More than that, a buzz is beginning to fill the city as people venture out after a winter cooped up inside.
Cantabrians are so lucky with all that we have on our doorstep; the walks to stunning views, numerous beaches only a short drive from central, adventure activities galore, and, of course, the wonderful hospitality and retail businesses that continue to grow.
While it’s easy to take it all for granted, it’s well worth taking some time to appreciate this ever-changing city that perfectly blends innovation and heritage like no other.

women’s rugby
Christchurch is part of a pop-up street art exhibition celebrating women’s rugby.
The Support Our Sisters: The Art of Rugby series has seen seven bespoke, large scale street artworks on display in Christchurch, Whangarei, Auckland, and Hamilton since mid-September.
Rugby World Cup collaborated with seven established New Zealand street artists, who have encapsulated women’s rugby through unique artworks which include illustration, graphic street art, surrealism and realism. They range in scale from five to 50 metres, on various mediums from mural walls, buildings and hoardings to public institutions.
In Christchurch, artist Wongi Wilson has paid special homage to Canterbury’s own, Kendra Cocksedge, at the Christchurch Town Hall with artwork pictured here.
Rugby World Cup 2021 Tournament Director Michelle Hooper says the nationwide exhibition reflects New Zealand’s love for rugby and burgeoning support for the women’s game.
Black Fern Kendra Cocksedge says to play a Rugby World Cup on home soil with the world watching is a dream come true. “This nationwide artwork exhibition is so diverse and fun, I hope that it captures peoples’ imaginations. Support for all the nations playing and our rugby sisterhood is vital to transmitting the power and opportunity of rugby to women and girls around the world,” she adds.
THE GAMES STARTED ON 8 OCTOBER AND RUN UNTIL 12 NOVEMBER.
RACING OFF AND
Olympic medallists, America’s Cup winners, and SailGP co-CEOs, Peter Burling and Blair Tuke have truly earned a place in New Zealand’s sporting history already, and they show no signs of slowing down.
Currently setting the pace with the New Zealand SailGP Team, the pair are planning tactics for their next races, here and abroad, racing at high speeds in their two tonne hydrofoiling catamaran.
The last time either of them raced in Lyttelton was between 10 and 15 years ago. Neither sees that as a problem.
“We’re all fast learners [the team], and have been together for a long time. Every time we take to the water, the skill level goes up, and up,” Peter says.
He adds that the team is always looking at how it can race the catamarans better.
“Usually a week out before the racing, we have a good feel for the course so we can fine tune things from there.
“And on the day depending on the conditions we’re racing in,” he adds.
With the inaugural New Zealand Sail Grand Prix now fully sold out, the Kiwis are guaranteed a packed home crowd when it foils on the ocean waves.
“We’re looking at various configurations to use at Lyttelton, where the harbour is completely di erent to courses [St Tropez, Cadiz, San Francisco] that we have raced to date.”
Di erent doesn’t mean bad, he says. For example, the catamarans foil faster in cooler water temperatures, so there’s a possibility they may even set a new record, exceeding 100kmh.
SAILS ARE SET
Halfway through Season 3, the New Zealand SailGP Team sits second on the overall leaderboard - just four points behind defending champions, Australia. It’s an exciting turnaround for the Kiwi crew, who initially struggled to perform on the SailGP circuit, finishing fifth overall in Season 2.
The tides changed earlier this year when they took their firstever event win at the Great Britain Sail Grand Prix in Plymouth, followed by a comprehensive event win in Denmark, and a second-place finish in Saint-Tropez last month.
Burling says, “We’ve been on such a journey as a team and it’s been awesome to see so much momentum building. We can’t wait to get back out there and race in front of fans at home.”
It’s a long season ahead and Burling says the team are focused on, “the long game” in a league where anything can happen, and every team is capable of making it on the podium. Commenting on the Kiwi’s lukewarm finish in Spain last month, Burling said, “We’re very much focused on being the best team we can be in this league at the end of the season, when it matters.” SailGP is back next month with the first-ever Dubai Sail Grand Prix, presented by P&O Marinas, over two action-packed days on 12-13 November 2022. New Zealanders can tune in live on Sky Sport NZ or live and ondemand on YouTube.
Both are excited to show home fans what they can do.
The live action sailing brings excitement on and o the water as they race against the best in the world, battling for supremacy in identical F50s.
ENCOURAGING WORDS
And both have advice for youngsters wanting to follow in their footsteps:
1. If you enjoy water sports, expand that interest to other water-based activities.
2. Make friends with like-mind mates, enjoying the same sports and activities.
3. Don’t just think sailing or racing. There are lots of opportunities for technicians, designers and support crew too.

THE REGAL
business
One key way to retain and attract staff is to give people greater scope to craft their jobs, research shows.
Approximately 50,000 New Zealanders are predicted to leave the country during the next year, many to pursue overseas work opportunities. University of Auckland academics say job crafting is one concept that can be utilised to increase employee performance,
satisfaction and retention.
“Job crafting is a means through which leaders can support employees to shape their jobs so that they are more aligned with their needs and abilities, which then leads to favourable individual and organisational outcomes,” says professional teaching fellow Dr Deepika Jindal. Jindal and fellow academics Peter Boxall,
Gordon Cheung and Ann Hutchison have undertaken in-depth research overseas and in New Zealand, looking at job crafting, satisfaction and performance. They say a key way to retain and attract sta is to give people greater scope to evolve their jobs so that they don’t feel underutilised, and they do feel their roles are more meaningful and fulfilling.
CRAFTING
First impressions
Most people have heard the term “first impressions count”. Whether it’s going for a job interview, opening the doors to your new business, or meeting someone new, people will judge you within seconds.
The same goes for your digital presence; more specifically, your website.
As consumers, we have di erent needs and desires when it comes to making a purchasing decision. The one thing we all share is that we all buy from people and companies that we know, like, and trust.
The global pandemic has shown us that your online presence is crucial to building this trust. On average, 76 percent of consumers look at a business’ online presence before making a purchasing decision.
So, it is not only crucial for your website to look great, but for it to be easy to use and communicate exactly what you want to tell your customers.
If we use a restaurant as an example, you’ll want to know two things if you’re considering eating there. The first is what’s on the menu, and the second is how can I book a table?
If either of these is hard to find, or presented unprofessionally, you might think twice. The same applies to customers choosing to do business with you or not.
My suggestion is to put yourself in your customers’ shoes and take look at your website. Does it present professionally? Is it easy to use? Does it tell your customers exactly what you do within seconds?
If you’re unsure about any of these, it might be time to think about changing your website.
PAUL BROWN SPECIALIST EMPLOYMENTChoose carefully
A former client finally settled her personal grievance after 2½ years of litigation. The key (money) terms was that she received $20,000 and her employment advocate received $65,000. I kid you not!
Naturally, she is very upset at this outcome and wonders if anything can be done. The short version is no. She signed the record of settlement, a legally binding and enforceable document.
Had she used a lawyer, she could ask the Law Society for “costs revision”. The society has statutory authority to review/amend or even cancel any invoice from a lawyer. This includes investigating a complaint that a lawyer has used litigation and/or a dispute for their own personal benefit, by charging fees disproportionate to any benefit gained by the client. The above situation sounds exactly like that.
As my former client used an advocate, there aren’t many options. If the advocate was a member of the Employment Law Institute of New Zealand (disclaimer: I am on the Executive), they can investigate complaints and impose sanctions - provided the advocate chose to remain a member.
I am not saying that lawyers are necessarily better than advocates, however a key di erence is the consumer protection o ered to lawyers’ clients by the Law Society.
Choose your legal representation very carefully.
If you are an employee, ask (in writing) for your representative to let you know if legal fees are likely to be above any money or settlement paid to you as the client.
Employers should start with a quote or estimate and then obtain regular updates on fees, as matters progress.
AND
rewards
Fernanda Hammett was just 17 when she left her friends and family in San Paulo, bound for Christchurch, New Zealand. English was not her first language and she knew few people beyond her homestay family.
It was a tough time. Her positive ‘cando’ attitude, engaging personality and competitive spirit saw her thrive. Not only did she master the language like a local, she met her life partner Josh.
Following many shared life experiences and adventures in Brazil and in New Zealand, the couple eventually settled in Christchurch and started a family. Shortly after they purchased their first home in Halswell, Josh su ered a workplace accident and underwent the first of eight back surgeries. It was a life-changing and challenging time for the parents of three young children.
Fernanda says, “Josh approached our local Harcourts real estate company. The timing was not right for him but he came home and said, “It’s the perfect job for you.” His faith in her capability - combined with her Mum’s unequivocal supportencouraged her to look into what
was involved.
“My mother was staying with us and she was so supportive. I knew it wouldn’t be easy but I decided to take up the challenge,” Fernanda says.
That positive attitude has seen Fernanda achieve huge success in the five years since she joined the Harcourts Grenadier o ce in Halswell.
Her clients have reaped the rewards as she has overcome many challenges to establish a successful business with the encouragement of her husband, children and wider whānau as she has won hearts and awards in pursuit of her passion.
Her drive, energy and genuine commitment to ensuring the best experience and outcome for her clients has seen her befriend many of the people she has assisted.
TOP TIPS WHEN LOOKING TO BUY
Go to an open home on a rainy day. That way you see the property at its worst.
Transparent transactions are the best. Be sure that your vendor shares information relating to the property and that the agent knows everything relevant to the sale and purchase agreement.
Work with one agent who you trust will work in your best interests to ensure you make the right decision.

