Ditching the streets and heading inside a nice, cool arcade is one of way of chilling that as old as the ‘80s— it’s also an easy way to gamble and lose your cold, hard cash. Try these tips for taking top prize at UFO Catcher. 1. A UFO Catcher prize is worth only as much as you think it is. Decide how much you’re willing to spend before you put in the first coin. If you don’t think you can win within your budget, walk away. 2. The longer you take to play, the “looser” the claw will get when it drops. Be decisive and act fast. 3. Most prizes can’t simply be lifted and carried; they must be dragged, pushed, or tipped over the edge. 4. When in doubt on how to win something, ask a staffer. They’ll often demonstrate the best way to win a prize, and will even move it to a better position if you ask nicely. 5. The bigger and better a prize is, the harder it is to get. 6. Know your surroundings. Is it a dingy and dirty local game center or a polished Taito? Is it empty or full of tourists and Japanese? Are games affordable or do they cost ¥200 a shot? How often are prizes swapped out? Answer key: ¥100 game centers are better, arcades that get a lot of tourists tend to rip them off. Dingy arcades rarely have good prizes and often rip you off as well. 7. To “push” items, figure out which UFO catcher arm is “weak” and “strong.” Some machines let you rotate the claw before it drops—use this to your advantage. 8. Most boxes have holes of some sort on the sides just as most stuffed toys have ribbons, loops, or something else that the claw can catch onto and drag. 9. Prizes that look like they’re precariously perched over a ledge are often supported by hidden platforms, sticky material, or rounded edges. Know what you have to beat before you start playing. 10. If you want a certain prize badly enough, there are plenty of stores in Akihabara and elsewhere that sell them. But that’s no fun, is it? Dan Orlowitz

Fuji Rock Festival ‘13 Rock, rain and beating Big C By Dan Grunebaum and Lisa Wallin

T

his year’s Fuji Rock Festival went down as usua l at Naeba Sk i Resor t f rom July 26-28 amid much fanfare, much more rain and even more exuberance. Metropolis Editors Dan Grunebaum and Lisa Wallin were there, and this is what they had to say about it in their chatty post-mortem. Dan Grunebaum: Hi Lisa. Ready for a brief chat about Fuji? Lisa Wallin: Sure! I was just listening to some Turtle Island. DG: Did you catch them on the opening night? LW: I did. I’d heard a lot of good things about them, but nothing prepared me for the real thing. They were amazing! Just watching them was exhilarating. There was so much going on, I didn’t know where to look. The crowd had such a good vibe as well, everyone was dancing. DG: So a good start to the festival for you...What was your impression of this year’s headliners? LW: My initial thought was that every single one of them was a great choice in terms of nostalgia. As for actual performance, I don’t think anyone could beat Bjork. Even though it was a shame we couldn’t see her face on the big side screens, the visuals were breathtaking. I liked the underwater one best, it took me a while to figure out the starfish were crawling around on a corpse! DG: The fact that the headliners these days are generally bands at least a decade or two old could also indicate that Western rock isn’t that popular in Japan at the moment, so it’s hard to think of any young bands that could headline Fuji. I thought there were a lot of great young bands though, for example Local Natives were powerful on the Red Marquee, and Tame Impala got rave reviews. But none of them are big enough to headline the Green Stage. Skrillex is young and headlined the White Stage, but he’s an electronic artist. Were there any new discoveries for you? LW: Oh yeah. Always. That’s the best part of FRF! I love the Rookie stage, so I always make sure to research those bands well ahead of time. They’ve got an awkward schedule, but there are often bands worth waiting up for. My favorite pick this time was Bakudan Johnny. Young kids from Hokkaido who know how to put on a show! It’s not often you see underwear flying off the stage. Other than that, and I hadn’t really heard of Ryukyudisko (Red Marquee) before . How about you? DG: There was that bizarre group, Drowned Shrimp, on the Rookie stage. Ten people in giant shrimp outfits playing a sort of warped undersea techno-pop. But for musical mastery, it was hard to beat Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba, a group from Mali that put on a mesmerizing show of traditional African music on several stages over the weekend. On a more sober note, did you catch

