CELL RENEWAL YOU ARE WHAT YOUR CELLS ARE
“Man, like other organisms, is so perfectly coordinated that he may easily forget, whether awake or asleep, that he is a colony of cells in action, and that it is the cells which achieve, through him, what he has the illusion of accomplishing himself.” -Albert ClaudeWe use our body all the time, everyday, each passing year. Naturally like everything else, over time our body gets old and begins to wear and tear. When the things we use day-to-day get old, we go shopping and purchase new ones. In fact often we don’t even wait for things to get old before we replace them. But when our body gets old… well, it just gets old and that’s that. Or is it? Can replace our body too? Well, maybe not replace it, but we sure can renew the cells that makes up our body. And if the cells are new, that’s almost like having a brand new body, isn’t it?
AT WHAT AGE DO THE CELLS BEGIN TO WEAR AND TEAR? Each person ages at a unique rate. Some systems begin aging as early as age 30, while others start to age much later in life. These changes appear slowly, and over a long period of time, and most people do not notice this loss, since you rarely need to use your organs to their fullest ability. However when an organ is worked harder than usual, that’s when you’ll notice its inability to function optimally. In years past the aging process commonly began at the age of 35-45, but nowadays because of our changing lifestyles, the ageing process is occurring earlier, with many people experiencing it soon after they hit 30. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS TO LOOK FOR, AND DO THESE DIFFER IN MEN AND WOMEN? The symptoms don’t necessarily differ between the sexes, but most women tend to pay extra attention to their appearance, so for women it’s easier to recognize the changes in the skin’s health. For instance, if in the past you had no skin problems, but suddenly your skin begins to feel dry, oily or more sensitive, then that could be a sign. Signals and signs may also come in the form of hair or nail damage, or you may even experience changes in your menstrual cycle. When these peculiar changes occur, you should visit a doctor for preventive remedies before matters get worse. Men, on the other hand, may notice a drop in sexual desire and thinking processes. They may even feel they can’t make quick decisions like they did in the past. For working professionals, noticing a deficiency in performance could be a sign of deterioration of brain cells. Basically, because cells make the entire body, any kind of aging signs are symptoms of cells degeneration. HOW CAN WE WORK ON MAINTAINING THE CELLS? The goal of cell therapy is the prevention, cure or mitigation of diseases or injuries, by repairing, replacing, or restoring damaged cells, tissues and organs. There are various choices of regenerative cell therapies depending on your condition. If you’re at an early preventive stage, we can just begin with the removal of toxins by Multi-Organ Detox. A simple choice for cell therapy is a total nutrition therapy. This can be done with lifestyle changes, diet improvement, or it can be taken as cell food supplements to stimulate your cells without any chemicals. For those who need a more intensive treatment, we can use homeopathic medications or vitamin infusions. Vitamin infusion is a method of feeding key vitamins, minerals, and other natural substances, directly into a patient’s bloodstream. When you bypass the digestive system, a much higher level of nutrition is delivered directly to your cells. These nutrients help the cells that are performing below par to achieve improved wellness. WHAT CAN BE DONE TO TREAT CELLS THAT HAVE ALREADY DETERIORATED?
HOW DOES RENEWING THE CELLS RENEW THE BODY? A healthy body constantly replaces and regenerates cells to maintain its proper and efficient functioning. The cells in the body automatically divide creating more healthy cells to replace those that have been damaged by wear and tear, or are old and dysfunctional. However with aging, all cells experience changes and become larger, and are in turn less able to divide and multiply, as the pigments and fatty substances inside the cells increase. Many cells lose their ability to function, or they begin to function abnormally. When the cells malfunction, the tissue changes and eventually your organs also change and lose their efficiency. Because of this, to put it simply, we often need to externally assist in creating a healthier environment for the cells, so that they can maintain their health and youth.

To repair damaged cells, we can use bio-energy stimulation or hormonal adjustments. To understand bio-energy, we must know that each cell needs to be able to pass on energy or electrical charges, to other cells, in order to renew and reproduce. Disruptions, blockages and clouding of energy quickly affects the renewal of cells. Bio-energy uses the channeling of energy waves to reduce bad energy, and stimulate the aura within the cells thus improving cell reproduction. Hormonal adjustments, by comparison, are quite commonly used to treat testosterone deficiency in men, and estrogen deficiency in women. However, it can be used for almost any of the body’s dysfunctions. The hormones in the body can be balanced with a personalized recommended lifestyle change, herbal remedies, or even hormone replacement therapies. These are all natural healing processes. For even more extreme cases, we can also use stem cells to improve well-being. Basically, cell therapy can used to treat almost anything, from just being lethargic, to life-threatening diseases. By creating an environment for the cells to renew, or by externally replacing the old cells, you’ll definitely feel better and healthier.w

C reative intelligence & the ‘Eureka’ moment in starting a business
In our modern era, which is overflowing with so many sources and kinds of information, just being able to “collect” all the facts doesn’t ensure anymore that your business will be the one standing at the top of the pyramid. The growth of the internet, and global access to so much data, means that your business competitors could surpass you at any moment. Now is the time for ‘Creative Intelligence’ (or CQ – Creative Quotient), which can help you reframe all narratives and eventually come up with many new ideas for business, both efficiently and effectively.
”Creative Intelligence is a way of amplifying our creative capacities,” explains Bruce Nussbaum, who is not only a professor at Parsons, The New School for Design, but also a former editor at BusinessWeek. In an interview with Core77. com, he went on to say, “It’s a series of five competencies that we can all learn to bolster our skill at generating originality that has value, often economic value. Individuals and business organizations can increase their Creative Intelligence by getting better at Knowledge Mining, Framing, Playing, Making and Pivoting, or Scaling.” The idea is that being creative is not only for artists and musicians. It’s also very important for start-ups, when dealing with large quantities of information, to connect the dots and then find the ‘Eureka’ moment when starting a business. One way to start is by immersing yourself in niche cultures in order to mine ideas and anticipate customers’ wants. Then try to understand how the population makes sense of their lives and environments, in order to reframe the narrative. To clarify, take a look at 2 simple examples where professor Nussbaum explains his idea through 2 acclaimed films that were released in 2012. In Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty, Maya, the lead character, is able to find Osama Bin Laden by looking for messengers who connect him to the world, instead of simply following the CIA’s idea which is to find bombers. On a similar note, Ben Affleck’s Academy Award-winning film Argo explores the 1979 Iran hostage crisis, and shows how the US first sent its military in to save hostages, but failed. They then “reframed” the idea, and succeeded when they sent in a rescue team posing as a film crew. These unconventional strategies were key to creative competence, and to making these government operatives winners in thier own fields. But creativity is also social, and CQ shows how you can have better opportunities when dealing with a small team who share common interests in the same business, are trustworthy, and have familiarity with each other. In short, if you can play and 16
socialize together, you’ll probably work better together. When you look at some of the innovative companies from the recent past, like Facebook and Google, you’ll see they have all been built by “buddies” or “groups of friends”. That is also where much their originality and playfulness stems from. To learn more about the subject, check out the book CREATIVE INTELLIGENCE: Harnessing the Power to Create, Connect and Inspire by Bruce Nussbaum www.creativeintelligencebook.com

