2013 THAI INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL FAIR

Welcomes Over 200,000 Visitors

Organized by Thai Travel Agents Association (TTAA), the 2013 Thai International Travel Fair running under the theme “Hello Winter”, took place at the Queen Sirikit Convention Center in beautiful downtown Bangkok. The fair ran from August 15 to 18, and over the course of the 4 days the event welcomed over 200,000 visitors, who happily pour through the doors. The TTAA, led by the president Suthipong Pheunphihop, with the co-operation of its partners, including Thai-Amadeus Southeast Asia, Thaivivat Insurance, Kasikorn Bank, Siam Commercial Bank, AEON Thana Sinsap Thailand, and the Tourism Authority of Thailand, successfully put on the massive trade fair which hosted over 500 exhibition booths. The exhibitors were made up of travel agencies from in and outside of Thailand, as well as airlines, hotels, resorts, car rental agencies, and other travel services, all of which offered great deals and special promotions. The thousands and thousands of attendees who visited the fair were mainly looking for travel packages for the up-coming holidays during Thailand’s ‘winter season’. This year’s fair staged – for the first time – a special promotion entitled ‘Buy 1 Tour, Get Free 1 Tour’, in which lucky visitors who spent over 20,000 THB (about USD 620) on a tour package then got another free travel package, hosted by TTAA. In addition, visitors also enjoyed great deals on other tour packages, including discounts of up to USD 120 for tour packages to Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and India, and up to USD 150 for tour packages to the USA. Overall the fair was a roaring success, and it definitely marked itself as another memorable event in the history of Thailand’s numerous travel fairs. 12

Id e a UPDATE The Million Dollar Homepage

An overdraft leads to a million dollar business. Alex Tew, a 21-year-old student in England who was about to begin a business management course and was worried about the student loan he had to repay, came up with the idea of selling the dots that make up the computer screen after asking himself “how can I become a millionaire?” His idea was to sell pixels as advertising space, and so after spending 50 Euros for a domain registration, and basic webhosting package, he launched his idea – www.milliondollarhomepage. com – in 2005. The site’s homepage featured a web banner with the site’s name, a pixel counter displaying number of pixels sold, and an empty square grid of 1,000,000 pixels divided into 10,000 100-pixel blocks. Each pixel cost just a dollar, but the minimum purchase was $100 for a 100-pixel square block that would hold the buyer’s logo, which in turn linked to their website. The first customer was one of Alex’s friends, who operated an online music website, and once the website made it’s first $1000, it received some a mention on the BBC, and after that it quickly became an Internet phenomenon. Fast-forward to 4 months later and the site’s 1,000,000 pixels were sold-out, and Alex had become a million-dollar student. Fast-forward to 4 months later and the site’s 1,000,000 pixels were sold-out, and Alex had become a million-dollar student. He now runs a media company in San Francisco, and his latest internet venture is www.calm.com, a website and app that offers timed relaxation sessions. 16

Get GLAMMED UP with the Latest Trends By Kirati Sachasingh

CONSTRUCTED SLINGS By Nasha Laboratoire

For today’s working woman, carrying more than one bag to work is customary – one for the laptop and paperwork, and another for everyday necessities – but convenience and comfort is key when choosing a bag that is JUST the right size for your wallet, phone, and a petite makeup pouch. Nasha Laboratoire’s Russell Bag, in navy blue or magenta, crafted by our very own Bangkok-based designer Nasha Mekraksavanich, is a stylish pick for this purpose. Easily slung, it’s perfect for those lunchtime breaks when you don’t want to worry about carrying a heavy load. Available at Club 21, and Black Jack stores.

FLORAL PRINTED DRESSES By Dolce & Gabbana The association of florals with this season’s fashion trends is pretty hard to miss. To capture this natural essence, go for brightly coloured floral prints – outlined with graphic lines in earthy tones, or with regal embroidery… the choice is yours. If the regal medieval look interests you, try Dolce & Gabbana’s knee-length dresses, covered with tapestry florals, on a base of white (as seen worn by Sienna Miller). Available at D&G stores, price upon request.

MOTO JEANS By Balmain The Kardashian clan and other fashion icons have been spotted recently wearing Moto jeans, short for ‘motorcycle jeans’. These moto-inspired styles get their edge from their attention grabbling, chic, zipper details, and patchwork stitching. To focus the attention on the denim, pair them with a conservative knit top and solid colored flats – appropriate for casual Fridays at the office – or with a neutral tee, and style with stilettos, for a night-out after work. These low-rise Skinny Moto Jeans from Balmain are ideal for both day and night looks. Prices upon request at Balmain stores.

CUSTOM VARA &VARINA SHOES By Salvatore Ferragamo Having trouble finding work shoes that are both professional and fashionable at the same time? The classic Vara shoes from Salvatore Ferragamo are perfect for everyday work-wear, and you can even customize them to your very own liking. Patent leather material in black, with ruby red bow and heels, is suggested for a timeless classic look. For the casual weekend, opt for a playful Varina flats, customized with a floral print and a turquoise bow. Make a statement with your footwear by adding initials on your soles. The price tag may set you back 18,000 THB or so, but these are the kind of things you won’t regret purchasing years down the line.

18

ECO-WATCHES By Citizen The watch industry is presenting a new set of eco watches that incorporate technological advances, like solar or light energy, plus sustainable material choices, such as wood or cork, and also finds ways of giving back to some of the world’s marginalized communities. Citizen is one such brand, and they celebrate this philosophy with their “watch that never needs a battery”. By harnessing light power from any natural or artificial light source, and converting it into energy stored in cells, the company’s Sky Hawk Eco-drive JY8000-50E titanium model (priced at approx. 60,000 THB) is one of the most advanced and sought after eco-watches currently on the market.

THE WALKING UMBRELLA By Burberry The humble umbrella is making a comeback as the latest “must-have” fashion accessory, and while an erudite walking umbrella is the perfect gentleman’s outdoor accessory, it still has to transform instantly into a hard-working rain umbrella, with durable hinges capable of withstanding wind inversion – a common problem amongst umbrella-users in Bangkok. Burberry’s Nubuck Ostrich Handle Walking Umbrella in college blue (priced at approx. 20,000 THB), is a solid waterproof investment, and is reputed to last a lifetime. Bangkok residents will just be happy they last through the rainy season.