IS A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO ACHIEVING
BASIC, BUT BEAUTIFUL SMOKY EYE LOOK.
Blend a matte, mid-tone neutral shade all over your eyelid to create your base.
With a flu y brush, apply a matte, dark-tone shadow to the outer corners of your eyes, packing the colour at your lash line and then blending it upward and outward, until seamless.
Sketch a dark pencil eyeliner along your top and bottom lash lines, then take a pencil brush and blend it out.
Using the same pencil brush, gently blend the same dark eyeshadow from step two across your eyeliner to soften any harsh edges.
If you prefer a matte look, stop here. If you want a little glow, take a clean small brush or your ring finger and press a light shimmery shade into the inner corners of your eyes. Finish with mascara and top it o with some false lashes for added drama.

With the pressures of day-to-day life, from high expectations at the office to big workloads at home, brain fog, mental fatigue, and stress are everywhere.
The expectation to be constantly switched on and to function at a high level is exhausting.
Our brains aren’t conditioned to withstand such constant demands.
With a desire to help combat this, the founders of Ārepa created a formula that improves how the mind works, particularly under stress. It contains powerful New Zealand plant extracts from pine bark, Neuroberry blackcurrants (the world’s most vitamin C packed berry), and L-theanine from Japanese green tea. Available in drinks, capsules, and powder, these ingredients help to deliver the celebrated ‘Ārepa e ect’: calm, focus, and improved mental performance. Run by Kiwis Angus Brown and Zac Robinson (pictured), Ārepa is receiving global attention and awards for its groundbreaking brain drink.
“Multiple studies have shown the positive e ect it has, including on high-performance athletes,” says Angus. The team worked with highly-respected neuroscientist, Professor Andrew Scholey. Since 2015, the company has built a network of avid fans, from those with mild to serious cognitive conditions to followers seeking a healthy, ca einefree energy boost. Find it online and in supermarkets.
ANNABEL TURLEY PHARMACIST AND OWNER20 minutes could save your life
In New Zealand, heart disease kills one person every 90 minutes. Cardiovascular disease can start as early as the second decade of your life and is directly related to your lifestyle choices and genetics.
Our goal is to improve the overall health of New Zealanders while making it as accessible and a ordable as possible. CardiAction is a simple screening service that has been designed to detect these normally unseen risk factors and to ensure personalised lifestyle intervention information is available for all Kiwis. We are now able to understand the health of both your heart and arteries by using a scientifically validated TGA/FDA-approved pulse wave analysis (PWA) machine.
PWA works very similarly to a traditional blood pressure test whereby a cu is attached to your arm and inflated. The test is pain free, non-invasive, and can determine your risk factors in minutes.
We use a fully portable machine that allows you to come to us and us to come into your workplace when convenient. Each heart screening lasts approximately 30 minutes, involves a complete overview of your heart and artery health and educational information is provided on the importance of improving these metrics.
O ering a heart screening to your sta shows that you care about employee health and are encouraging them to live the healthiest lifestyle possible. We can fully tailor our heart screening package to your business needs, as well as including the full service o ered to public bookings.

“I am passionate about empowering women to change their lifestyle, to say yes to loving themselves first.
It really is about taking some me time,” says company director, Vanessa Krambeck.
Lena Kuttel, who is 49, was diagnosed with an aggressive breast cancer in December 2021, three months after she was meant to have her routine mammogram.
Don’t wait
She says the delay could have cost her, and she’s now sharing her story, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, to encourage other women to get their mammograms on time.
“I received a letter in August 2021 inviting me to book my mammogram. When I called them, they told me there was no sta so all appointments were being rescheduled and they’d come back to me. I forgot all about it after that.
“Then in December I noticed swelling and redness in my breast, which I thought was related to my period. When it was worse the next day, I saw my doctor and I was sent to ER. Initially they wanted to send me home with antibiotics, but I pushed to have a mammogram and ultrasound.
“The hospital didn’t do mammograms
so I had an ultrasound after five days in hospital and further tests were ordered.
On 13 December I was told I had breast cancer, on 14 December I got a second letter inviting me for a screening mammogram, which I obviously no longer needed.
“I was diagnosed with a 35mm aggressive tumour. At first I was told I didn’t need chemo, but during my second surgery they found more cancer that hadn’t shown up on the mammogram. I had three surgeries in all, completed three months of chemotherapy and then four weeks of radiation treatment, which finished at the beginning of August.
“If my mammogram had not been delayed, I could have been diagnosed earlier before my cancer spread and I could’ve avoided chemotherapy. I just feel lucky that I got a diagnosis at all, because it means I got treated.”
Breast Cancer Foundation NZ’s (BCFNZ) vision is to see zero deaths from breast cancer. It works towards this by pushing for new frontiers in early detection, treatment and support.
BCFNZ receives no Government funding, relying on donations from the public and its partners to fund its work. Donations go towards programmes in four focus areas to reach ‘zero deaths’: EDUCATION AND AWARENESS campaigns to promote the importance of early detection;
RESEARCH by NZ’s top scientific minds to advance breast cancer prevention, detection and treatment; SUPPORT to help patients get through treatment and recovery; ADVOCACY to improve access to diagnosis, treatment and care.
Solutions
The inflammatory disease a ects an estimated 10 percent of Kiwi women, and with the lack of research and funding, there are barriers to getting a diagnosis. Some good news is that Endometriosis New Zealand recently announced its new Clinical Advisory Committee (CAC), in place to support the charity’s purpose of improving the lives of those who struggle with endometriosis.
The CAC is made up of volunteer clinical practitioners who have a major interest in endometriosis, including five specialist gynaecologists, two active clinical researchers, one pelvic floor
physiotherapist, one clinical psychologist, and one general practitioner.
Chief Executive O cer, Tanya Cooke says, “As Aotearoa’s national endometriosis organisation, we represent the tens of thousands of people living with endometriosis in our country, to help find solutions and improve health outcomes. One of the biggest barriers to this is the quantity of misinformation circulating about the disease.
“The CAC will be working with the ENZ team, to provide and review medical and scientific information, to ensure those with the condition are as informed as possible, in conjunction with improving awareness
and understanding of the disease within the wider community,” she says.
The founding CAC members are Dr Michael Wynn-Williams, Dr Sarah Corbett, Caitlin Day, Dr Anna Ponnampalan, Dr Simon McDowell, Dr Fiona Connell, Dr Keryn Harlow, Leena St Martin, Dr Mike Armour and Dr Orna McGinn.
“I’m looking forward to working with the other members of the Clinical Advisory Committee to guide Endometriosis New Zealand’s strategic direction on clinical issues and provide advice that reflects the perspective of endometriosis su erers and the wider community,” says Dr Michael Wynn-Williams.
For many women, daily pain and discomfort is the harsh reality of living with endometriosis.

