here’s no getting away from it, Kazuki Umezawa is something of an otaku. Not only is he obviously deeply involved in his art—to the point where he probably doesn’t wash or bother communicating much with other humans—but the actual content of his art is clearly otaku as well, in the sense of showing an unhealthy interest in sailor suits, amongst other things. Naturally, for this very reason, he is being touted as an up-and-coming Japanese artist and even the next big thing. A series of his astonishing collage works is now on display at a free exhibition at the Diesel Gallery so you can find out what all the fuss is about. Umezawa’s collages typically feature an overwhelming flood of imagery: bits n’ pieces from comics, 08 • WWW.METROPOLIS.CO.JP

ribbons, buildings, maps of Japan, and other objects. Take a step back and these become an almost abstract jumble. But take another couple of steps back and the abstract confusion seems to coalesce around some large eyeball or other prominent feature into a shaggy, psychedelic figure, eerily looking back at you. One work, an expansive digital print on a tarpaulin, spread across one of the gallery’s walls, is also enhanced by an augmented reality program on tablet computer that allows you to see the various elements of the work in isolation—at least virtually. You could speculate on what drives Umezawa to work in this way? ould you undergo three months of preparation openly billed as, “train till you puke”? Would you subject your body, face, ego and reputation to a beating in the ring? A surprising number of corporate leaders in Tokyo have accepted the challenge and stepped into the ring. The fact that it all takes place in a luxurious ballroom—Vegas-style—and proceeds go to charity, helps to take a little of the sting out of a right hook. “We are pleasantly surprised at just how many executives are out there who want to challenge themselves in Executive Fight Night,” says Dave Thomas, who is the vice president of marketing for Adidas Japan by day and fights under the name “Naughty Ninja” by night. Thomas organizes the event with Adidas colleague Eddie Nixon (a.k.a. “Nifty Ninja”) and Nathan Schmid (a.k.a. “Nimble Ninja”), owner of Tokyo Fitness and Club 360. Like many great ideas, the event was born during a Friday night on the town—but needed a lot to make it work. “None of us had ever organized a fighting event like this,” Thomas admits. “There was a lot to consider and do. We all have demanding jobs, so the work was done late into the night and on weekends.” At first, the trio brought some corporate sponsors and other organizers on board, but now

Executive Fight Night III: Triple Thunder is set for November 8 at Grand Hyatt Tokyo in Roppongi. “When a friend of mine said that it was a charity event, I was in. When I found out it was a boxing event—that was a bonus,” says Tony Evans, area manager for the deVere Group, the event’s main sponsor. “I decided this would be a way to give back personally, as compassion makes us human.” Compassion wasn’t on the list of requirements for trainer Jan Kaszuba. “Contact training begins on day one,” he stated, adding that some of the fighters were in “terrible shape” when they first came to him. “Some of these people have never boxed and needed to learn how to give and take a punch correctly,” explains Kaszuba, who has competed in international MMA, Muay Thai and karate competitions. “I like to keep strategy as simple as possible because it often gets thrown out the window if it’s your first fight.” Ed Overy is one of those who went through Kaszuba’s training and lived to tell the tale. “By fight night, I was in the best physical condition I’d been in in my life,” says Overy, who fought in the first event at the age of 43. The Air New Zealand general manager hung a punching bag in his garage to train and felt ready to face a taller, heavier, and younger opponent. “I was 100% psychologically ready for the

