Marine Leisure Lifestyle at its Best:

Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show

Held from the 22nd to the 24th of November at Ocean Marina Yacht Club, the 2013 Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show was the second edition and the biggest and best yet.The multi-million dollar line-up of boats, supercars and bikes, luxury properties, marine products and servicesand much more attracted 4,334 visitors to the three-day show.Expatriates from Thailand and Asia, together with Thai nationals who are showing an increasing interest in the marine leisure lifestyle were among the attendees. In only its second year, the boat show had a strong marketing plan targeting Bangkok-based Thais and expatriates from the surrounding region, and delivered sales and tangible leads for exhibitors. Talking of the Boat Show’s aims, Mrs. Supatra Angkawinijwong, Deputy Managing Director of Ocean Property, the organizers, said, “Having launched the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show last year, our goals for 2013 were to grow the number of exhibitors and display area, and to attract a larger and more diverse visitor demographic. Talking to exhibitors, they were very happy and the show was a great success.” The success was confirmed by many exhibitors, including Sergio Loiacono, Simpson Marine’s Thailand Country Manager. “This was our second year at the show and you can see the progress. We have a few interesting clients as a result of it. Probably 30-40% of visitors to our display were Thai, 30% Russian and the rest a mix of expat nationalities.” “Princess Yachts Bangkok, a subsidiary of the luxury importer Niche Cars, presented a selection of luxury motor yachts at the show, including the popular V39 sports cruiser. “We had a lot of interest from visitors and welcomed celebrities and well-known businessmen to our display. During the show, we sold a THB21.5 million yacht and also expect to sell three more yachts from the it”, said Ms. Anchita Chotisirikul, Secretary to the Managing Directorof Niche Cars Co., Ltd. Wirat Pholpradab, President of A.G. Cars & Marine Co., Ltd., the exclusive dealer in Thailand for the well-known Cranchi motor yachts, commented on traffic on the first day: “We had more than 50 visitors, and more than 20 of them showed genuine interest in buying a Cranchi M44 HT.” 14

Complementing the luxury boats and marine lifestyle offerings at the 2013 show was a large display of leading auto marques, including Lamborghini, Porsche, Land Rover, Harley Davidson and Ducati. Both Ducati and Harley Davidson were showing new models for the first time in Thailand, and visitor feedback was strong. NuttachedSuapechra, General Manager of Ducati Pattaya said, “This is our first year here and we have met many potential buyers, with approximately 20-30% of our visitors expats. Some of these plan to go to our shop after the show.” The demographics of Thailand’s marine marketplace are changing. Many Russians are buying boats and there is a strong interest from overseas buyers such as those from Singapore and Hong Kong, who can conveniently fly to Bangkok, which is just 1-2 hours from Pattaya. Thais living in Bangkok who are looking for a seaside lifestyle on the weekend are also interested. “We see an exponential growth in Russians buying boats in Pattaya but there is also a genuine interest from Thais in buying sailing boats compared to a few years back when they were only considering buying motor yachts,” said Mr. Loiacono.

The 2013 in-water yacht display was bigger and better than ever before, showing the growing interest in boating in Thailand. Top yacht brands from day boats to superyachts, locally-built boats of international standard and marine products and services were complemented by luxury automobiles, villas and condominiums, and elegant timepieces by Edox. A resounding success, the 2013 Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show delivered strong visitor traffic, genuine leads and actual sales for exhibitors. www.oceanmarinaboatshow.com About Ocean Marina Situated on Jomtien Beach in greater Pattaya, Ocean Marina is Thailand’s premier marina resort complex and the largest in South East Asia, a short drive from Bangkok and just one hour from Suvarnabhumi International Airport. FOOD OR ART: PHOTOGRAPHY AND FINE DINING IN THE AGE OF INSTAGRAM

y

ou walk into a restaurant and order your food. The food arrives, and before anyone at the table even lifts their forks, the smartphones come out. One quick snapshot of your plate, perhaps a selfie with the lemon meringue pie if you’re feeling adventurous, and only then is the food enjoyed. This is a common ritual seen all around our food-obsessed city. We follow foodie friends and celebs on Instagram and Facebook who regularly bombard us with pictures of food they are enjoying. A dear friend recently remarked how her sister constantly posts pictures of every expensive meal she eats. One woman’s plate on Instagram is another’s envy. Although as Thai we love our pictures of food, and we are certainly not alone, celebrity foodies like Anthony Bourdain have over a million followers on Twitter. There has however been an interesting take on this food-meets-photographymeets-the-smartphone world.

According to the Guardian, a Belgian Michelin-starchef Julien Burlat has devised a novel camera set up to take pictures of food in the kitchen before they get to the diner. While most of us quickly

finish off our chocolate mousse or salmon tartar after we’ve taken a few pictures, the Belgian chef would actually like to preserve the images of the food as works of art. The Guardian reports that Burlat’s idea was picked up by Jef Geys, a Flemish artist who is known for artworks that run against the vein of the ‘normal’ art world. At an art show which recently concluded in mid-October, Geys provided camera setups to top London restaurants to take pictures of food they liked. There was one catch, however. For his show Geys superimposed the images from the restaurants under news headlines from that given moment. The artwork was presented live on a web feed. So, pictures of delicious food sometimes appeared under captions of breaking news focused on disasters in China and street protests in Greece. Although Geys’ project may seem shocking and like a wag of the finger at people who take pictures of food, it is quite unique in the sense that food can move from being admired for a brief moment on your Instagram to being preserved as art for posterity. Regardless, if you love food, get your smartphones out, we all want to see what you’re eating.

Pattaya will open its newest pier next year in an effort to boost tourism. It will be located at Laem Bali Hai, next to the present Bali Hai pier (where visitors board ferries to Koh Lan). The new facility will accommodate up to 360 boats, and the cost is estimated at 733 million THB.

Thai Lion Air unveiled an aggressive marketing strategy that should trigger a price war with its direct competitor, AirAsia. Seeking to undercut its rival, TLA launched its first route on December 4, 2013, flying from Bangkok to Chiang Mai for a mere 500 THB (inclusive of all taxes).

A California jury awarded Apple Inc. US $290.45 million in a patent retrial against Samsung Electronics Co Ltd. Apple had formerly requested US $379.8 million, while Samsung argued that it should have to pay only US $52.7 million.

If “anything” can be sold on the internet,

why not “something”

The Something Store

S

omething Store Inc. was formed in 2007, and is located in Long Island, New York. In the summer of that year, Sami Bayrakci, the founder, was surfing the Internet looking for a present for a friend. After hours of browsing he decided it would be much nicer if someone would make a decision for him. That’s when the idea of SomethingStore. com came to him. The idea was that customers would pay a flat price of US $10, and the company would then offer them something, not letting them know what it was until they received it. Bayrakci shared his idea with friends, but most thought it would never work. However he still wanted to give it a try, so he invested US $3000 for supplies, made a simple website, and started off

selling small, lightweight items to keep shipping costs down (as the store ships worldwide). But then he started to throw in some expensive goods, like a digital camera, iPod touch, a Wii system, and even a Dell laptop, believing that the key was that people are suckers for a surprise if there’s the anticipation of getting an amazing bargain for just ten bucks. He also realized people still like getting surprises in the mail. He sold about 1,000 “somethings” in each of his first few months in business, and by 2008 his business was already profitable. To date, almost 150,000 gifts have been shipped – to over 60 countries – so if you like surprises, go to www.somethingstore.com and see what your “something” might be. 17

Get GLAMMED UP with the Latest Trends

By Kirati Sachasingh

BOUDOIR FASHION By Louis Vuitton Boudoir fashion, as with other recent trends, has continued to grow and evolve, with the lingerie dress being its current popular incarnation. Bedroom-only garments seemed a little too risqué to sport publicly until sexy slinky spaghetti straps made their way onto the runways of Louis Vuitton. To carry off this trend yourself, try pairing a plain negligee or a LV spaghetti strap dress (available at LV stores in major department stores) with a long length print sweater, platforms, and thin golden/silver jewelry.

