Just as this issue heads to print, we head into the long weekend. For many, Labour Weekend marks the home straight to summer. Perhaps it is your yardstick for when it’s time to head to the beach, lake or bach. Or, maybe it’s an opportunity to slow down and take a breather before that final push to the end of year break. By the time this issue is back from the printers, you too will be back from whatever it was you chose to do. And in this issue we are – as we always do – sharing local stories from local people and businesses who make our Canterbury, Wanaka and Queenstown communities worth celebrating. he launch of W, a new custom suiting range for women, coincides with the retailer relocating from Merivale to a modern new store next to Riverside Market on Oxford Terrace, designed by awardwinning local architecture firm, PRau Studio. Founder and Managing Director Chris Dobbs and Christchurch-raised creative director Karl Clausen told Metropol how W is an extension of its bespoke tailored suiting offerings, but now, for women. The idea for the collection was sparked when staff member, Amanda Vine, had a men’s suit tailored for her to wear to work in the Christchurch store about two years ago. “That was the catalyst for the women’s collection,” says Chris. “We’ve been working on it for about 18-months now.

“We set out to learn what women wanted from suiting, we didn’t want to dictate to them what we thought they wanted, but we wanted to learn.” The resulting collection is impeccably tailored suit pants, jackets and shirting, which can be custom made for wearers in an array of luxurious fabrications selected from the in-store library of leather bound fabric sample books, before being made in Portugal. We’ve long searched for paradise, that idyllic place or state where everything is perfect and now, thanks to Kiwi singer songwriter Anderson Rocio, there are plenty more reasons to love paradise – a million to be precise.

hat’s how many Spotify streams Rocio’s latest song Paradise has had since the song made its global debut in a pivotal scene in season five of the popular Netflix series Lucifer. And while the numbers – which are still climbing – are impressive, what is perhaps even more so, is the fact that it was written and recorded in her bedroom in less than a day. “It is so inspiring. I never really feel like these songs come from me, just more ‘through’ me from somewhere else. But to know that people around the world are connecting to the art that I produce is, I think, an artist’s dream. It’s been my dream for a very long time!” The 26-year-old half Spanish, half American beauty was born in Italy, grew up in the UK and sailed the world on a 13.4 metre catamaran for three years with her family and a Yamaha p60 piano, before they settled in New Zealand when Rocio was 14. After graduating with a Bachelor in

Music, Classic Piano Performance from Otago University, she bought a one-way ticket to LA to pursue her music dream in 2017. It took 18 months, but she was eventually signed to a sync agency called THINK Music Inc in August 2018 on the back of her first EP, Darkerside, Rocio had released earlier that year. Occasionally THINK would send her briefs for “an uplifting, sweet song” or “something with the word forever in it” and last September there was a brief for a “happy, sad song”. “The turnover was quick,” she says. “I had a day to see what I could come up with!” Trawling YouTube news with the sound muted, provided the inspiration and Rocio managed to capture the dichotomy of the chaos taking place in the world, with the beauty of humanity. “I wrote, sang, played and recorded Paradise and sent it through without thinking a lot more about it,” she says. Like many things in life, it

ADISE didn’t happen overnight, but it did happen… five months later, when the sync agency asked to approve the use of Paradise for the Netflix show Lucifer. Rocio said “Awesome!” and quickly forgot about it, again. “You never know until close to when the show airs whether or not they’ll actually use it,” she laughs.

When she received the air date and confirmation of use – she was over the moon, but still unaware of how prominent the song would be in this show. The night before the screening, a close videographer friend put together some iPhone footage of Rocio at home in Queenstown during lockdown as a music video, in case anyone went in search of the artist behind the song. And on Friday August 21, they watched in anticipation the fifth episode of Lucifer season five, screening on Netflix in New Zealand. And, rather than simply background music, the song plays during a pivotal scene featuring the character Mazikeen, played by South African-born Kiwi actress Lesley-Ann Brandt. Her phone hasn’t stopped ringing and the notifications haven’t stopped pinging since. “It’s been amazing to see. For me, it’s one more step closer to getting to where I have always wanted to be,” Rocio says. “It’s been a gradual climb with my music and this is the biggest milestone yet. I still feel like I’m daydreaming, so it hasn’t really hit... even now. But I have become a lot busier! It also kinda feels like my birthday every time I wake up to see what new news has come through!”