fight,” Overy recalls. “There was not a scenario that I had worked through that had me losing. It was an amazing feeling to step in that ring.” But after three two-minute rounds, things hadn’t exactly gone according to plan. “He consistently landed more blows on me,” Overy admits. “The brutality of it was intense. I got a few clean shots through but in the end, he landed more on me and won the fight by decision.” While the part-time boxers duked it out, the audience at the black-tie event enjoyed a fourcourse meal while mak ing contributions to Refugees International Japan, which funds projects in Thailand, Burma, Sri Lanka and a host of other countries. “This event reaches a new audience for us and really gets people involved,” say Jane Best, the president of the NPO. “The boxers did a great job promoting the cause. Refugees find an outlet for their frustrations through sports, and sports therapy is important in projects that help refugees rebuild their self-confidence.” Is Overy ready to strap on the gloves again? “I don’t think I could find the mental motivation required to lift me to the level needed to get back in the ring,” he admits. “That said, the training was the best physical fitness I’ve ever done.” Executive Fight Night III. Tokyo Heterotopia After the March 11 disaster, director Akira Takayama staged a series of interactive "referendums" on nuclear power. Now one of Japan's most consistently provocative directors returns with a look at the human stories—many of them foreign—that lie beneath the surface of Tokyo. Participants are given a special mobile radio and guidebook and then visit a range of spaces from restaurants and parks, while hearing about the people who live there, many of them Asian exchange students. What we got here is an all-star Ocean’s 11 with illusionists. A woman (Noomi Rapace) scarred in an auto accident black ma i ls her fel low d a m a ge d- s ou l ne i g hb or (C ol i n Farrell), a henchman for a local crime boss (Terrence Howard), into murdering the drunk who caused it. Well-intentioned but atrociously written and highly simplistic soap reduces the last two years of the Princess of Wales’s life to a tacky, hagiographic tabloid fantasy. Has to do with her love affair with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan, who, we are told, rejected Diana because of Muslim family values and understandable worries about her intense media baggage. Dodi? A rebound fling manipulatively aimed at making Hasnat jealous. Naomi Watts puts in a flawless if shallow impersonation, and there are some nice lonely-princess montages, but it all goes poof as soon as anyone says anything. (113 min)

k now what you’re thinking: Japan c o u l d n ’ t p o s s i b ly make yet another romantic drama about a damaged woman who lea r ns to love again, could they? ( Yo u we r e t h i n k i n g that right?) Well, yes—it could. Toho’s newest “blockbuster,” Kiyoku Yawaku, is based on the 13-volume manga by Ryo Ikuemi. Given the book sold 2.95 million copies, Toho might be right in thinking they have a market for this schlock. Add to that new Japanese superstar actress Masami Nagasawa and you have the building blocks of a boho box office. Kanna (Nagasawa) lost her high school sweetheart to a terrifying car accident and has been unable to love ever since. Jump eight years into the future and enter Roku (Masaki Okada), a handsome and passionate young man who falls for Kanna and will do anything to win her. The flick hits on all the familiar points and suggests a version of the tired “pure love” (“How does he know what I’m feeling?”). Can she heal enough to embrace love? You guess. (127 min.) Polished but clearly promotional do c u me nt a r y by s o c i a l-re a l i s t fiction filmmaker (and unabashed fan) Shane Meadows (This is England, Dead Man’s Shoes) about the resurrection and phenomenally successful reunion tour of the legendary band. The group’s dissolution in acrimony 16 years earlier and the ensuing court battles are mentioned but not dwelt upon. This will delight the group’s obviously avid followers and probably baffle anyone else (me) not intimately involved in the '90s Manchester indie-rock scene. Still, it’s well put together, and I liked it that Meadows includes some complete songs. (97 min)

If this sounds a bit depressing to you, you have no idea! Despite the fine acting and a few moments of forced camaraderie, this somewhat talky flick is a downer on a level that you really need to be a Brit to enjoy. (92 min)

A pair of teenage hitpersons (Alexis Bledel and Saoirse Ronan) is flummoxed by their latest target: a world-weary, cancer-ridden guy in trouble with the Mob who isn’t afraid of death (a magnificent James Gandolfini). None of this is of course the least bit plausible, and that’s artsy fartsy intentional. But the lack of dramatic credibility makes it hard to care, and despite a few magical Gandolfini moments, there is little depth here. Japanese title: Violet & Daisy: Tenshi no Shokeinin. (88 min)

In this messy political potboiler, alcoholic low-rent P.I. and disgraced cop Mark Wahlberg is asked by the oily NYC mayor (Russell Crowe) to follow his cheating trophy wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones), while police commissioner Jeffrey Wright looks on skeptically. With a cast like this, how could you go wrong? Well, start with a preposterous central conceit, edit it with a chainsaw and cut drop some scenes entirely, just to assure complete incoherence. Then stir in some moral ambiguity and a few suspect coincidences. Some effective scenes elevate this to an entertaining diversion, but overall: broken movie. (109 min)