city is ON SHOW right now and life is good.
A&P Shows are a time-honoured way to bring together town and country, and bridge the infamous ruralurban divide. They provide an opportunity for New Zealanders to get up close and personal with world-class agricultural technology and produce, all while paying homage to the rural traditions that make up the backbone of this country.
The granddaddy of them all is the NZ Agricultural Show. Harking all the way back to 1863 (not long after the first European settlers arrived in Ōtautahi), the show is run by the Canterbury A&P Association, and attracts around 100,000 people over its three days.
This is your chance to get up close to a huge variety of animals, all the finest examples of their breed, while enjoying a cracker of a day out. Get there on Friday’s Anniversary Day to experience the show at its busiest and best.
NEW ZEALAND CUP WEEK AT RICCARTON PARK 5,9,12 NOVEMBER 2022
Racing at the New Zealand Cup started 10 years BEFORE the telephone was invented. So, any doubts about the heritage and importance of this race are out the window. One of the main events of the season is the New Zealand Cup, run since 1865 at Riccarton Park.
As opposed to the trots at Addington, the New Zealand Cup at Riccarton Park is run by jockey-mounted thoroughbred horses. It’s fast-paced, massively spectator friendly, and Riccarton Park is a stunning venue for it. Mature trees and a park-like setting and wide open spaces.
All three days provide spectacular racing culminating on the 12th with the biggest crowd of the week providing a wonderful finale.
Is this the biggest annual social event in New Zealand? It would be chalenging to find another with as much history and prestige at Addington Raceway’s Cup Week. Peaking with Tuesday’s IRT New Zealand Trotting Cup, tens of thousands have gathered at the closest racecourse to the central city every year since 1904.
There’s a palpable excitement around the complex during this standardbred horseracing event, expected to reach fever pitch in a post-Covid world desperate for a return to normality and nostalgia. As much about glitz and glamour as it’s about horse racing, days at the course don’t get any larger than this. With plenty to entertain everyone, from trotting a cionados to those who never set eyes on the track. If the boss won’t let you skite o on a Tuesday, Friday’s Show Day races are the ones for you.

“T
rading as Marion & Co Jewellery, we are about to celebrate our first birthday in North Canterbury after retailing in Merivale from 2002 until 2015,” says Marion. “I moved to North Canterbury in 2014 to renovate a historic farmhouse so this area is home now.”
Marion has just returned from a successful trip overseas, sourcing semiprecious stones and jewellery.
She has always specialised in high quality, hand-made sterling silver that she personally sources from around the world and New Zealand. Her designs are ageless and timeless.
“It is always special when customers, their children and grandchildren, come in
wearing designs that they have been given and tell me how much they still treasure and wear their favourite pieces,” Marion says.
“I have found it important to design and buy with my customers in mind. I believe that style and quality is always in fashion.
“Trends come and go, style lasts forever. Jewellery is an investment and wearing unique designs is a chance to express your individuality and personal style.”
As far as advice on how to care for your jewellery, Marion recommends not wearing jewellery while sleeping, showering, swimming or gardening.
Pearls should be checked annually to see if the thread is still strong or discoloured, if worn on a regular basis.
Rings, also, should be checked to ensure
that the claws are not damaged as it is heart-breaking to lose a stone due to a worn setting, she adds.
Marion’s industrial-style store, with its steel cabinets, is vibrant with colour from the new arrivals from her latest trip.
There are wonderful choices at all price points for a 21st, wedding anniversaries, birthdays and Christmas gifts.

But for those who don’t feel confident rocking a bold red lip or a dramatic winged liner, then opting for ‘soft-glam’ might be for you. Soft glam has a very e ortless, di used, and almost ethereal look, and is all about enhancing your natural features.
PREP PROPERLY
To achieve a flawless base, you need to start with the correct skin prep. Complete your usual skincare routine, ensuring you are left with a clean face, before applying your moisturiser and SPF if you are attending an outside event. Next, you want to apply a primer, to help your foundation stay put and look gorgeous all day. You can opt for a glowy primer to keep your skin looking luminous and healthy.
BLEND AWAY
You want to avoid any harsh lines when applying foundation, so blending is key and a sponge is a great way to achieve a smooth application. Opt for a buildable foundation and start with less. This way you can build the coverage to your liking. You can then go in with a concealer to touch up any areas you want more coverage, or to brighten the under eye. Set your foundation with a light setting powder, to help it last.
CONTOUR AND COLOUR
Contour is used to mimic the shadows of your face to define, whereas bronzer is a way to warm up your complexion. It is important to know the di erence between these two and to achieve a softer look, a bronze di used approach is better than a sharply defined contour. Adding a touch of blush to the cheeks is a great way to bring a rosy glow to the face. Finish with a dusting of highlighter on your cheekbones.
IN THE EYES
The eyes are often the star of the show and is where you can have a little fun. Smoky neutrals suit all eye colours, and are a timeless glam look. You can add a simple shimmer or sheen to the lid to make the whites of your eyes pop. Or if you want something more, adding a hint of the colour that you are wearing in your outfit can tie a look together. Using liner to shape the eyes will add more intensity.
Getting glammed for a special occasion often means a more dramatic makeup look than day-to-day.
With the correct preparation, getting ready for any occasion can be a breeze. At Moss Spa, you’ll be prepped, pampered and ready for whatever the busy season has in store.
As we farewell the colder weather and welcome the longer, warmer days, it is important to give your skin a refresh. Moss Spa has exactly what you need to increase the skin’s overall functions and improve cell turnover for a younger, fresher look.
Their selection of facials will leave your skin hydrated and glowing, giving you the perfect base for makeup that will look incredible and withstand the length of your event. Pair your facial treatment with a manicure and pedicure and look flawless from head to toe, or even a massage to release unwanted tension.
The experience begins at the door. Step into a world of serenity, welcomed by soft, beautiful hues that deliver relaxation from start to finish. Treat yourself with some ‘me time’ or gift your loved ones a pamper they will love with a Moss Spa voucher this Christmas season.

ONE AND ONLY
When a business has grown and flourished solely from an online presence, it goes without saying that sooner or later, in answer to customer demand, it must become a physical presence.
Renee and Chris Green ran their clothing business online for two years and encouraged by a strong, steadily built, and returning customer base, they trialled a pop-up store in March this year.
“The pop-up received such a great response, we decided to launch O the RAC permanently, with its opening day on 5 August,” Renee says.
NZ and Australian brands are well represented here, with popular labels such as Mi Moso, Lemon Tree Design, Homelee, Stella + Gemma, Label of Love, FATE + BECKER, and Et Alia, to name a few.
With new spring/summer brands arriving daily, now is the time to start putting together a fabulous wardrobe of gorgeous garments to carry you through
the season.
Renee describes the business as a destination shop with a boutique feel.
“It is a one and only in that it o ers an exclusive, one-on-one customer service with beautiful clothing that is e ortless and a ordable.”
For complete top-to-toe styling, browse O the RAC, Shop 2, 333 Harewood Road, Parkside Plaza, or shop online.
What women want
From balls to rock concerts, it is a long summer ahead and women want shoes that work the occasion, in terms of both practicality and appearance.
Trusted brand names are also a top priority, closely followed by the convenience of a onestop-shop to secure those same brands.
Stepping Out stocks leading shoe brands from Aotearoa, Australia and Europe, such as Minx, Django & Juliette, Ziera, Ecco, and Hogl, to name but a few.
Store owners Moana Taylor and Carolyn Ewing say being a locally and privately owned business ensures all merchandise is handpicked with care.
Shoes embrace colour this season. “We love colour, and that’s also coming through in pretty florals,” Carolyn says.
Sneakers remain the go-to shoe for busy women, and this season’s sneakers in pinks, blues and lilacs as well as white, look fab and feel fantastic. If matching shoes to clothes is a problem, Moana recommends bringing the garment or fabric instore.
“We can help the customer find the colour and style of shoe that complements their outfit to perfection.”
With gorgeous shoes in fabulous styles and colours also available on sale, both instore and online, every woman steps into summer looking sensational.
Stepping Out is located at 194 East Street, Ashburton.

