new moon Growing up in the ’90s, there were few cartoons that more defined the way the rest of the world saw Japan than Sailor Moon. The titular character’s miniskirt-andbow costume came to define Japanese schoolgirls in the global imagination, while the series’ action scenes, powerful female characters and eye-catching magical transformations introduced a whole generation of girls and boys to Japanese animation. This July, in celebration of the franchise’s 20th anniversary, Sailor Moon is returning with an all-new animated series entitled Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal, which is being promoted as closer in tone to the romantic atmosphere of the original Japanese comic book than the original series, which was adapted for an all-ages audience. The Sailor Moon character designs have received a total revamp, with body proportions and costume details closer to the manga’s style, though still maintaining the basic looks of Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars et. al. that fans of the original anime know and love. While the new series is again being produced by Toei Animation, the creative talent involved is completely new, bringing in director Munehisa Sakai (Suite Pretty Cure, One Piece Film Strong World) and a team with credits ranging from Naruto to Ultraman to provide a fresh perspective for a new generation. Even the original voices have been replaced, with only Sailor Moon’s original Japanese voice actress, Kotono Mitsuishi, returning. Quirky Japanese all-girl pop group Momoiro Clover Z will be providing vocals for the opening and closing themes. A M A ASK METROPOLIS ANYTHING Dear AMA, I have a history of sexual abuse, starting from my own father. It seems to follow me wherever I go... I moved to Japan several years ago and I recently changed jobs. I really like this new job and I think there’s a future in it for me, but I’m being sexually harassed by my immediate manager. It’s nothing too serious right now—touching my arms and thighs, kissing my cheek at company outings, checking me out and saying I look nice. Maybe because I have a history of sexual abuse, even these small things make me feel incredibly uncomfortable. But I’m also worried that this will escalate if I don’t say something. And that’s the problem... I'm too scared to say anything. I’ve tried speaking up in the past and nobody believed me—and I had to quit my part-time job. Why me? Is it the way I dress? The way I look? Am I giving off mixed signals without realizing it? I really don’t want to lose this job, but I don’t want to be around my manager. The office is 98 percent men, and if I can’t stand up for myself now, I’m afraid everyone will soon take advantage of me. I tried telling my Japanese friends, but they told me that it’s normal and their bosses also touch

them, and there’s nothing we can do. Is this really normal? —Looking for Answers Dear Looking, We passed your question on to the good people at TELL. Here’s what they had to say... Thank you for having the courage to write and share your story with us. We do not believe you are crazy—and it is something serious. The unwanted acts you are experiencing from your boss are sexual harassment, which understandably can make working there extremely uncomfortable and even frightening. It is not something you have to put up with even if others tell you it is normal; it is wrong. Unfortunately, as of yet, Japan does not have a statute that provides victims of sexual harassment with protection. Instead, there is something called Article 11 of Japan’s Equal Employment Opportunity Law, which states that a company cannot discriminate based on gender, and requires that the employer take steps to make the workplace free from sexual harassment. Sexual harassment takes place in one of two forms: “retaliation-type” (unfair treatment such as being fired for refusing a co-worker or boss’ sexual advances) or “environment-type,” which is what you are describing: unwanted sexual touching that is impacting your ability and desire to continue to work there. To get a better understanding of your legal status and the options you have, it is best to speak with a lawyer. Our telephone counselors can help you find one who might be able to help.

English camps for Tohoku kids by Danielle Ausems

anbaro Miyagi is the English “translation” of the Miyagi Reconstruction Assistance Center, or Miyagi Fukko Shien Center. The center has been involved in a variety of assistance-based activities, ranging from goods distribution shortly after the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami to organizing and running international English camps. Begun in the summer of 2012, these camps are aimed at providing children in the Kanto and Tohoku regions with a chance to practice English and interact with people from international backgrounds, with a focus on children affected by the 2011 earthquake. Roughly ten percent of children attending the camps were directly affected by the tsunami, either living in temporary housing or (still) taking refuge in the Kanto area. These children can attend free of charge thanks to corporate donations and participation fees paid by other children (¥24,800 each). From the time children arrive until the bus ride home, each moment at camp is crammed full of

Your belief that sexual harassment is something that follows you is not a simple question to answer. You briefly mentioned that you are a survivor of sexual abuse at the hands of your father. Research shows that all too often, survivors of childhood trauma experience something called “revictimization,” which can involve other traumatic experiences of abuse in the course of their lives. Often feelings of guilt and self-blame are experienced, in the sense that a survivor may believe that they “asked for it” or “must like it.” Also, on a very basic level it has to do with a survivor employing dissociative coping methods that helped keep them alive through past experiences, which may minimize social cues that would usually alert them to possible danger. It is important to know that this is not your fault. Talking to someone who understands trauma can be helpful. The telephone counselors at the Lifeline can help you with this, but I also recommend reaching out to a therapist specializing in child sexual abuse for adults. We have face-to-face therapists at TELL who can help you on this journey.

