IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD For many, the Covid-19 restrictions were a time for future planning and decision making. This has been strongly reflected in the New Zealand property market. In Christchurch, we saw the number of sales for the last quarter (July-September) up 26.5% on the same quarter last year. Our Holmwood offices have seen a 41.5% increase on the same quarter last year. This shows that in uncertain times, home owners turn to the agencies they can be certain of, and we are thankful to be able to assist so many wonderful people. Prices have remained very strong, September’s Christchurch median sale price of $503,000 is 5.89% up on last year; that is a significant increase. Homeowners in Canterbury are continuing to back the property market and investors are still favouring property as a safe place to retain their money. Spring and Summer are always busy for the property market and combined with interest rates being at an all-time low, adds another layer of desirability. We all need somewhere to live; for some it will be ownership, for others rental, we are here to help with both. If you are planning a move, or just considering your options, call one of your Harcourts Holmwood agents today.

In a state of evolution, the Garden City’s architectural typology is nothing short of distinct. New building facades are playing with eye catching angles, colours and materials – a welcome digression from the archetypal concrete and stone buildings previously adopted in the city, as we usher in a new era of urban architecture.

NATIONAL MULTI-AWARD WINNERS
2013 - 2019
Just as this issue heads to print, we head into the long weekend. For many, Labour Weekend marks the home straight to summer. Perhaps it is your yardstick for when it’s time to head to the beach, lake or bach. Or, maybe it’s an opportunity to slow down and take a breather before that final push to the end of year break. By the time this issue is back from the printers, you too will be back from whatever it was you chose to do. And in this issue we are – as we always do – sharing local stories from local people and businesses who make our Canterbury, Wanaka and Queenstown communities worth celebrating. We speak to a young Queenstown musician, Anderson Rocio, who whipped up a song for hit Netflix show Lucifer from her bedroom in a few hours. Paradise has more than a million streams on Spotify – and counting! We also catch up with the Two Raw Sisters, Rosa and Margo Flanagan. In a world of restrictive diets and food fads, the Christchurch duo serve up a refreshing food philosophy which encourages us to challenge our preconceptions around labels like “plant based”. Christchurch-born tailors, Working Style, share their foray into women’s suiting, and in the Fashion section we let you in on our love of rib. In the Cuisine pages, we get creative with breakfast ideas and Home looks at some covetable new interior design trends. Our Build section offers a peek inside some award-winning architecture, interior design and construction. Not to mention sharing some exciting new designs for large public projects like the Canterbury Museum. So wherever your long weekend took you, we’re very glad you ended up back here.

he launch of W, a new custom suiting range for women, coincides with the retailer relocating from Merivale to a modern new store next to Riverside Market on Oxford Terrace, designed by awardwinning local architecture firm, PRau Studio. Founder and Managing Director Chris Dobbs and Christchurch-raised creative director Karl Clausen told Metropol how W is an extension of its bespoke tailored suiting offerings, but now, for women. The idea for the collection was sparked when staff member, Amanda Vine, had a men’s suit tailored for her to wear to work in the Christchurch store about two years ago. “That was the catalyst for the women’s collection,” says Chris. “We’ve been working on it for about 18-months now.

Thirty-three years after opening its first store in Christchurch, Kiwi suiting experts, Working Style, has launched its new womenswear range here, too. The colourful array of blazers, pants and shirting offer New Zealand women a unique experience to select the fabric, fit and detailing of a custom suit.

“We set out to learn what women wanted from suiting, we didn’t want to dictate to them what we thought they wanted, but we wanted to learn.” The resulting collection is impeccably tailored suit pants, jackets and shirting, which can be custom made for wearers in an array of luxurious fabrications selected from the in-store library of leather bound fabric sample books, before being made in Portugal. Every detail of each garment is entirely customisable - from collars to lapels, buttons, pockets, cuffs and leg width. Karl says Working Style’s philosophy of personalization endures in W. “Everything we’re doing now is personalized, it’s very, very important. As a company we also value comfort – everything has to be comfortable, easy to wear and can be worn in

different environments.” Current offerings also reflect a more casual approach to suiting - with the garments making their way into more relaxed aesthetics. “We’re not as formal as the garments we started our life with,” says Karl. “It’s a contemporary take on a classic, we’re making items which gives the wearer options.” The launch of W coincides with the recent opening of the new central city store, a fitting milestone for the business – which started its life door knocking Christchurch businesses offer shirt tailoring. It also follows a challenging period for the world’s retailers, with Covid-19-induced global lockdowns rendering bricks and mortar retailers – and office attire – off limits for many.

Making WORDS MELINDA COLLINS
We’ve long searched for paradise, that idyllic place or state where everything is perfect and now, thanks to Kiwi singer songwriter Anderson Rocio, there are plenty more reasons to love paradise – a million to be precise.
T
hat’s how many Spotify streams Rocio’s latest song Paradise has had since the song made its global debut in a pivotal scene in season five of the popular Netflix series Lucifer. And while the numbers – which are still climbing – are impressive, what is perhaps even more so, is the fact that it was written and recorded in her bedroom in less than a day. “It is so inspiring. I never really feel like these songs come from me, just more ‘through’ me from somewhere else. But to know that people around the world are connecting to the art that I produce is, I think, an artist’s dream. It’s been my dream for a very long time!” The 26-year-old half Spanish, half American beauty was born in Italy, grew up in the UK and sailed the world on a 13.4 metre catamaran for three years with her family and a Yamaha p60 piano, before they settled in New Zealand when Rocio was 14. After graduating with a Bachelor in

Music, Classic Piano Performance from Otago University, she bought a one-way ticket to LA to pursue her music dream in 2017. It took 18 months, but she was eventually signed to a sync agency called THINK Music Inc in August 2018 on the back of her first EP, Darkerside, Rocio had released earlier that year. Occasionally THINK would send her briefs for “an uplifting, sweet song” or “something with the word forever in it” and last September there was a brief for a “happy, sad song”. “The turnover was quick,” she says. “I had a day to see what I could come up with!” Trawling YouTube news with the sound muted, provided the inspiration and Rocio managed to capture the dichotomy of the chaos taking place in the world, with the beauty of humanity. “I wrote, sang, played and recorded Paradise and sent it through without thinking a lot more about it,” she says. Like many things in life, it

ADISE didn’t happen overnight, but it did happen… five months later, when the sync agency asked to approve the use of Paradise for the Netflix show Lucifer. Rocio said “Awesome!” and quickly forgot about it, again. “You never know until close to when the show airs whether or not they’ll actually use it,” she laughs.
When she received the air date and confirmation of use – she was over the moon, but still unaware of how prominent the song would be in this show. The night before the screening, a close videographer friend put together some iPhone footage of Rocio at home in Queenstown during lockdown as a music video, in case anyone went in search of the artist behind the song. And on Friday August 21, they watched in anticipation the fifth episode of Lucifer season five, screening on Netflix in New Zealand. And, rather than simply background music, the song plays during a pivotal scene featuring the character Mazikeen, played by South African-born Kiwi actress Lesley-Ann Brandt. Her phone hasn’t stopped ringing and the notifications haven’t stopped pinging since. “It’s been amazing to see. For me, it’s one more step closer to getting to where I have always wanted to be,” Rocio says. “It’s been a gradual climb with my music and this is the biggest milestone yet. I still feel like I’m daydreaming, so it hasn’t really hit... even now. But I have become a lot busier! It also kinda feels like my birthday every time I wake up to see what new news has come through!”

