Unable to look over this talented man’s gifting and the many visible things the Lord is doing in his life, much prodding, speculation and questioning circled across both sides of the pond. But now Preacher Boy Entertainment is pleased to announce the newest artist signed to Lamp Mode Recordings: S.O. Lamp Mode recordings hold a reputation of being one of the pillars in Christian hip hop, with artists that have been ministering for over 5 years, it is no surprise

M.E.X that S.O had this to say about this new chapter in his life: “Its surreal to know that I am on the same label as people who are on my iPod. I love the label, I love the people and I love their vision and their passion for the Gospel of Christ”. As the latest addition to Lamp Mode Recordings and also their first international recording artist, S.O. has begun this journey by releasing a FREE Mix-Tape entitled ‘So It Begins’. With the rave reviews received regarding his most recent project ‘The 5 Solas Mix-Tape’ released June 2010, S.O is more than ready to begin work with label mates such as Shai Linne, Json, Stephen the Levite and Timothy Brindle that share the same heart, passion and goals: proclaiming Christ and extolling Him through music, the local church and seeing it as intrinsic for Christians. Lamp Mode had this to say about the signing and S.O… “We are very excited to add S.O to the roster. Not only is he an amazing artist, he displays an evident love for the Saviour. It’s rare to see such a talent in a young man coupled with humility and reverence. Can’t wait to see what God does through him”. Although this is a new venture for S.O, his vision and goal still remains the same, which is to “Display Christ in my life and my rhyme. To make music that will not phase out, but ministry that shows how life and doctrine can meet and be effective”. S.O will be releasing his debut album early 2012 under Lamp Mode Recordings.

Today I want to talk about my heart and how it pertains to purpose. As you may be aware I am a Pastor. I arrived at this point after many years of working in the church in various capacities. Cooking, cleaning, putting out chairs, teaching Sunday school... You name it I did it. I didn’t really make a conscious decision to be a Pastor. It wasn’t something I aspired to, but as I started to discover more about my personality style, my values and how I functioned in a team setting I started to discover more about my spiritual gifting and found that I was gifted for caring for people and shepherding them and that I actually had a Pastor’s heart. Now your greatest strength can also prove to be your greatest weakness. No one starts off being the perfect ‘whatever’ they are trying to be. God always takes us through a process in which he breaks, melts and moulds us so that we can fulfil our role in the Kingdom. You see; the hard times and the hard things that we go through actually add value if we stay in God’s hands throughout the process. In the role of a Pastor it is not just a job that you do with your head or your hands; your entire being is involved, especially your heart. What do I mean? Pastoring involves seeing people not just through your own human eyes but through God’s eyes, the way He sees people. When we see them at their worst, broken and most vulnerable state it can be hard to imagine them the way that God sees them at that moment in time. The only power that can really change an individual is the power of love. This requires a Pastor offering love to each individual who comes into the church for covering and spiritual development. Offering my heart to each individual means that I had to learn to completely trust God. Trust Him to guide, direct and protect me. For each time I resorted to protecting myself this resulted in me withdrawing from others and becoming defensive and protective of myself.

Trusting God is part of the qualification for being in the Job. He actually requires us to stay open to Him and to others in this process of life. We first have to practice what we preach; especially when it comes to forgiveness and staying sensitive and open to what God is saying. If your heart is involved it is not just possible, but you will actually get hurt. Yet in the midst of this you have to pick yourself up, dust yourself down and keep on living and loving, treating those who are still with you as though nothing had happened to break your heart, whilst staying open and receiving new people as though they were the first ones to enter your church and your heart.

Whatever we have been called to requires heart involvement. God wants nothing from us if our heart is not in it. Our hearts are the soil where God places his good seed, so it is our job to ensure that our heart is good ground. Let me show you what I am talking about. Matthew 13:3-8 3. And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; 4. And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: 5. Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: 6. And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. 7. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: 8. But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. We are told about the seed that falls by the wayside, (verse 4) and they were eaten by the fowls of the air. Purpose aborted before it was birthed. Some fell on stony places, there wasn’t much earth, they sprang up, but without the depth of soil, there was no moisture and nutrition to sustain them (verse 6). Some fell among thorns and were choked. The cares of life can often overwhelm us (verse 7). In this case the soil was good but so many other things were also allowed to live in that ground. God wants to be our priority. Others fell into good ground and brought forth fruit, some a hundred fold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold (verse 8). We see four different heart conditions. The seed was good in each instance but ultimately it was the condition of the soil (the heart) that determined the outcome. We cannot allow the circumstances of life to erode the soil of our hearts for it is there for God to sow His good seed, His plans and visions for our lives. What ever our purpose, our heart has to be in it for it to mean anything to God and for it to impact on the lives of other’s. What is the condition of your heart today?

What’s up guys and gals, chica’s y chico’s…lol, man oh man! I am sooo excited about what God is doing in the music industry, for real. Okay, for starters! Congratulations goes out to Chris Tomlin. I am sooo in love with his song OUR GOD. Just in case you’re not familiar with Chris Tomlin, I KNOW that you’re familiar with his hit worship song HOW GREAT IS OUR GOD. It is THE top worship song in churches all over the world. Anyway…back to the congrats…lol. Chris Tomlin was recently named TOP CHRISTIAN ARTIST and OUR GOD was honored for TOP CHRISTIAN SONG at the 2011 Billboard Music Awards. On top of that, he walked away with the award for WORSHIP SONG OF THE YEAR at the 2011 GMA Dove Awards. Chris Tomlin is always does it big! I’m pretty excited about his recent partnership with iTunes for the premiere of his new video for I LIFT MY HANDS.

< Bishop T.D Jakes

K, let’s send up congrats to Bishop T. D. Jakes! His movie JUMPING THE BROOM is jumping leaps and bounds in the box office, to date, it has already grossed over $31,000,000! I had the privilege of seeing this film in January at a private screening, but last weekend, I decided to go to the actual theater to check it out. I wanted to support the film financially. I must say, in my opinion, this is one of the most well rounded and thought provoking films that I’ve seen in a long time. In conjunction with the new film, Bishop Jakes has released SACRED LOVE SONGS 2, which features the vocals of Micah Stampley, Crystal Aikin, Terry Thomas, Joe and many more. Bishop Jakes won’t stop with just one film though, word has it that he’s already preparing for film # 2 and a new sitcom. (Check out Mex Mag next month for more details).

While we’re talking about Bishops, let’s send up congrats to Bishop Hezekiah Walker who will be installed as the Presiding Prelate of the Pentecostal Churches of Jesus Christ this June. The service will take place at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Bridgeport, CT. I KNOW that it’s gonna be packed! Many of us are totally in love with songs like GOD FAVORED ME, I NEED YOU TO SURVIVE, and SOULED OUT. Well, you’ll get an opportunity to hear those songs live and up close during the McDonald’s Gospel Inspiration Tour, which Walker will headline this spring. He’ll be joined by my homies 21:03 in Philadelphia, Detroit and Chicago; Canton Jones in Atlanta and Jackson, MS; Myron Butler and Anthony Evans in Dallas; and Nikki Potts in Los Angeles. This is gonna be rockin’ yaw! Preashea Hilliard, this girl here…what can I say. I was able to witness her ministry first hand at SXSW in Austin, TX – which is one of the biggest tech, film, and music festivals in the world! In all honesty, I’d never heard her music before and wasn’t sure of what to expect. But let me tell you, she shut the house down, for real dough. She took the entire building into worship. Her current project LIVE OUT LOUD was released earlier this year. The single, FRESH FIRE was produced by mega producer Aaron Lindsey and the talented Israel Houghton. I really like her style of worship. Sidenote…lol…If you listen to Neechy Radio, you will often hear me say that I get excited when I hear that faith based music has made it’s way to main stream media. If you’re an American Idol fan, you already know that Kirk Franklin performed on the American Idol finale. Mandisa has been on E! News and Good Morning America amongst other shows. Trin-i-tee 5:7 recently performed of Sirius Radio. I’m telling you, we should get excited when God’s word and music reaches the masses. Alright, let’s switch gears for a second. Let’s talk about this whole economy and artist/speaker honorariums within the faith based community. I recently received an honorarium request for $20,000 this did not include travel, hotel, food, etc. – so that means it would’ve likely been about $30,000 for the whole camp, once all was said and done. There are a few angles that we can look at with this whole honorarium thing. #1 – The true reality is, many churches/ministries/ organizations simply can’t afford this type of request. Generally, they desire to bring a good show to their delegates or parishioners, but are unable to truly afford it. Don’t get me wrong, there are SOME who can afford this, but not many. #2 – Should an artist/speaker truly desire to be compensated for what he/she is worth? Yes they

should, just as anyone else would desire to be compensated properly for their skill set.