CAMO TROUSERS By Valentino

And once again, the camo trend is back, and Valentino’s relaxed tailoring camouflage trousers are one of the hottest items for spring (there are even waiting lists for them!). Best paired with neutral timeless basics, such as the plain white or black tee, these bottoms are best styled with brown shoes, a pocket square, and/or lapel pins in similar hues. To elevate the look a little bit further, accessorize with studded, or spiked, shoes or belt instead. You can always count on this trend to make a comeback, so invest now and enjoy always.

COLORED REVERSIBLE BELTS By Salvatore Ferragamo A coloured belt is an accessory that can fashionably transform one’s look drastically, but it’s rarely suitable for every occasion. A ‘reversible’ belt, on the other hand, gives one a little fashion flexibility. While the ‘work’ side could be a classic and conservative brown, in a matter of seconds the belt can be reversed to reveal a bright color like magenta or blue – perfect for a night out on the town. Ferragamo’s reversible and adjustable calfskin belts (priced at approx. 14,000 THB) are available in many colors, with your choice of rubberized satin buckles.

Designers: Gabriel Hendifar & Jermy Anderson Brand: Apparatus Studio www.apparatusstudio.com

Product: Cloud Size: Cloud 19 / Cloud 37 The upside down balloon shape named “Cloud” is created using glass frosting techniques, done by hand, which result in a small (Cloud 19) or large (Cloud 37) size cluster of orbs. The theory of light glow was cleverly put to use here by combining three centre light sources that emit a soft glow to the surrounding cluster of orbs. What is evident here is that it’s not just the imagination, but careful experimentation too, that moves Apparatus far beyond the normal scope of lighting. Product: Synapse Size: small / Large Hanging the Synapse in your hallway might be a great option, as it can be a light source and sculpture at the same time. The inspiration – and the name – comes from the mechanics of neural synapses, and the light itself is composed of two hand-molded glass domes that require a 4-Part firing process. Meanwhile a brass orb floats in transit between the two hemispheres.

Apparatus Studio is a New-York based design house specializing in one-of-a-kind lighting solutions, all created by designer Gabriel Hendifar and his partner Jeremy Anderson. Starting from playful experimentation, with vintage lighting components, the company has honed its unique style, and their projects and products have grown significantly over time. In addition, the handicraft methods used in the design stage allow Apparatus to offer an individualized service to meet each client’s needs and specifications.

Product: Triad Light Type: Triad 3, 9, or 15 Here is a great example of a formula that matches science and art. The Triad Light is a study in repeating triangular and conical shapes – either solid brass, or hand-cast porcelain cones – that emit a delicate glow. The result is a warm ambience that is at once a timeworn classic, yet still a thoroughly modern design. 21

Transaction A Contemporary Dance & Theatrical Performance Directed by Dtam Thanapol Virulhakul Show Dates August 15 – 19, 22 – 26, 2013 “We are really sorry. Tonight’s show is cancelled.” This was the message that appeared on one side of the black wall used as a projection screen. The audience, perplexed, turned to look at the repentant performers grouping at the center of the room. Then the mumbling started from within this small square room in Bangkok’s Democrazy Theatre. “Come on, this can’t be happening. I’ve crossed the city just for this!” “Are we getting our ticket money back?” Everyone was grumbling. And while some got annoyed, and others started to move towards the exit, no one seemed to be aware that the play’s first scene had already begun, and that it had just sent one important message across. The message was the introduction to the play’s main idea, which would later be revealed in full as the play continued. You (everyone in this room) are a part of a transaction or trade system. You are irritated because you think of the tickets, time, and travel expense to the theatre as an investment. And now that the show is canceled, your investment has gone wasted. It’s a loss. The play’s English title Transaction, which simply means ‘trade’, is an understatement. However the Thai title poh-niyom, which translates as ‘moderate’ or ‘enough’ makes much more sense, as it’s a direct satire of ‘consumerism’ – the economic and social order in which producers are ever eager for profit, and consumers blindly fall prey to buying products not because they need them, but because they are heavily and skillfully promoted. The play shrewdly pointed out this fact to the audience, yet the question remained: what kind of consumer are you?

Shortly after the initial cancellation announcement, the performers gave envelopes of returned ticket money to each audience member. And, as smoothly as the performers informed us the play was cancelled, they then introduced the first audience participation game. Several games followed, and when one game would finish, the audience had to pay the amount of money the performers had requested, or they could simply make a donation. In this way the audience turned ‘consumers’ who had ‘purchasing power’ which came from the bills in their envelopes (the audience members were categorized by ‘income ranges’ marked by the ticket prices – 499, 599, or 699 THB). The ‘products’ were the games the performers ‘produced’ and encouraged the audience to take part in. The games had the ‘prices’ set by the performers, and came in the form of stories, or dramas, 22

that the performers conjured up. Prices were sometimes too high, and the audience ‘negotiated’ if they felt they were being ripped off. And every once in a while the bills collected from the audience would be folded and put in a plastic box placed high up near the ceiling, at an unreachable distance, signifying a ‘savings account’ (meaning no withdrawals). Throughout the evening’s 2-hour performance the games continued, and the audience enjoyed the give and take. It was like a circle that could have gone on forever. Consumerism thrives on mankind’s endless desires. Producers always come up with new toys and the consumers, loving to be satisfied, always pay the price, as long as they have purchasing power. Suddenly the dimly lit room became very bright, and Dtam Thanapol Virulhakul, the show’s director, came out and announced,

“Honestly, I’m bankrupted doing this show. Please, donate to help us out.” But when the audience looked into their envelopes, most found them empty. The question of ‘what kind of consumer are you?’ had been answered – either blind spender, moderate spender, or stingy skinflint. As the crowd started to leave, the performers stood at the door smiling, saying good-bye, and thanking the crowd for their attendance – donation boxes held forth. And if anyone in attendance felt they were now broke, they might want to think again about the show’s title… ‘poh-niyom’ For news on up-coming shows, check out Bangkok Theatre Network, Democrazy Theatre Studio, and B-floor Facebook pages.