Restriction is not sustainable. It’s about creating a happy, healthy lifestyle and having fun in the kitchen.
osa, 24, and Margo, 22, have eaten themselves back to health. Chronic fatigue left Margo bed bound for most of her final two years of high school, and injuryinducing disordered eating and over training saw Rosa break from her promising career as an elite runner. So, with their life plans derailed at just 18 and 20, respectively, the sisters flew to Plant Lab culinary school in Los Angeles. Here, Rosa says they learnt about the transformational power of eating wholefoods. “We were at our worst when we went over there,” she says. “We got so much more aware of food and what it could do for our health.” Margo says: “I had health professionals telling me there was nothing I could do about my chronic fatigue. When we went to America, I learned about gut health and got rid of my chronic fatigue in 12-months. “That’s when I learnt about the power of food and what effect it can have on your health and wellbeing.” For Rosa, she says her philosophy around food was tipped on its head, and she went on to study a Bachelor of Applied Science specialising in Human Nutrition. “When I look back now I did have a really bad relationship with food,” she says. “I thought anything I put in my body had to be super clean in order to be a successful athlete. She says the physical and mental stress she was putting on her body, “got to the point where I was told at 20 if I don’t make changes I physically won’t be able to do anything, especially not running.”
Now, that has changed. “When you take the time to look into eating in a healthy way, not dieting all the time, you realise how good you can feel - people are just so used to feeling average they think it’s normal that they are always bloated or that they have no energy when it hits 3pm every day - we want to make it easy and affordable for people.” Which is the ethos behind their culinary brand, Two Raw Sisters. Based at The Welder development on Welles Street in the central city, the sisters run cooking workshops which centre around using pantry staples and fresh ingredients. They have just published their second book, All Eaters Welcome. They also dismantle others’ misconceptions around food. For example, many assume they are vegan. “People assume we’re vegan and all we eat is raw food whereas we don’t follow a diet of any sort,” says Rosa. Instead, the pair’s definition of “plant based” means starting a meal with plants, and then adding the meat, dairy, fish, poultry, tofu or tempeh on the side, if you choose. Margo adds: “Restriction is not sustainable. It’s about creating a happy, healthy lifestyle and having fun in the kitchen – otherwise it’s just so stressful.” And Rosa says the concept appears to have wide appeal. “We cater to all age groups, we have 18-year-olds right through to 80-year-olds, males and females - we’ve made something people are interested in, and which we actually do in our everyday lives. “Our book is called All Eaters Welcome because we want to welcome all eaters into the kitchen.” All Eaters Welcome is out now.

Jersey
The Boys are back in town Get ready for the show of the summer as international hit Jersey Boys makes its Canterbury debut!
R
unning at The Court Theatre from November 21, Jersey Boys is the Tony-Award winning smash musical that tells the rags-to-riches story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, offering one hell of a night out at the theatre. “We are extremely lucky to be able to bring this production to Christchurch audiences,” says director Stephen Robertson. “It’s going to be spectacular.” From humble beginnings on the streets of New Jersey, Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons became one of the biggest bands in the world – but almost lost it all. Jersey Boys chronicals the band’s story with wit and punch, set against a sensational musical playbook. Including musical hits Sherry and Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, the actor playing Frankie Valli
has a huge challenge to take on, emulating his infamously high falsetto voice. Luckily, The Court have been able to secure international star Kristian Lavercombe! Holding the world-record for the most performances in The Rocky Horror Show, Kristian is thrilled to be back home in Aotearoa for Jersey Boys. “I love musicals that show a grittier side of life and Frankie Valli’s story is an absolute rollercoaster,” says Kristian. “It’s a true story that’s told warts and all. Combine that with some of the most iconic music of the 20th century and it’s a win-win situation!” Running from November 21, book now at the Court Theatre’s website. www.courttheatre.org.nz

But just five years ago, as a fresh University of Canterbury Bachelor of Arts graduate, Jonny initially fancied a career in sports journalism or property valuation. That was until a conversation with the only real estate agent he knew set him on his current path, and he successfully applied for a job at Harcourts Grenadier City Office. The only problem was – he had to make sales to earn commission. “I followed advice to tap into my network of homeowners, but at the time I only knew four; my brother, my sister and two of the coaches at my rugby club – and none of them wanted to buy or sell. “I worked out that I needed $350 a week to pay all my bills, so I took a job at Coca-Cola and would go into supermarkets from 4am to 7am to get that covered.”
18 29 October, 2020 Metropol
After his failed bid to tap into this network, he decided he needed to focus on growing one instead. “From 7am to 7pm six or seven days a week I would prospect. I set myself a goal of 100 calls per day, so would go through the phone book and try and convince people to buy or sell their house through me.” It took two years for him to earn enough to leave Coca-Cola, three years to start seeing impressive results, and four years to make it into the top one percent of Harcourt’s 7000 real estate agents across seven countries – including 2000 New Zealand wide. He is also now a shareholder of the Harcourts Grenadier City Office – making him one of the brand’s youngest shareholders in New Zealand - and heads a team of four, the Nicholls Group. “I wanted to join Harcourts because it was the biggest real estate company in Christchurch, so I thought I may as well try and join
MBING the biggest and the best. “I also liked that there was opportunity for growth in the company, you could be an agent or move up into management.” It is this growth which motivates Jonny each day. “I love the growth and being able to measure myself against how other people in the business are doing.” But how does a twenty something stay compelled to work six or – more often than not - seven days a week? “A lot of it comes down to personal stuff – your health, your friends, your relationships – you have to nurture all those areas outside of work to do better in your career. “And I love now that when I go to work I have to be a better person to grow my career.” Jonny says an added bonus of the
From 7am to 7pm, six or seven days a week...I set myself a goal of 100 calls per day, so would go through the phone book and try to convince people to buy or sell their house through me.
job is the opportunity to deal with a wide range of people every day. “I always had an interest in property and people, and there was the added drawcard of the opportunity to work hard and be rewarded quickly – and I didn’t know any other jobs where I could do that. “Everyone is interested in property – they have something to say about it, or want to learn more about it, so you can go anywhere and talk to anyone about it, it’s a great way to meet new people.” Jonny says he has also relished the opportunity to dismantle a somewhat cynical view of real estate agents as untrustworthy, or just after a sale. The industry does have a bit of stigma, so you have to work hard to build your reputation. I have tried to build a reputation that’s probably based on a) working like a dog, and b) telling it like it is. “Now, 70 to 80 percent of my work is repeat or referral based, and I think that largely is down to me being trustworthy and telling it like it is – I think we’re a winning business because of it.” So, what happens when you reach your career goal before you’re 30? “We set new goals and go again, that’s the beauty of this role. The growth is unlimited and that’s what drives me more than anything, to keep serving our clients and go again. Being number one nationally by the time I’m 35 wouldn’t hurt, either.”

