love working at the interface of artists and industry, problem solving and delivering great art. My passion drives me to think big, push boundaries, seek out teams of experts and the very best artists in New Zealand and internationally. On a more personal note; what is your favourite item of clothing? A red wool Kate Sylvester coat with brass buttons. What is one thing Metropol readers would be surprised to know about you? I enjoy equestrian, dressage, show jumping, cross country and I’m keen to get an all-terrain motorbike

200 years on 200 years ago, on Sunday 18 June 1815, the Duke of Wellington's Anglo-allied soldiers fought against Napoleon's French army in the Battle of Waterloo. The short but furious struggle marked the end of 20 years of conflict and began an era of peace which lasted nearly half a century. Over 190,000 visitors will make the trip to Waterloo in the next couple of months, with over 50% of those attending or appearing in the battle re-enactments marking the anniversary. This is almost the exact same amount of visitors as the 174,000 soldiers who fought in the battle 200 years ago.
Fanfare DIARY THIS A new permanent landmark can be seen standing tall over the Canterbury Plains. Neil Dawson's Fanfare, New Zealand's largest public sculpture, has been officially presented and illuminated. This visionary six-storey-high sphere is covered in 1.5 metre steel pinwheel fans and can be illuminated in a spectrum of colours at night.

THE FLASH FICTION ORGANISING COMMITEE
WHEN LESS IS MORE The shortest day of the year, Monday, June 22, appears to be the perfect choice to celebrate National Flash Fiction Day (NFFD) with samples of small but perfectly formed short short-stories.
T
his free literary event, to be held in Christchurch from 6-8pm at The Twisted Hop, 616 Ferry Road, Woolston, will occur at the same time as the Auckland and Wellington award events. Morrin Rout, well known literary presenter, will compere the evening. Open to the general public and for readers and writers alike, the highlights of the event will include readings from Christchurch writers, the announcement of the National Flash Fiction Award competition and the South Island Writers' Association Flash Fiction Day competition.
Celebrated writer Owen Marshall, a judge of this year's NFFD competition, will announce the winners, as well as read from his own work. Co-organiser of the event, Frankie McMillan, explains that flash fiction stories typically range from 300 to 500 words, although what has been described as a six-word story is attributed to Ernest Hemingway. It simply reads: "For sale: baby shoes, never worn." "Most short short-stories follow the traditional structure, with a beginning, middle and end, and usually focus on a character. They're short on words but

long on depth," says Frankie. "However others can be more a-slice-of-life approach or are experimental. "I'm a writer and poet, and this form suits my abilities - using words and images to suggest something larger. Flash fiction also forces the writer to use language economically and effectively." The evening will also see the New Zealand launching of a book, "The Norton International Anthology of Flash Fiction", which includes work by local writers Frankie McMillan and James Norcliffe. To add to the fun, spot prizes will be given throughout the evening.

SOBER INTELLIGENCE by Sage Romano I watched some fool stumble out of the bar and into a car. When he swerved down the road, I pulled him over and administered a field test that proved nothing. He requested a blood test; there was no alcohol in his blood. “What's your game, pal?” “I'm the D.D.” “Designated driver?” “Designated decoy.”
BEDTIME STORY by Jeffrey Whitmore “Careful, honey, it's loaded,” he said, re-entering the bedroom. Her back rested against the headboard. “This for your wife?” “No. Too chancy. I'm hiring a professional.” “How about me?” He smirked. “Cute. But who'd be dumb enough to hire a lady hit man?” She wet her lips, sighting along the barrel. “Your wife.”
GRATITUDE by Andrew E. Hunt The street lights were a warm welcome from the oncoming chill of darkness. The parkbench's curvature felt familiar under his tired old spine. The wool blanket from the Salvation Army was comfortable around his shoulders and the pair of shoes he'd found in the dumpster today fit perfectly. God, he thought, isn't life grand.

oagan is a singer and songwriter whose music is inspired by the traditional Kanak rhythm from New Caledonia. “My music creates bridges, brings together and confronts,” says the young artist, whose style is unique, merging contemporary and traditional sounds, offering reggae, rock and soul, in which the rhythm is created by bamboo sticks.