A Fresh Take on Trash Reduces “Waste” and Renews “Think”

From seemingly worthless objects, found in piles of trash, 6 artists have given these salvaged objects a revival by creating unique works of art, which in turn represent another chapter in mankind’s history of recycling. Presented by the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), the show also includes some artworks that are not revived, but instead the artworks themselves revive, improve, treat, and restore the artist’s feelings, sufferings and even some old mental scars. It’s a timely exhibit and sure to provoke much discussion. BACC - Main Gallery, 7th floor September 14 – November 17, 2013 Opening reception on September 26, 2013 www.bacc.or.th

Dr. Satit Viddayakorn 26

THE

BOLDNESS OF

INNOVATION

During the Asian financial crisis, many hospitals were struggling to keep their heads above water. To stay afloat amid harsh economic conditions and rising foreign competition from Singapore, Malaysia, and India, Thai hospitals scrambled to push their innovative edge. Among those that were able to weather the storm was Bangkok Hospital, which expanded rapidly despite increasing difficulties during the crisis. A big part of the success, however, is the work of a man with no medical background, but an engineering graduate who understands the power of IT, innovation, and the value of investing in people. In this issue of MeTRO, we sat down with Dr. Satit Viddayakorn to better understand the man behind the success of this medical empire and the insights that guided him in his life and business decisions. A glance through his credentials would reveal that this business tycoon is a person of impressive calibre. A planning and management strategist who has built over 10 hospitals equipped with cutting-edge IT systems, Dr. Satit is no ordinary “engineer”. Having graduated Mechanical Engineering from Chulalongkorn University, Dr. Satit holds three other degrees in Management, Human Resource Management, and Business Administration (Ph.D.), as well as multiple diplomas from Sasin Graduate Institute of Business Administration and Harvard University. However, as a child, he was not as studious. On multiple occasions, Dr. Satit recalls that his parents would be ecstatic if he scored above 50% on his exams. Inspired by his parents’ work ethic, he took his studies more seriously and followed his father’s footsteps into the medical industry. He did not become a medical professional, but was entrusted to manage the hospital, a path that would later catapult him to become the Vice President of the BHG. What helped propel his career was the love for technology he developed at an early age. He believed that the use of IT was crucial to the success of any business, and that it would “revolutionize” the previously “old-fashioned” hospital system he was now managing. And revolutionize it, it did. Under his management, he introduced multiple innovations, such as the Hospital Information System, which made important information available across all departments in real time. This made it easier for the hospital to manage their medical inventory as well as deliver faster and more efficient services to patients. In a time when medical prescriptions were made on paper, and the speed of hospital services depended on how fit nurses were, convenience was the competitive edge. With this innovation, prescription orders were being prepared as soon as the patient left the doctor’s office. Aside from technology, Dr. Satit says that the formula for growth and success is having a clear direction and a quality pool of human resource to carry it out. It was very clear that to him, business growth is not just corporate, but should also be personal. In other words, corporate goals and personal goals should be aligned. He takes this principle to heart as a guide to his personal life. “Never stop educating yourself,” he says, while recounting his decisions in the past to continue his studies from one degree to another, as well those short courses to which committed himself. It is perhaps this intimate understanding of the value of personal growth that guides his management decisions.

27

The philosophy of management, he says, is to “grow the business together with the people… I would create opportunities for my employees to take initiatives, and support those who took them.” It is this belief that has helped him create a strong team that serves as the foundation of the business. Currently, Dr. Satit teaches at ABAC, Bangkok University, and Chulalongkorn University. “Teaching keeps [me] updated,” he says. While he spends considerable time in the academe, he readily admits that management is hardly purely scientific. It is also about personal relationships, and when asked how he builds his management team he explains, “There are many theories and approaches, but it boils down to trust.” Trust is a concept that is all too familiar to him. As a fresh graduate of engineering school, and after having received an MBA in management, he worked as an engineering supervisor for ESSO, at an oil refinery in Sriracha. Shortly after, he was entrusted by his father, Dr. Pongsak Viddayakorn, to oversee the complete construction and expansion of a new Bangkok hospital in Pattaya, a medical facility which now boasts a 400-bed capacity and services over a thousand people everyday.

For the next 20 years, Dr. Satit would be at the forefront of innovation – ‘architecting’ his career from the ground up by successfully managing multiple branches of Bangkok hospitals around Thailand. Trust was an important component that kickstarted his career, and he intends to pass it on to others who were equally willing and able to deliver the results. Later on, it would be this trust he has developed for his team that would allow him to leave the Bangkok Hospital Group with the comfort in believing that it is now in good hands. As an innovator, Dr. Satit understands that growth is never a static concept. “Be a vanguard of innovation,” he says, “and not just a ‘business owner’.” It’s a matter of striking that delicate balance between having enough determination to stick to a clearly

imposed direction, and being brave enough to still be open to innovation. Because of this, he says it is important to keep focused. “Sometimes I visit the temple because it helps me learn to capture my thoughts, and control my emotions.” However there’s no attempt to underplay this difficulty while making the case for entrepreneurship. “If there are 100 people, only 2 will see the opportunity,” he muses. “Only one will take action, and only half the time will they become successful. So out of 100 people, only 0.5% will make it”. When asked what advice he would give his younger self, he admits it would be “to start [my] own business earlier, because starting earlier would allow [me] to learn from experience faster. I might fail 80% of the time, but I would learn from my mistakes, and this experience would open doors in the future.” But he concedes that this need not be the path for everyone. “Look for opportunities to grow in, and with, your organization” he advises.

Today, Dr. Satit has ventured into real estate, where he is now the CEO of Principal Capital Co. Ltd., and he is eager to use innovation to propel himself, and others, up to the top in this highly competitive industry. But business never stops for an entrepreneur who always seizes opportunities. As was the case when he started, this “vanguard of innovation” is determined to push the envelope in several other industries, whether it be IT, publishing, or in foreign markets. His doors are big, and they are open. And while not everyone may be a multi-billion THB investor, what this maverick has demonstrated is that success is a creative process that involves the discipline to stay on course, the drive for personal growth, and the boldness to innovate.

CHARINYA

Youngprapakorn

Treading Balanced Path for the Best of Both Worlds

On the 46th floor of the CRC Tower, on Wireless Rd, sits the office of a woman who is at the top of her game. As Associate Director of CB Richard Ellis (Thailand) Co., Ltd., Khun Charinya Youngprapakorn is a top-notch property professional whose work has led to real estate sales worth billions of Baht. But in one of the world’s most stressful industries, this talented and determined woman manages to lead an enviable, balanced, and purposeful life.

Every new project is like a new set of puzzles. You always learn new things when solving it. What important is that you must have genuine interest in what you do, be curious, and work together as a team.