< Show me the money

Is there a happy medium in this whole thing? Absolutely. We as supporters can go out and support the music/ book/ministry. There are tons of online and retail opportunities for this. Think about how much it affects the income of your favorite artist when someone burns a copy of their cd rather than making an actual purchase. When this is done, nobody wins. Supporters can also ensure that the artist or speaker is properly taken care of when they come to your ministry. Do your best to respect the honorarium that they have set out to the best of your ability. Be up front about your available budget, no one wants to feel like you are trying to nickel and dime them….lol. The contracted artist/speaker can be more sensitive to the economic times and strains that our ministries are dealing with. Perhaps you could offer to do a seminar on the morning of your performance. It can be a win-win situation. Nuff said. If you guys wanna chop it up about this topic or anything else that you read today, hang out with me on Twitter, Facebook, or Neechy.com. Until we talk again, God bless ya and have a rockin’ day.

P

hilippa Hanna is one of the UK’s brightest talents. Her songs and stories are captivating audiences around the globe. Taking in over 100 performances each year since the launch of ‘Watching Me’ in 2007 it’s clear that Philippa is following in the footsteps of the of her bassist brother Stuart Zender (Jamiroquai, Mark Ronson) by making her mark in the music industry. Not only devoting her time to music, Philippa visited Haiti in 2009 with international children’s charity Compassion and has helped to recruit hundreds of sponsors for the charity’s work at her concerts since the launch of her 2nd album ‘Taste’. Philippa spent much of her time at the end of 2010 in Hong Kong working as a part of the development team Asia’s premier girlband Blush. The televised project, put together by producer Eliot Kennedy (Bryan Adams, Spice Girls) and Jon Niermann (former President of Walt Disney Asia-Pacific) has generated huge global interest. Having kicked off 2011 with an appearance on BBC1’s ‘Song of Praise’ a jam- packed UK Tour schedule and the brand new mini-album ‘Out Of The Blue’, this year is set to be a big year for Philippa Hanna. This year is set to be a big year for Philippa Hanna and so we decided to interview her to take a deeper look into her current and forthcoming projects. Firstly... What made you think of ‘Out Of The Blue’ as a title for this mini album? Lol. I’m laughing because of the huge awkward conversation that led to choosing the name. Basically, we’d drawn on bluegrass influences and instrumentation for the recordings. So I wanted to call it ‘The Bluegrass sessions’ but Roo said, ‘No! you’ll offend the bluegrass community because it’s not strictly bluegrass. No, no no!’ So we had to rethink and came up with ‘Out of the blue’ because it hints towards the influence. That’s the truth! What’s the reason for making ‘Out Of The Blue’ a Bluegrass project? Why not Hip Hop lol Haha. Hip hop is certainly not off the menu for the future! But I’ve always wanted to do something

M.E.X

that calls upon my country roots (my dad and most of his family perform country music). So I grew up hearing Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline etc. I’m also a big fan of bands like Nickel Creek and love singers like Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley. It just made sense. How do you think working with Eliot Kennedy helped the finished product be what you desired it to be? Eliot is a producer that makes things seem effortless. He finds the natural beauty and lets it breathe, (man, I’m starting to sound like I’m chatting on radio 2). But truthfully, He goes with his gut and doesn’t try to make everything perfect. He just identifies the magic moments and zooms in on them. His wealth of experience helps! You also worked with Roo Walker who’s an artist in his own right. What did he bring to the table on this project. Also, you mentioned (on your website) that you both speak the same language... What language is that? lol Roo walker. Have you met Roo? If you meet him you’ll probably

‘get it’ in a heartbeat. He brings a bit of chaos and imagination. But also just pure talent. He’s a fantastic guitarist but has a great deal of passion and vision for music projects. Oh yeah, and we both speak moonglish :-) What was the experience of doing a live studio recording like? All the musicians in one room together etc It felt amazing! Like the way it really should be. There’s a chemistry and a rush of adrenaline. The moment the band strikes that first chord it’s like ‘this is it - let go and perform, but concentrate and get it right!’ It’s a really time effective process too. How did it differ to your normal recording process and which do you prefer?

instrumentation with musicians using a mandolin, banjo, up-right bass and even an accordion. What was it like creating music with such organic instruments? Beautiful. And these players live and breath music. I’ve always loved mandolin and banjo. My dad used to play banjo when i was little - such an unmistakable sound! At the beginning of our bluegrass version of ‘Higher’ you just can’t help but grin and shout ‘yeeehah!’. Try it, you’ll see what I mean. There’s also something so soulful and those sounds on the more chilled out tracks. What’s your favourite song off ‘Out Of The Blue’? It seems that Raggedy doll, (about a toy-makers love for his creation) is a favourite with audiences. But I love ‘Happy in My skin’. Just because it’s cheeky sounding. It sounds like it’s winking ;-)

This has been by far my favourite experience of recording. Because you don’t have time to get snowblind. You just get it down and then listen later and think, ‘yeah we nailed it!’ And there’s nothing like having a room full of people sharing the excitement.

A few of our readers wanted to know more about 2 of your songs.... ‘Raggedy Doll’ and ‘Summer Bride’... What’s the message behind these songs and what effect do you hope it will have on the listener?

You went really authentic on the

firstly by that unconditional love a child has for their oldest toys. It doesn’t seem to matter that their falling apart or that the paints chipping off and its hair falling out. It made me think about God, (the creator) and how He must feel about us. ‘Summer Bride’ is a story about a girl who has a broken engagement. She doesn’t want to let anyone near her because she’s been so hurt. But then she hears someone talking about Jesus and how He’ll never leave her or forsake her. It makes her realise there’s someone who’ll never change His mind about how He feels for her.

there are a bunch of songs waiting for the next album which are COMPLETELY different again! Very excited to start recording. Where are you going to be in the next few months that people can come and hear you? I’m going to be playing in Long Eaton, France, Wakefield, Stoke-On-Trent, Guisborough, Birmingham, Doncaster, Nottingham and more. For dates and more detailed information check out the events page on my website.

Were there any other songs that you wrote Much love! that didn’t make the final cut? Xx When we chose the songs, we wanted to do some fresh stuff, but we chose them based on their compatibility to the style. We knew tracks like ‘Summer Bride’ and ‘Mr Right’ would work really well. So indeed

029 In the winter of 2004, some of my closest friends, now turned business partners and I were in the city of Chicago, IL making plans to start an entertainment company. I remember the air of excitement and optimism in the room. Selecting a company name, logo, office location and acquiring funds to run the company were some of our immediate concerns. We dove right in, attending a series of conferences and concerts in our field, networking with the intent of making a name for ourselves in our new business community. 6 months later, excitement turned to disappointment through a series of failed relationships, broken promises, and stolen business plans, a phenomenon that had become all too common. It was then that we realized we had neglected one minor detail in our planning that has now become the basis of how we operate and expect to be treated in business. That Detail is Integrity. Growing up, my mother told me integrity is what you do when no one is looking. Webster’s defines it as “Moral soundness honesty freedom from corrupting influence or motive.” These kinds of practices seem almost unheard of when dealing in the often cutthroat competitive world of entertainment. Even outside of the realm of entertainment, it’s important for us all to live by a moral code within the work place and in our everyday day lives. A good name and reputation with the buying public is priceless, especially in our current economic times. You simply can’t afford to compromise your integrity. Personal integrity is a must. It reveals who you are and what you are about, helping you to be clear on what you will and won’t do in any given situation. It’s not something you live by out of convenience or practice only at the risk of being caught. You either have it, or you don’t...it’s that simple. The road to personal integrity is one less travelled, but paved

in gold like opportunities and emotional freedoms beyond compare. Making personal integrity a core value in your belief system truly does position you and your brand for maximum success. Below are 5 tips I live by in both my business and personal life that can I believe can serve as excellent markers in maintaining your personal integrity. Keep your word Always keep your word. If you make a promise, deliver that promise, and if you can’t, communicate it. Nothing destroys a relationship (business or otherwise) like lack of trust. Be Selective Choose your most trusted associates very carefully. Reputations aren’t just built on how you conduct yourself. They are equally built according to the company you keep. Be likeable You don’t have to be buddies or best friends with the people you do business with, but you should be respected for the person you are. Be Genuine In a world where being fake is the norm, try standing out by being REAL! Stand for what you believe and don’t be shaped by others opinions. Be Mindful Remember that your name and relationships are all you have. Act accordingly!

