ack in the 1980s and ’90s, a dance revival was taking the world’s inner-city basements by storm. The Lindy Hop—a Harlem swing da nce f rom the pre -wa r Jazz Age—was reborn when New York’s Sandra Cameron Dance Center invited two of the dance’s founding fathers, Frankie Manning and Al Minns, to teach a new generation. Though the Lindy Hop spread to the likes of London, California, and Sweden, Japan was hardpressed to see the movement tear up its dance halls. Enter competitive dancer Hiro Yamada in 1998. Desperate to learn the latest craze in a city lacking any instructors, he turned to another new fad—the internet— to get hold of an instructional videotape. But mastering the moves was a whole different story. “Do you think you could become a black belt in judo just by watching YouTube clips?” he chuckles. After much deliberation and the support of a few like-minded contacts, Yamada was able to invite the granddaddy himself, Frankie Manning, to give Tokyo’s first workshop.

n a matter of weeks, the Tokyo Swing Dance Society (TSDS) was born. And today it remains at the heart of the city’s scene, spreading its love of the Lindy Hop across the metropolis and teaching new generations how to groove. At TSDS’ weekly Swing Sundays, beginners and pros can jump ’n’ jive with the best of them. “Our philosophy is not just to show the steps, but also to teach people how to communicate with their partner, how to lead and follow, which is after all the very core of social dancing,” says Yamada. “Just imagine, there’s no point learning what a knife and fork are if afterwards you don’t how to use them.” The society also boasts a steady turnout of both sexes, meaning a more even gender ratio compared to most swing dance communities. Those keen to put the moves into action can head to a biweekly Swing Night in Omotesando, which also offers a short introductory lesson beforehand. “While you can’t learn to be a great dancer in a thirty-minute lesson, these nights are a great opportunity to learn the basics and get a taste of what the scene is all about,” Yamada adds. Aside from regular events, the TSDS also hosts some of the capital’s best big band bashes—including their thrice-yearly Omotesando Swingin’ Ball—with some of the country’s top jazz performers and a clientele who most definitely dress to impress. Past highlights have included workshops with Tony Award-nominated swing choreographer Ryan Francois and his partner, Jenny Thomas.

s Lindy Hoppers have grown in number, so too has the Tokyo scene, with new schools appearing like Swing Jack and Dancing Bus. But what really separates it from other more populous movements such as salsa (“All [Latin] music sounds the same to me!” laughs Yamada), is the accompanying fashion. Swing dancing is part of a subculture whose adherents sure as hell know how to wear some red lippy and a decent set of brogues. The late-’90s piqued further interest in all things Jazz Age with the explosion of a swing revival (see Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, The Brian Setzer Orchestra, Squirrel Nut Zippers and the films Swing Kids and Swingers) and neo-burlesque. The result? An army of 20- and 30-somethings who embrace vintage style as a way of life—and that includes getting to grips with dance steps of bygone eras. And it’s not just the young folks who are getting involved. “For many of the older Japanese generation, this is their first experience with the dance,” explains Yamada. “As it began to grow in popularity in the West the first time round, the Second World War hit and all traces of ‘enemy music’ were withdrawn from popular culture.” After WWII, the occupying forces brought the new style to Japan. Postwar partiers took a particular liking to the relatively simple 6-count jiruba, or jitterbug—which offered light relief in comparison to its tougher 8-count sister, the Lindy.

n recent years, swing has spread across Asia. Korea boasts an expanding scene, while Singaporean Sing Lim, creative director for Jitterbugs Swingapore, is one of the genre’s most formidable dancers. But what’s next for the future of the dance in Japan? Interest continues to climb, but Tokyo’s jazz joints are a little slow on the uptake. Many venues are unable to provide adequate dance space, while others fall foul of the no dancing rules recently enforced in the city. As a result, the best opportunities for social dancing still lie in the hands of the societies themselves, who hold regular nights and collaborate on annual events—such as the Shinjuku Jazz Festival. For now, it looks like Tokyo still has a little catching up to do to match London and New York, where classes and events overflow most nights of the week. Those who’ve watched the scene burgeon into a whole community, though, remain hopeful. For those looking for a glamorous old time, it’s hard to resist the urge to slick back your hair, get on your glad rags and get into your swing.