HERS

PVC MATERIALS By Burberry We have seen the use of PVC materials in the bags of well-known brands last year – like Furla’s famous candy bags – but this season, it has expanded into the luxury garments sphere. The fulllength and cropped PVC coats from the Burberry Prorsum collection stood out in particular, along with the company’s structured pants and above knee-length skirts. As PVC materials add that element of “puff” and “graphic futurism” to your attire, other pieces to match should be of thin material, and as simple as possible. Pair your outfit with funky fashion shades or rock-chic accessories, and opt for simpler shoes or boots.

WORDPLAY T-SHIRTS By Alexander Wang The plastering of words across everything, from T-shirts to clutch bags, ha s b e e n en d ors ed b y Hollywood fashionistas the past week or so and, from what we’ve noticed, it doesn’t really matter what’s being said as long as its said loud and clear. The key here is to be witty, and generate as much interest and attention as possible. Alexander Wang’s ‘Parental Advisory’ message, with his niece wearing a small-sized version of it, has been the highlight of this trend. But other labels have followed suit nicely, some with glow in the dark and/or bold lettering, or environmental messages. 20

INVERSE SHIRT BUTTONING By Diesel All you need is a buttoned-down shirt to don this very simple, yet stylish trend. Rather than leaving the top few buttons of your shirt undone and baring some cleavage, invert the entire process. Button up the top few instead, and leave the rest to float – baring some midriff. Especially with the holidays approaching, you could pair an inversely buttoned Diesel Black and Gold buttoned down shirt (www.dieselblackgold. com) with shorts, for at the beach, or match the same shirt with a nice pair of jeans. There’s also no reason why this trend must be limited only to shirts, as many designers have already done the same with dresses.

RED SILK COATS By Prada The burst of fuchsia, dark red and mustard coats – either matched with complimentary coloured trousers, or even styled head-to-toe in the same colour – is an enterprising ensemble all men should try to carry off during this festive month. Be gutsy and opt for Prada’s red silk claret jacket (www.prada.com/en), and try pairing it with teal trousers. You may well be the biggest treat at someone’s New Year’s Eve party.

HIS

SUPERSIZE SQUARES By Jil Sander This season’s choice of pattern is bold squares – be it checks, plaids, stripes, or tartans. This chessboard look might be a bit difficult to pull off, so try starting with something less striking, like a dress shirt and solid colored trousers. Then get experimental, and try combining Jil Sander’s collection of checks with stripes, plaids, or so on (www.jilsander.com). The art of pattern mixing is to make sure the chosen patterns have different sizes and densities, in order to create balance, so avoid wearing dense, or too similar, patterns together.

LEMONGRASS POLO SHIRTS By Roccobarocco If you would like to achieve an effortless elegance for a casual day out in Bangkok, dress a polo shirt with a well-fitted pair of jeans or rolled up trousers. The key here is to select the shirt colour from a palette of pretty, candy-coloured brights and pastels. Roccobarocco’s Lemongrass Polo Shirts (www.roccobarocco.com) can be matched with rolled up linen pants – to achieve the ideal Capri length – and accessorized with monogrammed loafers or colorful sneakers. And don’t forget the ever-present summery hat, to achieve that perfectly casual look.

ROBE By John Lewis How did robes make the list of current must-have fashion items? Well, robes are convenient and comfortable – and it’s merely as simple as that! They provide the perfect outfit for lounging around one’s home, especially significant with the long holidays coming up. For the soft and cozy feel, John Lewis’ pure-cotton robe – fashioned with bold stripes, 2 front pockets and a shawl collar – will be just what you want to slip on first thing in the morning. You can even sleep in it, and they are easily to slip in or out of, before and after showering, and robes can even be shared with your partner. Available online at www.macys.com.

Planting seeds of financial wisdom

By Aunyapach Jirapattaroj

Getting to Know Stock Investment What is stock investment? According to the Investopedia dictionary: “It is a type of security that signifies ownership in a corporation, and represents a claim on part of the corporation’s assets and earnings.” Basically, when you purchase a stock, you become one of the owners of the company, with specified rights depending on type of stock you purchase. If you are entitled to vote at shareholders meetings, and receive dividends, you own “Common Stock”. Another type is called “Preferred Stock”, which means you generally have no voting

rights, but you have a higher claim on assets and earnings than common stock holders. For example, owners of preferred stock receive dividend before common shareholders, and have priority in the event that a company goes bankrupt and is liquidated. However, when you hear people talk about stock investment, it usually refers to common stock investment.

"

It is unavoidable talking about personal financial management without mentioning stock investment, as it has the potential to make your portfolio grow exponentially.

Types of common stocks vary, and the diversification level of the portfolio would be the key for classifying stocks as the following:

1.

Distressed: Companies that having serious

5.

Aggressive Growth: Companies that

2.

Hard Asset: Companies involved with the exploitation of hard assets (real estate, metals, etc.). They have very low correlation with overall stock market and are looked on as inflation hedges.

6.

Classic Growth: These companies are Blue Chip stocks, churning out steady growth (and a low risk of losing capital investment).

3.

Cyclical: Companies that are expected to fluctuate in line with overall economy (in a bull market they perform well, in a bear market, their growth stalls).

7.

Slow Growth: Companies that are running

4.

Speculative Growth: Companies where

8.

High Yield: Companies that have a policy to give out dividends (profits) to investors. However, companies that are able to give a lot of dividends to investors are not using profits for business expansion, so be cautious. Trading in these companies might suit investors who like to hold stocks for the long run.

operation problems (high debt, negative earning, etc.), but also have potential to turnaround in the future (with better management). This type of stock is prone to very high risk, but high returns as well.

future profits are assumed to grow. Investors buy this type of stock for speculative capital gain over a short period of time (with a high chance of incurring loss).

Go through the STOCK EXCHANGE OF THAILAND (SET) website to get to know some of the companies listed on the stock market. You may be familiar with some companies in your daily lives. When you’re ready to start investing, contact a brokerage firm to assist you at the beginning of your investment journey. It is even better if you can get a broker who you know well because he or she can become your personal financial consultant. www.set.or.th 22

DR. KARNDEE LEOPAIROTE ENGINEERING THE

‘SUPPLY CHAIN OF SUCCESS’

It was in 1997 when the collapse of the Thai baht triggered the Asian Financial Crisis. It was also in this year that the young Dr. Karndee Leopairote was pursuing further studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Cash-strapped, her scholarship from a leading Thai firm was terminated. Unrelentingly, however, she was able to support her way through a Master and a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering through scholarships and earnings she received by being a Teaching Assistant at the University. It was through this experience that she realized she needed to give back.

24

I like doing things that I’ve never done before. This is because it’s better to make mistakes than missing opportunities.