ON SHOW IN
Christchurch Spring
We love spring in Christchurch. Our avenues are lined with blossoms, and our wonderful parks are carpeted with da odils. It’s when our city and region are properly ‘On Show’. What’s not to love? You can
watch horses while sipping on bubbles, and then soak in seaside hot pools. Zip down a hillside, and then cheer for international netballers. Gaze up at big stage rock stars, and then sit riverside for cocktails.
During spring, we behave much like nature. We wait for the right time to catch the light. Just like spring flowers draw you
in, the city has attractions and events to draw people out.
Christchurch always has something ‘On Show,’ but spring in Christchurch takes it to a whole new level. So what are you waiting for? Venture out for an adventure.
It’s spring, and Ōtautahi Christchurch is ‘On Show’.
How good is spring?
Longer days, a great schedule of events to enjoy, and it’s when we can say goodbye to our winter hibernation.
Artworks
Set amidst the Selwyn countryside lies the rural town of Leeston (Karumata) – 45 minutes’ drive from both central Christchurch and Ashburton or 25 minutes from Rolleston.
With the charm and friendliness of an old established community, the town is well worth the leisurely drive as a destination in itself or as part of a tour of the area.
There are cafes, restaurants, a mix of retail shops and the Lakeland Art Gallery. This year the Selwyn Spring Show at the Leeston Showgrounds will be held on 15 October.
Lakeland Art Gallery has been open for just over five years now and its reputation has gone from strength to strength. The Gallery is a welcoming place to visit with a wide range of art in various mediums and forms from both local and wider Canterbury artists, new and established.
From a wide range of paintings to
glassware, ceramics, sculpture and other unique creations there is something special for every taste. The gallery itself is spacious with good lighting and it is a pleasure to wander round and view the work on display. The work is refreshed monthly, and one area is reserved for the feature artist of the month. Many of these feature artists are well known Canterbury artists and bookings for this have been made well into next year.
The gallery arranges workshops – usually at the weekend - in a variety of mediums from art to craft to printing for example. The workshops are small and friendly and the tutors are well established in their field.
The gallery also hosts a Wednesday art group during the day and a Life Drawing group that meets Wednesday evening.
There are also “Making” days at the weekend – as in printmaking and clay
sculpture which culminates in a pit firing of the pieces on the local beach.
Visitors are welcomed by the friendly volunteers on duty and are free to wander through the gallery or to ask questions.
The gallery is located at 80 High Street Leeston and is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm daily.

100s of balls in the basket and a device to collect them, which keeps things really moving along.
“We have arcade signage to tell you who is playing next, and once you get to your finals there is a full commentary and a sound and light show,” says owner Logan McMillan, “the vibe is amazing, often the whole bar will pause to watch a final.”
Being fully licensed, the venue is R18, “we are popular with every age range,”
Logan. Open Friday and Saturday from 3pm – 10pm, you can book the entire bar outside of these times too.

A PERFECT
day
With winter behind us and a hint of summer approaching, there’s no better way to enjoy a day with friends and family than at the Geraldine Summer Fete.
Attracting around 4000 visitors from across New Zealand, the Geraldine Summer Fete is now in its 13th year. Attendees can expect a day of relaxing elegance amongst the spring blooms and towering trees of historic Stover, just 10 minutes north of Geraldine, a working farm that has been in the Mackenzie family for four generations.
The Fete takes place on 3 November and is the perfect opportunity to begin your Christmas shopping. There are 200 high-quality artisan stalls, including homewares, art, garden and lifestyle items, children’s and other fashion clothing, as well as delicious food. You will also find the stunning Talbot Silver Jewellery collection with its elegant bespoke pieces o ering a chic timeless look. If you can’t make the Fete, they will also be at the Canterbury A&P Show. Many are looking forward to reconnecting with each other after a gloomy winter, and there can be few more enjoyable ways to celebrate than with a Pimms in the sunshine amid the flowers. So don your best hat and dress for a day of exclusive shopping in a relaxed country atmosphere.
the perfect gift for any occasion.
Memories for life
Holiday Parks are in our Kiwi DNA. We adored them as children, and as adults they provide the perfect relaxing break.
Children growing up in tra cdominated cities discover the complete freedom of roaming the park on bikes or on foot. Choosing between the jumping pillow, exploring, and fun bikes shapes memories found nowhere else. Older generations can do as much or as little as they like, with plenty of company and never a dull moment. A seat in the sun with fresh espresso provides a constant kaleidoscope of interest.
There’s peace of mind that comes with booking a holiday park stay. We expect a joyful but down to earth vacation, right? Hospitality New Zealand Excellence Awards would beg to di er in a big way. Its 2022 People’s Choice Award has been won by the Hanmer Springs Top 10 Holiday Park.
With its mantra of “Memories for Life” and a commitment to creating a world class experience, the prestigious People’s Choice Award is well deserved. The Award itself is 100 percent based on the vote of the
people, and the people have voted Hanmer Springs Top 10 Holiday Park a better experience than luxury lodges and hotels, favourite motels, and international chains.
It is the first time ever a holiday park has won an award. “There were 220 finalists,” says co-owner Jacqui Anderson, “To have become a finalist and represent our industry for the Best Accommodation (Other) category at this prestigious event was a real buzz in itself, but to then be voted as the winners of the People’s Choice Award really pushed the excitement level o the charts - thanks to all our fantastic guests who voted for us.”
Jacqui and husband Dean know that it’s the little things that make a di erence.
The barista co ee available at reception, the locally made gourmet pizzas which guests can cook on the outdoor pizza ovens, a soak in a private wood-fired hot tub, or a luxurious shower in the Italian tiled bathrooms complete with underfloor heating, are just some of the little surprises
that add up to a haven of pleasure.
There’s even an on-site meeting room.
“It is an ideal spot for team building and small retreats with attendees able to have meetings under the radar one day, go jet boating the next, and enjoy world class food throughout,” says Dean.
In the last four years they have added five architecturally designed luxury apartments. “It has bought a whole new level to our business, it really is ‘your home away from home,’” says Jacqui.
on show
Warmer days and nights mean more outdoor activities and there are plenty on offer. Pack a picnic and head on out, or try some of the local cafes and eateries while exploring.
CHECK OUT OUR URBAN BEACHES
Christchurch has a huge coastline with numerous beaches worth visiting. Check out New Brighton for an endless flat beach, Sumner for a bustling seaside suburb and golden sands, and Taylor’s Mistake for remoteness and heritage baches close to the city.
Did you know?
The latest visitor statistics for Christchurch show more than 35,000 made their way to the Garden City in August this year.
RIDE THE WIND WITH VELOCITY KARTS
Harness a windy spring day at Velocity Karts. Their blokarts are like little yachts on land – like naturepowered go-karting but more fun. They can suit any skill level so don’t be intimidated. They’ve also got electric drift karts – one of only two places in the world you can hire them!
WAKA ON AVON
Leaving from Margaret Mahy Playground, this 45 minute waka paddling experience is an amazing historical and cultural trip on Ōtākaro Avon River. Experience the excitement of paddling a hand-crafted waka down the River Avon, and learn about the importance of the waka to Māori culture.
SEE THE BABY ANIMALS IN SPRING
Stroll along the Ōtākaro Avon River to see the wee ducklings. Or better yet, grab a hire scooter and zip along the Avon Loop, then down past Margaret Mahy Playground. Grab the kids (or the big kids) and head to Arion Farm Park or Willowbank to see new-born lambs, pigs, and bunnies hopping around.
AND
kiwi
You enter through the doors of Protocol Bar & Restaurant on Colombo Street and immediately feel an inviting vibe.
The warm tones of the wooden furniture in the bar and the restaurant areas are stylish, comforting and enticing.
Protocol is also contemporary and very Kiwi with its outdoor terrace recently upgraded with new seating and planting - the perfect place to while away a warm summer evening. It’s sunny and sheltered from the wind and a wonderful vantage point from which to watch the world go by.
It’s not only the location and style that makes Protocol a delightful place to relax and enjoy the company of family and friends. Head Chef Roi Ezra’s food has become a huge drawcard in the time he has been with the establishment.
“It’s food with a true Mediterranean influence,” says Protocol’s owner, Genaea Calvert. “We have just introduced a new summer menu with those lighter fresher flavours that people associate with alfresco
dining. But the Lamb Shoulder dish for two with mint jelly, jus, duck fat potatoes and greens is so popular that there was no way we could have taken that o the menu”.
The food at Protocol covers the range from brunch and lunch to dinner and there is also a mouth watering array of small plates and pizzas for another more casual dining option. They have also recently introduced a diverse o ering of craft beers.
Adding to Protocol’s versatility are its two private function rooms, suitable for all kinds of occasions, from canapé parties, to conferences, birthdays or small weddings.
The Lounge, which has separate entry and its own exclave terrace, can accommodate between 60-100 people while the smaller Elevate Room is designed to cater for 40 – 60 guests. With the year passing by with such alarming speed it really is not too early to use that word “Christmas” and Protocol is taking
Christmas function bookings now.
Protocol is open Tuesday – Sunday 11.00am to late.
high tea
Something about sitting down for a High Tea feels extra special. It’s an occasion, and a moment to soak up the finest things in life; deliciously made food, beautifully brewed teas, and fabulous company.
High Tea is an experience that everyone can enjoy, whether it is to catch up with old friends, a treat for you and mum, or something special for the little ones. One that needs to be on your radar is the Garden High Tea by Chateau on the Park, at the Double Tree Hilton Hotel. The entire experience will have you wowed, especially the gorgeous setting and impeccably made and presented menu.
Served at the Garden Court Brasserie, you could not imagine a more serene setting to indulge in a delectable array of sweet and savoury treats.
Everything on the menu is a highlight, with each assortment made with care by the talented team of chefs in the Chateau on the Park kitchen.
Delicate cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches, and flavourful parma ham and melon skewers delight the tastebuds and are amongst the array of beautifully presented savoury options.
Of course, a High Tea isn’t complete without a sprinkle of sweetness, and the sweet treats available are truly something. The flu y sweet scones with jam and butter cannot be missed, and the mini vanilla crème brulees take centre stage, among the many other sweet classics.
The assortment of sweet and savoury bites is perfectly paired with your drink of choice; freshly brewed tea and co ee, or the option of sparkling wine if you’re in the mood to celebrate. There are vegetarian and gluten-free options available too, so something for everyone.
Enjoy an afternoon relaxing and indulging in the beautiful rose garden, where tulips are taking centre stage this spring. The Garden High Tea is available daily, from midday to 4pm. Bookings are essential and can be made at the website below.