IdeaUPDATE
One Red Paperclip to a House! in 2005), but with the idea from childhood game called ‘Bigger, Better’, and a red paperclip that was sitting on his desk, Kyle decided to create a website from which to trade this single paper clip, promising to visit, in person, anyone who wanted to trade (no matter where they were). Almost immediately, a pair of young women in Vancouver offered to trade him a fishshaped pen. And so the trading went, as the fish pen became a handmade doorknob, the doorknob a camp stove, the camp stove a 1000 watt generator, and so on.
I
f you want to own a house, a tiny little red paperclip might be all you need. At least, that was the case for Kyle Macdonald, a 26-year-old Canadian who transformed himself from a paperclip holder into a homeowner – in just 1 year – thanks to 14 auspicious “trades” he made via the internet. Kyle and his girlfriend were paying rent on a house in Montreal, Quebec, but Kyle wanted to own a house. He didn’t have a job at the time (this all happened back
By the time a beer keg was traded for a snowmobile, Kyle’s website started to attract more and more followers. He then traded the snowmobile for a 2-person trip to Yahk, a tiny village in British Columbia. The Yahk trip was traded for a cube van, the cube van was traded for a recording contract with Metalworks in Ontario, and that recording contract was traded with one year rent-free in Phoenix, Arizona. The next trade was for an afternoon ‘hang-
out’ session with rock’n’roll legend Alice Cooper, but Kyle traded that for a motorized KISS snow globe. Many people think it was a crazy idea, but, luckily for Kyle, Hollywood director Corbin Bernsen is a big snow globe collector and he was willing to trade a role in his upcoming film Donna on Demand for the kitschy trinket. Then, on his final trade, the tiny town of Kipling, Saskatchewan, offered Kyle a 2-story farmhouse for the role in the movie. In the end Kyle and his girlfriend did move to Kipling, and did live in the house for a few years, but he eventually offered the house back to the town – totally free – and it has since turned into a cafe and tourist attraction (the world’s largest red paperclip sits out front). Kyle, who has moved on to other enterprising internet adventures, was once asked about the success of his venture, to which he replied, “In many ways, having no clue what you’re doing is one of the most powerful skills a person can ever possess.” 17

By Vera Wang The transition between Bangkok’s summer season and rainy season has been a quick transition for the most of us, with just small changes needed to make our wardrobe fit the forecast, while still allowing us to keep things trendy. One such way is to swap the breezy neon pleated skirts from earlier this summer, with more structured box pleated skirts, like those of Vera Wang’s charcoal stretch wool flannel box-pleated skirt. This high-waist pleated skirt, paired with a blouse, heels and a clutch, spells evening and day chic alike. You can purchase online at www.saks. com (List price 19,050 THB).

Though the market has been flooded with personalized phone cases in the past year or so, it is difficult to find something unique, modish, and long-lasting, all in one, especially for non-iPhone users. That’s why Boyy’s cases, available in vibrant metallic colors with embossed lettering, are such a hit. Available for order at bkkinfo@boyybag.com, for just 1,950 THB, they are the best pick for both iPhone and Samsung users who have yet to jump on this trendy bandwagon. Your own name, in your favorite colour, will guarantee a more lasting personal appeal.

All Soft Argan-6 Hair Oil Treatment By Redken From re-bonding and perming, to excessive colouring, we gals have put our hair through a lot over the years. Now there’s an affordable solution to dealing with all this dry, damaged hair, since getting regular treatments at hair salons is not a privilege many working women have at their disposal. Applying treatment oils at home may well be the next best, economical alternative, and if you’re going for that urban textured ponytail look so many fashion icons have been pulling off lately, this look can be achieved by applying Redken’s Argan-6 oil as a coat on damp hair. Not only is it treatment oil, it’s also used to style. Available for purchase in Bangkok at the ZenRed Salon – www.zenredsalonbangkok.com.
MEN’S TOTE BAG Marc By Marc Jacobs Long gone is the stigma of men carrying bags, as many males are now embracing the accessory rather than being selfconscious about it. Functionality is key to this style, so that means using this tote to carry daily essential items such as phones, keys, wallets, and work-related items such as small laptops, tablets and important documents. The colorful tote bags from Marc Jacob deliver quality and spaciousness – which well serves the function aspect – while at the same time adding color to what might be an otherwise monochromic work outfit.

“1 MILLION” EAU DE TOILETTE By Paco Rabanne Fragrances are an invisible accessory that helps men mark their presence amongst the fairer sex, but with the myriad of colognes available out there, which one is most effective at creating the right aura for you? That’s where Paco Rabanne’s latest fragrance creation comes to the rescue. Aptly named 1 Million (but costing only 3,400 THB), the scent –which comes shaped as a solid gold ingot – plays on the male ego, as well as the female’s attraction to money and shiny objects. The sweet citrus-y notes are balanced nicely with a woody, spicy scent, making this great accessory definitely worth a whiff.

With the wedding season approaching, one must prepare a formal attire to wear when in attendance, and that usually comprises of an ordinary black suit and pants, a dress shirt, and maybe a tie. These palladium plated metal cufflinks, in black, can be purchased for just 8,392 THB at www.neimunmarcus.com.

Planting seeds of financial wisdom
By Aunyapach Jirapattaroj
Start Routine Saving Now for Future Investment
"
The first important mindset to get into, when striving towards financial freedom, is the “desire to achieve your life’s goal”. Personal financial management can help achieve these kinds of goals, and once you know your destination, you just have to choose your vehicle, and your direction.
Where do your sources for investment come from
1.
Using Budgets: Whatever you earn as your income, you still must make a budget for your expenses. One common mistake people make is that they always pay more or equal to what they earn. That is why they do not have any savings left for investment. So start making your budget, and sticking to it, as of today.
2.
Forced Saving: The idea here is that you “save” before you “pay”. As an example, consider the provident fund that is deducted from your paycheck. That money is then invested by your fund manager. Now promise to yourself that you will save 10% of your income, and put that amount in a fixed interest account at the bank (and opt to have no ATM card for this account). After 1 year you will have a lump sum of money that you can manage, and invest in a higher rate of return asset.
?
3.
Skip expenditures: Reducing your expenses might sound unappealing, but wait till you do the math. For example, your favorite coffee costs you 40 THB, so that’s 1,200 THB a month, and a whopping 14,400 THB a year. If you cut back this small happiness, you’ll be saving both your pocket money and your shape and health. Put your coffee budget into stocks, which give 10% in dividends annually, and you’ll receive 1,440 THB (excluding capital gain from stock investment).
4.
Save your non-routine income: Who says you can only have one job to earn your income? To earn a little more, try working extra jobs. And if on special occasions you receive gifts from relatives or parents, save it! If your mindset is about saving routinely, you are planting seeds of financial wisdom for your future.
Knowing your sources of income will determine how fast you can achieve your financial goals. But savings alone are not going to get you to financial freedom. Investments are needed too, and in order to make wise investment decisions you must know yourself really well in terms of “Risk and Return”. Many people love the idea of “high risk, high return”, and of course people want to get the highest return possible from their investments, but few people can truly accept the big risks when it comes to putting their savings on the line.

Each of the A-One hotels has its own distinct character and feel, so it’s important for our staff to know this and be able to convey it to our customers.