M.E.X MAGAZINE | ISSUE 4

What can I say...? ‘Thank you so much’ feels inadequate, but does sum it up rather nicely. Your response to my ‘How To’ blogs has been awesome, and that only encourages me to write more. If you’re reading this on the awesome M.E.X Magazine, you can still get the earlier ‘How To’ instalments by checking out the links at the end of this piece. So let’s kick off with the next in the series of the most shared blogs I’ve written in recent times. Top 5 Things To Make The Media Work For You (Part 2) Tip 1: Don’t Make Your Media Contact Out to be a Liar: *NEVER* Send ‘Maybe Material’... OK, so it’s a slightly melodramatic way of putting it, but if you’re unsure about your release date, for goodness sake don’t send your material to the media. Most media platforms have a pretty robust publication schedule. Their audience depend on them to deliver on promises they make based on that schedule. Think about your own personal experience: you tune in to (or set your recorder for) your favourite radio/TV show at a specified time, or pick up your favourite publication from a store

around a set date. How disappointed are you when your favourite thing doesn’t show up? By extension If you’re sending out your promotional material while you’re still finalising your iTunes upload dates, booking the venue, waiting to hear from the CD pressing plant, then you’d better be sure they’re gonna come through for you. I get get bored (and slightly frustrated) with ‘coming soon’, especially if the thing I’m waiting for sounds exciting. Here’s a quick tip: follow your ‘coming soon’ with a specific date: ‘Coming Soon: Saturday, August 1, 2011’ is much better. And sure, that’s still 3 long months away, but at least now I know. An example: I currently have at least 3 really strong songs sitting on a folder on my desktop that I can’t play on radio or publish on any of the UKGospel.com platforms because the information the artists have sent me say the music is ‘coming soon’, ‘about to be released’, or some other similar vague pronouncement.

rock solid that they can turn round and tell the world about. And make sure you deliver on it. That’ll make them work for you... P.S. I know August 1st is a Monday. That was just an example :-) Tip 2: ‘Copy/Paste’ is your friend While I’ve been typing this, someone popped up on Face book chat and asked me for my contact details. No problem with that. But the thing is, I sent all the relevant details via the same medium 3 days ago when they asked me the first time. How hard can it be to copy and paste a conversation and store it somewhere safe for yourself? Tip 3: K.I.S.S. Your Media Contact In other words, ‘Keep It Simple, Simon’ (or Simone).

Sending your material to your media contacts should be the very last thing you do, after you have sorted out *absolutely everything else* to make sure to can actually deliver on your promise...

In his feature ‘Top 5 Tips for Writing a Decent Bio’ [Matt/Adam pls link to http://wp.me/pn2Z5-8O], George Luke spoke about the tendency for you to want to do your readers’ thinking for them in your bio (the number of times I’ve seen things like ‘this song is going to bless you’ almost makes me want to cry). Or perhaps your want to share details your entire life history with your media contact.

Give your media contact something

My advice..? Don’t.

Keep it simple. This is very personal preference, but in terms of your content, I only want the salient headline information in the first instance. I think this has been said before, but try and fit everything on one side of an A4 page, if possible. Tell me a story. Pretty much all media is based around some sort of storytelling, so make the information you’re sharing is ‘retellable’. Chances are you’ll need a media professional to write that for you. It takes a certain kind of skill, and for the kind of returns you’ll potentially receive, it’s a good investment. If you don’t know what I’m on about, see the first of the series. Again, links at the end of this piece. Technical tips If you’re sending your information as a fancy/designed PDF document, make sure you send a Word version with the same information. Not everyone has access to a PDF reader, but almost everyone in media will have access to Microsoft Word. If I read something I like, I’d love to be able to copy it and use it in the feature I’m writing about you. Another pet peeve of mine: never, ever, ever just send a flyer to your media contact. If I like the information on your flyer I may still NOT use it because of the work involved in manually transcribing the text/information from the image. That may sound like I’m being lazy, but when I only have 5 minutes to spare and want to update my blog or site, I go for emails or press releases that I can just copy/paste from. Happens pretty much every time.

Tip 4: Personalise your pitches *Never* send out emails your media contact list with things like ‘Dear media professional’ or some other annoying generic name. Take some time and personalise that message. Much of working with the media is about developing relationships. Again this is another personal gripe, but I don’t imagine that many people enjoy being ‘anonymised’. Try and connect with your media contact on a personal level, and chances are they’ll work better for you. Tip 5: Don’t Spam! Sounds obvious, right..? I understand social media gives us all more access where it wasn’t previously possible, but social (and civil) rules still apply. If the first time I ever hear from you is when you spam my Twitter account with “Hey @UKGospel download this AWESOME tune by 123Artist!! RT! RT! RT!” or your posting of some item on my Face book wall - I’ll almost certainly go out of my way to ignore you and delete your post. And I’ll remember you - for all the wrong reasons. Having said that, if your message catches me in a (rare) quiet moment I might follow the link and explore your music. That only happens in about 1 out of 60 times with me. Literally.

And Finally, the Usual ‘Bonus Tip’: Prepare a Decent Answer to the Unspoken Question: ‘So What...?’ Everyone says the same things in pretty much the same way in their releases: find a way of telling your own story that’s interesting and intriguing, without being too clever. Your mum, your church and your mates might have told you your project is the best thing since sliced bread, but please let me make up my own mind. Thank you. Also: please give me something to work with beyond dry factual information: if you created that killer hook on your big tune completely by mistake while trying to stop your coffee from spilling on to your piano keyboard, find an interesting way to incorporate that in your release. Perhaps that amazing vocal vamp came about because you tripped in church during rehearsal..? Quirky or interesting stories like that always work well in the media, and give your product a longer shelf life: they become talking points for whoever’s reporting them, and at the very least - they stick in the mind. OK, that’s your lot. Hope this helps. See you in the next M.E.X.

A better general rule of thumb will be to think about how you’d go about doing things in the real world: chances are you don’t just go up to people and start pestering them about your product without some kind of civil dialogue...

Royal Tailor Black & White Royal Tailor are a creative, high-energy band that are passionate about using their music-based ministry to reach a generation of students suffering from the symptoms of a visionless life. ‘Black & White’ is the band’s debut offering. This is one of the most up-to-date, current sounding albums we’ve heard in a while. Royal Tailor have somehow managed to create a distinct Pop sounding album with rock and funk undertones. This has to be one of the most radio friendly albums in a while featuring music that will easily rival the music coming out in the charts. The album features production from one of

our favourite producers... Aaron Lindsey. As well as production from Daniel Kinner and Chuck Butler. It’s hard to pick stand out tacks but the poprock fusion on ‘Freefall’ is definitely one to check out. A great chorus and powerful driving guitars accompanied by some nice harmonies have definitely made this a new favourite song of ours. Other stand out tracks are the simple, yet complex, dynamic and cheerful ‘Hold Me Together’ or the electro-pop ‘Wannabe’ that will definitely be a favourite to any electro/ dance music lovers and the title track ‘Black & White’ which gives us a funky flavoured song for those times when you need a pick me up or just want some great music with

good vibes. Royal Tailor are a new band to us but ‘Black & White’ has secured them a special place in our iTunes collection. If you’re searching for great Christian Pop... Look no further... It’s safe to say that Christian music has found a band like no other. Royal Tailor are making cutting edge, funky and cool music and we’re sure the best is yet to come. M.E.X Rating

035 Martha Munizzi Make it Loud Martha Munizzi, the best selling independent Gospel artist in the history of Gospel music has returned again with another strong album ‘Make It Loud’ which is also her first self-produced album. The new albums features William McDowell, Michael Gungor, Jonathan Stockstill, Lori Morrison, Daniel Eric Groves and the debut of Danielle Munizzi, Martha’s daughter. ‘Make It Loud’ shows another side to Martha and her music. This album takes Martha somewhere new, exploring different sounds and approaches to her songs which was refreshing. It’s a live album so though-out the album there’s great crowd participation and a great atmosphere. The fact that it’s live also leaves room for a lot of opportunities for the band to express themselves and they sure did that. The musical and vocal arrangements are tight and will keep you listening from start to end. ‘Excellent’ has to be our favourite song on the album. The musicianship and the whole vibe is bound to get you singing along and dancing... There’s enough energy in this song to last a few days. The reprise also allows for some great musicianship from the band... A section musicians everywhere will love. ‘No One Higher’ is a song that will definitely transcend cultures and find it’s way into worship services around the world with it’s congregational sound and beautiful contemplative music and meaningful lyrics. ‘Set Me Free’ brings the acoustic, organic sound giving the song a pure and intimate feel. The emotive, and harmonious singing and descriptive lyrics make this a great song for times of devotion and seeking God. ‘Make It Loud’ is a great album and shows development with Martha’s songwriting skills and even the ability to keep her sound whilst still adding something new into the mix. Anyone that loves great praise and worship music with deep, meaningful songs will love this album. It really represents a lot of the different sounds you could hear in a modern church worship service, so diverse but cohesive, a sound that will appeal to the masses.