ith two left feet and a Japanese vocabulary extending to some 20 words, walking into class was an apprehensive business. The last time I tried swing dancing back in London, I was quickly cast aside and deemed a lost cause by an older (and rather sweaty) Italian gentleman named Mario. But my worries faded as soon as I met Hiro Yamada and his partner in crime, Yoko. Welcoming me with open arms, they introduced me to the regulars before adding an English translation to their lessons just for my benefit. We began with some simple warm-up stretches before starting the four-hour workshop, which went on to cover the basic moves and more importantly, how to lead and follow your partner. As the lesson progressed, we moved onto some more advanced steps including twists, turns and even the Charleston. For a beginner, the class was tough at times, especially as we moved on to more advanced sequences. However, the personalized support offered by the instructors, and being able to practice with different partners, kept me on track and left me looking forward to becoming a future swing sensation. New York pop unit embraces hometown on latest By Dan Grunebaum

t’s been three years since Metropolis last talked with Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij at the Fuji Rock Festival. The New York pop band was new to Japan and jazzed about their appearance at the country’s key music event. As it happened their set served as a coming out for the group in Japan, and it’s been an upwards ascent here ever since. “Japan is one of the only places where we grew considerably in terms of our following between our first and second albums,” Batmanglij says from his New York home. How did that come about? “It was word of mouth,” he answers. “I think Japanese culture lends itself to discussing things, and people got more interested in our band—some also say our melodies appeal to Japanese tastes.” Not that Vampire Weekend’s popularity has declined elsewhere. The band’s third album Modern Vampires of the City debuted this spring atop the charts—their second number one outing in a row. The

title is inspired by a lyric from the song “One Blood” by Junior Reed, explains Batmanglij. “We liked the way that it indirectly connects with some of the themes on the record, but we also made a conscious decision to take inspiration from this idea of the city at night.” Frontman Ezra Koenig and producer and multiinstrumentalist Batmanglij got together in Batmanglij’s Brooklyn apartment four times a week for about a year, he adds. “I live right underneath the Manhattan Bridge in an old factory so I can see the skyline.” Some songs came together in a flash; others took more time. “The album benefitted from having both kinds of writing,” Batmanglij believes. “One thing we realized on this record is that it was time to maybe write the best songs we could write, and not settle for a mediocre album. The record also deals with getting older. Time is a theme that plays into the album.” “Don’t Lie,” with its simple chorus and tinkling steel drum, was one of the fast ones. Batmanglij says the track emerged quickly at the end of the process. “Ezra

MAKING TEA, MAKING JAPAN

Cultural Nationalism in Practice Reviewed by Mara Duer

f you were ever curious about just what makes the tea ceremony such a Japanese thing, then Kristin Surak’s book, Making Tea, Making Japan, should answer your questions from all possible angles. This scholarly work presents and explores the significance of the utensils used, as well as the architecture and design of the space. It then moves on to the ritual’s role in Japanese history and the politics surrounding it, to how it transformed over time from a once-classless practice to a stratified activity within the political arena. What’s more, the book charts the evolution of the tea ceremony as a national practice and how it ended up in its modern rigid form mostly used by women. Although Making Tea, Making Japan is an academic piece of sociological research, the author is not so coldly divided from her object of study. Surak’s passion and love for the topic emanate from the pages. She describes the minute details and significances of ceremonial etiquette—which might be infuriating for some—with a meticulous perfection: from how one enters the room, to how one moves and what one says.

and I took a trip to Martha’s Vineyard and we devoted ourselves to writing songs,” he recounts. “I wrote about five or six chord progressions, but Ezra was the one who helped me see the light—he just started singing gibberish off the top of his head, and the whole thing came together in about 30 minutes.” Despite their indie roots and Batmanglij’s background in music at Columbia College, where he hooked up with Koenig, drummer Chris Tomson and bassist Chris Baio, Vampire Weekend is first and foremost a pop band—but one always ready with an intelligent quip. Still, Batmanglij insists they are un-ironic. “It’s definitely playful,” he grants, “but we’re not trying to do anything for the sake of cleverness alone.” Batmanglij and Koenig do embrace classic pop song forms. “There’s nothing wrong with conforming to structures because you can put something deeply unconventional inside a traditional structure,” he says. “In fact, it’s probably good to put it in the context of something more digestible.”