perm Return of the Perms are back, baby! Hearing the word perm probably conjures up thoughts of huge ‘80s hair, but the modern reality is far removed from those frizzy memories. Whether you want a looser, loppy curl or tight ringlets, contemporary perming techniques can create a range of looks to suit your style and sensibilities.
P
erms can also be used on short hair to add body and volume without adding curl. Even Hollywood is undergoing a perm revolution, with celebrities Emma Stone, Jonathan Van Ness and Olivia Munn rocking beautiful bouncy perm-induced curls! Perming in 2020 is also much gentler than perms of the past. As technology has
advanced, the products used for perms are kinder on the hair and less likely to damage otherwise healthy locks. While curly hair is naturally more prone to dryness as it prevents oil travelling down the hair shaft, your stylist can recommend suitable products to care for your new ‘do. However, there is no getting around the
permanence of this revived style (hence the name); the typical way to get rid of a perm is to cut the curl out. You’ll need to have your roots re-permed every three to four months to target new hair growth. Hair Art & Beauty love fashion perms and want to help you live your curly girl dreams. For more information or to see if a perm is right for you, phone (03) 381 8939. www.hairart.co.nz

Pilates at home Have you heard about reformer Pilates but thought the equipment looked too hard or scary? Worried it may not help your specific injuries? Or just can’t find a class time and location that works for you? Freedom Health Physiotherapy and Pilates owner Cath Julius tells Metropol why reformer is good for everybody – and how you can now do it at home!
WHAT IS REFORMER PILATES, AND WHY IS IT SO HIGHLY PRAISED?
CAN I DO IT MYSELF, OR DO I NEED TO BE SUPERVISED?
“The Pilates reformer was designed by Joseph Pilates and its popularity has grown significantly over the last 10 years – for good reason. The versatility of the reformer is like no other piece of equipment I have found. From 70-yearolds rehabilitating their knees to elite athletes wanting to improve performance, the reformer has amazing capabilities.”
“Having an instructor that truly understands the purpose of the reformer, and how bodies move, is the vital ingredient to success with reformer pilates. The Freedom Health team have had great success with in-clinic solutions for Pilates and are now making it even easier for people to access with the recent release of Freedom@Home solutions. All classes are designed by physiotherapists.”
WHAT DOES A REFORMER DO, AND HOW DOES IT HELP YOUR FITNESS AND CONDITIONING? “One of the most common misconceptions about the reformer is that it is a piece of strength equipment. The springs of the reformer are actually designed to support people, making movements that normally feel hard, feel easier. The reformer is more like a good dance partner that leads you well and has you moving like you didn’t think was possible. The freedom and confidence that it brings to movement can be life changing”.
WHAT IS FREEDOM@HOME AND HOW DOES IT WORK? “Clients can hire or purchase a reformer from us, and then watch our pre-recorded classes online – at any time which suits them. This saves people the commute and gives them the flexibility to do the same workout with a qualified instructor, around their own schedule. The programme can be personalised for each person’s needs to ensure they meet their health and fitness goals.”

Modern day facial sunscreens are not only for avoiding sunburn and long term skin damage. They brighten and enhance complexion, nourish and protect against aging and melanoma, and give a gorgeous silky coverage – a priceless beauty package.
Discover Your Skin’s Potential Commit to your skin with a monthly Commit to your skin with a monthly facial, and reach your skincare goals. facial, and reach your skincare goals. Introducing the Nicola Quinn Get Introducing the Nicola Quinn Glowing Skin Memberships! Get Glowing Skin Memberships! We all know that taking a single exercise class or hitting the gym once a year won’t make much of a dent in your fitness goals. And the same logic can be applied to achieving great skin.
F
acial sunscreens are not created equally to the potent-smelling, greasy sunscreen you may be used to lathering on at the beach. These are noncomedogenic (won’t clog pores) and are designed specifically for face, neck and décolletage – which are all vulnerable to UV damage, even in winter. Many modern formulas do more than just protect from those harmful rays. Some have brightness boosters, for the latest glow-on look, and some are even packed with
antioxidants like plant extracts and vitamins to simultaneously nourish the skin. Ranges without harsh chemical formulations are blossoming on the beauty shelves, too, using zinc or titanium oxide mineral bases. Sinking in softly without residue, today’s skin protectors have a luscious scent - especially if you adore tropical or floral fragrances, or even fragrance-free. We are over strong chemical whiffs of sunscreen of old.
Receiving one facial or skin care treatment may have a positive impact on your skin, but it likely won’t leave you with the complexion of your dreams. The reason being that your fitness and skin care objectives both require time and consistency for best results - which is why Nicola Quinn Beauty & Day Spa have just launched their new Get Glowing Skin Memberships. You can now purchase a skin care membership (starting at $45 a week) that gives you the ability to experience regular skin treatments and achieve that glowing complexion. With four options to choose from, you can customise your membership to include advanced skin upgrades such as LED and Dermapen Microneedling, or a relaxing treat such as Aroma Swedish Massage - the choice is yours.

R
Is there something in your teeth?
Dentistry is one of the very few medical professions where a foreign material is placed in a patient’s body and then left there permanently for years, if not decades. Add to this the fact that the environment in which this happens is routinely subject to extremes of abrasion, temperature, acidity, bacteria, enzymes and all the other nuances of the oral environment.
ecent evidence has now shown that nearly all composite materials (“white fillings”, as well as many crown cements) contain and potentially release into the body phthalates such as Bisphenol-A (BPA), as well as titanium dioxide, HEMA and TEGDMA. Which some studies have shown may cause toxicity. At Dentistry on Merivale they search the world for dental materials that are as non-toxic as possible, while still allowing full restoration of the dentition. Early last year Dr David Walsh was introduced to a holistic composite and bonding system out of Switzerland called Saremco, which is entirely free of HEMA, TEGDMA, BPAs and titanium dioxide. At the time it was not available in New Zealand, so Dr Walsh imported it himself for a clinical trial. Upon finding it an excellent system, he established Bioholistic New Zealand Ltd to import it as a source for the New Zealand dental profession at large. Saremco is available for purchase by the profession at bioholistic.co.nz. Dr Walsh provides this information simply for the awareness of holistically-minded clients who may be facing some dental work and who are looking for the healthiest option. www.dentistryonmerivale.co.nz