Joseph Perry My Creator Joseph Perry is an emerging worship leader from the UK bursting onto the UK worship scene with his 5 track debut EP ‘My Creator’ at the end of 2010. The EP is full of great songs for praise and worship. Joseph’s writing skills show a maturity far beyond his age at only 20 years old. The whole EP is very contemporary leaning more towards ‘CCM’ but with a lot of ‘Gospel’ styled musical and vocal parts form time to time which stand out more on ‘Day That I Die’. An awesome song speaking of how we need to die to self and come alive to Christ... It’s a purposeful song reminding us that ‘I was made to live for more than this... more than what I see’ and also ‘You Will Endure’ which has a classic 6/8 swing and sweet melodies and some awesome guitar lines... The song comes alive towards the end though with the creshendo of the song with the backing vocals taking on a very choral characteristics ‘Amazing Grace’... the EP opener is a powerful up tempo song and gets full marks for impact and sing-a-bility. This is definitely one of those songs that will catch you out when you’re walking down the street finding yourself singing ‘Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh... Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh’ at the top of your lungs. The title track ‘My Creator’ is a soft ballad and is a song of reassurance. This song is definitely one for times of soaking (in the presence of God) and being uplifted by the word of God. The use of various scriptures in the lyrics really make it that more powerful. The EP ends on ‘Teach Us To Love’ featuring the soulful vocals of J.C. Henry on a song from the heart encouraging us all to love like Jesus does, backed by soulful, smooth music. This is a great EP and certainly leaves you wanting more. If you’re into praise and worship music and want to hear some fresh and also refreshing with quality lyrical content; this is for you. M.E.X Rating

Jesus the Headliner

Matthew 17 1-9 This short DVD lasted around 15 minutes. But in those few short minutes I was confronted and challenged to my very core. What or who do you follow? Kind of brings you up short, fore as you pause to take a breath you find yourself asking yourself the question again. Sometimes we lose our way and we didn’t even know. Sometimes its good to be challenged, confronted and made to think about our current position. I was completely captivated by the narrative, it caused me to reflect on what I really understood about following Christ. I feel this has great application not just in my life but in the life of the church. I can see heated discussions taking place all up and down these British Isles behind many a church door as Christians are given the opportunity to re-examine their motivation and the root of their passion. Who are we following and why! I can’t wait to see the other six. Yvonne Brooks

arry Southgate is a young man doing great things on the other side of the world. A singer, songwriter, actor and model it’s hard to see how he finds times for it all. It’s hard enough for a young man to stay focused at the best of times... We wanted to know how he manages it all and find out more about the Hillsong and New Breed (Israel Houghton) singer. Barry is doing very well for himself in Australia at the moment but is still a new name to many outside of that country and wanted to introduce himself to you in his own unique way. “Hey everyone, my name’s Barry Southgate and I’m a singer/songwriter. I was born in South Africa, spent my teens in New Zealand and began my adult life in Australia. Makes Tri-Nations rugby a bit tricky (haha...). I grew up in quite a musical family and because I’m also quite mixed (African, English, German and Indonesian), there was always lots of different music playing in the house. That was cool, because it helped give me a real eclectic taste musically. You’ll hear a bunch of influences in my own music because of that. How I got to where I am today? Honestly... Keeping the faith, working hard and never giving up through the setbacks. None of it would have been possible without God’s grace.” After growing up in a very musical family you could say that Barry didn’t have a choice in whether he was going to be a music lover or not. Growing up in that kind of environment with so many different different musical influences is enough to give anyone a taste for music and that’s just what it did for the young boy. “I always sang in school plays, choirs and whatnot as a kid. First memorable experience of music was probably hearing my dad sing and play his guitar around the house. He did back then and when I go visit my parents today he still does (haha...).” Barry went on to talk about his journey to where he is now. “There wasn’t any defining moment where lightning struck or anything like that (haha...). I just always knew I loved to sing

and as a Christian, using my gift to help lead people in worship was a natural thing. It’s an honor.”

another opportunity that if it had been offered to us, would have been taken no questions asked.

Like everyone else in the world Barry has faced his own challenges... It’s still hard to understand why people who are so gifted struggle with believing in themselves which is strange because we often experience that same feeling ourselves.

“At the same time, I was also offered a role on the hit FOX TV series, ‘Power Rangers’, for the States, having had featured in an episode before,” shared Barry while taking a trip down memory lane to the period of his life where he not only turned down a record contract but also the chance to be a Power Ranger. “Man, that was tough to turn down too, because anyone who really knows me knows I’m a huge superhero fanatic (haha...).”

“Definitely self-doubt,” said Barry when asked about his personal struggles and challenges with the music industry. “There’s a lot of rejection in the entertainment industry. Fighting to keep your head up through people saying, “You can’t do this, you won’t make it...”, isn’t easy. Being stable enough to not compromise who you are in order to get ahead, that’s a real challenge right there. It doesn’t matter how spiritual you are, until you’re actually in that situation, you never know how you’ll react.” Before Barry became the multitasking worship leader he’s become today he was in a singing/break dancing group based in New Zealand called Jireh. “Wow...” Barry exclaims as he reminisces about his time spent with Jireh. “The Jireh years were honestly some of the best years of my life. We were a singing/dancing/break-dancing ministry group, travelling around performing at schools, churches and community events. Though we broke up years ago now, we all still keep in touch. No matter what, we’re pretty much family for life.” After doing some research we found out that Barry was offered a record contract while still with Jireh but turned it down. “It was just before Jireh decided to move to Australia from NZ as that next step. When I commit to something, I jump in all the way, so it was just a case of that. Found it pretty tough, but I felt like I needed to commit and move with the group, rather than sign the deal. Looking back now though, the crazy thing is that one single move played a pretty large part in where I am now. It shows me that moving over here was for a much bigger purpose and who knows where I’d been if I hadn’t..?” That’s one of those questions that has no answer other than the word speculation. But we know that God has a plan for our lives and if we’re in a relationship He will direct our path even if we’re not always sure where that path will take us. Barry

You may not know but as well as Barry’s work with Hillsong, Darlene Zschech and New Breed, he’s an artist in his own right and is making a name for himself in the mainstream music industry in Australia. “It’s such an awesome privilege and a whole lot of fun, because we’re all family. It’s great!” says Barry when talking about his experiences of working with Hillsong and Darlene Zschech. “I met Israel Houghton when he came out to Sydney for Hillsong Conference one year and he actually asked me. Most of New Breed is based out in the States, but geographically, we’re actually all pretty spread out.” Barry went on to talk about how he got into the music industry. “I actually started out in the secular music industry first,” says Barry. “Opportunities weren’t as big as they are now, but that’s where I got my start. Even when I was in Jireh, I was still doing spot shows here and there in the mainstream. I’ve never been a fan of that word ‘secular’, because to me it’s quite a dividing term, you know? I just see music as music, regardless of content, and have never really compartmentalized what I do.” Contrary to popular belief it is possible to work in the mainstream music industry without compromising your faith... Barry is an example of that. Barry is rising as a national icon in Australia and it’s so powerful that he can allow the world to see a Jesus focused life and show that living for God is actually a great thing and break down stereotypes and preconceived ideas about our faith and our God. Barry was even able to take part in Australian Idol and was quite successful reaching the top 24 which is a pretty big deal. “Man... That almost seems like another lifetime now! It was a priceless experience I don’t think I’ll ever forget. Talk about being thrown in the deep end (haha...). It’s where I first learned

to work in front of TV cameras, talk to the media and experience fame... All of that. It’s like going from level 0 to 10 in no time, because you just have to! It’s definitely not for everyone, but I’m glad I did it. I got my start a bit later, so doing Idol forced me out of my comfort zone big-time.” Barry went on to share how the whole experience changed his musical career... “It set me up (work-wise) for the next 1.5 years easily, which was great. And to this day I still get stopped on the street sometimes, asking if I did Idol. It’s hilarious to me, because it’s been a gazillion years and it’s not like I was even in the top 10 (haha...).” We’re not sure how or why but Barry has clearly made a lasting impression on Australia that has out-lasted the post-show fame (where you’re famous for a few months; maybe a year if you’re lucky) that most reality TV contestants experience after the show. Barry is also a model which is not something you hear everyday. Having been involved in many successful campaigns in Australia and internationally we can see that modelling is a lot more than a hobby or just taking pictures on a camera phone and putting them on face book... “I enjoy it,” says Barry. “You get to do a lot of things on the job that you wouldn’t normally do otherwise. But like any job, it’s still work. The toughest part would be that there’s a ton of temptation. So much is easily accessible in this industry. For me, I focus on doing the job, but keep away from certain situations outside of that, that I know aren’t going to help me. Does that make sense? At the end of the day though, as long as you know and remember who you are, you’re gonna be fine.” The main point here is that when temptations comes... Resist. James 4 V 7 says... “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” We all have the ability to resist. The problem isn’t temptation but rather what we do with the temptation. If we entertain it then we’re in trouble. If we resist, the devil has no choice but to pack his bags and leave. Like most artist’s, they’re never really satisfied until they’ve released their own music. Barry has been hard at work in the music industry writing for Sasha-Lee (winner of South African Idol) and also the German girl-band Monrose as well as various Hillsong albums to name a few as well as singing for some of the biggest

live musicians all over it. It’s a small, organic, honest taste of me. No gimmicks,” explains Barry.