Skrillex

Wilko Johnson

Turtle Island

Wilko Johnson’s show? Pretty impressive energy for a man who is dying from cancer. LW: I caught Wilko Johnson very briefly when he played the Green Stage. It was amazing—I actually thought it was someone else at first. DG: Half the fun of Fuji is of course socializing, meeting friends new and old, and enjoying the sense of community that happens when 50,000 people camp and get wasted together for three days. What was your most memorable non-musical moment? LW: Hmm, the first one that springs to mind is a guy walking around only wearing a cardboard box during the pre-party on Thursday night. The other one would be semi-musical. A guy got up on the newly opened Busker Stop stage, where “normal” people can also perform and sang a song about the f lowers in my hair. The flowers were courtesy of a duo doing free hair styling at the Fujirockers Lounge. How about you? DG: Hanging out with the security crew and

Naeba village locals after-hours at the “Blue Marquee” was a good laugh. Something strange happens after the sun comes up at Fuji, when people refuse to stop partying and head to the Blue Marquee. Any bands you’d like to see at Fuji Rock ‘14? LW: Wow, so, so many. I think Crossfaith and Fear and Loat hing in Las Vegas could take on the W hite Stage. They’re both pretty heavy, but it would be nice to change it up a bit. I could list and endless line of Rookie-worthy bands. As for big names... I can’t think of anyone off the top of my head who hasn’t been in the last 2-3 years. DG: It would be amazing if Smash could get someone like David Bowie, Paul McCartney or the Stones, and at top of my personal wish list is Soundgarden, but we may have to keep dreaming about all that. With all the festivals around the world these days, it’s very hard for Fuji and Summer Sonic to book top tier artists year after year. Anyway, the rumors will begin next winter, with the first official announcement likely in March. Look forward to seeing you at FRF14 and thanks for the chat! LW: Wow, you just made me get all dreamyeyed and hopeful now! Cheers! As recorded by Google Chat on July 31.

Writing to Write Home About

refining the Chinese writing style. We can see the difference in a work like Poems of Bai Juzi by the master Fujiwara no Koyei, which is characterized by a gentle brush pressure and delicate treatment of line that sets it apart from its mainland predecessors. The show balances serious academic scrutiny with an enjoyment of the sheer wealth of beauty in in these objects. This is especially true of works from the later Edo period (c. 1600-1868), by which point nostalgia for classical culture led to the concept of kohitsu (calligraphy classics), enthusiastically collected and displayed in private homes and at tea ceremonies. In such an atmosphere of conscious appreciation, contemporary calligraphy pieces like those by Hon’ami Koetsu freely combine text and image with the primary purpose of sophisticated visual pleasure. In Hon’ami’s text of a waka poem (itself an art form dependent on the development of written script), extravagantly large characters are delineated in varying intensity over a floral painted motif. The loose, flowing brushstrokes are painted

in consciously rhythmic fashion across the space of the scroll, making them part of the overall composition as much as the soft touches of leaves and petals that they interlock with. But perhaps the exhibition is most interesting for what it reveals about calligraphy’s relevance to the wider scope of Japanese history. Of course, the art of shodou (literally "the way of the brush") is as much part of Japan’s cultural heritage as ikebana or the tea ceremony. Yet it has played a role in everything from politics (as we see in the private letters of Edo shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu) to faith. The fan-shaped albums of the Lotus Sutra (circa 12th century; pictured) are a stunning example of the latter. At that time it was believed that the degeneration of mappo (Buddha’s law) was imminent, and the only way to avert it was through sheer strength of prayer. Devout Japanese Buddhists vied to express their piety in ever more extravagant ways, of which the patronage of lavishly decorated sutras became a key part. This means that although the Lotus Sutra’s script combines a graceful fluidity of stroke with the exquisite colouring of the figurative image beneath, it should actually be seen in sum as a religious offering rather than a self-contained narrative. The underpaintings have no relation to the subject of the sutra writing itself. This only redoubles the point that even in this comparatively early period, calligraphy had transcended the function of communication to become a decorative form in its own right. Arguably, one of wayou calligraphy’s joys is that we can see its delicate style reflected even in handwritten Japanese today. Yet the National Museum’s show makes a convincing case for its wider links with ideas of religious piety, aesthetic refinement and even, as the catalogue puts it, ”natural and national character.” Whether this verges on the overly patriotic is up to you to decide. Either way, in the Tokyo art world’s quiet summer season, this collection of treasures stands out as an unmissable opportunity. Tokyo National Museum, until Sep 8. See exhibition listings (Ueno) for details.