World-class company in full swing After an extended hiatus due to earthquake interruption, Showbiz Christchurch is back in full swing to provide us with much-needed, world-class fully staged musicals at the Isaac Theatre Royal.
T
he not-for-profit production company has been presenting outstanding musical theatre since 1938, when it began as the Christchurch Operatic Society Inc, but was put out of action by the second major earthquake in February 2011. Showbiz Christchurch came back into full production in April of this year with a sell-out season of Andrew Lloyd Weber's The Phantom of the Opera. To further get Christchurch's foremost producer of musical theatre going again, in May it appointed as general manager Michael Bayly, who has extensive experience in both business and the performing arts. Michael brings a broad and nuanced background to the position and, under his guidance, Showbiz is now preparing for its second post-earthquake production, Monty Python's Spamalot, which starts at the Isaac Theatre Royal on September 4 – exactly five years after the first earthquake. Showbiz's last season at the Isaac
Theatre Royal before it was closed by the February 2011 quake was Sweeney Todd, which was staged during October 2010. In the following February, they were already preparing their next production, which was to be Spamalot. By the time of the second quake, the cast were underway, in full rehearsal for Spamalot, which was scheduled to begin on April 1. During the quake itself, Showbiz's wardrobe department was working at its Balfour Terrace premises, sewing the armour suits for the Knights of Ni, a bunch of spoof characters in this musical comedy set in the times of the legendary King Arthur. The power went out, the sewing machines stopped and the staff had to leave the building. They were not permitted back in for three months but, on their return, switched on the machines and completed the armour. A huge Excalibur sword, which was also at the Balfour Terrace building, was bent out of shape when a wall collapsed on it.

“Over 24,000 people came to see The Phantom and every reviewer said this version was better than any other they had seen previously. No expense was spared. The sound, lighting, set and costumes were all world class.”
Excalibur is now being reshaped. Based on the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spamalot follows the exploits of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table in pursuit of the Holy Grail through a variety of ludicrously loopy settings, accompanied by a bevy of beautiful girls, not to mention flying cows, a killer rabbit and even some rude French people. Showbiz has reopened in new premises at 369 St Asaph Street, which include its offices, rehearsal studios and other facilities for the preparation of its big productions.
And after the huge success of The Phantom of the Opera, Michael is already confident that Spamalot will also prove to be a big hit. “Over 24,000 people came to see The Phantom and every reviewer said this version was better than any other they had seen previously. No expense was spared. The sound, lighting, set and costumes were all world class. Our local talent were so passionate about the experience that it gave the audience an evenbigger experience. The end result was truly world-class,” says Michael. After Spamalot, Showbiz already has plans for Mamma Mia!, Hairspray and Evita in 2016.

A NEW CHAPTER IN THE CBD For the Christchurch office of chartered accountants Staples Rodway an exciting chapter in their history is now being written.
“W
e've very recently moved into new offices in the Tavendale Centre on Durham Street, opposite the law courts,” says Spencer Smith, director of Staples Rodway. It's an extremely safe, strong and energy-efficient building, with enough space for us to grow into the future. It's nice also to have dedicated meeting rooms for our clients which provide all the technology and amenities you'd expect. There's also ample parking onsite and that's a real plus for our clients.” For the team at Staples Rodway the 'plus' is also that their new premises are situated among the many financial and professional services firms that are congregating on the western edge of the central city. This will be very convenient for client meetings involving lawyers, bankers and other professionals.
“It's been a two-year transition period for our staff and our clients,” says Spencer. “People have been very patient, but now we are just happy to be settled and able to give our full attention to providing clients with our depth of expertise in all aspects of accountancy, tax and business advice.”
“PEOPLE have been very patient, we are HAPPY to be settled.”

When Amaya opened its doors early this year, owner Kitty Chin knew the exact experience that she wanted to create for her clients.
“I
want my clients to leave the world behind and to opt for the ultimate in relaxation and wellbeing in an intimate environment,” says Kitty. “It is important to have time to ourselves and we invite our clients to leave their busy life at the door.” Amaya specialises in traditional Chinese massages, from full body massages and foot therapies to cupping and thermal therapies. Amaya's signature foot therapies are guided by Oriental heritage, but influenced by local cultural diversity, with different parts of the body mapped out on the sole of each foot. Treatments focus on relaxation and relieving any stress or pain which clients may be experiencing and are designed to bring balance and equilibrium to meet the needs of each individual. Massage therapist, Angelic, has 20 years of experience in body therapy and is an advocate for the many health benefits her clients receive from the array of treatments available, including improved sleep and digestion as well as weight loss. “I enjoy helping people,” says