Most people have heard of Hillsong, Parachute Band, Planet Shakers and Brooke Fraser etc but as we’re just music lovers we wanted to know “Which song represents ‘Epitome’ if there’s any artist’s or bands we “The reason I called it “Epitome” best? Equippers Church in Auckland are doing a live record later this year and the “Hallelujah Project” is basically them just releasing raw versions of the tunes on YouTube leading up to it. Gives people a chance to get familiar with the songs beforehand.” We’re nearly half way through the year now and time is going fast but we wanted to know what Barry has in store for us for the remaining months. “So much, but the thing I’m most excited about for this year is definitely releasing music. Finally..! The fans and supporters have been real patient and encouraging, I just can’t wait to get it out for them.” He then went on to speak about what is to come in the next 5 years. “Making records for myself, as well as for other artists, definitely. Acting again, I’d love to do movies... Traveling a bit still... Growing more as a businessman and learning how to use my platform/resources to create great initiatives that benefit other people. The BCS Movement would definitely fall in that lane... Hopefully, I’ll also be married (haha...). But seriously speaking, just more increase of what I’m already living right now.” The BCS Movement is more than the initials for Barry Conrad Southgate and represents something so much deeper. “My hope is that it inspires you in some way to make a positive difference & help someone wherever you are – whatever your circumstance, no matter what your idea of “change” looks like. It could be a smile, a word of encouragement, financial help during a tough time, a gift… Whatever you feel to do.” On a lighter note; we’re sure the Singer, songwriter, model and actor will have no problem finding a wife when the time is right... Ladies can we get an Amen lol Barry Southgate is a very talented young man and God has positioned him in many areas of the entertainment industry and it would be a shame for this interview to end without giving Barry the chance to pass on some wise words of wisdom to those who are interested in careers in mainstream music, acting or modelling etc. “On a practical level, I’d say take a good look at your skill set first. It’s easy to look at what someone else has or is doing & maybe think that’s what we should be doing, even though it’s totally outside of our own gifting. Everyone’s unique and we’ve all got different strengths for a reason. A lot of times, that gift in your hand is really easy to overlook, because it seems ‘too easy’, or ‘just what I do’. Pay attention to that.” “If you feel it’s something that is a given, then I’d definitely pray about it. Are you being called to the mainstream entertainment industry, or are you being called to outwork your gifts in more of a ministry role within the church? The reason it’s important to ask those questions is because, yes, we’re called to be salt & light in the world, but at the same time we’re all graced for different paths & not everyone is called to the (mainstream) entertainment industry.” Bring Change Somewhere

Walking through this life with God, hand in hand with his Holy Spirit can sometimes feel like we’re floating about. We drift through life, safe knowing he’s all around us and life can often feel pretty limitless; secure in His bubble. So we’ve established it’s good to reach outside of the bubble, and also to remain within it, but what happens when you realise that you no longer can see it? That security which was once so beautiful, leaving you completely trusting in Him, seems to have disappeared and although you know its still all around you, you no longer feel it.

less of how they feel. 2 Corinthians 5 tells us to “capture rebellious thoughts and make them obedient to Christ”. This means when situations look bleak and the devils whispering these temptations in our ears, God’s already warned us to take these thoughts as prisoner.

Imagine capturing a thief in your home, if you were brave enough, you wouldn’t say, “hey, hang around for a bit, let’s talk, and maybe you can leave a bit later”, nor would you ask him politely to exit your house. You’d bring out the baseball bat and make sure he left with nothing!!! et me start by saying first, that before you begin trying to identify whether you are in a happy relationship or not, you need to identify what your definition of “happy” is for you! Everyone has different needs in relationships. The fulfillment of those specific needs is usually what determines whether or not you are happy. I encourage you to really think about what makes you happy, and start from there. The 10 Rules outlined in this article are not only applicable to loving relationships, but also friendships, business relationships, and even relationships with your family members. The rules listed below are specifically formulated for building loving, happy relationships with a significant other, but can also provide insight to how to manage all of the other types of relationships you maintain in your life. So, let’s dive in!

Rule #1: Give Yourself Permission To Be Happy. Often times we allow mistakes from our past to determine our worthiness of real happiness. This is one of the reasons that we subconsciously sabotage healthy relationships with true potential. For the sake of you and your partner, you need to feel deserving of happiness. It’s simply not fair to enter into a relationship that you don’t feel that you deserve. You will hurt your partner, and cause more damage to yourself. Start identifying what makes you worthy of love and happiness, and begin building your relationship around what you value about yourself. When you find value in yourself, it is easy to find and celebrate the value in those you love. Rule #2: Recognize Your Self Worth. When you recognize your self worth, you will know how to identify what relationships are valuable to your purpose and mission in life. Recognizing your self worth will also teach you to identify destructive relationships that you may inadvertently allow to determine your worth. Don’t allow destructive people to determine your value. Identify your own self worth so that you can recognize when others do not. Rule #3: Identify The Goal Of Your Relationship. Not every relationship you enter has the same expectations. Believe it or not, your partner may have totally different reasons for being in a relationship than you do. Therefore, the goals and expectations that you both have may be different altogether. Identify your expectations and what you would like to see come from your relationship. Whether it’s marriage, or a life-long friendship, you need to know what you expect. Then, find out from your partner what their expectations are in the relationship. If it is a good match then begin setting and working on your goals together, periodically checking in on each others’ needs towards meeting the goal of your relationship with each other. This will help you set healthy milestones for reaching your relationship goals, and keep you in constant communication of fulfilling them together. Rule #4: Identify and Confront Your Insecurities. A lot of times we sabotage our relationships because there are underlying insecurities that we don’t want to recognize, or confront. You simply cannot build a happy relationship until you recognize what your insecurities are. You will always find a flaw in your partner. Nobody is perfect, including you. Your insecurities play a huge part in the development of your relationships. All of them. Begin to develop a healthy relationship with yourself by evaluating your strengths and weaknesses. Be honest with yourself and your partner by discussing your

About the Writer...

insecurities. A good mate will help you get the healing you need, and will build a secure structure for you to cultivate a happy relationship. Rule #5: Learn How To Communicate Effectively. The ability to speak is not communication. Communication is the ability to articulate your point of view in a way that the other person can understand your true sentiments. This takes work. Everybody hears differently, and as a communicator, it is important that your goal is for the other person to understand, what you mean, not just hear what you say. We all speak different languages. Learning to speak the language of your partner is one of the most important investments you can make in the future of your relationship. Rule #6: Celebrate Each Other’s Accomplishments. Before there were two, there was one. You both have individual goals and plans for your future. As you both achieve your personal goals, celebrate them. Your significant other needs to know that you are proud of them. Whether it’s a personal or career success, make every milestone an opportunity to celebrate each other as an individual for working hard and staying focused on their goal. Celebrating your partner’s accomplishments also sends a subliminal message about how their work on your relationship will be valued and celebrated. ;-) Rule #7: “Space” Is A Good Place. Respect each other’s need for space. Alone is not a dirty word. We all need time alone where we can process all of the 3,000 plus thoughts, feelings, and emotions that we encounter every day. When your partner asks for space, don’t automatically think the negative. Space is the place for your partner to rest their mind. When a mind is overwhelmed it doesn’t always react appropriately to situations. Space is that time and place where the mind figures things out in reality, versus the imagination. Yes, I know it sounds backwards, but it really does make sense. Chaos is the breeding ground for stressful reactions. The imagination runs first, by what is causing stress. When the mind can get clear and free from stress, it limits the imagination from wandering into a negative space. Our imagination is often times the birthplace of many lies that we tell ourselves that cause destruction. Space is the place to help control the thoughts that feed the imagination. Embrace “space” and your partners need for it. It is healthy to need space and to receive it without condemnation. (Plus, it will give them an opportunity to miss you… ;) Rule #8: Learn The Art of Compromise. Compromise (negotiation) is an art form.

In order for healthy compromise to exist, you need to know what compromise really is. Compromise is not the admission of failure, or the acceptance of loss. Compromise is the identification of “too much self ” and the slow, but painful act of chiseling the block of pride off of your chest. When you enter a relationship having a list of things that just have to be “your way or no way at all,” you have no business being in a relationship at all. Relationships are not one-sided. Relationship is agreement. How “can two come together less, they agree?” (Amos 3:3) In order to have agreement, there has to be two sides from which the two come together to form one. To watch two people chisel away at their selfish needs in order to please the other is the purest form of love. Self sacrifice. Recognize what you are and are not willing to compromise, and why. Then be willing to learn to dance to the beautiful song of togetherness through the art of compromise. Rule #9 Be Grateful For Your Partner. Think about all of the positive things that your partner brings into your life and be grateful for them. Make sure that you express your gratefulness as often as you can. Being grateful helps you to recognize the true value of your partner, and your relationship. Expressing gratefulness to your partner helps him/her to feel secure in the relationship, and gives them a clue on what you value about them. Everyone wants to be needed and appreciated. When your partner knows what you appreciate about them, it encourages them to give you more of that very thing, and to look for more ways to be appreciated by you. Gratefulness is a seed. When you sow it by expressing it, it grows into more things to be grateful for. Rule #10 Divorce The Past. Stop bringing up old stuff. Whether it’s a failed relationship with another partner, or the partner you are with, you have to move on before you can move forward. If you say that you have forgiven the past, don’t keep relying on it to make you feel comfortable about the fear that you have. What does that mean? Check it out. A person who brings up the past often is dealing with fear. Bringing up the past helps to validate present fear (what’s currently in their life). Fear is a security blanket that people hold on to, to use as an excuse if things don’t work out as planned. As long as you haven’t let go of the past, you will always have fear in your relationship. If you have fear in your relationship, you will never be secure, and you will never make your partner feel secure. Fear and trust cannot reside wholeheartedly in the same relationship. You must divorce the past in order to build a happy relationship, with a promising future.