old as Fuji Rock. Tiempo Iberoamericano’s founder is Spaniard Santiago Herrera. “Latin music still is very alternative in Japan,” he says. “It’s very interesting to see how many people enjoy it but hard to understand why it does not become more popular. It’s difficult to fathom why an NPO is finally the bridge to bring to Japan acts as Café Tacvba, Juan Luis Guerra, Los Van Van, etc... All are multiple Grammy winners that you would assume would have a lot of offers—but the doors are still closed.”

Still, Herrera says that despite the lack of a boom in popularity of Latin music to equal the craze for Latin dance forms in Japan, “There is always an expectation for which band we invite to Isla de Salsa—that I think is an achievement.” A f ter t he Fu k uok a fest iva l, Tiempo Iberoamericano follows up with a tour of the headliner around Japan and to Asia-Pacific destinations including the Sydney Opera House. This is the group’s first stab at a festival in Tokyo. “From this year we are trying to establish the festival ¡Animate! as a regular event,” Herrera says. “It’s a one-day, threeactevent and we hope it will get larger in the future. “We have chosen the theme “Cuba meets Brazil” in consideration of the fact that both are real capitals for music in the world. Music has an importance for ordinary people in these countries that is difficult to find in other places. We have no idea what the reaction will be—but we can guarantee a first-class experience.” Zepp Diver City, Aug 31.

o spend a summer afternoon in the g loomy c on f i ne s of t he Nat ion a l Museum studying centuries-old fragments of text might sound like a very dry day off indeed. Yet “The Beauty of JapaneseStyle Calligraphy” manages to transform a subject that could have been the preserve of experts-only into a vibrant celebration of the beauty of written script. Even if you can’t read a single character, this exhibition promises to inform and delight in equal measure. The vast 156-object display is curated with excellent narrative clarity. From the first import of China’s writing system to Japan in the early centuries AD to the point when wayou (Japanese-style) calligraphy had grown to flourish with an aesthetic sense entirely its own, we are shown how an appreciation for writing as art in itself has led to calligraphy attaining near-sacred significance. As Japanese scholars altered early kanji to form the syllabic system now known as kana in the Heian period (794-1192), they were simultaneously

What Happened Anyway

The New Shapes of Paper and Ourselves Paper plays a large part in our daily lives: documents that make or break a business, cherished letters from loved ones, crumpled up tissues with the residues of our pain (or simply mucal matter). As we hurtle headlong into an increasingly digital world, paper’s immediate significance becomes less apparent. Its versatility is still being explored by artists and designers—the result of which can be seen in the variety of paper-based art creations at “The New Shapes of Paper and Ourselves” exhibition at the Meguro Museum of Art. Metropolis is giving away five pairs of tickets to this paperiffic exhibition. Simply answer to the question: “Do you prefer reading magazines online or in print?” and send it along with your full name and postal address to giveaways@ metropolis.co.jp to enter. Meguro Museum of Art, until Sep 8, ¥450-600. Open Tue-Sun 10am-6pm. 2-4-36 Meguro, Meguro-ku. Tel: 03-3714-1201. Nearest station: Meguro. http://mmat.jp