The Perfect Antidote to Stress Forget stress, work and winter weather, Beauty Progress offers the perfect antidote. Owned by award-winning therapist Wendy Barker, I find an oasis of beauty treatments to soothe both the skin and the soul.
I
begin with a Thai body massage by Anne, whose expert training in Thailand has been much sought after since she joined Beauty Progress three years ago. Lulled by gentle music and surrounded by Thai-inspired décor, Anne can tame the knots and niggles in your muscles, release the tension in your joints and massage your scalp, neck and temples with just the right amount of pressure for you to remain at ease. Every muscle group is soothed, smoothed and stretched. Then my aches and pains melt away with divine hot herbal pressure pads, like hot stones, only softer! All too soon the massage finishes with a hot towel wrap soaked in fragrant oils and a refreshing drink of water or Thai green tea. I am loath to leave and so are my muscles. But next, it's time to complete my “top to toe” pampering with a facial and relaxation treatment with Wendy. Her extensive experience includes being invited to distribute France's superior GERnetic skin care range into New Zealand. First formulated to heal third degree burns, its 200 different plant extracts deliver all the nutrients to the skin that aren't being fully supplied through nutrition. A
background in design and a love for jewellery led Michaela to her position at Harrington's, where her work involves everything from assisting customers to working with their network of local craftspeople and training new staff. “I've been making my own jewellery since I was a little kid,” says Michaela, who describes herself as obsessed with jewellery as a child. From simple beads on a string she moved onto completing a Degree in Design at CPIT, which included a range of visual arts and silversmith skills. Her knowledge of the structural aspect to designing a piece of jewellery is invaluable when working with customers, many of whom have a specific design in mind. Taking their design idea as a starting point, Michaela and the other experienced staff at Harrington's work with each customer to discuss design options, with an extensive catalogue of work to draw from. “The look on people's faces, when they are so thrilled with the resulting piece, is the highlight of my work,” says Michaela. KIDSZONE
Eyesight & learning difficulties
We focus on providing the educational staples of reading, 'riting and 'rithmetic, yet sometimes our children don't have one of the most basic building blocks for achievement.
I
t has been estimated that as much as 80 percent of the learning a child does occurs through their eyes and, although you may not make the link between the optometry field and learning difficulties, it is an area the team at Anstice & Associates Optometrists is all too familiar with. We often assume if a child can see well at close range their vision is working well and this is often the biggest barrier to parents having children assessed. Yet a thorough optometric assessment will often unlock visual instabilities behind reading and learning difficulties. Having tested thousands of children with learning difficulties, Anstice & Associates has found there is often a visual component to dyslexia, dyspraxia and specific learning disorders. Anstice & Associates Optometrists practice Schoolvision principles – specific
Jeremy and Dharshie techniques designed to uncover the hidden visual instabilities that can cause a child to read and learn poorly. An Anstice Schoolvision Assessment goes beyond general optometric testing to uncover visual instabilities that can be stabilised using specialist prescription lenses. The only Schoolvision trained children specialists in New Zealand, Anstice & Associates Optometrists' directors Jeremy Fox and Dharshie Hughes are passionate about helping children reach their full academic potential.
“Seeing these children progress rapidly at school once the mechanical visual barriers have been eliminated is exciting and rewarding. Their self-confidence soars along with this. It can take as little as putting on a pair of specs in class to achieve results.” Visit the Facebook page to see some of the success stories as families share their Schoolvision journey www.facebook.com/ansticeoptometrists.

HOT PIE hunting
J
oining the panel of expert judges this year is top NZ chef, food columnist and author Martin Bosley. Bosley says as the most egalitarian of dishes, it is unsurprising Kiwis have an enduring love affair with the humble pie. “For a brief moment in time, it doesn't matter who you are or what you do, nothing else matters when you have a decent pie. “Whether it's a crisp pastry base soaked with sauce or gravy, with a burnished, golden pastry top, or, an open one with a creamy filling over a soft under crust. A pie can be a classic or something with a modern twist, something new yet familiar with a filling that both delights and surprises.”
Pie makers around the country are rolling up their sleeves as they prepare to compete in the 19th annual Bakels New Zealand Supreme Pie Awards.
With entries being judged across 12 categories, and 49 awards to be won, Bakels managing director and judge Brent Kersel says the level of competition heightens every year. “In past years we've had entries of pork and puha, pork and watercress, a myriad of sweet pies and last year we had the impressive lamb cutlet pie take away the Supreme Award. It's always interesting to see what the competition turns up as our bakers continue to push the boundaries.” Winners of the 2015 Bakels New Zealand Supreme Pie Award will be announced on Tuesday 21 July.

REAL FOOD EXPLOSION:
When bear met lion by Hans Petrovic
Alesha Bilbrough-Collins believes in “real food” and offers it to public through her BearLion Foods delicatessen at Brighton and her Saturday stall at the Christchurch Farmers’ Market at Dean’s Bush, Riccarton.