These range from outdoor and indoor games, making traditional Japanese crafts and simple English lessons to a campfire dance and a spooky night walk. Kanto camps are hosted at either the Saitama Prefecture Youth Outdoor Center or the Chiba Prefecture Youth Outdoor Center; Tohoku camps are held at the National Hanayama Youth Outdoor Learning Center in Miyagi Prefecture. Each camp is limited to 100 elementary school children, who are then divided into nine teams, each led by three foreign volunteers and one Japanese volunteer with conversational English ability.

It’s an exhausting but exhilarating 36 hours for them, starting Saturday bright and early at 7am near one of four major stations (Ueno, Omiya or Chiba station for Kanto; Sendai station for Tohoku). After a quick review of the rules and goals (sent via email well in advance of the camp date), the staff get ready for the children, who start to arrive in droves by 8am. Volunteers hail from as close as China to as far as Argentina or Egypt; previous experience with children is not required. While the camps aim to foster an international spirit, the main goal is to bring a smile to everyone’s faces, children and volunteers alike. Camps run weekly throughout spring, summer and fall, with several occurring concurrently during peak seasons. Saturday night accommodation, four camp meals and round-trip transportation from the central starting station to the camp are provided. Transportation reimbursement to the starting station is limited to ¥4,000, and preference will be given to volunteers who live locally. Headliners: Franz Ferdinand, Arcade Fire, Jack Johnson What was Kanye West’s loss was the audience’s gain when the rapper canceled his booking and was replaced by Canadian art rockers Arcade Fire. Notwithstanding Eminem’s appearance at Fuji Rock in 2001, hip-hop has often been a somewhat awkward fit for Japan’s mother of all rock festivals. Atlanta’s irrepressible, reunited Outkast, who close out the White Stage on Sunday, look to be the exception that proves the rule. Arcade Fire’s orchestral indie rock will fill the Green Stage’s massive outdoor amphitheater in a way that solo artists struggle to, making them, along with the equally ambitious Flaming Lips, the headliners to watch for. Jack Johnson has the unenviable task of following the Lips—he’s personable enough, but perhaps better suited to a sunny afternoon slot rather than festival closer. Meanwhile, Friday headliners Franz Ferdinand faded from view years ago, and would be a better fit for the smaller, enclosed Red Marquee. Kiwi teen Lorde hasn’t made the huge impact in Japan she’s made elsewhere, but it’s safe to say that the Red Marquee will be bursting at the seams by the time the young goth enchantress headlines there on Sunday. Mushi no Hoshi means roughly “Insect Stars” and the work appears to have an outer space insectoid theme, a concept for which the music of alien-obsessed electronic music pioneer Jeff Mills should be perfectly suited. � Expat Irish rock outfit Johnsons Motorcar are celebrating the release of their first full album Hey Ho Johnny!! Welding together Scottish-American Martin Johnson’s fiddle, Irishman Blacko Muiri’s guitar, Australian Coleman’s bass and the effervescent Rinamame’s drums, the quartet is a dynamo of Celtic music updated with more than a dash of rock ‘n’ roll. Art and life through the eyes of a child at the Mori By C.B. Liddell

ooking at things the usual way can get a tad tedious, so one of the functions of contemporary art is to put a new spin on things, getting us to look at the world in a new light or from a different angle. While most of us don’t actually trust contemporary artists to put on this new spin, we do trust children, so for the latest show at Roppongi’s Mori Art Museum, the curators have decided to funnel a lot of contemporary art through our soft spot for kids. The result of this is the opposite of the old admonit ion to “put away chi ldish t hings.” Through various artworks, installations and videos we are invited into the world of children, which is more or less our own world viewed from waist height, and with a lot more directness. While some artworks draw you in, others leave you on the outside scratching your head. What to make of Chinese photo-artist Zhang O’s “Daddy & I” series? Zhang took portraits of young Chinese girls who had been adopted by American families, purposely leaving out the mothers. This gives the portraits of older Western men with prepubescent or teenaged Chinese girls an initially sinister aspect, especially one photo, where the girl’s fashion is a bit too glamorous for an innocent pre-teen. On closer examination these sleazy