The Dyatlov Pass Incident

In 1959 a group of experienced Russian hikers died mysteriously in the snowy Ural Mountains, and the incident was propelled into local legend. This much is true. The real mystery is why accomplished action director Renny Harlin (Die Hard 3, The Long Kiss Goodnight) would want to make, of all things, a found-footage flick about five young American filmmakers retracing the doomed group’s footsteps. The conspiracies advanced include the Philadelphia Experiment, aliens, the Yeti, the Moth Man and mad Russian scientists. You get the idea. Better than average for an FF movie, but still straight-to-DVD stuff. (100 min)

In the land of Blood and Honey

A Bosnian Serb policeman falls in love with a Muslim woman in 1992 as the region’s fragile harmony erode s . W hen t he B osn ia n wa r breaks out, he finds himself in charge of a military camp where she turns up as a prisoner. Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut displays talent and promise, and she succeeds in her goal of attracting international attention to the atrocities committed against women in war. But that’s not what makes a good movie, and the story suffers from her ardor to get her message across. Cinematically speaking, for many this will be a noble, well-intentioned and very depressing slog. (129 min)

Street Kings and screenwrote Training Day, offers little you haven’t seen before. You just haven’t se en it done t h i s wel l . Sure it looks at first like a cop-buddy movie, but it’s so much more. After taking the time to develop b el ievable ch a racte rs , Ayer slowly ratchets up the suspense and tension to the point where the riveting final 30 minutes are almost unbearable. And don’t think you know what’s going to happen. Quibbles: Some may have a problem with the hand-held, multiple-POV camerawork, which is a bit too clever and sometimes even re semble s fou nd footage, but it’s startlingly effective. And the gang-banger villains are a bit cartoonish. Emotionally hefty, visceral, and done on a human scale, this gritty ride-along is irresistibly entertaining. Also Anna Kendrick, Natalie Martinez, Frank Grillo, David Harbour and America Ferrera. (109 min)

Movie 43

T h e r e ’s c a m p y f u n n y, t h e r e ’s unintentionally funny, and there’s Movie 43. You’d think a collection of naughty vignettes by 12 directors starring several A-list actors would be a hoot. It. Is. Not. I suspect blackmail. These bits of calculated raunch explore the innate hilarity of bodily secretions, scrotums, menstruation, feces, farts, incest and bestiality. It’s aiming for something like the now-classic ejaculate hairgel scene in There’s Something About Mary. Fails filthily. A dozen times. I get paid to watch this crap. You don’t. And I can’t un-see it. This is pure, soulsucking ugliness. Just no. (90 min)

or Guillermo del Toro, Pacific Rim is more than an epic summer movie. “It is a love letter to the Japanese culture that I grew up with as a very small Mexican otaku,” the director said during a recent promo trip to Japan. “I was born at the height of the golden era of kaiju,” the 48-year-old director recalls, referring the Japanese monster genre started by Godzilla and Mothra. Del Toro had heard a story of Ishiro Honda gathering together the staff of the first Godzilla film in 1954 to announce that anyone who thought it was a waste of time to make a giant lizard movie should leave the room. Del Toro approached his film with the same seriousness, explaining that it does not contain a drop of irony or post-modern humor. However, he did add a human touch to his story. When the monsters emerge from the sea, humankind responds by making equally huge robots to battle them. But they can only be driven by two humans sharing a neural link, hinting that cross-cultural cooperation is the only way to save the world. Just because he has completed his kaiju homage, doesn’t mean that Del Toro will be leaving his otaku past behind. When asked where he would like to visit in Tokyo, without hesitation he replied, “Nakano Broadway,” referring to the Chuo Line geek mecca. “I have an empty suitcase to fill there.” Pacific Rim is currently playing nationwide. Playing For Keeps