T
o her, “real food” can cover just about everything, as long as it’s actual food that is good, healthy and seasonal, with flavour and fresh ingredients, organic and local. It also means applying fine-dining standards to everyday food. Alesha’s incredible knowledge of the ingredients available can be seen in the variety of the ever-changing range of salads available at the deli.
On a recent visit, the four salads of the day consisted of: · Miso roasted eggplant, avocado, coriander, activated buckwheat, chilli and nigella seeds · Organic beetroot, kale, dill oil, roasted apple and nutritional yeast · Organic mixed rice, peas, cashews, roast-garlic omelette, lemon zest and Vietnamese mint, and · Organic roasted carrots, dried tomatoes, fenugreek yoghurt, currants and pickled walnuts. Alesha carefully layers the ingredients so that each individual flavour is identifiable and each component works in harmony with the others. I took home the eggplantavocado salad and was amazed just how distinct all the flavours were. There’s also a range of other offerings at both BearLion Foods and the farmers’ market, featuring a wide range of
ingredients, some of which you may never have heard of. Depending where and when you go, you may find a wasabi and spirulina guacamole, bacon hand-cured with organic coconut sugar, banana and hemp seed cake, chilli jam, lamb and pork sausages completely free of artificial preservatives, flavourings and fillers.

“I’m always learning about different ingredients, some inspired by childhood memories like putting nutritional yeast on toast, which is high in Vitamin B12. This is why our food and flavours change all the time,” says Alesha. “I was a privileged child, growing up in the Marlborough Sounds. My mother was a fantastic cook and my father was a keen hunter who taught me about the wonders of the outdoors. I always wanted to use what Mother Earth provides.”
Depending where and when you go, you may find a wasabi and spirulina guacamole, bacon hand-cured with organic coconut sugar, banana and hemp seed cake, or chilli jam lamb.
Alesha started at the CPIT for a cooking certificate at the age of 16. Her first job in Christchurch was at the Honeypot Café in Lichfield Street, where she learned how a kitchen was run. Then, it was on to Australia, including the Catalina fine-dining waterfront restaurant at Rose Bay, Sydney. The most inspirational influences were in London, working for Ramsay Holding’s Maze Restaurant and then moving onto working at one of the Ottolenghi delicatessens. Founded by renowned Israeli/British chefs and restaurant-owners Yotam Ottolenghi and Sami Tamimi, this turned out to be the deli of her dreams. Alesha acknowledges that the time spent there shaped her career. Also specialising in salads, the chefs working for Ottolenghi were constantly encouraged to

taste everything to ensure nothing short of perfection left the kitchen. Ottolenghi’s basic philosophy was to make people happy with his food – and this is also a major driving force for Alesha, who is also constantly mindful of the health factor, particularly after having to be treated for chemical poisoning caused by pesticide and weedkiller. “We have to ask ourselves where our food is coming from. I saw the extreme need for real food, especially at the takeaway level.” says Alesha. “There is also need for focus on education in food choices, including good fats, natural sweetness, organics, raw and living foods, without the use of refined white sugar or flour.” BearLion Foods caters to people with food allergies. STEAK
With Jeremy Ray, Head Chef, The Villas
As a chef it's a luxury to be able to go to a friend's barbeque, as weekends are generally when we are at our busiest and I'm working. So when we were invited to a friends' place recently I couldn't turn it down. While there was no doubt the quality of the meat would be discussed, especially as these were farming friends, another question did come up, “Do you think it is ready?” A piece of advice I received quite early on in my career from a family friend was “If you want a good steak, the first thing you need is a good butcher.” Which is why, here at The Villas, we use Peter Timbs for all of our meat supplies - their meat is always of a high standard. When shopping for meat you want a good amount of fat/marbling to keep the meat moist, it also gives a better flavour to your steak. When you are cooking the perfect steak, how do you gauge when it's ready? You can spend money on a digital probe which is fine for larger cuts, but I prefer the “prod test” that's where you poke the steak, and then with the tip of your index finger lightly touching the tip of your thumb on your left hand, poke the meaty part at the base of the thumb with your right index finger. If they feel the same you have rare, move your thumb to the next finger and you have medium rare, and so on. However, this can take practice. Until you get it right, we have teamed up with the guys at First Light, home of 100% grass fed Wagyu to offer some of their best strip loin with a 7-9 marble count, cooked the way you like it for a limited time. For all you Pete's out there, pop down and see us at The Villas.
CAULIFLOWER MASH My kids would never eat cauliflower, but they do eat cauliflower mash…. Because they think it is mashed potato! My thirteen-year-old son says 'thanks mum for making me mash potato' which just makes me giggle! This mash is beautiful and it goes so well with pork chops or any main meal. INGREDIENTS 1/2 head cauliflower 2 tablespoons olive oil Salt & pepper to taste METHOD The trick to making a good cauliflower mash is to steam the cauliflower so that it is not too watery. Bring to the boil a large saucepan of water, (the saucepan needs to fit a steamer). Cut the cauliflower into pieces and include the stalks, place in the steamer and put the lid on. Steam for 20 minutes or until the cauliflower is tender. Once cooked place the cauliflower into the food processor, along with the olive oil, salt and pepper. Blitz until very smooth. You can mash it by hand but it is very hard to get a smooth consistency. Serve the mash with fresh herbs.