30

Known intimately as “Jib” to friends and family, Khun Charinya heads the Marketing Services division at CBRE, and is responsible for the marketing and sale of over 30 high-end property projects in Bangkok, Pattaya, Hua Hin, Kao Yai, Chiang Mai, and Phuket, in Thailand, as well as in London, in the UK. To state the obvious, this is no easy task. But Khun Jib is no regular Jane. In 2011 she was awarded the CBRE Asia Circle of Excellence and the CBRE Thailand Circle of Excellence, an accolade only given to leading property professionals within the company. When asked how she manages to pull it all together, she admits that the secret is in strategizing with the team. “Our team is actually quite small, so it’s very important to empower every single member to be strong and independent decision makers,” she muses. “However, at the end of the day, the services we give to our customers have to be the result of the group’s discussions. With all these projects happening at the

same time, coordination is absolutely essential.” Professional as she may be, Khun Jib also tells us that her team members are like her second family. “We are like brothers and sisters,” she says, “we help each other out and are open about what we think. At CBRE, we are like one big family.” Perhaps it’s this intimate and personal working environment that tempers the stress of this fast-paced industry. At only 35 years of age, Khun Charinya is both the mother of a 5-year-old son, as well as a loving wife to her husband. Like many talented young working mothers, her challenge is getting the best of both worlds. “You’ve got to be very good at time management,” she advises. She tells us that she would try to get all her works done as soon as possible, and will not take any work home. “After work, it’s all family time,’ she states.

As her working time is quite uncontrollable, she tries to drive her son to school every morning to spend time with him every day. On some of her working weekends with property exhibitions and events, she occasionally takes her husband and son along - so they understand the nature of her job. “I am lucky that my husband and my son are understanding.” By comparison, non-working days and weekends are especially precious. “Sometimes we’ll take short trips to nearby provinces like Hua Hin or Pattaya, to relax and unwind,” she says. “When we don’t, we eat out, go to the movies, or simply stay home reading books to the kid. The point is to spend quality time with family.” But being family-oriented doesn’t mean this go-getter allows her work to slide either. Instead of being discouraged by the huge swath of work that comes her way, she is energized by it because of her positive outlook. “Every new project is like a new set of puzzles,” she says. “You always learn new things when solving it. What’s important is that you must have genuine interest in what you do, be curious, and work together as a team.” It should come as no surprise that in the world of high-rise condominiums and premium properties, professionals like Khun Charinya don’t have the luxury of time. But it is in pressing conditions such as this that she finds her balance. Being a successful professional in her team, a caring mother to her son, and a loving wife to her husband, Khun Jib shows us that success is partly the result of team effort and a personal drive that settles for nothing less than the best of both worlds.

BUILDING

A HOME

AWAY FROM HOME I will not ask anyone to do a job that I’m not prepared to do myself. Take care of your staff, and they’ll take care of your guests. Whether you are an executive traveling on a business trip away from home, or a local yearning for an exquisite dining experience, Sathorn Vista, Bangkok – Marriott Executive Apartments is the place for you. Located at the footstep of embassies, shopping centers, and the BTS sky train, this 5-star hotel allows guests to fully experience the dynamism of a bustling metropolis, while at the same time being immersed in the serenity and comfort of their home. What is intriguing about this hotel is that it is actually many things. To long-stay expats and business executives, it can be an amazing fully furnished apartment suite. To others, it is a full service hotel that stacks up against Bangkok’s finest. And to avid foodies, Sathorn Vista is the place to go for mouth-savoring dishes of fine international cuisine at its signature MoMo Café. HOME AWAY FROM HOME Regardless of why you choose to come, General Manager Daryn Hudson says it is a “great experience” you are sure to find. This is because at Marriott, it is the attention paid to each and every guest that matters. At the core of it, Daryn explains that it is not all about the numbers. It is about “building relationships with guests” and understanding their likes and dislikes. For returning long-stay guests in apartment suites, Marriott makes a great effort in putting thought into the smallest of things, from remembering the kind of pillows they like, to finding ways to accommodate their pets. Guests can also add their own personal touch to the rooms, whether it is by bringing in their own furniture or decorating it with their own pictures and objects of sentimental value. “It’s important we

tailor-make the experience,” says Daryn, “because [our guests] don’t just stay here, they live here. It’s their home away from home”. Being a family man, Daryn knows well what this means. He tells MeTRO that without the support of his wife and daughter, he wouldn’t have come this far. Smiling, he recounts moments when his lovely daughter would run to hug him after his day at work. “It’s these moments that are the happiest in my life,” he says. It is this warmth that he wants to recreate at Marriott. THE TEAM To deliver this great experience, this GM treats his staff with the same level of respect and understanding he gives to his customers. “I treat everyone as my equal,” he says. “I will not ask anyone to do a job that I’m not prepared to do myself.” Being in the hospitality industry in multiple countries for over 20 years, a culturally diverse working environment is nothing new. But as an Australian living in Thailand, Daryn admits that he finds the language barrier a challenge to communicating with his team. Overcoming this, Daryn says, “What I’ve learned here is that I need to get people to know and trust me, so that they know they can speak up.” While his attention to detail is second to none, Daryn doesn’t micro-manage. “I want [my staff] to think outside of the box, and go out to find solutions,” he says. As a General Manager, Daryn reveals that there are two key elements to managing his team: 1) developing their skills, and 2) listening to their needs and finding ways to help them. This way, he points out, will make them want to stay in the organization.

Interestingly, however, Daryn says that turnovers don’t always have to be bad. As he explains, his work with the staff also involves helping them to grow and advance to higher positions; and if those higher positions aren’t available in Sathorn Vista, he takes it upon himself to find them a job in one of Marriott’s other properties. “Turnovers aren’t really ‘turnovers’,” he says. “They’re positively moving [employees] from one hotel to a better position in another Marriott hotel”. THE PHILOSOPHY It is the firm belief in caring for people that has driven him to work at Marriott. He tells us that he received the inspiration from Bill Marriott, Executive Chairman of Marriott International, who said, “Take care of your staff, and they’ll take care of your guests.” “When you are in a more senior management position, you want to work in a place that aligns its core values with your own,” he explains. “That’s when you’ll be happy with your work.” “A GREAT EXPERIENCE” Happiness is the promise that every business in the hospitality industry makes to its customers, and it is indeed a sheer bliss when one gets it right. But the secret, it seems, is that happiness has to go full circle—from the hotel manager, to the staff, and to the customers. Daryn has shown that for a hotel to provide a “great experience”, it has to build great relationships not only with its customers, but also with its own staff. After all, Marriot is the “home away from home”.

Metro MONEY

By Aunyapach Jirapattaroj

Basic

Personal

Have you ever heard people say “Money is not the most important thing in the world because it cannot make me happy”, or “I just choose to do what I like to do regardless of how much money I get paid”? Well, I could not agree more that having a lot of money is not going to make you happy, but it helps!