Restriction is not sustainable. It’s about creating a happy, healthy lifestyle and having fun in the kitchen.

osa, 24, and Margo, 22, have eaten themselves back to health. Chronic fatigue left Margo bed bound for most of her final two years of high school, and injuryinducing disordered eating and over training saw Rosa break from her promising career as an elite runner. So, with their life plans derailed at just 18 and 20, respectively, the sisters flew to Plant Lab culinary school in Los Angeles. Here, Rosa says they learnt about the transformational power of eating wholefoods. “We were at our worst when we went over there,” she says. “We got so much more aware of food and what it could do for our health.” Margo says: “I had health professionals telling me there was nothing I could do about my chronic fatigue. When we went to America, I learned about gut health and got rid of my chronic fatigue in 12-months. “That’s when I learnt about the power of food and what effect it can have on your health and wellbeing.” For Rosa, she says her philosophy around food was tipped on its head, and she went on to study a Bachelor of Applied Science specialising in Human Nutrition. “When I look back now I did have a really bad relationship with food,” she says. “I thought anything I put in my body had to be super clean in order to be a successful athlete. She says the physical and mental stress she was putting on her body, “got to the point where I was told at 20 if I don’t make changes I physically won’t be able to do anything, especially not running.”

Now, that has changed. “When you take the time to look into eating in a healthy way, not dieting all the time, you realise how good you can feel - people are just so used to feeling average they think it’s normal that they are always bloated or that they have no energy when it hits 3pm every day - we want to make it easy and affordable for people.” Which is the ethos behind their culinary brand, Two Raw Sisters. Based at The Welder development on Welles Street in the central city, the sisters run cooking workshops which centre around using pantry staples and fresh ingredients. They have just published their second book, All Eaters Welcome. They also dismantle others’ misconceptions around food. For example, many assume they are vegan. “People assume we’re vegan and all we eat is raw food whereas we don’t follow a diet of any sort,” says Rosa. Instead, the pair’s definition of “plant based” means starting a meal with plants, and then adding the meat, dairy, fish, poultry, tofu or tempeh on the side, if you choose. Margo adds: “Restriction is not sustainable. It’s about creating a happy, healthy lifestyle and having fun in the kitchen – otherwise it’s just so stressful.” And Rosa says the concept appears to have wide appeal. “We cater to all age groups, we have 18-year-olds right through to 80-year-olds, males and females - we’ve made something people are interested in, and which we actually do in our everyday lives. “Our book is called All Eaters Welcome because we want to welcome all eaters into the kitchen.” All Eaters Welcome is out now.

He spent two years stacking supermarket shelves to pay his bills while working 12 hour days as a ﬂedgling real estate agent. Now, he’s in the top one percent of Harcourts’ global performers. Metropol catches up with Harcourts Grenadier’s Jonny Nicholls about what it takes to get to the top – before you even turn 30.

t 29-years-old, Christchurch real estate agent Jonny Nicholls sits amongst the region’s frequent top performers. But just five years ago, as a fresh University of Canterbury Bachelor of Arts graduate, Jonny initially fancied a career in sports journalism or property valuation. That was until a conversation with the only real estate agent he knew set him on his current path, and he successfully applied for a job at Harcourts Grenadier City Office. The only problem was – he had to make sales to earn commission. “I followed advice to tap into my network of homeowners, but at the time I only knew four; my brother, my sister and two of the coaches at my rugby club – and none of them wanted to buy or sell. “I worked out that I needed $350 a week to pay all my bills, so I took a job at Coca-Cola and would go into supermarkets from 4am to 7am to get that covered.”