‘with faith and understanding you will journey from boy to man’ Phil Collins – Tarzan (Son of Man) (“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God” Matthew 5:9) The other day I had a chat with a hit man. No really. He told me all about his childhood. Can you remember being six years old? Well, that was the age at which Joey Daniels stabbed someone for the first time. With a bread knife. Things only got worse as he grew up to be a man. Joey had been knee-capped, stabbed ten times, shot in the head, and all that was just a fraction of the pain that he’d dished out to others. With payments from £10 to £300,000 per job, he had what he thought was a great James Bond lifestyle. He told me that his dad had taught him how to be a ‘real man’: from day one “my dad would punch me in the face if I ever cried, because he said real men show no emotion”. Joey told me how his life of being a “real man, like you see in the movies” had left him totally broken. It was only after a failed attempt at suicide that he cried out for God to intervene in his life and change him: “Let’s just say it wasn’t easy, but it happened...I met people that not only cared but helped me care.” Joey gave his first hug as a father only a short while ago, “I realised at that moment when I hugged my daughter what being a man was really about.” Joey Daniels now heads up Warriors in Christ: a ministry that helps young men discover what it means to become real men. So what does a real man look like? What does a son of Adam, son of Christ, son of the kingdom do, say and feel? The Bible does not actually give us a bullet-pointed ‘this is a man of the kingdom’ list. Almost all the ‘character’

lists apply to both men and women e.g. the fruits of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22, godly qualities in 2 Peter 1:5-8. Of course, our true blueprint of manhood is Jesus himself, perfect fusion of strength and compassion, but again he is a blueprint for all humankind, not just men. To take a detour out of the Bible and into my own personal experiences, there are two films that inspire me as a man: King Leonidas from 300 and Maximus from Gladiator are both examples of real men who are willing to stand and fight, but also know the importance of respect, empathy and gentleness. Before the famous ‘This is Sparta!’ we all know so well, King Leonidas glances at his wife and does not act until she gives the go ahead. Those few seconds speak volumes, and for me they bring to mind Ephesians 5:21-32 – complete mutual respect and love between man and woman. Maximus displays the same attitude towards his family in Gladiator. If you’re not married, then the attitude extends just as well to relationships between men and anyone else – respect and compassion, not macho dominance and arrogance that men can so often be guilty of. Compassion is not the same as being a pushover, passive or weak. Men don’t have to dilute their masculinity or lay down their weapons to be men of God – but instead of fighting with

guns and knives, they take up a new battle: “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armour of God” (belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, feet ready with the gospel of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, sword of the Spirit) - Ephesians 6:1017. The world needs men who are ready and willing to fight for justice, truth and for the kingdom of God to break through in people’s lives. Four in 5 criminal offenders in the UK today are men. Time for an army of men who will lead the way, following Jesus’ blueprint, to a new level of manhood – full of strength, respect and compassion.

C

oco Dupree is one of our favourite vocalists from the UK. On the back of her EP release ‘Fall & Rise’ and also our ‘In The Shoot’ photo shoot feature that we did in M.E.X Issue 2 – we decided to catch up with her for our ‘My First’ interview so we and you can get to know her better.

First song remembered – WOW my first song... Boy this is taking me back OK I remember singing ‘wind the bobbin up wind the bobbin up pull pull clap clap clap’ lol If you recognise that, you’ll know I’m talking about my favourite theme song for the cartoon ‘Three Musketeers’ ‘All for one and one for all’ First day at school – My first day at school. Oh gosh, I think my mum was with me and I remember lining up outside and meeting my teacher. I was very shy and wouldn’t say anything... My mum walked me to class to get me settled and from then on everything is a blurr... lol First CD – My first CD Hmmmm... Not too sure about the first CD as there was a lot of music being played in my home, but I remember my first cassette tape was The Winans. I absolutely loved them and said that I wanna write like them when I get older. That tape got ‘rinsed’ (played a lot) and I always took it with me everywhere I went. Good times good stuff! First concert attended – Yeeaah... My first concert was the Spice Girls at Wembley Stadium. I know, I know... I’m a child of the 90’s... lol As a young girl growing up I saw them as fun and colourful but it was a fun day as I spent it with with my best friend. I actually remember being called Mel B for having big curly hair. Those days were jokes First song written - The first song I wrote was when I was 14 or 15. Me and my cousin were attached at the hip; we were always together and as

we have a musical family we decided to work together so he produced my first few songs. I actually wrote 2 songs but cant remember which one came first, one was called ‘Believe’ which was a Gospel song and the other was called ‘Wasn’t Mine’ which wasn’t a Gospel song. First performance – My first performance was at my church when I was 14 and we had a concert. I had to dance to a song that my uncle’s had written and it wasn’t my type of dancing but I really enjoyed it as it boosted my confidence to become the street dancer and choreographer that I am today. First job – The first job I had was when I was 15 and in my last year of school. I was a sales assistant for ‘MK One’ retail store. I really enjoyed it as I was a lover of clothes. I felt really independent as I didn’t have a NI number (social security)

Amazing Fact I was born a few months early and only weighing 3 pounds. I spent most of my time in an incubator with tubes all over the place. The doctor’s spoke to my parents saying that they would give me a few more days to start breathing on my own and if I didn’t they would have to turn the machine (that was keeping me alive) off. With the family praying around me I began breathing on my own but the Doctors said that there was a chance that I may grow with brain complications. I’m here today to tell the story without a complication in sight. Praise God!!!

back then and was getting minimum wage but enjoyed getting my OWN money... sshhh don’t tell any one... lol First car – My first car was a black Mazda which was given to me (shame I didn’t have it long). I was truly blessed but only drove it a few times with my dad in the passenger seat of course as I didn’t have a full licence. First holiday – My first vacation was in Jamaica. I was 18 and excited but scared as it was my first time flying and felt very claustrophobic. Once we got there, we had no time to chill as it was my sisters wedding so we had lots to do but when we had the chance, I took in the scenery and sun.. First personal experience with God – Well from what I can remember, growing up in a Christian family I never really knew if I truly experienced Christ but I did know that I enjoyed going to church and seeing my family (as we were a very tight unit) and enjoyed getting taught in children’s church. A good foundation was put within us and I remember giving my life to Jesus and getting baptised on either my 13th or 15th birthday (cant really remember which one) but it was a huge celebration as all my cousins got baptised that day too,. It was the best choice I ever made at that age.

o which is it; light-as-in-not-heavy or lightas-in-not-dark? Whichever way you read it, the title of the latest LZ7 album released by Fierce! is bang on. With twelve tracks (plus two bonus remixes of the impossibly good YouTube sensation ‘This Little Light’) their label debut is their strongest, brightest and most dynamic work yet. LZ7 are one of the UK’s pioneering bands changing the way Christians (in general) are perceived and showing them a relevant, current Jesus through their music and lifestyle. Set up by Lindz, the bands front-man with a vision to stand for positivity, having a laugh and spreading love everywhere they go. So far they’ve been doing just that in various locations from churches, festivals, school youth clubs and even stadiums. “We have been in Lincoln at the Football stadium…” says an excited Lindz. ”3500 turned up and loads responded to the Gospel… that’s what its all about!!!” One thing that’s great about Lindz and the LZ7 band members is there love for young people and seeing the message of Jesus not only reach their ears but touch their hearts and transform their lives. “LZ7 is all about Jesus” says Lindz. ”Making people smile and breaking their stereotypes of what it is to be a Christian and have a full on living faith relationship with God he continued to say. LZ7 are one of the most pro-active bands in the UK with evangelism at the top of their list of priorities. Every week they go into schools putting on amazing live shows and sharing the Gospel message and helping to make goodness popular again. This keeps them very busy and has seen them embark on a tour that has seen them pack out venues with thousands of people over the last few weeks which has seen hundreds of young people give their lives to the Lord. All of this started from a seed being sown... A desire that lead to Soul Survivor... “I auditioned for the WWMT (World Wide Message Tribe) at Soul Survivor and when that came to an end I really felt God calling me onto