ON BEING A PROFESSOR “It would be very selfish of me if I am this blessed and still choose not to help out,” says Dr. Karndee who is now Assistant Professor of Operations Management at the Thammasat Business School. Motivated by her desire to contribute, she began her teaching career at the Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology, where she initially received her bachelor degree. This, however, was not her first experience. At University of Wisconsin-Madison, she was Teaching Assistant, later taught Master degree students and received the best teaching award while she was studying. “I never thought I’d be a professor before”, laughs Dr. Karndee. “I was a pain to the teachers. But I studied hard. When I received the opportunity to teach, I discovered I really enjoyed it.” Dr. Karndee came back to teach at the SIIT at a crucial time, when Thailand was hit hard by the financial crisis. Her salary was low, but “it was a very easy decision to make,” says Dr. Karndee, who says she wanted to give help when it was most needed. “THE SUPPLY CHAIN OF EDUCATION” Known fondly to her students as “Ajarn Aor”, Dr. Karndee says her passion is in human resource development. Having received a Ph.D., “I am now at the end of the supply chain of education, so it’s my time to give back”. Teaching both freshmen and senior students, Dr. Karndee says that the transformation she sees is “incredible”. This is both a cause

for concern and happiness at the same time. “It’s shocking that some students in their freshman year can’t still do basic maths, but it’s a joy to see them being able to discuss complex issues in a more theoretical and analytical way during their senior year.” “My long-term goal is to teach kids that don’t have the opportunity to get into good schools,” she says. “It’s a well-known fact that if you invest early in education, you get better results”. ON HARD WORK Aside from her role in the academe, Dr. Karndee wasalso co-host of the TV show, Kao KonKon Kao, where she offered business analysis. “It was a bit of madness that I decided to accept the job,” laughs Dr. Karndee. “I did not have a background in Mass Media Communications,” she added, “so what the co-hosts would take to say in one sentence, I would take five.” To prepare herself for each show, Dr. Karndee says it takes a lot of hard work. “I would have to read for hours every night to get myself ready for one show. It’s not easy, but I’m not afraid to getting tired.” But the toughest shoe she had to fill would probably be the daily evening economic overview she has to give on F.M. 96.5. For 10 mins every 6.30 p.m., Dr. Karndee gives a comprehensive brief on the state of the Thai economy. “People think this is really simple, but I have to take an hour or so to prepare to speak for just 10 minutes—often while I’m driving”.

25

TAKING UP THE CHALLENGE Dr. Karndee is also the Director of the Future Innovative Thailand Institute (FIT), an independent policy think tank that seeks to layout a development roadmap for Thailand. At the institute, she works closely with Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, former ASEAN Secretary General. “What I like about this is that I get to work on areas that I’m not familiar with, such as social welfare reforms.” But Dr. Karndee doesn’t shy away from unchartered territories. “I like doing things that I’ve never done before. This is because I think it’s better to make mistakes than missing opportunities,” she explains. “If there are skills you do not yet have, you can practice for it.” Speaking on why she decided to join FIT, “I think Thailand is at the cross-roads, and there is great potential for reform”. When asked whether she would ever pursue a career as a politician, she responded, “I like to contribute, but it is not the environment that I like. I prefer being out here in think tanks”. LIVING A BALANCED LIFE Busy as she is, Dr. Karndee may appear to be struggling from the challenge known to every working woman. But she is firm in saying that it’s all about priority. “I lived in a male-dominated workplace that didn’t understand why a woman had to leave early to pick up the kids. Being a mother is a full time job, so I now tell them up front that that’s my first priority, and that work is just a part of my many responsibilities”. In the end, she says “if I miss a day of work, someone can replace me, but no one can replace me if I miss out on my children.” Dr. Karndee says the support she receives from her husband and kids is “invaluable”. “My husband understands that I’m busy,” she says, “but he’s very supportive”. She also sees to it that she doesn’t compromise on her health. “Leading a healthy lifestyle takes very little ,” she says, “you just need to make sure that you have enough sleep and eat three meals a day.” ON YOUNG PEOPLE Speaking on the younger generations, Dr. Karndee says what is lacking is a genuine drive and dedication to excellence. “Maybe because things come easier these days due to things like the internet, young people are fine with just ‘good enough’ and don’t strive for excellence,” she explains. The problem, Dr. Karndee says, is that the media overemphasizes the success of successful people, without showing the struggles they had to overcome. 26

“We need to develop greater creative intelligence,” she says, talking about what younger generations need today. “Most business startups,” she adds, “fail because they do know their business well enough and aren’t able to adapt.” “Startup entrepreneurs need to follow their passion with a reality check,” she advises. Having said this, Dr. Karndee says that it’s important to get smart young people into business startups. “This is where the innovations happen,” she says. “Young people today feel it’s prestigious to work for big corporations, but it’s a waste of talent because most decisions are made by the corporation and not the employee”. It may be because of this belief that she is unwilling to let her standards down. “People ask me, ‘Why do I have to care so much’? and I tell them, ‘How can I not? I’m an important actor in the supply chain of success.” ON THE FUTURE Working both as professor and in a policy think tank, Dr. Karndee lives a large part of her life in the future. “I wish to see a Thailand where people know their roles,” she adds. “Our current problems stem from the fact that people do not know their roles in society and only resort to blaming others.” “Corruption on all levels is also a big problem,” she says, recounting a story of a girl who her parent asked to help her get past the entrance examination. “The girl had a 3.8 GPA from a top public school, and yet her parent wasn’t confident enough not to ask for special favors,” she says. “This is very worrying because it means young people will grow up thinking that corruption guarantees success,” she adds. “Everyone should be ready to say no to corruption”.อ Dr. Karndee draws her inspiration from Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, whom she says is the personification of integrity. She says that working with him has allowed her to even more admire his tenure as the ASEAN Secretary General. “He conducts himself and makes decisions based on grounded principles, and doesn’t yield to personal interests,” she says. Dr. Karndee may be many things: a professor, a public intellectual, a mother, and a wife. But whatever role she may play, this tenacious woman is always ready to take up the challenge, give it all her best, and never lose sight of her principles.

The problem is that the media overemphasizes the success of successful people, without showing the struggles they had to overcome. Startup entrepreneurs need to follow their passion with a reality check.

Battles cause loss. Better to be friends.

A

SUB. LT. TUTCHAI SIRISUMPAN

CHIEFTAIN OF TWO

28

Taking the highest posts, in 2 entirely separa te jobs, isn’t an easy task, yet some people surprise everyone by excelling when carrying out a myriad of duties. An example of one of those rare talents is Sub. Lt. Tutchai Sirisumpan or widely known as Khun Eddie, the Vice President of Airports of Thailand PLC’s Regional Airports Administration Department, and the founder and owner of Triple T Networks Company Limited, a successful distributor of copyrighted global TV channels supplying cable TV companies nationwide. Leading both his teams to greater heights, Eddie gives the credit to negotiation skills, an eye for business opportunities, wise marketing schemes, and leadership principles and traits he has gathered along his career path. “Business is a battle but sometimes yo u h a ve to co m p ro m i s e , ” s a y s Eddie, asserting that negotiation and compromise not only avoids loss, but actually brings benefits to both parties. When he was a Commercial Sales Director at UBC, Thailand’s biggest pay TV business in the 90s (now known as True Visions), he introduced a scheme to offer local cable TV companies that were then illegally taking UBC’s broadcasting signals special incentives to subscribe as its own clients, and his implementation recouped millions in revenue. “Battles cause loss. Better to be friends,” he observed. His shrewdness as a regularly mediator is complemented by his ability to successfully turn a crisis into a business opportunity. In 2003, UBC ended the local cable TV company membership to recreate its monopoly position. The boards’ decision meant his initiative was about to come to an end. However instead of viewing this as a failure, he quit his employment career and founded Triple T Networks, a company that now supplies 12 international TV channels directly to local cable TV companies nationwide. Eddie calculates his marketing strategies carefully, and makes sure all of them are wise and show initiative. As soon as he assumed the role of VP of Regional Airports Administration at Airports of Thailand Plc., he has also implemented an offensive marketing strategy so as to compete with the rising competition among Thailand’s neighboring countries’ airports.

Apart from promoting these airport’s facilities, safety, best service, and security, he incorporated the promotion of travel attractions and foreign investment opportunities in each airport’s respective province. These offensive strategies now include an effort to communicate more with general public. A set of AOT stickers, available on the popular LINE smartphone app (now available for download), are not only cute, but also strengthen the organization’s image as modernist. Eddie’s shrewd marketing mind is not the only thing that has led him this far. His leadership charisma lends much to his success. He’s a good boss, and apart from assigning tasks to the right men, or weighing their caliber before assigning jobs, Eddie always listens to his subordinates. “I think of my subordinates as my equals,” he admits. “The fact that they are lower in position doesn’t mean they are always less bright, or have less practical experience. And you can’t lead people if you haven’t first earned their affection and respect.”

the engine. “The job might be trivial to some, but I owe a lot to it,” he confesses. “It taught me that in everything I do, I need to plan, make a time line, and complete the task. We are all given 24 hours a day. The key is to make the most out of them.” It is exciting to see what the next project initiatives will be for the 3 regional airports ( Chaingmai, Chaingrai and Hadyai) he oversees, and what subscribers to Triple T Networks can expect to see in the months and years ahead. Led by an excellent, respectable, and visionary chief, who has clocked plenty of mileage in marketing management, the staff at both his companies can rest assured they’ll be steered towards bright future.