GROWING UP WITH
A-ONE
26
It may be a mere two-hour drive from Bangkok, but Pattaya is nothing short of exciting. Its iconic beach welcomes tourists from all corners of the world to a tropical adventure of jet skis, island hopping, scuba diving, and many more activities. Animated by the best of smiles and pulsating with exhilarating nightlife, Pattaya is a destination packed with the thrill of the perfect holiday getaway. But amid the year-round good-time atmosphere that breathes life into this city, one can never miss the A-One Royal Cruise Hotel. This is because the hotel is no ordinary one. Designed like a ‘cruise ship’, guests are welcomed by a crew of friendly sailor-suited staff, and enjoy a buffet of the ocean’s freshest catch. Just steps away from the Pattaya beach, the hotel ‘docks’ itself majestically on the North Pattaya Beach Road. The Royal Cruise Hotel is only one part of the A-One Hotels Group, a family-run hotel business that has grown from one small motorist hotel in Bangkok to an impressive group of hotels and resorts in Pattaya. In this issue of MeTRO, we sat down with a passionate young man who has grown up within this family enterprise, and is now etching his own mark on a business he has called home. Now Assistant to Managing Director Khun Suppachai Rattanaopath tells us about the cruise he is now taking with A-One Hotels.
Today, Khun Suppachai works side by side with his father in overseeing the management of the Royal Cruise Hotel, while his father manages the others in the A-One Hotels Group.
It’s in the Family
Growing Up with A-One
Growing up as a child, Khun Suppachai had always been interested in the hotel business. “My father would always tell me very excitedly about what he’s been doing with the hotel,” he fondly recalls. “At every chance he got, he’d always tell me that the hotel business is the best out there,” he laughs. “When I was young, [the Royal Cruise Hotel] was like my playground,” he smiles. “I remember running around with my brother on the 8th floor because the hallways there were very large. The ground floor was my ‘football field’. Sometimes, the utilities room on the 10th floor was where I hid during hide-andseek.” Khun Suppachai took up his studies at Glion University, Switzerland, where he received his Master degree in International Hospitality & Service Industries Management with Marketing. He later worked as a trainee at the famous Ritz Carlton in Singapore, an experience which he describes as “invaluable”.
Known fondly as “Ey”, Khun Suppachai is used to the mentoring his father has given to him. After all, the hotel business has been the bread and butter of the family for decades. “It started with my grandparents,” he recounts. “They opened a small motorist hotel in Bangkok, and continuously improved on it.” “One day, my father found an ad in the newspaper for the sale of an empty plot of land in Pattaya. The place was a dumpsite for the garbage that came from hotels nearby. We bought it and built a hotel.” And the hotel did wonders. On what was once a neglected wasteland, two ship-shape buildings were constructed into a hotel that now boasts up to 466 ‘cabins’.” At its essence, the Royal Cruise Hotel seems like a piece of beautiful tapestry, sewn by the loving threads of Khun Ey’s family. The ship-shape architecture was, in fact, a spontaneous decision by Khun Ey’s grandfather. 27
“He walked over one day when my dad was designing the hotel and said, ‘add a ship head to it’,” he laughs. “He thought it’d look nice because the hotel directly faces the sea”. The delectable treat of wide-ranging food choices is the work of Khun Suppachai’s mother. “My mother was trained in Le Cordon Bleu, so she has been responsible for some of the menus here.”
Living Up to the Name
The A-One trademark, however, comes from Khun Ey’s grandmother. “She wants the hotels to be the best of the best—so she named it ‘A-One’”. And indeed the hotels make some of Pattaya’s many firsts. To state the obvious, A-One’s Royal Cruise Hotel is the city’s first hotel shaped as a cruise ship, a source of fascination among locals and tourists. Just right beside it is the A-One Pattaya Beach Resort, the first full service hotel in Pattaya to be fully equipped to handle guests in wheelchairs in all of its rooms. “This is the first of its kind,” Khun Ey says. “Usually hotels will set aside only a few rooms to receive guests in wheelchairs, but we decided to design all of the rooms like this. The way we see it is that if it can make our guests in wheelchairs happy, others will benefit from the extra spacious rooms and bathrooms as well.”
Aside from the support provided for guests in wheelchairs and the distinctive cruise ship shape, the A-One Hotels are also the first to provide full Halal meals to its guests, prepared by experienced Halal chefs. It is perhaps these little, thoughtful notes of which the family has played that has struck the right chords with its guests. The MeTRO team visited the A-One Hotels in Pattaya in mid September, during their ‘low season’, but we found ourselves amongst a large group of tourists who were getting their share of fresh prawns, crab, and mussels grilled right to order before their very eyes. When asked why he thinks this amount of tourists come to A-One even during the low-season, Khun Ey explains that it is perhaps the attention and care they give to their tour customers. They become almost part of the family. “When we first opened the Royal Cruise, my dad would literally be walking down the streets trying to get to know the different tour agencies in Pattaya. He’d directly contact them, and soon they became almost like our relatives.”
28
A-One…My Spin
As passionate as he is, Khun Suppachai is quite a visionary. Aside from helping his father manage the Royal Cruise, he is also overseeing the development of A-One Star, a low-budget hotel that he believes it will add great value to the family’s already successful hotel business. The hotel will be chic and looks to target Free and Independent Travelers (FIT), through the use of an online booking system.
“When I put my heart and mind into something, there is no failure.”
Khun Ey believes that expanding to the online market of FIT is the next step for A-One.“ Currently, over 90% of our guests are tourists on tour packages. This is an area that we have excelled within, and now we need to expand to other markets as well.” While there is a need to branch out, this young entrepreneur is careful to say that clarity in branding should also complement this expansion. “Each of the A-One hotels has its own distinct character and feel, so it’s important for our staff to know this and be able to convey it to our customers.” Aside from this, Khun Suppachai, 25, is also passionate about music, of which he hopes can be reflected in his work. “I like DJ-ing a lot, so my vision for A-One is to elevate it to include perhaps a sky bar or a nightclub, so that people can really have a good time.” As determined as he is, Khun Ey also admits that there is a lot left for him to learn. “There are of course people who have been working here ever since I was a little boy,” he says. It sometimes feels weird to receive a wai from them. But I’m not here to be their ‘boss’, I’m here to learn the business with them.” Khun Ey has a very warm relationship with his staff at A-One. “We all like Khun Ey very much,” one of the staff says. “He’s very clever, yet very humble.” Growing up at A-One and being trained at Ritz Carlton in Singapore has taught him the importance of caring for his staff. “HR management is a very important part of a business. This is because it allows us to recruit and retain the best people. Very few family businesses pay attention to this.” While his career may be at its beginning, Khun Suppachai says success is the only option. “When I put my heart and mind into something, there is no failure.” Determined, passionate, and innovative, Khun Ey is the third generation in a hotel business that has grown alongside the family. From a small motorist hotel in Bangkok to a ‘cruise ship hotel’ that docks itself in front of the iconic Pattaya beach, the ‘sky’ is the limit to what Khun Ey achieve. After all, it is with the same vision and determination that has taken A-One to where it is today.