NEW

A bankrupt former soccer star tries to worm his way back into the affections of his ex-wife by coaching his son’s peewee team, but his efforts are hampered by all those horny soccer moms throwing themselves at him (whom he accommodates; this was originally titled Playing The Field). I can understand the increasingly tiresome Gerard Butler being in this kind of sappy-happy family crap, but Jessica Biel, Uma Thurman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Judy Greer and Dennis Quaid should know better. And the kid’s annoying. Here come the adjectives: lazy, valueless, predictable, misogynistic and dismaying. (106 min)

Pacific Rim

A p o p c o r n e r m a d e m a i n l y to provide work for CGI geeks, this is mostly 25-story good-guy robots battling enormous Toho monsters called Kaiju. It’s Transformers meets Godzilla by way of Top Gun. The production design is eye-popping, at least for the first half hour. It is, after all, by fantasy visionary Guillermo Del Toro, who crafted Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy. But there’s little of the human warmth of those movies, and the spectacle soon morphs into deafening repetition. Little for the diverse cast to do. Most of the dialogue is shouted. It’s like watching someone else play a very loud video game. (131 min)

White House Down

Roland Emmerich makes big, dumb & loud disaster porn for 12-yearolds. Like Godzilla and 2012. This i s a not her. A bu nch of ha m my bad guys cinematically take over the title mansion. Fractured plot, murky motives, and what pacing? Also the silliest car chase in movie h i stor y (a rou nd t he W H law n ). Okay, Channing Tatum is marginally less wooden than usual as the wife-beater-clad hero, and he and imperiled POTUS Jamie Foxx riff well off each other. So is it better than that other moronic blowingup-the-White-House, Die Hard clone, Olympus Has Fallen? Jeez, who cares? At least it doesn’t star Gerard Butler. (131 min)

Robot and Frank

In this playfully subversive reflection on aging, death and intelligence, artificial and otherwise, Frank (a wry and wily Frank Langella) is a retired cat burglar with a failing memory. Much to his annoyance, his fussbudget son buys him a butler/caregiver robot (voiced by Peter Saarsgard), a commonplace item in the film’s not-too-distant-future setting. The crusty Frank initially resists, but then realizes he can persuade the capable little appliance to help him swipe the jewels of a particularly arrogant yuppie neighbor. Also a radiant Susan Sarandon, James Marsden and Liv Tyler. (90 min)

French cuisine with a twist at Signature By Yukari Sakamoto

A

n addition to the roster of French chefs already practicing their craft here in the metropolis has arrived in the form of Nicolas Boujéma, new Chef de Cuisine at Signature in Nihonbashi’s Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo. At almost two meters tall, the 32-year-old Boujéma maintains a boyish look. He says he rides his bicycle to work, and one can only wonder where he found a bike big enough for his long legs in Tokyo. About his impressive resume, he says his classical training is “based in a triangle of three kitchens: Pierre Gagnaire in Hong Kong, L’Auberge de l’Ill in Alsace, and of La Réserve de Beaulieu on the French Riviera. I am starting to go out of the triangle and add my personal touch.” Chef Boujéma visits Tsukiji Market regularly and is having fun as he comes across new seafood and produce. “The Japanese are very knowledgeable about seasonal ingredients,” he says. “I love squid, firefly squid, asari, and hamaguri clams.

Craft beer bottles in Kannai By Jeff W. Richards

okohama’s “Beer-muda Triangle”—an area roughly encompassing Yokohama, Bashamichi and Kannai stations—is filled with craft brew pubs and bars such as Yokohama Brewing, Bashamichi Tap Room, Bay Brewing and the quintessential heavy metal craft beer bar, Thrash Zone (to name just a few). All have helped place the city at the nexus of Japan’s indie beer map. A nten na A mer ica is no flashy brew pub, though, sitting on t he f if t h f loor of a non-descript converted apartment building as it is. Owned by Nagano Trading Company— who have been bringing beer direct to Japan from American breweries since 2006—its decor is simple and sparse, with plain white walls and f luorescent lighting offsetting a gray-blue carpet. Various brewery posters cling to the walls or sit propped