fatty acids THE SKINNY ON
Omegas play an important role in cardiovascular, brain and visual health – and new research tells us omegas also help with immune support, sports performance, quality of sleep and positive mood. Vitality NZ’s Jim Grierson tells Metropol about these important supplements.
WHAT ARE OMEGAS, AND WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT?
WHY ARE PEOPLE NOT CONSUMING ENOUGH OMEGAS?
Omega fatty acids, also known as omega oils, are unsaturated fats which have a large body of research showing the important role these play in our overall health. Particularly omega-3, -6, and -9. The only thing is, our bodies do not make these fats, so can only obtain them from our diets. However, according to World Health Organisation data, only 20 percent of the world’s population consume the recommended intake of omegas of more than 250mg.
It is a combination of people not realising, so not knowing they need to supplement their diets. Take those on plant-based diets, these diets are favoured by people because it helps them make healthy choices. However, because these diets exclude foods which can be sources of omegas, like fish, these diets need to be supplemented to ensure you are getting your omegas.
HOW CAN VITALITY NZ HELP PEOPLE UP THEIR OMEGA INTAKE? Vitality NZ’s Omega Health supplement contains three essential fatty acids, omega-3, -6 and -9. It is also GMO, gluten and dairy free, and free from environmental contaminants. Grown from a sustainable source - New Zealand Blackcurrants right here in Canterbury - it is 100 percent plant-based and comes in a convenient 500mg soft gel capsule making it easy to swallow, with no after taste or known side effects. At the recent Nutra Ingredient-Asia Science Product Awards, the Omega Health supplement won Omega of the Year out of 132 international entrants.
WHAT OTHER ACCOLADES DOES VITALITY NZ HAVE? Vitality NZ was also a finalist in the Ingredient of the Year category with VWNZcGP-LQ™ - the key nutrient found in their Brain Shield® product. These awards follow-up last year’s success of being the winner of the Start-up Company of the Year. The awards will help boost our aims of taking our range global, as will our four new New Zealand investors coming on board. The investors have both marketing and international sales experience to help us take the company to a much higher level, with our objective of being a leader in the plantbased New Zealand grown and processed ingredients and dietary supplement sectors. www.vitalitynz.nz Metropol 29 October, 2020 31
Canterbury Bride
Small changes for your big day WORDS MELINDA COLLINS
White may be the colour traditionally reserved for weddings, but it seems we’re increasingly looking to harness green in life, as in love. So, what does it mean to have a more sustainable wedding and how do you pull one off? Turns out there a plenty of small changes that can be made for your big day. We’ve pulled together our favourites. SOMETHING BORROWED: When it comes to the big day, many of your requirements will never be used again. So put some very real emphasis on the “something borrowed” and enlist your local hire company for whatever you can. It’s also a great way to support local.
LUXE LOCALS: The closer your destination, the greener your big day! Cut back on those CO2 emissions by looking at some of your luxe locals. Canterbury is rich with stunning options for wedding destinations and your wedding day will be kinder on local guests – and the planet! 32 29 October, 2020 Metropol
CLEVER WITH CATERING: Whether your venue is providing catering, or you’re hiring a catering company, look for someone who is environmentally conscious and uses local produce where possible. Perhaps it’s time to give a vegetarian or vegan menu a whirl? Not feeling brave? Perhaps just incorporate elements – it all helps.
TAKES THE CAKE Does your cake really need to be shipped around the country? Why not order locally – makes sense when it comes to taste testing, right? Sourcing alcohol locally is another step towards slashing carbon emissions and, with Waipara’s exceptional tipples at our doorstep, why wouldn’t you?
GREEN OPTIONS We’re taking green more literally with this suggestion, but potted herbs, plants and foliage make a beautiful, sustainable option. If you’re sticking to flowers, ask your florist to source locally. Make your flowers the new wedding favour or donate them, à la Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
SAYONARA TO SINGLE-USE It’s time to ditch single-use decorations, such as confetti. There are plenty of green alternatives, such as biodegradable confetti or even dried flower petals. Send digital invitations and use chalk boards for menus and signage – getting the green tick never looked so good!
When it comes to embracing the grey, there really is something for everyone, explains V for Hair and Beauty Master Stylist Vicki Ogden-O’Fee.

“Just because you have silver hair coming in and you want to go grey gracefully doesn’t mean it has to be a ‘silver’ colour,” she says. “We help you discover if you are warm or cool based on hair, skin and eyes, and from there we help you decide the best look for you.” While those with a warm base suit silver hair with soft champagne, sandy iris, strawberry beige, or translucent butterscotch tones, those with a cool base suit silver dove, champagne lilac or platinum iris. “Getting your colour undertone is so important and when this is done right it gives your face an instant brightening lift and can take years off,” Vicki says. “Get it wrong and you will feel drab and look drained and older, so consultation is key!”

Crafters’ paradise If you’ve been thinking on how to support local while getting out of the city for some well-deserved R and R, there are plenty of reasons to head to Hanmer Springs. The jewel in North Canterbury’s crown, Hanmer has long been the destination for adventure junkies and those craving an escape, but it seems it’s also becoming the place to go for the clever crafters amongst us.
W
endy Lamont has been operating Mickey Raes in the Boulder Point Precinct for almost three years but she has been turning her talented hand to all manner of exquisite handmade crafts for 30 years prior – so she knows her business! There’s just about everything you could ask for at this crafters’ paradise; the store stocks everything from craft, sewing and knitting supplies, through to fabrics and haberdashery. The delightful Diamond Dotz crafting kits are an increasingly popular way to unwind and Wendy has already stocked up on exquisite Christmas fabrics. If you’ve been struggling to
get hold of wool and fabrics due to Covid-19 shortages, you’ll find plenty of that here, too! With giftware galore and Christmas just around the corner, you can start your gift shopping right here and enjoy free gift wrapping with purchase. Pick up a gift for someone’s big 21st or grab your wedding accessories – from car ribbons and flower arrangements to horseshoes and garters. Heading to the Hanmer Springs Fete on Friday 30 October? Why not make a day – or a weekend – of it; head to the Boulder Point Precinct, grab a bite to eat and shop to your hearts content.

Hidden hikes of Hanmer WORDS MORGAN TAIT
You know about the hot pools, you know about the adrenaline activities and you know about the quaint village – but did you know about the plethora of hikes and tramps awaiting at Hanmer Springs?
PARK PARADISE
FOREST WALK
Hanmer Forest Park is a walker’s paradise. The indigenous forest and a small portion of exotic forest makes up some 13,000 hectares of Hanmer Forest Park administered by the Department of Conservation (DoC). From short walks under one hour, to six hour return tramps on easy and advanced terrains – there’s an amble for everyone.
You’ve probably heard of Conical Hill, but tucked into the same area are dozens of other tracks to take. Try the nine-stop, one hour return Forest Walk and get to know the native and exotic trees and flora along the way – begin 1km along Jollies Pass Road and look out for the signposted stops to learn about various tree species.
SPURRING ON
Visiting the waterfall at the Upper Dog Stream Track to Jolliffe Saddle Track can take up to two and half hours return, from Jollies Pass Road carpark. Walk through the pine forest and climb over the saddle to connect back to the Woodland Walk and Timberlands Trail.
Spur Track is a three hour return trek to Dog Stream Waterfall offering panoramic views, subalpine plants and plantation forest views. It can be known to get a bit muddy in parts, so may be best left for warmer, drier seasons.

Breaking the fast It’s long been known as the most important meal of the day, but it certainly doesn’t have to be the most boring. We’ve pulled together some creative ways to start your day off the right way. WORDS MELINDA COLLINS
SMOOTHIE MOVES They’ve long been a breakfast lifesaver that packs a serious nutritional punch. When made with the right ingredients, they can offer almost all of your required daily vitamins and minerals. What else can you chuck a cup of spinach in that tastes this good?
BOWLED OVER They made their first Inst-appearance a couple of years back, but smoothie bowls are still a hot topic. Like the aforementioned smoothies, they are packed with a whole lot of goodness, but the bonus here, is that you can add your favourite fruits and other crunchy things like cereal and nuts.
ALL WRAPPED UP Breakfast wraps are something worth waking up for. The beauty is, there’s no one right way to make one! Pack them with the usual breakfast beauties, like egg, sausages, bacon, hash browns and even avocado, but seasonings like some smoked paprika or BBQ sauce will make breakfast sensational.
MAGIC MUFFINS It doesn’t sound like a breakfast staple, but breakfast muffins might just be the best thing since sliced bread. Find a recipe that uses as much healthy stuff as possible, like apple, blueberry, banana, wholemeal flour, bran and seeds; this breakfast-on-the-go tastes great, is low in calories and high in goodness.

