Fabrice Muamba: I’m Still Standing is one of the books of the year. A life-affirming tale of courage and triumph that will surprise, fascinate and ultimately inspire you.

#PRAY FOR T

HEY say that when you die, your life flashes before your eyes. Fabrice Muamba has been there. He knows. Muamba was the Bolton Wanderers player who collapsed during a televised FA Cup match against Tottenham Hotspur. After receiving emergency treatment on the pitch from medical personnel (including a consultant cardiologist who was at the game as a fan) he was rushed to a coronary care unit at the London Chest Hospital. Muamba’s heart stopped beating for 78 minutes but amazingly he survived. He made a remarkable recovery that has engrossed and enthralled both the footballing and wider world.

collapse. Born in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Muamba was brought up surrounded by the terror of a civil war and without a father who was forced to flee to the UK in 1994 because of his links to unpopular President Mobutu Sese Seko. Muamba was not reunited with his father until 1999 when he moved to London aged 11. This schoolboy, who could not speak a word of English, then displayed

the kind of strength and faith that would become his hallmark, achieving 10 GCSEs before swiftly rising to the top of the English game, firstly with Arsenal and Birmingham City before his final spell at Bolton.

Although it is Muamba’s cardiac arrest and his wonderful resurgence that has brought him into the public eye, the truth is that he had already lived a remarkable life prior to his

HAIR

TEXT AMBER-RENEÉ

With weaves becoming increasingly popular for many women today, here are a few tips to help you with the maintenance of your weave insuring your hair feels and looks great:

Oil

Wash before installing

One of the most common mistakes when wearing weave is using too much oil or serum in excessive amounts. Sometimes we fail to remember that most of the weave types we use are dissimilar to afro textured hair, therefore oil is not always needed. There are times when the hair may look dry or lack moisture; however by using a small amount of serum this problem can be corrected. Therefore, using a lot of oil can make the hair look synthetic, unnatural and heavy.

I have conversed with friends who have stated that they remove new hair straight from the package and install it. However, it is encouraged to pre-wash and condition the hair first. For instance, most hair has been chemically processed therefore, pre-washing provides an opportunity to wash away any residue and leave the hair clean and fresh.

Heat Although most women often use hot appliances when grooming their hair, using too much heat will cause the hair to become dry. If the weave is damaged from using too much heat, the hair will remain this way and it will be impossible to reverse this effect. The best way to deal with damaged ends is to trim them off and maintain the hair with regular conditioning treatments. Just like natural hair, human hair extensions can also develop split ends which can encourage shedding and breaking. Try to avoid using heat often by opting for bendy rollers, pin curls or try installing natural wavy hair wefts as an alternative.

Cutting the wefts Most people tend to cut the wefts on the weave whilst installing it, however after weaving my hair for some years I have realised that cutting the wefts can be damaging to the quality and volume of the hair. Cutting increases shedding and eventually this will make the hair look limp and fine. In addition to this, by not cutting the wefts, it remains as one continuous length allowing the hair to be used again.

Reducing bulkiness There is nothing worse than seeing hair that has been installed incorrectly. Braiding the natural hair in a specific direction is vital to creating a neat and natural look prior to installation of the wefts. There are different styles and directions in which the natural hair can be cornrowed. Most people tend to think that braiding in a spiral motion around the circumference of the head is the best technique, however, as the hair grows it raises the hair wefts significantly off the head, giving your hair a bulkylike appearance. Therefore, it is best to consult with your hair stylist or try out new braiding patterns in order to make sure your weave lies flat for a longer period. Finally look after your hair and “Love your Hair”

INTERVIEW

MEXMAG

W

e caught up with Abandon band member Justin Engler to talk about the band and their 2011 release ‘Control’. One thing you don’t normally hear about a modern Rock band is that they started as a worship team… Something that is immediately intriuging and is likely to be a contributing factor into what makes Abandon stand out o from the crowd taking the next natural evolutionary musical step, while also turning inward for their greatest lyrical depth to date. For our readers from all around the world who may not know who you are, tell us a bit about you, your music, who/what influences you and finally how you got where you are today. “We are a Christian Rock band that started as a worship team. We started writing our own music and felt called to take our music and God’s message

22

to the world, so we started calling churches and booking our own tours. Our music can be described as Switchfoot and U2 meets for coffee. Our Influences are God, our parents, life, love, the Bible, and famous quotes. How we got where we are today is by God’s grace and a lot of hard work and prayer!” The name Abandon was inspired by scripture and the thought that we should forget about the things of the world to focus on the things of Christ. That’s a great name with a great meaning... Did you get the name as soon as you read the scripture? What made you settle on the name Abandon? “The name ”Abandon” comes from Luke 9:23 that says, ”And he said to them all, if any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” So we are to ”Abandon” our desires and follow Christ daily. We believed it fit what we we’re called to do.”

You got discovered in a quite random way... A&R man Chris York was in a restaurant next door and heard the great music, came in and the rest (as they say) is history. What do you remember about that night? “Yeah, we were playing a show at the Rutledge in Nashville. Had a great show, and great time meeting some other bands and fans. Then the next day we received a message via MySpace and it was Chris York wanting to talk more about possibly working together. At first we didn’t take him seriously because we had gotten a lot of those messages on MySpace. But then he told us who he was and who he had signed, so we got back to him right away.” What has been your biggest challenge as a band (from the start of the journey until now)? “Our biggest challenge would have to be balancing Family and Ministry. Both are vital, and finding that healthy

MEXMAG

INTERVIEW

Control’ is about the beauty of giving God control. Everyday, it’s a struggle of who’s going to be in control of your life - is it you? Or is it God?

balance is vital as well.” When did you realise you had a call on your life to minister through music and how did you know that you should be a recording, touring band and not volunteer worship leaders in your churches? “We just felt something in our hearts to take our songs, and the music that God had given us, to our nation and to the world. There are so many people who are hurting and feeling the pressures of life, and we felt God had given us songs that would encourage, and give hope to those that need it. We feel honoured to be a part of Gods hands and feet to reach His world.” What has been your funniest moment together as a band? Gosh, we have a lot of stories, from mis-pronounced words, to just being so tired we laugh at anything. But once, we were playing a show, and to get the crowd even more excited, Stevan Vela

went to jump up on the kick drum of Dave’s set. Well, what he didn’t notice was that his guitar chord was too short and while in the air it stopped him, and he went stomach/ribs into the edge of the drum. Needless to say, it took a few seconds to get back up, and the show went on. What are the different roles of the band members? e.g. who’s the joker, who’s the ’cool guy’ who’s the gadget freak etc We all try to be funny, but Josh is more the gadget guy. Steve, Dave, Bryan, and I are the cool guys (laughing). How do you go about taking what you’ve recorded in the studio and turning it into a great live show? “We started recording with that in mind. We put a lot more parts in each song where the audience can get more involved, like claps, stomps, and hoo’s and haa’s.”