A WARMING THOUGHT Dunedin-based gas fireplace designer and manufacturer Escea have created an animation which explains their Multiroom Heat Ducting Technology.
E
scea's DX Series fireplaces are high heat output, high efficiency, smartphone controlled fireplaces. However, a winning factor of these ultra-wide gas fireplaces is their ability to heat multiple rooms via heat ducting. Escea DX Series fireplaces evenly distribute heat within the same room as the fireplace, warming the farthest corners with the heat ducts. Additionally, these heat ducts can be used to heat other rooms. As winter steadily continues, the idea of turning a fireplace on and heating several rooms in the house is definitely a warming thought. The unique technology also allows you to control your fireplace wirelessly through your smartphone. Turn on your fireplace as you leave the office to come home to a toasty warm abode. BACK TO THE Designed in collaboration with Italy's Matteo Bazzicalupo and Raffaella Mangiarotti of Deep Design Studio, Smeg's new collection delivers on each of the small electrical appliances deemed essential in any kitchen – toaster, kettle, blender and signature kitchen mixer.
‘50s E
ach appliance is true to its genetic heritage by paying homage to the Golden Age of the '50s. Indeed, the beautiful aesthetics of the stand mixer and toaster have already received the GOOD DESIGN Award from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design plus the prestigious international iF Design Award for 2015. There are up to seven colours – silver, black, red, panna and pastel blue across the range - plus pastel green and pink for the kettles and two slice toaster. And while style is always a standout feature of any Smeg appliance, it goes hand in hand with the brand's commitment to the very latest technology and highest performance. The kitchen mixer, for example, sets new benchmarks in terms of power and versatility. Attributes include 800W high torque motor, 10 speed variable power and the all-important soft start (no more splatters when starting at a high speed) and a planetary mixing action to ensure all areas of the bowl are reached. There is also a low-speed front attachment hub for optional attachments such as pasta roller and cutters. For more information go to www.smeg.com.au.

Canterbury Revolving Bookcase available at Ambrose Heal.
A
t Little River Gallery there is always the anticipation of new exhibitions to admire and exclaim over. Right now is no exception. From 13 June – 8 July the gallery is featuring an exhibition called “Contempo” – works by Brent Forbes and Monique Lacey. Brent's paintings are based on a holiday he had at Birdlings Flat. They are moodily evocative of that place at the edge of the sea, hemmed in by hills and with its BY MONIQUE LACEY eclectic collections of dwellings. Monique's works are inspired by surface and texture and the paintings are built up using numerous layers of paint, some of which are subsequently removed to reveal parts of previous layers. She uses a variety of mediums, both oil and acrylic, and manipulates the paint with different tools and brushes. Besides these art works the gallery has its usual wide range of giftware and jewellery available.

Ÿ Decide on your theme: modern, minimal, art deco, rococo, etc. and keep to the plan to avoid any disconnection.
Ÿ Choose a third accent colour, for example: the natural colour of a tan wood, a cool neutral in aqua, or a bright splash in lime green or sunflower yellow.
Ÿ In the bedroom use the high contrast colour scheme behind the headboard or on surfaces you don't see when you are trying to fall asleep.

One-off boutique homes While the ability to build a house is a learned skill, translating the often unspoken wants and needs of a third party into a physical reality is a task few can master. Yet it is this very skill which has seen Christchurch building firm Baylis Exclusive Homes make a significant mark on the local landscape.
W
e believe that every client is different and requires a tailor-made build to fit their lifestyle,” company director Adam Baylis says. “Only then are they likely to be truly satisfied with the finished product.” Specialising in designing and building one-off, boutique homes of the highest standard and specification, Baylis Exclusive Homes can work with existing plans or provide a contracted architectural service to meet your needs.
Working in partnership with a specially chosen team of designers, in particular renowned architect John Curtin, Baylis Exclusive Homes can create that uniquely perfect home, taking clients through the process step by step. “We want to reassure clients that the house designed for them is a one-off and will not be seen replicated down the street,” Adam explains. “Clear and open communication with
our clients is fundamental to the way we operate. We work with them, listening to their ideas and requirements and then supplement these with our extensive industry expertise.” A Baylis Exclusive Homes site is far from the chaotic building sites we've come to know all too well in our corner of the country. An on-site checklist lists 700 points which are signed off before job is considered complete. “We're extremely organised and this enables us to control on-site timeframes,” Adam says.
Every house will be SENSATIONAL in both DESIGN and QUALITY – nothing but THE BEST.