While her examination gives keen readers the chance to absorb the minutiae that make up temae (“tea preparation,” which includes hundreds of styles, each with their own specific name in Japanese), for those that are “just curious,” all this expert information could be a little overwhelming: “The gap between the tea bowl and tea container should be the size of the caddy’s lid, and the scoop resting on the tea vessel should not protrude beyond the curve of the water jar to maintain a sense of balance from the main guests’ point of view.” The book is divided in five chapters. Chapter one focuses on the technical aspects of the practice, the first step to understanding the difference between having a cup of tea and performing a Japanese tea ceremony. More interesting, though, is chapter two, which explains the history, the development and the present hegemonic form of the ceremony. The third chapter delves more deeply into the structure and politics surrounding the current form of the practice. The opportunity to meet some of the characters who inhabit this unseen world is presented in chapter four. In an interesting piece of ethnographic collection, we finally get to hear some of this society’s individual voices. One male practitioner points out, “Now tea is a woman’s world, but it used to be men, true warriors at the center… that needs to be recovered. I wanted to do that, so I took it as a hobby.” An instructor from a famous iemoto (“school”) of the tea ceremony says: “We

The book's final chapter looks at the interaction of the tea ceremony with the construction of “Japaneseness.” According to Surak, the majority of the nation has never really experienced an actual tea ceremony. So, she asks, how did it come to be such a familiar national symbol? To find the answer, she scours the media and explores other cultural sources and influences. She makes some interesting comparisons with other countries that also enhance their national cultures by making national art forms out of ordinary practices, like the Turnverein, the German gymnastics movement, or the Indian Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)—a nationalist paramilitary group that advocates physical training to revive the Hindu community. This is not a simple guidebook to enchant novices and teach them the basic steps to get started in the Japanesese ritual of “tea.” But Surak’s comprehensive research will take those interested deep into the practice's background and allow them to see the tea ceremony as a window into the soul of Japanese national identity. As a foreigner living in Japan, this book might well take you back to the moment you first arrived: a wide-eyed newcomer both in love with and resistant to the strict formality of life here—yet always fascinated by the unique traditions by which the Japanese make their nation. amuel Smiles, the great Victorian advocate of “self help" would have loved Konosuke Matsushita. Like Smiles’ other heroes, Matsushita overcame poverty by hard work and continuous self-improvement to found Panasonic, one of the great corporations of Japan. With one electronic gadget after another, many of them designed by himself, Matsushita built up his company from its launch in 1917 to the global prominence it enjoyed at his death in 1989. But the workaholic electronics wizard had another side, as an exhibition at the Shiodome Museum shows. Throughout his life he remained deeply in touch with Japanese culture and traditional arts and crafts. The exhibition features videos of Matsushita dressed in a man’s kimono enjoying the beauties of a traditional Japanese garden. There are also examples of various hagi ware (tea bowls) and other implements from the Japanese tea ceremony, owned by MatsuKimono, Seisyu, large white chrysanthemum shita. Other items from his collection include fabric design, yuzen dyeing on crepe silk, 1980 Panasonic designs, ceramics and some astoundingly beautiful Corporation lacquerware. Some of the design elements of these items might suggest that Matsushita was deriving direct inspiration for product design, but this is unlikely as lacquerware designs, despite their elegance, have a limited application to electronics. Also the tea bowls, with their rough shapes and cracked glaze, exemplify the aesthetic of wabi-sabi (simple and quiet), something that seems to exist in direct contrast to precision electrical engineering. One way to view the great tycoon’s interest in the traditional aspects of Japanese culture is as an escape from the pressures of business. After all, what could be more relaxing after a tense day in the workshop or boardroom than to slip into a black kimono and mix up a bit of green tea in serene surroundings? This theory is almost confirmed by a photo of Matsushita writing Japanese brush calligraphy as well as by a few samples of his work. In the photo he seems more concentrated on his letters than a fifth grader in elementary school doing a kanji test, while his brush calligraphy work Kokoro, Japanese for heart or spirit, is suffused with serenity. While this thesis is no doubt partly true, Matsushita’s interest in traditional Japanese arts and crafts was more than sheer escapism. For Matsushita there was a symbiosis between the spiritual and the commercial. During a visit to a popular Shinto shrine in 1932, he began to consider the similarities between religion and business management. “Human beings need both material and spiritual prosperity,” he later said. “Religion guides people out of suffering toward happiness and peace of mind. And business, too, can contribute by providing physical necessities required for happiness. This should be its primary mission.” Suffused with spiritualism and a sense of continuity to the past and a connection to the wider community, Matsushita’s company continued to improve its business as well as the lives of its customers. A cynic might say this was all about ensuring customer loyalty, but it’s clear from the mood of this exhibition that customer loyalty was just another byproduct of Matsushita’s spiritual and holistic approach to business. Les Grandes Vacances Avant-garde dance-theater group Kakuya Ohashi and Dancers presents a new work based on the science-fiction novel Les Grand Vacances by Hirotaka Tobi. The book is the first installment in Tobi’s Angels of the Derelict Garden series, which are set in a sort of virtual resort in a virtual space where virtual people are waiting in vain for the coming of visitors. Jessica Chastain puts in her sexiest performance to date as a stripper-turned-barmaid. The film is marred by a few underdeveloped subplots and a minor second-half lack of focus, but it remains a solidly e nte r t a i n i n g , s u s p e n s e f u l a n d violently authentic outlaw shoot-’em-up that’s compulsively watchable. May be too slick for some and too pulpy for others. Loved the soundtrack. Japanese title: Yokubo no Virginia. (116 min)