We know that with many artists, when they release an album it’s a reflection of where they’re at in their lives. What does ‘Control’ say about where you are in your life and which song do you think represents that best? ‘Control’ is about the beauty of giving God control. Everyday, it’s a struggle of who’s going to be in control of your life - is it you? Or is it God? And that’s where we found ourselves as we wrote this album. Every song shows a different emotion and struggle, but ‘Why Does It Take So Long’ is probably the song that represents what we had been going through the most. Any final words? To all our friends, family, and future friends, we love you and God has a plan and purpose for your life! ”You’re part of a grand design bigger then what you had in mind.” Find out more HERE:

LIFE

TEXT ROBYN HENRY PHOTO ERIC FEFERBERG/AFP/GETTY IMAGES

The London 2012 Olympics brought the nation together in celebration of the sheer hard work, effort and determination of athletes from all around the world. Whatever their chosen sport, there was no mistaking the fact that every medal won was reflective of true talent, focus and disciplined skill.

T

he furore of the opening and closing ceremonies, were a showcase to the world of all things British, displaying an eclectic array of history, music and industry. Every competitor who qualified for the games went through hours and hours of training to secure their place. Their hard work spoke for its self and their success was built on substance, which is a breath of fresh air compared to the examples of success we often see in the media. Alongside tremendous ability and physique, the charisma, confidence and self belief displayed by track and field legend Usain Bolt, gains him even more of an advantage over his competitors. Far from shy and retiring, it could be said that Bolt gains a head start over his competitors with his winner’s mentality. It is clear that Bolt considers himself a winner before he even sets foot on the track and his Olympic gold after gold medal at the London games demonstrated this clearly. So, could we all do with a bit of Bolt-like boldness? How do we as Christians still demonstrate characteristics of humility whilst trying to get ahead? Humility is defined as a modest or low view of one’s own importance. Ego on the other hand, is a person’s sense of self esteem or self importance. There are many challenges a Christian might face trying to live humbly, particularly in today’s culture. As Christians there can sometimes be awkwardness around speaking of your accomplishments or even accepting praise, but there is a difference between humility and forced modesty. Surely it’s ok to own a compliment! Athletes like Bolt show that a winner’s attitude combined with skill and ability are essential if you want to achieve. In the grand scheme of things, how important is it to be ‘successful’ anyway? Is it ok to desire to do more or have more than you already have? Indeed, it is important to be content with your lot in life; however this shouldn’t stop us from having dreams and aspirations and trying our utmost best to

accomplish them. Success is not necessarily wealth and riches, it’s living the best version of life possible; it is the ‘zoe’ life, which speaks of the higher life that God has called each of us who’ve accepted Him through Christ. It is easy to feel despondent if you’re not sure about what you want to do with your life. Seeing all the ‘go-getters’ race ahead to pursue their chosen professions and interests is motivating, but might also feel a little disheartening, especially if you have no idea what you would like to do! Social media sites such as Twitter have made self PR easier than ever before, enabling anyone and everyone climbing that ladder to document their progress along the way. News feeds provide snapshot into your world (or at least as we choose to portray it) and there may even be a temptation to present a notion of perfection. It’s important not to compare your life with others’ as you have to live your dream. Think about what you’d like to do and then do it! Once you know what it is you’re called to, don’t hold back. Each of our lives has a purpose and the potential to be as fulfilling as we’d like it to be, but we’ve got to make it happen. Britt Nicole’s song, ’Ready or Not’, from her aptly named album, ‘Gold’ speaks of not hiding, but taking what you have to the world. Ultimately wherever we go, the love of God follows because His ‘...love is shed abroad in our hearts...’(Romans 5:5 KJV), so whichever way we look at it, if we’re making an impact in our calling, we’re in a better position to have a positive influence on the people we come in contact with. Even if what you want to do doesn’t seem all that exciting, that’s ok too! In the pursuit of being humble we shouldn’t be so discreet that we end up hiding! Each of us was made to make an individual mark on the world that no one in the past has made before and no one in the future could ever repeat. So, go on… Go for gold!

PAUL BALOCHE A E

ach new song from The Same Love was birthed from genuinely inspired moments through which lyrics and melodies were created. But there were also moments in between the songs where Baloche felt there was more to be said. The Same Love: A Devotion is that collection, a progression of thoughts and prayers that compliment the lyrics and message of the songs.

With The Same Love: A Devotion, Baloche provides a tangible way to go deeper. For instance, while diving into the message of the song that became the title track of the book and album, Baloche shares inspiration from Mark 5.21-43, where Jesus healed a sick woman and raised a synagogue leader’s daughter from death. Going through this passage of scripture, Baloche then compels the reader to apply the story personally.

“Songwriting is a big part of my spiritual life,” Baloche shares. “It helps me go deeper with God. It helps me fix my mind on Jesus, to set my mind on things above. It keeps my own heart fresh and alive, for myself, my family and the church.”

“The same love that spread the heavens wide and was crucified and raised Jairus’ little girl and sent a woman back into her new life is calling to you today,” relays Baloche in the book. “Your situation and circumstances will be unique to you because you are unique. Maybe the same love is challenging you to live what you believe….maybe that same love is simply calling your name to remind you of your worth in God’s eyes. Different times, different stories, different needs, but a love that is the same yesterday, today, and forever calling, ‘Come to me now.’”

In Baloche’s spiritual walk, the church is both a beacon and the passion that fuels his own journey. “I try to be mindful that I’m putting words into the mouths of God’s people,” he explains, aware that these songs can give believers a vocabulary to sing back to God. “And when they sing those words, hopefully it will act as a catalyst in their heart, so something will happen in them. Because when we sing, it goes down deep into our soul.”

Taking the message of these songs on the road, Baloche’s touring/ workshop/teaching schedule takes him around the world. In the coming months, he will host Leadworship

BOOK FEATURE

In the spring of last year, modern worship trailblazer Paul Baloche released his widely acclaimed 12th album, The Same Love, which forged a progressive path musically. Baloche is now offering deeper insight into each of the 13 songs on the album with the book release from David C Cook, ’The Same Love: A Devotion’.

Workshops throughout the U.S., as well as travel abroad to Brazil, UK, Ireland and Canada. Best known for such modern classics as “Open the Eyes of My Heart,” “Above All,” “Hosanna,” and “Your Name,” Baloche’s songs have been recorded by numerous artists, including Michael W. Smith, Casting Crowns, Matt Redman and Philips, Craig & Dean. And this three-time Dove Award-winning writer’s songs are sung by millions of worshippers around the world, with 21 of them included in the CCLI Top 500 list, indicating the songs most often used in North American churches. In addition to writing, recording, touring and celebrating 20 years as the worship pastor at Community Fellowship in Lindale, TX, Baloche has created a variety of teaching DVDs, along with many free resources designed specifically for worship leaders and musicians. He has also written the book, God Songs –How to Write and Select Songs for Worship. He is a contributing writer for both Worship Leader and Worship Musician magazines and is a featured blogger on ChurchLeaders. com.