KOMBUCHA THAT KICKS: Calling all kombucha lovers - because your favourite sugar-free probiotic fizzy fruit drink just got a whole lot quirkier. Bomb Bucha have released an alcoholic kombucha in lemon and mint, and raspberry and lime. Putting the kick in health kick! Less than 60 calories per drink and 1.87g of sugar.
Next gen summer tipples
THE VERDICT: The perfect balance of bitter and subtle sweetness.
WORDS JESS MURRAY
The sweet sound of a pour pricks many an ear on a hot summer’s day. While it’s hard to beat an ice-cold rosé or beer, last summer we saw a new wave of naturally flavoured and sweetened readyto-drink alcoholic bevvies take the zeitgeist by storm with classy branding and highbrow flavour matches. This summer, the trend continues - so Metropol looks at the new sipping selection.
CIDER SIDESTEP: Gone are the alcopops, instead we’re seeing the rise of hard seltzer – a fermented and carbonated fruit-based alcohol. Tired of the basic apple cider? Zeffer takes a massive cide-step (excuse the pun) into making watermelon, orange and grapefruit and guava cider-based seltzers at less than 100 calories and 1.65g of sugar per drink. Launching November. THE VERDICT: Fresh, zingy and surprisingly light. Go for guava!

BOUJEE BEER:
FULL OF PASSION:
WINE O’CLOCK:
There may be a lot of purists who believe beer should not be touched. But Club Setter’s beer-base seltzer, just 1.7g of sugar, less than 100 calories per drink and full of natural fruit flavour shows you can have the best of both worlds – fruit and froth.
Pals captured the public’s imagination with its collection of boujee-flavoured RTDs in summer 2019. For 2020, we’re getting a peach and passionfruit remix. In this pastel purple can you’ll find vodka mixed with Central Otago peach, passionfruit and soda. This new flavour becomes the fifth friend in the Pals group.
Left Field is New Zealand’s first winebased seltzer, providing a crisp base flavour enhanced with a refreshing array of fruity ingredients including yuzu, mint and cucumber with sauvignon blanc, strawberry and hibiscus with rosé, and pear and ginger with pinot gris. Only 68 calories per can and less than 1g of sugar.
THE VERDICT: Sweet yet refreshing, with no overpowering aftertaste.
THE VERDICT: Our pick of the hard seltzers. Refreshing flavours with that crisp wine finish.
THE VERDICT: The malty flavour of beer, with a fruity kick. We liked the watermelon best.

Japandi TREND TO KNOW:
WORDS MELINDA COLLINS
We’re not going to lie, 2020, we won’t miss you. In fact, we’re already looking ahead to your replacement. But it’s not all bad news; we are going to use you for inspiration for a bit of lounging around in 2021.
T
hat’s right, if you would rather put 2020 behind you, we’re with you! But this rather average year is shaping up to play a pivotal role in our living spaces. We’ve checked out the ways 2020 is influencing our 2021 living rooms – and would like to introduce trend to know, Japandi. We’ve long honoured and admired the Scandinavian aesthetic in the home; a design movement characterised by simplicity, minimalism and functionality.
A.

Now we’re taking that to the next level with Japandi – an amalgamation of Scandinavian and Japanese design aesthetics. Each has a focus on simplicity, natural elements and comfort. Combined, the look is minimal, functional, warm and calming, with touches of wabi-sabi enthused imperfection. So, it’s no surprise we’re craving Japandi and all it represents in a Covid-19 world.

Opening the gate to community Ajit Kumar, Executive Director Designer Homes, spoke to Metropol about gated communities, a concept the company is embracing in a new venture. Designer Homes has identified the gated community model as a unique model which has not been tried out by most builders in this country, with the hopes of creating a niche.
WHEN, WHERE AND HOW DID THE CONCEPT OF GATED COMMUNITIES ARISE? The concept of gated communities is not really new. In history you learn about fort kingdoms, protected by a moat with one or two approach roads. All the subjects would have their homes inside the fort and
practically all amenities would be available within the fort itself. That is probably the first format of what we call gated communities. The concept originated from humankind’s strong desire for safety, security, and privacy. Modern day gated communities are associated not only with these features, but also with
premium leisure facilities, pedestrian and child-friendly environments and an increased sense of community.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF GATED COMMUNITIES?
WHAT IS THE RELEVANCE OF GATED COMMUNITIES IN THE NEW ZEALAND CONTEXT? Gated communities in New Zealand are likely to be multicultural and multi-ethnic. The sense of belonging that might come out of living in such a society is reminiscent of the Sanskrit phrase found in ancient Hindu texts, “Vasudeiva Kutumbakam”, which means “the world is one family”.
HOW TO SELECT A GATED COMMUNITY?
Gated communities offer many advantages to residents. Perceived safety and security due to controlled access, luxurious amenities, prestige, sophistication and solitude and attractive and well-maintained landscaping without the burden of having to maintain a lifestyle block are just a few.
A few points to be considered when choosing a gated community are location and ease of conveyance, parks, play areas and related amenities, sports and recreational options, green constructions (especially rainwater harvesting), alternate power sources and body corporate matters.
DO WE HAVE GATED COMMUNITIES IN NEW ZEALAND?
WHY DO YOU FOCUS ON GREEN CONSTRUCTIONS AND RAINWATER HARVESTING?
Gated communities have emerged in suburban areas of this country since the late 1980s. Most gated communities are being sold as retirement villages or are focused on the uber rich. In recent times however, there has been an emergence of suburban gated communities focused on the middle-income group.
Water scarcity is a growing problem in urban areas. That’s the reason to look out for green constructions which employ environmentally friendly measures such as green roofs, rainwater harvesting, in-house sewage treatment, recycling plants and solar energy storage etc. Metropol 29 October, 2020 47

Walking on the (re)wild side As spring gives way to summer, greenfingered folk itch to get out there and start marshalling their gardens into a manicured precision. But wait! A new gardening trend, rewilding, is encouraging gardeners to let nature take its course on kept landscapes.
T
echnically a form of large-scale conservation dedicated to returning land to a degree of natural habitats, rewilding is taking on new meaning in home gardens. Now, trendsetters are allowing plants to lose manicured neatness in favour of a more relaxed aesthetic. Touted as the newest gardening trend by The Guardian, Living Etc, and The Telegraph, rewilding on a domestic scale is about embracing principals of stepping back and allowing natural processes to occur.
SIMPLE STEPS TO REWILDING:
1.
2. 3. 4. 5.
Swap chemicals for organic methods - swap fertilisers for an organic seaweed feed. Choose flowering plants that are ace pollinators - open shapes rather than densely petalled blooms. If wilding grassy areas, choose plants that cope with competition - such as wild roses, meadow geraniums and poppies. Plant native hedging rather than fencing to provide bird shelter flower and berry hedges are even better. Feed your soil – healthy soil creates a biodiverse garden from the ground up. Top borders and bare earth with a mulch of organic matter to increase soil health.

Growing a great team Teamwork maximises shared knowledge in the workplace. That’s definitely the case at Kiwiflora Nurseries. Nalin Gooneratne, managing director of the nurseries, has nothing but praise for his team of horticulturalists and salespeople.