Finance

Perspectives on money, vary depending on how people are raised, which books they read, and who they met, etc. In turn this influences how one determines the ‘essence’ of money. And anyone wanting to acquire more money should be aware that although there’s no magic formula regarding investment techniques that will guarantee you’ll become a billionaire, there are many practical ideas concerning personal financial management that can help get you closer to your goal.

- How do you see yourself in next 5 years? - What do you want to have in next 5 years? - Can what you are doing today, get you what you want in the next 5 years (and if not, what should you do in order to get it)?

Year 1: you will have 660,000 THB (600,000 plus 60,000 interest) Year 2: you will have 1.386 million THB (10% of 660,000 = 720,000 plus 660,000 from saving in year 2) Year 5: using the same technique, you should now have just over 4 million THB.

Let’s take some time to answer these 3 questions,

Suppose you want to have a 4 million THB house in 5 years. You earn an income of 100,000 THB a month and you can save 50,000 THB. Simple math, 50,000 THB times 12 months equals to 600,000 THB in a year. So, in next five years, you will have 3 million THB, which is not enough to get your dreamed house. What if you invest your saving of 50,000 THB a month in a stock that gives you 10% a year? What will happen in next 5 years?

Personal finance can be easy when you know what your want. Remember that the average person usually pays others before paying themselves. What this means is this at the end of the month, you routinely use your salary to first pay your bills, and then whatever you have left, you save. That is why many of us are investing our time, our intelligence, and even our health, into fulfilling other people’s dreams instead of our own. Invest in your own future as diligently as you contribute to making the owner of your cell phone company rich.

34

Let’s see:

Impressive isn’t it? What you’ve just seen, in the example above, is called the power of compound interest, in which you see how your money can grow by itself – providing you know where to put it.

ROBOTIC HAIR TRANSPLANT THE NEWEST TECHNOLOGY If you’re looking to restore your lost or thinning hair, there’s a brand new technology available, which might be suitable for you. However it’s best to first identify the cause of your hair loss, secondly discuss with your doctor the results you’re expecting from any treatment, and then weigh your options. WHAT WERE THE PREVIOUSLY AVAILABLE HAIR RESTORATION OPTIONS? Quite a few treatment options can help promote hair growth. Protein based vitamin hair-loss serums are high in concentrations of botanical extracts, natural antioxidants, naturally occurring vitamins and enzymes, all of which which help improve the appearance of the hair and stimulate hair growth, making it thicker and fuller. If these methods don’t work, then topical medication like Minoxidil may help to slow down the hair fall-out rate. Meso-therapy, on the other hand, is an even more effective hair restoration technique, and this procedure involves injecting growth factors and poly-vitamins directly under the scalp. It only takes about 30 minutes per sitting, and you may require getting it done once a week for about 6 or 7 weeks, followed by maintenance treatments, but the results are quite noticeable. Then there’s the option of cell therapy, in which blood is removed from the patient and put into a spinning centrifuge, and from this an activation solution, made up of natural proteins, is added to ‘turn on’ the stem cells. This solution is then rinsed off so that only the stem cells remain, to be used to directly inject into the dermis of the scalp, near the hair follicle and supporting tissue. This method is believed to stimulate hair growth but there is no solid medical evidence to support it. Finally, if none of the above works, patients can opt for the surgical option, and get a hair transplant. HOW IS A HAIR TRANSPLANT PERFORMED? Before the Robotic Hair Transplant got an FDA approval, people relied on traditional hair transplants, in which hair follicle units are inserted into the scalp, in the thinning or bald area, using a micro blade. This procedure can increase hair density in thinning areas by as many as 40 to 60 follicular unit grafts per square centimeter. HOW IS THE NEW ROBOTIC HAIR TRANSPLANT TECHNOLOGY BETTER? When performing a follicle unit extraction, removing units of hair from the patient has always proven to be the toughest part of the procedure. It can take several hours, or even multiple sessions, to punch out enough tiny follicle units needed for a natural looking hair transplant. Another problem is that it is very difficult to correctly place the follicular unit graft in the recipient area to give a natural appearance. However the robot changes all this. It has an arm that is able to insert the follicular unit onto a scalp more accurately, using better quality of hair, resulting in a more natural growth. Of course, how the transplant will ultimately look still depends on the expertise of your doctor. Other advantages of this new technology are that it is the least invasive surgery of its kind, meaning there are no scalpel incisions, sutures or linear scars, making it a surgery with less pain and the fastest recovery time. Patients can go back to work the very next day. Also, since no scars are involved, you don’t need to worry about the tightening and pain on the scar area. So if you’re suffering from hair that’s barely there, this new and unique technology might be just the thing for you.

Continuous Business Growth

The condominium market in Thailand keeps growing, and Knight Frank Chartered (Thailand) Co. Ltd., a well-known property advisor, revealed that in 2012 the number of newly launched units was 61,462, compared with 41,167 units in 2011. As for Bangkok, the Real Estate Information Center revealed that the condominium market in Bangkok has increased 11%, and the number of newly launched units in the first half of 2013 was 28,637. It’s all just evidence of a seemingly unstoppable condominium market growth – in fact the 8 biggest real estate companies revealed that their total sales revenues for the first half of 2013 totaled more than 108,000 million THB.

What do Bangkok’s urbanites really need? Apart from a good job, a cozy home, and a great relationship, most people want something to inspire them, and really fit with their urban lifestyles. Five years ago, most people spent their leisure time watching television, on the internet, or strolling through indoor department stores. Nowadays we can see more and more people trying to express and communicate their lifestyles via their activities, or the places they go, or the things they choose to spend their time on. As trends emerge, and new kinds of businesses spring up both in Bangkok, and in other major city centers, we can chart these trends and possibly predict where more growth will occur. Here then is a review of what is currently “trending” in our own backyard.

Vertical Living Trend

With a population of almost 7.79 million registered (and estimates of more than 3 million unregistered), the city of Bangkok – with the area of just 1,569 km2 – definitely qualifies as a high-density area. No surprise then that “vertical living” is the perfect choice for the new urban lifestyle, but it’s more than just a matter of a massive population living on limited area of land. The real thing here is lifestyle – locations and facilities that meet people’s need while simultaneously being convenient, healthy, secure, stylish, private, etc. – and each project then tries to find its own best, unique, or surprising features in order to capture a different targeted buyer.