PAIN WITH

PURPOSE

Most of us are afraid of pain. It’s not something that we volunteer to go through, yet even pain has an assigned purpose in our lives.

In our physical bodies pain alerts us to the fact that something is amiss and that we need to check out what is happening.

a bereavement in a particular family, although we have genuine sympathy we who are unaffected by the loss are able to quickly move on and continue as normal.

For some this has saved their lives and averted danger. What about pain in the emotional sense? Emotional upsets though unwelcomed can have some life transforming results. We often walk around unaware of the pain and suffering of others, and when we hear that there has been

When we experience the loss of a close family member we are not just bereaved, our whole world is turned upside down. The devastation of the loss is complete and utter, that if anyone had tried to explain it to us, we would not have grasped or believed it.

PURPOSE TEXT YVONNE BROOKS PHOTO GETTY IMAGES

”When I lost my father I was amazed that the world simply carried on as normal having been unaffected by his departure.” My brother Probyn Lanceford Clarke (Bobby) was an extremely skilled drummer and played in a group called “Paradise”. They were cutting edge, innovative and highly skilled in writing and performing music and he was of course the best looking member of the family (or at least that’s what he told me anyway). Later on he also played for groups like London Beat, Terence Trent D’Arby, East 17 and other groups around the world. He became very ill and as a consequence he was unable to function. On leaving the house he would sometimes collapse in the street. Members of the public would assume he was drunk and or homeless and literally walk around him. He would often lay in the street for hours before being able to get enough energy to make it home. As a result of his experience I can never ever look at a homeless person in the same way, I cannot remain unmoved by their plight. I have to help if I can. Could it be that the result of our pain or painful experience’s (or one of its purpose’s) is to sensitize or activate us so that we can engage in our purpose? Forgetting momentarily that your loved one is gone only to have the memory rush back, crushing you all over again; this doesn’t happen once but over and over as you negotiate your way through the grieving process. (There are five stages in grieving although some have identified seven. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Kubler – Ross ) When I lost my father I was amazed that the world simply carried on as normal having been unaffected by his departure. It was the illness and the death of my brother though that caused me to realise that there is a great purpose in our pain.

Countless causes have been created as a result of the suffering of loved ones whose families then go on to do something to relieve the conditions and suffering of others in tribute to the one they lost. Your pain, if channelled properly will result in the birth of a response that can change someone’s world. What is your painful experience activating in you right now, what feelings are you experiencing? What will you do about it? How can you improve/ change conditions? Your pain has a purpose don’t just take pain killers to over-ride it; find out what God is wanting to bring into the world as a result of your pain. Pain comes with Purpose.

This latest single is from his free mixtape “How The Story Continues Vol. 1” and features Reith spittin’ knowledge over a track that is reminiscent of 90s East Coast Hip-Hop. It’s a favorite for GOOD reason!

Larry Callahan & Selected of God— “Dwell In Me”

This choir gained national prominence after being Regional Winners of Verizon’s How Sweet the Sound Choir Competition. They were also prominently featured in the Chrysler 300 Super Bowl commercial along with Eminem in 2011. Simply put, this choir SINGS!! This new single is an upbeat tune that brings together pure Funk with incredible vocals. This one is SURE to get you rockin’!

B. Slade—“Love Is Kind”

For over a decade, regardless of genre and presentation, B. Slade has consistently been one of the most skilled vocalists and producers in our industry. This latest single is a great take on the popular single “People Everyday” from Arrested Development and shares the simple and profound message about the kind nature of love. Add this single to the long list of incredible music coming from this enigmatic artist.

Sheri Jones-Moffett—“Shine”

This Grammy award nominee made incredible waves as the lead vocalist on the single “Encourage Yourself” from Donald Lawrence & Company. Her debut project produced incredible singles and made her a huge favorite among our audience. “Shine” is the brand new single from her sophomore project. Featuring production from Myron Butler, this track sees Jones-Moffett in an upbeat, live presentation which is simply outstanding. You’re guaranteed to sing this track early and often.

Crane and A-1—“Lose It” featuring Canton Jones

This duo comes out with both guns blazing with this highly energetic single. Serving as the lead single from Canton Jones’ “Kingdom Business 4” project, this track is certain to excite you and will definitely make you want to “Lose It”!!

TEXT MATT BROOKS PHOTO THE GUARDIAN

Now I realise that the title may have lost a few people thinking ”really?” What can we learn from a sport where the players hurl racist abuse at each other, swear until their hearts are content and where many fans abuse alcohol and engage in hooliganism? The answer to this question came to me while watching the European football competition Euro 2012. While watching the competition, I noticed something that until that point I had never payed much attention to. While watching England play (terribly) I saw fans of numerous different (and even rival clubs) come together for a united cause. For those moments while England played, fans put aside their differences and even their rivalries (some of which are so fuelled by hate that in times past fans have been seriously injured or even sadly lost their lives in street fights and pub brawls) to come together to support and cheer on their country. In a normal football match, you would never find a Manchester United fan sitting next to a Man City fan or a Millwall fan next to a West Ham fan; however in these international games they will sit next to each other and when England score; jump up and down with and even hug each other as they celebrate with their country. So what can the church learn from this? What am I getting at? The church is referred to as the Kingdom of God and the body of Christ. Even though this is the case, there is often a lot of

segregation between different denominations and churches with different doctrinal beliefs. Unlike the football fans, we often don’t put our differences aside and come together for the sake of the Kingdom and health of the body of Christ so we can effectively win our communities, cities and nations for Christ! When we start to forget about our ’rivalries’ and focus on what unifies us and not what divides us we will see a change and the world will see the change too and things will never be the same. Here in the UK we recently had the Global Day Of Prayer, which was held at Wembley stadium, the UK’s largest and most prestigious football stadium. In excess of 40’000 people were in attendance from all cultures, backgrounds and denominations who came together to pray and worship on behalf of the world and the United Kingdom. Is there any significance in the fact that this event took place in the stadium in which the England football team plays their international home games and where the fans I spoke of leave their rivalries behind and come together to support their country? I’m not so spiritual that I think there is, however the parallels are uncanny and I believe if the church is going to take her place in society and make the impact that God desires to see then we may just have to become a little more like international football fans...

TRIBUTE TO MARVIN MCQUITTY

On 15th November 2002 I met a man that changed my life. That man was Marvin McQuitty Jnr. I had met him once before as a young pre-teen who had just started playing the drums but this occasion was special...

LEFT Marvin and fellow future Rythm Alliance founder/ member Gerald Heywood

In 2004 I conducted my very first interview… An interview with Marvin McQuitty. Fast forward 8 years and I’m the “senior editor” and founder of M.E.X Magazine. Thanks for sowing this seed in me Uncle Marv.