065 a new thing… like something being birthed, and that something was LZ7…” Knowing from a young age that he was made to make a difference seems to have made a big impact on the life of Lindz... Knowing that he was called by God and that God had a purpose for not only him, but his gift too really became the wind beneath his wings. “I knew when I was about 15 that I was gonna do something to do with God and the mission field but never dreamed I would be in a band doing it tho…” We’re sure he never knew it would get as big it is now, reaching #26 in the charts with the lead single ‘This Little Light’ gaining the band heightened levels of credibility in both Christian and mainstream circles. However it has and even for the strongest of Christians, success can sometimes be kind to the ego which is where many fall down and lose their focus... “Keeping my focus on the mission and not getting distracted by the bright lights and anything else that gets in the way of people knowing Jesus…” Having consistent encounters with God is enough to keep anyone grounded and with the schools work Lindz and the rest of the LZ7 guys do they experience enough encounters frequently. “The greatest privilege is seeing what God does in a young persons life whether they meet him for the 1st time or have slipped away from God and are on the way back… God encounters are amazing!!!” The very thought of souls being saved or reconciled to Jesus is enough to get Lindz gleaming and jumping (anyone who’s seen LZ7 live will know that the jumping bit is literal) for joy. “We have to stand up for what we are FOR and be as appealing as possible” says Lindz. Tired of hearing what we’re against, what we’re not for and what you can’t do... He wants to let everyone know what we CAN do and the

066 freedom and liberty that comes with being a Christian. How can we be more active and what can we do to engage with the next generation? “By shining our lights in the darkness… people will see Jesus through the way you act and the way you are with them and that will speak volumes to them…” LZ7 are a part of The Message Trust; an organisation that many of our UK readers will be familiar with. The Message Trust is an awardwinning Christian charity working to improve the lives of young people in Manchester, UK. Working in schools, in local communities and in prisons, The Message is in contact with around 100,000 young people across Greater Manchester each year. They are truly changing many lives. It’s an amazing organisation!! The Message DNA runs throughout our blood of having “faith in young people”… it’s a privilege to represent such an amazing charity! Apples don’t fall far from the tree, and LZ7 are total products of The Message Trust, home to The Worldwide Message Tribe, Blush and others. ‘Light’ is as evangelistic as the sun is hot, with every song drawing the listener back to the source of it all. At times that means being direct – like the songs ‘Four Points’ and ‘Fall At Your Feet’ but LZ7 know how to turn a decent pop lyric too, and songs like ‘Ditto’, ‘Greatest Day’ and ‘Dance This Night Away’ bring all the power of the gospel in a unique way. They’re still just as much a Beastie Boys/Dizzee Rascal/NDubz mash-up, and get the opening seconds of ‘Superstar’, ‘Come Alive’ and the heartshredding ‘Four Points’ up loud enough and your sub-woofers will testify in force. So if you’re a fan of their grime sound don’t worry, you won’t be disappointed. But there’s something light, flexible and nimble about the way that ‘Light’ moves throughout its 53 minutes. One track they’re getting you head-nodding to a confession of sin, the next they’re plugging your feet into the mains in celebration of salvation. ‘Light’ moves around the floor with all the freedom that lies at the heart of the gospel. “Light” represents my life I reckon… not taking things too seriously and living my life in ‘The

light’… love it!!! The single ‘This Little Light’ got to number 26 in the UK Charts. Now those of you from outside of the UK may not know this but Christian music in the UK very rarely charts, so to reach that position in the charts was an awesome experience for Christians around the country and for the Christian music industry here in the UK. When we asked Lindz about the experience he exclaimed... “BOOOOOOOOOOOOM in a word… loved it.. what an experience!!!” With the tour almost finished and a successful album under their belt what could the band be up to next? “The ‘light’ national tour… new single, new album… on and up!!!!” After increasing their ministry, profile and fan base the band are set to do some great things in future. There’s also going to be a change of line-up with the band. We’re guessed OAP’s with zimmer frames need not apply. Anyone wanting to join the band will have to “Sing… Dance… Rap… Goon about and most of all love Jesus and wanna make Him famous” With a passion to see the world changed by the powerful message of Jesus, LZ7 don’t show any signs of stopping and the soon coming new additions to the band reassure us of that. No matter where they go, no matter what they do Lindz and the LZ7 band are on a mission to make Jesus famous, goodness popular and let the world know that being a Christian is FUN... Spreading the ‘Light’.

Have you ever found yourself asking the question, why do I bother? Why do I bother spending so much time talking to someone who never listens, why do I bother doing favours for people who never want to return it, why do I sacrifice so much for individuals who don’t appreciate anything I do? I literally got to the point where I told myself no more, from now on I’m living for me, myself and I. Funny, it’s not that easy, I still managed to find myself slowly crawling back into that trap of putting myself out for others… It can be so frustrating when you feel like you’re giving your all for people who you know when the time comes; they would not be willing to do the same for you. Recently I have been feeling quite disheartened about a number of situations where I found myself going out of my way for others fully aware that they would not make the same sacrifices for me. I don’t often shout out about the sacrifices I make, but when you feel no sense of appreciation there comes a point where that’s exactly what you want to do. A couple of weeks back I saw a picture on a friends BB status with the quote ‘Sometimes we expect more from others because we would do more for them.’ So true. At times it can be hard to understand why someone won’t do what you would. But is it really such a bad thing? Surely it demonstrates something positive about your character and selfless nature. “So in everything, do to others as you would have them do unto them.” Matt 7:12 Like many commands in the Bible this command is not a conditional one. Irrelevant of your situation, circumstance or even the person involved we are to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Deep. I actually had to sit and pause for a moment as I took in the full meaning of this familiar scripture. God’s ways are clearly not our ways. I thought back to the life of Jesus. A man who died for the same people that mocked, beat and crucified Him. The ultimate illustration of this scripture put into practice. Can you imagine if He had the same me, myself and I attitude that I mentioned before? He saw something in us that we could not see ourselves, He looked beyond our thoughts and saw our needs. Often when we do ‘bother’ with others it’s simply because we see

the potential in them or know that we can help them in a way they can’t help themselves. Can we really afford to live in a world where people only care and do things for people who care for them back? Sometimes irrelevant of how we are treated we still need to humble ourselves, remove all pride and do things for someone that may never be reciprocated. Sometimes we need to live the selfless life, a life where you put your own thoughts, feelings and needs to one side to the benefit of someone else. I’m sure if you think back there is at least one point in your life where someone did something for you which has got you where you are today. You may have not showed any gratitude at the time but now realise that the selfless actions of someone else helped you make it through. You must not however give room for people to take advantage of your acts of kindness. More importantly in true friendship/relationships it is crucial that you share your thoughts and feelings if you feel used and unappreciated as it may be that they genuinely do not know how they are making you feel. For those on the other side of this situation…a little thanks goes a long way. Spending valuable time helping or caring about others is not always recognised or immediately rewarded however our motive should not be to get a ‘return on your investment’. By simply choosing to ‘bother’ you could be planting that important seed in someone’s life that is needed to help them get to where God wants them to be. Why do I bother? Because God bothered with me.

Australia’s spectacular Coffs Coast (NSW) is the home of a young, gifted and talented musician... Liz Cole. The vibrant vocalist, composer and pianist continues to inspire, uplift and captivate a vast variety of audiences everywhere she goes bringing music a quality that does not reflect her age. Liz’s unique gift and passionate heart emerge through melodies and rhythms. Having recorded three albums from 2007 to 2011, Liz has touched the hearts of many who have come to experience her gift in song writing, pure vocal tone and elegant piano playing. Liz is the founder of Liz Cole Entertainment and has established a career in professional music performance upon the foundations of 1 Timothy 4:12 – “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” ‘Daughter of the King’ is the fourth studio album from Liz Cole created through twelve months of composing, arranging and recording from 2010 to 2011. The concept of the title track, ‘Daughter of the King’, was inspired by John 1:12... “Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.” This statement, declared by God in His Word, so beautifully encapsulates God’s love for us. That He would send

His son for us, because He so loved the world... that He would adopt us as His own, is beyond comprehension. Other tracks on the album, including ‘Praise Your Name’, ‘Marvellous, Majestic’ and ‘This is the Time’, express Nehemiah 8:10, ‘The joy of the Lord is your strength’, through energetic rhythms and vibrant chord progressions. Slower ballads (‘You Breathe Life’, ‘Cradled’) feature delicate piano accompaniments and soaring melodies, reflective of a desire to draw near to the Lord and to rest in His presence. “I’m passionate about connecting youth with the heart of God, the Holy Spirit and the character of Christ. I would love to see Youth Conferences established nation-wide in Australia. In my hometown of Coffs Harbour, I find an incredible joy in leading worship and evangelising in the public arena with the songs God has given me.” The experience of Liz Cole’s music can only be likened to the experience taking in the beauty of the countryside or resting beside still waters and experiencing that peace. Maybe it’s the smooth, pure tones of her vocals... Maybe it’s the unplugged, acoustic, natural sound her music and the lyrical prowess she exhibits with deep, insightful words delicately placed together to form some awesome songs that uplift, encourage and take you on a journey that ends with God.