conoclastic director Takashi Ishii has been making flicks that provoke the public and present a fantastical, erot ic , v iolent a nd sometimes nightmarish vision since the early ’90s. His Gonin, Kuro no Tenshi (Black Angel ) and Hana to Hebi ( Flower and Snake) series have all pretty much followed this pattern. One thing you could say about him is that he is always original—though it’s hard to claim that here. Figyua na Anata, though very different in tone, is a similar story to Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Kuki Ningyo (Air Doll), released in 2009. Whipping boy Uchiyama (Tasuku Emoto) is regularly verbally abused at his company until he is fired one day. Wandering home he stumbles into an abandoned building where he discovers mannequins. At the same time, thugs off someone in the building and think Uchiyama is a witness. As he is beaten and prepares for death a mysterious female saves him. After the incident a mannequin (Kokone Sasaki) magically comes to life and becomes his dream woman. Are the two one and the same? This erotic thriller smacks a little to strongly of male fantasy and objectification, though it might thrill 15 yearold boys. (112 min) Rob Schwartz

by the younger Mark Ivanir, who it turns out is having an affair with Ph i l ip a nd Cat her i ne Keener’s (viola) daughter (Imogene Poots), a promising musician in her own right. The tightly knit quartet starts to go out of tune. St ra n gely, t he whole thing has a Woody Allen feel to it. You don’t need to know anything about classical music going in to this knowledgeable, deeply felt film about life and art by Yaron Zilberman, but his affection for the material is infectious, and you will take something away. Zilberman knows what he’s making movies about. Especially notable is Walken, who’s been doing wingnut roles ever since Annie Hall, but this time actually serves as a steadying influence. Who knew? COMPLIANCE

In this riveting condemnation of mankind’s willingness to defer to those who claim authority (“just following orders”), the matronly manager of a fast-food joint (a spot-on Ann Dowd) gets a call from “Officer Daniels,” who claims a pretty blond employee had stolen money from a customer. She is asked to detain Becky (Dreama Walker), strip-search her, and then, along with others, subject her to increasingly horrific and humiliating acts of abuse. This would all seem contrived if it hadn’t actually happened—several dozen times. A potent, primal film that’s hard to watch and harder to forget. Japanese title: Compliance: Fukuju no Shinri. MONSTERS UNIVERSITY

First, any Pixar animation featuring the voices of Billy Crystal, John Goodman and Helen Mirren is worth a look. Sigh. Never thought I’d use that phrase for a Pixar flick. This popsicle-hued origin story of how Sully (jock) and Mike (nerd) met at university represents the further slide of the once-great studio into Disney mediocrity. There’s no Boo (the little human girl). There’s no magic. Anyone over seven will find this to be a mildly amusing checklist of college-movie clichés. Apparently the inspiration and propulsive storytelling of the first movie didn’t graduate along with the technical w i za rd r y. (110 m i n ) S H OW I N G FROM JUL 6

A morose old g uy ( Terence Stamp) resists his wife’s (Vanessa Redgrave) pleas to join her old-folks’ choir. The group, cast from real community choir members and led by a spunky Gemma Arterton, lives for the joy in each moment and in each tune. They do stuff like “Let ’s Talk About Sex” and ”Love Shack.” Quaint. But he reconsiders after her death, faces up to his own shortcomings and starts to live his life. It’s hard to criticize one of the few movies aimed at the elderly, but though the acting is tops and a few songs are quite moving, it tries a bit too hard. Thin plot peters out, but a stirring finish. Japanese title: Encore! (93 min)

It’s strayed rather far from its 2001 street-racing roots, now more resembling a Bond or a heist flick as our gang of renegade peterosexuals battles a nefarious master criminal. It disinters Michelle Rodriguez’s Letty character, conveniently with amnesia. But F&F knows what it is and it delivers the advertised goods. I didn’t much like it. Flying headbutts? Now that’s new. THE HANGOVER PART III