“We want to REASSURE CLIENTS that the house designed for them is A ONE-OFF and will NOT BE seen REPLICATED down the street.”
With more than 15 years of experience in the construction industry, both here and overseas, including specialising in high-end retail store fit-outs in London, Adam knows what it takes to create a masterpiece.
Back in Christchurch and with a sharpened passion for quality, he established Baylis Exclusive Homes to further that concept in the residential sector. “In no way are we a volume builder. We will construct no more
than 10 houses a year, but every house will be sensational in both design and quality – nothing but the best. “Producing only the highest quality product is our goal.” Baylis Exclusive Homes' first showhome will be available for viewing by appointment only at the Waitikiri Golf Course, later this year. The split-level 385 square metre John Curtin designed home will feature six bedrooms, four bathrooms and four living areas. The local firm also has new homes underway in the Preston's subdivision and one on a hill site on Dyers Pass Road. “It's a really exciting time to be in the building industry as there is so much opportunity available for creativity and innovation.” Thinking of building a new home and want something distinctive then contact Adam on 021 0831 7456 or email info@baylisexclusivehomes.co.nz, or to find out more about Exclusive Homes visit www.baylisexclusivehomes.co.nz.

ZERO POWER BILLS
S
ince 2002 electricity prices have almost doubled and have risen at three times the cost of inflation, meaning lower income households now face fuel poverty. It's not just about money. Recently in the news there have been reports of deaths that have been directly attributed to mouldy, cold, damp homes. This is very sad and unacceptable for
and more energy efficient and it is a myth that it's too expensive,” Bob says. “Those that think it's too costly are not aware of how to integrate the best systems, techniques and building methodologies. It's what smart people want and it's not rocket-science.” One single-storey and one adjacent two-storey home, the designs were initially rated as NZ's first 9-star homes
WHY CAN'T ALL NEW HOMES HAVE ZERO POWER BILLS? New Zealand. Unfortunately cold, mouldy houses are a common problem and even some recently built homes have serious issues with cold, moisture and mould. Poor design and low code minimum standards result in homes that rate around 3 stars out of 10. Most of us have heard of the Homestar rating system which is essentially a measure of the
quality, health and comfort of a dwelling and its energy use and other important environmental and design considerations. Bob Burnett Architecture are behind two new demonstration homes nearing completion in Addington's Church Square that are modest in size and affordable with zero power bills. “We can easily do much better to make our homes healthier
The future is in your hands, choose geothermal heating when you build...
and with some added innovations will very soon be completed to a built rating of 10-stars. Innovations include new super-efficient combined low-cost, in-slab and domestic hot water heating systems, which together with slab-edge insulation and excellent thermal design throughout reduce required heating and equipment