A

s a child I always wanted to play the drums but never had a drum kit and there wasn’t one in my church at the time. However, it was when I watched Fred Hammond & Radical For Christ’s ‘Pages Of Life Chapters I & II’ live video that a passion for music and in particular drumming was ignited. From then on I threw myself into drumming head first and watched that video religiously admiring a type of drumming that I had never heard before and being inspired and motivated by Marvin’s playing.

to me and showing a genuine interest in me, which took me by surprise. I was also going to be playing for my sister who was a support act for the concert and he gave me words of wisdom and encouragement that helped settle my nerves and boosted my confidence… What surprised me most was that while I was playing, he left the changing rooms and BELOW Marvin with Teddy came to listen to me play… Again he encouraged me and said that Campbell, Gerald he enjoyed my playing, which Heyward, Nisan Stweart and Aaron coming from him was the biggest Spears compliment in the world.

After the concert he came to me and gave me a snare drum head (which he later told me was used on a live recording which turned out to be the ‘Pages Of Life Chapter III – Speak Those Things’ DVD) and some drumsticks with messages of encouragement on them, which made my day. After the last concert date, just as Marvin was about to leave I asked if I could keep in touch and he said yes and gave me his email address. To be honest I didn’t expect a man who was

By 15th November 2002 I had developed as a drummer and had long chosen my favourite drummer in the whole world… Marvin McQuitty. Fred Hammond & RFC were in the UK and I had the privilege of having the role of being Marvin’s drum tech. I was shy and nervous about meeting him but what blew me away was that I didn’t have to introduce myself to him… He introduced himself to me. Straight away he got talking

world-renown and so busy, not only drumming but also being a road manager, producer and more to have time to respond to a 15 year old kid from England… BUT he did. From then on a relationship started and we exchanged emails and spoke on AIM (AOL instant messenger) regularly for what would be a time frame of 10 years. Without fail he would encourage my spirit before my flesh and encourage me to seek the face of God or as he would always say to me, “Stay in God’s face!” 3 things that I learned from Marvin that changed my life were: That I should be a worshipper first and a drummer second. While drum teching him I saw something that until then I had never seen before. During one of the songs he put down his drumsticks and began to worship. He taught me that my worship wasn’t tied to the drums and the importance of worship and having a relationship with God and I attribute his influence on me to the fact that I developed a relationship

40

with God and have devoted my life to Him. Not only that but every musician that ever came to me for advice or mentorship always got encouragement to seek God and build a relationship with Him… A result of the seed Marvin sowed in me. To be nice. If Marvin would have been arrogant and cold hearted, I honestly don’t know how that would have affected me. As I grew as a musician, I got to travel a bit (mostly throughout the UK and Europe) and young musicians started to look up to me and I found myself responding to them in the same way he responded to me… With love, generosity and time to sow into them with time, encouragement, prayer and support. Had he been arrogant, mean or stuck up, (at the impressionable age of 15) it’s quite possible that I would have learned that behavior and thought that it was OK because, if Marvin does it, it must be OK right? Thankfully his kindness towards me was definitely a seed and looking back now I can see that, that

seed bore great fruit and the spirit of love and kindness Marvin operated in was planted in me and experienced by people everywhere I went. To be skillful. Marvin was a drummer’s drummer… He really hit those drums like he meant it with passion and finesse. I saw him operate as a road manager and again I saw him operate with great skill in that role. In fact, Marvin’s diverse skill set inspired me to take a totally different educational route. Instead of going to college to do a performance/ drumming based course, I studied music technology to develop myself in areas of production and live sound engineering which I later took further in University with the addition of music business and administration. By doing this my skill-set improved drastically and so when I would work with artists they always got more than a drummer… Someone who could bring production, management skills and music industry knowledge to the table. Marvin came back to the UK for some

drum clinics and again I was working with him… While he was here I got to spend some more time with him where he could speak into my life and encourage me as a young man, a Christian and a musician. Marvin was so in tune with God’s spirit that it made me desire the same. What Marvin didn’t know is that I had been praying for God to make a way for me to get a pair of Hi-Hats that cost over £300 (for the drummers they were 13” Zildjian Avedis Mastersound Hi-Hats) that I really just couldn’t afford. While Marvin was encouraging me, he walked over to the other side of the room where his drum equipment was, put his hand in his cymbal bag and pulled out the EXACT Hi-Hats I had been praying for and said “God told me to give these to you.” That was a real WOW moment for

me… I was speechless and in awe of God answering my prayer and also Marvin’s sensitivity to God. He also gave me drumsticks that I still have to this day… Marvin was a GREAT role model. He LOVED the Lord, he loved his wife and he loved his daughters, he loved his music and he loved people and people loved him. When I look back on the last 10 years having Marvin as a mentor I can truly say that he stayed true to his own saying… “Don’t just make your mark… Blow a hole in it!” I can truly say that he blew a hole in my life and the lives of countless others and he will be forever missed but his legacy will live on through each person who chooses to use their gift to glorify God and embodies

a spirit of humility and kindness like they saw him do. I find it quite strange that Marvin spent the last years of his life serving faithfully working in the audio ministry of his church, which is where I have found myself in recent years, giving others the opportunity to play while I fulfill a need in my church. Marvin famously said, “You’re not a success unless you have a successor.” Am I his successor? No! However I do believe that Marvin’s example and input in my life has helped me become who I am today and made me realize from 15 years of age that having a genuine love for God makes all the difference, that humility is important, that serving is necessary and that acts of kindness can change lives forever, just like how his

changed mine. Whenever I think about Marvin now, I feel so honoured and privileged to have been exposed to him and known even just a tiny percentage of the man that he was and this phrase comes to mind… “I’m overwhelmed that you called me friend.” Rest In Peace Uncle Marv… Your input, encouragement and impartation in my life has a lot to do with who I am today and I will NEVER forget what you’ve done for me. I will do my best to treat others that I have influence over in the way that you treated me because through you, I learned that just a small act of kindness can truly transform a persons life…

READY FOR

LOVE? 44

As a young (ish) Christian I’ve noticed that one of the most popular topics that the majority of my friends and colleagues talk (and even tweet about) is ”finding the one,” ”love” and of course the ”M” word... ”Marriage.”

MEXMAG

LOVE

TEXT MATT BROOKS PHOTO THINKSTOCK.COM

Are you ready to be that man who if put in the “Adam and Eve situation” wouldn’t have eaten the fruit and covered your wife, bringing her back to right thinking and repentance to God?

day lead to marriage... It didn’t, but the approach was right and when it came time for it to end we were left with a friendship that is still intact 3 years after the relationship ended.

HAVE YOU UNPACKED? A lot of people go into relationships with a truck load of baggage. Before moving on, it’s always a good idea to release the pains and hurts of past relationships because if you don’t they will surely unpack themselves in your new relationship and potentially be detrimental to the health of your current/new relationship.