• Shopping Trends The shift away from huge indoor department stores, and towards the more recent concept of the “community mall”, has literally exploded across Bangkok, with K Village (opened in 2010) leading the pack. Fast forward to 2013 and the list of community malls seems endless: Rain Hill, City Viva, Park Lane, The Nine, Crystal Design Center, The Circle, Portico, SENA Fest, The Eight Thonglor, La Villa, Aree Garden, Seen Space, The Crystal, The INT Intersect, Festival Walk, not to mention the recently launched and highly successful Asiatique The Riverfront. And soon to be added to this list are upcoming projects such as Zy Walk, The Up Rama 3, and W-District. Research studies predict that we can expect to see more hypergrowth in this sector in the foreseeable future. Customers enjoy the “friendliness” these malls project, and unlike many local stores with no parking lot, visitors to community malls can park their cars with convenience and security. Another common characteristic is the “open air” aspect, as many of the most successful community malls have outdoor circulation areas.

Featured Mall Asiatique The Riverfront – Chill Out in Style by the Restored East Asiatic Pier Back in the 1900s, the construction of East Asiatic Pier, on Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River, signaled the beginning of international trade between the Kingdom of Siam (the former name of Thailand) and the most powerful European nations of the day. It was the key to Siam maintaining the sovereignty and independence it enjoyed throughout the 20th century. Today, this same area has been restored to its original glory as Asiatique The Riverfront, with more than 1,500 stores to welcome tourists and locals alike. It is the first, and the biggest, lifestyle project undertaken on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, and the incorporation of authentic architecture (circa 1907 – 1947) harkens back to the magnificence of the early 1900s, and in particular the reign of King Rama the 5th (Colonial Period). Apart from the lively shopping available, the Joe Louis Puppet Theater and the Calypso Bangkok Theater are great places to catch live performances. Meanwhile, more than 40 bars and restaurants are on hand for dining out and socializing. With 12 acres already developed and operating, as part of the current phase, no doubt the upcoming 2nd phase – on the other side of the river – will prove just as successful. Every month Asiatique seems to get more and more popular, with unbelievable crowds even on days that aren’t holidays or special occasions! www.thaiasiatique.com

• Working Trends Working non-traditional office hours is certainly trending here in Bangkok. More and more people are getting into the so-called “freelance industry”, and many are also joining and forming “startups”. And unlike big enterprises, established with huge investing capital, many people in these groups spend their working hours in coffee shops, utilizing the free Wi-Fi. So what kind of working space do people really need? How about a “co-working” space – a more inspiring environment – with convenient facilities and valuable resources, where knowledge and connections are provided? Sharing is the real trend behind the co-working movement, and we’ve seen the number of coworking spaces in the city increase from zero in 2011, to at least 10 within 2013. Members of co-working spaces find their productivity and creativity increases, while at the same time business and friend circles grow rapidly, professional skills increase, and they are healthier physically and mentally. However, the most important benefit might just be the ‘serendipity’ factor, because co-working facilitates the “unexpected relevant encounter” that can often help take professional careers to the next level, or turn dream

Brompton

• Commuting Trends For those city dwellers who can afford it, owning a car is a luxury that is often viewed as a necessity. A car offers more conveniences and comforts – they don’t have to press themselves and their heavy belongings into a crowded public transport system – and for many people their residential area is not serviced by the public transport system, so their only options are taxis, or other pay-as-you-go vehicles. Besides, getting stuck in traffic in your own private car is more enjoyable than the same situation on a public bus. And even though there are more and more public transportation projects planned, and under construction, we still need to think about “now”. Do we really want to put up with gridlock traffic if we have a better choice? One better choice available is the humble bicycle, and it’s plain to see that the biking trend has taken off rapidly in the past few years. Bikers, bike shops, bike festivals, bike magazines, bike markets and even bike cafés are sprouting up all over Bangkok. Many campaigns related to the burgeoning biking trend are also underway, including the BKK Bike Lane campaign, Save Our Cyclists, Why Ride?, Cycling Share, etc.

• Do-Gooder Trends “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” - Chinese Proverb The new and emerging trend of doing good is not just a matter of “charity” anymore. Many people dream of being “Change Makers”, creating positive social impact and social change, and there is now a social innovation model called Social Enterprise (SE), who’s core goals go totally toward social good, but who still operate within business models in order to have their own sustainable financing. If one organization totally relied on another’s money and donations, what would happen if people stop donating? The Chinese proverb above spells it out clearly and eloquently.

Plajapian With their main goal being aiding and developing the capabilities of local peoples, Plajapian is a social enterprise in Thailand that connects the producers to the markets, while following the key principles of sustainability and fair-trade. The company’s working model is to work together, as a friend, with the local producers, and not position themselves as a high helper. The connection of the markets to local peoples is not only about the revenue, but also the crucial point of telling the “story” of these hard-working rural people to interested urbanites. www.plajapian.org Plajapian

Over the past few years, in Thailand, the Thai Social Enterprise Office (TSEO), has been growing in stature, and its mission is to create social enterprise culture by creating strong ecosystems, using design thinking and social innovation. And it seems to be working.

Urbie URBIE is a social enterprise that buys chemical-free agricultural output, mostly vegetables, from farmers at fair trade prices. They believe that they can create an alternative channel that is more fair to the farmers, and could encourage more farmers to adopt organic farming practices, which is not only good for the health of everyone (including the farmers), but is also good for the environment.

Urbie

By transforming this agricultural output into ready-to-eat produce, beverages, or snacks, in order to add value to the products, it’s just one more way to encourage people to eat more vegetables and become healthier, and make fresh food a part of the modern urban lifestyle. www.facebook.com/UrbieThailand

Young Ciz Young Citizen (aka: Young Ciz), is a social enterprise whose product is organic rice – distributed under the brand name ‘Kao Hom Suk’. The group has been convincing farmers to grow rice organically, not only to increase their productivity and reduce their costs, but more importantly to protect the health of the farmers and the consumers themselves, and to reduce environmental destruction. They also buy rice from farmers, at fair trade prices, and, in turn, when customers buy one bag of Kao Hom Suk rice, Young Citizen will donate another bag to underprivileged children in Chiang Rai. So one bag of rice reaches at least 2 bellies. www.facebook.com/YoungCiz

Metro TRIP Globetrotting in Style

Belgium: By Veena Cute-ngarmpring and Bruce Scott

Dynamic, Diverse & Delicious

Brussels Brussels (or Bruxelles in French) is the capital city of Belgium and home to the European Union parliament, as well as most of the EU’s administrative buildings. The city’s bustling downtown area is home to one of the most beautiful central squares in Europe – the famous Grand Palace – where visitors are surrounded by Baroque, Gothic and Neo-Gothic architecture, including guildhalls, “Brussels Town Hall” the Town Hall building, and the Maison du Roi (or ‘King’s House’). Just a short walk from the Grand Palace, at the Corner of Rue de l’Etuve and Rue du Chene, you can meet the little boy who attracts tourists from all over the world, all of whom want their photo taken with him. Yes, we are talking about MannekenPis, the 400-year-old bronze fountain sculpture of a peeing boy. Don’t miss seeing how cute he is, especially when he’s wearing one his many costumes (the statue is dressed in a variety of amusing outfits several times each week). Then, when hunger strikes, grab a famous Belgian waffle – topped with fresh strawberries and chocolate sauce – from one of the many waffle shops located in this area.