ore than 20 years after England’s premiere surreal comedy troupe lost one of its founding members, fans can revisit his life with the animated film A Liar’s Autobiography: The Untrue Story of Monty Python’s Graham Chapman. So why now? “Partly because we have only just discovered the tapes he left behind,” says Ben Timlett (pictured, right, with co-director Jeff Simpson). Timlett grew up around Monty Python, literally, after he discovered that his classmate was the son of Terry Jones, but was too young to know Chapman, who died of cancer in 1989. “When we did a documentary series on them, we got the sense of what an enigma Graham is,” he recalls. “He is sort of the forgotten Python, as he didn’t have the opportunity the others had to do what they wanted later on.” The tapes, an early attempt at an audio book, resurfaced, allowing Timlett and his team to mix Chapman’s voice with 3D animation from 14 different studios. “Because Graham goes into such incredible flights of fancy, we thought we could switch styles to emphasize that,” the director explains. “And it is a way of trying to get the tone of where he was in his life at the time.” And Chapman’s life went through major shifts of tone, from studying medicine to battling alcoholism to being one of the first British celebrities to come out as gay on a TV show his mother happened to be watching. The surviving Pythons lent their voices to the project, as did fan Cameron Diaz, who is cast in the role of Sigmund Freud. A Liar’s Autobiography will be released in Japan November 23. Kevin Mcgue

A Palestinian and Israeli family discover their sons were switched at birth when the hospital was bombed. The boys are able to come to terms with the news, but it tears at the other members of the families… A feature-length documentary on a single department store may sound like little more than an extended commercial, but Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s uses interviews with Karl Lagerfeld, Martha Stewart, Joan Rivers and other to make the point that the 5th Ave. institution is the center of New York life as well as international fashion. A bit on the decadent side are smoothies bursting with fresh fruit and topped with softserve ice cream. Offerings are reasonably priced considering the portion sizes, which probably explains the lines rivaling those of Mickey D’s at lunchtime. Take out? C’est bon!

Now they have launched an English language site (en.cookpad.com). So far, only a fraction of the 1.5 million Japanese recipes have been translated, but the site is growing quickly to included dishes such as “My Ginger Pork with Plenty of Onions” and “Skin And All Kabocha Croquettes” and a host of bento items. Recipe categories include regions of Japan and dishes made with particular cookware such as tajine or silicone steamers. There are handy conversion charts and cooking instructions are given in text as well as user snaps, rather than the polished photos on other cooking portals that only make your attempt look bad. The site is smartphone compatible, so you can check it as you shop for ingredients.

avid Chiddo, the local mastermind behind hot spots like Cicada and Beacon, has hit it out of the ballpark with Tokyo’s newest barbecue restaurant, Smokehouse. Chiddo is a native New Yorker and some Southerners might question his skills on the grill. But his time spent researching, testing and tasting recipes seems to more than make up for his birthplace. Authentic American smoked barbecue, typically using hickory, is done in several styles at Smokehouse. “There’s more meat on back ribs than spare ribs,” says Chiddo, so they do a Kansas-style back rib (¥2,200) with a genuinely spicy rub and is sauced before hitting the grill. While some expect the meat on ribs to fall off the bone, Chiddo says that authentic barbecue shouldn’t. The chopped pork shoulder (¥1,700) is done Carolina-style with a pepper and apple vinegar sauce, while the beef brisket (¥1,800) is also a dry rub—but Texas-style and enhanced with an espresso glaze that adds depth and richness. Even the chicken wings (¥900) on the appetizer menu are smoked and not deep-fried. And the bacon for the iceberg wedge salad (¥1,100) is twice smoked and served with a peppery blue cheese dressing. All barbecue dishes are served with your choice of four different sauces—the essence of any true ‘que. There is an umami-rich “Porter Pepper” sauce made with beer and molasses and a tangy “Carolina Vinegar” version with chili and honey. The “House Pit” sauce is tomato based and sweetened

CRAFT BEER IN JAPAN: THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE

ark Meli, a professor of cross-cultural studies at Kansai University in Osaka, has tasted over 1,700 varieties of ji-biru, or Japanese craft beer. As an exchange student living in a dormitory in Kyoto, Meli first developed a taste for Belgian Duvel and other European brews introduced to him by a dorm buddy. Japan’s beer, though, was to him, “… expensive and usually not very interesting.” While on a number of sabbaticals researching European approaches to the study of Japanese culture, friends in Belgium, Austria,