U

nlike a lot of people I have a different view to the whole relationship thing... As a 25-year-old single man I’m pretty comfortable as I am, however when the time is right (with the direction of God) I will change that. This is most likely because of the way I was raised. My dad made it clear that we (my brother Adam and I) were never under any circumstances to play around with any young lady and that didn’t just stop with the physical but also a young lady’s emotions too. Because of this I’ve only ever had one “girlfriend” and that relationship had the covering of both of our parents as well as our Pastor’s and was set up to one-

It’s also important to unpack your expectations... It is really easy to have expectations for someone new to do things for you that a previous partner did and it’s often easy to use the good things your previous partner did and expect someone new to do the same not taking into account that this new person is exactly that... A new person; someone different who expresses themselves differently and not just your previous partner but the improved version (2.0).

ARE YOU READY? One of the things that amaze’s me about a lot of people today is the list of requirements many people have for what they’re looking for in a partner. One of the things I always ask myself is “Matt, what are you bringing to the table?” Before you even look for love it’s important to be ready and prepared for love. As a Christian man one of the most important things for me is to be a leader submitted to God and a covering over my household leading my wife and children into a life that is pleasing to the Lord... That is a great responsibility and is one that makes me take the process of finding a wife VERY seriously. Are you ready to be that man who if put in the “Adam and Eve situation” wouldn’t have eaten the fruit and covered your wife, bringing her back to right thinking and repentance to God? Are you a Ruth? Making the sacrifice to serve out of love wanting nothing in return (which inevitably led to her meeting Boaz)?

45

LOVE

MEXMAG

Does that person possess the necessary qualities both spiritually and naturally to be your spouse and parent to your children?

SUBMISSION Men, are you ready to submit? Women are often bombarded with the topic of submission while the men often seem to get away with it... I recently heard submission spoke of in a different way... Sub means “beneath” and “below” so we can see that submission could be viewed as being under a mission. So what is this mission? God’s mission. God has a plan for our lives (which leads on to my next point) but before we go there there’s a quote that I’ve heard my dad say a lot and it goes like this... “If a man submits to his wife’s Godly need, she will submit to his Godly lead.” Not meaning that if a man submits to God, a wife will do whatever the husband wants but rather, if a husband is following the leading of God, he will be lead by God and the way he treats his wife will reflect that allowing them to submit to God’s mission and of course to each other in love.

PURPOSE I’m a strong believer in purpose and destiny and I think they are intertwined with mission and submission. When thinking about getting into a relationship are you more concerned with the way a person looks, their “swag,” or even their nationality? I take the view that when choosing a spouse you MUST think about the purpose God has placed on your life and where He is taking you and seek God about whether this person fits in with those plans. They may be perfect in every way but

46

if they don’t fit in with God’s plan for your life then is that really a journey worth travelling? What is your purpose? Has that been revealed to you? I can only imagine that marrying someone who will stifle your purpose or maybe not be in full support of it must be terrible and so knowing your purpose and where God is taking you is very important when thinking about entering into a relationship. I’m a strong believer that marriage (especially with Christian’s) is about far more than just love and romance. God believes in being fruitful and multiplying and not only in the sense of having children. What will the fruit of your relationship be? Will the fruit your relationship produces feed and nourish a generation and bring life or will it produce negativity that could poison generations to come and turn them away from God?

H U S B A N D/ W I F E CREDENTIALS Does the person you think is beautiful/handsome with an amazing personality and of course is a “mighty man/woman of God” have husband/wife credentials? The reason why I’ve only been in one relationship isn’t because of a lack of opportunity but rather, deep thought and consideration. From an early age I’ve always taken the attitude that if a woman doesn’t have what I’m looking for in my wife and mother of my children then I won’t waste

my time or more importantly hers. There are a lot of broken/ hurt people out there who have been hurt because people just wanted to be in a relationship rather than one that is led by God and purpose driven. The next time you see that person you think is “the one,” check your motives and think about it seriously. Does that person possess the necessary qualities both spiritually and naturally to be your spouse and parent to your children? Break it down. What are the things you expect in a spouse? What roles will they take on in the home? That independent/ social characteristic may seem attractive now but it may not be when you’re married and your spouse is always out with

MEXMAG

friends and you’re home alone or always wanting to take you with them when you really just love to be cosy, in doors in your house.

EMOTIONAL PURITY We are bombarded with information on sexual purity as single Christians... But what is amazing to me is the lack of teaching there is on emotional purity. After all, in a lot of cases

the reason that sexual impurity occurs is because of emotional imbalance or emotional impurity. Do you seek attention so bad that you’ll take it from whoever wants to give it to you? Do you find yourself getting involved with people you have no intention of marrying just to “fill the gap” and have someone to go on dates with? Do you have issues with jealousy? Are you insecure? Do you fall in love with every person who smiles at you or shows him/ herself to be friendly? Are you desperate? Yes? Maybe it’s time to look within and deal with these things rather than looking for a relationship.

LOVE

There’s so much more to relationships than what I’ve mentioned in this article but when I think about relationships and the reason for my being single these are a few of the things that come to mind. Rather than day dreaming about the perfect wedding day or the trophy wife, I’d love to encourage my friends, colleagues and any single person reading this to look within and prepare for what God has in store for them and before jumping into a relationship, ask themselves the question… “Am I ready for love?”

Ryan was offered an Internship with the Saltmine Trust, a Christian creative arts charity. Ryan toured the UK with their Theatre Company as a Sound and Light Engineer and continued to develop his music. Ryan now serves as the Worship Pastor at Revival Fires, where he has led worship alongside Brian Johnson, Kim Walker-Smith, Kevin Prosch, Michael Larson, Chris Quilala and Anthony Skinner among others. He spent most of

2008 leading worship in a move known as the ‘Dudley Outpouring,’ which drew people night after night, from around the world, hungry to see God’s power. Eager to challenge his own sonic boundaries, Ryan worked with producer Julian Kindred on his debut solo release, entitled ‘The Deepest Part’. Recorded and produced by Julian at his Non Such Park Studios in Surrey, England, the project features musicians Joe Clegg, Dan Wheeler, James Gregory and Micah Wilshire. The 10 songs penned by Ryan carry a spirit of passion and a heart for worship, while not being limited to the musical scope of a live performance.

Ryan’s lyrics deliver messages of truth and freedom, drawing on his experience of liberation through Christ, the injustice he witnessed growing up, and hope for his generation to respond to God with a whole heart and to serve His purposes in this day. Ryan’s characteristic sound is one of passion, fusing together driving acoustic melodies and rich, expressive vocals. His music ranges from intimate love songs to lively pop to passionate, rousing anthems.

LIFE

TEXT ED BIRD PHOTO GETTY

You are most alive when you live with abandonment.

GET Y

ou’re most alive

when you’re out of your comfort zone or pushing yourself to excel.

Our lives can become very repetitive, we eat the same food, meet with the same people, listen to the same type of music and watch the same old TV shows, day in – day out. Our journey with God can fall into the same pattern very easily... church on Sunday, maybe one or two weekly pick-me-ups... But when life’s too comfortable you run the risk of not really living at all. So what’s the fix? We’re called to live with total abandonment for God, taking risks and living wholeheartedly. In 1 Corinthians 15:58, Paul says “Therefore my brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labour is not in vain.”