the world, ind the rest of h be r fa so re “We' game and these homes it's time to step up our mark.” t a new bench se to y an m t of will be the firs size to the extent it can be powered by PV solar panels. Effectively this is a combination of good design and integrating existing technologies utilising free heat from the sun. An innovative new wall framing system, 'frame-saver' offers multiple benefits including improved thermal performance and strength. “The Building Code is used as the target and many wrongly assume the code equates to quality when it's simply the legal minimum.” There is an obsession with minimum
initial build cost per square metre and maximising size, underestimating the long term ongoing costs associated with owning a home, he says. “We've been saying for some time now that affordability is not just about cheap houses, it's about the cost of ownership, the ongoing running costs and the return on investment. “A little extra thought and good design from the outset will lead to a lifetime of savings and good health.” Environmental design is a topic close to Bob's heart, marked by the Energy
Efficiency Conservation Authority (EECA) award for energy leadership last year. “We're so far behind the rest of the world, it's time to step up our game and these homes will be the first of many to set a new benchmark.” Bob has been offering a unique opportunity to view the houses prior to completion, enabling industry and public to view the internal details before they are completed. furniture setting. This then leads on to a main outdoor dining courtyard which is usually a paved area separated from the house to maximise the afternoon sun. In all areas structural elements such as fireplaces, raised planters, louvre roofs and prevailing wind screens are great tools to enclose the outdoor spaces while providing functionality and personality in a design.
“We are able to achieve the best results when we are engaged early, while house plans are being developed,” Hayden explains. “We can assist with the orientation and location of a house within a property in order to maximise sun hours and provide easterly protection for the outdoor courtyard spaces.” Start planning your courtyard now to get it ready for use this summer. A GUIDE TO
HEATING To answer this question, Goldair has created a comprehensive guide that provides advice on electric heating solutions. For most homes: Micathermic Heaters Ÿ Heat up fast, thereby saving energy Ÿ Double sided heating makes it great for larger spaces Ÿ Run quietly Ÿ Have no glowing parts so are safe for the whole family
WHEN QUALITY COUNTS Shane 021796255 e. shane@ainsworthbuilders.co.nz www.ainsworthbuilders.co.nz
With so many choices of heater available and so many different heating requirements, the question remains “how do I choose the right heater for my home?”
For drafty environments: Radiant Heaters Ÿ Radiant heaters heat people and objects – not rooms or air Ÿ Use quartz or halogen tubes to generate heat much like that produced by the sun Ÿ Great for instant heat when you come home cold Ÿ Great people whose homes will not contain heat such as old villas or drafty homes Ÿ Provide a warm glow and ambiance
For prolonged use: Ecosave Panel Heater Ÿ These panels use only 425 watts Ÿ Lightweight and easy to install Ÿ Paintable surface to match any décor Ÿ Unobtrusively wall-mounted Ÿ Great option for small bedrooms For fast heat: Ceramic Heaters Ÿ Have no glowing parts making them family friendly Ÿ Fan forced to work quickly Ÿ Great for small rooms, quick heating and personal warmth Ÿ Wall mounted or tower versions can heat larger rooms with limited floor space For portable heat: Fan Heaters Ÿ Often the cheapest units to buy Ÿ Great for personal warmth, small rooms and short running periods Ÿ Small and portable to follow you around the home
For gradual heat in any room: Oil Heaters Ÿ Run quietly Ÿ Are portable Ÿ Great for gradual heating in any sized room For stylish heat that's easy to move: Convector Heaters Ÿ Use convection heating technology drawing air over a heated element Ÿ Are lightweight and portable Ÿ Suitable for medium to large rooms For space tight rooms: Panel Heaters Ÿ Great for lounges, hallways and bedrooms Ÿ Work on convection technology Ÿ Run quietly Ÿ Are complementary to a heat pump Ÿ Wall mountable for tight and tidy spaces For health, warmth, comfort, costefficiency and safety in your heating, check out the new Goldair “How do I choose the right heater?” guide; found in most stores where Goldair is sold or at www.goldair.co.nz.