Boujéma is currently working on a vegetarian menu for the restaurant and says that he likes to source local Tokyo products when possible. On his days off he is busy visiting French restaurants in town. He enjoys reading cookbooks and his favorite is by turn-of-the-century chef Edouard Nignon: “A poet in the kitchen,” he says. Signature has an impressive selection of wines and the sommeliers on staff are happy to pair each course with a new one. At lunch, pockets of warm waffles are filled with shallots braised in a Port wine and topped with truffle-studded whipped cream and more truffles. Coupled with

a Jubilee Hugel Riesling from Alsace, it’s a lovely match. It’s not hard to see his affinity for acidity ref lected in some of his dishes. His dinner main course was reminiscent of a bouillabaisse of braised cod, but served over amadai (tilefish) sashimi with an egg plant puree t hat had bursts of lemon hidden inside. “This is my message to the diners, a surprise explosion, t he power of acidity.” Metropolis asks if he has any tips for the home cook. “Always try to give a signature to the dish. If you like bitter flavors, next time you are roasting a chicken, add to the gravy some Angostura Extra Bitter. If you like sour, then add grapefruit.” This is Boujéma’s first year in Japan and he invites all Tokyoites to visit Signature. “Try the food of a happy chef and to eat the cuisine of someone who is discovering Japan.” Signature in the Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo. 2-1-1 Nihonbashi Muromachi , Chuo -ku; Reservations: 0120-806-823. www.mandarinoriental.com/tokyo/fine-dining/signature/

up on unused kegs and small tables to stand at are placed near the back. Turn to the left, though, and a small bar with keg taps and bottles reveals the depth of their niche. Glass refrigerators line the back wall stocked with 50-60 different types of beer from up to half a dozen of America’s best craft breweries such as Ballast Point, Stone, Speakeasy, Green Flash and Bear Republic. Antenna features four rotating beers on tap, and we started with a Devil’s Canyon Full Boar Scotch (¥830) and a Green Flash Hop Odyssey Citra Session IPA (¥960). The Devil’s Canyon was dark and stout-ish, lightened by the slightly nutty and toasty malt taste—something whisky drinkers would enjoy. The IPA was crisp and hoppy, but not overly so, with the promised citrus easing the marijuana-like nose—definitely the better choice for the hot humid evening. A simple food board breaks dow n t he menu into t hree categories: chicken baskets, burgers and dogs, each with an amazing variety of sauces and mustards created by some of the breweries to mix and match. We opted for chicken drumsticks (¥600-¥1,200) with Oaked Arrogant Bastard Ale chipotle sauce that turned out to be spicy and BBQ-y with plenty of meat on the bone— and included fresh celery sticks and a real blue cheese dressing for dipping. The Cali-Belgique Dijon

burger (¥650) was small, with a Japanese bakerystyle bun, but a very American-style seasoned patty slathered with melted cheese and served with waffle-cut fries. A simple hot dog (¥450) served plain but with an invitation to avail yourself of all the craft brew condiments rounded out the meals. The terrace on this converted apartment complex looks over a parking lot and the ass-end of Kannai and Noge, but there's plenty of room to recommend it for a breezy summer night. We ended our foray into American craft beer territory here with a bottle of bitter, hopped up Speakeasy Big Daddy IPA and an Oaked Arrogant Bastard Ale (both ¥650), which had a bourbon-like bite and pleasant, lingering finish—much like our latest venture into the “Beer-muda Triangle.”

There’s a kite configuration in your chart which could be just what you need. A kite is one of the more powerful astrological combos. This one brings healing to your subconscious mind, to past lifetimes that trip up this one, to your desire for sanctuary when it doesn’t appear. Pluto creates the need to develop a new path. Saturn holds the energy still so you can make it real. Jupiter brings emotional nurturing.

Friends come to the rescue and a partner holds the line of life steady for you. Pluto crunches your spiritual belief system into a portable one as Jupiter forces feelings to surface. This is a configuration of the astrological kite, one that pushes an issue until like steel, you become forged into a more powerful position and person. Juno in your house of career indicates you have a stand-by scenario to tide you over.

