Chuyến bay cuối cùng của US Airways với Mohawk và Lake Central. Vào những năm 80, hãng này lại tiếp tục hợp nhất với Pacific Southwest, và đổi tên lần nữa thành US Airways năm 1997 trước khi sáp nhập với American West năm 2005.

Chuyến bay Flight 1939 từ San Francisco tới Philadelphia cuối tuần qua là hành trình cuối cùng của hãng dưới cái tên US Airways, trước khi sáp nhập vớiAmericanAirlines. Ngay sau khi máy bay cất cánh hôm 16/10, American Airlines đã hợp nhất hệ thống đặt vé của hai hãng hàng không. Và khi máy bay hạ cánh xuống Philadelphia, US Airways đã chính thức đi vào dĩ vãng. Kể từ đó cái tên US Airways chỉ còn trong ký ức và hoài niệm. Sau khi đáp xuống Philadelphia, tất cả những chiếc Airbus A321 vẫn được giữ nguyên màu sơn, chỉ phải xóa đi hàng chữ US Airways một thời ngang dọc, chở hành khách bay tới khắp nơi trên thế giới. American Airlines đã tổ chức các hoạt động ở mỗi điểm dừng để kỷ niệm sự kiện này. Hành khách trên chuyến bay cuối cùng đã nâng ly vì US Airways ngay trên khoang. "Chúng tôi muốn cảm ơn US Airways và những người đã giúp chúng tôi gây dựng hãng hàng không này", phát ngôn viên của American Airlines cho biết trên USA Today, "Hy vọng đây sẽ là một dịp đáng nhớ với cả khách hàng lẫn nhân viên."

Giờ đây, cái tên US Airways đã chính thức bị xóa sổ. Từ ngày 17/10, hệ thống đặt vé của US Airways chính thức ngừng hoạt động, sau đó tới lượt website của hãng, để nhập chung với American Airlines.

Ngay cả số hiệu máy bay cũng mang ý nghĩa đặc biệt. 1939 là năm đầu tiên All American Aviation - một hãng chuyên chở hàng hóa có trụ sở tại Pennsylvania đi vào hoạt động, mà sau này phát triển thành công ty hàng không Allegheny Airlines. Allegheny đổi tên thành USAir năm 1979, sau khi sáp nhập

Tuy nhiên, phải tới cuối năm 2016, tất cả máy bay mới có thể chuyển hết sang màu của American. Đồng phục tiếp viên cũng đến năm sau mới được đổi lại. Phát ngôn viên của hãng cho biết vẫn còn khá nhiều công việc nội bộ cần phải làm để hoàn tất thương vụ sáp nhập. Chuyến bay Flight 1939 có lượng đặt vé rất lớn. Khoang phổ thông gần như kín chỗ, còn hạng nhất đã cháy vé từ tháng 7. Hầu hết họ là những người thích đi máy bay và mong muốn góp mặt trong hành trình cuối cùng của US Airways.

Bài học Iraq buộc Obama thay đổi cam kết rút quân khỏi Afghanistan Jalalabad và Kandaha. Quyết định này được đưa ra sau nhiều tháng thảo luận giữa ông Obama, các nhà lãnh đạo Afghanistan, các viên chức Ngũ Giác Đài, các tư lệnh chiến trường, và các cố vấn Tòa Bạch Ốc. Họ đã cân nhắc về cách thức tốt nhất để tiếp tục hỗ trợ lực lượng Afghanistan, theo giới chức cao cấp của chính phủ Mỹ cho biết. Các nhà phân tích nhận định Tổng thống Mỹ Barack Obama từ bỏ cam kết rút quân khỏi Afghanistan do lo ngại đất nước này cũng sẽ rơi vào hỗn loạn, đổ máu như Iraq thời gian qua. Nhưng ông Obama quyết định từ bỏ và rút quân Mỹ về nước. Tuy nhiên do không có sự hiện diện của