Kasabol Bowonsri Unwavering Leadership
An astute businessman poised with a Buddhist outlook on life, Khun Kasabol is the recently appointed Business Development Director of Property Care Services (Thailand) Ltd., the largest multi-facility service provider in the country. While having just joined PCS a little over two months ago, this seasoned executive brings to the table more than 20 years of experience in consumer product marketing and sales, as well as his expertise in sustainable energy management. Many, however, may know him as co-host of the Nation TV program U-Sabuy, where Khun Kasabol gives his insights on energy sustainability of various architectural designs. 30
The Man for the Job
Khun Kasabol’s appointment comes at an important time, as PCS shifts its gears towards what it calls Total Facilities Management (TFM), an integrated complete facilities management service offered to business clients. As the company makes this new turn, Khun Kasabol says that sustainability is key. “If we can make our customers grow their business sustainably, we too will grow sustainably,” he explains. “Our challenge right now is to use technology and innovation to deliver more to our customers.” Sustainability and innovation are two things that this executive knows very well. Previously a Business Development Director at Double A International, he spearheaded marketing strategies that have catapulted the company’s revenues to billions of Baht. Also, as Vice President of Energy Management Services at Schneider Electric Thailand, Khun Kasabol has indepth knowledge of developing cuttingedge sustainable energy management solutions for business clients.
half-full glass, willing and always eager to learn and adapt.” “You can’t shun yourself away from change,” he says, “because if you’re not prepared to adapt, you will definitely lag behind the trend. You must have a high ‘learning agility’ regardless of which level of management you occupy.”
Finding the Balance
While it seems that this executive is always on the go, Khun Kasabol doesn’t stretch himself thin. Buddhism, he says, provides the core principle that keeps his life in balance. “Time management is not a really a problem,” he says. This is perhaps because,
in everything he does, Khun Kasabol is able to look beyond the task and see the people behind them. “In my family, I am responsible for my family members; at work, I take care of my employees; and on the TV program, I am responsible to, and have respect for my viewers.” It is perhaps the level of respect he has for the people in his life that has energized him to give his best at everything he does. While his journey may be at the beginning at PCS, it is sure to be purposeful one. Poised with the calmness and character of a Buddhist practitioner, and determined with the vision and agility of a seasoned executive, Khun Kasabol is leading his team at PCS to greater heights.
Leadership
But it is not only the skills and management style that Khun Kasabol brings with him from years of experience. It’s also leadership. “What is an organization?” he muses. “It’s just a word, but at its core, the organization is its people” “Everyone has potential,” he begins to explain, “so as a leader, your role is to draw that potential out. A leader needs to be able to inspire his/her employees to realize their own talents. Employees who understand the value of their work, and what they can do, will give you their best.” Aside from motivating employees to trust in themselves, Khun Kasabol also says that trust between everyone in the organization is equally important. “An organization can’t function when everyone is working towards their own self-interest, trying to take advantage of one another. Instead, everyone has to trust in each other and work towards the same goal.” “This goal has to be clearly communicated in a way that everyone can understand,” he continues, “So that all systems can be aligned to that goal.” In this way, he says, the organization can be run effectively.
Management Philosophy
The business world is undoubtedly a fastpaced one, and one that is constantly being transformed by technology and innovation. In this energetic environment, Khun Kasabol advises that one should “be like a

RONGRAMDEE I
n the generation of social media, a ton of tools have been launched to meet the demand of a constantly recording and sharing generation. As these devices become simpler and simpler to use, they become more a part of every day life. And among the most impressive moments to record and share, are those experienced on trips, or vacations. However most places tourists frequent, and the tourist attractions they see there, remain the same from traveler to traveler, some were even shot from the same camera angles as the others. So the new trend is all about to find the coolest “accommodation”, as those locales are more dynamic and varied than the place itself sometimes. This is the key concept that Rongramdee producers use, in order to reach a whole new media savvy generation. To match their online behavior, the producers provide a total multimedia platform, via their Website, e-Magazine and Facebook page.

“It’s not just an accommodation anymore; people choose some places to stay as their whole travel destination,” explains Gaid Phitthayakornsilp, one of the editors at Rongramdee. His previous experiences include film and advertising production, location scout surveyor, film director assistant, documentary playwright and director, and photographer. He is now the key figure behind many successful travel-related publications, both in Thailand and Laos. “Traveling is my life,” he goes on to say, and working on this project is like his break from less adventurous day-to-day managerial tasks. “The world has changed, and accommodations are getting more and more influential,” adds Surachai Tantichot (Beyase), the 2nd editor at Rongramdee. With a background in media – editor of GOTO and BAREFOOT magazines, TV producer, Kiatnakin Bank In Marcom Manager, photographer, and radio DJ – he has now returned to his passion as magazine editor. “I can devote all my energy to something that’s right for me, and Rongramdee is just right,” he admits. The word ‘Rongramdee’ is from the Thai language and means ‘good’ hotels, and various perspectives of ‘good’
e-Magazine
Presenting New Travel Destinations for a New Generation
accommodations are laid for Rongramdee readers. There is no target reader segmentation based on wealth; it’s only the preference that counts. But readers can be sure that with every single accommodation presented, there is a definite ‘story’ behind it. The “little things” in these places are big things for the magazine – and reflects the viewpoint of the new generation. “Credibility is crucial. We are not going to put commercial accommodation review together in the main content. It’s not the matter of commerce, but the matter of stories and quality,” Gaid points out. “We have to be there at the place to feel and experience it before we do a review,” Beyase adds. “We don’t treat Rongramdee as easy online media. We even design the e-Magazine like a printed magazine in our own unique European-Japanese collage style” The single message behind Rongramdee e-Magazine is that everyone can find ‘good’ accommodation ideas here, but to be the gateway for e-Magazine downloading is not piquant enough for the magazine’s website, www.rongramdee.com. What they really want to make possible for the website is the creation of a ‘traveling and hospitality community’ for both B2C and B2B,
with features for customers to check out the content, as well as travel experiences (shared by the community), hospitality educative content by experts, hospitality job matching, and also a ‘meeting space’ for customers and hospitality service providers. “More or less, every single person who visits the site will get something out of it,” Gaid says, in conclusion. KARMA POLICE
Solo exhibition by Yuree Kensaku
RESORT: AN EXHIBITION FOR THE LANDSCAPE OF REST Shift your personal perception to another type of travelling
Space, time, and possession of self define the meaning of ‘Resort’ that is different from an explanation of place we are familiar. An art exhibition for landscape offers visions relating to the world and the surroundings to shift personal perception from the outward realm to the inward void for a true understanding in the concept of rest. Through broadening the boundary of landscape, averting concept of time, transforming emotions to comprehension, and finding a specific position of self in the vast geography, the artworks voice diverse narrations extending the meaning of landscape, supporting the attitude of rest that reaches beyond the physical plane. The artist shares her experience of being cheated by a construction contractor, a situation which left her homeless and studio-less. While facing considerable upheaval and angst, the artist was reminded of the natural rules of the law of Karma and took a step back to look around and observe how different religions have different ways of looking at how the world works. In terms of technique and materials, Yuree employs fiberglass in the series. The resulting works blur the line between painting and sculpture. The opening reception at 7pm on Thursday, 29 August 2013 will include a special animation and live sound performance by Yuree Kensaku and Moderndog guitarist May-T Noijinda. 100 Tonson Gallery, Ploenchit Rd., Lumpini, 29 Aug - 03 Nov 2013 For more information: info@100tonsongallery.com www.100tonsongallery.com