Watch for the unexpected to rise to the surface. This includes your point of view, your feelings, and possibly financial rewards. The configuration of the kite in your chart accents healing in your career or a situation that has made you a high profile player. Undo what didn’t braid together in the first place. Someone else in your life must put their fair share of energy into your puzzle or it’s time to let go.

Your schedule may be so weighty you need to buy more space in your calendar. Virtually speaking, you are reaching further than ever. Physically too. That’s because you’re the Moonchild, reflecting and absorbing the current emotional climate. Luckily there’s a kite configuration in the skies. Connecting the stars comes easily as expanded healing brings crumbled foundations into new stability..

Leos are in luck this week. Without trying, you've mastered the art of having a following who will sing your praises. Support, warmth and heart that you have shared comes full cycle right back to you. A kite configuration in the heavens flies full force into winds of prosperity. You’re still in your Birthday Zone, turning heads with your effervescent personality and the sheer power of perserverence.

Venus enters your solar sector on Saturday. As much as you might miss her in your sign, you might enjoy this goddess of plenty even more in your house of income. The Sun enters Virgo on Thursday. The kite configuration in the skies is a triple threat to those who dare to stand in the way of your plans. Friends especially want to see you succeed and will support the security or adventures you seek.

As others unravel, you're learning to knit together what works. Don’t do what they do as their learning curve is different from yours. The kite configuration in the skies fits differently into each sign’s chart. For Libra there’s a focus on finance and career. How you are viewed is a big part of your earning potential. Venus, your ruler, enters Libra on Friday. Now is the time to cash in on heavenly benefits.

Scorpio is involved in a kite configuration this week. You’re the stabilizing part, which is asking a lot since it may feel like the rest of the cosmos is pulling on you! Still, you’ll have your moments of being able to soar. You realize partnership has to meld with your deepest sense of self. Your connection to the divine is growing by leaps and bounds within you. There isn’t any time to waste. Choose your healing.

Feb 19, 20~Mar 20, 21 ♥♥ ¥¥¥ ♣♣♣♣

It may seem like it’s taking forever to get things in motion. That’s because you are changing moment to moment. Sagittarius can’t help being a spiritual seeker, sending your arrows to the skies. This week there’s a kite configuration that undoes your ways of thinking and interacting. Suddenly the elusive part of the puzzle just slips into place. You realize what you do and don’t need. Prepare to be pleasantly surprised.

The cosmos knows what you are seeking, only taking away to bring something better. That may sound like just words at the moment, but it may also resonate as truth at a deep level. What you have had won’t work in the light of what you are becoming. You can’t be what you are not. Neither can anyone else. A kite configuration in the heavens pulls on your deepest emotions to find how you can, and will, happily soar this week.

You are going through changes, but they’re written for you. Enough of the sticky icky Piscean era. The Aquarian era is what you showed up for. Venus enters her rulership on Friday, gearing your thoughts towards a long-distance trip or meeting someone who could become a romantic partner. A kite configuration in the heavens lends support. The Full Moon is in your sign this week. Be prepared to react deeply.

There isn’t anyone deeper than a Pisces, but you might want to strap on a life jacket anyway this week. The kite configuration which involves three water signs including yours takes off. If you play your cards right, it could mean a great love and romance is twinned with your destiny. On the other hand, it could be that you are so spurred by the spiritual implications that you become, suddenly, very down to earth.

J.League is official [sic], or some times J. League but not J-League.—J.Boy Writer Dan Orlowitz responds: You are technically correct—the best kind of correct. Unfortunately, search engines such as Google don’t like the presence of a period in “J.League” or “J. League” (both are used on the official

site, which you’ll notice is “j-league.or.jp” and not “j.league.or.jp”). Using the full stop makes it much harder for search engines to read the article and pull out the relevant keyword, which is why many English-language sites use “J-League” instead. So, if you’re going to be irritated at anyone, I suggest you ask the league why they included a full stop in the middle of their name!