Another accounting office-mandated second sequel. But perhaps “sequel” is not the right term, since the first two were essentially the same, frat-friendly, retracing-our-drunkensteps movie. The bored-looking cast aside, this lazy, lame action/caper flick is completely unrelated to either of them. Giveaway: there’s no drinking, no bachelor party, no friggin’ hangover, fer crissake... and no laughs (but stay for the end credits). Worse, the main story revolves around the aggressively irritating Ken Jeong’s Chinese psycho criminal, who let’s say is better in small doses. No more, please. Sleep it off. Japanese title: Hangover!!! Saigo no Hanseikai. (102 min)

Composer and longtime collaborator Bernard Herrmann said, “Just let me try something here, Hitch.” The resulting screeching violins became one of the most famous music cues in the history of cinema. Experience Herrmann’s all string score come to life is a series of screenings accompanied by live orchestra July 19-21 at Ueno’s Tokyo Bunkaka Kaikan (5-45 Ueno Park, Taito-ku, Tokyo; cine-oke.com). Tasked with making a microbrew for Coors, Villa created a mostly traditional Belgian white beer using skills picked up in Europe. However, where most Belgian whites use Curaçao oranges to give the beer a bitter bite, Villa opted for American Valencia oranges, resulting in a smoother, s weeter brew w it h a d ist i nc t ly orangey nose. This was in the mid ’90s, and US drinkers didn’t react well at first to the unfamiliar cloudiness of an unfiltered beer. Coors tried to shut the project down on several occasions, but Villa soldiered on, repeatedly moving his brewing operations and traveling bar to bar to promote his beer, teaching bartenders how to pour, garnish and serve a white beer and telling them about the health benefits of the oat fiber and the B vitamins in the yeast. Eventually, Blue Moon caught on and is now one of the best-selling craft brews in the country— though some would quibble about whether a beer owned by industry giant Molson Coors really fits the category. Sales volumes have been increasing year on year, something Villa attributes to the easy drinkability of his beer. “[Other craft brewers’ beers] are filled with flavor, but sometimes a bit too much flavor,” he says, mentioning the popular IPA and imperial stout as examples of beers where one glass suffices. “Whereas our beer, I designed it to be smooth, easy to drink and food-friendly.”

eith Villa was supposed to be a pediatrician. While studying pre-med molecular biology at the University of Colorado, he took a job researching fermentation and decided he’d rather make beer. And while he may not have gotten that medical degree, he is a doctor, one of only a handful of Americans with a PhD in brewing from the University of Brussels. Villa isn’t well-known outside of beer circles, but he’s the man responsible for one of the biggest successes in the US craft market, Blue Moon.

And, how can you say no when the owner offers you a free one just to hang out a little longer? n a small side street about ten minutes walk from Ebisu station on the way to Hiroo you’ll find a small restaurant with an unassuming shop front in a neighborhood of hip cafés and art galleries. The name of the place, painted in big blue letters on the window, is Hebrew for “delicious”—and so is the cuisine offered at Ta-im. Ow ner Dan Zuckerman hasn’t done any advertising, and had the misfortune to open his restaurant shortly after the March 11 earthquake. But somehow, word spread about his authentic, made-from-scratch food. Ta-im now does brisk business, particularly in the evenings, so be sure to make a reservation. With counter seating for only about 12 people, it’s a cozy fit, but Zuckerman, a true mensch, makes it feel more like a family event than a random gathering of strangers. He chats enthusiastically with all the guests, while getting them to talk to each other as well. On a recent dinner visit, we availed ourselves of the highly recommended falafel (¥680/4) and were not disappointed. They were fried to order and came out with just the right crispness. In true Israeli style they were served with both tahini sauce and a spicy red harissa paste (made from chili peppers, paprika and olive oil). We added a plate of mixed dips, including personal favorites hummus and babaganoush, and some piping-hot pita. We also opted for the tabbouleh salad (¥520