Risk can come in many forms. Bear Grylls takes physical risks every day for his job – pushing his survival and endurance levels to the limit. He has a ‘quiet faith’ that he describes as the backbone of everything he does; it gives him strength. His risk-taking out in the wild also fuels his faith; as he puts it: “You don’t meet many atheists in the death zone at the top of Everest.” Pushing ourselves physically can be part of our worship and celebration of the life God’s given us, whether that’s running races for charity, surfing at sunset, or dancing with friends. It can also help to counter the root of some of the more negative Christian stereotypes of boring, fear-ridden, legalistic killjoys. There are obviously certain risks that we do try to avoid as Christians, only because they bring harm to ourselves or others. What

Have you ever jumped off a cliff into some water? Or signed up to a challenge that is way beyond anything you’ve done before?. better way to counter the stereotype than to go out and embrace all the good things we HAVE been given, rather than retreating into a fearful holy huddle? Christians can be the most creative, wild, imaginative people on the planet, when we start realising how creative, wild and

imaginative our God is.

“For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper and not to harm.” We can also take risks in our faith, emotionally and spiritually, pursuing God and the call he has for us with wholehearted passion. Take Nick Vujicic, an Australian preacher and motivational speaker, who was born with no legs and no arms. After struggling with depression and bullying throughout his childhood, he eventually

came to terms with his disability and realised that his life could inspire others. Instead of hiding away and living a safe life, he started to take risks, and has now spoken to over three million people in over 24 countries on five continents, and has his own non-profit organisation called ‘Life Without Limbs’. He speaks about life with a disability, hope, and finding meaning in life. He also speaks about his belief that God can use any willing heart to do His work and that God is big enough to overcome any and all disabilities. Nick knew what it was to take a risk when he learnt to swim with no arms and legs! As a band we’re constantly trying to push ourselves and pursue our calling, it means taking risks, saying no to other commitments, sacrificing our time and our energy. What risks can you start to take in your life – today, this week, this month?

God’s up for it – are you?

hile serving at their father’s church in rural Ontario, the guys scrapbooked a host of modern congregational and devotional offerings and the rest (as they say) is history. They have since released an EP and more recently an album and have toured with Hillsong UNITED and Phil Wickham. The Royal Royal have been on a journey of faith and worship since their early years and so we spoke to them in a quest to find about more about their journey and what they have learned and encountered along the way.

“We grew up in a musical family and my parents have always been musical and have encouraged us to be musical. My father is a Pastor of a church, and we have always been involved in the music of our church. The way we started in pursuing ‘Royal’ was just playing music as a necessity. We needed to write music as a necessity for our youth. We wanted to start writing songs that would be birthed out of the expression of or local church, and out of that need we started writing and meeting that need. Then my brother had a studio that he was working at for different projects and we both decided that we wanted to do a worship record together. So we said, ‘you know what? We should just use the songs we’ve been writing for our youth and put them on that record’ and really kind of bring more exposure to that music. I think we also felt God, obviously called us to do that. It wasn’t so much a deliberate decision as it was something that we both felt spiritually that God was leading and guiding us in that direction.

One way or another P.K’s (Pastor’s Kids) often end up leading worship and seem to have an anointing to do so. It’s a very natural, organic process where you just naturally find yourself meeting a need,” Gabe explains. Gabe and Nate are passionate about worship and impacting the local church, not just wanting to be another band who happen to be Christians but a band that serve and also minister. “The thing for us was that we didn’t want to just be a Christian band, we wanted to be a worship band. In that sense we wanted to reach the local church. We have a heart for that because that’s where we come from, where we minister from and that’s where we ultimately believe that people’s lives are ultimately believe that people’s lives are going to be touched and changed; in the context of a local family, a local church.” As I spoke with Gabe I could hear the purpose and intent in

his voice. The Royal Royal make purposeful music to impact, empower and encourage. Hearing The Royal Royal perform so much acoustic material, we wanted know if this was the stripped down version of what happens in worship or just their style. “That’s more of a production issue. In all of our songs it’s a combination of production and song writing because when we write our songs we believe that if our song isn’t good enough on its own as a stripped down naked thing, then it’s not going to be good when it’s dressed up. When you dress it up through production you’re really only putting clothes on something.” This subject is one Gabe is passionate about which could be heard in his tone as he went on… “Production should act as an enhancement and not as the things that is the substance of what you’re enhancing. With us it’s always finding that tension with writing a good song that can be played on an acoustic guitar out in the middle of a cornfield and sound ok than a song that needs a lot of makeup to make it look good.” Being British, whenever the word ”Royal” pops up, it’s easy to think of the Queen and all things majestic. So after watching The Royal Royal ‘Praise Him’ acoustic video located in a barn it was easy to tell that the royalty that their name depicts is not Buckingham Palace royal. “Interestingly enough, there’s a little bit of a story behind the evolution of that name. We started out with the idea of ‘Royal’, the singular idea of ‘Royal’ and then it evolved into something that became ‘The Royal Royal’. Our first inclination was to think of that word ‘Royal’ and then as we started the process of forming our band, and also kind of forming not only our band but our brand we thought that if we want to be distinctive we should probably go with ‘The Royal Royal’. It’s one of those things that it’s long enough to grab your attention. It’s not one of those small names that if you blink you miss it. It’s ‘The Royal Royal,’ but we abbreviate it when we talk about it, calling it ‘Royal’ or ‘The Royal’.” “In terms of what you picked up on how we are dressed down and scaled back; that more Indie flare that’s also where we are starting. For us it’s a great starting point,

72

the story of The Prince and the Pauper- the pauper could be a prince. Ultimately our idea of ‘Royal’ is that God is the Royalty, and as a worship band we are worshipping THE Majestic one. He is the King of Kings and all royalty comes from Him. That is our purpose, to exalt the King of Kings.” When reading their biography, Gabe and Nate’s experience of growing up in the church was very positive. When I talk to a lot of Pastors kids, and even artists and musicians in general their experience of church at a young age aren’t always as positive. “I do agree with you that there can be a lot of negative experiences as a Pastor’s kid. You do feel that you live in a glass house and there’s a massive crowd of spectators that’s just watching what’s going on inside of that big building. I think the key to living in the glass house is to live the same way that you live inside that you live outside. The key for us growing up as Pastors kids was that we saw the integrity of our father and mother and they provided a real, genuine witness to Christ for us. That is the key that I’m getting to… That consistency. My father was the same man in the house as he was in the pulpit. I didn’t see a dualism in the way that he lived his life. That was a massive influence on me and I grew up under that. My parents were witnesses to me of Christ, when I came of age to decide it was an easy decision. It was easy for me to follow in their footsteps, because they had laid that groundwork for me to do so. People have a free will and they can choose. You can do everything right for your children and then they make a decision on their own and I totally understand that. But for us that wasn’t the case, my parents really did follow the scripture ‘Raise up a child in the way that he should go and when he is older he will not depart from it.’ My parents did an amazing job raising us properly, I would attribute the strong majority of the reason why I’m a Christian, faithful and serving the Lord as well as my brother and sister because of my parents witness.” Another thing I noticed is that Gabe and Nate went to Bible school. While Pastor’s and Ministers have been doing this for years, going to Bible school has now also become very popular amongst worship leaders, which can only be a good thing. The more a person gets to know the Word of God, the more they know God and as a worship

leader this can only lead to more theologically sound songs and songs birthed out of a deep love for God and not just for the sake of it. However with that said, recently there has been many questions posed about “generic worship songs” and “formulaic song-writing” and how lots of songs follow the same pattern and don’t seem to be inspired or come from a true place of worship as much as they come from having to meet a deadline for the next album. “There’s a lot of times that there is expectation put upon your anointing that would be considered out of season. There’s a guy named Ken Penree who was one of my main influences growing up, he’s an