Finally, if there’s one thing this man values above all else, it’s time. When recalling his experiences as an MBA student in the Los Angeles, he reflects that although it was a tough period, it taught him one guiding principle he now applies to everyday life: time management. As a FedEx boy – the full time job he took on to pay off his university debts – he soon realized that the faster he delivered packages, the more tips and compliments he got from clients and his boss, so he realized he always had to plan the best route, even before starting

Entrepreneur with a

Humble Attitude

A ttaphol Anurutdhikorn Frequently seen (in earlier times) on TV soap operas and numerous commercials, Attaphol (M) Anurutdhikorn, now 35, decided to turn his back on the entertainment industry and pursue his dream career as a businessman. He’s now the managing director of Sira-Sila Property Co. Ltd, his flagship business property development company, and is also managing a few different types of business he started and/or inherited from his family. However he still considers himself a low-profile businessman, and adheres to the motto: ‘learn from experience, no matter if it is success or failure’.

30

How do you manage everything? As I have to manage from distance I’m on the phone most of the time, and I don’t do everything myself. The key is good partners, trustworthy people with similar mentalities and perspectives. It just can’t be a one man show. What is your work ethic philosophy? I have one rule: if I can’t manage the business myself – that is giving policies and directing it – then I won’t start that business. Then there’s fair business practice with no dirty short cuts. I wouldn’t feel at peace living on money earned by cheating. What do you do when things get too stressful at work? I go meditate at a temple. I actually do that a few times a year. When it’s quiet – no phones, no distractions – you get to stay with yourself, learn to ponder and think slower. And when you have a clear head that’s when ideas dawn on you.

How did you start your flagship business? After getting my master’s degree, I was assigned to manage my father’s resort in Khao Lak. After that, it has always been land speculation and property development for me. We have some land in Hua Hin – which is where we started Vana Varin Resort (a 20 bungalow accommodation for mid-range spenders), and soon there will be another Vana Varin Resort on our land in Chiang Khan, Loei.

I understand you have other businesses as well? We own several gas stations, and I have a boxing gym – which grew out of my work out frenzy – and I’ll soon be importing LED lamps. There is a huge LED lamp market share to seize in Thailand, plus our resorts will need them. The energy saving trend has started, and I think the LED lamps will be well received in Thailand’s architecture and construction industries.

What factors do you consider when buying land? The location! It has to be next to a road, or at least a short cut. It doesn’t have to sit in the center of a developed area, but it should be equipped with minimal infrastructure, with the chance that more infrastructures will be developed by private or government sectors in the future. Then there’s the cost. We don’t buy Grade A properties, only B and C, because we then develop them to increase their value. I also talk to my father. As a real estate lawyer and university professor, he’s a great person to consult.

Is there a risk to being so diversified? (laughs) I might be doing many businesses at the same time, but all of them support and relate to one another. And even if only one out of the ten becomes successful, I’d still be happy. Business is a risk and there can always be loss. I ran a football stadium before, and it was going well until there was a flood. We waited for months for the situation to get better but eventually had to sell it.

Why are you particularly interested in land speculation and property development? Because of low investment and low risk, the value asset only goes up, unless the lands are totally remote and without any chances for infrastructure development. You receive lots of benefits with the right speculation, and the value increases even more if you invest in construction on them. If I had deposited the same money in banks, the interest would only be coins.

What do you see yourself doing in the next 5 to 10 years? Try to make current businesses succeed by developing land and using existing property to its best advantage.

I always consider myself a toddler when it comes to business. With less ego I am more open minded, listen more, and open to other people’s ideas.

Holiday Cheer:

THE ART OF GIVING

There’s no better way to end the year than to feel the crisp winter-ish breeze in the mornings, to pack up and go on holiday with friends and family, or even to have a restful few days to yourself to reminiscent the old and plan for the new. The Christmas and New Years celebration have been rather loud and commercial these days, making many feel like “giving” to be extremely stressful and an uninspiring time with the usual display of gift sets and baskets so commonly found in shops with heavily decorated Christmas themes. Given how rarely people seem to take a step back to think about what other creative gifts they can be sharing with their love ones- may it be a parent, your siblings, your respectable boss, your hilarious work colleagues or your partner in crime. Maybe the art of giving needs to be rejuvenated as well! We have talked to various groups of people as well as scoured online for creative means in which could re-sparkle the excitement of giving—that in return, you will feel as great as the person receiving your gifts.

1. Giving Seeds.

Explain how to nurture them and suggest recipes once they have grown. They’ll be happy to send you photos of how it turns out regardless!

2. Bake Something. Either it’s your grandma’s signature recipe

or looking up for one online, consider you’ll learn something new and may improvise into a new recipe you’ll be proud of. Go the extra mile and learn how to make a Thai snack or dessert.

3. Hand-drawn Cards. Discover your artistic side. Take a

moment to sit down with a paintbrush, a crayon, or a thick black marker- you’ll realise how much more observative you become when you draw.

4. Sing a Song. Record it and upload it online. Not only will

you be sharing your talent (or no-talent) for singing, it will surely make the recipient smile and these days could possibly paveway to stardom.

5. Give a Book. Despite my love for the digital world, it’s great

once in a while to smell the paper where words are printed. Explain to the person why you got them this book. No cards necessary.

6. Give an Experience.

Gifts doesn’t necessarily have to be objects, it can be a relaxing massage at the spa, a photo trip to explore your city together, a delicious dinner at a restaurant you’ve never tried, or any fun activity you can do together.

7. Make a Traffic Survival Kit. An audio book, a pack of chewy

candies, fun shades, paper airplanes, and a travel size refreshing citrus lotion- it can surely help reduce stressful city traveling.

8. Print Out Photos.

Finally, after having about 2500++ photos in your smartphone. Pick ones that remind you of them. You can print them out as postcards, on canvas as an art piece, or paste them on the cover of a blank notebook.

Lastly. Wrap your gifts responsibly. Try magazines pages, old newspapers, music sheets, or reusable bags. Daring? go commando and give without wrappings- it really is the most environmentally friendly option!

WELCOME TO THE AGE OF

S TA R T U P S By Hubba

It is widely misunderstood that a “startup” is a type of business. Steve Blank, a Silicon Valley serial-entrepreneur and Stanford professor who launched the Lean Startup Movement, mentioned in his book, The Startup Owner’s Manual, that in sharp contrast to a normal company where customers, their problems, and necessary product features are all “knowns”, a startup is “search” mode, seeking a repeatable and profitable business model.

O

nce a startup has found this model, then it will become an actual business. Some startups may choose to copy a model from another successful startup based in one location and implement it in another location, or even use the same business model for another target group or product category, but this does little to increase their odd due. In truth, there is significant risk for anyone who is looking to begin something that will seek to solve a problem worth figuring out and of which they are extremely passionate about. And their market: a niche group of people for which the product features are simple enough so the average user will not find them an added burden. A startup’s odds of success are very low, according to Y Combinator, the most famous 36

and successful tech startup accelerator in the world. Their estimate suggests that a startling 93% of companies accepted eventually fail. So why, given the odds, would so many young people choose to become a startup founder? One simple fact is that our generation - the Gen Y and Millennials - are just people with an entrepreneurial mindset who are willing to do whatever it takes, no matter how difficult, to gain full control of our lives. Under the old ways of doing business, it would be almost impossible for people without personal capital or collateral to even get started. However, in technology startups, one can produce a working prototype that is ready to test the market within weeks or a few months on just one laptop, distribute their products worldwide at extraordinary speed and if successful, sell their companies or IPO at an extremely high valuation.