After his failed bid to tap into this network, he decided he needed to focus on growing one instead. “From 7am to 7pm six or seven days a week I would prospect. I set myself a goal of 100 calls per day, so would go through the phone book and try and convince people to buy or sell their house through me.” It took two years for him to earn enough to leave Coca-Cola, three years to start seeing impressive results, and four years to make it into the top one percent of Harcourt’s 7000 real estate agents across seven countries – including 2000 New Zealand wide. He is also now a shareholder of the Harcourts Grenadier City Office – making him one of the brand’s youngest shareholders in New Zealand - and heads a team of four, the Nicholls Group. “I wanted to join Harcourts because it was the biggest real estate company in Christchurch, so I thought I may as well try and join

MBING the biggest and the best. “I also liked that there was opportunity for growth in the company, you could be an agent or move up into management.” It is this growth which motivates Jonny each day. “I love the growth and being able to measure myself against how other people in the business are doing.” But how does a twenty something stay compelled to work six or – more often than not - seven days a week? “A lot of it comes down to personal stuff – your health, your friends, your relationships – you have to nurture all those areas outside of work to do better in your career. “And I love now that when I go to work I have to be a better person to grow my career.” Jonny says an added bonus of the

job is the opportunity to deal with a wide range of people every day. “I always had an interest in property and people, and there was the added drawcard of the opportunity to work hard and be rewarded quickly – and I didn’t know any other jobs where I could do that. “Everyone is interested in property – they have something to say about it, or want to learn more about it, so you can go anywhere and talk to anyone about it, it’s a great way to meet new people.” Jonny says he has also relished the opportunity to dismantle a somewhat cynical view of real estate agents as untrustworthy, or just after a sale. The industry does have a bit of stigma, so you have to work hard to build your reputation. I have tried to build a reputation that’s probably based on a) working like a dog, and b) telling it like it is. “Now, 70 to 80 percent of my work is repeat or referral based, and I think that largely is down to me being trustworthy and telling it like it is – I think we’re a winning business because of it.” So, what happens when you reach your career goal before you’re 30? “We set new goals and go again, that’s the beauty of this role. The growth is unlimited and that’s what drives me more than anything, to keep serving our clients and go again. Being number one nationally by the time I’m 35 wouldn’t hurt, either.”

You know about the hot pools, you know about the adrenaline activities and you know about the quaint village – but did you know about the plethora of hikes and tramps awaiting at Hanmer Springs?

PARK PARADISE

FOREST WALK

Hanmer Forest Park is a walker’s paradise. The indigenous forest and a small portion of exotic forest makes up some 13,000 hectares of Hanmer Forest Park administered by the Department of Conservation (DoC). From short walks under one hour, to six hour return tramps on easy and advanced terrains – there’s an amble for everyone.

You’ve probably heard of Conical Hill, but tucked into the same area are dozens of other tracks to take. Try the nine-stop, one hour return Forest Walk and get to know the native and exotic trees and flora along the way – begin 1km along Jollies Pass Road and look out for the signposted stops to learn about various tree species.

SPURRING ON

Visiting the waterfall at the Upper Dog Stream Track to Jolliffe Saddle Track can take up to two and half hours return, from Jollies Pass Road carpark. Walk through the pine forest and climb over the saddle to connect back to the Woodland Walk and Timberlands Trail.

Spur Track is a three hour return trek to Dog Stream Waterfall offering panoramic views, subalpine plants and plantation forest views. It can be known to get a bit muddy in parts, so may be best left for warmer, drier seasons.

Opening the gate to community Ajit Kumar, Executive Director Designer Homes, spoke to Metropol about gated communities, a concept the company is embracing in a new venture. Designer Homes has identified the gated community model as a unique model which has not been tried out by most builders in this country, with the hopes of creating a niche.

WHEN, WHERE AND HOW DID THE CONCEPT OF GATED COMMUNITIES ARISE? The concept of gated communities is not really new. In history you learn about fort kingdoms, protected by a moat with one or two approach roads. All the subjects would have their homes inside the fort and

practically all amenities would be available within the fort itself. That is probably the first format of what we call gated communities. The concept originated from humankind’s strong desire for safety, security, and privacy. Modern day gated communities are associated not only with these features, but also with

premium leisure facilities, pedestrian and child-friendly environments and an increased sense of community.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF GATED COMMUNITIES?