Since they’re not available for takeaway (yet!), the restaurant is the only place to get your smackers on some. Side dishes (¥400) are as you would find back home in barbecue country, with creamy mac-ncheese, tomatoes with okra cooked al dente and fresh spinach in a light cream sauce. Their down-home corn bread is rich with butter and honey—crispy on the outside and dense in the middle. The menu is big with offerings for everyone, including catfish and chips (¥1,000), burgers (¥1,500), salads (from ¥1,100), and even a kid’s menu with mac-n-cheese, chicken fingers and Yamagata hot dogs (all with fries or potato salad, ¥800). Of course, there is a host of American-style desserts including pecan pie, warm apple crumble and banana cream pudding (from ¥650). As with other restaurants in the TY Harbor group there is an impressive beverage selection including their original microbrews (¥800) as well as a selection

Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary took him round to their local bars and brew pubs where he fell in love with their traditional lagers and became consumed with a new research topic. When he settled back in Kyoto, he thought he would have to return to drinking the bland lagers of the big Japanese brewers—then he tasted a stellar Ginga Kogen weizen purchased at a shop in his neighborhood. He’s spent the following six years immersed in the world of Japanese ji-biru and the result is Craft Beer in Japan: The Essential Guide, the first English-language book on Japanese craft beer. As its title suggests, this is not a treatise on the history of beer and brewing in Japan. Meli does spend a few pages introducing the history of beer in Japan, detailing it’s resemblance to sake production (rice wine is brewed very much like beer), dispelling the propaganda of the refined Japanese palette, explaining the economics and taxation of the drink (beer, happoshu and more) and dispensing some beer-related Japanese vocabulary; but the bulk of this pocketable guide is all about how and where to experience the joys of this country’s quality microbrews Those readers who just want to know what beers to try or to cross off their list will benefit from the “Best-of Lists” supplied right up front. No need to scour the book, Meli provides his

of domestic and imported craft beers (¥850). The restaurant also runs a guest beer program, changing the taps or bottles on a monthly basis. Currently, there are beers from Hokkaido, Hyogo, California and Oregon on tap. Whiskey-with-an-“e” aficionados will be thrilled to find a strong selection of bourbon, rye and other sour mashes (from ¥800). The shots are all served on the rocks with a side of water, a great way to taste whiskey as it should be and see how the H20 opens their flavors up. In the front of the restaurant is a bar area, perfect for meeting friends for some drinks and appetizers. The main dining room that overlooks the open kitchen is dotted with small tables and to top of the décor, ambient lighting hangs from the ceiling in what else—smoke-colored glass balls. A modern country music soundtrack plays during the day, but after the sun goes down it’s all Delta blues. When the weather is good the back wall of windows opens up onto a residential street. Smokehouse is a well-oiled (and sauced!) machine that offers great value for money— although your vegetarian friends might beg to differ. J/E Menu in Japanese & English

The rest of the book is a guide to over 219 breweries in Japan, from Hokkaido to Okinawa, complete with ratings, origins, full contact details and independent tasting notes. Meli also lists the big four and their premium beers with tasting notes, as most are bound to down them on occasion. He caps off the book with recommendations for 136 bars, pubs, taprooms markets and shops to buy and drink quality Japanese microbrew. If you love quality beer, this is an easily recommended book to stash in your attaché or backpack. My Japanese was super basic and we could hardly have a conversation at first because I was self-conscious about my Japanese... I also started working in an izakaya which has helped loads with my vocabulary and given me many new food experiences I would never have dared to try otherwise... I don’t understand how people have such a hard time finding people willing to speak to them in Japanese in the big cities. Hang out with Japanese people who speak no English. Ask them to not speak English to you because you want to get better. It’s not a hard thing. I’d say you’re just not motivated enough, honestly.—Ramsay

ou are between a rock and a hard place and need to get to, say, Ebisu from Otemachi for an important meeting. There is no direct connection; several trains are needed. As you near a ticket gate en route, you have your Suica in your hand. Invariably, the person in front of you does not and neither does he/ she move to the side. A man pats himself down like an airport security check; a woman fumbles in her purse. If you push past, you are a rude gaijin. If you don’t, you’re a late gaijin. In either case, you have confirmed expectations.