MEXMAG

incredible worship leader and one of the first few guys that explored open worship/congregational worship. He said, “I don’t worship because I’m a worship leader! I worship because I love Jesus!” It’s

that simple but it’s that profound. Worship leaders, if you really love Jesus and your relationship with Him is authentic and overflowing with a surplus of affection and love and it’s just a natural relationship

that is constantly emanating love. I really think that as an artist, worshipper and/or Christian who maintains their well properly, when you put that bucket down at any time of the day you’re going to draw water. I think we should be pushing ourselves to be more theological, deep and have meanings in our songs. But I don’t think that we should have to do that at the expense of leaving everybody behind us.” After such a profound statement I was interested to find out which one of Gabe’s songs that he has written in his favourite and represents him as a person. “So basically you’re asking me to choose which one of my children are my favourites? (laughs). That’s kind of an unfair question! But, if I had to choose one child to save, I would say…” Gabe struggled to pin point one song that he loves and represents him but after much

deliberation I got it out of him… “It’s really difficult; there are three songs that I really absolutely love. One is called ‘Life In Your Hand,’ which is featured on our album ‘The Royalty’. Then there’s another song called ‘Mighty Hand’ and that song is a really intimate song but it’s one of those songs that has a lot of grit to it and I really love it. Then there’s ‘My Salvation’. These are three songs that I think stand out on ‘The Royalty’.” “We believe as a band that as artists we want to create the best art for God but not just that. We want to glorify God through our art and we believe and agree that worship is the ultimate expression of art towards God. One of our favourite authors, (G.K Chesterton) said in an essay

‘The best thing that man can do is to praise God because it is the only thing that he can properly do towards God’. We want to enter into that place of the ultimate thing that we can do for God to glorify His name. In Revelation, John walks into the Holy of Holies and all he sees in the Holy of Holies before the throne are the 24 elders of his land that are

lifting their crowns and they’re worshipping and they are simply saying to God ‘Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord’. For us that’s the highest thing we can do as artists. We are artists; we’re not simply church musicians or guys that if we weren’t doing Royal wouldn’t be doing anything. We actually have other bands that we are a part of, so we have

other expressions that we have that are not for worship. But we do feel that worship is the highest expression that we can do for God. When we come to God with what we have, we want to give Him something that costs us something- David said. So we’re going to give Him our most costly art, and that is our worship. We do it all with the desire to glorify God, make His name great, lift the name of Jesus high but also to equip the church to do the same thing. For Royal we’re a conduit of all that and all we want to do is connect. We’re a connector, we want to connect the church with God in a process of worship and let it fly.” Being passionate about worship is one thing but knowing that you’re called to lead people into worship is another thing. The passage of scripture “Many are called but few are chosen” gets repeated a lot by Christians but what was it that really let Gabe and Nate know that they were made to do this (chosen)…. “We really felt God leading,

guiding and directing our steps. I was actually pursuing something completely different than going into music full time and a band. I was actually pursuing a different avenue of church ministry and that window fell through and I think God opened up this door for Royal and it’s one of those things that we walked through. I find that there are times in life that God will open up a window in order to discover if we have enough character to wait until he opens up a door. I think that God wants us to walk through doors in our lives. Personally, in my life every decision that I’ve made to do something that has been fruitful and when I look back on it and I’m like yeah that was definitely the hand of God moving-that was a door that I simply walked through, it was a door that God had opened. I really believe that God opens these doors for people and that’s what he did for us. We felt led by Him to do that. The Bible says, “a righteousness man’s steps are ordered by the Lord.” That means, in each step God is revealing to you, He’s pulling a drape out from that step and you’re seeing the next step in front of you. You may not see ten steps in front but you’ll at least see one, and you’ll know that it’s God. We really felt that Royal was a step from God that we were supposed to pursue at this point in our lives..” Nathan and Gabriel have captured a sound, developed a heart of worship and have a solid foundation on which their ministry stands… It’s something special, something pure and something unique. Listening to their music is like a breath of fresh air and after learning more about them it’s clear to see that Gabe and Nate are just 2 men who are in awe of a ‘Royal’ God.

The Royal Royal released their debut album ‘The Royal’ on 16th October 2012 and is available on iTunes and Amazing and other major retailers.

Moriah Peters is a 19 year old worship leader, University student and devout Christian. Describing herself as a “19-year-old girl sharing the beautiful lessons that I am learning as a daughter of God.”

A

s someone who is so young, dedicated to her faith, committed to her education and has overcome challenges that many of us have faced we wanted to get to know the ‘I Choose Jesus’ singer and how she manages it all. Moriah attributes her introduction to music to her dad (a bass player) and from Jazz and Funk musical styles listening to artists such as Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire and Sade.

“My first experiences with singing were not so sweet. As a child, I was insecure

of what culture, media or friends create.”

We first came to know of Moriah through her song ‘I Choose Jesus’ (which later went on to also being the title for the album). In a time when young people are abandoning morals and Godly principles and where young Christians go away to University and return as agnostic we wanted to know what caused Moriah to make the stand and choose Jesus over everything.

There’s many people who will have experienced the same loss of faith but everyone will have their own defining moment where they ultimately make that all important decision to choose Jesus… or not.

