History At the begin of the XX Century, Trieste was a buzzing cosmopolitan city frequented by artists and philosophers such as James Joyce, Italo Svevo, Sigmund Freud, Dragotin Kette, Ivan Cankar, Scipio Slataper, and Umberto Saba.
At the end of the World War I Trieste was occupated by the Italian Army, and it was officially annexed to the Kindom of Italy in 1920. History During the WW II the city suffers a Nazi occupation, and becomes the unique Italian city with a concentration camp with a crematorium. There, around 3000 people was killed, and many more were imprisioned there. After the war, between 1947 and 1954 the city was declared as an “Independent city state” under the protection of UN called “Free Territory of Trieste” and governed by the Alliated Military Government.