Sustainability Matters
Why do we all have to care about sustainability? Some people might think this word only means that we should save the forest, but there’s a lot more to the matter. But is this a matter for businesses to concern themselves with? Some people cannot see, or find, the linkage between themselves and sustainability. In this issue of MeTRO we have invited special guests to talk about this very subject.
“We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them” - Albert Einstein
Sustainable Business: Why should
businesses care
about sustainability? By Sal Forest
Einstein’s famous quote is perhaps an apt description of the “sustainable business” concept nowadays. In the not too distant past, thinking about “sustainability” was seen as either a luxury for companies, or a temporary solution when besieged by activists over their poor social and environmental performance. With numerous push and pull factors exerted by different stakeholders, businesses have become gradually aware that “sustainability” is essential for their survival and growth in an economy that is fast-changing, complex, and full of unforeseen risks.
T
here are several “push” and “pull” factors for companies to be sustainable. On the “push” side, the internet has made word-of-mouth more powerful than ever before. NGOs and activists are more creative when they pressure businesses, and more of them are finding it more fruitful to engage businesses in impact-oriented co-operations rather than confrontation. On the “pull” side, many factors are inducing the companies to “do good” in order to “do well”. Inherently more sustainable businesses – organic food, microfinance, and fair-trade products – are proving to be both rapidly growing and lucrative. The Bottom of the Pyramid (BOP)” market, or the “poor” market, has US $5 trillion purchasing power; a massive economic opportunity that attracts more and more companies.
36
More and more companies come to see “the business case” of sustainability. While some companies are still motivated to be more sustainable by ethical considerations, many companies now see gains from increasing eco-efficiency and risk mitigations when they respond to sustainability challenges such as climate change. Additionally, creating brand-new products that draw on sustainability concerns are proving to be profitable in many cases. An amazing example of meeting this sustainability challenge is the story of Interface, the world’s leading office carpet company, who used to run their business in a “linear system”, or “cradle-to-grave” fashion – which Leonard poignantly captured in her film – but changed their entire business model to be more sustainable. The change was lead by Ray C. Anderson, founder and chairman, who in 1994 set out to achieve a zero ecological footprint by 2020. Since 1996, the non-renewable energy use per unit of production decreased 61%, with 36% of energy used coming from renewable
sources. As well, 49% of their total raw materials are now recycled, or bio-based, and water intake per unit of production is down 81%. And, most importantly, waste per unit of production is down 91%. Meanwhile, Interface’s sales and profits have been rising at an average of 10% annually, from the period of 2003 to 2011. Another example, also stemming from the 1990s, concerns sportswear manufacturer Nike, who were notorious for their overseas sweatshops and use of child labor. The firm was under heavy criticism from many NGOs in many countries, and even though it was very challenging for Nike to monitor approximately 600 factories of suppliers around the world, which employ over 800,000 workers combined, the company put a lot of effort in implementing the new labor code of conduct. They opened up factories for inspectors and third-party audits, partnering with NGOs, and voluntarily published the names and addresses of contract factories. One decade later, Nike took sustainability into another level with the launch of “Nike Materials Sustainability Index”, the initiative that took 6 years to catalog 75,000 materials, and gave each of them a score based on their environmental impact and long-term sustainability. Nike’s CSR and Sustainability team work with designers to ensure that their products are more sustainable every year. Nowadays, it is not too difficult to find effective sustainability practices in various industries.
In cosmetics, a key part of the Body Shop’s mission statement is to the pursuit of social and environmental change. The company is well-known for its successful campaign against animal testing and support of fairtrade with local community suppliers. In the beverage industry, Starbucks has been reducing risks in the coffee supply chain through their small-scale producer support programs and fair-trade purchases, in order to help small farmers. In the food industry, Unilever nowapplies sustainable sourcing, especially for palm oil – an ingredient that causes vast deforestation in manufacturing countries across Southeast Asia. Now is the time for businesses to be more than “good corporate citizens” and “philanthropists.” Sustainability is no longer a luxurious do-gooder trend, or a short-term response to pressure from NGOs, customers, local communities, and other stakeholders. Being a sustainable business means a lucrative opportunity in cost reductions, risk management, new markets, and creating long-term competitive advantages. Climate change and other environmental and social challenges will make it harder for businesses to operate, but responding to these challenges is the only way forward when traditional business approaches have proven to be flawed. Sustainable business is not only good for the firm, but is also good for their stakeholders, the country, and the planet – which is the only planet we have.
About the authors Sal Forest is the name of Thailand’s first “sustainable business accelerator”, and the company was co-founded by Sarinee Achavanuntakul, a prolific author and translator, and Pattraporn Yamla-or, marketer and social businesswoman who co-founded the Southeast Asia round of Global Social Venture Competition (GSVC). The company aims to jumpstart and sustain a public discourse on sustainable business in Thailand via events, workshops and training courses, print and online media, as well as by conducting research on important sustainability issues in Thailand, social impact assessment, and social returns on investment.

Ocean Marina Yacht Club:
Green initiative
of l u x u r i o u s l i f e s t y l e b u s i n e ss by Scott Finsten
Considered the biggest marina in Southeast Asia, the Ocean Marina Yacht Club is located in the Na Jomtien area of Chonburi, about 2 hours drive southeast of Bangkok. This worldclass marina, which also offers boat storage and launching facilities, is joined by 2 adjacent condominiums, the San Marino and the newly opened Ocean Portofino.
A
s manager of Ocean Marina, I have seen the club’s implementation of long-standing and sound environmental practices. Indeed, when the property was developed about 20 years ago, one of the initiatives was to construct lakes to catch the rainwater. Today, the water from our lakes is used to irrigate the beautifully designed Nong Nooch Gardens landscape, allowing us to conserve our precious water supply, and give back to the environment as well. The environment is a concern for all of us as we all depend on it. At the yacht club we recognize this, and have environmental procedures in place, including not allowing boats to pump out bilge, and not permitting fishing within the marina. We see our marina as a fish sanctuary, and a place where we can nurture and care for our environment. If we didn’t take this sort of care, then we wouldn’t have the beautiful beaches and clear water that Pattaya, and Thailand in general, is famous for all around the world. As an organization, we are constantly looking at what we can do to continue with our environmental initiatives. One area is our membership within the Marina Industries Association (MIA) based in Australia. The MIA, together with the Global Marina Institute (GMI) and the British Marine Federation (BMF) is a partnership formed to deliver global
marina training and certification with the aim of maintaining and increasing standards in marinas across the world. One initiative of these bodies is the Clean Marina Program. This international program is a voluntary, incentive-based, education and outreach program that encourages environmental compliance and the use of best management practices for marinas. The focus of the program is to assist the marina industry operators in their endeavors to protect inland and coastal waterways by leading them through a voluntary accreditation process. At the Ocean Marina Yacht Club we are committed to the development of these principles, and we are working towards making our marina a regional leader in ‘environmental best’ practices. The environment depends on every single person in order to survive, and it is up to us all to do something about it every day, no matter how small the gesture. All it needs is for each of us to pick up a piece of rubbish off the ground, or to educate our children to act responsibly and put garbage in the bin, and not on the ground. Environmental education can’t begin early enough, and if we all do a little every day, the world will change for the better. And in the meantime, let’s all work on keeping Thailand beautiful!
About the author Scott Finsten has been working in the marine industry since 1991. Starting off managing Cammeray Marina, a small 23-berth marina in Sydney. He later went on to work a d’Albora Marinas supervising the Akuna Bay Marina, The Spit and later Rushcutters Bay Marina. After a short stint as captain of a 75’ motor vessel – during the time of the Sydney Olympics – Scott found the lure of marinas too strong and in 2001 joined the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia. In 2010 he moved to Thailand to manage Ocean Marina Yacht Club.