người Mỹ, ông al-Maliki áp dụng hàng loạt chính sách đàn áp người Hồi giáo Sunni, thiên vị người Shiite, dẫn đến làn sóng bạo động dữ dội và các vụ tấn công đẫm máu. Khoảng trống mà lực lượng Mỹ để lại đã mở đường cho tổ chức khủng bố Nhà nước Hồi giáo (IS) trỗi dậy và chiếm nhiều vùng lãnh thổ tại Iraq. Đến nay, ông Obama đã phải triển khai trở lại 3,000 binh sĩ Mỹ tại Iraq để giúp chính phủ mới ở Baghdad chống IS. Và tình hình ở Afghanistan cũng tương tự. Sau nhiều năm giao tranh, lực lượng Taliban vẫn không bị tiêu diệt mà đang trỗi dậy trở lại, thậm chí mới đây gây chấn động khi chiếm thành phố Kunduz. IS cũng đang bắt đầu triển khai sức mạnh tạiAfghanistan. Do đó, ông Obama buộc phải duy trì lực lượng Mỹ tại đây để ngăn chặn cả Taliban và IS. Ông cho biết khác với chính quyền Iraq hồi năm 2011, chính quyền Afghanistan cũng bày tỏ thiện chí muốn người Mỹ giúp đỡ, do đó hai bên nhanh chóng đạt được thỏa thuận. NYT dẫn lời ông Stephen Hadley, cựu Cố vấn An ninh Quốc gia của ông Bush, đánh giá quyết định của ông Obama cũng sẽ giúp Đảng Dân chủ tránh được đòn công kích của Đảng Cộng hòa trong cuộc bầu cử Tổng thống năm 2016. Thời gian qua, Đảng Cộng hòa liên tục chỉ trích rằng vì ông Obama rút quân khỏi Iraq nên IS mới trỗi dậy.

"Ông Obama không muốn tạo gánh nặng cho bà Hillary Clinton (ứng cử viên Tổng thống hàng đầu của Đảng Dân chủ)" - ông Hadley cho biết. Với việc duy trì binh sĩ ở Afghanistan, ông Obama sẽ giúp người kế nhiệm mình không hứng thêm phiền toái từ Afghanistan đè lên hai gánh nặng lớn khác là xung đột Syria và Iraq. Một vài chuyên gia an ninh cho rằng số binh sĩ Mỹ trên chỉ có thể duy trì tình thế hiện nay ở Afghanistan, giúp nước này tránh nguy cơ rơi vào hỗn loạn như Iraq, chứ không đủ sức đập tan mối đe dọa Taliban. Dù vậy, nhiều nhà hoạt động phản đối chiến tranh rất thất vọng với quyết định của ông Obama. "Đây là một quyết định thảm họa" chuyên gia Phyllis Bennis thuộc Viện Nghiên cứu chính sách bày tỏ sự phản đối. Chính vì quan điểm phản đối chiến tranh và chấm dứt hai cuộc chiến Iraq và Afghanistan nên ông Obama mới được trao giải Nobel hòa bình. Tuy nhiên sau khi rời Toà Bạch Ốc vào năm 2017, ông sẽ vẫn là một vị Tổng thống chiến tranh. Các đồng minh NATO cũng đã cho thấy dấu hiệu họ muốn duy trì quân số hiện nay tại Afghanistan. Hơn 6,000 binh sĩ không phải là người Mỹ hiện đang tham gia vào sứ mạng kiên quyết hỗ trợ ở Afghanistan Resolute Support.

Bắt đầu được sản xuất từ đầu những năm 1990, đến nay, các chủng loại máy bay không người lái của Viện Kỹ thuật Phòng không - Không quân ngày càng hiện đại, phục vụ cho huấn luyện pháo cao xạ, tên lửa, máy bay và làm nhiệm vụ trinh sát. Viện Kỹ thuật Phòng không - Không quân là nơi sản xuất ra các loại máy bay không người lái đa chức năng, huấn luyện cho pháo cao xạ, tên lửa, máy bay và làm nhiệm vụ trinh sát, khảo sát, chụp ảnh...thay thế cho máy bay thế hệ đầu chỉ có thể làm mục tiêu cho pháo phòng không.

Đây được coi là đơn vị đầu tiên ở Việt Nam nghiên cứu, thiết kế, chế tạo và sản xuất các loại máy bay không người lái. Do được sử dụng trong các mục đích khác nhau nên máy bay được lắp các loại động cơ khác nhau. Máy bay được lắp động cơ cánh quạt để bay trinh sát ở tầm thấp, tốc độ chậm. Hay động cơ phản lực, cho phép bay với tốc độ lớn hơn, sử dụng trong huấn luyện bay, tên lửa. Máy bay được sản xuất, lắp ráp theo một quy trình khá tỉ mỉ.