There is always a risk of failure, but because it is much cheaper to start technology companies, it becomes much easier to fail when experimenting with your ideas. To prove how amazing a startup can be, just look at Instagram, the world famous photo and video sharing social network that gained 100,000 users within its launch week, and 2 years later, sold for $1 billion with just 13 employees, all of whom netted more than $7 million each from the sale. Can you imagine starting a traditional business that can do that? So for all the young Thai men and women who aspire to become successful entrepreneurs, a much more exciting opportunity awaits you than the clichéd lifestyle businesses such as the coffee shop, bakery house and clothing store. Welcome to the Age of Startups!

LOSE AN INCH IN AN HOUR CAN YOU REALLY GET RID OF EXCESS FAT OVER A LUNCH BREAK? EVEN WITH A HEALTHY DIET AND REGULAR EXERCISE, ONCE WE GET PAST A CERTAIN AGE, WE ALL HAVE THAT ONE AREA OF FAT IN OUR BODY WE CAN’T SEEM TO GET RID OF! OR CAN WE?... What if someone told you that you could get rid of that excess fat and be a size smaller, in the time it takes to have your lunch break from work? No, it’s not liposuction, or taking pills, or anything invasive or extreme. It’s a new non-surgical body contouring treatment – coming to Bangkok next month – that claims to reduce an inch in an hour. CAN YOU EXPLAIN THIS NEW TECHNOLOGY? The process is called Liposonix, and basically it is an ultrasound thermal treatment that eliminates targeted fat in treated areas, such as the waistline, flanks, hips, thighs, and buttocks. This FDA approved revolutionary treatment is a safe, non-surgical, and non-invasive, way to help you go down an inch or so, in an area you may have already given up on. The process is amazingly able to destroy targeted fat below the skin, without harming the skin tissues. And this is exactly what so many patients are asking for. Currently the energy used by many of the fat reduction technologies is still highly absorbed, or scattered near the skin surface, limiting penetration into subcutaneous fat tissue. Other ultrasound body contouring technologies use low-intensity, low-frequency, or unfocused energy, calling for multiple treatments. The breakthrough with Liposonix is that it solves both these problem. This technology uses high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) energy to penetrate through the skin layers and into the targeted fat tissue without harming skin or surrounding tissues. It is able to permanently destroy targeted subcutaneous fat, and deliver uniform, predictable results after a single one-hour treatment. WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT FROM THE TREATMENT? You can expect to reduce an average of about an inch, or 2.8 cms, in the waistline or other commonly treated areas. This equals 1 dress, or pant, size, and you may begin to see results in 1 to 2 weeks (although it usually takes 3 to 6 months for the final results to be realized because this is the time the body takes to naturally remove body fat). This new technology is particularly beneficial for patients who have mild to moderate excess fat, are close to their ideal weight, and just need that extra inch taken out. Other options are likely to be more effective for patients who have more extensive areas of excess fat. WHAT DOES ONE EXPERIENCE DURING THE PROCEDURE? This system uses HIFU technology to specifically target unwanted fat. The heat liquefies the fat, which your body slowly absorbs over an 8-week period. The fat cells are then removed through the body’s natural healing process. The liver takes the fat and metabolizes it normally. This means there is no measurable redistribution of the fat. During treatment patients may experience discomfort, prickling, tingling or warmth. Since each person has a different pain tolerance, some may opt for medications for anxiety, or pain control, prior to the procedure. The good news is that the pain is intermittent, and only lasts for 45 seconds during the pulsed delivery of ultrasound. Each treated area normally requires 3 pulses, but it depends on the area needing to be treated. The larger the area is, the more pulses are required. ARE THERE ANY POST-TREATMENT SIDE EFFECTS? This is a no-downtime procedure for body fat reduction. Most of the healing happens unnoticed, and the patient requires no time off work. You can maintain normal activity immediately afterwards. After your treatment, your skin may be somewhat pink. Some patients have some swelling and bruising after Liposonix, but any redness usually resolves after a few hours. The swelling could last a few days. Compression garments help reduce the swelling and make the first day or two more comfortable. Sometimes mild bruising may occur, which will go away after a couple weeks, but could possibly last 2 to 3 weeks.

CO-WORKING SPACES IGNITE BANGKOK’S STARTUP SCENE By Simba Russeau

In Thailand, a new ecosystem is emerging. Without the connections, money or education, anyone looking to embrace the entrepreneurial path would have been encouraged to forgo such nonsense and settle for a traditional job.

D

espite a well-established entrepreneurial culture, with more than 20 percent of the adult population claiming the status of an entrepreneur, according research conducted in 2005 by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), this community was mainly comprised of brick-and-mortar type businesses rather than innovators in the digital space.

“Before, we were just running around Bangkok. This meant starting in the late afternoon because most of our time was spent searching for Internet, a place that wasn’t too cold, hoping that the MacDonald people won’t come and chase us away or spending lots of money on coffee at places like Starbucks where,” says Asavanant.

“If you’re a small cash-strapped team of individuals, then back in the day opening a small shop like a café, bakery or retail store was the only option,” says Charle Charoenphan co-Founder and managing director of Hubba Thailand.

“The cost and expenses of most co-working spaces are reasonable and knowledge is easily accessible. For example, there are IOS developers from various startups and countries so I can just go over and ask them if they have experience in a particular issue I’m looking to solve. Immediately I can get answers to problems that I may have spent three or four hours trying to figure out myself.”

As an emerging economy, Thailand is the second largest economy in Southeast Asia, after Indonesia. The Asian investment boom in the 80’s and 90’s led many multinational companies to locate their regional headquarters in the country’s capital - Bangkok. The cosmopolitan city has positioned itself as a regional hub for finance and business. Dubbed the Facebook capitial of the world, with more than 18 million social media users, Bangkok is also emerging as a regional force for technology. With more and more young Thai entrepreneurs and international digital nomads looking for inexpensive workspaces to develop and launch their new ideas, co-working spaces not only accommodate a growing demand but for individuals like Kavin Asavanant, co-Founder of Noonswoon, it offers an infrastructure for his team to focus on getting work done as well as collaborate with creative individuals from different sectors and disciplines. 38

That’s the ethos of Hubba Thailand and Launchpad, two pioneering co-working spaces tailored to meet the needs of the nomadic entrepreneur. “When you’re an entrepreneur starting a new business, there are always numerous pressures hitting you from different directions,” says Launchpad founder Vincent Sethiwan. “In Thailand, when you say you want to start something new or that’s out of the norm, people usually shun the idea in favour of a more traditional approach.” “I wanted to use the knowledge and experience that I have in consulting to help new entrepreneurs because I’ve been through the rigorous training of starting new businesses and I know it’s tough,” says Charoenphan. “There’s so many ways that you can fail. I want to help to reduce that.”