During her time in the music industry, Liz has supported the world renown Sydney Orchestra worked with many organizations such as the MakeA-Wish Foundation and various organizations taking her music to many people from various and diverse walks of life. However she believes that the best is yet to come with musical opportunities opening up for her across the world with dates in the USA coming up this summer. “It is humbling and rewarding to be able to share my perspectives and passion for God with the wider community through song. I love to retain direct passages of scripture as lyric content in my compositions; what could be more poetic or beautifully written than a Psalm, a thought expressed by John or one of Christ’s parables? I love exploring and expressing the Word of God through music.” As Liz passionately pursues the heart of God, her desire is to draw her audience members closer to Him through the gift of music, with a desire to reveal the character of Christ through her sensitive song writing ability. With a ministry passion for youth, Liz aspires to establish youth conferences with an emphasis on creative communication, to connect Australian young adults with the heart of God.

We wanted to something different for MUZO SPOT this month but didn’t quite know what to do. When we saw that Parachute Band had done what they call ‘Instrument Workshop Videos’ it was one of those eureka moments... There’s so much great music out there but it’s not every day that you get to watch your favourite musicians break down how they put together a song and learn how to play your favourite songs correctly. The song we’re focussing on is ‘Gave It All’... One of our favourite songs from the ‘Love Without Measure’ album. Elliot Francis breaks down how to play the bass... Sam de Jong shows us how to get that classic Parachute groove going one... Callum Galloway explains the chord structures and makes it very simple and Jeff Parsons shows the secret to getting that awesome guitar sound associated with Parachute Band.

Many times I’ll come across Christians who are my age, but our lives are completely different. Some may spend most of their time at home reading and praying and some may even spend their time in secular clubs. Regardless of how you like to spend your time, our actions and our lives should not only bring glory to God, but it should also be a testimony of the joys of the Lord. Yes, it is possible to enjoy your life as a Christian! I wish I could scream this off the top of a mountain. I don’t understand this whole living as a “serious” Christian who scorns the pleasures of the Lord. You don’t have to scorn the pleasures of the Lord just by declaring it with your mouth, but you can scorn the pleasures of the Lord by the way you react to certain expressions of creativity in the kingdom. I think it’s very important that as believers we recognize the creativity God has placed inside of us. Clearly in Genesis 1, he is introduced to us as the Creator. His essence is creative. If we are made in his image, than we are creative as well. What may look like dark creativity is just a corruption or a prostitution of something God originally created to be good. There are many ways to celebrate life. We celebrate life through arts, music, sports, fashion, entertainment, and many other ways! Why is it such a hard concept to grab that as believers we can enjoy these things as well? But than again, I can understand why many believers may be closed off to these types of pleasures. The enemy works hard to counterfeit, distort, and corrupt what was originally ordained to be good. Which then leads to people of God thinking these things are evil. “You will show me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; and at your right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” - Psalm 16:11 [don’t have my laptop at the moment, so maybe this can be made into some type of graphic quote.] God is a God of pleasure and joy. God created sex, music, art, poetry, drama, and every beautiful and enjoyable thing. The Spirit of Jezebel counterfeits and perverts them so that we are either violated (defiled) or we try to live out our Christian life with no pleasure and joy - which explains why there are so many serious Christians. I believe that a time is coming, indeed it’s here now where God is going to release keys to his kingdom. These keys are going to open up resources and secrets to God’s heart. There are many people who feel the call over their lives to impact one or more of these areas of celebration. God needs us to restore his name in this world! I mean, don’t get me wrong - God is great all by himself. But as believers, we are to be a light into this world. If we are not showing the joys of the Lord, why would anyone else want to experience this joy and new life in Christ Jesus?

There are people within the Christian community who are taking steps to overtake one or more of these areas, but I just see God doing bigger and better things. I encourage you to not put limits on what God can do. The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the Earth to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him. He will equip you accordingly for your mission. Not only will he give you fresh ideas, but he’ll teach you the correct ways to do things. I’m not on that going into the kingdom with a carnal mindset or technique, but I’m talking about something completely fresh and new from God. I also believe that the prophetic gifting plays a huge role in this area as well. Knowing how to discern the works of the enemy and also being able to hear the voice of God clearly as he’s giving you instruction on how to attack the particular area. Every one of these areas can prophesy of God and can prophesy to a culture. God is always on the move and this is why I believe that we should always be advancing the kingdom as well. We cannot prophesy with 400-year-old ways of thinking that don’t carry something fresh and revelatory about God. God is ready to release those fresh and creative sounds, fashions, and forms of art! It’s time that we step our game up - to say the least. Greater is he that is in me, than he that is in the world! The enemy continues to prophesy to an entire generation through his dark and lustful counterfeits. Prayer strategy is going to play a huge role in the area as well. If you are going to attack one of these areas, you must have clean hands. Our brains can come up with logical strategies, but we must have the mind of Christ to access wisdom from above. The information we gather and the spiritual mapping we do can assist us in diagnosing arenas and centers of darkness. However, the effective strategies of prayer will come to prophetic people who understand and value the hearing of God. Those who will succeed at this mission will not be just your typical status quo Christian. But it will be those who will seek the face of God and allow him to pour into him his secrets. These are just a few of the keys God is going to release in this season. Last but not least, God will release keys of divine connection. He will open up doors that no man can shut. He will allow the finances, the talent, and most importantly the anointing to flow. It’s time that we make his presence known. The Earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, and very soon - everyone will know it.

The Story It was Sunday morning, the two of them stood in front of the church building staring steadily at each other. The crowd slowly moved away in fear for their lives. The silence was deafening. Parents sent their children running while they tried to keep the situation calm, some holding babies tried to get away as quickly as they could without drawing too much attention to themselves. The slightest movement that startled could mean death for many people. The 2 of them stood face to face, eye to eye. The non-Christian child held a gun to the Christian child’s face, slowly tightening the grip around the trigger. The Christian raised his hand to the chest of the other child and started to write on it. Those gathered nearby couldn’t see what the Christian child was doing. Adults, gathered around, wondering how they could prevent the worst possible conclusion. They started to pray on this Sunday morning which had begun just like any other, but this was no normal Sunday. As they prayed something started to happen… the Christian Child still with his arm raised to the others’ chest opened his hand, and there, in his palm was a red crayon. The adults fell to their knees and started to weep, as the other boy paused for a moment, then pulled the trigger. He then turned and continued to waste the shots he had left, saving the last for himself. The Christian parents and the rest of the congregation wept knowing they were mostly responsible that the little Christian boy died in such a way. The Parents had not discipled their child and the church they attended had used their years of training him, to give him art and craft as the application for what he learned. He was average at handling a crayon, but powerless at moving in the gifts and with the power of God. When the time came for that boy to rise up in the face of danger, he drew on all he knew, and the little experience he had been given, which was well short of what God had made available to him. All he knew to do was to write on the chest of the other boy. “You have been misled, and I have been ill equipped”. The Challenge That day a truth was revealed, the truth that in many places in the body of Christ we are robbing our kids. Teaching them to be average at art and clueless when it comes to calling on the power of God, and moving in His Spirit. The emerging generation in general is looking for a challenge; they are looking for something that they can give their lives for, even to the point of blowing themselves up for their beliefs. We as Christians don’t condone the latter obviously, but we must be ready to fight on a spiritual level, Ephesians 6:12 “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms”. The weapons of our warfare are prayers of faith, lives of hope and actions of love through the power of the Holy Spirit. We must train up our children and young people with a passion and zeal for God to rival the passion and zeal

shown by heroes of the faith who have literally laid down their lives for the Kingdom and its expansion around the world. Children, teens and young adults are able to be used to change lives, change communities and to change nations, but they must be raised with Godly character and have their Godly gifts nurtured while moving in the power of the Holy Spirit that is available to them too. Training them is costly. We need to be radical, to believe in them, inspire them with dreams of being famous for Jesus to the point where even hell is concerned (Acts19:15) and bring out a Godly boldness in them that will stand in their generation. Training them is also including them as we model a life of sacrifice, chasing after heaven’s dreams. Training them in power, love and a sound mind. Training them will mean for us to come out of our comfort zones and enter into their world. Training them is not just a classroom with multimedia, great art and crafts, and giving them things the world can offer, often with greater quality. Will you stand up and take responsibility with us to disciple our kids, our youth and our young adults and help mobilize a whole generation to reach the next? I have never been to a mission’s conference where they talk about reaching the next generation in the context of missions, but this is a key factor. Psalm 45:17 “I will perpetuate your memory through all generations; therefore the nations will praise you for ever and ever.” You see David’s determination was to pass on to the next generation so that the entire nation will praise God. In MEX Mag Issue 1 (Click Here), I talked about how raising the next generation is a Biblical command on the life of EVERY believer, it is NOT a calling. We are all responsible to take up this baton, and see the emerging generations prepared for the days we are living in. To see them stand uncompromising in their faith and ready to reach the ends of the earth. I have a dream that parents raise soldiers and bring them to the body of Christ that forms them into an army to reach the lost. Could you imagine the opening story: the Christian Child going out on a much higher level? He may have still died, he may have lived, but to go out in honor, in knowing his Father intimately. The Christian child could have said something like “You may kill me because I’m a Christian, but that won’t change Jesus’ love for you. I no longer live for myself ”. This child had learned through experience that perfect love casts out fear. He wouldn’t have learned that through a crayon, but through discipleship.