ost of the movies we’ve seen on the subject of artificial intelligence, starting probably with HAL 9000 in 2001, A Space Odyssey and continuing to Johnny Depp’s Transcendence, tend to focus on machine sentience going awry, often disastrously. But fabulist Spike Jonze, who directed Being John Malkovich and Adaptation and is doing his own writing this time, here explores without judging how such technology might be used in the near future in our increasingly plugged-in yet disconnected society. The story is about an introverted man (a terrifically convincing Joaquin Phoenix) who downloads what is called a “personal OS” that speaks in the breathless tones of an unseen Scarlett Johansson. They pal around; get to know each other. And he falls in love. She draws him out of himself, and he begins to appreciate the world around him. This could have gone in so many wrong directions, from glib, cheap-shot romcom to preposterous thriller. But Jonze plays it straight. It’s audacious, yes, but also deeply sincere and emotionally plausible. This meditation on what it is to be human is modest in scale, approachable and never less than compelling. Can machines think? B ut not i f filmmaker Leanne Pooley has anything to say about it. She has combined archival footage and photos with some welldone reenactment techniques (Chad Moffitt is a dead ringer for Sir Hillary) and audio interviews (refreshingly, no talking heads) to come up with this tense, you-are-there adventure film. Captures not only the thrill of the conquest but also the incredible fear and uncertainty that led up to it. Japanese title: Tenku no Itadaki Rekishi wo Kaeta Everest Hatsu-tocho. (90 min)

Docudrama based on the book Four Days in November focuses on the responses of the doctors, nurses, federal agents and witnesses to the 1963 Kennedy assassination. The title is the name of the Dallas Hospital to which the president, and later his murderer, were rushed. The film is workmanlike and captures the heartbreak of the story, which remains absorbing even today. It’s interesting if at times gut-wrenching. But it lacks much narrative purpose, the writing’s flat, and it offers no new insights or theories, conspiracy or otherwise. Indeed this film’s main mystery is why it was made at all. Telling you how that’s so would constitute a spoiler, but the title’s a hint. Liked the dialogue and the acting; hated being jerked around. (137 min)

Haven’t seen Park Chan-wook ’s 2003 existential horror cult movie, so I can’t say whether it deserved the dubious Hollywood remake treatment. But I’m pretty sure that Spike Lee was not the director to do it. After being imprisoned for 20 years for no reason, a miscast Josh Brolin is as inexplicably released, whereupon he embarks on a brutal quest to identify his tormentors and exact revenge. Lee gets in a few interesting stylistic licks, but he’s in work-for-hire mode. Also Samuel L. Jackson, Elizabeth Olsen and Sharlto Copley. Twisted, grim and gruesome, call this feel-bad movie an accomplished disappointment. (104 min)

This bit of Luc Besson Euro-fluff was intended, I think, to be an action-comedy version of Taken, but perhaps Kevin Costner didn’t get the memo about the comedy part. And it has to be said that as over-the-hill ass-kickers go, he’s no Liam Neeson. The pedestrian story line has Kev as a brooding, terminally ill CIA hit man lured back for one last kill, all while he’s trying to win back the affection of his whiny teenage daughter for not being around, etc. Tedious, sloppy, full of aimless subplots and superfluous characters. Not even dumb fun. There are plenty of better ways to kill two hours. Japanese title: Last Mission. (113 min)

JODOROWSKY’S DUNE

Chilean visionary Alejandro Jodorowsky tried and failed in the ’70s to film Frank Herbert’s fantasy novel. This wildly entertaining, educational and inspiring documentary features extensive interviews with the director, at 84 still a handsome, charismatic and clearly quite mad creative genius, gleefully reminiscing, without bitterness, about what might have been. H. R. Giger was on board, as was Salvador Dali. Too unhinged for Hollywood, it was nonetheless destined to become one of the most influential films never made, and its DNA lives on in such blockbusters as Alien, Blade Runner and Star Wars. But the resultant entity turns out to be dangerously focused on accumulating ever more knowledge and power. Ho hum. Any dramatic tension in this meandering and humorless sci-fi cautionary tale is sabotaged straight off by letting us know at the beginning where all this will end up. It’s scientifically, philosophically and logically shaky, with way more artifice than intelligence. (119 min)