Sustainable Architecture: Living green means making important choices Story & Photos by Chunlaporn Nuntapanich Words by Gift Preekamol Chantaranijakorn
All man-made architecture has been through design processes that ensure the most efficient functioning, in order to meet human demand. But form can be just as important as function, and lots of architecture has also been designed for the sake of beauty. And as we all know, human beings are capable of unlimited demands, so there’s no doubt that huge amounts of resources were, and are, being used for architectural consumption.
L
ooking deeper into the perspective of the design process – far deeper than just the matter of physical aspects and materials – I feel the process should be something that allows for humans to live in harmony with both nature and the modern world. The most important challenge now is, how we can live in this dynamic society while consuming as few resources as possible? Considering this mindset, from the point of view of architecture, leads us to the issue of ‘sustainable architecture.’ As I see it, sustainable architecture consists of architectural design, ideally built utilizing simple local materials – no complex process with appropriate technology applied. The completed buildings are not the end of the story, as sustainable architecture concepts also include the life cycle of all materials concerned. Materials should be biodegradable, and emit no pollutants into the environment. Furthermore, users can take care of and maintain this architecture by themselves, with as little energy needed as possible to live conveniently and in harmony with nature, as well as with the surrounding local neighborhoods. Similarly, how we view “living” is part of the same issue here. In one aspect, living is all
about making decisions pertaining to every single thing we do. ‘Sustainable living’ is the decision to stay connected to nature, and also to consume resources based on a deliberate need, and not in wasteful way (for example leaving water running while shaving or doing the dishes). Furthermore, those resources we use should be as much as biodegradable, renewable, and non-polluting as possible. This deep connection with nature is the key concept to living sustainably. The way most human beings live and think nowadays – in a way that keeps depleting or exploiting resources – can only lead to more and more trouble in the world. An obvious example would be dam construction projects that seek only to prevent floods, instead of adapting to them. Although it seems like there’s nothing wrong with a dam, and it’s a great solution, in my point of view the greed and egoism of the human being has led to feigned ignorance about the needs of the many other flora, fauna and wild being species in this world who rely on those waters and are, in fact, endangered by the dam. In fact the situation now is that we all are endangered, but we should all be able to perceive the solution if we look deep enough into everything, and not just fixate on the surface.

About the author Chunlaporn Nuntapanich is a lecturer-cum-specialist at the Faculty of Architecture, Chiang Mai University. Firmly rooted in the worldwide green architecture movement, he has always been an architect who designs with a show of respect for nature and the environment. Although he was born in Bangkok, his family established themselves for more than 300 years on Koh Samui Island, and Chunlaporn lived there when he was young. The island had no electricity at that time, and he lived in a full embrace with nature. Similarly his experiences in the remote area of Thailand have shaped his architectural vision. His own lifestyle – commuting by bike, living in energy saving house built by local materials and using no electrical tools – is a true example of the ‘sustainable and peaceful life’ he preaches. 40
Sustainable Tourism: Volunteerism
to slum tourism
By Supathas Bell
People have lately been associating the terms ‘sustainability’ and ‘tourism’, but it’s still debatable whether they can be one and the same. The definition of both words is subjective. At the moment, sustainable tourism is gaining a reputation, but can large-scale tourism strictly adhere to the word’s meaning? By definition, sustainable implies “using something slowly, while at the same time replenishing the source – economically, environmentally and socially”. However when taking these 3 aspects into account, many communities and tour operators are finding it hard to call themselves truly ‘sustainable’. Regardless, this catchphrase, by itself, has become a prime selling point.
T
here are many subsets for sustainable tourism, such as ecotourism, volunteerism and slum tourism, just to name a few. Currently, I myself am volunteering in Manila, Philippines, as part of a group of 30 young ASEAN professionals, gathered together to improve the livelihood of the community through slum tourism. Our efforts are directed to the Baseco community, an informal urban settlement in the heart of Manila City, which houses around 12,000 families. What differentiates this district from the rest of Manila is its entrance. Here there is no line, nor boundary, as just a sole entrance paves the way inside. Baseco is also one of the scariest places to be in Manila due to its by high crime rates. Like many other slums worldwide, this one suffers from water shortages, lack of sewage systems, lack of electricity, mountainous waste, minimum sanitation, poor health care, and diseases. Yet despite these challenges, many of the residents are working hard trying to improve their standards of living, and
seem just as contented as others Pinoys (possibly even more). Baseco is ripe for slum tourism development, even though the concept raises a lot of concerns among skeptics. By contrast locals – employed by private companies as tour guides to offer insights into their plight – are keen on this business model, and many tourists look forward to getting a “real-life” experience. As an offshoot, more shops spring up to quench their curiosity, thereby inviting additional sources of income. Although slum tourism faces stigmatization, as the community can be mistaken for a ‘human zoo’, it should be considered as one of the most sustainable subsets of tourism, as it generates income for the locals, in turn preserving culture and the environment. In my opinion, sustainable tourism is distinct because it possesses the intention to improve the livelihood of the community, and if my volunteerism can further support the community to do slum tourism, then my travels have made a difference.

Energy Management: Enhancing the competitiveness
of the business sector By Somchai Pongsaran
Pisit: “Khun Somchai, saving is a good thing. Reducing cost by 1 THB means that you have 1 THB more in your hand immediately. Why are most people not interested?” Somchai: “Khun Pisit, I was surprised too. Savings by energy management can reduce costs to organization by almost half, but I found many top managers were not as interested as they should have been.”
Pisit: “Or is Energy Management just too complicated and too costly to manage?” Somchai: “I may have 15 years experience working as an energy expert, and an educational background in the field of Business, but I can still assure you that it’s not too technical the average person. There’s no need for complex calculations. Just some common sense is needed. And many of the devices that are in most organizations are the same devices you have in your home – just perhaps in different sizes.” “Here, I will show you one example of a lingerie factory, and their energy saving methods.”
With a few simple measures, this factory cut electricity cost from 2.3 to 1.5 Million THB per month – a savings of 800,000 THB. These measures are simple, and virtually no additional time or resources are required. Another crucial point to consider in this success story is the top manager. By establishing a strong energy policy, appointing a good management representative, and also providing resources – such as budget, time, personnel and information, they were able to make a difference.
1. Reduce energy use at peak time: This was accomplished by changing overtime shifts from nighttime to early morning. The electricity TOD (Time of Day) peak of this firm was from 18.30 to 21.30. By switching, they cut peak TOD usage from 1100 kW to 56 kW – a savings of 230,000 THB! 2. Train employees: This was accomplished by training all the employees (3,000 people) to routinely do energy saving in their homes. If these concerns – such as not forgetting to unplug the TV at home – become part of their daily routine, they will likewise not forget such things as turning off the sewing machines at work.” “I would say that the key concept to successful energy saving lies within one word – and that word is “ownership”.
NOTE: Although Energy Management is easy, it still needs to be run by qualified professionals.