PUNTING
Christchurch’s iconic Tramway Restaurant is the perfect venue for spring celebrations.
From corporate functions to social group outings and celebrating special occasions with loved ones, New Zealand’s only tramcar restaurant o ers a venue to remember.
The seasonal menus are curated to focus on local produce, and each dish is perfectly matched with a wine pairing option. The dinner package includes a welcome drink and canapé starter on arrival followed by entrée, main, dessert and tea or co ee to finish. Lunch services, pretheatre dining, breakfasts and morning teas are also available as exclusive o erings for groups.
The vintage 1920s tramcar has been immaculately restored and the 36 seats are spread over two areas of the tram, allowing for smaller groups to have some privacy while other diners are on board in a separate dining section.
Contact the Tramway Restaurant team for a memorable dinner experience for your loved ones, colleagues or delegates, or to enquire about the gift vouchers available to purchase.
The Botanic Gardens are on show in spring: it’s the perfect time to see the blooms.
Punting on the Avon’s punt rides along the Avon River are a relaxing and luxurious way to see the Botanic Gardens’ flora and wildlife up close. Sink back into your seat and take in the sights while your punter poles you along the river with a considered commentary on a shared 30-minute guided tour. Perfect for couples, families and small groups to see the Botanic Gardens from a unique perspective, a tranquil punt ride is also a great option for a corporate group or social outing, making for a relaxing addition to a busy day’s itinerary. It’s a memorable way to see the city’s much-loved Botanic Gardens while experiencing this iconic activity: punts have been operating on Christchurch’s Avon River for over 35 years.
The Punting on the Avon team also o er gift vouchers: a wonderful option for friends and family or valued employees and clients to experience a relaxing ride on the Avon.
decadence
The delectable Parisian-style desserts –the Spiced Caramel Apple, the Lemon Tart and so many others which customers have come to love - are the same.
But Sweet Soul Patisserie has moved from its little spot in the Guthrey Centre to a bigger space under The Terrace on Avon building near the Riverside Market.
Sweet Soul’s managers now have a mezzanine area above their shop itself where they can have a Champagne lounge for celebrations and other functions. Imagine indulging in fine French patisserie and a glass of Champagne before going to the Trotting Cup. Sheer decadence, especially as all the classic desserts will be available in petit versions – tasting plates of all the very best flavours and new limited editions.
The enticing display in the shop cabinet is still at the heart of Sweet Soul Patisserie. “You can see what is happening in the kitchen from the shop,” says comanager Taina Scur. “We’ve spent a good deal of time working on the look of the new premises and been careful to retain the French back-street character of our old place. The fit-out was designed by an architect with French heritage, so that has been a great collaboration.”
Horse racing of both the harness and thoroughbred varieties is in the DNA of the Golden Mile Tavern in the heart of Templeton.
The name itself says it all - the Golden Mile is a horse race held in Bendigo, Victoria each yearand everywhere throughout the facility there are images of horses – even down to the design on the carpet.
So it’s no surprise that at Cup Week time there is extra excitement at the Golden Mile Tavern. The horse racing fraternity from around the country love to stay there, because of the proximity to both Riccarton and Addington race courses and because of the accommodation deals that are available and the excellent food in the restaurant. Templeton Village is also a big racing community and the locals really look forward to the special activities organised over the racing carnival week.
Everything you expect from being at the race courses themselves is available – a Lindauer lawn, live music, complimentary food, best dressed competitions and all the live action on the crystal clear big screen with its brand new high pixel projector. This is the opportunity to dress up and enjoy the great fun and entertainment that the Golden Mile does so well without having to cope with crowds or with searching for a car park.
dining
Fancy an epicurean adventure in your own home?
That’s where the team at World Cuisine can come to your party. Large or small, specialists in dietary requirements, a la carte, and fine dining, the team can cater it.
Owner Liz Maynard has 20 years experience as an international private chef, and enjoys introducing others to a world of flavourful cuisine.
Having travelled the world for 12 years as a private chef, and run her own cooking school in the South of France, she is full of suggestions for in-home and event catering, from small intimate dinners to special occasions for up to 100 people.
Liz and the team can deliver or cook on-site. Platters are popular, she says, especially her “Taste the World” option which can be delivered almost anywhere, anytime.
A platter is one example of exotic tastes from Peru, the Caribbean, Turkey, Italy, Thailand, Mexico. Morocco, Spain, Greece, Germany, France, and more, customised to suit.
In-home cooking lessons are lots of fun, Liz adds, ranging from couples wanting to learn new recipes, to cooking “parties” where themed lessons are part of the entertainment.
If you’d like to experience private chef services, cooking lessons and cooking parties, platter drops, or catering of any type, give Liz a call.