Apparently a second battle was raging while Leonidas and 300 rabid Spartans were off getting ma s s acre d at T her mopylae i n 2006’s loopy 300, this one at sea and with just as much yelling, CGIenhanced six-pack abs and even a few bare boobs. The bad 3-D is used mostly for repetitious slo-mo strawberry-jam blood splatter (okay, we get it). Sullivan Stapleton is a poor substitute for Gerard Butler, and that can’t be a good thing. Thank the gods for Eva Green, seemingly the only actor aware of how campy all this is, and her over-the-top portrayal of a hot and horny naval commander in a Catwoman outfit. Now, defending the Bible has never been an aspiration, but as a movie, this is overlong, slow moving, and lacks any real sense of danger. Noah, a raving patriarch created in the image of a seriously silly Russell Crowe, would be locked up today. A rare misstep for otherwise admired director Darren Aronofsky. The movie opens, aptly enough, in an open grave. A not-dead Sharlto Copley ( District 9) awakes amid hu nd re d s of cor p s e s , w it h no memory of who he is or how he got there. This blank slate finds a nearby house containing a quartet of uninteresting fellow amnesiacs and a mute Chinese girl. It’s a premise ripe with promise, but alas unfulfilled, doomed by generic performances (except for Josie Ho), poor plotting, and a general lack of direction. Plot furtherance is provided by numerous sepia flashbacks as the movie trudges toward its notvery-surprising Big Reveal. Maudlin, hard to watch, and boring. Japanese title: Open Grave Kansen. THE HOST

Stephenie Meyer, who defanged vampires and declawed were wolves with all that Twilight tedium, now turns to wasting your time and Saoirse Ronan’s talent with this lame sci-fi story. Alien parasites h ave t a ke n ove r mo s t hu m a n bodies, see, but this girl named Melanie has somehow retained her identity, and now shares her bod with the alien. A covert band of humans provides several hunky males to kiss in the rain. It’s as though Nicholas Sparks wrote Invasion of the Body Snatchers by way of All of Me. Awkwardly structured and atrociously written, it would be funny if it weren’t such a flaccid, dismal slog. Japanese title: The Host: Utsukushiki Shinryakusha. (125 min)

NEED FOR SPEED

After his success as Jesse in TV’s phenomenal Breaking Bad, Aaron Paul had his pick of pictures with which to launch his film career. True, I didn’t expect much from an adaptation of a video game directed by a former stuntman, but the generic car chases are okay-ish, and it gets points for not resorting to CGI. But in virtually every other regard—trite storyline, awful script, embarrassingly unfunny comic relief, length—this thin, literal car wreck of a movie is running on empty, a total watch-watcher that makes those Fast & Furious flicks look like art films. Paul should have kept looking. (126 min)

THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL

Gustave, a legendary concierge (a rare comedic perf by Ralph Fiennes) at the title hostelry in a fictitious eastern European country. He’s disciplined, slightly ridiculous and a bit of a scoundrel. It’s a comically complex contraption, enchanting and absurdly entertaining, but there’s heft under the confection and a sober acknowledgement of the events looming over Europe in the next decade. X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

In a dark, apocalyptic present, Professor X and Magneto (Patrick Stewa r t & Ia n McKel len ) send Wo lve r i n e ( H u g h Ja c k m a n , carrying the film) back in time to convince their younger selves (James McAvoy & Michael Fassbender) to join forces in preventing Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) from assassinating Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage), an act that led to their current loselose state of affairs. Got that? Okay, this clearly requires at least a cursory knowledge of 15 years of these mutant movies. Nice selfaware comic relief, notably a terrific “Time in a Bottle” sequence that was actually applauded. Way better in 2-D. (131 min)

ad Tea is another film which had its premiere at the Tokyo I nternational Film Festival last year. It addresses the vagaries of romance for a host of different primary characters each trying to figure out what love is (aren’t we all?). Director Rikiya Imaizumi has crafted a thoughtprovoking if curious piece that hovers between melodrama and light comedy. Shin (Seiji Okabe) hopes to become a director. He lives with Yuko (Chihiro Nagao) but has a relationship with Midori (Aya Kunitake). As a counterpoint, his friend Waseda (Tomohisa Takeda), who’s committed to his girlfriend Sonoko (Kayo Hoshino), is suddenly taken with a shop assistant and dumps his girlfriend in the hope the new woman will have him. Natsu (Chika Uchida) endures an abusive relationship yet rationalizes that it has its good points, too. Bon (Takuya Fuji), the manager of a coffee shop, is in love with waitress Tanako (Fumiko Aoyagi), who rebuffs him constantly and has the hots for Shin. The characters muse on love and occasionally take small steps toward happiness. Overall, Imaizumi has formed a reasonably realistic and entertaining ensemble drama with some insight into human behavior. (120 min.)