Nhiều công đoạn phải làm trực tiếp bằng tay như sản xuất đuôi máy bay, sơn màu... Việc chế tạo phần vỏ máy bay không người lái cũng rất phức tạp và đòi hỏi độ chính xác cao, quyết định đến chất lượng của máy bay và viện vận hành. Máy bay sau khi được lắp ráp hoàn chỉnh sẽ được kiểm tra tại chỗ thông qua hệ thống điều khiển từ xa. Máy bay không người lái do Viện Kỹ thuật PK-KQ sản xuất có hai loại, một loại có thể cất cánh bằng cách chạy đà, với hệ thống càng được lắp đặt dưới thân và loại cất cánh nhờ hệ thống phóng.

Like I’m not gonna take that cup?” This is how Bob Brady sees the world: It’s us against them. And if you don’t get Bob

Brady, you don’t get Philly. “I could care less about Stephen Colbert—fuck Stephen Colbert,” he says. I don’t always agree with his backroom tactics, but I also have to concede that, every time he rescues a parade or the Dad Vail Regatta or a bike race from certain bankruptcy, just like every time his presence—and apparently only his presence—can get warring sides of labor/management disputes to find common ground, the guy is living his local patriotism. They’re not from Philly is how Bob Brady sees the world: It’s us against them. And if you don’t get Bob Brady, you don’t get Philly. I’ve written before that Brady’s view of the world strikes me as antiquated; his machine is essentially transactional. Things get done because favors are doled out, chits cashed in. In Bob Brady’s world, relationships trump all. No one will tell you that his word isn’t bankable. To political reformers, an ideology based on relationships can seem like it’s really just insular deal-making: One hand washes the other. It is government run for and by the connected, and the voting public knows the score: They don’t vote because they see it as a rigged game. But to Brady, there are principles involved. Cities are about competing interest groups fighting over ever-dwindling slices of the pie. And he’s there to make sure that, if you’re on his team, you get your share. And if you’re not on his team, he recruits you

by treating you like you are, no matter your party affiliation. In Washington, when he became Chairman of House Administration, he was responsible for overseeing members’ accounts. Democrats and Republicans alike would go to him with their travel or meal reimbursement requests, and he’d approve them all (sometimes ignoring the wishes of his leadership, which at times might have wanted to use reimbursement as a way to punish or persuade Republican members to their point of view). Why? Saying yes could only grow his power and influence by adding to his team. The irony is self-evident: The last big city Democratic party boss doesn’t have a politically partisan bone in his body. Second, Brady is as good on the issue of race as any politician I’ve seen— and that includes our first black president, Bill Clinton. “That’s because of sports,” he told me during his long car ride. “When I played football as a kid, if you caught a pass, I’d hug you no matter what color you were. You were my brother. If we’re on the same team, we’re brothers.”

Brady is the last big-city political boss in America thanks to the power of his relationships and the subjugation of his own ego. While John Street was proclaiming that “the brothers and sisters are in charge,” it was Brady who was still controlling the party’s thousands of foot soldiers and jobs. There’s stuff to make fun of in Brady, as the pundits have since the Pope’s visit. And there’s plenty to criticize, as I have over the years. But there’s also much to learn, if only we’d look for it.

C’est Si Bon or Tutto Bene? A French party and an Italian opera highlight Opera Philadelphia’s gala by HughE Dillon Opera Philadelphia celebrated the world of Parisian opulence, gilded fêtes, and one of the greatest love stories of all time at this black-tie gala. The celebration of the 2015-2016 season took place on the opening night of “La traviata.” A tent was erected outside of The Academy of Music, where a lively cocktail party was held, followed with a dinner catered by Jose Garces. After dinner, guests enjoyed “La traviata,” then returned to the tent for dessert and dancing until midnight.

And Then They Danced Philly notables were out in force to celebrate Mark Segal’s new book by HughE Dillon On Oct. 7, at the Independence Visitor Center in Center City, Mark Segal hosted a party to launch his new memoir “And Then I Danced: Traveling the Road to LGBT Equality.” Many of the city’s movers and shakers were on hand to fete Mark, and speakers including Jeff Gaurcino, Atlantic City Alliance, David L. Cohen, Comcast, and Gov. Ed Rendell, and Democratic mayoral candidate Jim Kenney. Others spotted in the crowd included Ken Smukler, Councilman Mark Squilla, Jonathan A. Saidel, D. The Owls Are For Real Coaches and players refuse complacency as they eye infinitely bright future possibilities By Jeremy Treatman