WHAT IS THE RELEVANCE OF GATED COMMUNITIES IN THE NEW ZEALAND CONTEXT? Gated communities in New Zealand are likely to be multicultural and multi-ethnic. The sense of belonging that might come out of living in such a society is reminiscent of the Sanskrit phrase found in ancient Hindu texts, “Vasudeiva Kutumbakam”, which means “the world is one family”.

HOW TO SELECT A GATED COMMUNITY?

Gated communities offer many advantages to residents. Perceived safety and security due to controlled access, luxurious amenities, prestige, sophistication and solitude and attractive and well-maintained landscaping without the burden of having to maintain a lifestyle block are just a few.

A few points to be considered when choosing a gated community are location and ease of conveyance, parks, play areas and related amenities, sports and recreational options, green constructions (especially rainwater harvesting), alternate power sources and body corporate matters.

Geoff has been working with plants since taking on an after-school job at a nursery. He enjoyed growing things, so it was simply a no-brainer as to what his life’s work would be. “The team dynamic here is great,” says Geoff. “It certainly makes my job of overseeing workflow so much easier.”

Nurturing and taking care of plants brings joy to Craig as well. Originally from South Africa, at Kiwiflora he is hugely knowledgeable about the pruning and shaping of trees and about the use of herbicides and pesticides. “Everyone works really hard here and it’s very rewarding to be part of such a good core team of people,” says Craig.

Shapes are Kylie’s passion – the shapes of topiary and standardised plants that is. “Working here is the only job I have ever had. I come from a farming background and just love practical work. I am a bit of a dab hand with machines and tractors but making the very best of my standards is my true focus.”

For the last few days, I have been helping eight finalists of the HealthTech Supernode Challenge prepare their five-minute presentations for the upcoming final Demo Night where they will compete for $340,000 of in-kind and cash prizes. It’s been pretty interesting work hearing about the healthtech innovations of our future and meeting the researchers, students, and startup founders who are responsible for them. From virtual reality that could repair brain damage, to artificial intelligence that detects disease, 22 of the country’s most innovative and life changing healthcare innovations were whittled down to this final eight. The whole point of the challenge is to accelerate the future of healthcare and cement Ōtautahi Christchurch as a hotbed of healthtech innovation in New Zealand. From many parts of the city, and even from the Port Hills, you can now clearly make out the white steel skeleton of what will be the Metro Sports Facility. Some very big bones were added recently, in the form of the roof trusses for the 2500-seat show court. The roof is made up of four sections, each of which weighs as much as about 33 cars and has a span close to half the length of a rugby field. Unsurprisingly, getting these giant steel sections into place to the millimetre was a delicate operation, and it’s just a taste of what’s to come as we create the largest sports and recreation facility of its kind in New Zealand. These roof sections required one of the big cranes to lift them into place. The spans over the ten pools will require two cranes to work in tandem. The 12 metre ceiling height of the show court space is to meet the requirements for hosting the likes of top-level basketball and netball fixtures at the facility. The grandstand seats will be retractable, to reveal two more courts that can then be used for community competitions. That’s alongside the six other indoor courts at the southern end of the site, near Moorhouse Avenue. The sheer size and adaptability of this anchor project we’re delivering are key elements in allowing a wide range of people to reap the benefits of being active.

