QUESTIONS Why am I creating this infographic? Who will benefit from this product? What’s the relevant data that I need to gather?

The Problem Making a career choice, especially as a young person, is often a very difficult task. Not fully understanding one’s own potential in combination with so many career paths and the vast amounts of data and information on those paths makes it all the more challenging. The Grade 10 Careers course is intended to assist students in this process. Your challenge is to research and collect data on a particular industry/career path and then visually communicate facts and knowledge of the industry/career in an attractive and meaningful information graphic or infographic for Careers students. Your infographic will be displayed at a Careers Exhibition and which will provide other grade 10 students with an opportunity to learn more about a particular field/industry. The Career’s teachers expect a professional design and so you

• adopt a professional color scheme appropriate to the intended message (Kuler) • show sophisticated use of typography (Dafont, check permissions) • present a rich amount of information (without intimidating the viewer) • communicate concepts using no more than 3 different typefaces • contain any combination of symbols, icons, diagrams, graphs, tables, maps, arrows lines and bullets To check the effectiveness of your design to visually communicate career data to your peers, you will need to develop a short and simple test to be deployed at the exhibition.

DEADLINE The duration of this challenge is 6 weeks. Depending on how well you manage your time, you may be required to work at lunchtime, after school and at home.

QUESTIONS Who can I speak to about my career/ industry? Where can I get secondary source information from?

INVESTIGATION The investigation can be divided into two parts.

PART A: Career Research Based on an ideal profession/ career path you have identified as part of the Career Cruising activity, you will need to gather the following secondary source data from a variety of credible sources: • Wages • Educational requirements • Career opportunities (availability, advancement potential) • Working Environment (hours, location, travel) • Entry level positions • Work tasks (what you actually do)

Use Evernote to write up each stage

[4]

PART B: DT Research This part requires you to research design technology: • Infographics as a visual communication device • Elements and principles of Graphic Design • Adobe Ilustrator CS5 tips, tricks and techniques for creating print-ready content. Part of the DT research will be guided on Moodle. Independent research beyond this will be rewarded with higher grades.

INFOGRAPHIC PROCESS

To successfully complete this stage of the process, you must submit to Moodle the following: 1. Revised Problem Statement (approx 75 words in your own words)

1. Become familiar with the ways to visualize data 2. Create good questions and go through the research process 3. Hand-sketch a draft of your final infographic (Plan) 4. Learn about Creative Commons and gather assets 5. Pick color and fonts based on message 6. Arrange infographic in the inverted pyramid style 7. Cite yor sources

2. Design Brief (refer to sample) 3. Design Specification (refer to sample) 4. A short survey to test the Infographic at the exhibition. 5. An evaluation of your learning and progress so far (approx 75 words) 6. A citation list developed with NoodleTools

PLAN Stage II

Design At this stage of the project, you will take the research you have done into both careers and design technology to develop a mockup your product. Using A4 paper and pencil, you will need to sketch a minimum of 2 different ideas for a potential design. Each of these ideas should visually communicate the information you have researched about the field/profession. You will then develop a final design.

Plan At this stage you are required to evidence your efficient use of time and resources and expected to submit a checklist of tasks you will complete in order to fulfill the creation of your infographic.

By doing this, you will develop a basic time line with your own deadlines based on the role you have in your group, as well as looking at the bigger picture through the use of a Google calendar.

Expectations for Design/Plan Design To successfully complete the DESIGN phase, you must provide in your Evernote notebook: a) 2 hand-drawn, labelled and scanned ideas for an infographic b) 1 final idea with detailed explanations of design choices c) an audio evaluation (30-60 seconds (see rubric)

Plan To successfully complete the PLANNING stage, you must create a note in your Evernote notebook that contains: a) a checklist of tasks to complete for creation of final product b) an attached iCal showing timeline of tasks c) an audio evaluation (30-60 seconds (see rubric)

CREATE Stage III

Overview Time to create your masterpiece! You will need to document the use of software used for the job in a process journal. The process journal is a working document in which you explain or justify the decisions you have made through the use of screenshots with descriptive summaries. A descriptive summary should include explanations of how you are using tools, functions and techniques within the software application. A major part of your learning is to communicate the quality of your thinking processes and understanding. Through the process of completing your process journal, you will demonstrate: • knowledge and understanding of the elements and principles of design • evidence of creativity and innovation • how you solved complicated or awkward problems • how you are reflecting on your ideas • how you had to correct your plan Refer to your task list and calendar regularly, following your planned schedule. Your process journal will be helpful when writing the product evaluation (final stage of the Design Cycle).

“successful design considers the target audience, the intended message for the audience, and the ultimate purpose of the product.”

[7]

Success Criteria To successfully complete the CREATE stage, you must provide: a) 5 or more dated entries with associated screenshots b) good explanations of software tools and techniques used c) notes regarding changes made (e.g. added a graphic, changed the color scheme, used another web resource) d) justification for any changes made to your time plan e) notes regarding personal performance, problems encountered, and use of time are included in the process journal f) an attached web-ready version of your infographic to your Evernote note. g) a printed version of your final infographic to your teacher for the exhibition