T

his season’s Temple Owls don’t know much about the past struggles of the football program. “And that’s probably a good thing,” says Raheem Brock, one of the Owls’ all-time best players, and a defensive lineman who earned a Super Bowl ring with the Indianapolis Colts in 2007. “These guys are just playing and winning and having fun and not realizing all the history they are making or can make. They feel all the excitement but they probably don’t understand all of it.” Brock is alluding to the sorry recent history of Temple football; all of those sub .500 seasons; pleas from many alumni, fans and faculty to dump the program; being booted from the Big East for low attendance figures, and overall apathy for a program that lost eight or more games 15 times in a 27-year period from 1987 to 2008 while playing in an often empty Veterans Stadium. The Owls have had just seven winning seasons since 1978 and Brock himself never played for a winning team at Temple. Things were so bad at one time that faculty members listed the lifeless football program — which lost over a million dollars a year as well as on the field — as part of its defense for striking against university administration in 1986 and 1990. But now, the Owls are 5-0 and, so far, arguably the national college football story of the year. They are undefeated for the first time this late in a season since 1974, and garnering support for top 25 consideration around the country for the first time since the 10-2 team in 1979. Their 49-10 rout over Tulane on Homecoming, in front of a crowd of over 30,000 at Lincoln Financial Field, cements the fact that this program is for real, it’s on the rise, and plans for an on-

campus football field in the next five years can be realized. Temple-branded gear is omnipresent on campus, adorning the school’s huge student body. Temple is no longer a commuter school but a hotspot for kids looking for fun, education, a good basketball team to cheer for and, incredulously, a winning football program as well. “It’s been a lot of fun so far this year,” said quarterback P.J. Walker, a junior whose solid season (78-126, 914 yards, 7 TDs) is a major reason for the quick start. “We feel very respected and loved on campus by our fellow students. The fans have come out and supported us against Penn State and [Tulane]. I have teachers who have reached out to me to say, ‘great job,’ and ‘nice going,’ and ‘keep it up.’ To hear that it wasn’t always this way on this campus, I don’t really know about that. But I do feel it in the air, that a lot of alumni are just thrilled about us winning.” So did any of the current players see this coming? “I didn’t really think we’d be in this position as we sit right now,” said Jahad Thomas, the team’s gifted running back, who leads the team with 557 yards and seven touchdowns (plus a kickoff return and a reception for a touchdown). “No, when I was in high school, I didn’t really see all this happening when I was looking at Temple. But now that I’m here, I am not as surprised, coming off last year where we made a lot of strides and beat some good teams. I think it all starts with the head coach [Matt Rhule]. He tells us to not look ahead, to work hard, to prepare to have success, and how to handle it as it’s coming to us. The alumni have let us know there were tough times before.” After the team knocked off Penn State and Cincinnati to open the season, even though they were underdogs in both

games, Temple fans, coaches, and players started to sense something special was happening. On October 31, for the first time, the team will host renowned top-10 program Notre Dame, who is a two-point conversion away from being in the national championship conversation. Thomas, Walker, Tyler Matakevich and most of the team’s best players are asked about the possibility of playing Notre Dame as a nationally-ranked undefeated team in front of 70,000 people almost every day. But none are biting now. “It’s hard not to look ahead,” said Walker. “It really is. But we seriously are treating every game like our season that week. Charlotte was our most important game, so was [UMass and Tulane]. We hear about what people talk about but coach Rhule has prepared us to stay grounded. We know we haven’t achieved any of our goals yet. This is new to us.” Added Thomas: “P.J is right. It’s very hard to not look ahead. We play in a tough [American Athletic Conference]. It’s not a power FBS conference in most people’s eyes but we have a lot of tough games ahead. [Navy, Memphis, and Houston are also undefeated in the AAC]. Each week is a challenge. I think it says a lot of our conference that so many teams are doing well.” Thomas’ rise to stardom is one reason why the Owls have made a huge jump from last year’s 6-6 record. Recruited as a defensive back, Thomas was converted to a running back prior to the 2014 season in part due to a suggestion of Walker to Rhule. Both players played together at Elizabeth, N.J. high school. “I think P.J. went to bat for me and did suggest to coach that I could help them at running back,” he said. “But coach gave me a shot too. I needed to get bigger and stronger. I am surprised how Continued on page 2