LeamgateSeafood When one is hungry for a proper seafood meal, most people have their tried and true favourites, so only a few options readily spring to most people’s minds. However in my experience, it seems that over the past few years I’ve encountered some unfortunate and unappreciated changes in some of my favourite seafood haunts. Many have become too commercialized, and profit-oriented, causing them to lose their authenticity and their passion for cooking. However Leamgate Seafood, a family-run business originally based in Sriracha (established in 1984), is a brave exception.
T oday, Leamgate has reopened at
Rainhill on Sukhumvit 47, and is still operating as a family business. The restaurant interior may seem modern, but the restaurant itself carries the same menu – and recipes – from over half a century ago. And the 3 dishes I had were really something special. The meal started with oysters, fresh from the family’s own farm. Although they may seem smaller than other Thai oysters, like those from Surat Thani, they still have the same body and texture, and 46
in fact, are slightly stronger in scent. And when eaten Thai style – with fired shallots, fresh garlic, a bit of chili paste, and seafood sauce – eating them is definitely an experience you won’t want to miss! My second dish was the restaurant’s specialty – fried squid with salted egg. Perfectly bite-sized, the squid soaks up all the juice and stickiness of the salted egg yolk sauce, and when eaten with a plate of hot white rice, it makes a heavenly meal, to say the least.
Finally, top it all off, the last dish – and the one I found to be the most impressive – was the delectable crispy crab and prawn rolls. Consisting of a traditional Chinese roll and crab and prawn meat rolled up in tofu skimming, the entire dish is then deep-fried before serving. Rarely can you find an example of this dish with such clear evidence of the meat inside, as opposed to just the usual abundance of flour. With the crabs and prawns coming again from the family’s own fishery, there is no surprise that the portions are generous, and superb freshness and quality is the order of the day. And with tofu skimming bought fresh from local stores everyday, the thin and extreme crispness of the surface makes this the ‘Top Dish’ here, and one that you can’t easily find anywhere else in Bangkok. 99 RestBackyard Café Wouldn’t it be incredible to enjoy a delightful and tasty meal in a restaurant, in the same manner as having a picnic in our own backyard? Well, there’s a place I’ve just discovered called 99 Rest Backyard Café that does just that. The restaurant operates under the unique slogan: “Everyday is a picnic in the park. Bring your party, we’ll cook for you!”
T he highlight of the restaurant is definitely the atmosphere, which offers the experience of dining under the shade of a large rain tree (also known as a chamchuri tree) in a garden decorated with various beautiful flora. It’s a perfect place to bring your date for a romantic candlelit dinner, as any wishes you may have will be granted by the restaurant staff.
The menu is a fabulous mixture of fresh ingredients and intriguing recipes. For those who favour a spin on northern Thai food, the fusion between Thai and Italian dishes, like the nam prik ong spaghetti – a mix of northern Thai pork and tomato dip, served over pasta – is highly recommended. Another must try, this one for seafood lovers, is the scallop and pomelo spicy salad, perhaps better known as yum som oh hoy, which mixes the freshness of both the pomelo and scallops together to create a beautiful taste combination.
The restaurant also offers tea, coffee, and a delicious range of desserts, which makes it the perfect place for hanging out and relaxing with friends, family, and (especially) romantic dates. We’re sure

Vegetarian Festival
By Pan Roque
Filling My Veggie
Belly
Once every year, vegetarians in Thailand rejoice the coming of the annual vegetarian festival, when top chefs and local eateries over the country whip up their best recipes to appease the veggie appetite. Believed to be of Chinese origin, the festival promotes abstinence from consuming meat products in honor of the Goddess Guan Yin. Over the years, the tradition has gained a hefty following of those who seek physical and mental purification. Long lines in front of ‘JAY’ shops have now become a common sight. But going on a vegetarian diet for 10 days, as is typically practiced, can be challenging, if not aggravating to some. To the unapologetic meat lovers, going vegetarian (or worse yet, vegan) is synonymous to a chore of tofu diet that dulls the senses. But aggravate no more, because we at Metro have found a restaurant that gives raw vegan food a delicious kick. Rasayana Retreat’s food café, Sukhumvit 39, is a raw food café that will delight you to raw vegan food gastronomy. But before you start thinking about nibbling on tastier versions of carrot and celery sticks, you can kiss those thoughts good-bye. The café’s specials include mouth-watering dishes like the Sun Burger, an almond-celery-sage patty served in a cabbage leaf, topped with ‘live ketchup’. Fancy something Italian? Try Spaghetti & meatballs, which is marinated zucchini noodles topped with savory almond nutmeat balls dowsed in a zesty homemade marinara sauce. And of course, a meal such as this cannot be complete without desserts. Sample the Banana ice cream made of frozen creamy banana infused with vanilla and a delicious note of macadamia nut cream. Whatever your choice may be, the Rasayana Retreat café offers the best of the vegan world. This is because each dish has been meticulously crafted and prepared by an experienced chef who specializes in raw vegan food. But what exactly is raw vegan food? It’s simple— it’s vegan food that hasn’t been cooked above 43°C. This is important because foods that are processed beyond that level start to lose tremendous amounts of nutrients, which can lead to overeating. In other words, this is one nutritious meal you can enjoy eating and lose weight! More than this, raw foods are also very rich in alkaline, which helps in cleansing and rejuvenating your body. This means that eating raw food is like giving yourself high-octane fuel that will boost your energy throughout the day! It is quite rare, in the world of delicious food, to find a healthy meal. But the Rasayana Retreat café has managed to give us a delicious cocktail of both worlds. The veggie belly will never run empty again.

From early June to mid-September the days are warm and sunny, and the nights are just the right temperature for evening strolls, and outdoor wining and dining.
2. Niagara Falls 1. The CN Tower Yes, it’s the most “touristy” thing you can do here, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth a look. Built in 1976, the 553.33 m high CN Tower once held the distinction of being the tallest free-standing structure in the world (a title which now belongs to the Burj Dubai skyscraper in Dubai), and visitors can take the glass elevator up to the 3 lookout areas – the Glass Floor and Outdoor Observation Terrace (342 m), the Indoor Lookout Level (346 m), and the SkyPod (446.5 m). On a clear day the views are incredible, and the tower’s aptly named 360° Restaurant makes a complete rotation every 72 minutes, giving diners a chance to see it all.
Niagara Falls
Although not strictly in Toronto, Niagara Falls is only a 2-3 hour drive from the city, and makes a great day trip. Located on the Niagara River, which flows from Lake Erie into Lake Ontario, these falls have the highest water flow rate of any waterfall in the world, and the vertical drop measures more than 50 m. It’s an impressive sight, and tour boats drift back and forth around the base of the falls, giving visitors a chance to see, and hear, the thunderous deluge close up. And while in the Niagara region, make a side trip to the amazing Niagara Valley wine-growing region and sample some fantastic white, red, and world famous ice wines.
City Hall
3. Queen Street Although there are many busy commercial streets criss-crossing the downtown core, nothing represents the cultural and ethnic mix of Toronto better than Queen Street. The street itself runs well over 5 kms, and stretches from the far west end of the city to the extreme east end, creating a passageway that is home to an astonishing array of businesses and residents. There’s hundreds of shops, bars, hotels, cafés, restaurants, galleries and boutiques along the way, but you’ll also stumble across such landmarks as City Hall, The Eaton Centre, and Trinity Bellwoods Park, as well as thousands of colourfully diverse residents who live on, or near, the street itself.