ith Blu-ray quickly overtaking DVDs and 4K Ultra HD TVs creating the need for yet another format, most people hardly remember VHS tapes. Not so the fanatical collectors in Rewind This!, a documentary on the cultural impact of the invention that allowed people to watch movies at home and control their own TV schedules. It was a worldwide revolution that started in Japan. “I wanted to have an international element to the film, and Japan seemed the best place to go,” director Josh Johnson told Metropolis after the Tokyo premiere. The doc uses archival ads to recount the history of two Japanese companies, Sony and JVC, as they fought the war of Betamax vs. VHS (for those who missed it, Sony lost). After a Kickstarter campaign to raise airfare to Tokyo, Johnson interviewed Tom Mes, a writer for the Japanese film site Midnight Eye. Mes recounts how Japanese filmmakers embraced direct-to-video films, called “V-Cinema.” “It is interesting that Japanese directors would go back and forth between V-Cinema and major films,” Johnson says. “In America, if a film goes directly to video that is a real stigma.” Prolific performer Shoko Nakahara, who’s interviewed in the doc and attended the premiere, made a more personal statement: “If it weren’t for VHS, I would never have been an actress.” Rewind This! will screen at at Uplink in Shibuya from July 27. he comedy-drama English Vinglish (pictured) reveals the trials and triumphs of an ordinary Indian housewife, who decides that going to New York to take language classes is the only way to stop her family from making fun of her English skills. The dialogue is in Hindi and highly inflected English, but we can all relate to the struggles of a stranger in a strange land trying to be understood. On from June 28 at Cine Switch Ginza (4-4-5 Ginza, Chuoku; cineswitch.com)... The annual Festival du Film Français au Japon returns June 27-30 in Yurakucho. Highlights this year include Yves Saint Laurent, a biopic of the legendary designer, and La Cour de Babel, a documentary on what happens when 24 students from 24 countries meet in a French classroom (Yurakucho Asahi Hall and Toho Cinemas Nichigeki; unifrance.jp/festival)… Even more French films can be seen at the Jacques Tati Retrospective, which has been extended due to popular demand through July 4 at Image Forum in Shibuya (2-10-2 Shibuya, Shibuya-ku; imageforum.co.jp). Surf and turf 41 floors above sea level By Jeff W. Richards

itting at Fish Bank Tokyo with a prime evening window seat, it’s hard not to feel on top of the world. Located on the 41st floor of Shiodome City Center, the stunning Blade Runner-esque cityscape is amplified by the unusually high floor-to-ceiling windows and vaulted post-and-beam decor. The dim nighttime lighting makes the whole city yours to behold. We rolled in one wet and foggy night, eager for the storied view and a taste of the venue’s oftrecommended menu. We slipped out of our wet clothes and into glasses of some dry white wine (¥852), a slightly citrusy Sauvignon Blanc f rom C a l l away v i ne yard in California, and one glass of Moët & Chandon Brut Imperial (¥1,700) for someone pairing their drinks with the view before ordering the seafood platter (¥7,410). Fresh oysters, crab legs, ebi (prawn) and salmon roe arrived over ice on two plates—but the standout was the fresh uni (sea urchin) flan served in the shell. This was not your ordinary mushy orange kaitenzushi-style uni. Chilled and a deep tan color, with a firm creamy texture and a taste like a soft pâté, it disappeared almost as fast as the crab. A brief interlude and another glass of wine later, our salad courses showed up. The smoked bacon and crispy potato salad (¥1,722) was nothing special, with a few greens and a light oil vinaigrette over crisped slices of spud, but the crab cakes with tomato mousseline (¥2,160) were done well with a crisp deep-fried coating that cracked and crunched satisfyingly as it broke open to reveal the simply seasoned crab meat stuffing. Splurging more than a little, we decided we had to try the Matsuzaka steak (¥16,000/200g or ¥8,000/100g) just to say we’d had it. Unbelievably marbled and soft, the meat practically dissolved on the tongue. Those who like Japanese-style wagyu beef will be impressed, but steak purists may find the Matsuzaka somewhat too marbled— melting in the mouth, the lingering flavor is one of rendered fat rather than a grilled cut of meat. The wagyu fillet (¥6,667/200g or ¥3,435/100g), on the other hand, was superb: lean and grilled