Join us FOR THE RACE
There is always a real buzz around Cup Week with various groups putting on special events to celebrate. The Kaiapoi Club will be taking advantage of the scrapping of Covid-19 restrictions to put on a really good party.
It all kicks o in the week of the Kaikoura and Melbourne cups – Monday 31 October and Tuesday 1 November. There will be big screens set up to watch the racing action and a continuous free sausage sizzle barbeque from 11.00am will be serving much needed sustenance.
NZ Trotting Cup Day itself on Tuesday 8 November – yes it’s going to be returned to all its former glory - will be a chance for Kaiapoi Club punters to dress up, to enjoy a sweepstake called the Punters Club, along with excellent food – and of course the races themselves. Cap the day o with dancing to showband DnD – a fitting end to a great day.
All these activities are typical of the way the Kaiapoi Club constantly looks for fun and interesting ways of attracting locals to the club. They won’t be stopping with the races either. They already have more musical shows planned for the future – a Roy Orbison and Neil Diamond Tribute Show on 22 October and a NZ Country music extravaganza with Jodie Vaughan and Brendan Duggan on 19 November.
It’s no wonder the club is thriving. People just want to have a good time after so many restrictions.

canapes
Celebrations call for Champagne and nice nibbles, especially when getting together with friends.
Before an event, start the sparkle with a glass of bubbles and some delicious canapes. Remember canapes should be bite-sized.
ARE SOME SUGGESTIONS FROM METROPOL:
CUCUMBER SANDWICHES
1 ASPARAGUS ROLLS
2
Use thinly cut white bread with slivers of cucumber, and a cream cheese spread. Spice the cream cheese up with a hint of garlic, or maybe a dash of chilli.
Asparagus season is here so bring out the brown bread, butter it, lightly cook the asparagus, and roll. Or use a light mayonnaise instead of butter.
SMOKED SALMON BLINIS
3
Whip up a batch of small savoury pikelets, top with cream cheese, cold smoked salmon, a squeeze of lemon juice and a sprinkle of caviar. Try using mashed pumpkin in the blinis.
Time for a gin
The Botanist gin supports community gardens in partnership with local bars to drive awareness of the importance of locally grown, sustainabily produced food.
The Botanist, an artisanal gin from Islay in Scotland, has a deep connection to the terroir.
Twenty-two foraged botanicals are hand-picked locally and sustainably across an entire growing season.
They are then carefully dried and slow simmer distilled with pure Islay spring water in a unique Lomond Still, a ectionately nicknamed Ugly Betty.
The result is a smooth yet complex gin that speaks of Islay.
Sustainability has been a vital part of The Botanists journey and why they have a long-term vision to continue to be more sustainable in everything they do.
Becoming B Corp certified was a huge achievement that helped solidify the
commitment towards a more sustainable future.
To raise awareness of sustainable growing practices this October, The Botanist is supporting Community Gardens in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch to help them champion regenerative local food in their communities. Here in Otautahi, they’ll be supporting Roimata Food Commons.
Roimata Food Commons, located in Radley Park, Woolston and serving the wider community, is led by a charitable trust to empower the community to co-create the space to promote organic self-grown produce using permaculture principles that integrates regeneration and supports native biodiversity.
They’ve partnered with local bars here to raise funds for the Roimata Food Commons. Head along to your local bar and for every Botanist Gin drink sold, $5.00 will be donated to Roimata Food Commons.
A great opportunity to catch up with friends at your local bar, enjoy a delicious Gin & Tonic or Negroni and know that you’re not only supporting your local community garden, but the local hospitality too.
Visit the website below to find participating bars. The Botanist Gin is available at all good liquor stores. RRP 700ml $99.

SERVES 3-4
Ingredients
3 free-range eggs
tbsp maple syrup or sugar
cup (150g) plain white flour – wheat, spelt, or gluten-free flour mix
tsp baking powder
milk
pinch of salt
(2 tbsp) butter
cup (about 120g)
blueberries and/ or blackberries
To serve maple syrup natural unsweetened yoghurt
Method
1
Preheat the oven to fan 200°C (non-fan 220°C). Place a heavy-based frying pan (such as a castiron skillet) with a heatproof handle in the oven to preheat. (If you haven’t got a heatproof pan, use a shallow baking dish or cake tin, about 25cm square or round.)
2
In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs and maple syrup or sugar. Sift over the flour, baking powder and salt and stir to combine. Gradually add the milk, stirring between each addition, until a thin batter is achieved – but don’t overmix. Rest the batter while the oven heats.
3
Once the oven is hot, open the door and add the butter to the pan. Wait 2 minutes, then open the oven door again and quickly pour the batter into the pan and scatter over the berries. Work quickly here so that the oven door isn’t open too long.
Cook for 15 minutes, then check if the pancake is baked through, giving it another 2–3 minutes if needed. Serve immediately, cut into wedges, with

easy to drink
It links you through history to the 11th century, when gin was valued for medicinal properties. Its taste probably led to some face pulling, but one local company is dedicated to ensuring you won’t need a spoonful of sugar to help their fresh modern creations go down.
Humdinger Gin is a husbandand-wife distillery with two stunning gins.
The Dry Gin designed by Andrew Lewis is based on his palate, while the Citrus Gin was designed by Saskia Lewis based on her ideal gin.
The Dry Gin received a gold medal at the NZ Spirits Awards in 2021, but The Citrus Gin was in the gold medal range for quality
and value at the 2022 London Spirits Competition (picking up a Silver Medal overall).
“Gin is traditionally known for its juniper-forward flavour, complex flavours, and long finish. Humdinger’s Citrus Gin is consciously designed to be citrusforward, crisp, and uncomplicated (which makes it dangerously easy to drink),” says Andrew.
At distillery tastings, the Citrus Gin is the most popular, giving Saskia bragging rights, but Andrew is happy being second best to his wife.
“It’s a popular gift, the giver often finds the bottle is opened and enjoyed while they are there!” says Andrew.
with love
If that establishment also served great organic co ee in a welcoming atmosphere, then we would be blessed indeed.
We are undeniably lucky that just such a haven exists in Amberley, serving not only the local community, but travellers, tradies, and truckies that travel through the town.
As both a trained chef and the owner of Bunco’s Diner, Derek Morris says, “My favourite thing is cooking things fresh in-house for our wonderful community that has supported us so superbly over the last two rocky years.”
The diner opens at 6am weekdays, 7am on Saturdays and 8am on Sundays so a delicious breakfast anywhere on the scale from very healthy to totally comfort food is always available, and the all-day menu runs until 3pm. Derek is thrilled to be now open Thursday - Sunday until 8pm with a full takeaway menu that includes a little surprise or two.
“I hope to open on other week nights soon, and we would love to see you for dine in or takeaway,” says Derek.
We would all be the richer for having access to a local diner that makes everything from scratch, using fresh ingredients, and combining them with a lot of love.
A well-deserved sip on a refreshing gin is more than just an in-the-moment joy.

Smoky chicken
COURTESY OF Lodge Cast Iron 200g chorizo, sliced 8 shallots, halved 500g cherry tomatoes
2 red capsicums, chopped
1 head of garlic, top trimmed 6 boneless chicken thighs, skin on 2 Tbsp olive oil
1/2 tsp smoked paprika
2 sprigs of fresh rosemary 2 Tbsp red wine vinegar
2 tsp caster sugar 390g tin of butter beans, drained 200g kalamata olives sea salt & cracked pepper to taste
WITH CHORIZO AND BUTTER BEANS
1
Heat the oven to 180ºC fan bake. In a small Lodge skillet, fry chorizo until crispy. There’s no need to add oil to the pan because chorizo has a lot of fat in it.
2
Place the chorizo in the Lodge cast iron roasting dish, along with the shallots, cherry tomatoes, red capsicum, garlic and chicken.
3
Top with olive oil, smoked paprika, rosemary, red wine vinegar, caster sugar and season with salt and pepper. Toss to combine and then turn the chicken thighs skin side up.
4
5
Place in the oven and roast for 40 minutes. Occasionally baste the chicken thighs with juices.
Remove the chicken thighs from the roasting dish and set aside. Add the butter beans and olives and gently stir through. Place the chicken thighs back on top and return to the oven for 10-15 minutes or until chicken is cooked through and golden brown.