“It’s the knowledge each member of our team brings that makes our business successful,” says Nalin. They may all have their own individual areas of specialisation, but when there’s work pressure in a particular section, everyone will pitch in to help.
Geoff has been working with plants since taking on an after-school job at a nursery. He enjoyed growing things, so it was simply a no-brainer as to what his life’s work would be. “The team dynamic here is great,” says Geoff. “It certainly makes my job of overseeing workflow so much easier.”
Nurturing and taking care of plants brings joy to Craig as well. Originally from South Africa, at Kiwiflora he is hugely knowledgeable about the pruning and shaping of trees and about the use of herbicides and pesticides. “Everyone works really hard here and it’s very rewarding to be part of such a good core team of people,” says Craig.
Shapes are Kylie’s passion – the shapes of topiary and standardised plants that is. “Working here is the only job I have ever had. I come from a farming background and just love practical work. I am a bit of a dab hand with machines and tractors but making the very best of my standards is my true focus.”

Anne spends a great deal of her time dealing with quotes and emails from clients, as well as advising customers on appropriate plants and procuring seedlings from all over New Zealand. “The team here do the work because they love it. There’s well over 100 years of combined experience.”
Callum enjoys advising customers too and keeping the garden centre well stocked. Once someone who dealt with numbers and finance, Callum joined Kiwiflora Nursery to follow his passion for horticulture, including bonsai and cloud pruning.
They also start them young at Kiwiflora Nurseries. Nalin’s 12-year-old daughter Shana now sells in the local market plants she has potted and grown. “It’s really enjoyable being here – the team are so kind and friendly.”

Innovative inside and out A new Christchurch showroom is not just displaying internationally recognised kitchen interior design – its architecturally-designed building is noteworthy too.
B
lum has opened its innovative new South Island showroom, office, trade training, warehouse and distribution hub in Wigram, designed by Warren & Mahoney Architects. The kitchen hardware
specialists’ architectural property is purpose built, focusing on sustainability, wellness and employee wellbeing, says Warren & Mahoney Architects Christchurch Senior Associate, Simon Laurie.
This meant incorporating natural light, outdoor time out areas, acoustic design for comfortable noise levels, and materials to complement the natural local environment. “Architecturally, the design expresses a streamlined, finely tuned and engineered outcome closely aligned with the precision of products the building will deliver,” he says. A pitched frontage design was used to break up the scale of the warehouse for a more urban appearance. “The showroom is a splendid double height light filled space that visually connects with the outside and features a cantilevered stair clad in blue steel.” The key features are geothermal heating, natural ventilation systems, solar thermal for hot water generation, water recycling

system and charging station for electric cars. Blum New Zealand Managing Director Michael Hawkins says the design aligns with Blum’s own business philosophies. “The architectural design matches our heirloom, but we also want to be relevant in the current business climate, supporting local businesses by hosting events, industry meetings, seminars and training workshops for architects, designers and cabinet makers.” Inside, the showroom presents moving ideas and concepts for innovative kitchen and cabinetry solutions, allowing customers to experience a full-scale kitchen test drive. The Austrian manufacturer wants to show its South Island customers how creative interior design can be when implemented with high-quality fittings in kitchens, bathrooms and living areas of all sizes. We’re celebrating Canterbury business champions! Kei te whakanui tātou i ngā pakihi kairangi o Waitaha! While the last few months have been challenging, we have also heard some amazing stories of innovation, nimbleness, determination, collaboration and kindness, so we wanted to provide a platform to share those stories. That’s why Westpac and The Chamber are so excited to bring you our new Canterbury Business Champions campaign. Your business champion could be your own team that has introduced a new wellbeing initiative or new product or service, or another a business you work with that has innovated to make the most of a market opportunity. It might even be a shout-out to a local business operator who provides a great customer experience. From great feats to small tokens – whatever you think makes a business champion – we want to hear from you. Share your story – tohaina mai ōu kōrero – visit www.canterburybusinesschampions.com. All individuals who share a story will go in the draw to win one of three advertising vouchers, worth $5000 each, from Mediaworks and The Press or one of three $1000 Air New Zealand Travel Vouchers. Thanks to: Lead Partner Westpac, Creative Partner Harvey Cameron Group, Radio Partner Mediaworks, Print Partner The Press and Channel Partner ChristchurchNZ; Campaign Partners Christchurch City Council, and Lyttelton Port Company; and Campaign Supporters Kordia PLC, Christchurch Casino, Air New Zealand, and Export New Zealand Canterbury. The campaign runs until November 6, so get in quick! Together, let’s celebrate and champion our local businesses and businesspeople. We’re all in this together — he waka eke noa.
While the year 2050 may seem like a long time away, when I look around the city today, I can imagine that future even though I won’t be here to enjoy it. But that, in itself, is the wake-up call we need. If we are to meet the needs of future generations, we need to start planning now and we need to work with our neighbours, Rangiora, Kaiapoi, Lincoln and Rolleston. And that is what Greater Christchurch 2050 is all about. The opportunity of Greater Christchurch has not always been well understood – as a place to live, work and invest, and as a significant contributor to national wellbeing – locally, nationally, internationally. We are at a pivotal point in our postquake journey – it’s time to look ahead, to set a confident vision for the future. Working in partnership with mana whenua and iwi, Greater Christchurch 2050 will help us build on our region’s economic strengths, which in turn will enable us to grow and attract the industries, employment and investment that will provide prosperity for our future generations. At the same time, we know we need to ensure an inclusive, sustainable and resilient future. Councils can’t do this for their communities. And that’s where you come in. We want you to help shape a vision for the future of Greater Christchurch. There is a quick on-line survey at www.greaterchristchurch.org.nz and it’s open until November 8. It should take around five minutes to provide some feedback. I hope you do.
For the last few days, I have been helping eight finalists of the HealthTech Supernode Challenge prepare their five-minute presentations for the upcoming final Demo Night where they will compete for $340,000 of in-kind and cash prizes. It’s been pretty interesting work hearing about the healthtech innovations of our future and meeting the researchers, students, and startup founders who are responsible for them. From virtual reality that could repair brain damage, to artificial intelligence that detects disease, 22 of the country’s most innovative and life changing healthcare innovations were whittled down to this final eight. The whole point of the challenge is to accelerate the future of healthcare and cement Ōtautahi Christchurch as a hotbed of healthtech innovation in New Zealand. Sponsored by ChristchurchNZ, KiwiNet, and Ryman Healthcare, the challenge aimed to identify commercially viable solutions that address real healthcare problems. Why does Canterbury care about becoming a hotbed of health tech innovation? At present, New Zealand’s current healthtech companies represent $1.9 billion revenue and the average wage - at $85,000 annually, is 40 percent higher than the average across other sectors. We have proven capability in Christchurch to innovate in this sector and proudly headquarter healthtech powerhouses such as Aranz, Orion, and Taska Prosthetics to name a few. Congratulations to the winners of the HealthTech Supernode Challenge. Their innovations could spawn the Cantabrian healthtech powerhouses of the future.