Hubba Thailand’s origins can be traced back to 2011 when floods forced Charoenphan and his family to relocate to Pattaya. Plagued with the dilemma of relying on the uncertainties of cafés, the inability to launch a new venture due to communication mishaps and declining motivation levels, led to a desire to create an ecosystem to ignite an entrepreneurial revolution. “During that time, it took my partner and I two years to launch a new business but if we had worked together every day then we could have had everything up and running in less than six months,” says Charoenphan. “Time, momentum and energy are essential for startups. You need a place to come together and bounce ideas.” Until recently, the word startup remained an unspoken concept in Thailand. The fact that both Charoenphan and Sethiwan were already involved in the startup scene has allowed them to develop a more sustainable infrastructure where a thriving community of innovators can unleash their creative energies in an environment that’s not only supportive but encourages individuals to be daring and take their businesses to the next level. “The only reason that Silicon Valley in the US was so successful is because they had access to an enormous wealth of various platforms. Their ecosystem was really strong. This didn’t exist in Thailand. In 2011, no one knew what was the meaning of a startup,” adds Charoenphan. “We needed to build a startup ecosystem for entrepreneurs to thrive in Thailand. This is Hubba’s mission: to foster the regional and global Thai startup scene by building a network of co-working spaces, events, mentors, funding, media and educational institutions for startups in Thailand.” “Rather than remaining stuck in the past, we need to embrace the future. This is the message that we want to send out to the Thai people: when you’re in the tech business you don’t have to compete in the local market due to the immense power of the Internet and skyrocketing mobile penetration rates, which allow any startup to release an app into the global market,” adds Sethiwan. “Thailand has the talent and there’s so much space in the world for Thai innovators to tackle.” Hosting tech-based meetups that are free of charge for visitors and organisers alike has been Launchpad’s secret sauce to success. “Entering a new market made the first three months difficult.

Traditional products like air conditioning or selling potato chips already have a clearly defined consumer base and marketing channels. But co-working spaces represented a new economy. This meant that we had to figure out who are our customers, where they hang out and how to reach them through various marketing channels,” says Sethiwan. “Basically, we had to think outside the box. Incorporating events and parties into our marketing plan so that people could experience the space is what allowed our clientele base to expand into a community of more than ten new businesses.” Our world has become too intertwined, interconnected and interdependent. Gone are the days of dominating a market, which epitomises the 20th-century business tactics prominently taught in business schools and training programmes globally as the path to success. In many ways, co-working spaces represent a new economic model based on the idea of the collaborative economy where socially conscious businesses are able to profit, serve their consumer base and maintain sustainable growth by heavily relying on cooperation and partnerships. Acting as an international hub where Thai and foreigners alike have the opportunity to connect, develop networks and embrace skill sharing; both Launchpad and Hubba Thailand represent the way of the future - a free-market environment. “You can’t innovate, grow or capture a new market if your back isn’t always against the wall. You feel at home when other individuals who are also struggling to launch their ideas into the world surround you,” says Sethiwan. “We share the same pain. Having that kind of community provides comfort when you’re trying to make it as an entrepreneur.” “We sometimes share designers or programmers with other startups, which is unheard of in the traditional corporate environment,” adds Charoenphan. “There are no secrets in co-working spaces. Companies are not looking to dominate one another. Those boundaries don’t exist. We operate on a level of transparency, which attracts partners, strengthens a company’s network and ultimately leads everyone towards success.”

SOCIAL ENTERPRISE STARTUP: INVESTING IN WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP

Words by Wedu Photos by Satta Ektrakul

Society seems to make great strides when it comes to sating our modern appetite for smart phones or new lines of clothing. And yet when it comes to solving our most fundamental problems, such as ensuring equal access to leadership for women or access to education for girls, we seem to run short on solutions. What are we not getting right?

T

he emergence of social enterprises as of late promises to solve this puzzle. At the core, SEs are businesses that are founded to deliver services that solve a social problem. Using the energy of the market, their goal is to maximize social impact while achieving financial sustainability. If done right, we open a world of possibilities where social problems can be solved sustainably. In an age where young people aspire to start their own businesses early on, social enterprises have become an option for those who want to make social impact. While SEs compete for talent in the same market as any other startup, they offer a unique personal fulfillment that no other stock option can rival. Take women leadership as an example. Over a year ago, we met a girl named Phearong, a Cambodian aspiring university student, who was very shy. She applied for a mentorship program at Wedu, accepted to be a Wedu Rising Star and was matched with a mentor who guided her through her personal and professional development. A year later, she found the courage to stand up in a student council election where she won against 7 other candidates, all male. In her own words, “It’s just an injustice that only males should be candidates to an election”. To have helped a girl take up such a challenge in a country where men occupy almost all leadership positions is an incredible experience. Investing in women’s leadership and education is good foreverybody. For one, research shows that women tend to reinvest 90% of their earnings into the health, education, and well-being of their family, compared with 40-60% for men. This means that it’s more likely that more kids will be in school if women are empowered. More than this, women have also shown to be better than men at repaying their debt obligations. This means that they are more likely to return the funds received to Wedu, so we can re-invest them in the next generation of leaders. Despite these benefits, females in South East Asia still

About the author

play a small leadership in their communities. In Myanmar, women comprise less than 5% of those in parliament. As a social enterprise, the crucial question then is “How do we create the most impact while doing it most sustainably?” Like any other business, SE startups depend on meaningful innovations to succeed. More often than not, these are business model innovations rather than technological ones. At Wedu for instance, we combine an innovative leadership development program for women with a revolutionary investment model to create a truly sustainable way to develop women leadership. This starts with designing the first ever life-long mentorship program for emerging women leaders. Through this program, interested professionals receive the opportunity to mentor a young female leader through her personal and professional development. Moreover, Wedu is also trailblazing a venture capitalist approach to investing in women education.Wedu invests in leaders like a Venture Capitalist would invest in startups: by providing both capital and non-financial support (mentorship), making it profitable and self-sustaining in the long run. In the end, it is through these innovations that Wedu is able to empower women and girls like Phearong to reach their full potential. At the moment, Wedu is investingin 25 girls through the leadership development program, and is expecting over 6,000 by 2022. In this way, it is possible to sustainably empower generations of young women to take greater leadership roles in their communities. This is the power of social enterprises. And as long as they continue to be energized by passion and innovation, the solutions to our most fundamental problems will make not fall so short after all.

Wedu is an awarded social enterprise providing leadership development opportunities for female leaders in South East Asia through mentorship and financial options to complete university. It is the winner of the Global Social Venture Competition 2013, and the recipient of the Social Enterprise Startup of the Year 2012 Award at Cambridge University. Bangkok World Film Festival 2013 Film Reviews

SF Cinema, CentralWorld November 15-24, 2013

When the 11th annual Bangkok World Film Festival took over the SF Cinemas at CentralWorld this past November, art-house movie lovers were treated to over 60 different films, from a variety of countries, spanning Europe, Asia, Australia, and even South America. This year’s line up was definitely an eclectic mix, and although not all of the 8 films I managed to see were stellar, just taking the chance on a movie you know nothing about is half the fun of attending festivals like these.

Tabu

The festival’s opening night film The Rocket was by far one of the strongest entries in the programme. Set in Laos, it’s an engrossing family drama, with plenty of light-hearted moments to offset the poignant tale of a motherless boy who tries to prove his worth to his grieving father and hyper-critical granny. Other festival highlights: Apolitical Romance (Taiwan) – Witty and whimsical, this modern, off-kilter romance gets underway with a chance meeting between a shy Taiwanese copywriter and a rebellious and free-spirited girl from the Chinese mainland who has come to Taiwan to seek out her dead grandmother’s long lost childhood sweetheart.

A Month in Thailand A Place On Earth The Rocket

Tabu (Portugal) - This beautifully shot black and white film, set in Portugal’s African colonies – circa 1965, recounts the tale of an ill-fated romance between a married woman and her roguish musician neighbour. A Month in Thailand (Romania) – Despite its title, this film has nothing really to do with Thailand. Instead it’s a well-acted and engaging character study revolving around a young man in the city, and his rocky love life.

Apolitical Romance 44

A Place on Earth (France) – A cynical photographer becomes obsessed with his beautiful young neighbour after he inadvertently witnesses her trying to commit suicide – while he was secretly photographing her.