S P R I N G
refresh
A good refresh of your space is all that’s needed to fall back in love with your home after a winter cooped up inside.
HERE ARE A FEW SIMPLE IDEAS ON HOW TO REFRESH YOUR HOME, AND LET SPRING IN.
DE-CLUTTER AND ORGANISE
Have a good look at each room in the house and ask yourself a question - have you accumulated unnecessary items over winter? Take some time to de-clutter, and donate unwanted items to charity. In the famous words of Marie Kondo, if an item no longer ‘sparks joy’ then it’s time for it to go.
FOCUS ON THE OUTDOORS
It’s a great time to focus our attention back on our outdoor living spaces. Rearrange inside furniture for optimal indoor/outdoor flow and replace any outdoor furniture that looks worse for wear. Be sure to protect furniture and furnishings from UV light as the harsher sun starts to arrive.
SWITCH UP YOUR DETAILS
Accessories are a great way to update your interior with the seasons. You can try out new trends without over-committing, and can give your space a whole new feel. Change out cushion covers, fill a new vase or two with some spring flowers and add a splash of colour to your walls with artwork.
Hot colours, such as bold reds, yellows, oranges and bright pinks, grab the eye and make a garden pop. Designers often use masses of hot colours to make a big garden feel more intimate, although many gardeners plant them simply for their stand-out hues.
During the spring months, red, orange and yellow flowers lift their heads to the sun, often mixed in with the soft pastels of spring bulbs.
Creating a hot colour scheme in your garden is easy, just pick the right colour and kind of plants, and add balance with a few cool-toned varieties. Bright colours add drama and bring the area into the foreground. Hot colours work best in sunny gardens, and as they appear closer they make a garden feel more intimate.
When grouping plants, keep in mind whether they need similar conditions and will flower at the same time.
Plants to try
CLIVIAS – Versatile, hardy and full of colour, clivia can be grown in beds or pots, and look fabulous in mass plantings. Plant out of direct sunlight, such as underneath trees, or anywhere shaded. Evergreen plants, they look great all year round, with deep green foliage and bright orange flowers. Clivias are easy to grow, and are clumping plants so initially space them at least 30cm apart. Plant in free draining soil, with the roots below the soil’s surface.
DAHLIAS – The best time to plant dahlias is now (October), although they can be planted anytime from mid-August through to late December. Dahlias love sun, so choose a nice sunny spot in your garden, and plant in well drained, loamy soil. Plant dahlia tubers about 5-10cm deep and about 50cm apart with the eye facing upwards. Water well, and keep moist being careful not to over-water. For plenty of flowers, pinch out the tops of your dahlia plants after the second set of leaves has developed.
ROSES – Roses are some of the most popular and beautiful flowering shrubs grown, however the thought of thorns puts many gardeners o growing them. It’s important to choose a site receiving at least six hours of sun each day, and to plant in well-drained, fertile soil. Plant dormant roses now (in early spring) or in autumn. Potted plants can be planted any time between spring and autumn, but preferably now.
Forecast Hamptons
LIVING ROOM
Light, bright and whitewashed with a sophisticated yet beachy vibe that is effortless and calming.
Hamptons style interiors are an Americanised version of French interior design styles such as Baroque, Rococo and Empire. The look is inspired by the architecture and decorating of holiday homes in the luxury seaside communities that hug the eastern coast of upstate New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
The fresh, airy palette of white-washed linens, natural textures, ocean inspired blues and freshly painted white timber finishes work beautifully in New Zealand homes.
Features such as this living room’s tongue-and-groove panelling on the lower half of the wall in misty Resene Sea Fog go the extra mile to create a classic and elegant space. Reminiscent of the homes and baches of yesteryear, the tongue-and-groove panelling adds an extra touch of charm to the space, whilst also introducing a modern twist with a two-toned wall.
The Hamptons colour palette is clear and crisp, capturing the wild nature of the ocean and condensing it into a cultivated scheme of clear blues and crisp whites. Blue is one of the most calming colours and the Hamptons style explores this through a range of blue hues. For a more modest look, paint your walls in a pale, almost pastel blue such as Resene Forecast or Resene Duck Egg Blue.
If you want to keep it traditional, introduce navy blues instead. Dark Resene Bunting and Resene Blue Night will work wonders in any space, adding a sense of depth and sophistication.
Whether your home is a new build or a vintage bach, you can easily achieve a sophisticated Hamptons look with Resene’s wide range of ocean blues, sandy creams and crisp whites.

You love your neighbourhood, and the children are settled and happy in their local schools. The only catch in the whole setup is that the house just isn’t quite right.
You really don’t want to move away but could definitely do with more living space, skylights to brighten the bedrooms, a second bathroom, and some beautiful landscaping to bring the place together as a polished package.
With spring in full swing and summer around the corner, it’s a great time to act on those daydreams about home renovation. With the right builder, you can get amazing results without needing to leave your comfort zone.
The right builder is only a phone call away. DGI Morgan Ltd is the team for anything from minor to major renovations, and they o er a full landscaping service too. “We are always available to talk on the same day you call, and we can arrange
a meeting within the week,” says Director David Morgan. “Stage one is to discuss your ideas, and then can meet to pull the vision together. We will make sure we are a good fit for each other, but we are confident we will be, and that we will more than meet all of your requirements.”
The next steps involve talking about the process and clients’ goals, and finalising the design to meet the budget. “We make sure we have designed a quality product that will meet the test of time,” says David.
The team are able to provide a huge range of services in-house with sister businesses in glass and glazing, and steel and fabrication.
Traditional craftsmanship is at the heart of every project. DGI Morgan Ltd not only brings the traditional can-do approach, but David is also a shipwright and boatbuilder by training, “I’m all about quality work, detailing, and high-end finishes.”

TIP
If the board becomes wet and green when chopping herbs, you’re possibly chopping too small and losing goodness.
ink Summer THINK SALAD
We love the comfort of winter veggies like baked leeks and cauliflower cheese, but right now we’re looking forward to summer salad days.
Freshness is the key and that’s easy when you have everything growing a few steps from the kitchen. Current vegetable prices are high on the ‘scary scale’ so growing means saving (and satisfaction). Knowing what’s been sprayed on what you eat is a perfect reason to go ‘homegrown’.
A good vegetable garden is a real work of art so make it a feature using raised beds plus obelisks for climbing peas and beans, with pots strategically placed. Herbs are one of the keys to summer deliciousness so give them space for the easy way to turn every meal into a culinary masterpiece.
Herbs respond well to sheltered conditions and liquid
feeding. Salads can be pretty much based on anything so don’t limit yourself to lettuce.
Peter from Terra Viva says, “My favourite is based on raw broccoli with cranberries, pumpkin seeds, pinenuts, lemon rind, mayo, and apple cider vinegar. Nothing beats a really good potato salad with small bacon pieces, slivered gherkins, olives, and skinned broad beans. Another favourite is sweet rocket with parmesan and roasted almonds and a light vinaigrette.”
Try di erent coloured cherry tomatoes with roasted and skinned yellow and red capsicums, or roasted asparagus, avocado, and broad beans.
GET STARTED WITH HERBS
Sweet Basil is the most popular with its many uses and needs plenty of sheltered heat. Basil bruises easily so tear rather than chop.
Parsley is an all-year round herb with great flavour and it is full of iron. Stalks should not be cut o but pulled from the base.
Mint and tomatoes are made for each other.
Rosemary has a strong flavour so use sparingly. Stu into pockets on lamb with garlic.
Coriander is perfect for many Asian flavours.
Tarragon is great for fish or chicken dishes. Good in sauces and summer dressings.
Chives are easy to grow and a fresh taste for summer salads.
Thyme works well for all cooked dishes including casseroles. Oregano and marjoram are great for slow-cooked mince dishes with tomato.
Sage is tasty deep fried to add crunch for toppings, or in stu ngs and meat dishes.
Dill is great with fish, try a smoked salmon, cucumber and dill sandwich. Dill loves full sun with good drainage.
Spring - four seasons in one day!

Art park
A unique destination in North Canterbury reopens to the public on 14 October.
It’s a green and shady garden with towering trees and splashes of floral colour. A sculpture park with over 80 steel pieces reflecting the artistry of their creator Allan O‘Loughlin. Surprisingly, it’s also a shopping location at Andrea Wadsworth’s home decor gift shop full of special pieces – including steel flowers and hearts for the garden made by Allan.
The Rusty Acre is situated 25 minutes north of Christchurch at 1 Roscrea Place, Mandeville. Established from a bare paddock in 1993 it is now a tranquil place to bring a picnic, admire the creativity, and of course indulge in some retail therapy.
Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10am – 4pm.
light up
Alabour of love for one family for more than 50 years, the garden will on display on 20 November as a fundraiser for The Court Theatre.
Penny and John Zino started creating Flaxmere Garden back in 1966. The challenges that confronted them then are still constant threats. This is a harsh environment where extreme weather conditions such as wind, drought, snowfalls and late frosts can all wreck havoc on the garden. It is a testament therefore to the Zinos’ dedication over so many years that Flaxmere today is without question, a world class garden.
Some visiting Flaxmere will simply enjoy the moment and appreciate the beauty of what they see. Others will have the knowledge to see how the wonderful e ects of all the various garden areas have been created. And there are so many areas to see from the homestead garden and house lawn to the swimming pools garden, the rose
garden, the native garden, the perennial and grasses garden, not forgetting the woodland and pond environments.
Working at Flaxmere is gardening on a huge scale beneath the awesome shadow of the Southern Alps. It’s big picture gardening – no fussy weeding here – and even a wheelbarrow isn’t much use. You need great drays to transport plants, fertiliser and pea straw as well as to dump frequent mountains of rubbish. There are dozens of roses to be pruned as well as numerous hydrangeas and that’s before even looking at the large trees to be thinned, trimmed and sometimes felled. A visit here will have you in awe of the thousands of hours of blood, sweat, tears and even heartache that have been poured into this inspiring high country garden.
The visit in November organised by The Friends of The Court Theatre, is when Flaxmere Garden is at its best with most things in full bloom. The roses and the peonies will be a riot of beautiful colour,
but there will still be some rhododendrons flowering and lots of fresh new lime-green budding trees. Hostas, euphorbia, primula candelabra, foxgloves and delphiniums will all add to the colour and vibrancy of Flaxmere in late spring.