4. Hipster Havens If you thought hipsters could only be found in Brooklyn or Portland, think again. Toronto is full of them, and their 2 most prominent stomping grounds are the southern tip of Ossington Ave (below Dundas St), and a ramshackle Bohemian enclave known as Kensington Market. Apart from beards and handlebar moustaches, expect to find an array of upscale organic restaurants, bars serving smallbatch beers, vintage clothing stores, and lots and lots of fabulous coffee shops.

5. Lake Ontario & The Toronto Islands
Toronto Islands
Toronto sits firmly on the shores of Lake Ontario, but sometimes it’s easy to forget that fact since the view of the lake is, for the most part, obscured by highway overpasses, office buildings, and condo developments. But down at the shore there are numerous yacht clubs and marinas, where sailing enthusiasts spend the summer months taking their boats out onto the open waves. And at the foot of Bay St. you can catch one of the daily ferries that take passengers over to the nearby Toronto Islands. These 3 small islands lie just offshore from the city’s downtown core, and are comprised of parks, residential homes, a few beaches, and numerous bike and walking paths. It makes a fabulous day trip, and offers amazing views of the dramatic Toronto skyline, and the islands are notable for being the largest urban car-free community in North America.
6. Architecture Districts
7. Cinemas & Film Festivals
Fans of gothic revival architecture will love visiting landmark buildings such as The Cathedral Church of St. James (65 Church St), which is one of the loveliest of the city’s old churches, dating back to 1797. There’s also plenty of stunning residential architecture on display – right downtown – and the well-to-do east end neighbourhood known as Cabbagetown comprises the largest continuous area of preserved Victorian housing in all of North America (making it a great place for an afternoon stroll).
Toronto is a movie-mad metropolis and cinephiles are well catered to by the city’s many movie houses. And while there are many commercial cinemas around town, independent repertory cinemas also flourish (including the Bloor Cinema, which shows nothing but documentaries). And during the first 2 weeks of September the city is taken over by the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), which has become an annual mecca for serious film buffs and stargazers. In fact this festival has become so successful that the organization recently constructed it’s very own TIFF Bell Lightbox cinema – a veritable museum for movies that screens cult classics, avant garde gems, and cutting edge new releases, year-round.

8. Bicycle Paths Although the city is renowned for having a decent public transportation system, bicycles are by far the best way to get around Toronto efficiently, especially now that many downtown streets have designated bike lanes. Of course visitors to the city seldom bring their own bikes, but luckily there’s BIXI – a low cost public bike sharing system, launched in 2011, that features 80 rent stations and over 1,000 bikes. And once you do get hold of a bicycle, there are numerous specially designed scenic bike trails that zig-zag throughout the city, including the famous Martin Goodman Trail – a 36 km path that runs primarily along the city’s waterfront. 53
9. Cultural Landmarks Toronto is home to 3 major league sports teams (baseball, basketball and hockey), so sports fans are well catered to, but lovers of art, music and theatre can find plenty of interest here as well. The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) has a diverse permanent collection, as well as many rotating special exhibitions, as does the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). Meanwhile Queen Street West is bursting at the seams with independent cutting-edge galleries and studios, the most notable of which is the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (Mocca). However many people agree that local culture is at its best in the form of music, and catching a local band at any one of the city’s numerous live music clubs is a great way to see the stars of tomorrow today. By the same token Toronto’s vibrant live theatre scene offers everything from lavish Broadway style musical stage shows, to independently produced experimental theatre. Did you know such well-known actors and comedians as Jim Carrey, Kiefer Sutherland, Keanu Reeves, Rachel McAdams, and Russell Peters all got their start on Toronto stages?

10. Restaurants & Bars One of the most significant features of Toronto is that it is a city where people of all nationalities can live, prosper, and, most importantly, get along. As a result, the city is a melting pot of various cultures, and each new immigrant community has staked out their own little section – in turn opening countless fabulous restaurants. The city has its very own Chinatown, Korea Town, Polish Town and Greek Town, as well as a Little Italy, Little India, and even an Africaville, so finding a good meal is never a problem. And if you’re keen on some uniquely Canadian cuisine, hipster restaurants such as Woodlot, Bannock, and Keriwa Café are reviving menu items such as bison, venison, and the quintessentially Canadian poutine. And to wash down all this good food, nothing beats a cold beer. Canadians are famous for their brews and the locally produced craft beer market is growing stronger every year. For a great sampling of what the city has achieved, head to the Mill Street Brew Pub, in the east end Distillery District, and spend a sunny afternoon trying a variety of ales, lagers, stouts and pilsners. You’ll probably still be there come nightfall. Shangri-La Hotel

Following Your Dreams:
Unjida Chimcome
Beauty is a woman’s dream. And while some women have a difficult time finding the products that best suit their skin to caress their beauty, ‘Khun Fon’, or Unjida Chimcome, is lucky enough to have found (and founded) herself as a skin-care product manufacturer, now owning a brand, and making a fortune out of it. We are not talking about a middle-aged lady who has gone through tough times in business life here. The girl we’ve got is only 28 years old! Graduated with a degree in Communication Arts, Khun Fon never had a formal background in marketing. Nevertheless, when her pharmacist sister asked her four years ago if she wanted to market and sell a skin cream her sister developed, she jumped into it right away. Now, their skin-care product lines are distributed in Thailand, Australia, and top sales in Laos. “Taking good care of myself has always been one of my routine priorities,” she says as she fondly remembers having apply skin lotion when she was as young as 4. The passion kick-started, and continues to fuel her brand as ‘Kaniste’, an emerging cosmetic brand for women who like to give their skin a little treat.
“Our brand popularity and loyalty is the fruit of the customers’ trust in the product quality,” says the belle owner of Kaniste. Khun Fon confesses they import ingredients from around the world to create the finest recipes for a super sensitive skin type. Her sister is responsible for the research and development of their products. She expertly handles the marketing and branding of Kaniste, drawing on her skills in human communication, something she developed over the years as a TV host and MC at various events.
need to have faith that things will be okay,” something her supportive husband always tells her to temper her frustrations and worries.
Khun Fon is married to a supportive husband who is also her business partner. They have just bought a Mercedes Benz and now live in a lovely house purchased with the money they have made. Her life is beautiful. Yet, she remembers the days when she was one of the lost teenagers searching hard for the right career.
Today, despite her very tight work schedule, she always finds time to devote to doing other things - spending time with her family, playing with her dogs, and so on. And maybe that is the main ingredient for her beautiful life – the right portions of time dedicated to doing a bunch of things based on her passion and interest.
Khun Fon used to dream of being a flight attendant. But when she actually got the post, she hated it so much and had to flunk herself in final test so she could quit the job! She eventually found herself extremely happy being a TV presenter. And she is still a TV presenter today. Once a week she squeezes in a shoot at Channel 7’s studio into her already busy business woman’s schedule. “It all starts off with knowing yourself and knowing what you like. Set a goal, and follow your dream. If it’s not right for you, leave it. Don’t ever think you are too young or too old to start something,” she concludes. Learning the business from scratch, she says, “There were rough times, but you 58
“There will always be challenges and obstructions in everything you do. But there is no need to stress over them. I’ve learnt to be calm and I always tell myself to do the best I can. There must be a rainbow somewhere after the rain. Maybe I’ve been lucky, but my positive thoughts win over the problems every time.”