A NEW ERA FOR THE THAI NATIONAL TREASURE words by Bruce Scott and Sakolrit Chanphum

Muay Thai is an ancient form of Thai kickboxing that dates back over 300 years and is a Thai national treasure which acquires a famed reputation around the world. Globally, there are an estimated 5,000 training camps. However some people still believe that Muay Thai is a violent sport just about high kicks and fast punches. So, a new idea to change that mindset and showcase the cultural importance of the sport is about to become reality. The Muay Thai Live stage performance is coming out! Muay Thai Live will open on January 15, 2014 at a specially built 600-seat theatre in Bangkok’s fabulous Asiatique riverfront complex which is located on Charoen Krung road, the oldest western style road in Thailand, which runs roughly parallel to the Chao Phraya river. “People know about Muay Thai,” says Ms Ponsiri Manohan, Deputy Chairman of NCC Management and Development Co. Ltd, and one of the team spearheading the promotional campaigns. “Some tourists know where to go to see boxing matches, but these places are often out of the normal areas where tourists locate. Our new position is perfect, a zone where the oldest western road, dated back to 1864, the holy river, and Muay Thai art meet.”

46

Ms Ponsiri Manohan

The show traces Muay Thai back to its origins, and presents epic battles featuring many of the mythical heroes associated with this ancient martial art. Also woven into the narrative is a love story, as well as a modern day depiction of the Muay Thai boxer as an action hero, and the dazzling array of stunts and special effects will no doubt have audiences on the edge of their seats. However, it’s bound to be the beautifully choreographed fight scenes and skillful swordplay that will have the watching crowd gasping for breath. “We want to give our philosophy of work to audiences with this exhilarating and original live stage performance,” commented Ms Wiwan (Pom) Kannasoot, Managing Director at Thai Chairoen Commercial, one of the organizers behind the show, when asked about how the project got started. “We were very fortunate to get the best team – investors and management – and moreover we got the best creative people as well. We have an excellent team of researchers, so we have very detailed information about the origins of Muay Thai, and we include that as the first episode of this spectacular show.” Staging a long-run theatrical event such as this takes huge creative input, and so the role of director was wisely put into the hands of Ekachai Uekrongtham, director of the film Beautiful Boxer (2003) and the hit stage show Boxing Boys, both of which feature Thai kickboxing prominently.

Ms Viwan Kannasoot

Though the director and producers are aiming this theatrical extravaganza at both Thai and tourist audiences alike, some people unfamiliar with this form of martial art may be put off at the thought of watching people fighting for 70+ minutes. However, Ekachai is adamant that the show is not about glorifying violence. It also incorporates lots of stunts, as well as free-running and “tricking” (acrobatic movements and twirls), plus there’s some brief audience participation thrown in for fun. In the end the show is primarily about the intricacy of the movement, but it’s also very much about the development of the show’s characters. “The Muay Thai Live stage performance is the most stunning show ever; the audience will feel a part of a show and remember how beautiful the moves are,” Ekachai concluded Working creatively behind the scenes is one thing, but filling the seats is just as important, so Bangkok residents and visitors (an expected 28 million tourists are expected to pass through Thailand in 2014), can expect a media blitz of advertising coming soon. “Our goal is to make Muay Thai Live becomes a cultural landmark in Bangkok, and also one of the attractions that TAT would like to promote,”

Mr Ekachai Uekrongtham

Ms Ponsiri Manohan adds. “We are targeting 70% tourist, and 30% domestic (Thai), and I feel certain that for the Thai people, when they come out of the show, they will feel proud.” Muay Thai Live: The Legend Lives The Stage @ Asiatique, The Riverfront Opens to the public January 15, 2014 Daily shows: 8pm Tickets: 1,500 THB premium seating 1,250 THB regular seating For tickets visit: www.thaiticketmajor.com/muaythailive www.muaythailive.net

THE HOURGLASS RESTAURANT AT AETAS

Every now and then, we all long for a fancier setting in which to have a decent meal. That’s why there’s just a je ne sais quoi to the idea of enjoying a fine casual meal at an upper-class restaurant. And the AETAS hotel in Lumphini is home to such a place. If you’re looking for a business dinner, an easy recommendation is the Hourglass Restaurant at the AETAS hotel. The restaurant brings together your standard hotel buffet table with a freshly cooked À la carte main course and has a rather nice ambience to it (helped in no small part by the chic design). For those looking for the perfect eatery to impress coworkers or clients, this is the place to be. A diversity of tastes is serviced by the ‘a la minute menu’, a selection from eight main courses, with choices including beef, salmon, river prawn, lamb and more. If you’re like me and don’t like eating hotel buffets that have been mass-produced, this is perfect, as it comes together with the standard salad bar (with soups, salads, and sweets). The presentation of the dishes is beautiful and as is clear when considering the appearance of the restaurant, much emphasis is placed on aesthetics.

HERITAGE BAKERY CAFE

Sometimes the large, trendy franchises are just not what we look for. Sometimes, we want a quiet little place that offers great service and an even better selection of items to placate our culinary desires. If you happen to be looking for that very place, try the Heritage Bakery Café. Despite its unassuming appearance and relaxed atmosphere, this French bakery/bistro/café has much to offer to the discerning diner. As a subcontractor of Délifrance, Heritage, in addition to an impressive variety of meats, jams and even (not edible but still interesting) chocolate fountains, should offer a genuinely impressive display of baked goods. And they do just that, presenting such items all day long, a process made possible by their intentional preparation of limited amounts of goods during each part of the day, ensuring a minimum of waste and a maximum of warm meals straight from their ovens to your bellies. The scent of French baked goods alone should be enough to leave you in the mood for some French bread.

50

And while there is an emphasis on baked goods and sandwiches, the menu also offers a host of other dishes, ranging from Asian fusion cuisine to imported dishes like escargot in cheese. The list of items is not limited only to French and Asian dishes, and the Spaghetti Bolognese features one of the meatier sauces of its kind in Bangkok (and considering the wateriness of most such “meat” sauces I’ve had in the country, that is definitely a good thing). To make things more interesting, certain sets on the menu are rotated on a weekly basis, meaning that frequent customers won’t find themselves overly familiar with what’s available. Furthermore, if you want something to wash your meal down, know that the beverages available include basics like coffee, tea, and soda alongside more exotic tipples such as aperitifs, sparkling wine, and champagne (if you’re feeling classy, try one of those fine wines with the Cheese Plate, which puts together a collection of cheese slices that would otherwise cost you a pretty penny at the market). Globetrotting in Style

Gyeonghoeru in Gyeongbok Palace

Fortunately the language barrier in South Korea is not a problem anymore for independent travelers. English signs are everywhere, so at least I didn’t get lost finding the Airport Rail Link out of Incheon International Airport. It took me less than an hour to reach the Seoul City Center, and then just a few minutes by taxi before I got to my hotel.

Cheongyecheon 52

Now if you’re thinking that Seoul is just an average city, and you’re wondering what there would really be to do there, let me tell you I would describe Seoul as one of the most artistic cities in the world! The city’s modernization and fast-paced growth over the last century manages to blend in seamlessly with the city’s rich traditional culture. I felt as if I were walking in a massive modern art museum – not just because of the beauty of the familiar sightseer landmarks, but also due to the very look of the city itself. You can be amazed and stunned at almost every street corner. A few photographs can hardly do it justice (though I tried), because Seoul is a city that must be seen in person.