46

Belgium is a quiet and unobtrusive country that often takes a back seat to its more flamboyant European neighbours – it shares borders with France, Germany and The Netherlands – however that doesn’t mean it is any less interesting. In fact some of Europe’s most well preserved medieval architecture can be found here. And when it comes to food and drink, this is a nation that has elevated beer-making and French fries to a whole new level.

Another attraction is the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula, a Roman Catholic church that sits atop Treurenburg Hill. The cathedral is named after archangel St. Michael, and the martyr St. Gudula, the patron saints of the city of Brussels. Inside the cathedral, prepare to be mesmerized by the Gothic columns and arches, as well as colorful stained glass windows. Another stately attraction is the Royal Palace of the Belgian monarchy, where court ceremonies, royal audiences, and state receptions are held. After sightseeing, enjoy a little window-shopping at The Royal SaintHubert Galleries, a shopping arcade under an arched glass roof. The arcade is divided into the King’s gallery and the Queen’s gallery, and here you can find variety of luxury goods from a high-end boutiques, as well as precious jewelry, fine chocolates and elegantly decorated restaurants and cafés. Before leaving town, don’t forget to recharge your batteries with some ‘mussels from Brussels’. These tasty shellfish are served in huge bowls, cooked with a variety of seasonings and sauces, and are usually paired with Belgium’s infamous French fries (the dish is known as Moules-frites in French). Finally, for the sweet tooth, renowned brand name chocolate shops, such as Godiva and Neuhaus, can easily be found all over the city. Saint-Hubert Galleries

Brugge Since Belgium is a relatively small country, visiting several places in one trip is easily done, and Brugge – also known as Bruges, in French – is a perfectly preserved medieval city (and UNESCO heritage site) that should definitely not be missed. From the moment you arrive in Brugge you will be immersed in the historic Flemish atmosphere and architecture, and you can start your exploration in the city’s historical central square, known as Market Hall, where you’ll be surrounded by such notable structures as City Hall, The Provincial Court, and the Groeningemuseum. Nearby, the lofty medieval bell tower known as The Belfry (or Belfort) of Bruges serves as the symbolic centre of the city.

View from The Belfry, Brugge

Next to the Belfry, you’ll find the grand entrance to the 12th-century Roman Catholic Basilica of the Holy Blood, where the interior is separated into lower and upper chapels. In the lower chapel

Canal Trip, Brugge is a small dimly lit sacred Romanesque structure dedicated to St. Basil the Great, while in the upper level houses the Chapel of the Holy Blood, originally built in Romanesque style, but later transformed to Gothic. Chief among the mesmerizing decorations and artifacts is the ‘Relic of the Precious Blood’, a holy phial containing a cloth with the blood of Jesus Christ. Besides the market hall area, The Church of Our Lady is worth a visit – standing over 122 meters high it’s one of the tallest brick buildings in the world – and the BonneChière Windmill is another picturesque spot. However almost all of Brugge is visually stunning, and since it’s a small city it’s easy to explore on foot in a single day. Alternatively, you can take one of the many tourist boats that travel along the Groenerei (canals) throughout the city. Like Venice, in Italy, Brugge is a city teeming with grand canals and charming bridges.

Antwerp Located about an hour’s drive north of Brussels, the bustling city of Antwerp is a great place to experience modern and medieval Belgium co-existing side by side. For a taste of the historic, start your trip at Grote Markt, in the old city, where ornate 16th-century Guildhouses surround a central square that includes a statue of Peter Paul Rubens (the city’s most famous former resident) and the grand gothic Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kathedraal (Cathedral of our Lady), a masterpiece of stonework that dates back to the 1300s. Travelling the old city area by foot is the best way to experience the winding cobblestone streets, the historic houses and shops, and the many churches and cathedrals. For a more contemporary feel, drop in on the Museum aan de Stroom (MAS), a magnificent modern art museum in the Eilandje district, near the river. The building

stands 60 m high, and the open-air rooftop is a great place to get a panoramic view of the city. Afterwards, take a scenic walk down the pedestrian-friendly Meir – the main shopping street in the city – where high-end designer shops occupy the ground floors of spectacular Barouqueera buildings. The street stretches all the way from the Town Hall to the magnificent Central Train Station, which is also the area known as the ‘Diamond District’, home to Antwerp’s legendary community of Jewish diamond merchants. And, of course, no trip to Antwerp would be complete without a thorough sampling of some of Belgium’s best beer. There are countless pubs and alehouses throughout the city, some dating back hundreds of years, and the variety of delicious (and potent) brews on tap is as diverse as the city itself.

If you’re looking to explore a city with a more French environment, then Liège – a peaceful outpost on the Meuse River – is a great option. Historically the city is the birthplace of King Charlemagne, and it was also once a major industrial centre for steel. The city is located about 1-hour by train from Brussels, and visitors arriving at the LiègeGuillemins train station are welcomed with an astonishing, and thoroughly modern, designed building. This train station is regarded as one of the most beautiful in all of Europe. The city itself is home to such historic and iconic buildings as The Prince-Bishops’ Palace – the Episcopal Palace of Liège, which nowadays serves as the provincial government house and law court – as well as the beautiful Pont de Fragnée bridge, the Liège Cathedral, and the Statue of Charlemagne.