“I chose Jesus because His life and love are real and true. I got so caught up and confused in the world’s definition of freedom, ‘doing whatever makes you happy,’ that I began to doubt the existence of God in my life. But I realized that ultimate freedom is found in living by God’s word and for His glory, free from the pressures and standards

“I understand that choosing Jesus over everything else that the world is offering can be difficult, because everything else that is pulling for our attention looks so fulfilling, like social media fame, thousands of “friends,” money, boyfriends and girlfriends, etc. but the hole in our heart is shaped like Jesus. He’s the only one who can fill it and everything else will do nothing but leave us empty.” “When we choose Jesus we get so much in return: love, forgiveness,

peace, comfort...nothing in this world offers that freely and forever.” Recording ‘I Choose Jesus’ was also an experience for Moriah, recording the songs that had been birthed out of personal experiences and also encounters with God. Getting the opportunity to work with Ed Cash (Chris Tomlin, Steven Curtis Chapman, Dave Barnes, Kari Jobe) would also be when Moriah’s songs really came to life. “Imagine walking into a room filled with creative genius; musicians who can play anything you ask and more, a producer who has a Pastor’s heart and a desire to serve in making your songs the best they can possibly be.” “Those were the kind of people I got to work with! On one of the 20 days in the studio, I walked out onto the backyard porch where deer and fawn were running through the thick forrest and as I swung on the 50-foot tall tire swing after finishing a track, I thought to myself, ‘God, how is this even happening? Thank you!’” Getting songs that come in moments of inspiration and devotion to transition from personal expressions to full songs to share with the world is always a difficult task and sometimes the original emotion and feeling of the song get’s lost. “If I sing with the conviction and passion that I had when I first wrote a song, I think that translates to the listener,” says Moriah. “Every song on the record is based off of a personal experience, so each time I sing a song, I’m reliving that time in my life. For example, I wrote ‘Bloom’ when I felt depressed and alone during my earlier teens and every time I sing that song on stage, I feel a rush of those same emotions, only now, I can look back at that time and share a message of God’s faithfulness with an audience.” Moriah is passionate about people who listen to ‘I Choose Jesus’ taking home a message. Not just good music or nice sounding lyrics but a message that will impact lives.

80

“Be bold. Stand strong. Choose who you will live for today,” says Moriah. “Seek a reason for what you believe so that you can defend your faith when someone asks you about it. Our generation is looking for someone to live for; let your life point them to the fulfilling love of Jesus.” Hearing Moriah’s thoughts and experiences could cause anyone to believe that she has it all together and is the perfect young Christian with everything from her relationship with God, to her University studies and worship ministry balanced or in ‘perfect harmony’. “That is my biggest challenge right now!” Moriah expressed while going on to say, “But I am learning that if I am not seeking God first, I become overwhelmed. God has been teaching me to “humble [myself] before Him... and to cast all [my] anxieties on Him” (ESV, 1Pet. 5:6). When my spiritual life is healthy, then everything else sort of has a way of falling into place.” Growing up Moriah was that girl who was (in the words of Fred Hammond) “picked on,” “talked about” and “mistreated”. Describing herself as “tall” and “lanky” and not the most cool or popular girl in School; Moriah never really found her place and often felt like the odd one out or the one that didn’t fit in which took its toll on her. “Looking back, I giggle at those awkward times. I was thrown into trashcans and had trash thrown into my hair! In those moments, I was filled with so much hurt and anger towards those who bullied me, but I learned to love them even if I didn’t like them... That wasn’t easy but it’s what Christ asks us to do.” At some stage in life most of us will have been made to feel like social outcasts, whether that be in School or even in the work place for varying reasons, from high levels of academic achievement to political standpoints or even our own views of ourselves. “I was one of them,” says Moriah.

MEXMAG

“I know what it feels like to be alone and to not like what you see in the mirror. Those can be dark and difficult times, but don’t just go through it, grow through it! Let God be your strength when you feel weak and receive His love and security when you feel insecure.” “He doesn’t ever run out of that stuff! Memorize his promises, like 1 Peter 5:6 and Deut. 31:6 and say them out loud whenever you feel afraid or impatient. This is just a season.” Moriah is a testimony to the fact that we find our identity

in God and although we often have our own views and perceptions of ourselves, seeing things from God’s perspective really does make all the difference. Making the choice to choose Jesus is rarely an easy thing to do but as Moriah says, we all have a ‘Jesus’ shaped hole in our heart. Many try to fill the void with drugs, alcohol, sex and more trying to leave the troubles of this world behind and experience freedom but the freedom they desire can only be found in Jesus. Today can be the day that you choose Jesus over sin, lack of self-esteem, pain, selfishness and pride…

v4 The Other Side

UNCREATED ONE ‘Uncreated One’ has many songs that will

find themselves at home in churches who favour the Rock/Pop influenced worship sound. However I found it hard to get into the album… It doesn’t seem to push any boundaries and sounds really clean and polished. It was easy for the whole album to pass me by without it grabbing me or pulling me in. For me it felt very safe and middle of the road and while I enjoyed many of the songs I heard I don’t think ‘Uncreated One’ is a strong as a lot of other releases that have come out and have brought me some of my new favourite songs.

I found ‘V4… The Other Side’ really hard to review for a number of reasons. J. Moss is a legendary singer, songwriter and producer but after listening to the album many times I still found myself unable to pick a stand-out song. Really hoping that I had “missed it” and the album just needed to grow on me, I listened to it non-stop for nearly 2 weeks in the hope that I would catch what I was “missing.” If you’re a die hard J. Moss fan then there’s lots you’ll like about ‘V4… The Other Side’… J. Moss’s signature vocals, music that you can reflect on while listening to and music that you can get your dance on to and everything in between. However if you’re not, this could just be an album of nice sounding music that gets listened to from time-to-time.

I Believe ‘Still Believe’ is a powerful album. It’s only 9 songs long but it doesn’t feel like it. The album has a flow that is conducive to worship and the building up of faith to receive miracles.

Kim Walker-Smith is a powerful woman… It may just be me but every time I hear her voice it perforates my soul and stirs something within me and as she sings she pierces the darkness and ushers in the presence of God. If you’re looking for passionate Praise & Worship based on the truth of God’s word that can raise your faith, look no further… After listening to this album I stopped saying “I think” and “maybe” and started saying “I BELIEVE!”

The Jesus Record ‘The Jesus Record’ is one of the best albums I’ve heard in a while. From a writing and production point of view I can’t fault it. The way Freddy Washington Jnr has fused styles and written songs in totally different styles but still makes the album sound like a fluent, coherent project shows his skill as a producer. From fans of old school Gospel to Contemporary Gospel to Pop/Rock and CCM, there’s something

’The Jesus Record’

here for everyone to enjoy but most of all, there is a delightful vibrancy and feel good factor like the first day of a much-needed holiday/vacation. I don’t think I’ll hear a better independent project this for a long time. However with that said ‘The Jesus Record’ can stand up next to the best of them… It’s original, it’s fun, it encourages, and it can lead you into times of worship but most of all… Its focus is Jesus!

incredible album for many reasons. To listen to this album is to go on a journey of worship and recognition of the awesomeness of God. This album feels like a worship service, not a live recording for an album… Rather it feels like I’ve been let into a powerful worship experience that Jesus Culture and Martin Smith and the thousands of people in attendance have been kind enough to share with us. If worshipping God is your thing, you’ll find it very hard

to not engage with this album and find yourself in the flow of worship. The instrumentation is so simple, yet effective in creating atmospheres of worship and supporting the songs and the lyrics, which are really something special. These songs sound like songs that have come out of worship and genuine pursuit of God and that comes through in the music and engaged me and connected with the heart of worship behind the songs.