to a perfect medium, crusted with a layer of charbroiled salt and pepper, it was the last thing we expected at this Tokyo seafood establishment—and a far better value. We ordered a strawberry Bavarian, a fresh chou cream (both ¥1,148), a small chocolate soufflé (¥1,333) and espressos (¥502) to finish off the meal. Absolutely stuffed and satisfied, table talk receded. We were once again entranced by the near 360-degree night view of the city as a heavy mist rolled in to shroud the nearby skyscrapers and envelop us even more in our postprandial fog.

have a confession to make: my husband is Japanese. Back when we first started dating, I didn’t think it was a problem. After all, a lot of my Western friends were dating or married to Japanese women. Intercultural dating in Japan was becoming normal, I thought. My husband and I got married in America and shortly thereafter moved to Japan—where I proceeded to run headfirst into all sorts of unintentionally offensive questions and comments. Here are a few of my favorites: 1. “Are you really OK with a Japanese man?” Any online forum on families in Japan will offer some variation of the comment, “Japan is so sexist—no wonder Japanese women prefer to marry foreigners.” It’s a commonly stated opinion. And I’m not going to argue with the idea that Japan is sexist. However, people have this idea so fixed in their heads that when they meet a foreign woman (me) happily married to a Japanese man (my husband), they have to press the issue. People a re more t ha n t hei r nationalit y. And demonizing the

Japanese male population as “sexist pigs who cheat on their wives and have gender images stuck in the ’60s” is pretty offensive. I shouldn’t have to justify my decision to marry outside my ethnicity and nationality—especially to other Westerners who don’t seem to have a problem with their own Japanese wives. How to respond: “Yes, I am. I love [insert name] for who he is—and that has nothing to do with his ethnicity.” 2. “Why marry a Japanese man when you could just marry a white man?” I get this question a lot from Japanese women—even strangers on the train. They tell me that they want to meet a white, American man (“... and do you have any friends you can introduce me to?”) because Japanese men don’t respect them. Western men seem to be this mythical dating specimen that grants “Happily Ever After” within three dates. A lot of Japanese men do not respect t heir w ives. But a lot of Western men don’t respect their wives, either. By discounting an entire nationality (or only focusing

on dating one particular ethnicity), you’re losing out on a lot of viable candidates—and might miss the person who would actually be “the one” for you. How to respond: Same as before: “I love [insert name] for who he is— and that has nothing to do with his ethnicity.” 3. “But, you know, can he really satisfy you in the bedroom?” Excuse me. Did you just ask a stranger about the size of her husband’s penis? This conversation is over. How to respond: Just walk away. You have better things to do than talk penis sizes with some stranger. 4. “Are you translating for her?” About a third of the time when my husband and I enter an establishment, the attendant will turn to my husband and ask, “Are you translating for her?” It’s become our inside joke. “Don’t take it so personally,” he tells me. But it ’s h a rd not to t a k e it personally when most store attendants assume your spouse is your

My Western friends with Japanese wives get this question maybe once every six months—compared to our once or twice a month. It’s hard not to interpret these remarks this way. How to respond: “No, he is my [husband/boyfriend].” And the questions my husband gets asked? 1. “Does she make you kiss her in public?” My husband is a normal Japanese salaryman working at a normal Japanese company. His coworkers are fascinated by our relationship and want to know if I’m pulling him off into alleyways every five minutes for an impromptu make-out session. How to respond: “Yes, I kiss her in public, but not because she makes me. I kiss her because I want to.” 2. “Do you have to hug her every day and say ‘I love you’ all the time?” Marriage is about compromise—something people seem to forget. I do laundry three times a week because my husband likes it when the house smells like freshly washed clothes. He sends me “I love you more than squirrels love nuts” and gossipy “You won’t believe what X-san did today!” text messages. He needs freshly laundered clothes as much as I need open communication and affection. How to respond: “I tell her I love her as many times a day as I can. As they say in America, ‘Happy wife, happy life.’” Curiosity doesn’t give anyone a free pass to ask personal, awkward or prejudiced questions about someone’s life choices. My husband and I chose to spend our lives together. Doesn’t that already tell you everything you need to know?