LIGHT YEARS AHEAD The new Citroen C4 is a mid-life facelift of the old car with an all-new powertrain and a bunch of new equipment thrown in.
WHAT’S IT LIKE? Citroen has tweaked the C4 to be more focussed on ride comfort for this incarnation – with suspension changes and extra sound deadening – and it certainly shows.
FOR DIE-HARD CITROEN FANS THE NEW C4 REPRESENTS THE BEST C4
THE COMPANY HAS DONE FOR YEARS.
W
hat was a range of C4s has now been shrunk down to a single model – a specced-up auto-only car priced at $34,990. For that money you get the brilliant 96kW/230Nm turbocharged 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine that resides in our favourite version of the Peugeot 308, as well as that car’s equally brilliant six-speed automatic transmission. At the front, the C4 scores a new nose, with new headlights and LED daytime running lights. While up the back it is a similar story, with new taillights. The C4 also now comes standard with rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlights, keyless entry and start, 16-inch alloy wheels, electric mirrors, cornering lamps, an integrated 7-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation and dual zone climate control.
WHAT’S GOOD ABOUT IT? The brilliantly capable engine and transmission is a highlight, while the ride comfort and quality interior are also impressive. Basically, the single model of C4 is what Peugeot should have had with the 308 locally – a highspec model with the best drivetrain. For die-hard Citroen fans the new C4 represents the best C4 the company has done for years. Comfortable, quiet, economical and effortless to drive, the new C4 is light years ahead of the older car, particularly that car’s ancient four-speed automatic transmission. AUTO PLUS
By Damien O’Carroll
The Lexus RC F takes over from the IS F as the performance flagship in the Lexus line up (not counting the limited LF A, that is) and as such packs a revised version of the 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 that featured in the IS, but in an all-new two door coupe body that takes the Japanese manufacturer’s new styling language to its most aggressive extreme so far. We spend a week with one to see if we fall in love with it.
INSIDE
OUTSIDE Likes: Incredibly aggressive and elegant at the same time. New Lexus styling works brilliantly well here.
Dislikes: The way the nose drops off does make it hard to park – you really have no idea where the nose is and have to hope that the parking sensors pick up everything…
ON THE ROAD
Likes: Brilliant Lexus interior is incredibly distinctive, remarkably well made and extremely comfortable. Dislikes: No trick sliding gauges like in the IS. Touch pad control system is a pain.
VERDICT A superb looking car that offers big power, huge noise and lots of thrills… Price: $159,900
Quality European Cars
UNDER THE BONNET
Likes: Simply massive amounts of grip. Composed and capable over any surface. Trick rear diff is quite remarkable. Dislikes: Ride a little too harsh at low speeds. Keeps driver at arm’s length to the real fun.
Likes: 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 is angry and aggressive, yet pleasantly docile down low. Eight-speed automatic transmission is a smooth, dramafree delight. Surprisingly frugal for a petrol V8. Dislikes: Still the same odd delay between putting your foot down and the engine/transmission sorting itself out, except in Sport + mode, then it is feral and angry at the merest prod of the throttle. CARS OF THE WORLD Coventry Transport Museum, UK, has named the Ferrari F40, Porsche 911 Turbo, original Range Rover and Jaguar C-type as the first entries in a special Trailblazing Cars of the World display, as part of the museum's re-launch celebrations beginning this weekend.
T
he Ferrari F40 was the fastest and most expensive Ferrari of its time and was the first road-legal production car to break the 200mph (321.869km) barrier, while the Porsche 911 has been in production since 1963, making it one of the 'Cars of the 20th Century' and one of only two cars in history to have remained in continuous production for more than 50 years. The Turbo derivative of the 911 was the first commercially successful turbo performance car, becoming an instant automotive icon and led to the universal acceptance of the turbo as a way of boosting performance. Jaguar's Coventry-built C-type, in production from 1951 to 1953, pioneered the use of disc brakes, first used in the 1952 Le Mans 24-hour race, which the car won. Disc brakes went on to replace the traditional drum brakes on almost all new cars produced, saving countless lives and winning races all over the world with the same basic concept as pioneered on the C-type
The Ferrari F40 was the first road-legal production car to break the 200mph (321.869km) barrier. still being used today. The original Range Rover of 1970 established a whole new sector of all-terrain vehicle for Europe, and remains in production today as the pinnacle of luxury SUVs the world over. Culture Coventry chief executive Gary Hall says: “The Trailblazing Cars of the World line-up is one of the highlights of the re-launch celebrations following the Museum's NZ$20m redevelopment. We've been really excited to be able to name just some of the cars that will be on display – many of which were made here in Coventry.” Full details at www.transport-museum.com.

IMPOSING, DIGNIFIED,
POWERFUL C
ar names. It is a tricky art getting it just right. Coming up with a name that invokes the spirit of the car is a very hard thing to do – the Ford Probe, for example, failed quite badly at that when, instead of invoking images of a cutting-edge machine used for space exploration, it simply conjured up the idea of curious aliens. However, occasionally they do get them right. Ford triumphed with “Mustang”, while sister company Mercury created one of the best car names ever with the Mercury Marauder. Dodge Charger works, as does Viper, Challenger and Magnum. The Aussies never seemed quite as good as the Americans at coming up with good car names but HSV have a bit of a knack for it, and one of their cars has the most perfectly imposing name possible. It is the HSV Senator. And we were lucky enough to get our sweaty hands on one for a week…
Outside Big, imposing and far more dignified than anything else wearing the HSV badge (or even the Holden badge for that matter) the Senator looks like its name sounds.
Inside Magnificent electrically adjustable and heated leather seats are supremely comfortable and supportive.
Under the bonnet The 340kW/570Nm 6.2-litre LS3 V8 is a simply staggering engine. Huge power everywhere, yet remarkably tractable and usable at low revs/speeds. Six-speed auto transmission is capable of handling all the torque and power, yet still
manages to be quick and smooth in normal driving conditions. The noise that comes from every part of the powertrain is simply remarkable – at idle it is a big, threatening rumble, while at full throttle it is a bellowing, indignant roar. Awesome…
On the road The Magnetic Ride Control suspension standard in the Senator essentially brings the best of both worlds – a comfortable ride in “Touring”, while flicking the centre console dial around to “Sport” nicely firms things up for some serious attacking. Price: $105,990 [Abridged.] For more information go to www.oversteer.co.nz.