The events of this year have brought the value of health into sharp focus. They also placed unprecedented pressure on already stretched health, education and research resources. In Canterbury, our health board is fighting to balance growing demand with financial constraints. Organisations training our future health workers are facing, among other challenges, a large drop in international students. Funding for life-saving research is harder to get. I am very proud of how our local health system has responded to extraordinary recent challenges. When Covid-19 threatened New Zealanders, all parts of the system from laboratory workers to researchers joined the fight. We were fortunate that key players in Canterbury’s health system already collaborate through the unique-in-New Zealand Te Papa Hauora Health Precinct. It brings health-related organisations together to foster innovation and identify opportunities for improvement. For example, members run regular simulation exercises where students and working professionals practise different medical scenarios together to improve their performance when encountering them in real life. They are working together to ensure the next generation of nurses are ready to meet changing patient needs and deliver more care in the community. Today’s challenges are not going to disappear. New ones will undoubtedly emerge. It just makes sense to work together to address them and improve outcomes for everyone. In Canterbury we are well positioned to do just that.

With August 2020 spending in the central city down 4 percent compared to the same month last year and tourism related industries showing a greater decrease, it’s more important than ever to support local. Major events play an essential role in supporting social and economic prosperity and help create a vibrant atmosphere. BLOOM is our spring celebration – packed with festivals, gigs, art and entertainment. As we head down the home straight of the season, things only get bigger in November as we finish with a flourish. SCAPE Public Art, Riccarton Park and Addington Cup Weeks, Hazletts City Farmyard, Mitre 10 Canterbury versus Auckland game and Go Live! Festival are just some of the events packed into the November BLOOM schedule. Other ways we continue to stimulate the economy include working with local businesses through the Canterbury Regional Business Partner Network – the team have supported 3500 businesses in the six months since the start of lockdown, over five times their annual volume. We’ve launched a domestic tourism campaign #ExploreCHC to drive both local and visitor spending. We’ve invested into the creation of a citywide innovation ecosystem to create valuable and sustainable jobs. Already, we’ve seen the emergence of success stories like Pyper Vision and Zincovery gaining national and international recognition. And this is just the tip of the iceberg, we continue to work in partnership across the city to support social and economic recovery and showcase what makes Ōtautahi Christchurch a fantastic place to live and work.

he designs show a lane pool, a learn-toswim pool, a toddlers’ wet play area, spa pool and a customer service area, as well as the modern library. The centre also includes an espresso bar, a creative activities room, and multipurpose rooms available for meetings and study. The architectural renders show multiple indoor and outdoor areas, including a lush garden courtyard and sleek decking complete with bean bags. Christchurch City Council Recreation, Sports and Events Head Nigel Cox says the designs strongly reflect the community’s views, and that the concept design has been informed by discussions with community groups, including the adjacent schools and accessibility groups.

“With all our new facilities, we focus on strengthening the local community,” he says. “The Hornby community’s input has been integral to this project, from the look of the centre to the exact site and the many opportunities on offer. “It is very exciting to see the centre take shape, and this first glimpse will drive even greater interest.” Following Waipuna/ Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board and Christchurch City Council approval of the concept designs, the detailed design will be developed, and the project will go out to tender for a building contractor early in 2021. Construction is due to start by mid-2021, with the centre set to open in late 2022.

he concept designs by Athfield Architects have captured public feedback and include the addition of a new entrance and café, a new three-storeyed building, and strengthening to bring the site to 100 percent of building code. The concept designs propose the walls on the northern sides of the original Benjamin Mountfort-

designed buildings will be revealed and original exterior elements, including the flèche (slender roof-top spire) on the Rolleston Avenue façade, will be reinstated to celebrate its Gothic Revival character. A new three-storeyed building will wrap around the north side of the heritage buildings, exposing the original walls to public view. The building will include mezzanine floors, multifunctional spaces such as a new lecture theatre and increased space for permanent and temporary exhibitions. A second Rolleston Avenue entrance is planned to cater for the more than 750,000 visitors a year and will also house a café with sidewalk seating. Floor to ceiling glass will be added to part of two floors of the Roger Duff Wing - offering dramatic views across the Botanic Gardens to the Arts Centre – and which will house a split-level family café alongside Discovery, the Museum’s natural history centre for children. Canterbury Museum Director Anthony Wright says the museum has listened very carefully to public feedback, and

as a result will put the 26.5-metre blue whale skeleton back on display and place a greater emphasis on Māori, Pasifika and multicultural exhibits. “The design increases the sense of discovery, surprise and the feeling of never being quite sure of what’s around the corner,” he says. “The way people move through the

museum will definitely be improved.” At the heart of the new museum is a new space called Āraiteuru, housed in the central full-height atrium, which will tell the story of mana whenua and tangata whenua and be home to a new contemporary whare – a ceremonial and educational space.