I made a point of starting each day at Cheongyecheon, a recently completed 8.4 km long, modern public recreation space built on the site of a stream. The story of this urban renewal project is a good example of “thinking outside the box”. Years ago it was just a polluted stream that was covered by the highway, but the local government made a huge effort to turn it into an ecological canal, though surprisingly the idea encountered resistance from many people. However the 3-year effort was well worth the while, as this public space has now become a famous attraction in the city. Personally I enjoyed taking walks here – enjoying the scenery and sipping a cup of coffee – but it’s also used for special events, such as small concerts or art shows, and often a place for people to meet, talk, and relax. At night the walking street that runs parallel to Cheongyecheon has a number of pubs, bars and restaurants, all doing brisk business. At the traditional Korean restaurants you can try “Galbi” (Korean BBQ), as well as many other authentic Korean dishes, particularly

SEOUL

Sightseeing in the South Korean Capital Winter is always a great time for travelling, and so last winter I began contemplating a trip as a little self-reward after so much hard work the previous year. But in the wintery peak season it’s good to have a plan – an actual flight ticket, a place to stay, and so on – but sometimes things turn out a little differently than we anticipate. Such was the case on my trip to Seoul last winter. I was originally going to go somewhere else, but things fell through at the last minute. So late on a Sunday night I was forced to magically make up my mind about a new trip, and the South Korean capital came to mind. Suddenly, within 24 hours, I was standing in front of the check-in counter at Suvarnabhumi Airport, preparing to board the 6-hour flight.

the numerous post-drinking foods. During my last trip my Korean friend brought me (after several rounds of drinks) to a place serving grilled lamb – just the late night snack we needed. Of course, newcomers to Seoul will want to know about the most visited tourist attractions, and of those attractions Gyeongbok Palace is not to be missed. The palace, also known as Gyeongbokgung, was the main royal residence of the Joseon Dynasty for over 500 years. Two main recommended spots here are Geunjeongjeo, the main hall which was used for official ceremonies, and Gyeonghoeru, the pavilion with a scenic pond in front, that ices over during the winter. Another sight to witness here is the changing of the guard, which takes place at the main gate. The soldiers all wear traditional uniforms, and put on an exceedingly elaborate display. Another tourist highlight nearby is the National Folk Museum of Korea, located at the rear of the palace, which contains portraits of the traditional Korean culture, and ways of life in olden times. A different royal residence, also well worth visiting, is the Changdeok Palace, or Changdeokgung, which was built as the secondary royal palace during the Joseon Dynasty (most royal family members

Bukchon Hanok Village

actually resided here during 20th century). Personally I had a preference for this palace, mainly because of the landscaping, and the fact that the building is situated on mountain slopes, covered with beautiful greenery and gardens. The main highlight here is the so-called Secret Garden, which perfectly portrays how royal family members enjoyed their time in the days of old. 53

Korean traditional Clothes

After visiting the palaces, don’t forget to visit the Bukchon Hanok Village, which is packed with 900 Korean traditional houses – homes of noblemen during the Joseon Dynasty. Situated on a hill, this spot is also a perfect place to view the panoramic scenery of Seoul. For a contrast to this bird’s-eye view, I also walked down the hill, and strolled along Samcheong Street, which has contemporary restaurants, wine bars, designer shops and art galleries. I was fortunate enough to randomly pop into one dessert shop serving sweet potato cake and potato latte. Delicious! Pedestrians can spend lots of time strolling the many streets of this city, and Insadong Street is one of the most popular. While walking along this busy thoroughfare one day – looking for some hot drinks to warm me up – I ventured into a random teashop. Tea is a popular item all over South Korea, and Osulloc is a very well known tea brand from Jeju Island. So when I stepped into this particular shop, the aroma of this brand of green tea was so overwhelming and wonderful, I immediately bought some tea to bring home with me. Once you’ve finished touring the fascinating streets in and around Insadong, I suggest visiting the Jongmyo Royal Shrine. Here memorial tablets for the Kings and Queens of the Joseon Dynasty are kept, and the shrine itself has been listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.

Visitors looking to find an area that is more hip and happening should seek out the infamous Itaewon area, where the fun starts after the sun sets. It’s a very cosmopolitan area, where many nationalities – Indian, African, Middle Eastern – both live and work. There are a number of clubs along the streets here, and they cater to people from all walks of life. Glam Bar is my personal favourite, though the price range might be a bit premium for some, and Between is a newly open nightspot that offers outdoor seating. If you want to be exposed to youth and indie culture, Hongdae Street might be a good evening option, as it is near to Hongik University, which is famous for its College of Fine Arts. You can also enjoy shopping, entertainment, performances and nightlife here, so get set for a lively evening out.

variety of Korean and Western bistro restaurants can be found here, and if you like people watching, or catching up on the most up-to-date Korean fashion, include this place on your trip itinerary. Just remember Sinsa Station, Exit 8, and you will find it. Last but not least, Namdaemun and Dongdaemun markets are must-see places for shopaholics. But if you want to avoid the massive crowds, and you just want to buy some Korean noodles, banana milk, or Korean soju to bring back home, the street supermarkets have all those sorts of foodstuffs. Worstcase scenario, I recently discovered that the departure hall at Incheon Airport has the nicely packed Korean noodles, selling for exactly the same price as in town.

Of course, if you want to escape from Myeong-Dong, a fun but perhaps too well known nighttime hangout area, try heading to Garosu-Gil, which is well south from the city center. It is the most happening spot nowadays for young people, as well as middle to high-class people, to hang out. A

There’s much more to Seoul than I can list here, and I’m sure anyone traveling here will discover something different and unique along his or her own journey. So just prepare for spontaneity, but remember that it is bloody cold in Seoul during the winter, so pack your bags well.

Aliza Napartivaumnuay: “I AM ONLY ONE”

It’s not surprising that social work is an unattractive employment option. Some, however, tread the rocky road of altruistic dedication, while many follow their financial compass. But what if there is a possibility in making a living while making a difference too? Aliza “Alice” Napartivaumnuay is doing just that. Alice was driven to create a “tool that allowed people to do good”. All of this was part of what she calls, “Citizen Social Responsibility”, where not only corporations can create change but that normal citizens can also become active agents themselves.

The Ecosystem of Giving

Holder of a Master’s degree in Supply Engineering and Logistics from the University of Warwick, Alice now works for an international retail company in network development, distribution, and logistics. But as co-founder of MYSOCIALMOTION, an ambitious social enterprise startup with a mission to create a “social network of do-gooders”, she wants to kick-start the “multiplier effect of social change”.

‘Demand’ for Change

“I had a very inspiring teacher who taught us about the impact of our actions on our environment,” she recalls. It was then that she realized change could happen starting with awareness. When she decided to pursue her studies in Supply Engineering, she had set out her mission to create a greener supply chain. “It is all demanddriven,” she says. “Consumers need to be conscious that a green product helps the environment- the very same one that we are living in” Alice refused to believe that she was alone in this battle for change. “Then it came to me,” she says with a spark of excitement. “There is that demand- people want to do good; but they tend to feel smaller than they actually are.” This was when MYSOCIALMOTION was born. Together with Arch Wongchindawest, 58

SocialGiver, the latest project launched by MYSOCIALMOTION, is an innovative platform that crowd sources funds for social project through “idle capacity”. Businesses donate their services which would have otherwise been unused (such as empty tables at a restaurant, tickets to events, or vacant rooms in a hotel) to be turned into funding for social projects. In other words, people who support social projects would get “rewards” from being in what Alice calls the “ecosystem of giving”. This combination may just be what gives social enterprise the extra topping. A social enterprise, Alice says, “has to be sustainable while delivering social impact.”

Overcoming Challenges

Working on network development projects for her day job, Alice focuses on helping companies become more efficient by designing integrated distribution

solutions. And yet, she admits treading both the corporate and social enterprise worlds has not been easy. “Sometimes problems come at you like an avalanche,” she says, “but you need to dare to ask for help.” Solving problems is something Alice is all too familiar with. “Difficulties become a problem only when one fails to see the opportunities within them,” she says. In the end, she explains, “you’re there to create as many equally winning solutions as possible- whether it is through business terms or for social impacts.

Living on the Balance

Alice says that she enjoys cooking, traveling, and urban sketching to relax from her packed schedule. “There are no regrets,” she explains, “if you give everything your best”. As the interview proceeded to its end, Alice, now 30, makes her final note with a quote she has taken to heart from Edward Everette Hale that reads, “I am only one, but I am still one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do”. In her case, Alice is a living testament that sometimes being “only one”, and “doing something that I can do” does go a long way.