From many parts of the city, and even from the Port Hills, you can now clearly make out the white steel skeleton of what will be the Metro Sports Facility. Some very big bones were added recently, in the form of the roof trusses for the 2500-seat show court. The roof is made up of four sections, each of which weighs as much as about 33 cars and has a span close to half the length of a rugby field. Unsurprisingly, getting these giant steel sections into place to the millimetre was a delicate operation, and it’s just a taste of what’s to come as we create the largest sports and recreation facility of its kind in New Zealand. These roof sections required one of the big cranes to lift them into place. The spans over the ten pools will require two cranes to work in tandem. The 12 metre ceiling height of the show court space is to meet the requirements for hosting the likes of top-level basketball and netball fixtures at the facility. The grandstand seats will be retractable, to reveal two more courts that can then be used for community competitions. That’s alongside the six other indoor courts at the southern end of the site, near Moorhouse Avenue. The sheer size and adaptability of this anchor project we’re delivering are key elements in allowing a wide range of people to reap the benefits of being active.
The events of this year have brought the value of health into sharp focus. They also placed unprecedented pressure on already stretched health, education and research resources. In Canterbury, our health board is fighting to balance growing demand with financial constraints. Organisations training our future health workers are facing, among other challenges, a large drop in international students. Funding for life-saving research is harder to get. I am very proud of how our local health system has responded to extraordinary recent challenges. When Covid-19 threatened New Zealanders, all parts of the system from laboratory workers to researchers joined the fight. We were fortunate that key players in Canterbury’s health system already collaborate through the unique-in-New Zealand Te Papa Hauora Health Precinct. It brings health-related organisations together to foster innovation and identify opportunities for improvement. For example, members run regular simulation exercises where students and working professionals practise different medical scenarios together to improve their performance when encountering them in real life. They are working together to ensure the next generation of nurses are ready to meet changing patient needs and deliver more care in the community. Today’s challenges are not going to disappear. New ones will undoubtedly emerge. It just makes sense to work together to address them and improve outcomes for everyone. In Canterbury we are well positioned to do just that.
Future-proofing design
With August 2020 spending in the central city down 4 percent compared to the same month last year and tourism related industries showing a greater decrease, it’s more important than ever to support local. Major events play an essential role in supporting social and economic prosperity and help create a vibrant atmosphere. BLOOM is our spring celebration – packed with festivals, gigs, art and entertainment. As we head down the home straight of the season, things only get bigger in November as we finish with a flourish. SCAPE Public Art, Riccarton Park and Addington Cup Weeks, Hazletts City Farmyard, Mitre 10 Canterbury versus Auckland game and Go Live! Festival are just some of the events packed into the November BLOOM schedule. Other ways we continue to stimulate the economy include working with local businesses through the Canterbury Regional Business Partner Network – the team have supported 3500 businesses in the six months since the start of lockdown, over five times their annual volume. We’ve launched a domestic tourism campaign #ExploreCHC to drive both local and visitor spending. We’ve invested into the creation of a citywide innovation ecosystem to create valuable and sustainable jobs. Already, we’ve seen the emergence of success stories like Pyper Vision and Zincovery gaining national and international recognition. And this is just the tip of the iceberg, we continue to work in partnership across the city to support social and economic recovery and showcase what makes Ōtautahi Christchurch a fantastic place to live and work.

he designs show a lane pool, a learn-toswim pool, a toddlers’ wet play area, spa pool and a customer service area, as well as the modern library. The centre also includes an espresso bar, a creative activities room, and multipurpose rooms available for meetings and study. The architectural renders show multiple indoor and outdoor areas, including a lush garden courtyard and sleek decking complete with bean bags. Christchurch City Council Recreation, Sports and Events Head Nigel Cox says the designs strongly reflect the community’s views, and that the concept design has been informed by discussions with community groups, including the adjacent schools and accessibility groups.
“With all our new facilities, we focus on strengthening the local community,” he says. “The Hornby community’s input has been integral to this project, from the look of the centre to the exact site and the many opportunities on offer. “It is very exciting to see the centre take shape, and this first glimpse will drive even greater interest.” Following Waipuna/ Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board and Christchurch City Council approval of the concept designs, the detailed design will be developed, and the project will go out to tender for a building contractor early in 2021. Construction is due to start by mid-2021, with the centre set to open in late 2022.

he concept designs by Athfield Architects have captured public feedback and include the addition of a new entrance and café, a new three-storeyed building, and strengthening to bring the site to 100 percent of building code. The concept designs propose the walls on the northern sides of the original Benjamin Mountfort-
designed buildings will be revealed and original exterior elements, including the flèche (slender roof-top spire) on the Rolleston Avenue façade, will be reinstated to celebrate its Gothic Revival character. A new three-storeyed building will wrap around the north side of the heritage buildings, exposing the original walls to public view. The building will include mezzanine floors, multifunctional spaces such as a new lecture theatre and increased space for permanent and temporary exhibitions. A second Rolleston Avenue entrance is planned to cater for the more than 750,000 visitors a year and will also house a café with sidewalk seating. Floor to ceiling glass will be added to part of two floors of the Roger Duff Wing - offering dramatic views across the Botanic Gardens to the Arts Centre – and which will house a split-level family café alongside Discovery, the Museum’s natural history centre for children. House building, but extended – and 20 residential-style accommodation units when building commences in 2021.
The real estate purchase for the site went unconditional recently, and Inovo Projects have been appointed to manage the project. Inovo, supported by Tonkin & Taylor environmental and engineering consultants, have commenced the first phase of the project to secure required consents in cooperation with the Ashburton District Council. Concept designs show a modern, multi-building design on the shores of Lake Hood, a 72 hectare man-made aquatic park with water-skiing and boating facilities, which also hosts national rowing events. The campus will offer “a safe haven in a secure and stress-free environment catering to one’s every need whilst continuing to develop fitness, skills and education,” according to project proposals on Southern Parallel Sports’ website. The campus is intended to cater for high performance, injured and disabled athletes, as well as returned servicemen and women, youth and the local community.

From paperwork to completion You might be thinking you’ve done the easy part – registered before the deadline on the EQC website for on-sold, over-cap properties – but are dreading what comes next: preparing the paperwork, communicating with the Christchurch City Council, and of course coping with the stress and upheaval of the repair itself.
elax! Mitchell James and Paul Hardy, Directors of WD Build and Hardy Projects, have been at the forefront of this programme since its inception. They help owners with the process from the paperwork at the very beginning, to handing over beautifully finished homes at completion. “We have so much experience with the EQC process, as well as bringing our building expertise from engineered foundations to architectural finishes,” says Mitchell. Client Ben McLean is delighted with the result he received. “Working with Mitchell and Paul was so easy – they made the process really straightforward when we didn’t have a clue about what was required,” he says. The house required foundation repair, partial relevel, new flooring, tiling in the bathroom, internal painting, electrics brought
to code, and the underfloor insulation which had been non-compliant, all replaced. The garage had its foundations dug out and replaced as well as blockwork repaired. “The house looks amazing,” says Ben. “And the estimate of four to six months work was actually completed in 12 weeks!” With Mitchell and Paul on the job, the work was very well planned, started quickly, ran smoothly and was completed to a very high standard. “I’d recommend WD Build and Hardy Projects to anyone in a heartbeat,” says Ben. Paul says: “For home owners who have registered with EQC and now need to engage a contactor to get things moving along, just pick up the phone and talk to us about an initial free assessment of your home and we’ll make a plan from there.”