Villa is now targeting Asian markets and has decided to start in Japan, where he thinks the food culture will be a perfect match for unfiltered beers. “Japanese people are very picky when it comes to food and drinks. They have high standards and I think they will appreciate the taste of Blue Moon and the fact that it’s brewed with only all-natural ingredients.” He may be facing a similar battle here to his early days in the States, though. Although the craft market is booming, it’s still a small fraction of total beer sales, and the average consumer is not all that familiar with Belgian-style beers. Villa has already launched an education offensive. A large portion of the launch party on June 20 was given over to a demonstration of how to pour and serve Blue Moon properly, and waitstaff brought guests glass after glass, along with food specially prepared to complement the beer’s coriander and citrus notes. It remains to be seen how Blue Moon will do in the Land of the Rising Sun, but Villa is confident that it can appeal to the average consumer who wants a little more flavor, the craft beer aficionado who wants something smoother for a night of drinking, and even wine drinkers who would like to get into beer. In fact, it could be just what the doctor ordered. Blue Moon is currently available at these local bars: Craft Hands (Azabu-Juban), Meat & Bakery Tavern (Naka-Meguro), Craftheads (Shibuya), Cataratas (Shibuya), Beard (Meguro), and Mardi Gras (Ginza).

The pita was the fluffy, slightly chewy type that complemented the dips perfectly without an overpowering yeasty flavor, and the hummus had that creamy smoothness that is so hard to recreate at home. The tabbouleh was some of the best we’ve had in ages, with the crunchy sweetness of the cucumbers balancing the acidic tomatoes, and just the right amount of cilantro. Meat eaters can choose from dishes like chicken schnitzel (¥1,380) and sautéed lamb (¥1,680)—though the menu changes based on availability. We popped in for a meat-inclusive lunch a few days later and tried a set with sautéed chicken and peppers, fried potatoes, soup, salad, pita and hummus (¥1,300). We finished every last bite—including a few falafel balls laid on top— despite almost bursting at the seams. The drink menu covers the basics, with some reasonably priced Israeli wines. MERCY ME Regarding “The Quality of Mercy” (The Last Word, June 21): Wow, this is one-sided. I hope to God that I never need any serious painkillers, but the statement, “Do police or politicians really believe patients in such dire circumstances would be out on the streets hawking their drugs? Were that so, all the countries where they are sold would have huge abuse problems—yet they do not,” is just completely false.

The wide-eyed pharmacist stared in disbelief at my bottles as if they were from Mars, and required half an hour’s worth of hushed discussions with the duty nurse, the supervising nurse, and two attending physicians before it was agreed upon that yes, I could take my pills. A couple days after my surgery one of the orthopedists was in my room with a couple other doctors, and looking at my chart he tells them, “In America, they actually take opiates for pain. I had nothing.” But today, he is the proud owner of a new store selling just seeds and seedlings. How anyone can stay in business when competing with t he g ia nt box-stores sel ling t he same for less is a mystery to me. I don’t ask questions. He tells me his income is “less than what most people make around here,” but this doesn’t seem to bot her him. He personifies stubbornness; a fierce will to live and a commitment to survival. The hostility he showed to h is c ustomers t wo su m mers ago when he was working through his post-trauma grief is all but a memory. “I wanted to get this stor y out from inside me. That I rebuilt this store, if you can call it that... that I rebuilt it from scraps of debris I found all over town. That I rebuilt my store shows people here that even someone regular like me can start over. That even someone like me—who lost everything—can still

Then comes t he shocker. “But I don’t speak, read or write English,” he laug hs. “So, I looked up words i n t he d ic t iona r y one a f ter t he ot her, a nd t hen sta r ted put t ing them together, not knowing at all whether it was correct.” But why would a man try to write a book in a lang uage he doesn’t know? “It’s hard to write words like ‘dead bodies’ and ‘coffins’ in Japanese. In English, they’re just words. In Japanese, these same words are emot iona l ly cha rged,” ex pla i ns Sato. “Dictionaries are really helpful,” he continues. “Get a native speaker to check your work, and—” he claps his hands. “Just like that, you’ve gotten out what was pent up inside. That’s really all I did.” Through his book, Sato personifies the spirit of plowing through dirt and muck, literally and figuratively. It’s hard not to like and respect t his ma n a nd what he’s done. He’s blu nt , a nd do e s n’t mince words. He shoots from the hip and shrugs off those who just

made it a reality. “I called the book The Seed of Hope in the Heart. I sel l seeds, right? I’m selling a different kind of seed through this book. I’m trying to plant this idea in peoples’ hearts t hat we can recover. Somet hing like this will happen some day in another part of Japan and another part of the world. I’m trying to get people to understand, to believe that we can get through even the most unreal, toughest part of what a disaster leaves behind.” The result is a short book revealing g rief and hope in ways only this remarkable man can capture. I won’t spoil it for you. This is a true, first-hand account of a victim who turned himself into a survivor out of sheer will. Read it and weep—as many have.