awards
Designer Sam Connell of Figure & Ground won four awards at the 2022 Regional ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Awards.
AMerivale development, Aikmans Road, by Connell received a Highly Commended in the Residential Multi-Unit Dwelling category.
These six distinctive townhouses showcase a contemporary aesthetic and desirable street appeal.
Clad in a combination of textured plaster and cedar, the warmth of timber carries through the interior to floor and joinery finishes and finally to the more informal outdoor decking. ADNZ judges say the contemporary form of the gable creates a simple, well-proportioned street frontage, articulating the residential scale of each townhouse. “Floor to ceiling openings create light filled, spacious interior spaces and this scale is carried through interior finishes to give a sense of luxurious calm,” they add.
Connell also received a Highly Commended in the Residential MultiUnit Dwelling category for a project on Worcester Street, a Commended in the same category for a project on Innes Road and a Commended in the Residential New Home Between 150m2 and 300m2 category for a St Albans home.

PETRIE CONSTRUCTION
Credit also goes to the builder, Petrie Construction, an architectural building company specialising in new builds, renovations and multi-dwelling developments.
Established in April 2017, it is owned and operated by Christchurch couple, Samuel and Honor Petrie. “We believe investing in family and people is both a privilege and rewarding,” they say.
“Looking after you, your family and your investment is the foundation of our business; from understanding your needs to delivering high quality craftsmanship and choosing trusted sub-contractors.
in concrete
Described as “an incredible concrete family home”, Scarborough Béton Brut, perched on the on the hills overlooking Scarborough, won the Regional Award for Residential Interiors, and was Highly Commended for a Residential New Home over 300m2.
Concrete proved a necessity on the very steep, geotechnically challenging site, explains Greg.
“We chose to embrace it, keeping it naked and raw, expressing the variations in texture and colour inherent within its composition as well as a result of the construction methodology to place it.”
The end result is a multi-awardwinning, spacious home that is e cient, permanent, and easy to live in, with a design that focuses on being a part of its environment rather than dominating it.
Judges commented, “Timber shuttering, selected for its strong grain, has been expressed in the surface finish of the concrete walls, giving an aesthetic that is raw and natural, like the environment the building is situated in.
“The concrete in the floor is full of depth, coloured and polished to give a counterpoint. Considered planning has created a home where occupants can embrace the vastness of the view as well as retreat and take refuge,” they said.
ARCHITECTURAL BUILDERS
Scarborough Béton Brut was built by Hoogervorst Architectural Builders, a company that specialises in one-o architecturally-designed new homes, and also as high-spec renovations and extensions. Based in Christchurch, the family-owned firm has been building architecturally-designed homes throughout Canterbury for more than 25 years and has a strong reputation for its rigorous attention to detail. “We take enormous pride in creating unique, stunning homes and making the architect and the client’s dream a reality,” says Nick Hoogervorst.
three awards
Garry Mayne of Studio 4 Architects Ltd won three awards for three projects at the 2022 Regional ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Awards, including a Commended in the Residential New Home over 300m2 category for this home (pictured) in Timaru.
Located within a residential area with a rolling rural outlook in Timaru, the client brief was for a modern entertainer’s home, suited to a social lifestyle. They wanted a home that sat comfortably on the site, to be functional and have outdoor living spaces that connected with the views and can be used year-round. It has a central kitchen that acts as the heart of the home with access to the outdoor areas on both sides of the house. Contrasting and striking low
maintenance materials were used.
Judges noted that the modernist family home, in a residential area with rural outlook, is an excellent example of how considered architecture can deliver on the needs of a growing family within the confines of a sub divided site.
Studio 4 Architects Ltd (previously Chilton & Mayne) has a collective portfolio of over 75 years’ experience.
“We take pride in creating enduring spaces for our clients to enjoy. For us great design is about passion, an extension of who we are and what we believe in,” says Garry.

One moment you are the custodian of a piece of cutting-edge high-tech gadgetry, and the next it has been relegated to that pile marked for the next garage sale.
The same applies to cars. Even the most entry level models incorporate features such as a 360-degree reversing camera, parking sensors and safety gear designed to keep you in your lane. Most cars can also detect a stationary vehicle in front of you and put the brakes on quicker than you could.
While this is incredible stu , it does bear an interesting thought.
With all this modern technology to assist us while driving and parking, are we becoming dependent on it rather than on our own wits behind the wheel? Do we know how to maintain a following distance of two seconds without having our adaptive cruise control to do it for us? Or can we instinctively judge the distance between us and the car behind us when parallel parking?
Having the technology on hand is great, but don’t let it overtake your own common sense.
The rate at which technology continues to develop and expand in our everyday lives is staggering.
WHY GO ELECTRIC?
The number of electric vehicles on New Zealand’s roads is increasing steadily, as more models become available, designs and technology improve.
Electric vehicles now include cars, buses, trucks of all sizes, and even big-rig tractor trailers that are at least partially powered by electricity.
Electric vehicles fall into three main categories:
•
Battery electric vehicles powered by electricity stored
a battery pack.
hybrids
electric motor
• Fuel cell vehicles
large

battery.
HERE ARE SOME REASONS FOR SWITCHING TO ELECTRIC:
1. Electric vehicles are saving the climate
and diesel driven vehicles are a large source of climate pollution. Going electric will lessen dangerous emissions.
A healthier option.

REVIEW: E-DIRTBIKE FUN
A whole lot of fun was the verdict when E-Mega Store manager and keen motorcross rider
Jeremy Joseph took his first ride on a Talaria Sting MX. Here’s what he has to say...
Ibasically grew up on dirt bikes and this love for motorcycles progressed into highperformance road and dirt bikes, where I raced KTM1290 Super Duke R’s and on dirt, I rode KTM 300 SX and 450XC-F. I was very sceptical as to who would want a bicycle with an electric motor. I said things like, ‘it has no power’, ‘it’s down on size’, ‘it makes no sense.’ The Talaria would prove me wrong.
At first, I was trying to ride it like a dirt bike and all my concerns were confirmed. But then I changed how I rode it and quickly realised it was not a dirt bike. Once I changed my expectation and riding style, I began to have fun. A LOT of fun.
This is not a wheelie machine – there’s no power to blast out of corners or lift the front wheel to jump. It’s about momentum and carrying speed through corners, about progressive speed and exploration. Whenever I
was on a dirt bike, you are completely focused on the riding, the speed and preparing the bike into and out of corners, hitting jumps perfectly, getting your foot out and powering through ruts. This was di erent.
It’s not about hanging on to the bike, it’s about being one with nature, it’s about exploration. Tight-packed twisty trails are where this bike shines and the lightweight frame gives it a very responsive ride and handling. I could see this bike being great for riders of all ages and riding capabilities. It’s not loud or scary, its silent and approachable. I could see my mates who had only ever ridden mountain bikes now joining me for a ride. I recommend trying one out - it will give you a totally new experience.
I am not saying I am trading in my dirt bikes, but I am saying at times this is what I want, and this is how I want to ride and for that reason, I am going to get myself a Talaria Sting.