Japan Cuts Carbon Emissions from Non-Kawaii Sources As nations worldwide struggle to find ways to cut their carbon footprint, Japan has taken an aggressive approach, slashing up to 50 percent of their excess carbon releases from areas unrelated to kawaii things. Speaking at a news conference in Tokyo this past Monday, the Minister of Industry, Environment and Cute Things explained how the drastic cuts have taken effect. “I must stress that the careful use of electricity across our nation—through setsuden, a renewed look at efficiency in our factories and a redesign of our public transportation system—will not affect our ability to produce cute, largely useless things. I realize many were concerned that our position as a global leader in this area might be threatened as we reduce our carbon footprint. I’m proud to report our footprint is indeed smaller... and cuter.” Some early reports showed that cuteness may have suffered as Akihabara maids reported increased sweating due to higher temperatures and factories discussed removing unnecessary cat ears from products ranging from baby bottles, coffee mugs and kidney dialysis machines. However, early results show a net increase in the amount of entirely unneeded cuteness.

African Man Lost For Hours Trying to Ask for Directions in Roppongi Investment analyst Abdul Mktembe wandered the areas surrounding Roppongi Crossing for three hours on Saturday evening in a vain attempt to get directions. Surprised by the cold shoulder given him by residents as well as foreign tourists, the 38-year-old visiting businessman from Nigeria explained his frustration to The Negi, “I understand that in large cities like Tokyo people are busy and often unfriendly, but people were downright rude. I tried everyone I passed on the street, but no one would take even a moment to tell me where I could find The Disney Store. My two daughters will be heartbroken that I couldn’t buy them a Princess Tiana doll.” When asked, one pedestrian explained, “He got in my

Sony Releases Face Recognition Software That Knows You Are a Gaijin In an excited press conference held at their main showroom in Ginza today, Sony unveiled the latest in “smart camera” technology: a camera with facial recognition software that can determine if the user is foreign and adapt to accommodate. Speaking to tech journalists, Sony’s lead developer explained, “Cutting edge Race-ignition software can quickly ascertain the nationality

of the user through an optical interface that measures eye roundness and length of nose to immediately begin helping the gaijin... err, user, with their camera needs.” Once having established the “foreignness” of the operator, the in-camera digital panel screen will immediately assume their complete inabilit y to understand Japanese. A voice will also begin issuing helpful audio information, such as intermittently exclaiming, “Oh, you use a camera ver y well!” or “Do you know Japanese sushi?”

face asking if I liked baby dolls or something.” Another stressed, “Before he even opened his mouth I was like, ‘Just go F-yourself, dude.’ I don’t have time for this trash. I’m going to a club to get drunk and look for some skanks.” He was especially saddened since his youngest has recently been diagnosed with childhood leukemia. Mr. Mktembe momentarily believed he had found hope when he ran into a fellow countryman, but the man could not give him directions to The Disney Store, only stating: “I know just the place man for young girls man. Follow me.”

The Negi Presents... How to: Chopsticks One huge challenge for foreign visitors to Japan is chopsticks. Since no foreigner— even from other parts of Asia—has ever used ohashi before it may seem like an insurmountable goal, but newly-arrived English teacher Mike Stone shares his top tips to amaze nearby Japanese diners with your skill. 1) Never stick your chopsticks in the rice. An allusion to Buddhist funeral rites and very bad manners. Instead, when not being used chopsticks can be placed behind your ear. 2) When separating wooden chopsticks it is polite to make a loud “Haiiiiiii-ya” karate chop noise. If they do not break exactly perfectly, keep trying until you have. 3) A small wooden spear is usually included with disposable chopsticks. Many mistake this for a toothpick. This is actually a Shinto good luck charm that harkens back to when a samurai would need to defend his rice from attack. 4) It is considered bad etiquette to pass food from one pair of chopsticks to another. Instead, it must be thrown and caught. Most Japanese spend their childhood learning this skill. Please practice at home to avoid embarrassment at formal dinning situations.