THE

Origins OF

Social

ENTERPRISE

You may have recently heard the term ‘social enterprise,’ which has fast become a hot topic in Bangkok as of late. And in case you don’t know what it means, a social enterprise is a business with a mission to create positive social or environmental impact. A well-known example is TOMS Shoes, a social enterprise that started in the United States. TOMS gives away one pair of shoes to an impoverished child for every pair of shoes a customer buys. Pretty cool, don’t you think? The beauty of a social enterprise lies in how it enables e n t re p re n e u r s , i n v e s t o r s , and their staff to pursue the advantages of commerce, in harmony with their intentions of making a positive impact on their community, society, or environment. As Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give”. How wonderful it would be if we could do both at the same time.

With global economies in peril, and our planet in trouble due to unsustainable practices and policies, people have started to search out new solutions. Some have not had to look far, for they recognized that the dire conditions they faced could serve as the very solution they sought. Indeed, these critical conditions are what have often served as the fertilizer that has enabled social enterprises to blossom around the globe. A social enterprise runs a commercial operation like other businesses, but with a social intention, like social organizations. Synergistically integrated, social enterprises combine the best of both models: self-sustainability and the potential for growth, along with creating positive social impact. Social enterprises give people the choice to move towards conscious consumerism and to vote with their money for a creative economy that operates for the good of all people.

MOMO Café @Sathorn Vista, Bangkok - Marriott Executive Apartments 1 Sathorn Soi 3, South Sathorn Rd Call: 02 343 6789

Working in Sathorn and Narathiwas area can be hectic, and despite being heavily populated with office professionals there doesn’t seem to be many places one can drop by for a quick bite to eat. However there is hope. Moderately quiet, with a fairly relaxing vibe – a few tables were occupied with working men and a couple of hotel guests – MOMO Café is an ideal place to take your mind off things, and dig into the vast variety of their “around the world” menu. From papaya salads to burgers, the menu offers dishes to placate every palette. And although I wouldn’t say it was the best meal I’ve ever had, I was particularly impressed with the mix of the selections on offer. If you’re searching for something more out of the ordinary, MOMO presents a special menu of ‘North American Food Adventures’. It’s easy to forget sometimes that North America contains many diverse cultures, with influences from French to Mexican, and all the items on this special menu certainly appeared tempting (in particular the Brandy Australian Wagyu and the Tex-Mex pork chop). So if you’re nearby, be sure to give this place a try, and you may be surprised to find yourself making several return visits. And you won’t be in danger of getting bored with the selection since everything on the menu is constantly changing every 2 months, making this “routine” lunch spot something exciting to look forward to!

The set lunch menu changes daily throughout the week, offering a choice of 2 selections – an Asian and a European dish – and at only 250 THB, you can enjoy these large portions alongside goodies from the café’s remarkable and extensive salad bar.

SURFACE @ 107 Soi Sukhumvit 53 (Thonglor Soi 11) Call: 02 258 2858 Mon-Thu: 6pm-12am Fri-Sun: 11:30am-2pm; 6pm-12am Chef Chalee Kader truly exemplifies his passion for, and creativity with, the cuisine of Southern France – from southern enthused “bistronomy” to molecular mixology. Highly regarded by his colleagues, Chef Chalee loves experimenting, and offers the most diverse and distinct culinary creations that can only be discovered at Surface restaurant, where they are presented in the simplest form, yet deliver the finest of tastes. The restaurant is a bit difficult to find – the main entrance is at the rear of a large parking lot at the dead end of Thonglor Soi 11, and only accessible by foot – but Surface is definitely a place for dedicated “foodies”. Most visitors would have heard of it by word-of-mouth, and walk-ins would be extremely rare. But there’s no snobbery here, and with its casual homey décor, and large outdoor garden space, you can be sure to feel comfortable.

Highly recommended… The food looked and tasted incredible, when I made it to the pan seared Foie Gras with Pomelo, shallots and Hoisin sauce it was absolutely fantastic, especially with the combination of the drenched yet crunchy crouton, which exploded flavour everywhere inside my mouth. My second recommendation… This without doubt would have to be the panroasted grass-fed tenderloin, served on a bed of truffle risotto and black trumpet sauce. Anyone who is still confused about what the “Umami” effect is about – this dish is exactly what it is. The combination of the perfectly cooked Australian tenderloin, combined with the aromatic truffles in the risotto, really intensifies the flavor with a bang.

Surface is unquestionably one of the places to seek out if you are serious about your food. The mix of outstanding food and cocktails, deep house playing in the background, and an abundance of good-looking fellow customers, makes this a place you will want to spend many a night.

A nongnart Amnueypol Beauty, Brains and Bravado

As beautiful as she is bright, Khun Anongnart Amnueypol (or Khun Mimi) is the PR Manager of PCI & YSL for L’Oréal Thailand, and while she and her team promote the famous cosmetic brand in the traditional forums of print and television, they also work a full 360 degrees of communications in other ways, including below the line, above the line, online media, customer relation management (CRM), integrated marketing communication (IMC), and more. She dedicates herself to her work – with great passion – and since her background is fully rooted in fashion, beauty, arts, and communication, the job is “just right” for her. When Khun Anongnart was young, she lived comfortably inside the frame her family had created. “My turning point was around the age of 17,” she says. “I joined AFS exchange program in Norway, where I went to live. I loved talking about Thailand to people I met over there, and it was like I became the Thailand Ambassador (laughing) – and that was how I knew that I loved to communicate things I was really proud of.” She goes on to explain that quality and uniqueness are equally important to her when it comes to promoting a brand. “DNA of YSL is a perfect fit for me. I enjoy working here so much since I have a very good team work and freedom to act especially the result of works I have done have been admired.” she adds. This savvy businesswoman knows what is right for her, and what makes her happy, and she always dedicates her entire self to everything she undertakes. She got first honors from the Faculty of Communication Arts at Chulalongkorn University, but her schooling also includes MSc in Management with Marketing at the University of Bath. She also spent 2 years working in fashion industry in the UK, before returning to work with Central and now L’Oreal in Thailand. “No one was in this position before me,” she explains. “YSL was once in, and then left Thailand for a while. Now YSL just has come into Thailand again as of March of this year. I confident my past experience and exposure would benefit to this job. That’s why I chose to work here and I’m thankful for this opportunity. This challenges me a lot! 58

Her passion, strong determination, great teamwork, and her attitude, are all keys to her success and happiness, both at work and in regular life. She’s also the type who doesn’t dwell on past regrets. “Let the mistakes of the past be lessons learned for the future,” she advises. “When troubles come along, even though I can’t see how to overcome them, I just keep myself up, and working on them until they’re under control. Eventually all troubles can be resolved.” So keep your eyes on this business-minded beauty. She’s a young and tenacious woman who’s truly making her mark in the beauty and fashion industry.