“I studied a Bachelor of Industrial Design, and I loved doing the furniture design paper. When I finished up, I thought maybe I could combine my love of cooking and furniture design into kitchen design and I just went from there. I’m very fortunate to have discovered that passion at a young age.”
WHAT WAS THE BRIEF GIVEN FOR THE 2020 NKBA AND HOW DID YOU ACHIEVE THIS?
Wanaka’s Wieliczka In the eyes of Hannah Withy, good interior design involves working to the client’s brief to ensure they are happy. Which is exactly what landed her three awards for the beautiful bathroom (pictured) at the NKBA 2020 Excellence in Design Awards. Metropol catches up with the first-time entrant.
“The client wanted the bathroom to be like a cave. They were an ownerbuilder so wanted to be able to do a lot of the work themselves. So, instead of doing a huge amount of tiling on the walls I chose a material that the owner was able to install. When the client mentioned the word cave, I instantly thought of the Wieliczka cathedral-like Salt Mine in Poland I had seen on my OE.”
WHAT DOES THIS RECOGNITION MEAN TO YOU? “I am ecstatic to have my hard work rewarded during what has been a tough year. I am humbled by this award and am so happy I made the effort to enter.” www.hmartindesign.com

Dream team, result They make a dream team, Ingrid Geldof Design (IGD) and the joiners at Advanced Joinery. Their recent collaboration on a Beachville Road kitchen has won the 2020 Canterbury Chapter Kitchen of the Year from the National Kitchen and Bathroom Association (NKBA).
T
his kitchen also won a Distinction Award in its price category from NKBA and was runner up in the Certified Designers’ Society (CDS) awards. Ingrid is no stranger to winning such awards - she has amassed over 50 since setting up her business in 1992. Advanced Joinery too, has many awards to its name.
Both companies share a passion for quality, seeking to create kitchens that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. “IGD’s forte is space planning,” says Ingrid. “We make spaces work cohesively, so that clients have a joyous place to live and work in.” IGD had a clear brief from the homeowners for the kitchen at Beachville Road, also known as The Ship House. It was to enhance the architecture of the house design itself – full of light, with plenty of room to entertain in and with an uninterrupted view through to the estuary. “It’s a very high tech kitchen with several built-in features – a Hafele vacuum system in the toe space, a concealed audio system and an integrated charging station on the Corian benchtop. The materials are natural for the desired light, streamlined, yet warm effect.” Greg Ayers of Advanced Joinery was delighted to be part of the project. “We’ve worked with Ingrid on a number of occasions. We both want to achieve the very best for the client and we are very proud of the final outcome, especially the attention to detail.” The homeowners, who engaged Bruce Banbury of Banbury Architects and James Warren of Upoko Architects for the project, are full of praise for both IGD and Advanced Joinery. “They have given us everything we wanted in the kitchen. It’s just perfect and a breeze to work in. It certainly deserves the awards.”

he awards were judged online, and Davinia was up against competition from Europe, Singapore, Malaysia, North America and Australia. Davinia’s runner-up kitchen (left) was designed for a new build family home. Strong structural forms respect and complement the architectural context, resulting in a design that incorporates the use of colour, light and texture to enhance the space and modern form. Her highly commended kitchen (right) was for a home on Leinster Road, and adds a strikingly contemporary touch to a classic monochrome palette, preserving the special character of a traditional home with a modern spin. “Our work is bespoke; it’s not something pulled together overnight,” Davinia says. “Success comes from a strong collaboration – with our tradespeople, who are willing to go on a design journey with us, and with our clients, who put their trust in what we do and are prepared to push boundaries. It’s very humbling to get these results on the world stage.”

riginally built in 1866, the Hokitika Fire Station has stood the test of time, even being burned down and
rebuilt four times. Today, it has been lovingly restored as accommodation. The history of Hokitika’s fire
services remain ever present within the iconic brick building, with oodles of firefighting memorabilia and nick-nacks
lining the walls and the public areas of the Qualmark five-star deluxe apartments. With three luxury studios upstairs and a three-bedroom family unit with added kitchen, and accessible apartment downstairs - each of the five apartments have been named after a fire chief who once led the Hokitika Fire Brigade. Each apartment combines space, a modern en-suite bathroom and either a kitchenette or full kitchen. The larger Chief Henshaw room has three beautifully kept bedrooms, dining area, full kitchen and living area. The ground floor Chief Millard apartment has full disabled access, a king-sized bed with additional queen size sofa bed with space for up to four guests. History, beautifully kept apartments, décor, and five stars. What more could you possibly want from your stay in Hokitika? “Hokitika Fire Station Apartments is also the only accommodation located in the Hokitika CBD to be given a Qualmark five-star rating,” says owner Kerry Jeffs.

Gleniti oasis PHOTOS LIGHTFORGE PHOTOGRAPHY
This elegant sanctuary at Gleniti strikes the perfect balance of personal and social space. Designed by Chilton + Mayne Architecture, the brief called for a modern, contemporary family home which maximises space, sunlight and views, and which works in harmony with the site.
irector Garry Mayne and his team ensured large windows and sliders create a fluid transition from indoor living spaces to the covered outdoor area and decking. The swimming pool and sheltered outdoor living maximises the external environment, and each space experiences the wonderful views to the immediate environment and beyond. Open plan living with a raking ceiling contributes to the sense of airy calm and makes for seamless entertaining with a state-of-the-art kitchen at its heart. Glazed opening placements have all been carefully considered in a passive solar design approach of harnessing and managing the sun’s energy and storing it in the thermal mass of the polished concrete floors. The 374 sqm home sets a crisp architectural statement with the use of white plaster cladding alongside local Timaru Bluestone accents adding depth and contrast. The Bluestone is carried into the interior and is also used in the landscaping.

The world of real estate is not only aligned to bricks and mortar; it can also encompass a lot of human emotions. So much so that a saying I’ve often heard, that ‘emotion can defy logic’, is currently being played out in every part of the marketplace.
ALL THE
FEELS Emotion vs. Logic in the Current Property Market
Last month I wrote about ‘market madness’ and the incredible sense of urgency to purchase, and, so far, that’s continuing. Now I’m told, by the media as much as my own observations, that much of this is driven by FOMO or ‘Fear of Missing Out’. And it’s absolutely correct. Auctions and their counterpart deadline sales are being brought forward in large numbers, meaning buyers aren’t waiting for the actual auction or deadline date to make their move. They’re determined to pursue their property dreams right now! In one day last week I received notification (as we do across the entire brand to ensure we can inform any interested party) of 16 auctions or deadline sales being brought forward due to an acceptable offer being made. And, remember, if that’s for an auction, the offer is absolutely unconditional. 16! And that’s just one day. Every day there are similar numbers. On the day I wrote this article, by noon I’d received 10 more. As a consequence, emotions are incredibly high and that includes both joy and disappointment. Over time, I’ve seen the full range of emotions, including tears from first-home buyers with a new baby in arms and the odd raging bull yelling at the price of a property going beyond expectation and budget.
And I think the easiest answer is this line from Tony Alexander, a well-known (and often quoted) economist who, despite being the most optimistic of the economists, is probably also one of the most accurate.
“Waiting for prices to drop hasn’t been a good strategy for the last three decades.” And it’s true. Personally, I’ve tried to favour a measured approach to real estate purchases and that natural caution has seen us miss properties that would now look like jewels in any property portfolio and sell others that should not have been sold. I’m now, at this stage of my career, realising that despite being often told ‘there’s always another property around the corner’, sometimes the good one in front of you is pretty darn good. I don’t know how long our current market will last for, but I do know that Tony Alexander is on the mark. Waiting and waiting and waiting for prices to fall or land to get cheaper could mean waiting a very long time. So get on the property ladder, think about investment property and, if considered advice is what you’re looking for, call me to talk. I’ve got 27 years of experience and that’s become an incredibly important asset.