The real estate purchase for the site went unconditional recently, and Inovo Projects have been appointed to manage the project. Dream team, result They make a dream team, Ingrid Geldof Design (IGD) and the joiners at Advanced Joinery. Their recent collaboration on a Beachville Road kitchen has won the 2020 Canterbury Chapter Kitchen of the Year from the National Kitchen and Bathroom Association (NKBA).

his kitchen also won a Distinction Award in its price category from NKBA and was runner up in the Certified Designers’ Society (CDS) awards. Ingrid is no stranger to winning such awards - she has amassed over 50 since setting up her business in 1992. Advanced Joinery too, has many awards to its name.

Both companies share a passion for quality, seeking to create kitchens that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. “IGD’s forte is space planning,” says Ingrid. “We make spaces work cohesively, so that clients have a joyous place to live and work in.” IGD had a clear brief from the homeowners for the kitchen at Beachville Road, also known as The Ship House. It was to enhance the architecture of the house design itself – full of light, with plenty of room to entertain in and with an uninterrupted view through to the estuary. “It’s a very high tech kitchen with several built-in features – a Hafele vacuum system in the toe space, a concealed audio system and an integrated charging station on the Corian benchtop. The materials are natural for the desired light, streamlined, yet warm effect.” Greg Ayers of Advanced Joinery was delighted to be part of the project. “We’ve worked with Ingrid on a number of occasions. Davinia’s runner-up kitchen (left) was designed for a new build family home. The world of real estate is not only aligned to bricks and mortar; it can also encompass a lot of human emotions. So much so that a saying I’ve often heard, that ‘emotion can defy logic’, is currently being played out in every part of the marketplace.

FEELS Emotion vs. Logic in the Current Property Market

Last month I wrote about ‘market madness’ and the incredible sense of urgency to purchase, and, so far, that’s continuing. Now I’m told, by the media as much as my own observations, that much of this is driven by FOMO or ‘Fear of Missing Out’. And it’s absolutely correct. Auctions and their counterpart deadline sales are being brought forward in large numbers, meaning buyers aren’t waiting for the actual auction or deadline date to make their move. They’re determined to pursue their property dreams right now! In one day last week I received notification (as we do across the entire brand to ensure we can inform any interested party) of 16 auctions or deadline sales being brought forward due to an acceptable offer being made. And, remember, if that’s for an auction, the offer is absolutely unconditional. 16! And that’s just one day. Every day there are similar numbers. On the day I wrote this article, by noon I’d received 10 more. As a consequence, emotions are incredibly high and that includes both joy and disappointment. Over time, I’ve seen the full range of emotions, including tears from first-home buyers with a new baby in arms and the odd raging bull yelling at the price of a property going beyond expectation and budget.

And I think the easiest answer is this line from Tony Alexander, a well-known (and often quoted) economist who, despite being the most optimistic of the economists, is probably also one of the most accurate.

“Waiting for prices to drop hasn’t been a good strategy for the last three decades.” And it’s true. Personally, I’ve tried to favour a measured approach to real estate purchases and that natural caution has seen us miss properties that would now look like jewels in any property portfolio and sell others that should not have been sold. I’m now, at this stage of my career, realising that despite being often told ‘there’s always another property around the corner’, sometimes the good one in front of you is pretty darn good. I don’t know how long our current market will last for, but I do know that Tony Alexander is on the mark. Waiting and waiting and waiting for prices to fall or land to get cheaper could mean waiting a very long time. So get on the property ladder, think about investment property and, if considered advice is what you’re looking for, call me to talk. I’ve got 27 years of experience and that’s become an incredibly important asset.
